Groovin'

I'm not sure that the entire album merits being on this list, but there were defintely some enjoyable tracks. Groovin' was certainly the star of the album for a reason, but what stuck with me the most was the diversity of sounds and styles on the album overall. If I were to listen to tracks like "A Girl Like You" and "I Don't Love You Anymore" alongside "You Better Run" or "A Place in the Sun", I'd have sworn they were entirely different bands. In the end, I'm glad to be introduced to the album.

Enjoyed this, not heard of them before but like a boy band version of Dusty Springfield

Not was what I was expecting from the name/cover. Bit of a mixed bag of all kinds of genres. Who is this band and what was their influence?? Opening song sounded a little like Motown. Pop/Soul. Second song was more what I was expecting - vaguely psychedelic influenced 60s rambling pop/rock with too much tambourine/shaker. Next song is like a sweet beatles/monkees pop song. Anyway it continued with a roulette-like random sprinkling of genres and influences, and I didn't even know their "hit"

Eh, unremarkable.

Not super my thing. I actually sounded pretty good, but It sounded really old. I Don't think I could ever really picture myself listening to something with that sound in my spare time. It's not bad, it's not good. It just is.

Bit of fun!

I really liked the first side of the album. It was really different from what I expected out of a 60's album, and it pulled "psychedelic" well in my opinion. The second side was way worse as it follows a weird narrative and I don't like spoken word in music. Favorite track: Groovin'

It's a pretty decent 60's psychedelic-ish album. That being said, that is my jam so I will rate it a 4. If you like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, 13th Floor Elevators, Forever Changes, you should go ahead and give this one a try too. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, and 6.

A cool little blue eyed soul album, more entertaining than the copious amounts of psychedelic music from its era. A girl like you, I’m so happy now, Groovin, How can I be sure and it’s love are all standouts among this album that provides an excellent mood for that Friday afternoon feeling when you just clock off work

You better run is a banger.

Objectively not bad, but does not move me emotionally much. Quite relaxing and smooth.

You can't expect pitch perfect production from a record that is almost 50 years old, but what I did expect still somewhat dissapointed me. The vibes are friendly and the melodies are harmonious, though besides Groovin' there is not a lot of memorable material on here. 2/5.

Most of this just kinda passed me by, the final track "It's Love" is AMAZING though

This to me is like a perfect slice of stereotypical easy-to-listen-to late 60s vocal pop/rock music. It's never going to end up as a personal favourite ... it's not mysterious nor edgy nor aggressive nor moody - rather "just" a collection of quite short and easily-accessible pop tunes. Yet by the same token there's literally nothing to *not* like, either. Lovely melodies and a all-time classic single "Groovin'" make this a worthy choice. Also I never had any idea that "You Better Run" was not a Pat Benatar original!? Can't ever go wrong putting this on for a spin on a Sunday afternoon. 7/10 3 stars

Ce n'est pas moi qui vais rédiger la critique du jour, mais bien mon grand-père avec qui j'ai partagé l'écoute de cet album. À toi Papy : "J'ai beaucoup aimé entendre cette musique rock dont le rythme me rappelle ce que j'écoutais dans ma jeunesse. De belles voix avec des rythmes très dansants. Un moment rare que j'aimerais renouveler." Vous l'avez probablement remarqué, mon grand-père n'a aucun savoir-faire en terme de critiques musicales. Je me vois obligé de reprendre la main. L'album est nul. Les Rascals sont des merdes. Le leader du groupe, l'ignoble Dizzee Rascal nous offre une performance en dessous de tout. D'abord sur le titre Dizzee Rascal Type Beat, puis sur la chanson Zone dans laquelle il répète inlassablement "Laissez-moi chuis dans ma zone, Neksan Orelfeu, Orelzi, Dizfeu, Nekzi, Dizsan, I don't speak but french but Nekfeu, Orelsan, Dizzee, Neksan, Orelfeu...". À oublier.

Malgré une pochette mettant en scène une bande de profonds débiles (une allégorie de l'audimat du générateur, portant sur ses épaules John Lennon?), il est vrai que cet album était de très bonne qualité. Merci à Robert de m'avoir rendu l'album disponible sur mon Spotify, j'ai apprécié la pensée.

July 14, 2021 Today is pretty much the same as yesterday and I am creeped out by this album cover. There is smoke from all the fires and outside is vaguely brown. I liked some of these songs but really disliked others. (Track 5 - sounds greasy???) A little too R&B for me, maybe.

Obviously groovin is a classic and it kicks off with a great intro in a girl like you. Interesting concept with you better run… it has this blues type of feel, they pulled it off really good. "Groovin" is a perfect, timeless song so this album has that already going for it (Groovin is a 5). "How Can I Be Sure" is another classic. And there's a song I only knew as a Pat Benetar song ("You Better Run"). The other songs don't really compare to those gems, but it's still a great listen overall.

Pretty groovy I guess

nice soul/blues vibe from the start of the record. I really like the instrumentals on the first song. The mixing on the second song seems off. As the record progresses, it gets less interesting, and the vocals don't seem matched for the instrumentals.

Album is all over the place. I'm hearing (Revolver) Beatles, Monkeys, Chicago, Jeff Airplane, even Burt Bacharach. Best song definitely "You Better Run" though Pat Benetar does it better.

Nice oldies tracks. "Groovin'" is great. "How Can I be Sure" is also killer.

Great album. It's another one of those where I already knew half of the songs, but hadn't quite figured out who the artist was.

Meh. Sounds like a typical 60s Beatles ripoff. The title track was good and that's about it.

Not feeling this. It’s fine. Just not really into love songs or songs about relationships. It’s just played and goddamn there are sooo many songs about the subject. There are some cool production moments on this thing for the time that were rad. And I appreciate how they pull influences from psych rock and blues but overall it’s just not for me.

Has a fantastic opener and an overall great feel. There’s definitely a lull in the middle of the album with “Groovin’,” holding it together, but it finishes strong and doesn’t shy away from experimentation I.e “You Better Run.” I’d give this 3.75/5 if that was an option here.

Never heard of them but I rather liked this. Lots of influences - psychedelic, 60s soul, even a song that took David Cassidy to number 1.

Mostly innoffensive stuff. Occasionally some jarring, incongruous guitar arrangements, as might be expected from a rock band doing soul, but on the whole they are probably the blackest sounding white men I've heard. David Cassidy was obviously a fan, he covered 2 of their songs. An interesting historical footnote, but not sure why it would be on any list of essential albums.

This album certainly sounds of its time, but that is groovy, as the name suggests. Two stand out tracks are the title track, which is head and shoulders above the rest. However, You Better Run is a great rocking track and the vocals are super cool. The first half of the album is full of a lot of naieve rhymes that are really of the time eg. Wife, life, if you knew, my love it true etc... However, the second half is much more grown up with some fab songs like A Place in the Sun.

Weird old band - They are a product of their time for sure. I hear some beatles influence in tracks like find somebody, and certainly stones influence as well. They also played with the stereo sound on that song too, but it comes across as annoying. That was a super common thing to do for the time. Groovin' is an okay "Sunday" song. A place in the sun is the most emotional and interesting song of the bunch. "You better run" aged like milk though - violent lyrics toward a romantic partner? Wasn't expecting that. Guess they had a little too much stones influence!

Perfectly fine I guess, but nothing here differentiates them from the other 10000 bands chasing the Beatle's coattails in the late 60's

There was a time in my life I'd have been all over this. That time is not now. I'm well down with the badly drawn album cover though. Some crazy arse action going on there. Makes me think of Vic and Bob.

A lot better than I thought it would be, dropped a 2 in the middle as it got a bit wishy washy but a solid 3 ending tracks pulled it back up again

I really liked this album. Feared it would be 60's dreamy nonsense but it is really good. Spans a few genres.

It had several songs which were unavailable to play in my country. It wasn't a great shame. It was alright. Standard 60s shiz. Like SHACK shagging the chippy tranny.

Left me a bit cold this. One Motown song, one Blues song, one song that's a bit Beatles, one song that's a bit Beach Boys, one song that's a bit Love, one song that's a bit Serge Gainsbourg. None of them as good as the originals. Seems like they couldn't decide whose coattails they wanted to ride to the topper most of the popper most, so they grabbed a big handful of all the coattails.

Really enjoyed that, particularly How Can I Be Sure. Better than the David Cassidy version. Also Groovin. Will definitely listen again. ****

Nice Sunday vibes with some cool tunes one there. A bit Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons-esque. Not sure I’d rush back to listen to the whole album again but enjoyed it.

It’s hard to take this music seriously. It’s charming, trippy, and makes me want to try hallucinogenics and give it another try.

Really liked this album. Fresh look at the 60-70’s and just laying around and listening to the past .It was really Groovin😊. Surprised how many of these songs I’d heard before but not knowing it was the Rascals. Great harmony and lyrics. This was a surprise

I enjoyed this album much more than I anticipated. It may have been because I watched Once Upon a Time In Hollywood recently and this felt like it was ripped right from the soundtrack. Just a sort of folksy rock group trying to grove and have fun. What else would you expect from some young rascals in the late 60's. Album cover is very strange but it was probably a strange time.

Great album, plenty of soul. I was expecting something more psychedelic based on the cover but this was really enjoyable. I once had an empty LP sleeve of this album that I repurposed to house a loose J Dilla vinyl, and I’m thrilled to actually hear what it was I didn’t have. Favorite tracks: A Girl Like You, Sueno, Groovin’, Find Somebody. Album art: Love this one, very fun. Bizarre caricatures, but the colors and the vibe are undeniable. 4/5

Really dig it. Not a great album top to bottom but you can't go wrong with some solid Soul. "Groovin" is one of the all time great songs.

I thought this was a fun listen - has some of that doe eyed earnestness of some of the music of 60's. Dipping their toes into phychadelic rock, which I could have used more of.

A decent outing. Very much 60's pop music. Is a very pleasant album to listen to, music and most of the lyrics, maintains its upbeat personality. Songs like "you better run" explore a more psychedelic sound but still fit well with the album. Also contains their 'biggest' hit "groovin'" which is a great song and is real groovy song.

Today I'm listening to Groovin' by the Young Rascals. It's all very familiar, and I'm enjoying the music and like I've said many times before - context is nice. Of course I've heard 'Groovin' and "How can you be sure" many times on the radio and in popular culture. These songs aren't created in a vacuum, so it's interesting to see how a song fits in within the context of a large number of songs. I've always been more interested in the full album as a way to understand an artist. Singles are lovely and all, but I would like to know where they originally came from. I'm currently listening to 'A Place in the Sun' and I definitely prefer the original - but they bring some soul to it and do a decent cover. It makes me want to immediately find the Stevie song and give it a listen again. Listening to these albums is great because of the roads and rabbit holes it sends me down trying to figure out how popular music came to be. Oh Stevie Wonder you have made my morning better. And I can now imagine a place in the sun, and there is hope for everyone.

I generally like this kind of 60s pop but as the album went on it wore thin with me, particularly when they got to "a place in the sun" which I thought was overdone.

Another style of music I just don't care for. It's not bad, but not for me. Does nothing.

Felt like it was trying to be The Beatles for a few of the songs, didn't have much feeling in them.

Still feel that except for the great Groovin (life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly groovin'....superb lyric) and How Can I Be Sure and You Better Run. My favorite is missing: I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore. Felix P great singer just needs better back up and more better songs

It's a straightforward (meant literally) collection of mostly-happy tunes. Feels like a collection of singles, front-loaded at that.
