People keep on learnin'

Pure genius.

Were you to distil my musical dna into 50 albums, this would be one of them. I prefer this album to songs in the key of life. Livin for the city is an astounding song with incredible production. From the hard funk of Higher ground to the pop sensibility of golden lady. The hard brutal politics of mistra know it all. For me the standout is Jesus children of America. The response and call in it is so so cool. It’s really the state of black music, 1973-1983. It’s all killer, no filler. 10 stars.

His 16th album. I had no idea he was so prolific, or had a record deal at age 12, and they say here is was at the height of his powers - from his “classical period” this is one of his best, most perfect works (3 consecutive Grammy best album awards in the 70’s - and he not only defined the sound of the 70s, he is a joyful voice for so many feelings, moments and places - thats a legacy and influence). Thai album, I learned, is considered “his the most consistent, most coherent and most perfect of all Stevie Wonder albums“ . And yes, I found it spectacular for so many reasons. His beautiful warm and delicate voice. Motown is so soulful enjoyable happy and upbeat. And then the emotion evoked, when understanding it an important political / social document on post 60’s disappointment - the promise that didn't materialise. Succinctly summarised here ( I am neither expert nor succinct enough to do better): https://somethingelsereviews.com/2015/08/06/stevie-wonder-innervisions/ So onwards... MY IMPRESSIONS Simply put its a beautiful album. Very cohesive in sound. Agreed. Fascinating wonderfully and elevating . He does tender, beautiful, intelligent and strong simultaneously. Moving if you actually sit , pause, and listen to understand what he is singing about. Standout tracks for me?(so hard to choose) Higher Ground. Summary Does it belong on a 1001 list? (1-5) 5 yes. Personal Enjoyment (1-5) 5 Will I listen again? Yes Final score. On easy 5. What a standout talent and impact for all of us... not to mention so many other albums spanning decades, the “other” version of Happy Birthday and its significance to many Americans. Entertainer, and true leader and culture shaper.

Stevie and the Fender Rhodes, what a sound. Like George's slide guitar work, it is unique, as soon as you hear it you know it's Stevie. Too High is a very mid seventies Stevie sound, delightful. As is Visions, a beautiful lyric and the tune the very definition of nostalgia, the ache in the theme and the music. Then he brings all that together in Living for the City, a low key undercurrent sustained by a straining vocal line, you can feel the power and the anger of the man. Three tracks in and I'm blown away Dimery death freaks. The refrain, as he la de das his way into the next chapter, sure enough. Fuck me no one writes like this anymore, no one. And Kanye is a genius apparently, not a whole lot of sampling to create the vibe going on here, just brilliant song writing and musicianship. The slow build to Golden Lady points to another direction, how many paths can this guy go down in one album? And that gorgeous tune slides into Higher Ground, say what? Ok that's enough, you get the mortician's drift, as the formaldehyde is arraigned before your soon to be corpse, ask them to keep you compos mentis long enough to hear this astonishing record before they turn you add you into Lenin's Tomb..

The first I heard of Little Stevie Wonder was Hey Harmonica Man in 1964. But it was the funky Uptight (1965) & the glorious I Was Made To Love Her (1967) that made me a big fan. His version of Blowin’ In The Wind (1966)was Bob with a beat, & his cover of The Beatles’ We Can Work It Out (1970)is to this day one of the great cover versions. At the same time, in the late 60’s, he had dropped the “Little” & had a string of hit singles that started with For Once In My life (1968), which he had not written & had already been recorded by Tony Bennett & would soon be covered by Sinatra. My Cherie Amour(1969) followed, then another non-original, Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday (1969). These were all big hits, but were the kinds of songs that were soon being performed in RSL clubs by passing tenors. I should know, I worked in an RSL Club every weekend from mid-1973 till the end of 1975. These tunes were butchered regularly. So by the 70’s, Stevie had mastered a lot of styles. And this was nowhere more obvious than on his 1972 l.p., Talking Book. It contained the biggest RSL club crossover of the 70’s - the self-penned You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. I heard that song performed so many times. Yet for the same album he writes & performs one of the landmark funk tracks of the 70’s - Superstition. And, as usual, plays most of the instruments himself. He was at the top of his game when he recorded the tracks for Innervisions. I ate the album up when it was released. He wrote, arranged & produced all 9 songs, played all the instruments on 3 of them, & most of the instruments on the others. And his songwriting goes to another level. He Deals with drug abuse in the funky opening track Too High. He had embraced synthesisers and you get them from the opening verse. The final track, He’s Misstra Know-It All is a blistering attack on Richard Nixon. And, in between, you get 2 of his greatest songs : Side 1 Track 3 - Living For The City - it was one of the first songs to deal with systemic racism & also to use street sounds, sirens & spoken dialogue. He played all the instruments and it is 7&1/2 minutes of blues/soul greatness. Which was covered soon after by both Ray Charles & Ike & Tina Turner. And the opening track on Side 2 & one of the finalists in the Funkiest-Song-Of-All-Time Competition : Higher Ground. Unbelievably funky. Funky white Boys Red Hot Chili Peppers were right into it. Still the most successful cover they ever recorded (1989). So around the time I bought the album, I was getting drunk one night with my cousin Michael, We ended up back at his house in Guilford. It was a late night and I remember him going on & on about how great Stevie Wonder’s version of You Are The Sunshine Of My life was & playing it over & over. He was a fan of the club-style Stevie song. He wasn’t interested in the funky Stevie. And that was okay. I don’t have many cousins. So I’ve always enjoyed any quality time I’ve had with Michael. It was all good. I told him there was a song he’d like on the new album - All In Love is Fair was the lush ballad that would make it to the clubs. Pretty sure I heard it from the stage of Chester Hill RSL before I finished my stint there. And it had Bab’s imprimatur - Streisand released it as a single in 1974. And 30 years later I saw a performance of it one night in a talent show at Newtown High School of Performing Arts. Heartwarming to see another generation embrace Wonder’s talent. Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest - without a doubt. And the genius of these compositions is there for all to see.

Stevie Wonder is one of the all time great singer/songwriter/musicians/producers/harmonica players, and this is one of his great albums from the height (and midpoint) of his imperial phase, which Slate described as "the Greatest Creative Run in the History of Popular Music". The songwriting, singing, playing and production are all of the highest quality, resulting in a warm, inviting, complex, funky, and above all, deeply human record. This album contains a lot of examples of the genius of Stevie's songwriting. His songs are harmonically complex, rich and deep, full of surprises and moments that push against musical cliché (although he doesn't always avoid that in the lyrics, the ballads can tend towards the sentimental), but it all sounds so effortless and intuitive. I could happily listen to him sing the phone book. When I saw him in concert in 2008 in a massive arena, he started singing his first song, and I burst into tears. I love his singing so much. This is an absolute classic, and a record I would recommend to anyone as an album you should own and listen to regularly. I always hear something fresh when I listen to this record, but it is also familiar and inviting, and you can dance to it, too. This is as close to a perfect album as you will ever find.

Cabulosamente bom na verdade, eu estou em 1/3 do álbum e já estou achando brabo. Golden Lady é bem boa. Muito bom mesmo, não esperava que Stevie Wonder fosse tão bom assim. Provavelmente 9/10

Absolutely gorgeous record with so much variety and emotion, possibly my favourite Stevie release (though SITKOL is obviously incredible as well)

Oh this is great! My fave of the Stevie Wonder albums we've had so far. Not nearly as much cloying sweetness. I gotta say I found "Too high" to be amusingly disconcerting! I've always thought of Stevie Wonder as being one of those amazingly wholesome family friendly entertainer types - quite a revelation to hear him singing about being stoned out of his gourd! 😆 Fave tracks - As well as "Too High", the ones I recognized and loved are "Higher Ground" and "He's Misstra Know-It-All", although that latter I think I know more from covers? "Living for the City" is great too...

Nettes Album vom Wunderkind der 70er Jahre. Gute Songs, aber auch solche die in den 70ern hätten bleiben können ;)

Classic

GENIUS

Classic 10/10

Perfect, unusual album, unexpected sound!

don't you worry bout a thing

(Don't read this until you've heard Living For The City for the first time. Trust me on this one.) A funky, soulful, groovy album with some excellent tracks that just slap. Living For The City blew me away though - How it opened about someone growing up in Mississippi, born to a poor family who did everything they could to raise and support him, but making the decision to move to the big city due to the discrimination he faced in Mississippi. It was just a really groovy song, and that synthesizer sounds amazing today, let alone nearly fifty years ago! It was the kind of thing that made me want to dance... At about four minutes in, I thought the song was playing its outro, implying the protagonist's next big step into his new life in the big city, ending on an open-ended note with him hailing the bus for New York City. That's not at all what happened. The song trailed off, with just the synths playing, the spoken dialogue and background noise telling the story about how he got framed for something, arrested, sentenced and incarcerated, his life ruined by racism and injustice. He's left as a homeless man roaming the streets of the city, and the song ends on a message, a moral, to make the world a better place. It's a real gut-punch and a reality check, and I think the worst part is the knowledge that there are still people experiencing this today. Progress has certainly been made, but these injustices and inequalities still exist. It's a wake up call, and a reminder that life isn't fair to everyone. "This place is cruel, nowhere could be much colder. If we don't change, the world will soon be over." How can a song be so groovy and danceable, yet so dark and powerful? The rest of the album is very good too, that groovy, funky sound that's just undeniably Stevie Wonder. It's a great album throughout, but Living For The City certainly takes the cake. To me this album is on par with Songs In The Key Of Life. I'm kicking myself to only now experiencing the legend that is Stevie Wonder, but what a journey it is getting to experience these things for the first time. Favourite: Living For The City

This is almost as perfect an album as you'll ever hear. I'm a bit jealous of anyone who is hearing it for the first time, because it's such a sublime experience. For an album that's 50 years old, it has barely aged a day. It's everything we expect of a Stevie Wonder album - smooth, groovy, elegantly arranged, eminently entertaining. The lyrics are earnest, thoughtful and spiritual, very much of their time but with a message that's relevant today in many ways. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, Living For The City, All In Love Is Fair, Jesus Children Of America, He's Misstra Know-It-All, Higher Ground, Golden Lady, Too High, Visions

This album still sounds relevant today His lyrics hit home, and the music…fantastic Still have this in my collection

An obvious five star choice for this list.

Diverse album with lots of different styles Some of his best vocals Always puts me in a good mood

One of the best albums ever made from a truly talented, soulful and empathetic artist. This album is all Stevie Wonder, every arrangement and every texture. It's simply the pinnacle of his career. A perfect record.

This is one of my favorite albums of all-time. Perfection from front to back. Stevie could do no wrong during this era, and this is proof. His grooves hit as hard as his social commentary. Hard to believe he was only 23 when he dropped this -- harder still to believe it was already his 16th album.

Couldn’t be as good as songs in the key of life but it still is a classic. I was gonna go high four, but the last three songs brought it back for me.

Funny we get this after Blood Sex Sugar Magik, considering the Chili Peppers do a cover of “Higher Ground.” I don’t know how many 5-star albums Mr. Wonder has to his name, but that’s not really my business. I just rate them when I hear them. 5/5.

What a treat! A timeless album, with so much to love, so much to dig into. Some classic Stevie moments… that unending positivity faces off social issues, hardship, family. Higher Ground is such an insanely good sound. Whoever is on those keyboard parts is LOCKED. I think I come back to this album as often as Songs in the Key of Life— it’s a little more digestible, the hits are there, the insane musicality is there, you’ve got Golden Lady, Living for the City— insane post section. Stevie seems to have no limits on these records. It’s a better world that we have this record. 5/5

Perfect album, a great mix of soul and funk. Every song is wonderful. This might be the second best Stevie Wonder album just behind “Songs In The Key Of Life”.

Sheer perfection.

Stevie. Stevie! You can't keep producing these bangers! It should be illegal to hog this much talent and skill! Literally enjoyed everything Stevie Wonder I've ever listened to, though he does have a ton of albums I haven't gotten to yet, mind you. Anyways, great work.

Oh hell yes. Living For The City is one of the most compelling songs ever written. Higher Ground is great. The whole thing stem to stern is impeccable.

A great album

classic blind guy

Great!

I love good funk and this is great funk.

Ottimo albumo, con qualche canzone famosa.

I have never listened to any Stevie Wonder album other than Songs in the Key of Life, but this was an incredible album and I regret not having heard it before. A very well-done album that absolutely deserves a place on this list. Almost every song could be a single.

Perfect

I think I have to go w/ 5/5 on this. The strength of the songs, arrangements, and the fact that Stevie plays just about every instrument on the album pushes into the 5 range.

favs: "Living for the City", "Jesus Children of America", "Higher Ground", "Visions" least fav: "Golden Lady" ig

Stevie Wonder had started his own path with Where I'm coming from and Music of My Mind. Talking Book refined his new freedom. Innervisions through Songs in the Key of Life is when he really set sail, realizing his potential. Great stuff.

I mean, listening to this in 2023, you can't not hear it's influences on the last 50 years of popular music.

Excellent vibes, variety, vision, and vitality here. Not as impressive as Songs in the Key of Life for me, but it's up there.

I understand why Stevie is seen as one of the best after having several of his albums now. Truly just a solid sense of album experience.

Yes amazing artist unique sound vision/story realized! The coolest guy with the biggest mouth. Haha

Outstanding, from top to bottom, groovy from the first note, and interesting throughout. One sort of wishes he’d let the underlying grooves play out a bit more instead of adding so many frills (e.g., frou-frou harmonicas and vocalizing as on “Too High”), but then we’d lose some of the fun comparisons to Bach-like complexity and layering. He’s at once fun to listen to and quite serious in intent. One doesn't necessarily love every track (Stevie can get pretty saccharine), but there’s no doubting the intent, commitment and brilliance of nearly all the execution. There's more fluidity and less preachiness than on some of the other albums, but every bit as much social commentary and commitment. Plus, soul ... just lots and lots of soul that comes shining right thru and it's hard to beat Stevie when it comes to soul.

Stevie Wonder is a genius. Just makes you feel good

So this album absolutely fucks. It's so good. Funky but without being self consciously cool, angry but while maintaining a sense of fun. Wow. Living for the City is brutal, Higher Ground is a tune, Don't You Worry too. So good.

The man doesnt make bad records

A masterpiece.

In a more sophisticated and diverse album, Wonder experiments with all sorts of genres, from the soul, funk, rock, and psychedelia that we're used to, into a greater jazz and Latin influence. It's a suprisingly coherent and smooth record, which some of the smoothest, seamless transitions I've ever heard. Despite performing nearly instrument, the tracks are incredibly lush, with the synths creating a unique and engaging sound that add atmosphere and compliment his styles well. Every song has its hooks and memorable instrumentation choices. Only 2 tracks that didn't blow me away were the ballad "All in Love is Fair" and the sunshine pop "He's Misstra Know-It-All", but there was still plenty to like about them.

Stevie is amazing. Every song is him and they are all pretty much perfect.

Brilliant. Second only to Songs in the Key of Life. Living for the City might be his best song. Masterpiece. 9-10/10

In his "classic period," so naturally it is a masterpiece.

Stone cold classic

Demantur frá upphafi til enda. Ein af þessum plötum sem ég hlustaði mikið á sem pínulítill krakki. Durudduddu kaflinn í Living for the city var í miklu uppáhaldi 😊

-An album that is outside of my usual preferred genre range but had some awesome tracks on it. -"Too High" starts off the album with a nice, chunky bass line. Definitely a fun track. -'Visions" is a little mellow for my tastes -"Living For The City" is a catchy tune, and keeps your attention for the length of it (7 minutes and 22 seconds). the bridge/intermission is an interesting bit of social commentary. I also like the stressed-voice style of singing. -"Golden Lady" is fun. The instruments really hold up the song, although the song will definitely be stuck in your head -'Higher Ground" comes in with a full funk beat. It's so upbeat and I can't help but jam through the chorus -"Jesus Children Of America" is just solid. Nothing stands out crazy. maybe its just the slick funky-ness and the backup singers. -"All In Love Is Fair" is a little slow for my tastes, but is a strong show of quality singing. Not that any of the other tracks have lackluster signing -"Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" is definitely one of the ones that was immediately stuck in my head, and had me jamming along and yelling right along with the chorus. The jump in energy between the slightly more mellow verses and the super-happy choruses is great -"He's Misstra Know-It-All" is a solid track to end off the album, not really in my top songs from the album, but I don't mind it in the slightest. Another one that gets stuck in your head. -An album full of great tracks. Almost all of them are earworms that will stick in your head. luckily if you listen to the whole album, there are so many that it cancels out a little bit. Just from memory, my top tracks would be "Higher Ground" and "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing." Glad I finally got to explore some Stevie Wonder. I think that this one breaks out of 4 stars and into 5 stars. It's outside of my usual musical sphere, but it had such a strong showing, with only 2 tracks that I wasn't too excited about.

Best album so far!

I was under some stone to ignore Stevie Wonder so many times. I always had the impression that he was a sleepy jazzy musician without much attraction for me, but listening to this second album from him on the 1001 list, I only hope they have more albums waiting for me. Strong songs, meaningful lyrics, and powerful interpretation. No complaints about this album.

Top Album

Like this more than Song in the key of life...Great album

One of my favorites

❤️

Genial Stevie Wonder, canciones miticas en este album

Stevie gold.

Classic sound and great songs start to finish.

Pretty funky

Awesome, especially Higher Ground

One of the three stone-cold classics that Stevie Wonder wrote and performed during the sixties (the two other being *Songs In The Key Of Life* and *Talking Book*, naturally...). A large chunk of the modern strands of music still heard today actually stem from Stevie and those albums. "Too High"'s bassline and vocal bridge, " Visions"'s folk-like and dreamy guitar parts, "Living For The City"''s relentless groove, catchy synth bridge and socially aware lyrics, "Higher Ground"'s mysticism over funky "Superstition"-like accents, "All In Love Is Fair"'s tender build-ups... These are only the main highlights in this record where everything actually shines with a radiance rarely seen in the history of modern music *Innervisions* is a gem. So geniously inventive that it leaves you in a state of... wonder. Er... OK. I'll see myself out. ----> Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 700 I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter

Written, produced, arranged and performed (what, 95%?) by Stevie Wonder. It’s just absurd. Higher Ground was the only track I’d heard before. So this was mostly new to me and I was excited about it. The first time through, I was distracted and doing yard work. I was underwhelmed, but knew there had to be more here. Glad I gave it another listen. It grew on me very quickly. His voice is among the all time greats. Vocal runs have the potential to sound cheesy and cliche, but Stevie sets the bar and no one does it better. Often these float over his own background vocals. And the music just grooves. This album is hard to beat and I can’t wait to hear more of this iconic artist.

4.5/5 good soul/funk

I’ve noticed a lot of classic albums have been made by people in the mid twenties. Thriller, The fame monster, pet sounds, good kid maad city, revolver, etc,. And this album is no different

Groooovy Baby!

Already heard, 4.5/5

This album is really good. The songs are catchy and I was grooving while listening along. I think with Stevie Wonder's songs, it's better if I'm not listening too attentively and is just better to just feel the music and go with the groove. If I focus too much on the music, it gets too repetitive, but when I'm not focusing on the music itself, the repetition works a lot better. Favorite song: Golden Lady Worst song: Living for the City

Stevie Wonder est un artiste que j'apprécie beaucoup et cet albu, fait partie des premiers que j'ai entendu. Je l'adore. 5

Hólísjitt hvað þetta er geggjuð plata!!!

Quality. Diverse and interesting songwriting.

Every song on this album is a hit. Great to relax to

I think this is actually my favorite Stevie album, above Songs In The Key Of Life. Anybody who thinks there's any filler on this must've gotten distracted while listening

I ultimately like Songs in the Key of Life better, but this is still so good. Such a calming voice.

From Wiki - "Some reviewers were less enthusiastic. Jon Tiven from Circus argued that there was a lack of memorable material on the album: "Just when Stevie had some momentum going, he went and put together a concept album of homogeneous music and rather typical lyrics. Unlike his last two albums, there are no real low spots on this album, which I suppose is an improvement, but there are no songs on Innervisions which are truly outstanding either. There's no 'Superstition,' no 'I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).' By constructing a solid ground from which to work, Stevie has lowered the ceiling, and put a damper on his talents." No truly oustanding songs? Bet Jon feels silly now. Stevie was 22-23yo when he made this - astonishing!

All of the Stevie wonder singles that I’ve herd before tend to be the best of their time so I hope it’s the same in an album context… Well I wasn’t a massive fan of too high to be honest I get it’s appeal but it wasn’t really my kinda thing. Visions was beautiful and so tender definitely a massive step up in quality from the first song. Living for the city was the first song on the album that felt like a Stevie wonder song in the way that I know of him. It’s an amazing song though a proper groovy 7 minute opus with an awesomely tense bridge that is a true representation of how harsh the racism was at the time. The slamming piano starts off golden lady which eventually forms a funky piano groove it’s another great track. There’s a vortex of funk throughout higher ground an amazing track with brilliant lyrics to start off side two. Jesus children of American is also insanely funky but with a slightly deeper groove, towards the end of the track Stevie sounds like he’s fighting with those amazing backing singers. All in love is fair sounds like the climax of the album a brilliant dramatic sounding piano ballad with bohemian rhapsody esque piano playing. Don’t you worry bout a thing isn’t one of my favourites but there’s bits that I like for example the rather messy intro of Stevie speaking Spanish and the percussion on this is class. The album’s closer he’s misstra know it all is a brilliant closer certainly one of the more upbeat numbers on the album! I know the first track wasn’t to my tastes but the rest of it really was so I'll have to give it a 4.5/5 rounding up to a 5 as literally everything else was perfect!!!

Amazing

The second of five albums from Stevie Wonder’s classic period, and an extraordinary piece work. These songs are incredibly polished and mature for someone so young.

Here is a collection of songs that were crafted by a master and performed perfectly. Stevie Wonder is clearly a singular talent as a singer, musician, songwriter and performer. What a voice! Drawing from gospel and soul, bringing the funk and the spirit, Stevie tells stories that resonate just as true and important today as they were fifty years ago when he wrote them.

Music of My Mind Talking Book this album Fulfillingness' First Finale Songs in the KoL Should all be on this list - so far this seems to be the case.. (3rd SW album generated until now)

A pretty much flawless masterpiece.

Never listened to it and now glad that I did. Might be one of the best albums I've ever heard. 5/5

unreal as always

Awesome, living for the city, higher ground

My spotify tells me I like 6 of the 9 tracks already, so I think this goes into the echelon. True genius at the peak of his powers.

I liked this album a lot. I don't really know what else to say about it. It makes me excited to listen to more Stevie Wonder. My favourite songs were probably Visions and Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing.

Very emotional album with exceptional melodies.

Awesome.

Classic! Banger after banger

Stevie is one of the most talented people in the world. He is a genius at writing and performing music. To create this entire masterpiece at 23 incredible. I’m in awe of how good Stevie Wonder is.

sorry my last review of Stevie Wonder (Fulfillingness’ First Finale) was pretty cringey I was fucking tired and while I really do love that album, I didn’t know how to put that love into words so what I said didn’t really make sense anyway, when I got this album, I listened to it a good 4-5 times in a row it’s criminally short but at least the songs have so much layer to them that upon each re-listen, I found myself noticing more and more genius subtleties behind the production anyway, I don’t know what else to say the Stevie Wonder trilogy (from this album to Songs in the Key of Life) is fucking incredible :)

C’est toujours spécial avec Stevie. Ça groove à mort, c’est harmoniquement très riche, les arrangement sont superbes, les mélodies aussi et les textes sont toujours en quète d’un monde meilleur, sans argne.

oh yes baby 🤭🤘🏼 → 1. golden lady 2. don’t you worry ‘bout a thing 3. he’s misstra know-it-all

Super chill, not as intense as Songs In The Key Of Life. 'Jesus children of America' is pretty badass. nice key changes. ;'don't you worry about a thing' sounds like sex and the city theme song ripped off the first bit

One of my MANY favorite Stevie Wonder albums! I absolutely love every Stevie album from his 70s output. I think Golden Lady is my favorite from this album. I'd give this album a MILLION stars if I could!

In 1973, this must have been light-years ahead of its time. Really an amazing album. 5/5.

I am familiar with most of these tracks from compilation albums from Stevie. It is well worth the time to experience an album as originally intended. Love it!!

Freaking finally! I've been waiting for this one. These songs are gorgeous, deep, and timeless. They help me celebrate the good times and help get me through the bad. Love it love it love it.

I’m not sure how I’ve managed to live my entire life never listening to an entire Stevie Wonder album, but that was the sad state of affairs until today. I absolutely love Innervisions. It’s soulful, sometimes jazzy style and fabulous synths were an instant love match. “Living For The City” was already one of my favorite Stevie songs. And I went in to this loving “Higher Ground,” “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing,” and “All In Love Is Fair.” So I already knew half the album. But the context the album provides elevates these great tracks further. So nice spending some quality time with Stevie Wonder. This album easily exceeded my high expectations.

Stevies nästbästa.

Incredibly soulful and impressive. The passion and heatedness of the message he is trying to convey perfectly pairs with the funky music.

Just a genuinely fun album - plus I love his Higher Ground

A Stevie Opus Belfarcha

It's Stevie. Living For the City and Higher Ground are enough to earn the five stars.

Perfect sunny day album

Wat een fijn album, niet verwacht

Might be premature, but new favourite Stevie album? August 10, 2022

I had no idea. Incredible vocals. Emotion. Wow.

One of my faves of all time. Stevie, what a legend.

Probably his best album. Automatic 5 stars.

Cool uses of ambient sound and spoken bits on several tracks. I didn't realize "Don't you worry bout a thing" was a Stevie track I thought Incognito did that themselves. Fantastic album.

This is an album that is of the highest significance. Although less harmonious than the rest of the album, I credit Living for the City for helping me as a child to be sensitive that life was less fair for others than it was for me, and to realize how scary that must be. I think it is one of the most important songs of the 1970's. I personally have a very small collection of vinyls that I retain and this is one of them. All in Love is Fair is the lowest point for me, but it's still extremely good. Near perfect album.

4.6 + Part of Wonder's five-string master opus of albums from the early 70s. Every song on here is great.

I knew Stevie was funky but not this funky. The musicality and song writing is next level genius.

Great album showing Wonder’s range. Collected 3 songs on my playlist.

Terrific songs and a video that captures it time perfectly. So many highlights of his career on this album.

trop heureuse de passer à Stevie Wonder après l'enfer Yank Crime, je décide de mettre 5, ça tombe bien l'album est super

Insane to think that at this point Stevie Wonder was 11 years into his recording career, but only 23 years old. This album is an amazing work from an amazing artist, what else can I say?

Stevie Wonder is a musical genius and this is a perfect album.

one of the great

Brilliant

Just wonderful. The invention and joy on this beautiful thing 😍

How can this album not give you anything but wonderous joy?

Amazing album. Loved his vocals and the lyrics.

Such a great album especially for someone who does not gravitate towards that music at all. It was enjoyable the entire way through

This was WONDERFUL. Stands the test of time - Stevie is a legend. Every song is a catchy party starter. Loved it!

Putting this album on is like instant sunshine. Great songs (pretty much every song is a winner) are married with a funky backing (love the synth/keyboard sound), immaculate arrangements topped with Stevie Wonder's creamy sublime vocals.

"New york City, skyscrapers and everthing" if I could have given this album a 6 I would have. Probably one of the best albums of all time and Stevie's masterpiece. The songs and the lyrics tell a story of america that is both joyous and dark. From mishra know it all to living for the city the story of injustice is told. But there's more to it love songs party songs. This is not just story of oppression but joy and hope as well. Dont you worry about a thing.

One of Stevie Wonders masterpieces. Brilliant album.

Stevie's finest album. Has long been a favourite of mine. A true musical genius, plus possessor of possibly the finest vocal cords ever gifted to a human.

I have so much love for this album!!! Even down to the cover art which is a stunning 70s DELIGHT. Pure talent, innovation, passion, and artistry is conveyed in this masterpiece. It's devastating and exploding with joy all at once. Packed with soul and important messages. Ugh I just love it so much!! Epic 5 star perfection, thank you so much Stevie for bringing us this album. What a legend.

Smooth

idk yet

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Too high, Visions, Living for the city, Golden lady, Higher ground, Don’t you worry about a thing

I'm shocked again by the newness of Stevie Wonder. Some of it's thanks to my naïveté, but plenty is due to the enduring influence and complexity of Innervisions. That he was able to put out another great album just a year later is amazing, but this collection contains the better songs by far. What a journey I went on, with the music often mismatched emotionally but always excellent.

Dabbling into subject matters such as racial injustice, drug abuse, hypocritical leaders, empowerment and, of course, love, Innervisions stands as perhaps Stevie Wonder's answer to What's Goin' On; equally as immersive and innovative musically, Innervisions captures Stevie in the turning point of his career as he completes the transformation from prodigy to prolific genius. An incredible chapter in his incomprehensible 70s era.

A brilliant commentary on racism, spirituality, love, and introspection combined with Stevie Wonder’s musical genius. A moving experience with each listen.

I like this. "Visions" is beautiful. Higher Ground is a super hit, I've heard it before. And Stevie Wonder is a genius, can't make bad music. Five star.

The first thing upon listening to "Innervisions" is that it starts out very serious with "Too High"(drugs), "Visions"(why are things so bad) and " Living for the City" (inequality) but turns out extremely varied also including two love ballads, songs of hope and a latin-influence song. There is an earlier 70's funk sound to some songs while other tend towards more straught-forward pop. Stevie performed all the instruments on 7 of 9 songs. I can only think of Prince as a comparable. To me what makes this album standout is the use and mix of all the synthesizers, the Moog bass and all other instruments. The use of the Hohner clavinet (wah wah sound) in "Higher Ground" is worth getting this album alone. Outstanding vocal range and background vocals. No dead weight or bad songs on this record. Outstanding.

Stevie at his height I think three of the albums from the early/mid 70's "Talking Book" "Innervisions" and "Songs In The Key Of Life" are Stevie's best and most creative work. you can hear his musical progression through these and I think "Songs" is his Opus Magnum. But This is a close second with Talking Book. The most revelatory thing is that the genius played most of the instruments on most of the tracks. "He's Mistra Know It All" "Living For The City" "Too High" all favourites but to be fair there isn't a bad song on this album. Already in my collection and justifiably on this list.

I mean, wow. It's Stevie Wonder. What else is there to say? Fave track on here is hard to pick because this album is delightfully relentless with banger after banger. Absolutely loved it, really brightened up my day. But if I had to pick a fave it would be Don't you worry bout a thing. It's got longevity for a reason just like all of his work. So danceable, refreshing, and undeniably bursting with talent.

This albummm

Love me some Stevie Wonder! Not much to save except exceptionally talented in so many ways. Loved the spectrum of all the songs. Could be my top 2 favorite Wonder albums😊

Maravilhoso!

Love it! Nice to hum along

Brilliant.

Alguns dels millors discos de la década són d'ell. Una visió profunda de la música, juntament amb un missatge poderós

Could be a perfect album! Funk, soul, pop. Politics, love and humour. From Stevie’s golden period of colossal 70s LPs.

Excellent and classic

“The fuckin’ crowded city!”

10/10 masterful

10/10. This was really good.

Sounds amazing. 10/10

Stevie Wonder at his best. Not a weak track. Very smooth album.

one of the greatest albums of all times. The songs are a bit too long but this is an amazing mix of black music traditions than sounds fresh as if it was recorded today. In fact, you can hear the influence of this album in many of the current music.

Pure talent.

Good album, last track was the weakest but overall, enjoyed it

I enjoyed this album and was pleasantly surprised that 3 of the songs I knew from my high school years.

Good, easy losteninh

I really enjoyed this. There's a lot more to Stevie Wonder than isn't she lovely etc. Easy to listen to (outside of the courtroom interlude).

Great album, one of his best however I am with Jack White in Hi Fidelty I just don’t like his ballads

Living for the City and Higher Ground are so damn good. Strong 4 on those two alone.

Remember this from childhood, so pretty sure my parents had it! Good album - enjoyed every track and a nice change of pace from The Fall and Van Halen before. Might be worth a purchase if I see it knocking about cheap!

3,7 Highlights: Golden Lady, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing

Life-affirming! It's wild how you could call this like his 4th best effort and not only be justified, but you could also argue that his 4th best record is better than so many artists very best. So I'm not sure how to grade this, on the Stevie Wonder scale? Or on the general music scale? I think that, by the end of this record, I was left with the infectious glow you get when listening to Wonder's music, so I have no choice but to give this a 4/5. He's just so expressive and personal. No one has a mind-to-mouth connection like Stevie Wonder. "Dont You Worry Bout A Thing" and "Higher Ground" are amongst the most warm, invigorating songs. That vocal run at the end of the former track? You could cure disease with it. Meanwhile, the back half of "Living For The City" and "He's Misstra Know It All" have such clear, observant eyes for the societal chasms that separated black america from their fair chances in the 70's. I am once again so glad to go through a Stevie Wonder album and exclaim 'hey I know this song too!' and happily sing along. Stevie Wonder doesnt just lead with his emotions, he embodies the many emotions every human will feel in a lifetime. His talents are a gift unto this world

Between the title and the cyclops-esque cover art, I feel like someone is trolling a little bit here. This record is funky and soulful, but in a way that wouldn’t have been too abrasive for white audiences. I feel like 1973 was peak Funk crossover and I’m sure this album helped that quite a bit. I’d spin this if I had a copy, but I’m not sure I’ll seek one out.

Hermosas letras, corresponden a una época compleja y representan libertad.

Stevie is one of the Goats. Wish I listened to more of his stuff I've tried but it's never really grabbed me fully. This was good. Liked Mr. Know it all song

Really great album, it drips with inspiration. And the production on it is fantastic.

Really liked it, fun funky beats. Some were a like allow but overall really great

Very groovy and funky, can’t wait for more Stevie Wonder

buenos instrumentales, buenos lyrics, buen GROOVE. tiene un par de temas conocidos muy buenos, y otros q me sorprendieron canción fav: Visions

Exceeded my expectations.

High 4.0.

This is such a good album. I've never listened to an entire album by SW before and almost every song is so good. Musically, lyrically, and vocally great. Tempted to give it a 5, but definitely a 4.5. Don't You Worry Bout A Thing is a song I've heard but didn't realize how cool it is until now.

Too High- I like how his voice is distorted thats fun visions- guitar solo how excellent golden lady is fun! gollldennnlaadyyyy I think i had listened to this whole album before at certain points, but there are so many bangers and it was fun to listen to them all at once. Stevie wonder is so great

another great album all in love is fair absolutely legendary. So good overall though not to my taste enough to be given five stars but i really enjoyed

7/10 No escuché casi nada de Stevie Wonder, claramente ya lo conocía pero nunca verdaderamente me pare a escucharlo. Me gustó, estoy seguro de que no es lo mejor de él.

I can't believe this is Stevie Wonder's 16th studio album. I wasn't crazy about it at first but it was grown on me. Golden Lady is a really nice ballad and Living For the City is such a good song. I want to listen to more of Stevie Wonder's earlier work to understand his transition from Little Stevie Wonder to his more mature work here. It is really cool to see how outspoken he is here on police violence and other topics of the time.

Really great album. It's soulful, funky, the instrumentals are great, and Stevie's smooth voice, dang. 8/10

Visions Living For The City Golden Lady Higher Ground Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing He's Mistral Know-It-All

Probably aware of half the songs on this. Higher Ground was my favorite as it's so damn funky. Some hits and a couple of misses. I look forward to hearing more Stevie

whoooo - i rated others poorly - i wld give this 4.5 but cannot

Stevie Wonder hits all the right notes here. It's a great album that shows a transition in his musical style

Es Stevie en verdad un bombazo y tiene canciones míticas

Song Ratings: Too High 5.3/10 There was way too much going on just kind of felt like a bunch of songs thrown together. Visions 7.5/10 The type of song you would ride off into the sunset to. Living For The City 8.6/10 If the song had ended at 4 minutes it would be a 9 still an amazing song though. Golden Lady 8.1/10 Loved the rhythm head was bobbing for sure. Higher Ground 7/10 The beat felt familiar but I cannot put a finger on what it is. Jesus Children Of America 6.3/10 Loved the message, the song not quite as much. All In Love Is Fair 8.3/10 Genuinely had me floating out of my seat. Don’t Worry About A Thing 8.4/10 Timeless banger. Mr. Know It All 7.8/10 One of the strongest chorus’ on the album. Album Rating: 7.8/10 Review: I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. This is a great way to start this journey and I am so excited to discover so much new music. The sounds that Stevie Wonder makes are unmatched. The vocals to instrument combo are second to none. The best song was Living For The City. It had even more potential to be good without the outro that I didn’t love to be honest. The best vocal performance was for sure All In Love Is Fair that song had me levitating out of my seat. Overall a very solid album by one of the greatest to ever do it.

Excellent. Might be a 5.

Yeah it’s good. Stevie Wonder is excellent.

This album didn't really hit for me at first, but after a couple relistens I think this a great sounding album. What stands out the most is how incredibly funky every track is regardless of energy or tone. The sound is both familiar and fresh which to me is always a sign of a well crafted album. My favorite track was "All in Love Is Fair", and my least favorite was "He's Misstra Know-It-All".

Glad I listened through it.

Funky, soulful, creative, well-written, well- sung. Yep, it’s Stevie. 4/5

Best Song: Higher Ground It's hard to hate on Stevie Wonder, and I have no plans to do so. This was good. I wouldn't call myself well versed in Stevie as every song on this was a first for me, with the exception of Higher Ground. Overall, it's good. Will I listen to it often? I doubt it but that's not Stevie's fault, more my musical tastes. 4/5.

didn't realize how many songs I know on this album! would def re-listen

Did not expect that. Thoroughly enjoyed.

På min anden liste havde jeg for nyligt Songs in the key of life. MEN! Wow. Det her album. Det synes jeg faktisk er fedt. 3.9

Stevie er altså en dejlig dreng. Det er bare lækkert og dejligt!

lækkert, funky & godt - men jeg er bare ikke helt så blown away som jeg havde regnet med

He just does not miss. This album is a spiritual experience. Faves: Living For The City, Golden Lady, Higher Ground, All In Love Is Fair, He's Misstra Know-It-All

One of Stevie’s early 70s masterpieces. The centrepiece is ‘Living for the City’, a 7 minute tale of NY eating up kids from the sticks and spitting them out. The rest of the album takes a similar tack, with Stevie’s soulful vocals telling tales of love, caution and partying. And there’s a little track called ‘Higher Ground’ which has one of the funkiest basslines ever and is guaranteed to get your foot tapping. The perfect running time of 44 minutes helps, too!!

Delightful music

Great album.

My rating 3.7. Pleasant surprise. New of other Wonder albums but had. It heard this one. Speaks to the same problems occurring in the USA as Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece, What’s Going On.

I’d put Stevie Wonder in the same league as Marvin Gaye as a soul singer, even though they approached music very differently. Marvin often sounded smooth and introspective, while Stevie seemed more interested in pushing things forward, blending soul with funk, jazz, pop, and all sorts of other influences. That’s exactly what makes 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 so interesting. For a soul album, it feels remarkably ambitious and forward-thinking. The songs are full of ideas, but they never feel complicated for the sake of it. No matter how adventurous the arrangements become, Stevie always brings them back to strong melodies and memorable performances. Even the cover reflects that spirit. It’s striking, symbolic, and a little unconventional, much like the music itself. 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 feels like an artist who was already operating beyond the usual boundaries of soul music, and that’s what keeps the album engaging even fifty years later.

Absolutely love this album, maybe Stevie's best.

o i’m not sure exactly what i need to be posting, but i listened to this i was crafting & i can 100% say that this is a great album for that. my highlight songs are as followed: living for the city, golden lady & all is fair. living for the city happens to be my favorite due to the emotion you feel in stevie wonders voice that invokes that 70s sound that anyone can recognize. i love how interactive stevie is with his use of the synth as he takes you along the city. overall, this album makes me wanna groove out & walk through the neighborhoods of my own city

Really good album - every song is decent - living for the city a bit naff with the speaking and “city sounds” but otherwise all top draw

Excellent Stevie, part of his magical period when he could do no wrong, a near peak.

Great, classic Stevie Wonder

I enjoyed this album a bit more than I thought it would. My favorite song was he’s misstra know it all. My least favorite surprisingly was too high

Saturday, 30 May, 2026 Stevie Wonder begins his epic run. Innervisions has moments of brilliance.

A solid 4

Agréablement surpris par celui-ci même si on a été submergés de Stevie depuis le début. On a vraiment l'impression que chaque instrument est organiquement présent dans notre oreille, de quoi nous donner de la scène une... vision intérieure ? Playlist pick : Too High

Great album! I love Stevie and he is such a unique voice and artist! Truly one of the greats!

oh so that's why they call it Soul i actually only saved 4 songs from this album but it's perfect background listening. singlehandedly got me through a horridly humid morning walk lol

My previous Stevie Wonder album to review was Talking Book, which was his album released before Innervisions. Its evident the amount of professional and musical growth that has occurred between these 2 albums. As the wiki description says, less love ballads and more synth and electronic sounds. The A side is higher energy including the highlight, "Higher Ground". The B side was slower, and while good, was less enjoyable for me.

Hell yeah: Wat onbekendere stevie wonder leuk Wat sipper dan de bekende nummers van m. Dat dus. Maar echt mooi

Only first listened to this album about two months ago in Croatia so the happy association heavily impacts how I feel about the album as a whole. Stevie also always puts me in a swell mood with the exception of one song. In my time as a mailroomer, the security guard during my shifts would play a playlist/radio that rotated the same 10 songs, one of which was "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" causing me to hate it with a passion few songs can contend with. However, other tracks make up for it: "Living for the City" "He's Misstra Know-It-All" "Visions" and "Higher Ground" (in limited quantities).

Amazing stuff here 4+

A good blend of genres and sounds and tempos. Really enjoyed - great album to listen to on a sunny day

Really enjoyed the variety of the tracks on this, such a chill vibe. Love big Stevie!!!

Gorgeous album. Living for the city, Golden lady, higher ground is a great string and it ends super strong as well.

First time listening to a full Stevie Wonder album and I really enjoyed it. Just pure good vibes music

funk soul bro

Like a ripe banana, soft, smooth and funky

Stevie never misses

Enjoyable! Fun vibe

Folksy influence track 2, something almost 60s French Cinema. Living in the City is a great reinvention of classic bluesy narrative songwriting, making it both a classic and deeply new age.

timeless sounds, brilliant production

Verryyyy nice sounding album

Contains "Higher Ground" and "Living for the City", features Wonder's incomparable musicianship and talent. Singular songwriting, funky synth, drum, and harmonica riffs with soulful singing. Talking Book probably edges out this one for best SW album though - "Superstition" will always be the gold standard I compare other SW songs to. His early-career Motown work is dynamite too, so don't sleep on that.

This album flew by in a breeze. It was full of such diverse sounds from jazz to funk to piano ballads, even a little Cuban-esque groove in "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing." The fact that an artist's 16th album is this good is pretty mind blowing. I don't think it's a perfect album, I can take or leave some of the songs, but damn if isn't a great album.

Stevie is always a wonder

What immediately strikes me is how so much of this could be released today and still sound fresh.

Owned Wonder-ful

Every Stevie album is wonderful. Higher Ground is a jam. The album is good, not as standout as some of the others, but his synth work is unreal.

A well crafted record. Higher Ground of course the top of the album. Stevie Wonder is someone I've always wanted to like more than I ve done. I did three retries with this album, to finally getting to that point. The components: 1. Musical composition 2. Lyrics 3. Production With each attempt I tried to focus on each context. That thorough work in this album what made it finally. Focusing on one context only would have made me land on a three, but when all came together, a four is well deserved.

Very groovy and soullike

Note pleasing, too much vocal over trying

Love the vibes!

Stevie is one of those artists who, even if he's not really my type, I can't deny is music is very good. For each song that makes me think "this is starting to get a little bit boring, there are two funky bangers full of life and joy.

figo, non l'ho ascoltato abbastanza bene che stavo studiando. metto 4 stelle per tornare a sentirlo meglio

richtig gut und nice, DONT YOU WORRY BOUT A THIIIIIIING, ich wusste nicht dass dieses lied gar nicht so bekannt ist, naja

oh i just listened to this the other day. might not listen to it tmr bc it’s been so soon. been going through a stevie wonder dive.

7.3 / 10

Nice background music, some familiar tracks

Classic 70s Stevie Wonder, his second best album. Plenty of hits and a fun listen with thematical lyrics and a blend of genres.

Really good album. Some great base lines and funky drumming, it’s best when it’s being funky but even the slower songs are pretty good. 4.2

This is getting a four for Higher Ground alone. An absolute tune. The rest of the album is decent. Living For The City being another standout.

Really good. Lots of great songs and only a few I would skip. Higher Ground and Don't You Worry Bout a Thing are the highlights for me.

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

This is not just a great soul album. It is one of those records where musical intelligence, emotional force, social awareness, and pure groove all hit the room at once.

Nothing i can say that every 5 review hasn't already so I'll simply justify my 4. Visions is a horrible ballad. To my ears, at least. I hate that fusion keyboard and on the nose social commentary. One turd amongst perfection.

3.5 rounded up because everyone seems to rave about this guy. I didn't think it was amazing, it feels a bit overhyped, I don't know.

Pretty great not much else to say

La verdad es que este álbum esta bastante bien. Lo mas a destacar es su voz y la utilización de instrumentos y las instrumentales

Man there is a lot more to Stevie Wonder than the Isn't She Lovely era. So much funk it's almost angry. It's phunk.

so much soul 7.5/10 Will I add this album to my library? yes

Some absolute heaters on here. We've all heard Higher Ground and Living for the City, but Living for the City has always been a personal favorite. Too High and Golden Lady ripped. Stevie's musical genius is on full display here. 4.5/5 Might take this one for another lap and decide it's a 5.

some supremely funky tracks on Innervisions. those keys -- whew! y'all already know I'm a pass on the ballads, tho they weren't so bad. a lot of these songs could be a minute or so shorter, but the communal feel makes up for it most of the time. "Jesus Children of America" recalls the work Sly Stone was doing on "There's a Riot Goin' On" and it works.

Meu primeiro contato real com uma obra do Stevie Wonder, ótimas impressões.

Banger🔥

Enjoyable simply anything Stevie does is gold , not my favourite album of his but some ultimate gems higher ground been covered he’ll of a lot

An absolute classic for me, I've listened to this countless times in my life!

Classic Stevie, absolutely great stuff.

i was not expecting myself to actually like this album this much. golden lady my fav

Pretty good but I dont think this is steve’s best

Esteban maravilla

Rating: 9/10 Highlight: He’s Misstra-Know-It-All Lowlight: Golden Lady

4 lovely stuff

Love Stevie. Couple of really memorable songs on this album

Really good, but only taking a star off because he has other albums I like better

imperative that i listened to this

Pure 70s R&B. Very groovy, fun synthy riffs, definitely a late night album or a dinner playlist addition. Standout tracks: Too High, Golden Lady, Higher Ground (duh), Dont you worry 'bout a thing.

A drawback of growing up in the '80s is thinking of Stevie Wonder as only the "I Just Called to Say I Love You" guy. Eventually I got wise, though, and this is great. "Living for the City," "Higher Ground"—somewhere out there is a person who prefers the RHCP's version, may God have mercy on their soul—"He's Misstra Know-It-All" are bangers, and there's plenty more good stuff on here. Slower moments like "All in Love is Fair" and "Jesus Children of America" don't do much for me, but the rest makes up for it.

I love some good jazz music

Kaunas

I like Stevie unique sound. Sounds almost unresolved. You don’t expecting him to go there but he does it anyway! Bonus points for the Chili’s cover 😉

V.good album. Dont think theres a bad song. Even the Spanish one. Needs a 2nd listwn to be fully appreciated i thi k. Golden Lady is great. One of the top three songs ever written about apples. Gets an extra half point as a fellow blindmun.

Je comprends pourquoi il fait parti du top mais je ne suis pas sensible à sa proposition.

The hits are unimpeachable, but I've heard them so many times ... and the non-hits were nothing special. 4 stars because the highs are so high.

classic

Not as good as Talking Book but still solid. 4/5
