The Allmusic review mentions funky, but I just find this to be a little lightweight and lacking. Stevie went forward in time to steal this RHCP song and record it before they could to make ALL THE MONIES! Eh. 3 / 5 stars.

Golden Lady... Oh Golden Lady...

Impressionante como mesmo quando algum gênero musical não é muito teu estilo, quando feito de forma magnífica, consegue te conquistar. Impossível não se surpreender com a instrumentação presente no álbum e ainda por cima tocada por um músico cego ? Inspirador. Acho que reconheci 2 músicas do álbum mas não sabia que eram do Stevie, portanto eu diria que foi o meu primeiro contato oficial com a sua obra. E que contato. Músicas vibrantes que me faziam querer parar o que estava fazendo e começar a dançar. Definitivamente irei explorar mais suas criações e adicioná-lo às minhas playlists.

I understand why Stevie is seen as one of the best after having several of his albums now. Truly just a solid sense of album experience.

I definitely feel like the title of the very first song. To high. Although stating that I'm in a constant vision quest is a cliché. This are the vision of a blind man. I'm generally scared of the deterioration of my body, but I can't imagine loosing the little eyesight I have. I guess I'm only a techno optimist because of all the oftalmological aid I relay upon. And even with that I know ill suffer tremendously. Just imagine the effects on my vision quest. Soothing sound matching perfectly the color pallet of the cover album art. I want to keep exploring dreams and chart does that have already been explored and materialised.

I enjoy some Stevie every moment of the day. What a musician! Great album, but a little too soft and not my favorite Stevie album.

Its OK - a couple of nice tunes - but it primarily stands in the middle

I feel like the funk lives on from this album.

Though it starts a little slow for me, the album shows a pretty surprising diversity of soul, funk and a caribbean cha cha vibe of Don't You Worry. All really easy to enjoy, and Higher Ground is a funktastic amazing party of a song.

So replayable. Golden Lady is such a banger.

Outstanding, from top to bottom, groovy from the first note, and interesting throughout. One sort of wishes he’d let the underlying grooves play out a bit more instead of adding so many frills (e.g., frou-frou harmonicas and vocalizing as on “Too High”), but then we’d lose some of the fun comparisons to Bach-like complexity and layering. He’s at once fun to listen to and quite serious in intent. One doesn't necessarily love every track (Stevie can get pretty saccharine), but there’s no doubting the intent, commitment and brilliance of nearly all the execution. There's more fluidity and less preachiness than on some of the other albums, but every bit as much social commentary and commitment. Plus, soul ... just lots and lots of soul that comes shining right thru and it's hard to beat Stevie when it comes to soul.

Fantastic very 70's cover art, love it. The opening few songs, surprisingly, do not catch me at all. Golden Lady is pretty and Higher Ground is spectacular, and the album stays strong from there especially Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing. The beginning put me off and my first listen was 3 stars but a second listen brought that up to 4. Normally Stevie Wonder doesn't have to grow on me but there we are.

I didn't think I would like this from the first song but I couldn't stop listening to the rest.

Applauded as genre-defining as well as a mark of a career turning point. Apparently, this is the beginning of Stevie's matured songwriting. For some reason, I found it less interesting than its predecessor, "Talking Book". While this is undeniably deeper and more mature than the mentioned album, this album is also more restrained and more "standard". The grooves and the great voice are there, but I find it droning after a while. Don't worry, it's probably just me and my terrible new earphones.

So this album absolutely fucks. It's so good. Funky but without being self consciously cool, angry but while maintaining a sense of fun. Wow. Living for the City is brutal, Higher Ground is a tune, Don't You Worry too. So good.

I can't say I'm completely convinced, some quite funky grooves that I nod along to, but there's not much here for me to fall in love with. Although I am surprised by how pleasant Stevie Wonder's voice is, which works better for the energetic cuts, rather than the ballads. Apparently I like the songs with the least amount of streams on Spotify more than the more popular ones. I did like the Latin tinge in \"Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing\". The closing song seems surprisingly modern for 1973, could have been made 20 years later. Reminding me of what could have been a solid alternative rock record, sort of like \"Out of my head\", if only a bit more funky. The second half of the album is stronger than the first half in my opinion I can also see clearly how much Stevie Wonder influenced Anderson Paak.

Honestly kind of bored by it. It had elements that I’m sure shaped a lot of music but it felt boy-bandy and repetitive. I felt like I was supposed to focus on the lyrics then and those weren’t about anything interesting. The last song on the album had some different, interesting things going on though.

With this effort Wonder is a bit more contemplative and has several larger story tracks and sounds where a deeper message can be found. By maintaining his backing tracks of conventional love and soul tracks Wonder is able to make a unique experience that shows his abilities at things other than making cute ear worms.

Enjoyable enough, lots to like here and Stevie is in fine form. Solid, yet I was starting to lose interest about half way through. Not really a big fan of Stevie, though it's hard to dislike him and Higher Ground is definitely a great song!

It’s a stevie wonder album

In a more sophisticated and diverse album, Wonder experiments with all sorts of genres, from the soul, funk, rock, and psychedelia that we're used to, into a greater jazz and Latin influence. It's a suprisingly coherent and smooth record, which some of the smoothest, seamless transitions I've ever heard. Despite performing nearly instrument, the tracks are incredibly lush, with the synths creating a unique and engaging sound that add atmosphere and compliment his styles well. Every song has its hooks and memorable instrumentation choices. Only 2 tracks that didn't blow me away were the ballad "All in Love is Fair" and the sunshine pop "He's Misstra Know-It-All", but there was still plenty to like about them.

I learn something new almost every day - I really didn't know that "Higher Ground" was recorded by Stevie Wonder (in fact I didn't even know what is the proper name of this song). Innervisions is as very funky album, which, from what I read, is known for being a golden standard of R&B. In that regard I am only partially keen on this type of genre. I love the funkier and full of groove songs like "Higher Ground", or "Living for the City", but the slower ballads, or love songs aren't my kind of jam. One thing for sure, Wonder's voice is absolutely amazing, regardless of the tempo or type of the songs. The only issue is that slower tracks don't have that magic aura in it for me. I think this album falls somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but out of respect to Stevie and everything he has done, I will give it a four stars. It's a really good record to listen to once in a while, to slow down and enjoy the moment for a bit.

Brilliant. Second only to Songs in the Key of Life. Living for the City might be his best song. Masterpiece. 9-10/10

This is the Stevie Wonder album I've been waiting for. I thought 'Songs in the Key of Life' was a work of genius but outstayed it's welcome, and 'Talking Book' was great but brought down by overly sentimental and sickly sweet lyrics. This doesn't have those flaws. It's concise, catchy, extremely groovy and funky with interesting lyrics providing insightful social commentary. It just lacks that one big banger to be a 5 star album. -An album that is outside of my usual preferred genre range but had some awesome tracks on it. -"Too High" starts off the album with a nice, chunky bass line. Definitely a fun track. -'Visions" is a little mellow for my tastes -"Living For The City" is a catchy tune, and keeps your attention for the length of it (7 minutes and 22 seconds). the bridge/intermission is an interesting bit of social commentary. I also like the stressed-voice style of singing. -"Golden Lady" is fun. The instruments really hold up the song, although the song will definitely be stuck in your head -'Higher Ground" comes in with a full funk beat. It's so upbeat and I can't help but jam through the chorus -"Jesus Children Of America" is just solid. Nothing stands out crazy. maybe its just the slick funky-ness and the backup singers. -"All In Love Is Fair" is a little slow for my tastes, but is a strong show of quality singing. Not that any of the other tracks have lackluster signing -"Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" is definitely one of the ones that was immediately stuck in my head, and had me jamming along and yelling right along with the chorus. The jump in energy between the slightly more mellow verses and the super-happy choruses is great -"He's Misstra Know-It-All" is a solid track to end off the album, not really in my top songs from the album, but I don't mind it in the slightest. Another one that gets stuck in your head. -An album full of great tracks. Almost all of them are earworms that will stick in your head. luckily if you listen to the whole album, there are so many that it cancels out a little bit. Just from memory, my top tracks would be "Higher Ground" and "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing." Glad I finally got to explore some Stevie Wonder. I think that this one breaks out of 4 stars and into 5 stars. It's outside of my usual musical sphere, but it had such a strong showing, with only 2 tracks that I wasn't too excited about.

Innervisions is cool Stevie Wonder; not at his genre-defining best, nowhere near some of the dross he turned out in releasing so many albums either. It's a good to very good effort, Higher Ground is obviously the best track, a positive 3/5.

This is definitely a better album than the previous one(s?) of his that we've had. Not really a standout song, but a much more coherent album with a bit more edge than the lift music that he can sometimes drift into. Happy to give this one a 3, it still doesn't excite me any more than that and I probably won't go back, but glad that I've listened to it.

Unlike a lot of the repeat offenders in this list, I’m never mad when more Stevie pops up. Is this album sufficiently different from any of his other ones? Thus necessitating its inclusion on this list? No. Does it still slap balls? Yes.

Innervisions is the 16th album by American singer-songwriter & musician Stevie Wonder. This influential funky soul album is considered Wonder's greatest from his "classic period" and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The variety of instruments, musical styles, themes, and lyrics were all thanks to Stevie Wonder who recorded 7 of the 9 tracks completely on his own. This was an awesome album that remained popular for many years after release, and I think everyone should give it a listen.

Best album so far!

I was under some stone to ignore Stevie Wonder so many times. I always had the impression that he was a sleepy jazzy musician without much attraction for me, but listening to this second album from him on the 1001 list, I only hope they have more albums waiting for me. Strong songs, meaningful lyrics, and powerful interpretation. No complaints about this album.

One of the three stone-cold classics that Stevie Wonder wrote and performed during the sixties (the two other being *Songs In The Key Of Life* and *Talking Book*, naturally...). A large chunk of the modern strands of music still heard today actually stem from Stevie and those albums. "Too High"'s bassline and vocal bridge, " Visions"'s folk-like and dreamy guitar parts, "Living For The City"''s relentless groove, catchy synth bridge and socially aware lyrics, "Higher Ground"'s mysticism over funky "Superstition"-like accents, "All In Love Is Fair"'s tender build-ups... These are only the main highlights in this record where everything actually shines with a radiance rarely seen in the history of modern music *Innervisions* is a gem. So geniously inventive that it leaves you in a state of... wonder. Er... OK. Written, produced, arranged and performed (what, 95%?) by Stevie Wonder. It’s just absurd. Higher Ground was the only track I’d heard before. So this was mostly new to me and I was excited about it. The first time through, I was distracted and doing yard work. I was underwhelmed, but knew there had to be more here. Glad I gave it another listen. It grew on me very quickly. His voice is among the all time greats. Vocal runs have the potential to sound cheesy and cliche, but Stevie sets the bar and no one does it better. Often these float over his own background vocals. And the music just grooves. This album is hard to beat and I can’t wait to hear more of this iconic artist.

Decent album loved a couple of songs on here

I love Stevie Wonder, and feel a special affinity for him as a native Detroiter. This album is great and showcases a more mature Stevie Wonder, but I have to admit that I like the funkier, less mature Stevie Wonder a bit better. I'm not as much a fan of the slower, romantic ballads (e.g. Visions, Golden Lady, All in Love is Fair). There are still some great, funky classics here like Living for the City and Higher Ground. Whenever I travel to NYC for work the first thing I always say when I get out of my Lyft at the hotel is, "New York City, just like I pictured it. Sky scrapers and everything!" Great album, 4 stars.

This album is really good. The songs are catchy and I was grooving while listening along. I think with Stevie Wonder's songs, it's better if I'm not listening too attentively and is just better to just feel the music and go with the groove. If I focus too much on the music, it gets too repetitive, but when I'm not focusing on the music itself, the repetition works a lot better. Favorite song: Golden Lady Worst song: Living for the City

Visions is a dope song. Both production and vocals have strong and weak points. I like the more mellow songs, and the upbeat songs don't hold up as well.

Love this album. What a classic, can't go wrong

I do love his voice, but the music itself is a bit boring for me. Also, Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of higher ground is way better in my opinion.

I think this is actually my favorite Stevie album, above Songs In The Key Of Life. Anybody who thinks there's any filler on this must've gotten distracted while listening

At first I was excited, then realized how boring this was. Until the final act, then I was dancing in my seat and singing along.

I ultimately like Songs in the Key of Life better, but this is still so good. Such a calming voice.

Nothing will top Songs In the Key Of Life, but Innervisions is a wonderful album.

Not as goods Key of Life but still funky and thought provoking

All of the Stevie wonder singles that I’ve herd before tend to be the best of their time so I hope it’s the same in an album context… Well I wasn’t a massive fan of too high to be honest I get it’s appeal but it wasn’t really my kinda thing. Visions was beautiful and so tender definitely a massive step up in quality from the first song. Living for the city was the first song on the album that felt like a Stevie wonder song in the way that I know of him. It’s an amazing song though a proper groovy 7 minute opus with an awesomely tense bridge that is a true representation of how harsh the racism was at the time. The slamming piano starts off golden lady which eventually forms a funky piano groove it’s another great track. There’s a vortex of funk throughout higher ground an amazing track with brilliant lyrics to start off side two. Jesus children of American is also insanely funky but with a slightly deeper groove, towards the end of the track Stevie sounds like he’s fighting with those amazing backing singers. All in love is fair sounds like the climax of the album a brilliant dramatic sounding piano ballad with bohemian rhapsody esque piano playing. Don’t you worry bout a thing isn’t one of my favourites but there’s bits that I like for example the rather messy intro of Stevie speaking Spanish and the percussion on this is class. The album’s closer he’s misstra know it all is a brilliant closer certainly one of the more upbeat numbers on the album! I know the first track wasn’t to my tastes but the rest of it really was so I'll have to give it a 4.5/5 rounding up to a 5 as literally everything else was perfect!!!

Stevie didn’t disappoint on this and finally some of the hits I know- Higher Ground & Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing. Loving Stevie’s vibe and can see (no shade) how influential he is/was/will be My first write up was better, but this sums up my general thoughts. Go Stevie!

Stevie really has the sauce…and it seems like he always has. I’m not sure if I like this as an album experience as much as the other Stevie record we’ve listened to so far, but I think this project has more stand out tunes..which is more my speed anyways. This guy is pretty swag when it comes to the music junk, I don’t need to hear much more out of him 😎

After having Fulfillingness’ First Finale a few months ago and loving it, I had high hopes for this. I wouldn’t say I was disappointed because it is still great music, but not as initially catchy or impactful. 8/10

Drawing from gospel and soul, bringing the funk and the spirit, Stevie tells stories that resonate just as true and important today as they were fifty years ago when he wrote them.

I think Stevie Wonder is probably one of those musicians where I think I only know a handful of songs by him, but when I actually look into it I actually know loads. My favourite of his (Sir Duke) is unfortunately not on this album, but there are still some that I know to be fantastic. Songs I already knew: Living For The City, Higher Ground, Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing Favourite after listening: Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing, Living For The City Overall: 7/10 Stevie was 23 when this was released, and it was his sixteenth album. Can you wrap your head around that? Musicians were just built different back then. When I looked at the track list and recognised some of the songs I hoped that this would be a great listen. However, aside from the ones I already knew, everything else fell a little flatter. That is not to say they were bad by any means, but goodness just compares that way with greatness. Overall, a very good album but I’ll likely only return to the songs I already knew anyway.

Ooof I kinda didn’t listen. But I believe it was about civil rights activism back in his time and him being blind and singing such songs were a bit amazing.

I was super not digging this one as it kicked off. Sometimes Stevie comes across so soft that it's off-putting. But, somewhere around "Higher Ground" he stopped playing around and started laying it down. Ended up really enjoying "Innervisions" far more than expected.

My spotify tells me I like 6 of the 9 tracks already, so I think this goes into the echelon. True genius at the peak of his powers.

I liked this album a lot. I don't really know what else to say about it. It makes me excited to listen to more Stevie Wonder. My favourite songs were probably Visions and Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing.

Stevie is one of the most talented people in the world. He is a genius at writing and performing music. To create this entire masterpiece at 23 incredible. I’m in awe of how good Stevie Wonder is.

Some was so much better than I was expected - I always found Stevie Wonder a little cringey. Very talented, but just didn't vibe with it. There was some of that on this album, but the majority was just great.

sorry my last review of Stevie Wonder (Fulfillingness’ First Finale) was pretty cringey I was fucking tired and while I really do love that album, I didn’t know how to put that love into words so what I said didn’t really make sense anyway, when I got this album, I listened to it a good 4-5 times in a row it’s criminally short but at least the songs have so much layer to them that upon each re-listen, I found myself noticing more and more genius subtleties behind the production anyway, I don’t know what else to say the Stevie Wonder trilogy (from this album to Songs in the Key of Life) is fucking incredible :)

I think Stevie is incredible for so many reasons, but for reasons I cannot explain, I've never been wildly into his music. I like quite a few of his songs, to be sure. But overall, I've never really reached for his stuff.

C’est toujours spécial avec Stevie. Ça groove à mort, c’est harmoniquement très riche, les arrangement sont superbes, les mélodies aussi et les textes sont toujours en quète d’un monde meilleur, sans argne.

On ne peut pas dire que ça ne groove pas, mais ce n'est pas un coup de coeur instantané pour moi. Je dois même dire que je travaille très fort pour l'apprécier et y trouver d'autres qualités. La musique ne me parle pas et certains éléments vieillissent mal comme l'harmonica joué par un clavier qui est vraiment désagréable. J'adore la pochette en revanche. Je sais que c'est un album super important dans la discographie de Stevie Wonder et c'est pourquoi j'y reviens à l'occasion voir si je serais dans un meilleur mood où mon appréciation en serait améliorée.

One of my MANY favorite Stevie Wonder albums! I absolutely love every Stevie album from his 70s output. I think Golden Lady is my favorite from this album. I'd give this album a MILLION stars if I could!

In 1973, this must have been light-years ahead of its time. Really an amazing album. 5/5.

I do love Stevie Wonder’s early seventies synthesizer work! There are some marvelous moments on this album. It's funky and has a few important messages. It's a perfect time capsule of 1973 and mostly a great time.

I am familiar with most of these tracks from compilation albums from Stevie. It is well worth the time to experience an album as originally intended. Love it!!

Freaking finally! I've been waiting for this one. These songs are gorgeous, deep, and timeless. They help me celebrate the good times and help get me through the bad. Love it love it love it.

I’m not sure how I’ve managed to live my entire life never listening to an entire Stevie Wonder album, but that was the sad state of affairs until today. I absolutely love Innervisions. It’s soulful, sometimes jazzy style and fabulous synths were an instant love match. “Living For The City” was already one of my favorite Stevie songs. And I went in to this loving “Higher Ground,” “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing,” and “All In Love Is Fair.” So I already knew half the album. But the context the album provides elevates these great tracks further. So nice spending some quality time with Stevie Wonder. This album easily exceeded my high expectations.

Stevie Wonder is popular for a reason. Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing is great. Overall though wasn’t necessarily my cup of tea.

This is quality music. I had no clue higher ground was stevies song, I thought it was the RH Chili Peppers honestly. That song went brazy! Though i do think this is quality stuff I will say I was a little tuned out for the first half of this album. Not like it was bad but just wasn't catching me until higher ground. 2nd half was pretty good! I would probably like this more on another listen. 6/10

Visions and living in the city were the standout tracks for me

An album that gets better as you listen to it. Lots of great piano, guitar and bass throughout. Higher ground is definitely the high point with some earlier songs missing the mark

29th July 2022 Listened on our last day in Berrias! Went to a brocante in the morning in Saint Ambroix then came home and chilled before flying home. Funky, clean production and serious serious rhythm. Loved it.

Elevator music with 3 good tracks

I started out thinking this wasn't the Stevie Wonder I know and then Living for the City came on. I think it is my favourite Wonder number. Higher Ground is also legendary. A truly wonderful listen.

This is definitely the start of something special in Stevie's career - you can sense the creativity brimming over, and the pure musical proficiency he brings - wow.

Cool uses of ambient sound and spoken bits on several tracks. I didn't realize "Don't you worry bout a thing" was a Stevie track I thought Incognito did that themselves. Fantastic album.

Overall enjoyed this album. A few of the songs are snoozers for me and not my thing because they are on the slow side but when it picks up it is great music. Enjoyed Golden Lady, Higher Ground, and a few of the other classics here. I can listen to this cleaning, working, hanging out, etc.

I'm not a fan of the genre so the album is not to my taste. However, Stevie's voice is great, and some songs have really good lyrics and rhythms. I enjoyed the second half of the album better as it's a bit more soulful.

This is an album that is of the highest significance. Although less harmonious than the rest of the album, I credit Living for the City for helping me as a child to be sensitive that life was less fair for others than it was for me, and to realize how scary that must be. I think it is one of the most important songs of the 1970's. I personally have a very small collection of vinyls that I retain and this is one of them. All in Love is Fair is the lowest point for me, but it's still extremely good. Near perfect album.

Interesting to hear Stevie Wonder sing in so many different ways. Also interesting that I actually knew the songs from different versions of the songs I have heard growing up. Favourite is Higher Ground.

7/7/2022 - ALBUM #161 Today's Album: "Innervisions" by Stevie Wonder - This was a pretty fantastic introduction to Stevie Wonder from a generator perspective because it really feels like this record is Stevie transitioning into some of the songwriting and experimental techniques that would define his career. It feels much more like an intentional statement as an entire album than something like Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Although I had heard many of his hits and a fair amount of his most acclaimed record, Songs In The Key Of Life, I hadn’t really ever heard an entire project from him top to bottom, so this being such a cohesive work made it a treat to say the least. The opener, Too High is a really great start for this project, with solid funk grooves that contrast lyrics alluding to the tragedy of someone losing their life to overdose after getting “too high” too many times. The track Visions slows things down after this for a contemplative look at what Stevie invisions for the future look like and how they clash with the harsh reality of injustices today. This theme transfers over to the track Living For The City, where a man moves into the city with barely enough and ends up getting incarcerated by racist police for a crime he didn’t even know he was committing. The voice clips of the policemen and jailer putting this man away hit so hard on a first listen and really make you feel the inequality going on. This theme of Stevie putting these injustices and “innervisions” to song continues throughout the track list and I particularly like the closing track He’s Misstra Know-It-All because it tells the listener exactly who is to blame for all of this injustice: The fast talking business man that thinks he knows everything. It’s almost poetic the way Stevie describes these pieces of shit people that exist in mass in our world and cause so much suffering for others without any regard for it. Now in terms of the actual music on the record, I think there is quite a large array of different moods and styles that Stevie is weaving together here quite well. I like the track Golden Lady for its amazing synth/piano work and its expressive chorus. Higher Ground is a great track as well with a bubbly funk guitar, some interesting cymbal work, and an uplifting message. All In Love Is Fair is one of the shining ballads on the album and it does a good job of capturing the emotion felt in a tough romantic situation. It’s also one of the most passionate vocal performances from Stevie on this album and boy does he blow it out of the park There are moments where I felt that the instrumental pallet felt a bit flatter than what I would typically expect on a Stevie Wonder project, especially when compared to a lush project like SITKOL, but I think the songwriting on this album really makes up for where it lacks sonically. Overall, this is an album jam packed with flavor, personality, soul, and a healthy amount of experimentation. It may not be what I initially expected to get out of a Stevie Wonder album, but the more I listened to it, the more I embraced the thematic songwriting choices he went for. Give this one a listen if you can handle soulful funk grooves and punchy ballads. Highlights: Too High, Visions, Living for the City, Golden Lady, Higher Ground, All in Love is Fair, Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing, He’s Misstra Know-It-All Score: 8/10 A particularly introspective and experimental album from the great Stevie Wonder

I knew Stevie was funky but not this funky. The musicality and song writing is next level genius.

Mostly enjoyable. I can't really hate on Stevie; the man has some true classics and he's super talented, this is just a case where sometimes the songs don't quite work for me. Not a bad listen at all, I just didn't find it super compelling outside of a few very good tracks.

Innervisions was a wildly successful album for Wonder, regaled with widespread critical acclaim and and an Album of the Year award from the Grammy's. Listening, it's easy to understand why: Wonder is a master of soul and composition. He weaves beautiful songs of life and love and the complex landscape of America. Moreover, he's a fantastic multi-instrumentalist, which helps bring his vision to full fruition on his own terms. I only wish the production allowed Wonder's songs to have a bit more punch to them, as many come across as flat, which doesn't do the songs justice.

Terrific songs and a video that captures it time perfectly. So many highlights of his career on this album.

2, I see the appeal

I haven't heard too much music from Stevie Wonder but have definitely heard his name, however I didn't really expect the sound from the album. I envisioned that Innervisions would have more of a saxophone jazz sound rather than the piano style jazz it has. (I may be confusing Stevie with Bleeding Gums Murphy from The Simpsons 🤦‍♀️(please don't crucify me!!)) Overall a solid album that has the smooth/funky sounds of soul and jazz that has a way of seamlessly working serious themes without being too in your face. Best: All In Love Is Fair Worst: He's Misstra Know-It-All

Good Stevie Album. Higher Ground carries it

Mixing the wild playfulness of a crayola-wielding infant with cosmic level compositional chops and the oversized emotional sweep becoming of a generational figurehead, this is one of those rarest of things: a 70s masterpiece that doesn't have "I couldn't have happened without the 60s" written all over its face.

J'aurais voulu aimer plus cet album. La pochette est cool et Higher Ground est une bonne chanson qui groove pas mal. Je sais qu'on dit que les textes de l'album sont la force de cet album, mais la musique ne me parle pas. L'harmonica joué par un clavier est vraiment désagréable. La production est quand même bonne par contre, mais je crois qu'il y a d'autres albums de Stevie Wonder que j'aime plus dans leur ensemble. What is it about Stevie that something that could be boring is smooth instead? Too High done by a lesser hand would be a sleepy start. Instead, it is the smooth intro with a power lift (musically) in Living for the City. The lyrics and melodies blend in a great reminder of why it is called soul. Enjoyed.

Insane to think that at this point Stevie Wonder was 11 years into his recording career, but only 23 years old. This album is an amazing work from an amazing artist, what else can I say?

Stevie Wonder is a musical genius and this is a perfect album.

Some classics in here but I think my favorite was Living for the City. Still relevant today.

A little boring, honestly. Highlights: Visions, Higher Ground.

Other than his hits and "Songs in the Key of Life" I have no experience with Stevie Wonder. So, I recognize a couple songs on this record but I'm hearing the album tracks for the first time. The guitar and electric piano interplay on "Visions" was unanticipated and really enjoyable. Of course, "Living for the City" is a great song. Something I don't talk about enough in these review is album art. I really like the cover art for this record.

I love Stevie. I could listen to any of his music basically all day long. That said, this isn't my favorite of his albums and I'm not real sure why it's on the list (unless ALL of his albums are on the list). This one is more background music for me (except for Higher Ground, which is one of my all time favorites of his).

Stevie Wonder is just one of those musicians for me ... don't own a single album, know a pile of his music and it's almost like it has been just there always...so listening to some of these tracks, especially something like Living in the City and not sure why but hearing how relevant and strong that track is just shocked me. And Higher Ground is a classic.

Another perfectly produced album by Stevie! The songs are not as impactful as other releases, but the sound is really the selling point.

This is a great album. Social commentary, themed, imaginative, beautifully produced, suffused with craft. Hadn't listened all the way through before and was really happy I did.

Admittedly, I'm not Stevie's biggest fan. I mean I love his music and hearing his big singles is always fun, but on whole albums I tend to find his brand of smooth soul a little too... smooth. Or gentle, let's put it this way. That's why I prefer the tracks that has a little more edge, like Living for the City. But having said that, it's obviously a classic and I can only admire his work even if it's not the first thing I'll want to hear when I want some soul.

The album has a couple of high points (such as Higher Ground) and of course Wonder's voice is great. But still, it's not really convincing as a whole.

True to its title - some broader, more experimental compositions from Wonder that stray outside his usual comfort zone. Not all land successfully, but there’s enough energy here for a solid toe-tapping listen.

I'm glad to hear this as it expands my funk and R&B knowledge a bit more. As my first listen to Stevie Wonder, he does a great mix of mentioned genres along wonderful sax jazz and piano ballads. It's also very political with it's social issues in the first half, and I appreciate that. I'm not a fan of the cover art, which dates this release personally, but the music itself is anything but. It sounds amazing and is relevant with artists like Silk Sonic taking the torch for this sound.

Talking Book came up recently so let's see how Stevie's sound has progressed in the 3 weeks / 9 months since then... Ooh it's good news! There's nothing as iconic as Superstition but the schmaltz has pretty much gone, replaced by experimental funk. Example: a track called 'Golden Lady' seemed like a prime candidate for schmaltziness, but turned out to be an absolute banger. I love the infinite key changes. The lyrics in the chorus to Higher Ground are much easier to understand than the RHCP version, too. Good stuff. 3.5 / 4.
