Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Vocals and lyrics are nothing too special but beats and instrumentals are very interesting and/or fun! Highlights: "Sure Shot", "Keep It Together", "Sabrosa", "Bodhisattva Vow"
I’ll always appreciate the Beastie Boys. They’re a little too monotonous for me to really love them, but they at least are trying stuff here and having fun.
Too metal for me.
Better than Licensed to Ill, still not as good as Paul’s Boutique. I could not get through it all (I’ve heard it plenty before), so there’s that. I liked the punk track.
honestly the instrumentals are really quite good, danceable and interesting, but it's a hip-hop album, and i'm getting maaaybe 25% of the lyrics at most.
not my type of music, but a pretty good album either way. has a pretty cool groovy vibe. definitely unique
Peaks and troughs
Disappointing album. Not as stupid/fun as Licensed To Ill. Sabotage is the stand out track. 20 tracks is too many. Bunch of stuff could have been cut here. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
305/1001 Beastie Boys - Ill Communication Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❓ Throughout this process, I've been a bit indifferent towards the Beastie Boys and this is very much the same...
Sure Shot is a classic. nothing stuck out from the rest to me
Some interesting tracks in here but ultimately it's something I prefer in smaller doses than a full album. Ricky's Theme was a standout for me. A really beautiful interlude between the raucous vocal assault of some of the other tracks.
05/14 Not bad
Sure Shot - woah ho ho, tough little message ya got there
Confident album with a whirlwind of genres has my favorite beastie song Sabotage Not my cup of tea as an album but appreciate work
I don't really listen to hip-hop but I liked the songs. It's was music I could just play and be productive.
Not my type but not the worst
Maybe exams are just putting me in a bad mood but all these songs sounded the same
pretty good, never listened to much 1990s hip hop. i liked the instrumentals. occasionally found it dragged on a bit
Another hip hop artist for whom I really need subtitles. That said, this really grew on me throughout my listen. Enjoyed some of the groovier beats, especially the instrumental tracks. It went unexpected places. Sabotage is great. 7/10 Quite Likeable
Of obvious historical import - I remember when this came out, it was amazingly innovative. But on a listen after 20 years, I don’t think it really holds up. Eminem (for example) one ups them significantly. But there would never have been a Marshall Mathers without the Beastie Boys! 5 stars for impact on music. 3 stars for current listenability.
Not as groundbreaking as License to Ill, but nonetheless enjoyable
Semmosta jammailumuzaa, keikuttavaa räppiä. Ihan okei.
If only there was some way I could include the music video for Sabotage in the rating somehow This one was a lot more interesting than I thought, the surprising amount of instrumental tracks threw me for a loop. As always, variety is the spice of life and although I have no real problems with the beastie boys a lot of their hits sound exactly the same. Sabotage isn’t my favorite song or anything but it’s pretty solid and definitely the best track on this one. Compared to other hip hop, it’s definitely on the corny side, which isn’t objectively awful but it’s kinda weird at times. It lacks a lot of the impact that a lot of other 90s hip hop has. This one’s also just a little longer than I’d prefer, 20 tracks is a lot when the vocals get really repetitive after a while. I’m not a huge fan of how it sounds like all the vocals are being routed through megaphones Definitely not bad, but compared to all the other 90s hip hop we’ve got (genre I’m starting to realize I really enjoy) it’s just not that special
Sabotage is an iconic song, but I can't really say the rest was. Interesting how some songs leaned more punk, some more hip-hop, but nothing really grabbed me and Sabotage isn't good enough to elevate this album too high.
I only really like this album for Sabotage. As in, I would be giving this album a 2 if it wasn't for the fact that Sabotage is on this album. That's about all I can say, the music was sometimes interesting, but not that interesting.
I don't mind a Beastie Boys song or two in small doses but man having to listen to an entire album by them is like looking up at Mt. Everest from the base camp knowing you have to climb it in nothing but socks. It's a huge task getting through everything, and it becomes stale real fast. You can only apply so much vocoder on your voice before it becomes annoying to listen to for an hour. You get the first few songs on this thing that are pretty good, and I really enjoyed the punk song & the one with the Q-TIp feature, but after that this really all does just become boring and generic. How can you have 8 years to grow as an artist and your sound is exactly the same just with some better production? What were you doing for 8 years? The only fresh or interesting stuff on here really was the punk additions, which were quite good if I'm honest. In the end, as average as this album is, there are a few solid songs. But overall it's nothing special.
Sounds like they made a bunch of noise and threw it at the wall to see what would stick. Definitely some bright spots, but the Beastie Boys have never been my thing, and this was not an enjoyable listen as a whole
Not my fave
Very nostalgic
Hehehh. You have to be in the right mood, but I was kinda in it.
Decent album. Favourite songs sabotage, bodhisattva vow and sobrosa. 6.5/10
Good biking music for my commute. Appreciated the instrumental tracks for breaks.
Good times, good vibes, it's the beastie boys !
it just reminded me of that scene in the office “Scranton! What? The electric city!” but it was the entire album
Great!
Favorite songs: Sure Shot, Root Down, Sabotage, Sabrosa, Eugene’s Lament, Flute Loop, Ricky’s Theme
Mixtape vibe is a solid change up from how the rest of the albums have felt so far! Too much washing over but hard to deny the influence of this band.
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? 🤔 Would buy on Vinyl? 🤔
Used some Buddhists’ elements, that’s really fun. But on average, not a memorable album.3.5/5
These guys are so weird and so fun/ny. Really liked it!
First few songs I liked, many instrumental filler songs
Gets kinda noise near the end, I've already heard a few of the songs and I kinda only liked the popular ones the rest were just alright.
The first miss on this long journey. It just isn’t for me. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I won’t be revisiting this album any time soon.
Very strong.
It definitely showcases the range of the Beastie Boys that not everybody recognizes or experiences, but it is a little long
I liked the funky parts far more than the rocky tones
I like the instrumentals best
It’s not my thing, but I can appreciate why this is highly rated. There is a LOT going on with this….falls into the category of music I can respect, but I don’t enjoy. 3
This album is super weird. Instrumentals make up the better half of the album that just loop constantly, and then just go into another instrumental. The actual tracks themselves are great, but there's just so few that are just sequenced in the funkiest order. It's an odd direction for the Beastie Boys to go, and during my listen I was completely confused and just wanted to turn on Paul's Boutique.
Sabatoge
Mention spéciale pour Get it Together et Sabrosa
Incredibly creative work here, buuuutttt… OK, so I like my music to have understandable vocals. Not here. I can handle rap and metal, but there has to be more to it. I can’t figure out if I like this or not. Some songs are awesome (Root Down and Sabotage), while others leave me wanting something more. 3 stars
To be cringe is to be free. ...this album never ends
Holder seg helt greit, men alt for varierende kvalitet i utgangspunktet.
Sadly couldn’t listen on Spotify. Only copy was a very spotty you tube version
I liked most of it. There sound is fun and catchy. 3.5/5 if I could.
Far less stupid than the last BB album I was given on here, Licensed to Ill (still a little stupidity sprinkled in though), and far more interesting to listen to in terms of beats. Sabotage is absolute gold. Could have done with a little less fluff.
Not my kind of music. Neutral review. Listened to the first 6 songs only.
okay i get the beastie boys hype a little more now. pretty dang good and definitely a memorable ending with that bodhisattva vow chanting lol. i like root down, alright hear this, and do it, though.

It's alright.
It’s not as bad as I thought, but it wasn’t good. The highlights were probably: Sabotage, Get it Together, and Transitions. It’s not that bad, but 20 songs is just too many for a Beastie Boys album. Overall, I’d give it a 3/5!
Old school rap. Not the worst. Bearable but not my jam
I think Biz Markie should be on every album,
B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak
Really disappointed. Expected so much from this, and the stand out singles are fantastic, but the other songs are just filler. Not the best unfortunately.
Kinda wish the whole thing was instrumental.
Chaotic, in your face record that lacks some of the focus of later work but has oogles of charisma to make up for it
not bad, but not my thing
DOn't love this album, but ended up listening to Beastie Boys the rest of the day. Brings back very fond memories of middle school and Mitch.
I'm not a fan of rap but I am a fan of rock so I'm not sure how much I like this album. The rock part is spectacular and a couple of the songs, like root down and sure shot stood out, reminds me of Rage against The Machine. Not my kind of music, but I can completely see how for its genre, this album is awesome.
Best tracks: Sure Shot; Root Down; Sabotage*****; Get It Together (Q-Tip!); Sabrosa (instrumental); Futterman's Rule (instrumental); Flute Loop (instrumental); Ricky's Theme (instrumental).
Prob a 3.5 for me. Enjoyable but meandering in the back half.
Suffers the same problem as many other early hip hop albums. It's just talking (or in the Beasties' case, shouting), all in the same style, over a generic beat. There's no variation, there's no flair. Also it has a bunch of instrumental interludes, which are pointless. The albums starts out with Sure Shot, which I've always loved. B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak is actually pretty decent, as well as Root Down. And then Sabotage lights it up, always loved that one as well. That's when the album starts to drag on. I'm sure the rest of the tracks are just as good as B-Boys... and Root Down, but its just more of the same stuff, so it feels like it drags on. I really want to give this a higher score, because the Beastie Boys have some killer songs. Unfortunately, only two of those are on this album. That's enough to raise my score from a 2 to a 3, but not more than that. Best song: Sabotage
stadig silly - stadig godt 2.9
I'm sticking my dick in the mashed potatoes
I don't think Ill Communication quite reach the same heights as Beastie Boys' first two albums, but it is a solidly sampled and well-produced album worth a spin now and then.
I like the energy, but it gets monotonous at times
never listened to anything like this. surely must have a cult following as an album because i think it is incredibly unique and interesting. not what i would choose to listen to but it feels honest and i can imagine a lot of people feel represented by this album.
Morre variety in the sampled music. And the BB were more musical themselves and not just rapping.
Also in my permanent collection. Some great tunes on here, but it's very long and gets a bit wearing.
The Beastie Boys are a bit of a marmite band for me. Sometimes, I really love their stuff and can listen to it for days. Then at other times I just get bored with it so very, very quickly. This album is definitely one of their better ones, but only scores a three out of five from me.
Not horrible, but some of the songs are pretty repetitive.
This is definitely a Beastie Boys album.
Whilst I'm absolutely a fan of the genre blends on this album, there's something not quite landing with me. The mix of aggressive indie/rock, hip hop and rap is so interesting and makes for a great listen overall. But too many of the tracks felt like they didn't quite fit and especially on the back half of the album I found myself drifting away from it a bit.
Fun album. More "hip hop" than Paul's Boutique. The standouts are definitely Sabotage and Sure Shot. I remember listening to those when I was a kid in the 90s and it was just the definition of cool.
I’ve heard of them before and heard a few songs before however not really my sort of music and not something I would listen to again although I can appreciate that it’s different and not necessarily bad
Some really good stuff. Sabotage is an all-time classic. Very weird instrumental at times.
Some great groovy songs, and some hard songs that aren't really my jam. A couple that are right in the middle.
A lot going on on this album. All the sounds were generally good, but was kind of hard to really nail down some cohesion.
Grungy, distorted and experimental feeling. I think they were really pushing their creative chops with the style change ups. Sure shot, Get it together, and Flute Loop we're stand outs for that Beastie Boy sound, but I liked Sabrosa and Ricky's Theme for the difference they added to the album.
Aight
pretty cool! a little long
eh, it was fine. didn't catch my attention so it became bg noise. 3 stars i guess.
I was having a while of a time through to Sabotage, then experienced dwindling returns and had to cut my losses during "Heart Attack Man".
I don't know what to make of this group. They have good songs, and it was nice how this album had a jazzy vibe to it. Yet, I don't feel compelled to give it anything higher than a 3.
This has always been an album I feel like I should like more than I do like. It's in my collection, a gift from a friend who thought I'd love it. And Paul's Boutique is one I love. But this album never quite landed for me. It's good, I give them props, I like the bringing back their punk roots and melding it all together. But yet it still just lands a 3 and barely that. I wish I could express better why it doesn't make the grade.
This was a fun listen on a Friday morning but not something I’m likely to play again.
The Beastie Boys really were in a world of their own making. One thing about this album that resonated with me was after a song would, I never knew where the next one was headed. It really kept me on my toes even if I didn't dig every song.
I've never really vibed with Beastie Boys, and the first half of this album did nothing to convince me otherwise (beyond reminding me that Sabotage is a bop). From Sabrosa onwards, however, it's a totally different beast. The instrumentals are the best thing here which I think says a lot. Would have been 2* based on first half alone, but the back end elevated it slightly.
Another classic I’ve never got around to fully listening to. It’s loud, weird, in your face, and unapologetic. First half reads as what the Beastie Boys were known for in my opinion, by the time Sabotage ends the album takes a turn into the artsy and weird. A whirlwind of noises and melodies that keep you on edge.
This was definitely longer than it needed to be
This was an interesting album. I enjoyed the more instrumental song such as flute loop
First few tracks decent enough, but lost a bit of interest, particularly the last 5-6!
I kind of wrote this band off based on Licensed to Ill, but this album is much more rounded and ... surprising. Some Beck vibes, overall not terrible!
Mixed feelings had some good and bad ones. I like “Sure shot”
(3.5)
They tried a little too much with this one. Goes from fun to meh
I get that the Beastie Boys founded the genre of white people party rap. But like a decent amount of music white people co-opted, it's just kind of okay. This album is ultimately forgettable, and I'm not sure I'd ever revisit this. I didn't hate it by any means, I just didn't like it.
You sometimes forget that the Beastie Boys were a punk band, and then bam, punk songs. Some solid songs, but I think it suffered for it's 60 minute length.
I've never really connected with the Beasties. This is probably the first time I've listened to one of their albums all the way through since the early 90s. I liked the jazzier tunes, tho.
When I first heard the Beastie Boys back in the 80s, I really didn’t like them. Partly for the embarrassment of white people rapping, partly for the absurd adoption of VW badges as a fashion accessory but mostly because of the way they used the word party as a verb. It wasn’t until sometime in the 90s that I heard this album and went back to give the meticulously crafted Paul’s Boutique a chance. This album is less sample heavy, and the rapping is still a bit cringeworthy in places (Why do they have to SHOUT, at the end of every LINE?), but the music is pretty good, all things considered. Sabotage is a certified banger helped by the excellent music video directed by Spike Jonze. A solid 3 stars, and I think I may well give some of their later albums a chance too.
Great album had elements of punk, hip hop and rap. It was enjoyable and I love how the album was put together. It was the perfect blend of songs so everything flowed well!
Not my usual fare but I like these guys. They don't take themselves too seriously and seem to be having fun with it.
The opening song is strong, sure shot. It reminds me of slim shady. I like the song sabotage.
favs: sabotage, get it together, the update, heart attack man
Timeless instrumentals on here, just grimy beats you wont hear anymore. Also you couldn't get an album cover more fitting for the music on here.
Hard not to love this album and the beastie boys in general.
the highs on this album are high but I also think there's some filler that drags on. but it has sabotage so that counts for something
I rate this album like a 7.5. I enjoys the beats and all. Overall all it kinda gave me like skater vibe but I sometimes catch myself vibing it it soo that why I gave it a 7.5, its was ratier 7 or 8 soo.
cool, but not really my style
Listened
Already liked a few from the album, didn’t realise how many songs was on it though
Beastly beastie! Love the blends of jazz! Great album!
This was fire. There were a couple of songs I could've done without but overall it was great
Solid
Started off so strong, felt like I didn’t enjoy as much of the second half of the album Fave tracks: sabotage, sure shot, and do it
I don't mind a Beastie Boys song or two in small doses but man having to listen to an entire album by them is like looking up at Mt. Everest from the base camp knowing you have to climb it in thongs and socks. It's a mammoth task getting through everything, and shit becomes stale REAL fast. You can only apply so much vocoder on your voice before it becomes annoying to listen to for an hour. You get the first few songs on this thing that are pretty good, and I really enjoyed the punk song & the one with the Q-TIp feature; but after that this really all does just become boring and generic - how can you have 8 years to grow as an artist and your sound is exactly the same just with some better production? What were you doing for 8 years? The only fresh or interesting stuff on here really was the punk additions - which were quite good if I'm honest. Shambala was a pretty cool song but the ancient scary voice just got annoying over time, which made Bodhisattva Vow pretty shit. Anyways, this was average as. Heaps of shit/generic songs on here but a few quiet gems. Beastie Boys are insanely overrated if you ask me.
I really didn't care for this, I guess you have to be a kid?
Es schockt und nervt gleichermaßen
White boy rap at its finest
those boys sure can beast
Enda mer punch enn det andre albumet her dvs. Licensens to ill.
turns out my dad was kind of onto something when he said the Beastie Boys are good. I don’t think i’ll revisit a lot of this (just not my preferred casual listening genre) but it is good. I didn’t realize how jam band-y the beastie boys could get but i can get behind it.
An ok listen
Overall rating by me: 6/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak", ,,The Update" Notes: The most punk of punk albums you could ever hear. I deducted point only because there were too many intros for my liking but overall I would listen to it again.
3: 1) Sabrosa 2) Flute Loop 3) Alright Hear This HM: Eugene's Lament
3 just a default rating now as it's getting hard to listen to the whole album sometimes when I'm playing subnautica
I like hip hop and the beastie boys. And haven’t heard this album. I can’t say that I would buy the album unless I found it for cheap but I’m glad I’ve heard it
More subdued and not as rocking as their debut, but good listening.
Little too much energy for me / need to be working out. Also it’s “ill” communication, not Roman numeral 3 communication. Oops
I'M TELLIN Y'ALL IT'S SABOTAGE. I've heard Sure Shot a lot in TV/movies. Definitely wasn't expecting some experimental violin(?) instrumental. Now Mongolian Throat singing?
By this album the boys had put away the silliness of License to Ill. Interesting to hear the different musical genres creeping in. I’m period of them for maturing musically, but I admit that the mix didn’t vibe with me all that well, and i don’t think I’ll be reaching for this album going forward.
Better than the other one.
Enjoy the jazz and funk bits most
Fun but heavy and samey at times
Sabotage is great. The rest wasn’t for me.
A couple classics on this album. Not what I expected honestly. This album had quite a mix of styles I wasn't used too. Overall, not bad. But as I've said before, the BB's aren't my kind of tea. White people rapping
A few fabulous songs and a lot of filler.
Wrote them off after Fight for the Right, so I never learned about their abilities as musicians - the tracks are great, if it was all instrumental only I'd give it a 5. Just can't get past their version of rap, maybe someday.
I appreciate it, but not my vibe
SABOTAGE! The instrumental interludes are vibey and a good break in the albums flow. Kinda music that makes you wanna stick it to the man. Lyrics are fun and sassy
Fun beastie boys album, Sure shot is a legendary track I'll never get old of it.
Favorite Track: Sure Shot
The album to me sounds like there a lot of production behind it which is obvious but nice, the songs also all seem to be bold and straightforward which I personally enjoy and of course the lyrics and bars are great. I have of course heard of the Beastie Boys but have never listened to them until now. Not to mention this is my first time participating in this, so it’s my first album recommendation from the book :)
Good. Nothing that spectacular
🙂↕️feels like the type of album to feel like riding in a lowrider with the windows down, your head nodding to the drums.
Again, I’m just not the biggest hip hop fan. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy this album though. I thought it was a fun time, and it had good vibes. I don’t see myself listening to this on a daily basis.
Okay OG Hip-Hop is see you... How did rock sneak into this, and on the second track?? Having "kick-it" as a recurring lyric is so '90s album coded. They really said we could just jam out for 4 minutes and call it, and name is like uhhh "Futterman's Rule?"
Fun beats
The beastie boys are an original rap group. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t an over the top enjoyment.
Great example of an album I'd never have listened to if not for this challenge. Can imagine myself at a 90s houseparty having a Kat Strafford dance moment to some of these tunes. Loved the unexpected instrumental songs too, although it got a bit long for me in the end.
Too much for me
Good but didnt blow my mind or something like that
Much more sophisticated than Licensed to III. Some great beats and much more interesting musically. Still some lemons though so 3*
A lot of good beats but not really my thing
This was alright. Obvious bangers: Sabotage and Sure Shot. Some of the songs I had to skip because they were annoying and repetitive (ie Heart Attack Man); I was also pleasantly surprised by the instrumentals that were nice grooves (ie Rick’s Groove).
5/10, não me aqueceu nem arrefeceu
3,1/5
The album have a really good groove, some remimds me of funk music. But at some point it get very repetitive, and i got tired of listining. Yet it is consistent, so a 3 stars.
This made me feel like the 90s Sure Shot and I'm turning my cap around, grabbing a skateboard and letting loose with a spray can. Tough Guy we're taking a break for some headbanging. Then on to B-Boy cruising with the top down. Root Down and Sabotage showed my preference for rock over rap, even though Root Down feels like a better song. Kinda wanna use Sabrosa as a DnD backing track. Same with Ricky's Theme
The album gives me the feeling of being in a good era for rap, and at the same time it sounds like heavy rock. It’s not a 4, because I missed a broader canvas where the tracks complement each other or maybe even merge, I’m not sure.
I've never listened through a Beastie Boys album before, only really hearing the hits before, and I actually really enjoyed it! It was basically what I expected, but was still a fun listen and some classic hiphop tracks!
Jazzy and experimental. Cool direction for hip hop / rock. Some of the instrumentals were cool. Still too long.
Sabotage is one of the great 90s tunes, but the Beastie Boys do spend an inordinate amount of time sniffing their own farts on this album.
fire as fart. I have never locked in and cleaned so much as when i listened to this album. great first song -- made me dance. i loved alright hear this -- so groovy.
This is a time that I would give 3.5 if that was an option. Since it’s not, rounding down.
matches my vibe i love it
favorite songs: Get It Together and Flute Loop. creative sounds, i liked how it blended jazz, rock, and hip hop all into one cohesive album. 3.5 stars, not my taste 100% but i will give it another listen through sometime
Rating: 6/10 Favorites: -Sure Shot -B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak -Do It
I respect the Beastie Boys and do like a few of their songs, but I just can’t do a whole album. Are they talented? Absolutely. But it very much sounds like noise to me. I’m sorry—I feel like I should love this, and maybe upon another listen I’ll feel differently, but it’s just not for me. ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 rounded up.
A really varied hip hop album with elements of punk, funk and rock. They were now a long way from nicking VW badges.
3/5
3.5 the instrumentals were the best part.
Prefer this to the other, but don’t wanna have to hear it again.
Fave Root Down. Neat guitar and drum work. Glad I gave it a go
Wow good grief is this annoying. Nice beats obscured by intentionally distorted rapping. Like they engineered it to be played really loud in a car rollin around residential streets neighborhoods and have everyone roll their eyes and flip em the bird. Then the second half of the album they moved to "let's just have a good time" and made "throw it on at a party" jams - edit - listened to this a second time and I now understand it as party dance / hype music so deserves a better score than my initial "why is this so annoying" reaction
The B-Boys are back and they're still angry, they shout and they pound out the beats and on occasion they just straight-up rock out If you want more "HAGADAGA HAGADAGA WE'RE THE BEASTIE BOYS WE'RE THE BEASTIE BOYS, OHHHHH!!!" content then you're in luck, but when I reach 1994 I think I'd probably be a little tired of the same-old It's still their own unique Beastie style they've got going on and it sounds cool, even through a full hour of Beastie action, they still try to change things up enough so that it doesn't get too stale by the end
Pretty good and I liked the genre experimentation, though it was a bit filler-y at points
Whenever I've tried this album in the past, I've been left intrigued but rather disoriented by the experience on each occasion. There's a metric ton of stuff going on here; some of it works well for me, but some of it continues to leave me puzzled. The hip hop elements grow in palatability, quality and creativity as the album advances, but the opening sequence of tracks is rough on the ears and a bit of an ordeal to plough through. The hardcore punk elements feel a bit tacked on and unnecessary for me, but the tinges of funk and has jazz throughout the album work spectacularly well on occasion, particularly on "Futterman's Rule" and when interlaced with tracks that are primarily hip hop in style, ensuring there's at least something I can latch onto. It's a difficult album to navigate and stomach in one sitting - I probably will return down the line to see if I can eke more out of it, but I'm doubtful it will ever fully win me over.
So far the first song of the album has always been my fav
it's interesting
A vibe, but overall okay.
some sick stuff but so much filler
An ok album
Production goes absolutely silly. Maybe their best overall vibe of an album.
Pretty good
Great multi genre upbeat album.
super
I like this a little more than license to ill. 7/10
Some cool samples, felt more aggressive than Paul's Boutique. Shoutout "Root Down" off NBA2k9, specifically when playing blacktop.
3.5. Pretty solid.
Sabotage is such a banger. The whole second half of the album is so different, but in a good way Fav songs: Sabotage, Eugene’s Lament, Futterman’s rule
Very nice, don’t eat the mashed potatoes
good
I like this more than the previous albums from them. sure shot, sabotage, and get it together were very good, it would have benefited from some trimming in my opinion.
Liked 3 songs, but a lot I didn’t like… but those 3 songs were great!
3.5 Stars
Had it on in the background, but there's something grating about Beastie Boys that never really clicked with me.
Just cause I like it doesn't mean it's great. It's a good album, but nothing life changing.
Sabotage is a classic! This album is Beastie Boys picking up their stride, but I think they went on to make much better bangers
Dense, funky, in-your face. Continuing the Beastie's development into a musically more complex vehicle. Having said this, I found it difficult to listen to as an album through headphones as it feels like they're hammering the words direct into your skull. There's too much reverb and distortion on the samples and vocals and the beats have been compressed into brad nails. i tried it again on the hi-fi and it wasn't much better. taken a track at a time in a shuffled playlist there are some killer tracks but 1 at a time is plenty
Alright
A lot stranger than I had imagined. I don't usually enjoy flutes, so props for that.
Obviously some absolute bangers, but also a whole lot of filler. Lyrics often a bit ropey as well.
Much prefer to yesterday's album, although track 2 'tough guy' was a bit much for 9am pre-coffee.
I want to give this 3.5, would have been a 4 if they'd limited the lo-fi / mic distortion sound a little..... Groundbreaking album spanning three genres, supported at the time by amazing videos and visuals (Sabotage remains a classic). The tour that followed this was a 10 out of 5 with 4 sets across 3 stages - Mixmaster Mike DJ set, Hip-Hop set, Punk set and Lounge Band instrumentals. Loads of bands and albums are still influenced by Ill Communication.
Far better than their other album I listened to on this list
Sure Shot // Sabotage // Ricky’s Theme //
Pretty good album overall. A tad too long, but I enjoyed it.
Solid Beastie Boys. Not my favourite album of theirs but ok.
Very consistent, but doesn't contain my favorite Beastie Boys songs
The Beastie Boys are very nostalgic for me which might give this a higher rating than it would otherwise. While some songs hit hard others I would rather skip and I think that has more to do with nostalgia than the genre or the songs themselves.
Having known a bunch of the hits, my first full BB album was Paul's Boutique. I didn't care for it. This is a significant improvement, containing at least a couple of bangers. I appreciate the variety on offer and it sounds great, but as you would expect for a 20 song album, it begins to drag and grate. There's an awful lot of fluff in the middle, there is no need for there to be so many instrumentals, and the whole toddler having a high pitched tantrum vocals feel repetitive sooner rather than later. Cut this to twelve tracks and I'd be happy to give a four star score.
1. Sure Shot - 7 Solid hip hop track with a brilliant flow and beat. Excellent opening track. 2. Tough Guy - N/A Too short to be rated. 3. B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak - 8 Love the chorus on this track and the effects on the voice on them. Quintessential hop hop. 4. Bobo On The Corner - N/A Is like an interlude. 5. Root Down - 3 Bit too repetitive and not really a track that goes anywhere. The bass is enjoyable but lyrically is extremely weak. 6. Sabotage - 11 An all time classic. The mix of the heavy rock with hip hop sound is outstanding and executed flawlessly on this track. 7. Get It Together (feat. Q-Tip) - 8 Solid song. Q-Tip being cued in and his rap is particularly enjoyable but the verses are really enjoyable as well. The background instruments are brilliant. 8. Sabrosa - 5 Decent instrumental track with a good beat and some brilliant bongos on it. 9. The Update - 6 The piano interjecting is very good as is the bass on the track but the effect on the vocals is too strong and it detracts from the lyrics and overall enjoyment of the song 10. Futterman's Rule - 6 Decent instrumental with some great guitar and drumming sounds. 11. Alright Hear This - 5 Brilliant intro but the actual main part of the track is a bit of a pass over song. It's just not as strong as what else is on the album. 12. Eugene's Lament - 2 Not a good instrumental track. 13. Flute Loop - 6 Nice short rap with some really good scratching. 14. Do It (feat. Biz Markie) - 6 Another decent rap with a good beat. Biz Markie doesn't make as big or huge an impression as the track featuring Q-Tip, but it's still solid. 15. Ricky's Theme - 7 Very good and chill instrumental track. Belongs on any lo-fi playlist. 16. Heat Attack Man - 1 Awful sounding track. Like a punk track more than anything else. 17. The Scoop - 6 Decent rap. The bass is really the star of the track here. The effects on the vocals are a little too much here again. 18. Shambala - 6 Good instrumental that builds well and transitions brilliantly into the next track. 19. Bodhisattva Vow - 6 Pretty much the same issue as The Scoop although I feel like the song doesn't start with the effects on it as much. 20. Transitions - 6 Very funky track with some great sounds on it. Decent way to end the album. Average Rating: 5.83 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 2.92 Rounded Up: 3 Stars
Half pints of raspberries on sale for a buck 88 so you might as well buy a couple. Some of these songs feel like raspberry seeds stuck in your teeth. The back half is like sweet seed free relief.
Will add sabotage and get it together to my list for sure. The instrumentals are banging too!
"They had a lot of variation of style in this and drew from lots of genres which is interesting. I can get and somehow also can't believe that ""Sabotage"" carried this album. Even the instrumentals were really good but I wasn't expecting long , lyric-less songs. "
Considerably more mature than the other, but still has plenty of laddish moments. Leaned more into the MC thing, which was fun. Had some adult instrumentation in some stuff (Ricky’s Theme) which was a neat little surprise. Overall better than the last. Maybe less fun, but significantly more mature.
Solid album, Beastie Boys have always been innovators when it comes to their sampling.
Never listened to them before, solid enough album, sure shot is a banger, sabotage hugely out of place but a top song of course
Belongs on the list. A fun, original record. I think I have to rate on the sprawl rather than the hits though. It's obvious they had so many ideas and couldn't hold back. I don't know what I would have left of but this doesn't hold for an hour. Editing to 40 could have warranted 4 but it's a three for me.
Definitely like the hip hop and funk leaning songs more than the rock leaning ones. Pretty fun, I see why they were the frat band of the time.
Do they sound like a human being when they rap as opposed to a member of the muppets? MCA - yes. AdRock- no. Mike D - maybe. This album is 20 songs?!?!??? “Shiiiit. If this gonna be that kinda party I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes!” Classic. Ok but do they have to always sound like they’re rapping through a bullhorn? “Sabotage” is amazing. Takes me back to watching the video a thousand times in high school because MTV practically had it on a loop. But AdRock, man:…..this dude’s voice is so annoying. I can manage it for a song or two but an hour him is asking a lot. THREE STARS
Pretty fire and like catchy and stuff i like Q tip too
True 90s shit, fr.
Beats were groovier than I expected, didn't age that bad
You can't, and you won't, and you don't stop.
Right on! The very much underappreciated Beastie Boys. Great stuff, 3.5 stars! BB's were at their creative peak and huge nationwide in 1994. They were at their loosest and coolest when they were jamming on the instruments and noodling around. The opening sounds of the dog and the flute are classic 90's, takes me back to a carefree broke-ass time, and sets the stage for the record. "Sure Shot" (63M listens) has a certain undeniable energy, a great way to kick things off. Then you jump to "Root Down" (23M listens) which is pure coolness. Finally, "Sabotage" (500M listens), which gets the listener amped up (and the video is still the greatest of all time). Throw in glue tracks like "Get It Together" (31M) with Q-Tip, "Sabrosa" (15M, funky stuff!), "Futterman's Rule", & "Flute Loop" (35M) and you a weirdly cohesive record. There are some throw away tracks for sure ("Heart Attack Man", "Tough Guy", "Eugene's Lament", "Ricky's Theme") but it's a view inside the band as they grew into musicians not just rappers/entertainers. You got punk songs, hip hop tracks, high energy, a dash of weirdness, a few great instrumentals, all this makes for a solid disc and a trip down memory lane! 3.5 stars, not 4 (due to the throwaway tracks).
Lots of variety on this album. Strong start but fizzles out down the stretch IMO. I wish they had more funky/groovy jams like Bobo & Futterman’s Rule. High 3
I was happy to see this one on the list and it was good but doesn’t really stand the test of time for me.
Listened to this a ton when it came out. Never throw it on any more. A few jams but some real cringy moments
I think if it was just sabotage 11 times it’s be 5 stars. I liked how weird they got compared to their original sound but can’t say I can remember any other songs.
My brother and I shared a room for the first 18 years of my life and he's a major Beasties head. I was absolutely tortured with their music for many of those years. Hearing this today, it isn't too bad. I dig the two hardcore songs. It could definitely be trimmed down a tad.
Some good vibes and the hits are bangers. Overall, feels like a lot of the same over and over.
Okay. Good.
Sabotage probably one of the best songs that year, great clip as well...couldn't get enough of it...Opener with sure shot very good but after midway the standard droooooops a bit for me..album could have been way better if shorter and 1 or 2 extra iconic tracks...
Sabotage!
Really good, both quality and quantity are present here. Bonus points for the Mongolian throat singing.
Love reliving it!
I can appreciate that this was less abrasive as the previous album. Obviously familiar with Sabotage. Liked some of the filler stuff in between, but lets be honest, I will still never gravitate to Beastie Boys on my own time.
Was this level of mic distortion en vogue in 1994? I found the first few tracks difficult to enjoy because of this. Lyrics were impossible to hear. I actually recognized “Sabotage” but didn’t attribute it to Beastie Boys in my mind. “Sabrosa” was a cool instrumental interlude I wasn’t expecting from BB. The strings in “Eugene’s Lament” really surprised me. Other standouts for me were “Root Down”, “Get it Together”, “Do It”, and the real treat at the end (if for nothing more than uniqueness), “Shambala” & “Bodhisattva Vow”. Overall this was significantly more diverse than I was anticipating. Great listening.
3.2
Good album definitely different with more instrumentals than i expected
It's a nice trip into a fusion of like 5 or 6 different genres. More jazzy and punk than hip hop at certain points, it feel cohesive as an album nonetheless. Some bangers, especially "Sabotage", and some funny and memorable moments throughout. That being said, it did not stick with me (with the focus on 'me'). I feel like I should like it more, but I don't, and honestly do not feel the desire to listen to it in the near future. It is not a bad record, by any means, just not one I'm particularly fond of.
Would be 2 stars but sabotage bumps it up
Some decent early hip hop moments and RATM style vocals but quite a long album with many other styles.
Classic Beastie Boys sound, but it’s nowhere near as innovative as Paul’s Boutique or as fun as License to Ill.
I much preferred "Licensed to Ill". I just couldn't get into this album in the same way.
Not a big rap fan. This album was okay. It was interesting to hear how they incorporated all the different musical styles into their songs. The instrumental tracks were cool.
No juu, tääkin on tällasta mid tier taustamusaa.
Kivan letkeesti albumi jolkotti raidasta yski raitaan kaksikymmentä.
Understand its cultural value. Not my favorite genre.
Not for me but I get it
Pretty good, sabotage is a killer track. The song with q-tip is awesome. The rest is a little bit f-ill communication
I remember buying this in high school - because 'Sabotage,' obviously, and being utterly baffled. And disappointed, honestly. It was just... way weirder than I expected. Especially since Paul's Boutique was (and remains) such a classic. This is way more eclectic and experimental, and as such not all of it works. Particularly when you're like 15 and want everything to hit as hard as the single. This is the first time I've listened to this in full in probably 25 years or so. Funnily enough, I have a similar take to teenage me. Basically, this moves Into sound collage mode after the Q-Tip feature, which is the last stand out track to me. That's a shame, because I like the interstitial instrumentals breaking up the proper tracks in the beginning, but the later songs just don't hit like Root Down or Sabotage. If this were an EP, easy 5 stars. Since it's an hour long... eh. At least all the good stuff is front loaded.
Fun mix of punk and rap. Sabotage is great. Started to feel like songs were all too similar towards the end of the album.
6 albums today? Serves me right for taking vacation. I can even progress to today’s album (August 26th, 2025) if I’m really feeling bold. I have spent a legitimate 6 hours or so going through all these and giving my uninformed, lazy opinions on records I believe to be mostly terrible. Sam Cooke was a reprieve, although the story of his death has me contemplating whether or not it was another orchestrated hit on influential black nationalists by the US government, or if he really was just a bad dude. Both? This is a Beastie Boys review. Hope it drags me out of this. Sure Shot - Calgary Hitmen goal song in like 2008. It really shows that I only write this for me. Nobody else could possibly care about or get all of my dumb references. Hell, when I stupidly read these terrible reviews back, I barely understand what I’m trying to say. Tough Guy - Throw in a sick punk song. This fucking rips. B-Boys Making With the Freak Freak - This song will be listened to out of respect for completion, but this song title disqualifies it from positive critique in any way. I don’t make the rules. Oh wait, I do. Bobo on the Corner - Just a beat. Not a great one at that. Root Down - Quite repetitive, but this beat is far more fun. The lyrics range from fun to completely braindead, so that’s interesting. Sabotage - Classic alert. For those who would like to see how rap is best mixed with rock music, look no further than this track. Excellent energy. Get it Together - Q-Tip rules so aggressively. Well, he’s actually not all that aggressive, but he’s so good. Perfect feature do legitimize yourself and to ensure that you have a funky song. Sabrosa - Instrumental hip-hop. Not exactly my cup of tea in this case as it feels a little barren. The Update - This continues in the vein of many of the previous tracks. Heavy beats informed by 70’s exploitation films? Those scores? Right? Listen, I can reference Canadian major junior hockey from 2008, but good luck finding any knowledge of cultural touchstones here. Futterman’s Rule - Every time you pass the kosher deli on 7th, you have to skip twice and tip your cap. I don’t make the rules on this one. It’s that damn Futterman. Alright Hear This - No punctuation here. I’m not sure if they mean, “ok. Time to listen to this song” or “this song is mediocre - listen to it.” Both kind of fit. Eugene’s Lament - Yeah, this sounds like it would be enjoyed by a guy named Eugene. Hell, it’s enjoyed by me, and I’m a set of horn-rimmed spectacles away from Eugenizing. Flute Loop - Flute is such a great instrument. Works supremely well here. Continue to loop, gents. Do It - Biz Markie is here and he’s babbling over a bone-breaking beat. Lots o’ B’s in that sentence. Lots o’ B’s, hey? Yeah, uhh sounds like a night at the IN-LAWS. *uproarious studio laughter and applause* Ricky’s Theme - Ricky is apparently a very chill dude. Not the Ricky of Trailer Park Boys fame, I take it. Nobody want to admit they are nine cans of ravioli, but I did while I was waiting for this song to finish. Heart Attack Man - Yeah I think this may have something to do with the 9 cans of ravioli from the previous track. Live by the fork, die by the fork. Or is it live by the fork, laugh by the fork and love by the fork? One or the other. Another fantastic hardcore track? These guys just show off with these interludes. Perfect voices for this genre. The Scoop - Between the updates and scoops, we have to be fully apprised of the situation(s) by now, right? I am certainly feeling like I’ve heard enough! So many similar sounding hip-hop tracks. Shambala - Finally, some throat singing. Bodhisattva Vow - Typical famous people. Always embracing some eastern religion. What about good ol fashioned satanism? Is nobody a fundamental God hater anymore? What happened to those brave church burners? Transitions - This song is about those cool glasses that automatically turn to sunglasses. What a way to end the album. A religious turn and some flagrant product placement. Way to go guys. Really selling out your loyal fans. And by selling out, I of course mean providing a crucial service for! Do you find yourself squinting outside? Fumbling with that prescription singles case, Or worse, leaving behind one or both pairs of eyewear? “I can’t see anything now, I’m ruined.” Well that doesn’t have to be the case any longer, introducing, from the year 2003, Transitions! Now, look like a dork, in and out of the sun! “Hey guys, surf’s up?” “Oh god he’s wearing those glasses. Everybody buddy up and go back to the bus.” Transitions. It’s time to go outside! Uhh this album was good! A bit long in parts and a bit dull in others. But there was enough to keep me going here. Some really special hardcore tracks that I will revisit and some creative beats and performances. Excellent features as well made for some entertaining moments throughout. Keep it coming Beastie Boys, and figure out a new sponsor for next time. That Transitions spot will pay for my bus fare home tonight! Well, almost. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Sure Shot, Tough Guy, Sabotage, Get it Together, Do It, Heart Attack Man
This one feels long and not always memorable. Probably a step ahead in terms of composition and arrangement. But I prefer the dumb samples of ‘Licensed To Ill’ even though that’s probably the worse album. Fav tracks here were the first one and ‘Sabotage’. Wanted to give this 4 stars after watching the music video for Sabotage but I understand that’s not how this works.
I like the Beastie Boys in theory, but don't really want to listen to their music. Does that make any sense? This album was more enjoyable than the earlier Beastie Boys albums I've heard on this list - but I still think it's better in small doses.
