Can
3/5
Pretty tolerable up until that 17 minute noise track; that shit sucked. I was gonna give this a pretty high score before that, but it was pretty unlistenable afterwards. Peking O sounded like an auctioneer on coke who they pitched up a fuck ton in the studio, and while it did make for a pretty entertaining listening experience, wasn't a very good song.

4/5
Pretty strange, even for new wave. It was very good, but I don't know if I'd want to listen to these songs regularly. Dude's voice is kind of a lot to take in

Peter Gabriel
3/5
Solid but not really my thing, didn’t listen to all the live versions of the songs because fuck that 6/10

Sam Cooke
4/5
Fun listen. Also I’m not gonna rate out of 10 anymore, my feelings on albums change so much after I rate them and I feel like a rating out of 5 is generally more accurate in the long run

Nirvana
5/5
It's pretty crazy how good these guys sound even when they're going for a significantly more mellow sound than what they're known for. Not usually a fan of the live albums on here, but this is really good

If it weren't for the first few songs this would be an easy 10, like 8.5/10
Public Enemy
4/5
Pretty fun to listen to but it does kinda trail off. Probably could've been a little shorter. 7/10
Joni Mitchell
2/5
Dope voice and some great lyrics but her flow is kinda ass and I really did not enjoy listening to the songs. 4/10
Thin Lizzy
4/5
Pretty cool guitar stuff and way more entertaining than I thought it'd be. Still a little repetitive. 5.5/10
Red Hot Chili Peppers
1/5
I do not like this band and making me listen to them for over an hour made me very unhappy. 2/10
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
I'm not a huge fan of the whole punk/hard rock sound, but I liked the transition from super energetic to mellow and I was pretty into this one for most of the songs. 7/10
Sly & The Family Stone
2/5
Nothing bad but nothing really stood out to me. Wouldn’t revisit. 4.5/10
Beastie Boys
4/5
The shout rapping is pretty corny when it’s not executed well, which happens a few times on the album, but overall the energy in this is great and the production is outstanding which made it a lot of fun to hear. 7/10
Liz Phair
3/5
Holds up really well for a 30 year old album, and you can really hear the influence this has on a lot of indie today. 6.5/10
The Police
4/5
Didn’t expect the reggae vibe, but it actually worked pretty well and this was an overall enjoyable album. 7/10
Sheryl Crow

Garbage
4/5
A little derivative but overall just an enjoyable listen, 7.5/10
Soul II Soul
3/5
This is pretty interesting. The production is really good, and honestly id probably rate this album much higher if it were just instrumentals, but the singing is hot ass on pretty much every song. I dunno, maybe I just don’t like house music. 4/10 because the cover is dope
Stereolab
4/5
Oui oui baguette bonjour 8/10
Various Artists
4/5
Tough to rate because of nostalgia and it being the holiday season but the songs are good and Darlene goes hard
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Solid but not really my thing, didn’t listen to all the live versions of the songs because fuck that 6/10
George Harrison
5/5
This is long and for sure has some filler stuff that probably could’ve been cut, but overall this is really good. 9/10
Buffalo Springfield
3/5
I was a lil busy listening to this so I didn't give it my full attention, but it sounded nice. Maybe I'll listen again. 6.5/10
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
Just sounds like exactly what I’d expect from 60s pop I guess. Not great, not bad. 5.5/10
Hookworms
4/5
Nothing super crazy or special here, but I enjoyed listening 7.5/10
The Modern Lovers
3/5
There’s definitely some good and some bad on this album. I like the overall sound and most of the songs have a pretty cool vibe, but the song hospital illustrates everything I dislike about the album. Dude’s voice can be annoying as fuck at times, and he tries to do some weird, taylor swift like spoken word rap shit that just doesn’t work at all. Like a really shitty attempt to mimic Lou reed. However, the album is still kinda weirdly charming. I really don’t know how I feel about this. 5/10
R.E.M.
4/5
This was good 8/10
Ravi Shankar
3/5
This guy was fuckin it up on that sitar, but I’m not gonna rate it that high just because I don’t think it’s something I’d listen to again 6/10
Ella Fitzgerald
4/5
Didn’t listen to the full 3 hour thing but the best of was pretty great 8.5/10
1/5
Masterpiece. 1/10
Beastie Boys
3/5
This one is hard to rate for me. Fantastic production, some of the best I’ve heard in a while, but I really dislike the way the beastie boys rap- the weird shout rapping just doesn’t do it for me. It ruins some of the songs that could be great if the rapping was at least bearable. 6.5/10
Serge Gainsbourg
1/5
This is weird. It doesn’t sound that bad, but the thought of this old ass man trying to get with a middle schooler is pretty disgusting and kinda ruined the experience for me, even if it wasn’t a true story. 1/10
The The
3/5
I enjoyed this, most of the songs were enjoyable to listen to and pretty entertaining. 7.5/10
Paul Simon
3/5
Never been a huge fan of Simon or Garfunkel. Don’t hate their stuff, but never really got into it. This felt the same for me; nothing offensively bad, but nothing really blew me away. 5.5/10
Keith Jarrett
3/5
I feel like I can only focus on listening to something like this for so long before I just kinda start to get bored and tune it out. Still good though. 6.5/10
Rahul Dev Burman
1/5
Most of this wasn’t bad, however that second song “one two cha cha cha” was the closest I’ve been to just turning off one of these albums and not returning. That song was one of the most annoying things I’ve heard in a long time. Without that this is probably a 5 or 6, but that song makes it a 3/10
Iggy Pop
5/5
I really liked this. Great production, weird but catchy singing, upbeat and high energy. 9/10
Sufjan Stevens
5/5
This shit slapped. What was I thinking
Charles Mingus
5/5
This shit blew me away. There's not a single dull moment on this entire thing, which I really didn't expect going into a jazz album. Every instrument just feels like it plays its own role to perfection, and each time they busted out that guitar I nearly came. It also somehow felt like it just kept getting better as it went on. I think I need to listen to more jazz now. 10/10
Supertramp
4/5
This didn’t age super gracefully, but it is still good. 7/10
Sister Sledge
4/5
Thought this was gonna be one of those albums that’s only on here for that one huge song, but I was pleasantly surprised- this was great. I love some good disco. 8.5/10
The Stranglers
3/5
Not bad, but nothing too special. 5.5/10
Astor Piazzolla
4/5
This did get a little boring after some time, but it's still relatively pleasant music that's nice to listen to, so 7.5/10
Fun Lovin' Criminals
2/5
This had some fun stuff but it also had a fair amount of genuinely bad songs. Shit kinda sounds like if the red hot chili peppers had a baby with the beastie boys and that child grew up listening to Snoop Dogg. Overall this wasn't bad though; it would probably be 3 stars with no context, but I just feel like there are so many better alternative hip hop albums from the 90s through today that are both better and more influential than this. 4.5/10
Billy Joel
4/5
7.5/10
Tina Turner
2/5
Sounds super dated and her voice really doesn't do it for me. 4/10
Peter Gabriel
3/5
I was kinda gone listening to most of this, but I remember feeling pretty similarly to his other album. Pretty good. Here comes the flood is a great song, but I think it was overall a slightly weaker album than so. 5.5/10
Aerosmith
3/5
Just kinda boring, but not too bad. 5/10
Everything But The Girl
4/5
Weird but nice voice, pretty good album. 7.5/10
Scott Walker
3/5
Hard to understand without the context of Scott 1. 5.5/10
Fugazi
3/5
Not usually a fan of anything where the lead singer does a lot of screaming, but the instrumentals here were pretty dope and kinda saved this for me. Also pretty unique compared to the rest of these albums. 6/10
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Did not expect to like this, but it fucked. 8/10
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
Did not fuck 3.5/10
Pavement
4/5
Classic indie rock. Not a big fan of Stephen malkmus’s voice, but I’m still a little biased because of the influence this has had on the genre. 7/10
Sarah Vaughan
5/5
Not a bad song on this album (except maybe that last one). Also a great live album; really shows off her voice, a little bit of her personality, and makes you feel like you’re right there in the venue. 9.5/10
The Beach Boys
3/5
Similar feelings to that mamas and papas album. Old pop music just doesn't really do anything for me, and it's probably not something I'd listen to again, but it wasn't bad. 6/10
Lou Reed
4/5
Lou reed’s talk singing misses quite a bit, but there are some bangers on this album and the songs all have fantastic production. I don’t know how to rate it since a good number of the songs are ass but a few are incredible, 8/10 I guess
Tortoise
2/5
First song sounds like a 10 year old trying to make a daft punk song in garage band but they don’t know how to start a new song so they just keep piling on to one with all their new ideas
4.5/10
Common
4/5
Common isn’t the greatest rapper, but an album produced by j dilla and Kanye is gonna sound nice regardless. Really enjoyable and easy to listen to. 8/10
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Pretty fun album, nothing stood out to me too much other than come on Eileen though. 5.5/10
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
Not good enough to be an hour long
3.5/10
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
Aight, just kinda blends in with all the other old ass pop music. Not bad, not great. 6/10
The Black Keys
3/5
This entire album sounds like a truck commercial
5/10
Marvin Gaye
4/5
I wanna have sex with marvin gaye after listening to this, so 8/10
Björk
4/5
Bjork weird as fuck but still pretty good. Throat singing song was one of the strangest I’ve ever heard.
7/10
David Bowie
4/5
Iconic album, but didn't really blow me away. 7.5/10
Finley Quaye
3/5
Not bad, but pretty long and nothing really stood out. I’m sure they could’ve found a better reggae album than this for the list.
5/10
LCD Soundsystem
5/5
Nostalgic, energetic, good indie pop. Parts sound like MGMT. Really enjoyed it
9/10
Arcade Fire
4/5
These songs all kinda sound like the same song, so it loses some points for that. That one song is pretty good though
8.5/10
Can
3/10
SAULT
3/5
Some good songs, some not good songs, but overall an enjoyable listen. Liked the weird trip hop shit they did on monsters, almost sounded like a Portishead song. Wasn't really paying attention to the lyrical content, which I'm sure was a selling point of the album, so can't really speak on that. 7/10
The Who
3/5
Pretty solid as far as old rock, but I don't understand why this list has so many live albums that just don't need to be here.
6.5/10
ZZ Top
3/5
also solid
6.5/10
Weather Report
2/5
Probably the most elevator music sounding album I’ve ever heard. Fine, just not a very entertaining listen. 4.5/10
Stan Getz
5/5
Every song just sounds so nice
9.5/10
Songhoy Blues
4/5
Damn, this was really good. None of the songs were bad, and there were a few standouts that I really enjoyed. Obviously have never heard of these guys before this list, so I'm glad they made it
8/10
George Jones
4/5
Old country is usually good, this is just that. Doesn’t seem to do anything too different or original, but sounds pleasant
7/10
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
Classic
9.5/10
Elton John
4/5
Very pleasantly surprised by that first song, and otherwise a pretty good album
8/10
Janis Joplin
3/5
Pretty good
6.5/10
Cocteau Twins
5/5
Shoegaze bible
10/10
Elis Regina
4/5
Not at all what I expected, but pretty good
7/10
Beatles
5/5
Nothing I can say that hasn’t been said
The Triffids
2/5
So average. Nothing stood out, no songs I'd want to revisit, but also not necessarily awful sounding. Just a boring album.
3/10
The Stone Roses
5/5
Feels like I've been handing out a lot of fives recently, but this album was great. Never been a huge fan of this kind of mellow old British rock, but something about this album had me vibing the whole time. Good mix of different stuff, and a bunch of great songs.
10/10
Kraftwerk
3/5
Super interesting stuff. Enjoyed the first listen but I don’t know if there are any songs I’d come back to. Pretty crazy that it came out in the 70s
6.5/10
Arcade Fire
3/5
This feels a little more generic and bland than the last arcade fire album, but it's still a generally enjoyable listen.
6/10
Pink Floyd
2/5
I typically like experimental stuff. This album does the experiment part well, but unfortunately just doesn’t sound good.
4/10
Dennis Wilson
2/5
Fine, but repetitive and boring
4/10
The Kinks
4/5
Pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Lots of catchy and well made songs
8.5/10
Beyoncé
3/5
I was expecting a little more going into this since I'd heard a few of the songs and liked them, but the album had a lot of bad/ok songs with just a few standouts.
6/10
Air
4/5
Really good
9.5/10
Mariah Carey
2/5
Generic and bland and pretty boring
3/10
Rush
3/5
I can definitely see the appeal here. This is one of the albums that’s really tough to rate for me, because I think it’s objectively good music, but isn’t something I’m super into.
6/10
The Libertines
3/5
Eh
5/10
k.d. lang
3/5
Not my favorite, but enjoyable and easy to listen to
6.5/10
The Isley Brothers
5/5
Every song just makes you happy. Dude on the guitar shredded. So enjoyable
9.5/10
The Byrds
4/5
Enjoyable album, although a little boring at times. Mr. Tambourine man is a banger though. I have listened to that song probably like 15 times today
8/10
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
First song was good. The rest were not. I don’t like this trend of albums putting their best song at the start; I know it made sense back in the day, but I hate the idea that when I’m listening to an album it probably won’t get better than the very first song.
4.5/10
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Thought I'd dislike it, but I didn't. Hope it gets added back to spotify soon so I can listen some more.
7.5/10
Beach House
5/5
I’m a beach house enjoyer. None of their music does anything too crazy and it all sounds pretty similar, but I like how calming and pleasant their sound is.
9/10
The Flaming Lips
2/5
Bleh
Justin Timberlake
1/5
Justin Timberlake is one of my least favorite artists of all time. He’s one of like 2 people on Spotify that I have the “don’t play this artist” turned on for. Why he has an album on this list is fucking beyond me; yeah he’s famous, but there are so many better r&b/pop albums from the 2000s to today. Honestly, I’d rather listen to just about any album than this. Plus, it was like an hour long. Also, what's going on on the album cover? Where is he? The moon?
1.5/10
Elliott Smith
5/5
This was crazy to get since I put an Elliott smith song on the music league like two days ago. He’s great, and this is a great album.
9.5/10
The White Stripes
4/5
I was locked in on super auto pets listening to this, but I think it was pretty good.
8/10
The Yardbirds
3/5
Fine, but nothing here was super memorable outside of the album cover which is pretty cool. Is it wrong to rate an album higher for its cover? I don’t think so.
6/10
Buck Owens
3/5
Solid, pretty fun listen
6/10
Eminem
2/5
The original corny white dude. Not a bad rapper, but edgy for the sake of being edgy; misogynistic, homophobic, etc., so kinda hard to listen to.
3/10
Big Star
3/5
Not the biggest fan of this, but I don’t really know why. The music is fine I guess, maybe it’s just the lead singer’s voice
5/10
Goldie
2/5
HOW DOES IT JUST KEEP GOING? WHY WON'T IT END? WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER NEED TO LISTEN TO 2 FUCKING HOURS OF DRUM AND BASS WHY WHY WHY
3/10
Metallica
2/5
Never really been into metal, thought that maybe this album would change that seeing as Metallica is one of the most acclaimed and famous bands of all time. There was some cool stuff, but I didn’t really enjoy listening to it
4/10
The Kinks
4/5
I think I’m becoming a Kinks fan. Also, this is one of those times again where I feel like this album is probably not as “good” as yesterday’s, but I still prefer this one. I’m a sucker for this kind of chilled out jangly sound. This is super close to a 5 for me.
8/10
Simple Minds
3/5
Sounds super 80s, but not necessarily in a bad way. Solid, but there’s a lot out there that’s very similar but also just better
6/10
The Streets
1/5
Part of me wants to give this a 10/10 because it’s hilarious. But also I’m pissed that out of all the hip hop albums that could’ve been chosen this somehow made it. HOW? This album is easily the least deserving of a spot of all the ones we’ve had so far. At least it was entertaining.
Super easy 1/10, actually sounds like a middle schooler made it.
CHIC
4/5
I'm a sucker for disco. I love the energy
7/10
Dire Straits
4/5
Good album, enjoyable the whole way through, but maybe a little boring
7/10
R.E.M.
4/5
I really liked this. The back half especially was super solid, and the last few songs were bangers. I just don’t think I can give this a 5 because the first half of the album wasn’t my favorite
8/10
The Clash
5/5
This album is super famous, and for good reason. Just a great album the whole way through, and I love the cover. Super fitting
9/10
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
5/5
maybe my favorite album on the list thus far
MGMT
4/5
I really want to give this a 5 because I think mgmt is great, but I feel like outside of the 3 or 4 standout songs the rest of the album is pretty weak.
8/10, but super close to 9
Joy Division
5/5
We’re really on a hell of a run right now. Another fantastic album (with another fantastic cover), just sounds so cool with the bass and the weirdly distant vocals
10/10
Jethro Tull
3/5
The songs were fine and I really liked the flute, but I guess I’m not a huge fan of prog rock. I think the songs just get kinda boring after a while
6/10
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Not as good as rumors (duh) but still has some bangers. Sara and tusk are classics. Good album
8/10
Tim Buckley
2/5
Eh
4/10
Thelonious Monk
4/5
I think I’m just a sucker for this type of stuff. I love hearing all the instruments working together, and I love the solos. Some great drumming on here too
8/10
Pink Floyd
4/5
Once again, prog rock doesn’t really do much for me, but this is still a great album.
8/10
Björk
4/5
alt bitch sent me a Spotify playlist bitch I’m from the hood do I look like I listen to bjonk
Eels
2/5
This seems like something I’d normally enjoy. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood, but really not a huge fan of this
4/10
Peter Gabriel
3/5
I feel the exact same way about Peter Gabriel as I did after listening to his other two albums. I can see the appeal, but this is not for me. Don’t think this one’s as good as So, but it’s definitely better than the other one. Giving it a lower score than both because I’m tired of getting Peter Gabriel albums
5/10
3/5
Not super into this, nothing about it really stood out to me. It does kinda rock at times though
6/10
Talking Heads
4/5
Definitely pretty strange, but at least it was an interesting listen with a few really good songs.
8/10
Tracy Chapman
3/5
Idk, maybe just not really for me. A few huge songs that I knew were pretty good, but even those bored me a little. Nothing besides fast car really stands out, just solid songwriting and decent music. Also max beat me on the review yesterday. Can’t let it happen again.
6/10
The Byrds
4/5
The Byrds go... country? I guess? Why did they do this? I enjoyed the sound on their last album, but I guess this one's good too. I just don't really get the pivot.
7/10
Dagmar Krause
2/5
I hate war now
3/10
The Cars
4/5
I had fun listening to this; I don’t know how many of these songs I actually want to listen to again, but I enjoyed the album
7/10
Sex Pistols
3/5
Really not a huge fan of shouting as a form of singing but despite that there are some good moments on this
5/10
Germs
2/5
Fuck off album generator
3/10
Lupe Fiasco
4/5
Some good and some bad. Outro seemed unnecessary and was not a fun listen
7/10
Beck
3/5
I enjoyed this. Felt longer than 52 minutes because a lot of the songs sounded the exact same, but still pretty good
7/10
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Summary says the album is about how his son died, which obviously is very sad, but I couldn’t really get into the music. Weird voice
5/10
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Not the biggest fan of Bruce Springsteen but this is solid. Born to run alone gets this at least a 4
7/10
Iron Maiden
2/5
I guess I don't like metal very much. I do think this was a little better than the metallica album though
4/10
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
Pretty good
7/10
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
3/5
Eh
5/10
The Notorious B.I.G.
5/5
Biggie is one of the greatest rappers ever, and this is his best work. Essential east coast hip hop.
9/10
Iron Maiden
3/5
Fuck off album generator <- wrote that before I listened. Leaving it because why am I being made to listen to 2 Iron Maiden albums in less than a week. That being said, this album was actually fine; thought I'd hate it like I do most other metal stuff, but I guess it was a bit more melodic or laid back or something because I really didn't mind most of it
6/10

8/10
Megadeth
2/5
Alright I gotta rant a little. I’m getting sick of the metal pretty quickly - I think it’s mainly because it all feels the exact same to me. I’m probably only saying that because I lack knowledge of the genre and am biased against it not having listened to any metal growing up, but whatever. It’s just a bunch of dudes playing shit thats probably very technically difficult, but just doesn’t sound very good. If they’re so good at playing their instruments, why don’t they just make music that sounds good? And also, why call your band megadeth, is everyone in the band 13 years old? Do they think that sounds like a cool name? Grow up
3/10
Jean-Michel Jarre
3/5
Not the type of electronic/ambient that I'd usually listen to but still not bad
6/10
Adele
3/5
Did not know this album was on here. Obviously have heard a few of the songs, but none have ever really stuck out to me in the sea of generic corporate sounding pop music, and none stood out on this listen either. Reading that review back makes it seem like I hated this. I didn't, it's just kinda bland, especially for pop music
6/10
David Bowie
4/5
Was gonna comment on how similar this sounded to a talking heads album, but I guess eno helped produce it so that makes sense. I liked this more than the last Bowie album; the sound was a little strange overall but my issue with Bowie is typically that he just kinda bores me, and this was pretty entertaining.
7/10
Nick Drake
5/5
I grew up listening to a lot of nick drake because my dad loved him, so I’m a little biased here, but this album is great. I think this and pink moon shaped my music taste quite a bit. Also northern sky is such a great song.
9/10
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
I’ve always thought that the rest of take me out doesn’t do the intro bit justice, but it’s still a good song. The rest of the album is fine. Really like the premise behind cheating on you, but the song unfortunately is forgettable.
5/10
Nas
5/5
This is probably the greatest rap album ever made, and one of my personal favorites. Deserves all the praise it gets
10/10
Janelle Monáe
4/5
Had never really given any of Janelle Monae’s music a chance, but this was really good.
8/10
Nico
2/5
I guess people with German accents singing in English just doesn’t sound nice, because at its best this made me laugh and at its worst it sounded like tank battles
Sam Cooke
4/5
Fun listen. Also I’m not gonna rate out of 10 anymore, my feelings on albums change so much after I rate them and I feel like a rating out of 5 is generally more accurate in the long run
Pere Ubu
2/5
Talking heads if they had no idea how to make music? Not a big fan but points for creativity I guess
Kid Rock
1/5
Alright, two awful albums in a row. Funny how we went from illmatic to this- one of the worst rap albums ever- so quickly. It’s actually beyond me how this made the list. Just for max, my rating out of 10 on this one is a 0. Shit sucks.
Tears For Fears
4/5
One of those albums that just sounds super 80s, but it also works very well here. Bunch of really good songs, good album, and I really cannot decide whether to give this a 4 or a 5.
Orbital
3/5
Not bad, just got a little annoying to listen to after some time
The Everly Brothers
3/5
Another just kinda boring but not bad 60s pop album. They all kinda sound the same to me
Joanna Newsom
4/5
I had been meaning to listen to this, but not on Spotify, so I’d never gotten around to it. This was weird, and I’m not sure if I’d really want to go back to any of the songs, but I also thought it was pretty good. It felt like just the right amount of weird.
DJ Shadow
3/5
Never really been able to get into instrumental hip hop stuff. J dilla’s donuts is pretty good, but otherwise I just kinda find it boring. I tried to listen to this album a while back and didn’t really like it, this time around it was just whatever.
Jungle Brothers
3/5
This was alright. Not great, not bad.
808 State
3/5
Another just kinda boring electronica album that doesn’t really stand out to me at all and is so mediocre that it makes me mad
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
This is some shit that I think people are either gonna really like or really dislike, and I can totally understand hating this album. Corgan’s voice is ass and the album is long as fuck and a lot of the songs are weird, but I love it. The more mellow songs are definitely more my thing than the in your face stuff, but I honestly enjoyed the whole thing, which is crazy for something 2 hours long
LL Cool J
3/5
Honestly the most surprising part of this was that it came out in 1990. Other than that it was just fine; never been a huge fan of LL Cool J, but mama said knock you out went hard and the rest wasn't unlistenable.
UB40
4/5
This was a lot better than I was expecting after I saw "British reggae band" in the Wikipedia description. Pleasantly surprised, loved the relaxed sound and will definitely be listening to this some more
David Bowie
3/5
Another mid as hell performance from Bowie. The original across the universe performed by the Beatles is a pretty good song, but it sounds like ass on this album.
Radiohead
5/5
Peak virgin music
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Listened in car. Wasn’t paying much attention, but I think it was solid
Butthole Surfers
3/5
I had heard some bad things about this album, but I honestly thought it was fine. Maybe it’s because my expectations were so low going in and there was like one song that I thought was good, but I don’t think this album deserves its spot as one of the worst on the site
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Starting to like Neil young. This album wasn’t fantastic, but it has its moments
Tom Waits
3/5
Definitely unique. Really didn't like the first half, but didn't mind the second half. I can't tell if the songs grew on me or the album actually got better, but it wasn't terrible
The Shamen
2/5
This is pretty ass. Every time we get a bad electronica album, which there seem to be quite a few of on here, I get more and more upset that they didn't include discovery on this list
The Afghan Whigs
3/5
Eh
Beatles
4/5
When I generated this album, I remember being pretty excited to listen. Then immediately after I got super sick for like 5 days. It has been awful. Finally back though, and this was good. I feel similarly to abbey road; this might get a 5 from me if it weren’t the Beatles, but I just came in already expecting so much
Goldfrapp
4/5
I really liked it. Even the weird songs usually had something cool about them
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Honestly didn't mind this one as much as I thought I might. It didn't feel nearly as lifeless and boring as a lot of the similar stuff we've had recently, and some songs were actually quite fun
Eminem
1/5
Two old eminem albums in and I cannot understand people who defend him as an artist claiming his old stuff was good. Dido was far and away the best part of this album, and even Stan, which easily the best song, is way cornier than I remember. And the lyrics on every song are, of course, unbearable to listen to.
Throwing Muses
3/5
It's a shame this is so hard to find. There are some good parts on here, but some other not so good parts.
Scritti Politti
2/5
Aight this is ass. Don't get how this one made the list
Bert Jansch
4/5
I think I might've just been really in the mood for this, but I found it very enjoyable
The Police
3/5
Every breath you take is really good but the rest of the album is super mid
Pixies
5/5
Pretty good
Miles Davis
4/5
I like a good jazz album every once in a while and this was pretty good. Not my favorite, but I liked listening.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
I always thought these dudes just made boring shit for old people. This was kinda that, but it was good, and I liked it way more than I was expecting to
Nirvana
5/5
It's pretty crazy how good these guys sound even when they're going for a significantly more mellow sound than what they're known for. Not usually a fan of the live albums on here, but this is really good
The Dictators
3/5
Honestly pretty tolerable as far as punk goes. Probably not gonna return to any of this, but it fine to listen to once
Talk Talk
4/5
Pretty strange, even for new wave. It was very good, but I don't know if I'd want to listen to these songs regularly. Dude's voice is kind of a lot to take in
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Solid, not incredible. This was gonna be a 3 but the last song brought it up
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Really really good. Super close to giving it a 5 but I don’t know how many of these songs I’ll actually listen to frequently. Album was a great listen though
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
4/5
Albarn seems like kind of an annoying lil shit but I liked this
Parliament
4/5
This got me funked up
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
Definitely one of the most surprising albums we've had so far; hadn't ever heard of it and it ended up being great. Loved the mix of genres and sounds. Glad this is on the list
The Electric Prunes
3/5
mid
OutKast
5/5
OutKast is one of my favorite groups of all time in any genre. Pretty sad aquemini didn’t make this list, but I love stankonia and I’m glad it showed up even though I feel like it’s way more hit or miss than some of their other stuff.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Liked this a little more than the Aretha Franklin album from a week ago. Again, just a really good album
The Pogues
3/5
I was pretty confused when I saw that this was “folk punk”, but after listening I guess that actually makes sense. For what it is I guess it’s pretty good, but I’m not a huge fan
John Cale
3/5
Parts reminded me of simon and garfunkel, but a little goofier. Didn't like it that much, but not offensively bad
Public Enemy
3/5
One of the most respected and acclaimed hip hop albums of all time, but I just can't get into it. It's pretty similar to fear of a black planet, and while I liked that on the first listen, it just kinda grew more and more annoying as I continued to listen to it.
XTC
3/5
Usually like this kinda weird new wavey pop shit but I didn't think this was very good. I've tried may times to like XTC because they're always popping up in the related artists of groups I like but I never can
Slint
4/5
Uh yeah
Beck
4/5
Beck is a little boring but I do mostly enjoy the music
Metallica
2/5
Dumb stupid fucking 2+ hour metal album. At least the symphony makes it interesting because I don't know what I would've done if it was just 2+ hours of Metallica. Album was still dumb and still doesn't need to be on this list. Metallica can actually fuck off
Ms. Dynamite
4/5
This was rather enjoyable
Yes
3/5
Still find prog rock boring as hell. Nothing about this stood out to me
Jefferson Airplane
4/5
Pretty good
Laibach
3/5
Don't know how to rate this; it was bad, but at least it was pretty entertaining
Also that is a great cover for this album
The Byrds
4/5
Just another Byrds album. Why they have 5 albums on this list is beyond me, but the albums we’ve had have all been enjoyable listens so far
The Fall
4/5
Thought it was gonna suck. It was actually pretty good
The Doors
5/5
I had never given a full doors album a chance, and I don't know why. This was really good; probably the most I've liked an album from this list on a first listen
Marvin Gaye
3/5
More like midvin Gaye
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Significantly better than blue
Nick Drake
5/5
Another easy 5
Sabu
3/5
Sounds a lot like some of the stuff my mom would listen to when I was a kid. Not crazy about it though
Jack White
3/5
Pretty much exactly what I was expecting, which was just very mediocre.
3/5
This fucked. Maybe it was just great music to listen to while working because it's kinda just nice background noise, but I enjoyed it
Van Morrison
4/5
Very good. Almost a 5
Beatles
4/5
Not as unique or interesting as the other Beatles albums we’ve had but still a nice listen
Talking Heads
5/5
These guys might be onto something
Pink Floyd
4/5
Like I’ve said many times before, it doesn’t get much more boring than prog rock- but as far as prog goes Pink Floyd is actually pretty enjoyable. I liked this album
Ice T
3/5
Midnight and body count were pretty cool. Otherwise pretty similar sound to Public Enemy, which means mid
PJ Harvey
4/5
PJ Harvey is really good, and this album is really good. Between a 4 and a 5
Neu!
3/5
Some nice ambient stuff and then some less enjoyable weird stuff. Pretty good though
David Bowie
4/5
Probably the best Bowie album we've had, but I still don't get why he has so many albums on the list. He's consistently pretty good but never anything more than that
Christina Aguilera
1/5
Really boring and really bad. The closest I’ve come to just not finishing one of these albums so far
Elvis Presley
4/5
Definitely understand the appeal here. Really enjoyed listening to the full album, don’t know how much I’ll want to go back to individual songs
Depeche Mode
4/5
I like 80s synthpop stuff so I thought this was pretty good but if I'm gonna listen to Depeche Mode I'd rather just listen to violator
5/5
Bowie finally delivering an album that doesn't make me want to fall asleep. This was great
3/5
Mid
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Kinda made me feel like a pirate. Not really sure if I like it or not
The xx
3/5
Pretty disappointing; I expected a lot since it's a post 2000 album and one that I'd heard good things about, but none of the songs really stood out and the whole album just kinda blended together into one mediocre indie song. The intro also sounded like the background music for a car commercial.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
So in love is a great song. The album’s kinda boring but everything sounded pretty good
3/5
I know Vardaan’s gonna like the length of this one
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Definitely better than the divorce album. Maybe not one of the greatest albums of all time for me, but still really good
Van Morrison
3/5
Van Morrison is lowkey way hornier than Marvin Gaye. I feel like he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for this
Machito
2/5
Maybe just my mood but I was not feeling it. Just sounds like background music for a pixar movie
Ryan Adams
3/5
Boring and long but not offensively bad
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
Did not know how hard this went
System Of A Down
2/5
Metal bad. At least this was a little different
Venom
2/5
Metal still bad
The Cure
4/5
I guess this was my reward for getting through 2 metal albums
American Music Club
3/5
Totally unrelated but should've given deja vu a 5. That album slaps
Metallica
2/5
I guess I’m just gonna go my whole life without ever understanding why people like this
Solange
3/5
Fine
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
This album is shorter than the song I submitted to music league this week
Portishead
4/5
I love dummy but I had never listened to this whole album. Pretty good
GZA
4/5
This was really good
Herbie Hancock
4/5
Pretty good
Skunk Anansie
3/5
This was interesting. I’m probably gonna forget about it in a week
Sinead O'Connor
4/5
I remember eating in Schatz once when this version of nothing compares to you came on. That was funny as fuck
Air
4/5
The fist song slapped, and the rest was pretty good for a mostly instrumental movie score
Crosby, Stills & Nash
5/5
This was really good. Not as good as Deja vu though. Still can’t believe I didn’t give that a 5.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Some solid country
50 Cent
4/5
Many men and in the club slap, the rest was fine
Willie Nelson
4/5
I love this album but I feel like I can’t give it a 5 because they’re all covers
Radiohead
5/5
Not even a top 3 Radiohead album
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
I fw it
Little Simz
3/5
Pretty good
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
I had no idea this album was so good. The only real criticism I have is that its a little long and most of the songs feel very similar
SZA
4/5
I’m not the biggest rnb fan but sza is always fun to listen to
Grizzly Bear
3/5
This was really all over the place. Some good, some boring. I still don’t know if I like it or not
Funkadelic
4/5
This was really good. Sucks that it’s not on Spotify
AC/DC
2/5
I mean acdc is kinda fun to listen to, but doesn’t do much for me beyond that
Mudhoney
5/5
I guess I just like grunge, which doesn’t make any sense to me since it feels pretty close to metal which I can’t stand. Idk. This was good
Dr. John
2/5
Sorry old man but I’m not feeling it
Norah Jones
4/5
A few really good songs and a bunch of solid ones
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
3/5
Solid
Muddy Waters
3/5
This was alright
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
Knew a few of the songs, and I did really like those, but most of the album was pretty unremarkable
Boards of Canada
2/5
There isn’t really anything wrong with it, it’s just boring as hell
Arctic Monkeys
4/5
Really fun listen, by far the best arctic monkeys stuff I’ve heard. Probably gonna regret not giving it a 5
Fairport Convention
5/5
I think it was pretty good. Idk. Wasn’t listening that closely
Led Zeppelin
3/5
It’s fine but I expected a lot more from one of the highest rated albums on the site
Turbonegro
3/5
Not usually into this sort of stuff but this really wasn't that bad
Van Halen
2/5
Wow! This rocks!
Steely Dan
3/5
Sorry Jojah. Steely Dan is boring. I’ll give this a 3 for production and a few good tracks towards the start
Motörhead
3/5
Simply too much Motörhead. Some of the guitar was cool though
Björk
4/5
Bjonk
The The
3/5
A couple good songs. The rest was pretty boring
The Black Crowes
2/5
Boring, uninspired, unoriginal, and forgettable rock radio fodder. Just a less interesting version of blues rock that came 20 years before it. I hate this type of shit but it’s not actually bad enough to give it a 1
The Specials
3/5
I guess it’s fine, I just don’t really like reggae that much
Silver Jews
2/5
Feels a lot like pavement. As with other slacker rock, I’m a big fan of the general vibe, but I really could do without the style of signing on this. Right between a 3 and a 4
Fiona Apple
5/5
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CkEHikn17eU
Fugees
4/5
This is almost a 5. I feel like all the songs were great, but not gonna give it a 5 because none of them really stuck with me
The Cult
3/5
Mid
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
A couple huge hits but otherwise pretty underwhelming. Time after time is great, but the rest doesn’t come close to that
Eagles
3/5
Boring country rock
Boston
3/5
Boring arena rock
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
I was expecting more
B.B. King
3/5
It was fine
Bad Company
3/5
Feels like I’ve been giving out a lot of threes, but I also feel like we’ve been getting a lot of very mediocre hard rock
Gotan Project
3/5
Fine I guess. A little annoying while I was trying to work though
Pixies
5/5
Pixies is one of the bands I didn’t realize I liked before I started 1001. This and bossanova were both really good. This was better though
Elton John
4/5
Tiny dancer goated the rest was fine
Destiny's Child
2/5
Can’t help but feel like I’m not really part of the target audience here
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Apparently paint it black is only on the US version and I listened to the uk version. With that this is a low 4, but it’s a 3 without
The Killers
4/5
Ngl I did not want to like this but it was actually pretty good. New guilty pleasure I guess
New York Dolls
3/5
More mediocre hard rock. Between a 2 and 3, going 3 because it wasn’t offensive
Todd Rundgren
4/5
I really liked it. Lots of different stuff, kept me engaged the whole time, a few great songs.
The Who
3/5
This was fine I guess. I do not love the who
N.W.A.
4/5
Made me feel cool
Frank Black
3/5
A little too similar sounding for how long it was
2Pac
4/5
Production made this album feel long and a bit stale after some time but you can tell why people think 2pac is the greatest rapper ever. He sounded great
Adele
3/5
Feel pretty much the same about this as I did about the last Adele album. I can see the appeal, the songs are good, she’s talented, I didn’t mind listening, but it’s not really my thing
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
This sounded hella dated and I didn’t really enjoy it
Bee Gees
3/5
Not at all what I was expecting from a Bee Gees album but it was fine I guess
PJ Harvey
5/5
This went hard
Soundgarden
3/5
Was expecting this to be better than it was
Bill Callahan
3/5
Kinda boring. Don’t really care about it
Heaven 17
2/5
Wasn’t expecting a lot when I saw scritti politti in their related artists. It was still bad
The Zombies
4/5
All these 60s pop albums sound the same. Still good though
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
It was fine I guess. Sounded like shitty Radiohead at times
The Soft Boys
3/5
It was aight
The Birthday Party
1/5
Borderline unlistenable
Black Sabbath
3/5
Don’t care
Queen
3/5
Queen is a little overrated to me. I’d still rather listen to them than most other pop rock bands from their era though, and this album was fine
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
Got annoying real quick
Oasis
4/5
Pretty much what I’d expect from oasis. Nothing groundbreaking, but the music was good
John Lennon
4/5
Jawn Lennon
The Prodigy
4/5
Pretty fun album
Soft Machine
3/5
Very early and very pretentious prog? Not a huge fan. Some of the jazzier parts were nice though
Harry Nilsson
3/5
Meh. Kinda boring
The Stooges
5/5
Couldn't tell you why but I really liked this
Talking Heads
5/5
She talk on my head til I 77
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Doesn’t make any sense that this came out in 67. Also, 3 5s in a row
Carole King
5/5
Everybody loves this album but that’s because it’s a fucking great album. One of the easiest 5s so far
Can
3/5
Better than tago mago I guess, but not much worth noting outside of that. It did actually sound pretty nice at times
Bad Brains
3/5
Some real DC shit. Unfortunately I don’t care for hardcore but I’ll give it a 3 because it wasn’t bad
David Bowie
2/5
Maybe I wasn’t able to fully appreciate this because I was doing homework, but this was pretty wack
Femi Kuti
3/5
Worked while listening, so kinda tuned out. Fine I guess. Probably would’ve been bored if listening more intently because it is pretty long and kinda samey
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
Just not good unfortunately
David Bowie
5/5
As far as Bowie goes this was really good. Maybe my favorite Bowie yet. Great album
Syd Barrett
3/5
mid and weird
The Slits
3/5
It was fine I suppose. Parts of it felt like they were trying to capture the same vibe that the stuff the b52s were making at around the same time captured, but didn’t do it nearly as well. Fine album, will never listen again
The Stooges
4/5
I fw the stooges I wanna be your dog is a banger
Elvis Costello
2/5
He's so painfully mediocre and has so many albums on this list that just don't deserve to be here I just do not get it
Hole
4/5
It was really good. Idk if it was 5 good, but I really enjoyed it
Hugh Masekela
4/5
It was pretty good, just long
Ramones
4/5
It was pretty good. Definitely not much variety, but the songs were fun to listen to
The Undertones
3/5
It was aight
The 13th Floor Elevators
2/5
Songs just sounded bad. These guys were trying way too hard to make something unique and it flopped
Spiritualized
3/5
It sounded pretty cool but none of the individual songs were that memorable so idk how much I’ll want to return to it
The War On Drugs
4/5
Not usually into this upbeat Americana folk stuff but this was actually pretty good. Enjoyed most of it
Cat Stevens
4/5
Good album. Gonna have to relisten because I wasn't paying enough attention
Leonard Cohen
5/5
Feel like I usually know going into an album whether or not there's a chance I'll give it a 5. I was not familiar with Leonard Cohen's game. The album wasn't particularly exciting or groundbreaking, but there were just so many really nice sounding songs on here. Really liked it
The Pretty Things
3/5
It’s just so mediocre. This dude doesn’t need to include every single 60s psych rock album that exists on this list. This really doesn’t need to be here
Meat Loaf
3/5
it was fine
Sonic Youth
4/5
Sonic youth has recently become one of my favorite bands. This is one of the few albums of theirs that I haven’t listened to. After listening I can say that it’s definitely less accessible and a bit more noisy than a lot of their other good stuff, but it still fucks
Jane's Addiction
3/5
A bit too heavy for me to really get into it, but I think I almost liked it
Santana
3/5
It was aight. I think I was expecting more
Radiohead
5/5
A personal favorite. Really great as an album experience, and lots of great individual songs. Motion picture soundtrack and itioteque by themselves would get this album a 5
Pixies
4/5
Not quite as good as the other two pixies albums but still solid
Kings of Leon
3/5
It was pretty enjoyable to listen to. Right between a 3 and 4 for me, gonna give it a 3 because I have a feeling I'll like it less the more I listen. And also it's a little annoying at times
U2
2/5
Not too sure what an “achtung baby” is and this album didn’t explain it very well. Also I didn’t really like the music. Mid album + confusion = 3/5
Japan
3/5
More mediocre new wave stuff
Coldplay
4/5
Never realized how huge Coldplay was. This album was solid, like a less exciting Radiohead
Kraftwerk
2/5
Guess these guys got some cool points for finding out about synths before everyone else? Still doesn’t make the music good. Do like the album cover tho
The Verve
3/5
It was fine, just got a bit boring. Sounded way too Americana for a britpop band which was a little confusing
Suede
3/5
Fine. Mostly boring, couple good songs
Kings of Leon
2/5
Been putting this off because I didn't want to listen to it. My thoughts on the album itself aren't too crazy; it was fine. Pretty similar to the last Kings of Leon album we got, but a little more poppy, which leads me to the main point of the review.
I was talking to Alex earlier and he was explaining how little he liked the Sonic Youth album, which honestly was understandable; I was really into it, but can see how someone might not be willing to sit through all the screeching and shouting for the few moments of really good stuff (which is kinda how I see their music, obviously some might just think it's shit). To me, even though that album was pretty abrasive, I liked that it was unlike any other album we've heard and is totally different from anything you might hear in the mainstream, while still being (to me) a pleasant listen (I liked the songs). My point is just that I think I definitely skew towards trying to give points for things that I like while also doing something unexpected or different, and I'm more into stuff like that than this album, which is objectively fine. I think my reaction to a first listen of this wasn't that much more negative than Sister - it's just that this is super reminiscent of a lot of other pop rock you'll hear on the radio.
I feel like kind of a dickhead after writing this. Obviously people are gonna like stuff that's somewhat unique. I guess between this and music league I'm just trying to rationalize how someone can genuinely love something that someone else genuinely hates. If anyone's read this far and has any good theories please lmk. Maybe this will get covered in a philosophy class I take in the future.
That being said I do not think these guys deserve more than one album on this list, especially since this was just a more formulaic version of the other album. For that reason I'm rating it lower even though it was probably a more enjoyable listen.
R.E.M.
4/5
My dad really likes REM, but he never played any of their earlier stuff. This might be the best REM stuff I've heard though. Really liked it
Gram Parsons
3/5
I've found that I tend to like country a lot more as a full album than I do when an individual song pops up while listening to a playlist. As an album this was probably a 4, but I'm gonna give it a 3 because I don't think I'll listen much in the future
Van Morrison
3/5
Feel like Van Morrison doesn't really deserve as many albums as he has on this list with how similar all his stuff sounds, but I don't really care because they're always pleasant listens. This was solid.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
More Rolling Stones. More mid
The Who
2/5
Jojah reacted on airbuds while I was listening to this, so if you're reading this Jojah, I'm sorry. I just don't get The Who. I was bored listening to this. It was boring.
Spiritualized
4/5
Like it. Much better than the other spiritualized album
ABBA
3/5
Had pretty high expectations but this ended up being pretty mediocre. Nothing was really bad, but not much stuck out besides slipping through my fingers
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Still a big fan of Dusty Springfield's singing. This album is mostly covers and doesn't really do anything crazy, but like the last album, it's a generally pleasant listen
Scissor Sisters
3/5
It was fine. There was some enjoyable stuff. I’d just never listen to this over any older disco, didn’t really do anything for me
M.I.A.
3/5
Some pretty crazy and interesting stuff on here. 20 dollar sounded like bladee at times and was just a pixies song at times. I don’t think there are any songs I really liked other than paper planes, but paper planes is such a great song
Morrissey
4/5
The smiths, but worse. I love the smiths, so I still thought this was pretty good, despite a few questionable lyrics and the fact that morrisey is not a great dude
Kanye West
5/5
This might be the only time that Rick Ross shows up on 1001, so I just wanna say that his performance on devil in a new dress is actually one of the best rap verses ever. At the very least, it’s his best. Lost in the world is maybe my favorite hip hop (if you can even call it that) song ever. Runaway might be objectively the best hip hop song ever. This album does everything right, from the creativity to the production to the features to Kanye’s crazy performances on like every song. This might just be the greatest hip hop album ever; even my mom likes it. It just sucks that I can’t really listen because of who Kanye is now.
Orbital
3/5
I actually did like parts of this. There was some pretty cool stuff. Not much I’d ever want to revisit, but a fun listen
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
It was good. Feel like Springsteen just doesn’t take enough risks for me to really get into it. It all kinda sounds the same
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
My mom used to always listen to this, so I feel like I like it a lot because of the nostalgia
Terence Trent D'Arby
2/5
Just didn’t really do anything for me
Cheap Trick
3/5
The music was honestly decent as far as hard rock goes. Just don’t understand why this needed to be a live album
Calexico
3/5
Started out fine, got a bit boring and repetitive
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Liked it more than other Rolling Stones albums we’ve had. Wild horses doesn’t feel like a song I should like, but I’ve always loved it. That song bumps the album up to a 4
The Prodigy
3/5
Me when my generation is jilted
The Flying Burrito Brothers
3/5
More decent country that I probably wont listen to again
Michael Jackson
4/5
All time great pop album, lots of classic songs, no real complaints
The Beach Boys
3/5
Still think they’re a little overrated. Album was fine, but it’s just hard to take the music seriously when they sound so goofy
Queen
3/5
Still don’t care about queen
Echo And The Bunnymen
4/5
Lot better than what I was expecting given how much i disliked the last echo and the bunnymen album. Also echo and the bunnymen is a stupid name
Deep Purple
3/5
Better than I expected
The Beta Band
3/5
More early 2000s pretentious indie stuff. First half was pretty bland, second half was a little less bland but still didn’t do much for me
Willie Nelson
5/5
Willie Nelson was the first artist that made me realize I didn’t dislike country. This is a great album
Ray Charles
4/5
Pretty long and not too much variety, but consistently solid. Pretty enjoyable listen
Peter Frampton
4/5
Kinda generic but I did really like a few of the songs. The rest was meh
Foo Fighters
4/5
I guess that long review I wrote a while back was actually all bullshit. This album isn’t groundbreaking or genre defining, but I liked the songs
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
The verses were pretty uncreative, and the production was a bit too creative - I think that led to a pretty dated feel. It’s even worse when you consider that albums like illmatic and ready to die were coming out of the same places at around the same time as this album. This album doesn’t come close to either of those. Comparisons aside though, the album was fine. I didn’t love it, but I wasn’t bored while listening which is worth something I guess
Frank Zappa
4/5
Responding to Iniyaa’s review on the last album, yea I read the reviews, and I also put off albums that are on this list. This was one of the albums I’d been putting off, since I’d heard a lot about frank zappa and never really had any idea who he was. After listening I think he deserves all the hype he gets from music snobs. This was good
Kelela
4/5
It was quite good
Beatles
4/5
Similar to other Beatles albums. Liked it a lot, really high 4
Nirvana
5/5
Nirvana is another one of those bands where there’s not a whole lot I can say that hasn’t been said. Great album
Arrested Development
3/5
Dated and forgettable
Genesis
2/5
This is exactly what I’m talking about when I say prog is dumb and stupid and boring. This is just the same dogshit song for an hour and a half and there’s probably some chump out there that thinks it’s the greatest thing ever created simply because the songs are long and it sounds goofy. At least Pink Floyd has good songs. This is ass
The Go-Betweens
3/5
It’s alright
Khaled
3/5
It was fine
The B-52's
5/5
There’s a moon in the sky called the moon is the greatest song title of all time
Guns N' Roses
4/5
I’ll set the music snob shithead part of my personality aside here and concede that this was a fun album
Bee Gees
2/5
Sounds like a boring amalgamation of every Beatles album we've had thus far. Not sure why this list loves the Bee Gees early stuff so much; seems to me like they were ripping people off both early and late in their careers, but at least their disco stuff is fun to listen to
Gorillaz
3/5
Not nearly as good as I was expecting. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood
Sonic Youth
5/5
I'm a big Sonic Youth fan. This album is one of their best. I feel like they're definitely divisive, and can see how some might find this grating and hard to listen to. In my opinion though, these guys were able to perfectly merge elements of punk, alt rock, and indie to make music that to me is super engaging and unique. Yeah, a couple of the tracks are just noise and aren't even really listenable as songs, and I'm not going to pretend that it's some super deep art form that some people just don't get - at the end of that day those tracks suck - but the rest is so strong. A few all time favorite songs of mine are on this album. Also the cover is great
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
Just not very good. Definitely prefer sex pistols to this
Scott Walker
3/5
Hard to understand without the context of Scott 3
The Replacements
4/5
A little too punk for me at times but mostly liked it
John Martyn
2/5
Couldn’t stand his voice
The Clash
4/5
Not as good as London Calling but still fun to listen to. I like the clash a lot more than most other punk stuff I guess
Slipknot
1/5
Stuff like this is just so silly to me
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
About an hour longer than it needed to be
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
4/5
Lowkey kinda good at times. Liked it
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Still don’t really know how to feel about Joni Mitchell. I like the vibe most of the time, but when I pay attention the songs don’t really work
Teenage Fanclub
4/5
Coming across an album that’s right up my alley that I’ve never heard of before doesn’t happen that much anymore. Loved this album, thank you list
Michael Jackson
4/5
A couple hits and some other fun stuff. Good album
Steely Dan
4/5
Yeah still not crazy about steely dan but this album was good
The Icarus Line
2/5
Like worse 80s/90s noise rock mixed with worse 90s/00s alt/garage rock. This doesn’t need to be on the list. Its just bad
The xx
2/5
There is actually no reason these guys should have two albums on the list. Crazy how much great stuff from the last 20 years this list overlooks so the fucking xx can have 2
The Crusaders
3/5
Album was fine in the background. My Lady is sampled on a Mac Miller song from Faces that I really like, which was pretty fun to hear. As far as jazz goes this isn't doing enough for me to really care about it, but it's also not really bad
Paul Simon
4/5
Chill album. Pretty good. Liked it a lot more than Graceland
Otis Redding
4/5
Otis Redding? More like Otis bl... oh my god
The Roots
3/5
It’s fine. I’m pretty sure the roots are Jimmy fallons live band which makes it hard for me to take them seriously as real artists. But also this album just wasn’t that good
Brian Eno
4/5
Honestly I don't even know. Parts sucked ass and were hard to get through, and parts - the first few songs, the last song - were really enjoyable and clearly very influential on a lot of the stuff I like. Pretty entertaining album even though it isn't the easiest listen at times
Tricky
3/5
I usually feel pretty let down by trip hop albums because I go in expecting dummy and there isn't really anything that compares. It's pretty telling that probably the best song on this album is basically glory box. Still pretty good though
The White Stripes
4/5
I was talking to Alex about my feelings towards REM today. I feel pretty much the same way about the white stripes. Always solid, never really blows me away
The Pharcyde
3/5
Decent
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
Kinda interesting. Mediocre music
The Go-Go's
4/5
Like Blondie but I was paying less attention
Paul McCartney
3/5
Least favorite Beatle
Devendra Banhart
2/5
Not offensive but also not good at all
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Too hipster
Underworld
2/5
Another British electronica album that is way too long and doesn’t really do anything unique or interesting
Happy Mondays
4/5
You’re twisting my melon man
John Lee Hooker
3/5
I kinda liked it. I think learning about blues and how important it was in class has helped me appreciate the genre more
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Geordie Greep actually stole this dude's whole flow
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
I like dinosaur jr, they have some good songs. This album wasn’t amazing, but I liked parts of it. The end was pretty ass unfortunately
5/5
I like britpop. Oasis is very good. I’ve listened to like 4 albums today. I’m going to bed
Meat Puppets
3/5
Had some decent moments but generally pretty underwhelming
Dwight Yoakam
2/5
Really bland and forgettable. Doesn’t deserve a spot on the list
Circle Jerks
3/5
Respect
Amy Winehouse
5/5
The goat. Most songs don’t hit quite as hard as stuff on back to black, but the talent is still there and there are a few fantastic tracks
Elvis Presley
3/5
Pretty mediocre
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Don’t really understand this pick. Feels like Springsteen is well past his prime and this is a pretty unnecessary addition to the list
David Bowie
4/5
Thought this one was pretty entertaining. Pretty sure there's only 1 Bowie album left for us to get
Manu Chao
3/5
It was fine. Got pretty boring after a while
Rod Stewart
2/5
Dull
Sisters Of Mercy
4/5
Higher energy version of the cure. I liked it
The Doors
4/5
A little disappointing compared to their self titled, still pretty good
Britney Spears
2/5
I have a similar problem with almost all late 90s/early 2000s pop, which is that it sounds super dated, and often there's only one good song on the album and the rest is filler that's just a worse version of the good song. Also the albums are usually a lot longer than they need to be
Tangerine Dream
3/5
More mid ambient/electronica
KISS
3/5
Kiss seems like more of a gimmick than an actually good band, but this was fine. Super basic and didn’t really take risks, but had some solid songs
Gene Clark
3/5
Didn’t think he had a great voice but the album was solid
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Few really great songs, good amount of filler. Seems like that’s kinda how most Stevie albums are - really good, not quite great
Yes
3/5
There was one song on here that I really liked most of. The rest was still dumb stupid prog. Gonna give it a 3 instead of a 2 for the one song because the rest was more boring than offensive
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
This is a tough one, because there are parts of this album - and even entire songs - that I do really like and think are quite good. However, Anthony Kiedis is the worst (pretty sure he bragged about sleeping with a 14 year old as an adult, and is just generally not a great dude) and his rapping is comically bad and makes some parts of the album unlistenable. So I guess this album gets a 3
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Real strange. Don't really like prog, but this was at least interesting to listen to despite being a little boring
Common
2/5
This was such a pain to get through. Over an hour long but not a single memorable song on the whole album, which is surprising because I mostly liked the last common album. Felt like the whole thing was just filler
Aphex Twin
4/5
A bit long but I thought it was pretty good
Elliott Smith
5/5
Quite different from either/or, but still fantastic the whole way through
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Pretty fun album to listen to even though i didn’t love a lot of the individual songs. Not a big fan of the cover though
Gang Starr
3/5
Could never really get into gang starr. Their stuff sounds a little too dated for me. Still a decent album
a-ha
4/5
Pretty poor mixing and general production. Besides that, most of the album outside of take on me is just alright - I did like the sun always shines on tv though. But take on me is one of those hugely popular songs that I think deserves all the hype. That song makes me happy every time I hear it, and I'm honestly considering giving this album a 5 just for that
Koffi Olomide
3/5
Generally a pleasant listen
Big Star
4/5
Actually shockingly good considering how indifferent I felt about the last big star album we got. Between a 4 and 5
Kate Bush
4/5
Super unique and interesting album. The highs are super high, but I unfortunately do not like some of the songs enough to give it a 5
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
Listened at gym. Twas pretty annoying
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
It was pretty good
Steve Earle
2/5
As far as actual listening experience goes this was probably like a 3 but unfortunately I don't think twangy Walmart Springsteen deserves a place on the list
Björk
4/5
Another Bjork album that has some super interesting and beautiful moments but a bunch of parts that are a little too out there for me to truly love it. Think this one is on par with vespertine and a little better than medulla and debut, but not quite good enough for a 5
Einstürzende Neubauten
1/5
Jesus christ
Nirvana
5/5
Just straight up one of the greatest albums ever made. My face actually lit up when I saw we got this album
Ash
5/5
It feels like the list is pandering to me with these 90s british alt/indie albums
David Holmes
3/5
More mediocre electronica. Not that bad to listen to while working
Wild Beasts
2/5
More unremarkable and boring 2000s indie crap. Not really interesting enough for me to care
Lambchop
3/5
Pretty chill. Music was fine
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Don't like mellow Bruce nearly as much as energetic Bruce. This isn't as good as his other old stuff that we've listened to
John Grant
3/5
Like a sillier Rufus Wainwright. Not too bad musically, but a little too goofy for me to really take seriously. -1 for dropping the n word, which I don't think this guy is allowed to do
Alice Cooper
3/5
It was fine
Gil Scott-Heron
3/5
Pretty chill. I’m sure the lyrics were profound but I wasn’t paying bc much attention. Strange vibes for the gym
Happy Mondays
3/5
Like the last happy Mondays album but worse. I like the cover tho
Fatboy Slim
4/5
A lot better than most of the other 90s-2000s electronica/techno on the list
Bauhaus
3/5
It was fine
Coldcut
3/5
I don't listen to much house music, but surely there's a more interesting house album that could've been picked for this list? Seeing as this is one of very few albums we've had so far that really fall into that genre, this was a lot blander than it should've been. Still not a bad listen
Queen
3/5
Fine
Blur
4/5
I like blur
Sugar
3/5
It was pretty good. We've had better/more interesting alt rock that sounds a lot like this. This felt like some of those albums but lacking a personality
Dr. Octagon
2/5
Copernicus mentioned
Prince
4/5
Had never really given Prince a chance before this album. When I saw it was an early 80s album that was an hour and ten minutes long, I figured it'd probably be a slog - I was very wrong. Somehow both dated and interesting at the same time, and was a super fun listen. Great album that shockingly didn't feel bloated despite the runtime and the longer than usual individual songs.
David Gray
3/5
It was fine
Funkadelic
4/5
It was quite good
David Ackles
3/5
Sounded like a musical, which I didn't really like. At least it was interesting enough to keep me engaged though
Nina Simone
4/5
Nina Simone has one of my favorite voices of any singer ever. This album was fantastic. Really high 4 or low 5
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
The hard on that this list has for mediocre 90s electronica is ridiculous
1/5
Really really bad
Fiona Apple
3/5
Did not like it as much as her older stuff. Still mostly liked listening though
Morrissey
4/5
Morrissey is a kinda fucked up weird dude but I do like his music
The Kinks
4/5
I tend to like 60s pop, Kinks are just more boring Beatles, Sunny Afternoon slaps, good album
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
Definitely a baffling pick for this list. Doesn't feel very important, wasn't that interesting to listen to, songs just weren't very good. Too Rye Ay was a fun album (mostly because of come on eileen), but this album was pretty ass
The Beta Band
3/5
Liked this one more than the other beta boys album. It was a little less soulless, but still pretty bland
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
4/5
More than 2 hours of this is probably too much, but like I was saying to Alex, this sounds a lot like a lot of the stuff we’ve been learning about in roots of rock and roll. I think understanding the significance of a lot of the artists on here and the music that this album is imitating and covering definitely helps me like it more
William Orbit
3/5
mid electronica
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
More chemical brothers. Yay.
Ananda Shankar
3/5
A lot of pretty interesting and unexpected stuff on this. Fun listen
Minutemen
4/5
Maybe could've been trimmed down a bit. 40+ songs is a little excessive. It was still a good album though, had a pretty wide range of genres and was varied enough to keep it interesting through all 40 songs
Jamiroquai
5/5
I know jamiroquai is a little corny but their music always puts me in a good mood
Portishead
5/5
Such a unique sounding album. While I don't think the vibe works some of the time - I feel like there are songs where the vocals just don't really match the instrumental, which makes for a goofy sound - when it does work, it's one of the greatest songs ever. Sour Times, Roads, and Glory Box are all perfect songs for me. The lows on the album are pretty mediocre (but still interesting), but the highs are higher than almost anything else we've heard on this list so far
Eurythmics
3/5
Sweet dreams has always been kinda annoying to me. Fortunately I liked the rest of the album more than I thought I would. Wouldn't revisit, fun to listen to once.
The Beach Boys
4/5
I find this album cover hilarious and I love it. This album was really good; liked it a lot more than other beach boys stuff we've had. It was still nice sounding, but a little weirder, which made it more interesting
Malcolm McLaren
3/5
What the fuck was this? Some really old hip hop, some world, some... country? Is that what that was? Idk. Strange but engaging listen
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
4/5
This was actually quite good. Seems like something Matty p might like if he were still doing this
Jane's Addiction
3/5
These guys have done nothing to stand out to me at all
Barry Adamson
3/5
Overall not great, had some weird and unpleasant shit, but there were parts that I liked. Mostly just faded into the background though
Lightning Bolt
3/5
For a noise rock album with pretty low global reviews this actually wasn’t that bad
Grateful Dead
3/5
Long and a lot of noodling. There were some nice parts though
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Solid vibe. Nice album
Robert Wyatt
1/5
What the florp
Kraftwerk
2/5
Listened on a train in Europe and it was still booty
Hawkwind
4/5
Pretty long but pretty good. Kinda wild even though I was half asleep for most of it
The Hives
3/5
Good energy and not very long which made it pretty fun to listen to. Decent album
Ryan Adams
3/5
Some parts sounded like Springsteen and Dylan, and some parts were a bit too sad boy country for me. Mid
Judas Priest
2/5
Boring and unremarkable metal. The one notable song is breaking the law which is only popular because it’s fucking stupid
Hüsker Dü
4/5
Too long for what it was but I was fuckin with it
The Stooges
4/5
I fw the stooges
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Awful voice great album
Fairport Convention
4/5
I’m a fairport convention enjoyer. Couldn’t say why but I like their vibe
Beatles
5/5
Starting to like these guys
Mj Cole
3/5
Mediocre
Barry Adamson
3/5
There were parts that I did like and parts that I did not like
Marilyn Manson
2/5
Honestly was kinda fucking with parts of it. I guess I was in a really weird mood. Still gonna lose points for stupid lyrics and being too long, but this will narrowly avoid a 1
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
The streets but less funny
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
It was pretty good
The KLF
3/5
It was fine. Pretty much exactly what I expected
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Liked it a lot
10cc
3/5
Fine. A little bit too much going on though, couldn’t really get into it
Beck
3/5
Beck definitely has too many albums on this list. At least he’s better than Elvis Costello, so I didn’t really mind listening
Johnny Cash
5/5
My roots of rock and roll professor said that his only real regret was skipping a Johnny cash concert. I can see why; seems like an entertaining dude and this seems like it would’ve been a great concert
OutKast
4/5
Still don’t understand why aquemini isn’t on this list. This album is good, but it doesn’t make sense to have this in over aquemini
Billie Holiday
4/5
These songs all sound the same but my mom liked Billie Holliday a lot so I heard a lot of her growing up which means I enjoyed listening
Hole
5/5
Billy corgan having a writing credit on this makes sense. Liked it more than the other hole album; high 4 or low 5
Incubus
3/5
It was fine. Not very memorable
1/5
Finally got around to listening. Wow
Mudhoney
4/5
Not as good as the last mudhoney album
Leonard Cohen
3/5
It was pretty good. Not as much of a fan of spoken word type stuff though
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
This was alright. I feel like it had a lot of potential - the way a lot of the songs started had me excited, but they all ended up sounding like the same basic ass post punk stuff. Looking forward to their other album on this list
Badly Drawn Boy
4/5
Actually pretty good. I feel like albums I don’t know at all are always at a disadvantage ratings wise so I’m gonna give this a 4 because I was kinda fuckin with it
Genesis
2/5
Not real music
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Definitely better if silver springs is included, and oh daddy and don’t stop are pretty ass imo. Other songs are still good enough for this to be a 5 though
Tom Waits
3/5
Waits’ other album was at least strange in an interesting way. This one was a little disappointing; a lot more spoken word poetry which I don’t really like. Still an alright album
Merle Haggard
3/5
Decent country. Nothing special
Hot Chip
4/5
Sounds like these guys borrowed a lot from groups like new order and lcd sound system, which made for a pretty good (if unoriginal at times) album
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
Fine
Brian Wilson
3/5
It was alright. About what I’d expect from a beach boys solo album; sounds like The Beach Boys but a little less interesting. I know he died which sucks and I feel bad complaining but this probably doesn’t need to be on the list
The Darkness
3/5
Not actually that good but still pretty entertaining. Don’t think I’d want to listen more than once though
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
Probably the most creative and consistent hip hop album ever. Can't not give this a 5
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
I was mostly asleep on a bus listening to this. Maybe it deserves another chance, but I have too many albums to catch up on. I think it was solid
Faith No More
2/5
This was pretty bad
Fatboy Slim
3/5
Parts were good, but mostly just mediocre. As is the case with every 90s techno/electronica album, it was too long
Blood, Sweat & Tears
4/5
Is this like the origin of jazz fusion or something? Don’t really love that genre but this was a good album. Very unique. A lot of different stuff going on
The Byrds
4/5
The byrds, similar to the kinks, (and most other 60s stuff on the list) are consistently good but not great. Just like 90s techno there are way too many albums from this corner of the music scene on this list that are probably not different enough to warrant all of them being on here
Suicide
2/5
What the fuck
Suede
3/5
I wanna like suede because they’re just another 90s britpop adjacent band but I just can’t get into them. Pretty boring album
The Band
3/5
Fine. Like one song I really like, indifferent about rest
The Waterboys
3/5
It was pretty good. Kinda reminded me of the Pogues or something (Alex correct me if that’s wrong). Nice cover of sweet thing
Louis Prima
4/5
It was good. I feel like the older albums tend to be a lot less out there for the most part so it’s a lot easier to like them
Caetano Veloso
3/5
Album cover kinda threw me off but otherwise pretty good
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Did not impress me nearly as much as I thought it would. Maybe a 4, but I’m gonna give it a 3 for being kind of a letdown. Born to run better
Sonic Youth
5/5
Now I have nothing to look forward to
Country Joe & The Fish
4/5
Actually thought it was pretty good for some 60s psych rock that I’d never heard of. Don’t usually like this stuff
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
Meh. More unimpressive 60s stuff
The Verve
3/5
Pretty boring Britpop. In this case, boring does not mean generic; I feel like the verve do enough to achieve a pretty unique sound, so gotta give them credit for that. It’s just not that good
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
Frank Zappa trying too hard to be funny
Kanye West
4/5
Really is a shame he completely lost it. Would give it a five if it weren’t Kanye
Steely Dan
4/5
Been liking steely dan a lot more recently
Ute Lemper
2/5
Not good. At least I get to listen to the smiths now
The Smiths
5/5
Marr’s guitar is so so good, morrisseys weird vocals work so well, and as a result this album is fantastic. Some really beautiful songs on here
Gillian Welch
4/5
A little too sad girl country for me to really get into it, and for that reason i don’t think I’ll revisit much. That being said, still a very good album. Did enjoy listening
Simply Red
2/5
Not good
Missy Elliott
3/5
Very mediocre
Deep Purple
3/5
Pretty fun to listen to. I remember learning to play smoke on the water when I was a little kid. Still doesn’t stand out much
The Cure
4/5
Never really understood the hype for this album. It is the cure and it’s a good album so it’s obviously still getting at least a 4 from me, but the head on the door is a much more enjoyable album imo and that didn’t even make this list.
Shuggie Otis
4/5
I was expecting this to suck but tbh it was very nice. Really enjoyed it. Pretty unique compared to rest of list, and some really pleasant stuff on here
New Order
4/5
If only Bernard sumner knew how to sing
4/5
Blur is solidly in the “4/5” band territory for me. Always enjoyable, never really stands out enough to get a 5. Oasis better
The Young Rascals
3/5
Not really special but definitely more enjoyable than I was expecting considering how shit most of the 60s psychedelic stuff on this list is
New Order
4/5
Once again new order is at their best when sumner shuts the fuck up. I love new order and they have so many amazing songs but I just don’t think they have a single 5/5 album unfortunately
Sebadoh
4/5
Like this typa laid back indie rock a lot. Definitely had potential to be a much better album, I feel like the vocals don’t work as well as they should on a lot of the tracks. Still pretty good
ZZ Top
2/5
Didn’t have the same groove and energy as their other album on the list, which resulted in uninteresting hard rock that I am not a fan of
Mekons
2/5
Just not good
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
Meh. Unremarkable
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
We’ve had like 30 albums that sound and feel exactly like this album. Even the cover looks unoriginal. If this is neither unique nor very good, why is it on the list?
Joan Baez
3/5
Mid folk
The Thrills
3/5
We’ve been on a pretty long run of pretty mediocre albums. At least this one was kinda interesting. Hopefully something in me changes and I really like this Black Sabbath album
Black Sabbath
4/5
Really liked this. Unless I’m forgetting something this is my favorite metal album we’ve had thus far by a lot, really good
Primal Scream
5/5
Really unique and really creative. Great album
Radiohead
4/5
Doesn’t really hold up when compared to other Radiohead stuff, still a good album. As Om would say though, comparison is the thief of joy.
George Michael
3/5
Meh
Little Richard
4/5
Learned about him (and listened to some of this album) in roots of rock and roll. Interesting dude, fun listen
The Damned
5/5
Really good. Probably my favorite actual punk album we’ve had thus far. Would listen again
Morrissey
3/5
Felt kinda lacking compared to other morrissey/smiths stuff. Just kinda boring
Ozomatli
2/5
Interesting. I guess. Unfortunately also super ass. Like I kinda want to give it a 1
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Yeah Leonard early stuff much better than his late stuff
Skepta
3/5
Skepta is such a random pick for this list. I guess he's british so it makes some sense. Not the biggest Skepta fan but his music is still fun to listen to because of how damn angry he always sounds
The Adverts
4/5
Some more pretty sold early punk stuff. Honestly reminds me a lot of the damned album we just had
Tom Waits
3/5
Still don’t really like tom waits
Gary Numan
4/5
Really fun listen. Goofy voice definitely adds to the album
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
Worse arctic monkey
Travis
3/5
Generally pleasant and inoffensive at the cost of being unoriginal and boring. Easy 3, but still a pleasant listen
Everything But The Girl
4/5
One of my dad's favorite albums ever. I can see why; still got those weird ass Thorn vocals from Idlewild but now over some much more interesting dnb/electronica stuff that makes for a really unique and engaging listen
Robert Wyatt
2/5
Better than the last Robert Wyatt album I guess. Ridiculous that this dude gets at least 2 solo albums and Weezer gets none
CHIC
4/5
Another solid album from chic. Listening to it I can definitely understand why disco might die, but since I’m not sick of the genre yet I thought it was pretty fun
Killing Joke
3/5
meh
Richard Hawley
4/5
Kinda boring but kinda liked it. Really low 4
Baaba Maal
3/5
Meh. Too long
Radiohead
3/5
Not very good for a Radiohead album
Johnny Cash
5/5
Johnny cash live album. No complaints
The Cardigans
4/5
I liked it
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
More mediocre pretentious Zappa crap. Doesn’t need to be on list
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
Meh
Radiohead
5/5
Nude->all I need might be the greatest 3 track run of all time
Fela Kuti
3/5
Meh
Lucinda Williams
4/5
Some solid country ish indie ish stuff. Liked it, probably won’t listen agaib
Gang Of Four
4/5
Entertaining
T. Rex
5/5
Something about this albums sound is so unique. Every single song is great
Roni Size
3/5
Too long but I feel like I’ve come around to drum and bass a little. At least it’s kinda fun if you can get past the repetitiveness
Jeff Buckley
5/5
Bob Dylan
5/5
Listened to blood on the tracks a while back and went from really liking Dylan to him being one of my favorite artists. I've been trying not to listen to his stuff so I can hear it for the first time when it pops up on this list, so first time hearing this album. Not a lot to say other than it was great and I really liked it
Isaac Hayes
4/5
70s movie soundtrack so you kinda know what you’re gonna get. Still really good
Dr. Dre
4/5
Really good. First half is probably a 5, but second half drags it down
Black Flag
3/5
Don’t really care about punk for the most part
Laura Nyro
3/5
Not that good but also at least pretty interesting
Ghostface Killah
3/5
It was alright. Some good moments. Too long though
Erykah Badu
5/5
I mean I knew about this album but I never realized how good it was. Exceeded expectations
Michael Jackson
5/5
Even if this album wasn’t completely full of classics thriller alone is a good enough song to get it a 5. But thriller to beat it to Billie Jean to human nature to pyt is insane
k.d. lang
4/5
It was pretty good. Much better than I remember the last kd lang album being
Donovan
3/5
Way too much mediocre 60s psychedelia shit on here. Album was fine, just kinda feels like there were a ton of artists hopping on this psych pop circlejerk in this decade making the same damn album over and over
Bob Dylan
5/5
Too much moaning
Bob Dylan
5/5
Bob Dylan fans eating good
Method Man
3/5
Aight
Kate Bush
3/5
I feel like Kate bush is really mid except every once in a while she’ll accidentally make a really good song. This album lacked good songs
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
A couple great songs and some alright ones
Elvis Costello
2/5
I do not like Elvis Costello
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
Solid
Queen Latifah
2/5
Somehow never even knew queen latifah made music. This was not good
Prefab Sprout
4/5
Very 80s but it actually works quite well for this album. The vibe kinda reminds me of the replacements but a bit blander
Aerosmith
3/5
Exactly what you’d expect
The Monkees
3/5
They talk about frisbee
X-Ray Spex
3/5
Cool how early something like this came out, but unfortunately pretty average in terms of quality
Dead Kennedys
3/5
Always kinda surprises me when an albums best song is at the very end. Most albums just start throwing filler at you and that’s when I kinda tune it out so when holiday in Cambodia came on it kinda caught me off guard
Chicago
3/5
Liked it a lot more than I thought I would
Isaac Hayes
4/5
Wowza. Pretty close to a 5
Blur
4/5
Blur give us another pretty good but not great album
4/5
Pretty good
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Not on par with songs in the key of life but otherwise really good for Stevie. Definitely feels like less filler than talking book
CHVRCHES
4/5
It’s quite good. The first 4 tracks kinda carried the album and were noticeably better than the rest, but those 4 were really good
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
From what I can remember this is better than the other Sly Stone album was, but that was almost 2 years ago at this point so idk
Wilco
5/5
Jesus etc is a fantastic song. The rest was also good
The Charlatans
3/5
Worse happy Mondays. Still liked it
Alice Cooper
3/5
Just don’t really like Alice cooper that much. Not hard to listen to but also not that interesting
Supergrass
5/5
Like a freakier oasis. Liked it a lot
Motörhead
4/5
I should not like motorhead but for some reason I do
Cowboy Junkies
3/5
Kinda like fairport convention but more country and more boring
John Coltrane
3/5
Alright. Feel like we haven’t had much jazz recently, at least compared to how much we had at the start
TV On The Radio
2/5
All the 2004 albums on this list suck
Pavement
5/5
So so so much better than that last pavement album. And I didn’t think that other one was bad, this one was just great
Brian Eno
4/5
Brian eno is really good. I’ve never really been blown away by a song on first listen quite like by the river. Almost want to give the album a 5 for that but I don’t think I liked the rest quite as much
Mott The Hoople
3/5
Not bad
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
Meh
U2
3/5
Fortunately this album has Sunday Bloody Sunday which is like the only U2 song I like. The rest was not that good
Kings of Leon
2/5
3 kings of Leon albums is just so fucking ridiculous
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
An hour plus of bland nothingness. This shit feels like AI generated hotel lobby music, not something I'd want to listen to while stoned
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
Somehow even more twee than the other belle and Sebastian album
The Vines
3/5
It was fine
Klaxons
2/5
The selection of post 2000s albums on this list is so dogshit. That’s not to say this album in particular was awful; I didn’t really like it, but it wasn’t so bad. It’s just that so much good music has been released since 2000 but there’s so much super mediocre stuff in its place. I do not understand it at all
Kate Bush
1/5
What the actual fuck was this kate
The Byrds
3/5
Not as good as other byrds albums. Pretty mediocre
Giant Sand
2/5
There are like 10 albums on this list with the same early 2000s freaky hipster vibe that sound and feel exactly like this and none of them deserve to be on the list
FKA twigs
4/5
FKA twigs is weird. Music itself wasn't great but at least it was interesting and unlike anything else we've had on the list so far, so that made it a relatively fun listen
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
This was so much fun to listen to
Mike Ladd
1/5
How does stuff like this even get made? Nobody thought to tell this dude that it was ass before he released it?
Carpenters
4/5
It was a pleasant listen
The Fall
3/5
The fall's music is all in that fine to listen to once but don't wanna listen again tier for me
Lana Del Rey
4/5
I like Lana and absolutely think she deserves at least one spot on the list. I do not understand why this would be on here over NFR though, but it seems like the list never gets newer albums right
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Me when I leave my wallet in el segundo
Robbie Williams
3/5
For a guy with a movie where he is a fucking monkey this was pretty boring. Just felt like a more corporate take on britpop. I can see why it never really made it to the states
Brian Eno
3/5
Two interesting artists but unfortunately this is a pretty boring album
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Weird
Randy Newman
3/5
This was nice but I’m gonna forget about it in 3 days
Beastie Boys
2/5
Just don’t like the beastie boys very much
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
This was not good
3/5
It was fine
Bob Dylan
4/5
I never like the oldhead albums as much as I feel like other people do. This was pretty good but doesn’t really compare to older Dylan stuff
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Voodoo child is one of the greatest songs of all time and probably the best album closer ever. The rest of the album was good too.
Madonna
3/5
She wanna be carti so bad
The Gun Club
4/5
Pleasant surprise. Less groovy than Gang of Four but mostly pretty similar
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Completely indifferent about this
The Young Gods
2/5
This was not good. Album 700 tho
Traffic
3/5
Interesting title for a not very interesting album
Guided By Voices
4/5
This was actually a pretty interesting album. Feel like this would be a good one to go learn more about because there was a lot I liked but it just felt kinda unfinished for some reason. Maybe it was all the super short track which I’m sure Vardaan is gonna love
Led Zeppelin
4/5
My favorite Led Zeppelin album so far. First one where I actually understood the hype
Miles Davis
5/5
Depeche Mode
4/5
These dudes lowkey solved synth pop with enjoy the silence. The rest of the album is good not great, but that song is just something else
Minor Threat
4/5
Hardcore punk isn’t something I regularly have in my rotation but I do understand the appeal. Kinda wish I was around in DC in the 80s because I feel like this is the type of stuff you really have to see live. I don’t see myself listening to these songs again but this was a good album
The Style Council
3/5
This bruh was in the jam? I guess that’s a little surprising. I would rather a jam album be on this list (maybe there is one? Idk)
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
Pretty boring country rock up until free bird. Free bird was good
Roxy Music
3/5
Kinda interesting but not as good as I was hoping it would be
David Crosby
4/5
I like David Crosby
The Bees
2/5
Boring
Crowded House
3/5
Probably the biggest group that I’d never heard of from this list - 12 million monthly listeners (ig mostly from their top song?). I recognized their most famous song but nothing on the album. Album was ok.
Deep Purple
2/5
Boring
Missy Elliott
3/5
Fine
Talvin Singh
3/5
Fine
Daft Punk
4/5
It is criminal that this is on here over discovery. Still a fun album
Billy Bragg
3/5
It feels wrong to compare this to yankee hotel foxtrot. This was worse
Baaba Maal
2/5
Madonna
3/5
Very similar to the other Madonna album we just had. Why the fuck does Madonna get two albums that sound the same released two years apart but we can’t have both homework and discovery? Dude who made this list is actually geeked
Miles Davis
5/5
Not as good as kind of blue but still great
Prince
3/5
Prince is pretty overrated to me and this was also a lil too long
Bonnie Raitt
3/5
Nice voice. Pleasant listen. Not very interesting though
D'Angelo
4/5
Good the whole way through. No complaints
Tim Buckley
3/5
Vardaan is NOT gonna like the average song length on this one if he ever listens
Elastica
4/5
Sounds pretty dated for a mid 90s album but any britpop is an automatic 4 for me so it doesn’t matter
Jane Weaver
3/5
Solid
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Led Zeppelin remains in the consistently good but never as good as people say tier right next to pink floyd
Pulp
5/5
Oasis>pulp>blur>suede
