Reviews (page 12 of 14)

3. Un poco rollo.

I’m going to stick with the Bob Ross comparison but I enjoyed this album more than Pink Moon

Me gustó, no es mi gusto/estilo, pero es buen álbum.

Totally reminds me of everyone smoking and listening to sweet music at Hohman’s. Honestly really great smooth music

Not bad but not my type at all. But good nice maybe i need to listen couple of times. esp something about sky one is good.

Surprised me. For some reason I was expecting something dark and broody. Reminded me more of Rodriguez. Even a little loungey at times. Interesting, though not what I'd usually love putting on.

It was ok. Didn’t set my world on fire

i think it was completely average; i really enjoyed some of the songs at the end i think it definitely got more interesting!

More 70s vibes

Chill album, might listen again

In terms of dad rock, its hard to go on. This album for me was able to capture the chill vibes and authentic sounds that dad rock usually looks achieve and this album does it wonderfully. I has its roots firmly in the psych genre without being too produced and it really leans into the folksy tones that helped produce the genre.

interesting stereo mix in the very beginning of the Introduction!

I hadn’t heard this one before. I purchased Pink Moon in the early 00’s, when that car commercial was big. I liked that album, it was definitely good, but I like this better. The melancholia is still present, but overall it’s a more uplifting experience. I like the use of the backing instruments and/or orchestration. Bonus points for having a song used in The Royal Tenenbaums. I might go hunting for a used copy of this, I like it

Not mesmerising, but nice

This is okay. Nothing too exciting.

voice is not captivating but I appreciate the layers

Good shizzle will go again. Still sounded fresh

Not bad

Enjoyable listen.

Didn't really know this chap previously. Its a notch above you standard singer songwriter type stuff as the music is more layered. He's not the greatest singer but it sort of works. Maybe lacking a few hooks for my tastes, but its nice. 3/5

3.6 - Pleasant, easy listening in a good way. Pretty acoustic arrangements. A cozy album to put on on a lazy Sunday morning or rainy afternoon.

Esta bien. Música algo folk de los 70

Beautifully sad folk rock effort, stuck between the first melancholic Five Leaves Left and the depressing Pink Moon. Inspiring arrangements, punching lyrics, charismatic singer. 3,5 stars

Listened in two sessions. Didn't really captivate me.

The introduction was promising. Overall a fine album for listening to in the background, but no song really grabbed me. A little jazzier than I tend to prefer

I like or love everything that Nick Drake has done, but this album falls at the 'like' end of the scale. The songwriting is there, but watch out for some of those soupy string arrangements

I didn’t think that I knew who this was until about the third or fourth song and I recognized it from a movie that I liked. Overall I liked the album a lot and it was nice soothing music to listen to

Not too bad, bit of easy listening

Takie sobie.

Mis canciones fav: "Ay the Chime of a City Clock" y "One of These Things First". 7.5/10

Not as good as the other one we heard.

Not my cup of tea. Pleasant but not particularly engaging.

Might be my favorite Nick Drake album but that's not saying much. Like every Nick Drake album, songs blend together. Pretty good. 6-7/10

Very 70’s. Like could feel the 70’s through the earbuds. Kind of chill. I dig it.

It was ok

Chill, but not for me.

Liked it

Nice folk album

A really good album. But did we already listen to this one? Or was it another Nick Drake album? Am I going crazy???

Light folksy singer. Not bad.

An ok album to listen to but not something I'll likely go back to.

Groovin’

Very Chill Indie/Folk vibe. Not necessarily my vibe but the vocals are soothing and music is light and happy

i like the style but its not that different to the other one

Good. I can hear some Housemartins and Beautiful South in here; I wonder if this was an influence.

Väldigt mjuk britpoprockfolk. Säkert bra vid rätt mood.

I don’t like Nick Drake. I don’t know how many more albums I will have to suffer through but it feels like I’ve already had 3?

very slow typical for that time i guess he is just yapping with a guittar

Just not my thing. Not impactful, didn’t stand the test of time

acoustic. folk. somber.

Bit boring sorry

didn't really like it

The second album from Nick Drake is more of the same. Nick is very talented musically, but I don’t care for his works. They elicit almost no emotion and do nothing for the listener.

I feel very indifferently towards this. All the songs sort of blurred into one and I’m sure the words are really lyrical but I couldn’t make out what he was saying

List guy likes Nick Drake. We get it. Now can we get back to something ... bryter?

First time hearing this Not sure about the upbeat tone or the jazzy accompanying instruments While it always seems a little sad that Nick didnt get much recognition during his lifetime, I'm not sure I would have been huge fan if his musical output had continued any longer There's something about the voice that I dont much care for Its okay, but I wont be circling back on this one

I liked the songs without vocals.

Ehhhhh.

This genre.

Okay. Funky. Sounds like background music in a niche coffee shop tbf but wouldn’t be rushed to listen to any of the songs soon.

It was mid Like all the Songs were Calm Songs Witch is Not Bad and i addete one to my playlist so yeah 6.5/10

I simply don't like Nick Drake's voice or singing style, and I find the album really boring—you keep waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever does. The only song on the album that I actually like is "Hazey Jane II

Better than the other two on the list, but I still didn't like it.

Nick Drake has never captivated me, and this album didn't change that.

What a snoozer. This album sounded like John Denver had a concert, but he had to cancel so his roadie tried to play for the crowd.

I'm not sure who Nick Drake's intended audience is, but it is not me. Sure, he's pleasant enough to listen to, but it's boring. I suppose it would be nice date music or something inoffensive in the background. If you had asked me when this was recorded I would have said 2011 in Portland, but I was surprised to find out it was in 1971, so it's ahead of its time when it comes to hipster music.

Doesn’t sound 55 years old, but not my style

No está malo, pero no me gusta tanto

159. ok

Me entristeció mucho, y no de una manera buena o bonita.

Well shoot, 2 in a row from Nick Drake who was new to me before the project. This album worked a little more for me than Pink Moon due to the more complex instrumentation besides guitar, but it's still not something I'd revisit.

Mellow album with one song I already liked on it, the rest was quite forgettable though

This album is somewhere between his first and his next album. Not much more to say.

Wow, this early Drake is so much different than he sounds now. Ok, not that Drake. Though I'm not a fan of Drake, I'd take it over music by Nick Drake. Dull. Not unmusical, but boring.

Tää oli vaikee! ekan kuuntelun jälkeen oisin heti antanu huonot arvostelut. Päätin sitten kuunella uuestaa ja oli muutama iha hyvää kappaletta joukossa. Top 3 1: Poor Boy 2: Northern Sky 3: Sunday Lopullinen arvostelu 2/5, Riippuen tunnelmasta.

Didn’t hate, but did kind of find this boring. 2

The instrumentation is exceptional, especially the horns and string arrangements. I also enjoy the piano play throughout this album. Nick Drake has influenced so many artists that I admire but I’ve always had a tough time connecting with his soft vocal delivery.

My favorite of these three (!) albums, but I'm having a hard time remembering anything remarkable about it.

3rd Nick Drake album on this list, and his albums remain consistently boring.

I've never listened to a folk music before. This album is decent 5/10. The mix is prefect

I really want to like Nick drake cuz his guitar playing is so pleasant but his voice just irks me a little

The songs are pleasant but who cares. Fine for background music but lacks emotions for me.

Hazey Jane II Hazey Jane I Poor Boy

I wish this album did less. Nick's voice is very soft and I think it could be very suiting for the style of music he wants to play. But this is doing too much. Northern Sky is a pretty song, but by-and-large, I feel that all the orchestration here is taking away from Nick's playing and singing. A lot of my friends told me that I would like Pink Moon, since that album is 99% just Nick's voice and guitar. Maybe I'll like Pink Moon when I get there. But as of now, this is all the Nick Drake I know. Wasn't a fan. I wish it wasn't so posh. It's weird. It simultaneously feels like it's trying to do so much, and it's just...not anything to me. I'm hoping that this isn't how I feel about folk in general.

I used to not get Nick Drake—I still don’t get him, but I used to not get him too.

I wanted to like this…I listened three times but ultimately it faded into background soundtrack every time.

This seemed generic folky country. Didn’t get me neither sad nor longing for dirt roads and old tomes

Didn't finish it. The album sounds polished but his voice is uninteresting for me.

Bof. Jolie instrumentation Mais un peu toujours pareil

Pas aimé

I didn’t like the most part of the album, but I liked “poor boy”

Not bad, but a whole album was a bit much

Never heard of album or band. Cool sound to start it off. I like the strings a lot. Hazey jane II is just ok. Good background track, vocals/lyrics are lacking. Similar feeling about at the chime. Not the biggest fan of this guys voice. Songs also are just not very catchy. One of these thins is very relaxing. Better songwriting, still not great. I like the piano. Similar feelings about Hazey Jane I but I like the strings. I like bryter layter because there’s no vocals. Flute pisses me off tho. Don’t like fly. I’m getting sick of this album. It’s all blending together and I hate the guys whiny voice. Piano solo is cool on poor boy. This is just piano bar music it’s not listen to a whole album music. Northern sky is fine, more of the same. The background tracks are so much better than the vocals. Sunday is fine. I just don’t like flute songs. This album as a whole was so average. Again just another album. More bad than good I think, I can’t get over the bad vocals. 2 stars.

Not bad but boring

Chill songs to smoke cigs to

Ugh; the generator made me listen to Drake again only a few albums after "Five Leaves Left". Has it stood the test of time? Sadly, no.

Fine, not the best. Not the worst.

Enjoyed the soft background music and the lyrics. Just not a fan of his vocals. One of These Things First stood out. 2.5/5. Update, I thought I had a Nick Drake album before, so after searching I had and wrote the same comments on that one. :)

Fairly bland noodling

Aangenaam maar een beetje saai

A non event

Meh. Too long and sounds like an artist trying to sound like he’s got street cred

Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter is often hailed as some delicate, transcendent folk-jazz opus, but honestly, it’s about as invigorating as being greeted by an oddly moist and room‑temperature handshake from someone who looks like they’ve never successfully completed a sentence out loud. The album wafts in like a timid ghost asking if it can maybe, possibly, sort of haunt you—if that’s not too much trouble. Every track feels like it’s been ironed flat, spritzed with lavender, and tucked into bed before 9 p.m. The strings swirl politely, the vocals hover like a sigh that got lost on its way to becoming a thought, and the whole thing has the structural integrity of a paper straw left too long in a milkshake. People call it “lush,” but it’s the kind of lush that’s afraid to make eye contact. It’s background music for people who think chamomile tea is “a bit intense.” You keep waiting for something—anything—to grab you, but the album just pats your hand gently and whispers, “No sudden movements.” By the end, you’re left with the distinct impression that Bryter Layter isn’t an album so much as a prolonged shrug set to music. Two stars because it’s pretty in the way a watercolor painting of fog is pretty, but let’s not pretend this isn’t the sonic equivalent of a handshake so limp you check twice to make sure the person is still alive. Better than James Taylor at least.

It's fine but nothing amazing. Just another decent 70s era singer/songwriter record. This would go on a giant stack of similar indie records today.

10 - Nick Drake - Bryter Layter - Rating = 2 Another one I’m not familiar with / 1971 release. Nice orchestra backed acoustic guitar airy setting to start. Into a horn-lead low ramble Hazey Jane 2… the vocal coming in is airy and a little high-pitched male vocal, sorta folky-ramble with horn punches… dated. At the Chime of a City Clock… slow acoustic to start with the soft vocals coming in… this is just sorta boring. One of These Things First I think I’ve heard before… rambling piano and vocal coming in on top… crooning a bit… not bad but a little background-ish. Hazey Jane 1 (why 2 before 1?)… intro is a little more attention grabbing… orchestral is okay… sort of just hangs there… Bryter Layter and Fly… sort of folky lingering non-offensive but not memorable. Poor Boy is like a jazz-guitar soft sleepy ramble that just sort of sits there. The Gospel-like singers add a little zip but not much. Northern Sky is one I’ve heard… soft piano, nice… but sounds a lot like the rest of this album, just a little better put together song. Flute to start dominates the sound as it builds a bit, but the flute just sort of wanders and this goes in circles. This is sort of just a mellow, airy sound… it’s nice but nothing I need.

I quite like the music but I find his voice a bit lispy and annoying. It might grow on me but I sort of doubt it.

We’ve had our one Nick drake. This is not the ‘must hear’

Not my cup of tea - just couldn’t get into it

Many of the reviews here praise Bryter Layter for its laidback coffee shop jazz-folk sound. Just as many criticise it for its laidback coffee shop jazz-folk sound. They can’t both be wrong. A fortnight or so after the fact, I’m still thinking about Amy Winehouse and the pain contained in her pair of albums and how, now, it is difficult not to read the art as forecast. It is a backwards thing to read the forecast after the event, but that’s all we can do after an early unnatural death. If we didn’t see it coming, we should have seen it coming. Nick Drake released three albums before he died. This is the second one we’ve listened to and I am confident that the third and final one will come up on the list. As with Winehouse, it is deigned that we must listen to the whole short canon at the expense of other records. Much like the slender gap between Frank and Back To Black, there is not much difference between Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter: the same lysergic haze, a musical solvent that breaks everything that should be bond together. Unlike Back To Black, there is tightened lyrical focus - Winehouse became fixated on the failing relationship - for Drake, everything is as inexact as it was on his debut. Nothing is become more solid, nor more stable. Winehouse was a victim of her success. Drake had no such luck. This records were made with no expectation, so were not subject to the same financial or market pressures as the Winehouse records. When reviewers here conjure up the coffee shop, they’re not wrong: this album, despite the ornate, busy arrangements, feels small and intimate. But how would Drake respond to the description “laidback coffee shop jazz-folk sound”? Was the soft, wilted sound intentional? Or the consequence of his depression, him having not enough bodily force to write something more declarative, more certain? Or was this a expression of that fuzzy lethargy, the ambivalence that exists a step above black despair and that takes all your energy to get there? Philip Larkin wrote dismissively of Sylvia Plath that “mad people don’t write about being mad.” This may be right or wrong. Certainly, depressed people struggle to write, let alone write about being depressed. Larkin himself knew that. This is not the music of depression, although Drake may hint at it here and there. I was struck, listening this time, how much of Nick Drake there is in Belle and Sebastian. Stuart Murdoch’s voice is similarly underpowered. The instrumentation is layered, but lflimsy. This record reminded me most of the early Belle & Sebastian recordings, when Stuart Murdoch was recovering from ME. This is not the music of depression, it is the music of malaise. It is smaller than the coffee shop. It is Marcel Proust in his sickbed, imagining a decadent world beyond the bedroom walls. But, because it is all in the invalid’s imagination, it is insubstantial, it is a haze, a dream. That is ambivalence. It is not laidback, it is in recline. 2 Shyter layter. This is music as flowery as your granny’s wallpaper and not quite as interesting. I can see that Drake being dead gives the morbid Five Leaves Left the juice necessary to at least keep you awake and stroking your chin for 40 minutes but I am baffled with this one. Nick Drake could rise from the dead and I still wouldn’t be interested in giving his second album another listen. 1/5

Очень красивый, мелодичный альбом. Добавил 2 песни, вряд ли буду переслушивать(Настоящий Дрейк)

So boring. It's fine, but its the most cookie cutter music ever. If aliens came to Earth and went like "HOOMANS PLAY US SOME OF YOR MOOSIC", this is what we should play, cuz it'd cover 90% of all of our music.

He definitely had talent, sadly it does not make for music that I enjoy. It's genuinely so drawn out and so boring. Not for me.

Non mi fa impazzire 2

For such pretty music, I wasn't expecting his voice to sound so light and whispery. I usually envision handsome men as having deeper, maybe raspier, singing voices. It is the soundtrack to a cabin in the woods or an antique shop worth setting foot into.

Not my style of music and his voice drags alot. Do like the folk vibe..

it sounds like going on a long road

Me gustó mucho la intro, siento que si tuviera una cafetería agregaría este álbum a la playlist si o si. Muy chill, la voz me relaja. Volvería a escuchar el álbum? Sí, pero porque necesito analizar más la lírica. 7/10

Carino, mi ha un po' stancato però

Very twee, the audio equivalent of a Bob Ross painting.

I think this is my last Nick Drake album. I definitely had Pink Moon, which is easily one of the worst albums in this project. Bryter Layter is much better. What I found interesting is that it is very stereotypical 70's singer-songwriter/folk that sounds like it was made in the 90's or later. His voice is pleasant and unique, but the lyrics are boring, and the whole record is very monotone. Much better than a dumpster fire isn't exactly good. Influence (sigh. I feel compelled to give a bump here, but similarly compelled to note that the influenced artists are REM and the Cure) 2. Quality 3. Hits 2. Intangibles 1. Hardcore meh 3.

Poor Boy

no lo termine d escuchar lol no era mi tipo losiento

I wasn't very interested in this album. It had some nice lyrical ideas but was quite forgettable.

Gone far too young.

Not my jam

Made me sleepy

Don’t like how the voice is so quiet and is a bit too jazzy for me

It’s like ok for a rainy lazy day

The songs are are very nice and relaxing - if the day calls for it

Bryter Layter ve Sunday'i sevdim sadece. pek benlik değil

113/1001 First listen. Never heard of this guy. Played it 4 or 5 times. I can’t remember a lick of it the next day. All seemed the same. No one song stuck out but it wasn’t bad. 4/10

32 albums in and my second Nick Drake album, not thrilled I am glad that there are at least some other sounds and instruments on this one, but it sounds like a collection of theme songs to 70's sitcoms. If Bob Dylan rhymed "Jane" with "again" I would probably think it was great, but for some reason it annoyed the hell out of me here. I do enjoy the piano on "One of These Things First". It would make top notch music to be placed on hold with your doctor's office. Actually maybe that's what all this music sounds like. "Fly" has my favorite singing on the album, but it sounds like Ren fair music, not a compliment. I haven't listened to Rage Against the Machine in years, but I felt irresistibly compelled to turn it on after this, odd reaction. I wanted to like it more than Pink Moon, and there are little touches here and there that I liked, but nope, still 2 stars.

538/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

no standout aspects for me

Introduction - 2.5/5 Hazey Jane II - 3.5/5 At The Chime Of A City Clock - 4/5 One Of These Things First - 3/5 Hazey Jane I - 3.5/5 Bryter Layter - 2.5/5 Fly - 3/5 Poor Boy - 4.5/5 Northern Sky - 3/5 Sunday -2.5/5

Music for in a bar when it's summer

not my taste

I've always disliked Nick Drake, despite loving singer-songwriters in general. Maybe it was the unintelligible mumbling on Pink Moon. Maybe it was the Dave Matthews-style voice. In any case, I failed to find the genius. This album, however...was almost enjoyable. It could grow on me.

I can see the allure of Cave’s sound but it might just have to hit me in the right mood for it, maybe? Melancholy Donovan is the best description (having read about him) I can think of, w/ more operatic strings.

Hard to get enthused about, but I can see he is talented as a composer and musician - maybe not as a singer. In saying that Joe Boyd does a lot of heavy lifting as the producer here - it sounds great for a early 70's production. usually these have a heap of treble bled off and sound like they were recorded of AM radio. not me though but can recognise why its here

Too whimsical, too much discordant jazz piano

boring

Ganz charmant - hat mich dann aber doch nicht so ganz abgeholt

not feeling it

sounded like i was walking through a rainforest

Not my type of music

Nothing to write home about, very bland and most songs sounded pretty similar. Meh.

Niente di che, musica da background musicale chill ma non particolarmente interessante. Non il mio genere preferito, nessuna canzone mi ha colpita particolarmente.

Started beautifully. It was ok. I don't think I'll play it again but was nice to listen to.

Never heard of him. Kinda hippie and kinda jazzy? Kinda unremarkable.

slow and calm. need to be in the right mood for it, a little boring after a while

Very cute album. I prefer his folky stuff to his more jazzy stuff. Aoibhe reckons the album sounds like something from the ‘Adventure Time’ soundtrack. Fav song is ‘One of These Things First’.

2.5 a bit too repetitive for me but the guitar is hauntingly pretty

Vocals were pretty good but nothing that really demanded my attention. The instrumentation was forgettable at best. The pacing was slow.

Nick Drake's reputation has risen over the years, climbing from a deserved reappraisal to being lauded as a tragic lost genius. I don't honestly think his music quite matches up to the mythology. Some people dislike the ornate production on this one. Personally I think it makes the most of some fairly slight material. There are not many memorable songs here (although I do love 'Northern Sky'). His singing is lifeless and his lyrics are not very interesting - it is just standard English pastoral with surprisingly little emotional connection to what we know of his life I will give a better score to Pink Moon, where his music finally linked up more with his feelings, but as doomed singer-songwriters go I don't think he had the talent of an Elliott Smith

Not memorable

Ah, so this is where all the holding music on call centers comes from!

Eh .... never heard of Nick Drake, I thought aster this album I would never hear of him again. But reading some other reviews, I guess there are two more of this albums to come.

zeer geschikt als wachtmuziekje op de telefoon

Nick Drake’s voice is a wonderful listen. Very chill, very soothing.

2 --- de Hueva

What a dreary load of old shit

Jeez I hate these albums man

2.1/5 Okaaay, this is the second Nick Drake album we've got since the start of this challenge. I rated the first with 2/5 cuz I really don't like Folk and singer/songwriter music. This album however - gets the same treatment. Why tf is this so boring? It's cool that we get to listen to things we wouldn't have otherwise, but that doesn't mean that it's good music. Thank god this genre (along with Hippies) was only big around the 60s/70s and died out quickly after.

Don't care for his voice

The music is soft, jazzy but perhaps too calm for me. Not interested in listening to it again 2,4/5

A bit like jack johnson

I love Northern Sky, but the rest all kind of sounded the same. It was pleasant but boring.

I can see why this album made the list, I can really hear the influence it had on singer/songwriter and indie music, especially among the Jack Johnson's of the world. The most striking thing about the album was how modern it sounded, it wouldn't sound out of place if I stumbled upon it on a random Tiny Desk concert or heard it on modern college radio. I found the instrumentation on the album really pleasant. The way the piano, strings, flute, etc. play off the guitar is really cool, and Nick Drake is an impressive guitar player. Unfortunately, that vocal style is nails-on-a-chalkboard to me. It sounds like he invented the "indie accent" so many artists today copy, and those whispery soft-spoken vocals drive me insane (in a bad way). I also found the "cute" lyrics grating. I really wanted to like this album, but unfortunately the vocals bring it down to a 2-2.5/5 for me.

Easy listening, good album. I may go back to it and I'll definitely listen to his 2 others.

This kind of music is just not interesting for me. It’s very calm, mellow, and vocal-driven. Some people like it, but I personally don’t find it fun. It’s chamber music, so it’s not as painfully minimal as some folk, but it is still not exciting for me at all. I don’t think there’s anything specific about this album that made me like it less than I otherwise would. It just follows the conventions of a genre I don’t enjoy. 5/10

Singer /Songwriters seemed to be a dime a dozen in the 70’s. And, quite frankly, I can’t stand most of them. It’s just some whiny dude whining about how lonely & depressed he is cause he can’t get laid. Boo hoo. And to top it all off I can’t stand Nick Drake’s voice. The instrumentals were nice though.

It's ok. Cat Stevens-ish, but not as good.

I just don't get it. I found these songs extremely boring.

If you said this was recorded in the 2020s, I would believe you. Unfortunately I don't like this style now or then.

Sad boy with an acoustic sings background music.

Folky, the intro is super nice, i dont like his melodies but his voice is nice and soft, it was okay too folky. 2/5

Sei la, vibe meio estranha. Mas algumas musicas boas

myeh i think Nick Drake is a decent songwriter, and this is solid hangover cure music. don't really care for him much as a vocalist or a performer. hard to deny the influence, though. +50 points for being referenced in that Boris cover deserves to be one of the 1001? i get the desire to have all 3 Nick Drake albums on it but realistically u could probably cut this one. though i'm certainly on the more negative end of opinions on him fwiw

I really enjoyed this album. Kinda sad music but very interesting lyrics

I don't feel like it's truly necessary to listen to Nick Drake's entire catalogue before you die. This medieval minstrel Nick Drake album is probably the worst of the lot.

I had high hopes but it never gets much past 'it fine to be on in the background' music. I never wanted to listen to more.

He has a nice voice but the songs blend in together and nothing stands out. Sounds a bit too upbeat

A celebrated artist that I do not "get." I don't find his voice interesting at all, and his lyrics are not nearly ear-catching for me to get the appeal. The songs all sound the same to me, too, though I appreciated the orchestral aspects here

Good vibes but nothing particularly stand out

Nice album for sure, but it just didn't hit me. Found it a bit *cough* boring *cough*. Northern Sky is a gem though.

Nice album with nice sounds, I'm sure. But boring to the core. Just not for me. Although Northern Sky is a gem.

A banger here and there but overall this album didn't do a ton for me

Gister geluisterd maar nu alweer vergeten

Simon and Garfunkle peaceful

Painfully boring Best Song: Hazy Jane 1 Rating: 4/10 Stars: 2/5

Sonically inoffensive and pleasing, but did nothing memorable for me.

The arrangements are nice on this album. But it's difficult for me to connect with this album. Not sure if it's just that the sounds are too much "of the time" for me, or what it might be.

Not really a fan of this one. Fail to see the direction. On one hand there is the quiet and beautiful acoustic guitar, but then on the other there is typical 70’s pop horn arrangement disturbing it. And then the vocals.. not that strong either

Folky with some irish hints. soft, busy acoustic finger picking. Horns.

Musically interesting but vocally left me feeling a little cold. Felt like the lyrical arrangement could've done with a little work and Drake's voice did not shine on this. The album felt to me like a kind of proto-Sufjan Stevens. I could feel the influence but nothing stood out.

Meh - decent 70's feel and effort. One or two memorable tunes.

bro got the mf clown shoes on bruh

Boring.

Kinda pussy

Enjoyed the arrangements, sax piano flute added to folk

Very 70s easy listening vibes. Folky with some generic jazz elements thrown in. Just ok for me.

Not a very memorable album, quite forgettable songs 2/5

I felt like I wanted to like this more, but it felt very bland to me.

At first this felt like a breath of fresh air, but in the end it was just boring.

Kjedelig

Nice, but not something I'll listen to a second time

liked the vibe and most of the songs, just didn't like his voice

I really don’t care for Nick Drake that much, I never got what the big deal was

1970s folk is not my bag. I listened to it yesterday and really cant recall a single thing about it so that should say a lot. I would have remembered if it was bad though. 2.5⭐️

Not a lot to say about this album. It was surprisingly musically deep/well composed for how relaxed it was.

To my untrained ear, these albums have to have something special to stand out. This one really doesn't. I feel like a one star is too little, but a two star is too much. So, I'm just gonna drop it a two star, and never listen to it again.

This is ok, but I preferred Five Leaves Left. This is bordering on jazz, for God’s sake.

Listenable but not exactly moving to me.

I got baited multiple times seeing this cover in other's pages thinking it was Akuma no Uta It was alright. Soft, slow, easy to listen, yet not very memorable

Nick Drake has his moments but, in general... meh

интро и аутро - прям красота, а все что между ними - скучновато

Dated music for mice in a cellar by moody castrato.

It's ok, TOO MELLOW!

aburrido

Pretty flute on the instrumental made me wish the rest was better

Vraiment pas mon style

Music for when you ring the dentist and they put you on hold for twenty minutes.

Faded into the background for me, 2/5

Didnt really care for it. It was interesting but a 1 and done.

More accessible than Pink Moon.

It was pretty and sad and quite boring at times

Rating: 5/10 Even with its beautiful instrumentation, I still found this boring. The instrumentation makes me feel nothing even though it's beautiful and I do not like Nick Drake's voice on this album.

eh, okay

At The Chime Of A City Cock

Who's got a hard-on for Nick Drake? Wow. Is this his 4th album on here? I think he's average as hell and sure doesn't require multiple slots on the Top 1001. I worked my way through this one too and had the same reaction I had to his previous albums on here. Nothing notable, just ok, weak voice, dated sound, boring songs. What am I missing? Apparently 16M people liked "Hazey Jane II" enough to listen to it, I struggled. It sounds like a song in the background of a 70's movie as they're doing a jolly roadtrip in the station wagon. 67M people listened to "One Of These First Things", again why? 84M people listened to "Northern Sky", I just don't get it, I was bored 45 seconds in. Popular album I see, apparently lost on a heathen like me. This has not stood the test of time. No hits. I hear no influence that resonates today. If you need an album to help you fall asleep, this might be for you! 2 stars for trying.

I didn’t think I’d like this one after reading the Wikipedia summary … but I was pleasantly surprised. It was fine (but still not my thing)

Decent background music but nothing memorable

His unimpressive voice ruins all the nice, jazzy music for me. 2,5

ho hum

Very calm, soothing, pleasant and ultimately forgettable. Folk/jazz with extra soft vocals. A few instrumental tracks. On the whole, I’m completely ambivalent about this album.

Half good

Sop fest not for me. I am sure there is clever intergrated tunes and whatever. Just so dull for me and not sure I can finish this album. Like jack johnson. Fine in background but to actually carefully listen I honestly dont think I ever would. Nope!

I recognize him from at track on the Royal Tennenbaums soundtrack. Not into his voice.

Really wasn't in a good mood while lsitening to this. It is probably a 3 but being stuck in traffic listening to this did a number to it. General 70s slop.

This I think is the least bad of the 3 (!) Nick Drake albums that have come up so far. There's something about his voice I just find very annoying

2.0 Nick Drake is not my guy. This is better than the other few albums we have covered so far. No more please and thank you

If folk music is your thing I’m sure you’d like this. Enjoyed the melodies and composition of the instruments, didnt feel connected to the vocals at all. 1001 albums starting to feel like i only need to listen to about 500 of these albums

Not fan of the vocals. Music is okay. This is just not my thing and the music does not move me. Based on reviews I will still get more Nick Drake unfortunately. I do not understand how this lands in the 1001 Albums.

I wasn't familiar with this album aside from "one of those things first" which I probably heard in the background of a Wes Anderson movie. No hate for this vibe, it's chill.

This is the second Nick Drake album in a row served up by the site. My experience listening to this was quite different from my experience with "Pink Moon." This is over-produced; over-orchestrated; and largely cheesy arrangements. The intimacy of the sparse instrumentation was a major feature of Pink Moon. This is cluttered. I would really like to hear this album with just his guitar and voice; maybe occasional drums and bass. 2 stars

I don’t hate it, but not for me.

I feel like whoever we get this guy, Buckley Snr or Brian Zeno it’s never what I remember the last one being like either the albums by the same artists are very different each time. Or that I just simply delete them after it stops. Was Nick drake always country?

2 weeks ago this may have got a 3 but, despite being pleasant, I've no desire to hear this again

Lovely! Although I'm not sure if it's exemplary for a top 1001, but I did enjoy it.

Na ja. Es ist ziemlich vor sich hingeplätschert. War aber nicht so schlecht, dass es störte. 2 1/2.

This is my least favorite of his three albums. Overproduced for his style. 2.5

Too melancholy for me, sorry bro

This would be perfect music to listen on the background while hanging out at a pub with mates but it doesn't evoke much emotions on me. Nothing wrong with it but I don't see myself putting the album on to specifically to listen to it.

Waiting room music

I felt as if this album was too tortoise for me I needed little more hare.

Not bad, not great. 2.5

not bad but It all sounds the same didn’t care much about it

Pleasant enough but nothing I’m running back to too quickly! Didn’t mind it for a bit of rainy day listening!

I prefer his acoustic stuff.

# 392 : I don't love it, I don't hate it. I thought it was very ordinary and Quiet forgettable. Might be alright in an elevator or as background music but that's about it.

Slow softy that isn't terrible but a bit boring. Drake's voice is wispy and makes you feel sleepy. I did not care for the tracks that introduced sax...made it sound like some cheap, slow jazz. Trying to figure out the album title and why is HJ2 before HJ1 in track order...hate that. Overall the album has some good writing and backup music (i.e., strings, acoustics, flute) but it's a skipper for me unless I'm drifting off to dreamland...1.63.

Not really for me. Also, why is Hazey Jane II before Hazey Jane I.

Ultimately, this is not Nick Drake at his best. The additional instrumentation is *weak*. Go listen to Pink Moon

I'm putting this on next time I have trouble falling asleep. Just not engaging to me at all. It's not bad, but I didn't think it was particularly good either. The instrumental parts were fine, and a couple songs were a little more interesting with a jazz vibe, but vocals and song composition didn't do much for me. 2.25

I bet if you ask Rick Beato he'll say its one of the best albums of the century... I don't know, it's a bit airy fairy for me. and when someone sings about that they can be a flute, thats where i lose interest.

I couldn’t feel lighter in my loafers after listening to the riveting flute solos. Please don’t make me listen to more of this guy.

Some good songs but do not like the vocals. Would be interested to hear another singer cover some of these.

Not really my thing. Felt a bit too old for my tastes. None saved to listen to again.

Meh...

Nick Drake's voice reminds me of a clarinet. Not much to criticize here, but I don't like the monotony and lack of variety in the way he uses it. We have another album full of mellow tracks, very understated and singer-songwritery, so you can and should probably focus on the lyrics. However, the vocals stand out so little to me and blend into the music as if they are just another instrument, so that I found it difficult to actually comprehend the lyrics at all. 2.5/5

This felt discordant to me. I really appreciated tracks like Introduction, Fly, and Hazey Jane I because of the elements of pyschedelic-rock that they brought - the flute interludes, the delicate and ethereal orchestral bits, that West Coast sound. It was very Jefferson Airplane and I was very into it. But then the ebullient jazz threw me. Why the fuck is Nick Drake singing over cocktail jazz that I'd hear at my Aunt Sarah's? It felt awkward and kinda contrived to me, and made the album lack cohesion.

Sad sleepy boy winter… nothing here (lyrics, vocals or music) grabbed me.

Ein wenig Soul, ein wenig Beat & ein wenig Country irgendwie von allem zu wenig.

Bit disappointed overall, I really like Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon but this not so much. The folky tunes are all good but I'm not mad about the more lavish arrangements.

Disco de grande qualidade sonora para o ano que foi produzido, mas não me pegou!

Drake's ethereal folk jazz has never hit me in the sweet spot. There's certainly no denying his music is poetry, but it's always just been a little too all over the place for me to grasp.

Drum schwirig. Sorry nick, so schlecht isch au nöd gsi </3 Bisch sicher e nette Burscht
