#1 Record
Big StarIt's like... They're almost good. The elements are there. There's egg, sugar, and flour, but it's not a cake. Close, but no cake.

Ugh. I'm almost the exact same age as Britney. I remember being icked by her treatment by the media, and how she was presented as a teen. I can't get over that when listening. I guess this is a great example of 90s pop, but most of the songs remind me of the end credits of bad romance movies. I actually said "wtf" at Soda Pop, and cracked up at "Email My Heart" Why is this my longest review?
Girl, leave him.
I was expecting to hate this, but I did not.
Oh Leonard. You were better than this. This album is SO disjointed. Waltzes, and synth and crazy high background singers... I'm gonna start making people listen to Jazz Police when the say they like Leonard Cohen but can only name one song. (And you know what song I mean)
Meh. Welcome to the jungle is obviously a banger. It's so easy is bad. I feel like there are four good songs on this album. The rest get by on Axel's unique voice.
I guess if I ever need to study again this is good music for it. The first 3/4ths, the last bit got annoying.
Mostly repetitive.
I couldn't finish a single song. I tried, I really did.
It's like King Crimson was forced to play a very fancy wedding.
I might listen again if I feel like being sad for no reason
I half liked it. The talk singing is not my favorite
So weird Circus? Piano bar? Spoken word hipster night at the library? Cough a lung up for me, Tom.
I won't listen to it again, but I see why it's here. Not my music for the most part, but I did save Roses to my everyday playlist.
I don't care for the general theme of a few songs, but it's a solid album.
Would have loved to listen to this on vinyl while a stoned teenager
God this album is boring. It's so boring I didn't notice when it ended.
It's fun, but no idea why it's here
...I think I like Megadeth now.
I didn't hate this, but I was confused when I read the genres. It's definitely not punk. I don't know what it is.
Good but I can't see myself listening to a lot of this. Can really tell it's about a breakup
I wish I knew more about funk so I could tell if this was groundbreaking or how different it was from the norm. It totally tells a story, I enjoyed it.
Not my thing, but listenable

Bring back old country
This would almost be a 4 but there was too much country influence. I do realize I just said I like old country, but not in Rolling Stone form.
It's just a bunch of dudes posturing. Except for the one woman. I'm gonna say 2.5 though, cause if I didn't understand English I would have almost enjoyed it.
The originals deserve to be here. The covers, meh. This album is mostly covers. The song "Strychnine" is an obvious early punk influence.
I really liked this album. I don't think I've ever heard or the band before. It's like soft-psychedelica. Casual psych? I don't know. The lyrics in a few songs were a bit weird and the rhymes pretty simple, but I like weird, and the music was good so whatever.
Just the other day I told my project buddy that I'd rather kiss Steve Harvey on the mouth than listen to Kate Bush. The universe was listening, so I got this album. Musically and lyrically, she's great. Her voice, however, is like watching interpretive dancers being strangled. I will admit, I take back what I said about Steve. But that's not because I changed my mind about Kate Bush, ! just really hate Steve Harvey.
Solid 90s alt-ish rock
Eeeeeh, I don't know
My friend says I'm stingy, so I'm rounding up this time. The Murder Mystery is too weird, but I liked it more on my second listen.
Jesus left Chicago is the only good ZZ Top song
I liked this. It was layered without being messy, good lyrics, occasionally good messages. I was surprised from a dude calling himself Q-Tip
I might need to add this to my list of favorite bands. I have no idea why I never came across them before.
In the immortal words of Marcus Brody, "I'd rather spit in your face."
I still don't know if I can say I like jazz. I'll start to like a song, then they play the same 4 notes 18 times in a row. Oh well.
Doodoodoodoodoo DOOT doo doodoodoodoo
As if I needed another reason to never go to Nebraska. Jesus Christ, who likes this sad sack bullshit music?
The bad outweighs the good here. I wish I could edit the songs, cause there's some good stuff. But Jesus. Stop saying the same things, you idiot. And quit with the screeching noises.
I get that the VU is very influential, and I like a ton of stuff that smarter listeners say were influenced by them, but calling this album good is like calling a bucket of cum a doctor.
I guess I'm not ready for this jelly.
Tommy Walker - Malicious compliance champion, 1921
Oh Leonard. You were better than this. This album is SO disjointed. Waltzes, and synth and crazy high background singers... I'm gonna start making people listen to Jazz Police when the say they like Leonard Cohen but can only name one song. (And you know what song I mean)
Sometimes familiar, sometimes unique, sometimes a bit cheesy. An all around fun album.
It's like Bond-esque funk, met a spaghetti western in India and decided to stay.
Telling Giuliani to fuck off before it was cool.
I hate to say this, but other than Sweet Dreams the song, this album was not good. A few of the songs were alright, most were just too weird for me.
I'm not super familiar with Joni Mitchell and I thought this album would be full of slow sad stuff. It was pretty upbeat and enjoyable.
My grandma always had the radio in her bedroom playing super low, just barely perceptible. This brought me back to looking through grandma's jewelry box and napping on her big bed. I put the album on as I fell asleep and slept better than I have in weeks. Obviously, this has nothing to do with how good the album is. Deal with it.
Good music, bad vocals
It was alright until "Battlestar Scralatchtica" Actually, I can't even say that now, cause when I went back to double check the spelling of "Scralatchtica," I noticed I accidentally shuffled the album. So the hope I had from thinking I was almost done is gone. I'm not finishing, cause this is just like listening to any rock station in the 90s.
The Beach Boys are consummate boomers, singing about a mean guy who hurt their little sister in one song, then singing about hurting their girlfriend to make themselves feel better in another. Good times. I know I'm not a fan because of overexposure.
Full disclosure, Yes is my favorite band. I have a tattoo to prove it. I get why people don't like prog. It's long, it's weird, it's pretentious. But Fragile is a great argument against all that. It's fun, it's catchy, it's a little deep. And there is a song for each member to show off their instrumental chops. And, in case you didn't know, every single member on this album is an actual rock god. Even Jon Anderson, the little weirdo.
I dug the fuck out of this.
I'm not a big fan of Electronica, but this wasn't terrible. It wasn't great either. Kind of boring, but still pleasant enough. Good background music. The lyrics were pretty whiny "why don't you love me" stuff.
I will never be high enough to enjoy this.
There might not be any diamonds in the mine, but I got a few stars for ya.
This man is a treasure
Not as great as Tago Mago. It was more ambient, less vocals. Still enjoyed it. Love that I discovered CAN.
Alright. Everyone already knows Elvis, so it's impossible to write a first impression review. I grew up listening to the oldies station at home, so by age 13 I already hated him purely from overexposure. I get Elvis. I get that he brought a new and exciting genre to the white folks. I probably would have been just as nuts for him as most teens in the 50s. But I'm a 40 something in the 20s now, and it's a no from me. I just don't like his voice. I hate the typical Elvis uh-huh thing, and I hate when he's not doing it too. It's seriously lackluster and sometimes just whiney. So thanks for all you did, Elvis, but we've got it from here.
I enjoyed this, but not enough for them to be my new favorite band.
This was... okay? Pretty forgettable. Kind of trying to be Tom Petty. Generic indie.
I'd clean the house to this.
I liked this much more than The Queen is Dead. Depressing lyrics disguised by upbeat music is my jam.
It's good background music, but hard to pay attention to
You don't have to love metal to know that this is a perfect album.
Just all over the place. Country pop, orchestra, 60s psychedelic, in a supposed rock concept album about a ship? Yeah okay. A weird ass album.
Sorry, Kimberly. Noel might be a cunt, but this is a damn good album.
I listened to some of this album then forgot to listen to the rest. It's my birthday though, so I can do what I want. Most of the songs sounded too similar, except for Sickman, which I honestly thought was White Zombie, so that was weird. Actually, that was as far as I got. My friends got me drunk on my birthday, and I just want to see what my next album is.
It's interesting, in the way that if Phish were born and raised in Argentina would be interesting.
Adele is one of the only truly unique talents to come out of the last 20 years and I'll fight you about it.
Super boring for the first hard-core rap album but rap isn't my thing anyway.
There's a man, screaming at you in French. You offer him a lozenge. He accepts, then hops on his carousel and rides off, cackling with the calliope. You shrug, and decide to try a trip through the fun house you suddenly notice. The man is there. The lozenge didn't help. Shit's about to get weird. And that's just the first song.
This was a lovely album.
I was surprised at how much I liked this. Courtney Love doesn't the greatest voice, but with this genre it doesn't matter.
I'm just not a huge fan of Willie's voice.
Definitely weird, but totally enjoyable. Sort of reminded me of the soundtrack for a dystopian action film, which might be what they were actually going for.
Uuuh, Mother was pretty jarring. The rest was the Police. I like the Police.
Lol, no
\"That's not music. That's EDM.\"
Music for people who regret their Nightmare Before Christmas tattoo.
Very 80s
Chaotic ska punk? It was alright
Eh. It was good.
At first I was wondering how they went from what seemed to be a more enjoyable and coherent album to the cum bucket that is White Light/White Heat, but then I hit the halfway point. Andy Warhol just found a bunch of stoned beat poets and threw some guitars and trash can lids at them and said play, didn't he?
Enjoyable enough. Not amazing.
Pleasant but disappointing. Didn't really go anywhere. I do like Paul Simon, but this fell flat.
Eh. Mellow, forgettable.
Pleasant but largely forgettable. Okay voice, good lyrics, a few catchy songs, mostly kind of downers.
Listened twice in a day. Really liked them.
I wish I was the type of floaty cottagecore girl who likes Fiona Apple, but I'm just not. There were a couple of good songs, but most of the album was just too random for me.
Good, but not my thing
If you rhyme violent, misogynistic abs homopobic bullshit, I guess that's art. Sorry bout your childhood, Slim. Get therapy. Oh, but at least this album introduced more people to Dido.
Enjoyed more than I thought I would
Thank God she's not another Beyonce
Not my style but not horrible
I was very pleased at the lack of screaming. I was worried. Very much enjoyed this album
If PJ Harvey grabbed a guitar at a house party I would definitely leave.
Loved this
I almost started to like this, then it started to repeat and got annoying. It was kind of chill, but again, when a song repeats the same thing over and over, I start to hate it.
Queen: Weirder than you thought. And that's a good thing.
Mostly too country for me, but hell yes on the Woody Guthrie lyrics
Good punk album
Great album.
How do we love Bob Dylan so much? It makes no sense.
The stars are cause they can play their instruments. The vocals make me want to wrap my own throat in a warm cocoon made of melted ricolas and never speak again.
Pretty chill, but annoying and repetitive enough for me to not want to listen more.
Somewhere between genius and really high in the sixties. Moog Raga is the sound my sleep paralysis demon makes.
Other than the songs we all k ow it was pretty standard pop rock
I mostly enjoyed this, but these shoegaze/jam/whatever bands need to know that some of us can't take more than 6 bars of the same thing.
I just really don't want to listen to this.
I appreciate TS being able to make fun of herself in Shake It Off, and sort of in Blank Space. There are a few good songs, but mostly just kind of boilerplate narcissistic pop.
A little bit of a lot of genres
Girl, leave him.
I can appreciate Elvis Costello, but I just can't get into him. I've tried. I give up.
Moribund the Burgermeister sounds very much like old Genesis. Excuse Me sounds like it was written with Randy Newman in mind. An interesting but sort of disjointed mix of styles, but nothing I didn't enjoy.
Yeah, okay It was. Fine? Honestly, it was several hours ago. I remember liking it, then just not even noticing it. Towards the end (well, after the end) I thought, oh hey, I like this! Then realized the album had ended and Spotify just picked something it thought I'd like.
Another double album with too much filler. Good, meaningful lyrics, but a lot of the songs were just boring. I'm a little ashamed to say cause Stevie is a legend and all that, but whatever. No mercy. This is an okay album.
I was expecting to hate this, but I did not.
Yeah, pleasant enough. It's always weird to hear a song that was popular growing up, but that I completely forgot about (Babylon)
I dated a guy who made music like this on his Nintendo.
Really enjoyed this. Kind of hard pop punk definitely from the 80s
It was nice, and if I was a 20 year old looking to get laid I'd put this album on.
It's weird, listening to an album you've never listened to, but still know all the songs from. I definitely enjoyed this.
King Crimson is one of my favorite bands. Top 3. Easy Money is one of my favorite songs. Bill Bruford is one of the most brilliant drummers ever, and Robert Fripp is a strange little genius. Lark's Tongue in Aspic Part II is insane live.
This album is wild, if you know when it was made. You can hear the 60s pop, and you can see the punk coming.
When a song says "We can bump uglies if you ain't got your monthly" I'm out.
I enjoyed maybe 3 out of 10 songs. I'm just not into the droning storyteller vibe. If this was a book of poetry it'd be fine, but no, he had to pick up a guitar.
Yeah okay. So, I admire Janelle Monae as an interesting, artistic person, but wasn't expecting to really like this. And there was some I didn't like. But it was pretty alright. Avant-garde, jazzy, and a mostly cohesive album.
This album is kind of all over, but I get that he was influenced by basically everything so... I enjoyed it well enough, and found myself dancing a bit, but who doesn't dance to the Merengue?
I was recommended The Jesus and Mary Chain several years ago and never followed up. After I listened to Darklands I kicked myself over having missed years of listening to this band. Having listened to their second album first, I was glad to see that their first was just as good, with them having fully fledged out their sound and not needing to go through a growing pain period.
This album vacillates wildy between, "yeah, I can dig this" and "Oh no, what are you doing. Often in the same song. If you know anything about music in the late 60s, you already know what this album sounds like.
I'm just gonna say that I probably agree with everything these guys are saying, but I don't really need it rapped at me for an hour.
I can handle this in small doses, and only if it can skip past the repetitive bits.
I was kind of disappointed. Didn't rock as hard as I thought it would.
I did not expect to like this, was pleasantly surprised. I even listened twice.
I wonder how I'd feel about this if I had never heard them before. And also if my workplace didn't play a disco-heavy 70s station all the time. Were they groundbreaking? No idea. Are they fun? Sure. Will I ever choose to listen to them again? Nope.
If this was recorded in 1963 it'd be great. Instead, it was made 15 years later and just sounds kind of sad and tired.
When I listen to rap lyrics I usually have three thoughts. 1) yeah, I guess I agree, the system sucks. 2) gross, no one needs to hear about this. And 3) why are you writing a song about this? This album was way more 1 that 2 and 3, and had the bonus of being musically competent.
The "1" on the on the cover art is totally a dick tip. I've just never been able to get into Prince. He's enjoyable enough. He has his own sound, which I always appreciate, but there's just something that turns me off. That said, I don't hate it, and I get why it's on the list.
So, yesterday I had 1999 by Prince. I don't really care for Prince. I do love David Bowie, however, and upon listening to Young Americans, I felt that 1999 took a lot of influence from Bowie. I don't know how to feel about this. Good album, but not my favorite of his.
4 stars, then minus one because Eric Clapton's a racist piece of shit who raped his wife.
Eh. It's Dylan, you know what you're getting. His voice ain't great, some of the songs are. This album is rather bluesy. Highlands is 16 minutes of boring storytelling and the same guitar over and over
Good, inoffensive, background music. But not groundbreaking or anything.
I really did not enjoy this, with the exception of Eternal Life. I would have liked Hallelujah, but at this point in time, everyone has done Hallelujah. I mean I do like it, but this dude didn't even write it.
I started each song. I did not finish each song.
I had no idea what to expect with these guys. I've heard of them, but had no clue what genre they are. I was pleasantly surprised! I like them. Modern, but soulful Good stuff
It's like... They're almost good. The elements are there. There's egg, sugar, and flour, but it's not a cake. Close, but no cake.
I wonder why The Verve never made it further.
I hope everyone knows these are mostly just notes for the future me. I liked this. Listen again.
All good stuff, except for Suicide. Too long, too repetitive.
Sigur Rós is one of those bands where I need to take a deep breath and sigh before explaining my feelings. I tried to get into them a long time ago, but as that was pre-streaming, and I was a poor student, I only ever bought one album. I don't know man. They're not really a band you can just have in a playlist with the other normal bands. They're a sit down, shut up, and listen band. They're a purebred show dog watching the shelter mutts from the shade. (I get that dogs are dogs, I just couldn't think of anything else) This album was 30 minutes of me wondering how to say \"God, I'm depressed\" in Icelandic, and 30 minutes of me thinking maybe the world is beautiful after all, and knowing better than to look up the translations (having learned my lesson from the first few I looked up). The music is very beautiful, the vocals are high and breathy, which is off-putting to me. Some songs felt like a dude who was talking too close to my face. I told my listening buddy that I almost feel bad for not liking non-English music, but at the same time, English might ruin this. My favorite song from the album, Starálfur, is about an elf. I can't take that seriously. I really don't know if I'm going to listen more. I might owe it to whomever originally suggested them to 19 year old me to try again. Maybe they were right.
For whatever reason, I'm not able to listen to this album. Which is great, cause I didn't want to. How does she have 4 albums on this list?
SoaD gives me bad memories
Two good songs and some screaming.
I honestly don't even know what to say about this. Is it serious? I guess it doesn't matter, cause obviously music can be fun. I think it should be fun. But what even is this album? It's very weird.
Every single song on this album is a five.
I like her voice, kind of basic beats, pretty chill though.
I remember seeing Jenna Elfman on a late night show once. The host mentioned that she used to be a backup dancer for ZZ Top and asked if she'd do a little dance. The band leader asked what song they should play, and she replied that it doesn't matter, the dance is basically the same for all of them.
Yeah okay. I guess I can't claim Primus and Ween among my favorites if I can't listen to this. It's not terrible, don't get scared away by other reviews.
I used to really like Bob Dylan, but I also used to smoke a lot of pot.
I don't dislike it, I just don't see the point of it
Needs to be longer
Hard pass. Fuck this guy.
Pretty good. Only knew him from Wishing Well previously. Beautiful voice.
Fire and Rain is a classic. The rest is just nice.
Way more county than rock. Its okay.
3 stars for being a decent rock album, plus 1 having the best song for DJs to play when they needed to have a shit.
Before we knew the sex of our first baby I suggested naming it Deacon, if it was a boy, cause I heard Deacon Blues on the radio. We ended up with a girl, and named her Josie. But not after the Steely Dan song, cause I'm pretty sure that's about a hooker. It's fun to tell her she's named after a song about a hooker though. Anyway, love Steely Dan. Even though Steely Dan is named after a dildo.
Unremarkable but pleasant
I hate to admit that I don't like many female singers. But I liked Liz. She's not a great singer, but her lyrics are dirty and raw and not lovely dovey shit.
I'm on some medications that are messing with my brain right now. I don't know if this was a bad time to listen to this album, or the perfect time. I have actually listened to this album many times before though. Astronomy Domine is one of the best prog compositions of all time.
Another one I couldn't finish. It gets a 2, cause I've heard worse.
Pleasant background music
Kind of all over the place, but I enjoyed
"We Will Fall" kind of ruined the vibe, but solid
Not a single bad song
I did not appreciate this enough at 13, but damn if it isn't a solid album.
Dirty Hippie Breakdown: The Musical I could pick out a song or two, or fragment that's listenable, but this is just a mess. I feel bad saying that, cause dude had some shit going on, but we all have our moments, that doesn't mean they should be recorded.
This isn't my thing, but I didn't hate it. Upbeat, good mood music, but kind of too much to listen to all at once.
I did not enjoy this, but I could have enjoyed it less
I get why people like this type of music, and I liked some of the songs, but it's just not in my personality to like pretty, sad, slightly whiny, songs.
As soon as I say I don't like pretty, sad, slightly whiny songs I find some pretty, sad, slightly whiny songs to like. But they weren't all that way, which helps! I really liked this, I'll definitely listen again and listen to more of his work. Also, I totally called it when I thought spotify would pick Nick Drake to play after this album finished.
Eh. I guess I don't get Radiohead. I probably would have loved them 20 years ago. Wait, when did this come out? Anyway, I don't hate them. But whatever.
If we came upon a drunk Londoner singing in the gutter outside a pub at midnight and you told me that was Billy Bragg, I would not question you.
I don't want to know a world without CCR.
Not as bad as most things labeled as electronic, but almost engineered to annoy me. Weird vocals, but pleasant music. I only skipped two songs!
The second half is way better
Gives me hope for new music. Very chill and enjoyable
Crazy how these white English boys made a record that's 70 percent rhythym and blues covers and they're somehow the visionaries.
Life on Mars? is one of my top 5 Bowie songs. Filll Your Heart was real weird.
Musically, it was great. Lyrically and vocally? Wtaf. The first third of the album I spent wondering why the dude didn't just sing, then I found out that he can sing, just not well. Then the rest of the album I was nostalgic for the one song that was sung. Great instrumentals with random, mushmouth, stream-of-consciousness ramblings laid over.
Dolly has a lovely voice, and clever, occasionally funny lyrics. She's a great storyteller. I don't really care for country music, except when it's done well, like this.
I'm not going to deny her talent, but she's too much like a slightly normal Kate Bush. And we all know how I feel about Kate Bush. I'm giving her a 3 just because she's not Kate Bush.
Starting at \"This Party\" I listened for a minute or two and ended up skipping the rest. The first half is tolerable. But I hate electronica.
Why are there so many talented terrible people?
This band is entirely new to me. Pleasantly surprised.
Oh my god, this album is boring. 19 boring songs, and Tusk. Wtf. Boring, boring, less boring, boring, MARCHING BAND. Before today, if you asked me if I liked Fleetwood Mac, I would have said a resounding yes. Now I'd have to say "Mostly"
Not an album I'd pick, but interesting
Eh. Just doesn't do it for me. I don't like it, but I don't hate it.
I could hear how influential this group was. I kept getting snippets of stuff that reminded me of other stuff. It kind of delved into religious bullshit at one point, so that's a negative, but it was generally okay and I can see why it's on the list.
Frank Zappa was the master of whatever the hell it was he was doing.
I forgot how good this album is. I first listened to it when I was about 19, and it was almost too weird. A few years later I could appreciate it more. Now I'm just shaking my head at my younger self for not loving it immediately.
I guess once you're famous they let you do anything. Like a boring vanity project.
Loud and angry and a bit silly. It's punk for sure.
I feel like I would enjoy this live, but at 10 am, by myself, drinking coffee, I didn't really appreciate listening to that girl simulate an orgasm so much.
Electronica is in my bottom 5 genres, but this was palatable. I won't listen to it again, but I did manage to listen to it. Some of it was pretty.
Eh
Can a band be *too* mellow?
This album did not need to as long as it is. Over half of the songs could have been cut and this would have basically been a greatest hits. I put off listening to this album because I rarely have 2 hours together to dedicate to one album. I chose the day I drove two hours to the airport. It was early morning, dark, and very foggy. Most of the songs made my drive worse. Usually I like driving music that keeps me on the road, not songs that make me want to drive off of it. I'm conflicted about what my rating should be. I'm going to round up from a 3.5. It's mostly good. I did get sick of a few tracks before they were over, and a lot of them sound very similar. And Billy Corgan's voice... But the hits are the hits. They're good.
Not nearly as good as Dookie. Unnecessary in this list.
I almost gave this a 3, but then got to the end and yeah, no. This album had no idea what it was, or what direction it wanted to go.
Folk country that is funny, sad, and political so at once. Someone needs to remind new country that their flag decals won't get them into heaven anymore.
I usually only give 4s to albums I'll listen to again. I don't particularly like this, but I cannot deny its cultural impact and the influence it had at the time of release, so there you go.
I enjoyed maybe 40 percent of this. But the 60 percent I did not enjoy I *really* did not enjoy. So like... 0--no like---------|--like----------10
No
Like pleasant hotel lobby music, or a Subaru commercial. Unoffensive and very not groundbreaking. I will immediately forget this. 2.5 but rounding up cause I didn't hate it.
Elvis Costello kind of gets on my nerves, but not today I guess.
I enjoyed the hell out of this album!
The singer's voice is even more grating than the music.
I honestly still don't know if I like jazz. It's fine. Enjoyable enough, but it becomes a bit of a slog if I listen to too much.
Mostly not terrible
I listened to this twice. The first time I didn't like it at first, then it grew on me. The second time, I liked it less as I listened more. I don't know what to take away from that.
If I randomly saw this band at a local bar I'd probably see them again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
Yeah okay. Despite having heard the two singles on this album more than my own mother's voice it's decent.
Every song belongs in a different bad 80s movie.
Every song was great, but after reading the other reviews, I guess I need to go listen to Wire.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Good vocalist, engaging music.
I totally get why people like Reggae. I never was into it, but it's petty enjoyable. I could see myself listening to this again.
Very much like a ton of music from this Era.
Booooooooring
I've heard worse. No idea how this band got 2 albums on the list. Looking at the entry in the book, this album is only 21 minutes and six songs long. Don't make the same mistake as me and listen to the 2 hour deluxe edition.
Pretty slow and sad. Not my thing, but that being said, Ray Charles was a truly unique talent
Started okay, and weird, ended just sad.
So weird, like dude just watched a bunch of b-rate soaps and westerns and decided to write their theme songs
Private Life could have been 4 minutes shorter
The only song I liked was The Seed 2.0, and that was mostly because the music reminded me of the intro to Flight of the Conchords. Most of this was an unpleasant chore to listen to.
Oooooh my god, I hated every second I could handle. Did not finish.
Mostly great, except for the weird alien skit and Mind Gardens. My Back Pages is one of my favorite songs
Eeeeh
Amazing to see how many artists found huge success with her work. She must have been a captivating performer.
Fucking terrible
Short and to the point, like group sex should be. Wait, no...
This is that late 90s/2000s sort of pop prog that I remember, but never got super into, probably because I lived in a small town and this stuff wasn't on the radio. I wish I had, but now I get to, so it's all good. This type of music feels kind running through a field with all your friends.
After reading the description, I wasn't too thrilled about this. Then the first half wasn't what I was expecting. Way more rock, less Celtic folk. The second half, however, was what I was expecting. I wasn't a fan of the second half.
Picked up towards the end, but mostly pretty boring country rock. Didn't hate it, won't remember it.
Excellent music, angsty 6th grade lyrics
3 great songs, 6 kind of boring nothing songs.
*fart noises*
An interesting mix of shanties and 60s style rock.
Wow, apparently electronica can be boring *and* terrible
Like shopping at a fancy department store
More pretty sad music. Not my thing.
Equate brand rock
Perfect
You Ain't Going Nowhere is a great song, the rest is too country for me. But not bad country, so that's something.
Kind of lackluster
This was really hit or miss for me. Half I enjoyed, half was too county.
Man, I would have loved the 60s
In my head it's only 3.5 because I had to listen to Kate Bush
A 45 minute jam session capped off by a country classic. Overall I enjoyed it.
Great album, I loved hearing Johnny's banter.
Jurassic 5 is the band I mention when I tell people I don't hate all rap.
This is the most aptly named album ever. If I ever host an orgy this is the only playlist I need.
Respect, but not for me
Is this considered a rock opera or concept album? I was pretty surprised by how good it was, and how much I enjoyed it.
I must be in a weird mood, cause I actually enjoyed this.
Overall, I didn't enjoy this. I did get into the last track, but I outright hated 2 & 3. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could, so I'm rounding up today
This was... weird
A fun album, I can see why it was included.
I liked this for the most part, but I don't like spoken word stuff, and it was about a third of it.
At first I wondered how this band made it out of the garage. It got better, except for Elixir is Zog, which I skipped due to the screaming. The rest were all good enough songs, but it seemed like they never figured out what kind of band they were.
Jesus Christ, this was boring. So boring. My brain is so sluggish I can't even think of a better word for boring.
There is nothing you can say that will convince me that this is good music. Even Björk herself sings in a way that sounds like she's forcing it out, like she also doesn't want to hear herself sing.
Not nearly as good as their next album "Forever Changes" but pretty okay.
This is a solid album, but not my genre. And a little too horny. I'm not a fan of listening to people describe how they like their sexual encounters, unless I'm going to be an active participant. Even then I probably giggle too much.
I really enjoyed this, way more than I thought I would. (Even though my daughter said it sounded like a middle school band tuning up) Anyway, you should read this dude's Wikipedia entry, it's wild.
I was going to say that I didn't get the hate or the love this album (or the band in general) gets, but then I hit the cover of Just Like Heaven that gets CUT OFF BEFORE THE END. But really, it's just a pretty average indie rock band with some experimentation.
I did not enjoy this but I couldn't stop listening. It was manic and weird and unpredictable.
Honestly, boring and preachy.
At least this one is listenable.
All of these songs sounded the same.
I'm glad jazz exists. It's how I can tell which bookstores are too good for me.
What a weird mixed bag. I liked the first 3 songs, then it veered into skit territory, straight Indian music, and some droning bullshit, then a woman took over, thank God for that, and then they started rapping. Wrap it up with a cover of Norwegian Wood. 4/10
I can handle jazz, but this was a lot of jazz. Still, good album, good listening.
I guess I got the abridged version at 45 minutes. I probably could have handled 3 hours. Ella Fitzgerald was a treasure.
Will listen again
Imagine having this voice, and range choosing to do this with it.
It's giving depressed James Bond lounge singer.
Not for me
I was intrigued, as (like most people) I only know Karma Chameleon. I'm not going to say I really enjoyed this album, but I certainly didn't hate it, and never felt like skipping any songs. It was quintessential 80s, but never hyper.
I like it, but I feel like a solo album shouldn't sound so much like the original band.
Did not enjoy
Boring. Christ.
An earlier review was right. This is hold music.
I enjoyed this but it isn't groundbreaking. It's chill
Triiiiiiiite
I should pay attention to lyrics now, but I ain't a literary critic
Mix of styles, but good.
More songs about how much landlords fucking suck, please.
The very mixed reviews scared me, but I liked this overall. I did skip the first song halfway through, and that was because of my biggest complaint , the vocalist. Just not a great voice. But I do realize that this is an extremely personal album and no one else could have sang it. So I forgive them.
What a weird guy Jim Morrison was. We share a birthday.
It gets pretty weird on the second disc, but that's what prog is about.
Just because it's weird doesn't mean it's good
Eeh
One long yell
There were brief flashes where I thought this might redeem itself but they were all killed off pretty quick.
Could use less of Hayes talking about himself
My angrier friends loved this when we were in middle school, even if they didn't yet understand why.
This album has its moments, and I enjoyed it more than their first, but not for long.
If you ignore the weird musical redface of Indian Sunset....
The Earth is doomed and Jamiroquai is here to help you dance about it.
Eh
It wears on you a bit. But
Oh my god, I did it. I finished this album on the very day it was assigned. Okay. So it's not terrible, but I heard 69 songs and zero reasons for it to be on this list. It's a gimmick album. If a painter said "I'm gonna do 69 paintings in two days" and they were all just two or three swipes with a roller brush, would it be celebrated? Probably, actually, the art world is weird. Some of the songs were good, but never fleshed out enough. And none of them were particularly catchy. One or two might've made it on a playlist of mine, but I'll never go back and try to figure out which ones. Anyway, good for us all, for slogging through. I really wish I had liked it more.
If I could pick one album to erase from my memory just so I could experience it again for the first time, it would be Close to the Edge.
We get it, you have a scary voice, you play fast, you hate god.
This album smacks of the 60s. So it's not super groundbreaking anymore in the 80s. Still good though.
So yeah. It was hip hop plus.
Oh man, this is hard. I love David Byrne and the Talking Heads. I am historically... intolerant of Brian Eno's solo work. (Break for listening) So I actually liked this, mostly. It really smacked of Remain in Light, which is my least favorite TH album, but I still like it. I guess Brian Eno needs other people as much as they need him.
I always feel like I *should* like Sonic Youth, but I just can't. I liked Sugar Kane well enough, but the rest of the songs were either just okay, or just bad.
This band had no idea what they wanted to sound like and just figured they'd try it all. No necessarily bad songs, but I kept thinking it was other bands.
Upbeat songs about nothing deep are my jam
I know it's the first metal album. But I'm still going with "rudimentary, with laughably simple lyrics"
If bland corporate coffee shops were a thing in the 70s this it what they'd be playing
