I haven't really listened to Sam Cooke before, so don't know how this compares to the studio versions. As a live recording, this is pretty good. The way you can hear the crowd throughout, and you can tell they were just having a ball. You can imagine what it would have been like to be there. Sam has a strong, raspy kind of voice, well suited to this kind of music. The songs did get a bit "samey" for me, but all clipped along at a nice pace and kept the part-vibe going.
I remember my parents had this album, but I haven't really listened to it before. The way the western sensibilities merged with the African stylings really worked. I really like some of the guitar work - it was quite unique, or at least as far as I've heard. Paul Simon is really quite a gifted lyricist - there were some quite nice lines in there. The title track was my favourite. I've heard "you can call me al" to many times to enjoy that one.
not what i expected. i think I had them mixed up in my head with the band "Boston". a lot of nice work on the horns, and some pretty big guitar freakouts. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. my favourite track was the final track, "Liberation" which was wa big guitar freakout before coming together at the end.
I had a copy of this album already, but haven't listened in a while. It's a pretty heavy album - brutal really with all the sounds they through at you and pretty relentless. There is quite a contrast between Chuck D's political commentary and Flavor Flav style
I've heard this one so many times before, I don't know if I even need to listen to it for this project, or even need to write any listening notes
Not really for me. I can appreciate the harmonizing and complexity though.
I've listened to and enjoyed their "Brit-pop" albums, but hadn't heard this one before. I think I was put off by "Song No. 2" which was really over played. There were some nice songs on this one, and I really liked some of the guitar work
I really liked this album. I have a copy and have listened to it a few times before. It reminds me in feel of the musician "Panda Bear" but with quite different instrumentation. I always thought the singer was male, but was surprised on checking wikipedia that they are a duo with a woman singer.
this was OK as background music, but not really my thing. i did find my head nodding a long now and then
wow - I've heard this before but never really appreciated. the way his vocals soar is just amazing. great album
I liked some of the riffing but overall not really for me
I had heard this one before and was happy to see it as the selection for the day. I really like this one. I was surprised to see some of the other reviews - a lot of people really hate this one. I guess his voice is kind of love it or hate it.
i don't really get why this is always cited as such an important album.
great album. Breakdown, Anything That's Rock and Roll and American Girl are standouts
nice to see an album from an NZ band, but I've heard most of the tracks too many times on radio and such to enjoy this. I was surprised by how dark some of the lyrics were
insipid
Great album. Blister in the sun is so overplayed, and I've heard it so many times, I can't listen to it any more, so I skipped it
This album came out when I was a teenager, and was starting to form my own tastes in music, so it is quite an important album for me and hard to rate it objectively.
a bit boring
dreck
High-concept album. A lot of falsetto. Quite interesting, but not really my thing
I liked this one more than I thought I would
Too much orchestration - not enough fingerpicking
this one took me back. I was never a big fan of this album, and I forgot how grating his voice was, but all in all, I enjoyed it -there are some really good songs on this, even if it is a bit over long.
This is something special
a bit samey for me
amazing
I thought I would like it when it started, but it turns out it was a bit overdone and boring
i liked it more than I thought i would. the funk guitar and bass was nice
I'm not really a Rolling Stones fan, but have to admit, this is a great record.
could hardly finish it
this one i really enjoyed
boring
This one was a surprise. I'd heard of her before, but not sure what I was expecting, but not his. I really enjoyed this one - she has an amazing voice. Stand out tracks for me were Down to Zero and Love and Affection.
a bit bland for my liking
boring and generic
a bit generic and boring
this one takes me back. I was a teen when it came out, so didn't really understand their message on anything but a superficial level, but definitely felt it.
I think this album was a bit inconsistent. There wer some great tracks, but some average ones as well.
boring
i saved this one until xmas. it was ok as far as xmas albums go.
great album - not sure how I'd missed this one in the past
I have heard this one many times before. This is a classic album and of course if ends up on this list. I know people hate his voice and harmonica playing, but since when do you need a pleasant singing voice to make great and important music?
Great Album. RIP David Berman
i think this is an amazing album.
so cool
I liked this. Although on a surface level, it seems pretty straight ahead and simple, there was a surprising level of depth.,
bit boring for me
funky
amazing
blast from the past - but a great album
liked this more than i thought I would. surprised that was the 2nd or 3rd best selling album of all time
drivel
Great album. I like the Neil Young songs the best
I kind of liked this one. Not my usual thing, but obviously a great live band
horrible and almost unlistenable but also brilliant
not really my thing, so i listened while working, and found it good background music for programming to
Was alright - I did end up with "Stand" really stuck in my head though
how can you really rate this album?
By some coincidence, I actually listened to this album earlier in the day before I revealed today's album. Not my favourite Smith's album though
great album
kind of stupid but I liked it
kind of stupid. kind of fun
I liked this more than I thought I would.
i grew up with this album
I liked this more than I expected. I think I had them mixed up with "Dr Hook" in my head, so went in with low expectations
very pleasant
boring
couldn't finish it
i listened to this a lot in my teens. It still holds up
this takes me back.
i liked this more than I thought i would
kind of generic and boring - reminded me too much of other bands
I haven't really given these guys a chance before - not sure why. I really liked this one.
From the first few opening notes I thought this wouldn't be for me - but I ended up liking it
a little bit one note
boring and forgettable
one song from this album I remember hearing at the end of a Sopranos episode and I liked it so much I had to shazaam it and was surprised to find it was bruce. i don't really like bruce springsteen so was surprised by this album - the sparse voice+guitar+occasional harmonica really works.
great stuff
I heard the Dennis Wilson one a few days earlier, and wasn't impressed, but this one was great. I've heard of it (of course) but had never given it a listen before
ok as background music
one of my favourite albums from my formative years. classic
boring
not heard this one before, but really enjoyed it - some great stuff
I love this album - there is something about the quavery voice and ponderous melodies that i think is amazing. i can see why some people would hate it though.
ok as far as it goes, but this kind of thing is really not for me
not my favourite Tom Waits, but there is still some great stuff
intense
I'm not here. This isn't happening.
i love these guys
boring
what a racket
when I was listening to it, my wife came in and gave me a wtf look
I remember my mum used to listen to this album, so some of the songs were familiar but long forgotten. I actually really enjoyed this one.
there's some great stuff, and is a very nice recording, but a bit too much harmonica.
