John Lennon
2/5
Feeling generous giving this album a 2 star review. It felt like it was a project and not a piece of art. You can feel outside influences coming into the lyrics.
Understanding that Lennon probably wanted to make a grand statement exiting the Beatles... This fell short of connecting to an audience that he could have reached on a higher scale.
To me this album was written to send a message of independence from the Beatles, and establish himself as a voice on his own, but fell short of being songs you could relate to and play on repeat.

Grateful Dead
5/5
This is my favorite album by my favorite band.
I remember listening to it for the first time in college. I'd heard some of the songs previously, but never knew it had such a country/Americana sound to it. It was great listening to it yesterday and still enjoying it as much as day 1.

Pixies

This was ok but not enough to really grab my attention. I like Pixies yes I do, but this one is just meh.

Black Sabbath

Shaking my head at all the five star reviews. There's not much great about this album. I was an Ozzy fan back in the day, but this falls short of greatness and just a smidgen better than cow poo. Heavy sound but a lot of senseless noise with no direction.

The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
Some of the songs are great...but some of them I can't really relate to? The radio airplay songs seemed to have been standouts
Curtis Mayfield
2/5
Wow just like listening to the classic soundtracks from the 70s! Great voice and musicians. Not an every day listener for me...but a great look back at the quintessential 70s sound.
CHIC
3/5
LeFreak has to be one of the best disco songs ever. But that being said...it's disco. 😂
Some of the other songs just don't grab you and say play me again. With multiple vocalists on this record it's hard to get to know the group's true identity.
But ahh freak out saves the day and pushes this from a two to a three star record. I found myself dancing at my desk on the two opening tracks, then being bored and asking myself when is lunch?
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
This album has great moments for me that are very fun to listen to, but also some shrieks from the overblown distortion and breathy, whispering vocals.
I heard one of my favorite NY Crazy Horse songs the other day...Powder Finger. This album seems like some of the Crazy Horse stuff high on meth. I love grandpa grunge's melodies...but some of these songs are missing that feel and just seem like "noise". Wooly Bully...distorted lyrics drew people in. Here you have an album full of that and it gets tiring.
However...I've always loved Today and will stop anytime I am channel surfing to listen to it.
Also Disarm was a standout unlike the rest on this album...and kind of a breakthrough hit for them. Going with a solid 3 here...if Billy would just sing vs try to do whatever he does I would go 4.
Daft Punk
4/5
So this was a great discovery sitting in my office yesterday.
I felt like that if I was in a club with a hot girl, I could actually dance to this music, and dance well. Thats obviously unrealistic, but the music transported me there. Great beats and sound...ultimate headphone experience. Solid album top to bottom. Probably only one song I felt like was "filler". Was shocked after reading they almost didn't release this as an album. Would have been a five star if Up all night to get lucky was on here.
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
I am giving this album a good review, but totally bummed there are no weekend albums. I'm going to be 80 by the time this is over and have hearing loss.
MK is a great artist and has a unique sound. This music puts you into a hypnotic smooth infectious groove. I will continue to give this one a listen.
5/5
One of the best albums of all time, but still not my fav Beatles album. Headphone psychedelic masterpiece!
Just goes to show that LSD can make you score an even bigger hit, pun intended!
Prob the greatest, most recognizable album cover ever tho!
Cheap Trick
3/5
So I've never known what album the live version of I want you to want me came out on. I always thought that the recording sounded different than other live versions of albums made at that time. You have to give props to the audience's enthusiasm and screaming.
Couple of classic rock classics in here, but overall the songs seem to mesh together and not keep you interested.
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
This album was Bantha fodder.
Men at work meets Devo and got invaded by a flock of seagulls. I was thinking about 1980 and what was released around that time, and one of the songs was like something from the Wall that never made it past the sound room. Sorry exploding teardrop dudes.
John Coltrane
3/5
I've never been into jazz but can see why this would be an important album for that genre.
AC/DC
5/5
I'm biased. You either love or hate the best band in all the land at two chord riffs.
Memories of being in the back seat of a 76 Cutlass with this album as the soundtrack.
Electrifying guitars from the Youngs and the best and last album of the Bon Scott era.
Listening to Night Prowler made me do bad things too!!🤣🤘😈🔥🔥
Crosby, Stills & Nash
4/5
Do do do doot doot duh Doo Doo dut. Greatest lyrics ever on Suite Judy blue eyes!
This album emerged as the staple for 70s harmonies and the Laurel Canyon sound.
R.E.M.
4/5
One of the best sounding REM albums and three huge singles.
Signature REM sound captured.
Milton Nascimento

I couldn't struggle through this entire album....I tried....
I would rather get a root canal.
Robert Wyatt
1/5
I'm like, what the actual fuck? This made me have bad acid flashbacks. Talk about trash.
Bill Callahan
1/5
Spoken word type of stuff isn't my jam. I'm sorry couldn't listen to all this album. I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow and want to crank some Quiet Riot or Twisted Sister!
The Strokes
3/5
I couldn't move the left side of my body after listening to this album, but it was catchy and had a feel good beat the kids are sure to love.
Deep Purple
3/5
Jon Lord is one badass keyboard player. Got to see their original lineup in 1988. Great show and at the time wasn't a big fan.
This is "I'm on LSD playing early heavy metal at its finest.
Tina Turner
4/5
What a memorable album that defined an era. Classic 80s powerhouse diva right here.
The Stooges
3/5
This isn't my jam but can see why kids would have like this kind of raw straight ahead punk in your face kinda stuff when it came out.
Lauryn Hill
4/5
It has a beat you can dance to.
doo wop is one of my fav all time grooves, but the rest of the album for me doesn't reach that level. In any case, 3.5 isn't available so going with 4.
Adele
4/5
I absolutely love the sound of this woman's voice. She could truly sing the phone book and sell albums. Right as Rain is a favorite for me from her early stuff...some of these tracks seem forced and over the top. I cringe at the almost screaming on Hello...but enjoyed some of the softer vocals where she sounds vulnerable. Adele my love you don't have to be over the top to be fabulous. Still great performances here, but would love to hear better song selections.
Cat Stevens
4/5
I'm my early teens I didn't find this type of soft acoustic melody driven music very appealing. However l, every time you heard this voice it had something that pulled you in. Not the greatest voice by any means, but kind of haunting. You truly believe the singer owns the song and lyrics.
U2
5/5
The edge makes a shrieking burning sound that no other guitarist can replicate. True signature U2 sound on this album.
A band that had truly found their sound and match the musical intensity with lyrics that identified with relevant issues of the time.
Fairport Convention
3/5
I felt like a Viking listening to this. Imagine this is what Robert Plant listens to when he has time on his hands. Also felt like the soundtrack to the old Excalibur movie.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
I needed a nice upbeat album to listen to today. The other Elvis hit the spot. I find it very interesting that one of the best songs on the album didn't make the UK version. I hope that no elephants were harmed during the making of this album. ✌️ 🐘
The xx
4/5
Never knew anything about this band or their album. I was surprised and enjoyed it. Will give it another listen for sure.
Nick Drake
1/5
This is music you have to be in the mood to listen to. There is a time for stripped down acoustic music, but this didn't grab me as anything spectacular. The title track is ok, but the rest of the album to me was more of the same but less appealing.
Neneh Cherry
2/5
Some 80s music sounds timeless today, but a lot of it doesn't. Unfortunately for me this fits the latter. Struggled to get through this one.
Madonna
4/5
I'm all out of creative things to say today & late for the gym. Obviously I had heard some of these songs back in the day ...but never the full album. I read that Madonna had a lot more songwriting input on this album and Prince was involved. Also this was before she was corrupted by Dennis Rodman so solid four stars😂
The Clash
4/5
Train in Vain...best song ever that doesn't have the title in the lyrics!
I never knew it was actually a hidden song at the end of the album and a late addition. One of my favs of all time.
If you thought the Clash was a one trick pony...listen to this album. The version I listened to online was a vinyl rip. Made it sound even better! Timeless classic! Great songwriting, vocals, spot on playing.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
I'm sure as far as crooner albums go...this one takes the cake. Just another reason for making whoopie, lyrics ahead of their time for sure!❤️😂✌️
Pere Ubu
1/5
This album was so horrible even my dog was mad that I was playing it. She didn't like the shrieking horns. 0.5 stars should be an option.
Arcade Fire
2/5
For me, I can't get past the vocalist. His sound is just not for me. I wanted to give them a chance and I remember waiting up to watch them on SNL. So I've tried!!
The Kinks
4/5
What a treat to hear after yesterday's debacle.
Loved this album...I like to think I'm up on rock n roll trivia...but had no idea the Kinks went back to the mid 60s. This album sounded well ahead of it's time.
Great lyrics and songs that made you feel good...and quirky enough to question them!
Willie Nelson
5/5
What a great piece of American history!! Poetic classic Americana country.
Hands on the Wheel brought me to my knees. I found myself in you Willie!! ❤️
Michael Jackson
5/5
Greatest album of the '80s probably. Not much filler here at all except maybe the carousel song 🤣.
This album forever changed music videos and defined an era.
Vincent Price Eddie Van Halen and Paul McCartney all appeared on what chart-topping '80s album?
The Flying Burrito Brothers
2/5
Hard to stay focused on these songs, they were just meh.
Probably a reason I had never heard it before.
Minor Threat
2/5
I'm not a punk efficianado by any means, but Sid & Nancy freaked me out enough as a child to discover the Sex Pistols at the ripe age of 14. Fast forward many years later and appreciating yacht rock more and more, I found this a bit wreckless and hard to listen to. The first couple of songs anyway. But then I appreciated the music the more I listened. But the lead vocals were horrendous. It's like the kids on the block were all afraid to sing and they got drunk uncle Larry to sit in with the band. The best song for me was when they were trying almost spoken word.
Coldplay
4/5
This was when I liked Cold Play!
Some memorable songs and a definitive, trippy alternative sound. Early Coldplay when you thought they had a chance at great things but then jumped the shark later.
The Hives
3/5
This punk album was much easier to listen to. If I wanted to get drunk and break stuff, this is what I would choose. Solid 3.5.
I feel itchy though.
George Michael
5/5
Lifetime achievement for this man! Easy 5 stars
Laibach
1/5
Ummm kay no thanks
0.23 stars
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
Very surprised by the accolades that this album receives in many of the prominent music publications. Jerry has great stage presence and electric energy, but when it comes down to a critical review this album is not recorded well. I did find myself dancing my seat a couple times but most of the time it was irritating how loud the piano was.
Happy Mondays
3/5
Seemed like this album might have been recorded in different methods/locations. First half was kind of boring, but there were a couple standouts on the back half that were much more pleasing to listen to and the vocals were solid. Overall meh, maybe in the 900's as far as rankings out of 1000 albums.
The Adverts
3/5
So this could have been such a much better album with a professional engineer and recording! I think they were probably on a low budget. But what do I know. I hope those people don't hunt me down for revenge.
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
Not sure how to rate this one because it's wrong on so many levels, but has some songs that I like.
With rhymes like jail & Patti LaBelle...you can't go wrong?!
Pimping ain't easy, but it sure is fun!
Alice Cooper

3.653
One of the greatest album sleeves ever.
Drank beer at my neighbor's when I was 17 to this one.
Diverse sounding album for 1972. Mom played it while I rocked in my cradle.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
Relaxing music and a good stress reliever! I especially enjoyed the vocal range of the singer! 3.5
The Stranglers
2/5
Didn't need all the synths. Sloppy vocals and poor quality recording. Other than that I loved it.
Electric Light Orchestra
3/5
So Jeff Lynn was involved in a lot of really great collaborations and some of my favorite albums of all time... But unfortunately for me electric Light orchestra never did it for me. I could never really put my finger on it but it was just their overall sound. Maybe because Don't bring me down was overplayed on the radio. Giving him a 2.68 rounded up to 3 because he is a Wilbury.
Dinosaur Jr.
1/5
Annoying is being nice.
Pulp
3/5
I'm always intrigued by British and US artists... And how they break into each other's charts.
Some are huge hits in their own countries...some in both.
Very surprised to see how this album was a huge success in GB but not here. Maybe because grunge and garage rock were so huge at this point in time? This album has more of an 80s British sound to me.
I thought it was ok, but nothing was pulling me in saying it was great. It was my first time hearing it or anything about this band. Nothing here telling me to pull it off the shelf again.
Pixies
2/5
Not everyone can write songs like Lennon & McCartney...
And it shows
ABBA
2/5
I thought that I liked Abba as a kid...don't know what I was thinking.
Simply Red
2/5
Good morning and welcome to my review of simply red's debut album. I avoided this song like the plague when it was released.
I probably would have walked the plank blindfolded versus listening to this album if I had to.
Yesterday listening to its entirety was one of the toughest things I've done in life. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Considering the time it was released I was only 14 years old and going through the change entering manhood. I was listening to ratt motley Crue and twisted sister.
Heaven 17
2/5
Good morning and welcome to " it's time for me to sound like an intellectual music critic from my flat in Manhattan." On today's show we have a forgotten tale of the1980's weirdness invasion.
Take the strange out of Human League, zap it through the easy bake oven ,sprinkle on some Simon sounding robot beats...and you get a song banned by the BBC. Probably the only reason this album made the list. This group and sound had potential, but they leave no lasting legacy from the 80s British pop invasion.
Beatles
5/5
Imagine having a band still in its infancy, and having a better songbook than 95% of the music released for the next 59 years. This isn't the best Beatles album by any means, but has simple songs that have stood the test of time.
I was ready to toss this app out the window with another mediocre album. No questions here about the validity of this being on the list.
I rummaged through drawers and my desk to break out the harmonica and play along with "I should have known better." ❤️
4/5
Where were you while we were getting high?
Rounding this 3.5 up to 4 stars, since these guys care about the whereabouts of their friends not getting high.

The Pogues
1/5
I did it all for me grog!
Some of these albums are in this list to cover a specific genre/time/niche, etc I get it. But unless you're a drunken sailor or at a frat party on St Patty's Day...I can't see ever listening to this album.
Supergrass
3/5
Compared to some of the British albums we have been handed in the past couple of weeks, this one was more tolerable. A couple of the stripped down songs(Time) were better than the others that were loud & messy. 2.6
Deerhunter
2/5
Had to finally turn this off at track 8. First three songs vocals were totally blurred. Next few songs slowed down and didn't get better. Seeing the Impractical Jokers guys in a meme saying let's make them listen to this one!😂😝
Kings of Leon
3/5
I remember listening to this album in a couple of the tracks when it came out, unfortunately there was nothing that kept it in my rotation long-term.
For me there is nothing that brings you back to it after you've experienced it a couple times.
Giving them a 2.5 & rounding up because I've been too harsh lately. 😝🤷🏻
Elton John
4/5
One of my favorite Elton movie moments is the bus scene from Almost Famous....released in 2000. Goes to show these songs are timeless!
I was impressed with the songs (most of them, Indian sunset not so much)I hadn't heard and how they still seem relevant and listenable in 2024.
Wu-Tang Clan
3/5
Made me feel gangsta. Really liked most of this album except for the talking during the long silly intros. 3.4
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
All hail to the Godfather of Grunge!
This contains some of Neils best songwriting and the crazy horse sound just can't me matched.
Beck
2/5
This album shows Beck has range and the ability to sing ballads, but for me they are lacking direction.
Most of the songs seem to get lost in the trippy background production, and separate you from the vocals. It could have been just as profound with him singing in front of simpler arrangements.
Kendrick Lamar
1/5
Struggle bus
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Timeless, groovy, funkadelic piece of righteous musical history right here.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
So this is the second Curtis Mayfield album that we've been able to listen to. Found this one better than the first, sounded soulful and real. Felt like the first one was a starsky and hutch soundtrack.
I can see that people in the '70s probably put this on to make love between Barry White and Marvin Gaye.
3.4
Germs
2/5
It was very hard to get past the vocals on this album. After I turned the mid-range down all the way it was more bearable.
The music could have been fun to listen to with a better lead.
If you know me, you know I have a germ phobia.
The Stone Roses
2/5
Starts out with some meh blah blah blah, then the middle is blah blah meh, and a resounding meh meh blahbbity blah blah at the end. Just underwhelming and nothing unique here. Seemed to blend into one long song with no purpose or direction. Definitely not the marriage of the Rolling Stones and Guns N Roses that I expected.😜✌🏻
Isaac Hayes
2/5
Kind of tough to rate a soundtrack album heavy in instrumentals without viewing the movie simultaneously.
For me the 70s cop show sound just doesn't hold up today. Quintessential for the time, but the relevancy has faded.
The B-52's
3/5
Better than a 3 l, but not quite a 4.
One of the most underrated live bands! They put on a great show, and harm no lobsters while doing so! 🪨🦞
Guns N' Roses
5/5
Best rock debut ever?
Metal glam punk sleeze rock at its best.
Iron Maiden
4/5
Thought it was cool an album referenced my favorite numerical sequence...666.
How these guys ever knew it was imprinted on top of my head is beyond me. I wanted to give this album a three and a half stars but the devil made me give it four. Also when I listened to it backwards it told me to help an old lady cross the street and drink my Ovaltine...that's wholesome shit, man!
Gram Parsons
2/5
I've always been surprised by the hype and praise of this album & artist.
If it weren't for the sweet sounds of Emmylou Harris, it would fail on a grander scale.
Nothing is memorable here or infectious enough to make me ever want to give it a second listen.
5/5
Easy button review, all the stars.
I wasn't sold on U2 as a kid, but liked some of their earlier albums before this came out. As I got older I realized how amazing it was.
The 30th anniversary tour was one of the most memorable concerts I've ever been to.
David Bowie
3/5
3.4
This was a new listen for me, but hardly sounded like something from 1977. The back half of the album felt like the soundtrack from Blade runner, which was released in 82. Sure sounds like Vangelis borrowed from this sound.
The first three songs didn't have much vocal content, but the funky jazzed up kazoo sounds kept it interesting & I was excited to hear the rest.
Track 4 almost had a rockabilly guitar with funky synths later in the song...still no vocals just some sighing. Then vocals come in 3 mins into a 6 min song...found that very interesting.
Tracks 8-11 is where I felt like it was a movie soundtrack. Very different and enjoyable...I really enjoyed listening to all the moving parts.
The Roots
3/5
This album seemed like it was all over the place, so good for the Roots and their range.
Some of the songs I really liked(The Seed) some I couldn't wait to be over(PG). Seemed like they had juvenile lyrics lacking depth. I feel like they have great song writing ability, but some of the songs that's not coming through.
Aerosmith
3/5
Not the best Aerosmith album, or probably even in their top 3 discussion. But a great raw sound from the 70s, but unfortunately this album just has a lot of filler.
Last child is still a great song that shows their talent and has a great vocal from Steven.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
3.6
Having heard Stop that Train so many times by JGB...I forget it's a Wailers song ..and technically a Peter Tosh song. Sweet gospel sounding reggae infusion💕
Here we are in 2024 and still in love with Bob Marley. With the release of One Love, his story and history are still alive.
Here is a prime example of why. Reggae isn't for everyone, but you can't deny the simple soulful rhythms and songwriting.
This music gives me relaxation and groove like no other outlets, and I think I do in fact smell ganja exuding from every note.
Does it make everyone's shoulders move back & forth like mine upon hearing it? More kinky reggae please!
Rod Stewart
4/5
This album was gifted to me by a friend a few yrs ago.
My fav piece of Rod Stewarts career. He and Ronnie were a great pair...this album has classic rock, soul, and a hint of Motown sound. It sounds like it could have been recorded last week...not 52 yrs ago. Maggie May is one of those timeless pieces that for me paints a story in my mind as I listen to it. One of the best classic rock tracks evah!
3.8
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
I have mixed feelings about this album because it had a couple of good parts of songs, but the vocals and crazy noises are just dreadful to the ear.
It's like they were in & out of rehab while recording. Also reminded me of when the Casio keyboards came out and we recorded stuff while we were stoned.
Also I'm very concerned for the folks that rated this a 5. 🤣🤷
Would still like to sit down and have a drink with you! Just probably wouldn't survive a long road trip together.
Scraping by @ 1.6 for two stars. I'm almost embarrassed. Sorry Mom!
Pink Floyd
5/5
Music that puts you in a deep trance. What to listen to when you're high, what you listen to when you want to remember when you got high.
David gilmour and Roger Waters have been feuding for years, but what they needed was each other to complete such a masterpiece. Could you imagine listening to this album without David gilmour's amazing voice? This album takes your mind to a different state of consciousness. Transports you to other levels.
Us & Them has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. From it's soft beginning to it's roaring orgasmic finish.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
You have to enjoy the vocalist to appreciate this. I can't get past that and it was a struggle for me.
The Pharcyde
3/5
Absolutely enjoyed this album and never remember hearing it!
Ya mama got a glass eye with a fish in it--That line cracked me up.
Jazzy and upbeat fun. I didn't take the lyrics seriously, but that's ok.
I don't know who Quintin is, but he must be important
Bill Evans Trio
4/5
I loved the way this album makes you feel relaxed and it has solid grooves. Will def listen again.
Made me feel like I was in a jazz club and I could hear ice clanking in my bourbon.
We have only had a couple jazz albums so far, this is the best.
Foo Fighters
4/5
Fingernails are pretty
Fingernails are good
It seems all they ever needed was a marking
I've always wondered what the heck this song was written about. Some folks say it's about absolutely nothing. Profound or meaningless ...the mark of a true Lyricist and musician is shaping it into something that fits within a song.
Amazing to think one man made this record and performed each instrument. Not the best Foo album...but significant he did it all himself for the most part. Still has songs I don't get tired of listening to, and an edgy sound that only the best drummer on the planet can shape.
Jane's Addiction
4/5
Amazing sound & distortion paired with hard driving trippy delight. Put some sprinkles on it and you have an orgasmic creation. Listened twice.
Had a Dad is over the top and has a raw edgy sound but not out of control.
Tim Buckley
2/5
David Allan Coe was cloned and they mixed in some Christopher Cross DNA...out comea rockabilly yacht rock.
Lyrics were cheap drunken bar room antics, and the sound was folk infused country. Meh. 2.4.
Traffic

This album could not hold my attention. Just kind of boring. Wait, what album am I reviewing? 😄
Barleycorn might need to die but he made a great sour mash.
Steely Dan

Josie is one of their most underrated songs.

Only giving the .4 because the first couple songs had potential. I got more weary of listening as this album dragged on. I was so very happy YouTube didn't have access to one of the songs.
Don McLean
3/5
Tough to rate an album that contains a lot of never heard folk ballads along with one of the greatest songs ever written.
Tough for anyone to top a masterpiece of storytelling and history for a complete album.
However ..this is "mood" music if there ever was...and McLeans voice has a soothing and calm like no other. So...if you are into him and his sound Im sure the whole thing is a treat. Me personally it's not a good fit.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Was not a fan of Bruce or this album at the time of its release. I was a young lad in 6th grade.
My Dad and I always lived Glory Days though!
It was nice to look back and listen to the songs on here that didn't have heavy radio play. They still are written and performed well, and could hold their own as top notch songs.
The lyrics speak to the people that work hard and enjoy a beer after work, and to the everyday Joe Schmoe of America.
One of the things I love about this album is you have radio friendly hits, slow ballads, storytelling, and one of the finest 2 minute 35 second songs ever...I'm on Fire.
This song was performed with simple words yet still hit heavy to the core.
Look at the lyrics on a page and then listen to how complex and emotional it's delivered, pure genius.
4.4
Girls Against Boys
3/5
I enjoyed this hardcore metal thrasher slasher album and wished I had listened to it at the gym instead of my desk.
Post hardcore...why were you late to the hardcore party?
This group sounds like Stone Temple Pilots wanted to be rougher so they had a baby with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie...out of the easy bake oven comes Girls against boys.
They have a great rough edge but not to the point of overblown death metal. They have just enough edge to be a favorite at the gym. Because yes, it's gotten old listening to Godsmack and Disturbed. Their drummer is badass too and I love the drum beats on this album. 3.4
Mike Oldfield
2/5
Not my cup of tea or my glass of bourbon.
Drive Like Jehu
2/5
This was our second post hardcore of the week, and not the better one. Lots of "noise" and not much to gain your attention. Seemed sloppy and loud, and that's about it.
OutKast
2/5
It took me way too long to finish this album. Hey ya is a tailgate staple...but I wasn't impressed by much of this.
2/5
This album felt like it was really run-of-the-mill music without much depth. Hate to say it but it was just background music. I didn't hear anything that said play me again because I'm astonishing.
PJ Harvey
2/5
I always laughed at people who thought Pink Floyd was a person.
Had this confusion with PJ Harvey back in the day.
Not sure what Rolling Stones writers were smokin when they landed this at 105 on a greatness list. Pass it to me please. It was ok but not even top 500 albums for me. Maybe 1,533 though.
Johnny Cash
4/5
4.4
Great artists can make a simple song & shuffle and turn it into something spectacular. The ultimate OutLaaaaaaawww country! Add in some gospel and Americana and you get a glimpse into what a Johnny Cash show would have been like. And the courage to play songs that were just written is incredible. 🖤
Soft Machine
2/5
Loud piercing nonsense at the beginning of this album almost made me turn it off. After that it was "listenable", but seemed to have no direction or purpose. I'm all for improvisational jams, psychedelic type music...but this was more like a science experiment gone bad vs a legitimate album....with just a pinch of potential, at times.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Sometimes less is better, simple songs can be profoundly moving, and just a voice and words can be the forefront of a piece of music.
This album didn't fit into what was going on in the mainstream music scene of 1988, yet was a breakthrough success. Truly gives you a feeling that she is speaking from her heart in every note.
Beatles
4/5
Easy one to rate today. Great collection of original songs and Motown hits that were blended into the Beatles early signature sound. You really got a hold on me is an all time fav. Such a great groove and smooth melody.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Great songwriting skills and a great hangover helper this morning! Such depth to these lyrics, easy to connect to like the Boss is directly talking to you.
3.8
Ravi Shankar
3/5
Haven't heard these sounds in years, so it was refreshing to explore them again.
These sounds are mesmerizing and relaxing, and played by the master of his instrument.
David Ackles
1/5
Barf bag please
Just so fake and sad attempts at lyrics, and oh so cliched.
Made me cringe several times because I could predict the next line without ever hearing this album.
Boston
4/5
I'm pretty biased on this one having heard it hundreds of times when I was a kid. I was only 5 when it came out but discovered it in 7th grade. Brad Delp's vocals were sweet sounding and spot on, surrounded by the sounds of anthem guitars.
Genesis
1/5
I was never a fan of Genesis, and here is a great reason why.
Let's make bad songs last 9 minutes.
The Charlatans
3/5
This was a pleasant surprise, since this is a band Ive never been turned on to.
They have a good sound and some decent song writing. Their mother's should be proud.
John Lennon
Leonard Cohen
2/5
The only song I could really tolerate on this album was the Marianne song. It didn't seem to fit within the rest of the context of the album... That was a good thing for me. The rest of it didn't seem to have much depth or meaning for me.... But it felt like it was supposed to be some serious emotional album.... That never really reached the audience and fell short of its ambition. After two Leonard Cohen albums I figured out that I'm not a fan ✌🏽💩. Does anyone besides pixie really read these things?
Arcade Fire
3/5
Their lead singer has a uniqueness that is refreshing. Not my fav stuff but a good listen.
Soul II Soul
2/5
A few of the opener songs had a strong rhythm and we're fun to listen to, but the vocals were weak. The songs with the guy singing were less than stellar.
Back to Life was a great song, but it seems like it was recorded by a different band at a different time. Big departure from the rest of this album.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
4/5
I must have been 4 or 5 rummaging through my grannies attic when I found my dad's 45 player and collection. Hundreds of records and Buddy Holly and Elvis were the greatest discoveries.
Out of piles of 45s he was one of the most memorable and for me sparked my love of music.
Goes to show that simple, straightforward rock songs can stand the test of time. Rockabilly, doo wop, toe tapping enjoyment. Some of these songs I had forgotten that I loved.
Joan Baez
2/5
I wanted to like this album, but it's just too bland and boring.
Great human and I respect and admire her accomplishments, but this was a struggle for me.
She has a beautiful voice, but folk is outdated and dreary today. Probably why Dylan went electric.
Big contrast to the Crickets album we just heard that's full of life and raw.
Leonard Cohen
1/5
The best piece of uncomfortable shit ever.
Billy Bragg
4/5
So refreshing to hear this album after the torturous week we've had with Leonard Cohen and others
It's tough to not rate the backstory of how this came together along with the music.
A great mix of Americana sounds and classic country/Americana. This has been one of the best discoveries of this daily album project yet.
Great lyrics from an American hero brought to life years later to fresh sounds with a whole new interpretation. This feels like a mix of Ryan Adams meets Neil Young. Thank you Nora Guthrie for spearheading this project.
Rush
3/5
Rush has some crazy extreme fans, but I've never been one.
However, I greatly respect their talent. Neil Peart arguably the best ever at his craft.
This album was a landmark for them and deemed "progressive" at the time of its release. Rush is a genre all it's own, while it alienates some...they have a sound all their own the devout seem to love. Who uses the word syrinx ever?
Black Sabbath
2/5
Shaking my head at all the five star reviews. There's not much great about this album. I was an Ozzy fan back in the day, but this falls short of greatness and just a smidgen better than cow poo. Heavy sound but a lot of senseless noise with no direction.
Quicksilver Messenger Service
2/5
They obviously need more LSD.
Paul Simon
3/5
Paul Simon is an astonishing songwriter, but his voice has never been super appealing for me. Me & Julio is a great song & memorable performance, but the rest is pretty bland for me to really stand behind & be excited about.
Kelela
2/5
It started out with a good groove and then turned tiresome by the end.
She has potential but needs stronger songwriting.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Father Grunge with the classic feedback and raw sound, sprinkle on some simple classics...you get what people love or hate. Powderfinger turn up to 11 please.
What an interesting catalog. This isn't the best album but has a couple of classic signature sounds from crazy horse. Raw edgy and classic Neil.
Snoop Dogg
5/5
Arguably in the discussion, the top 5 rap albums of all time?
One of the coolest mf's on the planet.
Listen to the Gourds version of Gin & Juice and thank me later.
Sarah Vaughan
2/5
Only giving this a 2 because of the scat song ..zip da doo doo wa buba looba dooda.
Had three listeners today and we all agreed.
Portishead
1/5
Dreadful and annoying
The Style Council
3/5
Pleasant surprise after the last two days of agony.
While not my typical listening choice, this was great Sunday morning drive music.
Miles Davis
3/5
I'm not a Jazz efficianado by any means, but I know Miles Davis is a legend. Sounds were nice and relaxing, but I wasn't present & in the moment listening. I found myself drifting off, maybe that's what jazz is supposed to do?
Sonic Youth
3/5
Saw Sonic Youth once and thought they were terrible. Granted, they were old by then.
This album surprised me because it was fun in some areas, but the times where it was just loud yelling and crazy sounds was just irritating. Maybe I'm getting old too...? 🤔. Gotta run, kids are on my lawn!!!
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
1/5
This sounded like the organ player at the ballpark got drunk and decided they wanted to add vocals.
Prince
4/5
Enjoyed this album beginning to end for the most part.
Great songs and brilliant delivery.
Santana
4/5
Biased opinion since two of these songs are all time stop what you're doing & turn to 11 for me.
Santana transports you to another mode of consciousness without taking the little piece of paper on your tongue.
Jeff Beck
2/5
You can definitely hear the similarities between Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on this album. Some of the riffs could have been on Led Zeppelins first release. This album has four superstars still finding their way, and is kind of raw & lacks a solid song foundation. While there are glimpses of what's to come, it still feels like freshmen trying to get in the senior keg party.
Circle Jerks
1/5
Not sure I would ever take this album seriously, even if I were 15 and misunderstood.
Amy Winehouse
3/5
I remember when this album was released and feeling like it had a throwback sound to it.
Years later it seems the wow factor has been faded into feeling like it wasnt anything innovative, just borrowed from the past. Still has a couple catchy songs that are fun to listen to.
Beck
3/5
I could never figure out what a sub eyed girl was. Didn't know the lyric controversy until today.
Maybe I should try playing it backwards and see what it says?😉
This is a fun album to listen to, but for me lacks four star status. A great 3.44 though.
Metallica
3/5
I wasnt a Metallica fan back in the day. It's because Chris Owens and his bratty friends all wore Metallica & Slayer shirts everyday to high school. Metallica also looked extremely sweaty and sloppy in their Hit Parader and Circus photos. 😂🤘🏻
So needless to say I never listened to this when it came out. The video for One was all over MTV and you couldn't ignore hearing it. It was a breakthrough. Pounding drums and awesome sound, but for the casual listener not much of that is contained in the rest of the songs here. But I truly appreciate the talent these guys have, Lars makes some incredible beats on this album. I will also say my neck is kind of sore today from head banging yesterday. Looking forward to the rest of the Metallica albums in the countdown.
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
This is clearly one of the better jazz albums that we've had in this list so far. It's still something that I would not normally listen to, so rating a jazz album is tough for me.
The Cure
4/5
When I was in college my neighbors had black hair with a lot of hairspray and had stickers of the Cure all over their car. I was getting into hippie music and jam bands.
This album sure doesn't seem like it's from 89, great sound songwriting and a trippy journey. Wonder what happened to the Curemobile???
3.6
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
1/5
Rubbish!
Fiona Apple
2/5
I really only thought the bolt cutters song deserved a second listen. Not sure why this album was critically acclaimed?
Probably why I never listened to it in the first place. Sorry Fiona, loved you in Shameless though!
Deep Purple
2/5
Not sure about the hype regarding this album, I've seen the original lineup twice in concert and this doesn't seem to capture their energy and sound.
Roxy Music
1/5
Hello and welcome to my review.
When I was a kid I did a pretty awesome performance of Love is the Drug. Disappointed it's not here... Never knew of another song by these guys...but had always heard good things about them.
One of my struggles in life: remembering the difference between Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno.
This album has so much potential but it goes off into these loud annoying sounds that are undescribable. One of the songs I had to shut off. Talk about all over the place.
Talvin Singh
3/5
Relaxing and enjoyable for the most part.
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Wasn't bad for a jazz album.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Little Wing 🔥what a masterpiece recording for it's time
Hookworms
2/5
Pix was right sounded like Depeche mode ..with some Inxs ripoff too. Annoying, glad it's over.
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Took a look at the reviews for this album, and don't remember seeing so many 1 and 5 star reviews. Seems like people love it or can't stand it.
Give Springsteen credit for going against the grain and releasing something in raw form. Interesting to find out he planned on releasing these later with the E Street band. Some of these songs would have sounded so different with a full band... But that's not how it was released. While these songs deal with real world America and probably connect to some, the songs themselves are left without a familiar hook that would leave most people wanting for more. In the progression of Springsteen's works and legacy, maybe Born in the USA never happens without Nebraska happening first. Imagine hearing Glory Days in the stripped down raw version...would it be one of my all time favs? Prob not...but I'm sure glad we got the production it deserved..and without Nebraska we may have missed out on all of the USA.🤣✌🏻🇺🇲
The Who
4/5
It had been years since I listened to this in its entirety. Has some bumps and bruises...but some classics that will be played til the end of time.
See me
Feel me
Touch me
Heal me
Another example of how something on paper can look so simple, yet be delivered in grand scale!
Röyksopp
2/5
How do you get the two little dots to show up on an Android keyboard? Some mysteries in life were meant to be unsolved!!
Royksopp°°...best I can do.
Thought this might be relaxing to listen to, but then was disinterested fast. I thought the guitar solo at the 37 min mark was insane though.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Hadn't listened to this entire album in quite some time. Felt like I was in a time machine. I think how many more times is one of the best jams ever.
Just shocking to think that these guys had been playing together very short time.
Devendra Banhart
1/5
I wanted this to be over quickly.
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
Pretty enjoyable and a pleasant surprise
Rush
3/5
Not a devoted Rush fan, But I applaud those loyal faithful to the band. They are devoted.
I really like Red Barracudachetta. Kneel Pert was a great drummer and a rock god.
Randy Newman
1/5
I love LA! But not this album. Go listen to Joe Cocker's version of you can leave your hat on and you'll be a whole lot happier.
The White Stripes
4/5
Jack White is someone I always wanted to find time to listen to more. Glad this came up today.
Strong performances with soft points and straight out thrashing garage rock.
Eels
3/5
This was enjoyable, but not stellar. Found some of the songs a bit boring ...but great sound & vocals throughout.
And what about Dobby's cousin on the artwork?
Super Furry Animals
2/5
This was borderline trash.
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
I felt like I was cruising around in the grocery store hearing annoying drum beats.
Green Day
4/5
This album has it all great song writing great performance and straight in your face rock and roll.
Green Day has kept punk alive and well.
X-Ray Spex
2/5
So the vocals were all over the place. First song just horrible, next song ok...then back to hard to listen to.
This is a great sounding band for the time this was released.
Very cool and interesting album cover.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Dylan never sounded so good.
Master lyricist
Great sounding band
Songs that paint a picture in your mind
Yes
3/5
I always liked Roundabout and always hoped they had more songs like it. Big catalog of music over the years, but not many other songs that weren't too strange to listen to. I will crank up Owner of a lonely heart(not on this album obviously) anytime it's on...but for the rest of the Yes catalog it's just not my bag. This not a solid 3...it's a 2.6 and I'm being nice since they are in the Rock hall. Catch me on a crappy day and it's a 2.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
If you're going to listen to a crooner, listen to the best!
This album transported me back in time to a dark lit NYC club with candles on the tables. Relaxing and soulful.
The Clash
4/5
There's a scent of cigarettes, cheap beer, and the feeling of saliva spit in your face from a small club when listening to this band. I don't love punk, but it seems so much better when the Clash are doing it. Raw, edgy, not perfect...but it works! This album pulls you into wanting to jump in the mosh pit and risk serious injury...even at an old age.
Peter Gabriel
5/5
I saw someone say "leave this type of production in the 80s "and basically saying it's not relevant today.
Peter Gabriel came out of nowhere with this album and dominated radio and MTV airplay. It was groundbreaking at the time. So when rating this you can't help but think about the visuals that accompanied this album, at a time when video was king. Gabriel merged both music and the visual aspect into a masterpiece.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I must be far out in left field because I've never understood the hype regarding this album. To me they have probably half a dozen other albums better than this one. Tumbling Dice is a great classic, but the rest of the songs aren't too memorable.
Giant Sand
2/5
I felt like this lasted longer than a root canal. Turned it off at track #29. Maybe 30 seconds of one song felt like it had a nice groove, but the rest had flies buzzing around it like a cow patty on a hot summer day.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Tenth avenue is a fav of mine, and Born to Run is still relevant today. The rest of the album just isn't at the same level.
The Police
3/5
In this case, I loved that the Poleece cam knocking on my door. What a great trip back in time.
Other than Message in a bottle and Walking on the Moon...I sure don't ever remember hearing these other songs. Some of the other songs seem a bit sloppy and thrown together, but still great performances. 3.4
Randy Newman
1/5
If I wanted to listen to Randy Newman I would watch Toy Story. OVERRATED!
Blah blah frickety blah
Elliott Smith
2/5
First song weird strange whispering cringy voice 2
2nd song-more of the same cringy voice ,but not as bad. Musically better song 3
3rd song I could swear is the same song as #1. This guy's whiney voice isn't getting any better. Rolling Stone number 261 greatest albums of all time is a hoax. This guy must be a record exec's kid?
4th song, even lighter whispering...just can't relate to this whiney/serious vibe. Comes off as fake and not genuine. 2
5th song, opinion is not changing much, but at least it's a little more upbeat. 3
6th song more awful sad whiney fakeness 2
ABBA
3/5
Better than the first ABBA dabba doo album we had.
Dancing Queen and Fernando were really good. I saw poor Fernando didn't make the original cut. What a travesty!
I can see how this was big in the 70s ..but in that fateful evening of July 12 1979...disco died a fiery death.
King Crimson
3/5
This was a fun album to listen to, but didn't have much of a wow factor for me. The scary artwork on my big screen TV kind of scared me every time I walked through the living room.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Beautiful voice and performances. Some of the music is just dated and out of touch. Great songwriting too, but relevancy today is a stretch. Some of the backing horns come in at strange times, and make things seem like a 70s TV show.
Skunk Anansie
3/5
One of the most misleading/interestingly strange band/album name combinations to date.
🦨
There was nothing chill about this album, it is a rocker borderline head banger. I would listen to some of this stuff at the gym. But didn't really find it to be something I would really latch on to. Middle of the road for me...3.0
Dr. Dre
4/5
Hard one for me to rank based on one listen.
I'm not the typical person rating this album because I've never listened to it. I was in college in 92 and listening to college alternatively radio, and exploring jam bands and the Grateful Dead catalog. I see for many it was influential and the voice of a generation.
So I heard a couple of songs back in the day of course, but not the entire album. I know Snoop got his start with Dre, but was surprised by the amount of time Dre actually raps on this album vs his inmates.
Had to get the cliff notes for the intro from one of my homies in cell block C, the ever intimidating Pixie PT. Props!
You have to take a step back from the lyrics and not take them so seriously.
With the whole back story and split from Ruthless, you have the makings of the ultimate revenge album. The beats can't be denied here, and my Tacoma was thumping on the way home yesterday. 3.5
N.E.R.D
3/5
Ok so I like the cover art. The cracked egg is clever. Full star for that. ⭐
Not sure what direction these guys were headed with this album, seems to lack a true identity,. At least now I know Pharrell Williams was in a band called Nerd!
CHIC
3/5
1. 4
2. 2
3. 3.5 Lost track of how many times they said Dancing. Great grooving song though
4. My forbidden lover. 2
Cheesy to the max
5. Can't stand to love you 2
6. Will you cry 2. Super cheesy too. I might cringe not cry.
7. What about me. Another great groove song. 4
2.78
The opening song is great and one of the best disco songs back in the day. Some of the others just seem dated and the sound is really tough for me to like. That's why I had to rate each song and give it a second listen today. Really good and really cringe worthy!
Justice
3/5
I couldn't handle the last three songs ..they were like night at the Roxbury with lots of cocaine. The rest of it was enjoyable, but not my usual genre.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
It's 2024 and a band is still touring calling themselves Skynyrd. ???
Tuesdays Gone slide guitar is some of the best ever.
New York Dolls
2/5
Ozomatli
2/5
Seems like this album is all over the place and lacks some direction. Would have ranked the first few songs a 3, but midway through the record I was ready to say goodbye. (Not the teary eyed kind)
Adele
5/5
One of the most powerful/beautiful voices of the last 20 yrs.
Prince
5/5
All hail his purpleness!!!
This is one of those albums that you will never forget the time that it came out when you were a kid. There was no other artist that molded performance, video, sex appeal and talent like Prince. MJ may he been the king of Pop, but Prince could rock out on a guitar and that added a whole new dynamic to his performances. Songwriting second to none.
Frank Ocean
3/5
The music - beats here are good, and I wanted to really like this album. But for me the vocals are bland and seem like one long song.
Beastie Boys
4/5
I enjoyed this album all the way down to the same of the Eagles. Definitely surprised me.
3.6 with the benefit of rounding up to a 4!
Funkadelic
3/5
This wasn't what I expected at all. Loved the raunchy guitar throughout. But this lacks songs you would want to hear over and over
The Triffids
2/5
This was like a bad low budget movie soundtrack
Manic Street Preachers
2/5
Nothing to see here, just some background noise.
Air
2/5
Had high hopes for this album , but the third song you wondered wth was going on.
Paul McCartney
4/5
This album shows the diverse songwriting and performance brilliance from one of the all time greats. Not bad for the first exit from the bug group!
Performance on Maybe I'm Amazed is off the charts.
Teenage Fanclub
2/5
Weak melodic wanna be's.
Wanted to stop about track 7. Too poppy for me.
Tom Waits
1/5
Awful and excruciatingly painful.
Dude sounds like he just had COVID, is drunk & constipated.
The Cars
5/5
Can't help but give a shout out to the Fast Times soundtrack. A timeless breakthrough album 4.5 up to 5
Still sounds great today.
Sheryl Crow
4/5
I like a good beer buzz early in the morning too. Have only done it maybe twice though.
Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere, well so long to this life. One of the best lines ever.
Still remember hearing Leaving Las Vegas for the first time wondering where did this come from and who is Sheryl Crow.
Big Star
3/5
Don't understand the hype regarding this album. Seems like it's not much different than any other 70s obscure rock album. Critics must have been paid to back this record and that nonsense spread like wildfire. Kind of like Graham Parsons albums are really good😂💩👎🏻.
2.5, 3 is prob too generous, but the mathematician in me is rounding up.
Pixies
2/5
Nothing appealed to me about this album, seemed like a poorly produced effort. Looking forward to a new day/new album.
Cee Lo Green
1/5
Cee how low you can go!!! I don't feel bad saying that after this terrible piece of work. Even the Timbaland song is bad. Go ahead invite your buddies to be on an album that's bad and make it worse. These songs were not written well. Cee Lo you had your fifteen mins of fame and it's gone ah roonie.
And if those motel boxes are still a quarter that's a bargain!💯🤑
The Flaming Lips
2/5
Listen to the Eels Novocaine for the Soul...could have been the same band/record. The whiny vocals are nails on chalkboard for me.
Primal Scream
2/5
This was pretty much poo, with a scent of spoiled trash.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Timeless!
Still not happy about I just called to say I love you, but Stevie this one is great.
Stephen Stills
4/5
Stephen has always been an underrated picker. So beautifully woven together with his voice, organs, and backing singers.
3.5, rounding up for one of the greatest songs ever. Do do do do do do do do do do do do..doo doo doot do duh doo, doo doo doot.
Koffi Olomide
2/5
Hmmmm...
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
This has a couple of favs and a classic 70s sound. Bell Bottom Blues❤️
LTJ Bukem
2/5
I call this music that makes you want to pee. Gets you all hyped up with the crazy drum beats and fast tympo so you have to go to the John.
The Who
5/5
Okay let's talk Rock God's now shall we? And what about the guys that don't get a lot of the credit: Keith Moon and John entwistle? John is probably the best bass player in the world that no one ever heard of. Keith Moon lives on through animal in the Muppets. This album has such an incredible sound from top to bottom. It also has some of the greatest lyrics ever captured...some are so simple yet so tremendously delivered...
If I swallow anything evil put your finger down my throat
If I shiver please give me a blanket, keep me warm let me wear your coat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💯🔥❤️💥
Incredible Bongo Band
3/5
So this album was fun.
Apache has been sampled a few times and never knew this was it's origin.
Have to say by the end I was tired of the signature 70s drum beat. I found myself wanting to do the running in place dance for most of this. Helped me clean the house.
Public Enemy
4/5
Great throwback jams.
The Dictators
3/5
First off I didn't take this album seriously from the get-go... Due to the album artwork.
Some of the song titles and lyrics would be seriously questioned today but once you hear the lyrics and the delivery you can tell that these guys almost are Weird Al influencers. I never knew whether or not to take them seriously. It's raunchy and sloppy, but fun in a juvenile kind of way. Probably exactly what an early punk album was supposed to be.
Supergrass
3/5
It was just music playing. Vanilla
Not really interesting, not really bad, not really good. Giving them a 3-star review only because they had an upright bass, and I like the word Supergrass. Wish I could still smoke it.
Charles Mingus
3/5
This album was relaxing and easy to listen to. Not a jazz fan so wouldn't know a stellar jazz album.
Hole
3/5
I always tried to imagine this album being released without the obvious ties to Nirvana...and how it would be viewed.
For me I enjoyed a few of the songs back in the day...but always thought a lot of it was loud, clangy and lacked direction. Pretty sub par but a couple of strong songs.
David Bowie
4/5
Was so happy to see this album come up. One of my life goals is to listen to more Bowie.
Changes is an all time fave!
Discovered other songs I really like too.
Andy Warhol
Song for Bob
Quicksand
Such a great sound and beautifully engineered album. Would give it five stars but this was a first time listen.
Lightning Bolt
1/5
Barely a 1. This is one of those albums they had to put on the list just to sit back and watch the bad reviews come in.
Not sure why anybody would listen to this more than once.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
First of all this album was way too long.
I do like Janelle's voice though
Some of the songs just don't mesh together well.
Seemed like she got caught up in trying to mesh different genres and it went off the tracks.
Finley Quaye
2/5
Dave Chappelle really made this album as a joke right??
The Go-Betweens
2/5
These peeps wish they had been picked to sing the Friends theme song. I can see why they broke up after this album.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
Albums that are too long for their own good seems to be the theme of the week.
I kinda sorta remember 1991 and tons and tons of chili peppers tshirts...not knowing who they were.
Flea kicks some serious bass lines on this album, and seems to the the standout on a lot of the sub par songs. Overall the album has a great sound for the time, but is pretty repetitive.
3.5 & rounding up to 4.
Sugar
3/5
Is it me or are the last two songs on this album by another band???
I want more of that sound. Didn't love it didn't hate it.... But find out what happened on those last two songs and do more of it,,,,!!!
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Ok so I tried to give us a chance. After 3 or 4 songs that I was dreading the rest of it. Way too down in the dumps. Dark & dreary for the two star win
Thelonious Monk
3/5
This was my fav jazz album we've had so far after 200+ albums. When I saw that it was released in 1957 I didn't expect it to sound like it could have been recorded in the past few years.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Sorry but I cringe when I hear some of their songs...while Mrs Robinson is an all time fav.
It's hard to be in the right state of mind to find all of this album enjoyable.
2.5 & they are some lucky dudes to get a 3 out of me.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
I'm starting to think I'm not a good reviewer. Seeing how some people had so much to say about this album, and wrote lengthy paragraphs. Maybe it's winter where they are?
Not sure what shoegazing is, but feel like Al Bundy probably did a lot of it.
Very surprised this was released in 1988. Sounded newer for sure. Not a overly optimistic newer, just an observation.
It was interesting from that perspective l, but didn't consider it an everyday listen. 2.4 & not worthy of rounding up to three.
Common
3/5
Ok so this wasn't what I expected. I've seen him in movies but never heard his music.
Radiohead
2/5
Please schedule interviews with all the folks that rated this as 5 and let's have an intervention please.
This is sadly ordinary and the vocals are irritating mostly throughout. A couple of songs seemed ok, but the last track put me over the edge.
DJ Shadow
2/5
Hard to rank this one! Songs were interesting but some were just clanky noise.
Solange
3/5
I read the accolades for this album and had high hopes.
Unfortunately for me it was boring and repetitive. Beautiful voice!
Kudos for the powerful messages & theme spread throughout.
2.6
Van Morrison
5/5
Best live album we've had in 200+ albums.
Sound is impeccable
Vocals spot on
Band is funky
What a treat this was.
4.6
Parliament
4/5
Enjoyed this while cleaning the house. Running the sweeper while shaving the groove thing is much more enjoyable.
Love
1/5
This albterum was trash. Not interesting at all.
Stan Getz
4/5
Feels like walking through a club in Miami on the 60s with a James Bond suit on, about to order a bourbon and go for the cigarette case. Enjoyable and classy. Now I want to get one of those shaky things that sound like a mini rainstick playing.
Enjoyable in c
Songhoy Blues
3/5
Great performances and energy. Interesting style of music.
Alanis Morissette
5/5
What's to say that hasn't already been said? As I listened to this yesterday, I'm still blown away by her powerful performance and delivery. Oh, and the dogs are great and have depth and meaning behind them. This one is unforgettable.
Raekwon
1/5
This was just boring. Not sure if I even stayed awake for this one.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
Just dreadful. No reason to ever listen to this.
Michael Jackson
3/5
Feels like giving this 4 stars would be just for name recognition.
The way you make me feel is a great dance song...smooth criminal makes you move as well. But Dirty Diana? Never need to hear this again. Just a strange album for the most part of you remove the few great songs. Lacked the passion and grooves of the songs I already mentioned. The album as a whole was just ok.
The Go-Go's
4/5
I was excited to see this album come up in the list today. I'm probably biased because I've had a lifelong infatuation with Belinda Carlisle. The music is simple, the performances are great. Funny to see this mentioned as new wave ..when it was what you grew up with in the early 80s.
Beatles
5/5
What to say about an album that sounds brilliant today, and was released before you were born? I'll be 53 soon and I'm guessing this album will mean even more to me by the time I'm 75. To me this is not the best Beatles album.... It's not the best songs. What has more than any other record is the raw emotion in performance.
Golden Slumbers might just be Paul's most vulnerable and gritty vocal ever. To me it defines him. The piano and strings mesh beautifully with his voice and it will never be matched in 92 seconds of ecstasy. You have Oh Darling on the same album. Maybe one of the best Beatles doowop heavy rocking songs ever. Again a brilliant performance. When you told me, you didn't need me anymore...such passion in the delivery.
And we haven't even talked about George yet. Something is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Five isn't fair for this as a measurement of its extreme beauty.
I want you, so heavy is one of the trippiest psychedelic journeys ever. Its out there on a planet all by itself.
Lou Reed
2/5
One great song , another that was just ok...and then a lot of trash that was not meant for human consumption. The last two songs are nails on chalkboard.
Gang Of Four
3/5
This was fun, new listen for me.
Felt like newer than 1979 and could have been an opening band for the Kinks and would have been a killer double bill.
Loved the raw guitar sound and the silly lyrics. Not perfect l, but I can see how this was popular when it came out.
Neu!
1/5
Ok my peeps, let's make a dentist chair album that relaxes people.
Liam-I want to bloody sing!
Liam pays the producers to put his songs on the end of the album.
Boring went to crazyness.
Scott Walker
1/5
I hope Mr Walker has a day job.
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Loved getting turned on to this one. Keep it rolling. Loved the frogs too. 🐸
The Offspring
4/5
3.49 rounding up to 4
I may be dumb but I'm not a dweeb.
Good gym music to pump the iron to. If I had been still waking up today, probably would have been a 3.
William Orbit
2/5
Loved the vocals on track #2, strong performance.
The cowbell on track 8 rivaled BOC.
Somehow the drum solo on #6 fell short for me.
Not good gym music.
Sigur Rós
3/5
Going against my beloved Pixie Warrior on this one, I thought it was kind of cool. The title track was the best, except for the Yoko Ono scream at the end. 3.4
The Young Gods
1/5
Sounded like a drunken bar fight at 3 am. Hard to put into words what I thought about this one. Think sewage smell.
Elis Regina
3/5
She has a very appealing voice. Interesting and enjoyable, but doesn't strike me as incredible.
Sabu
3/5
I imagine this is framework for all drum circles around a campfire that involved smoking weed and tripping out. Fun for a while, but I'm not at a drum circle...I'm in a cubicle.
Lorde
3/5
This is a tough call. Some of it is really good and has great music, but some of the lyrics are really cheesy.
But hey, I'm a Cheetos fan.
Paul Simon
5/5
This was one of the most important albums of the 80s. Shocked to see this app only has a 3.76 rating for it. Such a great collaborative effort.
Khaled
1/5
Painful. Imagine was appalling.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Masterpiece.
I still get articles and news clips about the relationship between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. The reunion that never happens. They somehow managed to release two of the greatest albums of all time. The contrast between their vocals blends surprisingly well together. Total stoner music and a visual journey like no other when the movie was released. The rock opera to measure all rock operas to follow.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Hard to believe all these songs made it onto one album. Each one is individually incredible.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
The holy Grail of heavy metal beginnings. The album that would be compared to all albums after it's release. The quintessential hard Rock heavy metal starter pack. This laid the groundwork for my introduction into blasting guitar gods as a kid.
Black Dog-one of the best album opening songs ever. Such a loud and raucous groove.
Rock & Roll-the quintessential drum roll and hook of been a long lonely lonely lonely time.
The Battle of evermore, what a standalone inspirational song. The haunting intro and lyrics take you to a land far far away. Such a visual journey for me that is created in my mind from this song.
Stairway gets a lot of flack these days but to me is still one of the best songs ever. When Bonham hits the first beat halfway thru this song l, it skyrockets into an awesome jam.
Misty MTN Hop is another great song and one of my favs. Often overlooked, but I love the lyrics and this one also takes my mind on a journey visualizing the story told. The delivery of the song by Plant is superb.
Four sticks is simple, but has a great groove and is a total psychedelic stoner song.
Going to California was one of my favorite ballads as a kid. Such a beautiful and inspirational song.
When the levee breaks is probably the best album closer ever. One of my fav Zep songs and another amazing psychedelic classic. Crying won't help you and praying won't do you no good. Fix your shit and move on, kid, you're on your own....thats what I hear when I hear this song. Surprisingly great advice. This album has no filler tracks.
Einstürzende Neubauten
1/5
After an awesome week with two of my all time favs...chaos was bound to happen. This gave me memories of being in a dentist chair and getting a root canal. Not very appealing to hear a drill running with crazy shrieks on the background. But I see that this needed added to the list as a great life lesson. Just not sure what it is. 😂✌🏻🥳🤮🤮🤮💩💩💩🍔💩💩💩💩👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Taylor Swift
4/5
Hard to rate when this isn't something you would normally listen to.
I lean towards the songs here that are simpler without the big production sound. Had to listen a second time(which I don't often do!) to dive more into the lyrics. I can definitely see why so many people can relate to her writing and feel she is the voice of a generation. Wildest Dreams was probably my favorite because it made me think of someone or something that would be meaningful to experience and love.
AC/DC
5/5
The overall thunderous sound of AC/DC at its best. These lyrics are juvenile and outdated, but the sound of the band holds up today.
Fiona Apple
3/5
Would love to see her branch out and explore her vocal range. Incredible voice, but this is one long continuous song.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Want to give this album a 5, but have it coming in at a solid 4.4.
Great storytelling and delivery of lyrics by the godfather of Americana song writing. Maggie's Farm is a fav for me.
Oasis
2/5
Never got Oasis and their music then, certainly don't get it now. Just find it very vanilla and uncaptivating.
Steve Earle
3/5
This has some great Americana sound, but nothing mind blowing.
The Black Crowes
4/5
Hey little thing let me light your candle cause Mama I'm sure hard to handle now ______ ___.
Wth is he saying? I've seen it listed as at least three things.
Anywho...saw this tour when I was in college. Opened for ZZTop at the Nuthouse. Great show.
David Bowie
3/5
Ive always liked Golden Years....but never heard any of the rest of this album. If you want to hear Bowie high on cocaine, apparently this is the album for you. Might have been better in LSD. 3.4 since it has a great song, the rest is just blah.
Shack
1/5
Annoying vocals. Wanted to turn this off quickly.
Gorillaz
3/5
I like how they spelled geep, that's about it. Great concept but was pretty sub par for me. Probably being nice giving it a 3
Arctic Monkeys
2/5
Not a fan.
Slint
2/5
I didn't want the guys to drown(cover art), but was hoping enough water would make them stop playing.
PJ Harvey
2/5
People are high that rate this a 5. I used to get high, now I sit in a cubicle and push buttons. This did not brighten my day in any way, shape, or form.
Awful sounding and couldn't wait for it to be done, so I stopped at song#5. If I had went on it would be a one star. Probably is a one star, but giving it a two because I was able to stop early and not waste any more of my time. Have a nice day!😜🤘🏻🤷🏻♂️🌝🌞🎃💩👻
R.E.M.
4/5
I always thought of myself as a mediocre REM fan, and like their early raw sound a bit more. Orange Crush has a great sound and is a standout.
When you're such a great band I think it's easy to be critical of their work and want everything to be great. To me REM always did what they wanted to and even though they went mainstream, I don't feel like they ever did anything everyone else wanted them to do, or did it on purpose. Kudos to them. They wrote meaningful songs and have their place in history as a one of a kind band.
Muddy Waters
5/5
Best blues album we've had so far. Best use of Mojo in a song.
Was lucky enough to be turned onto muddy Waters by some old friends of mine that had a late night radio show in my home town. Thank you funk and flash for turning me on to muddy Waters!
Slade
2/5
This one was hard to get into. I'm a fan of the era, but this didn't seem to be anything stellar from that time period.
Eminem
4/5
Marshal Mathers
Gordon Sumner
Reginald Dwight
Top 3 greatest names not used to record their material in history.
Never listened to this back in the day, so for the whole album it was a first for me. Impressive performance and incredible delivery of his lyrics. I wish I knew who all the people were he is talking about. I feel like I need a nice diagram.
Bob Dylan
5/5
This took me back in time for sure! I tried really hard to put myself in 1963 when I listened to this. Had to be so powerful to listen to back then...yet so simple today. Nobody comes out with an acoustic guitar and harmonica and releases an album these days. Raw and genuine, love him or hate him...nobody will ever be like him.
Mike Ladd
3/5
This started bad ....few songs in the middle were good...couldn't listen to the song where they just yelled motherfucker over and over...ending was ok. Just average!
2.6
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
I've always loved the opening bass line to block rockin beats. The rest of the album falls short of spectacular.
It's way too heart pounding to listen to as an old man of 53.
It gives me anxiety.
But imagine yourself in the '90s ,young again & a tweaker at a club. Let's drop some X and go for it. Oh to be young again.
The Cardigans
2/5
Couldn't handle the multiple songs with the whiny fake voice. Poor Iron Man!!
Ramones
4/5
I've had Blitzkrieg bop on a playlist for years, but never heard the whole album. This should be enshrined in Canton.
Great sounding classic American punk.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Not the ideal album to listen to alone with your dog, but iconic.
Jazmine Sullivan
2/5
Couldn't get into this one
Jurassic 5
4/5
I loved the sounds and grooves of this album. For never hearing of this album/group...it was a nice find from this app.
Dr. John
1/5
This is nice calling this garbage. If sicked major ball sacks.
Patti Smith
3/5
This was a decent album, but nothing to get excited about.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Enjoyed the Van Morrison, never heard their remake until now.
Herbie Hancock
4/5
This was one of the best albums I've never heard in this app. Stereo was turned up to 11.
Bon Jovi
3/5
BJ was huge back in the day, but still can't forgive my brother and his best friend for playing this 1,000 times while I sat in the back of a 79 Camaro freezing my ass off so they could look cool with the windows down in winter time.
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
As far as weird awkward voice and mellow music goes, this wasn't too bad. Oddly enough found myself liking it by the end. Not 4 stars kind of liking.
Cocteau Twins
2/5
Blah blah frickedy blah. Thompson Twins wannabes.
Dime a dozen back in the day. Nothing to see here.
Eagles
4/5
But I'm already standing, on the ground ....one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
Right about now right about now right about nowwwwww
Magazine
2/5
Another overrated British blah meh blah album.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Great look back in time and such a soulful sound
Morrissey
1/5
I never allowed myself to listen to this garbage and I'm glad I didn't.
Ray Charles
4/5
What a timeless classic. Loved the background singers and Arrangements...not overdone and came in just at the right times. What a big production for 1962.
Ray could sing the phone book and sell records!
Duke Ellington
3/5
Didn't seem like this was much different than the other jazz albums we've had. Great performers, but just not my jam.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
This has two of the best songs of all time. Some of the best backing vocals ever as well.
I won tickets in college to see Crosby & Nash after identifying a snippit of monkey man. 🤷🏻♂️
Some of the songs are filler, but most of it is solid. A strong 4.4!
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
Totally biased as this is my fav Neil album. After some weird stuff in the 80s, Freedom and Ragged Glory brought him back to life. Released about a year before the grunge albums took off...Grandpa grunge delivers epic feedback and raunchy sloppy guitar sounds like only Crazy Horse can deliver.
MC Solaar
2/5
This was hard to pay attention to. Every 50th word something sounded like English. Music/beats were on but not stellar.
The Smiths
1/5
4 songs were enough. Cannot handle the vocals. Please get out the MIB neuralyzer and make me forget this album and the Smiths. More Sex Pistols and Clash please.
808 State
2/5
This stunk like some old underwear
Brian Eno
4/5
This has been the first weird/off the wall album that I've really enjoyed. Nothing was forced, but your ears and mind were opened up to different perspectives. If I still got high this would be a delightful escape. I would pair this appropriately with a ying yang blotter or some California sensemilla.
Eno has an illustrious career and it was really fun to read about him. This guy has done it all!
Solomon Burke
5/5
What a treasure. Felt like I was transported back in time. I read he was the most unfairly overlooked singer of soul music...compared to James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett. So far this is the most memorable album we've had of the great soul singers from the 60s. Glad to see he's in the rock hall where he belongs
Dagmar Krause
1/5
I've been behind on albums this week, and the only good thing about this one was I didn't have to listen to all of it because it's pure shit.
Eminem
3/5
My name is drove me nuts back in the day, but I think that's what he was going for.
Leonard Cohen
1/5
Enough Leonard Cohen please this dude sucks. I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to listen to this trash. How he ever made a living at making records I'll never know. And you probably caught me on a good day LOL. 😜
Oh, and if I could give this asshat a negative rating I certainly would.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Would have kept half the songs for another album. This was one band I've heard of but never actually listened to them. It was nice to discover them, but not sure I could listen to them on the regular.
Janet Jackson
3/5
This has some really solid songs, and has some grand messages for the world.
Unfortunately though, some of the weird & clanky drum beats just don't stand the test of time. I still love you JJ, and I would have loved you better than DeBarge. 3.4
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
I remember my mom having this album when I was very young.
I thought their name was hysterical, and the songs just horrible.
Listening to this album now I can truly appreciate how huge this must have been when it was released. Powerful vocals and timeless harmonies.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
Enjoyed this ...remember their name from back in the day but none of their music. Trippy and relaxing... Good background music when you're trying to work. Not good enough to warrant for stars... Try harder Jesus.
Wilco
3/5
I always loved the line playing kiss covers beautiful and stoned. Doesn't get any better than that. Unfortunately the rest of the album is just pretty ho-hum. Kudos to one of my fav quirky little songs tho. Another 3.4
Pearl Jam
5/5
Found my original cassette to listen to last night. It's seen some shit over the years! Some of these albums you've never heard before, some are familiar but not your favorite. Some you can live without. Some resonate in your soul and feel like home.
When Ten was released I wasn't immediately sold. Seattle sound was taking over. I wasn't ready to let go of what I was listening to initially. I don't remember how or why, but this ended up being played on repeat one summer in my van and it started a lifetime of loving this band. This spring I went to the screening of Dark Matter and listened to their new album in a conpletely dark movie theater🤷🏻♂️, so you can say I'm kinda a fan!
Elastica
3/5
I had heard the song Connection before & liked it, but never knew the title or artist name.
Looking at reviews, a lot of people say they are wla "Wire" ripoff band. Never heard of Wire either?? But in this app/list of albums....most of the Brit bands are my least favorite. Enjoyed this one though...but got repetitive towards the end. 3.2
Elvis Presley
4/5
Imagine me speaking in my Southern draw... My mama loved Elvis my daddy loved Elvis. Everybody in my family loved Elvis. Elvis is still alive. He is still eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches on an island in the Pacific.
I look back at the old videos of the king and it's just incredible the following he had, how passionate they were. When I was a kid one of my buddies moms had over stuff all over her house. You couldn't even take a crap without Elvis staring at you.
When I was really little we found my dad's old 45s and his record player in my grandmother's attic. I wish I had taken better care of it. We were out that record player and all those old 45s. Dad had the original 45 of jailhouse Rock an Blue suede shoes. I remember those being the best out of the collection along with a couple of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly records. I was so lucky to be able to listen to this stuff and fall in love with it at a young age. Some of the songs on this album arent Elviss best work, but had to be amazing in 1956. Rockers and ballads.
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
I love Daft Punk is playing in my house, my house. But this falls short of that hype. Still ok to listen to at the gym. I'm too old for all night raves, but the first track would be great for that.
Orange Juice
2/5
Didn't 💕 it, didn't hate it. Kinda boring
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I'm not been a big fan of the Stones over the years, and especially not the deep cuts on their albums. The local radio stations here have always over played them.
I've enjoyed some of their recent albums, which even surprised myself!
Anywho....Can't you hear me knockin is one of my fav all times songs. Must be my satin shoes and cocaine eyes??
The Beach Boys
5/5
Wouldn't it be nice and Sloop John B are two of my all time favs going back to early childhood. It was years later that I discovered the rest of the album.
Was lucky enough to see Brian's 2017 Pet Sounds tour. Both get five stars.
Dinosaur Jr.
2/5
Pretty safe to say this annoyed the fuck out of me this morning. I can see how of you're sloppy drunk and want to body slam someone this soundtrack could be beneficial, but ain't nobody got time for that today.
Only giving this a 2 because if it's too loud, you're too old.
Ray Charles
5/5
Great listening yesterday. One of my favorite albums I've never heard from this app.
It was a time machine, but still relevant and a classic style.
Great music for a dinner party in your mid century modern home.
Suzanne Vega
2/5
Sing please don't whisper. Sorry but a little boring.
The Kinks
4/5
This was great after hearing Suzanne Vega.
Live the sound of the Kinks. Sure sounds more recent than being from the late 60s! 3.6
Tricky
2/5
At first it sounded like one of the spice girls got drunk and wanted to venture off on her own and find herself as an artist. After that it wasn't too bad but there wasn't anything earth-shattering that told me to ever listen to it again. Another British breakthrough album that us Yankees just don't understand.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
Felt like I was trapped in the raiders of the lost ark movie
Sorry not my jam
Funkadelic
4/5
Somehow I missed this album while stuck in a space time Continuum. I won't let this happen again!
Feet don't fail me now, ha!
First song I wanted to be rolling down the street in my skates grooving to the best with big sunglasses on and my dancers behind me following along. 😜🥳
🛼 🕶️
Love the artwork
Can't beat nudity and comic strips fused together
Track 2 lacked the energy that I expected and had a strange off beat mess of a production.
Track 3 back to the funkadelly extreme that I expected. Can't understand what the fuck they're saying but I love it. Great psycho evil sounding guitar pedal steel.
Track 4 was a bunch of drunk & disorderly spoken word stuff. Annoying...my God was it too long! Lol that's what she said! 🤣
Track 5-talking neutron bomb people! Can't take the lead singer on this one seriously but it's fun.
Track 6 has a nice beat the kids can dance to.
Track 7 had a Neil Young/crazyhorse raunchy guitar and I loved it
Track 8 started with a bunch of yelling. But it got better, with some starsky and hutch '70s cop show music. More comic strip porn artwork. My mother wouldn't approve of.
Last track more of the same
Going 4 here because they dare to be different.
System Of A Down
3/5
Not many middle of the road reviews here...so I'm of course giving them one. Love or disgust for this album from the reviews I've read
I must admit it's not my everyday listen, but I enjoy some good pounding metal when I'm at the gym. My old school bands are Disturbed and Godsmack. These guys occasionally come up on the Turbo workout station, but it's always the same songs. Would prefer to hear more of this vs Korn or Tool...both of whom are over played on Sirius.
Over the top and loud, but it's what they strive to be!
The Jam
3/5
I'm giving them a 3 only because I didn't despise it. Kinda boring, but at least they sounded happy about it.
3/5
Ho hum
Sade
3/5
Didn't annoy me as much as a certain Pixie warrior. I always liked her voice, but kind of made fun of it back in the day. I had a pretty good impersonation that I haven't attempted in years. The pronunciation vs spelling still confuses me to this day. 🤷🏻♂️
Leonard Cohen
1/5
Would give this guy negative stars if I could. Just find this worse than nails on chalkboard. Please no more Cohen!! And yes I really sat through four songs.
Dirty Projectors
3/5
Loved that they try to do something different & do some experimentation with sounds .. . But ultimately it's like some drunk dudes in a garage just banging on stuff. A couple of the songs are really enjoyable though. 2.5 for being off the wall.
Television
3/5
Ok I meant to give these guys a 3... My review is under the talking heads unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️😫
Talking Heads
3/5
I enjoyed the first few songs in like the guitar riffs and sound in general. Towards the end I was sick of the guy's voice though. He seemed kind of whiny.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
I love her voice, always have. A friend met her years ago and she is as genuine as they come.
Most of the album is flat for me, but really enjoyed 3 of the songs.
G. Love & Special Sauce

Love the laid back atmosphere and groove on this album. It had been years since I've listened to it. Don't get all the harsh reviews. I like cold beverages too! 🍻
Black Sabbath
5/5
Oh hail thee Prince of Darkness!
I probably set a world record with war pigs and getting stoned. One of my favs of all time.
The kings of dark metal rising to power.
If you listen to this record backwards it tells you to worship Satan, but it might screw up your turntable and needle, so don't try it! 🤘🏻 😈
Grateful Dead
5/5
This is my favorite album by my favorite band.
I remember listening to it for the first time in college. I'd heard some of the songs previously, but never knew it had such a country/Americana sound to it. It was great listening to it yesterday and still enjoying it as much as day 1.
Kacey Musgraves
3/5
I spent the whole album trying to figure out if I like her voice. I'm still puzzled. When slow burn came out I kind of liked it, but the whole album is literally the same song.
Van Halen
5/5
Some friends of mine just the other night went to hear this cool cat blow, they said he sang so good that the roof fell in and he didn't even stop the show.
The ultimate car cruising partying album of the 80s. The last of the Diamond Dave era.
These guys built their signature sound and showmanship like no other band at the time. If it weren't for Thriller, this would have been number one for a few months in 84. Remember kids, we couldn't stream back then.
Steely Dan
4/5
Always thought that the guitar solo from Reelin in the years was epic and one of a kind.
This was my mom's fav band and we lived on Steely Dan and spaghettios as kids.
Silly me always thought Todd Rundgren sang Dirty Work.
The Doors
4/5
I still remember hearing riders on the Storm for one of the very first times. Coming back from Kings Island on a bus full of kids... It had to be around 1985. We had a boombox with detachable speakers in the back of the bus. We took turns putting the speakers up to our ears like headphones and listening to it. I think I played it about three or four times in a row. I had heard Jim Morrison sing before, but I must say his voice is so deep and dark it was almost scary to me as a kid. From that point on I fell in love with the doors.
Let's be honest a couple of these songs on this album are just terrible. But it has some greatness and elite psych rock as well.
LA woman is one of the best driving songs of all time. If you can't turn the volume up and want to drive 100 mph then you're not living man.
Riders on the Storm is a perfect blend of a jazzy drum beat, Ray manzarek steals the show with his keyboards that transport you to a higher level of consciousness...and Morrison's haunting vocals, they all mesh as one.
Texas Radio is in its own realm and universe.
One of the few times as an adult I wished I still had some acid and time to listen to this about 8 times in a row.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Overplayed on the radio and never got moved or impressed by their sound. Enjoyed Fogertys solo career later though. A lot of my favorite artists have a very identifiable sound, but CCR always sounded the same in every song to me.
I've always liked Lodi though. For years I never knew what they were saying. Got to drive through there a few years ago and finally got it!
Lucky to get a 3 here just because I'm in the Christmas spirit. 🎅🏻😂☃️🌲
Blur
2/5
Annoying.
Thank you blur for not ever growing up out of the '80s.
Suicide
1/5
I will not promote nor listen to a band with this name.
Maxwell
3/5
I'm not really supposed to talk about the lawsuit, but this guy stole my hairdo and we settled out of court.
Ok so I'm going along with a lot of the other reviews that I've read, and agreeing that this gets to be kind of bland song after song. Not much variation. But I will give it a three because I do think that it still sounds legitimately current. I would have never guessed this was released in 1996.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
5/5
Graham Nash always said that rock and roll can change the world.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Growing up hearing these harmonies in my house, on an old console TV stereo. There have never been four voices come together and mesh as one like CSNY.
I needed this album to remember that no matter how hard life can become, you can always feel strength and hope through song. RIP David and Merry Christmas.
Bee Gees
1/5
One of the worst albums that have come up on here in a while. One small decimal over Leonard Cohen awfulness.
Various Artists
4/5
So we had Suicide and Phil Spector in the same week.
Feeling sick to my stomach giving this a good review, trying to separate the fact that this guy was a convicted murderer.
I don't know much about his relationships with the artists involved, but everyone seems to have loved Darlene Love from what I've read.
The Ronnettes and her songs have always been favorites of mine since childhood, and I never knew of their connection to Spector until now. Giving this a 4 and not making them guilty by association.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
This was a tweener for me...3-4.
A very memorable fun song ..and the rest of the album was a good listen, but probably will not go back and listen again.
Aretha Franklin
5/5
We had the house rocking to this yesterday, and it felt like we were preaching to the choir in the front row of the first church of Aretha.
Radiohead
1/5
Radiohead and Oasis can suck it. Overrated
The Jam
2/5
Clash coat tail klingerz unite to make an album that sounds like every other English soft punk album!
💩😕👎🏻
Blur
2/5
Most of this I found agonizing to listen to. I'm starting to come down heavy on all these mediocre British bands, and it shows.
CHVRCHES
2/5
The first couple of songs would be great for a teen Disney movie. Couldn't make it through all of them.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
When I listen to this I can't help but hear Leonard Cohen, who has tortured us with numerous albums on this countdown.
I did my best to listen to this, but it's just not my cup of tea. I'm sure Nick's family and hometown are proud.
The Only Ones
2/5
Almost turned this off during the first song due to the dreadful vocals. Can't really say it got better, but it was less cumbersome. Some of the songs would have really shined with better vocals.
Also seemed like the recording and sound drifted vastly apart on different songs.
The Band
4/5
Thank the moon and stars for giving us the Band today.
Nice to have Spike Jones on the box. Dad rock to the rescue!
Pixies
3/5
This was ok but not enough to really grab my attention. I like Pixies yes I do, but this one is just meh.
The Shamen
3/5
Ok I always wanted to drop Ectasy and go to an all night rave. I'm too old for that shit now, maybe in the next life.
This would be a solid soundtrack for it. I'm guessing that I wouldn't be too picky high as a kite?🤷🏻♂️🤔
Nina Simone
3/5
I really enjoyed her voice and performance on most of these songs, with the exception of a couple weird ones.
Wire
3/5
Didn't love it didn't hate it. Listen to this while I was preparing dinner... Enjoyed the first couple of songs but then the rest of it just kind of all meshed together and it was over. And like a lot of the other British albums on here, at least this one did not annoy me. I'm sure this was really good when it was released, but this genre doesn't feel relevant today.
Waylon Jennings
4/5
Great early country sound, wish the stuff produced today still had more of this sound! Modern day country sounds so over produced.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
I get these guys might have been at the forefront of progressive something something, but this was painful to get through. And they didn't even sing welcome back my friends in the show that never ends step inside step inside.
Some of it was just clumsy and shrieking noise. Giving this a 1.6 due to name recognition only and their contribution to something at some point.
Run-D.M.C.
5/5
This is a tricky review. Going to try to keep it ill.
Best idea ever to bring Aerosmith out of the gutter.
What a great moment in time. This album broke barriers and was huge, as well it should have been. When I dance and raise my hands in my cubicle, you get 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The War On Drugs
2/5
Boring and bland, not really gripping song writing. Great band and sound, but I have plenty of vanilla in the cabinet
k.d. lang

8/3/89 Deer Creek Music center
...kd opened for Hank Jr. I remember her being a great performer with an exceptional voice. However, I'm ok with never hearing Constant Craving ever again. Obviously we're not reviewing either here...but I havent had much exposure to her work over the years. I saw she won some awards with Tony Bennett. I will have to give that record a listen.
This is not my bag at all, but she is so very talented and I'm sure this is one of her signature albums for her listeners.
Elton John
5/5
Got to see Candel in the Wind performed after the passing of Ryan White at FarmAid IV. What a great moment. Probably the quintessential Elton album.
The Monkees
2/5
I couldnt get into this one. A couple good songs, but a snooze fest for the most part. Kudos to them for making their own record though!💪🏻
Boards of Canada
3/5
This was kind of boring for the most part, but I dod find a few parts enjoyable.
I thought Roygbiv was the best song...had a nice groove to it.
Why did they put scary faceless people on the album cover? I'm going to have nightmares now, thank you.
Fela Kuti
4/5
Really enjoyed this, and one of the few on this list that was actually too short!
There were bonus tracks, but I typically only listen to the original releases.
Otis Redding
5/5
I want to be transported back in time! This was great.
Cornershop
3/5
Everyone needs a bosom for pillow!
Words to live by!! I've always heard this song but never knew the name of it or the band. Glad this came up yesterday.
Candy man is really good too.
I enjoyed this all except for their demantling of Norwegian Wood, which was horrendous. Still a solid 3.4
Talking Heads
4/5
One of the most recognizable voices and sounds from their time. And weirdest! They are one of a kind
James Brown
3/5
When I was a kid I loved Eddie Murphy on Saturday night live.
I kept wanting to hear JB say it's time to get into the hot tub... & getting hot in the hot tub. Other than that anticipation...it was just ho hum.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
I guess I like dirt.
Neil Young
4/5
Tough one for me. Has a couple of standouts, but as with anything with Neil...you take the good with the bad. I'm a love and follower of his entire catalog, but this album seems to go in different directions at times. Squeaking in to a four star at 3.59.
Happy Mondays
2/5
This makes me want to skip forward and not listen to all 9 songs, but the latest track wasnt too bad. Although it was a total ripoff of the Ticket to ride melody/chorus.
Jumbled up trainwreck right here y'all. More metal please! We need a good Judas Priest album for shits sake!
Violent Femmes
4/5
6/9/91 Buckeye Lake Music Center
Psychedelics for the win
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
I wish I had known this back in the day and smoked some Mary Jane while bouncing my speakers to it.
Dire Straits
4/5
Great mix of picking, country swing, blues and jamming...but still all Dire Straits signature sound.
Really surprised I've never heard this album. When I was a kid and Money for Nothing blew up MTV...nobody really knew much about the guys in headbands.
Metallica
5/5
Thank you album gods for listening to my plea for more metal. We got one of the best. Wasn't into Met Alicia originally..using that spelling because that's how I thought you pronounced it in 7th grade...but I sure jumped on the bandwagon here. And I'm ok with that.
1/5
The only thing this had going for it was the fact it's loud and seemed to be newer than the 60s. But even compared to the pink albums we've had it's trash.
The Thrills
3/5
Unfortunately the sound of the lead singer's voice is unappealing to me. Very breathy whiny and "forced?".
It's like the Crank yankers guys are in his ear telling him hey sing like this everyone will love it. Some of the music is good, and I thought the best vocal and song was the little rockabilly tune "Say it Ain't so". More of that please.
I was watching the video for One Horse Town and saw Topanga Ranch motel. I couldn't place it but knew the name sounded familiar. It's between Malibu and Santa Monica. Unfortunately it was destroyed earlier this month by the wildfires. So this video does have some awesome historical value! Bumping them up to a 3 for that alone might be controversial, but I'm pushing the boundaries today.
Aerosmith
4/5
Aerosmith was my first concert in 86.
It was the "Done with Mirrors" tour, a comeback album released to allow them to do a reunion tour. A very forgettable album, but the start of their late 80s/early 90s reign. You know you're old when this still feels like the new Aerosmith sound!
I remember thinking the drums were too loud on some of these songs, but most of this album is brilliant for a band that was down and out and needed something to be successful.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Wth is he saying at the end of in my time of dying? I've often wanted to look up the lyrics but I'm going to keep it a mystery 😉🤣🤘🏻.
This album has always meant a lot to me... And I've discovered different tracks through the years. Kashmir was always a favorite of mine, and I love the guitar riff in the opening song, custard pie was always a not so famous favorite of mine. Disc 2s the Wonton Song is another one with an exceptional riff that is a hidden gem.
Animal Collective
2/5
I can see where people into this genre may love it. After track 6 any further listening wouldn't have swayed my judgment. I struggle through half of track 8.
Track 7 really really was annoying because of all the jumbled up mixed vocals. If the narrator has things to say that are I profound, you sure don't hear it through the mixed up jumbled voices. The music alone would warrant a 3.
The Streets
1/5
Is this Lilly Allen's little brother making fun of her? If so, needs more cuss words. That would be more fit!😜🤣👍🏻
Almost felt like a bad Saturday night skit that the Dick in the Box guys did an entire album and were selling on the Ronco label!
Lastly seemed like a cheesy movie where they have a rapper doing an album and it's like TV movie grade compared to a theatrical release. I was cracking up most of the time then got annoyed.
The White Stripes
4/5
2003 and this still seems somewhat new to me. I've been stuck in a time warp for years now. This was an album I wanted to get to know & never did make it happen.
There are some real standouts here, but some I could be ok never hearing again.
Always thought it was impressive that two people could fill the air with so much sound.
Leftfield
2/5
How did the appeal of musical tastes get so far apart after the Boston Tea Party? It's amazing to me.
Reading the summary for this album I was excited. The first song had promise. I'm even at the gym on a bike. This is what you should be listening to right? Well it drove me crazy by track 8 and I wanted to be done. Sorry 9 10 11 for not giving you a full listen. Your siblings were simply too unruly.
Guided By Voices
2/5
This was a tough listen.
Sound quality almost AM radio-ish. That may be a compliment.
Was hard to get into the music because it seemed like a garage band. Other than that💯loved it
Bonnie Raitt
4/5
So this album had me looking up Grammy winners from the last 40 some yrs. Almost forgot this picked up a win. She had other nominations too after this one.
She was up against one of my favorite albums of all time(Full Moon Fever), and another one I was listening to at the time(End of the Innocence). Personally I would have picked Full Moon Fever, as it holds up better today as timeless.
That doesn't take away from what this album is and was...it had great playing and songs. But top to bottom a couple were cheesy. Have a Heart always seemed manufactured to me. It didn't feel like that one fit her style. Nick of Time and thing called love are just incredible. They both come in at 3:52!? I just saw Herbie Hancock on TV last week and he played on track 10 here.
Also shout out to the Traveling Wilburys that year, another nomination for album of the year.
Carole King
5/5
Had no idea she wrote a couple of these songs. Loved almost every track. It's as old as me, but sounds like it could have been recorded last week. Going to visit her music shop in Stars Hollow someday.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Might be one of the best albums of all time but I cringed when it came up yesterday. Just never was my jam.
The Darkness
3/5
Really enjoyed how this started out... I thought it was going to be enjoyable. Then the lead singer started to sing. Just not aesthetically pleasing to listen to for me. However, great band. Find a 20 something Sebastian Bach & let 'er rip!
Jeff Buckley
2/5
I wanted to like/love this album, but I just don't. Gave it a second listen this morning and went backwards vs thinking I might like it. Got out of the shower to some moaning & groaning in one song...then Lilac wine came on and I couldn't get to the living room fast enough to shut it off.
I want to like sappy emotional stuff...and thought maybe I have an unconscious bias against it. Last night I asked myself what sappy emotional song do I want to go to sleep to? I picked Counting Crows Sullivan Street. It grabs a hold of me and makes me feel like I'm part of the song and relate to the singers perspective. Jeff Buckley to me, just isn't convincing in that regard. Might be a messed up way to view this...but I'm sure many say the same thing about Adam Duritz...but for this beat writer music critic, he's my go to sappy emotional music...not Jeff Buckley.
Tom Tom Club
3/5
I loved the first track and most of this album...some of it is kinda weird..but that's ok!
Just under a 4 for me.
M.I.A.
3/5
Ok I must say I nearly shut this off early but let it rip.
If anything, it's different and I've never heard anything like it.
Sadly, to struggle through it again would be a chore. Going with a 3 for the sole reason it seemed innovative to me. But in a good direction? Questionable
....would have been better with Rod Serling at the beginning warning that you're entering the Twilight Zone.... ✨
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
Ok so I wanted to like this more, not that I didn't...but wanted it to be great. The lead singer has a great voice but I got lost in some of the arrangements...still solid but not stellar.
Little Simz
1/5
This was not enjoyable.
