Reviews (page 2 of 12)

Goated album didn't know it came out in the 60s

So much more ingenious and interesting than their contemporaries. Playing and arrangements are tight and exhilarating.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It was a pretty easy listen!

Bloody brilliant 👏

Another stones gem that brightens up after the rivieting Paint It Black as an opener.

genial

Outstanding early stones

Not bad

Wicked, love the Stones but especially this era... UK version seems to be a bit better than the North American release

It's a classic - what else is there to say?

The versatility on this release. From the baroque folk of “Lady Jane” to the blues jam “I’m coming home”…Incredible stuff!

When I was an undergraduate my girlfriend and I went to see a performance called "The Important Fragility Of Whiteness" and one of the things that stuck out to me was they fully took on how much black culture and black music Elvis Presley stole. The refrain from that part of the performance was "If we can find a white man who can sing and dance like a black man we will make a million dollars". I really wished then as I do now that would have also said the same thing about The Rolling Stones. Their entire early work was based on stealing black R&B music from the American south. White people performing black music to make it palatable for white America. Now, don't get me wrong I love the Rolling Stones and this album has like 5 bangers with 4 opening the album. I don't think that there are any bad songs on this album and it's just great.

Excelente. TRI x HBB Kai.

Best Song: Paint it Black I haven't listened to as much early Stones as I thought. I am really enjoying it as it is less polished and more raw. Great stuff, plus who doesn't like Paint it Black. 5/5.

Very Stones. I think this is an artifact of how popular they have been, but it's not clear to me which of all the versions I should be listening to. The inclusion or not of paint it black is quite relevant. Regardless this has some incredible tracks. Under My Thumb alone may almost be worth a 5? Especially considering the pieces are also good.

The musical instruments are very nice

(5) classic tracks that define who and what The Rolling Stones were, are, and forever will be.

Awesome album. The US version has paint it black which is even better!

Finished the album and immediately had to restart and listen again.

Everyone who has an opinion about rock & roll music says that this is the album where The Rolling Stones really became The Rolling Stones. Who am I to argue? With songs like “Paint It Black”, “Mother’s Little Helper”, and “Under My Thumb”, this record displays an era of The Stones where they felt comfortable being themselves and not just a blues band. It’s a record that really predicts their future. “Doncha Bother Me” sounds like something off of Exile on Main St, “Going Home” sounds like it would be at home on Let It Bleed, and so on.

Bester opener bisher...Stoner Forever!

I'll bite and write a few words in regards to this album. Of course it's great. I think most would agree. So is it their first classic album. If so then it took time for the Stones to catch heat. It marked the beginning of a pretty much flawless 3 album order. Between the Button and Flowers being the other 2. This may be favorite incarnation of the Stones. Bryan Jones has more influence than it sometimes sounds. I Her Majesty's Satanic Request so the stones in my opinion were riding a wave a top the world for quite some time

Another great stones album.

Amazing album No one can really dislike it Very iconic sound

Rock n' roll baby

loved it

Good tunes. Took me back in time.

love them

Súper clásico necesario en una biblioteca

Litening to the US version, opening with Paint it Black (though the cover here shows 'UK'). This album is not universally brilliant but contains a handful of classics, and this was 1966 so there's a mix of the early decade rock n roll and a taste of what was to come. Great stuff. Probably shy of a 5 but rounding up to rebalance some of the silly 1 reviews....

This was the first Rolling Stones album that really knocked my socks off. However, this was one instance that I like the U.S. over the UK version. But, I could never understand why the U.S. companies edited the UK versions to make an extra buck. That aside, this had some brilliant tunes-Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb, Paint It Black (on the U.S. version). But, the two tunes that still kill me every time are Flight 505 and High and Dry.

Oh Lady Jane, you are Under My Thumb.

This is more of a 4.5 but because it’s the Rolling fucking Stones I’ll round up.

Mick and Keith start really writing their own songs and the Stones take off

Classic Stones that stands the test of time for me!

The good on this one completely makes up for anything that might feel like filler. All-time classic.

Love the first 4 songs on this album

Genial.

Aftermath - The Rolling Stones One of the Big Four of rock music (the other 3 would be The Beatles, The Who and Elvis Presley) with one of their very best albums... add it up. Chances are you like The Rolling Stones and on the off chance you don't then you're a lost cause and nothing I say is going to change that so you're on your own. As essential as any album to have ever been released.

This is a great album. Love the back story on the album name.

Always great.

>>> The Beatles

almost dipped under but so good could i write poetry to this? y

An all time classic this album!

An early set of classics from the boys

Excelente

Frühe Rolling Stones. Keine bekannten Titel. Aber recht gut!

Love the early bluesy stuff from the Stones, not sure the message in Under My Thumb holds up anymore but what a banger! Favourite tracks: Under My Thumb & Out Of Time Definitely worth a relisten. 5/5

Derogatory, snide, and a bit dangerous (especially for '66). This one sort of fell in my lap because it seems a little adjacent to the punk and alternative indie stuff I enjoy. Frankly, just an enjoyable and cool record even though the band would soon put out more consistent material.

Perhaps the vital early Stones album. It’s a soul album. Cynical, dark, an echo from within the abyss, confirming just how dark it is where we’re all headed. Escalation fears. Out of time. High and dry. What a drag it is, getting old.

A few songs I hadn't heard before. Solid album

i mean, it has out of time, i like this song so much i would give this 5 stars even it the rest were nursery rhymes

This and Beggars Banquet are the best 60s Stones albums. I love this album front to back.

Love this album.

This might be my favourite album so far!! What a brilliant band (and still are). Hit after hit and all amazing.

This is the first album where all the songs were written by Jagger/Richards. The others were primarily by others. This cements that duo as an unstoppable force of writing that will dominate into the late 70's before they kinda fall off in quality IMO. Great record. Great singles with amazing entourage to surround those.

Probably my favorite early Stones album. Mother's Little Helper is still a relevant song, though it can now be Father's Little Helper as well. Going Home always seemed to be a weird diversion but it's still a good song overall. There is some misogyny on here but I have never found it offensive because a song like Stupid Girl is intended to be a pre-punk putdown of the women Mick Jagger dated. It's a sneering example of the narrator just blaming his partner(s) for his own failings, as it is clear through the lyrics he's just pissed off and the insults are so base. This is just a bitter album (and Paint it Black isn't even on this version) and I am here for it. I like the edge the Stones have. I'm a Stones guy over a Beatles guy, so take my comments for what they are worth, but I believe the diversity the Stones show on here is worthy of the praise the Beatles would receive at the time. Doncha Bother Me is classic blues and taps into the band's roots. Brian Jones is really starting to show his brilliance on Aftermath. The difference in the UK and US version is striking, as Paint it Black and Mother's Little Helper deserve to be on the same album together. Mother's Little Helper Lady Jane Under My Thumb Stupid Girl Out of Time It's hard to beat an album with just those hits on it. Very much recommend, even with Going Home (which really was a test run for their future longer songs) stuck in the middle of the album.

top 3 stones album?

Classic

I’m up here with no warning ⚠️ 4.5

milestone

10/10. It's a fantastic album.

Amazingly I have never listened to his album before - but have heard and enjoyed many of its tracks before. This makes it a genuinely great album as it contains many iconic tracks.

Classic, Stones like Stones.

This is we're the Stones found their sound, it's original and it sounds amazing. Does not stand the test of time very well to be honest, but I'm not here to judge society in the 60s.

So incredibly good. Hard to believe all these songs are on one album.

Jeez, some of the lyrics really haven't aged well, but musically this album is quite an achievement. Catchy songwriting, unique instrumentation (for the time), lots of variety, and a gritty, dark feel to the music. An unnecessarily long closing track brings this down a notch. 4.5/5.0: Excellent

I have no clue how I missed this album growing up, but this was stellar

Two of my favourite Rolling Stones songs, this album has energy.

Great album!

ok well... undeniable

I feel their best albums were their early ones and this is a good example. A band that did 6 years of really good rock influenced by blues and 44 years of pop rock crap. I think they are overrated but this album is one of the best ones and its really great like their only 5 star to me. As good as exile on mainstreet is I feel this is a better flowing album.

Classic

excellent !!

The most teeny boppy I ever heard the stones so far and somehow I liked it - they add their layer of cool over it which drives it up a notch in quality and makes their lesser contemporaries feel one dimensional. What I’ve learnt in this exercise is that the Stones are good and I like them.

Geez, this is great.

This version has Mothers Little Helper rather than Paint It Black.

A good collection of bluesy Rolling Stones songs. 5 stars or A-.

Gran disco. Hasta mañana.

Pretty fun, still listening to more rock. Seems to use more folky string instrumentals as well as hard rock guitars for some exciting songs. Breezy lyrics to sing along to, are great. Definitely see why it's a classic, besides the big lead single

The best rolling stones album.

Yea this is great. Has some some of their most overused songs in movies

Even better if you listen to the mono version

Aftermath is the fourth studio album from the Rolling Stones, and the first of entirely original material. This was the first milestone in the extensive songwriting career of Jagger and Richards, and this album is regarded as the Stones' first masterpiece. These songs are a development from the band's early focus on blues and R&B standards, and incredible example of the sound that made them the biggest rock band in the world. This album captures an early rendition of the Stones' sound, with Jagger's brash swagger, and Richard's catchy, edgy guitar riffs. Brian Jones added elements not often found in popular music, like a sitar and a dulcimer. "Satisfaction," released the year prior, had made the band into stars, and this work started them on the path to become one of the most influential acts of popular music.

Bluesy greatness. No comments.

A revolutionary counterpart to the Beatles (the old discussion). In the time - context a clear 5-Star!

Great record!

So many classics

Get album full of hits

Early favorite

Wasnt familiar with this album; can tell its early stuff and I actually like it better than some of the later pop-ish

This record is an early Stones classic and has influenced rock and roll to this day. All original tracks, some edgier lyrics (for 60’s rock) and great exploration with different instrumental sounds. I’m not as familiar with the UK release so it was a great listen. Lady Jane is the only track I can live without.

The Stones break out from covers to become the best rock band ever.

9.9/10.

5 satrs

Although I prefer to adhere to the UK Beatles catalogue since it seems less manufactured and closer to the artists' intent, I'm tempted to reach for "Paint It, Black" (from the US release) to include here because it edges Aftermath into timelessness — of their early singles, "Mother's Little Helper" and "Under My Thumb" are already two of my favorite Stones entries. Really great record and an important document in rock and roll and British invasion.

Awesome

Classic

nice!!!!!!!!!

Must’ve been mind blowing at the time

Know them and their songs.

I actually really enjoyed this album and I'm not even a big fan of the Stones. It's really good.

Starts with an absolute classic, follows it with a dumb fun song. I'm familiar with this songs so I'm more enthralled by the order and decisions made with the album as a whole. I didn't got the Beatles comparisons until I listened to this album, the pase feels Beatle-esque. Going home closing just makes sense

Really good, paint it black is awesome! First RS Album I listened too, it was really good! Better than expected.

This is a banger! No more filling half the album with covers of American blues classics. At this point the Stones have truly come into their own, defining themselves as a creative force and establishing a foundation for what is to come. This is truly listening to history here.

Gran disco.

All time great!!!

I like the Rolling Stones. I like all of the songs. Stand-out: I Am Waiting

Often thought of as the first album where they really become the Rolling Stones. They say that you are either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan. While I am staunchly in the Beatles side of this argument, when the Stones are on they are hard to beat. Paint it Black is one of the GREAT rock and roll songs. The rest of the album holds pace with it and shows off just what they can do.

A true classic.

This album is great and Stones rock.

Rock and roll at it's finest

Great album

Gran disco.

This is a wonderful stop on the journey of the Rolling Stones becoming the Rolling Stones. Some very cool boundary-pushing creativity here making for some very classic songs.

This album is chock full of great music (both the US and UK editions). I enjoyed both albums. Terrific!

Loved it

LOVED THIS!

Awesome

Solid album, loved the use of different instruments.

This, young listeners, was what all the fuss was about: Jagger and Richard emerging as a song-writing pair of immense significance on a landmark album for both them and popular music. With Brian Jones on marimba, dulcimer etc., etc.. (Shame about the casual misogyny).

Great album by a great band

"What a drag it is getting old..".they had no idea when they penned those words. This is an old fave for me, Aftermath, 4x4- great albums. I like the Stones, what's not to like, topical, you can sing along, they mix it up, plenty of hooks. The songs aren't sappy love songs. Flight 505- "of course I'll have a drink." These guys defined rock and roll and incredibly, they are still at it. The randomizer has been giving me a lot of Geezer Rock lately. 4.5 stars for this classic, I may round up.

Classic, loved it and some different genre varieties in this album

One of my intros to the Stones. Thank you Twisted Metal Black.

I picked up my mono Australian pressing for 2 bucks at Ashwoods Record Store sometime in the late 60’s. Before that, I was familiar with the single released in Australia - Mother’s Little Helper / Lady Jane & the odd album track that made it to radio at the time - Under My Thumb, Stupid Girl & Take It Or Leave It. I also knew Out Of Time, but the Chris Farlowe cover, not the Stones’ original. As for the other eight tracks, I didn’t hear them until that visit to Ashwoods. I doubt if the eleven & a half minutes of Goin’ Home was ever played on 60’s radio. The first Stones’ record with all Jagger/Richard compositions, this album has a diversity that, among British bands, only The Beatles had been able to achieve by this time. Side 1 is so good - a great band hitting its stride. And Side 2 is so diverse - High And Dry even provides some acoustic blues. This album sounds as good as it did when I first heard it.

A good album from a legendary band. The earlier stuff was very bluesy. I believe a lot of their music is influenced by black American blues. Classic. Enjoyed it.

brilliant.

Classic Masterpiece. 🧑‍🍳

Classic! Lots of energy but also bluesy

I like it a lot.

What a track to start an album with! Couple of genuinely awesome Stones tracks on here. This is probably their best.

A true masterpiece. And this one has so many good songs. And most of the songs I didn’t know where also very cool.

I forgot how much I like this one

I must admit, the Rolling Stones were not a must listen for me when I was younger. I grew to appreciate their music as I got older. I sort of think they need to stop now, like most bands after 50 years of playing. With that said, I still think that Lady Jane is such a great listen, and this is an overall stellar album. Peace.

Such a great album. The Stones moving out of the early stage and starting to experiment.

love the stones

Stones great mudic

The Rolling Stones has always been a band with a couple of nice songs but never a band where I sat down to listen to a whole album. I see now that this was wrong. Aftermath is a wonderful album, one of their first as far as I know. There is a wonderful freshness in the songs and it contains quite a lot of their well known pieces. Even if only for this album, taking part in this journey of 1001 albums has paid off.

Crisp, solid, classic rock.

Loved the Stones’ oldies. Didn’t recognize the first few songs.

A masterpiece ❤️

The Stones become the stones. The evolution is almost complete on the Aftermath of the British Invasion album. You can hear the American soul and R&B influence, the British cool of Brian Jones and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards' rage and energy. All bundled up and ready to go. Great songs that set them apart from the other British acts and catapult them into the land they will occupy and dominate.

Crazy how much they sound like The Rolling Stones from the get go

great album Paint It Black !!!!!!!!!

A really enjoyable album, I liked the style of music. My favourite songs from the album were Paint it black and Doncha Bother Me.

Favourite Rolling Stones album so far

UK version > US Version

a bit too easy

Great album. Love it!

I also want to paint it black.

The first super solid stones album with wonderful Brian Jones contributions.

I've never considered myself a Stones fan, but that may have changed after listening to this album. I loved it all. Obviously, I was familiar with Paint it Black, but I also feel like that song in particular was a bit ahead of its time. I had no idea the song was that old. And it certainly stands out on this album, IMO. That said, the whole album was quite enjoyable. I'll probably listen to this again.

Pegou-me totalmente ao começar com Paint it, Black. Melhore expressão do rock produzido pelos Stones.

Some of my favorites

Such a great and innovative album of solid stones.

This is one of those albums I've kind of heard already, because it's full of bangers that have appeared *everywhere* over the years. Heard in the order they were designed to, it becomes even more apparent just what a revelation this must have been upon release. The Stones have always been cool to me, and this just cements that coolness even further.

This is quintessential 1960's rolling stones The opening with Paint it Black in the US version is widely different with Mother's Little Helper in the UK version. I think I like the UK version better.

4.5 stars. Fantastic album. Classic rock defined. Standouts are "Paint It Black" and "Under My Thumb".

A mix of 60’s pop shuffles with some delta style blues.

Cool album, with some of the Stones darker more experimental stuff on there.

Some classic songs here. Some exotic instruments. Nice sound.

Album 148 of 1001 Rolling Stones - Aftermath Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Track : Paint It, Black I like the classic Stones. Their early years are my favorites. This is the first with all original tracks, including 2 of their bigger hits. Never go wrong with early Stones.

Wonderful album! I was raised on Beatles records, not Rolling Stones records, so it's great discovering an early Rolling Stones classic. I listened to the U.K. version as well.

Legendary album, wasn't sure if I should listen to the U.K. or U.S. version, so I listened to them both. A lot of the Stones' best known songs are on here, and the rest could be blues classics in their own right.

4.5/5 some good bangers.

Mega!!!

Can listen at any time. All great. All.

A 5 for the UK version ("Mother's Little Helper" & "Out of Time") & a 5 for the US version ("Paint It Black.").

Love most of the Stones music and this album has some greats for sure! The production of this recording has some fun stereo imaging emphasizing instrumental separation! Cool stuff!

Vinilo, sin duda.

Gran disco.

What good enjoyed

first truely great stones record

For me great combination of their bluesy-music they started with and the later style as in Beggars' Banquet.

Classic

Such a killer record. Always worth coming back to this one.

Great, the ending song "Going Home" made me give five star.

Aftermath shows a much more mature Rolling Stones who have found their sound and are moving beyond their roots as a straight blues band. The songwriting is better, the playing is tighter, the music is more exploratory, and the album is incredibly cohesive. Even their long jams are better structured and more interesting.

The Stones have always been the bad boys against the Beatles loveable mop-tops image. I'm finding i'm steering more to the dark side now......... This album is full-force and full of powerful hits, sneering lyrics, cold dark imagery. All these years later it can still evoke anger and controversy. The album begins with the newer progressive works and then finishes with the older style blue/pop numbers they were known for. This was a turning point.

Good stones album some of my favorite stones songs

excellent sound, great masterpiece.

Fantastic album, so many good tracks, catchy lyrics, great melodies

Never listened to the Stones much, but this was great! Old school rock and roll

Never listened. Some meh songs in there but love the sound. You can def see the jazz and blues "influence" they borrowed from here.

Innovative, an instant classic with so many signature and hummable hooks. The opening track with it's eastern influence is arresting to the ear.

Sonzao massa dale

6th May 2022 Listened while working in the front room before going camping for the weekend with sav and sally in tonbridge. Classic, blues roots on their shoulders with Jagger yelping and squealing at his best.

Love it…60’s music at it’s finest, and it only gets better

Vinilo, sin duda.

Its probably top6 Stones albumes 4 m3

Love the rolling stones

I really liked the album. Chill but upbeat music, cool music!

godt !!

Great listen, happy this one came appeared.

A classic

So good! Great early Stones!

Paint It Black and Under My Thumb you say? Yes, of course I am giving it a 5. Bet Charlie Watt hated it though, absolutely hated the Stone that fella, absolutely loved the jazz.

love several songs on it, it's not boring, pretty good album

Excellent. Love the stones.

5/5 - Classic stones

Pure Stones. Breakthrough album. THank you.

The classic Brian Jones era Stones release. Gorgeous mid 60’s classic

Classic Stones

Best Stones' record and one of best rock albums of all time. Just perfect, from start to finish

very fun and popular

really good album. It aged very well!

loved it

Album #139, The Rolling Stones, Aftermath ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Arguably the beginning of the Stones’ ascent into the stratosphere of pure quality. It’s a very odd album. A very unusual one. For the most part it’s acoustic folk with a rock and blues edge, a bit like Buddy Holly in places, but there are all sorts of other elements going on. Strange chord progressions, unusual sounds from odd instruments… it really feels like Brian Jones and his nuttier, more Canterbury-inspired influences are all over this record. And it’s a better album for it. Another great element is Mick Jagger. I think this is one of his best albums vocal wise. He just sounds fantastic. There’s loads of variety and passion throughout. Weirdly, I’ve always felt he’s properly rated as a frontman but slightly underrated as a singer. His voice is so distinctive, and I think he sounds brilliant here, especially on songs like Think and Out of Time. He even adopts a completely different style on Lady Jane, and it really works. But, it’s also hard to ignore some of the lyrics. I’ve questioned the misogyny of a lot of hip-hop albums on this list, so it would be a bit hypocritical not to mention it here as well. However you want to look at it, this can be quite a nasty album towards women. I know there’s artistic licence involved, satire and a lot of it is tongue in cheek, but it still comes across as pretty obnoxious, petty and adolescent at times. I don’t think those lyrics have aged particularly well. The Stones always seem to get a bit more of a pass for this kind of stuff because the songs themselves are often just so good. Brown Sugar is probably the best example of that. It’s a ten-out-of-ten song with lyrics that are, at the very least, highly questionable. All that being said, I do think it’s a mixed bag of a record. The Stones went on to make some extraordinary albums after this, and I don’t think this quite reaches those heights. It just doesn’t have enough consistently great songs. For me, it ranges from five-star songs down to songs that are almost two stars. The highlights are Under My Thumb. An absolute cracker, with questionable lyrics. Then, one of my all-time favourite Stones songs, Out of Time, which has an absolutely brilliant chorus and isn’t afraid to just keep throwing it at you. There’s Think and then there’s I Am Waiting, one of their strangest little folk songs and a great example of just how weird this album can get. But the rest of it is much more uneven and forgettable. I was reading that Goin’ Home was one of the first extended improvised jams by a pop group, and if that’s true, fair fucking play to them. That’s a genuinely impressive thing to have done. I also read that it became the longest pop song ever released at the time, overtaking Dylan’s Desolation Row. The problem is, it feels like an exercise in writing the longest pop song ever rather than writing the best one. It’s not even particularly meandering. It just kind of plods along. It’s not especially sexy, even though I think it’s trying to be, and I just find it a really boring song. It’s slap bang in the middle of the album as well, and it takes up a huge chunk of what is already quite a long record. Long improvised jams went on to be much more interesting with the likes of Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Then you’ve got songs like Take It or Leave It, which I could literally take or leave. It’s an odd song and fits on the record, but it’s not particularly good either. Overall though, this feels like Brian Jones’ last really great contribution to a Stones album, and he does a great job with it. A light four for me.

The top review is baffling. Dude, even Stones fans hate Mick Jagger. You're not impressing anyone. With that said, I do like that they included this album as it's seldom discussed compared to their later 60s, post-Brian Jones albums. Jones, as problematic as an individual as he was, really had a keen ear for incorporating instruments such as the sitar, the marimba, the koto, the dulcimer, and more to add really wild textures to their blues/roots sound. Can't really stand a lot of the sexist lyrics in the songs, but as someone that's read up on this band time and again, a lot of this was done to provoke. Still outdated, though. However, "Out of Time" and "Mother's Little Helper" are timeless classics of the 60s, both in content and in sound. Overall, the album shows this band coming together in a more mature, cohesive way, and I'm saying this as a non-Stones fan. Unrelated to the album: I feel that a lot of people are using this website to simply trash bands that they feel are unworthy of inclusion. This is a list of POPULAR MUSIC. This is not a RYM dumping ground. I don't listen regularly to most albums on the list, but I'm here for my personal education and to learn about important historical, cultural, and commercial trends in Anglocentric pop music. Too specific? Then this project is not for you! Sorry, just felt the need to rant, I'm just constantly surprised by the reviews on this site.

We;; afraid I can add little. While not Lennon McCartney, Keith and Mick not far behind. I can also see how they can be somewhar off putting. But some stone (get it?) cold classics and off they go.

Has a few all time classic songs on it and the other songs are not just filler. They're also great too. My appreciation for The Rolling Stones has grown.

All the feminism leaving my body the second I hear that marimba

Not my favourite Rolling Stones album but I like it

Ok music. Vote high for the stones

It's the bloody fookin' Stones innit?

What a time, and what time was this made?

Classic rolling stones, you can really see how they bridged the gap between old school rock and roll and more modern sounds

An iconic album

Very nice

Enjoyable album!

Probably a 5 if it had Paint It Black on it (the UK version does not). Overall a very strong album but too many ho-hum songs to make it a 5.

I couldn’t decide and listened to both the British and US release of Aftermath. It doesn’t matter as far as the rating is concerned, but I really enjoyed Mothers Little Helper. America missed out. This record is from my favourite Stones era. It’s probably the start of this era. Brian Jones really added another dimension to the band and made their songs unpredictable and exciting. The album received criticism for being misogynistic and honestly, that’s pretty well deserved.

It's fine. What I imagined a RS album from this time to sound like. Would have been a 3 without Paint It Black

This is making me rethink my "not really my thing" position on the Rolling Stones - really enjoyed this

I think I really like early Stones! Enjoyed this a lot. Nothing on here too commercial or over played. Feels like this marks the transition from a Beatles copycat to a proper band with their own style and image.

Under My Thumb is one of the very best songs of The Stones. Goin' Home is longer than eleven minutes - way too long, othervive the whole album is fine.

Catchy and classic! Not loving the misogyny though

I found out after the fact that the UK and US releases have some differences in songs, I had listened to the US one. The openers on both (Paint It Black US, Mother's Little Helper UK) are my fav Stones songs and the rest was good stuff too

- Yeah, I'm vibing with this, but like what's up with the different release versions?

Solid album with a lot of good and recognizable tracks. A worthy listen all around.

Now this is fun! (4)

Interesting that I only heard the US version of this album before. This is the UK version. A bit longer and good content but not the same as the US release. The stereo mix is indicative of early stereo recordings where instruments are panned to one side or the other. Once I got past that I enjoyed this album. 4-stars for me.

I like this more than the Beatles album from the day before, but still neither hit my top albums. Really good stuff, probably would be more impactful if I had heard it when it first came out.

Great album.

Great!

Probably falls in the 3.5 range. Can absolutely hear where their sound is headed.

Even the bad songs are good. Not yet at their outstanding best but still many classics, plus several more flashes of the brilliance to come.

Just because the stones are the stones, doesn't make every album great. This one is quite good though.

I probably liked this more than any of their other non-early stuff I've heard.

Hard to give an album with two of the best tracks of all time, anything lower than a 5 but the rest of the songs leave much to the imagination.

Amazing album, i either knew or was immediately singing along with the first 6 or 7 songs, but I felt the back of the album was a touch weaker, and would have been improved by swapping Paint It Black back in, like they did on the US release.

I like it. 4 stars

Really good album. Loved starting with 'Paint it Black' and ending with 'Home.' Real honkey tonk feel and jam session vibes.

This album was really enjoyable to listen to.

What makes Aftermath great is not polish. It is expansion. The Stones are still dirty, sarcastic, and sexually combative, but now they are also more texturally ambitious and more compositionally confident. Brian Jones is a huge part of that leap: the album is full of unusual colors for a Stones record of the period, including marimba, dulcimer, and sitar, which helps explain why the record feels like more than just tougher blues-rock.

Ok, yes, some of these lyrics aged like your finest milks. But it's still the Stones.

Keith and Mick

"Aftermath" captures The Rolling Stones attempting to prove they were more than just a rhythm and blues outfit. To a large extent, they succeed with tracks such as 'Mother's Little Helper', 'Lady Jane', 'Under My Thumb', and 'Out of Time'. However, in branching out, they lose some of the primal quality that typically identifies the band's signature sound. Even when they attempt to return to those blues roots, the results feel slightly jarring against the more experimental material. On this record, tracks like 'Doncha Bother Me', 'Goin' Home', 'It's Not Easy', and 'Flight 505' and especially those tracks after 'Out of Time' feel somewhat like filler. Note: 'Paint It Black' is absent from the UK version of the album. At the time of release, UK industry practice avoided including hit singles on LPs to ensure fans weren't "paying twice." Typically, albums were preceded by a non-album lead single, with perhaps one further track taken from the LP later. In contrast, 'Paint It Black' opened the US edition, replacing 'Mother's Little Helper'. Ultimately, "Aftermath" comes across as a slightly schizophrenic album, as if two inner voices are struggling for dominance. This conflict hampers the overall cohesion. The more adventurous tracks might have been better suited to an EP, leaving the LP to focus on the core 'Stones sound'. This lack of focus prevents a very good album from reaching a higher status. Four stars. Side one - UK Version 1 "Mother's Little Helper" (5/5) 2 "Stupid Girl" (3/5) 3 "Lady Jane" (5/5) 4 "Under My Thumb" (5/5) 5 "Doncha Bother Me" (3/5) 6 "Goin' Home" (3/5) Side two - UK Version 1 "Flight 505" (4/5) 2 "High and Dry" (3/5) 3 "Out of Time" (5/5) 4 "It's Not Easy" (3/5) 5 "I Am Waiting" (3/5) 6 "Take It or Leave It" (3/5) 7 "Think" (3/5) 8 "What to Do" (3/5) Total - 51 Average - 3.64 316/1001 170/316 albums reviewed were new to me.

Very strong songs, consistently good throughout, loved loved loved the experimentation in regards to instrumentation and genres, slightly misogynistic lyrics that were a little uncomfortable

classic Stones therein, 3 songs we've heard a thousand times or so and some copycat blues color by numbers to fill out the rest of it 3.5/5

Stupid Girl brings the album down. One of their worst songs, and it somehow comes after Paint it Black on the album. Overall, quality varies with an end song that sounds too much Gloria, but it’s still a solid Stones album

Hard to argue with this one. Peak Stones?

A couple of all timers are from this album, Paint it Black and Mother’s Little Helper.

my new favorite band

Pretty good Stones album. Not all the songs were winners, but still an enjoyable listen overall. Paint It Black would have been my favorite Track, but I listened to the UK version so I will not count it. Favorite Track - Mother's Little Helper Least Favorite Track - Lady Jane ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The stones are a good band, iconic and classic. That being said, this album was an above average record for the 60s, I personally like them more than athe Beatles.

One of many reasons why the Stones are legends

Not among my favorite Stones albums.

4 stars I hadn’t realized I had never listened to the UK version of this album, or the original, until this listen. I own it on vinyl but never played it. I think it’s because I’ve heard the US version and handful of times and always felt that it was fine but did not meet the hype. But hearing the original version was different. I enjoyed it more. Somehow “Stupid Girl” sounded better coming after “Mother’s Little Helper” than “Paint it Black.” The album flows well. Putting the 10 minute track at the end of side 1 vs end of the album was actually a really good move. It gives the second half reset energy, coming off of the long slog. And “I Am Waiting” is such a good song. Maybe it’s because listened to the Rushmore soundtrack a lot in high school. Anyway, so far this is the first Stones album that has been better than just ok.

another classic rokssc

Wasn’t familiar with the whole album, but wow, great record!

Good album

Honestly I'm kind of surprised on how mixed I've been with some of these early Rolling Stones albums. Some of my favorite Rolling Stones songs are on this album - "Mother's Little Helper," "Under My Thumb," and "Out Of Time" - but the rest is a bit lackluster. The last few songs are decent, but otherwise it's very forgettable British 60s pop/rock. Still giving this album 4 stars, but that's largely on the strength of the singles.

Mean, snarly, angry, cruel songs; blues pop psychedelia. The Stones question is always: 'is this ironic?" and Mick's sneer and the brilliance of some of the songs doesn't ever let us know. I like young hungry edgy Stones inspite of and because of this confusion.

paint it black classique rien à dire

I read the reviews and was surprised that the ratings are so low. To me, it's quite fun music, real rock and roll

The first 5 tracks are very good and then the 11 minutes song comes in, it ruins the flow a bit and it’s like 3-4 minutes too long. And the rest are around okay - great.

Enjoyed second half more than first

Sound good. Lyrics a little weird.

Just a good album, something to put on and listen to and chill. I listen to it while I was writing on my blog and it brought me great joy while writing

Des classiques comme Under My Thumb et Paint It Black!

Loved it. Wouldn’t change a thing.

I was really vibing with this. But the last song really dragged on and I was ready for it to be over.

A classic in my eyes. I’m firmly in the pro-Dylan camp when it comes to this list

O álbum em si puxa mais pro rockabilly, eu q não sou taao fã assim, até q gostei, principalmente da indistinguível voz do jagger HIGHLIGHTS: GOING HOME, PAINT IT BLACK, Think, Under my thumb, What to do 8.5/10
