Reviews (page 3 of 12)
Never listened to this album but I know a few songs from it. I’d be curious to know how the band feels about “stupid girl” now, but it is a catchy tune. “Lady Jane” was a good tune. I love hearing an album from a band who’s established like the Stones and enjoying it and understanding why they have their career. I am realizing I miss music like this. The sounds, the arrangements. I want to make records like this.
If I'm being honest, a bit more subdued than I would have liked Best Song: Paint it Black Rating: 7/10 Stars: 4
3/30 Pretty good
8/10
Some great songs that I love, others just ok
minus half for lady jane. minus half for mick never shutting up on going home.
I see a red doooor and i want it painted black... no colors anymore, i want them to turn black. Maravilhoso.
Verrrryyyy goood one of the Stones.
Both UK and US versions are solid.
I listened to the link which was the UK version and really enjoyed it. The US version has paint it black on it, but I liked the UK version better. 7/10 for us, 9/10 for UK. So I guess 8/10
UK VERSION - Fine. First line of the first song is....“What a drag it is getting old” It’s my birthday today. 3/5 US VERSION - Bumped up a star for Paint it Black. 4/5
Fun blues jams by the stones that helped the band really breakthrough and find their sound
It has a great atmosphere, with some very bluesy moments, and Jagger's vocals are indescribable
Often seen as the Stones response to The Beatles doing 'Rubber Soul' and writing a greater variety of songs. Granted the likes of 'Mother's little helper', 'Lady Jane', 'Under my thumb' and 'Out of time' are better album tracks., but the ridiculously long 'Going home' has a negative effect on the album as a whole and the other songs are more akin to the early blues rock idiom of the two previous years. 1966 was a key year for so many acts (Paint it black, have you seen your mother and 19th nervous breakdown were great hit singles) but this album is for me a tad overrated.
Really good surprisingly
Not a great fan of the stones but quite enjoyed this album
I chose US version because of the first song. 01) Paint It Black - 10,0 02) Stupid Girl - 7,5 03) Lady Jane - 8,5 04) Under My Thumb - 10,0 05) Doncha Bother Me - 8,0 06) Think - 7,5 07) Flight 505 - 7,5 08) High and Dry - 7,5 09) It's Not Easy - 8,0 10) I Am Waiting - 7,5 11) Goin' Home - 7,5 TOTAL: 8,14 (81/100) Current ranking: 215/855
The highs are high - "Under my Thumb", "Think", "Mother's Little Helper", etc. Some of the blues numbers and other affectations can wear a little thin and dated...its like a rougher, worse produced early Beatles album. Cements their bad boy image and shows some glimpses of what they would become. Lots of cool bass parts - "Mother's LIttle Helper" has a really cool "swish" sound by Bill Wyman that I never noticed before, and some of Keith's overdubs on fuzz bass too. I'll round up to a 4 caus its the Stones
"Paint it Black" and "Under my Thumb" are by far the best on here, and are basically the only thing preventing this from being a 3. "Lady Jane" and "Doncha Bother Me" are also good. "Stupid Girl" and "Going Home" are kinda grating though.
This album is about half okay stuff that hasn't aged well and half classic Stones. Very much a transitional album for them. I don't take the "misogyny" stuff too seriously given the time period and the fact that they were certainly heavily inspired by the attitudes of the American blues and soul records that they listened to and learned from. Also, not every songwriter is writing from the perspective of their own personal beliefs and experiences. Was Mick also literally the devil in Sympathy for the Devil?
Decent album with a few good songs. Starts off with a classic hit, and ends with a song that feels to long and has a little too much adlib MJ noises.
I was more of a Beatles fan back in the day and I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to one of their albums all the way to rough. Of course their hits were inescapable. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Misogyny and all. I added “Doncha Bother Me” to my playlist.
Um disco interessante que me fez consolidar porque o Stones são vistos no patamar dos Beatles. Indico muito, mas não sei o quanto ele estará no meu repeat, mas vale a apreciação
I had never heard this record somehow. The US version in much better with Paint it Black on it. Going 4 just cause it’s the Stones
60’s Rock ⭐️Paint It Black
Not much else to say other than just a really solid album.
While I don't mind older Stones albums this isn't my favorite era of their music. not awful, not my favorite
This was fuun. And sounds much better on a better system. The lyrics yeah… They’re a bit much
I really liked this album genuinely
Are we reviewing the US or UK version? Either way, this is the Rolling Stones first self-realized album where they stopped playing old blues songs and wrote their own songs (many of which sounded like old blues songs). The boys lyric writing unfortunately comes with a lot of braindead misogyny and even the songs that are devoid of it don't have a lot going for them lyrically speaking. Thankfully for me, I barely give a toss about lyrics and the music here is pretty darn great. The boys could write hooks and melodies, and the playing is solid everywhere. "Paint It Black" (if you're listening to the U.S. version) is the highlight, but there are good songs scattered throughout. I'm giving the edge to the U.S. version because of "Paint It Black" and it sticks the overlong "Going Home" where it's more easily skippable.
Some classics here- "Paint it Black" and "Lady Jane" compete for the "greatest Stones song" designation, while the deep tracks are actually still pretty interesting- the over the top misogyny on "Stupid Girl" that's so brusque that it is actually really funny, the super ahead-of-its-time sounding "Under My Thumb," the 11-minute blues improv of "Goin' Home" or the catchy Motown-inspired "Out of Time." My favorite of the Stones records I've heard on the list so far.
3.5
This is about the time when to me the stones really started getting their own identity. It's not quite as refined as they would make it once they got to the Jimmy Miller albums, but this definitely has the arrows pointing that way. The first side is pretty fierce starting with "Mother's Little Helper", "Stupid Girl", "Under My Thumb". "Doncha Bother Me" is probably the best Chicago Blues to come out of England. "Lady Jane" doesn't do the baroque pop as well as probably the Beatles, but I really do like this song quite a bit. And while "Going Home" isn't perfect it is their first foray into the longer jam blue rock that they would pretty much perfect with "Midnight Rambler", and later "Monkey Man". The. Second side is not as strong, but it still contain "Out Of Time". Also "High and Dry" is an imperfect sneak peak at their country Blues style they'd really hone by "Beggars Banquet" All on all, I don't think this album feels like a master stroke by them, but it is definitely the point where you see that they were going to become one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. (8.4) ★★★★
"Lady Jane" and "Out of Time" are classics. The rest of this is good. 4 stars
This is often considered the Stones' first great album, but I think great might be more like very good in this case. There are three great songs here - "Mother's Little Helper", "Under My Thumb", and "Out of Time" -- but the deeper cuts are kind of a mixed bag here and I wouldn't say any of them are really essential. Still, they're clearly growing as artists here, transitioning from what was essentially a blues/R&B cover band to the world class songwriters they'd eventually become. 4 stars.
4.5
There are some great songs on this album. Then there are some not so great songs on this album.
I have never encountered any other album that changes so much based on the first and last songs. Paint It Black was, in my eyes, a clever subversion that infuses the rest of the album with a dark undertone that was certainly novel at the time the album came out. The songs after that appeared childish and mundane on the surface but I thought them to be authentic insights into the minds of young chaps that lived in the 60s, with Paint It Black adding a troubled undercurrent in the shallow sea. Yet a lot of that goodwill disappeared with Going Home, the final track on the list. After about 4 minutes, it felt like the other band members took the singer hostage and just kept playing the same melody while their supposed friend repeats the same phrases over and over and over again. I expected a subversion, like that the narrator doesn't actually want to go home but it never came. I understand that experimentation was common during that time yet I think Going Home makes it apparent why 10 minute long songs have not become the norm. Best songs are Paint It Black and High And Dry. 8/10, a work of pioneers, for better and for worse.
Wouldn’t say it’s their best but it was fine
it's a nice fun album fav song: Stupid Girl
You could spread these out a little, 1001. The US and UK versions have a different big songs. This UK version (4 stars) is more classic sixties Stones opening with "Mother's Little Helper" while the US version (5 stars) offers the the electromagnetic "Paint It, Black." Despite having mostly the same other songs, "Paint" sets the album on more of forward thinking journey that continues through Exile, which in my mind is as great a run of albums that any band has every had. Regardless, "Under My Thumb" is one of the coolest songs they ever did.
Houmous & Chutney or Rolling Stones? That age old debate continues. 3.9 1/11 Paint It Black
It was really good but it there were some elements that didnt interest me much
Under my Thumb is a great example of what works here. The instrumental work is fun and interesting, it all melds together, and it's a tight song. The Rolling Stones pulled a lot of things together really well. It's almost hard to rate them.
Confusing which version to listen to. An expert use of non traditional instruments for the genre. The dulcimar, harmonica and marimba. Although Mother's Littler Helper is a good song, I am on the side of Paint it Black being an awesome way to kick off an album. A couple really strong songs on either version, other songs have their moments but do not keep the listener's attention.
Quality album
How are they still going
The album that has Paint it Black, but only in the US version. Also has Under My Thumb and Lady Jane. Other songs in it were quite fine. While I prefer 69-75 Stones, this is still quite good.
Honestly a little bit more country and bluesy than I expected. I'd honestly give it a 3.5 if possible - neither 3 or 4 really capture my feelings towards this. I'm okay with 4 since the instrumentals used were quite varied and there wasn't anything in particular that annoyed me.
Not the Stones' greatest album (by far), but an interesting snapshot of the boys starting to come into their own. I listened to the UK and American versions of the album. The US version has the definite benefit of having Paint It Black on it, which is probably the best song on either version. But I also like Mother's Little Helper, and am surprised that didn't make the cut for the US. I also like the choice to put Going Home as the album closer as the US version. It feels like it fits better in that slot. The song itself reminds me of a proto-Midnight Rambler. It's Not Easy sounds like the band that they soon will become, just not quite fully fleshed out.
Day756 - we got two of their best in paint it black and under my thumb. it’s crazy that it’s been sixty years old and they’re still at it
Aftermath on The Rolling Stonesin kolmas albumi ja ensimmäinen jolla kaikki kappaleet olivat yhtyeen itsensä tekemiä. Vaikka Aftermath ei olekaan tyylillisesti jyrkkä täyskäännös bändin aiempiin julkaisuihin, mukana on kuitenkin paljon kokeiluja erilaisilla instrumenteilla. Myöskin sanoituksissa on huomattavissa entistä enemmän synkkyyttä, esimerkiksi sitarilla säestetyssä kappaleessa Mother's Little Helper, jossa tylsistynyt kotirouva hakee helpotusta reseptilääkkeistä. Muihin huippuhetkiin kuuluvat mm. barokkihenkinen rakkauslaulu Lady Jane ja ilkikurinen parisuhdekuvaus Under My Thumb.
The definition of a classic rock alblum. Found myself smiling while listening to the popular songs. Enjoyed listening to the non released songs. A solid 4.
It's not the best Rolling Stones album but just about any Rolling Stones album is still great. It starts off with the strongest track, Paint It Black. Which does mean the rest of the album is downhill from there. Good thing that the downhill isn't steep, and it's packed with good songs.
I've always preferred the Stones to many of their contemporaries. They were always just a bit more raw.
Mother's little helper - 5 Stupid girl - 4 Lady Jane - 2 Under my thumb - 5 Doncha bother me - 4 Going home - 3 Flight 505 - 4 High and dry - 4 Out of time - 4 It's not easy - 4 I am waiting - 4 Take it or leave it - 3 Think - 3 What to do - 4
The Stones are just fantastic. I’m a little sad that Paint It Black isn’t on the UK version though.
great
Classic Coldplay.
Some bangers!
Bluesy! Very fun!
Good, bluesy album!
It has this one mega hit and one very good song but overall it's not that wonderful. Solid I'd say. There are better Stones albums though.
BEST SONGS: - Paint It, Black - Lady Jane - High And Dry
I listened to both versions. Nice
Classic Rolling Stones - good from first to last.
Great vibe. Really enjoyed this album.
Lovely little arrangement of old stones tunes. Right before they slid into their '67-72 Mickey Mantle era. Old stones really are plumb full of dashing melodies, interesting blues adjacent instrumentation and divine song writing with masterful allegory. I wont suck their dicks too hard. Old stones keeps me going from time to time. Four stars on merit. The following catalogue really brought em to fame.
Great album! I don't think I've ever listened to the full album before, but all the songs sound very familiar as I've hear them in the periphery... via movies, commercials, remixes etc. Definitely part of the zeitgeist soundtrack living on this side of the world!
8/10
Strong stones album. Aftermath of what, I wonder? Further research shows it was a name picked to avoid controversy. Anyway, it encapsulates what I would expect to hear from a Stones album. Comparing it to earlier releases I think there are some examples of more mature and original songwriting. Some social poignancy, plenty of blues tracks, and a fantastic mid-60s song (Under My Thumb) leaves me to once again give the Stones a 4. Probably would've been a 5 if they omitted the last few tracks. They could've finished this album with "Out Of Time" But that's just like, you know, my opinion man.
5/5
Quite enjoyable. Best Stones album I’ve heard so far. Or maybe it just clicked today!
Overall very good but some songs were just too weak to give it 5 stars. The Stones can definitely do better on some of the other songs. Standouts "Going home" and "Under my thumb". I think the structure of the American version is much better and has the obvious huge standout of "paint it black" which is one of there best works.
Some tracks I loved, like paint it black is great obviously as well as I am waiting, the rest is ehh. Not the best stones stuff in my opinion
J'ai eu peur d'encore un album rock standard et en fait c'était très sympa
3.5
This was a good album!
Musicas gostosinhas, álbum bom
Some classics in this!
Pretty good. Grew on me as I listened. Favorite song was “Out of Time”. 1966…BOB.
This should be good.
4.5/5
8/10
Under my Thumb is an excellent track. A solid album despite a meandering 11 minute track in the middle. Not sure about that, but liked the rest
I'm going to rate this as a combo of the US version and the UK version of this album. If I would just do one of these I might drop it to a 3 star since Paint it Glass wasn't on the UK version and Mothers Little Helper wasn't on the US version and those where my 2 favorites.
a bit too many rolling beatles and not enough stones for my liking
paint it black. they did cooler stuff than just the big hits.
going from stupid girl to lady jane is crazy # justice for lady anne and marie 🥇going home 🥈out of time 🥉under my thumb
Crazy high highs that set the stage for the Stones incredible run of albums that soon follows. Under my thumb…
I have listened to this album a lot over time. I really love it. I actually prefer the UK version cause I really like Out of Time. The 11-minute Going Home is done very well. I like when Mick Jagger settles on a new phrase to keep repeating - ha! Edit Apr 2 2026: 5 --> 4. I still really like just like I did. Idk if it qualifies to be with the other 5/5s though
Great.
This may not be my favorite Rolling Stones album, but it's got some really great tunes from their early era.
Mycket härlig musik! Lyssnade medan jag stickade, iklädd manchesterbyxor och Henning satt på golvet och lekte i vårt 60-talshus. Kände att jag var i en annan tidsepok.
It's the fucking Rolling Stones, of course it's great. "Out of Time" and "I Am Waiting" are some of Mick and Keith's best songs.
(US Version) Paint it Black is a great start to the album. Lady Jane is pretty good too. The album then falls off to generic blues rock that all sounds the same. Then Going Home ends it on a slightly better note. It's a 3.5, but I'll round up for Paint it Black.
More like "Boring Stones", amiright? That's what I expected going in and for the first few songs, that's what I got. As I was listening, I slowly realized that this is a deception: The album comes off as cookie cutter rock'n'roll songs (with the added spice of Jagger's jagged voice), but beneath the repetitive hooks there is a creative and experimental spirit that surfaces here and there: Use of sitar here, soft ballad there, going home's minimalist stretch. Also taking into account this is one of the earliest works in the project (page 93 in the original book), there's actually a lot to admire here. I can literally imagine myself as a teenager in the sixties with my eyes closed, lying on a bean bag tripping out to Going Home (a beautifully mixed song that maximizes the tension between sound and silence). I'm not sure I would come back to this album in the future, as it's way out of my musical generation, but put in the right context, this is more than just another rock album: Beneath the repetition there are glimpses of genuine art.
Shockingly enough I’m not huge on the Stones but this is one of their albums I enjoy more than others :)
Solid Stones record, even though I’m more of a Beatles guy LOL
Mõnus kraam ja isegi kui poisid vahepeal mööda laulavad, on asi täitsa nauditav, sest see kõlab ehtsalt. 4/5
I love the early Stones! (10/10)
Good bluesy early Stones. Full of energy and feeling.
Theee things the generator has taught me: 1. most HipHop albums are way too long 2. one Neil Young album would have sufficed 3. Stones are not an album band - even though they have (at least) 4 of the greatest songs of the 20th century, there’s a LOT of mediocrity in between But this album I really enjoyed 😘
love how the uk and us versions differ so dramatically, was cool to hear the UK
This is the UK version which is somewhat different from the US version. "Paint It Black" is not on the UK Version. At 11+ minutes, "Goin' Home" is surprisingly on both versions. I could do without that. "Under My Thumb", I knew quite well. "Lady Jane" was ok... but I did like "Out Of Time" quite a bit and was surprised that it had been left off the US version. It's historic for the Stones as it's their first all Jagger/Richards album. But there are only a handful of songs that stood out for me, it's missing "Paint It Black" and I get the UK Singles vs chopped up US Albums debate. I just think that the UK album is not as strong because of what I know is on the US version. I also have the knowledge of their albums to come so this is weaker because of those "filler" songs.
I had no expectations for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of good but some worse songs as well. I'm feeling low 4
Pretty good album. I've never really listened to early Rolling Stones, but I like the feel of most of this album. Of course there were a couple of bangers, but outside of them, it was a good 60's album.
A couple of my favourite Stones songs ( Under my Thumb, Paint it Black) alongside a few tracks that I couldn't say I care for nearly as much. The Rolling Stones are the masters of their raw, loose, blues inspired rock and roll and on Aftermath you can really hear them come in to that sound. I did feel like a couple tracks came off as messy sounding with a looseness that actually distracted from the song, the rhythm was top notch but not a ton of melody. I also felt like the songwriting on one or two tracks felt a little bit too much like they were trying to imitate the blues scene they drew inspiration from a little too much. This is still a very solid record judged by any standard but in my opinion isn't quite up to the level of where the Rolling Stones would eventually go.
Never was a Rolling Stones fan (was indifferent) but I definitely feel the influence of this one!
An annoying quirk of this era of musical releases is that the British and American versions of the albums tend to differ in track listing. As such, I will listen to all available tracks from both versions. Now, let's get to the actual album. It's a pretty good 60s rock album with strong songwriting that really serves to show how far the Stones came in the two years since their cover-filled debut(which I rated a 2 earlier in the project). Granted, there is absolutely no reason for a Stones song to be 11 minutes long("Going Home"). "Paint It Black" is, of course, better than any of the UK tracks, but those are no slouches.
This is a solid album from beginning to end. The Rolling Stone’s worst song is other’s best. A rock band that has questionable lyrics about women? *gasp* If those writers were alive today they would have a conniption fit. Music is a slippery slope.
classic -- but only 3 tracks were truly 4 stars, certainly the first one.
Excellent early stones. Under my thumb is a top jam.
Paint it Black is my favourite Stones song! Cool to get this album! Paint it black still amazing. Stupid girl bops along, though the lyrics, woof Honestly the whole album is terrific melodies and beats with problematic lyrics. The Stones are clearly one of the GOAT bands, they have range, talent and a sound that is honestly still.pretty unique. But they're also a product of their time. Then being a bunch of "old weirdos" as I noted in a previous review doesn't change the fact they're extremely talented musicians. I think this is the fourth stones album I have had so far? And so far my favourite, this and Beggars Banquet.
Great album
Starts off pretty cool with Mother's Little Helper, a track I didn't know. Love the sound of this song. Second song is pretty good as well. Lady Jane is kind of different, but not sure how I feel about it. Jagger's singing is a little weird on that track, though the music is pretty good. Under My Thumb is obviously a classic. Going Home is pretty groovy. High and Dry has a foot-stomping groove. Hearkens a little to Zeppelin's later "Bron y aur Stomp" track. Overall this album is better for me than Let it Bleed. Think is a great track as well. What to Do is a little too country western for me. 4/5 overall.
Classic
Great vibe
This album does hate woman but also kinda rules
Classic
Really really fun. I always forget how much I like the stones.
Kunnon siksarirokkia! Onhan tää sikatiukka platta täynnä hittejä! 4/5
rollarilevyjen paremmasta päästä. vielä tästä uk-versiosta uupumaan jäi klassikko paint it black.
There is a UK version and a US version of this album that have a lot of different songs between the two, but I didn’t want to listen to an hour and forty minutes of the Stones so I chose to listen to the US version that opens with ‘Paint It Black’. They used a lot of cool, off the wall instruments on this album that made almost every song sound interesting and different from the next. I enjoyed all the tracks except for ‘Lady Jane’, as that one sounded like music from a ren fair. I think this was the first time I listened to an entire Stones album, and it was better than I expected! I’ll bump it up to a low 4/5.
sick vibes, vinyl?
Både Between the Buttons og On Their Satanic Majesties Request lider litt av det samme. Det er egentlig ikke før Beggar's Banquet at jeg føler Stones får en skikkelig solid plate fra et band som endelig har vokst opp og funnet seg selv.
I don’t think I’ve listened to the UK version of this before, which is missing Paint It Black but has several songs not on the US version. Both are very good but I prefer Paint It Black as the opener.
This album starts out strong with 2 of my favorites in the first 3 tracks. Paint it Black is excellent followed by Stupid Girl and the much underrated Lady Janr with it's moody mellow ron synth. Under My Thumb a Stones live classic rounds out the start of the album but it gets pretty bluesy boring after that.
The search for the 5* Rolling Stones album continues, but we're getting warmer... How many of them are on this fucking thing anyway?
The Rolling Stones' most solid album. Doesn't seem to be filler as outside of even the big hits I love (yeah I'm listening to the U.S. version) the deep cuts actually hold their own too and are memorable. Wish more of their albums had this kind of consistancy without being total bores
Obviously, some of these are classics and this represents the high water mark of this band, but i still maintain that The Stones are over rated and nothing more than a pop band that were good for their time.
I love this early Stones album. It always surprises me when I revisit it. I get so used to the sound from their 70’s run of classics since that’s the era I listen to the most, but this one has some of their best work on it. Obviously “Paint It Black” and “Under My Thumb” are the hits here but to me there really isn’t a skip on this album. 4.5
Kind of chill, nothing stood out but I liked it
Gostei, eh legal, bem rock tradicional, mas topzin bonzin chitaozin 8/10
It's always difficult to rate a legendary album on its own merits. The Rolling Stones Aftermath contains several absolute classics (e.g, "Paint it Black" and "Under My Thumb"). It's obvious that The Rolling Stones were branching out both in their songwriting and their use of the studio for creative expression, though they are nowhere close to where they would be six years later when they released Exile on Main Street, which is a true masterpiece album rather than a collection of loosely related tunes. I listened to this record twice in a row. It sounds great, and the songs are all solid, but Aftermath doesn't quite reach the level top tier. Four stars.
Love paint it black!!
A legendary band that was still finding its footing. They jam out some songs a little too long, but the talent is obviously there. Cool to see the early days.
Qiuite good
Excellent hard to decide between 4 and 5 out if 10
The 4th Stones album I've gotten so far. Getting to be a bit much. This one isn't as good as the others, but it has really great standalone tracks. I recommend you listen to the UK version because it has Mother's Little Helper on it.
I almost gave this a five just based on under my thumb. Then I realized I gave Stevie Wonder’s innervision a four, and that just didn’t seem right. But a word on under my thumb: I think that is one of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs of all time. Top five. I see how these days it would read as sexist, and certainly that scans. However, I see it as a celebration of sexual power that could work either way. I have always loved it and I still do.
I can definitely understand the comparisons to The Beatles, but I think they have an edge to them that The Beatles don't. This is firmly rock and roll in a way that The Beatles aren't. Favorites: Mother's Little Helper, Going Home, Flight 505
Sigh, more Stones... 60s rock and roll/blues rock with more edgy lyrics than contempories (Stupid Girl) Harpsichord on Lady Jane is an interesting choice for the time. And marimba on Under My Thumb. But lyrics are scary! Hopefully tongue-in-cheek! Quite mature for a young band. Flight 505! Out of Time is a fun cover. Wait, it's not a cover! Best track - Under My Thumb, Going Home, Think, Out Of Time 4 stars, borderline. I can appreciate a d actually enjoy a fair amount of this
Good and pleasant but could be more proto-.
Superb album, but the lyricism can be downright terrible at times.
The thing I really noticed this time, is the weird Brian Jones instrumental bits. Even so, it's not my favourite Stones album. Not so much an aftermath as a beginning.
I prefer a bit earlier or later Stones, but this is still awesome.
Hasn’t aged well in places, but come on… it’s the Stones
Amazing album. Loved it. Felt very punk and punching up. Fav song: mothers little girl, Lady Jane, Out of time and stupid girl (mostly because its funny)
I listened to the US version of this album which includes "Paint It, Black" and I gotta say, this probably would have been a 3 star rating but that song alone bumps it up to a 4.
I really enjoyed this album, it might be my favorite RS album, if not then it’s let it bleed. But regardless it starts with one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and while it doesn’t maintain that level of perfection through out, there are several gems on this album. As always, they are incapable of writing an album without there being a fairly massive hit or several respectable hits. This album is no different and it’s one of their absolute best.
Classic. Great singles. Good vibes
🗯 The Stones’ first all-original album — their raw edge rubbing up against hunger and new ambition, the moment they became an albums band. My entry point into the Stones was Hot Rocks on my parents’ stereo, and maybe that’s why I’ve always adored early Stones. There’s an innocence and hunger in those years as they fought to find their place and learn the craft of songwriting. Aftermath is where that effort crystallised — their first LP of all Jagger/Richards compositions, buoyed by the confidence of hits like ‘Satisfaction’, ‘Get Off of My Cloud’ and ‘19th Nervous Breakdown’. Brian Jones reentered as a vital collaborator here, colouring the songs with sitar, dulcimer, marimbas — textures that pushed the band forward. It’s also stacked with classics: ‘Under My Thumb’ and ‘Out of Time’ (two of my all-time Stones favourites), ‘Mother’s Little Helper’, ‘Stupid Girl’, ‘Lady Jane’, and the US version famously kicks off with ‘Paint It Black’ (replacing ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ from the UK). Released in the thick of the “album era,” Aftermath was the Stones’ answer to Rubber Soul — a record proving they weren’t just a singles band. For me, it’s their finest to date at that point, and crucial in their growth from bluesy raunch merchants to ambitious album artists. Verdict: Essential (the moment the Stones levelled up) For fans of: Rubber Soul respondents, The Kinks, sneering swagger with a side of sitar
Great one!
Dope
Uh oh. Under my Thumb means more than I thought. I like them but much less than the Beatles.
While not really being my favorite genre this was really good.
Pretty mediocre Stones album but it did have some great songs on it.
awawawaw
I've always suspected that the Stones singles out put in the 60s far out performed album tracks. And that this flipped in the late 60s/70s. There are 2 problems with this album. Firstly, the misogynistic lyrics. And secondly, there are a few dud tracks, going home in particular. The good aspects of album - Brian Jones muscianship, the big hits like 'time is on my side' and the fact that the stones wrote all their own songs.
Such a classic. Sounds like a very well performed live recording. Great energy and interesting arrangements. It’s great.
Pretty solid set by the Stones here. Those lyrics though -- hoo, boy...
It’s hard to rate The Rolling Stones. It’s like comparing ice cream, even if you don’t love it, it’s still really good. I’d be cool with never hearing Lady Jane again but the rest of the album is excellent, a couple of songs are even iconic.
I don't think I've ever heard early Rollins Stones like this. Kinda digged this more than their bigger stuff. 7/10
They have better albums but it’s still pretty good
A few greats here back up with standard Stones quality

You know, apart from all of the blatant misogyny that is in this album, it is pretty good. Great hits in Paint It, Black and Under My Thumb, and good album tracks, especially for the 60s. I'd definitely be a fan of them any day over the Beatles.
This starts off amazing and seems to be pushing an edgy version of 60's rock, then takes a dive into a blues album, then finishes with an eleven minute song that is actually interesting. The only thing that lets it down really is the pacing is off and feels like all the smash hits are front loaded into the album still enjoyed it.
Not their most refined, as is evident in the repetitive nature of the songs. However, considering the time this music is formative and still holds up with some notable strength. I think it’s recorded pretty well considering and the material is obviously a bit juvenile. Still it’s jangly and boppy. Classic stones.
An early Stones classic where they start developing more as songwriters and utilizing a wider variety of sounds, instruments, and influences (particularly on Side A). Still plenty of blues too, like the 11 minute jam Goin’ Home. Overall, a solid 60s rock album that has a few Stones classics, as they branch out musically and expand their artistry. Unfortunately, my 2 favorite songs (Mothers Little Helper, Paint It Black) are not on a shared release, with one on the UK release and the other US.
i'm a decently big stones fan and love their output after a certain point, but aftermath is sort of that vague certain point. i find a lot of the first couple of years of their output to be pretty hit or miss and very rough around the edges in not a charming or nice way. a lot of it sounds like they haven't quite found their footing yet. aftermath is no exception (for the record, i listened to the UK version as from a tiny bit of research, this was the version referenced in the 1001 albums books. so no paint it black, which would honestly help this album a lot). there are some great early stones tracks on here, such as 'mothers little helper' and 'under my thumb' but the rest of the album is really just a lot of decent to middling blues tracks that aren't bad, but aren't really interesting or mindblowing. ultimately, i like this album, but it's clear listening to the album that the band had a lot more growing to do in the coming years.
1966 is eeearly. Paint it black one of the best songs of all time. Rest of the album is pretty good.
They really are great songs on this one, a couple I just didn’t like. Glad to add this to my collection.
I listened to the US version. Paint it Black is a great song. The rest of the album had some highs and lows. Overall enjoyable.
Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Läuft ganz fabelhaft durch.
Some of these songs are downright nasty, but as an intentionally more edgy alternative to the Beatles, they've absolutely nailed it. The temptation may be to listen to the US edition of the album due to it's shorter length and the inclusion of one of the bands greatest ever singles, Paint It Black, but you'd be missing out on some of the UK originals best tunes, like Mothers Little Helper and Out Of Time. Under My Thumb is one of my all time favourite Stones songs, even if it is incredibly misogynistic. Honestly, in terms of the mid 60's era of the Beatles and the Stones, this might be my favourite album between them, although I think the rest of the decade belongs to the Liverpudlians (The Stones best albums released in the 70's). 4 Stars.
3.75 / 5 A pretty good album overall. I love me some bluesy guitar licks
UK version.
This was one of the first cds I got as a kid, so I listened to it repeatedly and the whole thing is burned into the back of my brain. Not really the stones best work but still enjoyable and I have some personal nostalgia for it.
In many ways, the album that started the rise that ultimately would see the Stones as one of the most important rock acts in history (note: UK and US versions differ, this review is based on a listen of both). Their previous single “No Satisfaction” got the world’s attention, but this album defined their direction. The first album to be entirely written by the Stones moves a little further from blues (albeit still pretty damn bluesy on B side), toward a little more pop and, at times, a lot more rock and roll. This was especially true for several classic singles like "Paint it Black (US version)"--where Jones plays the scimitar after recently leaning the instrument from Harrison, "Mother's Little Helper" and "Under My Thumb" where we hear the Stones developing the style that will ultimately define the band's music. I was also interested to read that at least with respect to the US version, this was their first album to be released in entirely in stereo; sometimes, I forget that this was a thing. This is all to say that this album is an important one for the band and for its place in rock/music history. It has several great songs that would become part of the band's lexicon throughout their career. Unfortunately, especially toward the back end, there were also songs that seemed like filler and largely forgettable. Perhaps understandable given that it, in retrospect, is considered transitional. “Going Home”, while a decent song, is entirely too long. Others that didn’t really stand out as particularly great to me include: “Flight 505” (okay southern blues, just repetitive & relatively uninteresting), “Take it or Leave it” and “Think”. These weaker songs are not horrible, but they are weak enough that I would describe the album as inconsistent. I've always enjoyed the Stones, but have never been a major fan, mostly meaning that I’ve never systematically worked my way through their discography. As a result, I'm pretty sure that this was the first time I've listened to the album from start to finish (several times). Overall, I enjoyed the album, although maybe not as much as their later records. Still, once again, I find myself grateful that the project prompted my listen.
Ok
Not their best but still solid
There’s way more hate in the reviews than I expected. Yeah, some of the lyrics are edgy by today’s standards, but acting like "Under My Thumb" or "Stupid Girl" is a manifesto instead of tongue-in-cheek storytelling misses the point entirely. It’s rock and roll, not a TED Talk. "Paint It, Black" is an all-time top 10 song for me. That opening sitar riff is instantly recognizable and still sounds great. I’d probably slot "Under My Thumb" into my top 50 too. The groove is tight, the delivery is cool, and the song just works. Not every track is a banger, but there's enough classic Stones energy here to make it worthy of 4 stars.
I liked this album a lot. More than just bluesy rock from the Stones. Really like the range of instruments used. 4/5
Good solid rock album, but dated
Альбом великолепный, особенно в начале хит за хитом. Если бы не проходные песни в середине, поставил бы 9 баллов, а так 7,5 из 10.
No los había escuchado antes y me ha gustado bastante.
😍
At this point in the mid-1960s, both the Stones and the Beatles were releasing slightly differing track listings for their albums. That’s the case with Aftermath, so I listened to both. It’s an incredible album (US version has Paint It Black, UK doesn’t, UK version has Mother’s Little Helper, US doesn’t), and is said to be an audible relic of Swinging London. I think it’s the first truly great Stones album.
I have to admit it now : it was my first Rolling Stones album. Yep... I know... As much as I love The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd... I never loved that much The Stones to listen to one of their release entirely. I just stopped to their hits/singles. Pretty embarassing when you tell everyone you 'only like Classic Rock'! I don't know why, I never really was interested by them, by their music. But the 1001 Album Generator proposed to me Aftermath (UK), I had to give it a try then! What could happen anyways? So I was a bit septical at first. I truly had no idea what I was going after/was expecting... But it turned out I liked Aftermath! I actually listened to it two times already (well, almost). So then I thought 'why did I never get the time to listen to them?' and there is why: as much as I love the production of theirs songs, I'm not much fan of Mick Jagger's voice. I will almost say his voice is rather unpleasant at first. At first. Then, I overpassed it and I think I understand what this album has! But, why would you sing a song named 'Stupid Girl'? I know it was a long time ago, but still... It's weird. And I find 'Goin' Home' way too long, and I don't find the song very interesting either (it just repeats himself again and again and again...). I read somewhere it was the longest song at the time, interesting. In the end, I think Aftermath (UK Version) is worth to listen to. There are some great tunes: Lady Jane is very nice, and I always loved Under My Thumb!
i liked it it sounds like too 60s for the good
I like early Stones work. Not my favorite album of this era for them but still quite good.
I always find it difficult to know how to rate albums like this. To my modern ears in 2025, this is a pretty good album with some interesting music put together. However, it’s important to remember just how little rock and roll there was at this time, and that the Rolling Stones helped to birth this. To me, this sounds like a new spin on the blues, and arguably it’s exactly what it is, but without this spin there would be very little rock music around today. The Stones definitely deserve a lot of credit for that.
No notes. Good Rolling Stones sound here.
this was a much more enjoyable mix of beach boys style but fun rock (ish) dang he really likes that girl tho
The Rolling Stones are great and this album is that too. Goin' home is a true gem.
I didn’t know this album but I did know about half the songs - probably from a later “best of” collection. Interesting mix of 60s pop and bluesy styles across the tracks. Enjoyed the listen
first stones album! these guys rrrrrrrock best track: high and dry worst track: going home
Three amazing and iconic songs. The rest is really good although I don't think I'm going to be hitting this one again in the near future (short of "greatest hits" listening).
A solid Stones album
This was cool. It’s fun to hear early 60s Rolling Stones. The blues influence is so heavy. I love how all of these songs are original, because you can really hear where they land the plan and where it kind of isn’t totally working. It’s probably 3-5 songs too long. But when it works, it’s really great.
Very typical rock songs, I mean, the albums starts with THE rolling stones song but the rest... I mean it's good, I enjoyed it, I'm into rock but it was nothing crazy, really solid tracks tho, very deserving of a high rating
Wouldn't it just be easier to make a list of Rolling Stones album that you don't need to hear before you die?
Great album. Great early stuff.
Couple goodies
I quite enjoyed it
Mother's Little Helper Stupid Girl Paint It, Black Lady Jane Under My Thumb Goin' Home Out of Time I Am Waiting
Think about with the beatles bit more folk & has a rolling stone originality to it and i love with the beatles so this album forsure my jazz. First rolling stone i listen to front to back i really like the song stupid girl good ole rock n roll. Problem i have with it is alot of the tracks aint have that “WOW” factor but all the tracks here are really good under my thumb lyrics are so good and the lil melody in the back so good. I also didnt like the end track no need to make the song 11 mins 😭😭 the other 6 mins was just them foolin around and not in a fun way. Good album tho definitely gonna be spinning this album it does stratch a itch for my specifically i say this album a 3.7 so i’ll say 4
When Rolling Stones were still fighting The Beatles... good stuff
Paint it Black! One of my favourite Stones' tracks. Another couple of very good songs, with the rest just typical cruisey late 60's treasure.
This is the album that hooked me on the Stones when going through their discography. While I don't think it's as good as Rubber Soule, which was contemporaneous with Aftermath, I think it's largely solid. The misogyny doesn't bother me as much as it probably should and there are some all time classics on here
I'd never listened to this album in its entirety, but have heard most of the songs before. I very much enjoyed it except Goin' Home which goes on a blues odyssey - Spinal Tap would be proud. Other than that, I enjoyed the album and I guess it's a classic Rolling stones release. Songs I've known since my childhood.
This was pretty good. It’s very much classic Rolling Stones.
What gets tragically lost with the reviews on this album is that this is the first batch of original music from the Stones. Mick and Keith sat at the feet of the Beatles and watched them work. They then took notes and one-upped the lads. Yeah, the Stones over the Beatles any day of the week and this is the album that started it. 4/5
This album came out the year I was born, but a few of the songs still stand the test of time. Mother’s Little Helper and Under My Thumb are both great songs, probably the best on the album. The rest are okay, but just couldn’t hold my attention like the others. The a Stones have a huge catalog of hits, a few here, but this wasn’t their best work.
Love the stones! There are some great classic songs on this album.
It feels like a cup of earl gray Not bad
they really are that good
Quite a bit of filler, the highs are very good though. Obviously went with the UK version so no Paint It Black, might have had to be a 5 if that was here for that alone.
Unpolished early album
There's a lot of variety across the tracks and it was an interesting listen. There are a lot of good songs but apart from Paint It Black, the only standout to me was Under My Thumb.
7.7/10 klasik nmm sta da dodam slusacu ponovo
Relistened to the UK version. What a great album. Feel that Going Home might be filler but also understand that’s them getting back to blues. Reminded how amazing Brian Jones is on this. Also, not sure if it’s because of the hi-res version I listened to but Bill Wyman’s bass really comes through more than I remember. One of the great albums I don’t have on vinyl.
Feels like original authentic bluesy rock n roll.
Some classics
Stupid Girl is an extremely weak point in the album, but it’s otherwise solid.
Actually, the first album of the stones that I have listened to from head to toe
The mean boys of the groovy 60s. The Misfits, to The Beatles’ Jem. Lady Jane is hilarious. They were so earnest. You can hear them finding their style throughout the different tracks. So much great music. Keith Richard’s doesn’t get enough credit as a songwriter and musician. Everyone just jokes on him, but he is always pitch-perfect. Really brilliant from such a young age.
Listened to the US and UK versions. Loved 'out of time', 'lady jane', and 'paint it black'. The other songs were okay or not memorable for me.
Liked the Lindsey Buckingham Green cover
This was a pretty cool album that leaned more into the blues rock side of things. There were one or two tracks with a slight psychedelic edge, but overall, it feels like the band was still slowly moving toward that direction before fully diving into the psychedelic era.
Listened to this after setting up my hearing aids while at work. It was like I was secretly listening to music. Also probably not the best speaker system... Very 70s. Semi psychedelic.
Jagger/Richards maturing as songwriters continued with Aftermath and I think this album is the first with all their own songs and no covers. Highlights are Lady Jane, Under My Thumb.
I guess they really were England's newest hit-makers.
Made a Playlist with both versions UK & US
bangers but many sleepers
first listen pretty good
There are a couple of generic blues/bar rock tunes on here, which make it all the more interesting that this album also produced Under my Thumb and Paint it Black (included in the version I listened to as opposed to original UK release). The Stones really gather steam here, moving ahead into the 64-71 era that resulted in Hot Rocks, which is my all time fav...basic take there, I guess. Good stuff.
Excellent rock album
3.7
A bunch of good stuff; I appreciated the longer "Going Home" as the more bluesy variant of the Stones that I've heard of but not heard much of.
Mainly good hits with a few weak ones.
I like later Stones enough that, except for my favorite song Paint it Black, I almost forget about Beatles-era Stones when they were consistently compared to each other. I love The Beatles, but the Stones were really good. I have no idea who I would have picked in 1966.
Like everything British, the UK version leaves off the Billion play song "Paint It Black" and this is the one that the website defaulted to on Spotify ... lucky for the rating I went and found the American Release ... and that song alone, plus dropping a few of the "meh" songs upgrades this album significantly
Good stuff. The Stones innit
The Rolling Stones are one of those bands that I seem to enjoy any time that I listen to them but, for some reason, I don't listen to them all that much. This album was quintessential mid-60s British rock and is overall enjoyable.
The UK version of Aftermath leads off with 'Mother's Little Helper' and the US gets 'Paint It Black' instead. Idk why they wouldn't wanna include both, but 'Paint It Black' is a truly transcendent song and one of the best things they ever wrote, so I’m happy to have the US version here. I like 'Under My Thumb' too - I see it as a parody of masculinity coming from self-aware songwriters, like the Beatles with 'Run For Your Life', and so I’m not terribly bothered by it. Also enjoyed 'I Am Waiting' which I don't remember ever hearing before. I don't give the Rolling Stones a lot of love. It took them until 1966 to write a full album of their own songs. And even after listening to and enjoying Aftermath, I'm still going to probably put on a compilation like Hot Rocks if I want to hear these songs. But this was an impressive leap forward for them, and one of those moments where they came close to being as good as the Beatles.
Half of this I loved, half of it I forgot about. But I gotta say, this is my favorite Rolling Stones album so far - by a decent margin.
Todavía por detras de the Beatles, pero con dos grandes canciones.
Normally not a big Stones fan, but I found this pretty solid and enjoyable.
Not their best album that we've had but still solid and I think I'm gonna give it a 4 just because of all the crap we've had recently. They play their instruments super well and while yes a lot of the lyrics are pretty demeaning towards women, it's nothing compared to the gangsta rap we've had recently. "Paint it Black" is one of their best ever.
I never considered myself a fan of the Stones, but this was great.
What’d you expect from a stones album. Good blues, good to listen to so that i’ve got it under my belt. Good to move on afterwards as this sound isnt ground breaking for me with a history of blues music. Favourite track: Going Home
I never cared for the Rolling Stones, but that is because I had only heard them out of context as singles. There were some bangers and the rest were fine. Understanding them as a jam band makes way more sense.
3/11/25. Okay, this one is up there for me when it comes to Rolling Stones albums! Simple yet effective rock songs. There's something with Brian Jones that really elevates the band, even in the early days.
Aftermath is where The Rolling Stones truly started to carve out their own identity, moving beyond their blues-cover roots and proving they could craft an entire album of original material that stands on its own. The songwriting is sharper, the instrumentation more adventurous, and there’s a sense of confidence throughout that makes it feel like a turning point for the band. Tracks like Paint It, Black and Under My Thumb are undeniable classics, full of dark energy and iconic riffs, while deeper cuts like Lady Jane and I Am Waiting show a more delicate, baroque-inspired side that adds some unexpected texture. Brian Jones, in particular, is the album’s secret weapon, adding marimba, dulcimer, and sitar to the mix, giving the record a distinctive edge that sets it apart from the standard blues-rock fare of the time. That said, Aftermath isn’t without its flaws. At 53 minutes, it’s a bit long for an album of this era, and not every track justifies its runtime—some of the bluesier numbers drag a little compared to the more inventive moments. Lyrically, it’s got that sneering, rebellious Stones attitude, but songs like Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb lean into a kind of arrogance that hasn’t aged particularly well. Still, the sheer variety and ambition make Aftermath one of the most important albums of their early years. It’s not perfect, but it’s a crucial step forward—one that set the stage for the band’s best work to come.
This is one of those albums that I really enjoyed listening to as a whole, but didn't fall in love with individual songs that much. The lyrics got annoying at times as well, but I'm still rounding it up to four stars, 'cause it's a solid rock album. 3.5 stars
I love sitars and the idea of bringing sitars to rock music. Paint it black is amazing but the rest doesn’t really stand out for me. 3 stars for the album, and 1 extra star if paint it black is included.
I can see why this was the “commercial breakthrough” for the stones. I liked it more than I expected to (despite paint it black on the US version which is just a song I’ve never really seen the appeal for. I guess the UK version got it right with leaving this song off). For the most part, the songs are pretty crisp with some memorable hooks and riffs here and there.
I feel like I need to give this one another listen to better rate it and just because I enjoyed it. The US version is right in the sweet spot for album run time and it’s interesting to see the influence of different genres on the Stones. Paint it Black is a classic and there wasn’t anything I disliked about the other songs. Maybe I’ll change my mind later on, but for now I’m going with a four.
I like The Stones. I like "Paint It Black". I like "Under My Thumb". Not much else I have to say about this album.
I mostly listen to the 68-72 run of Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. from the Stones. I'm not as familiar with either the US or UK versions of Aftermath, and I'm not entirely sure which version I should be rating. I do know Paint It Black, and that is a clear standout of all the tracks on both albums. Having spent more time with this music, the rest of it is better than I remember the last time I listened to Aftermath in full. The misogynist lyrics are more of a problem for me on Stupid Girl than Under My Thumb, the latter being catchy enough to ignore the lyrics, the former being pretty uninteresting musically. I appreciate the 11 minute song Going Home, but I think it works best at the end of the album as on the US version rather than the end of side a - though I am listening on streaming rather than on vinyl. I Am Waiting and Out of Time are some more stand-outs. Compared to other canonical 1966 albums, i.e. Revolver, Pet Sounds and Blonde on Blonde, this is the weakest of the bunch. Nonetheless, it's a very strong album.
Classic
Solid album! Classic Rolling Stones. A few bangers, the rest nice.
I never seem to get sick of the stones. Mother’s little helper cracks me up. Under my thumb is just an awesome rock and roll song. I’ll take rolling stones over Beatles all day every day. Going home sounds like the doors. Great stuff. Out of time is such a 60s vibe - probably my favorite of this bunch.
Aftermath is a wonderful example of the power the Stones.
Probably the weakest Stones album I’ve had yet, but still enjoyed it. “Going Home” is a bit too long.
I liked "Lady Jane" and "Going home". Best song is "Under my thumb". 8/10
Bangers
I have always preferred Rolling Stones country influenced songs and not really their traditional rock songs, so was expecting not to really like this, but there was some really good songs on it. I would definitely listen to this again and might actually buy a copy if I came across it
“Fuck women”. What an idea for an album. What an ego these guys must have to all be in a state of upset with their respective love interests and all come to the conclusion that women be crazy AND THEN create such a banging group of songs. They aren’t all great, but some of these are iconic. Depending on which version you listen to, you get a different taste. The US version has “Paint It Black”, which is great, but it also has “Going Home” as the final track and no “Mother’s Little Helper” or “Out of Time”. I’d say that the British version is better curated, but they’re both within a margin of error that gives them the same score. This isn’t the best the Stones have to offer, but I enjoy it. Also, don’t sleep on “I Am Waiting”, shit goes hard. 4/5
Some classics on a good but not tremendous album. I prefer 70s Stones but this is a good listen as to what got them there.
Hurts me to not give it a 5 but still a great album.
Probably a five star but I wasn’t able to spend enough time with it Further proof that their best songs are the less popular songs
Really great album.
Maybe a couple of songs too long but we had fun
yeya
i had a better time than i was expecting listening to this album tbh, the instrumentals are on fucking fire
Paint it black
well, yes
I don't know why the UK version has Mother's Little Helper and the US version has Paint It Black but they're two of my favorite Stones songs so it's hard to decide which I prefer. Anyways, solid album with a few bangers but a couple of tracks are filler and Going Home takes way too long for such a boring song.
Vintage Stones, love it all
The Stones were a better R'n'B band than The Beatles. And this is a great set of songs, if not as inventive as Revolver. Some of the lesser-played cuts here - High & Dry and Flight 505 - are particularly fun here. And there haven't been many lyrics as acerbic as Mother's Little Helper written since, by The Stones or anyone else. A rollicking rollercoaster slice of London life in the Swinging Sixties.
Previously rated: The Rolling Stones (4/5) Beggars Banquet (5/5) Let it Bleed (5/5) ****************************** Note: Rating the UK version. There's some great stuff that I knew (Mother's Little Helper and Under My Thumb) and some that I didn't, like the silly but catchy Stupid Girl. Liked hearing the different instruments like the Marimba. What I didn't particularly care for was the 11 minute long Goin' Home. It drags down the first side of the record. That and a couple of other filler songs keep it from being a 5/5. One of the later tracks sounded very Beach Boys-ish with the "Bah-ba-ba-bah"s going on in the backup vocals. I didn't mind that.
8/10. Great album with some classics. Percussion / Charlie Watts really shines here.
I loved it, classic rock never misses
More of a 4.5/5
I LIKE it, a lot of drug references!
Amazing album
Favorite Track: Paint It, Black
You can tell the Stones were a band in transition at the time of this album recording...not the most amazing work but still pretty solid. Foretold of things to come. 3.5/5
UK or US version - both great....
Listened to both UK and US versions, averages out to a 4. Odd differences between the ablums. Only ~1/2 of each album has songs in common and I think both could use Paint it Black and Mother's Little Helper.
Lots of good stuff on here. Very solid.
Very good album. Several singles/hits. Interesting to hear how the band had grown from their previous album in their songwriting and use of different instruments on this album.
Another true classic
