I hated everything about this record.

Terrible, just terrible.

Why is this on here it’s just terrible marking the low point that pop grunge brought us to in the 90’s.

Make Yourself combines lots of the elements of late 90s radio rock - the heavy detuned grooves of Nu Metal, the whiney vocals and loud-quiet dynamics of emo, the influence of electronica, the hip hop DJ sounds, the post-grunge mid tempo sludge of butt rock yearning, the handsome guy singer of MTV rock, the DEEP emotional acoustic ballad, the aimless suburban rage of the time. I thought it sucked in the 90s and that their fans were a pathetic combination of frat morons, rollerbladers, and losers who couldn't commit to going full nu-metal goth. The music is maybe a bit better than I initially gave it credit for, but it is so tedious. 311 does the hip hop metal way better, Deftones do the serious emo stuff much better, Korn and Slipknot are way heavier hitting, and as much as they suck Limp Bizkit are more absurd and fun, so what's the point of this?

The whiny death throes of an angsty 20-something who failed to grow out of his edgelord teenage phase, set to misguided guitar riffs.

The music is very much the reason rock is stalled, boring, and nothing stands out. It's the prototype for Nickelback, it's that post-grunge that is just not good music. The only good thing I have to say about the album, is that it finished.

Ah Incubus, or as i like to call them, shitty SilverChair. I hated them in the late 90s/early 00s and it hasn't aged well since then.

Definitely could have died without listening to this. I’ve skipped or changed stations more incubus than I’ve ever listened to them. Was hoping the deeper cuts would be at least decent. Nope. The vocalist is terrible, the lyrics are pretentious, everything else is ok at best. What is even the genre, soft Nu-metal? Definitely sounds like a band finding their sound. I think they are still looking 25 years later. To sum up, this sucks hard.

Found this a bit repetitive and bland. Listened in the car and was told to turn it off 'this is awful, why is this on your list?'

Very back loaded, and not with particularly good songs only more recognisable ones. One I wouldnt have been gutted to miss.

Is this 90s butt rock? Straddling the line between Korn and 311, with a heavy dose of the Toadies. Big “I’m 13 and this is deep” vibes. I HATED Incubus back in the day. Listening to this 22 years later I'm relieved I hadn't missed anything and they are, indeed, absolute cack. From the opening bar, this annoyed me. The horrible vocal. The lame harmonies. The abysmal lyrics. Grating. A record completely devoid of anything remotely enjoyable or relatable. I will forever be angry that THIS was the type of music that was popular during my university years. Rating: 1/5 Playlist track: Drive Date listened: 14/05/24

ah yes, this era, with the computer graphics of what could be some kind of insect dragon and the innovative nu-alt-rock stylings that bring together a wide range of influences, from the obnoxious sounds of bad vocal pop to the obnoxious sounds of edgy macho nu-metal dudes. it of course features a song called Battlestar Scralatchtica. it fuckin sucks. Drive was on the radio all the time, and it was probably one of the better things on the radio. it's not good either. it's a funny song for Incubus to have done, and anybody who bought an album off the radio hit must have been surprised. this period for mainstream radio rock music was terrible. it made me feel like I would never enjoy an entire rock song. vocally there's a lot in common with the pop emo that would come a little later, and that was another era that sucked. music: hated. This freaking album. I remember when Drive came out I loved it, thought it was amazing. Checked out the rest of the album and hated every second that wasn’t Drive. Talk about a misleading single

Choppy, very choppy album. Liked two songs; Drive (good), and Battlestar (weird). Felt like the lead singer and the rest of the band were yelling at me for most of the album. Was glad when it was over. (1.5*s)

No my thing. At all. Found the vocals annoying and whiny. Some of the lyrics were laughable. Will not be listening again. Was a bit of a pain to get through, was excited for it to be over. Battelstar scralatchtica was awful. What was that??

There is very little here for me to like. It’s just softer Nu Metal and the record scratching is laughable. As the album went on, my opinion of it just got worse and worse.

Double Platinum? People are deluded.. Bloody racket except the Scratch track.

No. Sorry, just no. This thing drags like hell, three minutes feels like five. The vocals are annoying, instrumentation is bland, and it is a bit pretentious. Only one ok song here. Will not be coming back to this. I really just don’t like it.

Between the album cover and the album content, this is among the most 90’s albums to ever 90’s.

Bloody hell, a copy of this was in every students bedroom in the early noughties (not mine, I couldn't stand them, but I'll try to keep an open mind 20 years on). I hated Drive so much. It's like a charmless later era Chili Peppers. Which is quite a good description of the whole album. Like emo before it developed ambition and humour. Do I give them credit for letting their drummer and bassist jam with Cut Chemist and Nu Mark on Battlestar Scralatchica? It feels a single bright point on an otherwise dull album. But it feels like giving credit for a feature, which really just says 'these guys had a budget'.

Not what I came for. Lots of similar music might have been saved by nostalgia, but not this one

I never liked Incubus but to be fair, I never really gave them a shot besides a song here or a few seconds of a song there. So, I gave them a shot with this album. I still don’t like Incubus.

Awful. I tried to give this a fair shot by listening to every song, but midway through each I skipped to the next because I found bear it. Then I spent the first half of the next song wondering if the one after could be even worse. Dreadful.

Good lord this is terrible. I mean, technically competent - but it's awful, awful, awful. Derivative and of no substance whatsoever. I could imagine the only way you'd like this is if you'd grown up with it. Even then it'd have to be a guilty pleasure, surely.

I though this group was bullshit in 1999 and listening to a full album has not changed my mind. While I could hear an argument that some nu-metal was good or interesting, this watered down wannabe boy band is just crap.

That feeling where you're like, "I know this band, right? I've heard of them, what's their big song?" all throughout the album, and then finally a song starts that you recognize and it sucks

Just awful - the person who created this list has an unhealthy fascination with all forms of metal. Black Sabbath has a lot to answer for.

What the hell

First album I have got off this list that is absolutely horrible. Most of the album is Nu Metal garbage, uncreative. The single (drive?) seems completely out of place with the album up until that point. It's also one I usually change the station on when it comes on the radio. Battlestar scratchtica is the first one I didn't hate, not bad but not great.
