Funky and fun

Didn't know what to expect... So fucking groovy Was a fan :)

This is POWERFUL right out of the gate. It doesn't stop, either.

This fucking ROCKS like nothing else can. Fela is the MAN, and basically invented Afrobeat. The Africa '70 is phenomenal, untouchable in their talent. Find a version with the bonus track that is just a Ginger and Tony Allen doing a 16 minute drum solo. God damn I could listen to this all day!

Absolute bangers from start to finish. Hallucinatory, danceable, dangerous in the best of ways.

Excellent

I went into this with the wrong mindset, this first track is great. This is great funk music. This is how world music should sound. Other than the lyrics not being in English as an impediment, this should be way more well known to funk fans. I love the organ, the drums. Jazz albums are hit or miss for me and this one is a hit.

What a great soundtrack to my morning this was. An hour of funky grooves and just great energy and vibes. I saw someone call this elevator music on their review, so I'll just guess they think ketchup is too spicy. Bland palates are sad

Oh yea... I'm gonna rock this all night long

This is my new favorite album. I need to find this on vinyl. Friday night vibes, very groovy!

Very good. One of my favorite Fela albums I've listened to so far.

two of rythyms finest

This is a great groove and falls into the list of "I can't believe this is live". The drumming adds a lot of great texture. I enjoyed listening to this and could see me coming back. Huge performance.

The energy is great. I played through 2 and a half times. Driving in the rain to it was really clicking. This is very close to a five for me. I find myself trying to argue against a 5 and not coming up with anything strong. When it would finish I was disappointed it was over.

Loved this. Although not sure it needed Baker's 'indulgence'. Uplifting, raucous and joyous. As music should be.

Really liked it. Super fun album

Hammer! So viel Energie!

Stellar vibes. Ginger was nuts, but so, so great and Fela is no slouch either!

Wow. Even the drum solo is listenable. Fela Kuti was absolutely worthy of all the praise.

The power and fury

I was prepared, on first listen, to describe this as less than good. I found it repetitive, especially in the drumming. However - after coming back to it, I realise that - for a live recording - it's actually incredible. Don't get me wrong, I will always, always prefer studio-produced to live, but this is pretty dang good, like.

A live album … but wait ! It’s amazing !

Fantastic!

Something mesmerizing about both of these men. A cult of personality and a force of nature. Both speaking on the fringe of sanity and searching for the eternal groove. Wasn't sure how this mash up would go, they can both get pretty out there. But this one was a complete Reese's peanut butter cup for my ears. Everything jibes and it's like a hot summer night.

Wow! What a sound!

Wonderful. I’d heard nothing like it before.

This made my heart feel like it was floating. Mind-bending!

Mariana Trench level grooves from start to finish, the funk dial is pushed dangerously into the red. Fela looked at the Africa 70's 3 congo players, shekere, and Tony Allen on drums and said fuck it, more percussion! Ginger Baker going from Eric Clapton to Fela Kuti has to be music's biggest ever upgrade. The bass performance is incredible, the horns are blasting pure fire, Fela's organ parts rip, and the call and response singing generates even more energy. You could power a megacity off this album, and it's not even one of his best.

Great listen, unique and never boring

Marvellous African funky beat!

Not surprised to see this on some 'greatest live albums of all time' lists. This album absolutely rules from the drop. Incredibly funky and groovy throughout, you can't help but move to it.

Traveling to Lagos was the best decision Baker ever made. All the grooves in this are devastating.

Lovely to have an excuse to listen to this. Is there anything better than Fela for a road trip?

Hell yes. Fela Kuti is amazing and "Let's Start" is easily my favorite track of his. Though, I have a lot more listening I need to do. Wild that Ginger Baker from Cream is just on this. The groove is undeniable, the solos shred, I could listen to this forever.

Fuck yeah! This is exactly the type of album I was hoping for when I signed up for this challenge - something that slaps, but is so far out of my radar I would’ve never encountered it otherwise. Love the grooves on this album. All the instrumental sections are tight and interplay off eachother well. And even though they were sparse, I loved Kuti’s vocals when he did sing. You can feel his swagger cut through the tracks. Because of the cross influences, I think African music and jazz/funk pair well together. Almost like two long lost souls from a past life finding each other in this timeline.

Excellent

Fela Kuti brought afrobeat to the world's attention. Fela Kuti's dynamic personality as a bandleader, a multi-instrumentalist, and an ambassador for afrobeat music made him an international star. His bigger contribution may have been as a voice for Nigeria's poor and a political force in his country. Live! is a recording featuring Ginger Baker which is a great example of Fela Kuti's music: polyrhythms, blaring horns, and his near-rap/scat vocals. The combination makes very danceable music of infectious energy.

Even though I couldn't understand any if the words, this was a great album. I had to listen to it twice.

Fantastic. What a pleasure to put on today. The band is incredible. They have such a big, robust sound. They rock hard, have an awesome funk rhythm and then unleash these killer jazz solos and extended jams. A+ all around. Great energy. The drum solo bonus track was cool too!

Fantastic, no surprise when you’ve got Fela and Ginger.

Insane talent!! It was pretty neat to listen to Ginger Baker's take on traditional African music. Fela is so fantastic! Favourite songs: Let's Start, Black Man's Cry, Ye Ye De Smell, Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) Least favourite songs: none 5/5

Fantastic!!

Side 1 was repetitive and boring. Side 2 was pretty good.

I wish I could give this a 4.5, without a doubt it's an exceptional album with no misses so a 4 is insufficient, but subjectively I don't think I'll be putting this on too often so a 5 feels like a step too far. That being said, the energy is undeniable, and the talent impossible to miss. This is the kind of album you put on and I find it hard to imagine someone telling you to turn it off, it brings good vibes and upbeat percussion you have to love.

Fela Kuti is another artist that I was introduced to by Grand Theft Auto, on the GTAIV soundtrack. This is a brilliant live album, high energy afrobeat with a touch of muscular 70s funk. Fela promises 4 songs at the start of the set, but listen out for a 16 minute bonus track featuring a drum battle between Tony Allen and guest star Ginger Baker from Cream.

This is good. So good! I love jazz, and this takes it to a new dimension. The rythm section is insane, and it really puts you in a sort of trance. It's hard to refrain to get up and dance listening to this record. Amazing

A favorite. A great one to introduce the uninitiated to Fela.

Fela's albums already felt like you were listening to a live band just jamming out for 15+ minutes on some sick grooves. This just ups the energy by even more, the band sound fantastic. 60 minutes of music doesn't get much easier to listen to than this.

Loved it!

Funky, jazzy, high-energy afrobeat by the undisputed king of the genre. Throwing Ginger Baker in there creates a symbiosis that makes this album as great as anything else on the list. Pure soul from every single band member working as a team. Fun as hell and now my new favorite album. Love love love.

I'm glad this album came up so soon after Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" so the album was still kind of fresh in my head. Because it just confirms what I said in my review at the time—just listen to real afrobeat instead of listening to their sad facsimile of it. Fela Kuti is legendary, but while I've listened to him in the past and seen some of his performances, I'm woefully unfamiliar with most of his catalog. This show was incredible and might be the first live album I've heard from this list where I actually understand why it's on here. The music combines traditional African percussion and polyrhythms with Western funk and jazz, and it's a party from start to finish. The sound is vibrant and the mixing is great, and you really get the energy from the live performance. That said, if I didn't know there was another Fele Kuti album on this list I'd actually be kind of pissed that this was here. He's such an influential musician, and he doesn't need some white guy from England (the drummer from Cream) to help translate his music for Western audiences. The king of afrobeat should be listened to simply because he makes great music, no matter where you come from. 5/5

What a gem! Such funky upbeat music. Loved this album. Add in Ginger Baker, takes it from 4 stars to 5.

Such a Jam!

Filing this under "how did I not know about this album earlier"? The drum solo made me want to get up and dance, so I did

Great collaboration

Amazing energy and vibe, virtuosic drum performances

Last song, “Carry Me”, gets a bit too ridiculous with the kick drum at one point, but overall, this album is a fantastic listen. Really opening my eyes (ears) to the idea of gathering more LIVE albums.

Amazing !

Fela's energy is infectious. The percussion, horns, and keys/guitar improvisations kept me hooked. Unknowingly had this record on loop for most of the day.

Insane album. Percussion is incredible. Never heard of Fela Kuti but his energy is infectious. Check out his wikipedia page. Groovy jazzy african inspired music.

Yeah. I mean. Yeah.

I don't think this is available in the states

5/5 excellent

Fela Kuti is becoming a favorite artist of mine because of this site. A fantastically prolific artist who has music on the brain.

Incredible. First 5 star album I've gotten.

Listened to Fela Kuti before but this album was new to me. Brilliant stuff

Fantastic!

Listen this at: 02/02/2024.

Incredible

5* awesome

I was expecting a lot of drum solos…but instead this is an amazing album. Great combo of Afrobeat/soul/jazz, absolutely fantastic. Okay ya, last track is a 17-minute drum duo duel, but it is still listenable. This was a real treat to find.

good vibes!

The father of afrobeat. An absolute fave!

Classic!

There’s a story I remember reading at some point about the guy who was hired to play bass on Rapper’s Delight. He was told that he was supposed to play the same thing, the Chic sample, over and over again for 15 minutes straight, so that somebody could ‘talk real fast over it.’ This has always really struck me as an anecdote, because it relays in just a few sentences what the life of a studio or touring musician must really be like. None of that pretentious, artistic, express yourself through the music crap. Get out their, and play the riff perfectly for 15 straight minutes. The Rapper’s Delight anecdote betrays a dissonance with the fundamental idea of a lot of art, that I proposition comes from the way that writers and painters have been treated especially in Europe since, by my reckoning the Roman empire, but especially since the Renaissance. This is the idea of the genius. We hold an idea of an artist, as an individual, an auteur, presenting their own individual image for an artwork, and spending the time setting it to canvas or paper without interference, producing works of genius this way. Of course, we understand that this doesn’t work quite the same way for instances where groups are needed: film and television, theatre, music all require ensembles. But we have just as much tendency to place the overall credit of a collaborative work’s success or failure on just a handful of people: the director, the playwright, the songwriter. We are in the habit of seeing all art as the work of one genius. I’ve extolled the work of collaborative efforts in previous album reviews. For some reason they all seem to have been Rap albums, which I will have to do some further thinking about. But, it seems unfortunately necessary to point out that all artistic endeavours are inevitably group ones. Nobody can do everything, and nobody can do everything well. I’ve talked about Prince and how much I love everything but his production before. But he wouldn’t have been in the position he got himself into without people willing to promote him, play him, play with him live. Even the commercial side of of art is collaborative. I am obviously not the first critic to point this dilemma out. Necessarily, I am building on the work of other people, criticism is just as much a collaborative medium, if through proxy. Music it seems is even more so afflicted, the big names are almost always the singers or the bandleaders, the people who get top billing and so the most attention. Listening to Fela Kuti it’s easy to forget that there are a dozen other people on stage giving as much as they can to the performance. The best I’ve ever felt about my contribution to live music I’ve played was a night playing rhythm guitar in an Irish Folk group. Although I was just providing a basis for the strings and wind, it felt such an essential element, as if I was a bigger prt of something. Live!’s music is so vital and full of life, and as charismatic as Kuti is, I think that it’s important to remember the bass players, the Maurice Epko’s of this world, who provide so much grounding to the music we love, and do it not for the stardom, but for the love of the music. So to all of the unknown musicians out there. Thank you

Fantastic album! Great for listening while doing creative things.

Absolutely stunning. I want to get a record player just to play this album. What a wonderful funky brassy delightful time. Obviously no skips and saved the whole album.

A nice jazz album with elements of world music. The fact that it is a live recording makes it feel more dynamic.

Thoroughly enjoyable album from start to finish. Great to listen to whether you are paying full attention, or playing in the background.

Fireeeeeeeee

Really loved! Found myself dancing and humming. Liked that it was live too.

loved it, esp Ye Ye De Smell. What a treat!

Fuuuuuck. This album blew me away. Amazing from start to finish. Truly a perfect album

Lovely funk. Another day and already another artist I hadn't heard of. It's clear these guy were having a ton of fun on stage. Favorite song: Egbe Mi O (Carry Me).

Seven stars

[Ginger Baker brought me here, but Fela Kuti kept me around the place.] Dangerous funky mix! If'n you can't dance to this mess, you are D-E-A-D! I suspect this music, administered in prodigious quantities with my wife's homemade borscht, could BRING BACK the dead! Dude can play the shit outta' that baritone sax, too! This band is old-school tight, something that I really don't hear in today's bands. The percussion section really brought the house down! I strongly suspect that pop musicians around the world secretly listen to this band, and dream what their music could actually become... If you want to hear a boatload of great musicians come together to make extraordinarily danceable music, Fela Kuti is right up your alley...

Amazing

Love this. Want to buy the vinyl!

Awesome album

Very cool, very fun

I would give anything to go back in time and see this performance. Everybody in the band is so in sync and playing super tight. You can feel the energy even today.

Utterly amazing. I enjoyed this so much.

Omg best album!! I couldn’t stop moving the entire time

This is absolutely scrumptious

Ginger Baker two days in a row. Wild. This is worlds better than any cream album though. Holy smokes, funkingroovin

Wow so cool! I had never really explored afrobeat, but what an introduction to it! I was working while listening to the album, so I ended up zoning out a little and was amazed pop up 1 hour later with only 5 tracks past. Each song is such a jam, and I love picking up notes of the many musical styles blended in. Black Man's cry is a stand out ofc, but the Tony Allen Drum Solo is killer and it blew my mind that a 17 minute track was devoted to that solo. I'm super glad I listened to this album - it's been added to my favorites.

What a fun, energetic album. It feels so fresh among so many medium rock albums. Maybe I should discover more Fela Kuti.

Loved the beat!

I'm partial to life albums, they always have more energy and are more fun to listen to. This was no exception

I bet this sounds amazing on vinyl. This is one artist I have stayed away from on purpose because I was afraid he would be amazing. And guess what? He is.

That drum solo on the final track. This was great.

I la-la-love this kind of music, 5/7 a perfect score!

This is funky, I like it but the songs are like 6 min too long. I still feel like giving this a 4.5 or maybe a 4.25 but ill round up. These groves are so tight. I can see myself coming back to this.

Stuff like this is the reason I started this 1001 project. The electricity in the room is palpable in this album. Imagine seeing this live.

TENES QUE CERRAR EL ESTADIO 9/10

Great. Upbeat, energetic. I really like Fela.

Only listened to half the album but that shit revived my soul.

This has been on my vinyl bucket list since I watched the ginger baker documentary wanted my first listen of this to be on vinyl but I think this is a fantastic excuse to listen. Wow that was incredible I usually download the album we’re listening to for the day then delete it next day but this one is staying on my phone such an incredible sound I’m sure by now you all know my sexual tensions with horns and what it does to my tip well lemme tell ya this made me not cream my tip but full bust cum jizz skeet piss and shit out my tip I’m talking clean up in aisle Brendan’s pants. The drums on this album are crazy the bass is awesome my favorite song is ye ye de smell but every song is a ten for me the battling drums at the end were an incredible end to an awesome record. I started this on my walk home in the dark and cold and it set the mood for the rest of my night. I cannot wait to listen to this again and again and I cannot wait to get this on vinyl. -B (usting big nuts)

Great album. Ginger Baker goes off. 5/5

Great jams

Fela Kuti got me into Afrobeats long time ago, however, I didn’t know of this album. This was incredible. The recording quality is incredible for it being a live recording and the two last tracks will carry me forever. I think the best drum solo duo ever made. 10/10

5* - magic

One could listen to this all day ... and has, in fact, just done so. One would also like to see a documentary about Ginger Baker's time in Lagos. Pound for pound, note for note, this might be the coolest, hippest album in this whole lot of a thousand plus.

Fantastic, my first 5 star album. Just an amazing 1hr set with incredible instrumentals, feeling, and vocals. Absolutely banging performance.

Serious groove. Blissfully blasting this on a walk after work — bobbing my head, mouthing the bass lines, feeling euphoric.

Wow, never heard this gem before until now and it's s-s-s-s-mokin.

Fela's the goat no question. Ginger Bakers drums did more for me on this than I expected, they worked well. Fela's band has always been killer tight but the production for the time was really really good for a live album, a lot of shitty sounding ones going round those days

Funky! Great rhythm and felas personality is untouchable

Wow, the blending of American Jazz/African rhythms is out of this world. A one of a kind group. Killer stuff.

This is the first album I’ve reviewed in a while in this app. Coincidentally, I got this record in vinyl a month ago and have listened to it multiple times. I also had a conversation with a Nigerian Uber driver about Fela and his influence on Nigerian people. He recommended chief commander ebenezer obey. This album is great, the instrumentation is upbeat, and the collab with Chet Baker is unique. The drums are 💯

Wow! great album

5. My God, this is some amazing stuff. This is the first I've heard of them, but I'll definitely have to look into more of their music.

Just incredible. Two massively influential musicians at their best.

Love some Fela Kuti!

Me encantó. Comprar !

Super funky and a joy to listen to!

The gracious generator has already served me Zombie so I knew I was going to love this. And it sure did not disappoint!

Excellent

This is a really amazing album. You can feel the energy in the room and the production is incredible, especially for a live in-studio album. The vibe that Fela Kuti develops with his band is unmatched and it's cool to hear Ginger Baker playing with them. This is an easy 5/5. Standout Tracks: Let's Start, Black Man's Cry, Ye Ye De Smell, Egbe Mi O (Carry Me)

Bursting with energy from a group of supremely talented musicians. Fela Kuti’s life is well worth reading up on.

October 5 2023 Good - loved the energy

This album was fantastic and sonically engaging from beginning to end. You could feel the energy through the recording as if you were attending the live show!

WOW. I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but this is truly spectacular music. Super groovy, and you just want to keep listening. Way too short!

Very solid. 4.7

You can probably skip the bonus track (16 minute long drum duet, I kinda dug it but I'm weird that way), the rest is 🔥 though.

Great record!

great beats

This is the first live album I've had to review for the 1001 albums. And my god, am I glad it was this one. There is only one song on this album under 10 minutes long, and I'm not mad in the slightest, because this is some grade A shit right here. I didn't know this about myself until today, but I love Nigerian Afrobeat music. And Fela is the master at it, and one of the big reasons why the genre is known internationally today. I wasn't familiar with who Ginger Baker was up until hearing this, but I knew of Cream, so to learn one of the first real drumming legends met with a West African musician to create music that is most definitely not something you would hear Western audiences listening to is absolutely beautiful. And Ginger does a fantastic job on his songs, alongside Tony Allen. I also have this deep love for brass sections in jazz influenced music. Line a bunch of horns up and play them like they are played in this recording, and it will sound good every time. They are sharp and bright, and give a serious punch to the album. It is just pleasant to my ears, and I want more of it. I think the only complaint someone could make towards this album would be that the songs are slightly repetitive in some places, but the pacing is balanced well enough so that whenever you feel like you are getting tired of a certain rhythm or chord progression, it switches it up and moves to the next. Every song on this is incredible, but the song I have the least love for is probably "Black Man's Cry", just because it tries the least number of interesting things. But that isn't saying very much, considering this album is well above average compared to most live performances. Like the last couple of minutes in "Egbe Mi O" is probably the best on the entire album. Fela's incredibly lively personality allows him to get the entire audience to sing along, and that kind of crowd interaction is so wonderful. Another beautiful artist taken away from us far too soon. Truly was a pioneer of his own genre, and to see two musicians who are hugely popular in their own spaces, but otherwise unknown to each other, come together and create art like this, inspires me to do the same.

Awesome album

This album is a lot of fun!

Wonderful vibe! First time even hearing about them and I had a great time listening to it. All sorts of groovy.

Goosebumps

I'm giving it a five in spite of the Ginger Baker distraction. Kuti is even better without it.

Supremely groovy. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

Awesome, could use some more of this...

Perfect jamming music

My dad introduced me to Fela when I was younger and so I’ve always had a soft spot for his funky and insanely groovy Afro music, so knowing he collaborated with a Rock legend in Ginger Baker on five tracks which are great is comforting and a wonderful surprise. 5/5

Class. So good. Up there with some of the best live albums

Kuti is King.

One of the most tight performances ever recorded. Fela Kuti and his band’s consistency and sheer talent along with Ginger Baker's ability to blend in with the band by easily learning the afrobeat style makes this a hell of a live performance!

I'd never listened to this before. Although I generally enjoy most West African music I guess I rarely venture into Nigeria. The inclusion of Baker is interesting, although I'm not entirely sure whether it's necessary, what with Tony Allen being a genius and everything. When European heritage musicians get too involved it's always a question mark, but I enjoyed everything on here and I'd certainly listen to this again. A lovely mix of styles and tracks where you don't notice the length. Usually drum solos are red flags. This is the third album in 96 that's had one. The other two were gratuitous and, frankly, sucked a bit. This one, recorded way after the album was, actually worked. I imagine it's the duelling drummers thing. This is probably 4.5 stars, but it's a rare African record on the list so that pushes it to 5.

What a delight. I had no idea what to expect. It’s summer and hot and I was listening to a Bob Dylan Album and just not feeling it. I decided to give this one a shot since it was next in the queue and I listened to it a couple more times over the course of the weekend. Something very different and blew my mind in a way I wasn’t expecting.

This is very cool if you like drumming, Fela Kuti, and afrobeat. It's also cool if you don't like drumming, because Fela Kuti was the man. Maybe the most important figure in bringing non-western music into the Western hemisphere? Anyways, this live album is a completely enjoyable ride through and through.

The father of afrobeat puts on a phenomenal show accompanied by one of the greatest drummers of all time! Ginger Baker also appears later on.

Great great sounds and swing and soul. L

18 min track, unexpected Mesmerizing drums, all drums, but that’s all it needs. Fantastic, must listen

HO-LY-SHIT! I knew about this performance is the documentary Beware Ginger Baker. Which is a must watch by the way. But I had no idea it was this superb. I gotta find this on vinyl now.

Mahtava! Ihan mahtava! 5/5

Chanting and drumming. The base for so much good music. A primal need. Even my two year old sung along with the Fela and the audience on the last track. At the same time that the music speaks to me on a bodily level with its repetition, chanting and jamming it is utterly complex and exciting music that tickles my mind. Fela Kutis music always feel like it’s live. No surprise that this proper live album is great.

Beautiful album, full of life. I like this kind of jazz. Amazing!

an easy 4 or 5. It was cooking from the first track "lets get started what we came into the room to do". a whole new artist for me. Ginga Bekaaar. I was transported easily to another time and place. grooving background bop, made me think of shuffling around while cooking, and its pure gentle propulsion. Irrisistable drum music from africa, with synthesizer, standard drumkit, and a bunch of stuff, even horns... the audio quality for a live recording in 1970 is very good. not a boring moment either, despite the improv bits. SO I went on the net to read that it is "The album is on Rolling Stone's list of the 50 greatest live albums of all time. " yeah I see that. so which one is the Ginger and do he Smeeell? :-)

One of the greats

Phenomenal Drumming by Ginger Baker, and I can’t imagine how this helped expand his drumming for future projects, it’s a good introduction to African rooted music, and the last track on the album was by far the best. (16 min Drum Duet)

If you don’t start dancing and swaying when listening to this album, you just don’t get it. What an amazing performance, wish I could see a video of this show

Really enjoyed this one. 4.5/5

Had to listen through YouTube as the version on Amazon music was two drum solos that I guessed wouldn't have made the 1001 album cut. Glad I did, it was great! Loved the African jazz sound, drumming was great, more Fela Kuti please.

unreal, worthy member of this list. could probably cut this list down to 100 albums and this would still easily hold its place. expansive, funky, energetic bliss. musically, very addictive.

Certified banger

One of the best live performances of all time, true pioneer

Lovely grooves

African progressive rock basically. I love the singing and the combination of western and African instruments, plus the drum solo track went hard

a groove

This was a good album to have on in the background today. Lots of percussion, but arranged in a manner that it didn't overtake the music. Paul Simon would use very similar styles on his Rhythm of the Saints album in the early 90s. You have to enjoy anything that sounds like a drum circle.

Magical sound.

Incredible

Drumming

excellent.

Ginger Baker an absolute and literal (if the documentaries are to be believed) mad man. What a performance by both of them. Incredible live album and definitely one to listen to again.

Very good! Loved it

Yes these are the albums that make this project worth while. Iv never heard of Fela Kuti before, this is the best African album Iv heard and one of the best live albums. You just can’t help but dance to these songs, the energy is brilliant. And ginger baker on the drums just tops this off, a live album masterpiece.

Fantastic. Utterly inspiring.

live bands are really hit or miss for me but this one was a pleasant and funky surprise on all fronts. modern day afrobeats has been deservedly taking the world by storm but it's nice to see its forebearers laying the groundwork so to speak

5 Jazz

Now this will keep you warm on a cold day! Which it is, very cold today, below zero. I wonder how Tony Allen felt about Ginger Baker treading on his territory. Loved listening to this. Not very familiar with Fela's discography so I am not sure how this sits with the others but the music is undeniably vital, so grooving, I could listen to it all day!

Always love Fela's monster jams. You gotta have some serious fuckin chops to keep up with Fela, and Ginger Baker definitely passes muster.

Classic Afro-beat! Incredible performance. A "must-hear" album.

just wonderful, would have appreciated if spotify would have had all 5 songs and not just 4 but still amazing🥰

That's cool! I enjoy this fantastic album! I'm giving the best rating. - This outstanding album gives what you expect from this marvellous era. ***** - Great rhythmic patterns and powerful grooves. ***** I can feel the magic, and my feet follow the beats from the first notes of every song. ***** I was looking for something like that. Thank you very much!

That was fun.

Damn this was good. Good vibes all-round.

Holy crap. I was blown away here. Rated one of the best live albums ever. I didn’t realize Ginger Baker had such chops. This whole album has an underlying jazz feel to it that meets so nicely with Fela Kuti’s music. No complaints.

I came across this album some time ago as I was exploring Ginger Baker's catalog. I don't get out much to be honest. I was hooked on Fela after one listen of this album and Afrobeat in general for which Fela is the originator. Watch Beware Mr Baker to see more about this album and Ginger, it's worth a watch.

jaming

I had enjoyed Fela Kuti's "Zombie" album when it came up on randomly on the generator. I really dug the afro-jazz vibe. And now, with Ginger Baker added in to the mix, this made it even better. The bonus track: do we need a 16 minute drum solo? No, but it's still nice to hear. Baker is infamous for this, the song "Toad" by Cream, performed live has a THIRTEEN minute drum solo. So a 16 minute drum duet is no surprise. The other songs are in the same vein as "Zombie," although a bit more scat-singing. So high marks from me!

Never did get around to checking out more Fela Kuti since his last awesome album showed up on this last. More of the same - really dug the opening track and enjoyed the second track but not quite as much. Then comes the addition of Ginger Baker - was not aware how good he really was. Damn. Plus the Africa '70 is still killing it. Was feeling like a 4, maybe 4.5 for me but I'm going to round up because this is a live album that doesn't sound live and tired at times.

Kuvittelin itten Pori Jazzeille, viltillä rinteessä, hyvässä seurassa ja Fela Kuti jamittelee päälavalla. Aurinko paistaa ja ukkelilla maailman levein hymy

This album is a reminder that I need to explore Fela Kuti so much more. I've listened to an album here or there but really need to dive deeper. This was fantastic.

This is the sort of album I want to hear on this list.

Hot damn.

Fantastic music.

One of the all time great live albums you'll ever hear.

I wasn’t at all sure what to expect here, but when they started playing on the first track, I was totally into it! Totally jamming’!

Wow! This album is hot! Great sounding recording. The horns and drums are off the hook! The patter made it a vibrant, live experience - really enjoyed the call-and-response in “Carry Me I Want To Die.” Happy to have this LIVE! album in the rotation.

This is what I'm doing this for. Love a bit of Afrobeat and well aware of Fela Kuti's legend (and of course Ginger Baker's) but not got around to listening to many legendary albums. The groove is alive. Oh my god, the drumming. Superb

Excellent

Fela is a god. This album is killer. Another I'll need to pick up on vinyl.

Great!!

pesado

This was great! Way outside the stuff I normally listen to, and I listened to it twice back to back. Killer.

Fela Kuti clocking in another smooth funk masterpiece. Ginger Baker absolutely kills it on the drums.

Hah hah, awesome! I'm expecting a bunch of commenters losing their damn minds at the 16 minute long drum solo... I could listen to afrobeat all day, and this is a great example of the genre. Fave track - "Black Man's Cry" - funky as hell!

What an intro! Great subsequent tracks. Would have loved to watch the concert live

Bopping from start to finish. The legend Fela with two legendary drummers on board? Can't get better than that!

An excellent performance by Fela, and getting this early taste is very illuminating in how he reached stardom in the way he did.

Awesome album!

Super groovy! Loved it.

Hot, hot, hot afrobeat featuring one of rock's all-time great drummers. The chemistry among all these musicians is unreal, and the product bleeds cool. I would put this among the best live albums I've ever heard.

This album took over my body from start to finish. INSANE grooves and musicianship + the brass are perfect. Furthermore, I think this is the best performance I've ever heard of Ginger Baker, who is amongst my best drummers. It instantly became one of my favorite live recording. I will need to buy this live on vinyl.

Felt is God

Awesome. Love fela kuti.

djöfull langar mig á einhverja svona insane live tónleika þetta er epic, groovy as shit tónlist

I hadn't really listened to much Fela, but when I heard "Let's start" it kind of blew my mind. The way it opens, the slowdown, the return to the original groove, amazing. The rest of the album doesn't hit those heights but is still awe-inspiring.

Rhythm section so solid

Love Fela.

Brilliant! 6 stars.

boom - like it!

Stunning AfroBeat album. A truly incredible band joined by a masterful Ginger Baker. Fela Kuti is an iconic figure who inspired a generation and stood for resistance to power through MUSIC. What a force. This sound could start a Revolution and we get to listen. We’ve been blessed.

This was far and away one of the best live recordings I've ever heard! The instruments were all so vibrant it felt like I was actually at the show. And the drum solo at the end was amazing. This is probably my favorite record off this list so far that I hadn't already heard or been aware of already. Pure excellence!

I’ve heard the name but have never listened to Fela Kuti before today. Great performance! Getting deeper into Afro Beat now.

One of the greatest live albums ever

Flamboyant and beautifully produced. Joyous.

Really impressive album. A good dose of funk, rock, Afrobeat, and soul. The live feel is incredible. Most tracks are too long for quick, casual listening, but otherwise this is a great project.

A full hour of very good listening. Started how it meant to continue. Initially I was gonna go 4 but I think it's a soft 5

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Well God damn, this was just a bunch of supremely talented musicians going the fuck off for the better part of an hour. The drum solo bonus track is a bit much (as I'm finding bonus tracks to be so far), but the rest just washed over me almost instantaneously. Kuti is an awesome frontman and Paul Simon should've taken some vacation tips from Ginger Baker. Key Tracks: Black Man's Cry, Ye Ye De Smell

I've got nothing clever or profound to say. Transcendent music.

Got my blood pumping

Gimme this all day. Added to the Drinking and game playing rotation. Good candidate for vinyl purchase

Totally bitchin from start to finish. Another rare instance where I wanted this album to be twice as long. Working Freeform radio in college, Fela was a name I had heard a bunch, but I don't think I ever sat down and listened to an album before.

Amazing album

Love this album!!!!!!

Effin awesome energy & groove

Absolutely love it!

Amazing! Love the Afro vibes in everything, specially the vocals. The whole band sounds in the same vibe! I quite enjoy the Funky/Jazzy/Fusion elements and this is a live gig which makes the album much better for the real feel of the genre and the musicians involved. Everything sounds like it should for me. 5 Stars.

Groovy!!!

I LOVE this music, it's so catchy and refreshingly different than what I normally listen to, makes me want to dance

This album feels like a big jam session and I love it. I love the use of horns and percussion and Ginger Baker on the drums is a great time. Now if only I could understand what he's singing about... Favorite Track(s): "Black Man's Cry" and "Ye Ye De Smell"

Fantastic drumming and percussion, with some horns thrown in for texture. This is the best non-Kanye album on the list so far.

I love anything Fela Kuti did. This album is awesome.

UFFA! QUÉ CHULADA.

Amazing world music. My first listen, but not my partner's.

I liked it a lot

Obsessed with the way Fela Kuti says "Ginger Bakerrr". Such great energy and reading about Fela Kuti made it all even more interesting. I genuinely believe this is an album people should hear before they die. Favourite song: Egbe Mi O (Carry Me) Least: Ginger Baker and Tony Allen Drum Solo

Vibes - Impeccable Drums - Groovy Energy - Funky So danceable, it's impossible to have a bad time while listening to this. Favorite Song: Ginger Baker And Tony Allen Drum Solo

This is what I signed up for. New album for me, very good.

Not exactly a huge fan of afro music, but this was really good.

Sjukt duktiga musiker! Kommer säkert återvända till detta album igen.

fela cutie

Despite this being a "live in studio" album rather than a true live album with an audience, it has the energy of a true live album. You can hear the joy Kuti has for performing in his banter between songs. Kuti's work is always heavy on improvisation, so the feel of the album isn't all that different from his studio work. But things are a little punchier, perhaps a little looser. Baker only appears on the latter two songs, and outside of a drum solo on the third track it's hard to pinpoint his contributions. This is mostly because Tony Allen brings such strong percussion to the rest of the album. The sing-a-long on the fourth track is the most joyous moment on the album, but the whole thing is bursting with energy and ideas.

This knocked my socks off. What a fantastic live album, which only loses a star due to this reviewer's dislike for 16-minute drum tracks. 8/10

its sooo good. never heard the name of the artist before, but damn thats lots of skill and especially "Black Mans Cry" is an awesome track. Sadly the last track is just 16min of drum solo.

Jazzy, energetic, fun. Long, live recordings. Enjoyed, but did not finish.

Pure groove \m/

Wow! What a great album, the 12 minute drum solo sealed the 4 for me!

I like the songs they’re very fun and fun and jazzy

fun background music

Een van de betere live platen. Drumsolo is top, extra ster daarvoor.

Really good Afrobeat/Funk album, great to listen to either as ambient, or as a normal listen.

Really enjoyed this! A nice 5-track 62-minute record to put on and get lost in. Felas band and Ginger really work together well and every track is like an adventure.

I never heard off him, but he is REALLY GOOD, i like the vibes off the álbum and de language, i dont think i heard a african álbum. 4,5/5 its not the type off music that i listen all the time, but on summer or when a happy mood comes, thats what im looking for.

The more I hear from Fela, the more I like him. And you can't go wrong with a 15 minute drum solo to end the album.

Amazing rhythms on this album. A drummers delight.

I love live in studio albums. Fela was an enthralling performer but so prolific. It’s hard to know if this is one of his best, but like many live albums on the generator it is an amazing document of his talent.

8 / 10

No idea going in… Didn’t realize Ginger Baker was the drummer for Cream. Didn’t dig the Cream offering… except for the drums, if I recall. So… what can I say? This was way better than Cream? The 17 minute drum duet was definitely my favorite part. That shit got saved and will keep me coming back. The rest is… good. Not mind blowing. But good. This is a solid 4 Boolean: yes, absolutely, why I am engaged in this exercise, so I can hear all this that I would have missed before I die.

This guy's Wikipedia page was a FASCINATING read. Music was good too!

Epitome of afro-beat music; the rhythm and beats are great; you feel the intensity of their live performance; you can let this album play without skipping

Good stuff! 4/5

So I do have multiple of these going. This is the second time this has come up in the last few days. I think it still gets a 4. Ginger Baker is way better without Cream Boolean: yes

So I have a number of these projects going. Sorry, 1 album a day ain’t doing it for me. I’m a month in and there has been surprisingly little overlap. But here we have one, back to back. Today I listened a second time. I gave this a 4 yesterday. It’s still a 4 today. Drum duet is still the highlight. Still think Ginger Baker is way more awesome drumming with this ensemble than with Cream. Eric Clapton ain’t nothing special as far as I can tell from solo and collaborative works I’ve sat through. So 4. Boolean:yes

Interesting. I like the jazz and the African rythms. Although there were parts a bit monotonous.3,5/5.
