surprisingly good
I know nothing of Cyndi Lauper, or much about the early 80s scene, but this album sounds like a direct ancestor of a lot of very familiar synth pop. I know all the iconic synths and drum machines were new at this time, and artists were seeing what they could do with them. Sounds like Cyndi helped set the mold for giddy, girly pop bangers - some of which I'm sure I've heard mixed in at Electric Feels. Cyndi walked so No Doubt, Metric, and Grimes could run.
I can’t handle the 80s. The electronic beats are just not my jam but Cindy Lauper is my jam. She’s fun and silly and has a very no fucks given feel and I respect that. Her vibe is fun and free without being cocky like many of the artists we’ve covered. Unfortunately, this whole album just makes me think of Robin Sparkles so thanks HIMYM for that. Witness sounds like what Gwen Stefani sang in her bedroom growing up. What in the Betty Boop is the end of He’s So Unusual?? When You Were Mine is my favorite song on the album. Overall, despite the fact that this album sounds so very 80s I enjoyed it a lot and would gladly dance around my house flinging my arms about and pretending I’m in a John Hughes movie.
I love that first chord hit to open the album. Girls just wanna have fun feels like cheese dick movie soundtrack bullshit but it’s pretty fun in the context of the album. There really does feel like there’s a light innocence to it and a message of “girls will be girls” the same way we say “boys will be boys.” This is prime mall frolicking music. Iron and Wine has a cover of Time After Time that is gorgeous and showcased what brilliant songwriting is at work here. It’s fitting that Napoleon and Deb danced the night away to it. All Through the Night is the birth of synth/glitch pop. Charlie XCX owes a debt. This album was a fuckin blast. A genre I don’t particularly love from a decade I don’t particularly love yet I really love this album. This album makes me think Cyndi was super fun to hang with. Why isn’t Cyndi Lauper used as a measuring stick for pop success? Like if Olivia Rodrigo can experience Lauper level success, then that’s kind of the apex. And good lord she’s got some dynamic vocals. Time after time will still be in play long after I’m dead. At least I certainly hope so.
Sometimes this album is annoying, sometimes it bangs, but overall it is extremely 80s in an endearing way and fills me with nostalgia. It is clearly an inspiration for other albums and defined a decade.
Epic debut album from Cyndi Lauper after her band failure. Pop rock, synth pop and new wave in 1983! I wanna say here that besides her distinctive and unique(almost punkish with incredible range)voice,Cyndi is also an amazing musician playing the dulcimer and guitar though not a lead guitarist in her albums. What can you say about an album that contains Girls just wanna have fun and Time after Time(my all time favourite-dreamy song with killer lyrics and that longing feeling and superb use of hihats from start to finish-what)? Full of great energy, nostalgic synths, gated snares, arpeggiated bass and fantastic guitars! Tracks i love beyond the obvious: When you were mine,All through the night(that synth arp kills me though the lead synth nearly destroys the song). This is for 4 stars though because her expressionism and creativity in her voice might gets too much in the rest of the songs.
She manages to be completely unique but still pop at the same time, and an icon to the eccentric. I didn't realize that only 3 of the songs were originals...but three of the best. My favorite track is her cover of Prince's When You Were Mine...and she does it so much better than he did. She's still one of the coolest chicks around.
First half of the album feels like ultimate 80s pop and it's awesome. Second half gets meh. Decent album overall.
Was there ever a bigger glow-up than Hazard's version of "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" to Lauper's? This album is a lot of fun, even if it tails off a little towards the end. A strong four.
Quite enjoyable! I think there's a lot of cool musical ideas in all the songs. Kind of wish pop had these more intrictate new wave instrumentals now lol. The songs are catchy but there also moves through pretty well between different instrumentation and sounds that I think you don't really see in a lot of pop now I think. This is more the case for the deep cuts, the hits like "Time after Time" and "Girls Wanna Have Fun". Solid pop album. Unfortunate a Romanian slur is used quite prominent in one of the songs lol. I think I might appreciate more with repeated listens and when I am in a better mood but right now I am comfortable giving it 4 stars. 12/9/25
I'd forgotten how many hits were on this album. That run from "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" through "All Through the Night" is amazing—the rest of the album can't help but pale in comparison, though "Money Changes Everything" is pretty great.
Yay Feminism! Last two songs were weird. Essential 80s stuff.
When She Bop, You Bop, We Bop
(76/100)
Wow two hits one album. She’s an icon
It was great, I mean, girls want to have fun is an all timer
You always have to wonder if She Bop. And Cyndi indeed Bops. What a great first album. It's rare for a new artist to go off like she did. Some great timeless classics and some fun bops in between. I like Time after Time better, but I like a little bit more upbeat tunes on my playlist, so Girls Just Want to Have Fun will make the playlist. Great album..
Solid album. Much fun. Time After Time is one of the greatest songs ever written.
A really terrific 80's pop album, not really a bad track on here. I'm giving it a 4 for now, but could go up on re-listen.
4/5 7 hits from one album seems like lightning in a bottle. She became an absolute icon with this album
Cyndis voice is one of a kind in the best of ways. Some songs from this album are classics that I listen to often and others don't have the same highs but the floor on this album is really high.
So much better than I expected. Starts off solid. Was never really a fan of Girls wanna have fun, but Time after time, She Bop and All through the night prop the album up to be a really really good album. I want to own this record. very close to a 5, but I am content to give it a 4
I cannot overstate the degree to which 12 year old me absorbed this album. I still love it and think it represents the epitome of great 80s pop: bouncy, synthy, with an undercurrent of darkness. And Lauper’s voice is a gift.
Girls Just Wanna, Time After Time, All Through The Night are standard fare. The rest of it was all better than I expected, and She Bop impressed me.
Really good. And complete, well-conceived, no moment wasted. An honest, assertive and fun voice.
Don't love live albums
When I was young I was turned off by Cindi Lauper - too much glam for my taste. At this point I don't mind the glam, and I can't deny that this album has two absolutely iconic songs: Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. The latter in particular is just an amazing song. Also, "All Through The Night" - great song. Those three are enough to elevate the album, and the rest is just fun.
This album largely rests on the shoulders of it's 4 singles. The rest of the album never quite reaching their height. Still Lauper's singular voice keeps the whole thing interesting at least.
Some real bangers! Also some others I would be happy to never hear again..
so fun!!!
Dope
Low 4 Best song: girls just want to have fun Definition of a 4. Hard to love because the voice is a bit gimmicky, but a fun listen all the same
Great album that I've never listened to all the way through. I thought I would lose interest by the time I got to the last few tracks, all of which have much much fewer listens on Spotify. Turns out those were some of the best tracks, including the ska track! I love hearing her punkish roots on this album, particularly on the last track.
I'd forgotten how many hits were on this album. That run from "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" through "All Through the Night" is amazing—the rest of the album can't help but pale in comparison, though "Money Changes Everything" is pretty great.
Fab!
82/100. She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper is an iconic record with an unmistakable energy and charm. I remember when multiple songs from this album were constantly playing on the radio, maybe even still today. The vibe is great, the singing is fantastic, and Lauper’s personality shines through every track. A timeless pop classic.
Not in love with the vocals, but I appreciate most everything else, nice musical tendencies high 3/low 4
As a nine-year-old boy when this was released, I thought I wasn’t supposed to like “girl music,“ so I never gave Lauper much thought. With the wisdom of age and experience I have truly come to appreciate her unique style and vocal range.
A true classic, drenched in catchy melodies and hooks.
lots of fun and amazing bops on here!! love cyndi lauper i need to listen to her more
Historically I’ve kind of dismissed Lauper for being too…I don’t know what. Too 80s? Too nasally? Whatever it was, it was foolish of me. This album stands out in a big way from much of 80s pop. Lauper’s voice and tone don’t scream “pop star” the way you might assume. Her approach to these songs is pretty unique, and even outside the hits, quite a few tracks have hooks 4 stars here, if only for Time After Time.
A lot of her best songs and the rest isn't bad either. 4 stars or B+.
Doidinho este disco. OMG SHES SO UNUSUAL!! Só conhecia o maior hit dela e nada mais, não fazia idéia do que esperar daqui. Me impressionou medianamente. Eu gosto muito da voz dela. É um gosto adquirido, certamente, e é fácil se irritar com seu tom. A produção do disco é aquele new wave bem pastelão dos anos 80. E nesses casos, você vai o odiar, certamente. She Bop foi uma ótima descoberta, gostei bastante. Um bom disco mas, se for pra ouvir Pop New Wave consigo pensar em dezenas de exemplos que preferiria ouvir invés disso. Mas nada mal! 4/5
It's impressive to write one timeless song, but to have two on the same album is so god damn impressive. Cyndi is the epitome of 80's fun, vibrant, bold, and full of energy. 4/5
Wow, massive pop hits. I really like the Prince cover.
Too fun, too cool. "He's So Unusual" is a fun, surprise interlude. Love that "Time After Time" and "GJWHF" came from the same album. Both legends of the era but both totally different feels and purposes to my ears.
liked it, one of those where i'm like, "oh, i've heard half of this before, wow!"
I really like 4/5ths of this album!
The subtitle of the 30th anniversary reissue is a great summary of this album: a celebration. This is smart, fun, sometimes-cheesy, early-eighties music. I think it holds up, but I'd be curious to know if someone who wasn't around back when it first came out would agree.
Banger
surprisingly good
Quintessential early 80s; synth heavy, quirky and hell of a distinctive voice. New wave pop, interesting lyrically and musical. Never heard the whole album before today, was maybe expecting it to be too much Cindy L, but fun ride. 4 Star
Banger, fun album. Time after time is an all time and girls just wanna have fun is a genre defining track. The rest of the album is super fun, produced well, and way more enjoyable than I thought it would be going in blind. I’m glad it’s more of what I like from the hits and not just two islands of good songs. I did not like all through the night though.
Girls just wanna have fun and time after time made it on tu repeat playlist
Finally, an album by a woman...AND it's one by a childhood heroine of mine. Half of these songs are absolute classics, and the other half are fully respectable.
time after time alone puts this in the upper tier, we have quite literally NO choice but to stan
OMG finally something FUN AND CUTE
I really liked it. I listened to a few bangers I haven't heard in a while and literally thought for a second, that Cyndi voiced Betty Bop haha. It's not 100% my music taste, but approx. 90% haha so 4/5 stars for me on this one. Very objectively it would be 5/5 of course.
This is such a perfect pop album, and Cyndi Lauper should have been bigger than she was. I love the quirkiness of her voice and this album is fun, and light. There are some classics and some bangers. It’s such a great album.
Cyndi Lauper isn't really my thing, but I've gotta give credit where credit is due. Having multiple singles from your debut album still widely recognized 40 years later is pretty impressive. "She Bop" was a fun, tongue-in-cheek song I hadn't heard before, and I appreciated the humor. Also, it took some guts to come out swinging in the early '80s with a Prince cover, but she pulled it off. Even if Lauper's style doesn't fully click with me, the impact and staying power of this album are undeniable.
Great
Gurls
this was a hoot.
Pre-listen: She's really fun on her super famous tracks. I like them, even if they are often a bit empty. Excited to try out a full album! She doesn't write much of this. I don't really know if that's necessarily a full-scale dig, but it is noteworthy Listening notes: -Money Changes Everything: She really let's her vocals go crazy here. I like it! On the other hand, the "I'm rich so now my social life is hard" song is overdone IMO. -Girls Just Wanna Have Fun: on some level this feels a little vapid, but on further reflection, I think this is BOTH fun AND a nice little (in the sense that its a pop track that's not trying to do that much) statement about independence. And it really is so incredibly catchy its amazing. -Time After Time: This album has not one but two unforgettable pop bangers. It really is just a wonderful slow love song. Earnest simple love song is one of the most basic song premises and it will always be underrated (because no matter how highly rated, love in all its forms is always underrated. Okay I'll stop being sappy/earnest now). -She Bop: a lot of interesting stuff going on on the electronic instrumentation side here. -Witness has a neat ska-inflected(?) rhythm. Namely just it has these off beat chops. -She definitely starts playing around a lot more on the back half of the the album, which is hit or miss for me (Witness and She Bop work), but on "He's so Unusual" and "Yeah Yeah" , I find it a bit annoying. So I think we land at three kinds of songs: anthemic 80s bangers (the two super-famous ones, Money Changes Everything), weird hit-or-miss experimental stuff (mostly on the back half) Review: I feel I kinda have to dock the album for having relatively little writing credits for Lauper (Elvis didn't get 5 stars either), but as pure unapologetic pop goes, this is pretty solid. Lauper does truly impressive and creative things with her voice. While she can do straightforward pretty vocals, her vocals often do this sliding into pitch thing (starting from below) that I typically associate more Soul. Anyway, it's neat. The instrumentation, which can be pretty generic in the 80s (and even here often is, especially on the leading tracks), is broadly varied, with some fun experimentation on the back half (though some of it is irritating) 3.75. I hate how much I give 4 stars, but this is supposed to be a lot of very influential albums and they were usually influential for a reason.
I think there are a few more sleeper bangers than the Madonna album we had a week or so ago, but there are still a few skips on this record that are just off (e.g., "I'll Kiss You"). With that said, it is a more interesting and coherent take on feminist pop in the 80s as it tries to grapple with negative tropes that makes it seem like Cyndi is the real Material Girl.
so many bangers on that album, but the ones left i did not like that much
A few big radio hits and a Prince cover. Don't love her super high voice
The first half of this is so packed with bangers, the second half really doesn't have a chance of keeping up the pace.
Ja, gefällt. Viele gute Songs und irgendwie haben sie die Zeit überdauert.
cyndi’s just a girl giving upbeat and unusual
Awwwrsome 80s.
Classic. The first half of the album is strong. Second half is a forgettable.
Talk about stand out albums of the 80s ! The iconic Cyndi Lauder, arguably one of the most important figures for Women in Rock and Roll. Not just known for her iconic look, her vocal range is nothing to shake a stick at. Money Changes Everything starts this album off with a bang, Cyndi's incredible vocals backed by banging electric guitar, keys and sharp drumbeat. Moving Swiftly on Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, talk about an 80s banger, it's the perfect mixture of powerful guitar, keys and synth, all backing Cyndi's popping vocals. The album very much continues in this fashion and doesn't let up on it's quality. Iconic album, iconic woman, this can't be any lower than a 4 for me as the impact it made for women in the rock n roll/pop genre is still felt today, what a woman. 4.1/5 MTW If you close your eyes listening to half the tracks on this record you're either in a bedroom covered in posters and bright colours in 1980s America, or you're a character in an 80s movie in a convertible. This is a real pop time-capsule. I'd never listened to a Cyndi record in my life before this. She's always been one of those singles girlies who I'd never even consider would have a coherent and important album (I also overall have very little faith in most music from the 80s - but I do like Cyndi). The first time I saw her I didn't even know she was in the music industry - to me she was Wendi Richter's manager at the first Wrestlemania. I then saw the video to arguably her most famous tune (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) and her dad was played by Captain Lou Albano, a frankly insane wrestling manager who used to wear elastic bands through holes in his face and ears and connected the dots. While the aformentioned 'Girls' and the equally memorable single 'Time After Time' are probably the general consensus stand-out tracks on She's So Unusual, 'All Through the Night' is my banger. If I were born in 1970s New York I'd be wearing my prom king crown slow dancing to this tune with the prom queen before I played a game of shit american football the next day or something. There's some weird shit on here because after all - she IS unusual. I'd be very happy if I never heard 'I'll Kiss You' or 'He's So Unusual' ever again. But aside from that - iconic pop. Important figure. Fantastic Cyndi Lauper. 3.4/5 JF
This is good stuff. The baby doll voices are a little off-putting but holy shit does she have pipes. It gives me super Tom Petty vibes somehow. Like, she listened to a lot the Heartbreaker's and brought a synth to the party. That's high praise.
Very familiar to me, but have not listened to the album before. Blind album. Thoroughly enjoyed the style, but totally see why the big hits are hits.
4.5
First thing "ALL Through The Night" is my absolute favorite Cyndi Lauper songs and possibly even one of my top 25 to 50 songs of the '80s I just love that track. I love the emotion in her delivery and I love the keyboard stabs in the place of the solo where I would usually want a guitar solo but those stabs just increase the agony of the lyrics. I have no problem with this album pretty much all the way through even after the hits run out on the album I think it's still stands as solid album tracks even though they are not obvious single tracks. "Witness" has a very early Police influence to it, and i got to admit Lauper covering Betty Boop is kind of the cherry on top. 9.6 ★★★★½
At times pop perfection. 4 stars
I've actually never heard this before, despite knowing all the singles from when I was a kid. I think the first six songs are all great here, and up through "All Through The Night", I was pretty sure I stumbled upon a 5-star classic here. "Money Changes Everything" is a cool opener. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "When You Were Mine" are a pair of cool covers that take on new meaning when sung from the opposite gender. "Time After Time" and "All Through The Night" are essential 80s ballads. And "She Bop" is the most fun song about masturbation ever. However, the album feels like they ran out of ideas after that. The last batch of songs are as inessential as the rest of the album is essential. Still, I can't deny how good the first 60% of the album is. The standouts for me are "Money Changes Everything", "Time After Time", and "All Through the Night". 4.5 stars.
All through the night to taki piękny kawałek. Sama płyta trochę nierówna, ale ma wystarczająco dużo hitów aby to wszystko wyciągnąć w górę. Sama Cindy ma kojący głos i prezencję prawdziwych gwiazd rocka. Czego chcieć więcej? 7/10
I can't believe this is Cyndi Lauper's debut album. She shows up on day 1 with all of the punky panache that we recognize her for today. This is the part of the 80s I love. Cyndi > Madonna, forever and ever and ever. I had a great time with this record. Time after Time is one of my all-time favorite songs, and Girls Just Want to Have Fun deserves all of its acclaim (and is on the short list of songs you recognize from the first note played), but I also really enjoyed the opening song and When You Were Mine (an inspired Prince cover). That being said, I didn't click as much with the second half of the album, so I'm sticking with a 4.
I’m shocked to know this was her debut! Not many albums have I heard the songs all before. It’s fun to know them as singles and then see them on one album that just rocked. I have fond memories of my dad introducing Cyndi Lauper by dancing around the house listening to Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Some real classics in here, amazing for a debut. Beyond those, her voice is just not my favorite
I think I’ve mostly listened to the Cyndi Lauper singles and this album was a great reminder that she’s more than those songs. Love the synth pop sound and love the 80s vibes. Also, Money Changes Everything was the perfect theme for Money Monday.
The highs are high, but the lows are.. mediocre on this one. Had never listened to this before but it's clear she's influenced many artists I love today (Carly Rae!). But I thought the album was inconsistent. Maybe it needs more listens.
Not bad. I expected something different but I was pleasantly surprised.
Some real bangers in this debut album. I was pleasantly surprised: it's fun, 80s listening. I'm glad that Lou Albano got it together for Cyndi. Best tracks: "Time After Time," "All Through the Night"
--Money Changes Everything...good opener. great voice -- Girls Just...her voice cuts straight through. delightful --When You Were Mine...not one of Prince's best. Definitely not good enough to justify the 5 minute length --Time After Time...classic --She Bop...it's groovy. That's all I'm going to say --All Through the Night...I like this one a lot. Ridiculous synths but they somehow still work. Her voice continues to power through --Witness...a surprising but fun left turn --I'll Kiss You...appreciate the swing but not a great track --He's so Unusual... --Yeah Yeah...weird and fun
I wasn’t expecting to like it but it’s great!
Was expecting pop nonsense, got served with cool punk goodness.
This album is so 80s, after listening to it I had a mullet and started referring to my car as “The Ride” while blasting it on cassette. I put Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time on a mixtape I named my "Rad Mix". I don’t remember buying roller skates, but I woke up wearing them, craving Tab, and emotionally invested in a John Hughes love triangle.
1. Girls Just Want To Have Fun 2. Money Changes Everything 3. Time After Time
Loved money changes everything
3,75
Time After Time is a fuckin' megahit and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. This album probably woulda ruined my life if I were 15 in 1983. It sounds great! The energy goes on and on! But it's still an artifact of the 80s, for better (mostly better) or worse. Decent variety, creativity, all that fun stuff. I don't love Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but it sounds good within the album. It's nice that they let theater kids out of their cages during the day in the 80s. World was more interesting for it. Probably a 3 but bumping it up to a 4 for the fact that if my daughters get into this kind of thing I'll be proud.
Un gran disco de pop, le pasa el trapo a Madonna en todo aspecto.
I’d like to make it 3.5, but I don’t know how.
4.0 - Very Good
One of the most 80s pop that ever was. I prefer her than Madonna
Wow! What a great album! The production on these songs are so infectious, there's a reason why Cyndi Lauper got so famous. 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' must surely to God be in the 'pop' canon. The guitars are so good on that song. 'Money Changes Everything' is alright, and it's probably my least favourite version of 'When You Were Mine' (after The Flatmates' cover and the Prince original) but it's still a great version of a Prince song, so still better than almost any other song. 'Time After Time' has probably always been my favourite Cyndi Lauper song, and I still really enjoyed it here. What a banger of an A side! B-side fades a bit for me; 'She Bop' is very good but I don't think I'd ever really listen to it on its own. Wasn't a massive fan of 'All Thought The Night' and I couldn't really tell you what 'Yeah Yeah' sounded like. But loved the 2-Tone era ska of 'Witness' and the Cure-like 'I'll Kiss You' was a great surprise. I really don't think it's a 5/5 but it's the closest it's going to get for me.
some 80s music is good
A classic album, love Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time.
Good album, crazy amount of hits. Solid pop tunes
Essential 80’s album.
Much stronger album than I was anticipating. Forgot how many great songs were on this album
The thing I like about this 1001 albums generator isn't just the obscure stuff, its not the stuff outside your regular rotation... it's the super popular acts like Cyndi that digital streaming means you usually overlook the catalogue on for those hits. This came out the year I was born and Time After Time is one of my favourite songs, it was good to play the whole album start to finish. Other highlights were
You'd have to been living under a rock to not know Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and/or Time After Time. Cyndi's voice isn't really my cup of tea, but this is such a fun album. The synthpop really hits, and I found myself enjoying the listen from beginning to end. Unreal that 5 songs on this album hit the Top 5. What a massive achievement.
This album is one hundred percent authentic to who she is. She did what she wanted to do. It’s completely unique even if the production isn’t the most original. Not every song slaps, but every song is definitely good and the album definitely deserves a listen. I enjoyed. 4/5
addictive! Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one but girls they wanna have fun
# Album Name: She's So Unusual # Artist: Cyndi Lauper # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Great album. A high 4/5 for me. It could go further the more i listen to it. Time will tell. I just love the feel. The 80's are oozing out of my headphones on this one. The synth, the sounds, awesome. Strong first half to the album. Quality drops after she bops. # Top Tunes: Girls just wanna have fun / time after time / money changes everything / kiss you / she bop / money changes everything # Would I listen to it again? Definitely
Cyndi Lauper's first solo album was just as I anticipated it would be, and I mean that in the most positive way. Full of energy, She's So Unusual was delightful and fun. Her two biggest hits are on this album, a remarkable feat, but the rest of the album held its own. Her vocal range was particularly evident in "When You Were Mine," which is an excellent Prince deep cut, but vocally Lauper went further than Prince (hard to do). Her voice is so emotive and captivating. I can't say I love her version more than Prince's, but they are definitely on a level playing field.
Obviously Cyndi Lauper has some huge, timeless poppy new wave songs that have stood the test of time. I had never really heard an entire Lauper album, though, and wasn't sure if the rest of her music would hold up. Well, I was actually really impressed with this album. It had the same quirkiness and energy that Lauper is known for. I feel like what separates her from a lot of new wave artists is that she doesn't take herself too seriously -- the girl just wants to have fun. ;) Honestly, this album was a surprise smash hit with me. I'm grateful for her keeping it fun with her artsy, off-kilter approach. She's so unusual, indeed, and in the best way.
I liked this a lot. I can see her voice is love it or hate it, but I honestly love it. I think I’d listen to the big songs again, but probably not the entire album. Overall: 4/5
I'm not a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper, but this was a really good listen. The music was well-written, well-performed, and well-recorded. All around a surprisingly fun time and I was genuinely sad when it ended. Four stars.
This had it all, great instrumental breadth, energy, girl power. I love the 80s synth stuff and there is some great songwriting credentials here too. The singles are really impressive leading the album and the rest is consistent.
c: time after time h: girls just want to have fun
Underrated queen
A surprisingly fun little slice of place-and-time delight. Pretty much every track is listenable when you'd think it would be as "two/three hits and lots of filler as any album going.
Fun 80s album with a lot of energy
very fun! some production sounded similair but girls just wanna have some is such a classic. plus the betty boop inspiration of ‘he’s so unusual’ is unique and the transition to ‘yeah yeah’ was crazy. pure 80s’
I had a lot of fun listening to this. Can't find many flaw.
After girls just wanna have fun, it's actually pretty good.
Reminds me of my childhood. Couple of great bangers on this album.
She had a moment
This is good in a '80s cheesy pop way.
This is perfect 80's synth pop. I don't know how you can't jump out of your seat and dance to this. It's so fun and emblematic of the time and an easy listen. Loved this one
Wacky and weird 80s music, so fun to listen to, Cyndi’s voice is so unique, some definite 10/10s on the album, and nothing that was bad. Mid to high 4
never heard this outside the two major hits, When You Were Mine ended up being my favorite track. pleasantly surprised
Solid Album. 7/10 so I'm going 4/5. Some real 80s bangers, great singing and creativity, and overall lively.
After the first couple of listens I was ready to give this a low 2* rating. I was struggling to enjoy this, an album seemingly full of filler tracks. But now, a few days later, I see how much joy there is here. Even Yeah Yeah (which according to spotify is the least played of the real songs on the album) is a really fun number. All the songs have great tunes. They are all true "bumper sticker" songs, with a single message, a single theme. It's the Changing Rooms of pop, with Cindy Lauper as Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen painting each song a gaudy colour and making us smile and say "wow! imagine your own house being like that!", as we recline on our beige sofa in our magnolia sitting room. So perhaps this just shows how fickle I am, and how stochastic this whole rating process can be. The time of day or year can have a huge effect on the scores, and in this case this album was saved by me having the time to give it a couple more listens.
Pretty good, like very similar to the Madonna album but more rock.
Fire album with iconic songs. Literally peak.
Great pop album. Her voice can get a little much at times, but other than that this is a fantastic listen.
We Think We Know What We're Doing, That Don't Mean A Thing 1001 Albums Generator 38 (05/26/2025) She's So Unusual is the debut album by 80's pop diva Cyndi Lauper. Ironically, in spite of the name of this album, a huge percentage of discourse revolving around Lauper is comparing her to fellow popstar, Madonna. I have been guilty of this myself as someone who was not very familiar with Lauper outside of her two biggest hits, Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time. I was surprised to see that both of these tracks are present on her debut album, which certainly means that she started her career off strong. I was also shocked at how much New Wave was present on this album, as I do not associate this genre with Cyndi Lauper of all people, but this is undeniably a new wave album. As a pop album from the 80's, it could be either pop perfection or a total cheese-fest. Which way, Ms. Lauper? Let's start with the two biggest hits from this album, both of which are sitting at over 1 billion plays on Spotify, which is fucking wild. The first of these, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, is a total classic. Originally written in the late 70's by Robert Hazard, Lauper took it and changed some lyrics to be from a female perspective and made it her breakthrough song. I especially love the silly popping synth that comes in after the first chorus. Also, this song has like 5 different hooks that will all get stuck in your head. The other huge single from this album is the ballad Time After Time. Very different from the rest of the album, this song is a slow piece of adult contemporary that manages to still be memorable, beautiful, and sweet. One of the many moments of genius on this album is when the first pre-chorus fakes you out and goes straight to the second verse instead of the chorus. Honestly, it's somewhat surprising that Time After Time became as big as it was. Not because it's a bad song, far from it, but rather because it is so different from the rest of this album. This is a pop rock album first and foremost, and no song shows this better than the opener Money Changes Everything. From that open kick snare that starts the whole album, you can tell that She's So Unusual is going to be fun. That synth that plays in the intro and throughout the song was stuck in my head all day. There's also a melodica solo, which isn't something you can say about a lot of pop songs and Lauper's vocals in the outro are powerful and epic. She can really belt with the best of them. Meanwhile, All Through The Night reminds me of some stuff off of Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory's album from earlier this year, just four decades earlier. Somehow, Cyndi Lauper crafted an album that is both squarely in its time and ahead of its time. The only real issue I have with this album is that the second half can't hold a candle to the truly perfect first half. The ending of this album isn't even bad, but some songs, such as the reggae-inspired Witness, are not my favorite. He's So Unusual is a pretty unnecessary tin pan alley interlude that leads kind of awkwardly into the fun, but slightly forgettable, Yeah Yeah, which ends the album with less energy than it started with. Again, this last run isn't even bad per say, and if it was some underground new wave EP, it would probably be regarded much higher than it is, but as the second half to an album that starts off so strongly, it's impossible to not compare. She's So Unusual is nearly as close as you can get to pop perfection. Cyndi Lauper is a convincing, talented frontwoman, and she has a great collection of musicians and producers around her helping to elevate these songs even higher. While it loses a little bit of steam at the end, there aren't really any songs that I would call "bad". 4.5/5, rounded down to a 4. Favs: Money Changes Everything Girls Just Want To Have Fun Time After Time Least Fav: Witness
I didn't really know anything about Cyndi, but this album is a bit of a powerhouse. I really enjoyed it altogether, but some songs in the middle fell flat
Ok...first off, I'm a huge fan of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and have been caught in many a questionable moment with the top down and it blasting (car and\or girl). She's so Unusual is a perfect album...cause she is and it's great. Having this as her debut after a breakup with a band that flopped is more testament to Cyndi's worth. It's not that this album is epic but it is just...well, fun. Weird Al and INOJ got some classic tracks with great ones in tribute. I agree with the list hat this is a must...3.65 stars baby "Yeah Yeah."
I never realized how big Cyndi Lauper's debut was. After listening to She's So Unusual I can see why. This album nails it nearly every step of the way. Quality vocals as expected from Cyndi accompanied by some really fun synth/pop tracks pretty much front to back. While I only previously knew Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time (both of which I love) I enjoyed every other track for one reason or another. Not sure there's anything I can really fault this album for, including the fun Betty Boop interlude, as it was admittedly a very enjoyable experience for my fresh ears. I've always known Cyndi was an icon but I'm too young and don't have the exposure to know why. She's So Unusual is quality album pretty much from front to back so I can see why this would have taken the world by storm in '83. Props to Cyndi on this release. Wondering if she ever did anything else close to this level for the remainder of her career. 3.82 stars
Ja! Deze was top en zorgt ervoor dat ik meer van Cyndi Lauper wil horen!
Super fun album; pure 80s awesomeness. I didn’t realize virtually all of her hits were from this one album.
Such a gem that helped define the 80s sound. All Through the Night is sort of a forgotten hit because it is overshadowed by Girls Hust Wanna Have Fun.
This is so 80s, and I like it. I'm a '90s kid, but I remember my mom playing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" every time she would clean the house. It's her favorite song even to this day. It's a pretty good album.
Cyndi Lauper was always a bit of a mystery to me. She’s had a successful career by most metrics. But to come right out of the gate into a solo career with an album with this much bombastic confidence; pumping out multiple timeless hit singles only to then see a steady decline afterwards, despite some quality works along the way, is just baffling. Maybe she just never got out of that alternative image she was famously attached to. Or maybe she just didn’t capitalise on her debut quick enough. I don’t know. ‘She’s So Unusual’ is a fine pop album. It’s fun. The songs are incredibly catchy and showcase Lauper’s insanely great vocals in almost every way you possibly could over production that feels very 80’s, yet still holds up decades later. It’s pretty much banger after banger. Love songs, feminist anthems, with a tight length that makes it an easily digestible album. Definitely a highlight of the 80’s that’s worth a listen to any fan of pop music.
Fun! Bangers
Yoooo the note she hits on When You Were Mine Some of the most iconic songs of all time. Slay Cyndi slay
I'm definitely having fun
She got bangers
Some really great songs on here.
Znam da je album pun veeeelikih hitova ali money changes everything ❤️
"Girls just want to have fun" is great, of course! "Time after time" is decent. 4/5
80’s gal pal vibe. I can do her voice…at times. Very happy go lucky. I’m gonna give it to her though, she came in and dominated in her own special way.
Fun pop music from the 1980s, and there is nothing unusual about this album. Favorite Track: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".
This record is legitimately great. I clearly already knew and loved the hits, the everything here is solid, and I was surprised to find that Cyndi's voice is very reminiscent of Kate Bush (my favourite ever artist) in place, especially in tracks like When You Were Mine. Favourite tracks: Money Changes Everything, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, When You Were Mine, Time After Time, Witness (which I kept mishearing as 'I don't wanna be a wet nurse. Lolz).
Girls just wanna have fun is such a bop.
Not at all what I was expecting - this album turned out to be an absolute riot!
I want my goddamn MTV. I don't care how oversaturated Girls Just Wanna Have is you bet yer bottom I'm shouting the lyrics in the car. There aren’t misses on this album just songs you don’t dance as hard to. This album is a blast. 1001 Album Listeners Just Want to Have Fun.
Pop greatness
Turns out she’s sort of hot
One helluva debut album that basically epitomizes the sound of the 80s. The two big hits from here you’ve heard countless times, but Lauper’s vocal range takes over on the rest of the album.
It took a long time to fall in love with this album. Time after Time (track 4) picked me up a bit, and then All Through the Night (track 6) put me over the top. Wow! I had no idea I was a Cyndi Lauper fan.
Got off to a good start - Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time are bangers - bur side two wasn’t great and brings this down to a 4 overall
Fair play Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time. Huge tooons. They secure the four. Simpsons: Yes
The songwriting is pretty decent, and Cyndi is a powerful and authentic vocalist. I like this album, but goddamn the 1980s electronic drums get monotonous. The arrangements are mediocre at best. Still within the constraints of 80s production the songs still shine through. Even the non-single cuts are high quality- unlike a lot of 80s albums, I was able to listen all the way through. Even the B-side is quite good- a fast paced almost rocker. (remixes on the 30th anniversary edition were dreck; the demos superfluous- but this doesn't count against the original album)
Tough 4. The bangers she has on this hard carry the album. Everything else is just way too out there for me. Fun instrumentals overall though! 'Time After Time' is my fave!
Not a ride I wish to experience again but one I’m glad I got to take.
Once again I’m taken by surprise, but this time it’s from an 80s pop album. The first six tracks are excellent and well crafted pop songs. The album dips in quality for the last four tracks, but the first six make up for it in a way. 7/10
i’ve avoided this record since adolescence mostly based on the album art. she’s so unusual. she’s so random. look how interesting. no shoes wow. what wild hair. i’m also not drawn to pop. we've all heard “girls” and “time after time”, but i've avoided the rest. but now i’m grading essays while this bops along, and i'm enjoying it more than i thought i would. my wife told me she bop is about female masturbation, which is chill. on my way home from work, i remembered i inherited this record from my mom, so my second listen is on wax. money changes everything is excellent. like a springsteen tunnel of love instrumental. when you were mine is also excellent. prince song, but she sounds like female elvis costello. or he sounds like male cyndi lauper. the hits are memorable and as is usually the case, made better in the context of the album. uh oh, i'm into it. all through the night. shimmering synth. quieter instrumental so you can hear her voice better. wicked synth solo with a nobel prize winning bass groove under it. i’m a changed man, cyndi. thank you generator. she’s great. i'm sold. agile and peppy and alternately cartoonishly fun, desperate and aching. dumb apples and oranges recency comparison: so far, this album is everything yesterday's cream album isn’t. self possessed, cohesive, actually fun. a reggae song. good groove. good synth(?)/bass line. not the best tune for her though? the elvis costello comparison comes to mind again, briefly. i’ll kiss you is good. betty boop joke song, k. kept it short. good. last track is fine. stronger start than finish. good album. broadened my 80s synth pop horizons. glad to own it on vinyl and throw it into the mix.
ganz gut paar banger sogar fav Girls Just wanna have fun least fav kp
Schon geil Liebling: When you were mine Schlechtester: He‘s so unusal (ist ne interlude aber die übrigen sind echt nicht kacke, wenn dann nervt mich time after time)
Classic 80's, enjoyed the flashback.
I forgot how good this album is. The first side is 4 legit hits. The second side is not as strong, but still engaging. The only miss in my opinion is ‘Witness’ followed by ‘I’ll Kiss You’
4/21/2025: bangers, great synths, surprisingly good guitar, just falls off a little at the end.
Pretty excellent piece of pop, all things considered. 1/3 timeless classics, 1/3 decent bops, and 1/3 duds. But the good is _so_ good that it gets 4/5
Really liked this album. There are quite a few very good tracks and it's honestly hard to believe this is a debut. Good stuff 4/5
Pure 80s in the best way possible
Goede bui
More hits than I thought. Love the Prince cover.
Loved it.
Fun, catchy album. My favorite songs are Time After Time and Witness.
There are two timeless pieces in this album fr, oh to be living in the 80s with hair up to the ceiling jamming to this! She kinda sounds whiny sometimes but alas, girls just wanna have fun
So many good songs. And a few bad.
Pretty incredible, particularly the run from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun > When You Were Mine > Time After Time. The quality drops a bit toward the end, but I strongly considered putting this in the 5 star clud.
Quintessential 80s pop - infectious energy
Loveee. !
I did not know she sang time after time
The singles are fantastic, but a lot of the rest is very samey?
The only thing surprising here is that I've totally forgotten some of these tracks existed. Even so, this is a great album. Not quite five stars as the non-single tracks aren't quite as good.
It would probably get the bog standard eighties synth-pop vote, except for Cyndi herself who absolutely elevates it just by doing summat a bit different with it all - wonderfully offbeat through the whole thing, and in surprised I haven't actually listened to this before
Kind of a weak second half but like when Girls Just Want to Have Fun is track 2 that's to be expected
This was a lot of fun, great tempo kept interesting. Girls wanna have fun and time after time are classics
This album freakin rocks. Such great power pop. I seriously enjoyed every song.
Nice nice
had 5 potential but there were some skips towards the end. I like the sound a lot
Lauper’s unique voice has an affecting mix of raw punk edge and emotional vulnerability and it gives her the ability to make a song almost anything she wants it to be. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun becomes a song of feminist empowerment; When You Were Mine addresses the continuum of human sexuality in a way which sounds unbelievably modern for 1983; and of course Time After Time is a haunting classic which she makes her own. Is it a pop record? Certainly. But she understands that pop is powerful when it’s well crafted - it can deliver a payload of meaning right where it’s needed and this album does exactly that. Pleasing fact: The musicians are mostly from Philadelphia band The Hooters.
Yeah went alright. This girl had fun listening to it
Наверное, в своё время это был культовый альбом, она вся такая хулиганистая девчонка на фоне остальных исполнительниц (хотя, вроде на тот момент уже появилась Мадонна (могу ошибаться)). Хиты узнаются сразу: Girls Just Wanna have Fun и Time To Time проигрывались в стольких фильмах и сериалах, что знаешь наизусть. И еще мне нравится обложка - её хочется разглядывать за деталями))
Guter Sound, manchmal geriet ich in Schwingungen :D
Certified Banger. Guter 80s Pop
wait this was good. i also didn’t realize how much of it i already knew. “money changes everything” got me weirdly verklempt right off the bat—there’s a melancholy earnestness under the silly surface that almost reminds me of pulp (???) in that it evokes this really strong emotional reaction in me more or less involuntarily. what’s up with that…? i LOVEEEEE “when you were mine” of course. the synths got a little too squeaky for me especially in the last couple songs but overall i just find her voice really engaging even when she’s being crazy. she sounds like a cartoon character! it’s fun! i’m having fun! fav tracks: when you were mine; money changes everything; she bop; girls just wanna have fun
Fun and upbeat, made me want to dance and bop my head along while listening. 8/10
Well I must be a girl, cause that was fun and I want it. Album cover: (A) f u n
This album is a banger, and I think everyone would agree. 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' and 'Time After Time' are incredible songs. Every other song could be terrible and I'd still give this album a good review. It was my first time hearing all of the other songs, and I would say I generally liked them. I liked 'She Bop' 'Witness' and 'Yeah Yeah' the most of those songs. By the end I was getting a little bored of the Cyndi Lauper sound, but I enjoyed the album a lot. 8/10
- was für Banger (und derbe guilty pleasure meinerseits) sind auf diesem Album bitte drauf? „girls just want to have fun“, „time after time“ und der Rest hat mir auch echt gut gefallen. Stimmige Platte irgendwie
Slaps!
About a month into my album journey, my Nana passed away, and my aunt who took care of my Nana for most of her life ended up giving me her CD collection when she moved out for a short while. A few of these albums were on this list. One of the first I got was R.E.M.'s Green. This will have been the second one. I put this background upfront because I found some sentimentality in Cyndi Lauper's debut. For sure, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a bop I heard before, but this was my first full-on connection to her music. It was nice hearing how charismatic and endearing Cyndi was at such a young age, and how the pop compositions surrounding her voice were tight and well-elevated. She could go toe-to-toe with Prince after how she covered his song "When You Were Mine". That said, the sound is very much locked into the synthesizer-drenched 80s style, which isn't unlike the Prince albums I've heard already. Though probably even more detrimental is that side one overpowers side two. While "She Bop" is a delight and there isn't a bad song in the second half, the album peaked in the front, particularly with the ballad "Time After Time" as one of the few songs to transcend the decade it came from. She's So Unusual is still a fun album backed by a strong and ferocious personality. Perhaps that's what my aunt gravitated towards when she got the album.
4.25
- The first four tracks are essentially perfect. Boisterous and energetic, but well-balanced by some solid emotion. ("Time After Time" is heavenly.) - Loses a bit of steam after that, though I applaud the inclusion of "She Bop." Unfortunately the last few songs just make me want to skip back to the beginning rather than drag myself through the rest. - Bonus point for the sheer amount of style ingrained in her performances.
"She's So Unusual" is just pure, unadulterated fun! It's like a burst of colorful, joyful energy. Cyndi Lauper's voice is so unique, and the whole album is just a classic slice of the '80s that still holds up. It makes you want to dance and sing along every time.
Bops! 4.
This album was completely unexpected. I assumed that it would have a few top-loaded, stand alone singles and the rest would be filler fluff. The reality is that She’s So Unusual plays better as a full album listen than just listening to the singles. I never was a huge Cyndi Lauper fan, and certainly never thought I’d be able to listen to an entire album of that voice of hers, but really, this was pretty damn good. I also really didn’t expect the vague Heartland vibe that a few of the songs contain. Really solid. 4.2/5
girls just wanna have fun!! what a fun album with mostly straight bangers from the top to the bottom, with beautiful synths and vocals all the way through!
After an underwhelming first track, the album opens up to be such a fun and iconic album. A lot of timeless hits (see what I did there) and other very energetic and quirky stuff which achieves exactly what she wants. Also that transition from He’s so Unusual to Yeah Yeah deserves all of the credit. Brilliant, fun album that everyone can enjoy, not just teenage girls from the 80s.
Last 4 of 6 have been female singer-songwriters. Glad they are well represented. I’m an 80’s kid and this album is a solid banger front to back as Punk meets New Wave. Glad for the re-listen. Felt like I was back in the 8th grade😂😂
Niet slecht, maar zou het ook niet dagelijks willen horen
Very good album. Second half held hostage to the outstanding first.
Great range
Actually enjoyed this way more than I anticipated. I had to get used to her vocals at first, but other than that, this is just a really enjoyable synth-poppy new wave album. Favourite tracks: Time After Time, Witness
This was actually a lot more strange and fun than i thought it would be!!! i had only heard girls just want to have fun and time after time before so what a pleasant surprise
I had no idea Cyndi Lauper ruled this hard
Let's be clear, the purpose of a eighties pop album is to deliver four - minimum - gold-plated singles. Which the first six tracks here more than delivers. So on the downslope you can do what you like, an essential cover or two, a forgettable album closer. Probably only Madonna delivered a better eighties female pop album than this.
Time after time is one of the greatest songs. Great 80’s pop album
Catchy, memorable, and just straight up fun to listen to. And sometimes, girls just wanna have fun.
The hits on this are great, the second half falters a bit. Bubbly and silly but also making clever plays on existing songs and their tropes. Essential 80's pop.
The 80s were sometimes cool when you had baddies like this running the show.
I've always liked individual Cyndi Lauper's songs, one by one, but I admit that this is a very good record! Me likes.
I liked this way more than I thought I would. Peak 80’s production.
I love Time After Time and it's on this album. I like All Through the Night a lot too. I just remember Girls Just want to Have Fun from this album and the video and how little I identified with how Cyndi Lauper looked. I don't even know if Girls just want to have fun is a good song! It's just like part of my growing up history. But Time after Time is so good.
DANCIN' DANCIN' DANCIN'
Boy, do I miss the 80s.... Cindy Lauper's debut is the quintessential Early-80s-pop-album. The music, synth- and guitar-laden, as is typical for the period, happily bubbles on, and the album opens with a number of very strong tracks - "Money Changes Everything", "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time" and especially "She Bop" are all extremely catchy as they are different, and all serve to show Lauper's talent. Side B opens with an equally stong "All Through the Night", but loses a bit of steam during the final couple of tracks. No matter - this album is a must listen for anyone even remotely interested in 80s music. 4/5
SHE BOP!
I like this song because the beat is good and I know now this song. The second song is not good because the beat is not that good I don't like this song she talks funny
Have you ever wanted to listen to music that Is making you happy and Is nice and catchy, Then this song is perfect for you. I like this song because it is very catchy. Another reason why I like this song is because I like the way her voice sounds with the music lyrics. I would recommend this song to someone else because I feel like even though it is an old song, I really feel like it sounds really good, and gives a feel of popular music now while having a bit of old in it too. I really like this album because I know a lot of the songs that are on this album and when I hear them I really like them. I would give this album a 5 stars.
Really like a 3.5-3.8, there's some great moments: Time After Time, She Bop. Overall very fun, lackadaisical album. Some weaker songs like I'll Kiss you and When You Were Mine.
Pretty iconic, but I didn’t finish the whole album
That sweet sound of 80s synth pop music. She was way more punk than Madonna - but Cyndi was just as much a Queen of Pop. An iconic female vocalist - one I can only dream of being able to sing a long with (those high notes are no joke!) Not the kind of record I'd sit and listen to front to back again, it kind of gets weird at the end...or maybe it's just that there's too many hits at the front of this one. When Cyndi comes on the radio, I'll never change it. I forgot what a jam "All Through The Night" is.
Some great tunes, but a bit front-loaded.
For the childhood memories ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Clearly an icon album with amazing artwork and some massive hits. Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time are iconic songs you can't not like. Standout Tracks (I hadn't heard before): - Yeah Yeah - I'll Kiss You
Cyndi Lauper can sing!! I don’t necessarily love her voice — but lady hits those notes, every time. This album so very creative & it showcases Lauper’s huge & diverse musical range — it could have been named “She’s so unusually talented” Also, the album made an important contribution to female empowerment in the 80’s through 90’s — not to mention its influence on the lgbtq movement. The album could also have been named “Everyone is so Unusual & Just Wants to Have Fun (show them respect)” This is a powerhouse compilation with some great songs. I’m not the target audience and, i prefer smoother vocal styles, so it’s not a desert island album for me. But this is creative transgressive and well executed pop music. Great album — much respect.
Really enjoyable pop album.
Good album
Helvíti töff synthapopp. Þetta var alveg stemmari.
Eitt af því besta í áttunni. Cindy Lauper frábær týpa.
some great singles on the album. But album is a bit one-dimensional
A strong “new wave” influenced album that is a “half bubble off plumb”. Quirky and accessible—Lauper draws you into her world. I really enjoyed the listen. “Time After Time” was my favorite.
Great early ‘80’s
Fun record and definitely a key representative for 80’s pop on this list. Ubiquitous, influential hits aside, Cyndi has a more than solid voice with quite a range to carry her young-lady-meets-grown-woman aesthetic. It bolsters the majority of this tracklist to relevance in the 21st Century and beyond.
Very 80s, very disco, sounds very Prince. Big fan. Favourite tracks: Time After Time, She Bop, I'll Kiss You, Yeah Yeah
Lauper wills a debut album made up mostly of covers of songs written by men into a record that established her as a powerful voice for the independence and nuance of womanhood in an era where women were asserting themselves more and more in all facets of society. In the hands of an artist lacking her confidence and vision, this approach would surely come off corny or pedestrian or just plain bad. Not being familiar with her catalog outside of the hits, it’s the lesser known tracks that really showcase her talent on this album — she tries on lots of musical styles, fitting them into her mold and approach, one that helped usher in a more electronic pop-rock style that dominated the rest of the 80s. She sounds comfortable on pure ballads, synthy pop tunes, pub rock anthems, and songs that draw influence from punk, ska, and the NYC dance scene. Her infectious energy merges all of these styles into a record that is fun and danceable nearly throughout. Musically speaking, I love the female-male harmonies featured on most of the tracks. The sequencing makes it an enjoyable record to listen all the way through, and oddball moments like the second to last track that serves as a coda interlude before the final track is lovely. And she successfully pulls off a great Prince cover — honestly her and Prince could’ve made some great music together especially given they were good friends, but he served more as a mentor in the music biz than a collaborator in her career. Her influence on so many contemporary artists I love is self-evident too. Her unique vocal delivery and punk sensibility surely influenced the wave of women-centric indie rock, synth pop, and dance punk from the early aughts on. It’s hard not to mention Madonna here. They’re both living in NYC at the time, and this debut record dropped a few months after Madonna’s eponymous debut. Lauper is the rock/synth pop/singer songwriter counterpart to Madonna’s Danceteria club girl disco fueled record. Before these debut records of theirs in 1983, Lauper was in a prolific cover band while Madonna was clubbing in Manhattan. Madonna’s influence was always purely aesthetic imo: she had an incredible personal style and curated powerhouse trend setters to guide her music stylistically her whole career, but her vocal talents, song writing, and musicality by comparison was lacking. Lauper’s strengths were much more musical: she sits squarely in the singer/songwriter category, and her vocal range and delivery is one of her greatest assets. Exploring and researching this record sparked a huge interest in the synth pop of the time that I’m really enjoying at the moment. I’ve listened to this record a bunch over the last few days, and I’ve come to really admire her music.
Great pop album. Includes hits likt Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. The vocal is a bit low in the mix on most tracks.
This is so fantastically '80s and also uniquely Cyndi Lauper. It's a fun and timeless album. There has been none other like Cyndi Lauper, and I can't imagine there ever will be.
A seminal 80's pop record. "She's So Unusual" is an apt name for this album, as Cyndi Lauper doesn't sound nor look like your typical 80's popstar. Not to mention the new wave presence heard all throughout the album. It's quite the impression to leave on your debut album, and it's very effective. "Time After Time" is one of the greatest 80's pop/love songs ever recorded and stands the test of time. The rest of the singles deliver as well and the only potential duds are found near the end of the album. Best tracks: Time After Time, She Bop, I'll Kiss You
Surprised me
For me, this album aged well. Or maybe it was just revisiting my teen years.
Definitely had this before but it’s a corker . Fun and very 80s 7/10
Mucho más que Time After Time
Huge impact on me, money changes everything, time after time, and When you were mine stick out. Such a classic
What a banging set of pop tunes.
Fun but some of the sounds (synths, laupers voice at times, and overall 80s production quality) were a little grating and some of the songs blended together. Girls just wanna have fun is one of the most well-deserving hits of all time. It hasn't left my head since and I still groove to it even though it's just playing in my mind. The 80s is one of if not my least favourite decade because of the sound of the time. But this was an exception.
4.5! Great tracks here.
A very nice 80s pop album.
I remember disliking Girls Just Wanna Have Fun came out because Cyndi Lauper seemed like a Madonna copycat, but she’s so much more than that. A solid 80s pop album.
“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is one of my all-time favorite songs. It makes me so happy. If you were somehow able to measure how much joy a song has given me per minute listened over the course of my lifetime, it might take the top spot. If I’m at a wedding and just took a bite of my steak dinner, and the DJ plays “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” I get up and dance for the next four minutes while my food gets cold. “Time After Time” is the other classic on this album. Beautiful song. And “All Through the Night” is a great pop tune too. The rest of the album leans toward new wave and it’s solid all around. Fantastic album cover. I could frame it and hang it up.
I always liked the song Girls Just Want To Have Fun. It was cool hearing it in its full context. Pretty cool albulm. Favorite Song: Girls Just Want To Have Fun Least Favorite Song: I’ll Kiss You
Great pop album!
Really fun album, surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Some really catchy songs on here
An inspiration!
I did not realize this album has all of these hits. Girls just want to have fun, time after time, she bop, all through the night.
I enjoyed this one. I perfect time capsule of early ‘80s pop. Oh and ‘Time After Time’ is a masterpiece
9/10. Loved this shit, almost perfect beside the last 2.
Bardzo przyjemny album. Primo - Lauper ma bardzo oryginalny głos. I robi z nim bardzo ciekawe rzeczy. Pod względem takiego bardzo dziwnego i niestandardowego wykorzystania głosu przypomina mi trochę Kate Bush (oczywiście to zupełnie inne style i style, ale taki vibe pokręconej laski mi się kojarzy; choć krótkimi momentami nawet podobne barwy mają). Secundo - jej piosenki są zróżnicowane. Cyniczne "Money Changes Everything", zadziorne "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", nostalgiczne i smutne "When You Were Mine", dosyć futurystyczne "She Bop" i "Witness", które uderza w ska.
Everything that the GoGo Sisters wanted to be. The PInnacle of Mall Pop. Still 4/5. Maybe i'm just not a huge fan of malls. Or Women.
Mocne 4. Różnorodne kawałki, dobre teksty, w ogóle sporo zabawy tekstem i formą.
Kanon muzyki rozrywkowej. Produkcja albumu, bogata w syntezatory, gitarowe riffy i nietuzinkowe aranżacje, idealnie wpasowuje się w estetykę lat 80., choć miejscami wydaje się nieco przestarzała. Płytka jest żywiołowa i pełna osobowości. Zupełnie odwrotnie od Go-Go's Słabe 4
Enjoyed it. Fun album with an almost old-school rap amount of skit flavor. Which is perfect. I love how unserious it is. Her voice is great and the music is fun.
I didn't think i would enjoy this as much as I did. That being said I preferred the first half of the album over the last couple songs. Still really good overall! Looking forward to any other Cyndi Lauper albums on this list
You go Cyndi! The girls just want to have fun. Great pop from a talented individual. Will listen again
fun, so many now-classics
Her voice is phenomenal. The production is horribly dated, but back then it sounded (temporarily) fresh. More than just the one or two hits, there are quite a few great songs here.
oh to be uma adolescente dos anos 80 ouvindo cyndi lauper me achando a mais badass de todas... álbum que encapsula bem essa ideia frenética dos anos 80 de um jeito bem girl power. gosto muito.
I really enjoyed listening to this, as a gen Z person who has only heard her biggest hits (both of which I would have struggled to attribute to her). This reminds me of no doubt (with less ska, I suppose), and I found myself getting really into it (taken out only by some questionable baby voices on the side of my ear)
This is #day109 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's to full-on 80s, right? Everything about this record is iconic, starting with the artwork, continuing with the new wave synth-pop-rock vibes, the production, and vocals. And let's not forget the mood it creates. While "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is the obvious hit, this album is packed with singles and outright classics, such as "Money Changes Everything," "She Bop," and many more, each shining a neon light on the era's spirit. A true snapshot of the 80s. This is another solid 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day110.
Another surprise. I had assumed I wouldn't enjoy this album. Thought it would be Girls Just Wanna Have Fun plus filler. How wrong I was. The opener is great. The sound is 80s but not completely cheesed out. I am impressed.
Groundbreaking and original.
Cyndi Lauper and Chappelle Roan are the same template
Chappell Roan for ‘80s kids (complimentary to Cyndi Lauper, discriminatory to Chappell Roan). I hope this review ages poorly, because while the many highs on She’s So Unusual hold up, its lows are…strange. And I think Midwest Princess has a similar problem, even if I also really like it 🫢🫢🫢
Once you get past the fact you've heard half of these songs a billion times, there's a lot of great songs here. They're catchy, well written, and fun. Definitely worth a listen.
Yet another album that I can't properly be relied on to rate fairly. I always liked Cyndi Lauper, still do. It is fun, sometimes even moving, not so 80's that it is dated, but nevertheless ICONIC as such. Actually she is a good example of the second kind of 80's music I tried explaining on a review here once. It is not "oh that is so 80,s it is 'stuck there'" She is 80's by name and fame but a lot of her music is rather more timeless and some of her songs, even on this very album, remain in my favorites list. This is worth listening too, even if it is just for fun.
a perfect five-star contender string of 6 tracks from the start, but the remaining 4 pulled it away synthy jams full of excitement and the unique and fun-wannahaving voice of cyndi lauper
Let there be pop!
Such a great album that I’ve never listened to the whole way through.
Really fun Really great She bop? She bop Easy 4
Despite the 80sness, this was actually really great. Loved her voice. Every song sounded like a single. Haven't finished the album yet but my favourites are Money Changes Everything, Girls just wanna have fun, and my favourite - She Bop
love these albums where the hits are the low points and the deep cuts are plentiful and impactful
Surprise 4/5! If you put the 80s production/sound to the side, this album has some great songs and the rest are good. They don't necessarily all sound the same either. A great pop album for the era!
4.4 - A lot of bangers and a lot of fun
Najdraže stvari su mi She Bop, ali ne zato što je oda masturbaciji (fan fact, tko još nije znao 😂), All Through The Night i When You Were Mine. Still, pošto pokušavam izolirati slučajeve, reći ću 4/5 ili 8/10.
Originalno Princeova, When You Were Mine mi je najdraza, skroz je super u njenoj izvedbi i bas mi odgovara njenom opusu. Witness mi isto ima bas zanimljivih instrumentalnih momenata, a zadnje tri stvari me nisu nazalost toliko osvojile. Svejedno, za prvi solo album imati 4 super uspjesna singla je ogromno postignuce. Album je jako krenuo pa mi u drugom dijelu malo gubi tu žar s pocetka ali generalno dosta kompaktan, tight album s glavom i repom.
