Reviews (page 2 of 14)
The album that started it all. No skips from me, and still stands out as some of Gorillaz best work.
This is one of the few purely 5 out of 5 albums for me. No 4.5, no 4.75… just 5 out of damn 5. There is not a bad track, or even mediocre track on this album. It is just an amazing experience from start to finish, and one of my favorite albums of all time
holy shit my favorite album of all time
An excellent album that brings me back to my art school days… with one skip. I can’t stand that shouting sample in M1 A1. But other than that, there’s a lot to love. I appreciate that Gorillaz has never been an overly serious project, but musicality and experimentation are still top priority. This isn’t my favorite of their albums but it’s still well worth coming back to whenever the mood strikes me.
One of the more creative acts that followed the turn of the Millennium, Gorillaz is both easy and hard to describe. The band "members" are characters illustrated by Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame. The musicians are that guy from Blur and an assortment of quality musicians and producers like the famed Del and Dan The Automator combination. 25+ years later, this album I think still is one of the better mainstream albums of the early 2000s. Go listen to this on shrooms while camping just after sunset. No squealing, remember that it's all in your head.
I first heard Clint Eastwood on this music on demand channel we had with the family cable package. Watched Clint Eastwood really - there were about ten music videos available on the entire thing, many of them were bad, but it was a fun little thing to do back before the internet made all this easy. My brother agreed it was weird and then we watched it again, and a few times more. Something about it stuck with me and I had to get the full CD. I didn’t and still don’t care about the whole cartoon band thing or any of the weird mythology of the project but man, I loved this CD. I remember being impressed by how different every song was but how they still all felt of a piece, all from the same band, and I loved the overall vibe of the album. A lot of songs (Punk, Double Bass, Starshine in particular) are evocative in a way I find hard to describe but they’re like aural mood pieces that I’d listen to multiple times, catching new little instrumental bits or things to like about them. Also man Del the Funky Homosapien is so good here. I was already getting into in rap around this time but Gorillaz pushed me to explore it further, grab whatever Limewire could find for me. I’m pleasantly surprised to discover the album holds up. Haven’t listened to it in its entirety in a while. There was a part of me worried about trying to separate the nostalgia from the actual music (not that I would bother, I am not here to be objective) but I like this as much as I did back then. Fantastic album, yet another high score that threatens to pull my average rating above a 3
Good one, liked almost every song:) like like like
Something more than just a music - Island's Vocaloid 5/5
It's so good! It's experimental but not in a way that makes you want to drop the album halfway through. On the contrary, it's the type that keeps you hooked. As a first time listen, you never know where it's going but it always surprises you on the best possible ways, it brings so many variations of genres and artists in such a cohesive way, truly a masterpiece. I don't know what happened with the clint eastwood remix, though.
This has actually jumped to my top Gorillaz album recently. Sure Demon Days, Plastic Beach, and the Mountain are much better cohesively, but I love the sketchbook quality of this one. It obviously matches the band members themselves. Also, an album doesn't have to be cohesive to be great. The White Album is up there for my favorite Beatles record. This one has the most triphop dub influence which I love. Re-Hash, Double Bass and all the big singles are still great. Damon Albarn is on my Mount Rushmore. I'd put his output from early Blur to Plastic Beach against anyone and there's still a lot of good outside of that. The Mountain really is just a quality album over 35 years into his career. 35th perfect album, 1054 albums in. Rating: 5.0
It is legendary and simply enjoyable
Top songs: Rock the House, 19-2000, 5/4 Bottom Songs: M1 A1, Dracula

Super vet
I'l start with negatives. It lacks cohesion. It doesn't sound like a single record, but like a compilation of cool songs, at least to me. It's too bass reliant and leans too much into disco-inspired repetitiveness. BUT What a cool debut album. Rough around some edges, sure, but with so many GREAT songs and moments. Clint Eastwood, Tomorrow comes today, Punk, Double bass, 19-2000. It's unique. It's intoxicating and I love that all sides of this record get refined and perfected over the following Gorillaz albums. They will go on perfecting the genre mix, giving and identities cohesion to their projects. Truly one of my favourite bands (or music projects) ever. What do you mean this is the only Gorillaz record here? What the hell? Where is Demon Days, Plastic Beach, The Now Now, Song Machine? Is this a joke? This jumps from a very strong 4 to a 5 just for being the only Gorillaz project in here. Give me one more Bob Dylan live album now, thanks.
Highlights: Re-Hash, 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today, New Genius, Clint Eastwood, Man Research, Sound Check, Double Bass, Rock the House, 19-2000, Latin Simone, Starshine, Slow Country, M1 A1 A great hip-hop experiment from Albarn. I kinda miss this style in his more recent records. His hip-hop morphed into more common alt pop. The culture around him also copied his breakthrough style, so it doesn't stand out as much anymore. But for its time, this is a very cool release. So full of that early 00s cool style and depression shit-talking on urban life. I really liked Del's features and wished that there were maybe even more of these alternative hip-hop features on here. Maybe De La before Demon Days? But of course, it's not all hip-hop, it's still pretty deep in his home turf of alt rock. I also love how this project was a multimedia effort with a visual identity, lore and so much content to dive into. These modern Gorillaz phases miss that magic. This really felt like a giant passion project with a sparkle in its eye - well, as much sparkle as something this depressive and drugged up can have.
me encanto
solid 4.5.
Excelente
Recordaba que era divertido. Qué interesante la flauta desafinada. Le da estilo.
I liked it a lot
Clint Eastwood's music video was the very first thing I saw when I turned the channel to MTV in 2001. Animated characters and worldbuilding with experimental filmmaking and animation changed my entire perception of what music was capable of, as a storytelling device.
This still works so well 25 years in. What could be super shticky works. The digital band is still fun, and they straddle the lines between electronic, hip hop, and indie rock. Gorillaz are very fun and it’s a great debut album
One of the most surprising albums ever
Great. Not Demon Days level of great, but still great.
Very enjoyable, lays a good base future Gorillaz albums have built off of
I am forever grateful to live in the same timeline as Gorillaz. I am forever grateful to Justine Frischmann to dumping Damon's ass, leaving the sad man to move into a flatshare with Jamie Hewlett and start discussing singing apes. I am forever grateful that Damon keeps pushing boundaries musically, giving platforms for talented musicians across the globe, and growing an extensive, varied back catalogue within, and I can't stress this enough, every single person on earth can find at least one song that they love. But mostly I'm just grateful to still be alive after the amount of pills I dropped the first time I saw Gorillaz. 9.5 / 10 Best track/s: 19-2000, New Genius, Clint Eastwood, M1A1, Man Research, 5/4 Better albums by Gorillaz: Demon Days, Plastic Beach
Goooooooooooooooooogle
This is amazing. The production on this album is stunning. It channels different vibes but still feels cohesive enough to not diverge from the main vibe.
Excellent mixture of diverse styles - performed by a virtual band.
Man, this album blew my mind when it came out in 2001. It's funky, fresh, and odd. This is the second best Gorillaz album behind the epic 'Demon Days.' There are bops, mellow tunes, and a frenetic first part. Damn if the future still isn't coming on. Top tracks: "Clint Eastwood," "Rock the House," "19-2000," "Re-Hash," "Tomorrow Comes Today," "5/4"
Decent 9 to strong 9
This is such a load-bearing album in my life that it’s impossible to be unbiased about it. It’s not just that it introduced me to the grab bag of different genres Damon experiments with here; Jamie’s visual work for the band has forever been a massive artistic inspiration for myself as well! All of it comes together into a special project that musically succeeds in most of its experimentations and sets a uniquely dark and grimy atmosphere that I’ve never quite seen replicated by anyone else -- not even by the band, which has reinvented itself numerous times over the years since. Nothing short of a classic! Standouts: 5/4 • Tomorrow Comes Today • New Genius (Brother) • Clint Eastwood • Sound Check (Gravity) • Double Bass • Rock the House • 19-2000 • Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) • Starshine • Slow Country • M1 A1 • Left Hand Suzuki Method
This is the album that finally made me appreciate and understand rap as an art form. I would be hard pressed to find another full work that had such an impact on the trajectory of my music listening. I could write a novel about this album. It's so fresh and even 10+ years after my first listen I still eagerly throw it on. I wish they would make another album built around samples like this. Really something special.
An old fave
Legendary hip-hop, alt rock fusion. "Rock the House" is spiritually a Deltron 3030 song.
This album hits hardest when it leans into rawness, groove, and controlled chaos—and that’s exactly where tracks like Punk, M1 A1, and New Genius (Brother) shine. They don’t feel overproduced or polished; they feel alive, like fragments of late-night ideas stitched together into something strangely cohesive. Clint Eastwood stands as the centerpiece—minimal, hypnotic, and effortlessly cool. The beat is simple, but that’s the strength: it leaves space for mood, letting Del the Funky Homosapien bring personality without breaking the detached atmosphere. It’s one of those tracks where less really becomes more. Then there’s 19-2000, which flips the tone completely—playful, bouncy, almost cartoonish. It shows how flexible Gorillaz are, moving from dark and hazy into something bright without losing identity. The production by Dan the Automator ties it all together with a dusty, lo-fi texture—hip-hop drums, dub influences, and rough edges that make the album feel intentionally unfinished. That imperfection is the aesthetic. Not every track lands; some feel more like sketches than full ideas. But that’s part of the charm. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about vibe, texture, and experimentation. Overall: a genre-blending, slightly chaotic debut that thrives on mood over structure. When it hits, it really hits.
Classic album! Very good my again not my type of music.
I can very clearly remember listening to this record when it first came out, and loving how weird and different and exciting it was. And then having Del on tracks was like a bonus prize.
Thunk thunk, who this its the genre destroyer
The coolest of pop albums. Musically it contains everything from Beck to the Specials to the Modern Lovers via hip hop, trip hop, dub reggae, garage rock…and much more. Despite the range of sounds, the dominant MO throughout is boomy heavy bass and sharp danceable percussion. The insanely catchy Clint Eastwood is the best known song but the Cuban-rhythmed and sung Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) towards the end is the biggest thrill on the album. This is pop music as Lingua Franca - lyrically and stylistically multi-lingual and multicultured. I got to know it through on-repeat listenings while driving my kids around in the car in the early 2000s. It strikes me now that with its moreish catchy tunes, wide range of sounds and genres, it probably had mind-broadening effects for lots of people, providing a gateway into styles of music and artists they weren’t previously familiar with.
Can't believe I missed this album. Never realized how many bangers are on this. Punk is by far my new favorite, but it is hard to pick. Not a fan of the remixes on the album.
that sunshine is really in the bag
I always thought Gorillaz fans were weird growing up. Still do but this project is far better than Blur.
How funny is it that the first album that comes up for this challenge is one that changed my perspective on art forever? I was 14 when I got into Gorillaz, and the self-titled stands out because this was still when Damon Albarn was trying to maintain some anonymity away from Blur. This also explains some of the musical limitations in the album itself, with lots of electronic and trip-hop influences in the songs. For the feelings behind the songs, Albarn and the other musicians behind the project stayed in-character for the Gorillaz crew. This was back when they were attempting to venture into multimedia with a book and tie-in movie that never came. It really sounds like a fully realized *cartoon* band making a soundtrack for a series that doesn't exist. I still love this band dearly, and all the musicians involved in their recent albums still make it special and unique in the modern industry (seriously, "The Mountain" kicks ass). Yet, the simplistic and almost desolate instrumentals behind this album give me a perfect sense of nostalgia for those rainy morning bus rides to school. Favorite track: Tomorrow Comes Today
When this came out, it was immediately catchy and borrowed right on in, yet sounded like nothing else. Listened to it so much that my toddler sang it before he could talk.
I admit to the fact that I am totally incapable of being objective on Gorillaz. Their self-titled debut album isn't the one I think any fan would pick for the list (that title would have to go to Demon Days or Plastic Beach) but as is often the case with music here from the late 90s/early 2000s, composed near where the original book was written, there's a (reasonable enough) lack of symmetry. Right out of the gate Gorillaz, as a project, is bleeding with cool. it's an interesting experiment: a dirty lab-grown supergroup of eternally-youthful rockstars eschewing the bubblegum-pop stylings of its MTV-era contemporaries and being unapologetically ugly-ish. Their influence on the proceeding generations is probably hard to chart, but it's certain that the landscape wouldn't be the same without it. This album isn't their most refined - that would come four years later with their groundbreakingly ubiquitous sophomore album Demon Days - but it's oozing with their signature confidence. While obviously not Damon Albarn's first foray into music, the more hip-hop inspired beats on this record are a breath of fresh air in an already impressive discography. Taking inspiration from Deltron, DJ Shadow, Portishead and other cool trip-hop artists of the era pays off in spades with a tracklist peppered with interesting hits. Admittedly, it's not always a winning formula - between timeless classics like the Omnichord-'inspired' Clint Eastwood and the cool-as-ice 19-2000 are enough forgettables to make this a clear runner-up in the Gorillaz discography. Its eclectic sources of inspiration are as much a blessing as an albatross around its neck: Spanish-speaking rap in Latin Simone works a treat, but the discount Fatboy Slim-esque opening track of 'Re-Hash' is like broiled broccoli. Gorillaz is an impressive melange of sound that barely works, yet hits like a camouflage Jeep when it does. That variety of style certainly gives it this weird temporal timelessness, like you can tell exactly what era it's produced in while also feeling fresh today. It's got that kind of je ne sais quoi that's missing from most of their post-Plastic Beach works, unfortunately, but it's refreshing to come back and hear where it all came from. Gorillaz is as much a project of visual aesthetic as much as its voice, which I think has given it a somewhat tarred reputation to purists. The cartoon stylings and (partially as a result of that) its popularity with the Zoomer generation has always been a point of insult. But it reminds me of that quote from Q Magazine: " He [Albarn] wasn't discouraged when Albarn's bete noire Liam Gallagher sneeringly dismissed Gorillaz as "fucking kids music". "I remember thinking, 'Yeah, it's for kids because those kids are going to be adults in 10 years' time, so let's give them something decent to inspire them." " As that kid at the time, it definitely inspired me. Fav tracks: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Latin Simone, Tomorrow Comes Today, M1 A1
yuhhhh
Fuck yeah, this is destiny, wore my gorillaz tshirt today
ke desirte que no te haya dicho antes 🥹🩷
Banger.
Amazing, just wonderful. Creative, super interesting sounds and arrangements, funky but never stupid and also being a bit stupid sometimes, i loved it. Particularly good Latin Simone and Rock the House
bangers, m1 a1 an underrated deep cut
DONT EVEN NEED TO listen to this album. It's engraved in my head, I have this on CD. #thebest
damen okay so funny I have just now been getting into the gorillaz, like slow cooking, but excited
este es el album de mi infancia
Huge Gorrilaz fan over here! The fact they created a virtual comic book band just to break away from the mold of the music industry. Allowing them to create something entirely different than what their fans or colleagues would have wanted. This album is loaded with nostalgia for me, with songs like Clint Eastwood being popular when one of my childhood friends first started smoking weed singing “Sunshine in a bag”. The line in sound check “Gravity will never let me down” sticks in my head often too. Overall I’ve listened to this album countless times and still enjoy it every time. It’s made it into my road trip music rotations. So chances are anyone who has sat in a car with me for many hours on a climbing trip has listened too. Callie was bopping along to it this morning and Ben tried to grow more skin while listening to a few of the first tracks.
Been waiting for this one. Gorillaz are a all time favorite of mine. So many hits on this one, 5/4, 19-2000, Clint Eastwood, Re-Hash, Tommorow comes today. Have always admired the lore abd the creativr direction from Jamie Hewlet, artist of the characters and creative director for the look of the art. Have always admired his style and get inspiration from an art book of his that I own! He draws this comic called Tank Girl which is super dope. Check it out, you will see parallels between the arts types of both separate projects. Id say Demon days, and Plastic beach are just as good as this one if not better (probably better imo). A few other favorites are The Now now and their brand new album The Mountain, all different flavours but all so good, so groovy, and so fresh. As you can probably tell, Ive listened through their discography haha and this album ranks near the top. (Top 5 of atleast) 9/10 for me, easy 5 star. Will always be a big fan of the stuff they put out.
Let's bo honest, this album has Clint Eastwood so of course (OF COURSE) it's already a 10/10 to me. Also I think that I love the musical fluity of this record so I don't care I'm gonna play favorites 10/10
So good
One of my favorites. It still blows me away with the wide range of genre this album goes through. It's definitely a trip!
I love that i have no clue what genre this is. I have never heard a more creative expression of music that never takes itself so seriously. Only one track I didn’t care and it is just because it wasn’t as creative as the rest, but still objectively good.
Incredible
Before I jump into this album, I need to note how big of a Gorillaz fan I am. I fell in love with the band around eight-ish years ago, and have listened to all of their albums front to back multiple times. As of listening to this album, The Mountain only came out two days ago, and I was listening to it earlier this morning (and love what I heard). Gorillaz's debut is a masterpiece, and I'm not even sure if it would land in my top three of their albums (D-Sides, Demon Days and Plastic Beach would likely take those spots). This album sounds nothing like any of their other work (besides G-Sides, obviously) and I always love listening to it, so I'm very excited to get into it here. This will be a long one. • Re-Hash kicks the album off with a great burst of energy. The simple guitar line works really well, and would be a staple of the guitar parts throughout the album. I love the layering on the vocals, with 2D's higher vocals and much lower, less energetic vocals underneath, as well as Noodle providing backup vocals. Off the bat, this song makes me forget all about the real people behind the music, and I can just imagine the fictional characters. • I love the polymeter in 5/4. The guitar and bass are in 5/8 (ironically) and the drums are just in 2/4 (and the vocals are in 4/4), until the chorus where every instrument comes together in 4/4. It never feels confusing at any point, and it gives the song such a unique feel. I also love how loud the bass gets in this song. • Tomorrow Comes Today is such a fun song. The first single released by the band, you immediately know the vibe of the band (at least for these early days). This song has the first use of the melodica that would become one of the most iconic parts of the band's sound, and the melody it plays is really great. I love the different layers of vocals in the chorus and post-chorus. • New Genious (Spotify has it spelled as Genius now?) is such a dingy sounding song. It's the first time 2D's falsetto really takes the lead in a song, and it's so emblematic of the early Gorillaz sound. Live versions that use the backing vocals for the chorus don't really capture the same vibe 2D's voice does in this recording. • And then we have Clint Eastwood. There's so much about this song that was never replicated. 2D sounds different on this song, and I love his voice here, I wish he sounded like this on a couple more tracks. Del's rap is perfect for the song, there's a reason it became the default, even after years of other performers putting their own spin on it. It's so energetic, he sounds like he's having fun recording it. And then the long outro after the last chorus is such a perfect ending. I love every version of this song, like Phi-Life Cypher's original version (which might even be better instrumentally) and De La Soul and Bootie Brown's Demon Days era take, but nothing compares to the album version. • Clapper is a really different song on the album. 2D's falsetto is back in force, and the chorus is one of the least conventionable parts of the album. • Punk is a great interlude track. As Damon Albarn said when performing it, it doesn't really have lyrics, so you can just sign whatever. Perfect for expelling any energy you have • Gravity might be one of my favourite songs on the album, as soon as it kicks in it becomes one of the catchiest songs on the tracklist. • Double Bass is awesome. Gorillaz have a few instrumentals across their discography, and while this isn't my favourite it does stand out from the rest. It's another song that couldn't have come from any other era of the band. • The second (and for a long time, final) Gorillaz song to have Del tha Funky Homosapien, Rock the House is another banger. Del's raps fit into the Gorillaz style so cleanly. It's a shame it took until Cracker Island for him to be on another of their songs. • 19-2000 is another contender for my favourite song from the album. It's so Gorillaz, with 2D and Noodle both taking lead vocals at parts. 2D's vocals are among the best on the album, and the instrumentation is really pleasant. • Latin Simone is such a unique song among Gorillaz's discography. If I remember right, they wouldn't feature another language this prominently until Tormenta with Bad Bunny, over 20 years later. I also really like the English version of the song, and the two versions compliment each other nicely. I wish the English version was on Spotify in my region, but the best option I have is to listen to the Gorillaz Radio and deal with Murdoc talking over the end. • Starshine was a song that took a couple of listens to click with me, but I really appreciate it now. I like the guitar/synth line and the bassline is great throughout the song. 2D's vocals are probably my least favourite on the album, but it's still a good song. • Slow Country is maybe the most underrated song on the album. I know some people find the wind effect throughout the song annoying, but it doesn't distract me too much. I absolutely love the chorus, and the main piano hook is so nice. • M1A1 is an insane closer to the album, because it feels like a perfect opener. Gorillaz seem to agree too, because almost every live performance in recent years (including when they played this album in full) has begun with this song. Ending the album with such a burst of energy is a great choice, and really leaves you wanting more. I've written a lot already, so I'll try keep the outro brief. I clearly love this album, and this band. Self-titled is a vibe Gorillaz only hit this one time, and it's truly unique. It's an album that I believe is 99% deserving of its place on this list, and the only thing stopping it from being at 100% is because Demon Days somehow isn't. No matter how much I love this album, Demon Days is on another level, both in terms of its impact and its quality, and it somehow being excluded from this list is criminal. I'm not sure how to pick a favourite song from this album, because there are so many absolutely perfect tracks on it. It feels almost arbitrary to pick, so while I'm going to give it to 19-2000, just know that it could've easily gone to so many others. I'm going to listen to G-Sides now and keep this train rolling. Favourite song: 19-2000
I know this album so well, I played it endlessly when it was released. Eclectic, varied, irrepressibly creative, and utterly deranged. Just wonderful.
Absolutely loved every second
Très bel album qui donne envie de découvrir Gorillaz
banger
Just a bop, just a fuckin buncha bops.
So bomb. Psychedelic beats but done in a way that feels fresh, hypnotic drum loops and suuuuuch good sampling. Easy 5.
I remember this not really being my favorite but it really hit this time. I think listening through the entire album does it justice, tons of great songs that I never really payed attention to and of course some classics
Great album overall, so many songs I hadn’t heard before. My favorite imaginary band
Great beats and guests
A peculiar album. It’s so quirky and weird, yet every song sounds unique and flows along with the others. Damon Albarn is truly a genius.
instant classic
Dare I say their best album??
Never listened to a full Gorillaz album before, but I honestly think this fucking rocks. Every track is so intricate, but no beat pattern or melody sticks around for too long. It’s constantly progressing, and I think it’s one of the most interesting albums we’ve had on this list Clint Eastwood also freakin rocks.
Bangers
absolute love
Nice album, chill, fun and very diverse, makes me want to go walking while listening to it. Also, I forgot how much I love "Tomorrow Comes Today", a true joy this album. I looooove Gorillaz!
Pretty good.
Unique sound and concept paired with catchy music
(y)
Great fuckin album! One of the classics from my youth! I remember hearing this for the first time and it just being mesmerized! And here this many years later they are still kicking it!
Foundational album. I want to think the way that this album makes me think Damon Albarn thinks
Yes.
Love this album and some of the diverse sounds. Can’t believe it’s now 25 years old.
Probably the best thing that came from the Britpop Wars of the 1990's. Damon Albarn and friends play the studio as though it were an instrument and spin funky gold. Knock a half-star because I still don't get the whole "virtual cartoon band" concept. Is it supposed to be like The Archies or Josie and the Pussycats? Was there a TV show about them that I missed?
Best there ever could be.
Does my love for Blur carry over to Gorillaz? Yes, yes it does. The best songs on here have Del the Funky Homosapien with Clint Eastwood being the banger of all bangers from this album.
1/19 Classic debut album from the Gorillaz. Nothing but bangers here
Awesome debut album though I prefer Demon Days and Plastic Beach over this since it is more of a fun listen. Clint Eastwood is my standout from this album.
YES! demon
Al geluisterd
It's Gorillaz
goated album
One of my favorites album ever
Vibes: Rainy Day Chill Favorite songs: Clint Eastwood, Double Bass Dislike songs:
You think there’d be at least mention of bananas in Gorillaz by Gorillaz. I had this CD as a kid and listened to it repeatedly so the entire thing is basically seared into my brain. Possibly the best thing Damon Albarn ever made
Love this album, this is one of the best albums of the early 2000's. Creative and refreshing for that point in time.
PEEEEEEAK, already know this album front to back 😛😛 love me sum gorlliaz
The first album generated and dear lord we are running. Am appauled that I've never taken the time to listen this album before, but grateful that it will never again be true.
Get the cool shoeshiinnnneeee
okay i get why people fw gorillaz
wow this album is blowing me away its seriously like one of the best I've listened to so far such a large variety of music on it, not what I expected at all!
love. love. love.
Great album. Already a big fan of it.
I remember listening to this in 2001 and it was unlike anything I had heard before. I immediately downloaded what I could from Napster and loved it all, so went and hit the record store to get the full sound. Picked it up and G-Sides and some single\EPs that were out at the same time. Then listened to them non stop. What a great time to be alive.
Classic through and through
This is so Y2K and so nostalgic at the same time that gives me chills. And when I remember the vocalist is the same of Blur is so mind twisting.26 years ago and still remains a classic.
Love this album
This is an album that merits some reading about cultural context to fully appreciate it. When Britpop had become a cozy, predictable drudgery for the artists with whom it was most closely identified, some of them hunkered down in the dazed comfort until their diva tendencies made it unsustainable. Others (well, at least one of them) branched out to collaborate with some of the voices that weren't welcome in the dominant music scene at the time, expanding genres and minds. AND! None of that is even to mention that this was presented to the world as a band made up of animated apes. So weird and awesome (and, in terms of the animated band members themselves, very cute). I'd imagine anyone born within ten years of me knows "Clint Eastwood" and both the original and Soulchild-remixed "19-2000" (and has probably spent some time, as I did, being annoyed by how intensely overplayed both songs were), but the album is even more all over the map than those two very different singles would suggest. "Double Bass" is a great instrumental break that's simultaneously hip-hop and something you would hear during the intermission of a movie in the 60s. "Latin Simone" feels out of place until you realize how perfectly it fits on such an eclectic album. Ditto "Slow Country," a trippy and disorienting blend of reggae and fuzz. The rhythm section on "M1 A1" could hold its own on a much heavier track, but as it is this is as close to Blur as the album gets. Whenever the band starts to sound too much like a Blur side-project, though, a beat kicks in or an echo-y and expansive guitar riff sends you off into a desert somewhere, or the bass pulls you down into the low end in a way that no mere Britpop band ever could, and you forget about the Blur connection.
A cartoon band accidentally telling the truth about the future while sounding cool as hell doing it. Rating: 4.8/5 Short Review: This album feels like it arrived slightly out of phase with reality — part hip-hop, part dub, part alt-rock, part electronic haze — and somehow made all of it feel inevitable. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett didn’t just invent a band; they invented a container where genres could bump into each other without asking permission. It’s playful but lonely, ironic but sincere, detached yet deeply human. The songs sound like late nights online before anyone knew what “online” would do to us. Favorite Track: Clint Eastwood
Classic great album.
Outstanding album.
what should I do???I mean should I finish this comment every day?
Absolute fire and always will be
enter gorillaz, the first true "virtual band". the image of the band on the cover is honestly a perfect visual for the entire album. it's such a brilliant anomaly of an album... imagine being in the 2000s and just seeing the cd. and knowing nothing about the group or the music. i love damon albarn, i love miho hatori, i love dan nakamura. i love all these talented musicians gathering together and creating a perfect, unique fusion of pop, hip hop, rock... seriously, gorillaz at their debut had such a unique energy that nobody had and nobody will have. nowadays their core style has depleted, and it's a shame. they need to really stop making clean processed indie pop and go back to this utterly stinky and swampy energy. shut the hell up and get the cool shoe shine.

DOPE. I like Gorillaz, and Clint Eastwood was my introduction to them. Hope this lives up to high expectations (havent listened to full album in a while). The whole "virtual band" aspect of Gorillaz has always been really weird to me. But it's kinda fun. Definitely different. Listening notes: -5/4 almost seems to be an instruction into how the 5/4 time signature works. Anyway, works for me. -Tomorrow Comes Today, rocks. -Clint Eastwood: my introduction to Gorillaz. A huge hit and justly so. Few songs make me feel as cool while I'm listening. -This album has such a wide range of influences. Staggeringly eclectic. -Dang it's long. But not like Smashing Pumpkins long.
Formative album from my teens. Listen to it on repeat, and hasn’t left the rotation since I got it. Love the rhythm and its oddball lyrics and themes. Nothing quite like it
Perfection
There are definitely some stinkers on this album, but the highs are so high that it balances it out, also the production throughout is just superb. I really like the early Gorillaz catalogue when they had more obvious Trip Hop elements. Low 5.
One of the best of this century
Finally, an album with dynamic genres and experimental instrumentations.
One of Gorillaz's best albums in my opinion. My personal favorite is plastic beach, but this is my second favorite album. So different for the time it was released. Very intriguing concept of an album. It always surprises me how their first album was a concept album that had a digital band that was backing for it. There is even a lore behind all of the fictional characters of the band. Groundbreaking album by a groundbreaking band.
Além desses gosto da vibe de Rock the House, Slow Country, Double Bass e New Genious (Brother).
I remember going to target when I was 11 and watching the Clint Eastwood music video for the first time. I really fell off from this band until plastic beach came out. After that, I found there discography to really have a lot of solid albums. One of my favorite bands of all time
Just great. The beats were fresh and timeless at the same time while picking up great influence from their features. One of those albums that my grandkids will listen to and respect.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!

Pretty goooood
Varied, clever and skillfully written and thus far more interesting than anything Albarn ever wrote with Blur, this genre-buster marks the start of the most creative alternative rock project of the 21st century. A little uneven (Punk has a whiff of the pop-punk fad of the era) and not quite as polished as later efforts but all of the core components are here. An album very much of its time (was there another time trip-hop was this mainstream?) and worth a listen if you want a look at a route hip-hop and rock could have taken without the rise of Bling and the garage rock revival respectively.
It's a nostalgia bias, but I love it.
Another one that I know every note of. Gorillaz hit in a way that's hard to explain today.... it was the animation, sure, but it was a way for Albarn to show his chops far, far beyond what he could pull off in Blur. And it showcased his love for rap and hip-hop... Albarn has an honest love of black music and artists and pulls them in to amazing collaborations. This is true musical history here. Don't miss out. And it still fucks, 24 years later.
Fan
Haven't heard this release since 2001. Still sounds so damn fresh. Brilliant!
Forgot how good this album was, the Del tracks are obviously a highlight but there's not a bad track here.
Still an absolute banger of an album
Pezzo preferito Tomorrow comes today
clint eastwood banger 19/2000 banger M1 A1 surprisngly good
2001 anthems blessed by Del. 6/5
I love Gorillaz!
CLassic 19-2000 is the best
Classic Gorrillaz. Varied and excellent
one of the only things i like that Damon Albarn has done
Repeat listen
Super duper
Gorillaz just have a way of making you feel so cool for listening to them. Or for feeling like you can never be as cool as them and you're punching above your weight, maybe. Can't help but love their sound
I've loved this album for years, it's difficult to see it in a new light.
Tremendous album that also has a lot of of half-finished thoughts. Not quite stinkers, maybe not even skips, but they're not good songs. That's part of the appeal, though: the whole thing is kind of a "what if...?" that works, even when it doesn't. The hits are huge, of course, and the fact that they were thrift store keyboard presents somehow make them better, not worse. At an hour, it's too long for something that is fundamentally an experiment, but understandable. Musically, the combo of the plodding beats, the beeping boops, and Damon's languid crooning are a good mix, and the addition of Del freestyling the dumbest shit on top of the above is a nice mix. One thing I hadn't noticed was some slight bleed from Damon Albarn's work with Michael Nyman. Nice way to soften the digital precision. Twisting the dials to get just the right mix is obviously a work in progress, but if you favor beepboop, some tracks might land better than others, but if you're a britpop fan, you may appreciate differently. Dialing one of the sounds of the future takes time. The interesting thing about this album is that it's kind of a funhouse mirror to pop music - the visual aesthetic is so heavily tied to the sound, something that doesn't really show up when just listening. It's an art piece as much as a band/album, and both are good. Don't think it's a 5 album, but I do think it's a 5 gestalt. I mean, who remembers Geep Simulator? How many albums encourage a multi-media experience that extends to a (shitty) flash game? It might be cheating to include Everything but since I was around for it and entranced by it I'm gonna give it the bump. One thing about this list, as an aside, is how it shows how time has compressed for me. I remember this coming out and going, "wow blur was making music a long time ago, Mr. Albarn! What a new and exciting sound you have!" and this was only two years after 13? A blink.
The first time I heard Gorillaz, someone played Tomorrow Comes Today on the radio saying they were a new band and Damon Albarn had contributed guest vocals to the track. It piqued my interest and it was a while until I realised it was actually Albarn's new project so it's funny, listening again now for the first time in years, how much of it sounds like a lost Blur album. It felt like such a departure for him at the time. This is a really adventurous, fun, creative and intriguing album that's really standing the test of time.
Off the cuff remark: a mash up of great musicians, artists etc was always destined to be interesting, at the very least. And it is. Eclectic, fun and with some very fine tunes. Standout track: it works very well as an album, which is always nice but 5/1 and M1-A1 are particularly great, oh and Clint Eastwood too. Revisit?: always nice to drop back into when the mood takes.
The soundtrack to my early teen years. Such a great album and I won’t hear anything criticism about it, thank you!!
Album of time
Classic
Amazing debut, really interesting to see how many directions band could have gone but the seed of sound in this album. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 easily best two tracks
Great album that kickstarted a second career for Damon Albarn.
Solid album from start to finish
This was super fun! 5
Fun! 5
Classic
All amazing always!
Always in my Spotify Lists
One of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. Super original and creative.
Classic
💚
A hell of a debut album. Gorillaz rule, and this album is not just great, it changed the game. Gorillaz had so much influence over music in the 2000s that the album deserves a place in a museum. Best track for me is, sorry to be basic, Clint Eastwood, but Tomorrow Comes Today and 19-2000 are close behind. There's a lot of good musical experimentation here, give it a listen.
Absolute experimental, eclectic banger
There are some albums that really bring me back to a particular time and place. This one was me, fresh out of high school and working at a record store. Gorillaz was on constantly. Honestly, this isn't the band's best album, but there was something really special and unique about their debut. To start with here was Blur's Damon Albarn abandoning his Brit Pop roots for something completely different, which was already a surprise. There's such a fun mix of trip hop, punk, Latin, and pop sentimentalities here. Albarn recruited Dan the Automator to produce, who in turn set the standard for Gorillaz to bring in diverse collaborators in future albums. The debut has a fantastic cast of musicians, including Del the Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala, Miho Hatori, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Tom Tom Club/Talking Heads. The mix of sounds was completely unlike anything I'd heard before. The next thing that really stands out is the artwork by Jamie Hewlett. Plenty of bands have their frequent collaborators for album artwork, but Gorillaz were unique in having their artist as a proper member and co-founder of the band. There is no Gorillaz without Hewlett. Along with Albarn, the two were reeling from recent breakups and feeling disillusioned with pop culture. Supposedly they were watching a lot of MTV and described it as experiencing hell. From that came the idea of crafted an animated post-apocalyptic band. Despite not playing any instruments or writing any songs, Hewlett's characters play a central role in the feel of the music. They're more than mascotts, they're properly attached to the music, even "performing" live at Gorillaz's songs. As mentioned, Gorillaz have better albums, but I get why this one was chosen. Despite some filler, it was a pretty exciting album that still holds up well today.
Such a dope album, forgot how good their first album was as I got more into demon days and plastic beach.
Gorillaz, Gorillaz, 2001 ☆︎☆︎☆︎☆︎☆☆︎/☆︎☆︎☆︎☆︎☆︎ Six stars, why not? You didn't even have to know they would be prolific to accept the talent and concept here were spot-on. I like the fact that in a defining judgement of 90s Britpop, this album far outsold all of Blur's output combined, and you obvs could probably add like Pulp and some others in there and still have room. Fun shit, eh? Albarn was serious in his desire to bring forth all stripes of music in this band: Del the Funky Homosapien (who had already burned his delivery into our brains via Tony Hawk video games), his generous use of melodica (relegated to the background till now, used only by New Order and various ska acts) and this sort of hey guys, trip-hop doesn't need to be this dark, too-stoned sludge message made Gorillaz like really fun and genre-defying. So what if the alter-ego comic book stuff was maybe alienating to those of us well into adulthood. The graffiti vibe and modern day punk element all blended well with their output. Barely a poor track on the thing. I've got friends, former loves, who will pine about days of listening to Portishead and Massive Attack in chillout rooms and while I see the appeal, why stop there? If Massive Attack's Mezzanine is your glass of bourbon after a long day, once you're settled: come on, get happy with this record.
Classic, ageless, still so fresh sounding
I really liked this! Got a lot of sounds I didn't expect
Damon and friends. Hard to get better. Multilayered and magical, bouncy and danciful, such glorious evidence of the interconnected reality of the human thang!
Blur blurred into Gorillaz. Genius. Coming back to this album every few months. Full of mischief. Great atmosphere. Banger tracks (New Genius, Clint Eastwood).
A chameleon album of trip/hip hop, alternative rock, pop, dub, and other sounds and influences, with a heavy low end. It’s a lot of fun annd all over the map with some unexpected turns, but it still has a consistent Gorillaz sound and fits well together as an album. It’s not about the components - individual parts and instruments won’t necessary impress - but their culmination into an original coherent sound and catchy melodies regardless of style or tempo. There really isn’t a single song I dislike here; they’re all interesting and unique in their own ways, even the simpler and more repetitive tracks bring something to the table. Guest features are tasteful and make a notable contribution to the feel of the album and songs. Best cartoon band ever!
This album came out the same year I went to kindergarten. My mom bought me this albums and The Vines album as a present for starting school. So this album is will always be 5 stars to me :)
Pooaaaaahhhhhhh
The self-titled debut from Gorillaz was nothing short of groundbreaking when it dropped in 2001. A virtual cartoon band created by Blur’s Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett might have sounded like a gimmick, but this album is anything but. It’s a fully realized, genre-bending project where hip-hop, dub, lo-fi, Britpop, and electronica collide in a way that felt completely new and exciting. The album is soaked in a moody, laid-back atmosphere, quirky and off-kilter, yet surprisingly focused. Tracks like “Clint Eastwood”, “Tomorrow Comes Today”, and “19-2000” became instant hits and showcased the band’s ability to blend heavy beats with catchy melodies and charismatic character. Dan the Automator’s production is both gritty and stylish, like a dusty record found in a futuristic world. Combined with Albarn’s unmistakable vocals and a cast of guest features, the result is a kaleidoscopic but coherent listening experience. Gorillaz managed to create a new kind of pop music, wrapped in a complete visual identity, and it has had a lasting impact on how music and aesthetics are connected. This is not just a strong debut, it’s a landmark album that still sounds fresh today. 5/5
🔥
❤️
Fantastic album! Made in 2001, but sounds so fresh. Love the hip hop, alt/indie rock and electronic combination. My first full album experience of the Gorillaz and I am in love! Will be listening to it a lot more throughout this year.
great debut by a great group. A little something for everyone here! Damon Albarn at his best, and he's not even the best part. Great variety in song writing and styles.
What a debut! Just an eclectic mix of styles, inspirations and artists that leads to some of the catchiest and unique music of the 2000’s. Del the Funky Homosapien for goodness sake! If you listen to this album and don’t find at least 1 song that appeals to then I don’t know what to tell you. You just don’t like music.
Phenomenal. Each of these tracks is a world unto itself, so well realized and inventive that to listen is to be immersed. Clint Eastwood is one of the best hip hop tracks of all time in my opinion: the distinctive loop at the start is immortal by now, as is the chorus (I aint happy, im feelin glad / i got sunshine, in a bag / im useless. But not for long / the future is coming on). It's simple but profound, seedy in a way that manages to be universally appealing. But the whole album is gold, with incredible production that's made for you to get lost in with a good pair of headphones. In a broader sense, it's a brilliant successor to Portishead's Dummy, another entry on this lost I loved - both projects make be immensely proud of British alternative hip hop.
I’ve got sunshine in a bag
splendid. just an amalgamation of rap and pop and rock and i love it. “clint eastwood” ALWAYS hits but so did the rest of the album. 5/5.
Love it ever since it was released! This is one of those records that defines the early 2000s, at least for me.
1:33 am - first time getting an album i've already heard before!! i know i'm giving this a 4/5, but it's nice to revisit this anyways. 1:46 am - wait, this is a 5/5 album, how did i forget lmao. too bad im on vacation now, as i have a dvd of all of the animations for this album, and that would be great to watch with this. also, the original cd could be put into your computer and a program would open up where you could look at song lyrics, and also tour murdocs winnebago. i wonder if that program could be found online.
weird and loud
One of my favorites.
Love Gorillaz. Both wacky aesthetics, lore, and music. I think "Demon Days" is a better album, but this one also slaps. Fun fact the melody from "Clint Eastwood" was actually just a demo loop from a Suzuki Omnichord. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kn8ocOsdbEo 1 - would not listen to again 2 - if some one played it, I'd probably just zone it out 3 - didn't hate it, didn't love it 4 - saved some songs from the album 5 - would buy the album or already own it
Played the heck out of this one back in the mid 00s, never actually bought the album which I feel kinda bad about now.
Clint Eastwood was heating up when I was vacationing in London and I'll always remember that.
I got sunshine in a bag
Good album overall
Oh man, this album takes me back. Listened to it nonstop in highschool.
8/10 - Although Demon Days is objectively a better album, gorillaz debut feels like there’s more soul, more passion behind it. It’s quite a coincidence this album is after a blur album. It’s presents a bold new creative outlet from Damon, resulting in a great experimental album
Soft 5. I think it's good overall, but not as iconic as some of their other work. Good instrumentals and vocal work. 'Clint Eastwood' is always a classic, but 'Sound Check (Gravity)' was my fave.
get the cool shoe shine
Fave
Love this shit! One of the better albums by one of my favorite bands.
Great album
4.5 stars. Virtual band that is the creative outworking of Blur front man Damon Albarn but sounds incorporates more trip-hop than straight alt rock. Had heard and loved "Clint Eastwood" but didn't know much else about the rest of the record but loved it all. Varied sound but the lo-fi/chill vibe throughout makes for a very listenable album.
Feels like an important album.
While Demon Days is--in my humble opinion--Gorillaz's best album, the self-titled is easily second best. Gorillaz was fire between 2001-2010.
Finally…
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Was greatly influential in my music taste from back in middle school.
Nice album :)
Just a classic, so easy to listen to and I think pretty conceptual and groundbreaking at the time. Love it!
I love this album. I remember the first time I heard Clint Eastwood, it was unlike any other music I was listening to at the time. I've had this on repeat since it showed up on the list.
Absolutely groundbreaking for its time. Their next 2 albums deserve to be on this list as well.
I know this is a 5, one of my favorite Alvin’ albums. Stellar kickoff to a decades long career.
Groundbreaking
I mean this is an awesome album, I already had a couple of the playlist; 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood but most of these are crazy good. I especially liked Rock the House
Alright I have to admit that I already love this album. I had this baby on repeat all through college and the days beyond. I'm going to take a more critical listen here, but Gorillaz holds a special place in my heart. The vibes are immaculate. I dont know how to describe it well, the music is so chill but attention grabbing; rocky, distorted, chugging at times and slow, clear, and melodical at others. The lyrics overlay the music perfectly. It's a fuzzy engineered lo-fi dream. I legitimately love every song on here, but for the sake of picking favorites, lets go with: "5/4" "Clint Eastwood" - it's freaking iconic - "Sound Check (Gravity)" "M1-A1" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method" Yeah, this holds up so well for me. I think it would do just as well if it was released today. If I had to criticize something, I do think a couple songs could have been cut to shorten the track list a bit ("Man Research," "Punk," "Dracula"), but I like them all anyway. Also the lyrics are kind of slurred or hard to understand at times, but eh, didn't bother me. Easy 5 stars, and I'll probably listen to this album dozens more times before I die.
I love the gorrilaz
Absolutely perfect album to wake up to on a Friday. Zero flaws. 5 stars.
95/1089 - A Top 5 album for me. Very creative and catchy instrumentals, lots of different vocals from Damon Albarn and others (even the ones that sound bad/out of tune like "Gravity" fit the context of the song) and a definitive Y2K sound and message.
I love this album. I love the concept. I can listen all the way through, and it feels like a journey through the world of these cartoon characters.
Debut by the virtual band. Excellent, playful 2000s rock. Very varied and quirky, a lot of bangers.
LOVE IT! Amazing album.
No change up No curveball Nothing but straight GAS
Solid debut album!
5/5 amazing.
One of my fav bands of all time. I recall being blown away by this album—totally original. I can see how it’s so influential.
Great album. Top 5 shows I've ever been to. I was not aware the women from Chiba motto were on the album until yesterdays listen!
Good shit. But I think Demon Days is the better album.
Damon Albarn is one of the most prolific musicians of the modern era. More than a pop star, he’s a student, composer, overachiever. Real quality to his work. Gorillaz has been a brilliant collaborative collective of artists, that just gets more and more ambitious. I don’t love every song, but I adore the project as a whole.
This album meanders around a lot. It sounds like what it is, a couple of musicians fucking around. If that's not your thing, you probably won't enjoy this. However, if you're under 30, try and recognize how different the world was 20 years ago. The late 90s/early 00's were marrying rock and hip-hop everywhere. A lot of people were super upset about it. Gorillaz was always about making the music that these creators wanted to hear in the world. So many collaborators, lending to the albums eclectic sound. Gorillaz will always be the act that got me to seriously listen and consider hip-hop. Del's diction, flow and charisma won me over with Rock the House. Such a laid back and fun little jam. It goes without saying that Clint Eastwood had radio stations (and MTV/Fuse) in a vice grip for a while after it's release. It might not be the best album by Gorillaz, but their self-titled album is undeniably culturally pervasive.
NE
Ten out ten, no notes. Damon Albarn really can do it all, from paid back stripped away melancholy to upbeat and hostile punk. A great debut with lots of new and interesting ideas post blur. Only surpassed by it's follow up.
Most interesting sound and collaborative effort of the 2000's.
Nice and chilled. I like it.
Overall: 9/10 It's my birthday today and I almost cried from happiness when I saw this one pop up. I've been a huge Gorillaz fan since Plastic Beach came out (15 years ago!). I'm gonna mostly focus on Damon Albarn here because to me, he IS Gorillaz. I know that Jamie Hewlett is also incredibly important from a visual standpoint but this is Damon's baby. This is what happens when an artist is unchained and free to do whatever the hell they want. The genre hopping on this thing is crazy, with elements of hip hop, punk, ambient, electronica, etc. There's so many interesting sounds going on, and while it tends to be inconsistent in places, it's never boring. The guest artists add a lot to the album and that trend would continue with further Gorillaz releases. This isn't the best Gorillaz album but it's probably the most important album in their (his?) discography. The idea of a fully animated band was completely original at the time and we've had other completely animated musical artists since. Plus, it showed just how great of a musical mind Damon Albarn has. (Also coincidentally my second "perfect" rated album in a row to feature Tina Weymouth lol) Fav Song: 19-2000 Least Fav Song: Man Research (Clapper)
Love this album
Pour moi, le meilleur mariage alternatif-hip hop. Le son a son identité propre tout en demeurant profondément américain, funky mais graveleux
A game changer and so original when it came out. I still revisit this album often. Demon Days gotta be on this list too!
14/03/25 A classic and unique album. This is the first time I've listened to it.
This one and 'Demon Days' are peak Gorillaz. Listen to 'G-Sides' right after for the full experience.
Es el hijo del think tank de Blur! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🤘🏻👌🏻
19-2000 is a fav of mine, these are some clever monkeys
One of my favorites. A fantastic album
Favorite tracks: Re-Hash, 5/4, Clint Eastwood, Rock The House, 19-2000, Slow Country, M1 A1 I loved this album when it came out. 20+ years later and in this context, I feel like I'm listening for the first time again. In 2001, I was still in the throes of pop fandom (Backstreet Boys, Britney, etc.), but juuust starting to discover other music. My tastes had a lot to do with my (parasocial) relationship to the artists. So it was extremely cool that I didn't know who made this. I mean, now it seems obvious, but at the time? Impenetrable to me. That is SO COOL, right?! How often does that happen? Plus, I loved the characters, I loved the lore, I loved the aesthetic. I was so excited when a video was released for 19-2000, because that was my favorite song on the album and music videos meant a lot to me. Honestly it might still be my favorite track. So weird, so catchy. HERE YOU GO! Looking back, it's clear this album had a stronger-than-I-realized influence on how my musical tastes evolved. So, yeah, there's nostalgia at play here, but honestly this album is still excellent: innovative then, and remains innovative now. Perfect blend of genres that hits all the right notes for me. Every time I finish listening to it, I immediately restart it. 5 stars.
Banger of an album and a very successful musical experiment by Damon and co. Too many good tracks - Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, 5/4, etc. And all the album tracks in between are brilliant and set the mood perfectly. Having now listened to Portishead thanks to the generator, I can now see the connection and influence between them, particularly with the trip-hop elements in tracks like New Genius (Brother). Enjoyed listening to this again, I’ve got it on repeat now!
Easy, easy 5 for me. This is one of the albums I can remember getting as a teen and listening to almost non-stop. Even my mom really enjoyed it at the time and this was NOT her normal type of music.
This is such a great album from front to back. Easily in my top 10 albums of all time.
This is an all time favorite album
Another album I had heard some songs from, but this was my first time hearing the whole thing. Cool beats throughout, a lot slower and more repetitive than I expected given the songs I was more familiar with. Great listen.
This is the 31st album I’m rating. If I remember correctly I’ve only listened to Feel Good Inc. and it wasn’t that great. However, I’ve heard Gorillaz is great so I have high hopes. Adding to my Playlist - Re-Hash, New Genius (Brother), Punk, Sound Check (Gravity), Double Bass, Rock the House, 19-2000, Slow Country, and M1 A1. Not Adding to my Playlist - 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Man Research (Clapper), Latin Simone (¿Que Pasa Contigo?), and Starshine. Re-Hash - This lived up to expectations. This is much better than Feel Good Inc. This sounds great and a little like Tricky. 5/4 - I completely forgot but I’ve actually heard this song before. I actually heard it because it was in 5/4 and you know what it still sucks. Clint Eastwood - I wasn’t sure if I’ve listened to this before but I definitely did. I didn’t like it at first and I still don’t. M1 A1 - This feels like 22 Going on 23 but I don’t really like it as much. However, it is still good. All in all I liked 9/15 songs. This was pretty good and was pretty much what I expected in quality. However, I was not ready for this much variety which was a very nice surprise.
I love this album. It's nostalgic for me, it's got a great innovative sound, it's easy to listen to but also really entertaining and takes a lot of turns. I dare say, this is a 5.
Oh just going to casually create one of the greatest blends of genres for a side project as you do? Wow cheers Damon
Album of my childhood, defined a lot of future listening for me. 5/5
Awesome album, hugely experimental - just feels like people in the studio saying “hey let’s try this out” and switching up the vibe every song. I can appreciate a lot of different styles of music so this is my ideal kind of album where it’s obviously just really creative people having fun and playing around to see what sticks for them. Eastwood is the highlight, but things like Punk, Double Bass (which is just a Bond game menu theme) & Latin Simone are so cool to include where it’s clearly just them playing around with that different kinds of music and seeing what they can do. Four songs added to my playlist, ten songs added to the 1001 playlist
I had some of this on cassette when I grew up, it's close to being some of the first music I owned. I can remember seeing the music video for 19-2000 and being completely entranced around the age of five. So it's fair to say I'm well and truly nostalgia giggled, but I've always come back to listen to this. For me, Demon Days is the real five, but it's not on the list. That said, you can hear the building blocks here, or maybe more accurate to look at it like a tree sprouting the different branches that would go on to be realised in Demon Days. I love the mythology around the band, but as I've grown older I've also come to appreciate how much you can hear Damon Albarn completely embracing a new emerging genre after spending so many years enjoying mainstream success in another. It doesn't sound like someone getting in a band wagon, it sounds like someone enjoying a well earned try at something new. Anyway I'm rambling, I liked the album. The remixes are great fun too.
Outstanding. I love these guys.
Grew up listening to this album. One of my all time favourites.
Incredible how different all of their albums sound. This isn’t their best, but a good intro album. Hope to see some others on this list
There is an eerie darkness that pervades the entirety of the album full of nearly unskippable offerings. With this initial album, the Gorillaz were still characters that can easily be heard throughout the album as if they were real. Del the Funky Homosapien offers all of the rap on the album, as supposed to the following albums which utilize many guests. Here everything sits as a single offering album, one that after all these years hasn’t really aged and has remained relevant and cool.
Certified Classic. Demon Days was my first album i ever bought but this was is definitely equal in terms of quality/creativity. Lots of great songs and weird blends of alt rock, hip hop and electronics all over this thing.
Truly spectacular mushroom hunting album
Excellent reveal from a now iconic band. Good combination of electronic and Damon Albarns rock roots. You could argue that it was a huge influence on the electro alt music of the 2000s. Great features from Del the funky Homosapien. Likes: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Rock the House, Tomorrow Comes Today Dislikes: None
I love this album. It's one of the first album's I ever bought and has such a grimey vibe that suits a debut animated band. It is full of atmosphere and just a taste of what is to come. It helps that it is a little nefarious and almost Gothic in its approach to some things as that is very much my jam.
Well, my review didn't end up getting saved which is a bummer. Basically this album was super rad. The beats were really cool and there was some nice variety. It was the perfect album to get into the zone to because it was just meditative and chill enough but also it was interesting enough that I could just really groove to it.
THIS ALBUM RIPS. I love how experimental this is and how it just works. The fusion of so many cool sounds under the guise of a "virtual band." Its alt rock, dub, ska, hip hop, rock, punk, new wave, krautrock, electronic. But it's all so tight and cohesive. The whole album flows so perfectly and really nothing ever feels out of place. Its truly a "music producers" record. Its basically an hour of showing music producer porn and showing off, but it totally works. Every song is crafted perfectly to fit the vibe and story of the record, but each song is totally unique and would stand on its own. Which I think is kind of rare for an album like this. I also love that there really isn't / wasn't anything like this when it came out. Its really unique.
Lots of people pioneered this sound on the cusp of the new century, a blend of pop and hip-hop and cartoonery. What’s surprising here is how fun and funky and fresh it still sounds!
Maybe I'm nostalgia baited, but the album is great! Love what they were cooking.
Love this album, love Gorillaz. Clint Eastwood is a BANGER
I like this album
You know, compared to the next two albums they would release, I feel like Gorillaz's debut is a little bit overshadowed. It doesn't have the narrative tightness of Feel Good Inc. or Plastic Beach, and in a way, the sound here is a bit more wild and all over the place, maybe even garage/ punk. You can definitely tell the more DIY sound as Damion Albarn tries to figure everything out and I kinda miss that on the next few albums, even if they are better overall. 9/10
it's Gorillaz, it's good.
I have heard this like 10 times at this point- for me it’s great
Solid Album has some hits on it.
Always feels like cheating when I get an album I already love. What a joy to listen through again. Absolutely love several tracks: Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, Latine Simone, Slow Country, 19-2000. Can't forget the next tier: Re-Hash, Tomorrow Comes Today, New Genius, Man Research, 5/4. Yeah turns out this album absolutely rocks, I could listen to it any day, and for that.. it gets the rare 5 star. 4.7/5
Very good. Enjoyed finically getting around to listening to it in full
Came at the absolute right time in my youth so left an impression. M1 A1 is like tattoed in my brain at this point
I love this album. So fun, so unique. Fantastic from top to bottom.
It’s a 4 but nostalgia and remembering a couple old bangers off here boosts it up to a 5.
su genialidad radica no solo en lo musical y compositivo, sino tambien en su originalidad
Very cool concept and overall great album. This was the first album I ever owned so I may be biased but I love the blend of alternative and hip hop influences. Favorite songs were: 2. 5/4 11. 19-2000 15. M1 A1 10/10
I love the Gorillaz but have never listened to this album start to finish. I lived in England when Demon Days swept the nation. I remember being obsessed with the album art. Damon Albarn came into this project with very well formed idea. The entire Gorillaz sound is on display on this debut record. "Tomorrow Comes Today" has the melancholy instrumentals / vocals that remain central to their future projects. "Clint Eastwood" which showcases the other side of the Gorillaz signature sound - a Dan The Automator beat with Del rapping on it. I believe they got connected for this project because Dan was working on Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz at the same time. Del's voice and flow is iconic and is an irreplaceable part of the Gorillaz for me. "Punk" is the first song that brings me into the 'Gorillaz Universe' a little. It really does sound like a synthesized attempt at a punk song made by the characters. "Rock The House" and "19-2000" are my two favorite songs on the album. I've listened to them so much. They are both so unique and quintessentially Gorillaz. Del continues to spit and the beats are really fun. No other band has me moving my whole body as squeaky recorder noises come in under the vocals. "M1 A1" feels like I'm listening to Dark Side of the Moon. Until it doesn't. "Left Hand Suzuki Mode" sounds like I'm listening to The Pogues or a similar band combined with Japanese elements. I like it! This album is amazing. It isn't just the music either, the entire project is cool. The art direction, the band members, and the music videos are all novel and engaging. If it was just the music alone I'd likely give it an eight. There's so many great songs but also some filler. The scope of the entire project elevates it a little higher, so I'll give it a nine. 9/10
I’ve heard an awful lot of albums on this list that want to be this album, but can’t touch it. Is it a band? Is it an art project? Is it a cartoon? It’s just great is what it is.
Awesome album; Gorillaz has a bunch of great songs I hadn't heard!
Here were go. Not their best, but still one of the best of all time.
Great album, chaotic beauty
It was always going to be a 5/5 from me.
Some of the songs felt extremely long, but I am EXTREMELY down for the fake band concept and there’s some major bangers in there
I’m always a happy human when listening to Gorillaz. I’ll admit that it has been a very long time since I listened to their debut from front to back, as I’ve been loving their newer stuff quite a lot. Let’s go back to the origin today! I think you’d be forgiven for not realising this to be the same band if you’d only heard Cracker Island. This record is much tripper than the newer stuff. I don’t think that is a good or bad thing, just notably different. I remember being a teen and playing a flash game that had 19-2000 as the soundtrack and falling in love instantaneously. 5/4 also deserves a shoutout here. Gorillaz introduced me to weird time signatures long before I actually realised it.
own
this went double platinum multiple times for me at various points in life
4 Sterne, aber da es mein erstes Album war wird es für mich immer besonders sein, von daher 5 Sterne.
So electic and bringing good music together. A whole journey
