Reviews (page 3 of 14)

Fuck yea gorillaz, prob my favorite band tbh. but really only know of their hits. Never listened to this all the way through. Tomorrow Comes Today New Genius (Brother) Clint Eastwood is a Certified banger, there is no argument and if you don't like this song, I don't like you Man Research (Clapper) Sound Check (Gravity) !!!!! ok Rock the House is sick except fuck that recorder in the background lmfao 19-2000 Get the cool shoeshine motherfuckers!!!!! certified bop.... or rather a day doo de bop!!! Slow Country !!!!!!!!!!!! This album was already a 4/5 but holy shit I don't think there is a single dud here?! no wonder this was their breakout , theres so many bops

I have loved this record since the first time I heard it when it originally came out. Masterpiece.

This is one of my desert island albums.

I haven't listened to this in a while, but used to play it a lot in the past. It's a great album, very varied, with a bit of stealth Deltron 3030 action. Never cared too much for Gorillaz lore, but it stands on its own without the gimmicks. 4.5 stars, but I'll round it up.

I love the Gorillaz. This isn't even an album I've heard all of before, I normally go to Demon Days. But this was incredible top to bottom. They've always fused sounds that shouldn't work and it just does. There are so many great tracks here that caught my attention from whatever I was doing. Of the songs I didn't really know (sorry Clint Eastwood), I was floored by 5/4 and Double Bass. But this album flaunts electronica, raegae, latin, R&B, and Brit pop as it bobs and weaves through it's many genres. Awesome debut by an awesome band.

As a debut album, it shows incredible versatility in the sound that can be made and elevate the experience on a song. To be honest I only know a few songs off of their discography, but if this is what they have to offer in every album then I'll make sure to check out their other stuff

Hadn't listened to this in ages. My god, I'd forgotten how seemingly flawlessly it combines elements of genres I don't particularly love into one really fucking tight, grooving album that just makes your feet move and your head nod rhythmically.

Why did this get removed from the list? I'll never forgive the British.

Bands like "Gorillaz" and "Kasabian" are what I like to call "Cockney Rock". Please note that this is coming from a "Texan". In other words somebody who knows nothing about the very distinguishable difference of the many different accents from the UK. I use term, "Cockney Rock" to describe bands that emphasize there accents whilst singing there songs. Which by the way, I really appreciate. This album like thier others always come with fun surprises around every corner. Like for instance thier spanish song that appears around late to mid-album. All this to say...I really enjoy my time listening to it.

Sublime as always

Cool to know

Just a stellar collage of various genres including some of the best triphop this side of Massive Attack. Very easy 5.

I haven’t listened to this album all the way through in a number of years, but it is just as good as I remember it. I’m glad it came onto my list when it did because it’s such a killer summer vibes album. The blend of Albarn’s previous rock work and hip hop just goes so well together. I was delighted to hear this album again and many of the songs will go into rotation for my other listening. Would absolutely listen again.

Flawless, one of my all time favorites. It's not that I don't enjoy their newer stuff too, but Damon Albarn being the "main act" on the album makes this peak Gorillaz to me.

Another album I've heard a million times. Really cool and unique. Quirky in a way, but also fresh and cool at the same time. Must say I am really impressed with Damon Albarn. Blur doesn't exactly sound remotely close to this, yet he manages to deliver even better in a completely different context. While (what felt like) hugely popular when it came out, I don't think this is the best Gorillaz album, but it still really good. There are some cool tracks on this record, like 'Tomorrow Comes Today', '19-2000', 'Rock The House', and of course Gorillaz's most famous song: 'Clint Eastwood'. Then there are songs that conceptually tie the record together, but aren't hits per-se, like 'New Genius (Brother)' and 'Sound Check (Gravity)'. A handful of songs could've been skipped, like 'Punk', 'Slow Country', 'M1 A1' to name a few. Before writing the review I was determined on a strong 4, but after skimming through it again I realize that there aren't as many weak songs as I thought, so I will have to put it on a weak 5 instead. I am really a Gorillaz fan though, so probably a bit biased.

Huge vibies

Surprisingly good, divers and interesting music

# Playlist track - 19-2000 # Notes - Still sounds amazing! Definitely influenced by how I felt *back then* when I listened to "Clint Eastwood" for the first time on MTV. - The album is pretty great all around, with the exception of "M1 A1", which is kind of boring. - Very iconic album and definitely worth your time to listen a couple of times, and watch the videos too!

So much fun. Far ahead of its time.

This was great! Aside from a few tracks that are just eh, this album has amazing tracks (Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, etc.) Great album.

Clint Eastwood is one of my favourite songs from the early 2000s, all the other singles are class, and even the really random songs (like Latin Simone and Sound Check) capture a mood or a feeling. Another album I own on CD, although I think my daughter has pinched it - but maybe it is the mark of genious [sic] that it still feels contemporary over 23 years later.

One of my favorite albums of all time

This is a bit sentimental as I listened to this album a lot when it came out, but of course it's a great record. It's very diverse, it shows all Albarn is capable of, it has 5 stars guests, it can go from son cubano to trip hop to abrasive rock. It's a mess, but a beautiful one. This introduced me to trip hop back in the day and seriously broaden my musical horizon.

I'm starting to think that maybe I just like music. I feel like this album was perfect for listening to while I worked. Truthfully, I'm not experienced enough in the genre to provide meaningful input here, but I really liked the sound

Classic. You can hear the influence of the specials.

Just a really weird and cool mix of styles.

Absolute all-timer

You've got to be a special kind of rock star to create a side project that ends up being even more internationally popular than your first internationally popular band. (Also, this album still rips.)

As a longtime Blur fan, Dan the Automator fan, and Del the Funky Homosapien fan (and Kid Koala), I was super excited for Gorillaz and have loved the first album since its release. I went through every Gorillaz album last year, and I still would say the first album is at least tied as my favorite.

Re-Hash - 4.8/5 5/4- 5/5 Tomorrow Comes Today- 4.9/5 New Genius (Brother)- 5/5 Clint Eastwood- 5/5 Man Research (Clapper)- 5/5 Punk- 5/5 Sound Check (Gravity)- 4.7/5 Double Bass- 4.5/5 Rock the House- 5/5 19-2000- 5/5 Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)- 4.8/5 Starshine- 4.9/5 Slow Country- 5/5 M1 A1- 5/5 Dracula- 4.7/5 Left Hand Suzuki Method- 5/5 Clint Eastwood (remix) - 4.3/5 Total- 4.9/5

I had already heard Clint Eastwood before listening to this album in full and loved it of course. But wow, it's full of bangers apart from that track. Incredible.

sorry luke and blair

Finally someone let me out of my cage Now time for me is nothing, cause I'm counting no age Now I couldn't be there, now you shouldn't be scared I'm good at repairs, and I'm under each snare Intangible bet you didn't think So I command you to, panoramic view Look, I'll make it all manageable Pick and choose, sit and lose all you different crews Chicks and dudes, who you think is really kicking tunes? Picture you getting down in a picture tube Like you lit the fuse, you think it's fictional? Mystical? Maybe Spiritual hero who appears on you to clear your view When you're too crazy Lifeless to those the definition for what life is Priceless to you because I put you on the hype shift Did you like it? Gut smoking righteous with one toke You're psychic among knows possess you with one go Yeah, this is some really good shit. 5/5

Outstanding, they're even better live. I saw them at the Kentish Town Forum about the time they released this. Also saw them in Auckland with guests Mick Jones and Paul Simonon.

This group’s first outing may in fact be their best, and that’s a hot take I’ll take to the grave with me.

so many great songs, Love the Gorillaz. Damon is a genius

I was a big Blur fan at the time Gorillaz came out, so of course I had to check this out. I liked the album a lot and it was on constant rotation for a while, it liked the upbeat tempo and how it was different, hip hop for white nerdy guys. Pretty sure this was the first cartoon band I liked since Bam-bam and Pebbles.

What a great debut by the Gorillaz, one of the first virtual bands I had ever heard of, if not the first. When I heard they would be touring, back in the early 00s I had no idea how they would make it work technologically (nowadays seems quite easy with the advances in tech) and really kind of blew my mind on how it worked. The cool slow beats flirt with an amalgamation of genres including alt-rock, lo-fi, trip-hop, and art-pop that also weaves in elements of rap rock, Britpop, and punk rock. Despite the plethora of sounds The Gorillaz seem to get it to work beautifully. Best: Clint Eastwood Worst: Can't pick one - they're all too good!

Einfach nur lässig und cool.

I was happy to see this show up today! I've loved this album since I got the CD when it was first released. This was the first current music I started listening to again after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom and Disney movie soundtracks nonstop.

Heavy nostalgia points. Big plus for Latin Simon for introducing me to Ibrahim Ferrer.

First album I ever bought. Bloody love it still, it's amazing. I listened to it so much as a kid and had the CD as my alarm in the morning for school. Still sounds amazing, still sounds original and has some really different sounds in there. What a belter!

Haven't listened in years, forgot how good it is. Think I might prefer Demon Days, but this was so groundbreaking at the time I remember. Think this was my first album I got (but not bought as my uncle pirated it for me). The music video for 19-2000 was so cool. I remember there was this flash website where the song would play on repeat and you could drive around in the car, was great

One of the best there was, is and will be! Abso-fckn-lutely ADORE this album and anything from The Gorillaz is an instant 10/10

Gorillaz by the Gorillaz. I don't really need to hear that anymore. It's my favorite album by the band and one of my favorites. At the beginning of the 2000s, I heard Clint Eastwood and also saw the accompanying clip. I was thrilled and still am. 5/5

Really good

Foda e lembra minha infância

I ain't happyyyyyyyy. Great to listen to all the way through.

Ha, I'd get my millennial card revoked if I rated this less than a 5. Trust me, I double checked the terms and conditions. 5/5

Fucking good. What a debut. Life changing album. I still remember being blown away listening to Clint Eastwood. This was the start of one of my favorite groups ever. Forever one of my favorites.

Awesome! 5/4 had been my alarm for years

01) Re-Hash - 10,0 02) 5/4 - 10,0 03) Tomorrow Comes Today - 10,0 04) New Genious (Brother) - 10,0 05) Clint Eastwood - 10,0 06) Man Research (Clapper) - 10,0 07) Punk - 10,0 08) Sound Check (Gravity) - 10,0 09) Double Bass - 10,0 10) Rock the House - 10,0 11) 19-2000 - 10,0 12) Latin Simone (¿Qué Pasa Contigo?) - 10,0 13) Starshine - 10,0 14) Slow Country - 10,0 15) M1A1 - 10,0 TOTAL: 10,0 (100/100) Ok, this one is gonna be easy, after all, it is one of my all-time favorite albums. It was a breath of fresh air when it came out, it was like all these music genres mixed into a new one, a cool one. This CD was constantly in my player, I love every song on this album! But if I must choose, my favorites would be "Slow Country" and "M1A1". A thousand miles an hour!

This was a welcome surprise for someone who's had Gorillaz as their top artist on Spotify before, especially since I usually pick this album as my favorite one. My favorite song is easily Rock The House but honestly there's only 2-3 that I don't absolutely love. This album is such a blend of ideas and I really appreciate the looseness of this structure, it's amazing that this album got as popular as it did taking that into account but I'm super into it

I'm mostly familiar with Gorillaz' newer stuff, and I have been missing out. I like the idea of the band as well. Favorite tracks on this listen: "5/4" and "Clint Eastwood."

A classic

#169. I remember listening in high school on the bus on my yellow Sony Sports Discman with 30 second Electronic Shock Protection®️ on a daily basis for at least months. And it's not any less good now than it was then. This album fucks 5/5: Yes.

Gorillas pushes all types of genre lines while making fantastic music. More popular virtual act that hatsune miku tho?

I immediately loved this album when it came out

m1 a1 is so hype its insane

I first heard this album when I was about 12 and I think it changed my brain. It was weird and arty and mysterious and I absolutely loved it. I bought into the art work and fully imagined it was created by a band of Japanese style cartoon characters. I loved the beats, bass, obscure samples (it didn’t even occur to me that the were samples actually), and the strange vocals. I remember finding out it was made by ‘the guy from blur’ and I don’t know how it took me so long to realise, you literally hear his voice. People generally say their second album was better but I didn’t care for their later stuff at all. Listening again I really enjoyed pretty much every track, even the bizarre instrumentals like Double Bass. I really can’t think of another album like it. I’d love to know how I would rate this if it was my first listen, but it’s impossible to be objective. I think it is an odd, eclectic, unique yet catchy album that had no right being mainstream, but I’m so glad it found its way to me as it showed me what music can be.

Oh man, what a wonderful trip down memory lane this one is. The thing I remember most about this release is the shitty online open-world driving game you could play with the car on the cover, and the ubiquitous presence of Clint Eastwood -- I think it was even on a Now CD that I got for Easter one year. I didn't actually get into Gorillaz proper until much later in life, but this still hearkens back to a rosier time. Album opens with Re-Hash, a little drum and bass rhythm piece with various scratching and backing percussion elements. Song doesn't really go anywhere, but I enjoy it all the same for its bright atmosphere. 5/4 is a bit more driven of a piece, and calls back more openly to Albarn's days with Blur. Clint Eastwood is such a delightfully moody indie-hip-hop track; instrumental is like a wide-eyed western nightmare. This song introduced me to Del tha Funky Homosapien (though I wouldn't dig further into his work until much later). Such effortless flow that is hard not to sing along to. 19-2000 is so quirky, but I love it as the definitive early Gorillaz sound. Melody lead by a womping bass and electro keys with Albarns distinctive vocals and a catchy ass nonsensical hook. Utterly bobbable. Always thought M1 A1 was a weirdly out of place song to end this album on. I do enjoy the bonus tracks thrown on here -- never heard Left Hand Suzuki Method before, but it jams. This is one of those albums that I return to when I want a reliable good time. I'm not the biggest Albarn Stan, but I love Gorillaz and this is among their top 3. Not perfect, but I'm struggling not to throw this a 5.

Godddd

Awesome album!

Very good

I mean it's Gorillaz - how could it not be 5*. 0 filler, some of the most recognizable singles to come out of the 2000s. It's totally original, there wasn't much that sounded like this is 2001 and there still isn't much now. There's a gimmick that doesn't detract from the music. Most of the songs would still be smash hits if they came out today. Even the remixes at the end of the album (not on standard release but was on Spotify at time of review) add to the album, and don't feel like afterthoughts. Simply brilliant!

A really good album that I didn’t take notice of when it first came out. One of the more enjoyable albums I’ve had so far.

Love them

I was living in New York when this album was released. Listened to it for the first time at the Virgin Megastore located across from Union Square Park they used to have those listening stations at the entrance of the store. Anyway, the album sounds familiar yet fresh. The different styles explored across each song are amazing. You discover something new every time to listen to it. Love it.

Great concert!

Awesome

Love it every time I listen.

Cool Album : )

get the cool shoeshine

I do like this album a lot. Probably had some effect on my music taste growing up. Don't love every track, but the majority do resonate with me. Not as good as Demon Days, but still very good nevertheless.

Great music, great lyrics...finally something decent!

Classic

One of my fav all time. Love everything in this album. Gorillaz are badass

Head bopping deep beats Shoulders popping vulture style Moody dance pop hop

There are so many element and themes going on in the album, and they meld together so well

Really great album. Excellent listen front to back.

Freaky and nice

Incledible album, one off the best of 2000s

Great!!

Hallmark milestone in music genre evolution!

Amazing album

The gorillas are weird. Thankfully so am I. They have such a wide range of musical talents I’m not even sure what genre I’m in. “Clint Eastwood” claps cheeks. Even the mostly instrumental songs like “Sound Check” and “Double Bass” were amongst my favorites of this album. Ran 10 miles to this album. Mmmmmm That’s a 10. Or maybe a 9. It wasn’t perfect. I demand perfection for the music gods. 9/10

This guy sounds like the singer from Blur. A unique almost genre defining album which I cannot even tell you what genre this is. I was obsessed with Gorillaz growing up after watching the music video for Feel Good Inc. on TV. The idea of an animated band was so fucking cool and continues to be an extremely unique idea 20 years on. There are some absolute bangers on this album. There are some really weird songs on this album. There are some skippable songs on this album. I’ve always thought of Gorillaz as a singles band where there albums are good but the hits are top tier. The intro to M1A1 genuinely creeped me out as a kid. When we saw them in concert they opened with M1A1 and it was the perfect song to start a concert to. The nostalgia rating is heavy on this one and its basically impossible for me to rate this with without rose tinted glasses. 10/10 Why the fuck is Demon Dayz not on this list?!

Listened to it many times!

This is a fantastic album, 5/5!

12/19/23. Classic album for me, listened to this countless times! Will never get old for me.

Love their style and variety of sounds and genres on this album, all executed perfectly.

Good album! I love a lot of the songs on it, and Damon does a good job as 2-D.

BEST ALBUM EVER

My childhood album

Gibberish lyrics, shitty casios and loops, songs that might count as filler, an absolute capsule of the early 2000s. You can't beat it

This is an album from a band that I enjoy and come back to at times, so going into it I knew I was going to decide between a 4 or 5. While it certainly has quite a few bangers, and a couple of really good songs, it also has, unfortunately, some filler songs. It’s also a bit weird to see Gorillaz labeled as “rock”

As someone who grew up on classic radio, I shrugged off this cartoon band as a consequence of my childhood generation for people who had no real taste in music. It was pretentious but I lumped them in with the likes of Linkin Park. It wasn't until a couple years ago when I explored Britpop and was blown away by Damon Albarn's work in Blur, experimental and witty. And from there, I decided to give Gorillaz a fair chance, and it's one of the times where my expectations were far beyond met to an unimaginable degree. It's a modern art pop record that blends so many accessible genres, and each one nails what it aimed to do. I don't care whether it's hip hop, disco, Latin, or punk, he does it all in his own creative way. In every Blur album, there's always a few inaccessible tracks that require a certain taste in music or other understanding to appreciate, but here those tracks have cleaner production and smoother sound that can attract all forms of listeners. Compare "Miss America" to "New Genius" or "Sound Check." No matter who you are, you're guaranteed to find something here for you. It's an album that could sound just as fresh today as it did in 2001. The synths sound natural (in an alien-sorta-way), and the bass hits hard. On very few occasions did I find it too abrasive or clustered. Just like an Aphex Twin record, there were some synths subtlety hidden in the background that purely added atmosphere, while some come front and center and go just as quickly, and this is what I mean by it sounding natural. The number one example is "Man Research." With how the songs all sound different, it makes a very exciting record to play on my sound system. I know I am speaking a bit vague about the tracks, but with how different they all are, it's hard to get into the specifics without talking about the generic characteristics of what they share in common. You have your hits of course, but I found something interesting to like about each and every track. Which is especially surprising considering how much I hate records that span longer than an hour. The virtual band aesthetic adds so much more creative freedom not just in feeling invested into the band, but it also serves to immerse the audience into the world Albarn creates and the characters that populate it. He plays different vocal roles that truly does feel like multiple singers are contributing to the harmony. This is one of those albums that can change how you interpret music. I know this will sound a bit silly to compare, but this is how I see it: When Bob Dylan wrote "Like a Rolling Stones", you had no idea music could sound so confrontational and assertive. Prog rock bands came around and told tales and legends in epic formats. Rave music like techno then dragged you into what sound can be capable of with the worlds they create. And here, Albarn transports you into this cartoon universe with characters and settings that have their own personalities, vaguely familiar to our own forms of pop and rock, but so much more colorful and expressive, feeling like a more imaginative form of music. Except it's real, in our reality, and I appreciate that.

nice piece of work

Classic gorillaz! Clint Eastwood has always been one of my favorite songs of theirs. Obvious this is a 5/5 for me!

Demon Days > Plastic Beach > Gorillaz > The Fall TIL Gorillaz har lavet 4 studiealbums siden 2017???

One of my favorite albums already, but it was good listening through again.

Got sunshine in a bag. Brilliantly bonkers. Love Damon.

Awesome vibes, classic album.

Yes. Incredible.

stand out track - Rock the House

fuck yes

I likea dat

This is an incredible album with so much character. Being a virtual band allowed a unique theme to shine through with lyrics reflecting the world that they live in while still sharing common themes that resonate in real life. Truly a joy to listen to every time.

Always loved this album!

Best Gorilaz album

Don't think I ever appreciated how much of an absolute vibe this album is. And I mean that seriously, like the cultivation of an entirely engrossing mood and aesthetic while traversing multiple genres. It just drips with style and is endlessly listenable. This was a big Dad put it on when I was little album as well, but this was probably the first time I gave it a proper first listen and the production is an absolute treat. No problem saying this is my favourite Gorillaz album and probably one of my favourite albums all told. Four and a half. Fave track: M1 A1 (freaked me out so much as a kid that I had to skip the intro on my ipod nano)

never listened all the through before, the most Blur-like Gorillaz album. But that's a pretty cool thin, just some of the songs were pretty irritating to listen to on a stressful work day, but that's also my fault

There is a copy of this on vinyl in my living room. An excellent example of the genre. Put it on. Chill.

Very good album. I haven't listened to it in awhile and I forgot how good it was. This is a fun one to put on whenever and all the songs are so catchy

Some really interesting tracks and approaches. Set the scene for what was to come. Definitely a headphones album

had been previously stored in my mind

5 even better than I remembered

This is such a classic album.

10/10 timeless album absolutely incredible in every way

Fantastic album

Excellent!

While not my favourite Gorillaz album by any stretch, it's getting a 5 for the sheer originality, inventiveness and sheer number of great tracks here. The trip-hop stylings are right up my street, especially in this 90s/early 2000s era, the music videos were incredible, and there's so much different stuff here. I don't love everything, but as a package I can't dismiss it. It has a slightly uneasy atmosphere, an accurate cynicism about the coming decade, an album for the start of autumn. DD and PB are still better though. 28/07/23

Great re-listen! Kicking it off with a bang!

Discazo. Me encantaba cuando salió y me sigue encantando

obra maestra

Love this album. Not my top Gorillaz album but I still enjoy this a lot.

Genius. Pure and simple. Yeah so some of the songs are a bit blah but who cares when it all ties in with one big concept. This concept is a noughtie Icon.

Yes! I was waiting for some Gorillaz to appear here. Though to be honest, their self-titled debut is one I don't really know all that much about. I only really knew the "mainstream" songs here I guess. It meant there were a few songs I didn't really know, and a few others that are absolutely dripping with nostalgia for my early 00s upbringing here in the UK. Here was this band, really quite different and subversive to anything else getting airtime, this blending of Hip-Hop and Rock but not in a Limp Bizkit sort of way. Then seeing a Gorillaz video on VH1 or MTV or whatever it was playing on the old Sky Digibox and seeing it was all a cartoon band? There was also the memories of finding the Geep Simulator game on AddictingGames and playing the hell out of that, partly for the cool 3D Flash gameplay and also to listen to 19-2000. I don't remember if I ever went to the OG Gorillaz website or not but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot. Then of course, there was the Ed Case and Sweetie Irie refix of Clint Eastwood, an absolute 2-step juggernaut that seemingly took the UK dancefloors by storm in the early 2000s. Though I don't know for sure, I was just a kid, but the amount of airtime that thing got on Radio 1 back in the day makes me believe it. This is like a time capsule of scattered and slightly hazy memories of my early childhood, and I certainly have a new appreciation for it nowadays. However I didn't really feel like I was missing out with the songs on here I didn't recognise, I still have my favourites. Generally I also think it's not my favourite Gorillaz album, I think Demon Days is just way too good, and I even enjoy a lot of their more recent stuff. With all that being said, I realised there's a lot of Gorillaz' back catalogue that I've not really listened to yet, as well as their whole fictional universe that I need to attempt to wrap my head around. I think I know what I'm going to do when I get a few days free! Either way, this was a very strong debut album of the revolutionary, rebellious and ridiculously creative project from Albarn and Hewlett that went on to become the most successful virtual band ever, gaining a much wider universal following than Blur ever managed. Gorillaz pushed the boundaries of what a band was, and its influence on music going into the new millenium cannot be understated. Or maybe that's just the nostalgia talking, but that's how I see it anyway. Favourite: Clint Eastwood

Amazing, loved it

IVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS ALBUM. IM COOL. AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

On heavy rotation for me from like middle school to college. I love there later stuff but kind of think they never topped Clint Eastwood

I've always liked Gorillaz, but never loved them. I've followed them since this premiere and I love some stuff, like a bit more, and really don't dig some of it. They have been a seasoning in my music library for 20+ years. It was really refreshing to listen to this album I haven't played in a long while. I think I liked it more now than when it was new. Every track felt fresh and I have no complaints.

I love this album but I think that is fueled by nostalgia.

Another band on the 1001 that I have had a curiosity about but had failed to take the initiative to explore. Well, I really dug this album for sure.

I haven’t really listened to Gorillaz before. I think I had the idea that this was some kind of joke since it was a virtual cartoon band. I was surprised to see this as something I should hear before I die. Turns out that I enjoyed this album a lot, and nothing about the music would have tipped me off that there was anything virtual about the group had I not already known this. I had grown up hearing “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies and didn’t realize the association to the comic book until I was in my teens. I fell in love with this, more and more with every listen. I’ll be checking out more from Gorillaz.

GOTILQLSLZLZLZLZ

Not my favorite Gorillaz album, but still easily five stars.

Diverse nummers, klinkt lekker. 2e helft iets minder, maar nog steeds geweldig.

One of my fav Albums of all time

I love this album. Was really different when it came around

++Rock the House ++19-2000 and remix ++Slow Country ++Clint Eastwood and remix ++M1 A1 + Re-Hash +5/4 +Tomorrow comes today +New Genius (Brother) +Man Research (Clapper) +Sound Check (Gravity) +Double Bass +Latine Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) +Starshine +Punk Very nostalgic album. Not a single skippable song. Perfect for long car rides. For a debut album really awesome. I like the remix of 19-2000 almost more than the original. Rock the House is all you need in life.

This is the album that sparked my love of oddball hip hop

Great record and great concept. Clint Eastwood is so classic. Also love low country and rock the house.

So good. It's closer to Blur than Gorillaz now but it's still so good.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

love it

Wholesale beat best

I know this one.

I remember when I first heard Clint Eastwood and it blew me away! Definitely the highlight of the album but the rest is solid too. This is a tough one for me. It has enough to be a 4.5 for sure but was torn if I could round it up.

Apparently a new Gorillaz album came out two days ago? What the hell, where was I? Ah, Gorillaz. When I first listened to you, I didn't get you. I didn't like you. It took me, what, a decade for me to give you another chance? And man, am I glad I did. Gorillaz is one of those bands that I think hit for a lot of people in their teens, but that wasn't the case for me. I was musically stunted during my teens, and only remedied that several years later. The idea really shouldn't have worked. A virtual band? Who in their right mind would listen to that? As it turned out, a lot of people would, and for good reason. The music, just fundamentally, is catchy. Now, this isn't my favorite album by the band, 'Plastic Beach' holding that title, but you can't deny the sheer enjoyability of the music. The beats seem effortlessly catchy, the instrumentals mixed together in a super satisfying way and lyrics that sometimes seem weird, and sometimes seem profound. Depends on the mood and the song, I guess. Speaking of mood, I'm in a terrible one today that doesnt fit this album and it still hits. Impressive. Final thoughts: I guess I should go listen to that new Gorillaz album, maybe?

They put out several several albums after this that I prefer but this is still really good. I remember seeing the Clint Eastwood video on MTV2 and being really intrigued. I'd definitely put Demon Days and Plastic Beach on this list over it, but I guess the impact of its release counts for something too. Cracker Island dropped the same day I got this. Interesting coincidence. More of a 4 star album but giving a 5 because I like the discography so much

Well, I like Gorillaz

Topplaat

After thoroughly enjoying "Gorillaz," I stalled on writing the review until the prodding came four days later in the form of Blur's "Parklife." Because Blur and Gorillaz are opposite ends of the Damon Albarn spectrum - the Blur end of gross Britpop (why couldn't anything else they did sound like "Song 2") and the Gorillaz end of genre-defying cartoon brilliance. "Gorillaz" was such a refreshing and much-needed debut when it came out in 2001. "Tank Girl" creator Jamie Hewlett's art and the musical assistance and influence of Dan the Automator and many other collaborators made Gorillaz something that had never been seen or heard before. I listened to this album a lot when it came out, and was happy it held up to my musical taste (aided by nostalgia) more than 20 years later. I've listened to Gorillaz in bits and pieces since then, and know most of their most popular songs from later albums, but I don't know any the way I know their debut. Listening to "Gorillaz" again made me want to delve back in, and the more I consider the concept, the more I adore it. The cartoon characters and their world allow us to hold up a twisted mirror to our own in a way other music can never quite manage, and now that I know there is a detailed fictional history of the band members I'm intrigued to seek out the scattered source material in addition to the albums.

first album i ever owned and fell in love with its a masterpiece 100/10

9/10 - Brilliant album, was a really enjoyable experience and introduced me to the Gorrilaz better

It's silly how much Gorillaz I've listened to. I've been hooked on Gorillaz since I first saw Clint Eastwood on MTV and later when they won best song on the MTV Europe Music Awards with Ali G as the host. It was a silly time. Being a virtual band with distinct band members it's hard not to be intrigued. Gorillaz music is hard to define. It leans towards hip-hop but stretches to alternative rock. It's the perfect blend between Damon Albarns Blur roots and the production from Dan the Automator which the latter did the awesome collaboration Deltron 3030 with Del the funky homosapien that did the rapping on the song "Clint Eastwood" and "Rock the House". I would say that Gorillaz is in the Gorillaz genre. I've yet listened to something as diverse but still having a coherent sound. Every song is splendid and the creativity and uniqueness is the reason I still listen to Gorillaz. Their debut album is no exception even though their subsequent albums are better.

Way, way, better than I thought it was going to be

One of my favorites from my teenage years, I have so many memories tied to this album.

I LOVE THE GORILLAAZZZZ

Love this album and have done since it came out. Listening back it is noticeably an infant version of gorillaz sound with tracks like Punk having more in common with Blur than gorillaz later stuff. Interesting to listen alongside tracks like Tender on Blur’s 1999 “13” (two years earlier) to hear the transition between the two groups. Tender could easily sit on this album and fit in as much as it does on the Blur album. I like Damon’s locals on this album, they’re really sad and childlike. I hope other Gorillaz albums make it into the book as I def don’t think this is there best. But still a fave. First edition of this book came out in 2005 so some of gorillaz best stuff might not make it. This album has some really danceable tracks that are just good fun, ultimately I love gorillaz for the sense of weird fantasy storytelling which I don’t think is present on this album as much. So still a 5. Top track: probably tomorrow comes today. I also love Man Research.

Such a vibe, love the harmonica

Oh man, childhood. It's been so, so long. Old heads will hate this, probably complaining that it's all electronic and the beeps and boops aren't that interesting to listen to. You're more than welcome to hold that opinion, much like how I hold that Neil Young isn't Good or Interesting. The entire album is endlessly creative, especially for the early 2000's. Damon and Jamie are ruthlessly interesting with novel hooks, beats, and sounds, creating whatever the hell they like and making it all sound good. Such a phenomenal album, such a great debut. Love.

masterfully produced really enjoyed love Damon albarn will definitely be listening again

Their 1st was their best. Trippy, Blurry, sunny, funny, freaky like Happy Mondays, bit of all good things UK music had to offer those days. Clint Eastwood true classic

no doubt about it, a childhood classic

i forgot how much i listened to this album when it came out. this is possibly the second best character played by all bran, after the africa express one, that character is still one of my favourites, it's like something straight off fonejacker. anyway, yeah this album is really good, the second one was a bit arse and you only ever hear the shaun ryder one on the radio which is a bit of a joke, but such is advertised radio.

Helllooooo Clint Eastwood.

Very unique album blending rock, hip/hop, electronic, and country sounds.

❤️

i got sunshine in a bag

Oh, hell yeah, dude, I love this album. The future sucks, and Damien Albarn knew it back in 2001.

Had never listened to this album/band/group. Love it. Will be adding to my rotation.

Whole album is a vibe. What an incredible debut that holds up 21 years later.

5/5. This album is not only one of the best Gorillaz albums and debut albums in general, it is also a modern classic and I'm glad that it has a place in this list.

Amazing blend of indie sounds and hip hop beats. It sounded so fresh at the time.

As good as ever.

Great album

A classic from Woolworths... 👌

One of my most listened to albums of all time. I wore this CD out in Middle School/High School, had a giant 2D poster on my wall (it was about the size of the entire wall), played the geep driving game, and worshiped the Gorillaz lore like it was gospel. I may be a bit bias on this one is what I'm saying.

uhh best album ever duh

Genre bending album that kicks

Classic album I grew up with. The sound of going to the mall with your friends to piss off the shop workers.

New genre, great Albarn.

m1a1 going thousand miles an hour

This band made something new happen in a super-funky and rocking way. 6 stars.

I cannot come to this album without bias. Honestly, it’s among my least favorite of their works. But… god damn… I just fucking love the Gorillaz. It’s like a blended smoothie if everything I want in a group and I’ll drink it up every time.

I mean, this album is a phenomenal debut. Although I grew up on Demon Dayz, I can see a version of myself considering this to be one of the most iconic albums ever.

Just sick. People ubiquitously respond well to the gorillaz.

Oh yeha

Have this album on vinyl already so I'll listen to it on that. Gorillaz are one of my favorite acts and I already know this album is 5/5!

one of my favorite albums of all times. so...

Ahh back when CDs were still a thing this was such an exciting release and we played it to death. My kid got into Gorillaz a few years ago and this got a lot of airplay on car trips (the car being the only cd player we had!). It's hard to pick a favourite song for me, all of the songs are like your favourite pieces of clothing, well worn and very comfortable.

I initially was not excited for this album but it really grew on me.

Excelente

Also really mfing good and interesting

BANGER!!

This album stands the test of time, it sounded different from the rest on release and there’s still nothing quite like it. It mixes perfectly catchy singles like ‘clint eastwood’ and ‘19-2000’ with more experimental reflective songs like ‘M1 A1’ which builds to a full on rave. ‘Slow country’ feels like an atmospheric sibling of ‘Ghost town’.

Two days in a row where I realistically could have skipped the listen and jumped straight to the marking (yesterday being 5/5 for Different Class by Pulp). I have heard this album a lot in my life. It's a record I associate with doing Uni coursework in the spare room of the house I grew up in while trying not to lose my mind. I still listen to it every now and then and while my opinion has changed slightly, I still think its a really good listen. Del The Funky Homosapien is a big part of that. His rapping is one of the things I love most about the record, especially on Clint Eastwood which was the massive hit from this record in the UK (albeit the remix version). Also, I have said before that I'm a fan of Damon Albarn's work and I'll reiterate that here. I don't think this is without flaws through. Damon shouldn't try and sing in falsetto for a start (Man Research (Clapper)) and I think a lot of the time songs are a bit too long and meandering (I'm looking at you Double Bass). But it's still something I would happily put on to listen to. Not quite a 5 anymore to me (it would have been in 2001) and it's a spiritual 4.5, but for the purposes of this scoring system it's getting a: 4/5

You know em and love em! Not much to complain about here. A little long for my taste but otherwise a great album. 8/10

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

Fun lofi/hip hop beats and melodies that accomplish a lot while being very minimalist. A lot of underrated songs on this album. The songs with featured artists are more hit-or-miss, but the solo songs are very enjoyable. Top tracks: Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Sound Check (Gravity)

Bdb. Na 4,5. Klimacik jest.

Hell yea!!! Pick up a keyboard and create a beat Using the factory settings to make a hit … Yes!! And the cartoon band members… it works. 4.1

Great album.

Excellent-inventive and thoughtful

Hip-hopping around the genres. Excellent album by a virtual band

Pas de déceptions avec Gorillaz

Really refreshing and sounding new when landed. Although their folllow up is better this give Damon’s other band a run for its money. Rated this. 4.2/5

I actually was a bit mixed on this initially, as it was far more downtempo than I remembered, then realised it was the remixes that I heard literally everywhere that clouded my judgement (two of which were on the version of the album I listened to). :) I liked it! Got to say it is neat hearing the sound finding its feet. :)

Clint Eastwood is such a banger.

19-2000

Good album, not great, but solid. Gets old after awhile

Pretty good but definitely too long.

The opening run of this album, from the first track to “Clint Eastwood,” legit might be one of the best stretches of songs that Gorillaz have ever had. A fun time to go back to the origin point of this project and hear Albarn still work through what he even wants it to be. Most of the time it sounds great, but even the misses are interesting as What Ifs.

Almost nothing but bangers. There's a few whatevers on here but it's a powerhouse for sure.

Good beats

Very nice.

Iconic album, it’s experimental and weird but great to listen to

Demon Days is a much better album overall, and I really love Humanz, but this one is fine. It has more of a Blur sound which makes sense given the timing. And I do adore Damon Albarn so I can find the charm even in the less "finished" songs on here.

I miss Toonami.

This is way better than I thought. Maybe not completely my kind of music but it aged very well.

This album felt bold and adventurous and inspires me to be more curious in my own songwriting and not try so hard to fit into a mols or formula but to really just make something weird and unique and something I genuinely like.

This is a great album that's an instant throwback to a happy wild wide-open time -- musically and personally! Thrillingly fun tracks, with "Clint Eastwood" obviously surviving as the stand out that may well survive on radio and playlists until the end of human's time listening to tunes here on earth. Buoyant and maximally produced in a fun, fuzzy, head-bopping way. While I never fully understood the animated character concept, the vibes and beats and tunes are undeniable and awesome. Some of the deeper cuts here (which I may or may not have ever listened to!) are a little grittier and a lot weirder. Cool that this album contains multitudes, who knew!?

Always brushed this one off in their discography but it might be their most underrated (? This or Song Machine tbh) Solid 8/10

Excellent!

Ufff!

actually really damn good

Gorillaz is a band that I've known for quite a while. I think I first listened to "Clint Eastwood" about ten years ago or less. Back when I discovered them, I was really hooked to their singles, without never listening to their full albums, until I decided to do so in 2020, when I checked out "Plastic Beach", and 2024, when I listened to both "Demon Days" and this one. My first experience with this album wasn't great. I can't remember the details, but I know I got quite bored at some points. I think my experience was really tainted by how much I loved (and still love) "Demon Days", so I had big expectations for this project too. Now its time to redeem myself, as I am having quite a great time listening to this. For a debut album, it has an incredibly amount of work and creativity put behind it, blending many different styles, like rock, punk, hip hop and funk, while being trip hop at its core. It starts with a very lively pair of tracks, "Re-Hash" and "5/4", that open the album with a very happy and uplifting sound that its quickly slowed down with the very moody and desolating "Tomorrow Comes Today", which might probably be the most depressing track of the whole project. Separating this song from the biggest single of the album is "New Genius", a very chill and smooth trip hop that might not do anything too outstanding, but still very relaxing and enjoyable. Then comes "Clint Eastwood", one, if not the most, memorable song of the album. It is incredibly groovy, the choruses are very catchy and Del the Funky Homosapien's flow is fantastic. From here the album enters a section of nice and hypnotic trip-hop songs that aren't very impactful. These songs are "Man Research (Clapper)", "Sound Check (Gravity)" which sounds like a Portishead song, and "Double Bass" that has a little melody that feels like elevator music. There is also the track "Punk", and as its name implies, is a fun little Punk rock track. Following this part are the other two singles, "Rock the House" and "19-2000". The first one has Del coming back and doing another great rap performance with a nice and goofy beat behind him, and the second one is another of the most remarkable songs of the whole album. "19-2000" is incredibly fun and happy sounding thanks to its groove and cute melodies. The final four songs of the album are unfortunately some of the most forgettable material it has to offers. Not to say that there aren't interesting parts, like "Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)" being sung in Spanish or the build up intro in "M1 A1". However, they do feel quite weak in comparison with the biggest tracks. In the end, this album is very creative, offering a very fun and interesting blend of different sounds.

Discardo

The lo-fi trip hop beats are where this album excels, its dirty, gungey, and full of noughties swagger. Albarn's vocals swing from Thom Yorke-esque and melancholic, to whiny and annoying with reckless abandon, but generally I feel like it works. Surprisingly, I had actually already heard Clint Eastwood, and never realised - it was also a hit for me. If I had to associate a vibe to this album, its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graffiti dive bar, with such notable patrons as Ben10, your lesbian goth friend, and anyone who was ever on MySpace.

This is the guy that made "Song 2". I found that weird

Liked most of it . 6/10

When to listen: chill but upbeat hangs. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this. I only learned they were a virtual brand when I did the talent one-sheet for them ahead of their SNL performance... this album is cool, it's catchy. I especially liked 19-2000 and Double Bass.

A fantastic album. Gorillaz at their most raw and experimental, arguably. Back before the blueprint was written on this kind of collaborative album around a ficticious entity. Love that Damon Albarn just wanted to do something within hip-hop and funk and electronic music and gave himself a platform to do so with his favorite musicians. Legend shit.

Starshine, never gonna find me Starshine, they ain't gonna find me Der Moment in dem richtig gute Beats in meinen Indie-Rock-Pop-Kosmos kommen.

Classic gorillaz sound. Enjoyed.

❤️ I 💕 LOVE 💘 DAMON 💕 ALBARN ❤️

I thought this was pretty good

some splendid grooves, some trademark Albarn melancholy, and he's got sunshine in a bag!

Clint Eastwood was and to some extent still is inescapable…the whole album might not love up to the single but one cool intersection of triphop with britpop vibes.

While not their best album, Gorillaz debut album shows what they can do and would become. Disparate stylings from independently successful artists coming together to create magic. Each song is unique, and Clint Eastwood has survived to maintain its recognition for 25 years. I remember getting this album for Christmas when it came out. My mom bought it not realizing it has a parental advisory sticker. She was not pleased when she noticed it, but also understood that music could be provocative even if I wasn’t old enough to appreciate it, yet. It had been a mainstay in my rotation ever since.

Prefer the second album to this one.

I didn't expect to like this but I did

8/10 Will I add this album to my library: already is

Gorillaz are such a unique band. The cartoon thing seemed like a gimmick at the outset, but has turned out to be a really clever way of allowing them to incorporate a wide range of collaborators over the years to add to Albarn's obvious talent. Looking back at their first album the thing that surprises me now is how similar to Blur they sounded on a lot of tracks. That's no bad thing, but it took them until album #2 to lock down their own sound more.

just a killer vibe all the way through

Some pleasant songs

Just having fun with music... I wish it was a little more even

When I was 12, living in Rio, Clint Eastwood played everywhere. Still on the anime high, I loved the music video and watched it religiously. I'm embarrassed to admit that I never heard the album in full until this day. It's a wonderful, quirky little thing. So much talent went into this, as well as a lot of ideas sourced from so many things Albern was certainly exposed to, all used to their advantage. Never will I simply refer to Gorillaz as a simple novelty act. It's a very sophisticated multimedia act from one of the most unlikely rock frontmen from the 90s. Seems to get better with age. So glad I finally listened to the whole thing.

I actually enjoyed this album on the whole. My favorite song was, "Latin Simone (Que Pasa contigo?)

Don't really hear what's not to like. It's a great album. I am working on my bills today, and it kept me upbeat throughout. Jazzed, actually. 4 "I'm motivated happy" stars. Jeesh!

iconic album. amazing work from damon albarn as always

Amazing! It's interesting to be reminded of where they started. This still has the playfulness of "just messing around." It sounds so punk this point

So weird but cool

Oh, I have a lot of nostalgia for this fun and quirky album!

Running out of steam tonight. I liked it. I added “Clint Eastwood” to my playlist.

Better than I thought it would be. I was familiar with some of the bigger hits but I really actually enjoyed it.

Great album from start to end.

*Very diverse album with the singles being the best songs *Gets a little too experimental at time but still an awesome listen

fucking good

"If all of this was Clint Eastwood it would be a five, but it is not." That's the most honest summary of this record — a debut that contains one of the great opening statements of the 2000s and then spends the rest of its runtime operating in that track's considerable shadow. Del the Funky Homosapien rapping over that ghostly, slightly sinister groove is immediately distinctive and completely alive in a way that makes everything else work harder to match it. The groove is real across most of the record, which is ultimately what pushes this to a four. Damon Albarn assembled something genuinely eclectic here — hip-hop, dub, electronic, and indie rock blending with a lightness of touch that most genre-crossing records can't manage — and when it locks in the results are consistently enjoyable. "19-2000" has the kind of physical bass momentum that pulls you in immediately. The collaborators tend to focus and energize whichever track they're on, giving the record more personality than Albarn's more diffuse vocal approach alone would generate. The experimental detours are the cost of doing business. Some of the odder moments sit awkwardly between the stronger material, and the record occasionally disappears into its own concept rather than staying grounded in the groove that makes it work. These aren't dealbreakers — just the places where the ambition slightly outruns the execution. A genuine four — catchy, groovy, and more alive than most records attempting this kind of genre collision. Worth noting that a platform licensing dispute required switching from Amazon to Spotify mid-listen to hear the full record, which says something about the ongoing messiness of catalog rights in the streaming era.
