Some good songs, but a lot of forgettable tracks as well. I’m glad they leaned into the hip hop sound on the followup album.
This was always going to be a 5. Always. Gorillaz was so... out there. Just so out there when this album dropped. "Clint Eastwood" blew my mind with its genre bending when I first heard it. I still get a tingle every time I hear that hi-hat hit. And it's not the only banger on this album. In fact, most of the album slaps. I can't listen just once. Gorillaz always gets an instant repeat.
Tomorrow Comes Today is a great Track. Del ABSOLUTELY SOARS on Clint Eastwood. Man Research makes me feel violent (SKIP!). Del rules some more on Rock the House. LEft Hand Suzuki Method was a hard pass.
The first half of the album is solid, I always get lost in the 2nd half. Could have cut about 6 tracks and had a more coherent album (1 hour later) This album is too damn long.
A mix bag but legendary Dirty Harry
Looking forward to this. Sadly, I am now somewhat looking forward to the end. When I first properly listened to demon days I loved it. Not sure if this is because I knew 2-3, so the others were interesting change ups. But for whatever reason, this didn't hit as hard, still a different sound, but just didn't sound as good. A solid 6 as its still a very unique diverse album, just not high enjoyment
I was so depressed with this album, I mean cheer up. If they had remixed all songs like Clint Eastwood and 19-2000, would actually be quite good. But despite these two tracks, still doesn't lift it higher than a 1 as had to listen to that dross!
I bought this right when it came out. I likes Blur’s stuff and Clint Eastwood was amazing. Spent the next few weeks forcing myself through it and really trying to like it. That just didn’t happen. Too much filler that keeps it from being a good album. This is a band with an average, even if in a lot of ways unique, catalog. Along the way they’ve produced a handful of truly outstanding songs. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding

Obviously I was familiar with the song Clint Eastwood, but other than that I don’t think I recognized any. It wasn’t a bad album- it had some interesting aspects to it, however it just wasn’t anything spectacular. I’d listen again but not excitingly.
I do have to say that I very much appreciate a song in 5/4 that's just entitled "5/4" Noel Gallagher once called this band "music for 12 year olds" which is hilariously petulant and so on-point for Noel but it's mostly true. Not... that that's necessarily bad or even something I would be against. Hell I still dig listening to old Van Halen which is definitely music for 12 year old boys :P Inconsistent and laconic is what I'd call this. There's some kinda-cool stuff here beyond the forced odd time signature; e.g. "Tomorrow Comes Today" is just that - kinda cool - but is it good is what I'm asking myself with no real answer. So much of this is sort of just chill downbeat ("Sound Check") that's fine to listen to but am I ever gonna crave it? I'm never sure what the actual point is of calling this a "virtual band" or with the cartoons etc. - seems silly and/or pointless but what the hell do I care - call yourself a snowman if you want. I guess I only bring it up because it has no bearing on the music; a few guys who wanted to "hide" their identity (but not *really* so again - why). Maybe the cartoon logos are a perfect representation of the band after all - short term low-level gratification. It was fine but after listening to it I don't really remember it at all - no hooks, no instruments/instrumentation/no big soaring impact. Isn't that at least part of the point? 5/10 2 stars.

Long time gorillaz fan but never gave the debut a full listen through. The popular tracks are obviously bangers but the less known ones are also well produced catchy bops. Not perfect by any means but great listening throughout
Really solid album. It's kinda all over the place tonally, but it makes for a really relaxed and enjoyable listen.
I enjoy their biggest hit and was really looking forward to checking out their discography. I hadn't done a complete deep dive of their work until today. I am disappointed and sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping. There were a couple bright spots during the listen, but the majority of the music was not exciting enough for me. I will be re-visiting this album in the future to re-assess my initial opinion, and I will be checking out their other albums in total in the future.
This is okay. Overall, I like Gorillaz. The ones I like on this album I've worn out from years of abuse. The ones I don't like aren't my faves.
I feel like an underaged teen with an intense desire to buy cigarettes ... "you had me at 'cartoons'" Cigarettes taste like shit, make your teeth yellow and breath stink. But Joe Camel was a super cool dude. What I'm getting at here is this album isn't as good as its branding and I'm disappointed. But I have a question... If I buy all the albums and turn in Gorillaz Cash, can I get a cheap tote with an oversized logo?
After thoroughly enjoying "Gorillaz," I stalled on writing the review until the prodding came four days later in the form of Blur's "Parklife." Because Blur and Gorillaz are opposite ends of the Damon Albarn spectrum - the Blur end of gross Britpop (why couldn't anything else they did sound like "Song 2") and the Gorillaz end of genre-defying cartoon brilliance. "Gorillaz" was such a refreshing and much-needed debut when it came out in 2001. "Tank Girl" creator Jamie Hewlett's art and the musical assistance and influence of Dan the Automator and many other collaborators made Gorillaz something that had never been seen or heard before. I listened to this album a lot when it came out, and was happy it held up to my musical taste (aided by nostalgia) more than 20 years later. I've listened to Gorillaz in bits and pieces since then, and know most of their most popular songs from later albums, but I don't know any the way I know their debut. Listening to "Gorillaz" again made me want to delve back in, and the more I consider the concept, the more I adore it. The cartoon characters and their world allow us to hold up a twisted mirror to our own in a way other music can never quite manage, and now that I know there is a detailed fictional history of the band members I'm intrigued to seek out the scattered source material in addition to the albums.
Gorillaz kind of defies musical categorization and seems to pull samples and influences from lots of genres which keeps it interesting. Ultimately, that inclusion of different influences results in a sound that is much more sonically pleasing compared to Blur. But I do feel like I am missing something by not seeing the accompanying visual art that is part of the "virtual band" experience.
Rob bought this album when it came out and it always makes me think of that summer. I think we almost broke up. 🤣
I’m into some lofi and trip hop music, but this offering felt too sparse to me too often. Clint Eastwood is great and I liked the last couple songs better than the rest.

This was the first parental advisory album I ever owned. My mom was slightly worried about it, but I was so innocent at the time I thought the intro to Left Hand Suzuki method was a soda being opened.

I wanted to love this but the first few tracks were really grating to me. It picked up after a while and it was fun to listen to the album hits again. Ultimately I’d enjoy this as a one-off listen and would jam to Clint Eastwood if I heard it out and about, but it’s not something I’d return to.
It's silly how much Gorillaz I've listened to. I've been hooked on Gorillaz since I first saw Clint Eastwood on MTV and later when they won best song on the MTV Europe Music Awards with Ali G as the host. It was a silly time. Being a virtual band with distinct band members it's hard not to be intrigued. Gorillaz music is hard to define. It leans towards hip-hop but stretches to alternative rock. It's the perfect blend between Damon Albarns Blur roots and the production from Dan the Automator which the latter did the awesome collaboration Deltron 3030 with Del the funky homosapien that did the rapping on the song "Clint Eastwood" and "Rock the House". I would say that Gorillaz is in the Gorillaz genre. I've yet listened to something as diverse but still having a coherent sound. Every song is splendid and the creativity and uniqueness is the reason I still listen to Gorillaz. Their debut album is no exception even though their subsequent albums are better.
Raw. Superb harmonies and some absolutely classic vibes
It sounded calculated & precise, as if a few geniuses put this together but they lacked any soul. Some catchy parts, but otherwise sleepy and hard to feel.

Way, way, better than I thought it was going to be
I want to rate this albums 4 or a 5 because some of these songs are pretty amazing but the fact that some of this album is just annoying beats that get on your nerves for half of it just kinda ruins it and keeps it from being a great album.
This album puts down the roots of the hip hop infused alternative pop that would end up fueling more than two decades of collaboration filled, masterful albums. Certainly one of the more experimental sounding of Gorillaz’ discography, there are more loose ends here than I would like. A couple ideas definitely don’t end up going anywhere. Still a fantastic debut showing from the worlds most successful virtual band.
This doesn't quite hold up to my memory of it, but it's still a lot of fun. Best track: Clint Eastwood

Very interesting album, especially for the time. Also quite the departure from what Damon Albarn did with Blur. I really like how chill this music is, even with heavier tones.
I appreciate the Gorillaz for creating a sound all their own, but I struggle with the heavy use of loops and the sometimes annoyingly high pitched vocals.
I used to love 'Clint Eastwood' growing up, many a memory around that song. Damon Albarn has got to be one of the greatest artists of the 90's and beyond, two best bands of their areas and of their time, brilliant solo artist, he just doesnt miss. And this is where his (IMHO) better work starts with Gorillaz. Overall a great and unique album which I rate 8/10 (It's not the BEST gorillaz album).

One of my favorites from my teenage years, I have so many memories tied to this album.
Hadn't listened to much of this before... man research is something else. I think I might like Latin Simone the most. Weird.
Really a unique sound and vibe. I think it is pretty easy to enjoy for its eclectic groove. Though there are some experimental songs on the back half, the first 6 songs were pretty strong, with Clint Eastwood being very catchy. I did also like 19-2000... overall it was very interesting, but not something that i would go back to.

Not great, not terrible, not memorable.
Not as good as I remembered it being back when it came out. A couple of great songs in there, a bit mad, felt very out there for 11 year old me but in retrospect it probably wasn't as weird as all that. A lot of filler in there too. Hopefully we get the next couple of Gorillaz albums in here too, they're definitely better than this (but maybe a bit less significant?) 3/5.
There were a few classics and new tracks that I really enjoyed.
This album wasn't what I expected. Blur, techno/electronic, brit pop, alternatives, experimental mish mash. Did not expect the Spanish ballad. Liked the first half better than the second but I did the the whole thing was pretty good. Hello is anyone there?
More eclectic than I would have anticipated! Remembered the couple of radio hits, but the rest were lots of experimental and varied sounding electronic tracks. Still, kind of dull and not really something I'd put on again
Came in with Overwhelming expectations and have come away pretty whelmed, I have never listened to one of their albums and can see that other than the two hits and a couple of other songs that engaged my interest the rest wasn't to my taste. Other than the hits my favourite tracks were New Genius and Latin Simone.

So firstly hats off to Damon for going down this path, a 21st century Archies is a pretty clever idea, even if it was only to get away from Graham Coxon's drinking. In my mind no one's quite done a Weller when he busted out of The Jam to start honeymooning down by the Seine with Mick Talbot, but this comes close. Does it hold up, writing and producing with a cartoonist? Not really, it has some fine moments but it tends to drag on, about half way through I realised I was thinking about how long it would take me to sort the Xmas box recycling. 5/4 is great, but it is a Blur song song that would have walked straight into their eponymous 1997 album. Sadly it is just a bit boring.
Has it’s moments & the best couple are great - Clint Eastwood, which was the only track I was familiar with, and Rock The House. Makes sense, because I’m a fan of Del & he embellishes both tracks, which I was not aware of. Found the first half a bit ho-hum, but the backend is a lot more interesting. , although I don’t like what they do to Roadrunner - can’t see the point. Glad I finally heard it, though.
I never really liked Damon Albarn much, a few notable singles excepted. I find this piece of high concept nonsense not nearly as interesting as it reckons it is. Dan the Automator's production lends this album some interest. and Del the Funkee Homosapien is worth a listen when he appears, but this is primarily the Damon Albarn show. His unfocussed warbling just never really builds enough energy to light me up, and usually sounds out of place with the backing tracks. It just strikes me as over-hyped demos. I don't even like 'Clint Eastwood' that much. 19-2000 is OK (and the Soulchild remix even better), and I liked Double Bass (perhaps not surprisingly, an instrumental). My kids all seem to like Gorrillaz, though. I suspect that they encountered songs on video game soundtracks when they were kids, which is probably the appropriate age and context in which to experience Gorillaz.
Gorillaz was one of those bands that was everywhere when it came out, and I fucking hated it. I thought the half-anime look was stupid, I thought their music was piddle for idiots who didn't have distinctive taste, I thought the whole vibe surrounding them sucked. I also thought it was funny that Noel Gallagher said he hopes Damon Albarn gets AIDS. I still think that's funny. I still think Gorillaz is an insult to decent music and its popularity a good indication of just how retarded far too many people are. I still have no interest in this whatsoever and I'm gonna struggle to get through the whole thing. 1/5.
I didn’t like it at all, it was just senseless cafe music honestly.
I found it a little boring at times and lost my bearings every now and then. There were too many instrumentals.which didn't seem to add anything for me. This was the first time listening to this album and having only known their bangers. I thought the rest would be similar, but it completely threw me off a little. I still enjoyed certain songs and got down to it but it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. My favourite songs were the ones that had lyrics and some flow.
Gorillaz are an English "virtual band" that blends rock, hip hop, and electronica together to make a unique mashup of sound. It was created by Damon Albarn (singer of the band Blur) and comic book creator Jamie Hewlett. The band has their own "lore" which includes their own universe, back stories etc. The "virtual band" consists of singer/keyboardist, 2-D (singing voiced by Damon Albarn), bass guitarist, Murdoc (voiced by Phil Cornwell), guitar/keyboard/vocalist, Noodle (singing voiced by Miho Hatori), and drummer Russel (voiced by Remi Kabaka Jr.). Gorillaz have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Elton John, Jean-Michel Jarre, and more. I can distinctly remember when the music video for Clint Eastwood hit Much Music. I was a young teenager at the time, and the music was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Aside from their hits, though, I've never delved into their stuff too much before. I enjoyed relistening to some old hits I had forgotten about, and Clint Eastwood is an "earworm" that I'm sure to be humming for the next bit for sure. Every time I hear that song now, I immediately think of the movie Trolls. Aside from the hits though, most everything else on this album kind of fell flat with me. It is super quirky, as is most things Damon Albarn is involved with, with mostly nonsensical lyrics, and usually is heavy to the electronica side of things. The heavier rock/hip hop songs resonated more with me than the Primal Scream-esque electronic stuff. All things considered, there were about an even number of hits and misses on this album. I may revisit the hits, but can't see myself listening to the whole record cover to cover again. Favourite songs: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Rock the House, Punk, Double Bass, Re-Hash Least favourite songs: Man Research (Clapper), New Genius (Brother), Sound Check (Gravity), Starshine, M1 A1 3/5
Actually way better than I imagined, but probably the only Gorillaz album I could get into
Clint Eastwood is one of the most progressive, intellectual rap tracks I've ever heard. It stands the test of time. The lo-fi funk on the rest of this album is re-listenable. It can fill backgrounds and foregrounds. I love "Tomorrow Comes Today" as well. Solid album from the Gorilla Gang.
it's so, so wild to listen to this band in its early stages, compared to its fleshed-out form that we know it today. this was merely the execution of an early idea. there are some songs on here that are just blur songs. albarn very clearly has multiple different "modes" in his head when writing for blur, gorillaz, and in his ambient solo career. songs like 5/4 are blur mode, on a gorillaz record. songs like the culturally universal clint eastwood and tomorrow comes today are the early stages of the gorillaz mode that we know now. there's a lot of really great, lowkey tracks on this one. it's not gorillaz's best, but it is a really strong debut effort for a really cool and interesting experiment that's still running to this day.
Love this album and have done since it came out. Listening back it is noticeably an infant version of gorillaz sound with tracks like Punk having more in common with Blur than gorillaz later stuff. Interesting to listen alongside tracks like Tender on Blur’s 1999 “13” (two years earlier) to hear the transition between the two groups. Tender could easily sit on this album and fit in as much as it does on the Blur album. I like Damon’s locals on this album, they’re really sad and childlike. I hope other Gorillaz albums make it into the book as I def don’t think this is there best. But still a fave. First edition of this book came out in 2005 so some of gorillaz best stuff might not make it. This album has some really danceable tracks that are just good fun, ultimately I love gorillaz for the sense of weird fantasy storytelling which I don’t think is present on this album as much. So still a 5. Top track: probably tomorrow comes today. I also love Man Research.

Yeah it's Gorillaz innit. Not my fave album they've ever done though. Some of it kind of grated on me, lots of it was a bop. Deserves to be in the 1001 but I probably wouldn't listen to it more than once a year.

This is a solid debut album from Gorillaz. This came out when I was in high school, so it does have a place in my consciousness and I definitely like the majority of the album. Very interesting mix of genres and strong songwriting. I'm a fan for sure. Standout Tracks: Re-Hash, 5/4, Clint Eastwood, Punk, Rock the House, 19-2000 (and Soulchild Remix version), M1 A1

Gorillaz’ debut album was a vehicle for Damon Albarn to break out of his Britpop legacy and embrace whatever he wanted. As such this album contains elements of trip hop, hip hop, psychedelia, and more all thrown together. The result is an idiosyncratic album that simultaneously feels groundbreaking and familiar at the same time. The disguise of Gorillaz allowed this music to break out of genre altogether. The album suffers due to its length and its unevenness, but is still a landmark album making a very important point about the music industry.

По сути своей, это идеальный альбом для меня - он слушается очень легко и быстро, буквально каждый трек западает в душу и остаётся там навсегда сразу после первого прослушивания, но... мне чего-то не хватило. Даже переслушав второй раз мне трудно сказать, чего именно. И эта неуловимая недостающая часть не даёт мне покоя уже второй день, ибо, как я сказал, альбом должен быть идеальным, но увы. Может после сотого прослушивания я по-настоящему оценю этот альбом. Но даже несмотря на это, я всё равно готов очень высоко оценить этот альбом из-за дерзких экспериментов типа удивительно гармоничной смеси хип-хопа и альтернативы, выставление на передний план басс-гитары и довольно абстрактных текстов, хотя может быть я просто обращал на них недостаточно внимания. (8 - 8.5)

Oh man, childhood. It's been so, so long. Old heads will hate this, probably complaining that it's all electronic and the beeps and boops aren't that interesting to listen to. You're more than welcome to hold that opinion, much like how I hold that Neil Young isn't Good or Interesting. The entire album is endlessly creative, especially for the early 2000's. Damon and Jamie are ruthlessly interesting with novel hooks, beats, and sounds, creating whatever the hell they like and making it all sound good. Such a phenomenal album, such a great debut. Love.

It's really good, but also clearly a 40 year old white man's hip hop/reggae based midlife crisis. Gets an extra point just because of the Ed Case remix tapped on the end.

Thought it was okay, with some classics mixed in. Very troubled listening to it though and I want to explain why below. I have this weird deep rooted association with Damon Albarn (maybe just his voice? I dunno) and 1) Brexit gammons or 2) Uni students from places like Bournemouth who bounce into lectures wearing absolutely battered webs that smell like damp. On freshers week they go “lads lads lads” and drink shit beer and still wear those same smelly webs. No matter the weather. I don’t know what it is - maybe it’s the amount of proper British style adverts some Blur songs have been used on during my childhood or something, but the association is there and I can’t do anything about it. I realise this is a massively unfair way to judge an album/artist and he’s no doubt very talented so I’ve gone with a 3 I’m so FUCKING WOKE AND CAN DO WHAT I WANT. (Disclaimer that I still think Dare and Stylo are top, top tier despite what I’ve just said above.) All said and done - 3 stars. We move on. Let’s not dwell.
Only listened to their singles and they are decent but not really into this album. Difficult to score feel a 3 is too generous.
I’ve only really listened to singles from Gorillaz and Plastic Beach which is another boss album. I proper enjoyed this one. Even Clint Eastwood which is a song I’ve not heard for years was just so much better when listening intentionally and not just in the radio. Damon Albarn is fucking boss

I listen to this album a lot when it came out. I think I liked it better then. There’s a lot of noodling going on and at times it does wear on and on. I think I actually went to see them in concert at the time but not a lot of that is memorable. I like ’em enough but I don’t really feel I want to put the album on again for awhile.
This is the debut album by English alternative rock & virtual band Gorillaz. The virtual band idea was spawned from a friendship between musician Damon Albarn and comic book creator Jamie Hewlett in 1997. The music from Gorillaz is primarily alt rock and hip hop or trip hop, but it has inspiration from many different genres including lo-fi, dub, art pop, punk rock, rap rock, Britpop, and Latin. This album performed well critically & commercially, reaching top 3 on UK charts & top 15 on US charts. Due to the success of the album the Guinness Book of World Records awarded Gorillaz with the title of the "Most Successful Virtual Band". I like a good amount of Gorillaz' music, but I had never heard their first album in its entirety until now. It was good vibes all around and I'm sure their other albums are just as amazing.

I only ever knew the song Clint Eastwood. It’s a one-hit wonder I’ll jam to, but I never sought this kind of music out. It’s not for me. If we’re talking bands represented by cartoon avatars then it’s Prozzäk or bust, baby! (If you don’t know them and you’re not Canadian, look them up!)

i forgot how much i listened to this album when it came out. this is possibly the second best character played by all bran, after the africa express one, that character is still one of my favourites, it's like something straight off fonejacker. anyway, yeah this album is really good, the second one was a bit arse and you only ever hear the shaun ryder one on the radio which is a bit of a joke, but such is advertised radio.
Shagged the night away to this one. Oh boy. So much cum. A major vaginal discharge. All of the above is false.

Half of this sounds like late era-Blur cast offs and half sounds like it is produced by Dan The Automator...funny that.
I thought this wa svery good, but a bit too long for my taste. The last 2 remixes are completely useless and they drag the album down a little. But yeah, their sound was really interesting and somewhat innovative when that first album came out. They would do even better with the following one, Demon Days.
I'm not a big fan of what they do, but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Also, it's too long.

I really like this Gorillaz, might be my favorite. The grooves and vibes are beautifully crafted and it's an overall very pleasant album to listen to.

Funny that, after so many years, this first Gorillaz outing sounds like Blur b-sides.

I remember when this came out, people went crazy over it, Clint Eastwood was playing all the time. Looking at it now, that is probably one of the weakest tracks. There’s so mischievous interesting stuff on here, like Double Bass and M1 A1. The music feels experimental but at the same time nostalgic. I can’t give this a 5, because with the later stuff, especially Demon Days, it’s obvious that Damon Albarn was capable of taking this music so much further.

I remember how groundbreaking Gorillaz were when they came out. I get the hype, but I wouldn't go back to this. I guess it's just not my cup of tea and I've heard the singles so many times. With that said, it still deserves at least 4 stars.

I want to give this 5 stars because Clint Eastwood is so good, but in all honesty, 50% of this album feels like filler. Still, the highs are super high on this and Del tha Funky Homosapien deserves major props for his work here.

A friend recently called us, saying they have two tickets to Gorillaz that they can't use. It was only then that I realized I only liked one Gorillaz song. The rest of it is good design. I owned this one, always tuned out after Clint Eastwood. Sounds great, but there's nothing for me after that.
Wow, despite the fact that this tore through my university like norovirus on a cruise ship, I forgot just how absolutely fucking boring this trope is. The diametric opposite of what I consider to be good music.
I'm listening to it now, so we'll see... but I'm going to go ahead and assume it's a 2 star affair based off of the likelihood that "Clint Eastwood" is the best song here, so that I can catch up and see what the next record is. I can say with certainty though that after two songs I definitely prefer the Monkees to Gorillaz.
At this point I cannot remember if I ever listened to this one in full back in the day, I do remember the hype and the smashing hits but no the full album. Weird. It was an instant classic although I feel it is just too long. Still brings good memories back you know?

I've listened to Demon Days before, and I though that album was fairly interesting, but I think I like this album more. There's a lot of various in the music, but it always seems to work really well with Damon's voice. This album also deserves a lot of credit for being the first album by a virtual band (at least that I know of, I'm sure someone attempted it before and no one cared). It's a cool idea but it would be meaningless if the music didn't grab you. Lots of credit to Gorillaz for making really fun music that also has a lot of substance to it 4/5

Brought back memories of trying to download this on Napster over dial up... ‘Clint Eastwood’ is still a standout banger. Still get a kick out of the whole ‘art project’ vibe they started here: the animated personas, the episodic nature of the music videos, cut & paste of samples and beats.
Really enjoyed going back to this. Clearly made for the joy of making music, agreeably lo-fi. Better to come from Gorillaz mind. And they are brilliant live right now.
A 'virtual' band in 2001 - the whole Gorillaz package was innovative, just see the music videos! As a standalone album, i don't think it's their very best music (Plastic Beach is my fav) - but this is where it all started, and still has some absolute TUNES on it.
Always really liked the singles off this but realise now it was the remixes I liked - someone else gave them a bit of something that the original versions were missing. Didn't really listen to the album, more inoffensive background music that kept me plodding.... it is a plodder

This record is the sound of the new Millennium. It's the sound of countless hours spent on Gorillaz' homepage in the early era of the internet. It's the sound of being so proud of writing a guitar riff in 5/4 time that you name the fucking song '5/4'. The first half of the album is so damn strong. On 'Tomorrow Comes Today' Albarn announces his follow-up plan to fronting one of the most succesful Groups of the 90's - just do it all over again in the new Millennium. This time standing on the shoulder of hiphop and triphop groups of the previous decade. Closing remarks: '19-2000' is far superior in the Soulchild remix version, and a special shoutout to Damon's hopeless flute playing on 'Rock Da House'.
There was an entire year during the early years of high school where I didn't listen to anything but this and Demon Days. And while Demon Days still receives heavy rotation I don't listen to Gorillaz half as often as I used to. 2001 is quite late for Albarn to dive head first into trip hop. But the once leader of the past decades most prominent british music genre nevertheless resurfaces as strong as ever and ready to spearhead music for many years to come. There's the obvious classics: "Tomorrow Comes Today", "Clint Eastwood", "Rock the House" and "19-2000" (the far superior Soulchild remix is unfortunately only available on the deluxe edition). And while later Gorillaz records further developed the sound of this record, songs like "New Genius (Brother)", "Sound Check (Gravity)" and "Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)" passes any Gorillaz vibe check. The inclusion of the "Clint Eastwood" remix as the last track almost made this a 3 / 5. But the absolute insanity of being so proud of your own ability to write a riff in 5/4 that you name the song just that.. Well if that alone doesn't deserve a 4 nothing does.

I'm excited to finally hear this popular cartoon band, and I'm not disappointed. It's fresh and unique, an elegant mix of hip-hop and rock. It's not hip-hop and rock in the same way as the exploding nu metal scene of their time with bands like Linkin Park, and definitely not the earlier hard rocking sound of RATM. Unlike those, Gorillaz are chill and carefree, without much angst. And of course it doesn't end there, they also explored more territories such as electronic and punk. As a whole, it's a compelling album with many surprises, albeit inconsistent. On my way to listen to "Demon Days".

Learning new things everyday with this experiment. I had never listened to blur before the 1001 album exploration, and while familiar with Gorillaz (my kids dig 'em), I had zero idea that Albarn was the creative force behind the band. So yeah, I dug this album, though I wasn't really able to home in on the details (we all listened to it in the car on the way to Dayton this weekend). I'm going to investigate the band further for sure, I think the concept of a virtual band itself is such a funky idea, and I liked what I heard, though I did feel like it played on longer than necessary.
I like Blur and hip-hop and dub. In fact, I like all the elements that go into Gorillaz. And what's more, I want to like Gorillaz. They seem cool. But damn, I can't bring myself to like Gorillaz. This album is so dreary and bland. And for a guy who knows how to write amazing hooks (Albarn) they are all but missing from this entire album. Yeah, "Clint Eastwood" is fine, but the rest ranges from boring to annoying. I couldn't wait for this thing to end.

Well, I guess 13 is my lucky number since this is the 13th album I got here. Not the first time I'm listening to it. I love everything Damon Albarn - from Blur to Gorillaz. And this Gorillaz album is no exception. Re-Hash - introduces you to the fun Gorillaz-specific beat and has an almost optimistic note to it. It signals that the album is gonna sound catchy from the start. Absolutely love the work on vocals here, specifically during the "It's the money or stop" part; the way Damon ends it with "It's yeah" is simple, but it seals the deal for me. 5 / 4 - probs my favorite song in 5 / 4 time. The way Damon uses his voice here to enhance the simple lyrics is perfect. The “ She made me kill myself” part is just *a chef’s kiss* Tomorrow comes today - nice use of harmonica, a more moody, slower song. Definitely interesting, and shows the versatility of this album’s sound New Genius (Brother) & Sound Check (Gravity)- these 2 go a bit hand in hand for me and probs are my least favorite of the album, sure they still have their purpose, and even the “Dj-ing” sounds have their place here Clint Eastwood - classic. A well-balanced sound, between Damon’s melodic verse and Teren’s rap. And the beat is just perfect. Man Research (Clapper) - fun little song Punk - symbolically mixed at places with “digital” sounds Double bass - feels like an interlude for the second part of the album While I think the first half of this album is definitely stronger, I still have here some highlights: Starshine, 19-2000 All in all, not a perfect album, but still a great one. A 4 / 5 in my book.

One of my most listened to albums of all time. I wore this CD out in Middle School/High School, had a giant 2D poster on my wall (it was about the size of the entire wall), played the geep driving game, and worshiped the Gorillaz lore like it was gospel. I may be a bit bias on this one is what I'm saying.
This is a great album. I thought going into it I'd give it a solid 4/5 but after listening and really thinking about it I think a 3 is fair. These some great classic tracks on this that bring back a lot memories. But also a lot of "eh skippable" tracks. Demon Days is a 5/5 for me but the self titled album hasn't aged as good.
A lot of chill songs by the end and great beats at the start. Some songs that took a while to pick up but ended up being pretty good.
I was looking forward to this when it came up but it turns out it's mostly weird garbage with a couple of good songs thrown in the mix.

From reading about this album I learned that the composer of one of my favorite movie soundtracks (Ravenous) was a member of Gorillaz! Cool! This album is very close to a 5 for me.
This one is really a mixed bag with a variety of styles across the album which are all performed convincingly but still feel like they have common threads. My appreciation of the tracks also varies wildly. Punk and M1 A1 were absolutely atrocious punk songs, Sound Check on the other hand was a great, chill trip hop song. Clint Eastwood is a pretty cool classic and I also enjoyed the Soulchild remix of 19-2000 a lot. In general, this is not an album I'd revisit, but I like the concept and applaud the musical flexibility.
I liked this album, there were a few cuts I was unfamiliar with that I really enjoyed and will go back to. With that said, there was a lot of tracks I didn't like all that much that I felt dragged the project down. I'm thinking a strong 6/10.

Fuck it, good for them, I guess. Really couldn’t get into this album. I’ve got an attachment to tomorrow comes today bc I have a memory attached to it, but frankly the rest of the album annoyed me. Oh well. — Today was a typical Monday. Had some really frustrating computer issues that will hopefully get fixed tomorrow. Landscape architecture class was a bit of a fight to get through bc my professor is a bit of a pain, but at least the class is easy. Oh well. No class in the AM, so I’ll have some extra time to maybe squeeze in a workout finally. <3

I mean, this album is a phenomenal debut. Although I grew up on Demon Dayz, I can see a version of myself considering this to be one of the most iconic albums ever.

That being said, I didn't think it was anything special and unless I’m missing something it doesn’t belong in the same conversation as the last few we heard so I’m a little confused with it’s place on this list. Wasn't surprised on looking up to see this has gone from the book, it's a fine, decent indie dance genre-hip-trip-hopping album but 20 years later (eek) I don't exactly think of it as earth changing. We are also slap bang in the era of too-long albums from bands who feel they must squeeze all the space out of a CD. Not many of these tracks are what I'd consider essential, either. There's a couple of surprises though, the smokey Latin Simone saunters in towards the end and steals the show for me. I have no memory of this at the time. 19-2000 holds up well. Slow Country was nice. The band was a fun gimmick, giving Jamie Hewlett a paycheck after Tank Girl, which is nice. The Clint Eastwood remix at the end is, and always was, hella annoying.

I think that Demon Days and Plastic Beach took what this album did and perfected it so a part of me thinks they should be included instead, but I also understand that maybe the s/t was included because it was first and therefore had the impact of being the album that introduced Gorillaz. It's still a killer album and Clint Eastwood is undoubtedly a classic track.

Album of my childhood. The beat to 19-2000 will never cease to bring up nice memories of summer, and especially FIFA games. Singing (and rapping) parts of Clint Eastwood is an essential part of every get-together with my friends. Sound of Re-hash, when starting the vinyl puts me into a great humour straight away. This is one of those rare fully positive albums (melody, not necessarily the lyrics), that I really love. Definitely 5/5, only Demon Days would be rated higher in my humble opinion.

If I am remembering right, these guys are like our last group, you don't know what they really look like they are just animated but this was a fun synth, groovy lofi hip hop type album.

Reading the Apple Music description for this one taught me that Damon Albarn was in Blur, a band we've also had on the list. I can confidently say I prefer his Gorillaz stuff. A virtual ape band way before those godawful NFTs became a thing. It's hard to argue with albums like this, lots of variety and cool beats/songs. "19-2000" made me laugh, seems like something you'd dub over that video of Lebron reacting to the worst beat you've ever heard. And I recognized "Clint Eastwood" as well, that had to be their first big breakthrough. I say "they" even though they aren't really even real. In short I dig it! Favorite tracks: Clint Eastwood, Re-Hash, Man Research, Sound Check, M1A1, 19-2000. Album art: Very cool. Committing to the Gorillaz art style immediately. Reminds me of the warthog from Halo, but the dudes in the car are cool as hell. And the graffiti font is great too. It's a good kind of simple. 4/5

Heard before: yes Really enjoyable revisiting this one. When it’s great, it’s perfect. When it’s bad, it’s at worst inoffensive - and even then, the grooves make it perfect for music to listen to while working, exercising or cooking. Favourite tracks: Rock the House, Clint Eastwood (Del tha Funky Homosapien!), Latin Simone, 19-2000 Least favourite tracks: no dislikes really, some tracks a little too repetitive
Have this album on vinyl already so I'll listen to it on that. Gorillaz are one of my favorite acts and I already know this album is 5/5!
2001 - 64 mins. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are the hits. First few were ok, clint and 19-2000 weren't as good as I remembered. Didn't like falsetto, couple cringe songs. Towards the end 4 skips in a row. 1.5/5

Interesting album. I imagined Gorillaz to be way less experimental. Lots of interesting songs on this album. A little dull in parts but a good listen .
Slappers: Clint Eastwood feels like it has just always been around, like I've known it my whole life. Guitar on 5/4 is so crunchy and i love the synth tones. Sound Check has an insane mixture of vocals, beats, lyrics, whatever. No reason it should work and it's amazing somehow. Rock the House is dope, and I kinda forgot about it. Crappers: Double Bass is just aight. Has all the insane variety of Sound Check but doesn't congeal for me. 19-2000 is so fucking good but I think has been co-opted by various commercials and video games in my brain. Vibe: This album is kind of all over the place, but it's better than I remember, and the good stuff is really, really good.

You know how when you think you like a band well enough based on their hits, then when you actually listen to an album you’re like… “what is this?” This was like that for me. I was not expecting such psychedelic vibes in so many of the songs. Mostly not my cup of tea, but Clint Eastwood will always be a classic.
Chill
Good and unique sounds make this album as interesting as it is creative. On first listen it seemed disorganized and as if the songs would drag on to add more listening time for the album. I found it easier to appreciate the chill and calming nature of this album when I realized the Gorillaz were aiming to create vibes with their music, not to artificially add substance. The flow of the album is mostly good, however, I feel like a few of the songs are out of place and do not fit the theme of the album. Overall the Gorillaz successfully combined genres of rock and rap with inclusions of samples, to spice up their well produced electronic beats.
Tracks: Tomorrow comes today Clint Eastwood 19-2000 Seems like a slow burner, the chill vibes flow through but some of the grooves definitely haven’t aged well, like an early 2000s time capsule. Love the fusion of many different styles, just doesn’t grab my attention with any songs except the bops. Could grow with more listens though!
Inexplicably I have always liked Gorillaz and yet I can’t explain why. I enjoyed the album. A couple of the tracks were really good, some just enjoyable so I’m in a scoring dilemma.......
