Yeah they sing well together, but its kinda dated.. Is this what folk music was like in the 60s? I understand it was impactful at the time, but it doesn't hit the same nearly 60 years later. Most of these songs are forgettable... Silent Night is yawn. Best Track: Scarborough Fair / Canticle

There's not much here apart from the obvious. Patterns is WEIRD. The Dylan pastiche was just odd. Warblers.
2/5. There is some beautiful imagery and poetic writing but it doesn't always translate well into song. Not many I would repeat listen but none of it was bad. Maybe reading the lyric sheet would prove more enjoyable. Short enough to not be tiresome but that's not always a good thing. Definitely a path where Paul Simon was a poet.

Heavenly voices, undoubtedly. Lush harmonies and beautifully performed and recorded instrumentation. I've heard many of these, so I knew what to expect. There's a medieval choral music element to a lot of the vocal arrangements that is a bit off-putting if you aren't into that sound, which I'm not. Paul Simon also always seems like there's a winking attitude to his music I can never get past. Not smug or sarcastic, but too cutesy-clever. Cloying. It's fine, but not my thing. Much like the previous album, it's a mercifully short listen. So that's good.
Like the Emily Dickinson poems they allude to, a bit too light and airy for my taste.
This album really doesn't do a lot for me. It just feels like two guys trying to continue forward in this flowery, boring folk-pop music while Dylan has already released "Highway 61 Revisited" a year before and "Blonde on Blonde" three months earlier. I know it's not fair necessarily to compare this album to those two, since they're not trying to do the same thing but it feels relevant that those albums still feel vital and timeless to me, while this one feels like it's going through the motions. They aren't on the forefront of anything. I think Paul Simon is a good songwriter but I just don't find the folk music on this album very engaging. Even the hits like 'Homeward Bound' and 'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)' just feel dated and cheesy to me now. Even the track 'A Simple Desultory Philippic', which I included as a standout feels like a lazy exercise in trying to write a Dylanesque song. Scarborough Fair is a beautiful song. I just don't think I'm a huge folk person. Good thing I had a lot of coffee this morning because listening to this and Nico is making me sleepy! The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) sounds like Babe Rainbow. Weird that Silent Night is on this, but I do like the news section over it.

Not my favorite of theirs, but it does seem to consolidate all of the S&G songs that I've kind of always found the least interesting.

If Medievil Times theme restaurant had a soundtrack, this would be it. Its got all the things: canticles; jangly sounds of Robin Hood prancing through the forest; whimsy; nature; herbs. And the album cover! PS in a puffy shirt looking like he is about to invite AG to check out his Cask of Amontillado, AG time travelling from the '80s with acid wash jeans and looking like he is about to blink SOS in Morse code. 10/10 for Homeward Bound and credit for Scarborough Fair being whatever it is and calling out 4 separate herbs. Everything else 0/10 -- proves the 60s were mostly stupid and self-important. The 7oclock news Silent Night and bob dylan Robert McNamara must be SNL protest song parodies. Homeward Bound though...a good jam.

It's never been a love affair and it'll never become anything between S&G and myself. You can hear on this album how Paul Simon is a gifted songwriter and lyricist. And while I appreciate his craft, these albums are just not for me. On album 1 they started off folk. Album 2 became a bit rockier Album 3 (this one) is a bit more poetic, Album 4 is a bit more psychedelic Album 5 was a kitsch monstrosity. I've had 4 of them now in this list. Hopefully this was the last one.

Yeah- this isn't for me. I can see why other people like the folky and well constructed songs. But i find the lyric and style grates a little after a while. Enjoyed Homeward bound though. 2/5

I'm biased as I know these guys to be a couple of jerks. My mother-in-law went to school with them. Also, what Paul Simon did in his musical appropriation from Los Lobos and South African artists is criminal. He basically stole their music, recorded some vocals over it and called it his own. So, yeah, screw these guys. Peter, Paul, and Mary are 5x better. That said, this is a collection of catchy, sensitive songs that take on a whole new meaning knowing the sinister natures of these two.

not that great, basic folk 60s
I did not do much on Friday between laundry, work, and getting ready to head to Taos. At work I listened to a company meeting about virus treatment which was pretty interesting. During this meeting I learned that CRB did in fact contribute to the development of the CoVID vaccine for Pfizer and Moderna. I also worked on coordination at the penthouse for process piping and talked through finishes at the lyo with Kevin, Stacie and Vidula. This album was not given much attention by me, although I will say my favorite song was probably Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine.
Didn’t love it and didn’t hate it. Couple of ‘nice’ songs but wouldn’t purposefully put them on.

when i saw the folk tag i was dreading this because i really do not like folk music. but when the first song started i was like oh! it might be nice! then the rest of the album played. i could not care less about this type of music and i don't understand why anyone would. i'm so sorry the only track that made me feel some semblance of emotion was the last one, but even then it felt kind of heavy-handed. thank the heavens that this was short, unlike some other folk albums i've listened to and similarly disliked fave track: scarborough fair / canticle

I can’t take this soft shit, I love Joanna Newsom, Cat Stevens, especially Dylan. But this is at points too earnest and at other times a parody of itself. It’s commercial but it’s fighting to not be, maybe? This sucks!

As a reviewer said previously, there's only vanilla here, no parsely, sage, rosemary OR thyme. I just don't really like S&G, not solo, not together. Despite the 28 minute runtime, I just couldn't get through to it.
Christ, how I hate Simon & Garfunkel, this was why I became a punk (in my teens) in the first place. Luckily, it didn't last more than 28 minutes. Plain, dull pretentious and sugar coated folk, yuk! 1/5

Picture the most insufferable characters in a Woody Allen movie from the '70s. This was their favorite album. Listen, I try to be open-minded. I don't want to judge albums by their covers, or even by the songs I've heard before and disliked. I'm open to the possibility that I'll be surprised. Hey, I didn't even hate Bookends! But this album is proof that you can do all that and still have your presumptions reinforced. It starts with the cover, easily one of the wussiest in the history of pop music, and continues to the songs, which also earn that title. I'm not anti-folk. There's just something so acutely annoying about "The 59th Street Bridge Song," for instance, that turns me into John Belushi smashing the guitar in Animal House. The lyrics frequently come across as annoyingly self-satisfied (the nadir being "A Simple Desultory Philippic"), but are annoying in general. Ugh, and the ham-handed social commentary of "Silent Night" with news reports to close? The worst.
I can with this type of stuff. In my head I just see pretentious white dudes in the corner of a coffee shop singing this with the air that they’ve tapped into some really deep meaning. But no.

This is the 185th album I’m rating. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme that is a Lana Del Rey rhyme. Adding to my Playlist - Cloudy, Homeward Bound, The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine, The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall, and A Simple Desultory Philippic (or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission). Not Adding to my Playlist - Scarborough Fair/Canticle, Patterns, The Dangling Conversation, For Emily, Whenever I may Find Her, A Poem on the Underground Wall, and 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night. 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night - I prefer the version with Fiona Apple. All in all I liked 6/12 songs. Not as bad as I thought it would be based off of how much I disliked Graceland.
I think I prefer the herbs over the album. This is a bit limp-wristed. Best song was the Dylan pastiche "A Simple Desultory Phillippic" (whatever that means). I'm just not an S&G guy. Unfortunately we are bound to see more from the duo on the list and I hope they are better records. These 2 herbivores get 1.48 stars for this one.

I found this album very boring. Not sure why I got two Simon and Garfunkel albums in two weeks. Their themes just are not for me. 7 O'Clock News is hardly even a song. I know there's political themes, but I'm not listening to them for the political themes, I'm listening to music because I want to hear music.
Not a fan of sixties music generally and nothing here to change my mind. Sounds like songs kids would sing at school. Nothing offensive, nothing particularly interesting.

Most of this sounds like glorified Renaissance Faire music. There's one song that sounds like Bob Dylan (and even name checks him near the end sort of) and the album ends with Silent Night but as a protest song? I don't know, I didn't like this.

This was corny boots, top to bottom. I don’t care when something was made, I cannot abide songs about “grooviness”. And I know they thought they really did something with that 7 O’clock news/silent night song but I’d have to disagree. This was going to get a very generous 2 until the Bob Dylan shit in A Simple Desultory Philippic. Even if it was making fun of him it needed to be meaner for me to be on board by that point.

Sappy, soft singing and ultra-gentle instrumentation, tedious lyrics. I cannot see the appeal. The only tracks which stood out were A Simple Desultory Phillippic, a simple and out-of-place Dylan parody, almost a comedy song; A Poem on the Underground Wall; and the final 7 o'clock News/ Silent Night, which was a bit like a teenage art student's first "deep" song. I agree with the idea, didn't like the presentation. One star. A bit harsh but I honestly don't want to listen to any more Simon and Garfunkel after this.

Not more Simon & Garfunkel!!!! I find it hard to find any enthusiasm to listen to any of Simon & Garfunkel work. The music is slow, passive and boring. Just really hard music for me to listen to. The lyrics seem interesting but I tend to fall asleep around the first line. The title alone while telling didn't prepare me for so much softness.
Considered giving 2 stars because I didn't mind the last song but I will not give credit for playing news audio under a Silent Night cover.

It's a perfectly pleasant listen, but shit it's got to be one of the most boring listens we have had. A compilation of highly forgettable tunes that never offer enough to pull you in. Self important, bloated, and pretentious, but also somehow trite and pat, even Feeling Groovy which should have been a light hearted and whimsical little tune sounds like an inauthentic drag, it's no wonder they were the laughing stock of the notoriously snooty NY folk seen for a while, they should have remained so.

Dissapointed in this. Only knew Scarborough fair and wasn't a fan but was hoping there'd be a few other gems in here as I've heard a few good Simon and Garfunkle songs over the years. The song with Dylan was the standout.
I like Paul SImon's songwriting and the harmonies on some of their other stuff, but this is mostly shit. Fucking Scarborough Fair, fucking Silent Night.

Didn't dig this at all. I'm a child of the 80's and have a VERY eclectic taste in music, but I just found this to sounded somewhat pretentious, bland and generally uninteresting to listen to.
Sorry, maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood but I found myself losing the will to live while listening to this. I’m sure it was good in it’s day while lying in tall grass and tripping out on lsd and wondering why we can’t all just get along. My wife liked the harmonies, I didn’t really.
