Reviews (page 5 of 13)
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - Stevie Wonder is a musical genius! This album has some great tracks, headlined by Superstitious, but also some slower more maudlin light listening. Still overall a classic of Stevie’s imperial era. 4⭐️
Was a good album, I think my expectations were a bit too high here, I expected it to knock my socks off. It was an enjoyable experience, but no 5 stars here.
I'd say this is right up there with his other three. Most popular releases, creating a good 4 album run of basically music that literally everyone on earth can enjoy- songs in the key of life. Innervisions, fulfillingness and talking book
Peak
Crazy musicianship. Lovely production
Pretty good, a bit inconsistent
I've heard plenty of Stevie Wonder, but not nearly enough of a consistent album. Hearing how this album vibed really made Superstitious shine even more as a banger track.
I think Songs in the Key Of Life is the best Stevie Wonder album, but Talking Book maybe a close second. Stevie Wonder’s output during this period is on an almost otherworldly plane - just completely sublime.
Not as coherent as an album as his masterpiece, more a series of killer singles, but still top-shelf stuff
superstition hit, great vocals throughout. love songs up front and funky in the back half
80s R&B really wouldn't exist without him. What seems commonplace now was new back then. Stevie was breaking a lot of new ground, and "Talking Book" sounds like that transition between love songs and the deeper topics he'd cover in his later works. Whatever he threw on the wall definitely stuck! (3.5-4)
Maybe Your Body might be the heaviest Stevie wonder song I’ve ever heard and it’s awesome.
The piano parts are amazing, the production of album and the voice is beautiful
stevie most wonderful album
After the opening classic ran a little slow for me surprisingly, up until the amazing Superstition. Second half I liked better and closed strong with I Believe
I'll be the first to say it: lotta duds on here! I love Stevie and need to be clear I enjoyed the album as a whole, but I would argue about half these songs are skippable, which is a shame because the ones that hit, hit. Superstition is an obvious banger. The standout hit I hadn't heard before is Maybe Your Baby though. The funky bass and synth lines go so hard and it just sucked me right in. Luckily the album also ends on a high note with I Believe. It's below Innervisions in his catalog for me, but Stevie rarely misses.
Quite enjoyed this album overall. Favorite Track - Superstition Least Favorite Track - You and I ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A few absolutely classic Stevie Wonder tracks. Great production given the age of the album. Just misses a 5 from me as few songs didn't hit the mark.
Enjoyed this. Great mix. Interesting blend of styles. Would listen again.
Very good Stevie album 🗣️
This was such an epic album. I mean Superstitious?!?
Superstition this superstition that, make some noise for YOU AND I !!!!! I think that is the highlight of this album. No one does it like Stevie.
i mean it’s good, but it’s my least favourite wonder’s album
Tu es le soleil de ma vie
This is a fantastic record of Stevie’s. The sounds, grooves and sounds are great. Goes down very easy.
Love Stevie Wonder. Superstition got me nostalgic.
As blind as a bat, huh
Whenever I listen to one of Stevie Wonder's albums from the 70's I think damn...why haven't I spent more time listening to this? This is an excellent album, not my favorite of his, but just really good. The singles are great but Big Brother for me especially stands out.
Lovely stuff 4
Not my favourite Stevie album but was still super smoothe and nice
Some of his other music is better, but Superstition is a classic. I'll bump it up one star for that.
Very cool album. Neat to hear funk/soul experimentation with the emerging electronic/synth instruments of the day. The list of instruments Wonder plays on this album is really interesting: Hohner Clavinet (synthesizer that uses rubber band sounds), drums, Moog bass (foot-operated analog synthesizer ), harmonica, piano, harpsichord, T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer (quote Wikipedia: the largest, multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world), Fender Rhodes (electric piano). The percussion and backing vocal work on 'You Are the Sunshine Of My Life' saves it from being just another an overly saccharine love song. Fun texture. The clavinet on 'Maybe Your Baby' is very cool. Not sure that song justifies a 7 minute run time though. The last few minutes get repetitive - or maybe the vocals just need to be toned down a bit so the instrumentals can shine. I thought I was hearing a theremin on 'You and I' but that's the TONTO synthesizer. 'Superstition' is an absolute jam as everyone knows. 'Big Brother' kinda' goes hard for something that chill. The more I listen to this the more it's clearly about experimenting with the instruments and vocal techniques. I'm down. Very cool. Not a big fan of love songs and this album has way too many but if that's Wonder's thing (or maybe it's just the genre) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Classic era Stevie. A good mix of funky grooves and soulful slow jams, it's not his most indispensable, but it's still a gem. Superstition is the top track, but all of them have a feeling of completion and care about them to me. 4.5 stars
You are the sunshine of my life - 4 Maybe your baby - 3 You and i - 3 Tuesday heartbreak - 3 You've got it bad girl - 3 Superstition - 5 Big brother - 4 Blame it on the sun - 3 Lookin' for another pure love - 3 I believe (when i fall in love it will be forever) - 3
This is basically a 3 star album that has Superstition on it but like… it has Superstition on it
Great album! 4 stars specifically for Superstition!!
7 - GOOD
An album that started and ended very well, with Superstition in the middle - one of his very best. A few other songs though didn't live up to the same quality, therefore it gets a 4. Still very good, just not his best work.
steven wonderful does it again
I mean, I don't think you can NOT like Stevie Wonder.
Top to bottom a fantastic album that will receive repeat listens. 4/5
I can see where Michael Jackson took inspiration from
Superbly crafted, not really my thing though.
Album 24/1001. Listened 3/30/2026. This one is timeless. Not necessarily my favorite genre, but godDAMN that man is one hell of a musician.
Unique Stevie Wonder right here The album cover tells a lot about the type of music you're about to hear You've got it bad girl was amazing! But you and I was even better... Loved the part about answered prayers in the last song Yearning album
I could’ve given this 3 Innervisions and Key of Life is probably enough for the sake of this list
Not his best by any means, but a pleasant listen to Mr Wonder as always. Superstition was the big hit, needless to say!
Quite funky and jazzy which I loved. Not the exact type of Stevie Wonder I especially enjoy but still some fantastic finds on this album. The overall feel is very consistent and interesting with some more sentimental tracks compared to other projects of his.
Best so far, Superstition definitely a slap. Still not my genre though
It's good, it's great -- but as an album it lacks that something fantastic that made Songs in the Key of Life so amazing.
good
fav songs: you are the sunshine of my life tuesday heartbreak superstition blame it on the sun sweet, funky, pocketed 75/100
•standouts: you are the sunshine of my life, superstition, big brother, blame it on the sun •runners up: you and i, tuesday heartbreak •favorite: blame it on the sun
Mysigt med Wonder
Några odödliga bangers helt klart men tro inte att du får en femma bara för att du är blind!
First time listening to this the whole way through. You can’t beat Stevie. So many jams. I heard someone say that their favorite bass player is Stevie’s left hand, and I think I agree.
Amazing keyboard sounds, I want to plug an organ into a wah pedal and wail for 45 minutes. Even the syrupy songs (and there are several) go alright.
What stands out are the vocal harmonies. Not winning harmonies but more jazzy. And there's the funky groove. and the synth gimmick line on Superstition...
I loved this album, more than I anticipated; his singing is phenomenal.
This album is a bit frustrating to rate. I prefer the funk to the ballads. Superstition is here, and it's the greatest of Stevie's songs to me. I Believe is up there too. But there are a lot of sappy ballads here that are just too slow and boring. Too many to be able to give this a 5.
3.5, a few great hits. Fun to move to.
4.5 stars Thoroughly impressed. Beyond the songwriting and vocals, which are tremendous - what stood out most was the architecture of the album. The arrangements, the bold production choices, the early synth work (that Moog is the MVP for me), and the sheer confidence of a 23-year-old essentially building this world himself. It sounds live and dimensional, yet experimental and forward-thinking. The darker, groove-driven material resonated most with me, but even the lighter love songs are crafted with care and discipline. Ballsy decisions, sophisticated execution, and a record that absolutely earns its reputation. Favorite tracks: Superstition, Big Brother, I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)
4.5
8.0/10 Liked this one quite a bit.. super funky
A really good album, I liked You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, Maybe Your Baby, You And I, Tuesday Heartbreak and You've Got It Bad Girl the most.
Owned. Excellent grooves
Can’t go wrong with Stevie Wonder. Great music.
This is not as good as Stevies best work, but it's still damn good.
yeah
Lite å utsette på dette.
Superstition is an absolute banger of a song and just for that one song, this album cannot get anything below a 3. The other songs are also quite good, though not nearly as good as Superstition. This reminds me a lot of A Night At The Opera by Queens, in the sense that there's one MASSIVE banger, and a pretty okay rest of the album.
I just listened to Talking Book by Stevie Wonder, and as I usually do, I tried to read a bit about the historical context beforehand, to understand where the artist was in his life and career at that moment. That context made the experience even richer. From what I learned, this album marks the beginning of Stevie’s transition from the image of “Little Stevie Wonder” into a fully mature, self-defined adult artist. You can hear that transformation happening in real time. There’s a new level of emotional depth, confidence, and artistic control. I really enjoyed the album. Stevie Wonder is, of course, a brilliant vocalist, but there’s one moment in particular that completely stopped me in my tracks, You and I. Listening to that performance gave me goosebumps. His voice, the intimacy of the recording, the tenderness of the lyrics, and his masterful piano playing all come together in a way that feels almost unreal. It’s one of the most impressive vocal performances I’ve ever heard. For me, it’s a perfect song, I genuinely can’t find a flaw in it. Other highlights I saved were You Are the Sunshine of My Life, which is effortlessly warm and timeless, Tuesday Heartbreak, Blame It on the Sun, and especially I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever). That last one completely lodged itself in my mind. I finished the album over an hour ago, and it’s still playing in my head on repeat. It’s the kind of song that marks you, that stays with you whether you want it to or not. Overall, I really loved the album. I don’t think I’d give it five stars, though, and that’s simply because some of the tracks in the middle didn’t resonate with me as strongly. The contrast was very clear, the songs I loved, I absolutely loved, and the ones I didn’t connect with left me a bit cold. Because of that, I don’t feel comfortable calling it perfect. But four stars is still a great rating. It’s an excellent album, and more than that, it feels like witnessing an artist stepping into his full power.
what he's looking at?
It's Stevie
really nice; 4 stars for me; don't see myself going back to it as much as songs in the key of life though
SUPERSTITIOUS
Superstition is one of my all time favorite songs!!
Stevie Wonder makes pretty consistent music, and this album is no different. His voice, the soul, funk and rock music, it all usually works one way or another.
Circling around two monumentous hits, this album is full of thoughtful lyricism and ambitious overall songwriting. The lyrics are honest and bare, all the while working in some worldy observations about society as well. "Superstition" by and large outshines the vast majority of the material here, but that doesn't mean that the songs are bad, it's just hard to top one of the greatest songs ever written, ha. Oh yeah he was only 21 years old... damn.
This was of course amazing, but probably not as good as his trio of perfect works
Makeeta soulia joka musatyylissä mitä Wonder lähtee soittamaan. Funkia löytyy rytmeistä mutta myös kitaroista, mitä soittimia osa onkaan, syntikoita?
Really great album, Stevie Wonderbis great at relaxing you and making your day feel better no matter what.
(acknowledging my biases) TWO STEVIE WONDER ALBUMS IN ONE WEEK????? LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!?!?!?!? Wonder is the one of the greatest to ever do it and this ablum is no exception. I think he strays slightly from his strengths here but nothing is bad. Not to be too glib but Superstition may have given this album a whole star. 4/5
Favorite Tracks: Superstition, Tuesday Heartbreak
Great album with some really groovy deep cuts
A very solid album from a soul funky master, the keyboard arrangements elevates even the more meandering songs, an enjoyable listen with some highlights, including an obvious one.
Not Stevie's best but that puts it ahead of most other music still. The highs on this are astronomical and the pure joy that fills You Are The Sunshine of My Life is a wonderful way to begin an album but it trails off a bit until Superstition starts a solid run to the end. Playlist track: Superstition
Prima album, zou zo weer luisteren
Great album
Before there was Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life, there was 1972s Talking Book widely regarded as the start of his classic run - he is just 22 here. You Are the Sunshine of my Life opens up the album and Superstition is here, but there are hidden gems such as Blame it on the Sun, which finds Wonder at his most introspective. On this album, I tend to prefer the ballads with the warm arrangements to the funkier stuff (Superstition notwithstanding). Not sure I'd go the full 5 but is pretty good stuff.
Highlights: You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, You And I, Tuesday Heartbreak, Superstition, I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever) Lowlights: ----------------------------------------------------------------- As much as I enjoyed this, I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. Don't know why, maybe it's just a bit too mellow for me. I still got tons of enjoyment out of this album and am looking forward to the other Stevie Wonder albums that show up, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed that I didn't absolutely love everything here.
Good selection of soul with superstition doing the heavy lifting. Maybe your baby an underrated pick.
Another brilliant album from Stevie Wonder. A real mixed bag of styles and ideas. This one has been added to my collection for repeat listening. 4 stars. Fave track - superstition.
I don't like 70s soul or love songs but I still enjoyed this album. Superstitious, You and I, and Big Brother are lightning in a bottle (even if Big Brother has some stupid lyrics). The
Vraiment sympa, chill et agréable mais c'est pas all time non plus
Super
4/5
Not as good as “Songs in the Key of Love” but better than most bands at their best
"Hey....you the muthafucka that be doing Stevie Wonder?!? That shit ain't funny, muthafucka! Don't you never let me see you do that shit again. I'll FUCK you up. Stevie Wonder is a musical genius!" It's good....'Superstition' is an all-time banger, natch. But this album is not as good as Songs in the Key of Life or Innervisions.
HIs voice is so smooth and enjoyable, I have not listened to a ton of Stevie Wonder but I very much enjoyed this album.
Listening to this makes me feel happy and like sunshine.
Moog bass is friggin rad
A genius of a musician who gets better every time he lets the funk out.
Like many great artists, Wonder is able to impress me, even when it’s not a genre I prefer. Very good album, especially from “Superstition” on.
Good stuff.
8/10
Tykkäsin levystä Stevien ääni on pehmeä ja sielukas. Levyn johtotähtenä oli tietysti hitti ”Superstitious” ja siinä Stevie soittaa puhaltimia lukuunottamatta kaikki instrumentit. Rumpalointi on aivan mahtavaa!
Stand-out tracks: You Are The Sunshine Of My Life - love the jazzy chord progressions You And I - that combination of the piano and the theremin-like sound of the synth is magical You've Got It Bad Girl - more jazz chords, I like Superstition - the brass instrumentals carry this one Blame It On The Sun - a slower more melancholic track similar in tone to You And I (even the piano and synth combo) Lookin' For Another Love I'm really impressed by this album. There is a lot to like here, especially as a fan of jazz and piano, quite a few tracks stand out to me. I love how diverse the album feels and how varied the instruments are, from a harmonica on one track, to ethereal synths on the next. That said, there certainly are a few tracks that I'm not as impressed with, mainly because they overstay their welcome. I'm not the biggest fan of tracks being unecessarily long and repeating the same sort of theme to the point where it gets tiring. Those kind of tracks I would gladly skip on a relisten. Because of this, I feel more inclined to say the album was great rather than amazing.
Yeah brother I can see this one being good
Blame it on the sun is sooooo good
Klasični stevie
Classic
When Stevie talks, listen.
Good stuff, many of these songs have already made it to my liked songs, but hearing the album back to back made me love them even more.
Not my favourite Stevie album but definitely an inclusion of the 'classic era' and obviously Superstition is a bop and a half.
2 Stevie Wonder albums in a row! Thought he'd died or something, but glad he's still kickin it. This was great, better than yesterday's, Superstition is still a jam
A little forgettable, saved by the smasher Superstition and to a lesser extent Sunshine of my life. If you're a fan of Jack White check out his cover of the latter
superstition is one of the best songs of all time, obviously. album is beautiful and sweet, a little slow for me but a great album nontheless
Amazing combination of music and vocals. 4/5
love it love it love it
I appreciate having a much shorter Stevie Wonder album this time. I loved this! A few made me really emotional, and the popular songs really fit into the album well rather than standing out.
Glad to have listened to this finally!!
Listened to this while finishing preparing for my masters' thesis seminar, great flow and vibe, definitely need to listen to this more accurately but what a good way to start this journey!
Enjoyable listen. Maybe Your Baby got a little redundant on my second listen. It put me in a good mood listening to it though.
Overall Rating - 3.85/5 (7.70/10). Another banger of an album from one of the greats.
The problem with Stevie Wonder for projects like this is that he made so damn many great albums. Each has a hit or three, each is just so much better than most other albums, but he has something like 30 albums. For me, this one is certainly top 5, and likely not 5. I'll hold "Songs in the Key of Life" for #1. Influence 5. Quality 4. Intangibles 3. Hits 4. What are we talking about here? This is Stevie. 5.
One of the best parts of listening to Stevie Wonder is that it’s undoubtedly Stevie Wonder. Sure his music stylings change over time but you always know it’s him. This album contains two all timers: “Superstition” and “You Are The Sunshine of My Life”. Both would be hits even if they came out today.
Yeah I dig a Stevie album.
7/10
So far up my street it’s insane I’ve never expanded my Stevland listening beyond the hits until now.
Do i give this stars or something
I'd love to hear Tracy Chapman do a cover of 'Big Brother.' The clavinet would transpose well to fingerstyle guitar and their voices are similar. I was also really wanting to hear a heavy guitar riff to come in before the chorus of 'I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)' just like 'Live And Let Die' by Wings. Still a wonderful song though, and not everything needs to be a power ballad.
Wow we get this guy a lot and he's still really good
Undeniable excellence, with restraint and confidence. If Superstition was the only good track it would still be an all time classic.
smooth, silky, a timeless artist I haven't properly introduced myself to. Will be listening to more after this album
it was so good
really liked blame it on the sun. nice vibey songs
You and I, wow. what a song. truly loved this album, a solid 4/5. Stevie wonder has an f ing amazing voice.
That’s what I’m talking about!
opening track was nice love the guitar on the second song superstition is the best song
I like the vibes it's chill and kinda waiting room. There are a lot of vocalists on the first song are all of them like this? Stevie Wonder is a guy not a band right? I like that this is a side to 70s music I haven't really encountered this is so funky. Woah this is groovy I'm really rocking with this. His vocals are pure class. Some tracks are quite out there which I believe is a very interesting to hear and I'm sure they were quite trailblazing for their time but they're not hitting for me. This is just really enjoyable to listen to, like the lyrics vocals production it's all music to my ears (lol) but no it's actually just very pleasant but still interesting like I don't know what's happening but I'm still picking up what he's putting down. The way his vocals match up with the instruments is so interesting I'm really enjoying this. I can see why Superstition is so famous. Stick it to the man Stevie Wonder. I really liked this album. Favourite: Maybe Your Baby Least favourite: You And I
No. 64 This album gets an immediate star for having Superstition on it. Stone cold classic track. The rest of the album is a masterclass in funk and R&B.
My words could not do Stevie Wonder's astonishing skill in every area of music-making justice. This album is for all the keyboard enthusiasts. Hohner Clavinet rules!
Lisää Stevie Wonderia ja miksipä ei. Biisilistalta löytyi kaksi tuttua kappaletta ; Superstition sekä High Fidelity-leffan lopussa soiva I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever). Kaiken kaikkiaan hyvin tasalaatuinen julkaisu.
relaxed vocals, this blue, jazz style really suits him.
Hard not to love some Stevie. This one’s more sad Stevie and less funky Stevie, but any album with ‘Superstition’ is a great album in my books.
A great Stevie album- two of my favourite Stevie songs are on here- superstition and I believe when I fall in love.
Cool
Great hearing Stevie start to find his style. Can hear the Jazz influence, but in a good way.
As well as the songs I already knew, I really appreciated this. A great accompaniment to a sunny post-christmas lazy day.
Ну Стиви Уандер
It's hard to not be down with Stevie Wonder and the incredible melodies found on this album. While it may go on for a little bit too long, Maybe Your Baby puts you into this funk/soul trance. Other songs on here feel more like ballads than funk, but Stevie's voice effortlessly fits both. And Superstition of course is in a class of its own. That riff never gets old.
While it might not be my favorite Stevie Wonder album, it's still a Stevie Wonder album and a great one at that. Beautiful melodies throughout. Really thoughtful lyrics on some. Just a wonderful blend of genres and songs. Favorite Songs: You and I, Superstition, Big Brother, I Believe
First 5 songs are slow and lyric, 6-7 have some energy and drive, 8 is pure pain probably blues, 9 sad song about breakup, great bkground song, 10 - give some hope Probably album about broken heart, get it in the right moment.
I liked it.
Ugh I love Stevie Wonder, and this album didn't disappoint. I'd argue that its probably not his best album but its definitely still a great album and still massively enjoyable. 10/10 listening experience.
not my niche but i genuinely loved branching out. x
Stevie Wonder is so goated. Superstition is my stand out track (obviously). Not my favorite version of Stevie but it’s still amazing
Stevie Wonder is always a joy to listen to, he’s always just having so much fun and it’s infectious!
"Blame It On The Sun" is worth listening to the whole album.
Beautiful voice and rhythm.
Favourite Tracks: 2,3,7
Infectiously musical. Some of the songs are bangers (Superstition id God tier) but some of that Stevie-Wonderness that is musicality rather than music.
Yknow, you kinda forget there’s more albums other than Key of Life.
Snowy grey sky afternoon. This is the type of album I really wish I was listening to on a warm day with a joint in my hand and nothing to do. I will be revisiting. Favorite songs are maybe your baby, and you are the sunshine of my life. That one rlly sparked something in me I love love. Actual rating is like a 4.5
genius
On any particular day, the “best” Stevie Wonder album could switch between each of the 4 or 5 he released between 1972 and 1976. It’s a run of quality albums that is all but unparalleled in rock/pop history. Talking Book has been my No.1 on occasion, but these days it is regularly outshone by one or two of the other options. There are guests, but in the main, Stevie plays practically everything, and writes and sings and produces too; clearly an inspiration to Prince on his debut album later in the decade. Everything you want from Stevland is here; it’s obviously soulful but it’s outrageously funky with elements of rock, pop and jazz. And he totally nails everything. A master at work, this probably deserves 5 ⭐️, but I’m very stingy with my 5s so I’ll reserve that for a couple of his other albums that I know are also in the book.
Excellent album. Superstition is one of the greatest funky riffs ever
You are the Sunshine of my Life: 6/10, I've listened to this album before and i find this song to be very calming, the keyboard with the drums really adds the dreamy aspect of having a spouse in your 50's in the 1960's. Maybe your Baby: 2/10 I think bro made some other plans, i do enjoy the bass guitar and electric guitar and how they compliment each other. After 2:55, it becomes too repetitive to enjoy because it sounds like a disc skipping. You and I: 4/10, i enjoy the keyboard and the echo in his voice, its really reminding me of a love scene in a late 80's love movie when they go through like a flashback or the end credit music. Tuesday Heartbreak: 7/10, very funky. i feel this song would do well in a 79' movie about love, then breakup. i wish all love/breakup songs were like this now, because its actually heartfelt instead of "gonna f her up rap". this song made me feel happy, but in like a blues way You've Got It Bad Girl: 8/10, the keyboard with the other instruments really shows the high of the song and what its about unlike some of his other songs. Superstition: 10/10, this song is quite overplayed, but i haven't listened to it in a while so its on top until i get annoyed with it. its really "neown neown yay" sounding and i like that Big Brother: 6/10, it definitely reminds me of when i used to watch curious george in my old cottage, and its definitely giving me tarzan vibes, but the og tarzan. Blame It On The Sun: 10/10. no words for this one. its just amazing to the point of i cant explain this feeling, other than being free. Lookin For Another Pure Love: 3/10, its too repetitive, if there was no singing in this id feel like i was ascending. i would give it a 2 but i like the music. I Believe: 9/10, this has a very chill "the smiths vibe" to it. this song also sounds like it should be in a background of an 80's movie love scene or a stupid part in one of adam sandlers old movies from the 90's-2000's.
Nice
Wow. Folks talk about Songs In The Key Of Life, but this... outstanding. Certainly need to do an artist dive now and nit rely in the best of...
Such a wonderful album. From the funkier tracks to the smooth soul cuts, I loved almost every minute of it. I was truly hooked on track 2 when that warbling instrumental started. By the end of the rich and soulful track 9, I was sold on the greatness of this record.
3.5/5
Superstition is so good it gets the album a four stars virtually by itself. The horn arrangement is mind blowing. The funk of the bass/keyboard riff is extraordinary and pretty weird if you listen to the tone of it. The first and last songs, Big Brother and Maybe Your Baby are good, but a lot of it falls into the category of inoffensive but meh. This is another album I own on vinyl that I never revisit so I enjoyed this. I bought it at the same time as Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life and I go to those more.
4/5 - This is the exact mix of overly earnest sweetness and funk that I'd expect from Stevie Wonder. Definitely some filler here, but I enjoyed this, and any album with Superstition on it has to be on the list.
Love love love superstition but the rest of the songs were just fairly standard funky tunes. Still enjoyable though. Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song- superstitious Least fav- you got it bad girl
Superstition, sunshine Awesome Some other good Some meh
Her va det jammen mange sanger æ ikke visste at æ hadde et forhold til! Veldig fint!
I had actually never listened to this album before even though I knew some of the key tracks on it. It's good and rewards multiple listens, the mood shifts a little throughout and Superstition makes the rest of the album sound "less than" just because it's so above it all, but it has a strong start and each song has something worth listening even if sometimes the tunes feel like they lose themselves there's always a sound, a bit, a lyric worth returning to.
You are the sunshine of my life ☀️ superstition 🔮 classics
Needs another listen from me. Superstition is flat out unbelievable. Some other songs are forgettable. But overall, I enjoyed the album quite a bit.
Thoroughly Stevie Wonder. Been a fan of his music for most of my life but have only been really exposed to compilations of his greatest hits. Nice to hear some of his classics in the context of their original album.
Passion, smooth and sultry, and bops. Good stuff all around
Two huge Stevie hits... Sunshine of My Life and Superstition. I wasn't really familiar with the rest but I also liked You and I, Blame it On the Sun, and I Believe. He's kind of all over the place stylistically but it's always Stevie and his amazing smooth voice.
I really love the three hits on this album. The rest was a little meandering for my taste, but it's still Stevie. I love his voice and his vibe, and it's hard not to enjoy him singing.
Stevie Wonder isn't normally an artist I'd gravitate towards, but my younger brother is a big fan. Growing up in the seventies, he managed the Soul and R&B side of our record collection, while my tastes were more aligned with Rock and Blues. Consequently, I've heard this album countless times! "Talking Book" opens with the sentimental, smooth track "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," but I much prefer the more abrasive, funky cuts, such as "Maybe Your Baby" and the stand-out, superb track, "Superstition", or even the folky "Big Brother". The entire album possesses that classic 70s Stevie Wonder sound. Expertly written, arranged, performed, and produced. "Talking Book" is a mighty fine record, and I can appreciate why, for some, it's considered an essential album. For me, it registers as a very good four-star effort, though not one I'd ever personally own or listen to regularly. Side one 1 "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" (4/5) 2 "Maybe Your Baby" (5/5) 3 "You and I (We Can Conquer the World)" (4/5) 4 "Tuesday Heartbreak" (4/5) 5 "You've Got It Bad Girl" (3/5) Side two 1 "Superstition" (5/5) 2 "Big Brother" (5/5) 3 "Blame It on the Sun" (3/5) 4 "Lookin' for Another Pure Love" (3/5) 5 "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)" (4/5) Total - 40 Average - 4 167/1001 92/167 albums reviewed were new to me.
23/11/2025 Classic Stevie, classic album. Spotify listeners: 21.2 million
Such a great album! This was Stevie Wonder's 15th album...he was 22 years old when he released it. Unbelievable - he's a true genius. Really enjoyed the exceptional musicianship throughout and the cutting edge use of keyboards and synthesizers. The funkier, up tempo songs are more to my personal taste but I even appreciated the slower songs - composition and musicianship throughout the album are just so excellent.
Had an enjoyable time with this.
Great album lots of good hits
Feel-good music.
One of my favorite Stevie albums. It's not his absolute best, but it's right up there. Top tracks: You Are the Sunshine In My Life Maybe Your Baby Tuesday Heartbreak Superstition. Just a great album. 3.5 / 5 stars
It’s a classic Stevie Wonder album but not his best. I forgot how many songs I knew that were on this album. It’s too early in day to say too much more lol
This album gets an immediate star for having Superstition on it. Stone cold classic track. The rest of the album is a masterclass in funk, soul and R&B.
Not quite as amazing as I expected. The latter tracks were more repetitive than expected. Still, tons of great funk.
Not the strongest album from Stevie, but still great. Both highlight tracks from the two distinct styles on the album are fantastic. "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and "Superstition" are the best here, while the others simply delight on a more subdued level.
Some great hits here
Great Stevie Wonder including Superstition
Swore this is a dupe. Anyway it’s great. Not much more to say about Stevie wonder.
Way too groovy, absolutely loved this album
Class.
Not my favorite from Stevie Wonder, but still pretty good. Of the albums on this list, it would probably be third behind Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions. Some of the songs felt a little light on Stevie himself, and the album dragged a little in places. "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life," "Tuesday Heartbreak," "Superstition," and "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" were the best songs. While this album was overall good, not great, good from Stevie Wonder is still better than the greatest output of many other artists.
It has Superstition on it. That alone gets it a high score. Stevie is one of the greatest funk and soul artists to have lived and this album is a wonderful trip.
Classical
Dig it, but not enough to go out of way for it
It's Stevie Wonder...duh.
Everyone needs a little cheesy in their lives! In general, it's a lovely, easy listening album. Stevie's voice is pure butter. Superstition is of course the number one banger, but I also loved Blame it on the Sun. It starts out meh, and then BAMMM a nice little beat shows up. Believe is magnificent, I automatically started doing the slow side step and pumping my arms.
I was looking forward to this one. Sunny weather coupled with a Stevie Wonder album; you can't go wrong with that. The album started off an a high (You are the sunshine of my life). Seriously, the first 10 seconds of that track told me this was a good 'un. The next few tracks after that were good. I liked Tuesday Heartbreak especially. Maybe because it's Tuesday as I write this. There's layers of funky instrumentation on this. Pure funk guitar, a mischievious bassline, organs, guitar playing out of this world...musically it is a feast. I must admit I got fatigued with the album by the second half. The songs are noticeably weaker and I did grow restless at points. The exception being the last track of the album, where it ends with a high on "I believe (when I fall in love it will be forever). Overall, this was a delight to listen to. I think I still prefer the Innvervisions album, but this one is still excellent.
En af verdens bedste sangskrivere, lækre instrumentaler, og en unmatched vokal, no notes ✨4,5 stjerner hvis jeg kunne, det her album er lidt mere kommercielt end hans andre
7/10
"You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" i "Superstition" to znane bangery z tego albumu, ale "Blame It On The Sun", "I Believe" czy parę innych kawałków to też kawał fajnej muzyki.
Solid album. Starts and ends strong
I refer to my earlier reviews of funk and soul albums - I adore Stevie Wonder when he's being upbeat and funky, and don't have too much time for the slower numbers. Still, it's Stevie Wonder, so I'm not sure I can physically bring myself to rate it below four stars.
Classics.
This is not the best Stevie album, but his discography is so lacked with classic that it doesn't mean much. The first song is just such an amazing love song, so warm and sincere. A bit on the poppier side compared to the rest of the album but that doesn't mean it's not amazing. The 2nd song is much funkier by comparison, with a unique groove and a very animated vocal performance. You and I is very smooth but probably the least exciting song here. Tuesday Heartbreak is another lovely song, dripping with passion and emotion. The big hit Superstition is obviously amazing and absolutely impossible to dislike. Stellar chord progression, absolutely amazing instrumentation full of life and personality and such a catchy chorus. So good. Big Brother, Blame It On The Sun and Lookin For Another Pure Love are solid songs but don't bring much to the album imo. However, I do really like the strong progression and vocal performance of the closer. This is a really essential Stevie Wonder album and conttributes to his amazing early-to-mid 70s 5 album run greatly.
sick clavinet
“Steve, you know this is an album not a talking book.” Malcom Cecil (executive producer) is rumored to have stated in reference to the numerous tracks they were trying to choose from when putting together this album. I mention the quote because it highlights Stevie Wonder’s passion for music. He communicated through songs and spent many hours in the studio creating and experimenting with new sounds. This passion really comes through in his music, especially once he was given more creative freedom as he was from this album and then moving forward. Wonder was a genius with respect to his instrumentation and production approaches, so it is always fun to read about how his albums were produced. Like many of his records, Wonder played most of the instruments, with some assistance from others, on this record. Impressive, but what is important about this is that the records had to be layered back together later, and Wonder along with his producers did this in a way that created a more richly textured sound that almost all R&B or pop at the time. In particular, listen to the layering of the three distinctly different sounding keyboards: the Hohner Clavinet, Electric Piano and Moog Synthesizer. If you are not familiar with how these instruments sound, do yourself a favor and look it up. They are featured pretty widely in songs from this time period and remember this was a period where is was all analog, so the unique sounds we can produce on computers today were only possible through the use of different instruments. Cool stuff. Anyhow, Talking Book was a joy to listen to. Personally, I prefer the funky jams over his more soulful tunes, but this is just personal taste. Wonder’s talents are evident from start to finish. Talking Book was Wonder’s first to hit Billboard Album Top 5, but then his next 7 albums would make the list too. A pretty impressive run.
"maybe your baby" was much more adjacent to Funkadelic than I ever thought Stevie could get. "You and I" has some very unconventional vocal treatment (sounds like its in a claustrophobic chamber with the right ear tracking slightly before the left, leaving behind a wavering echo). Sounds like the same Moog synthesizer that Mort Garson used for "Mother Earth's Plantasia" Crushing vocals from Stevie as he mourns some sort of lost relationship- "I only pray that I have shown you a brighter day, because that's all that I am living for, you see" Superstition is an obvious highlight, with the clavinet lead as a nice departure from the keys and moog synth of the previous songs. Lookin' For Another Pure Love is produced magnificently- you can hear every detail of the drum stick's hit of the ride cymbal, the detail of pick on string from the guitar (panned assymetrically to the left) and Stevie's silky smooth vocal delivery. The guitar run at 3:10 is otherworldly. I believe when I fall in love it will be forever is a wonderful album closer. Stevie rocks the vocal improv lines right at the end as expected.
I wasn’t that into this album when the b listened to it before. This time, on its own it’s a nice vibe. I just think that, even with “Superstition” on it, there’s not as many bangers in it as, say, Innervisions, or Songs In The Key Of Life. But I enjoyed it! 3.5 stars.
Didn't like this as much as Songs in the Key of Life, but still pretty good. Some of the songs are too long. Superstition is the best. I have a soft spot for I Believe When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever, because of its use at the end of the movie High Fidelity.
Classic! Great hits, and I found a new earworm, "I Believe."
I believe I spoiled this one for myself a bit by listening to Fulfillingness's First Finale years earlier, so I got into Stevie Wonder's sound in a different order from the way the rest of the world discovered him. Talking Book is just as good, although it seems as though he was creating templates for himself here that he'd continue to exploit for a while. Nonetheless, this one's full of warm, heartfelt funk & soul that can't help but be pleasant! My top tracks are the immortal 'Superstition' and album closer 'I Believe'.
STEVIEEEEEEE
Que álbum divertido! Muito Groove e Técnico. QoA Adonis New.
Stevie Wonder definitely engaged me more this time round. It wasn't just the oomph of 'Superstition'. I'm still not entirely sold on him, and I we haven't had 'Songs in the Key of Life' yet, so the jury is not out. However, there we catchy melodies, and a decent vocal performance. I listened actively. 4 Stars.
This album is like waking up on a warm Sunday morning knowing that you have nothing to do with the day ahead. You stay in bed for longer than you normally would, dozing in and out of sleep. You'll get up and have a cup of coffee soon, but there is no rush.
Mmm... I prefer the more up-tempo numbers and this was going to get a '3' but then Jeff Beck appeared and he's always worth a +1 so 4/5 it is. Some of the ballads drag.
This album was perfect for me today. Walking in to the office, bracing myself for a chaotic Monday at work, and to hear the soothing voice of Stevie bringing me back to the things in life that really matter.
Songwriting, singing and production all pretty superb. A very easy voice to listen to. A very strong 4 stars.
What a sound - arguably his second best album
I am calling it a 4 as a placeholder, undeniably great but not entirely in my wheelhouse which is stopping it being a 5
Not my everyday jam, but this album re-shaped R&B. Superstition may be one of my favorite tracks of all time—that bassline moog is next level. Would I listen to again? Probably
Love how the "later Stevie sound" kicks in in this album. With Superstition as absolute banger. the other songs did not really grab me.
I really thought this was pretty good…I was familiar with both of the hits, and have always really liked Superstition. I thought the second track rambled on a bit too long, but really liked the last song. At the end of the day, this one gets four stars from me. I will definitely want to listen to this one some more.
One of Wonders best albums with 4 top songs.
Even though the album gets overshadowed by Superstition, I think Stevie's performance and charisma on this album were quite refreshing in contrast to other things I've been listening to.
I really really liked this. He can write a love song that isn't corny. Going to have to dive more into his discography after this
There's nobody like Stevie Wonder
Third Stevie album since I started this project a few months ago. Like I get it. Stevie’s one of the best. Can we get some more jazz please?!!
My only real criticism of this album is that Songs in the Key of Life is better, and that's not exactly harsh. This is classic Stevie, and a hell of an album.
great as always
good
Some catchy hooks and good vocals.. expected from a Stevie wonder album
Sitting at the foggy dock at 7 in the morning and all the hunting dogs barking in the distance seem to match the beat of You Are The Sunshine Of My Life like they heard Stevie's call
listened to again a perfect album
Not my favorite of the classic period or top 2 but still a fanstastic album
Enjoyed this more than Songs in the Key of Life.
Solid - even the deep cuts were good for a listen
Bipolar album all about extremes. The high ideal of effortless love and the reality of heartbreak. My favorite thing about Wonder is that when he sings, which is often, it sounds like he’s smiling. It’s difficult to feel any negativity when listening to him sing. “I Believe” is the kind of thing I’d play when I’m holding a boom box outside my girlfriend’s house.
My only complaint is that a few of the songs are a bit repetitive and could’ve had a minute shaved off. Besides that, this was a very enjoyable listen.
On my wedding anniversary. An album saturated with so much love, getting soppy listening to it. Lots of classics, lots of beautiful vocal. Slightly over sweet at times but was okay with that today.
Wow what a fabulous album. I even didn't scroll down to see that Superstitious was on it so when it came on I genuinely got excited. Such an interesting sound, like a mixture of jazz and creating this new kind of funk. I've been a believer that Stevie Wonder legitimately has one of the best voices of all time. Really fun front to back
Probably a 7 for me as a few of the songs are a little too saccharine. I Believe has got just the right balance, I'd forgotten about the song, so was nice to hear it again and return it to my playlist.
Not my favourite of Stevie’s early/mid 70s work as it’s a little too twee in places, but it a solid album I’ve listened to many times over the years.
This album is really good. So much fun! So funky and Stevie is obviously a great singer! Other than "Superstition" this song lacks a "top song" to push it to a 5 star album. Actual rating...4.5 Liked Songs: "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" , "Maybe Your Baby" , "You And I" , "Tuesday Heartbreak" , "You've Got It Bad Girl" , "Superstition" , "Big Brother"
Funky and fun!
Can’t go wrong with stevie, great listen.
Otro discazo del primo de mj. Quizá no mi favorito, pero maravilloso.
Great stuff. Close to a 5 but not
Shifts between mellow and upbeat, but always feels bright, warm and funky.
Another great album. Not quite up to the standard of his other 70s output though!
Good album, worth the listen just for superstition
acho que dos que apareceram aqui do wonder até agr esse é o menos absurdo e ainda é excelente!!
o último do homem fortíssimo hein, não decepciona. nunca tinha escutado ele direito e agora eu gosto bastante!!
Love love love. Iñnervisions is still my fave. So will give this a high 4.
This was a fun listen because while I knew the two big songs on the album, I had not listened to the bulk of it before. My favorite of the other songs was You and I
Similar to many other so far, this is an album with one timeless classic that I'd never really listened to as an album. Stevie is an artist (I had this same reaction to EWF) that I prefer as "fast and funky" rather than "slow and sentimental" but there were a few surprises in here that I really liked. In particular Lookin for Another Pure Love - had a suspicion when he said "play it Jeff" but confirmed that the solo and overall cool guitar work were indeed Jeff Beck. Loved the social commentary on Big Brother and lyrically how it was a break from the mostly love-oriented lyrics on the rest of the album. I will say that even on the slow songs though - the chord voicings are often interesting and atypical and evidence of his musical genius. Overall, maybe not quite his apex yet, but very very good.
Good
8/10
Classics "Superstition" and "I Believe" (awesome), mixed about 50-50 with boring ballads.
I've never given Stevie Wonder a fair shake other than Songs in the Key of Life (which is very, very good). This album was still quite good, but highlights both his strengths and weaknesses. Strengths being his funk and R&B grooves, and weaknesses being the schmaltzy gushy balladry. The ballads aren't inherently bad, they're just too sweet and saccharine. But the funk on this album makes up for it. I mean, look, it has Superstition on it. That's all you really need.
Great album 4/5
4.0 - Eine tolle Reise, die von Anfang bis Ende Spaß macht! Highlights: Let's Stay Together, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?
All timer
Bit of a vibe here from Mr. Wonder
A funky ball of tits. Superstition is one of those all time greats.
Stevie is great!
Really great album Strong 8
What an album. Def not better than songs in the key of life but still amazing work by one of the best singer songwriters of all time and the fact that he’s blind is insane to me still. His voice is nothing short of perfection and all the different uses of keyboard is insanely awesome. Fav Track: You are the sunshine of my life Least fav: blame it on the sun
Stevie Wonder is so incredibly talented. There are some good songs on here besides Superstition, which is just a great song. Overall, it is nice to listen to and I can understand why this was popular. I wish they had leaned more into the funk and less into the pop/"easy" listening though.
Liked it a lot. The problem I have with most dunk albums is how similar songs sound throughout. This album feels very individual throughout every song. Each is very interesting and well thought out. Superstition is an all timer.
Really enjoyed this. Great recording, super dry which I guess was the style at the time. More "funk" than I think I expected. Put me in a good mood.
Some classics!!!
This wasn't the funky Stevie I was expecting, for the most part, but rather a lot of ballads. I don't know how I feel about those ballads. The one undeniably good thing, here, are his vocals.
A pretty enjoyable selection of (mostly love) songs. You are the sunshine of my life and superstition were the obvious standouts. Great voice
This is a nice album. I love the use of - at the time - innovative key instruments. The Fender Rhodes sound in opener 'You are the sunshine of my life' is truly one of the most beautiful e-piano sounds I know. The Hohner Clavinet, especially in 'Superstition' is fantastic. Most songs are strong, up to closer 'I believe (etc.)'. 'You and I' is a beautiful piano ballad that some of the famous artists of this day (ms. Adkins) should listen to. But I have to mention 'Maybe your baby'. That's horrible.
Some all time classic tracks on this one. Nice soul and r&b vibes on much of the album while also retaining a bit more of a conventional pop ballad vibe throughout some tracks.
I think I know two Stevie wonder songs and haven’t heard any other, so listening to this album was really fun! He’s got some good songs that aren’t “hits” and some cool piano parts
Very solid album. Stevie Wonder is a master of providing plenty of space for all instruments to breathe, and it perfectly blends funk and soul in a harmonious way. While it is not his magnum opus [see 'Songs in the Key of Life'], 'Talking Book' is buoyed by the obvious brilliance of 'Superstition' [Stevie's signature song, depending on who you talk to], but also features 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life', 'Maybe Your Baby' and 'I Believe [When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever], three remarkable tunes that helped bring Wonder out from the Motown pigeonhole and into the realm of the bold and innovative. We got Prince and Michael Jackson in the 80s, but Stevie was the one who showed them their future in the 70s. 4/5
sexy
It was very fun
The most 70s album I've ever listened to. Extra star for the anti establishment themes.
It may not be my favorite genre, but this is still one hell of an album. The chiller, downtempo tracks like "You and I" are killer (that theramin!!) and beautifully performed. Sunshine and Superstition are certified classics, but there's nothing here that's really bad at all. There is some more "experimental" type work like in You've Got it Bad Girl, but I'm just getting Bill Wurtz vibes from that and I love it. I don't know if I would come back to specific songs on this album, but I would absolutely spin the whole album when I was in the right mood.
7/10
I listened to Fulfillingness' First Finale previously through this site and while pleasant, it wasn't something I was particularly into and it made me wonder (ha) if I wasn't into Stevie's music, thankfully that's not the case cuz most of this album is like a warm blanket, such a cozy sound that feels genuinely joyful while having some fantastic grooves, but I mean that's pretty obvious knowing his music Basically: a really nice time, I'm so glad I dig it so much and perhaps will make me go back to Fulfillingness' First Finale again for a second chance.
