Underwhelming. A small step to the magic whip.
this was more fun than their self-titled album...which was also surprisingly not-bad - you know, apart from That One Song. there were a few times i was surprisingly reminded of some of the early punk rockers & new wavers (title track kinda reminds me of madness; Bank Holiday basically screams oi oi oi; and Jubilee sounds a lot like Bingo Master's Breakout, by The Fall). i also genuinely liked the closing track's mishmash of goofy british seaside kitsch with a beatles nod pasted in there for good measure.
This was fine but didn't make a very deep impression. It mainly seemed like just pop, but sporting a particular attitude that I could probably decode more meaningfully if I was of the culture, but as a dumb American just comes off as some type of generic non-posh UK vibe.
i thought it was okay. i liked more songs than others, it was fun but others were boring. i thought it was completely average!
Throwback to the 90s "Britpop rivalries" - I was originally more in the Oasis camp but as time has gone on even though Oasis may have a few singles that have higher peaks I think Blur is more listenable over the long haul (i.e. for an entire album). Tons of cool/odd melody on this album with a lot of British influences. "Tracy Jacks" could very well have been a deep-cut old-school Who song. There are some annoyingly-overly-British songs here (e.g. "Bank Holiday") but that's more my lack of preference for punky fast-paced chanting. Fortunately for any irritating moments they are either short or countered quickly; for example "Badhead" is a very mellow tune with some simple and nice guitar lines weaving throughout the song. Then they go from "Far Out" through "To The End" and "London Loves" - that trio typifies this surprisingly diverse and melodic slice of the 90s that for me was a welcome diversion from the angsty-Nirvana trend. 7/10 4 stars.
The album as a whole is a little park walk of the English bourgeoisie and especially their vices, a kind of Kinks concept. But overall it is an album of mediocre songs. (6/10) Favourite Songs: Parklife, To the End

With each new Blur album I hear, the more I become convinced that they are the epitome of a singles band.
This album is from 1994, but it feels like something Duran Duran would have put out in the 80s.

Is this one considered as Blur's best album? I've always been fond of many tracks of this one but I don't believe it is as good as everyone thinks, it drags quite a lot and gets boring at times, I personally prefer The Great Scape and 13 over this one.
I enjoyed listening to this. Great, crisp sound, high energy tunes. Musically diverse songs, with echoes of everything from the Kinks to Bowie to Syd to Gary Numan. The diverse styles are mostly an attribute, but it also tends to make the album seem unfocused and a bit rambling. They could have dropped several tracks and made a better album. "Boys and Girls" is for sure the top track, and "To the End" is absolutely charming. Fave Songs: Boys and Girls, End of a Century, To the End, Clover Over Dover

Can tell this one is a grower. Some great tunes in here, felt a little bloated on a first listen. Keen to do it again though.
So funny to me that this is the sound that brought British music back, not bad by any means just quirky. I did enjoy it but not one of my favourites.
I vaguely remember Boys & Girls from my childhood. I do like it more than some of the other Britpop of the era, but I'm sort of done with the genre in totality. Bank Holiday is pretty dope. However, To The End is boring as hell.

“Parklife” by Blur (1994) Quality pop that apparently took off in the UK, but not in the US, which apparently has a lower tolerance for ditzy grooves generated by toddling about in an era of geopolitical stability. It could have been enhanced by one or two ominous overtones. What, me worry? Overall, this album is a pleasant enough listen, entertaining without quite rising to the level of good music. I spent considerable time wondering which dog on the cover was my favorite (conclusion: the one on the right. He’s winning!). Well crafted arrangements, with deft but not overbearing dissonance. Nicely done on “Magic America”. Refreshing departures from standard chord progressions, while maintaining popular feel. Nice balance. On the album’s only attempt at introspection (“Badhead”), it seems there’s not much in there to introspect. “This Is a Low” is interesting, highly referential, and stuffed with layers of meaning, chiefly for those living (or interested) in a maritime culture. This song is the highlight of this otherwise lowlight album. Vocal harmonies excel, even if lead vocal quality is limited. The strain for pitch on “To the End” is unbearable. Nicely recorded and produced, but to what end? The songs Herman’s Hermits would have produced If they’d been unleashed by the guys in the suits. 2/5
v fun, lost me in the middle a bit but loved beginning and end
Enjoyable but not an everyday listen album.
Favorite songs: Girls and Boys, Parklife, Bank Holiday, London Loves, Lot 105 Thoughts: I’ve been trying to get into blur for a while and this really helped! This is such a nice, fun upbeat album. I listened to it while packing for Sokobanja. But I really did enjoy listening to this album, it was a little bit outside of the box from what I listen to but still quite nice!

This is a great album - blur make a lot of interesting sounds across a range of genres, and despite the fact that there's a lot of big singles on the album (Girls & Boys, Parklife, End of a Century), it still feels very cohesive and there's a lot of tunes here that really serve the album in a broader sense. I've always rejected the Blur vs Oasis comparison as they've always seemed really different and not comparable beyond the fact that they were British bands around at the same time. But if we're going to look at the merits of the two... it's no contest.

Really liked Modern Life Is Rubbish when it was out and remembered being disappointed by Parklife but what do I know? It exploded and became a huge album. Would never think to give this album a spin nowadays, not many tracks stand out on their own and too many are poor versions of The Kinks. Very much of its time but I will always have time for This Is A Low which is fantastic.

Album sa različitim varijacima pjesama, al svejedno je to skupljeno u brit pop. Definitivno u top 5 brit pop albuma, ako ne i u top 3.

There no denying that Parklife is a great pop song. And ironically This is a Low turned out to be a quite wonderful high point of the album. These tracks aside the rest of the album is pretty, well, rubbish. Generally not a fan of the Britpop genre and this does nothing to change that.

Boring
One of the all time great Britpop albums and the main reason why Blur were better than Oasis.
This album lacks some of the frantic pace from other blur records, but instead offers a more experimental sound. Almost as if it was serving as a concept album itself, Albarn gets some practice before his entire concept group, the Gorillaz to come.
Lots of trumpets in the beginning, a bit more orchestral to the end. Not every song is a hit but on the whole completely listenable
I began to get interested in music around the time this came out (but I was into Oasis at the time). I look back on all britpop with the opposite of nostalgia... so I guess I'm looking through shit-tinted glasses here. It's also hard not to hear a whole generation of vapid indie rock that followed from this. Trying to be objective... it's well-played, and sometimes catchy. There are a few moments of wistful melancholy, which is a true indie staple. But mostly, it's like they've taken the most boring elements of rock, pop, punk and other styles, and mashed them together into soaring anthems of mediocrity, with all the blithe confidence of a New Labour party conference. Might get a 2/5... but it's also 16 tracks / 1 hour long.

The first half of this album is as good as pop music gets. Sensational. The second part loses momentum , but still has This Is A Low and To The End to pull it round. Easy 5 stars.

Interesting. Not a huge fan of Blur, but it wasn't bad. I didn't hate it, but not sure there was anything that was going to make my favorites list.
I never heard of this album and don't really know any of the songs. Perhaps I was sleeping? I would not describe myself as a synthpop fan but do like the first track Girls and Boys. The next four songs (to Bank Holiday) seem intended to give a bird's eye view of normal everyday life in England. The theme continues a few tracks later with London Loves. They were quite effective painting this picture. The best example (by far) of an album capturing the essence of a location is Lou Reed's New York. When I hear songs like Debt Collector I wonder why? It's a marching tune without lyrics. I can't for the life of me understand why, but the song works. Trouble in the Message Center moves and is also quite slick. These are the songs that fill out the LP between the hits and do so quite well. Overall, the production is top rate and the LP quite enjoyable. We are definitely in the 90s. One of the songs used the German phrase "vorsprung durch technik" which means progress via technological advancement. This phrase summarizes the production effort on this one.

British people act like these guys were legends, but its pretty mediocre stuff.

The year is 1995: UK media is giving generous coverage to the like of Blur and Oasis as a "Battle of Britpop" rages on the charts with a battle between the leading singles for each band's subsequent albums, "The Great Escape" and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", respectfully. The media was late to the party though, because "Parklife" was the real big hit for the lads and the prime definition of britpop. These are great songs, too. Catchy as hell, good fun, and tons of personality from Albarn et. al., all culminating in a definitive album for the genre. This is nothing if not exemplary by the album's title track "Parklife", in which does an exaggerated accent of a very content englishman, followed by the chorus where we all sing "ALLLLLL THE PEOPLE. SO MANY PEOPLE" and then we go hand-in-hand through our parklife. The back half of the album is not nearly as good as the first half, dropping off all Bank Holiday, picking up with To The End and the last three tracks. Still worth a listen for Britpop history.
An absolute classic. The heady glorious days of Britop in its prime. Brings back so many nostalgic memories of early teenage years. So many debates over what was better, this or Definitely Maybe. Still don’t know the answer
A classic album from our formative years. So many good tunes on here. A handful of forgettable tunes though, but they’re outweighed by the bangers.

I love so many songs on this album. Yet struggle with it as an album as it has so many week tracks. First for songs are brilliant, next 4 average to bad, "To the end" and "This is a low" are wonderful songs but the bits in between just don't live up to the hype. Tough to rate this due to the disparity between the good and bad. 3/5

They throw lots of different genres at you early : synth-pop, speed-punk, a waltz(!) Some catchy tunes. A few weeks ago Spotify sent me their song, To the End, which is nice. The lead singer songs like a cross between John Lydon & Mark Almond.

Bittesehr, hiermit ist das alles wieder da: die Big Love for All Things British, die Buchstabe für Buchstabe eingeatmeten Ausgaben von NME und Select, die noch frischen Erinnerungen an das Erstaunen und den Kulturschock beim ersten Ansehen von Quadrophenia nur wenige Jahre zuvor, der ganze jugendliche Leichtsinn und all die naive Neugierde auf das, was jetzt hoffentlich bald losgeht. Kritische Distanz zu diesem bestimmt (tatsächlich) 100 mal gehörten Album: wie soll das denn gehen? Deshalb auch genau die Anzahl Punkte, die hier schon seit 27 Jahren rumliegt und immer noch kein bisschen Staub angesetzt hat. (I'm a nineties bitch, was soll ich machen?)

I liked this album very much. It sounds so true and so fun. It sounds like "good days". I didn't know Blur much more than "Song 2", but now I'll search for all other albums to know a little bit more. Definitively, worths it!

This was released at the height of my "nothing but metal" phase, so I disagreed violently with how inescapable the singles from it were, but age has mellowed me, and I can enjoy their cheeky Lahndan britpop these days. Fave track - I'm gonna go with "Girls & Boys" because even though it drove me spare in my teens, it's still inextricably linked to some good summer memories, so it gets a nostalgia bump...

Interesting album, not heard a lot of blur before, but can't take Parklife seriously after the Russell Brand thing. Damon Albarn is awesome though, so I look forward to hearing more Blur albums.

This is a contender for my favorite Blur album. The song "Parklife" was a favorite of my brother and me when I was in high school. The overtly British stuff is charming, like "Bank Holiday" and "London Loves." Several great songs on here and I think it covers a fair amount of ground while staying cohesive as an album throughout.

Had higher hopes for this one, but still plagues by symptoms of Brit-pop so this doesn't hit as well as their self-titled album. Trying to be critical of the system but still has that 90s optimism sound. Nothing really stands out in here to me.

Fun nostalgia-filled album that is very much of its time. Blur make me smile, they always sound like they're enjoying themselves. It's never a chore to throw some Blur on, singalong, and enjoy the anthems. Nice happy stuff.

This album was my world 25 years ago. Mixed feelings now, some parts are overwhelmingly cringy but there moments of true quality. 5 stars just for my 15 year old past self.

Kinda on the fence with it. Some songs I think are really cool and unique. I definitely can see where ideas for later Gorillaz records were kind of incubating on here. But a lot of the songs just aren’t really doing it for me, some are even kind of grating to me.

Oh. Another britpop album. What a surprise. Honestly, all of these bands are starting to sound exactly the same. Much like their food, British pop music seems to be mostly bland and uninspiring.

As the first song began to play, I thought it sounded nice: Blur clearly has some Britpop chops. I still think that, but the sequencing and the length ended up souring me to Parklife-in-full. There's a lot of stylistic jumping around, with not enough fun being had in it. At the same time, the high points aren't high enough to perk up my ears. It's a fifty-minute grab bag of tracks, all of which end up sounding nice enough. It might be a gem for someone who liked each of the songs just a little more, but for me it outlives its welcome. The cover would be striking on a shelf: I give them that Blur unreservedly.

This album is a fucking classic
Much campier than anticipated. And a lot poppier.
Modern Life is Rubbish gave birth to the "modern Blur". Parklife was the band vastly overpowering its baby steps. Britpop was on its way to becoming the next big noise to shout out the rooftops about and Blur were poised to being the faces of the movement and Parklife, with its depictions of sketchy, weary, aimless characters, made them more than worthy of the throne. This is the kind of album that would make most band's call it a day. For Blur, it's the start of the next chapter.
Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The album is really fun, and theres a good variety of music. Closer to a 3.7 maybe.
