¿Was it as bad as I thought it would be? No. ¿Did I like it? No. There are so many people in the band, but I've heard other bands create more sound with a lot less. I don't know when I would listen to something like this again by my own choice. If I had to listen again, the rating might go down. For now, 2 stars.

The whole thing, I think, is sick The first half of this still hits incredibly hard, Jordison's drumming is unmatched, and I have now had a flashback of singing Spit It Out at karaoke when I was about 15 so thanks for that Some of the soundscapes from the second half are eerie as hell and still leave a huge impression. The only real downside is that some of the rap-heavy stuff from the tail end seems quite derivative compared to the earlier songs, and some of the lyrics are quuuuite bad, but on the whole it is just a ferocious and unsettling sonic attack

I don’t think it’s fair to completely write off this album as just stupid edginess, but I definitely don’t enjoy this angsty industrial late 90s brand of metal as much as darker, bleaker metal or NWOBHM or prog metal. It felt a bit repetitive and I personally would have liked some more dynamic changes. Obviously I respect the technical skill these guys have. I didn’t hate the album but I didn’t care for it. But now that I’m thinking so much about metal I just wanna go listen to Judas Priest or Opeth.

Was dreading this, but was determined to go in with an open mind. Holy shit. from the first noise I 100% hated it. It's music for people who want to shout about how different they are while being absolutely the same. It was kind of inevitable in the 90s after so many years of pop blandness that this type of music would appear. But its just the different side of the same coin to plastic pop in that it's all about image.

The production is pretty bad. The record-scratching noises are totally unnecessary and the album is missing the art of other heavy bands like System of a Down and Deftones. Also missing: Korn's grooves or Nine Inch Nails' lyricism. I believe these guys do have something to say and came up with a new sound. There are fragments of songs that wander -- maybe accidentally -- into interesting territory.

I think I only like "(sic)" and "Spit it Out".

Not for me. You really only need to listen to maybe 3-4 tracks to get the gist of this 15-song album – way too long for this monotony of sound. I haven't listened to much of Slipknot, but this album is definitely for nu-metal fan – which, I think, doesn't age well. I get that Joey Jordison was a great drummer, but it still didn't do it for me.

Another in that long list of bands throughout might life I missed completely when they were getting airplay and attention. I definitely know the band's name, but that's about it. I had no idea what kind of music they played, etc. Texturally, very interesting, and, wow, this is some real frenetic stuff. I am just a beginner musician so imagining what it's like to play this music on my guitar or to try singing like the vocalist (how does he not lose his voice after the first line?!?), all makes my head spin. While it's hectic and cacophonic, I'm surprised that I don't dislike the music, which tends to happen with thrashy metal. Maybe it's because they are a little more percussive than some other thrash music I've heard, not sure. It's not something I could listen to straight through with regularity but my ears are more interested in this album than I would've thought.

Well well well. Can't wait to hear what Stevie thinks of this album. Deep in the heart of Iowa, 9 boys decided to shred and scream and wear insane masks. People were scared of these guys at the time, maybe some still are, as no one knows what they look like. Except that we do now, especially with lead singer Corey Taylor, who also did a stint with Stone Sour, and drummer Joey Jordison who is up there as one of the best drummers of all time. While this wasn't the first album of Slipknots I listened to, it is one of my favorites. A very interesting blend of thrash metal and rap, but more Limp Bizkit type beats. But that's what you get when you have 9 people playing different instruments including metal trash cans. Almost every single song as a unique as the members of the band and back in freshman year of high school this was one of my go to albums for pump up music while working out and running track. These songs will get you moving. Fav Songs: (Sic), Eyeless (the chorus of this song was a line one of the band members heard while they were in LA from a homeless person), Wait and Bleed, Surfacing (vivid memories of listening to this just before running the 100 yd dash), Spit It Out (metal rap, some wild lyrics), Me Inside, Liberate, No Life, Diluted Extra credit if you listen to the deluxe version there is a song called Purity that was about a serial killer who had buried a girl alive in a box, I believe that was in Iowa too but not sure. Also Snap (Demo).

Oh brother (literally). A band I was sort of unwillingly introduced to via big brother Alex. He was a head banger, listened to a lot of metal stuff. I enjoyed some of it here and there, but I was very dismissive of these creeps, hoping I'd never have occasion to encounter them or take their stuff seriously. And yet, here we are. Alex texted me excited this morning about the album of the day. What could it be? Kendrick Lamar? Another from Kanye? Led Zeppelin? Nope, Slipknot. The princes of darkness. I think it's fair to say that little me was creeped out by this band, and I'm sure at least once I told Alex "I just want my brother back." Listening now, trying to remove that prejudice and give a chance, it's alright. There are actually a few songs I like, in part because I recognize them from way back when. Overall though, it's an energy that I'm simply not in tune with today. Granted, I could be in a mood for crazy metal sometimes, but it's very rare, and when I am I think I'd reach for something else. But I recognize the style, the value this has, albeit for someone else. Favorite tracks: Eyeless, Wait and Bleed, Surfacing. Album art: What's creepier than a bunch of dudes in red jumpsuits and masks? Not a whole lot, I'll tell you that. I admire their commitment to the aesthetic though, because I think they even perform in the masks. Creepiness aside, it's an effective cover and a pretty badass band photo. I'm smiling through it hoping I won't have nightmares. 3/5

Really good hard rock. This changed the game when it was released - I have grown to like it more since it’s original release. 4.5 and up!

undeniably important album. You can love Slipknot or hate Slipknot or just be over their whole schtick, but they helped bring Nu-Metal to the mainstream. Huge percussion, bottled anger, cool sound, best thing to come out of Iowa. Slipknot was and remains a gateway band into other types of heavy music, and for that all metalheads should thank them, whether or not you enjoy it. For me, This album will always be a nostalgia hit. || I think this album is more important to the list than 'All Hope is Gone' by far. but I won't criticize Slipknot having 2 albums when so many others have 5+ that feel unnecessary.

Fuck me. This is some angry-at-Mom-'n'-Dad-music right here. Despite being a guitar teacher since 1999, this is the first (see also: last) time I've ridden the Slipknot train. Militarily executed rhythm section is kinda impressive, but I now see why they needed those stupid mask gimmicks, 'cause the music wasn't musical enough. Betcha the singer ain't so angry at his Mom 'n' Pops now they made him a multimillionaire.

Didn’t really listen to these guys first time round, but loving the album. I like linkin park and some of the vibes are similar - particularly liked ‘surfacing’ a great one when working 😂 me inside and eyeless are another couple I liked

I saw Slipknot at a festival once. There were about thirty of them and they all seemed to be playing drums. I thought they were pretty funny.

fast, heavy, aggressive. good drumming. the rap parts were kind of cringe. the vocals in general were kind of hit or miss. overall not bad, I didn't think I would like slipknot this much

Enjoyably loud

I wasn't really into this when it came out, despite probably being the target age. Lots of friends listened to it and "Wait and Bleed" was frequently played on music tv channels so I came to know the songs through osmosis. I have come to appreciate slipknot later in life. This album is exciting, it's full of interesting and head nodding rhythms layered with powerful and heavy and sometimes screaming guitar sounds. Standouts for me are the Jungle intno to "Eyeless", the classis "Wait and Bleed", the guitar & bass call and response on "Surfacing", the strange, haunting, screaching sounds that somehow are made by a guitar on "Tattered and Torn" There's also some industrial sounds and some walking Jazz bass here and there! If you can look past the Nu Metal rapping and dj scratching that was the style at the time it makes for a great listen.

Love this album. I sometimes go long times without hearing any songs from this album, but whenever I do I immediately turn the album on. I never get tired of it.

Terrible sub punk

I try to approach each album with an open mind however this album has two things I absolutely detest: overly long 90s albums and nu-metal. I tried hard but this 100% is not music for me and is a complete struggle. The lyrics are just so pathetic and are meant for angsty teenagers. But I'm neither angsty or a teenager. I will never been listening to this again.

Album No. 191 & a serious candidate for being the worst of all. The notes promised me an “album that spans several genres”; well if ‘aggressive’, ‘repetitive’, & ‘shite’ count as different genres then it delivers on that promise. I just have no words to describe how awful this is from start to finish.

I was not familiar with Slipknot. I'm sad that I now am :( I'm not sure what the point of the album is. It starts in maybe the worst way, in that it's high-pitched and ear-bleeding. A good hint of what's to come. I could have gone my whole life without listening to this album, but unfortunately I'm now initiated. I want out.

Listen... I know that they're Slipknot but I can't help but think that this shit fucking rocks. It makes me want to punch boulders and chug mountain dew.

Nu Metal is just not my thing. I get this is a very formative album in the genre, but I can't get into it. The rappier tracks I like a bit more they remind me a little of Rage Against The Machine. Not something I will return to. If I had found this when I was first learning to play guitar and still wanted to play the heavier and shreddier sound I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Probably an album everyone should experience once. Very hectic and enough generating enough heat to top kilns. I saw these guys at a Big Day Out, out of curiosity. The drummer was particularly impressive, but a little too regimented.

I liked much more of the new Slipknot releases, but this first one is not bad at all. It's possible to see all the characteristics that made the band famous since this firsts songs.

2 stars for nostalgia as I used to like them when I was younger, but after 15 years I found it a really difficult listen. The percussion and aggression is what the album is all about and it just didn't make up for the lack of variety or anything approaching a melody.

Sheeeit man. That dude said if your 14 and hate your stepdad this is for you. Well bro was right, when I was 14 this shit was untouchable. However, I am not fourteen anymore. But to a certain Degree I appreciate it for the Nostalgia, it's fun man.

A vocalist whose main objective is to destroy his throat. A drummer who probably wished he has four arms. And of course, everyone is very angry about everything. This album is basically one satan reference away from being the most stereotypically metal metal album. But it does rock. Those speedy drum fills, heavy riffs, and mad vocals hype me up. It's so energizing. I don't hate the world, but I gotta admit that this is a perfect work-out album. Another heavy metal album that I actually enjoy.

I appreciate the additional percussion being used, the aggression and the unique sound distinguishing it from other ”nu-metal”, but it wears off towards the end of the album. Also a lot more extreme than I was expecting. An honorable 1 star

This is not for me, a 50-year-old man, and it wasn't for me in 1999 either (you can do the math) but maybe if I was a disaffected, bummed-out teenager who needed an outlet that sometimes only agressive music can satisfy, well then I think I might be into this. This is definitely better than Korn or Limp Bizkit or whatever other nu metal I may be lumping it in with either fairly or unfairly but I mean if I was at a party or bar or on a roadtrip and someone put this music on I'd probably leave or consider jumping out of the car. Maybe I'd just see if there was anything by the Deftones to put on. With all that being said Slipknot are good at what they do and next time I see some kid in one of their t-shirts I won't automatically assume they have shit taste.

Wait and Bleed is the only good song, mainly because the guy takes a break from screaming and actually has a decent voice. Fast and loud doesn't make something automatically good, but respect to the drummer.

While I can see the appeal it didn't hold my interest much. The parts I enjoyed the most were the drums.

One of my favourite metal albums

The perfect album to take me, an innocent 12 year old, from thinking Offspring was heavy to being open to much heavier music. Yea its gimmicky with masks, 100 members beating on random things, and they have real deep lyrics like "you can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes"(what does that mean?) but that's honestly a perfect recipe to turn a 12 year old into a metal head and it worked on me with help from other Nu-metal bands. I still like it and I went to California and could not see shit, so maybe he was on to something. Iowa was their best record, though.

Sooooo.... not a record for me I am afraid, slightly juvenile, but IU suppose that is the point. not in my collection and not likely to be. Sorry for those who love Slipknot but just makes me feel that they were aiming at Teenage angst throughout.

Nice album here that’s hardcore and intense. Always felt slick or had a unique sound and was able to differentiate themselves from other metal groups. The double bass drums are great and the guitar riffs are solid. Pretty nice album but probably my second favorite of theirs. 7.7/10

I don't like Slipknot. I'm sorry, I know it was an important band to a lot of people growing up but there's so much better old and nu metal. 2/5 especially for forcing me to listen through the extended 10th anniversary edition Spotify

So when I was around 13 I got a mix cd from my cousin. This mix cd was exclusively metal and there were 2 songs on that cd that hit me harder than any of the others. 2 songs that are the reason I got into metal. They were "Toxicity" by System of a Down and "Wait and Bleed" by Slipknot. I lost that cd in a move shortly after I got it and I didn't have a track list for it because what 13 year old keeps a track list? It took years for me to rediscover "Wait and Bleed" and when I did I think I listened to this album on repeat for like a month straight. Thank you random album generator for reminding me of this. I have so much love for Slipknot, both the band and the album, but I would argue that it's not their best. That's not to discount the album by any means, it's a fantastic album. Easy 4. Maybe a 4.5 but that's likely angsty teen Been talking.

Holy shit I'm 16 again. The nostalgia hit for this album probably impairs my ability to judge if it's actually good or not, this was one of the gateway albums that got me into metal. Well, I say 'this album' the extra demo versions and remixes at the end of Spotify's offering of the '10th anniversary' certainly aren't needed. Original please! Slipknot still rips. (sic) is, well exactly as it declares itself, Wait and Bleed is a classic and the rest of the record maintains a consistent level of head banging goodness, though it is frontloaded with the latter parts (even discounting the extras on the Spotify version) are definitely weaker than the opening salvo.

I was really excited for this, I never listened to Slipknot growing up, they're just a metal band that missed me. I was less impressed by the album, maybe because it was a Sunday, maybe Sundays just aren't the day for a bunch of guys in masks, or maybe it just wasn't that good... Average for me

I love albums full of energy, and Slipknot definitely deliver. From the moment it began I had a huge grin on my face, which peaked around wait and bleed/ surfacing and stayed there for pretty much the entirety of the record. Why isn't this a 5 then? Unfortunately, it can't keep up the quality and starts to die off somewhere around the midpoint.

Im not trying to make it a theme (grading just things i already love a 5), but come on, this album is killer. I really do hope to find some hidden gems and things that inspire me, but this curb stomps the pixies. After listening again, still rocks but very glad Corey sang more on following albums. they improved with timd

I love that regardless of genre or "sound" you can always have some catchy almost pop hooks / moments. Not one I'd choose to listen to often but I did enjoy these couple of listens

I have only listened to "Duality" by these guys. No doubt they definitely have a LOT of musicality, particularly in the drums. This album solidifies it for me. But the amount of screaming and energy is... almost too much. I would have liked to have heard more guitar, solos and such. Have it brought more to the foreground, you know? I listened to the anniversary edition, which had some of their demos on it. Those are just a primal scream more than anything else. So the album itself is probably a 3.5 for me.

Just a bit too intense. I do enjoy some Slipknot songs but a whole album is a lot. Too much screaming and anger. So despite some nuanced instrumental work, the whole sound comes off as a bit one-dimensional - needs more depth, variety, and complexity. Still, the speed at which they play is impressive. Good - Wait and Bleed (sounds more like Taylor's Stone Sour work), Spit it Out, Me Inside. Excessive - (sic), Tattered & Torn, Liberate, Diluted, Scissors. Toeing the line - Eyeless, Prosthetics, Only One. Overall, I can't listen to the album more than once...well maybe if I'm trying to get amped up to kill someone.

I'll preface this writeup by stating that I'm not a Nu Metal fan. There were some moments on this album that made me go damn though. The playing is intense as well as the vocals and I can definitely see the draw that this album had towards anyone with some anger inside that needed to get released.

Early on my reactions were: Damn. Cool. Scary. Damn. Damn. Cool. Scary. Damn. Unfortunately the last two tracks killed this album for me. By the end of Scissors the word "relentless" came to mind. By the end of Eeyore, I was simply uncomfortable. On the second listen, I even turned Eeyore off because I couldn't listen anymore. Giving it a 3 because I liked a lot of the earlier tracks, but it just went off the rails by the end.

I saw Slipknot live when this came out and it was one of the most fun gigs ever. At some point I got a foot long gash on my back in the pit, the decks were on fire and I had the best laugh ever - I came out a mess of sweat and beer. This album is great fun. I feel like they got more cohesive and better structured later on, but this is just all over the place and great fun. Eyeless, Spit It Out, Wait and Bleed. You cannot argue with that, can you?

Big meh for me. I mean, as everyone in my generation I was into by metal at the time but I distrust anyone who did not get bored of this by 2003. Nice drums tho

Loud and rawcous, but unexpectedly eclectic and musical. Made me feel like a disaffected youth again. RAAAAAAAAGH!!!

Unsurprisingly (to me) juvenile lyrics and surprisingly (to me) sophisticated production. Adult me would still be embarrassed to admit publicly to liking it, but my inner teenager enjoyed it a lot.

Angry. Don't typically like this genre but this was enjoyable if you are in the mood. Raw energy.

-Nice drum fill in "Prosthetics" -Cool voice effect on "Gimme a reason why I need to..." on "Diluted" -I like the bass slide things in "Eyeless" -Pretty solid chorus in "Wait And Bleed" -Cool guitar and drum(?) fill in in "Surfacing" The lyrics are also a lot clearer and make it easier to jam to. -It does seem like heaviness with no real counterpoint a lot of the time. Not sure if that criticism is actually legit. Idk, the blast beat drums as very "intense" and just fast chugging guitar kind of turns to sludge for me a lot of the time.there are moments where the "musical point" is much clearer, and I tend to like it more, but those seem to be the exception rather than the rule -However, I became more acclimated on the 2nd and 3rd listens, and my opinion definitely improved with more listening

My 15-year-old self was stoked to see this on the list. While many would argue SLipknot was just more of the same Nu-Metal the 90s were famous for puking out, I found this to be a perfect gateway drug into a world of more evolved Metal. I went from this to bands like (At The Gates, Origin, Sepultura, Dystopia)... which in turn led me to 1000 subgenres, and eventual love of (Metal, Crust, etc, etc) that has never wavered. If it wasn't for the commercial success of this album, it may be that the entirety of my vinyl collection would have been seriously altered. Also, after giving it a relisten, it had some seriously innovative stuff going on in the realm of percussion. so yeah.

This band has entirely too many members. When you have one guy whose sole responsibility is samples and another whose sole responsibility is turntables, guess what they're going to do? I remember this being one of the first albums I ever got. And I was freaked the fuck out by it 😂 mental, scared me 😂. Prob influenced the metal and punk and garscore I got into in late teens. Listening back now its so good, prob gonna be a 5 for nostalgic value.

You know, fine. There's something to be said for this kind of music. If you want to just blast thinking out of your head for a while, it does the trick and, honestly, I kinda dig that.

Great album but not their best. I can understand why this album and style of music isn't for everyone.

A noisy mess

Friends and sister always used to love Slipknot, but I had never listened to them. Pretty good fun to listen to. I guess a bit dated, but good energy.

When I listen to music I'm not looking to get screamed at by a 30 year old man.

Some highlights for sure, wait and bleed for example is a great track. But overall it’s not an album I particularly enjoyed or have any intention of revisiting. If I couldn’t enjoy Slipknot as a 19yr old I’m very unlikely to do so as 40yr old

Not generally a fan of shout singing. It's very heavy if that's your thing. Drumming is interested though.

Death Metal or whatever subgenre this is, really isn’t my jam. That being said the musicianship is commendable although it is repetitive.

My expectations for this one were rather low, as I had a low opinion of Slipknot back when I was still a metalhead (considered them a sellout, etc). Turns out, this album sounds a lot better than I expected. I particularly enjoyed the drumming and the variation in instrumentation and song structure. I'm not too big on growling anymore these days, so I liked the less-growly songs such as Wait And Bleed better. Also not too big on the rap in songs such as Spit It Out. All in all this was a positive surprise though.

I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would. I'm not going to listen to it all the time but it is definitely appropriate for certain moods. Honestly, it really slapped. I haven't listened to enough metal for me to have many specific positive things to say about it but I enjoyed the riffs and the drummer is badass. Also some of the choruses had some nice melodies and even the screaming was cool and not over the top. Also I'm not sure how I feel about the rapping. Maybe it's cringeworthy but I thought it was kind of cool. Some of the songs (like Scissors) were a little much but I can at least see their appeal. Favorite Songs: Wait and Bleed, Surfacing, Spit It Out, Me Inside, Liberate, Prosthetics Least Favorite Song: Scissors (I think it's mostly because I haven't listened to enough metal to appreciate it), Eeyore Decent 8/10

i liked this, especially the first couple songs! it's super intense/exciting but that makes it kind of a lot to listen to the full length of. i like that the songs are fairly distinct, and they do a good job with buildup and payoff. i don't know metal that well well but i can tell that this thing is dated/90s-y, particularly in the sections where the singer isn't screaming. also the heavy breathing/whisper singing part in scissors really got on my nerves.

2.5-3 stars. took a few songs to get into it and I had really never listened to metal before but it was honestly kinda enjoyable. Got a bit long at the end, couldn't really tell them apart

You know, I enjoy stupid edgy lyrics, so I could probably enjoy this if it weren't for the bits where they scream and it just sounds like it was recorded on my webcam microphone. Which is like, 90% of the album.

Sometimes I like metal. This is not one of those times. There's just so much screaming and there's such a huge focus on percussion that I really can't pick out much musicality throughout. And I can't stop imagining the lead singer just screaming at concerts in his silly clown mask. Like what? Anyways, not good.

I put this off for a whole day because I was dreading it so much. I cannot BELIEVE that there are MULTIPLE Slipknot albums on this list. Like what in the actual fuck. Slipknot? Just like "All Hope is Gone", this album is a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I actually really dug the opening track "(sic)". But, just like All Hope is Gone, this album is about 20 minutes too long. The monotony of the screaming and the noise wears out its welcome after 10 minutes, and becomes truly excruciating after 30.

I find metal to be hit or miss, but this album is definitely a hit. It's pure speed, music to bang your head to. The drums are the highlight of the album: they're crisp, loud, and powerful, a perfect compliment to the screamed vocals and heavy guitar.

Meh... this was rough. Didn’t finish. Made it 3/4 of the way through and even with the volume down so I could mostly only hear the music it was difficult to listen to. Not a fan of this skid music.

heard this album countless times, was at exactly the right age when it came out to think it was cool. it still is tbh, full of energy and it's brutal as - I can see why people went "nah this is nu-metal shit ay", but I also think those people are fuckin idiots. 4/5.
