A very energetic album. There’s one emotion and it’s rage. It can feel like a bit much sometimes, but it’s still a solid album, didn’t expect to like it.

true metal music, understandable if others can't get into it, the vocals especially can be a bit grating at times, but the intensity is handled extremely well with absolute headbanging music
"Slipknot" is the debut album by American heavy band Slipknot. The music is put in the nu metal genre but really spans several heavy genres. Extensive percussion and a heavy sound is the best descriptor. The album was the first and last one with guitarist Josh Brainerd. Commercially, the album hit #51 on the US and #37 on UK charts. It was critically well received. The album opens with two songs combined "742617000027" and (sic)." Guitar scratches and repeating samples. Heavy, pounding, fast drums. Lead singer Corey Taylor screaming. An eerie guitar. Oh, this is speed metal. 74217000027 was the barcode of their demo album "Mate." In their first single "Wait and Bleed," Taylor actually sings and then screams. It goes back and forth. The music follows with thrash/speed metal to softer, more melodic. At any moment, a civilized human can go crazy. Very metal. A swirling wind sound begins "Spit It Out." Taylor now rapping. Musically, the beats are constantly changing. "We had to shoot you down. We want to spit it out." We get a sawing sound on the epic album closer "Scissors." An industrial sounding guitar. The song chugs along and builds with the percussion. As with a number of these songs, it ends chaotically. Taylor sounds like he's dying. He might be. I needed a punch in the head this morning to wake me up; this delivered that. I think this only got lumped in the nu metal category due to the time it came out and that Taylor does rap a few times throughout the album. This is fast, hard and loud. I liked it for just that reason. They do show signs of an actual melody in a few of these songs which I found to be their best. If you're a thrash/speed metal fan, you'll dig this and probably already have.
Punching you in the guts with this iconic self titled debut studio album. Slipknot really burst onto the scene with this album that still holds its own over 20 years later. Full of the hard hitting drumming that Metal is famous for - layered with guitars, samples and melodic lyrics make for an amazing album. Whilst it may not be everyone's cup of tea, in the right circumstance at a live gig you could probably turn a few people over to the dark side. Best: Wait & Bleed Worst: Scissors Note: The 10th Anniversary album was the only one available on Spotify, I only listened to the first 17 tracks.
Another one? Y’all have already put me through this once before. I’m not in any mental state to listen to this in its entirety, but I know the vibe and it’s not for me. Sticking with 2 stars since they’re at least marginally better than Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit.
I realize Slipknot will probably get clowned on here (pun not intentional), but I've always enjoyed a few songs here and there. My inner-angry-white-boy was ALL ABOUT the first few songs, but a full album of nothing but smash-and-bang rage gets tiring after a while. Corey Taylor's rapping is also dated as hell, though I will admit his flow is solid on one track (think it was "No Life"? The track near the end of the record). The production is raw, and I think the percussion is the main focal point here, with the marching snares and near-constant barrage of double bass pedal pulling a lot of work. Again, it lasts a little longer than I think it should, but it's overall solid. Favorite tracks: "(sic)", "Eyeless"

The second Slipknot generated by the 1001 generator. Was surprised they even made it to the list once ..but twice, huh? The music is better than a Korn or a Linkin Park or etc, but the whiny in-your-face lyrics and the "singing" is completely ruining the extra star.

Thoughts before listening: If this has Wait and Bleed on it then I love that song. Otherwise I know Slipknot is well respected in the metal scene but they were never my thing. I always thought the costumes were gimmicky. Review: I didn't like this music when I was listening to punk rock back in the day and I'm definitely not into it now. That being said, Wait and Bleed is still a banger and one of my favorites of the nu metal era. There are definitely some parts in the other songs that I can enjoy cause they do seem to have a knack for catchy choruses, but those are few and far between...and usually just one part of an otherwise annoying song. I especially hate the death metal vocals and raps that are used throughout. This just isn't for me.

Considered a 5 but a little too edgelord and dated
Crazy to think how groundbreaking nu-metal sounded at launch
Wasn't into it when it came out, as I had been going to hardcore shows for a few years by this time, and it wasn't anything new, just a heavier version of mainstream hard rock/hardcore-lite like Korn or something. Pretty sweet drums though. Songs generally sound the same, everything detuned, repetitive, wait and bleed was the big single, probably because its one of the few with actual singing so more digestible for mass audience. Production/mixing a lot better then contemporary hardcore acts. 2.9. Sidenote, the costume/mask stuff is fucking dumb.
What can I say? I am a fan of Slipknot and this self-titled album was spot on what I wanted to hear. This metal album was aggressive, heavy, and full of rage. I liked every song on this album and I am definitely going to listen to it again in the future. A must-listen for any metalhead! Favorite Song(s): "Wait and Bleed", "Spit It Out", "Eyeless"
Heavy but I can't get into the vocals.
I get what they're going for and they are doing it very well. Shame that what they were going for is making an anthem for the edgy, anti-social, unkempt guy whose main goal in life is driving his shitty beater and being a menace to his small town. It's not even that the music is bad, it is actually pretty good most of the time. It is hard and dirty, sometimes with other genres mixed in. And Wait and Bleed is still a banger. The big issue is just that the subject matter feels so juvenile, it makes it hard to take it seriously, even though it feels like Slipknot takes itself *very* seriously.

I think its a testament to slipknot that i dont totally hate this. But unfortunately its just one of those few genres i cant totally get behind the sound of. Well made but i would probablu never listen to again
I actually feel like there's a good album in here somewhere, but it's overly long, the record scratches feel extraneous at best, and the mix is very weird and kinda anti-heavy most of the time. As is, not really for me. Even if I do appreciate bits of it. Call it a 2.5 I guess.

Metal in general is not something I had a shine towards, but in my older age I'm looking back at things I didn't pay much attention to and having an open mind for it. This album pulls in from different places I'm familiar with - Helmet a little Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More in particular, but just didn't explore much. The chugging guitars, the guttural screaming, it's all glorious, even if I have to pause to let my ears stop ringing. Wait and Bleed has a melodic hook that sticks with you, has a rapid fire rap and a hook in the chorus. The hidden track Eeyore is a speed thrash gem. I'd have to agree with this album being a "terrifying racket", but I consider that high praise.

If your idea of a good time is to have a grown man growl, bark and scream at you, Slipknot is a band for you! In an attempt to be creepy and terrifying, they succeed, though at times they are trying way too hard to be edgy and come across as ridiculous and laughable. I definitely laughed more while playing this album than anything else on this list, not because it was funny, but it was so "over the top" hilarious, if it was a parody or pseudo-hardcore death metal band, but I think these guys are serious. If your goal is to clear out the cool smoking kids from behind the school, audition for clown school or to piss off your parents and friends (if you have any), mission accomplished!

Wiki notes say the genre is nu metal and the definition of nu metal says it " . . . rarely displays . . . musical technique". I guess I prefer music that actually displays musical technique. The title of the second song had me laughing out loud but I can't bring myself to +1 for that.
I made it through two songs but then realized that there was over an hour of this shite remaining so I pulled the plug. I don't think that I could have listened to this when I was an angsty teenager not to mention now when I'm a curmudgeonly old geezer.
No need to shout. I get that they may have anger-management issues, but that doesn't mean I want to be a part of it. Bailed during the second track.

I liked this one more than I expected! Still a little too abrasive for me, but I get the appeal. Tracks like "Wait and Bleed" are pretty melodic to be honest, I get why it was the big single from this album. Slipknot has always seemed like a pretty gimmicky band to me, but they do what they do well, even if it's not necessarily for me. For a debut album, I was fairly impressed.

I liked this more than I expected to - it breathes some new life into the metal genre. And at the end of Scissors I actually said "wow!".
I've always felt a sense of repulsion toward Slipknot. To me they seem to epitomise everything dirty and gross born out of the 90s nu metal scene even if they dispute that genre classification) - the closest thing I can materialise it to is the smell of dreadlocks.
Stroke of luck here. I'd just bought my first nu-metal album "Poisonous Legacy"- Sarabante, when this Slipknot! was fed to me. What an experience. Lots of highlights, although at 60min, way to long. The CD age forced these long run times, but this could've been a 45mim masterpeice.

A pioneer of the nu-metal genre. And still to this day one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Given their aesthetic and almost character based personas, they have a very cult-esque following. People love Slipknot. And some people can't stand it. I imagine most who find them annoying now probably loved them at one point, but have grown out of that sound. As someone who has never delved into their albums, but always respected what they did, I feel some don't give enough credit to these guys. They found a niche people loved, and blew up in a way no one anticipated. And there are some genuinely talented musicians behind this band. Easily the best parts of this album for me are Joey and Corey. Joey just fits this sound so perfectly. He was incredibly proficient and moved at lightning pace, but also hit like a truck. It's hard to combine those elements effectively, and he mastered it. The intro on "Eyeless" alone is a perfect example of his skill. And Corey pushes his voice to a place I'm not sure the human vocal chords are meant to achieve. Sometimes it's concerning how far he goes. "Scissors" is a prime example. There is a moment where I can only imagine he is spitting out blood, and the way his voice cracks in and out of his screaming at the end of the song sounds physically painful. It is genuinely impressive to pull off that kind of singing on every song. I also love the brief moments where you can hear Craig Jones' sampling take the forefront. Again on "Eyeless", where they make the genius move of including an amen break in the intro. I don't think the lyrical content is anything amazing. There aren't really any deeper meanings or messages that they try to communicate through the lyrics. They are just very dark and brooding, and always angry at something. Do they sometimes border on cringe-worthy? Occasionally yeah. But that seems to be a regular characteristic of Slipknot's music. It isn't meant to be deep and meaningful, unless you are a depressed and angsty teenager. I can see why some would look back at this band negatively and question how they could ever consider this good. But sometimes I am in the mood for music that is a little more mindless, and takes less concentration to enjoy. Not every metal album has to be filled with genius innovation and songwriting. Some people just want to mosh and scream their lungs out, and that's okay.
Get out of the kitchen if you cant handle the heat 4
I was fully prepared to give this a 4/5 after the first few tracks as they were so good, but the album really overstays it's welcome being an hour long. I still enjoyed listening to it, the drums are insane, vocals are intense, and they know how to bring 110% energy on pretty much every song here. The style just runs a bit stale by the end. Can see myself going back to a bunch of songs on here.
Slipknot's overall vibe (as in their dress, the creepy breathing, manic laughter, etc) is definitely not for me. But there's some really hardcore tracks here and I can absolutely see how this had a major influence on rock, punk, emo, and heavy metal when it was released. Definitely some absolute banger thrashcore tracks here. But I really can't get past the creepy clown masks, and something about the vibe just really turns me off.
Never listened to this band, but feel like I should have been all along.
Yes I was the child of a divorce. Yes I have a step-dad who was/is cool as hell but I was angsty when this came out. Yes I loved Korn at the time. And yes. I first heard this record at my job, and I am not kidding, at my job at Blockbuster Video the same year I graduated High School. And Yes. I FUCKING LOVE THIS RECORD.

It's not bad. I might even call it "solid" in that most of the songs are above average. But just barely. Like 6, on a scale of 1 to 10. Converting the scale from 10 to 5, this gets 3 stars.

Yep, the whole thing is sick. Like their attitude and the weird bleeps/intro's, but have always found this 'aggressive' music quite boring and silly and more for 16 years old kids. Fine if you are 16 but for others: grow up.

i had work done today to fix a titanium insert into my skull for attaching a replacement tooth to. this felt appropriate. and for the record it was knocked out by being really cool and not by doing something that a tosser would do.

It hold a strange middle between schtick, hardcore and nu-metal. When 'Wait And Bleed' came out in 1999, it positively surprised me and made me listen to this album. I remember how unimpressed I was with the rest of the album, which I found decidedly mediocre (Medio-Core ? Hah!) I can't say that re-listening to it now, 20 years after the fact, has really put this album in a different perspective. The only thing I'm hearing better is how excellent the drumming was and how good Corey Taylors voice fits the music. But the songs, with a few exceptions, are not any better -and oftentimes a lot less, than that of their peers on either the hardcore or the nu-metal side. It must've been the schtick then that pulled them over the line.
First time hearing Slipknot other than "Before I Forget" on Guitar Hero III. I was never much into angry, expletive screaming music like this. Much less so now that I’m almost 49. On the very rare occasion the singer tried singing clean, it didn't sound bad. As it is, it's just difficult to relate to this kind of music. Favorite song: "No Life" maybe?

This was just straight up anger with barely any cohesion. It's very stereotypical nu metal and didn't age very well. The parts that did go hard didn't last long and I feel like their later music after this was much better.

Loud teenage angst combined with some toxic masculinity equals a shit album. Again I harp on this but, this makes the 1001 list but Tool doesn't? I really question the people who contributed to this book. There's good metal out there. (Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Fates Warning, Queensryche just to name a few.) Stuff like this gives metal a bad name.

Talented musicians, but not my thing.
I am quite a slipknot fan but you really can hear the difference in their focus and individuality in subsequent albums, and while there are some great tracks that stand the test of time, some feel more like pastiches of other bands like Korn rather than Slipknot themselves.
That run of first 5 or 6 songs on the record is pure gold. After that, it does get just a tad samey and lackluster, but still a very strong record. Better than I expected from their debut, frankly.
Strong album, but maybe could have cut 2 or 3 tracks to really make this thing soar.
Man - this is not my music, but it is fucking impressive.
The whole thing, I think, is sick. Eh. It's fine. This type of nu metal works best in short bursts (40 minutes max for an album - System of a Down are perfect at this), because after a while everything starts blending together and you're left with a bunch of songs of being yelled at about pussy warts or whatever, and it gets old. What I'm saying is that this album is good but repetitive and way too long. It's still probably their best album experience over all. Slipknot's more of a "put the singles in your workout playlist"-kind of band, and that's completely fine, because their singles slap hard.

Is it LOUD? Yes. Does it ROCK? Yes. Is it something I would personally listen to? No, not really. When something like this comes up in this list. I begrudgingly listen. Sometimes I'm surprised. This album is something that I think if I knew it when it came out, I might hold it in higher regard. In 1999 I think I was more open to this kind of music. Today, I'm older and my tastes have changed. I think it is really good - for the genre. I can see why people like it. The guitars and drums are amazing. There is some screaming - a bit more than I enjoy as a 56 year old. Let me have another shot of Jim Beam. I think it is helping! Standouts: Wait and Bleed, Spit it Out (both were #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart). Overall: 3/5

Alright, nice things only: 1) Corey Taylor is a truly impressive vocalist 2) The frenetic rhythms on display prove both creativity & technical prowess 3) "Eyeless", "Wait and Bleed", "Surfacing", and "Spit it Out" is a consecutive run of songs where I wasn't praying for it to be over. There were 2 lists I made as a teenager, Favourite Bands & Least Favourite Bands. I think Slipknot and Marilyn Manson were neck and neck for the top spot of the 2nd list, but my knowledge of both artists was pretty limited. Also that list included Kanye, T Swift and Rihanna from what I recall, so I could have been wrong about this too! Still not a fan

Я не подружился с хэви-металом, извините. Всё ещё. Мой уровень хардовости и трешанины ограничивается какими-нибудь Limp Bizkit или Papa Roach. Вижу, что пацаны понаставили там 4-5... я поставлю 3-, почти 2. Я по доброй воле никогда не буду слушать хардкор. По крайней мере, пока что в моей жизни всё хорошо и к психотерапевту мне ходить не надо. Выделю Spit It Out: это было что-то не из разряда "треш до безвкусицы". И вообще как-то начало бе, остальное получше.

Difficile de lancer cet album sans se boucher le nez, la faute aux multiples odeurs de clébard se mélengeant à l'air ambiant dès qu'on ouvre le boitier du CD. Une fois passée la barrière de l'odeur, c'est au bruit constant qu'il faut se frotter, on en ressort avec tous les sens fortement endommagés.

Huh, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I assumed the poppier bits of later Slipknot were all that was keeping me kinda interested, but there’s plenty to enjoy here. There are still occasional chorus hooks, mixed with riffs which are fierce and concise. The first half of the album rattled along at a satisfying pace. Also, the weird guitar sounds/samples throughout really set this apart from a lot of metal, and add to the horror aesthetic. I can see why metal fans and/or angsty teens might rate this highly.
I really didn’t think I’d like Slipknot, but yeah I really dug this album. The drumming in particular stood out the whole way through, but I also liked the vocals and the switches they would do between vocal styles. It’s a very catchy album.
Slipknot and their self-titled album are the logical progression of the nu metal genre. There is more focus on rhythms and grooves, pulling inspiration from the contentious rap metal genre and abrasive industrial metal. This is further emphasized with Slipknot having a DJ on deck, who opens the song Eyeless with a breakbeat. This is further emphasized with cleaner production than you would not hear in most metal. The dirty truth about Slipknot is that it's the kind of metal that really resonates with a lot of young teenagers and frat dudes who might consider it "the heaviest shit ever". I think that's okay. The pitfalls of Slipknot are thinking that it's innovative or even trying to be innovative. It's certainly not, but Slipknot makes a great case for how it integrates it's influences into their music. Corey Taylor's vocals borrow from the aggressive screaming found in hardcore. Meanwhile, the guitarists will occasionally employ riffs inspired from black metal or death metal. Turntablism had already been employed in metal and rock with Incubus, and of course the occasional rapping borrowed from recent hip hop circa 1998. The result is a pretty compelling amalgamation of nu metal on the edge of the new millennium, but nothing truly groundbreaking. I am sad to report that Slipknot, not unlike the Rolling Stones, are only worth listening to for their singles. For all their horror-inspired aesthetics and mega-brootal riffage, much of this album did not make me feel any strong emotions. Some would be more critical of this notion, as it would indicate a failing of artistic expression! I think it still has inherent artistic value, it just does not fall on me to determine that value. Enjoy metal!

Like bad sex and cold pizza, my enthusiasm for this intensity peaks at about 10 seconds in, drops significantly after 90 seconds, and is completely gone at 3 minutes.
It was good. Definitely appreciate the mixups in genre throughout this, metal can get somewhat homogenous at times so each track did keep me on my toes. The grunge influence was palpable, while giving it a metal flair that was interesting. It got a little thrashy at times for my taste, so I’m not sure how much I’ll revisit it, but for what it is it was quite good.

Slipknot releases an anger-fueled album that justifies the existence of nu metal before the oversaturation that resulted in the genre becoming a joke. Their second album Iowa gears too far on the abrasiveness and groove while their later albums are too poppy and boring, whereas this one provides a good balance between the two styles, bringing in new audiences while providing something fresh for metal fans too. It's coherent too, keeping the mood and energy while still available to swap between the rough and catchy tracks. I like the fusion of genres too. It's mostly speed metal, but it incorporates industrial, hip hop, alt rock, and surprisingly breakbeat too, most prominently in "Eyeless." I do feel it goes too long. The most iconic tracks are in the first third, and there are plenty of highlights mixed later, but they tend to blur together unless you can pick out the ones that stand out. But even then can get tiresome for its 52ish minute length. Unfortunately, "Purity" is missing from some editions which is one of those highlights. I was a huge fan of the epic closer "Scissors" but I can see it's divisive among fans.

Musically, this debut album is nu metal which is heavy metal that combines many other sub-genres of heavy metal. The band created a layered sound of samples, impressive guitar skill, and massive amounts of percussion. It is an extremely heavy and aggressive album. I actually enjoyed this album - specifically the hard percussion that will have you headbanging whether you want to or not - in spite of me not normally liking heavy metal. This is probably the best album from one of the greatest heavy metal bands out there. So if you're a fan of heavy metal and you don't mind some angry, filthy lyrics, than this is an album you should check out!

This was earth shatteringly ground breaking when it came out to my ears and I think it still holds up. It’s particularly unique sound - actually strong songs and atmosphere - I think it’s probably one of the few surviving good albums of its genre. I mean ridiculously over the top anger and silly clown costumes with an overly staffed band - but at the same time churning out a great record… can’t not love it. Maybe the white rapping is a bit naff at times but hey a Time Capsule of embarrassment never killed anyone.
I’ll be honest this is the first album I’m struggling to finish and so I can’t really comment on much of the songs on the back end of this project but this whole experience is a really tough listen. I fully respect Slipknot for the name that they’ve created for themselves as a heavy metal band, even when I was a kid I knew about Slipknot but I had never really heard their music before so I have to say you really have to have a specific taste for this sort of music. I do imagine this to be great gym music though which I might try out at some point but I’m just terms of finishing the album that will come at some other time as I can’t get through it now. I have to give props to the energy of the vocalist as he does not let up, I imagine their live shows are insane, and the instrumentation is fantastic from a technical standpoint as it’s so engaging and just packed full of what you’d want in a death metal album. Despite all this I just don’t find the songs enjoyable, like at all. I feel like you have to be in a very specific mood to listen to this type of music so trying to do so whilst going about my everyday routine was a bit difficult as I think I would’ve rather listened to nothing than have someone screaming in my ear whilst I’m trying to make my lunch. As I said I’ve got respect for the band and the sound they’re achieving it’s just personally not for me however I’m not going to give this a 1 as I can see why people like it as the music is interesting, it’s just not something I’d listen to that’s all.

I didn’t get Slipknot when I got into metal, and I don’t get them now. I hate the percussion and I think their songwriting is pathetic. They wouldn’t know a heavy riff if it bit them in the ass. I don’t like being the guy who hates the mainstreamy stuff- I’ll go to bat for SOAD- but I don’t think there’s anything here for me. Just an annoying hodgepodge of sounds. I’d rate this a get the fuck out of my face.

Oh Slippy-Knotty. I have voiced my disdain for nu metal previously, but the non-polished, aggressiveness of Slipknot's debut is amazing. If Corey Taylor refrains from rapping (like on 'Only One'), then I can actually sort of enjoy this. '(sic)' and 'Wait and Bleed' slaps hard, and Joey Jordison is just monumental on the entire thing. What an absolute beast he was.
I genuinely love Slipknot. Let’s just get that out the way. The live theatricals, the antics, the excessive and monstrous percussions, the energy and the wall of sound provided by the sampling and scratching. It’s all too much - and it’s great. But the thing I love most about the Iowa nonet is their blend of aggressiveness and melodic choruses. And I’m missing a lot of that on their eponymous debut album. It’s mainly just aggressiveness and then some. It starts of strong with everything from “(sic)” until “Spit It Out”. Everything I like about the group is present in almost every moment of that part of the album. Then “Tattered & Torn” kicks in and I lose my focus somehow. I need those strong melodies in order to not get overwhelmed by the hate and anger of the songs. And a lot of the time it’s not present enough on the second part of the record. This is a great blueprint of the monster that Slipknot was to become. But they weren’t quite there yet. It would still be worth a listen because of, if nothing else, the percussive overload. Anyone saying that it’s just a gimmick is lying to themselves.

Whilst I like some of Slipknot's songs I had never actually listened to an album all the way through. After finishing I got what I kinda expected, quite liked some of the songs, others not so much. But then again as I'm not a massive fan of the genre, it would be tough to have a full album of songs I did like. From an objective POV I give it 3/5 for the songs I did like alongside some of the guitar and drums on a few of the songs. (sic) was a highlight as I hadn't heard it before but did like

This was a DNF. The final straw was the "kill me" growl at the start of Tattered & Torn. I like to think I could say something objective about every album but this is way too much for me. There's nothing redeemable about this for me whatsoever

I never really look forward to listening to Slipknot, but I'll be damned if they are not interesting as a band. I do wish they would do more melodic stuff like Wait and Bleed rather than all of the atonal screaming. However, it's really neat to listen to their albums and pick out all of the different musical styles that influencing them. The second song on this album starts with a drum n' bass beat, then proceeds to show that this style of beat fits just fine in metal music. There's clearly a lot of different metal influences in their music, but hip-hop is also influencing their style. The prominence of percussion in their music also makes it compelling to listen to. It's one of those weird situations where, superficially this seems like music I shouldn't enjoy, but there's enough craftsmanship and cool stylistic choices that I find it really compelling as an album, even though there aren't many individual songs that I like on their own 4/5 Iowa represent

I'm not the audience for this. Better than Marilyn Manson. I skipped through in a few minutes to hear the variety of vocal forms and buzzsaw guitars. I’ll only give 1 star if I think it’s atrocious with no musical value, but I can understand the appeal here for the modern thrash metaller.
Slipknot is one of my favorite bands, and listening to this brought back a lot of great memories. I definitely can understand why this kind of music isn't for everyone, but I love it.
Haven’t listened to this since I went through the obligatory Slipknot phase when I was 16. It’s kind of a lot better than I’ve given it credit for over the 20 years that have passed since I loved this. In my mind they’re a band for teenagers. And maybe they are, but I thought it was canny nonetheless. Perhaps it’s because I’ve had 2 hrs sleep and I’m both delirious and in need of something loud! Aggressive, energetic, pounding drums like not much else outside of drum and bass (remember when that was a thing?). That little tune over ‘Tattered and Torn’ was my highlight, weird in a way I cant describe but works class with the heavy backdrop. I could taste the £1 Jagerbombs when Wait and Bleed came on, and I swear my feet stuck to the floor for Spit it Out. Anyway, I’m off for another coffee
Definitely the most dramatic Beatles era, the costumes push boundaries even further than Sgt. Peppers. Content wise it's at odds with their usual message of peace and love, maybe John and Paul were having a bad day, I imagine their masks were chafing. ...Don't mind slipknot in small doses, wait and bleed is a banger but shortly after it I developed 'Slipknot fatigue', it's a bit full on for an extended listen.

Trying too hard to capitalize on stuff that worked for a few famous predecessors; they're totally incompetent at incorporating hip-hop, and the individual horror gimmicks drag on about twice as long as they should. Trying too hard with lyricism as well; ideas aren't unified or cohesive, are just for the rhyme or have no metrical quality at all, and don't seem to respond to or cooperate with the musical changes. Just one thing after another. Some good bones and timbres and more musical skill and awareness of songwriting than most nu metal, but unoriginal and sloppy from the composition to the execution. Goes nowhere.

Not for everyone, but this album absolutely has its moments. Loud. In your face. One of the greatest albums ever? Maybe not, but there are at least 4 very good songs. Great for a workout or on the off chance you need to demo a wall, or smash something.
I didn’t enjoy my time here. Same seems to go for the dudes who made this album. They’re screaming about wanting to die and that just kinda sucks. I liked the drums but really hated everything else. Sorta just all sounds the same. I really thought the drumming was super sick and was definitely the highlight of the album.
I didn't go into this one thinking I would like it that much, but I actually really like the front half-ish from this album. Would recommend if you like metal. Highlights: 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 10.

Biased as I grew up with this and am a slipknot fan. I love this, its gritty, violent and at times beautiful, you can tell they are trying to find their niche so it's not their greatest album (Vol 3 IMO) but it's still great work that goes on a tad too long

Slipknot nails their vibe expertly, probably the pinnacle of the genre. But I don't have this kind of aggression in me needing expression. There's not a lot else on offer, like wit or variety, so overall I found this album pretty tedious. I guess I'm saying I don't like it but I respect it.

Maybe the ultimate nu-metal album? Or is it Toxicity? It's up there with the best of the genre, at the very least. This one dropped like an atomic bomb when it got released, building a bridge between more extreme metal riffs and all the nu-metal characteristics, like a scratch and vocals acrobatics that shifts from agressive to emotional. That spoke a lot to a young and angry generation that weren't finding Marilyn Manson edgy anymore or death metal cool enough.

Year 1999, Slipknot are ready to drop a bomb in the metal world, bringing an innovative, agressive, angry and energetic sound. Corey Taylor directly proves he was an incredible singer by sometimes blasting raw and growling vocals and other times super clean and emotive ones. Joey Jordison shows his machine skills and the adhesion of members like Shawn Crahan was putting on a hell of a show. It's not a perfect album, but it's certainly an important and outstanding one.

This was a tough listen but I did it. Pretty innovative I suppose, but didn’t vibe with it personally at all.
2nd Slipknot album on the list so far, don't think you need two of them on the list. At one time I might have said this one, but my biggest complaint is the poor production and recording, It might have sounded trendy 20 years ago but now it sounds quite dated and bit cheesy. Therefore I think All Hope is Gone might be the better pick, even though this album is more unique and aggressive.

I really hate Slipknot. The drums, like the other Slipknot album, are amazing. But everything else is a dumpster fire and I cannot believe that there are two of these albums on this list when one was way, way to many.
Slipknot blew up when I was already outgrowing my nu-metal phase, so my exposure to them was entirely through their radio singles and edgy imagery. Blending Korn's angst with Manson's shock rock and ratcheting up the white trash didn't do it for me then, and it doesn't do it for me now. It's not the worst album from this era on this list, but it doesn't deserve to be on this list over a Deftones album.

I'm not going to lie I was kind of scared going into this album, not because it's Slipknot, but because I had just gotten a Beatles album the previous day. I'd only head a couple of Slipknot songs prior to this album, so I guess this was my real introduction to Slipknot. I was actually pleasantly surprised. Obviously I wouldn't normally go about my day listening to this, like it isn't something I would listen to it on my own, but for a first listen its not bad. Wow, this album doesn't let you escape. Every once in a while I dip my toe into Slipknot - a couple of these sounded familiar, and I think I was enjoying it for a couple tracks. I get why people are impressed by this. As the album wore on though I just started thinking, does the world need this? Does this music just encourage a kind of toxic disposition that ends up hurting people? Or is it cathartic? I'm not sure. But the feeling I had most while listening to this, was scared.
I already wasted my time listening to one Slipknot album for this project. The fact that there are two Slipknot albums on this list is baffling to me. I can only hope this is the last time they show up. I don't understand why they need so many band members to produce this clown metal.
Oh boy, well I'll try to go into this with an open mind. For a debut and for nu-metal it is a very strong entry. I personally hate nu-metal and think it all sounds like it's trying too hard, but I've heard a LOT worse nu-metal. There are times there is almost an industrial sound going on, and even a few little musical things going on in the background (typically towards the beginning or end) that sound cool, but these are obviously not the main attraction. Regardless, I think they are at least better than Korn.
Not really my thing, but a strong album and an impressive debut. The album is tightly structured in a way that really serves the band's sound well. The songs are generally brief, many coming in under three minutes, with super tight percussion-driven pacing. Yes, it's loud and aggressive, but it moves along briskly and never drags or gets boring. It's also not super hard on the ears compared to a lot of Nu Metal. Apparently Slipknot doesn't like being classified as Nu Metal, with good reason. They're better than most of those bands. Well, I have a lot to say about this album. In the spirit of being charitable, I will say that the music itself is an interesting journey through various subgenres of metal including thrash, death, and speed metal while also experimenting with alternative and rap metal. Slipknot clearly know their genre well. I don't care for the lyrics. There is a lack of self-awareness that is present in other metal artists like Venom's 'Black Metal' album. It's over earnest, overwrought and seems like it's trying to be edgy for edge's sake. There is a way to express alienation, dissatisfaction with society, and overall anger, but this seems to go beyond expression into glorification. Also, the mixing on this album is atrocious. There is a lot going on musically with all of the various layers, but it come out muddled in the mix.
Absolutely brilliant, heavy as hell and twice as loud. They are also the loudest band I have ever seen live. Wait and Bleed woke me each morning for years, on a CD alarm clock, which fairly gets the day started right!
Too much scream
The scary masks and boiler suits are a clever gimmick and large part of Slipknot's huge success, but so is their music. Behind the cartoonish image and superfast drumming, the songs on their debut album pretty catchy and commercial. I quite happily tapped my toe along to this for 40 mins. Throw in a couple of hit singles and you have yourself a good album. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Wait and Bleed Date listened: 13/10/22

I don't like this at all but there's no doubt that it's a great example of the genre.
One song is a good song. The rest is just shouting. I'm too old for this.
Production and monotony kill this one for me – despite some interesting rhythms and instrumentation tricks, the constant onslaught of mid-heavy guitar and screamed vocals just makes this a sonic wash for an hour. Gets tiring quickly and doesn't innovate between tracks enough to maintain interest.

Spanning multiple metal genres, this album is heavily percussive and sample-filled, giving it a creepy, industrial sound. Joey Jordison's blast beats and Corey Taylor's vocal delivery give the album its chaotic, almost frenetic feel. The lyrics are sometimes morbid, often desperate, and generally misanthropic. This album is both incredibly heavy and melodic at the same time, and I struggle to sit still while listening to it. Although it's not my favorite Slipknot album, it's an obvious 5 from me and still gets regular play around here.

I actually knew more songs on this then I thought. It was much better than I expected, but was super long.
oof just terrible, vary hard to listen to a single song all the way through. It just feels like it was written with all the boiling anger and angst of teenage boys in the late 90s, and it's really for them and no one else. Cool drumming I guess. As a gen-x woman, I'm clearly not the audience for this, but I'm not sure there should be a wide audience for this kind of rage. Sometimes I think about all those angry boys from high school wearing Slipknot shirts and I wonder how many showed up to destroy democracy on Jan. 6, ya know?
Listening to this album is like being dumped into an industrial washing machine full of wasps while a banshee screams at you with a dystopian raid alarm going on in the background.
