Kinda borring, but not bad. I may be a pretentious music nerd, but I still enjoy this.

Where California isn’t a setting, but rather an idea about feeling ugly and dark when everything around you is gorgeous and sunny. As we learned from another 1970’s song, it never rains in (southern) California. But man, it pours. We’re always going to fuck up a wet dream. Dreams of land, cocaine, the warm smell of colitas, relationships, cruising the freeway with a drug dealer named The Count, success. The album's theme is how inevitable it is that we’ll destroy everything that's beautiful. And it's the masterpiece from perhaps the most-hated, most-loved band of the past 50 years. This is the sound of a band clicking on all cylinders. A band that finally realized their strengths (their drummer being their best vocalist and songwriter, having now two rock guitar virtuosos in their lineup) and eliminated their weaknesses (Glenn Frey might have been the band’s “leader”, but his vocal skills were better suited to harmonize with Henley and Meisner). It’s Henley’s voice that dominates the album, but Frey, Joe Walsh, and Randy Meisner each get a lead vocal on standout songs. Don Felder, the lone band member who doesn’t get a lead vocal, makes his presence known on two killer songs in particular that he co-wrote: “Victim of Love”, a song he’ll go to his grave believing he was promised was his to sing lead on; and the title track, which wouldn’t be the classic rock staple it continues to be without his incredible guitar work. The guitar “duel” at the end between Felder and Walsh is so incendiary that the band insisted on keeping it unedited on the single, where it went all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Each member’s contribution on that song alone is essential, from Henley’s seething vocals to Meisner’s bassline. Frey especially shines on “New Kid in Town”, the vocal arrangements of which are among my favorites of any song. It’s a pretty song, where the band admits they’re hot shit right now, but they know there’s a slew of rising artists bubbling up on the scene ready to take their place (The Eagles worrying about when all the fun will be over certainly seems like the most Eagles thing ever). Bob Dylan said that Joe Walsh’s “Pretty Maids All in a Row” could be “one of the best songs ever”. I’m not one to judge Dylan’s taste, but I’m all in favor of anything that makes Joe Walsh feel good. But again, the vocal harmonies are nothing short of sensational. When they harmonize like this, I’ll take the Eagles over any band. I’ve always thought of “Try to Love Again” as Meisner’s sequel to “Take It to The Limit”. In my mind, the Eagles aren't the Eagles without Randy Meisner, an exceptional bass player with a high falsetto so breathtaking it eventually became too much for him to perform on a nightly basis (which fits right in with this album's theme now that I think about it). But this is really when Glenn Frey realized it’s best to get out of the way and just let Henley cook. Henley handles the lead vocals on 5 of the albums 9 songs, including the band’s best-known track. Henley's voice is perfect for emphasizing how anything that feels so good comes with a price on “Life in The Fast Lane”, and the album’s closer, “The Last Resort”. And it's on the heart-wrenching, underrated ballad “Wasted Time” where Henley firmly steps out from the drum kit and is allowed to just stand alone and wail. His vocals brim with soul and emotion in his attempt to reach out to a former lover and convince her to accept that it was all worth it, underscored by the quick instrumental reprise that opens Side Two of the album. There’s a reason why Don Henley’s solo career left Glenn Frey’s in the dust. Henley was not only a better songwriter, but a more soulful and interesting vocalist (just listen to Henley’s background vocals on Linda Ronstadt’s cover of “Blue Bayou” for further proof). This is one of my Desert Island Albums. Frankly, any album that an artist can play in its entirety live in front of sold-out crowds is essential. I own this album on practically every format possible, save for 8-Track, because I’m not a monster. The Eagles even got me to buy a remastered 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition, which included a live set from the band at the peak of their powers (listen to that version of the album on your preferred platform). If I could only listen to 10 albums from this list for the rest of my life, this is clearly one of the ten I'd choose.

Hotel california is great, but the guys voice grates on me a bit

Title track is a masterpiece, and the greatest thing this band of white penny-pinching douchebags ever did. I've got a soft spot for Wasted Time too. Rest of the album is immaculately performed, with everything in the right place. But with 0% recklessness, the vital ingredient for a rock band.

A fine collection of songs although many are of their time. The familiarity of the singles provides them with a longevity, plus they are also significantly better than many of the others.

Sheesh - Way more ballads on this one that I know what to do with. It's interesting to see what's classified as rock n' roll over the years. A few of the songs piqued my interest, and you can't help but love the title track. Beyond that though, it felt a little flat and dreary. I guess I had to be there to appreciate it.

Damn good album. Solid from cover to cover. I give it a 4 but I sure as hell wont give it higher than that; out of sheer principle and me fighting my conversion into my father.

I like the rockers on this album (title track, Life in the Fast Lane, Victim of Love), but the ballads all kind of blend together for me.

There is a reason why I only know Hotel California

There are lots of popular songs that I never liked that cause me to change the channel when they are played. There are a handful of songs that I really liked initially but were so overplayed that hearing them now makes me noxious. The two most extreme examples are Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California. If a cab driver were playing Hotel Calif I'd insist he change the music and hope I don't get kicked out of the cab, like The Dude did when he informed the cabbie that he "hates the fucking Eagles". Based on what I originally thought of the title track, the first three songs get the album off to a good start but I find the album drops off considerably after that. Most of the songs following those first three songs are sappy. These include songs like Wasted Time, where the excessive orchestration makes it sappy, and the last three songs on side 2 (although Joe Walsh's guitar solo saves Try and Love Again but the vocal harmonies during the fade can make you forget how good the guitar was.) Three big songs might get a four in some cases but I can't get there.

26X Platinum! What an odd duck I must be! I could barely tolerate the first three (hit) songs back in the day (the title track had a good guitar solo) but the rest is unlistenable. So commercial. Bad 70s rock.

Talk about polarizing groups, lots of 5 and 1 stars here. Ok the single Hotel California is a 800 lb monster gorilla, one of the best rock singles ever, nuff said. But the remainder of the album is over-wrought Dad rock that hasn't aged well. This gets 3 stars only because of the gorilla.

Such a lovely place

A remarkable set of songs from an amazing group of musicians. Trouble is, these songs are so familiar there's almost a sense that I don't need to listen to them any more. Last Resort still kicks all sorts of ass, though.

Classic Eagles, what a good album, love the title track, This is more west Coast Rock than earlier Eagles Country Rock. (Possibly Joe Walsh's Influence?) Life in the Fast Lane, was apparently influenced by a conversation between Glen Frey and a Drug Dealer during a highspeed car ride! Liked the more rockier sound when this came out and Hotel California has to be an all time classic single.

Hotel California and Life In The Fast Lane cement this album in the American psyche. Wasted Time is just one of those lazy ballads. I hear that Parliament synth tone in Pretty Maids All In A Row. The Last Resort is another overly saccharine effort.

Over half this album are radio heavy hitters. The album itself though, meh, doesn't feel like you're listening to an album. It's a lot more sleepy than you'd otherwise think. I'm realizing the Eagles in general have sleepier hits than I thought, and listening to them a bunch in a row, rather than interspersed among heavier songs, actually makes them less interesting and less worth listening to. For what I would expect to be a solid 5-star on the strength of the hit machine this album was, it's more like a collection of singles that don't play that well together. After a front-to-back listen, I'm rating it shockingly low for what I would have predicted.

I got this as my first album on this website and it has me not wanting to continue

First 3 songs have been embedded in my soul since I was a kid. Rest were mostly a pleasant surprise, even if a couple might have been a tad long. 7/10

One of my all time favorites. The addition of Joe Walsh was a real turning point for the Eagles. So many fantastic one-line lyrics and fantastic guitar riffs. An amazing study of American mythology

Was surprised how many songs I’d already heard, but on the whole the rest of the album sort of blended into a less than memorable 70s soft rock blur. It was fine, but didn’t make me feel the need to do more Eagles deep dives.

Hotel California, The Eagles (1976). Listened on 9/16/21, during/after a shower, and again while rating. “Hotel California” the song suffers from being overplayed on classic rock stations, but it’s a good song with good guitar and of course a Steely Dan reference (“stab it with their steely knives”). “New Kid in Town” is almost too slow and almost too country for me, but I’m glad I gave it the time of day. “Life in the Fast Lane” always seemed like a later song to me, probably because I was picturing 1980s yuppies in that car. “Wasted Time” has some Elton John-style vibes at some points, but it doesn’t really land for me. I’m referring to the first “Wasted Time” on the tracklist, as there is a second with an apparently identical title that is more just a symphonic interlude. “Victim of Love” is fine. I’m glad I listened to the album a second time, because I had kind of zoned out during the penultimate two songs and figured I didn’t like them. It was more that they didn’t grab me, but I liked both more on second listen, “Pretty Maids All in a Row” a bit more than “Try and Love Again”. The final song, appropriately “The Last Resort”, is my favorite. I still remember my 11th grade history teacher playing it for us, complete with printed lyric sheet, and highlighting how it corresponded with Manifest Destiny. “She came from Providence,” he quoted, making the analogy that proponents saw it as fate-given, God-given, but, boom, the line is immediately followed by “the one IN RHODE ISLAND” he emphasized: it’s just people coming from the East Coast. Listen, they clearly know their way around a song or two. But it is truly all so... perfunctory. Where's the passion lads? Where's the unusual turns? It's all very pleasant. Very competently crafted. Don't get me wrong, music needs its craftsmen - so actually maybe crafted is the wrong word - it's competently designed. Like an Ikea table. As an Ikea table will serve its purpose for people who understand a table is necessary and just want it to put their plates and vases on, so the Eagles serve a purpose as music for people who don't need their music to do anything more than be music.

Instructive listening for a Warren Zevon fan. I now understand how much of his 70's output was an Eagles piss-take. But that's just another instance of the anti-Eagles sentiment I've been surrounded by forever. From the Dude's antipathy in The Big Lebowski to Zevon's jokes to Elizabeth Nelson's article in The Ringer earlier this year (so good!), the message has been loud and frequent: This Is A Not Good Band. Yet always with the not-at-all-confusing rider: Except They Kind Of Are. Now I've taken the plunge, consider me still confused. I mean, they're exceptional players. Dependably harmonic and pretty much faultless in all things song construction. They rip through solos like a crisp lettuce leaf, even rhyme well every so often. And it all happens within a synthesised country-rock aesthetic so polished you could go blind looking at it. But you might also go dumb listening to it, because even though there's more than a little to enjoy (have you heard the title track, by the way--although what is that accent he's doing?!) the emotional girding is always big dick bathos. Whatever they have to say (mostly gripes about women and some laurel canyon mysticism mixed with LA grit) it's all couched in self-pity--none of it self-reflective or self-critical. Twas ever thus with dudes who love their instruments as extensions of their egos.

Very hard to decide the rating here. No doubting that there are some 5 star tracks (wasted time, new kid in town, pretty maids) but for some reason the album doesnt blend into a 5 star experience for me and I'm not sure why.

50% absolute classics, 50% slightly above average middle-of-the-road rock.

Was pretty familiar with this album before this generator, and my opinion hasn't changed all that much. Title track never gets old, I still love Life in the Fast Lane even if it is a little corny, Wasted Time is good even if a little too singsongy. It probably is a little overrated and it feels too long, enough to the point that the concept album appeal loses me, but it's still a cohesive and fun listen. Enjoyed seeing all the global reviews reference that Big Lebowski quote about the Eagles Already Saved: Hotel California; Life in the Fast Lane; Wasted Time Saved After Listening: New Kid in Town, Victim of Love*, The Last Resort

The Dude said, "I hate the f*ckin Eagles, man!" But this album is alright. I always wondered why the Dude hates the Eagles. I mean, they seem laid back like him. Maybe he had a bad experience. Or maybe they're too corporate. Maybe they're "a buncha a$$holes" like Metallica (he did roadie for them). Whatever the case, the guitar solo on the title track is worth the price of admission even though they stole the chord progression from Jethro Tull. (Maybe the Dude is a Tull fan...)

This album gets 4 starts solely because of hotel California. Life in the fast lane is also a classic but None of the other songs on the album were of the same caliber. Very strange but glad this made it to the list

Here’s a familiar face! Will there be more on here than Hotel California? Yes, I obviously recognize “Life in the Fast Lane” as well. Not too many other standout tracks for me, but hard to deny this overall. It just goes down so smooth. I feel like Hotel California is a meme at this point, maybe even was then, but you gotta love it. Favorite tracks: Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, Victim of Love. Album art: Total classic, iconic cover. A pretty beautiful and dreamy picture, and the neon elevates it to something special. No problems here. 3.5/5

I fucking love the eagles, man.

“Hotel California” by the Eagles (1976) “Hotel California” is a prime teaching example of what can make an “album” great. It delivers excellent performances of inspired songs by gifted artists, with state of the art production. All that is a given. But the temptation with this recording is to deal with it as a mere collection of songs, with ‘hits’ and ‘misses’, and to ignore the conceptual unity that holds it all together (even in the reprise of “Wasted Time” as you turn the LP over from side one to side two). Here’s a record with brilliantly brooding thematic cohesion. It powerfully declaims its main topic: the dark side of the American ‘paradise’—a darkness that nevertheless resolves into redemptive hope by the album’s end (but not without a well deserved prophetic dig at a misguided American version of pop Christianity). This is a sermon in sound. Lyrically, there are multiple levels of meaning in virtually every line. Don't let anyone tell you a given expression means ‘x’ or ‘y’ or ‘z’. It probably means all three and more (the song “Hotel California” is notorious for spawning countless hermeneutical ‘certainties’). These lyricists (primarily Henley, Frey, Walsh, and Meisner) were all intelligent enough to be aware of the referential overtones. Take, for example, the clause “She came from Providence", the opening line in the closing track “The Last Resort”. Songwriters Henley and Frey explicitly tell us in the next line “It’s the one in Rhode Island”, but it’s not just a meaningless reference to a random city. Do they really want us to ignore why Roger Williams (in 1636) named it “Providence“ in the first place? It was a testimony to the fact that God has mercifully provided what is good, true, and beautiful. Now this is a theological datum which, admittedly, got transmogrified in history into pseudo-pious sloganeering like “Manifest Destiny” and “Go west, young man!”. But in what other country could you get rich by calling that out? Despite America’s record of huge injustices and flaws, scores of millions have striven to get here, and still do, with no end in sight. Carly Simon was also right (in “Let the River Run”): “We, the great and small/Stand on a star/And blaze a trail of desire/Through the dark'ning dawn.” Contrast the flip side of this same coin as the Eagles deride the namers of ‘paradise’ who watch “the hazy sun, sinking in the sea.” The Eagles (Check the symbolism of the group’s name) are well aware of this tension, and have put it to good use in the pursuit of their music and their successful careers. And later in “The Last Resort” they ask “Who will provide the grand design?” We know intuitively. Patience and Providence are both rightly attributed to God who loves. The Eagles employ a variety of compositional styles, from the unique flamenco rock of the title track, to their signature country rock (“New Kid in Town”), to jazz rock (“Wasted Time”, beautifully symphonized in the reprise), power riff rock (“Life in the Fast Lane”), stadium rock (“Victim of Love”), with elements of blues rock, folk rock, and protest rock. But it all rocks. And it’s all harnessed in service of expressing the sadness, disappointment, fear, and disillusionment in the main theme. Vocally, this gang would be a choir director’s delight—and also his nightmare. With widely different timbres and projection styles, these five tenors pound their voices into a unified blend that is magical (“Try and Love Again”). Vocal solos consistently demonstrate the fruitful labors of singers who potently evoke within their limitations. Are they better than CSNY? On this album, yes. Listen to “Pretty Maids All in a Row” and tell me how one could put a more perfect choral texture behind the voice of Joe Walsh—Joe Walsh, folks! Instrumentally, the Eagles show stunning virtuosity, from innovative percussion arrangements (Henley) and bass lines (Meisner) to the splendid guitar work by three masters (Felder, Frey, and Walsh). And the guys in the control booth did their part, with skill application of effects. This is a near perfect collaborative product. If you haven’t yet heard this album when it comes time to die, you should apply for an extension. 5/5

After listening the first time, I was a but underwhelmed because of Hotel California and Life in The Fast Lane being overplayed. However, the 3rd listen through I got it. Wasted Time and Victim of Love are my two favorites. Try and Love again is magical

It was great the first half of the album, but become less engaging in the second half. It is still a nice album to listen to however. Stripped down instrumentals and vocals are a great sound.

Hotel California, Eagles:7/10 The title track is a certified classic for good reason. Iconic guitar riffs and solos, singalongable lyrics, plus danceable drums and fantastic production all make this song infinitely replay-able. “New Kid in Town” is very catchy with vocal harmonies that are like candy to the ears. “Life in the Fast Lane” starts out with one of the most iconic guitar riffs of all time, and doesn’t get any less good throughout the entire song. “Wasted Time” is a surprisingly sentimental soft rock balled that’s quite good, if not a little dramatic. “Wasted Time (2.0) is a beautiful stringed instrumental that serves as a nice interlude before the next half of the album. “Victim of Love” is a solid track, but maybe lacks a bit of the emotion or energy of some of the previous tracks. “Pretty Maids All in a Row” is a pleasant sounding piano balled where the Eagles once again show off their talent for harmonies. “Try and Love Again” isn’t anything too special, but still a solid song, albeit it might stretch a little longer then it needs too. “The Last Resort” is a fitting ending to the album, combining aspects of what I thought were the best parts about the album as a whole. Conclusion: Classic album, an absolute powerhouse for the entire first half, but maybe loses its momentum in the second section.

If the rest of album was as good as “Life In The Fast Lane” and “Hotel California” we’d have a 5 here but sadly the rest of it is just okay to me. Solid 3.

So far I actually rather enjoy this album. Though I don't really like the actual song Hotel California because I hear it all the time and it has become a bit repetetive. I like the album, and some of the songs are rather neat. I like the variety.

Most of this is so familiar that it now sounds quite cliched, but it’s a collection of good tunes nonetheless.

I have such a strange relationship with this band. Absolutely recognize and appreciate the talent they have and work they put in. Vocal harmonies are incredible. But most of their songs...sorry, I just don't get pulled in by them. Totally get why they are revered; just not by me.

One of the best albums ever!

I like the fantasticalness of the hotel, like the way it's described and the feel of it and that, the spookyness of the fact that you can't leave (is that a metaphor?). This kind of slow rock isn't really a genre I connect with in general so didn't get a lot of the album, but I do like the storytelling aspect of it.

I love this album, Reminds me of driving through the Dales from our caravan in Ingleton at dusk with the windows open, playing at full blast

Yes, love The Eagles. Although that's long past, they used to be my favorite band for a while and I even had a t-shirt with this album art. The guitar-work on this album is fantastic throughout and I consider the title-track nothing short of a masterpiece. My criticism would be that the album is a bit too ballad-heavy and that those ballads can tend to the kitschy side. I'd prefer less "Wasted Time" and more "Life in the Fast Lane". Or if their calmer songs would all be like "The Last Resort" (my second favorite track of the album) there would be absolutely nothing to complain about.

The Eagles will always be a standby for a few good jams and the rest of the album being listenable but bland

Terrible.

Almost everyone knows of this band and the same would go for at least two of the tracks on this album. I honestly find it hard to believe anyone could actually dislike these songs. They might be a little too familiar and yes you’ve probably heard the hits way too much...but it’s surprising how much you can still enjoy them once you decide to sit and listen again. They are comforting & homely and no doubt raise various emotions for just about every person. Ultimately though, you know what you’re getting and it’s absolute in it’s promise...but isn’t that really what we all long for every now and then? 4 Stars!

Hotel California by The Eagles. This is some archetypical dad rock and I am unapologetically loving it. Similarly to a few of the albums that we have experienced so far, we kick off with a banger. The title track and an absolute classic, Hotel California slowly guides you into the LP with a gentle rock ballad including a soaring chorus punctuated with lovely little guitar licks and a classic rock guitar solo. I was expecting the second tune to be a big rocky blast but surprisingly out came the soft and easy listening 'New Kid in Town' which I actually really liked. As the 2nd tune came to a close, I started to wonder if this album really was going to be one for fathers to listen to whilst dropped their kids to school. It turns out that it was; even down to the name 'Life in the Fast Lane'. The Eagles 3rd track gives us a big guitar riff to kick us off and nod our heads to. However, it doesn't last long as 'Wasted Time' brings us back down with a very slow but lovely tune mostly orchestrated with piano, including an orchestral 'part 2' lasting a minute afterwards. 'Victim of Love' almost made me wet myself laughing as we blast straight back into some solid guitar riffs from the get-go and provides us with a power ballad feel. 'Pretty Maids...' and 'Try and Love...' were both less full-on rock with gentle but quality tunes to enjoy and smooth us into the end of the album. 'The Last Resort' (we see what you do did there) is a 7-minute creeper that slowly builds and builds as we enjoy the soft piano at first that builds up, drops again and then fills our ears with a loud orchestral finish. I was maybe expecting a couple more loud rocky numbers but I'm not disappointed with that. Thoroughly enjoyed throughout.

It's the music business, and business is GOOOOD. The Eagles deliver a masterclass 9 slide Power Point presentation on music as a multi-generational investment strategy. Was Woodstock a bit scary? Did the Summer of Love go too far? Do you wanna lay down in the SoCal sunshine with Henley/Frye? Do you prefer khakis? EAGLES. They defined 70s California rock. They wrote hook after hook. Walls of vocal harmonies. This record shines like a perfect stack of gold bricks. New Kid in Town is a near-perfect song. The double guitar solos on Hotel California are iconic. The OOoooOOOs on Wasted Time are heavenly. It's too easy to hate the Eagles. It's too easy to like the Eagles. I can accept music and greed living side by side. It's a great album. B

Ah, The Eagles, AKA, music for hillbillies to fuck to. I don’t care what anyone says, Hotel California is an amazing song—reggae, country, classic rock, dual soloing guitars, great build up and climax. I don’t care if it’s not about anything and it’s a made up place. But, alas, you can’t give a 5 for just one song. After Hotel California you’re fucking hyped then you get the proto-margaritaville trash in New Kid in town and it instantly goes from a 5 to a 3. Then you get Life in the Fast Lane, great hook, drum beat, and your back, it’s at least a 4 now. Then the rest of the album happens and it has four too many love ballads. You get a momentary reprieve with Try and Love. As much as I want to give this album a 4 for two songs, I can’t. The Eagles are a best of band, their best album is their best of album, they can’t pull together a full album that is great, even with the addition of Joe Walsh. This album shines in fleeting moments, but the rest is just Dusty Springfield and therefore It’s a 3 for me.

What else can be said about the Eagles that hasn't already been said? Obviously the title track is great. The rest of the album is uninterestingly solid. Do you think Hotel California is the most-played radio song of all time? If I let my mind wander I could almost convince myself I had just flipped the radio on to 102.5 fm. Does anyone care about the Eagles' other albums? Does any other album than Hotel California even matter? Are we living our own lives or just trapped in a simulation? Hotel California is sign, signified, and signifier. Simulacra and simulation of a shared experience that we all never really experienced. You can never check out and you can never leave.

This album exceeded my expectations, I thought previously that Eagles had only a few hits but this album is full of tunes. I especially liked New Kid in Town, Try and Love Again and obvs Life in the Fast Land and Hotel Califonia.

Yes yes, very versatile album for 1976 and named after one of the greatest rock songs of all time and that song actually features as the first track on this album which is a great coincidence.

Aside from a few half decent songs I’d always discounted the Eagles as boring, middle of the road, country-rock. On the evidence of this album I was probably right to do so. Title track drags the album up to 2 stars.

Actually pretty good overall, but the weakest song is the second and right after the title track so it feels like it drops sharply. Life in the Fast Lane was pretty good, hadn't heard that before.

The 3ist of 3's I ever did see

The Eagles start these little reviews. Which is quite apt, really, as one of my earliest memories of being in a record shop is picking up an Eagles CD (not knowing who they were) and trying to convince my mum to buy me it. She didn't. Anyhow, I know a fair few songs from this album - who doesn't? - but somewhat surprisingly have never listen to the thing as a whole. It reminds me a little of get-togethers my parents would have with their friends around our house when I was little. A seven or eight year old me would sit on the stairs in my pyjamas, hoping they'd let me down and have a piece of cake, and some of these Eagles records would be part of a compilation that played, drowned out by the chatter. Historical hangovers aside, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it on a run through the woods. This ain't my typical cup of tea music wise if I'm honest, but you can't doubt the ability and talent on offer and I can admire that. Hotel California might be a little overplayed but wow, it is still some record.

Now this is what I call Dad™️ Music. Good stuff, but there is some self-loathing required to like it.

This is one of the first albums I recall as a kid. There isn't a lot of depth but it's pretty good for just chilling. It'll never make my regular rotation, but I like it and how it takes me back to the 70s as a kid.

A couple classics, but pretty average other than that.

the title track's legendary status is deserved. the rest of the album just feels like exposed chest hair, wide collars, gold chains, and feathered hair. like a bunch of other albums in this list, it just screams of its time. for me, in this case, it's not something i love.

I was only really familiar with the more mellow of their songs, so I didn't realize they used so much electric guitar. Also, they definitely have an 80s sound, though this is a 70s album.

Okay so obviously I’m familiar with the hits on this one... Hotel California, New Kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane.... all a little corny imo. Hotel California has some undeniably delicious riffs in it but Life in the Fast Lane is just the worst. I never realized how much of a concept album it was until actually listening to the whole thing front to back. There’s definitely a story being told here. I can imagine when this came out everyone lost their minds because it’s a bit cinematic. Victim of Love is kinda sexy too. This album lost to Rumours for album of the year in 1976 and it makes sense. I don’t think that Hotel California stands the rest of time the way Rumours does. I did save Try and Love Again though because it’s hitting all those sweet nostalgic spots for me. It sounds more like the country rock of their last album, One of These Nights. I guess that chalks it up for me- their rock n roll efforts don’t stand up to their peers of the time, but they do country rock soooo well and that’s what I show up for when it comes to the Eagles. The Last Resort is a really good ending to this album! It’s about how we don’t take care of our big beautiful planet. The strings add a lot of grandiosity. Again, super cinematic. If I had been drinking wine I probably would have started crying. It’s crazy to think people were talking about saving our environment in 1976 and we’re still not doing enough about it 45 years later. All in all, I always appreciate concept albums and this one was a good one. It felt somewhat like a goodbye to the 60s and 70s. The opening is strong, the track list is in the right order, and it ends on a beautiful bittersweet note. Well crafted and I would probably reach for it more if I had more of an emotional connection to it.

Meh... it hasn't aged well for me. So middle-of-the-road, so massaged, I found the second half to drag to the point that I was treating it like supermarket music... which, when I think about it, is where I mostly hear Eagles these days. Highlights are the title track and Life in the Fast Lane.

2/5. I get it, it's capital G great and is the provenance of most rock ballads. But it just sounds like all other rock ballads after it which makes for an uninteresting listen.

It is a very chilling album

Mellow rock started here. The warm smell of colitas, rising through the air. The Eagles have the highest selling ‘best of’ album because of their steady even flow of songs. They can also rock out, as evidenced by Victim of Love. Glenn Frye has a smooth voice and Joe Walsh can slam the guitar. In a world of British rock, the American Eagles stand out.

Amazing what adding a member can do. Way more rock than previous efforts, but still pretty ballad heavy. Gorgeous harmonies, as always. Last track ("The Last Resort") could have been left off the record; it's a little preachy. Favorite tracks: "Hotel California", "Wasted Time", "Try and Love Again"

Despite myself, I still have a soft spot for the title track. But after that, the album is just pop rock. Competent, sure, but overwrought, especially when the Eagles try to include strings or keys in the arrangement. Stick to something that has a little soul to it.

On the better end of the rock trends of the late 70s. Lyrics are a little cringey in general and the instrumentation and guitar solos overwrought at times, but still has character, good singing, and strong melodies. The flow from theme to theme within songs is a little jumbled at times, and isn't very sonically or conceptually cohesive. I also think the album isn't as playful as it could be; it takes itself a little too seriously. This album seems to exist in the strange in-between from classic rock of the earlier 70s to the soft rock/metal of the 80s - its a reflection of its time, but not always in a bad way. Not really to my taste, but I can see why a lot of people like it! Definitely good driving music, not the greatest for a standalone listen. 2.5 but I'm feeling generous so I rounded up.
