Not very interesting. Why is this in here?
It's classic rock, and plenty of big hitters, but just kinda boring and plain for me.

Completely front loaded. Title track is great as is “Life in the fast lane”. New kid in town is fine. The rest is completely forgettable. This album is on the list for the 2 songs I listed above and that’s it
Thoroughly mediocre and forgettable. The title track is decent but also massively overrated. The rest is just a 100% unremarkable collection of songs.

I've never listened to an Eagles album start to finish before and as a result it feels a bit dated to me. Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane are the standouts. Rest of it felt a bit bland.

2.5 I feel like Eagles are one of those groups that public opinion has shifted a bit on in recent years. Like, despite being one of the biggest rock bands ever and having the single best-selling greatest hits album of all-time (and third best-selling album overall), I just don’t feel like you see a lot of Eagles fans anymore. You could make the argument that that’s bound to happen with any musical group as time passes, but in my experience, you still see fans of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, etc. floating around and preaching about them online, even among the Gen Z crowd, but you don’t really see anyone raving about Eagles anymore. And honestly, I think it’s because we’ve all come to the conclusion that their music is kind of lame and wasn’t really all that groundbreaking or influential after all. Or maybe that’s just how I feel, and I’m projecting here, either way, I didn’t really care for this album. Ok, don’t get me wrong, Hotel California is a fantastic track - There’s an iconic guitar hook to it, a well-crafted build-up, a great set of lyrics (“You can check out any time you want/But you can never leave”), and an absolutely amazing guitar solo. Honestly, I love this song and think it’s really the only claim to put forward as Eagles being a monumental group - but man, nothing else on this album sounds anything like that. Like wtf, Hotel California is followed by a country track? Who the hell’s idea was that? That track is at least followed by Life on the Fast Lane, the second best track on the album by default, but even then, it’s not a song I really care for. Despite its name, I don’t find it particularly interesting or exciting, especially being that I almost exclusively now associate the song with Cedar Point’s fastpass system, Fast Lane. No idea if they still use the song to promote it, but I swear you used to hear the chorus about every five minutes walking around the park. Not much else to comment on from there. The fact they named two songs the exact same thing is fun and not at all annoying or confusing, and the closing track The Last Resort was a pretty uneventful and slow way to end things on. The title track saves this thing from bad territory, but overall, mid across the board. I swear the only reason this album is regarded as iconic and sold so well is because it was riding the coattails of Their Greatest Hits, and it was from an era where if you just wanted to hear one song, you had to buy the whole damn thing (yes, I know singles existed, but you had to wait 2.5 months after this dropped if you wanted to own the title track).
Not the worst. I had heard several before. Sounds more of what my parents would listen to tbh.

This album is a lot of fine with a couple of great songs mixed in. A bit too soft rock for me all-around. (Also impossible for me not to see The Dude being annoyed.)
I hate the song Hotel California…so I endured.
It's hard for me to approach this album objectively. The problem I have with it is that these songs have been played to death. I'm sick of hearing them; sick of talking about how the Eagles sound "pretty". Its ethos is soooo 70s. By the time the 90s came along, I had completely moved on.
Another case of bloated single accompanying album
Gets a 2 just for Hotel California, and the only other track I know Life in the Fast Lane. Based on the rest of this album, I don’t understand the hype for The Eagles.

One star for the title track, the reast really isn't my cuppa. Smells of football dads living it up while also reassuring themselves that they have feelings, too.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this album all the way through. That’s probably true of most Eagles’ albums, honestly. All Eagles albums? Well let’s do this! Hotel California - great song! Jesus I’ve heard this a bazillion times. I don’t even have to hear it and pops into my head. I don’t even have to listen to it and I can review it. Honestly, if I never hear this song again I’d be happy. Maybe take a 10 year break or something. I have to comment on the supernatural, almost Satanic panic quality of this song. Trapped in some kind of ghostly ethereal hell. If you told me that the Eagles has sold their souls to the devil I’s believe you. Every one knows easy rock is the devil’s music. The Occult was Real, son. It was definitely a different era back then. “Haven’t had that spirit since 1969.” That line gets creepier with each passing year. Maybe 20 years ago this was 5/5, but now really overplayed. I mean it’s a punchline in a Marvel movie. 4/5 New Kid In Town - yacht rock! 2/5 Life In The Fast Lane - this whole album has to be about drugs? Right? This song’s a barn-burner, and the lyrics are just fantastic. 3/5 Wasted Time - I’ve never heard this song. For an Eagles song that’s crazy. Is it going to suck? I’ll admit I’ve got trepidations. Eh, no Desperado, but it isn’t actively terrible. Kind of amazed actually. Could have been a hit if it hadn’t been surrounded by other, better hits. 2/5 Wasted Time (Reprise) - maybe they thought this was the hit. Terrible idea to add this thing in. Actively detracts from the previous track. 0/5 Victim of Love - I mean I don’t have much to say other than 2/5. It’s fine. Just fine. For some reason I thought it was better. Pretty Maids All In A Row - Joe Walsh singing! Was Don Henley on a cocaine bender? Who knows. This is a snooze-fest. And kinda dumb. 1/5 Try and Love Again - Henley’s still on a bender but this one has a bit of the Eagles magic. 2/5 The Last Resort - oh boy, this pretty much sucks. Holy Christ it makes me wanna jam forks in my ears. Henley should have just hung out with his dealer. 0/5 2nd half really nose-dives. I mean it’s Hotel California and then everything else. That’s pretty expected. HC really is the Eagles’ best song by a country mile. Some of them get close but HC is just one of the greatest songs of the 70s. How do you compete with that? I’m giving this one a 2/5.
Over produced and boring.
Listened Before? No Back to the Eagles again... This time with the album that defined them as rock mega-stars. Album opens on pop rock anthem Hotel California. I've always interpreted it as an elongated metaphor for addiction, its temptations / availability, and how it separates people from other things that they love ("bring me my wife [...] we haven't had that spirit here since 1969", "you can checkout any time you'd like, but you can't never leave"). For all the crap the Eagles get, and for all the pain this song has brought to cover bands and karaoke bars alike, I would be remiss not to admit this as a timeless jam. Beautiful, languid structure; effective lyrics; and a serviceable guitar solo, breakdown. Apparently New Kid in Town was the lead single; odd that I've never heard it before. Odd choice of single to me. This song is a crappy country rock ballad, with surgical sounding drums. To be fair, the harmonization is nice and some of the guitar licks are nice. But this is a quick skip for me on any given day. On the other hand, Life in the Fast Lane is my favorite Eagles song of all time. Very 70s dad-rock vibe about it that openly compares to ZZ Top. I just enjoy the propelling nature of it and that guitar hook is :cheff-kiss: Wasted Time is another snore-worthy ballad. I mean, the orchestral elements and reprise are fine and all, but seems weird to put this after Life in the Fast Lane. Anyway, I've lost steam to care about this album now that I'm at Pretty Maids in a Row. This album was not made for me. The album starts with a lot of steam between Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane, but is otherwise devoid of reason to listen. I'm a 2 / 5 with really the only points gained by those two tracks. Otherwise, this just ain't it for me. Added to Library? No
Hotel California? More like Hotel Calibornia. Hahahaha the Eagles lost yesterday this is perfect. Let’s see if this has anymore heat to it than Philly’s offense last night. Starts off with probably the most popular Eagles song as the title track. For all the times I’ve heard this it still holds up pretty well. What a snoozer of a second song. Next. Life in the Fast Lane is another popular one. Solid track. Maybe someday I’ll find that Wasted Time is not a waste of time, but that day is not today. Enjoyed the reprise a bit more tbh. Victim of Love I’ve heard but doesn’t really go anywhere minus that one solo. Honestly the second half of this album sucks to me. Eagles can make some solid hits but I’ve yet to hear a whole really good album. So meh.

the album didn't feel stronger than its title track. i wish i had more to say, but it fell flat in a way i was not expecting, and i found myself ignoring it.

I gave this a fair shot, but it didn't do much for me. Hotel California is a decent song, though pretty played out. Life in the Fast Lane is tiresome to listen to. The rest of the album just kind of reminded me of bad CSN&Y songs, the best of which is maybe The Last Resort...best in that it sounds to me the least like the Eagles.
The Eagles just aren't very good. This one does have a handful of decent singles though, so that's something. The rest... nah 2/5
Very average
Being a musician in the 60s/70s must've been so cool, all you needed was to write a single banger (hint: it's the title track) and now your entire album gets recognised forever after as a rock classic, just because that one song is now repeating endlessly on every boomer rock radio station. Doesn't matter how entirely uninteresting all those other songs are, it's now an essential album that everyone must listen to. Why? Who cares! Just slurp up that radio rock slop you peasant!
One song album

2 - Boy, this was rough. The first two songs are good. The rest was soooo damn boring. It was all so sappy and limp, I hated it. I understand maybe one or two sappy songs, but the rest of the album after the first two songs is like that. It was aggravating. I didn't get to listen to the last couple minutes of the last song during my listening session, but I highly doubt those couple minutes would affect my rating, so I'm not gonna bother finishing it. Could have been a 2.5 or maybe even a 3, but the majority of this album sucked ass, so I'm leaving it at a 2. Better than the other Eagles album I listened to, but not by much.
No, you don't need to redirect my attention to the rock history books that this record was massively successful and impactful on pop culture. I get it, 'Hotel California' and a couple of the other tracks are iconic, but to my ears the remainder of the record is bland, trite and corny. Let's go back in time and split this album into a couple of EPs instead so I can rate them as a '3' and a '1'.

I am just going to start this off by saying- it's not bad, but holy shit Hotel California is overplayed. I am so damn tired of listening to Hotel California on the radio over and over again- and those who rate it highly, usually have hollow music taste. sorry. :/ the song 'Hotel California' leans the most heavily into the 'pop-surfer-rock' genre while toting the country rock genre. Not my steeze, but ill probably still sing to it just because its silly to make fun of. The rest of the album flops back and forth between the soft and the brash. I will give it credit for this diversity at best.
I’m on board with the title track being a classic and it’s kind of epic. Otherwise, the ballads on this album really don’t do anything for me I’d say I only really liked a few songs. Life in the Fast Lane was fun. Overall, I don’t really dig soft rock, I guess.
Thoughts whilst listening: Released in 1976! It's got Hotel California on it! You know, from Guitar Hero. This has got that sleazy, polished, string-section-y, feel of what I remember was on the radio in the seventies. Makes me think of the era of that Convoy song and Song for Guy by Elton John and I'm Not in Love by 10cc. That sort of stuff. And that stuff doesn't really chime for me unless I'm in a very specific mood. Maybe if it was on the soundtrack of a Paul Thomas Anderson film I'd get into it in an ironic hipster way. Did anyone see Licorice Pizza? I really got into Let Me Roll It by Wings off of that soundtrack. What a tune! Would it be wrong to say this way Country and Western Beatles with a bit of Disco? I dunno. I'm sort of getting into it and the seventies vibe as it goes along and I think back to the time. It's undeniably rich with musicality, key changes, guitar solos, all that. But I don't think I'll listen to it again. It's just a cultural thing. I'm more likely to listen to Saturday Night by Whigfield, not because it's BETTER, but just because it has more cultural meaning to me, personally. I dunno. I'm sort of vibing with it* as we get toward the end. Try And Love Again has a kind of Neil Young feeling to it. And you have to remember that the Eagles brought about the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy theme tune. Okay, I'm really looking forward to The Last Resort ending now so I can play Let Me Roll It. And then by Saturday Night by Whigfield and Convoy by C.W. McCall. UPDATE: I really know nothing about The Eagles so was checking out there other albums afterwards and I think I'm going to be the "I prefer their earlier stuff" guy. "Take It Easy"? "Desperado"? "Journey of the Sorcerer" That's more like it! *As the young people say.
Probably don't need another Big Lebowski quote on here so we'll skip that. This album is...fine. The title track is great but even that I normally skip when it comes up on a playlist or the old fashioned radio. I confess that I had never actually listened to this whole album, and I don't feel like I ever will again. Victim of Love was the only other song I really liked on this album and I'm not sure I had ever actually heard it before. I have Life in the Fast Lane with a passion. In the end, this is The Eagles and I'm just not a fan.

Everyone loves Hotel California, it's reputation speaks for itself. New Kid in Town is just okay in my mind, it's forgettable and a little lacking in substance. It kind of strikes a similar chord to Billy Joel's Updown Girl except more somber. Life in the fast lane starts out better and gives me memories of 5 guys visits. Vocals are again, lacking in substance and for me. It feels like music from a by-gone era, possibly something that would reverberate quietly in the bathroom of a BBQ restaurant. Wasted time is exactly what the title states. A reminiscent song for which I have no times to reminisce on. Guitar carries the vocals the enitre time. Orchestral variant is significantly better. Victim of Love was not my style at all. Pretty Maids all in a Row had promise, I thought it was going to be my favorite until the vocals came in. He alternates between too loud and too quiet, while trying to mimic the nasal quality of an electric guitar. Try and love again had some good parts, the ending made me turn my volume down though. Last resort was a better ending. Well put together and I enjoyed it. Second place to hotel California.
My dad likes the eagles, and maybe it's the nostalgia/thinking its old but I definitely think its over-hyped. Hotel California the song is iconic, but I don't really care for anything else they've done.

I can see why the Eagles are one of my grandparents' favorite bands. None of the songs really caught my attention, but they weren't unpleasant. Seems like my tastes aren't specialized enough to appreciate their talent. Not sure if eponymous track stands out because there is something different about it, or because it is the most popular. 4.5/10
I wouldn't have ever chosen to listen to the whole album without prompting. The album was alright but certainly not one of my favorites.
i have never liked this band. in my opinion, you would be hard pressed to find a band more overrated than the eagles. and listening to this album did not change my opinion. the music of the eagles is soulless corporate schlock. it is southern rock without the balls. and even when it tries to be “heavy”, like in the song “victim of love”, it falls short. in fact, the only thing remotely interesting about this band is that it is mostly comprised of what used to be linda rondstadt’s backing band. in short, if you want to listen to southern rock, listen to the real deal, bands like skynyrd and allman brothers. stay away from this shite.

I had a rough night, and I hate the fucking Eagles, man.
The thought of seeing an Eagles album, knowing that it would be here for sure was kinda scary... I decided to dive right into it, using my AirPods. Glad I did, cause I can actually hear the production. Listening to these songs again sound daunting, so put on some great headphones and try to hear it differently. Hearing these songs again on a random radio station is a quick press to turn off. Done. With headphones, it's much better, maybe moved it up a 1/2 star. Except for the title track, New kid in town, and Life in the Fastlane, this album is horrible.

I know the Eagles are meant to be evil, but had somehow never got round to listening to their main record. Greatly disappointed by the lack of the diabolic. Instead, I found patchy, occasionally enjoyable pastiche. Some poor Neil Young vocal impressions early on offset by the strange transition in "...Fast Lane" from ZZ Top to, christ, I don't know what, disco synth? The lyrics didn't linger, apart a mention of "shadows coming to stay", with or without Cliff Richard not mentioned, which would have had material impact on their already respectable coke bill. Later, I looked up the lyrics. Dear crike they’re awful.
The famous songs are the good ones. Last song is truly awful. Polar opposite of Rumors - here the bad reputation is well-deserved

I guess my dad wasn't much of a fan. I don't remember him ever playing the Eagles. Now I know why. This album sucks. I can't help but have a soft spot for the classic rock radio hits, but the rest of this album is pretty shit. I really enjoy some countrified rock music, vocal harmonies, and guitar solos. I even love me a lot of soft rock, but holy shit, the songwriting and choices here are horrible. It isn't outwardly abrasive, so there's that. The production is good. Try and Love Again is a decent enough soft rock song, but the whole run of Wasted Time>Reprise>Victim of Love before it is just embarrassingly bad. The Last Resort ends this album perfectly - on another terrible note. 1 point for production, 1 point for the hits, 1 point for Try and Love Again, and 1 point for the fact that I was able to sit through the whole thing. I listened to this on vinyl, and I posted it for sale on Discogs as soon as it was done. 4/10
I knew going into this project that albums like this would come up. Songs that were all over the radio, at shops, at parties, songs that I hated and couldn't avoid. CCR, Queen, Eagles, Led Zep. Classic Rock. Urrghh. Skilled guitar playing - points for that. Nice solos. But it's the ultimate cocaine fueled cliche overblown dad rock. This is why we have punk music.
Too bland for me
Songs are either totally epic or totally bland. I guess a couple bangers carry the rest of the trash.
Titular track was overplayed during my 'drinking days' so I skipped it. The rest didn't really do anything for me. I know people love this, but it doesn't excite me at all. 2 stars as a couple of tracks were OK as background music.

I know this album quite well from my youth, and the main reason I never listen to this album is due to the immensely overplayed ànd overrated title track. I could never again go past the first track. Now I've listened to it again and with one exception, Life In The Fast Lane, this entire album to me tries to balance the line between emotion and kitsch. But too many times falls over to the latter (Pretty Maids All In A Row, Wasted Time, The Last Resort) that this is an unlistenable mess. It's just really not for me. Glad I did the re-listen though.
I hate the Eagles with an abiding passion. Their music was always banal and the worst part was that they were unavoidable - everywhere you went back in the day, there they were.
Hotel California is a perfect song, knocked it out of the park with that one. I did not really enjoy the rest of the album. The ballads were just excruciating. All the singing/playing/production is top notch, perfectly done, but at times it’s a little too easy-listening for me.
It tends to be floated around that Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan are better as songwriters than musicians, and their songs are notably better when performed by other artists. In my opinion, this can't be further from the truth. Meanwhile, the Eagles exemplify this concept to a T. As a band they are dull and boring with very little offered from their voices or musicianship. That being said, they are able to craft very nice melodies and decent lyrics which is highlighted in this album. Although, I guarantee I would be able to find better versions of each of these songs. Apparently, I may be in the minority with this opinion, but other than some solid early tracks, this album doesn't do too much with insightful subject matter or even good songs.

I tried my best to listen and like this but I couldn't. The Eagles were my Dad's favorite band, and if the sounds were all as good as Hotel California I would love it, but this album is way too cheesy for my taste.

Hotel California is a great tune, and Wasted Time has a pretty chord progression. Victim of Love not too bad. But as whole, it's just so fucking _naff_... Just like Queen, too often this album sounded like fodder for talent show contestants to cover, but in this case all sugary and faux-emotive. Horrid. Was a relief to get to the end. Bonus stars: Enjoyment: 0.5/2 for the tunes above Quality: 0.5/2, ditto 2*, which feels generous.

I hadn't listened to this in many years. I didn't remember that most of the sing-along favorites aren't in this album, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I my incorrect memory of it led me to expect.
Albums a classic in the zietgiest, not sure if it's a classic to me. Starts strong with hotel California which speaks for itself. Then I forgot how awesome life in the fast lane is, saved for later. Then we get out of the fast lane for much of the rest of the album. Slow ballads pretty much from here on out. They may be good or even great ballads but they are not my style. It's been a long night and I don't "fucking hate the eagles man", but I don't see myself coming back to this hotel anytime soon.

One of the stronger pillars of my parents’ marriage is their shared hatred for Hotel California to the point where I was not allowed to play it on Guitar Hero World Tour in their presence. I don’t share the same level of disdain, but there’s not much to like here either.
The famous songs are the good ones. Last song is truly awful. Polar opposite of Rumors - here the bad reputation is well-deserved

Another album that is impossible to separate from pre-existing impressions, prejudices etc. And I have just heard Hotel California too many times! Can I place myself in the position of someone hearing it for the first time? What would I think? Pretty solid but does not resonate for me. Coincidently - just watched the Big Lebowski - which would get a 4 or even a 5
This should just be a 45 with the title track on one side and "New Kid on Town" on the other. I'm hard pressed to think of another record that comes out swinging as hard as this one does and then disappoints further and further with each successive track, all the way to the last seconds of its merciful conclusion. How the same decade that gave us Taxi Driver also made this band a gargantuan success is something I'll never fully understand.
Hotel California is a bop, was interested to hear some of their other songs... I am no longer interested.

Listen, they clearly know their way around a song or two. But it is truly all so... perfunctory. Where's the passion lads? Where's the unusual turns? It's all very pleasant. Very competently crafted. Don't get me wrong, music needs its craftsmen - so actually maybe crafted is the wrong word - it's competently designed. Like an Ikea table. As an Ikea table will serve its purpose for people who understand a table is necessary and just want it to put their plates and vases on, so the Eagles serve a purpose as music for people who don't need their music to do anything more than be music.

Despite myself, I still have a soft spot for the title track. But after that, the album is just pop rock. Competent, sure, but overwrought, especially when the Eagles try to include strings or keys in the arrangement. Stick to something that has a little soul to it.

A late 70s classic, full of very carefully crafted harmonies, manicured drum sounds, and layered guitar sounds. But despite all the work on the sounds, they still left in the clunking lyric about wine being a spirit - it is a fermented beverage - and that was the first thing that leapt out to annoy me, swiftly followed by the overwhelming feeling of smugness across the record. This was not an enjoyable listen. Earnest, pompous, and full of self-importance.

Funny this should come on the heels of the Byrds. This is the follow-up, imitation, watered-down version of what they were doing. To huge commercial success, while the Byrds are still relatively unheralded.
I will never knowingly listen to this album again. One of the things I have learned from my 1001 journey so far is that I have a particularly strong reserve supply of dislike for music that takes itself too seriously. It might be a stretch, but I think it is perfectly plausible that a band or artist could make music with a similar aesthetic to Eagles that I could like, but this album gets it all wrong for me. Eagles and their supporters think this is music that matters when in reality it’s vacuous, vanilla, disposable pop. I am a fan of plenty of disposable pop, and I may give high scores to some that turn up on this list, but Hotel California is very boring and that is a crime against pop music.
The Eagles are just the worst. So talented, and still so awful. I'd rather listen to my cat meowing for food.

Knowing only Hotel California (the worst of the classic 70s epic rock songs), I went in thinking the Eagles were a naff 70s rock band. I stand corrected. They’re much worse than just being naff. How these people became one of the best selling bands of all time is beyond me.

Obviously technically proficient, but ultimately soulless, I really don't understand how the Eagles became so popular. There were plenty of more interesting acts making music in the 70s, that Hotel California of all records became this mammoth myabe just speaks to the taste of the average person more than I'd care to admit. Overrated shit
I forgot I listened to this album after my first listen. With the exception of the title track and (part of) the chorus of Life in the Fast Lane I had no memory of anything in the album. Guitar rifts, lyrics, production, nothing. I remembered thinking the songs were alright, nothing interesting but also nothing spectacular, and was shocked when the album finished because it went by surprisingly fast given the bloated length of much of the songs, and then... nothing. I forgot everything. During my second listening it felt like the first time I was listening to most of the songs. And even afterwards on that trip, I could barely remember anything from the album. I've never experienced that with... well anything before. I don't know of this is a good album. It's not horrible, I can't say that. It's standard, nothing special. It is what people think of when they think of 70's rock. Typical of it's genre and it's constraints and tendencies. But the fact I can't recall anything specific, besides the first song, should mark this as a bad album, right? It has to right? The album doesn't sound horrible, it's not in terrible taste. It just passes the time. It's 43 minutes of rock's elevator music. It will stop you from experiencing the upcoming and slow journey in pure emptiness. But hell you'll remember, or care, about what you just listened to. Highlights are Hotel California (though the cover by the Gypsy Kings is the best version of the song).

I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man.
By far less obnoxious or terrible than their debut, the Eagle's Hotel California has some decent melodies and a few ideas that almost work (omg, did I really write down these words?). I don't fully "love" a single track, but New Kid in Town has a mildly (and suspiciously) soothing effect on my psyche today (a grey, f*#king freezing cold day somewhere in Europe). For every New Kid in Town, however, there is a Life in the Fast Lane or Victim of Love, which trigger my fingers to hit the skip button immediately. I'm glad I finally sat through Hotel Californa, because now I can be reasonably certain I'll never have to do it again. I'm honestly surprised that this is considered such a gem, because for most of its runtime (which isn't even thaaaat long), it's actually… quite boring.

I got this album on the same day I really started listening to Rosalia's Lux, which resulted in me levitating outside of my body, ascending to a higher plane, and finding god through music. I did put Hotel California on for a few songs, but honestly the best part of getting this album today was reading all the 1 star reviews ripping it apart and then feeling appreciative of all the actually good music I get to listen to. Don't listen to these guys, blast Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti out the open windows at top volume and know that GOD IS REAL GOD IS ACTUALLY REAL I WOULDN'T JOKE ABOUT THIS as my boyfriend Cameron Winter says.

Life in the Fast Lane needs a good metal cover - that's probably the only redeeming thing on this album. Where's C.O.C when you need them? Motorhead would have been a good choice too.

I honestly did not expect to loathe listening to this! I expected kind of "easy listening" dad-rock, and the Eagles are very competent musicians. But... why did it make my soul retreat into my boots? I think how it felt like it had been written and produced in a board-room, sterile, free of any edge or adventure, an going through the motions. It reminded me of my reaction to Steely Dan, but I think this was more of a visceral reaction. Title track is catchy, nothing else merited a listen for me. Couldn't wait for it to end. I give a star as musicianship was great, bass stood out to me. :)
There is a little paragraph at the end of this album's entry in the copy I have of the book and it says: "Hotel California represents everything that punk came to destroy: glassily perfect production, harmonized guitar solos and "themes"." And I can't be happier that punk washed so much away, not because what it's doing is wrong but there is something to hearing a song like "Hotel California" with it's tale of the horrors of this lovely place that traps you forever with a song that is probably the most representative of that era of soft rock, and just feeling absolutely nothing. It works thematically, but I can't care about this tale when the music sounds so iron out smooth it loses any edge, even the hard rocking songs just do nothing. Just a nothing of an album

Back in the 70s my mom was living on a commune, and there was a band playing there late one night, she was tired and trying to sleep and she got up and went up to the lead singer of the band (it was the Glenn Frey) and asked him if he could turn it off. Feel the same way about this album.

Did not enjoy it :( It's like a weak 2 at most but the attempts at actually rocking out and the really soft MOR tracks on here were really not for me (Life in the Fast Lane, Wasted Time, Pretty Maids All in a Row are weak 1/5 for me) and so I have to go lower. New Kid in Town, Try to Love Again and The Last Resort are both highlights (close to or comfortably a 3/5) and I think they succeeded most when sticking to that kinda soft rock formula but most of these tracks just feel so disposable - even the main big title track (which isn't that overplayed for me and so can say with a clear head that I just didn't like it).

So much of American culture is this now - it infuriates me to learn that we checked in here all the way back in the 70s. I want us to leave! Having now actually listened to them sort of on purpose, I guess I also hate the fucking Eagles, man.

I figured I'd give this a shot when 1001Albums pitched this to me to see if I really did hate the Eagles or if it was just a meme opinion I absorbed through film and the internet. Turns out I am in fact not a fan of this kind of slow, soft, reggae-tinged, tropical, sap ballad type of pop rock. None of the songs are all that exciting to me, and I while I'm a sucker for classic rock stuff to a degree the title track always stuck out as lame to me. Midwestern boomers longing for the exoticism of the west coast / the tropics while zerking it with pina coladas and acoustic beach side love ballads just doesn't warrant the rock coat of paint. One of those bands where people think the writing is really deep and get a lot out of the songs, but I definitely don't. Songs like Life in the Fast Lane are just a waste of time for me, where's the intrigue? The writing is slightly more complex than the average pop song, but not by much. The rock songs with boring lyrics are blended in with boring ballads like Wasted Time which makes it that much harder to listen to. Plus you add in the plausibly problematic fact that these guys are consistently judging women "out in those bars" after a breakup. "I could be wrong, but I'm not, no I'm not" is also one of the most obnoxious things I've heard a boy band say after telling a woman how she feels. Even writing a song about environmentalism ain't gonna save this from a 1/5. I'll be curious to see what the rest of the group thinks, because I think the Eagles will be lost to time here in another decade.

This is the 54th album I’m rating. I’ve only heard Hotel California and I hated it so I have pretty low expectations. Adding to my Playlist - Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, and Try and Love Again. Not Adding to my Playlist - New Kid in Town, Wasted Time, Wasted Time (Reprise), Victim of Love, Pretty Maids All in a Row, and The Last Resort. Hotel California - I don’t what young me was thinking because this is great. All in all I liked 3/9 songs. I don’t really like the Eagles. How did this album sell so well?
I can't do it
Several years ago some friends and I went to a festival that happened to have The Eagles on the bill. We felt obligated to go see the legendary band simply because it would likely be the only opportunity we'd ever have to do so. They opened with Hotel California and we listened. Once the song finished we all looked at each other and, knowing the set had already peaked, we walked off to watch something interesting. That same feeling came flooding back whilst listening to this album. What a turgid pile of shit. I believe it was the great thinker of the end of the last century, Jeffery 'the dude' Lebowski who said it most eloquently: "I hate the fucking Eagles, man". Quite.

People in 1976 were irreversibly changed hearing this New Kid in Town- pretty comfortable and very self-pitying Life in the Fast Lane- xbox racing game tutorial music Wasted time- lol Wasted time (reprise) -LOL YOU THOUGHT Victim of Love- i forgot to write something Pretty Maids All in a Row- women break his heart frequently Try and Love Again- going back for more women Last Resort- It was a different time but man. My gf moving to Colorado is just like the Native Americans. I do like the little minor note he hits but this is not it. Kind of a strange note to end the album on It's dramatic and comes across full of itself, which in the first few songs I can enjoy but the rest of it doesn't do much for me. I can see the appeal, but can't help but find the lyrics a bit insufferable and the sound itself unimpressive Read on the wiki that apparently they had to stop recording this album because Black Sabbath was in the next room (also funny)

General impression: Everyone’s saying it: “I just fuckin’ hate the Eagles, man.” Detailed review: This gets one star and it’s entirely due to the riff on “Life in the Fast Lane.” That’s a good riff. Not good enough to elevate any of the rest of the material, though. And as much as I hate the Eagles in general, I hate “Hotel California” (the song) the most. Fuck that song. Fuck this album. I don't want to spend any time on this. Some of the guitar solos are memorable. Another reviewer here said that this is the type of thing that gave rise to punk rock and I couldn't agree more.

Fuck! Really? I just had an Eagles album 2 weeks ago and I haven't been fully cleansed of all the shit still stuck in my ears. I'm 127 days into this and I'm starting to believe that Robert Dimery just has shitty taste in music. This albums sucks. No redeeming qualities AT ALL.
