Good listen, the hits are hits and the rest is pretty solid.
what can you say it’s hotel fucking california
One big tune. Two if you scratch beneath the camera. Legends they aren't.
Of course, the title track is one for the ages, as overplayed as it is. It's just epic how the two guitars soloing at the end of this stellar song finally join for a common climax. But when it comes to the album itself, it's the very definition of a *flawed* concept album. A significant chunk of those tracks sound a little ridiculous today, and the obvious ambition of this thing doesn't mesh well with its clear failures in execution, both musically and lyrically. Yet oddly enough, this is also a concept album about *failure* itself (mostly the failure of the American Dream). And in that sense, the overall cheesiness does bring an extra layer that makes the album a very interesting one to listen to, at least on an "intellectual" level. Whether all of that was intended or not is another story, but maybe it doesn't matter so much. It's only a little disappointing that the music is almost never as dark and intense as in closer "The Last Resort". The concept behind this record justified going to darker territories. One can't help regretting this missed opportunity here. But maybe for once, the legendary opener and its negative counterpart at the very end are enough to justify including this album on a list of 1001 essential albums to listen to. What's in between might be cheesy, but it's part of the unapolegetically despondent equation that *Hotel California* really is. Anyway, it would be a shame dying without at least having given a fair try to the fucking Eagles, man. If only because it's the only way to then state how much you hate them, just like the Dude did. I hate to say this but it's giving me Jimmy Buffett vibes. New Kid in Town is cringe. I think this music is deeply not for me, but great for car commercials? Idk. Wasted time is ok. The reprise is better because there is no vocal. Victim of love also cringe. Weirdly kind of enjoyed Try to Love Again, sort of a sweet lyric and melody, but the bar is low. The Last Resort is reasonable. Lyrics decent. Would not listen to this again.
If every song was “Hotel California”: a 5. However, every song is not “Hotel California” and the band is just too sleepy and reserved for my liking.
I tried my best to listen and like this but I couldn't. The Eagles were my Dad's favorite band, and if the sounds were all as good as Hotel California I would love it, but this album is way too cheesy for my taste.
Reading up on this album made me realize that the best selling album of all time is a greatest hits, and yet, doesn’t even include the the single greatest hit of this band! This album, however, it’s just a little bit too sleepy after the title track and life in the fast lane. Although, the latter is almost better than Hotel California!
i have grown up hating the eagles and thought they were a no good bad band. however after listening to this album i am wondering if i have been BRAINWASHED by my father. i liked this album. significantly.
This will be impossible to grade fairly. I always thought as a kid: "who doesn't hate the Eagles??" meanwhile conveniently ignoring that 32 million people bought this album. Even 10-15 years ago I'd have panned this upon seeing it, but I seem to be more open-minded (and perhaps nostalgic about some) about music and sweeping aside the easy jokes and constant classic rock airplay... I'm ready to give this a new ear. First of all - and easiest to discuss: how can you deny the awesomeness of the title track? Can't be done - it's a great song; the haunting opening, the dramatic lyrical build throughout the song, and of course the fantastic double-guitar solo. Ah nearly everyone on earth knows this - nothing new here. The rest? I mean - I did truly dislike "New Kid In Town" but <ahem> mature ears and really listening to this song for the first time in probably uhh 35 years - wow that transition from verses to chorus is really gorgeous - great songwriting. Dammit I'm finding new things to appreciate in this. Maybe I didn't want to admit this to myself. "Life In The Fast Lane" - the 3rd big hit and another you hear all the time... again it's often hard to separate the cliche and the fact that if you're over 35? you've heard this song 3172 times, mostly unwillingly. It's fine-to-good. It's after that where it starts getting ... Eagle-ish? Syrupy ballads (with the exception of "Victim of Love" which is an average-at-best hard rock song that is completely unmemorable) that maybe don't entirely harken back to their country-rock roots but do a good job of ... boring me. Let's cut to it here: this album is built on the monstrous first 3 cuts, all of which were or/and still are big hits. The rest is kinda wasted time <rimshot> Even though I'll never voluntarily put this on I'll be generous and acknowledge the historic aspect of the album and the enduring quality of those first few songs. 6/10 3 stars

notes - concept album about fame, california, american culture - they decided to move away from their earlier country influences - hotel california, life in the fast lane both from this album - great vocal harmonies - the second half is definitely less enjoyable than the first - gets a bit cheesy in the last few songs - recorded the song victim of love live off the floor to show haters that they can do it fav - hotel california - great song, love the spooky undertones least fav - wasted time - melodramatic

I've already listened to this album many times. It's been with me my entire music listening life. My dad owned this album and when I was a teen I used to borrow it a lot. It has always been a to go-to classic, although not really among my favorite albums. Lately, I haven't given this album much attention. It's nice to be reunited. Favorite songs: Pretty Maids All In A Row, New Kid In Town... Actually they're all great songs. Just a little tired of Hotel California and the Wasted Time reprise is too soon (maybe should have been before or after The Last Resort).
It's strange how a band can rip so hard at times and then be completely blah at others. Still, probably more highs than lows.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a fan of The Big Lebowski AND I like the Eagles. For me, this album is all about nostalgia, it got played a lot when I was a kid. The production, musicianship and guitar work are top notch. The opening of Hotel California gets me every time! The second half (in terms of side B on the LP), starts to feel a bit dreary. I like the anecdote about "The Last Resort" taking days to record, because they kept messing up because Black Sabbath were making too much noise in the studio next door!

The pinnacle of 70s pop rock following the success of their compilation the previous year. It's characterized by a rampant arena sound that would inspire glam metal just a few years later, except here taking a more accessible approach through country rock rather than heavy metal as other bands were currently doing. Each song sounds very different from each other, and you can tell they're trying to expand their audience. I think this is probably their most refined effort, but most of the songs are still pretty lame, but at least it's inoffensive and listenable. Album started off strong with the three power singles and got a little too tame thereafter. Nevertheless, the only truly awful song was "Pretty Maids."
I expected to hate this, given that I hate “Hotel California.” I didn’t hate it but I never want to listen to it again.
The songs I didn't already know are quite forgettable. Wondering how this generic of a band could become so famous? Just gives me slimy dad vibes. No, thanks.

Marginally more engaging than the last Eagles album, but nah. After committing to listening to 2 Eagles albums, I still only vaguely like 2 Eagles songs, and they both kick off their respective albums. Plus I prefer the Gipsy Kings version of one. Pass.

This album is FINE!! You all scoff at The Eagles but this is quintessential dad rock, and I love it! Favorite tracks are New Kid In Town, Victim of Love, Try and Love Again and obviously, the title track. And although many of these songs I've only heard for the first time today, it still evoked memories of sitting in the back of a car at 6 years old while my parents drove us to a long weekend roadtrip out of town. Fast forward two decades later, I am now a girl in my late-20s but I still strongly believe in the power of dad rock!! 🤘

Un exemple d'hotellerie rock offert ici par nos compères des Eagles. Les serviettes sont parfaitement pliées dans la chambre, et le code wifi a bien été communiqué dès l'arrivée dans l'établissement. Petit bémol: un seul échantillon de shampoing a été fourni, alors que la reservation précisait bien que deux personnes séjourneraient au sein de l'hôtel. On ne leur en tient pas rigueur et leur accorde la note de 4 étoiles sur 5.

Hotel California is one of those songs like Wonderwall, in that if you told me you’d never heard it before I would call you a liar and punch you clean in the chin. I do very much like the songs I already know if this album, so let’s listen to the rest! Songs I already knew: Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane Favourites after listening: Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane, The Last Resort Many times during this album I found myself covered in goosebumps. The solo of Hotel California even gave be goosebumps on my scalp, so I was likely looking somewhat similar to Doc Brown for a little while. I loved this album from front to back - the singing is buttery smooth, the guitars and drums are beautifully played, but the highlights for me were the piano and strings dotted around throughout. I think the Eagles seem to be seen as a bit of a cringey band these days (like the boomer version of Nickelback) but I can earnestly say that I enjoyed this very much, and will definitely be listening again.

Its a good listen. Some classic bangers included. It falls short of being a perfect classic album though as a whole.

Amazing Album. Hotel California is such a well crafted song, everyone knows. I can't remember which album my dad had when I was growing up, but it contained an acoustic version of Hotel California which is always the "real" version to me. Lots of good songs elsewhere on the album too! Definitely ought to listen again.
Fantastic, iconic album without any bad songs, and no two songs are the same. The obivious, most-well known, monster-hit song is Hotel California, but the likes of Wasted Time and The Last Resort are nearly equally as good. West Coast country rock has never sounded better. 5/5

good shit I think the title track surpasses the rest of the album in quality (unlike say, Elephant by The White Stripes where there are plenty of songs I found to be just as good as Seven Nation Army) but still, extremely enjoyable album 10/10

Here’s another iconic album that’s kind of hard to judge on it’s own merits because of the massive legacy that surrounds it. The first side can almost live up to the hype, in my opinion. A really strong start but it does lose momentum on the flip side. I like the anti-corporate American vibes of the closing track but the rest had little impact on me. Haters gunna hate and I think hating Eagles is what the cool kids are about, but screw them, I’m going to dig through my top draw for my capo and lock in on to 7th fret like I don’t give a fuck.

Meh. Seems just a step above the musicality of country music, with their hits (mostly Henley helmed) standing apart a bit. Even the hits are worn out, mostly, a with little staying power, at least to my ears. Musically, the singles do have a little bit more going for them, while the other tracks sound and feel like what they are - fillers. Bland.
This is the first album I've recieved that I have listened to many times before. That didn't stop me from listening to it again! I love The Eagles, and this album is a gem! Glenn Frey & Don Henley's vocals are amazing, and the harmonies reached by the band are wonderful! The addition of Joe Walsh on guitar was awesome, and his solos throughout this album are terrific! The addition of strings in Wasted Time brings that slow ballad to a whole new level! Favourite songs : Life in the Fast Lane (awesome, rocking song), Hotel California, Victim of Love, Try and Love Again Least favourite song: if forced to choose, Wasted Time 5/5
Haven't heard this whole album start to finish in like, 10 years. Definitely a great collection of tunes.

Very of its time - but don't think it's aged particularly well for a modern listener. What was already 'dad rock' 25 years ago, is now becoming 'grandad rock', and not in a particularly good way.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Hotel California (obvs) and Wasted Time were my stand outs. But too many other bands do this genre better to give this any more than 3.

Hotel California is a great tune, and Wasted Time has a pretty chord progression. Victim of Love not too bad. But as whole, it's just so fucking _naff_... Just like Queen, too often this album sounded like fodder for talent show contestants to cover, but in this case all sugary and faux-emotive. Horrid. Was a relief to get to the end. Bonus stars: Enjoyment: 0.5/2 for the tunes above Quality: 0.5/2, ditto 2*, which feels generous.
I really liked rock songs on it but not a fan of their ballads. But I was surprised, since I don't like hotel California (the song) I wasn't expecting to actually like the album. I will listen to it again.

Despite overplay, the title track is obviously great. 'Life In The Fast Lane' is also stand out, but the rest of the album pretty much limps along. I was expecting there to be a bit more depth, but no, not a standout album.

I hadn't listened to this in many years. I didn't remember that most of the sing-along favorites aren't in this album, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I my incorrect memory of it led me to expect.

You know what you're getting here.
The title track is timeless, no question. Thing is, not another song on this album would have carried it the way it did so in a way it could be justified having this album on 1001 as it had probably the most effective runaway hit on any album at any time. In summation, the album is nothing spectacular.
If I never hear the song Hotel California ever again in my life I would be totally happy with it. The song Try and Love Again was decent. Probably because I haven’t heard it 10,000 times before.

Classic solid album, you can't beat the Eagles
Albums a classic in the zietgiest, not sure if it's a classic to me. Starts strong with hotel California which speaks for itself. Then I forgot how awesome life in the fast lane is, saved for later. Then we get out of the fast lane for much of the rest of the album. Slow ballads pretty much from here on out. They may be good or even great ballads but they are not my style. It's been a long night and I don't "fucking hate the eagles man", but I don't see myself coming back to this hotel anytime soon.

3.5 - Besides its internationally ubiquitous title track and classic rock mainstay "Life in the Fast Lane", this record is a collection of 1970s easy-listening rock. Well written and composed tracks full of heartfelt sap. They even offer a sweeping survey of American colonialism/expansion with "The Last Resort" (truly strange). I probably won't voluntarily revisit this record though it's solid for what it is.

Coincidentally I had already listened to this for the first time a while ago. I thought it was some solid songs and the single is amazing, though it seems like there's not much else to them other than the compilations that are so highly praised. This one has a great flow track to track at least, it was a pleasant listen.
Great Album
The Eagles are a case of talented musicians who have little appeal for me. Individually, I rated nearly every track with 3 stars, which is equivalent to "I don't hate it. I guess it's okay, but I won't ask to hear the track again." There is one contrast to the solid 3 stars. My first time hearing "Hotel California" was an experience, and I listened to that track many times over the years. I'm not quite sure where that track lands with me today, but the mysterious story and mix of guitar and percussion still leave something to ponder. But the desire to sink into the music is much less than it use to be. The more I have heard from the Eagles, the less I need to hear from the Eagles. Don Henley's solo work furthered that sentiment as well. Hotel California is okay, but I wouldn't tell anyone to listen to it.
Off to a great start with the classic Hotel California. You can never go wrong with this song! I put the album on while working and loved it. I feel you could put this album on at almost any time and could appreciate it. Wasted Time is so soothing, it's otherworldly. It sounds like it was made for a movie like the Never Ending Story. Good album, not too long.

Enjoyable ride but somewhat overrated. Hotel California has always been a bit too cloying to be a "classic" for me. I think the last track is the best, actually!
Hard to really know what to give this album. A really well produced album with some great tracks, but the remaining tracks are a snooze fest of middle of the road soft rock. 3.5 out of 5 for me, but will bump to 4 cause of Hotel California

Nothing beats the iconic HC but there are still several solid tracks on the album . A little fluff and too much synth here and there, but vocally the songs are very well done. Great harmonies and back in ng throughout. I wish they would have let the instrumentation rip a little more as they do in HC. Fave tracks: HC and New Kid in Town
Studs: Hotel California is legendary. Harmonies on New Kid in Town are outstanding and give me chills. Life in the fast lane is just great too, of course, just love the bass line, plus it features like 4 different iconic guitar riffs. Victim of Love is again a total classic. Duds: At first I felt that Wasted Time brought the record to a screeching halt, but by the end I was completely on board, and the symphony on the next track was beautiful. I felt the same way again when Pretty Maids All in a Row came on. I stand by that one. boooooring lolz. Vibe: I was obsessed with the Hell Freezes Over CD for a period during my youth. That's where I learned all the eagles songs I love. Never heard a single one of their full albums though. Glad I remedied that. This fucking rocked. This album is STACKED.

A couple of famous tunes but its all a bit dated now
This album is perfection. Everything amazing that evolved in music in the 60s and 70s from lyrics, production and composition, is in this album.
The A Side with its 4 powerhouse songs is among the best that's out there. The B side falls off,because while the songs are pretty much the same concept, they do not work as good as the previous ones and are way too long. Nonetheless a great album, however falls short of a masterpiece

Title track solo is legendary, gotta learn that so I can steal some licks from it. Life in the fast lane is great and victim of love is pretty good but the whole rest of the album kinda failed to strike a chord with me. Not saying it's bad but it's just not my speed. Drumming gets stale when you listen to the whole album all the way through but I get why. Would be 3 stars but that solo kicks it up to 4 all by itself imo.

Yeah this was quite good.
I've seen the Eagles live, and they weren't very good. Played their guitars and sang beautifully, but there wasn't any stage presence or much in the way of energy. I went into this with quite low expectations, but it was a lot better than I expected. Hotel California is at that stage where it's a great song that I've heard so many times it takes the edge off, but there are plenty of other good songs on this album too. Lots more edge in the lyrics than I expected, I came into this thinking it would all be kinda kitschy country-ish (and New Kid in Town doesn't do much to disabuse that), but there's plenty of variety and a decent bit of wit too. 3/5, top end and not far off of a 4.

Well, that's a 5 no doubt People say that Hotel California is the devils song. Quite right, just as I listened to it today I saw a weak moth crawling on the floor. I took it in my hand because I thought that moths were pretty harmless and brought it outside, it stayed there for a little while. What I didn't realize was that this was a vampire-moth. So it jabbed it's strawlike mouth right into the palm of my hand and began sucking my blood. This was a strange coincidence. 5/7 Perfect Score, would get sucked again.

Eagles, at their edgiest, are just barely sharp enough to be interesting. When they soften that edge even slightly, the songs quickly become mind-numbingly boring. It's boomer soft-rock and I'm not interested in anything but the two hits ("Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane"). The rest of the album is utterly forgettable. In the words of my 9-year-old daughter, "I didn't really like that. It's kind of boring. Like, The Beatles have slow songs but they're interesting. These slow songs weren't interesting. I'm glad it's over, dad."

Ah, my second Eagles' album and this must also be my California week with 3 out the five artists from LA. This is the Eagles' fifth album with Joe Walsh replacing founding member Bernie Leadon on guitar. It found them moving away from country rock into more rock. Although, there still are some slower-paced songs. In fact, each side closer, "Wasted Time" and "The Last Resort " has a pretty lush string arrangement. According to Don Henley, the album is about the loss of innocence, perils of fame, illusions vs. reality. I agree with that especially the title song. However, there are a number of songs about relationships too. Henley also said this was the peak of the band and they starting growing apart after this. I guess hard to top one of the best selling albums of all time. Besides the title track, other standouts include: "New Kid in Town" - just a nice sounding song, more in that country rock genre to me, "Life in the Fast Lane" - OK, this is more rock, written by Glenn Frey after a discussion with his drug dealer, I can't help thinking about that band covering this song in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Victum of Love" - always liked the guitar. This album was easy to listen to with its iconic songs. Honestly, I'd give the slight edge, for me, to their first album which I just had last week.
More Dad music.
You can still smell the Brut on every track. Even though some of the components should click with this Steely Dan head, it's still not happening for me except with the title track. The smug macho stuff devoid of irony is a tougher sell now. And the outro of The Last Resort is interminable still.
The titel song obviously a classic, and several other of the Eagles top songs are included here. However also a few fillers, that do not stand the test of time. So therefore not a 5 star album in my World, but close

My dads favourite band so Heard the songs to death on the first half of this album. Not as familiar with the second half so enjoyed that a little more.

This album and band gets a lot of flack because of a meme, but this album is, objectively, a really good pop/yacht-rock album. Some all-time classics of classic rock radio here and very well produced. It's not as bad as people claim it is because of The Dude doesn't like them. It's....fine. 3.5/5.
Ah, to be but a traveler, seeking shelter for the night, wellcomed by a pretty face into Hotel California. The songs are more contemplative but engaging, the vocals clear, distinct and carrying powerfull emotions, the stories they tell evocative. I must say I enjoyed this album a great deal. A pleasant journey. I would say it's a perfect road trip album. I was exposed to it many times before - when I was a kid my parents used to play it from a MC while driving. Hotel California brings the good vibes. It's a bit melancholic, laid-back and 70s. However, I don't find it particularly ear-wormy apart from the title song. Highlight: Victim of Love

Well, this won't be a one star album as 'The Eagles' was, as it contains at least one stone cold classic. The title track is great obviously, but also, Life in the Fast Lane is a fun stomper, and The Last Resort is very good too. Clearly evolved past the horror of their debut (though not entirely - Victim of Love is an overlong, self indulgent pile of crap) to make an album that is great when it's great, and inoffensive when it isn't 👏👏👏

Best guitar solo ever?
It is hard to review this one as objective. This was released soon after I turned 16 and it was omnipresent during the last few years of high school. The inevitable backlash occurred (not just to the album, but Eagles in general). Nonetheless, I was and still am a huge fan. The album is strong from start to finish and has four distinct vices and songwriters. A classic and masterpiece of the genre.
A near-perfect (if not outright perfect) album from start to finish. Just one great song after another. Sonically outstanding. It's Henley/Frye's masterpiece that sounds as great today as it did when I first heard it! Truly one of my top albums of all time.

A great album but honestly, I've heard the songs so many times over the decades - especially in high school - that I wouldn't have sought the music out if not for this website. Still, it's well worth the listen and well worth adding to your collection.

You know it's a hugely popular album when you're intimately familiar with 6 of the 9 songs, even though you've never actually listened to the album. I've never been a huge fan, but I have to give them credit for what I'm sure everyone would consider their pinnacle. I think Joe Walsh was good for the band. Without him I suspect they would have been firmly in the soft rock/easy listening category, but he gave them a bit more of an edge. Enough at least that I enjoy listening. 4 stars.

Hotel California is the one really good song on this album. I'm sure if I paid more attention to the lyrics I'd enjoy the album more but most of the songs just don't have much energy and feel rather bland. Listening to "Already Gone" from a previous album and thinking, why doesn't Hotel CA have more upbeat, country rock songs like this? Why is this one of the biggest selling albums of all time?

Awesome sound. I loved this album
I'm not the biggest Eagles fan in the world, but this was pretty good, and I'm glad I checked it out. I think the title track was a strange choice as an opener. Anyway, the band's chiller vibe is kind of hit or miss for me, but the album was still a good listen, even if I don't expect to return to its deep cuts anytime soon.

The Eagles made some classic songs and they will always hold a place in my nostalgia folder but they never took any chances. All their songs are just "safe" so they safely appeal to everyone but there is nothing cutting edge about them or awesome. They are just chill and mellow.
A great classic album. The A-side is a collection of great songs, but it honestly drags a little bit on the B-side. I expected to have more to say about such a classic album but I don't. But it is still a great album.

One of the stronger pillars of my parents’ marriage is their shared hatred for Hotel California to the point where I was not allowed to play it on Guitar Hero World Tour in their presence. I don’t share the same level of disdain, but there’s not much to like here either.
I have a playlist of my favorite songs of all time. Only one song allowed per band. Hotel California is the first song I put on that list, and I think it still belongs on there. The rest of the album is in the 3-4 range for me. Maybe a few too many ballads, I like them but as a spice rather than the full meal.
The famous songs are the good ones. Last song is truly awful. Polar opposite of Rumors - here the bad reputation is well-deserved

A masterpiece
The high school football coach pulled his middle linebacker out of the game, grabbed him by the facemask and growled, ‘You need to git your head into the game, son, and now. What is it with you tonight anyway? Are you ignorant or just apathetic?’ To which the kid replied, ‘I don’t know, coach, and I don’t care.’ What is it with lyricists Don Henley and Glen Frey, do they not know or just don’t care? 'Hotel California' was IT, in 1976, my senior year of high school. With the possible exception of 'Frampton Comes Alive,' 'Boston,' and both 'Fleetwood Mac' and 'Rumours' (essentially, the same fantastic LPs), there was nothing bigger than Eagles, and this particular album. Musically, the interplay between guitarists Don Felder and Joe Walsh throughout shine like the southern California sun. Everyone else is great, too: Henley, Frey, Meisner, and even Walsh’s vocals are simply sublime. You might not be the biggest fan of their country rock genre (this album purposefully leaning more towards the rock), but you can’t deny how stunning these harmonies are arranged and performed. Speaking of arrangements, Jim Ed Norman’s score and conducting of the ‘Wasted Time’ reprise is practically worth the cost of the entire LP, a bargain $6 in the mid-70s as I recall. Yes, I’ve got no beef with the music, although its not really my bag much these days. But I played the shit out of it in 1976, on my mighty AMC Gremlin 8 track player (google it, kids), with a matchbook cover jammed in the bottom to insure a tight fit to prevent another song from faintly bleeding on to the one actually playing (again, google it.) It’s the lyrics that concern me; or, more accurately, the lyricists’ intentions. Despite the artful writing, the major problem I have with 'Hotel California' is it’s core ideology. No, that’s not it exactly. It’s Henley and Frey’s (and not Walsh’s; not enough intel on Meisner to make a call) ignorance and/or apathy about their own selves as participants in the very things they are criticizing. Virtually every song beginning with ‘Life in the Fast Line,’ the tale of a couple 'rushin' down the freeway, messed around and got lost, THEY didn't care, they were just dyin' to get off,‘ to the end, ‘The Last Resort,’ ‘THEY call it paradise, I don’t know why. Somebody laid the mountains low, while the town got high,’ are attitudes and behaviors the lyricists themselves are equally guilty of. If this whole concept were a subtle commentary on their own transgressions, then I would call it an outstanding work of art. But given their subsequent interviews, most especially Henley’s continued arrogant insistence that there’s no good music being made anymore, I can’t find any clues on Hotel California that indicate he and his bandmate are turning the mirror on themselves as well as the rest of us materialistic, mass consuming, environmental ravaging, racist, genocidal, drug abusing Americans. Hypocrites! Don Felder, chime in here anytime you want. And then, of course, the famous opening and title track, with its claim on the one hand that ‘We are all just prisoners here of our own device.’ Ok, I’m hip to that. But then to turn around and make another claim that the hotel management is ‘programed to receive. (And) You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave’? Those two takes on hell (or the American culture of the 1970s, or rock star fame and fortune, or whatever else the Hotel California symbolizes) seem very different to me, the latter option being the worse, not to mention just bad theology. Methinks the lyricists are spiritually confused. Too much cocaine will do that to you. And too much adoration without the necessary restraint of the ego. And too much money, or at least the love of it. Thank God for sweet, good-hearted Joe Walsh. Sure, he could drink and snort more substances in his day than the rest of the band combined. But he also had more humility, and self-awareness that eventually got him straightened out and flying right. His song, ‘Pretty Maids All in a Row,’ contains these lyrics: ‘Seems like we’ve come a long way. My, but we learn so slow,’ and ‘all you wishing well fools with your fortunes, someone should send you a rose.’ Contrast that with Henley’s statement on the song immediately before, ‘Victim of Love’: ‘I could be wrong, but I’m not.’ This is one of the best albums that I wouldn’t regret never listening to again. And that’s a real shame, because I love to sing, and I love to harmonize, and 'Hotel California' offers that gift in spades. It deserves 5 stars, so I’m going to honor that. But I’m also considering American writer of Christian literature, Warren W. Wiersbe’s advice that ‘What I am is God’s gift to me. What I do with it is my gift to God.’
I call this album a masterpiece. This was my first time listening to this album from start to end and i'm really impressed with the high quality. My top 5 songs: Hotel California, New Kid in Town, Victim of Love, Try and Love Again and The Last Resort.

I like Hotel California--both the title track and the album. People criticize the Eagles for being basic or "dad music" but this album deserves its hype. That said, I don't love every track and though I'd re-listen to two or three tracks, can't say I'd revisit the album in its entirety. Fave track: Hotel California. It's the most famous track for a reason.

Drôle d'album. Hotel California, je ne suis plus capable de l'entendre. J'ai probablement déjà aimé New Kid In Town étant jeune, vraiment jeune. Aujourd'hui je déteste cette chanson. Je ne comprends pas ce que Life in the Fast Lane fait sur cet album. Elle ne cadre tellement pas avec le reste. C'est la chanson que je préfère. Pas sûr de comprendre pourquoi tout d'un coup, il y a un orchestre pour Wasted Time (Reprise).

You know that feeling you get when your mother has stuffed cake after cake down your fat gob and although you love the taste of the chocolate frosting and the sponge and the jam and the cream, you've just over indulged so much that you're violently sick all over your grandmother and her new pristine white air max trainers? Well, this album perfectly encapsulates everything about that feeling. Except the cake tastes like rotting fish guts.
Ergh. I don't know. Shit. Hotel California is massive I guess. Got bored instantly. If it was a footballer it would be Romelu Lukaku trying to escape Chelsea, but way less interesting.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA is packed with incredible songs. The title track is one of the most incredible rock songs ever written. After that it’s packed with hits like “New Kid In Town,” “Life In The Fast Lane,” “Victim Of Love,” “Try And Love Again.” The quality of the remaining songs are every bit as compelling despite the tendency to overlook them. My favorite is one of those other songs. Over the years "Last Resort" has continued to expose new facets and has become my anthem of loss as I have come to perceive the world as a much more harsh and less magical place. Humanity is failing to stop - or even alone acknowledge - the wheels of our own destruction. Listening to it at the closing of HOTEL CALIFORNIA is a powerful statement. HOTEL CALIFORNIA is an incredible work whose indictment of American exceptionalism grows more urgent with each year that passes.

Another album that is impossible to separate from pre-existing impressions, prejudices etc. And I have just heard Hotel California too many times! Can I place myself in the position of someone hearing it for the first time? What would I think? Pretty solid but does not resonate for me. Coincidently - just watched the Big Lebowski - which would get a 4 or even a 5

I liked this more than I thought I would but it's not the kind of thing I can see myself putting on often... ... although if I ever do get a nice little home to call my own, with a little area I can sit and watch the rain bucket down and batter the windows, I could see this spinning on vinyl as I had a cup of tea and settled into my favourite comfy chair.
Dad Rock at its finest
It's so bland compared to their contemporaries and inspirations: none of the politics of CCR, none of the of the romantic complications of Fleetwood Mac, none of the creativity of Steely Dan- just rock ballad after rock ballad
The title track is one of my favorites, and frequently wins radio station polls. The rockers are always fun, and make this one of my top picks. The Eagles reliably deliver the full, polished sound of a real rock band, even in the songs where they're whining instead of rocking. I appreciated the slow songs more this time, since I listened more consciously than I usually do. All in all, I greatly enjoyed the album. I was a little exasperated by Don Henley's perpetually bleeding heart, but that might just be a lack of patience with his slow ones. I loved every song on the Boys of Summer alblum, and I don't have as much trouble with Rufus Wainwright's bleeding heart.

Title track is awesome, of course. Anyone who disagrees has just been overexposed to it. The rest of the album is nice, their harmonies are very good. It's pleasant easy-going rock, which is nice at times but isn't exactly my style.
The first side of this record and Victim of Love are all pretty good. The Last Resort is a little embarrassing, maybe more so now than it was then. But I LOVE the story that The Eagles had to stop recording this sometimes because Black Sabbath was being too loud in an adjacent studio. Anyway, I don't hate the Eagles and the songs are pretty catchy. I like the song Hotel California mostly for the eerie weirdness of the story. It's close enough to a horror movie to enjoy. And I like Life in the Fast Lane because I dig a good Hollywood live-fast-die-young story. I also like the production stories on this one. Is the music worth 4 stars? I don't know. But the whole package of this one gets it there, I think.
It's long been fashionable to dump on the Eagles. Charges include their insipid songwriting, privilege of facility over feeling and just downright dullness. I think those are fair critiques, to an extent. Side two of 'Hotel California' ticks those boxes; 'Last Resort' being the prime culprit. But side one - it's pretty good, no? The title track is overplayed but, when rationed out, still has a kick to it. 'Life in the Fast Lane' is a genuinely good cautionary tale of excess. The Eagles are a strange duck, as they can be great or terrible, sometimes in the span of the same song. At least this platter didn't contain 'James Dean', in my top five hated rock songs of all time.
This should just be a 45 with the title track on one side and "New Kid on Town" on the other. I'm hard pressed to think of another record that comes out swinging as hard as this one does and then disappoints further and further with each successive track, all the way to the last seconds of its merciful conclusion. How the same decade that gave us Taxi Driver also made this band a gargantuan success is something I'll never fully understand.

Absolutely, positively perfect in every way.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this album and although I have heard of the Eagles, I haven't really listened to much and thought they were just American Country. Hotel California is a great concept album by their own admission. It embodies all of the themes and connotations of what California encompasses, the allure of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood but it also speaks to the illusion of it all. The Eagles are a band that while they don't appeal to my personal preference for music I like to come back to over and over, I can acknowledge and appreciate their talent in their songs. This was a pretty solid album, until the last song. I'm all for a protest song but found The Last Resort so bland and blatant that i feel it drags down the rest of the album.
This album just starts out with greatness. Hotel California, New Kid in Town, and Life in the Fast Lane are some of my favorite Eagles songs. After that, you get a nice mix of classic Eagles sounds. Great album.
There is not one bad song on this album for me. There’s some better than others but what the Eagles do musically with their harmonies and simple instrumentation will always impress me.
I love Henley's voice and the lead guitar backing on almost every song. Hotel and Fast Lane are GD masterpieces, but a couple tracks come in on the boring side as well.

De un disco que abre con una de las canciones más emblemáticas, no solo de su época, sino de el Rock en general, la neta esperaba muchísimo más. Hotel Claifornia, como canción, tiene muchísimo que ofrecer (incluso pese a lo choteada): Solos de guitarra memorables, largos y muy entretenidos; buenas voces; letra críptica pero de todos modos muy buena; y en general una estructura larga y de muchas partes que la mantienen entretenida. Luego viene el otro sencillo, New Kid In Town… Nada mala, un poco muy soft, pero el toque country es agradable. Pero de ahí, se me cae el disco. No vuelve a tomar nada de lo interesante que ofrece Hotel California y abusa de partes exageradas y la voz, que en la primera es interesante, se vuelve tediosa. Lástima; teóricamente es uno de los grandes discos de la década y a mí me quedó debiendo.

Genre: Pop Rock 3/5 Buoyed by one of the most massive singles in rock history, the album Hotel California is one of the best-selling records of all time. Along with their Greatest Hits album that had been released the previous year, another album that’s still one of the highest-selling records ever, The Eagles were flying high, and writing some of the most memorable music of the 70s. However, after the initial headrush of the opening title track, the album leaves much to be desired. Life in the Fast Lane is another good single. The production on this is nice and expensive, as lush strings fill the empty spaces left by the sparse arrangements Helder and Walsh provide throughout the later half of this album. Wasted Times is just that, and the last half of the album wasn’t good until the last few minutes of The Last Resort. As scathing as I sound, this album ain’t half bad, but it’s certainly no crown jewel.
I expected to like this one a lot more than I did. The songs weren't really memorable and some of them didn't really seem to fit the vibe. I thought one of them could've been a Kiss song. Only reason I'm giving it a 3 instead of a 2 is because my Mom loves the eagles so I feel like I owe it to her.

This is an excellent if not epic album. 43 minutes of very emotive and powerful instrumentals and lyrics. I believe this to be the epitome of the eagles. Each song has a specific message that it conveys perfectly. I especially enjoy ‘life in the fast lane’ as it perfectly encapsulates the album's message of a rockstars life in the 70's. Every lyric of every song seems to have more than one face-value meaning. It is a masterpiece with excellent guitar, drums, vocals and piano. I also really like the album cover with its contrast between light and dark.
Hotel California is a bop, was interested to hear some of their other songs... I am no longer interested.
this sounds like what a white 40-60 year old man who regular abuses people (particularly women) listens to while driving on a sunny day to escape his own problems. hotel california is okay though.

This is a prime example of a top heavy album. The opening track is incredible, and New Kid in Town is great too, but things just slowly decline from there and the entire B side is just forgettable dad rock

I am a casual fan of EAGLES having most of their music due to liking most of their hits. I have HOTEL CALIFORNIA and I like the album well enough. After re-listening to HOTEL CALIFORNIA, I enjoy the album especially the hits: "Hotel California", "Life in the Fast Lane" and "New Kid in Town", however, since I am an album oriented person, the remaining 2/3 (6 songs) are decent, but are not consistent enough to hold up the three major hits. The six non-hits seem almost like filler, but actually a little better than that. I think that is true for all or most of their albums and that the reason why I am only a casual fan and not a die-hard one. Saw the Eagles on tour at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands NJ summer of 1980. My first stadium concert. Sold out. The opening acts were Little River Band and Heart. Hotel California had been released more than 3 years before and The Long Run was out in 1979, yet this was still a Hotel California tour. I remember the cover art on the stage background and the roar of the crowd when Joe Walsh started playing those famous opening notes. Crazy to thing they had already released a greatest hits album before HC was released. Yet when Walsh joined the band it took them to a new plateau without losing their roots, unlike some groups that shifted so much with a new member (ex. the Doobies). This album offers so much beyond the title track—Life in the Fast Lane’s driving beat, the emotion of Wasted Time, New Kid in Town, Victim of Love. Just an amazing album from an amazing band.
The majority of this album is on their greatest hits, Volume 2. I remember when I was in high school listening to Greatest Hits Volume 1 & 2 over and over again. I grew out of the Eagles. Part of it is that the only song the play on the radio is "Hotel California," which grew tedious. And then they were having a farewell tour, but then changed their minds. They could have gone out in a big finale, but decided "nah, let's not do that." That bugs me still. The few songs not on their greatest hits are also good, although I do not like how "Pretty Maids All In A Row" fades out. It's like Walsh couldn't figure out how to end the song. And Joe Walsh was the secret weapon for that band in this album, man. He was just... awesome. I don't think I would revisit the album, but it was nice to come back to once again.
I had a rough night and I hate the Eagles man. I can't hear an Eagles tune anymore without thinking of the Big Lebowski. I admit the genius of the title track but I also admit I'm so sick of it. Still, 30+ million people who bought this album can't be wrong, right? Kudos for the different stylings from song to song - e.g., Hotel California (complex, operatic), New Kid in Town (Country & Mexican), Life in the Fast Lane (LA Rock - with a Joe Walsh twist?), Wasted Time (minimal, piano-driven plus an instrumental reprise), Victim of Love (more rock, but more chords and less plucking), The Last Resort (sweeping, piano-driven). Also, the lyrics are really smart, full of analogy and innuendo - it makes it fun trying to figure out the meaning (or double meaning). I thought I was tired of the album after the first few tracks but Wasted Time and Victim of Love reminded me how good these guys are at both soft and hard rock. The latter in particular made me re-appreciate all the guitar and bass work on this album. And though there's a lot of good Hendley lead singing, Try and Love Again reminded me there's also good lead singing from Meisner (and Frey...Walsh kinda sucked on Pretty Maids All in a Row). The Last Resort is probably equal to Desperado in terms of my favorite Eagles track ever (the lyrical commentary, the beautiful arrangements). Yeah, 30+ million people ain't wrong.
I feel like I should give this a 5 - after all, it's a classic and includes worthy hits such as Hotel California (love the guitar solos at the end) and Life in the Fast Lane. But there's just something about the album that I find underwhelming. Maybe it's a little too perfect, a little too polished. It just doesn't make me say "I want to listen to this again." I even listened to it multiple times to see if I was missing something, but no. So, I'm giving it a 4. Great songs, including some stone cold classics (I also like Victim of Love), but it's just missing that je ne sais quoi.

I don't hate the Eagles like The Dude does, but some of their songs beat me down; Hotel California is chief among them, with Life in the Fast Lane close behind. The fact that both are on this album makes it a slog, but it was better than I wanted to admit. Still not something I would ever put on voluntarily. Best track: The Last Resort

I've listened to too much Eagles growing up on the radio to really enjoy them anymore, but gave this a spin anyway. I can't say that these aren't good songs, but Don Henley's voice is a little too syrupy for my taste and the music is too sweet and smooth to be interesting to listed to. I know. I should like the Eagles. I just don't

A very pleasant listen. I obviously knew the hits but also liked things like the little orchestral interlude. Not a band I've ever has much inclination to delve further into, but this is nice.

Listened Before? Y My first entry for an album I've listened to all the way through in the past! Pros: Hey, it's the Eagles! It's the Eagles best known album, and it's a widely acclaimed masterpiece! Also, Hotel California, and The Last Resort are a couple of my favorite songs of all time. Amazing album. Stellar songwriting. Stellar instrumentation. Cons: The only con I have for this album (and actually the band as a whole), is that in MY opinion, Don Henley has such an amazing voice that nobody else should sing. Ever. I don't understand the rotating singers thing and it actually annoys me a lot. Added to Library - Y Songs Added to Playlist - Hotel California, The Last Resort
