Reviews (page 13 of 14)

I like prog-adjacent jazzy dad rock, but i also hate country. Hotel california starts strong, but then nosedives into country-esque dad rock. It threatens to get interesting again but it doesn't really hit the mark. I liked the last resort though and Hotel California is a classic.

Hard to find to listen to so may not have got a fair shake.

I thought I might like this album better than my pre-conceived notion that I didn’t, but I was wrong. It’s pretty awful. The three hits that open the album have always been annoying to me, although the title track has a Steely Dan reference (They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast). The other “hit” (Victim of Love) is meh. The Joe Walsh penned track “Pretty Maids All in a Row” was decent, though. The Eagles have two great songs in their catalog, Already Gone, a rocker that has great guitar work (but they didn’t write it) and I Can’t Tell You Why, an achingly beautiful ballad with a lead vocal by co-writer Timothy B. Schmidt (also in Poco, a great country-rock band).

Very melodic, reasonably calm, nothing intense or heavy. Victim of Love was probably my favourite. Not the biggest fan, felt a bit boring, but liked all songs enough to add them to a playlist.

just listen to the title track and you are done with this album. 1/5

Moments of bite, but an ever-present overtone of boredom.

me and Lebowski are on the same page with this band.

This is a protest rating, the album is fine but I would like Frank Ocean to be able to put Nostalgia ULTRA on streaming services and for the HHGTTG vinyl to be able to use the actual theme song not that shite Tomita-sounding (in a bad way) midi version

Just like the debut, two great singles (Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane) and a middling single (New Kid in Town) surrounded by awful to middling tracks. At least this album felt like it went by quick despite multiple songs dragging on way too long. Wasted Time felt like it wasted my time, and the reprise was wholly inconsequential. Pretty Maids All in a Row had awful singing, and The Last Resort was about 4 minutes too long. The Eagles are a singles band. Don't ever bother with whole albums, just listen to their greatest hits records.

Pretty meh record for me, it was anything but special and hotel california itselg felt like a drag listening back to it. Overall a pretty lackluster record with no real big depth or instrumentally anything big for me, don't get me wrong its fine to listen to, but it just isn't something that imprssed me, I liked certain tracks and thats it. Favorite track: try and love again. Overall score: 4.8/10

put the två stjärnor in the bag

jeff lebowski is correct

"Hotel California" is obviously such a classic and actually I had a lot of misgivings about it but I really like it's catchy and I love the harpsichord vibe you can have in it and with a good solo guitar. "New Kid In Town" is BORIIIIING, I mean it just sounds like every other cheesy rock songs back from those days but nothing catchy or cool in this one. "Life in the Fast Lane" is good, with a really good guitar riff which they keep during the entire song. There was also a really good bridge. "Wasted Time" again a cheesy song but this time the vocals are pretty good and the lyrics as well. The piano and the drums are working pretty nicely in together for once not too much guitars which was good. The end of the album wasn't bad but nothing really tremendous sadly. To conclude, not a bad album but not a good one either, too cheesy and boring sometimes, who am I to judge but well yeah that's not so good clearly.

Turgid album

Hotel California is a great song. One of the best, in my opinion. After that, I really lost interest in this album.

This album smells like chlorine and piss.

Ultimately this is a miss, but this album is REALLY funny. Like "Wasted Time" is such a dull, interminable song, but then they begin the B-side with a string reprise of it? That's funny. There's also some good instrumentation, mostly on the title track but here and there on other tracks

5/10 https://youtu.be/-JlmvtAHhnc?si=dREm-vFXzf1y500a

Baffling decision to follow up one of the best songs ever written with music that sounds like it was written to be in the background of barbecue YouTube videos. Last song is good though.

La verdad no me gusta Eagles, tiene algun que otro buen tema nomas.

I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin Eagles, man

OK! I get the idea. I can't really say there's anything wrong with the music itself, but it all starts to feel familiar, except for the title track, which is of course unique and landmark for a reason...

this sure do be an eagles album. 2.45 stars

I don't hate the Eagles quite as much as the Dude does, but their main value is as parody fodder with such classics as Life on the Fault Line. And who could forget that they made the song Hotel California so that the Moog Cookbook could give the world the most brilliantly demented cover of all time.

Listening to Hotel California is my Hotel California. I feel trapped and unable to leave. They are undoubtedly good musicians. But this is cheesy and the music is overplayed. If I never heard the song Hotel California again in my life I could die happy.

The Eagles have several jams (Lyin Eyes, I Can’t Tell You Why, etc.); alas, they are not to be found on this album. Love a singing drummer, although Don is a prick.

Ballads are straight 70s cheese, hits are good but hard to listen with having heard them 10000 times. Still, undeniable talent and quality music. Would be better with Screaming Man Chorus.

Surprisingly pretty good. I still hate the fuckin Eagles though.

Was lukewarm on their self-titled but I just don’t care one iota about this one.

I've only heard one song from this album before (you can guess which one) so I knew what sort of vibe it will have. The album was alright but also nothing stood out to me. Didn't have a bad time listening to it though, so I can't say it was bad. Just not spectacular. 2/5

Did the song Hotel California propel this into the talk of best album of all time? This album is a lot weaker than I thought it was going to be. I thought banger after banger was going to finger bang my ears when I pressed play. It’s been the complete opposite actually. The album just plods along with mostly half slow tempo songs. I take nothing great out of this album. Maybe this is the Eagles and I just haven’t realized that until now but if you take their hits and compare it to this album, you’d be very disappointed. Choice cut: Hotel California

I have not really listened to Eagles much. Hotel California is still sounds strong even after repeated exposure. The rest of the album is pretty bland nostalgia tinged American dad rock that did not float my boat.

Not terrible but not great either

The more rocky songs were decent, but the slower ballady are very boring and by the end that’s all that’s left.

I lowkey wasn't listening because I was coding. Hotel California lmao.

It's hard to be subjective when listening to Hotel California. The whole thing is so overplayed. It could be a work of genius. I'm just sick of hearing it. I still like Joe Walsh though.

1976 was something of a musical wasteland - the excitement of glam rock was gone, leaving only pomp rock, seedy disco and novelty songs while we waited for punk. This album is solid Dad Rock, and the first 3 tracks will be familiar to anyone who has ever heard one of those Jeremy Clarkson’s Driving Songs compilation tapes that you used to see in garages in the 80s. The hits are too well worn and the non hits aren’t that thrilling either. Snooze-tastic!

I actually knew only the title track, that is not that bad but too well worn. The rest of the album is lenghty dad rock. This album by itself is a good justification of punk rock; I would gladly have smashed their disc with my Dr Martens out of boredom.

Generally inoffensive, but not my style. Too radio-friendly American 'rock'.

Ooooh, Witch-ay Woman!

This is just... how do I rate this?! It feels like it transcends rating.

Best Song: Hotel California. Despite being overplayed, this song still feels like a perfect match of interesting storytelling, great lyricism, and wonderful guitar work. Worst Song: The Last Resort. A cringe finale to end it all off. Overall: Nothing in the rest of the album comes anywhere close to approaching the heights of the opening track. Technically proficient, but it still feels soulless to me.

hotel california and a bunch of mid shit

Hotel California is one of the most overrated albums in the pop/rock canon. One masterpiece track and two other pretty good songs do not make up for the other severely self-indulgent destinations of drivel the band decides to go. This record is pompous without having anything to back that attitude up. The most memorable things about this record for me would be that it feels remarkably plastic and repulsively unsexy (especially when Don Henley actively tries to make things “sexy”). Undeserved, self-aggrandizement and self-bloviation. Oh, and some DAMN good vocal harmonies too. 4/10

The title track is one of the most overplayed, overrated popular songs in history. The rest of the album isn’t much better.

classic, but a lil boring highlights: hotel california, wasted time, pretty maids all in a row

I feel bad about this review because I couldn’t hear it very well.

sanded balsa

Title track is a classic for a reason. Of course it has been played to a pulp, but that doesn't really detract from its many qualities. But the rest is not interesting enough at all. Ballad after ballad starts to feel like eating sugar cubes; sickly sweet but lacking any contrasting flavour. I mean, it's not technically bad but sometimes uninteresting is worse.

Wouldn’t purposefully listen to this album ever again. Mostly boring. The songs I already knew weren’t necessarily welcome because I’d never really liked them. The songs I didn’t know all sounded the same.

this is straight elton john

yes the title track bangs but everything afterwards is so bland

It was as if Joe Walsh was like, “hey check out all the cool stuff I can do” but then Hotel California ended and they decided, let’s play Life in the Fast Last and a bunch of boring slow jams. 2 stars

Except for the title track (excellent), it’s a middle of the road snore-fest that drags and drags and drags. Felt like hours long.

I don't know, man. Sure, Hotel California. But did they have to make everything sound so damn cheesy?

Some of the biggest dicks in pop music, trying to be as limp as possible.

Hmm. I really wasn't expecting to dislike this one, but here we are. Honestly, a bit of a drag. The title song is a staple in my country and it is always played shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve. Honestly, it's the main thing saving this album from 1 star. Life in the Fast Lane is decent too.

It’s been a long night and I hate the f*cking Eagles, man

Not for me

Hotel california is good, the rest blah

Its fine. I wouldn’t put it on myself but you can tell who they’ve influenced over the years. Drummer sounds like he’s playing on pillows and wine glasses.

New Kid in Town makes me want to poke my eardrums out with a pencil. I hate the fucking Eagles, man!! Joe Walsh is the only saving grace on this album. 2.0

Hyvästä soitannasta huolimatta tää ei vaan ikinä oo toiminu mulle

‘Hotel California’ is a super difficult album for me to rate and review. I don’t dislike this album, but I also don’t love it. To get the good stuff out of the way: the title track and ‘Life In The Fast Lane’ are hits for a reason. The former is an absolute classic with one of the most infectious chorus’ ever put to tape, paired with phenomenal melodic guitar work to finish things up. ‘Life In The Fast Lane’, meanwhile, is just balls out rock ‘n’ roll; fun and simple. In general the tracklist is pleasant, listenable, and accessible; and there’s a couple of surprisingly strong ballads. ‘Pretty Maids All In A Row’ and ‘The Last Resort’ are well worth a listen as it’s where the band truly flex their skill at arrangements and Don Henley’s smooth vocals really shine. The problem I have with this album is that I just don’t see, or hear, what makes it so special or as highly revered as it is. The 70’s is an absolutely STACKED decade in terms of artists and bands who made some of the most influential music of our time. And I can’t help but feel that ‘Hotel California’ may have been as “Mall Dad Rock” back then as it is now (just to be clear, I am a late 80’s baby - so I’m making a broad assumption here). The impression I get is that this album lives off the reputation of its commercial success (and its singles), rather than any kind of influence or shift it may or may not potentially have had on the music industry. So in probably one of my more controversial moves I’m giving this album a 2, despite the fact I mostly enjoyed it at surface level. Because it feels like a band concerned with checking off a list of what will sell instead of crafting a project out of genuine, meaningful inspiration.

Well, I knew what I was going to get

To quote Jeff Lebowski “I fucking hate The Eagles, man!” Just a juiceless album. No edge. Striving for profundity but missing the mark (The Last Resort feels almost like a parody). Begrudgingly giving it two stars because the title track is iconic and listenable, but the rest is pure dreck.

for the two things that you should listen to. could i write poetry to this? n

Hotel California and The Last Resort are great songs. Sandwiched between them is everything I hate about 70s rock.

Vitun pliisu

Hotel california is a good song, but man is it overplayed. The rest of this album is a snoozefest of dad rock. 2* mainly because hotel california.

Competent schmalz-rock balladeering. Goes in one ear and out the other, signifying very little that I can discern.

This is the album equivalent of when you're in high school and you are making a happy birthday banner for your friend but you don't space out the letters beforehand so you get overconfident and start with a huge H before quickly realizing that you're going to run out of room on the banner and all the other letters are going to be really small and ugly and won't come out anywhere near as cool as that first Letter. That guitar solo is pretty great though.

I feel like most people stop listening to this after the first three songs. The fourth song called Wasted Time aptly describes the rest of the album. I don’t like the Eagles. Hotel California is a good song.

Never heard this before today. Lotsa radio hits on side one, but side two struggled to hold my attention, not unlike an unsuccessful mindfulness meditation session. Never been a fan of their sound or hits but grudgingly respect the tune Hotel California. There is a small lyrical fight going on in it that amuses me - "They stab it with their steely knives" was apparently a reference to Steely Dan, to get back at them for their "Turn down the Eagles, the neighbors are listening..." I would love to learn the story of how Joe Walsh joined this band for this album. When I listen to the James Gang I do not hear anything that suggests he would be a good fit for this outfit.

To quote The Big Lebowski, "Fuck the Eagles.".

6/10 Highlights: Hotel California New Kid In Town

5,5/10 Highlights New Kid in Town Try and Love Again The Last Resort (vooruit, toch wel mooi)

Hotel California is excellent..... the rest didn't hold me

I think I fell asleep.

Pretty dull.

this was my first cassette tape!

i feel like this isnt my genre a bit too slow i need more energy from my music its only the 4th song lord hurry up why am i so disrespectful what is wrong with me i get the vision though its good i feel like i would like it if i was the target audience but im not my favorite song: i didnt really like any of them

It’s actually been a while since I last listened to Eagles. Doesn’t feel nearly as long as it’s been though. That’s probably because I’ve put more thought into every other form of music I listen to over this band. I actually didn’t hate their debut album. I reviewed it quite positively. Some people would say more positively than it deserves. But once I finished the album, and woke up the next day, I completely put it behind me. Simply because even if I found it enjoyable, there was very little that was actually noteworthy about it. And that seems to be a common theme across the rest of their catalog. At least to those who don’t like their music very much. A comment I made in that first review seems funny to me now. I mentioned how this band never seemed to be that popular from a critic viewpoint. Hotel California, on the other hand, completely destroys that claim. People simply won’t shut the fuck up about how good this is. This is everybody and their mother’s favorite 70s pop rock album. What do I think? If I were to devise a list of the most overrated and unnecessarily hyped up records ever, this would belong near the top of the list. This doesn’t have any right to be lauded as much as it is. The same people that drool over this will try to convince you that Rush is a shitty rock band. It has a decently strong start. The title track is obviously very well known, and not necessarily bad. But I’ll also never take anybody who claims it has the best guitar solo ever seriously. But other than Life in the Fast Lane, it’s all downhill from there. This album goes back and forth between sounding like two things. Either it’s some of the most unoriginal pop rock ever, or they are trying way too hard to sound like Elton John. Like really lackluster Elton John imitation songs. This is an album that I had to actively force myself to pay attention to. Anything mildly interesting that was going on in the debut is mostly gone. These songs also feel like they take a lifetime just to get over with. I can’t see the appeal. And I’m really not sure where all of the love is coming from. But music is subjective for this exact reason. Rating: 4/10

Hotel California, the song, is a timeless classic. Hotel California, the album, is an unnecessary drag.

Bangers: Hotel California ( i love its creepiness) Life in the Fast Lane (Joe Walsh's guitar mostly) I wasn't really in a 70s rock mood on this day.

They didn’t clean the sheets

I fuckin' hate the Eagles, man, but Life in the Fast Lane alone keeps it out of the basement. That song has the goods.

ohhhh shit! I get it now!!! "The Last Resort" is supposed to mirror "Hotel California" because a resort is like a hotel............fuck.

Meh, the Eagles have a couple of good songs that just happen to be on this album. I'll give them 1 star for each good song on the album.

I always love when an album like this has an absolutely banger opening and then the rest of the album sounds nothing like it.

Maybe I have heard the Eagles too often, but outside of Hotel California there is not a lot on this album. I really cannot like the whole album

Softer and less engaging than I expected. How is this band playing this fear?

Look, there are two good songs on this record. The rest is just boring. I’m astounded this album sold so many copies. I’m not an Eagles hater, I do like some of their music. I just don’t get the high level of hype. The title track is a classic.

I just don't think I'm a Eagles fan unfortunately. I like Hotel California alright and Life in the Fast Lane and New kid in Town were ok, but the rest of the album was comprised mainly of ballads that just didn't do it for me. I think as an album its not as an enjoyable of a listen as its lead song is. I did think the production was very good though.

Oh god do I have to? There is a precipitous drop off in energy and interest after the 3rd track. Those 3, all the singles, are not representative of the remaining 6 (actually 5 since one is a “Reprise” of another track ). Really expected more from a best selling album of its time. Wasted time indeed.

Utter 💩 1 extra star for not being steely dan

A come off good songs, but I just don't like it much.

Hotel California 3.5 New Kid in Town 2.3 Life in the Fast Lane 2.4 Wasted Time 2 Wasted Time (Reprise) 1.8 Victim of Love 1.9 Pretty Maids All in a Row 1.7 Try and Love Again 1.5 The Last Resort 1.4 Score: 2.055555556

Hotel California is a classic song but none of the others on the album really matched it for me.

Alright.

I should really dislike this and all that it stands for. But the songs are strong. It's hard to dismiss it easily. I never want to hear the title song ever again though.

The absolute epitome of style without substance. I got sick of hearing these guys back in the day and that hasn't changed.

tja... eerste nummer is goed, tweede redelijk en de rest is bagger

Would be a 1 without hotel california..

Titelnummeret er udødeligt! Kæmpe banger! Også selvom den er corny. Resten af pladen er også corny og relativt bangerless. Det må I godt sige til min far, tror sgu han er ligeglad med Eagles.

Hotel CA the song is great. Rest of album? Nope.

boring

Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the f***in' Eagles, man! This album is meh, their last decent album although I prefer the previous ones that sounded a bit more country. Hotel California is one of the most overplayed songs ever. It's all downhill from there.

The dude hates the Eagles, man.

hotel art for 70s rock

After the first Eagles album and finally this one with the famous "Hotel California" song that I listened to so many times (whether I wanted it or not), I can finally state that I don't like the Eagles style and music. It's still possible to tap my feet a bit during the listening session, but nothing more.

In typical Eagles fashion, there are 2 absolute bangers, and the rest of the album is mediocre or boring.

I'm with the Dude on this one

ehhhhh

One of the most dad albums I've ever heard. I do love some dad rock, but when I call this one dad rock, it's in the derogatory sense. Title track is a classic, despite a pretty mid chorus, and Life in the Fast Lane is like half a guilty pleasure. Besides those two, though, I can't say much here left an impression. There's better yacht rock that deserves more hype.

Boy I am struggling with this one. In the words of the Dude, I do not care for the Eagles. And yet, I can’t deny Hotel California is a pretty great song. And then there’s the rest of the album, which is underwhelming at best. I’m going 2 stars but it’s really 2 and a half, for the title track. So many other artists do this so so so much better (Flying Burrito Brothers) so it’s always hard to hear how huge this band is.

2.5 Okay I know we all hate the Eagles but this is generally fine. I woulda rated it 3 but the last song is overlong and sounds like something you’d sing at church camp

my problem with this album is two-fold: 1) i don't prefer the eagles, but if i am listening to them, i am listening to early period stuff, as i find the blatant country-rock stuff more interesting. this era of eagles does not move me at all 2) the only "compelling" song here is the title track, which i have grown to despise over the years due to excessive overplay and the general populace's insistence that it is a classic. this song genuinely makes me roll my eyes. i hate its shitty reggae beat. i hate its dumb "story". the guitar solo is its only saving grace. it's very overrated. the rest of the album is so run of the mill. and that's not to say I just outrightly hate the eagles - like I said, i don't prefer them but there are a handful of songs of theirs that i do genuinely like. i am not an "eagles hater" as much as i am an "eagles realist" - i do know them at their best. this is not that. apologies to all the boomer dads out there.

Not my kind of music

The musical equivalent of Wonderbread. I don't think I could name a single song off the album other than the title track. Just an incredibly unmemorable album that I am shocked made it onto this list.

Ignoring Hotel California. That song is so overplayed it's impossible to rate. The rest was boring dad rock. Some songs teased that they might go somewhere interesting, but they were just teasing apparently. 2.5*

Boring except for a couple songs

The Last Resort left a terrible preachy taste in my mouth

Not very interesting. Why is this in here?

It's classic rock, and plenty of big hitters, but just kinda boring and plain for me.

Eh. Not great. Don’t need this in my life.

Completely front loaded. Title track is great as is “Life in the fast lane”. New kid in town is fine. The rest is completely forgettable. This album is on the list for the 2 songs I listed above and that’s it

Thoroughly mediocre and forgettable. The title track is decent but also massively overrated. The rest is just a 100% unremarkable collection of songs.

Basic rock for basic people

First 3 songs are good. The rest is trash.

I've never listened to an Eagles album start to finish before and as a result it feels a bit dated to me. Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane are the standouts. Rest of it felt a bit bland.

5/10 Highlights: Hotel California The Last Resort Everything in between is dreadful

more dad rock… coooooool… is this album only on here bc of the titular track? the rest were whatever

Singles are bad and the album tracks too. Gets an extra star for victim of love, which is good.

not my taste

Other than Hotel California, I can't remember any of the other songs. Very samey.

I read that for this album they moved away from their normal country rock sound, but not far enough

Traumatic memories of my youth spent driving to family vacations with the Eagles, Dan Hill and Trooper as the soundtrack.

2.5 I feel like Eagles are one of those groups that public opinion has shifted a bit on in recent years. Like, despite being one of the biggest rock bands ever and having the single best-selling greatest hits album of all-time (and third best-selling album overall), I just don’t feel like you see a lot of Eagles fans anymore. You could make the argument that that’s bound to happen with any musical group as time passes, but in my experience, you still see fans of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, etc. floating around and preaching about them online, even among the Gen Z crowd, but you don’t really see anyone raving about Eagles anymore. And honestly, I think it’s because we’ve all come to the conclusion that their music is kind of lame and wasn’t really all that groundbreaking or influential after all. Or maybe that’s just how I feel, and I’m projecting here, either way, I didn’t really care for this album. Ok, don’t get me wrong, Hotel California is a fantastic track - There’s an iconic guitar hook to it, a well-crafted build-up, a great set of lyrics (“You can check out any time you want/But you can never leave”), and an absolutely amazing guitar solo. Honestly, I love this song and think it’s really the only claim to put forward as Eagles being a monumental group - but man, nothing else on this album sounds anything like that. Like wtf, Hotel California is followed by a country track? Who the hell’s idea was that? That track is at least followed by Life on the Fast Lane, the second best track on the album by default, but even then, it’s not a song I really care for. Despite its name, I don’t find it particularly interesting or exciting, especially being that I almost exclusively now associate the song with Cedar Point’s fastpass system, Fast Lane. No idea if they still use the song to promote it, but I swear you used to hear the chorus about every five minutes walking around the park. Not much else to comment on from there. The fact they named two songs the exact same thing is fun and not at all annoying or confusing, and the closing track The Last Resort was a pretty uneventful and slow way to end things on. The title track saves this thing from bad territory, but overall, mid across the board. I swear the only reason this album is regarded as iconic and sold so well is because it was riding the coattails of Their Greatest Hits, and it was from an era where if you just wanted to hear one song, you had to buy the whole damn thing (yes, I know singles existed, but you had to wait 2.5 months after this dropped if you wanted to own the title track).

Not the worst. I had heard several before. Sounds more of what my parents would listen to tbh.

A bit of a slog after the title track

Not a fan

This album is a lot of fine with a couple of great songs mixed in. A bit too soft rock for me all-around. (Also impossible for me not to see The Dude being annoyed.)

I hate the song Hotel California…so I endured.

It's hard for me to approach this album objectively. The problem I have with it is that these songs have been played to death. I'm sick of hearing them; sick of talking about how the Eagles sound "pretty". Its ethos is soooo 70s. By the time the 90s came along, I had completely moved on.

Another case of bloated single accompanying album

Gets a 2 just for Hotel California, and the only other track I know Life in the Fast Lane. Based on the rest of this album, I don’t understand the hype for The Eagles.

FAVO: Hotel California, Try and love again

One star for the title track, the reast really isn't my cuppa. Smells of football dads living it up while also reassuring themselves that they have feelings, too.

fckn boring

Não valeu a pena escutar além do hit no começo do disco.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this album all the way through. That’s probably true of most Eagles’ albums, honestly. All Eagles albums? Well let’s do this! Hotel California - great song! Jesus I’ve heard this a bazillion times. I don’t even have to hear it and pops into my head. I don’t even have to listen to it and I can review it. Honestly, if I never hear this song again I’d be happy. Maybe take a 10 year break or something. I have to comment on the supernatural, almost Satanic panic quality of this song. Trapped in some kind of ghostly ethereal hell. If you told me that the Eagles has sold their souls to the devil I’s believe you. Every one knows easy rock is the devil’s music. The Occult was Real, son. It was definitely a different era back then. “Haven’t had that spirit since 1969.” That line gets creepier with each passing year. Maybe 20 years ago this was 5/5, but now really overplayed. I mean it’s a punchline in a Marvel movie. 4/5 New Kid In Town - yacht rock! 2/5 Life In The Fast Lane - this whole album has to be about drugs? Right? This song’s a barn-burner, and the lyrics are just fantastic. 3/5 Wasted Time - I’ve never heard this song. For an Eagles song that’s crazy. Is it going to suck? I’ll admit I’ve got trepidations. Eh, no Desperado, but it isn’t actively terrible. Kind of amazed actually. Could have been a hit if it hadn’t been surrounded by other, better hits. 2/5 Wasted Time (Reprise) - maybe they thought this was the hit. Terrible idea to add this thing in. Actively detracts from the previous track. 0/5 Victim of Love - I mean I don’t have much to say other than 2/5. It’s fine. Just fine. For some reason I thought it was better. Pretty Maids All In A Row - Joe Walsh singing! Was Don Henley on a cocaine bender? Who knows. This is a snooze-fest. And kinda dumb. 1/5 Try and Love Again - Henley’s still on a bender but this one has a bit of the Eagles magic. 2/5 The Last Resort - oh boy, this pretty much sucks. Holy Christ it makes me wanna jam forks in my ears. Henley should have just hung out with his dealer. 0/5 2nd half really nose-dives. I mean it’s Hotel California and then everything else. That’s pretty expected. HC really is the Eagles’ best song by a country mile. Some of them get close but HC is just one of the greatest songs of the 70s. How do you compete with that? I’m giving this one a 2/5.

Over produced and boring.

Listened Before? No Back to the Eagles again... This time with the album that defined them as rock mega-stars. Album opens on pop rock anthem Hotel California. I've always interpreted it as an elongated metaphor for addiction, its temptations / availability, and how it separates people from other things that they love ("bring me my wife [...] we haven't had that spirit here since 1969", "you can checkout any time you'd like, but you can't never leave"). For all the crap the Eagles get, and for all the pain this song has brought to cover bands and karaoke bars alike, I would be remiss not to admit this as a timeless jam. Beautiful, languid structure; effective lyrics; and a serviceable guitar solo, breakdown. Apparently New Kid in Town was the lead single; odd that I've never heard it before. Odd choice of single to me. This song is a crappy country rock ballad, with surgical sounding drums. To be fair, the harmonization is nice and some of the guitar licks are nice. But this is a quick skip for me on any given day. On the other hand, Life in the Fast Lane is my favorite Eagles song of all time. Very 70s dad-rock vibe about it that openly compares to ZZ Top. I just enjoy the propelling nature of it and that guitar hook is :cheff-kiss: Wasted Time is another snore-worthy ballad. I mean, the orchestral elements and reprise are fine and all, but seems weird to put this after Life in the Fast Lane. Anyway, I've lost steam to care about this album now that I'm at Pretty Maids in a Row. This album was not made for me. The album starts with a lot of steam between Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane, but is otherwise devoid of reason to listen. I'm a 2 / 5 with really the only points gained by those two tracks. Otherwise, this just ain't it for me. Added to Library? No

Hotel California? More like Hotel Calibornia. Hahahaha the Eagles lost yesterday this is perfect. Let’s see if this has anymore heat to it than Philly’s offense last night. Starts off with probably the most popular Eagles song as the title track. For all the times I’ve heard this it still holds up pretty well. What a snoozer of a second song. Next. Life in the Fast Lane is another popular one. Solid track. Maybe someday I’ll find that Wasted Time is not a waste of time, but that day is not today. Enjoyed the reprise a bit more tbh. Victim of Love I’ve heard but doesn’t really go anywhere minus that one solo. Honestly the second half of this album sucks to me. Eagles can make some solid hits but I’ve yet to hear a whole really good album. So meh.

the album didn't feel stronger than its title track. i wish i had more to say, but it fell flat in a way i was not expecting, and i found myself ignoring it.

Gear: Focal Clear (ZMF) Mische (2013 Remaster): Referenz Mugge: "Man, come on. I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!" Wertung: 2/5

I gave this a fair shot, but it didn't do much for me. Hotel California is a decent song, though pretty played out. Life in the Fast Lane is tiresome to listen to. The rest of the album just kind of reminded me of bad CSN&Y songs, the best of which is maybe The Last Resort...best in that it sounds to me the least like the Eagles.

The Eagles just aren't very good. This one does have a handful of decent singles though, so that's something. The rest... nah 2/5

Very average

Being a musician in the 60s/70s must've been so cool, all you needed was to write a single banger (hint: it's the title track) and now your entire album gets recognised forever after as a rock classic, just because that one song is now repeating endlessly on every boomer rock radio station. Doesn't matter how entirely uninteresting all those other songs are, it's now an essential album that everyone must listen to. Why? Who cares! Just slurp up that radio rock slop you peasant!

One song album

Honnêtement déçu, le premier morceau est évidemment incroyable mais après on se fait chier je trouve

2 - Boy, this was rough. The first two songs are good. The rest was soooo damn boring. It was all so sappy and limp, I hated it. I understand maybe one or two sappy songs, but the rest of the album after the first two songs is like that. It was aggravating. I didn't get to listen to the last couple minutes of the last song during my listening session, but I highly doubt those couple minutes would affect my rating, so I'm not gonna bother finishing it. Could have been a 2.5 or maybe even a 3, but the majority of this album sucked ass, so I'm leaving it at a 2. Better than the other Eagles album I listened to, but not by much.

No, you don't need to redirect my attention to the rock history books that this record was massively successful and impactful on pop culture. I get it, 'Hotel California' and a couple of the other tracks are iconic, but to my ears the remainder of the record is bland, trite and corny. Let's go back in time and split this album into a couple of EPs instead so I can rate them as a '3' and a '1'.

Too American 🦅🦅🦅🦅

Hotel California is the only memorable song on this album.

Hotel California is OK. All the other songs terrible.

I am just going to start this off by saying- it's not bad, but holy shit Hotel California is overplayed. I am so damn tired of listening to Hotel California on the radio over and over again- and those who rate it highly, usually have hollow music taste. sorry. :/ the song 'Hotel California' leans the most heavily into the 'pop-surfer-rock' genre while toting the country rock genre. Not my steeze, but ill probably still sing to it just because its silly to make fun of. The rest of the album flops back and forth between the soft and the brash. I will give it credit for this diversity at best.

I’m on board with the title track being a classic and it’s kind of epic. Otherwise, the ballads on this album really don’t do anything for me I’d say I only really liked a few songs. Life in the Fast Lane was fun. Overall, I don’t really dig soft rock, I guess.

Thoughts whilst listening: Released in 1976! It's got Hotel California on it! You know, from Guitar Hero. This has got that sleazy, polished, string-section-y, feel of what I remember was on the radio in the seventies. Makes me think of the era of that Convoy song and Song for Guy by Elton John and I'm Not in Love by 10cc. That sort of stuff. And that stuff doesn't really chime for me unless I'm in a very specific mood. Maybe if it was on the soundtrack of a Paul Thomas Anderson film I'd get into it in an ironic hipster way. Did anyone see Licorice Pizza? I really got into Let Me Roll It by Wings off of that soundtrack. What a tune! Would it be wrong to say this way Country and Western Beatles with a bit of Disco? I dunno. I'm sort of getting into it and the seventies vibe as it goes along and I think back to the time. It's undeniably rich with musicality, key changes, guitar solos, all that. But I don't think I'll listen to it again. It's just a cultural thing. I'm more likely to listen to Saturday Night by Whigfield, not because it's BETTER, but just because it has more cultural meaning to me, personally. I dunno. I'm sort of vibing with it* as we get toward the end. Try And Love Again has a kind of Neil Young feeling to it. And you have to remember that the Eagles brought about the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy theme tune. Okay, I'm really looking forward to The Last Resort ending now so I can play Let Me Roll It. And then by Saturday Night by Whigfield and Convoy by C.W. McCall. UPDATE: I really know nothing about The Eagles so was checking out there other albums afterwards and I think I'm going to be the "I prefer their earlier stuff" guy. "Take It Easy"? "Desperado"? "Journey of the Sorcerer" That's more like it! *As the young people say.

Probably don't need another Big Lebowski quote on here so we'll skip that. This album is...fine. The title track is great but even that I normally skip when it comes up on a playlist or the old fashioned radio. I confess that I had never actually listened to this whole album, and I don't feel like I ever will again. Victim of Love was the only other song I really liked on this album and I'm not sure I had ever actually heard it before. I have Life in the Fast Lane with a passion. In the end, this is The Eagles and I'm just not a fan.

Yksikään biisi ei tuota varauksetonta nautintoa, eikä koukuta nautinnottomastikaan. Avausraidassa on ideaa, niin myös parissa muussa. Mutta kaiken kaikkiaan musiikkia sävyttävä grooven (siis minimaalisten virheiden) korvike, eli tietty keinotekoinen, sulava notkuvuus, vie viimeisetkin halut kuunnella mitään uudelleen.

Since the last time I had listened to this in full, I became a dad. I thought, maybe I’ll get the fuss about the Eagles now. I didn’t.

Wraparound Oakley's: On Cigarette: lit B*tch ex-wife: left me Dodge ram: 85 mph It's life in the fast lane time 😎

Very much something my dad listens to

I don't even know how to rate this. The songs are fine. First three tracks got played nonstop on commercial radio for 30 years for a reason. But man it just sucks for some reason. Maroon 5 for boomers

One good single, everything else is completely forgettable. Honestly, incredible in a way

Hotel California song is great, but the rest of the album is dull.

truly suspected to think more highly of this record

Everyone loves Hotel California, it's reputation speaks for itself. New Kid in Town is just okay in my mind, it's forgettable and a little lacking in substance. It kind of strikes a similar chord to Billy Joel's Updown Girl except more somber. Life in the fast lane starts out better and gives me memories of 5 guys visits. Vocals are again, lacking in substance and for me. It feels like music from a by-gone era, possibly something that would reverberate quietly in the bathroom of a BBQ restaurant. Wasted time is exactly what the title states. A reminiscent song for which I have no times to reminisce on. Guitar carries the vocals the enitre time. Orchestral variant is significantly better. Victim of Love was not my style at all. Pretty Maids all in a Row had promise, I thought it was going to be my favorite until the vocals came in. He alternates between too loud and too quiet, while trying to mimic the nasal quality of an electric guitar. Try and love again had some good parts, the ending made me turn my volume down though. Last resort was a better ending. Well put together and I enjoyed it. Second place to hotel California.

My dad likes the eagles, and maybe it's the nostalgia/thinking its old but I definitely think its over-hyped. Hotel California the song is iconic, but I don't really care for anything else they've done.

So boring

Too slow, too whiny. The Eagles sound like they're trying to imitate real emotions and they can't quite get it right.

Not really my cup of tea, even Hotel California the track I'm not too bothered about. Not my sound. Standout track: Life in the Fast Lane

I can see why the Eagles are one of my grandparents' favorite bands. None of the songs really caught my attention, but they weren't unpleasant. Seems like my tastes aren't specialized enough to appreciate their talent. Not sure if eponymous track stands out because there is something different about it, or because it is the most popular. 4.5/10

I wouldn't have ever chosen to listen to the whole album without prompting. The album was alright but certainly not one of my favorites.

i have never liked this band. in my opinion, you would be hard pressed to find a band more overrated than the eagles. and listening to this album did not change my opinion. the music of the eagles is soulless corporate schlock. it is southern rock without the balls. and even when it tries to be “heavy”, like in the song “victim of love”, it falls short. in fact, the only thing remotely interesting about this band is that it is mostly comprised of what used to be linda rondstadt’s backing band. in short, if you want to listen to southern rock, listen to the real deal, bands like skynyrd and allman brothers. stay away from this shite.

Started strong with Hotel California but quickly dropped off and I was getting quite bored by the end.

Somehow wasn't bothered by any of the other songs bar Hotel California...

this was possibly the worst album to start me out on lol it's, like, fine, but there's no edge, nothing that really hooks me. every song kinda just sounds the same

Quite good, not my type of rock - but a good listen.

We all can check out anytime we want but we can never leave. We're always bombarded with the Eagles music. They're great at selling boring music for the masses.

Take away the title track and no one would even whisper a single word of praise about this

First 3 songs are solid, but then it drops of massively. Pretty weak as a album overall.

It was alright, I don’t have many strong feelings about this album. I don’t think I’ll be listening to it again. 2/5

Vähän kulunut levy kyl, en jaksanu innostua enää. 2/5

Favourites: • Hotel California

The title song actually is pretty good, other than that, this album doesn't need to exist

A couple of songs here are good I guess. I don't like it. It's very boomer sounding.

Just... fine. Nothing to write home about, but nothing horrendous either.

I had a rough night, and I hate the fucking Eagles, man.

The thought of seeing an Eagles album, knowing that it would be here for sure was kinda scary... I decided to dive right into it, using my AirPods. Glad I did, cause I can actually hear the production. Listening to these songs again sound daunting, so put on some great headphones and try to hear it differently. Hearing these songs again on a random radio station is a quick press to turn off. Done. With headphones, it's much better, maybe moved it up a 1/2 star. Except for the title track, New kid in town, and Life in the Fastlane, this album is horrible.

I can't listen to this album one more time...

Offensively inoffensive. 1.5/5

bland. The Dude was right

Hotel and Fastlane were probably good the first few hundred times I heard them. The rest of the album just felt washed out. Like a copy of a copy of a copy.

Incredibly boring

The title song is a banger, but the rest of the album is meh

I was waiting for this album to come up. I had a feeling I wouldn’t enjoy it. I wasn’t disappointed.

"Hotel California" is a masterpiece of classic rock with lyrics, guitar works, and tunes that I'll never get tired of. Still remains as one of my favorites of all time. I'm talking about the song, not the album, btw.

Self-indulgent tripe, carried by Joe Walsh. Would happily never hear anything by the fucking Eagles ever again.

I know the Eagles are meant to be evil, but had somehow never got round to listening to their main record. Greatly disappointed by the lack of the diabolic. Instead, I found patchy, occasionally enjoyable pastiche. Some poor Neil Young vocal impressions early on offset by the strange transition in "...Fast Lane" from ZZ Top to, christ, I don't know what, disco synth? The lyrics didn't linger, apart a mention of "shadows coming to stay", with or without Cliff Richard not mentioned, which would have had material impact on their already respectable coke bill. Later, I looked up the lyrics. Dear crike they’re awful.

The famous songs are the good ones. Last song is truly awful. Polar opposite of Rumors - here the bad reputation is well-deserved

Nooit veel aan gevonden, vandaag ook weer niet.

Allemachtig..... op het tandvlees uitgezeten. Wat een ontzettende gezapige bende is dit toch.

If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Dat ga ik nu doen.

"I had a rough night, and I just hate the fucking Eagles man." - el Duderino Despite growing up on a heavy diet of classic rock, I had never actually listened to this album. I guess my dad wasn't much of a fan. I don't remember him ever playing the Eagles. Now I know why. This album sucks. I can't help but have a soft spot for the classic rock radio hits, but the rest of this album is pretty shit. I really enjoy some countrified rock music, vocal harmonies, and guitar solos. I even love me a lot of soft rock, but holy shit, the songwriting and choices here are horrible. It isn't outwardly abrasive, so there's that. The production is good. Try and Love Again is a decent enough soft rock song, but the whole run of Wasted Time>Reprise>Victim of Love before it is just embarrassingly bad. The Last Resort ends this album perfectly - on another terrible note. 1 point for production, 1 point for the hits, 1 point for Try and Love Again, and 1 point for the fact that I was able to sit through the whole thing. I listened to this on vinyl, and I posted it for sale on Discogs as soon as it was done. 4/10

I knew going into this project that albums like this would come up. Songs that were all over the radio, at shops, at parties, songs that I hated and couldn't avoid. CCR, Queen, Eagles, Led Zep. Classic Rock. Urrghh. Skilled guitar playing - points for that. Nice solos. But it's the ultimate cocaine fueled cliche overblown dad rock. This is why we have punk music.

Too bland for me

Songs are either totally epic or totally bland. I guess a couple bangers carry the rest of the trash.

Titular track was overplayed during my 'drinking days' so I skipped it. The rest didn't really do anything for me. I know people love this, but it doesn't excite me at all. 2 stars as a couple of tracks were OK as background music.

The whole is not necessarily greater than the sum of its parts.

The titular track is a classic, but the rest of the album is completely forgettable. A bit sad, really.

I know this album quite well from my youth, and the main reason I never listen to this album is due to the immensely overplayed ànd overrated title track. I could never again go past the first track. Now I've listened to it again and with one exception, Life In The Fast Lane, this entire album to me tries to balance the line between emotion and kitsch. But too many times falls over to the latter (Pretty Maids All In A Row, Wasted Time, The Last Resort) that this is an unlistenable mess. It's just really not for me. Glad I did the re-listen though.

I hate the Eagles with an abiding passion. Their music was always banal and the worst part was that they were unavoidable - everywhere you went back in the day, there they were.

Hotel California is a perfect song, knocked it out of the park with that one. I did not really enjoy the rest of the album. The ballads were just excruciating. All the singing/playing/production is top notch, perfectly done, but at times it’s a little too easy-listening for me.

It tends to be floated around that Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan are better as songwriters than musicians, and their songs are notably better when performed by other artists. In my opinion, this can't be further from the truth. Meanwhile, the Eagles exemplify this concept to a T. As a band they are dull and boring with very little offered from their voices or musicianship. That being said, they are able to craft very nice melodies and decent lyrics which is highlighted in this album. Although, I guarantee I would be able to find better versions of each of these songs. Apparently, I may be in the minority with this opinion, but other than some solid early tracks, this album doesn't do too much with insightful subject matter or even good songs.

I really can’t stand the eagles but the album was pretty ok: still not giving them a 3

I tried my best to listen and like this but I couldn't. The Eagles were my Dad's favorite band, and if the sounds were all as good as Hotel California I would love it, but this album is way too cheesy for my taste.

Yeah, s'alright, innit?

I expected to hate this, given that I hate “Hotel California.” I didn’t hate it but I never want to listen to it again.

The songs I didn't already know are quite forgettable. Wondering how this generic of a band could become so famous? Just gives me slimy dad vibes. No, thanks.

Apart from the title track, nothing really stood out.

Very good, very easy to listen to, not really something I like too much of though

Only really listened to the title track, we'll see if I agree with the dude. Other than the title track which is good for testing audio equiment, the eagles suck. 2 star album, pretty bland except for the title track.

The single is a classic, the rest of the album is not

every track a solid smooth radio listen… too nice for me.

Very of its time - but don't think it's aged particularly well for a modern listener. What was already 'dad rock' 25 years ago, is now becoming 'grandad rock', and not in a particularly good way.

dont mind hotel california but otherwise a bit dull

Hotel California is a great tune, and Wasted Time has a pretty chord progression. Victim of Love not too bad. But as whole, it's just so fucking _naff_... Just like Queen, too often this album sounded like fodder for talent show contestants to cover, but in this case all sugary and faux-emotive. Horrid. Was a relief to get to the end. Bonus stars: Enjoyment: 0.5/2 for the tunes above Quality: 0.5/2, ditto 2*, which feels generous.

Hotel California is an all time classic, the rest is unlistenable

I hadn't listened to this in many years. I didn't remember that most of the sing-along favorites aren't in this album, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I my incorrect memory of it led me to expect.

Albums a classic in the zietgiest, not sure if it's a classic to me. Starts strong with hotel California which speaks for itself. Then I forgot how awesome life in the fast lane is, saved for later. Then we get out of the fast lane for much of the rest of the album. Slow ballads pretty much from here on out. They may be good or even great ballads but they are not my style. It's been a long night and I don't "fucking hate the eagles man", but I don't see myself coming back to this hotel anytime soon.

Country Rock. Fucking Eagles. 2 Songs are ok.

I tried. But I just can’t.

Вот это уныние. Неудивительно, что в остальном мире, к счастью, это группа одного хита.

2,5 na real. Fracão, três musicas realmente boas.

You can still smell the Brut on every track. Even though some of the components should click with this Steely Dan head, it's still not happening for me except with the title track. The smug macho stuff devoid of irony is a tougher sell now. And the outro of The Last Resort is interminable still.

1984. je. Billy Ray i Joanna iz misesipija imaju 20 godina. Upravo su se vjenčali. Idu voditi ljubav prvi put u hotelskoj sobi.

Great album if you're a soft boomer trying to sell an F150

One of the stronger pillars of my parents’ marriage is their shared hatred for Hotel California to the point where I was not allowed to play it on Guitar Hero World Tour in their presence. I don’t share the same level of disdain, but there’s not much to like here either.

The famous songs are the good ones. Last song is truly awful. Polar opposite of Rumors - here the bad reputation is well-deserved

C'est une bonne toune hôtel califournia Je connaissais la deuxième aussi mais pas le reste. L'album est pas si pire mais rien accote les deux premières tounes J'aurai écouté l'album complet une fois dans ma vie..

i'm not quite as emphatica about it as his dudeness but i don't really like the eagles. Its like country plus.

I don't like it, and never did.

"Hotel California" is a stupid song. Fight me. While I don't hate "Life in the Fast Lane" or "Victim of Love" everything else is either too schlocky and/or elevator music. 2.5/5 stars

Another album that is impossible to separate from pre-existing impressions, prejudices etc. And I have just heard Hotel California too many times! Can I place myself in the position of someone hearing it for the first time? What would I think? Pretty solid but does not resonate for me. Coincidently - just watched the Big Lebowski - which would get a 4 or even a 5

This should just be a 45 with the title track on one side and "New Kid on Town" on the other. I'm hard pressed to think of another record that comes out swinging as hard as this one does and then disappoints further and further with each successive track, all the way to the last seconds of its merciful conclusion. How the same decade that gave us Taxi Driver also made this band a gargantuan success is something I'll never fully understand.

Hotel California is a bop, was interested to hear some of their other songs... I am no longer interested.

this sounds like what a white 40-60 year old man who regular abuses people (particularly women) listens to while driving on a sunny day to escape his own problems. hotel california is okay though.

Eh. Extra star to support eagles learning to play musical instruments…. Live your dreams, birbs

The first song will make any bbq amazing and then the rest of the album will be playing I guess?

This is a prime example of a top heavy album. The opening track is incredible, and New Kid in Town is great too, but things just slowly decline from there and the entire B side is just forgettable dad rock

I found this strangely disappointing- I wanted it to be more than it is.

Starts out with a bang, quickly fades into a whisper. There is only one good track here, the rest is all forgettable dross

Hotel California is a great track, but I have heard it way too often. The album has two more great songs, but the rest I don't care about. 2/5

Not a big fan before this listen and that's not changed. I can see why the 3 most popular tracks are the only 3 I ever really hear - the rest are average at best

Strong start but oof there were some stinkers later on

Listen, they clearly know their way around a song or two. But it is truly all so... perfunctory. Where's the passion lads? Where's the unusual turns? It's all very pleasant. Very competently crafted. Don't get me wrong, music needs its craftsmen - so actually maybe crafted is the wrong word - it's competently designed. Like an Ikea table. As an Ikea table will serve its purpose for people who understand a table is necessary and just want it to put their plates and vases on, so the Eagles serve a purpose as music for people who don't need their music to do anything more than be music.

Hotel Cali Boring Ya

Saved Prior: Hotel California Off Rip: New Kid In Town Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Didn't really like this. Hotel California the song is incredible though.

Welcome to the most underwhelming album. Such an okay place Least it has some grace

Yeh, alright, recognised the obvious tracks. Hotel California etc. Not really my bag though. 2/5

I have such a strange relationship with this band. Absolutely recognize and appreciate the talent they have and work they put in. Vocal harmonies are incredible. But most of their songs...sorry, I just don't get pulled in by them. Totally get why they are revered; just not by me.

Terrible.

Production: 9/20 Songwriting: 7/20 Innovation: 4/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 5/20 =25 Overblown bollocks

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Two are okay. Hotel California is not.

Helt okej

ingen favorit direkt men kan förstå att vissa uppskattar det.

Despite myself, I still have a soft spot for the title track. But after that, the album is just pop rock. Competent, sure, but overwrought, especially when the Eagles try to include strings or keys in the arrangement. Stick to something that has a little soul to it.

Balls…. Sounds the osmonds do country ballads. Just plain old dull!

Really not my bag

the only album so far I've actively resented having to listen to. trash
