Reviews (page 11 of 13)
First of all, I am an avid listener to music and have a wide taste across a lot of genres. I am also of an age where this album has been known to me since it's launch. Maybe it's just me, but I just find it incredibly dull and a really hard listen to get any enjoyment out of this album. Not for me I'm afraid, I know it rocks a lot of your boats, mine is safely still in the harbour.
Much too blues forward for my liking. I can see how people would enjoy this but definitely not my cup of tea. Best: Statesboro Blues Worst: Hot 'Lanta
Cliché. Bonne musique mais une peu générique. Overrated. Album live qui n'apporte rien.
That guy could play some mean slide guitar, shame they couldn't write any songs.
slow rock beats to fall asleep to
Very instrumental
not really my thing, but feels like its right up dad's alley
I'm not much for redneck rock, but Duane Allman was a hell of a blues player.
For a live album on this list, nothing special.
Oh boy! A Hammond B-3 organ! Twelve-bar blues repeated ad infinitum! Extended soloing! Gruff faux-soulful singing! Tracks that take up the entire side of an LP! Duane Allman and Dickey Betts both have great guitar *tone*, but like Santana, Clapton and the numerous other guitar slingers that show up on this list, the soloing doesn't have any real direction and ends up just sounding like texture. Spread that over a 22+ minute song and it's a bit much.
This album is so good
I guess I have to be in the mood for the Allman Brothers,, at times I like them, but I wasn’t feeling it today. Maybe it was a selection of songs. I’m actually a big fan of live music so I’m sad that this didn’t tickle my fancy.
A live Allman Brothers Band, what a chore! Honestly what is this doing here? Whether this show has some historic significance I don’t know, but as an album it was just boring. Really meandering with the same guitar lick played again and again. Not for me.
i'm sure this would've been a fun show to be at. unfortunately i'm just sitting here at my desk getting more and more annoyed. WRAP IT UP!
well, i went into this thinking that i liked the allman brothers band. i've never been more excited to see a song that's *only* five minutes long. favorites: statesboro blues, hot 'lanta
Eh
Just too jammy for my tastes. Like there is nothing wrong with the playing or singing its just the proportions of both. Most of the tracks go like this, start with an instrumental opening for 2 minutes, get a verse for 30 or 40 seconds, back to noodling around guitar for 8 minutes, to a refrain for 20 seconds, back to an hour of guitar ad nauseum. Its just not my style. It feels directionless in a way. Its funny to listen to the crowd try and clap and cheer for the end of a song only for it to go on for 15 more minutes every time. I felt that in my soul. Id much rather listen to album versions of any of these tracks.
Meh
Not my style.
Liked it personally but took an effort to really enjoy it.
They're a great jam band. No disrespect to them or what they did for jam bands, but I'm just into weirder stuff. The Allman Brothers can feel... uninventive and repetitive.
decent
Was feeling a bit ill while listening to this one. It took several songs to realize that my brain associates the Allman Brothers with long car rides my parents took me on as a kid, so unfortunately this music is the sound of carsickness to me. Couldn't finish the album, but the music itself was fine!
I note this is ranked number 2 in Rolling Stone's list of the greatest live albums of all time. If someone asked me what I thought of this album I'd say I found it long and boring. The musicians are accomplished and they are clearly a tight band but southern rock just doesn't really connect with me.
The Allman Brothers Band has never really been my cup of tea as far as '60s and 70's rock goes, however, I liked this a little more than I thought. Let's talk about the shorter songs first. The problem is that I just don't really gel with any of them regardless of how good the performances are. Sure, they are technically doing a great job, but I've previously mentioned that this sort of blue rock is kind of whatever to me. Now, of greater interest is the jams here. And I will say, I like a good jam, but I am kind of picky. These songs, comprising nearly 3 full sides of the album are a mixed bag to me. I don't think You Don't Love Me is really worth the 20 minute for example. However In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed is something I can connect a little more to. The playing is super emotive, and I think the pacing and instrumental phrasing makes the whole song work really well. And Whipping Post is somewhere in the middle. I think the performance is a little overlong, and the pacing is a little uneven, but there are some pretty transcendent moments of full band guitar music across the 23-ish minute piece. The highs here are interesting enough that it saves At Filmore East (a little bit) to me. However, I still don't get a ton out of the full package.
Like ya knowww, whatever! It’s for others, it’s not for me. The jam band + live album thing will be forever missed on me, sorry all!
Not mine
Sometimes less is more.
Looking at the Wikipedia entry, successive modern era releases of this album seem to have grown like topsy, reaching 6 hours by 2014. I'm wondering if that's justified. I played the original release (which I used to have in my collection), and as far as I can see this is largely a vehicle for Duane Allman's slide guitar virtuosity. The trouble is that extended tracks with over the top guitar heroics don't really make for great listening. I think this is bad enough as a regular double album. I certainly couldn't countenance playing a 6 hour long version of it.
Whipping post is ok
This is a case of good musicians but music that just didn’t interest me.
3 stars normally, it being a live album and not a particularly well done one drops it a star
Lots of wandering disjointed mostly instrumental jam tracks, and not even a studio recorded version. Not my thing.
Eh, 1.5 stars would probably be most apt
The Allman Brothers still aren't for me.
We got a long album yesterday, too. please stop this, algorithm. This album was, again, fine. I like this genre, and the music was fine, but I've never cared much for live albums. If I go to a live show, I'm there for live music. If I listen to an album, it's because I want a studio version. Recordings of live albums are just never as good as actual live music.
This album feels pointless. I would feel ripped off if I went to this concert. I get that it's not all about vocals and whatnot, but there could be some more. The guitar and drums playing is really good, but the same throughout the whole album. Do something else. It leaves me wanting more and less at the same time. And what's the point of this being live? There are a few instances of talking to the crowd and a few instances of cheering from the audience. But other than that, we get full 20 minute stretches of the boring playing with some admittedly beautiful vocals. Like, there really is nothing wrong with this album. It's just boring and pointless.
There is no world where a 20+ minute version of Whipping Post is needed. Overly long and pointless.
September 15, 2025: The Trump administration has changed the name of the hit song on this album to "Voluntarily Hugging the Nifty Post." The band must now be referred to as the All Man Band. Thank you for attending to this matter.
Jam band that I didn't have the patience for. Felt like the songs blended together in a way that was more sameness instead of cohesive.
Just a generic rock album, nothing to see here
Southern rock is just not my thing. That said, this was a good live recording from a technical perspective - sounds solid.
Their third album (Live). Rock / Blues. This is okay. Good musicianship and sounds great for a live album. It is basically an album of seventy eight minutes of jamming that meanders and doesn't really go anywhere. I've heard it now and doubt I'll revisit.
I own this on SACD. It honestly doesn’t seem to deserve this treatment since it’s such a thin-sounding compressed recording. I’ll give it another listen today.
I don’t listen to live albums for groups I actually like, so this was definitely trying. It’s a jam band, they jam, sometimes they meander into styles I’m not the biggest fan of. Would be a true 2.5/5 if I could.
2 stars. Would have been less without Whipping Post.
It's not that I dislike the Allman Brothers Band, I just don't particularly like them either.
I never need to hear a 20 minute jam blues song I think. Also I was listening to the deluxe version which has a 30 minute jam blues song but I switched over to the standard version before that came on fortunately. I’m never going to particularly enjoy these types of albums but I don’t think they’re necessarily bad or anything just not for me. 2/5
Fun life hack. If you include this with the instructions of “ 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die ” you can extend your life a decent about thanks to the egregious length of some of these songs. I was fine having some of this on in the background as pleasant enough standard blues-ish jamming. And then some solos got way too obnoxious to be background music. Listening to live albums is like listening to your friend tell you what they dreamed about last night.
Good lord, the white man loves his masturbatory guitar solos and endless jams. This bored me silly. I appreciated the first 40 mins or so, obviously exceptional guitar playing, and I do love the blues (if not so much this derivative, blues rock.) But when they went full jam band, it got interminable.
Good
It might be because I have had a few particularly similar albums in a row but this felt really generic and lacking of originality.
Solider Blues Rock
ok. Sound little old for me
I usually enjoy live albums more but I found the “jam” quality of the songs to be tedious.
2/5 Best Track - "Statesboro Blues"
drawn too far out! could’ve been good but I can’t listen to that many guitar solos. Maybe it’s my decrepit attention span, worn down by apps of infinite scroll, but this is tiring.
I did not use a private Spotify session for this one. The more blues records, especially live ones, that this site has me listen to the more I realized I don't really like the blues. It's all seems similar: standard beat, walking bass line, and a 4,5,1 chord progression on the guitar. Throw in some uninspired lyrics and a a bunch of solos. I did make into the jam band part of the album, which was better but still not my thing. I will save the jam band rant for later.
i listened to this twice on accident because i had forgotten i ever listened to it the first time.
Would have been awesome to be there and experience. I wasn't though. 2 stars.
This feels like a “You just had to be there” live album. I’m sure if you were in the audience (and maybe partaking in the substances of the time) this would’ve been mind blowing. Just listening to this in an office many years later just doesn’t hit and they noodle on for too long.
There's *multiple* songs on this that are 20-minute, mostly-instrumental jam sessions? What are you doing to me here?
Listened to this while playing Evacuation. I won. Well, this album was good until it wasn't anymore. It is like that drunk person at a party who is entertaining for a while, but then it's like "enough already" and you just wish they'd leave. That was my experience listening to this.
Can they play live? Yes. Is it boring as hell? Undoubtedly.
I honestly try to approach all these albums with an open mind but I’m increasingly finding that if it’s live, has fewer than 10 tracks and yet somehow lasts longer than an hour, then it’s probably not for me. I can hear that they are good musicians, I just don’t think endless jamming is my jam.
Meh
I like live albums a lot usually, but some of the tracks on here are too long to keep my attention. It's extra difficult when there's no singing involved and it's only instrumental.
Fine
Meh
Bluesy baby
Not awful blues live album just long ass songs
Prenons "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". "You Don't Love Me" dure plus de 19 minutes. Dix-neuf minutes.
Blues rock good background music for more people hanging out but not a big fan of this sound. I would rather listen older real blues
Generic blues, not that groundbreaking
The jambanding is too much for me.
Not a concert I would've enjoyed. A lot of jam session and not a fan. Instruments played well
Not a fan of live albums. Audio quality is t great.
Guitar riffs forever - the most, longest guitar solos ever.
Not for me. I don't doubt they're a talented band, but even listening to the shorter 1971 version of this album (opposed to the 3+ hour 2014 re-release version), it still feels too long.
If it wasn’t for the technical ability of the guitar playing, this album with its two 20 minute tracks can get fucked
Famous Dave’s music. Most of the songs sounded the same to me. Also, we don’t need to be making 20 minutes long songs. It’s too much. 2 stars
Teh white man video noodles teh blues
Hate jam bands
Sounds okay but I’m not a jam band person. A 20 minute song is too much.
Always hear about how these guys are important and great. I've never been able to get into them - this album included. Overindulgent? I guess it's seemed like that b/c it's a live album, but I'm sitting in my office, not an arena....
All set with any live album. Ugh.
If I was really into Jam bands or really long songs this would be a great album but unfortunately I’m not really. It was fine but kind of just noise to me
I love my blues rock as much as the next guy, but I think my will to live vanished when I saw the last track clocked into at over 20 minutes. I know this is an iconic band, but I was frankly bored listening to this.
Mwah
The rock n roll equivalent of ambient music. That being said they’re good players at the very least.
A lot of the jamming feels aimless on this to me. It reminds me of Santana, but for some reason I can’t enjoy it as much. Exceptional musicianship, but no content control, or song writing prowess. It’s like Blues if you stripped out all the pain. A band with nothing to say
Barely into live albums for my favorite bands, let alone this one
I honestly thought I’d enjoy this, given other Allman Brothers tracks with a sunny southern twang. This is just boring electric barroom blues. Fine in its own right, but nothing I would choose to listen to.
5.5/10 underused vocals, guitarist was good, woulda gotten a much higher rating if their songs ended a lot earlier, the instrumentals at the end weren’t really too enjoyable 1. Statesboro Blues, good song, good pacing, used vocals well 2. Whipping Post, coulda been number one if it wasn’t 23 minutes long, the first 5 ish minutes were good though 3. Stormy Monday, chill song, blues, lowkey background music
The songs sound good but way too damn long in my opinion 1) Whipping Post 2) Statesboro Blues 3) You Don’t Love Me
The kind of shit you hear at the barbecue place where the floors are clean so you know you can't really trust it but it's still kind of good even though it's not the same. Hey, that's a pretty good metaphor for this album. Sounds pretty good for a live album, but boy does it take its time getting...anywhere. I know I'm getting to the age where I should prefer a seat at a concert, but I can't imagine standing up for this one. I don't think I ever have to listen to this one again, just a shitload of guitar noodling.
Dullest blues I ever did hear
It’s well executed, but achieves Clapton levels of blandness. And because it’s a live album it gives you the feel of listening in on someone’s boomer dad jamming with his fellow retired accountants in the garage after they pushed the golf kit and Harley out. Yawn.
The allman brothers Lol what ein name.
brothers & sisters it's blues o'clock, aber brothers & sisters it's also 2 star o'clock packed d'schnuuregiige wieder ih und sattelt die pferde, mir gönd wieder hei
As crucial as this album may be to American Music, being the last Allman Brothers album with Duane Allman, I can't. It's six hours of jazz rock. They're talented, sure, but... sorry. 5/5 for talent 1/5 because it's jazzy rock noodling. overall: 2/5.
Made me switch over to Bobby Bland.
I can’t stand this jammy crap. Some parts were fine but I need to give out more 2s.
It was fine, but nothing particularly stood out! It was quite nice background music. I listened to a couple of their most played songs from other records, Midnight Rider and Ramblin' Man, as I wondered if I'd recognise them...but I didn't!
Fun jam session listen , probably nothing I go back to much and it didn’t blow me out of water but didn’t mind having it on
this album was an hour longer than it needed to be
Very very masturbatory
80 minute jam sesh
truly not my vibe
Oh god another jam band live album. It's only good if it's a show you actually went to. 2/5
Made it three songs. Spare me southern rock - a jug band with electricity. No más!
Okay
This may well be "one of the best live rock albums in history", since I don't like any other live rock albums, either, but I sure don't like this one, too. Very southern guitary rock. I have heard of the Allman Brothers (Band?) before, so I know they're popular, but I have never heard their music before and I am now mentally sorting it along with ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, and other Zzz-inducing artists. Relative Highlight: 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed'
Guitar solos over mediocre melodies are nice for the first thirty seconds or so but an hour of them kind of gets boring.
Forgettable blues (though the last - 20-minute! - song is actually quite good, or at least the first - 16ish minutes - part of it).
Blusey. I like stormy monday. Jk rest of ur sucks. 10 minute guitar solos
I've got the opposite problem to some. I wish this was more 'self indulgent' and they did more of the jazzy noodly stuff. When they play that bog standard blues rock stuff I have the same feeling I always do. I'm sat there thinking to myself wondering why aren't I just listening to Howlin' Wolf rather than this tribute act.
i’m quaking in my boots because why does 7 songs last ONE HOUR AND EIGHTEEN MINUTES - my goldfish attention span simply cannot handle this insanity. right off the bat the guitar intro is really great and i love a boop doop bassline always. very bluesy. i forgot i was listening to it and snapped into an alternate cowboy timeline when i finally came back into consciousness. technically good but i am too sleepy to appreciate this.
😴 can songs be less than 20 minutes please?
I felt like the "Get on with it" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Pretty excellent live recording. Not really my favorite sub genre but worth a spin every now and then. Funny to think about this thing kicking around in my car on a homemade cassette tape back in the day. Kind of a staple of the hippie-ish set, since Phish hadn't really come on the scene yet.
Interesting and trippy in some areas. Dull and bland in most others.
Yeah... well... I'm not much of a jam band kind of person. Especially the kind with a jazzy organ. That 23 minute jam to end the album is 23 minutes I will never get back.
Listened: 06/03/2025 Album no: 31 % rating: 42% Fave song: Listened to a few tracks but not for me. Also low key this list should be studio albums only imho.
Not bad as far as live albums go but runs long, just seven tracks took up four whole vinyl sides upon release. I enjoyed it as background jam but wow they do mean extended play. Solidifies The Allman Brothers Band as a true jam band living up to the performing arts. How many dudes are in this band anyway? 2.25.
This all-man (1 brotha) band is a great bluesy jammer. Songs certainly run long but throw this on any time for background and you won't hate it. Again, it's a live one so I have some list qualms but it is one of the better thus far. The band members all must have blisters the size of boulders on their fingers. 2.1 stars.
Wasn't expecting much from another long live album. Was actually pretty pleased with what I got. 20-minute songs aren't the norm but I'm usually on board to give them a listen. You get to hear some of the inter-band interaction and how personnel play off of each other. There are plenty of much worse examples of this than what we got on this Allman Brothers album. While there are some sections that are just noodling around there are also some pretty tight segments mixed into the jams that I enjoyed. Long jams aren't everybody's cup of tea but I've always kinda enjoyed them. 2.49 stars
God it really just KEPT GOING As a 1971 live recording it's great. As something I would choose to listen to it very much is not. I could have been listening to Tate McRae
Pretty ok
looooooooonnngggggggggg boring
I just find this kind of music so boring. Who listens to it? Old people smoking weed I guess.
does not spark interest in me
Ehh on live albums
Too long, it just sounds like the blues scale up and down over and over again.
Great jams.
The first half or so I was enjoying. I'm not a massive fan of live album, but you couldn't really tell it was one so it didn't make much of a difference. It just dragged on and on and on. Cut it down by at least 20 minutes and it's a miles better album
Boring. I felt absolutely nothing listening to this.
Not for me
Not discounting the opinion of those that absolutely love the genre of music, I've never been a fan of jam-bands and jam-based music, and this album is no different. I listened through to the end, but found it was still uninteresting and a bit self-indulgent (23+ minutes of Whipping Boy?).
It's fine to have on in the background. Nothing super exciting but not bad.
90% of this album are guitar solos, if you're into that maybe you'll enjoy it, but I found it uninteresting.
Oh sweet Jesus another band that insists on making an album that is 70 plus minutes long. AHHHHHH. Well. It’s live, so I guess you can’t rip off the good fans of Fillmore East. I was more excited for the Cashew boys, but I guess the Allman brothers will do. Tie me to the whipping post. Soft. I need harshness from that tone. If you’re going to do this kind of blues, give some SNARL. This is a grimace at best. And not the best mascot in fast food history. Vocals are pretty good, but again, lacking something. We have an old new song that is an old song that is a new song we’d like to play for all you old people that are new to us here at this old building that is again, new to us as we are new versions of our old selves in this new day much like the old days. Anyway. It’s fine. This would be way better to absolutely blitzed and be there. Man. I mean. It’s a fairly smooth blues jam. Pleasant. Decent. I want more vitriol, but I guess that’s not coming. I’ll take this as a nice listen. 7 minutes into this song and I am as silent as the crowd. It’s just sort of meh. The beginning of the true guitar solo at that point is kinda fun. I know he’s praying for a more aggressive tone too. This was a long time ago. There’s also the odd mid 90’s jangle riff thrown in at one point. That’s was fun. While Lanta may be hot, this “song” is not. A real long jam song. It’s fine but it’s not gripping me. I love the singing in this one, finally feels alive vocally. Fully warmed up. Those vocal refrains are electric. Hell yeah brother. Let’s wind the evening down. Too slow for a concert. So quiet. It went forever. Was this while people were filing out? I get it boys. You’re very good at your instruments and you love to play them. I’ve tried playing guitar. It’s impossible. Anybody who can coordinate their hands in that fashion is a genetic marvel. I don’t mean tried once. I played for years and years and it’s still iron man played at quarter speed with 3-4 mistakes. With all that uh admitted. This album is too much. It’s wanking on stage and it’s too much. This wounds like it was written to impress one another while in the throes of a heroin coma. There were amazing, soaring moments, but there were also minutes and minutes and minutes where it sounded like I was listening to the roadie tune instruments and play the licks he’s been practicing. This was fine and electrifying at times, but nothing beyond the middle. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Stormy Monday, Whipping Post
Still a blues album worth listening to after more than 50 years.
The Guitar Solo That Wouldn't End
Definitely for me. Not my genre. Pretty boring.
Good songs but too much unaccompanied guitar wankery
I guess this is a little too dirty 70's for me. I love many songs by this group, so was hoping to hear a little more polish and less fuzz
Eh. I dislike live albums. The band is ok, though.
Eh, a lot of jamming… rock-ish
help! i’m being held hostage by a jam band!
Alright
2.5/5 Muy Repetitivo
Do not really know the Allman Brothers and am not really a fan of Southern Rock and am also not really a fan of Live albums. Despite this I did enjoy parts of the album when they got their groove on. In places it was a little noodly and I guess you had to be there. Not sure its the best live album ever but hey ho.
Enjoyable but I felt like I had to really, really lean in and engage to pull anything out of it - I kept losing concentration.
Boring
70's Rock.
It was waaaaayyy tooooo loooooong
There are some decent jams on the last two tracks, but the generic blues melodies kills it for me.
It gets better in the end, but I would've asked for a refund if I went to that show.
The track "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" was really nice, but that's the only thing I liked about the whole album. Generic and annoying blues rock jams all the way through.
2/5 Not bad, but this just sounds like music of a bygone era. I bet all the musicians were massive smokers and drinkers. I wonder what they were like as people and what type of jokes they made.
Love live music, HATE live albums.
I know they were a famous jam band, but I don’t want to sit through over an hour of it. I did the math, and the average song length on the album is around 11 minutes. That’s not always bad, but here, it’s just boring.
Self indulgent guitar nonsense
not really to my taste at all even after trying to listen in full, so hard to rate. favs: none
Just so boring
Fun fact, I walked out of an Allman brothers concert when I was younger. Can take only so many guitar solos.
A bit too instrumental
Why u live album
Otros discos del 71: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV, Marvin Gaye - What's Going On? David Bowie - Hunky Dory, The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, The Who - Who's Next, Don Mclean- American Pie, John Lennon – Imagine, T. Rex - Electric Warrior, Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On, The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East, Nick Drake - Bryter Layter, Can - Tago Mago, Black Sabbath - Master of Reality, Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story, Carole King - Tapestry, Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate, Paul and Linda McCartney - Ram, Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head, Faces - A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse, The Doors - L.A. Woman, The Beach Boys - Surf's Up RORY GALLAGHER - Deuce, NINA SIMONE - Here comes the sun, IKE & TINA TURNER - Workin' together, BADFINGER - Straight up ,Jethro Tull - Aqualung, Janis Joplin - Pearl, David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name, Pete Dello and Friends - Into your ears, Santana - Santana III Gene Clark - Gene Clark/White Light, Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey Joni Mitchell- Blue, Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson, Elton John - Madman Across the Water, Al Green-Al Green Gets Next to You, Kevin Ayers – Whatevershebringswesing, Sixto Rodriguez - Coming From Reality...
# Playlist track - Statesboro Blues # Notes - It is not a *bad* album, but it loses itself way too many times and for way too long. - At some point between the never ending solos you're just tired of listening to pretty much the same thing over and over. - Go somewhere else if you want to listen to Allman Brothers.
No thanks. This is just 80minutes of guitar wank. Really, really did not get into this.
I appreciate the musical talent but I am not a jam band fan. 18-22 minute songs, mostly instrumental? No thanks, just not for me!
Some good riffs and moments but the solos were far too long and boring and since there’s so many it ruined the experience.
They clearly are all talented musicians but zzzzzzzzz
I usually hate live albums, but this one's not bad. Not sure if it's the genre, but it just adds character. I feel like I should be walking downtown or through a park 😁 This long form instrumental music tends to lose the attention of my fast-paced, ever-growing state of mind pretty quickly however. I think I want a chance to learn it be inspired through my music, and slowly evolving ambient stuff doesn't quite fit that bill
Oh great, another boring live album.
They got skills but mostly, I felt nothing and will remember nothing (exception: In Memory of Elizabeth Reed).
I feel like jam bands are best appreciated live, rather than on record. I enjoy the Allman brothers, but some of these versions of their songs just go on forever. Because of that, I give it 2/5.
I've been to an Allman Brothers show and I can confirm it's one neverending jam. Cool if you're on mushrooms (which everyone was), bad if you just want to hear some of their songs (which I did)
Bluesy but feel like a jam that didn't really go anywhere. High 2.
Inoffensive but just not very interesting
I couldn’t cope
Astonishing playing but a bit indulgent for my tastes. Fretboard wankery extraordinaire.
About as middle of the road as you can get.
The whole “endless Southern rock noodling” thing doesn’t really do it for me. Isn’t this just prog rock at a certain point?
Bruh, it just goes on forever.
Impressive musicians and I really enjoyed some of the more relaxing parts of the longer songs, but that's not the main sound of this album.
I always found this album to be the definition of ponderous. I prefer their pop efforts with a touch of pondering; y'know, like Eat a Peach or their first album.
Passed me by quite unnoticed actually. Not sure it's bad per-se, but quite uninteresting. Usually these end up somewhere with a '3', but this felt particularly forgettable, so giving it a strong 2.
Goes on a bit. High fretted solos. Nah.
I didn't realize the Allman bros were so jammy! I didn't love this album, but I certainly loved the story on how it came to be.
Too much electric guitar for.me
Nothing I haven’t heard before, unlikely to listen again.
Not a big fan of 70s blues rock
Couldn't get through this one. I'm really not into this sort of jammy, bluesy rock, and I think I would struggle to recommend it to anyone, not because it's bad, but I don't really know how or what to appreciate about this genre.
Nothing special, but it's well recorded and the singer has a good voice. Just too generic
Not criminally boring but definitely in a grey area
Over an hour's worth of blues noodling.
cansativo.
I didn't enjoy this live.
Not sure this is the genre for me 1h20 of jam session over the same 3 chord progressions Nice vibe I guess Actually second half was better
The live albums on this list continue to baffle me. Why is this here? Is it truly one of the essential live albums of all time? I like The Allman Brothers. But I prefer their focus on a studio album. This is far too meandering for me personally to latch onto. It’s fine. 2.5/5
OK, so there’s no denying that the Allman Brothers are a talented band, but I’ve never really gotten into them. I never really paid much attention to them, but I remember about 20 years ago, when I was in my late teens and early 20s, working in a kitchen where some of my coworkers would play this band, and it used to drive me crazy. So even though I’ve heard them before, this is my first time actually sitting down and listening to an album from start to finish and paying attention all the way through. I have to say, I don’t feel much different about them now than I did back then. This album is definitely a great mix of Southern rock, blues, and jam band elements, but it’s that jam band aspect that really takes away the enjoyment for me. I’ve never gotten into jam band music, and I just don’t think I ever will. If I had to pick one element I liked the most, it would probably be the Hammond organ.
Good that you're good at guitar, but that's enough, man.
Standard blues rock.. which I like... but I don't love this
reads like early rock and roll or jam band. Not bad, especially bc its wordless, but is a little too like cowboy music to catch me humming along to it.
the mehest meh to ever meh, fine as background music but not much else. interesting sounds and they def sound good but there's no way I'll relisten. 2/5
It started off well but was really self-indulgent by the guitarist and then boring by the end.
I actually really like this band and almost all of the tracks on this song but i fucking HATE LIVE ALBUMS!!! I WANT TO LISTEN TO A TAILORMADE FINELY CRAFTED AUDITORY EXPERIENCE!!!
This is some serious drinking music. Privileged white man blues. Yes, they could play. But at what cost? 2/5
In the time it takes for him to say You Don't Love Me Anymore, she's moved out, met someone else, married, and had a kid.
This is the band Andy & Daryl started with Robert California.
The album might be live but the quality is really good and crowd don’t intervene too much. Definitely American country rock vibe, much slower, blues type songs 2/3***
Boomer blues rock jam band nonsense. I don't hate this music, but it's really not my thing. I appreciate the musicianship, but overall not that enjoyable of an album for me.
Look, this is a very highly regarded album, even being held in the Library of Congress for its historical significance, but in all honesty, I don’t get much out of it. This is more so about me than it is the pure quality of the music, as I think these guys are all fantastic musicians, I just don’t really care much for jam bands. It’s the shortest songs on here that I enjoy more than the lengthy compositions, but even so, those tracks don’t feel all that special.
Puh. Langatmig und recht nichtssagend.
So I really liked the style of this music and the instrumentals are great, but they go on way too long! I got bored by the very long instrumentals and ended up skipping to the next song as a result. I wonder if their other albums have such long instrumentals? I hope not, I reckon I could really like them with a little adjustment.
It’s not bad, but I’m not listening to 30 minutes of guitar solos. Not my cup of tea. It all sounds very boring, but not a typically unpleasant type of boring.
Excessively long jam sessions.
Mmm it’s alr, lots of instrumentals and guitar riffs and drum stuff, can’t really understand what they’re saying, not my favorite so far. It’s not bad but not my cup of tea so far
Solid classic rock band record and appreciate a fun live performance but as an album I prefer their recorded stuff.
I like the Allman Brothers, but this album didn't showcase what's best about them. And the live format didn't add anything....
Not really for me.
Bluesy nonsense.
You have to be really up your own ass to make this album. I mean 1 hour 15 of playing the same guitar riffs over and over again with almost no variation? You gotta think you’re gods gift to music or something. Yeah they’re crazy talented but crazy repetitive and boring too.
Lots and lots and lots of bluesy, jazzy noodling. I'm sure it's great for those who like that sort of thing. Performances and sound quality seem on point, to give the album its due, so I'll bump it up to 2.5 stars.
Woof! Longest album so far at 2hr 13min. What an epic! The southern blues style was nice early on, but the over indulgence in the jazzy jam in the last few tracks became a real chore to get through.
This was way too long.
jam band? idk
I didn't really know Allman Brothers band, but it sounds very American, oldtimey and the songs/jams on this live album are, frankly, too long and sometimes boring. 2 stars.
Sounds like a recording of just some random jam session. It's okay I guess, but not really worth mentioning.
Getting a bit tired if this genre tho
Probably great as a live act 50 years ago. Not so fresh these days
Jammy snooze
Solid blues music performed well, but no guitar-driven song should be 19 minutes long, even if it is at a concert. Self-indulgent
As I’ve mentioned in other reviews, I’m appreciative of but not a fan of Southern rock. This had more of a bluesy slant to it, but the songs just kept going on. And on. And on… Jam bands can be fun when you’re actually AT the concert (and probably a little altered by substances), but definitely not so much for a casual, at-home listen.
I love jam bands and long live improvisation. I love jazz, blues, rock fusion. I don’t love this for some reason. I felt like the blues tunes I’d rather hear from the actual blues masters. The jamming didn’t feel like it was centered around anything meaningful. I can imagine the concerts were a lot of fun but this album just did not keep my interest.
Allman Bros and Grateful Dead always seemed pretty similar to me, despite their slightly different genres/backgrounds in blues vs. psychedelic folk. Both are known for their extensive live sets that include jam songs that seem to go on endlessly. And both have released new material on live albums the way most bands only do on studio albums. At Fillmore East is not my favorite Allman Bros album, in fact I don’t like it much. And I do actually love a few of their studio albums like Eat a Peach or Brothers or Sisters. Fillmore East just seems to go on way too long. It was released as a double album, with sides B and D consisting of one 20-ish minute song each. Side D’s “Whipping Post” is an Allman Bros classic, and the studio version on the band’s self-titled debut is solid. This is a good live recording, and although it meanders around a little too long and a little too timidly for a while, it’s still a fun recording to listen to. But side B’s “You Don’t Love Me” is a mess: it starts to get stale under 3 minutes in and just continues to meander around to the point where the band members don’t even seem concerned with how they sound, they’re just content to play a lame beat and strum mildly for about 15 minutes. This should not have been included on the album. “Statesboro Blues” and the instrumental “Hot ‘Lanta” are both solid but the rest of the tracks are only about as good as the first couple minutes of “You Don’t Love Me”: mediocre at best. I wish I enjoyed this album better, because I DO like the Allman Brothers Band; they have some great studio albums and they generally sound fantastic live: I’ve heard some great live tracks of theirs, for example the 16-minute “Jessica” from Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas. It confuses me that At Fillmore East is typically considered their highest-regarded album when it leaves much to be desired for me. Also… what’s with the lack of drum solos? There are 2 drummers in the band: Jaimoe and Butch Trucks and they’re both awesome, but really don’t get their time to shine here.
Idealmente sarebbe 2,5
The greatest jam band ever is still a jam band. The musicianship is absolutely incredible. But how people find such self-indulgence entertaining is beyond me. And is there anything more tedious and less moving than post-WWII 12-bar blues? Midnight Rider is the only song on here I care to listen to and this may very well be the worst performance of Midnight Rider ever to appear on a major label release. One star for each drummer, and you can keep the rest.
It's not a bad album. Maybe I have listened to them too much but I didn't really find it very memorable or hear any songs that really stood out to me.
At what point in the 23-minute version of the song “Whipping Post” is the song no longer “Whipping Post.” I would have been pissed if I had been at this concert.
For better or worse, this is one of the most American albums I’ve heard. Honkeytonk and blues as far as the eye can see. But this shouldn’t be on here. I don’t care that ABB is tight in a live setting. It just isn’t pertinent enough to be anywhere near this list - we as millennials/genz must overthrow the makers of it. You wanna actually learn something from ABB? Whatever you do, don’t ride your motorcycle in Macon, Georgia. There. That’s more interesting than the umpteenth classic rock live album on here
Washed over me with little impact
Expected to enjoy this more than I did. It was much more standard blues rock with some jam parts. However, the lead guitar I found really irritating, partly how it was recorded in the mix (overbearing) and I guess I just didn’t get on with the style. Oh well.
This was not a fun listen for me. Bluesy rock is never my favorite, and live jamming of blues rock even less so. Took me forever to even finish listening to the album bc I just didn't want to hear more of it. I'm sure the musicianship is good and for that I'm rounding my 1.5 up to a 2.
astoundingly inoffensive for a live album. doesn't go too overboard with jam banding. produced and mixed well. no excessive faffing about between songs.
i have no feelings about this. the album looped and i didn't notice. 2.5
I thought I was done with this album at least four times but actually I'd paused it for a break and forgotten about it.
Yeah, I'm just not a big fan of live albums. I do enjoy listening to music live, but I don't want the same experience when listening to a recording. I do like the vibes of the band/music/album, the slightly jazzy rock. Yeah, this would be awesome to listen to live, but I really am uninterested in this kind of album layout for a recording.
Blues jazz rock. Rollo. Todo el rato igual.
There is no denying this is a group of super talented musicians, and there wasn't anything egregiously bad about any of the songs, but listening to a 18 minute live jam of a song I don’t know is hella fucking boring. Maybe not the best intro to the band, I might have had a more positive experience if I knew some of the tracks ahead of time.
Just not a fan of jamming out for 17 minutes
I like the Allman Brothers. I really do. And I like the bluesy rock they make. But I do NOT need to listen to 15-20 minute guitar solos, which is hard for me to say because I love guitar. But the jams were just a bit too excessively long. I really do think I would have given this a 4 or 5 if the songs were a lot shorter, but I gotta cut the rating solely due to the obscene length.
Don’t know much about the Allman Brothers or this album. Another one which a bit of a mystery as to why it has appeared on this list. It’s just a run of the mill live album. The musical content is nothing notable. Having said that I do enjoy extended bluesy guitar solos and there’s enough of them on here to choke a donkey. But I return to my original point that there are hundreds of albums not on this list I’d rather listen to. 2/5 11/4/24
This is some serious drinking music. Privileged white man blues. Yes, they could play. But at what cost?
Jam bands are fun live while drinking and chatting, I don't care much for leisure album listening
Third live album this week, someone's taking the right royal piss
This is a lot more bluesy than I expected, but still just not a sound that like at all.
Like the music, but not so much of the guitar solos
not for me really I cant lie its not bad it just doesn't sit with me too well some of these tracks are WAY too long tho I'd give it maybe a 2.4/5
Not my type of music.
Heard before
I could tolerate an hour and twenty minutes of a jam band if the jam was good. This is not good however. I saw that the 2014 (or 15 or whatever) rerelease of this bum is 6 hours long. Anyone who'd willingly listen to this for 6 hours needs their hard drive checked ASAP.
I wouldn't even call this bad, but like... What was the point? Especially for 78 minutes...
must've been cool to be there, i guess. also cool how good it sounds for long ago it was, and that this was all live. not really something i could get into on a weekday while working though.
I find this sort of music so boring but it gets the obligatory 2 stars because it's not worthless or horrendously bad, plenty of people love it and I try not to be too harsh on music people hold dear
This album is nothing more than an hour and a quarter long guitar solo. What is the point of it being on this list? The list is literally called albums you need to listen to *before you die*. This is one of the most pointless, empty albums I have ever heard. Boring.
It was okay, tho nothing too special
1. boro bluez - 1.5 2. done zomebody uurong - 1 3. ztormy monday - 1 4. you dont love me - 1.5 5. hot lanta - 1 6. elizabeth reed - 1 7. uuhipping pozt - 1.5
A band I've always been meaning to give more time to, they are so well loved, they must be worth a listen. Well there's things to like about this album, lovely recording, lots of live atmosphere, the guitars and vocals are excellent. That's about it though, it's a well recorded and well played load of country blues, with forgetable songs and boring extended musical work outs. Enjoyably free of Lynyrd Skynyrd's country-blues cliches, but lacking the muscular boogie and catchy tunes of early ZZ Top. You probably had to be there. Nice enough but marred by the endless noodling.
I was expecting less blues and more classic rock- like what comes after the first few songs. It’s entirely too much jamming for me. I can’t argue with their talent, but ungggh, I hate a jam band. It’s just not for me. 2.6
Best Song: Hot 'Lanta. Brief. Hits the points it needs to hit in a short enough time span (even thought it could be an easy minute shorter with nothing lost). Worst Song: Whipping Post. I was sure that this song (and the album) was done at 11 minutes in, but boy was I deceived. Overall: Music that's meant to be played in the background, preferably live, while you're in a park drinking beer. Occasionally you realize that music is still playing and you ask, "Is that still the same band?", to which the one guy that's listening to the music says, "It's actually still the same song."
I like the Allman Brothers, I really do. But I just didn’t really enjoy this album. Too long winded, even if it sounded nice.
Couldn’t dig this at all for the Bluesy bop stuff towards the beginning, came around for the jammy excursions later on, got lost again by that version of Whipping Post (a song I actually like a lot) which didn’t gel for me at all. Overall disappointing despite musicianship clearly being there. Just not a performance that comes together in an effective way for me. Top tracks: You Don’t Love Me, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
Live albums are tough when its a jam band. I know thats where they thrive musically but if youre not into it then its just an extremely long version of a song you already dont really care about
Not bad, but long. Definitely meant to be see live and not listened to on vinyl
5.5/10 Highlight: Whipping Post
Lots of jamming- if you love recorded live music, this is for you, if you do not enjoy the improv, this is not the album for you (I am not a fan).
Started strong for me, enjoyed the first couple of tracks with my general impression was this was something I might listen to a few times and earmark for the future. It then fell off a cliff for me with the extended tracks and solos which is no doubt great when live but under no circumstances would I ever listen to this again despite the early promise
When I first put this album on, I started to enjoy it and get into the vibe of what must have been an excellent concert to attend. However, as the album continued and the improvised guitar solos got longer, I started losing interest. It was like listening to a very long rehearsal, just a bunch of dudes jamming. This album has me questioning my love of guitar solos!
For a start, I’ll admit I’m not a fan of live albums. Live music in person I love - but very few live albums capture the atmosphere of the performance or the energy of the musicians. I think I would have loved this if I’d actually been there! No doubt they are talented musicians and have a whole jamming thing going on which would be incredible in person! But listening through this as a recorded album got more and more tedious the further through I was. Started out great, but I was actually quite grumpy by the end. In my last review I said I didn't like guitar solos - that's not entirely true, what I don't like is self indulgent solos. Self indulgent solos is the glue that held this album together - zero desire to revisit.
I wanted to like this more than I did. It just kept going on and on. Like I walked from the bus to my house, closed the blinds, fed the cat and put the bin out. And it was still on the same track and I kind of zoned out by then
anstrengend
In order for this to be your jam you need to like blues rock. Unfortunately for The Allman Brothers Band that is a genre I have a fraught and complicated relationship with. So I can recognize the quality of playing here and appreciate some of the tracks or parts of songs within. But overall, it's not compelling to me.
I wasn't particularly excited about going into this one. Mainly because I'm not a jam band guy OR a southern rock guy. So of course I'm not the world's biggest Allman Brothers fan. And coming out of it, I can the level of technical skill on display is obviously astonishing, but I'm not a convert. If you like jams, this one won't let you down. If you want a bit more substance in your albums, don't look for it here. I will say this, around 2:35 or so into In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, there's a transition that made me stop what I was doing. Groovy.
3/10 Rough week this, closed off with a jam blues rock album, so very much not appealing to me 2 20-minute jams were pretty difficult stuff I can hear these are good musicians, crazy that this is live, must have been a total vibe in that room But honestly I couldn’t stand it & only listened to the original 7-track version. No way I was doing 2 hours+ of that
Could never get into this and this time was no different. It’s fine. Good stuff in each son - just too much. I feel like Barbie having the guitar played at me. Quite the jam but not my jam.
my initial thought was gonna be “wow, yk its gonna be good when a band is called the ___ brothers” but then it was more jam band than i was hoping. if i am not there in person, i do not want to listen to a 10 minute instrumental jammin in my free time, personally. i like other stuff by the allman brothers, but this live album is just not for me unfortunately
so dang repetitive, it's not a pain to listen to but it's not interesting either and I wish there were more lyrics
