Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Fantastic musicianship, but for me this was a pretty boring listen. Many guitar solos that kinda droned on, which probably would've been 10x more exciting in person. This felt like more of a jam session than a live show.
This was a perfect 3 for me. I can see the quality both in the musicianship the sound recording and the form is at a very high quality. It ticked along very nicely in the background and wasn't offensive at all. But I don't really need many 11 minute blues/rock jam songs in my life so a whole album was plenty. I can imagine this is the holy grail if you play and are into this kind of music. For me it was a pleasant hour and into the next one.
Jam session. 3.4.
Started off good but felt a little long for me. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Every song was way too long for me. Didn’t need half of the songs to be over 15 minutes
Jam band
Not in the habit of listening to live albums, but will admit this sounded great. Started off well but dragged towards the end—I get that you can play the guitar great man, but I want to listen to something else at some point today.
Pretty good. It does suffer a bit from songs going a bit too long, but that's sort of the nature of live albums. The guitar work by Betts and Allman is great tho. 3.5/5
statesboro blues
I like the jam sessions, but it doesn't feel like a "must listen" album, even though I really like The Allman Brothers' sound.
This and the Grateful Dead live album back to back is too much.
This is what a jam album should sound like, though I’m still not a huge fan of the endless meandering. Thankfully everything is in time and in key, it just goes on too long. I did like the old school blues covers. “Hot ‘Lanta” is a jam, and that’s about the length of blues improv can take. I know why they play so long, having played in bands with dead heads and the like, it’s fun to just jam over 12 bar blues and most of all it’s easy to sound good while doing it. The runtime is too long for me but I bet it was fun to be insanely baked or otherwise altered and be at this show. I’d put this on while doing something else no problem.
I’m gonna shit my pants on live tv if the next album is infected with jam band crap Good otherwise
Listened to this while gardening and never went to change it once. It has a nice groove and felt better then yesterday's Grateful Dead album.
are you fucking kidding me i already listened to this bitch ass busted ass album
Another live album. This one is a blues rock jam of mostly covers that is a bit too self indulgent for my tastes. I enjoyed the tracks that were shorter, had vocals, and included organ solos. The others were bit too samey after awhile. I don't think I'll be re-visiting this album in the future and none of the tracks made into my regular rotation. I've already got plenty of blues covers in my collection already.
-Great instrumentation. - Classic blues album. -Not my favorite genre of music, but definitely solid playing. -Some nice blues melodies, very well recorded. Easy to vibe with. -Great ending, quite drawn out.
Good if you like blues
Not bad
This was some quite nice sounding music. Pretty relaxing and groovy.
Live album, always a weird choice
Ok for a live album. The jams were too long and became tedious.
More lounge jam than swamp jam but could imagine landing my Huey in a hot LZ with this blasting out.
Not a bad listen. Classic American rock and blues. Good to listen to on a summer road trip I guess. Worthy of 3 stars
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: You don’t love me, In memory of Elizabeth Reed
Excellent guitar work but I must say that everything was instantly forgettable. Obviously highly talented, but kind of a a slog to sit through a 25 minute guitar recital. 2.5
Live albums aren’t for me
I guess the blue rock sound was pioneered by these guys. The problem is I'm not a fan of blues rock, probably because so many later bands sound exactly the same as this. It sounds great for a live album, but it just doesn't keep my interest very well. The last song was my favorite because it embraces the sort of background ambient music lane that the genre seems geared toward.
13min songs are not for me
"At Fillmore East" contains some wonderful blues-rock-jams, is musically great and has got a pretty good recording quality. I rate it down because I generally question live-albums on this list knowing this is probably the only way to capture a jam session. And maybe two 20-minutes-songs are too much?!
Can't place my finger on it but I really didn't like the first 3 tracks. Really enjoyed tracks 4,5,6 & 7 It's live jamming, so just some fun energy.
Definitely Allman Brothers all the way!!
It's a blues album but nothing special.
The first half hour while I was walking the dog in the sun were great. But then the album never ended. I am still listening to it.
Great musicians. It’s just a shame the the production is very subpar. 3 stars
That is certainly a jam album. I’m usually not a huge fan of that type of music. I like the lyrics, I like the voices. Some of that was very good. Just like I love Dave Matthew’s, but at concerts, those jams can get really long. This is one great big live jam… don’t love it…but they are good.
The guitarist is great. The drums are good and I am sure this is better live then in the office while working in excel.
Solid southern rock jams
cool!
Deece
Still not the biggest fan of live albums, but this was listenable. Pure 70s through and through.
This is fine. A live album from the early 70's is bound to sound not great, but the Allmans can shred and Whipping Post is a jam.
Long jam session, cool but also annoying and boring at times... It's ok...
You know I had it in mind to be severe with this, as when I ripped it had only a single CD's worth I could find a decade ago. But I'm at work ripping through tedious admin like bank details and budgets and some mellow endless shredding is exactly what works. So a solid three stars. Sitting down and listening to it without having something else to do would however be surely banned under the Geneva Convetnion.
Honestly, I was expecting some old timey tunes I wouldnt enjoy. Instead, the beats felt fresh, upbeat, and lively! I enjoyed the Allman Brothers and will check them out further going forward!
I almost really like this but the aimless jamming just goes one for a bit too long.
It's fine!
I like the music and the musicians are great. However, live albums are not quite my thing, especially when the songs end up as 24 minute-long jams. Which might be cool if you're at the concert, but not when you're listening at home.
Still against live albums being on the list, but - dang - this one's good. Love the Allman Brothers. Wish I coulda been there.
A classic live album that showcases how good a jam band can be. The Allman's always had a welcoming sound but you feel it doubly on their love tracks
Heh tällä possulla 20 cm rasvaa.. hurja kerros heh.. Tuhtia kamaa..
The Allman Brothers Band is one of those groups that never really compelled me to want to listen to anything beyond their greatest hits if anything at all. Overall this album was OK to good but didn't change my mind about them.
Classic southern rock/jam/blues. I suppose they were an early trendsetter for the genre. It's good, but gets redundant after a while. Not sure we need a 23 minute version of one song -- and that's coming from someone who likes electronic music. Probably better to either a) be there in person, or b) leave it play in the background while doing something else. 3.5
It was a fun listen, I don't think I'm gonna come back to it soon, but it was an awesome experience. The last two tracks were my favorite.
Decent album. My favourites were the longer tracks, but at the same time I felt they were dragging on sometimes.
I do love a live album, I think they’re better when you know the songs originally. That being said a very cool album, something I might listen to again. Lots of long guitar solos but they are interesting and easy to listen too.
*loudly over the guitars to the guy next to me* Wow, this band is great! *inaudible* What? *inaudible* We’re only on song five?!
Live albums. They’re good. But this one was rough.
Eh
Sounds good, still not to much interesting for me
Though it has only seven songs, this album is almost a hour and twenty minutes long. Proto-rock and roll, following normal chord changes. Great vocals. Feels sort of dusty and absent, like a shipping crate on the shore.
Good southern rock Jam. My favorite Allman, Duane, died far to young. But this is a good blues jam.
Should be good How the ever living fuck is this on the list but eat a peach isn’t? Listened to both today, eat a peach is a master piece and I might consider giving it a five, this is also cool but for some reason I’ve always found it hard to really get into any legendary live albums, I like the refined sound of a a studio more I guess. This is good jam music, probably better than the dead, but I don’t find this stuff super weighty. It’s fucking great but I still think it’s a 3 based on the criterion I’m still developing. Sorry Duane :(
Very impressive musicianship on display here. Opens with the two worst tracks, which are mostly standard blues fare. The rest of the songs are more exciting. Definitely leaves you wanting a nice structured 3-minute song.
I'm not going to accuse this of onanism but it's 2 hours long and has a drum solo in it. The sort of album that's going to score big here.
I'm just not into screaming guitar blues jams.
Nfm
Was okay, but too much impro solos. Why a live album again?
Some veeeeeeeery long solos. I like Chicago / Driving Blues generally but still a bit self indulgent noodly album.
Fantastic!
3.5
I'm a Dead/Phish fan and generally enjoy the jamband genere, as well as psychRock and baroque pop. The Allman brothers style of blues jmimg has never resonated with me. The same droning bass line and drum beat for 8+ min as blues scales screech over top gets boring very quickly. Say what you will about the Dead, but at least thier sonic landscape changed constantly throughout a performance. And oh yeah, live albums suck
As far as live albums go, this one sounds great and features some virtuosic playing. But, the extremely long jam tracks just aren’t my thing.
It gets 3 stars for Whipping Post
Pretty sure my dad listened to this growing up. It’s good, enjoyable. The extended jam band songs aren’t really my thing, but I can appreciate how talented they are.
Powerful
i can see why people appreciate it but personally not for me
I really don't care about live albums for bands i don't already know. Still looking forward to hearing some studio recordings of these guys, but still..find it hard to get excited here
While I recognize the talent, its just not for me. I've learned I prefer more structure in music and less so jam sets like this. 3/5
I can appreciate it, but not really for me.
a little better than normal 3.5
These guys are very musically talented but a live album that is basically a very long jam session is hard to love. Still some great parts scattered through though.
Good music. Not a fan of jam bands or live albums though but still enjoyed it
The songs are good and the musicians are clearly excellent, but live albums are not my thing
Classic Southern Rock Album with Super Long Tracks and jam sessions
There’s no denying The Allman Brothers Band’s vast breadth and depth of musicianship, but I’m more or less immune to the charms of blues-based Southern rock bands.
Track 1: fun song to listen to while cooking. Track 2: kinda made me think of the hokie pokie rhythm. Track 3: fun little jam sesh Track 4: very long jam sesh pretty good Track 5: pretty fun song but it’s more of back ground stuff for me. Track 6: I like the vibe it’s going for Track 7: very much another jam song. Overall 5.6/10. It’s a good jam session, but it gets too long to the point where it’s kinda droning. Not my favorite thing but I can put on the background of stuff.
blues rock, rock blues.... never been a favorite, but they are good
If you like some guitar solos, some of them very long, then this album is for you. I like some guitar riffs form time to time. It's a pleasure to listen if the guy playing really knows what he is doing.
Okay but probably wouldn’t listen to this album again
Good, but looong riffs for someone listening in earnest for the first time. Weird attitude about “young women” too 😬
Some songs dragged on but overall, I enjoyed the album, but I don't think I'm going to listen to this again anytime soon.
Southern blues rock. Solid musicianship, decent recording.
Grand. Very Bluesy.
Better than what we’ve had lately, but I can only hear so many 5+ minute solos before it gets repetitive. Add in the production quality of a live album and this just doesn’t quite make the cut as a great record for me. High 3.
I love rock. I love guitars and this band has two of them on lead. I love drums and this band has two of them. And yet I've never been a fan of the Allman Brothers and I don't love this album. I don't hate it either, but it didn't captivate me. Maybe it's a problem of listening to a recording of something live, rather than being there live myself. But I don't feel the energy of the crowd. They can jam, which is admirable because it means they can just go off and yet follow each other and make it sound cohesive. But at some level it's just a bunch of songs that go on too long. I'd say at best a 3.5 and I just can't round up.
Another one ITunes didn’t have. So I went and listened to Idlewild South, which should encompass much of the live show. Nice little album. Some range.
3.0 For me, this is a case of too much of a good thing. The songs and jams have way more depth than a standard 12 bar blues and there are some pretty jazzy bass drum and keyboard parts. But the extended guitar wanking was a bit much. My opinion might change after I get through whipping post in a day or two.
obviously excellent musicians but the extended guitar solos can get a little repetitive after awhile. You lose track of what song you were actually listening too.
Bonne découverte ! 2,5
At Fillmore East Am familiar with it and aware it’s supposed to be one of the best live albums ever. I do like the Allman Brothers and southern rock in general, and they do sound fantastic, but there is A LOT of noodling. Hot Lanta and Whipping post are great. However apart from Get your Ya Yas Out and Live at Leeds I’m not a big fan of live albums, I’d rather listen to the recorded versions of songs or watch a video of a live performance, and on balance I think I’d rather listen to their first two albums or Eat a Peach ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s a great jam for a train ride, but this was ment to be enjoyed live I think.
Good but you could have taken off HALF of this project and gotten the same result.
Quite chill, we liked it. Would listen again.
It’s long, it’s jammy, it’s blues. Can’t ask for too much more than that. Some great playing and a good recording. Problem with live albums is they just make me wish I was there.
Jams, jams, jams. This all sounds the same. I can imagine being pretty drunk at this show and having a more interesting conversation at the bar.
Another band I understand is good but doesn’t do anything for me.
The guitar that keeps on going
Statesboro blues - 3 Done somebody wrong - 3 Stormy Monday - 3 You don't love me - 2 Hot 'lanta - 3 In memory of Elizabeth - 4 Whipping post - 3 3 - all around flood album to listen to

Enjoyable, if not very original. But I do like this sound. Reminds me of a lovely pub I used to live near that played bluesy rock music and had a big fire and nice beers. Obviously ridiculously talented and very tight. However I can only imagine myself listening to this when I want some background music. 3.5
Some of this was absolutely class, there was a couple of times it was 5 worthy. Most of the tracks were just too long though and I think the live recording detracted from the tunes. Would like to listen to more allman brothers, if there is an album that is a bit tighter and a proper recording I think id be a fan.
Agree with Jamie, some of this is great, but then a lot of it is just then jamming. Can't have 23 minute songs like that on an album. Look forward to hearing one of their studio albums on the list The opening track, "statesboro blues" was the best
This is quite a fun bit of noodling, but a whole 80 minutes of it is a bit much for me. It's a good example of what it is, but it really does feel like a jam session rather than an album. Could've done with a fair bit of tightening up, works well as background music, but not much more. Probably would've been great fun to have actually been there and see them record it, but this just drags. A middling 3/5.
Great blues live album.
I chose the deluxe edition of this album and it has a 33 minute long song on it. Would've been 4 stars because it was quite nice but I am deducting a star for THIRTY THREE MINUTES (which isn't actually on the regular album so maybe it doesn't deserve it)
Murica
By the end, i was a fan
Haven't heard jam music this enjoyable in a while. It's still jam music tho. Great playing and the short songs are enjoyable, the closer also is a good 20 minutes of time. Overall I liked. 3.5 stars
Lot of talent on that stage. Not a big fan of live albums and all that organ got me thinking of “What up with That?.”
Another live album lol. Good musicianship, blues folk rock. Decent. Won't come back to it though
A little bit of rock, blues and jazz, this was a solid album. It probably deserves a higher rating, but sometimes you need to experience something live to really appreciate it, that was the case here, I would have preferred the radio edits I think. Favorite track was done somebody wrong.
Langdradig, en niet echt een toevoeging
Album was pretty good, could have gone without 23 minute songs
So I’m not enjoying this. I find blues frustrating and i just want to yell ‘get over yourself’. But there’s some impressive guitar solos and I can see how this would have been influential. But i just want this to be over. Everything is so drawn out. What I wonder is if I’d feel this way on another day. Today this is just irksome.
Blues isn't my style, but it has good songs if you like the genre
I imagine this is as good these live blues albums are going to get.
Statesboro Blues is a fun blues opener. Really enjoying this one, 3*. Was thinking of giving it a 4*, but it really rambled unnecessarily in the back half. Not much more to say other than I'm learning I really like blues. For a live, jam session kind of album, this one was ok. Also like You Don't Love Me.
Good album, seems like they had fun live but nothing special for me.
A bit meandering and all over the place. But the playing is solid and the recording is top notch for a live album. It isn't perfect but it's far superior to anything the Grateful Dead produced.
Didn't really do anything for me, just a live album
When I was in high school, my neighbor was in a (literal) garage band that liked to practice at 8am on Saturday mornings. They played exactly one song — Midnight Rider by The Allman Brothers Band. The neighbor that moved in after was a DJ at the local rock/metal station. I don’t recall if that station played The Allman Brothers Band, but I digress. At Fillmore East is just an extended jam session. Needs more Midnight Rider.

they were cooking here. but maybe a little too much
I would like to know why this specific live concert was chosen but even without context, their classics are timeless. 6.5/10
Well rounded blues album with some jazz sprinkled in. 3.5
Since this is a live album there's the inevitable noodling that was ok in some songs and interminable in others. I didn't mind it on the whole. I do quite like In memory of Elizabeth Reed.
Favoritos: Stormy Monday, Hot 'Lanta (directo a mi playlist de instrumentales), Whipping post
Not bad. Not great. Pretty meh. Live albums are weird. 3 out of 5.
I thought i was enjoying this, with the mix of genres and skilled jamming. Then I tried actually listening to it, and then i became pretty boring and self indulgent.
I listened to this on a record player with an original pressing a few weeks ago, but I skipped around a bunch. This time it’s boomer rock, but with a twist! The boys can play and sing, together, all at once, in a live environment. I am also a sucker for the jam, I didnt realize that's what the Allman brothers were known for as I'm only familiar with their studio recordings. When a musician isa able vibes with others, it’s a beautiful thing - this one actually belongs on the list, but it does suffer from being a bit redundant. My kid fell asleep while listening to this album in the car so I can't fault it for being derivative. Review of reviews: It's not as good as people make it out to be, but it isn't bad either. Best Track: Stormy Monday
Solid
ok, long songs
11/6/23. Live albums are weird for me because I wish I could watch. Really good jams and instrument play, now I know where the TTB sound comes from.
I liked the live recording. Album was enjoyable bluesey rock.
I don't see what this brings to the party that sounds unique or noteworthy at all. Not an unpleasant listen but 🤷♂️
The songs had a lot of solo guitar parts which were great, and honestly the instrumentals were the best part. But the vocals weren’t doing it for me
Live album, 2 hours for only 13 songs…already not the best first impression. I’m sure being at the show was great but I prefer studio albums
TOO LONG. It’s a 2.5.
I appreciate the Allman brothers but not as much this album. Although it should maybe be opposite, I tend to stay away from jam-prone bands live albums.
Almost made four but the back half got too Jammy. Can totally see the roots of southern rock though.
I waffled between a 3 and a 4 on this. So, 3.5. But went 3 just based on my likelihood (or not) to revisit the album. Almost made me overcome my distrust of long, jam-y music.
First few track are great blues rock. Black Keys definitely owe a debt to...somebody. But the instrumental tracks and extended jams are just not my thing.
Pretty cool if you want to listen to a 20 minute guitar solo. I don't. 2.71
This album felt like one big jam session which was dope! I did find myself missing the vocals throughout the songs. It’s definitely an album Id put on in the background while I did some work. This one gets a 3 from me baby!
Not bad! I defiantly found myself jamming to a few of these. It’s also more blues than I expected from Allman Brothers Band. Something I could listen to while smoking a brisket but not something I could listen to all the time.
Initial thoughts: I felt dumb because I looked for the studio version to find out that one doesn't exist. Final thoughts: Ooo baby, some good ol' southern rock n blues. Tbh reminds me of live music I'd hear at some bbq restaurant in middle of texas hill country that i drove an hour to get to. You know the place, you can almost smell the hay and mesquite. You can definitely tell this was an infuential band for future artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not a bad vibe for sure. Seeing that this is from the 70's I can see that this is right in the beginning of the evolution of rock. The blues is a huge giveaway, and I'd have to say I really liked their blues sound more than their rock sound. And look, I understand this was live, in the 70's, and "feelin the blues", but holy shit man. Jamming for ~20 minutes for two songs is... Definitely feeling the blues LOL Didn't add anything to my library, but I can see myself revisiting this album later. Maybe skipping the 20 minutes songs, but this was definitely a fun one to listen to.
I enjoyed listening whilst studying, the long guitar solos were fun to listen to, especially the cheeky motifs
More noodling than a ramen shop, but damn that 22 minute version of Whipping Post goes hard. 🍜🍜🍜
Not a fan of jam bands and live music like that. Though I like their lyrics. Worth a shot.
I don't usually enjoy live albums but it was good
Statesboro Blues: The guitar throughout this song was wonderful and the overall blues/rock vibe was wonderful. 4/5 Done Somebody Wrong reminded me more of the 50s rock and swing and style it had, yet was encapsulated into the 70s with the use of the guitar, a common theme. 3/5 Stormy Monday was a much more laid back song, reminding me of a cold day right after it rains. The guitar kept the song alive, however it did last awhile. 3/5 You Don’t Love me is a 19 minute guitar solo with intermittent pieces of singing. It begins fast paced, then slows down during the middle, before slightly picking up toward the end. Felt long but occasionally refreshing. 3/5 Hot ‘Lanta has no lyrics. This is fine, the movement of the song felt upbeat and fast, but was semi repetitive until the middle portion of the song. The ending was slow. 2.5/5 In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed felt a lot like a few other of the songs. I’m realizing they reuse a lot of sounds and feels in this album and by the end, the constant guitar can get slightly repetitive. However, stand-alone this is a better song than a few on this track. 3/5 Whipping post is 23 minutes long. That’s all there is to say.
I think you would’ve had to have been there. I’m not really sure how I feel about The Allman Brothers Band as a whole, but a live record that feels like a jam session isn’t really up my alley.
Blues Rock, gefällt durchaus
Blues rock live jam session. Not for me
Great for its time im sure, but blues has become a tiring subgenre for me. The jazz elements are quite good and overall the album was enjoyable and well performed. If youre into these elemts then youl really enjoy the album… but its not my personal genre preference
didn't really have any opinions its alright
I was expecting studio albums, but it was a nice surprise to learn live albums are included on the list. This is a good one.
Ehhh
always considered allman brothers southern rock, but this live album is a combination of southern rock, blues, and jam band. it was pretty good.
I'm not normally a fan of live albums from over 50 years ago. However this one is overall pretty clean quality wise. Very heavy rock blues type album. A little repetitive in their sound and 2 of the songs are just an hour long jam session. But overall not bad. It's not life changing music but it's definitely not bad music.
Endless guitar solos get pretty old but this worked pretty well as background music while working.
Just a ton of jamming
Good album love the blues. My interest fell off in the middle though.
Was good but felt a bit pointless. I'm also not a massive fan of live albums
This isn't a bad album, but again it runs into the issue of being unable to recognise where the track ends and embellishments begin.
I like the Allman Brothers just fine, but 22+ minutes of "Whipping Post" is a bit absurd. This is definitely one of those albums I'd never listen to, but would have enjoyed if I'd been there.
Didn’t have enough time to listen but I feel like it’s a 3
Love the alliance brothers but generally not a fan of live albums
Pleasant jazzy blues rock doesn’t blow minds
I mean, it's the Allman Brothers. Tightest live group ever. I guess I'm just not discovering anything new? Whipping Post seems overlong. I feel like I'm being too harsh, maybe it's one of those "they've been copied and remixed to death so the original has lost some shine".
Not sure why it's on the list, but I listened to it and it was alright.
So so
lively but long
Longest album I've had so far, but good blues/country, though it isn't really my thing. The instrumental tracks and second half of the album were better. It's kinda jam-y background music. BT - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Whipping Post
Jam album, 20 minute songs, but they switch it up enough so that it isnt an issue
3.5/5
"Essential" is pushing it. It's good though.
Helps when you already like the band as the album seems to dwell a little too long on guitar solos and wanna be Santana sequences ... Nice take on Stormy Monday, but too drawn out as is an extended version of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and a 23-minute long version of the "Whipping Post", which seems to also not connect much with the audience.
This was decent, they definitely shred
That's my jam but when listen to one 20 minutes track you keep wondering is this for real or somebody making fun of you.
Nice sound but tedious
Pretty good
I enjoyed the album, but enough to give it more than a 3. I get that they're a jam band, but some of the songs were frankly too long. I mean 23 minutes, that's fucking bonkers. It's also great quality for live performances, props to that!
My opinion on this album is really two-fold. On the one hand this is one of the best live albums ever recorded. You can really hear this is an amazing band that really need a live venue to bring the magic that their regular albums kind of lack. They're bringing their own compositions and covers to impressive song lengths with passion and intensity. Duane Allman is the best slide guitarist I've ever heard. The intermezzo on "You Don't Love Me" is the prime example of this. On the other hand, if you really don't like listening to glorified jam sessions on record while not in the crowd this is a bitter pill to swallow. And you lose interest after the 2nd 8 minute solo.
So I'll admit, even though I love me some jam and some southern rock, I have never fully bought into the hype surrounding The Allman Brothers Band. I love their album Eat A Peach, but outside of that, I have never felt a magnetic attraction. I have attempted to listen to and review this on 3 separate occasions, but each time, I kind of lose focus. Ultimately, my feeling is that these guys can certainly jam, but where the Dead and Phish have cohesive jams that explore different sonic environments and interplay between the members, I largely find Allman Brothers to be a bit messy and long-winded with a significant focus on solo guitar excursions. In a word, they just don't feel as cohesive. Perhaps for some that is the point, and certainly there are plenty of guitar licks to enjoy here. For me, it just isn't what I go in for. That said, the blues rock is solid and I absolutely love that In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is on here and drawn out. This exists in a weird place between a 3 and a 4 to me, with individual songs having 5 moments. Going 3.
I've given this same review for half the live albums on this list, but this is another one where the actual concert seems like it would have been a blast but it doesn't mean it needs to be an album. 3.5 stars
not really into jam bands. never have been. They are clearly good musicians but that's as much I can say objectively.
Sound is very good, really like them, but the live version of the songs just goes on for too long. Could be an easy 4 otherwise.
They only have a live version?
Couldnt find the album on my apple music so went for Essential. Class Rock time!
Not a blues-rock guy so the departures from that genre are very appreciated and whipping post always goes hard. Stormy Monday and Elizabeth Reed were also beautiful and the guitarwork was AMAZING this album reeeally gets a lot better the more u listen. The extended renditions of songs are super interesting and they are all playing out of their minds. Fav tracks: Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Whipping Post
Great musicianship but one track of improv jamming is sufficient to get the idea of the rest of the live album.
This seems like it would've been an awesome show to be at, but without the visual impact it kinda just... Sounds like a lot of noodling. Still pretty entertaining for a random live album, all told, but I don't feel like I'll really want to come back to it. At least not until some of their studio LPs inevitably show up on the list later.
Okay 2.5
It’s alright. I’ve never cared for long jammy stuff. I like the Allman Brothers in general and definitely respect, but this is just so drawn out. I would have preferred a tighter set of shorter songs and maybe one or two long ones.
Przyjemny blues do grania w tle.
Pretty good rock live album. Btwn four and three for me
Such a great record to put on, well, anytime! The musicianship is stellar. I feel like this is a proper entry to blues, it feels a little easier to take in, the musicians are top notch, mixed well. Classic
I’d never heard The Allman Brothers Band before so I was keen to hear what they were all about. I dug it. A lot of great jamming on this album and a fantastic live recording. I will admit that I didn’t quite listen to all of it, but almost an hour. I felt like I had got the idea. It’s good. A solid 3.
yeah it's nice
sounds like the soundtrack of basically every BBQ joint I have ever been in
I recognise it's good, but not my jam
So, "Stormy Weather" has the most listens on Spotify but I really could not get into that track at all. The rest of it was perfectly serviceable for a live album but not something I would listen to straight. There are times where live albums beat out regular recorded albums for me, but this wasn't one of them.
3.5/5, quite enjoyable blues
Live to ciężka sprawa, no i tutaj nie donieśli
2 hours?!? Great background music
it’s not their fault this style of music became the definition of cringe but it did and so no matter how accomplished this can get no more than 3 stars
Quite fun blues - but some long old tunes that really lost me.
Second time hearing this album. It's nice music. The singer has a soulful voice (when he is singing, which is rare). For me, there is just too much repetition, noodling around, and some songs are just drawn out way too long. Or maybe I just don't like blues very much. Average 3/5 for me. Favorite track: Hot-lanta
Great album. I don't listen to the Allman Brother enough. Will need to listen to some more of their stuff.
I don’t really like live albums, and this was too long for me. I don’t feel like giving it a 2, though, because I appreciate it in some way that I can’t really describe.
Like with the Deep Purple album, these jam-my live show albums just aren't my thing. I will say that I liked this one more than Made in Japan though, Whipping Post does go pretty hard (even at its 23 minute run-time), and there are a couple shorter offerings here I don't mind. 2.5/5
An old jam band. I wasn't mad, it was well performed blues. Nothing remarkably inspirational, but also nothing to complain about
None of the songs stood out as something I’d want to listen to again. Technically sounds good, but waaaaay to much instrumentals.
I was very torn on how to rate this. It’s really a 3.5 for me - I like it better than the things I have given 3s, but v not quite as much as things I have given 4s.
cool guitar, lil blues action. hard to listen to all in one go though.
I have mentioned before in this list that I am not a big fan of live albums. I totally understand that this was a great performance, but if I wasn’t there it I would prefer a studio album most of the time. They are playing great and the instrumental parts for minutes long are amazing. But not something I would listen to again. Still worth 3 stars though
Good jams but I had my fill pretty quickly
Can't deny the musicianship to be able to play that well live, but man some of the jam session sections felt like they were never going to end
Pretty good
- First listen - Enjoyed it to begin with, but tailed off - Jams are good to a point, but are too long and become background noise - Fav songs: Stormy Monday, Done Somebody Wrong, Statesboro Blues
I'm not usually a fan of live albums. In the rare case, a live album is an attempt to capture the energy and spirit of a band that excels in that arena and this is the case with At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band. The Allman Brothers are a result of their culture, which being a southern band would have some country influence. The addition of blues funk and soul are what takes them from a generic classic rock radio band to an experience. That all ends with the death of Duane Allman, but man this album grooves. 3.5 / 5.
Wow that was an absolute sesh. They must have been exhausted after 1hr14 mins of solid blues and solos. It was a lot more prog than I was expecting. Allman brothers just makes me think Jessica, which is way more jaunty than all that. I enjoy and appreciate blues but this was a bit much for me! Enjoyable background as a pottered in the flat
It was okay
Overall a good album.
T3B 1. Stormy Monday 2. You Don’t Love Me 3. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
Decent rocking blues album. When you see how long some of the tracks are you do fear the worst… but it’s actually quite engaging. If a little samey in places
Bit noodly and twiddly for my liking, but clearly brilliant musicianship with a few highlights.
Good for a live album, but as one long jam session lacked direction
Blues rock with a bit of jam band thrown in. It's fine. I could listen to it, but I get impatient.
Not mine
Feels like a classic. Fun solos and jazzy rock melodies
Songs a bit long and stagnant. Maybe cutting the album at some points would've helped.
Good but a bit miso and long
Kinda dope
Good strumming
A lot of this I quite like, nice easy listening, good jams etc. Especially towards the end, they really go for it. But then there's plenty of smug, masturbatory musical interludes that are annoying and soooo long, and do absolutely nothing. Imagine seeing them in concert and a third of the gig is them just them wanking each-other off on stage.
The Allmans are never better than when they’re live. I do miss the vocal harmonies on this, especially on Midnight Rider.
It took me three kicks at the can on this one. Just would put it on, here that long rambling and think nope not in the mood for this... But today I guess I was...and while I reaaaaaaally don't think Whipping Pole should be a (for me) tedious 23 minute opus, I liked almost all of the rest of this and even the In Memory of Elizabeth Reid one clocking in at 13 minutes and 4 second doesn't bother, in fact, I liked that one... I just prefer my whipping post in short stints I suppose.
It's cool, it is not really my cup of tea though. Some of these songs are really long.
Blues!
2nd November 2022 Listened mainly on the drive to Bristol office. Left at lunch, back for a chilled evening of horror films with Jen back from Norfolk. I enjoy the bluesy short numbers more than the 20 minute prog epics but there’s no denying the quality of the band and the musicianship. 3.5 if I could.
Switched with Monday album, hangout, halloweeen, candy, bye chad, block party, neighbor’s got wine and lingo, hamburgers, decent time, people recognizing you on apps
Nice listen.
71, what a great year for music and this is a good bluesy starter.
'At Fillmore East' is an exhibition in stretching the six-note blues scale to last more than 70 minutes. The Allman Brothers Band does it to perfection and really shines when they switch up the dynamics and/or tempo during the lengthy tracks. The closing, original 'Whipping Post' is a great example. But alas, at the end of the day it's still just very talented musicians jamming it out and could just have well been a recording of the band in their rehearsal space. Albeit with VERY good sound quality!
Southern Rock Blues Live. Interesting sound.
I like The Allman Brothers in doses, but 80 minutes of it is just sooo much
Du bon blues cru et sale, classique.
If you like 12-bar blues and exceptionally soulful noodling, this record is for you
I can agree this is probably great, but it wasn't really for me, too long for a start and just don't think I'll listen too again
Overall, great album. However, it's a live album, and the experience of being there would definitely better. Especially with the long solos. If the animals of the forest started wearing denim, this is the music that they would produce; if deer could play guitar.
just sounds like a jam session that someone decided to record. I like it, but I'm not likely to remember anything I just heard.
Rock n roll with some blues, lively, nice with some nice guitar riffs but not my cup of tea
This would be banging to see live, but my attention span struggled ngl
🕺 🎸
Superb, atmospheric rock and blues. A live show I definitely would of liked to be at. Maybe the last few songs were a bit long but i guess thats the point.
Went on a bit and not as good as I was hoping
Good album from a pretty good band.
You can tell when there's about a minute left in each track. It's when they realize they've got somewhere they need to go and stop wandering around on stage. I love the Allman Brothers (why is THIS album the one they've got representing them?) and I'm willing to put up with a lot of bullshit, but this is too much jam and not enough band. Best track: Statesboro Blues
At Fillmore East is the first live album & third overall by American rock band the Allman Brothers. Over three days the album was recorded at live jam sessions by the band at the New York music venue Fillmore East. This album is considered to be the band's artistic and commercial breakthrough, by rapidly increasing their fanbase. The band had been making a name for themselves by touring and performing live, while their studio albums were not as popular as they'd like. This led them to record this live album which captures the fun experience of jamming with this band in concert. The Allman Brothers' music is a mix of blues, rock, country, and jazz - the best combination for a jam band. Because of the slow burn from these jam songs, a double album was needed to contain their live show's experience. This album had strong sales from release so it was certified gold in October 1971, and certified platinum in August 1992. It is widely considered to be the best live rock album of all time, and at the time of release the band was compared with another more famous jam band - the Grateful Dead. This is a great blues rock album that captured a piece of American history from the 70's, and everyone should lend it an ear.
The bluesss baby One of my moms favorite bands
Some superb guitar work here but, despite obvious technical prowess this group had, I've always felt at a remove from their sound. Give me The Band's first two albums over thus stuff any day.
I'm not one for live albums. Lots of live guitar wanking in this one
Geiler schmieriger Blues!
Okaaaaayyyy
Not bad. Bluesy jam bands aren't really my thing, but there were some interesting riffs. Not much that held my intention more than intermittently. Might try again some other time.
