Actually, I'm not a fan of music without the lyrics, so this album just feels like the background music. And it's not bad, it's just not for me, I mean, it's good for studying because it doesn't have that noisy/distracting sounds, but I'd rather listen to some music with lyrics in it

Not my thing. This is his 3rd album and it sounds just like the first two. I don't understand or appreciate jazz. The intro song was all I really needed to hear. BORRRRRIIIINNNNG from start to finish. I love energetic horns, this is not that. It's like funeral music in New Orleans. The man could play, I get it, but this isn't innovative, it was never popular outside of the jazz community, no hits, boring background music in a bar I wish I had never gone into. 2 stars

2.5 stars I don’t know if there’s something I’m missing about jazz. I understand that this is a representation of a shift in jazz, a “birth” of you will… but it just sounds like what “jazz music” is to me. Sure, it’s not as esoteric or mind boggling as some experimental 20 minute tracks can be, but it doesn’t sound so different than more straight forward stuff I’ve heard in the background for most of my life. And perhaps that is more of a testament to how much I’m used to bebop/postbop/whatever that I take for granted that jazz was different before. I liken this to old blues records like Muddy Waters: I can appreciate what it did for music and how it inspired music I enjoy today, but this stuff is not something I would actually listen to. And if this list is called albums you MUST listen to before you die, I think that classification doesn’t fit. But apparently many people would disagree with me. That being said, the songs are all quick and the album is brief. It’s all quite listenable. It’s not at all a pain in the ass to get through. So I’ll give it points for that over many things on this list.

Not as mind bending as I was expecting, but then I am not listening in 1957. More alike than different from track to track, and while obviously stacked with talent, Miles doesn't stand out as much as he blends in. I would say his soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l'echafaud is a more immediate and personal record from the same period.

I know Miles Davis is THE jazz guy... but I just don't love jazz. It's an extremely important building block for so much music and maybe I'm just too stupid to understand it but it doesn't do it for me

Forgettable jazz

Cool began as rebellion and ended as wallpaper. When Miles Davis released The Birth of the Cool, he wasn’t trying to start a trend; he was trying to get some air. Bebop had turned jazz into an Olympic event - all velocity and virtuosity, no room to breathe. Davis’s answer was silence, space, and understatement. He made stillness sound radical. His cool was an act of refusal: a rejection of spectacle, of demand, of the social compulsion to perform. The horn spoke quietly, so you listened harder. For a while, that kind of calm was thrilling. It suggested control in a noisy world, a way to stay dignified while everything else boiled over. Cool was courage disguised as detachment - standing up and standing apart as roughly the same thing. But rebellion, like a good riff, only works once. The moment it’s copied, it becomes attitude. The controlled tempo, the self-contained posture, the immaculate minimalism: all absorbed, flattened, commodified. The pose of indifference replaced the substance of resistance. It became disdain - then worse. The sound of cool was laminated by culture, translated into advertising’s dialect of detachment. It ceased to be oppositional and became ambient. Now it sells coffee, sunglasses, hybrid cars. It is the official soundtrack of the middlebrow - the hum of playlists and loft apartments. What was once a defiant whisper against hysteria has become background music for people afraid of sincerity. Cool’s relational nature doomed it. It could only exist as contrast - to heat, to hysteria, to sincerity. Once those oppositions were appropriated, cool lost its tension. The birth of the cool was, inevitably, the beginning of its death. The embers that glowed under Miles’s quiet horn have cooled to ash - elegant, tasteful, and entirely cold. 2 [over ‘Rocker’] Maria: “I don’t want that.” Me: “You don’t like this song?” Maria: “No I want a happy song.” Me: “Is this not a happy song?” Maria: “No this isn’t a happy song, this is a bad song.” I actually thought it was alright but the Birth of the Cool was not cool enough for my two year old. And she hadn’t even heard its stupid title, which is the squarest thing about it. 2/5

4/10 I just don't like jazz. It sounds dated and of a different era. I might as well be rating Beethoven and Mozart.

Har förstått att det är en samling av stenkakesinglar. Bortsett från det öppenbara med låtlängden märks det på två vis. För det första musiken provar lite allt möjligt bara det är nytt, avsaknad av röd tråd är tydlig. För det andra. Det finns inga andningspauser, musiken får aldrig chans att vila, precis allt ska propsa på maximal uppmärksamhet hela tiden. Detta blir förstås naturligt då varje låt egentligen skall stå för sig själv, men på ett regelrätt album hade man förstås haft möjlighet att addera stunder av respit. För det tutas på hela tiden och mestadels rätt bra. Ibland är det sämre, "Move", "Rocker" och "Budo" har jag svårt för. Ibland är det skitbra "Deception", "Venus..." och kanske även "Boplicity" . Men grejen är främst att jag pallar bara typ två spår i taget, jag kan inte lyssna på det här som ett album, jag hade behövt de där andninspauserna. En sak till, likt mycket jazz försvinner det jag främst uppskattar med jazz, nämligen groovet, rytmen, till förmån för soloinstrumentet. Trummor och bas är så lågt mixade i produktionen att dom nästan försvinner när det tutas på. Jag är inte så noga med tutandet, det är svänget jag vill åt. Det är en tvåa som nosar på en trea

Nej, nu går skam på torra land. Ett samlingsalbum på listan! Inspelningarna i sig är mest av akademiskt intresse. Så här lät Miles innan han hittade rätt med Round about midnight och Kind of blue. Eller för den delen Sketches of Spain eller Bitches brew. Musiken får en tvåa men redaktörerna är underkända.

May be the birth of cool.. But cool hadn't quite peaked yet. Miles has an expansive discography, and within it are more than one five star albums. For me, this doesn't quite boop that button.

I liked Moon Dreams and Venus de Milo. Godschild (especially the opening) and Boplicity were okay. I don't think I like trumpets that much.

Of all the jazz I’ve had to listen to, this has been the best. Some of it had melodies and the songs were short. It was also more upbeat. It was much better than the Indian music I had to listen to yesterday.

I've heard much better jazz albums. it's not bad but I think the era had a lot more to offer.

This is fine as background music. I'm not annoyed with it but doesn't really thrill me. I probably don't understand the history of jazz enough to appreciate what Miles Davis is doing. For jazz lovers I'm sure this is a great album but I feel like I'm stuck listening to hold music. I don't think I like Miles Davis that much.

Jazz I feel does not get the attention it deserves on this list. To explain, I’m surprisingly religious when it comes to listening to a new album everyday, and with that I usually (sometimes I can’t decide how I feel so I’ll give it a few days/replays) only spend a full day with the album. Sometimes that means I only listen to it once or twice, which I think hurts Jazz music and Rap music the most. Both for similar reasons, that being that the enjoyment from jazz comes from knowing the song so well you know what notes/sequence come next, and for rap, knowing the lyrics and bars and trying to keep up with the song. But yah what im getting at is that I haven’t had enough time with this album, I also feel the same way about Johnathan Coltrane’s A Love Supreme cause I gave that album a bad review as well. But I can acknowledge that there’s an unbelievable amount of talent that went into this and that album. But I feel like both of these albums don’t have a lot to grab onto, it just feels like you’re drowning in music. But as I got my second and third full play throughs I started to actually recognize that he songs more and more. Sadly I just got sick to death of the same atmospheres sonically over and over again so I had to move on. I think over time this album could grow on me and I could see myself regretting this star rating. But sadly it’s not really for me right now.

For the jazz lovers this would be a good one. A non jazz person it is difficult to listen to these albums, after a couple of songs it gets repetitive and boring. The type of music you will hear as background music on restaurant having a nice dinner.

Remastered ça serait cool

Some of the slower songs (Moon dreams, Boplicity) I enjoyed as moody background music. Nice for working or reading. Many of the other songs are a bit too note-filled for my taste. I'm not a jazz nut, and I feel that much of the Jazz repertoire is meant to show off the technical and academic prowess of the players. At some points (Rocker for example) the big band sound makes me smile. But the solos turn me off again.

I suppose it's good jazz, but I don't have the discerning ear to differentiate between good and bad jazz. I would rate it between 2 and 3, but I will settle on 2 because I'm unlikely to listen to it again

I know this album is important, it just didn't jive with me. I didn't really feel anything while listening to it. It would be a cool album to read/focus to. I will try it again in a few weeks to see if maybe it is my headspace.

Well it's jazz. A genre I'm not in love with. It is very good and in its original form, only 35 minutes long. Again, I dont think I would give it a second listen.

You can feel the talent and hear things that have been sampled or borrowed by other artists. But this was not my cup of tea. At times it was just unorganized noise.

If there werent any Davis albums on the list I would agree on the placement in the list, but we just had Kind of Blue which is better. 2/5

This is an album I found required sitting, undistrated in order to listen to. Being the first Miles Davis album in its entirety I sat through I had great expectations. The standout track for me was Boplicity, the other tracks are good but I didn't get the same energy from

Welp, I listened to the whole album and couldn’t tell the difference between any of the songs except the last one where there’s a guy singing. The rest are just jazzy and lots of trumpet solos. I don’t feel like I know enough jazz that I’m not a good one to critique this. 2/5

I’m sure this album is more to some, but to me, other than something to put on at a dinner party, it’s not giving me much.

I just don't like jazz. It gives me the heebie jeebies.

Miles Davis is great, but this album runs into the same issue I have with a lot of jazz albums - it’s just a series of musical phrases without any overarching theme or melody. As impressive as some solos can be (especially live), a solo by itself isn’t a song.

Obviously brilliantly talented and a very pleasant listen. But I wouldn't choose to listen too a whole album of trumpet normally. But I guess that's kinda the point! Some beautiful tracks that I felt needed to be listened to in a far more focused and appreciative manner than through my phone while in the shower. Probably a 2-2.5

I can't believe an era existed where this was considered the birth of "cool." It sounded like all jazz to me, I couldn't find anything that stood out to differentiate it. I know Davis is a big name but this felt like all the rest. The same backing bass line, the little cymbal tapping, some horns, great. Not really for me. 1.75

For a jazz album I guess it's pretty cool. Better than the slow stuff. Some good back up drums and piano. Miles is an icon that I never listened too...jazz not being my fave and way before my time. I can't really appreciate it for these reasons so I would not be able to argue his place on history. Better than some of the newer stink bomb albums recently on the list...2.13.

Birth Of The Cool is a fine look at a some classic jazz from a bygone era. I can respect Miles Davis and recognize his part in music history, so this album deserves to be on the list, it's just not something that I want to spend any extended time with. There's unquestionably some great trumpet playing on this album, but after a couple songs I don't want to hear any more. This is best served as background music at theme park or elsewhere in small doses. 1.69

There is a lot to like, but I found it a bit boring after a while, perhaps because the trumpet as the lead instrument has a limited octave range.

2.5 - it don't dislike it but i would never listen to it in my spare time.

The title would have you assume that cool would be birthed in this album. Unfourantely I didn't hear such a thing. My Favourite track of this album was Rocker with its dilightfully simple and recognisable theme, and somewhat interesting solos, with Rouge coming in a close second. I enjoyed the few drum solos featured, as I am a sucker for any drum solo. The rest of the album seemed a little uninspired with a lack of catchy or recognisable themes, but then again that is not what jazz is known for. The improvasiation was impressive but once again didn't tickle my ear drum in any way (I hope you get a good mental image from this analouge). Overall, kinda mid jazz album imho.

Another album that was technically impressive but just did nothing for me.

Miles Davis is cool but this one ain’t it. Sure, it was 1958 I’m sure this was fucking great because what else was there. Big band is nothing but a big bunch of skilled musicians playing bland, boring music. More doesn’t mean better. This is boring. 2.5 stars

2.5 Not really sure what to say about this one. It’s a jazz album, and it’s not a particularly exciting or interesting one at that. It’s also not even really a studio album as it is more of a collection of songs from early in his career, meaning it doesn’t feel structured in any kind of way, but then again, is any jazz album? Inoffensive to the ears, but not the kind of thing I’d willingly put on again, especially with how lacking in variety it feels. I appreciate him keeping this short, but in listening to this during a drive to the airport, I still found myself bored pretty quickly - it felt like my radio was stuck on NPR or something. I do think Miles is a talented dude, but unfortunately his music just doesn’t speak to me.

This was short and quite pleasant, like listening to the background music to a cartoon from the 50s. It didn't click with me at all and I could happily never listen to it again without feeling I had missed anything.

I suppose this must be Miles just before he went off the deep end into hard-bop, this is surprisingly conventional I think. The voicing of tha band is quite traditional and there are elements of swing and big band music, it sounds like the bridge between wartime jazz and the new era he was about to spearhead. I liked it, though it didn't blow me away, probably will return for further listens.

This album could've been one song and I would've believed you. Maybe that's on me for being ignorant but there just isn't much here. I think in general a lack of lyrics is going to make any album lesser rated, but even the instrumentation here is just kind of boring and grating. 4/10 (2/5)

Birth of the Cool I dunno. I’ve tried many many times to listen to and try and understand jazz, but it never sticks. I do like some vocal jazz and piano led stuff, but up tempo with trumpets and sax parping away starts to irritate me pretty quickly. I can however appreciate its importance in the history of 20th century popular music, and the skill and virtuosity of the players. And while there are the elements of it and some songs I enjoy, I just think that I don’t really like jazz and won’t ever really like jazz, and ultimately I think no one really likes jazz, they just decide liking jazz is their personality, and that by liking jazz they have a far more sophisticated understanding of music, and therefore anyone liking any other type of music is a Luddite peasant. With this album though, it’s not too much of a bebop up tempo parp fest, although it does wander into that area quite frequently. I couldn’t really tell many of the songs apart, and it all kind of passed me by quite unremarkably. Although I did like Moon Dreams quite a bit, the slower tempo and less frantic melody was very nice amongst the other songs. I’ll give it a 2, based on 1 for the actual album and the 1 for its influence on 20th century music. I’m glad it exists and I’m glad I listened to it, but it’s not for me ⭐️⭐️

Couldn't hack it

* Two songs in (Move, Jeru) but very funky beats so far. * Moon Dreams feels like it came outta a Noir detective mystery. Somewhat yawn inducing too. * For some reason, Venus De Milo triggered memories of the episode of Tom and Jerry where Tom's performing "You're Still my Baby" and Jerry, who is trying to sleep, keeps bouncing around the place. * Just starting song number six, Deception, but barring Moon Dreams, I find that they all kinda blend together. Feel like it'd be quite easy for me to mistake one song for another if I wasn't paying much attention. * Rocker has got me snapping my fingers... so that's a good sign I suppose. * I like the piano in Rouge around the 0:45 second mark. * Lots of talent but not my style. Does nothing for me

given that I don't take historical context or none of the "lore" into account for any of my ratings, this is just boring jazz to me I have to say, the global reviews for this album has some of the most unfunny people I have read the reviews of since starting this

I must be a dumb dumb because I simply do not vibe with jazz. I don't know why. It makes me physically uncomfortable. I respect it but it's just not for me.

It’s just not my jam. Over the years I’ve tried to like jazz. I truly have. I understand the teamwork and musicianship to play jazz. It’s tremendously hard and takes great talent and skill. I simply cannot find a place where it works for me. I need something less intrusive for background music. I need something straightforward and upbeat when I’m moving my body. After the first few bars of the first song, my mind started to wander into creativity-much like Miles Davis. Was it the jazz? No. I do that all the time. The jazz got in the way more than it expanded my thoughts. I guess I can’t sit with the cool kids today.

Overall: Miles is an absolutely brilliant horn player. I really should incorporate more jazz band in my life, so this was a welcomed listen. Only a couple tracks mentioned below really caught my attention or stood out. Having this on low in the background while enjoying my 1st cup of coffee for the day is about the only way I see myself enjoying jazz in general. But in that case, it is quite enjoyable. Ik zie de naam Miles Davis en oude trauma's borrelen zich een weg omhoog in m'n lichaam. Het eerste wat ik doe is de lengte van het album checken: 36 minuten. Misschien gaat dit me toch lukken. Ik merk dat m'n geduld voor dit soort muziek compleet is weggeslagen na wat nare ervaringen via deze lijst. Dit is niet eens de meest rommelige, abstracte jazz (zeker vergeleken met Teefjes Brouwsel is dit veel samenhangender) maar toch heb ik er helemaal geen zin in. Dit is meer de Whiplash-jazz. Topfilm, kutmuziek. Dit is voor mij een 2, puur vanwege het feit dat dit beter behapbaar is dan eerder genoemd album van Miles. Toch zijn ook deze 36 minuten een flinke uitdaging voor me. Ik zal het er nog een keer bij zeggen: Ik vind dit wel goed/knap, maar ik vind het gewoon kut om te luisteren.

Not a fan of Jazz, heavy for my ears and mind. It is chaotic at the same time light and not in your face, so on the level of annoyingly chaotic for me. With that said, there were some interesting aspects of the compositions and sounds. Really like to catch glimpses of drum parts, mostly.

Yawn, a bunch of arbitrary be-bop jazz tootling over those cliched up'n'down double bass scales and ride cymbal/snare brush-heavy jazz drumming. Nice. Yes, he's a great trumpeter, perhaps some Purcell or military marches might make for better material. Not cool.

It is cool but all tends to merge into a wallpaper sound of sameness. Sometimes Myles gets some dynamism going but not often enough.

It’s a jazz album, sorry to jazz but I didn’t get anything out of this.

This is my third Miles Davis album. Even though this is as good as the others, I give a vote towards the spirit of “before you die.” In my opinion, we could find 1-2 different albums and someone on their death bed doesn’t need to waste their time after Kind of Blue or Bitches Brew.

Four albums by this fucker, my arch-nemesis, and this is the first one that I would call even barely listenable. I don't get it. I know that he's probably in the top 3 most influential musicians of all time, but my brain rejects his music. This is strictly a Charles Mingus and John Coltrane household.

Clearly a set of fine musicians, led by the biggest name in jazz. Despite all that the birth of cool never really hit home. Most of the album felt like the kind of big band music guests walk out to on the Jimmy Kimmel/Fallon show. That was about as far it took me, the melodies were complex but not that interesting. The album didnt go places and the theme got repetitive by the end. If this album was the birth of cool jazz, we've come a long way. Then again, Coltrane has better albums from the same period, so age is no explanation.

I know, okay? I know that Miles Davis is jazz royalty. I know that he's, like, the best jazz trumpet player ever or whatever. I get it. But it's kinda boring, isn't it? Is that what the mean by "cool"? Because it doesn't feel cool. It feels... soft. Especially compared to the OTHER Miles Davis album on the list. "Bitches Brew" is so aggressive and chaotic while maintaining every bit of the sheer musicality that Davis is known for. And yes, I KNOW, okay? I know that there's 13 years between this and that. But THIS is boring while THAT is fascinating. Maybe we just needed the one Miles Davis album on here, hmm?

When I was at college, lots of people had posters of Miles Davis. That was a way to show you were ‘cool’. I didn’t! I just couldn’t get on with those jazz tunes. Jazz is an all encompassing term for so many things. I don’t hate all jazz, but I have never been able to get on with this kind Miles Davis and all those musicians are very talented but this is not my cup of tea. I made myself listen to this three different times on three different days at different times of the day to see if I would feel any different. I think I’ve given it a good go but I’m still not feeling it.

Too jazz heavy for my taste. Listened on an airplane and had to skip through some songs. To my ears it all sounds too similar. Not my style, I tried.

I've heard of Miles Davis, but never listened to any of his stuff before today. I must say that jazz is not my favourite, and just instrumental music even less so. This music is beautiful in its own right though, and would be perfect for setting ambiance in a coffee shop or restaurant. I don't understand jazz

This jazzy album has me bopping my head, however, compared to other jazz works, I'm sure this is exceptional, because I do like it. The problem is, Jazz isn't my top cup of tea, I'd probably give this album a 4/10 due to my enjoyment just not being there.

I feel like it's an album that I would've appreciated in my teens during my stages of teenage revolution. But right now ,lyrically and musically I find it hard to connect with it but appreciate how it's the early punk eras and can definitely see how they mightve inspired bands that came after them.

Does the album title ring true, yeah.....nah. It's quite listenable and not bad at all, and would be important for jazz fans. But for me no song sticks out in particular, or any moment in that regard.

This is some Glenn Miller jazz that would get my grandparents tapping their toes on thick condominium carpet. Never heard this big band style Miles. I'm sure a cool jazz head can hear subtle innovation somewhere in the record, but to me this sounds like standard Duke Ellington Count Basie business with a few interesting flourishes and asides. Hard to imagine the same trumpet player making Bitches Brew a decade later. [insert reference to previous comments on Jack Kerouac and jazz sounding different in its 50s context]. This style of jazz is really nice, and makes for great background music for a podcast, but to me its like listening to Little Richard. I respect the origins of the genre but what the genre developed into is much more interesting. C+

Yeah, I guess this was cool. 1957 was a long time ago. Some nice sounding songs. Moon Dreams stuck out. This seems like the transition from big band to jazz maybe, the synthesis of Miles’ Sound? Maybe he was doing more interesting stuff live? I was having trouble hearing the jazz amongst the big band stuff and had to restart this 3 times. It might’ve been the birth of cool, but it wasn’t cool yet, I like Miles when he gets weird, when psych Rock starts to inspire him.

Very listenable jazz, although a touch too "old-timey" jazz for me; I do feel like I should put on a suit and be smoking at a table in a black and white movie while this band plays in the background. I very much enjoy some (not that much) later period Miles Davis and can hear where he's heading with this collection, so it's interesting on that level in knowing the path he'd travel from here to something like Kind of Blue in just 8 or 9 years. 5/10 2 stars for excellent music history and I'd be good with putting this as background music but I prefer less boppy and more mysterious jazz.

Le jazz c’est bon et j’aime bien les chansons sans paroles, mais ça reste une musique de background. Je ne m’imagine pas écouter cet album en travaillant, en baisant, en m’entraînant. Bref c’est une belle musique pour mettre en background dans un jeu, un souper ou un 5 à 7 à playa del Carmen en fumant un cigar et jasant avec des américains Je l’évite, moon dreams elle détone et n’est pas entraînante comme les autres Je lévite, l’album en général si je suis dans le sud cigare au bec, sinon bien j’écoute pas ça
