Reviews (page 12 of 13)
meh, don’t really appreciate jazz like that especially without a diversity of sound or lyrics
Fine background music. No real feelings about this one. Sorry Miles.
good vibes thats all. Not my thing
This just doesnt do anything for me at all. I know, I'm the worst. But it sounds like one long song. I respect it, I know theyre great musicians. But its totally lost one me
I'm not really a great jazz fan. But O know that Davis was something of a trailblazer. But this album is a bit of a noodly-doodly kind of jazz album, and I didn't really enjoy it too much. Matters were made worse by my streaming platform supplying an extended editions with a load of radio broadcast live performances complete with announcers and (in some cases) appalling vocals.
Não é minha praia!
This would make good film soundtrack music. But to listen to alone I just can't get on with jazz. It's just too smug and pretentious for me. But at least it's not prog rock.
Miles is right, this album is cool as hell. Too cool for me, unfortunately. I’m not a blues fan. Not the kind of instrumental tracks I like, but obviously he’s very talented.
Everybody reckons this bloke is a genius. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a song of his. I’m intrigued. Every song on this album is pretty much the same just longer or faster than the others. It sounds exactly the same.
Didn’t realize this was all instrumental but I also know nothing about miles Davis. Sounds real chill Post listen: Turns out miles Davis isn’t Sammie Davis jr. music all kind of just blends together and there were no standout tracks. Maybe I’m just not into jazz
I don't like jazz but it's tolerable
As someone who just does not like fast, swing-y jazz, I unfortunately have to put this one in the 'not for me' pile.
I can appreciate the iconicness of Miles Davis and how he changed the trajectory of music but I don’t like the sound of trumpets enough to enjoy this album.
I dont think I can deal with another jazz album
Cannot listen to it on its own, need to either watch it performed or functioning as a soundtrack.
some decent stuff but too much for one sitting for me
This was a big yawn for me. I’m sure this is all technically proficient, but it was in no way electrifying.
Funky, nice background music. Didn't grab my attention the whole time
Guess I am not that big into Jazz - too fast and chaotic
I can listen to and appreciate it, but I don’t get that much enjoyment from it.
Jake: Good but all sounds the same Greg: Good but all sounds the same Annie: Good but all sounds the same We obviously need more jazz training 🤣🤣
Miles Davis 1957 et Birth of the Cool. Mes héros s'appellent The Cure, Nick Cave, Joy Division ou New Order.
Background music
too nigga
Jazz ei oo mun juttu yhtään. Ei vaikka Miles Davies on taituri.
I liked this more than I thought I would! It definitely faded into the background and I lost concentration on it a lot but I really thought I would find it hard to listen to and I’d give up on it like I do with most Jazz. My opinion of jazz (except experimental(?) jazz that sounds like noise/nothing) is slowly changing like I hoped it would, I’m so glad. It’s a 2/5 but a 5/10.
Trumpet 😍😍 nice upbeat jazz album
I don’t appreciate a horn or horns in the forefront. For me this was jangling my nerves until the horns with lower notes took over, but that was usually fleeting.
When this was released it was so revolutionary that one critic said it wasn't even jazz. This is difficult to imagine today given that this is basically what I think of when someone says "jazz." It certainly is more melodic and song-based than a lot of jazz. And it's a bit surprising there are nine musicians on these tracks given how stark and empty a lot of it sounds. Most tracks focus on Miles's trumpet, and sometimes the drums do some cool stuff, but the other instruments are mostly in the background. Largely it's too simple for my liking, but livelier tracks like "Budo" are interesting. This is likely more interesting for jazz fans who can point out all the things that made it revolutionary than it is for the average person.
Great music
Jazzzz
Meh didn’t float my boat
Good and mellow.
Jazz really isn't my thing. I can't say I disliked it, but I don't ever see me returning to it. I'm sure there's reverence and importance to this album, but to me, it sounded like 40 minutes of music that would back a quirky 1960s film.
Its actully not so bad. I can listen this while im chiling or something liker that, but there is many other albums i prefer more than this.
toot
Before listening, I decided to read a short biography of Miles Davis; it's certainly impressive. He lived a relatively short life, but managed to play with a large number of renowned musicians and, most importantly, became the founder of several jazz styles. This record is a collection of his works from 1949-1950, which later became the foundation of the subgenre known as cool jazz (hence the album's title). The problem is that jazz gives you two options: either you're in the know, or it's completely out of your league. I'm going with the latter. The album is just over half an hour long, and it's all seemingly different, yet for me, it's all the same. It's not easy to listen to, and the slight feeling of being a bohemian in a 1950s American restaurant quickly becomes tiresome. Star for the fact that the author became a colossus of the genre during his lifetime and remains one to this day, and a star for the fact that, overall, this album can be pleasant background music for work, cooking dinner, or even dinner itself.
Very talented on the trumpet!
Glad it was only 35 mins as it kind of got on my nerves after a bit. Jazz isn’t for me.
Not bad in the moment but couldn't tell you a thing about it immediately after.
I don’t know what else to say about these jazzy records. It sounds alright.
Some of these recordings are from the late 40s so while not the oldest release must be in the running for oldest material. The discrete short tracks mean there weren't any other stuff to look out for like repeated motifs or call backs over the album's course and it helped clarify for me that I can take or leave jazz for casual listening. I said it before with the Duke album about it being a live genre and that sitting in the same room will always be a totally different experience
it's Jazz.. 01/26/2026
4/10 - Favorite song: Godchild
felt like i was at a fancy restaurant or something
This album is nearly 70 years old and it sounds like it. That's all I have to say
I respect it, but didn't enjoy it.
97/1001 First listen. Jazz. I just don’t get it. 3/10
Älter als ich ...
These type of instrumentals really don't do much for me in any way... :/
Trompetengedudel.
Definitely can appreciate the talent and the skill to create a body of work like this. I just don’t think jazz is for me. It would probably hit different if I listened to it live.
I guess it’s just not for me. I listened to it three times, nothing stood out, nothing excited me or bored me. It’s not a one because it didn’t offend my ears, but it’s not something I have any interest in hearing again
😕
uxmo kinos musikaa.
Not for me.
I didn't like it it was too old and most of the playlist was just sound without voice
First listen Saved 4/11 Top track: Boplicity
Jazz
I feel so ‘unsophisticated’ but - nope.
Jazzy - talented musicians making music I'm just not that into (I'm trying for the sake of my child though!), at least it was a quickie!
It's not for me I'm not a big fan of horns due to the high pitch but I can see why ppl like it
Actually, I'm not a fan of music without the lyrics, so this album just feels like the background music. And it's not bad, it's just not for me, I mean, it's good for studying because it doesn't have that noisy/distracting sounds, but I'd rather listen to some music with lyrics in it
Cute jazzy album but not my style
Not my thing. This is his 3rd album and it sounds just like the first two. I don't understand or appreciate jazz. The intro song was all I really needed to hear. BORRRRRIIIINNNNG from start to finish. I love energetic horns, this is not that. It's like funeral music in New Orleans. The man could play, I get it, but this isn't innovative, it was never popular outside of the jazz community, no hits, boring background music in a bar I wish I had never gone into. 2 stars
A jazz record I didn’t hate! Some song structure, and mercifully 32 minutes. Not unenjoyable to put on while working a nine to five desk job.
I just don't like Jazz music
Hate.
Trevligt, men skapade inte mersmak
4.9/10
2.5 stars I don’t know if there’s something I’m missing about jazz. I understand that this is a representation of a shift in jazz, a “birth” of you will… but it just sounds like what “jazz music” is to me. Sure, it’s not as esoteric or mind boggling as some experimental 20 minute tracks can be, but it doesn’t sound so different than more straight forward stuff I’ve heard in the background for most of my life. And perhaps that is more of a testament to how much I’m used to bebop/postbop/whatever that I take for granted that jazz was different before. I liken this to old blues records like Muddy Waters: I can appreciate what it did for music and how it inspired music I enjoy today, but this stuff is not something I would actually listen to. And if this list is called albums you MUST listen to before you die, I think that classification doesn’t fit. But apparently many people would disagree with me. That being said, the songs are all quick and the album is brief. It’s all quite listenable. It’s not at all a pain in the ass to get through. So I’ll give it points for that over many things on this list.
Not as mind bending as I was expecting, but then I am not listening in 1957. More alike than different from track to track, and while obviously stacked with talent, Miles doesn't stand out as much as he blends in. I would say his soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l'echafaud is a more immediate and personal record from the same period.
I know Miles Davis is THE jazz guy... but I just don't love jazz. It's an extremely important building block for so much music and maybe I'm just too stupid to understand it but it doesn't do it for me
It’s jazz
I enjoy his later work but this is too random for me.
It was fine as background music, but I wouldn't choose to listen to it again.
Don't get it, sorry
Forgettable jazz
Cool began as rebellion and ended as wallpaper. When Miles Davis released The Birth of the Cool, he wasn’t trying to start a trend; he was trying to get some air. Bebop had turned jazz into an Olympic event - all velocity and virtuosity, no room to breathe. Davis’s answer was silence, space, and understatement. He made stillness sound radical. His cool was an act of refusal: a rejection of spectacle, of demand, of the social compulsion to perform. The horn spoke quietly, so you listened harder. For a while, that kind of calm was thrilling. It suggested control in a noisy world, a way to stay dignified while everything else boiled over. Cool was courage disguised as detachment - standing up and standing apart as roughly the same thing. But rebellion, like a good riff, only works once. The moment it’s copied, it becomes attitude. The controlled tempo, the self-contained posture, the immaculate minimalism: all absorbed, flattened, commodified. The pose of indifference replaced the substance of resistance. It became disdain - then worse. The sound of cool was laminated by culture, translated into advertising’s dialect of detachment. It ceased to be oppositional and became ambient. Now it sells coffee, sunglasses, hybrid cars. It is the official soundtrack of the middlebrow - the hum of playlists and loft apartments. What was once a defiant whisper against hysteria has become background music for people afraid of sincerity. Cool’s relational nature doomed it. It could only exist as contrast - to heat, to hysteria, to sincerity. Once those oppositions were appropriated, cool lost its tension. The birth of the cool was, inevitably, the beginning of its death. The embers that glowed under Miles’s quiet horn have cooled to ash - elegant, tasteful, and entirely cold. 2 [over ‘Rocker’] Maria: “I don’t want that.” Me: “You don’t like this song?” Maria: “No I want a happy song.” Me: “Is this not a happy song?” Maria: “No this isn’t a happy song, this is a bad song.” I actually thought it was alright but the Birth of the Cool was not cool enough for my two year old. And she hadn’t even heard its stupid title, which is the squarest thing about it. 2/5
4/10 I just don't like jazz. It sounds dated and of a different era. I might as well be rating Beethoven and Mozart.
not bad, but it's just jazz
May be the birth of cool.. But cool hadn't quite peaked yet. Miles has an expansive discography, and within it are more than one five star albums. For me, this doesn't quite boop that button.
It´s jazz, it´s instrumental, it´s pretty well played according to my untrained ear, it´s not my style but it´s not bad. 2/5
So so samey.
Boring
I don‘t like Jazz
I liked Moon Dreams and Venus de Milo. Godschild (especially the opening) and Boplicity were okay. I don't think I like trumpets that much.
Of all the jazz I’ve had to listen to, this has been the best. Some of it had melodies and the songs were short. It was also more upbeat. It was much better than the Indian music I had to listen to yesterday.
Leider ned so lust gha uf jazz
Dead of the cool
I've heard much better jazz albums. it's not bad but I think the era had a lot more to offer.
This is fine as background music. I'm not annoyed with it but doesn't really thrill me. I probably don't understand the history of jazz enough to appreciate what Miles Davis is doing. For jazz lovers I'm sure this is a great album but I feel like I'm stuck listening to hold music. I don't think I like Miles Davis that much.
Jazz I feel does not get the attention it deserves on this list. To explain, I’m surprisingly religious when it comes to listening to a new album everyday, and with that I usually (sometimes I can’t decide how I feel so I’ll give it a few days/replays) only spend a full day with the album. Sometimes that means I only listen to it once or twice, which I think hurts Jazz music and Rap music the most. Both for similar reasons, that being that the enjoyment from jazz comes from knowing the song so well you know what notes/sequence come next, and for rap, knowing the lyrics and bars and trying to keep up with the song. But yah what im getting at is that I haven’t had enough time with this album, I also feel the same way about Johnathan Coltrane’s A Love Supreme cause I gave that album a bad review as well. But I can acknowledge that there’s an unbelievable amount of talent that went into this and that album. But I feel like both of these albums don’t have a lot to grab onto, it just feels like you’re drowning in music. But as I got my second and third full play throughs I started to actually recognize that he songs more and more. Sadly I just got sick to death of the same atmospheres sonically over and over again so I had to move on. I think over time this album could grow on me and I could see myself regretting this star rating. But sadly it’s not really for me right now.
I'm too much of a pleeb to appreciate this fancy music.
For the jazz lovers this would be a good one. A non jazz person it is difficult to listen to these albums, after a couple of songs it gets repetitive and boring. The type of music you will hear as background music on restaurant having a nice dinner.
The album I put on when I'm trying to impress a classy lady. (W.A.S.P. by W.A.S.P. if she's FILTHY)
Remastered ça serait cool
Some of the slower songs (Moon dreams, Boplicity) I enjoyed as moody background music. Nice for working or reading. Many of the other songs are a bit too note-filled for my taste. I'm not a jazz nut, and I feel that much of the Jazz repertoire is meant to show off the technical and academic prowess of the players. At some points (Rocker for example) the big band sound makes me smile. But the solos turn me off again.
I suppose it's good jazz, but I don't have the discerning ear to differentiate between good and bad jazz. I would rate it between 2 and 3, but I will settle on 2 because I'm unlikely to listen to it again
I know this album is important, it just didn't jive with me. I didn't really feel anything while listening to it. It would be a cool album to read/focus to. I will try it again in a few weeks to see if maybe it is my headspace.
I get it. I just don't GET it. Two stars because it deserves that at least. Two stars also because I just don't get it.
Well it's jazz. A genre I'm not in love with. It is very good and in its original form, only 35 minutes long. Again, I dont think I would give it a second listen.
I thought I would love this, but I only found it okay
Just seemed like regular jazz, but I liked the non-instrumental song.
Leichter unspektakulärer Jazz. Es war auszuhalten.
Felt like the sound track to a black and white movie taking place at a casino, but Moon Dreams is the one song I will go back to.
o.k. but not my preferred style of music.
Jazz is still not really my thing it would seem. I read that this album was under appreciated when it came out and later gained renown. Maybe I'm one of those people who wouldn't have liked it on release Standouts Darn That Dream 2/5
4/10
You can feel the talent and hear things that have been sampled or borrowed by other artists. But this was not my cup of tea. At times it was just unorganized noise.
If there werent any Davis albums on the list I would agree on the placement in the list, but we just had Kind of Blue which is better. 2/5
Do you like jazz
No, it wasn't.
Not my bag
wasnt a fan, could have been in a mood
I'm not cool enough for this, and that's ok with me.
I just don’t like jazz all that much but this was an ok listen
He’s a legend but not my style.
Not a jazz guy
Again not my favorite style of jazz:(
Blaasinstrument
Yep, that's jazz.
Jazz is not my thing. I can appreciate the musicianship that is heard here but can't say I really enjoyed it. Favorite: Godchild Would I listen to it again: No
Jazz. Dinner jazz, peppy jazz, sad jazz. I get it but have never like it.
I don’t like it much, for example Kind Of Blue was more for me
2+ Stars (6/15)
Sometimes a bit cringe but otherwise great
Vähä liian coolia omaan makuun.
Alright, nothing too exciting. Dissonant and uncomfortable at times
Perfect for a specific type of event (obviously legendary guy) that calls for instrumental jazz - fancy cocktail hour or blasting in the sonos of sick house, but not something I'm reaching to always put on
Not to my taste
Bluesy and jazzy
If you like this kind of thing, I’m sure it’s great
This is an album I found required sitting, undistrated in order to listen to. Being the first Miles Davis album in its entirety I sat through I had great expectations. The standout track for me was Boplicity, the other tracks are good but I didn't get the same energy from
Despite overall enjoyment, minus points for compilation album.
It all sounded the same. One track after the next!
Sounds too much like a cartoon soundtrack
Welp, I listened to the whole album and couldn’t tell the difference between any of the songs except the last one where there’s a guy singing. The rest are just jazzy and lots of trumpet solos. I don’t feel like I know enough jazz that I’m not a good one to critique this. 2/5
I'm sure it's genius and I'm just too unrefined to get it. 2/5
Jazz Trompeter aus den 50ern. Ist ok, aber nicht meine Musikrichtung. 2/5
I’m sure this album is more to some, but to me, other than something to put on at a dinner party, it’s not giving me much.
I just don't like jazz. It gives me the heebie jeebies.
Miles Davis is great, but this album runs into the same issue I have with a lot of jazz albums - it’s just a series of musical phrases without any overarching theme or melody. As impressive as some solos can be (especially live), a solo by itself isn’t a song.
Jazz just bores me, man. I'm sorry.
Nothing mind-blowing. Pretty good for a jazz album.
Was expecting to really enjoy this and instead found it tedious
Jazz sounds so frenetic to me and so tuneless. I understand he’s talented but I’m in no position to assess that. To me: 2/5
kind of ok
Tough run after Hugh.. too much trumpet this week. I appreciate Miles Davis for who he is, but will not listen to this again
Obviously brilliantly talented and a very pleasant listen. But I wouldn't choose to listen too a whole album of trumpet normally. But I guess that's kinda the point! Some beautiful tracks that I felt needed to be listened to in a far more focused and appreciative manner than through my phone while in the shower. Probably a 2-2.5
i dont think i really like jazz. i appreciate it for the beautiful genre it is, but i really cant get into this
Just some old timey trumpet innit
Background music to the character creation screen of a Temu Sims knock-off.
I appreciate the artistry and the reputation but not music I would choose to listen to.
Enjoyed when I was younger
This isn’t foreground music. 2.0
que no me gusta el jazz carajo
Not for me
Not really my thing, i may like jazz but this felt like noice
Not a fan of miles Davis and this didn't change my mind high 2.
jazz is not mine sorry, but hes one of the best
So dry
Det her er alt jeg forventede.
Sorry, but I just don't get this sort of jazz at all. It's not unpleasant, and the musicianship is excellent, but I could listen to it all day and not remember a single note.
I would probably like this more with more listens.
Super solid and exciting but at the same time grounding. Can’t explain it that well since jazz isn’t my go-to genre. You have to be in the mood to listen to it. This demands attention. Favorite Song(s): Moon Dreams, Budo
I think it’s good/classic in some contexts, but I just don’t feel like jazz holds up well in recordings.
I can't believe an era existed where this was considered the birth of "cool." It sounded like all jazz to me, I couldn't find anything that stood out to differentiate it. I know Davis is a big name but this felt like all the rest. The same backing bass line, the little cymbal tapping, some horns, great. Not really for me. 1.75
For a jazz album I guess it's pretty cool. Better than the slow stuff. Some good back up drums and piano. Miles is an icon that I never listened too...jazz not being my fave and way before my time. I can't really appreciate it for these reasons so I would not be able to argue his place on history. Better than some of the newer stink bomb albums recently on the list...2.13.
Birth Of The Cool is a fine look at a some classic jazz from a bygone era. I can respect Miles Davis and recognize his part in music history, so this album deserves to be on the list, it's just not something that I want to spend any extended time with. There's unquestionably some great trumpet playing on this album, but after a couple songs I don't want to hear any more. This is best served as background music at theme park or elsewhere in small doses. 1.69
There is a lot to like, but I found it a bit boring after a while, perhaps because the trumpet as the lead instrument has a limited octave range.
This kind of jazz always sounds so mischievous
Was aight. Jazz isn't my thing tbh, unless it's played live
Probably would have enjoyed this more if I was sitting in a nightclub where this was being performed live - but I know it is Miles Davis the jazz genius but it all just starts to blur together and I can't recall what I just listened to...
Good jazz hits. Instrumentals.
I really hope not all jazz is like this.
Very jazzy jazz. My brain just won’t.
Quality jazzity jazz! Hard to imagine this not already existing in humanity when it came out. Got a little same-y toward the end.
Not my thing
I didn't hate this jazz
2.5 - it don't dislike it but i would never listen to it in my spare time.
The title would have you assume that cool would be birthed in this album. Unfourantely I didn't hear such a thing. My Favourite track of this album was Rocker with its dilightfully simple and recognisable theme, and somewhat interesting solos, with Rouge coming in a close second. I enjoyed the few drum solos featured, as I am a sucker for any drum solo. The rest of the album seemed a little uninspired with a lack of catchy or recognisable themes, but then again that is not what jazz is known for. The improvasiation was impressive but once again didn't tickle my ear drum in any way (I hope you get a good mental image from this analouge). Overall, kinda mid jazz album imho.
Rated July 27th 2024 Unfortunately this didn't do anything for me. :/
I've never been into jazz; unfortunately, this album did not change my mind about it. 2 stars
Backgroundy Jazz. It's just never going to be my thing, as cool as this is, I don't really see myself choosing to come back and listen to it again.
Это вам не bitches brew и get up with it.
Birth Of The Muzak
2/12, 17%
As for Jazz albums goes, it's cool, but not my scene. Amazing trumpet work.
Too jazzy!!
I don't think I could ever put an album like this above a 2. It's fine, makes great background music whilst I'm doing other things but try as I might I just don't get it
#265. I mostly just skipped through. I simply cannot be bothered to spend any more actual time listening to jazz for this playlist. 2/5: jazz
Classy, impressive So not me, I can’t even I was not born cool
I’m not a jazz fan, but I occasionally like a more moody song than what’s on this album.
Jazz horns
Another album that was technically impressive but just did nothing for me.
Miles Davis is cool but this one ain’t it. Sure, it was 1958 I’m sure this was fucking great because what else was there. Big band is nothing but a big bunch of skilled musicians playing bland, boring music. More doesn’t mean better. This is boring. 2.5 stars
2.5 Not really sure what to say about this one. It’s a jazz album, and it’s not a particularly exciting or interesting one at that. It’s also not even really a studio album as it is more of a collection of songs from early in his career, meaning it doesn’t feel structured in any kind of way, but then again, is any jazz album? Inoffensive to the ears, but not the kind of thing I’d willingly put on again, especially with how lacking in variety it feels. I appreciate him keeping this short, but in listening to this during a drive to the airport, I still found myself bored pretty quickly - it felt like my radio was stuck on NPR or something. I do think Miles is a talented dude, but unfortunately his music just doesn’t speak to me.
This was short and quite pleasant, like listening to the background music to a cartoon from the 50s. It didn't click with me at all and I could happily never listen to it again without feeling I had missed anything.
I suppose this must be Miles just before he went off the deep end into hard-bop, this is surprisingly conventional I think. The voicing of tha band is quite traditional and there are elements of swing and big band music, it sounds like the bridge between wartime jazz and the new era he was about to spearhead. I liked it, though it didn't blow me away, probably will return for further listens.
Sum of dat mufuggin honky Tonky jazz moosic..it was aight
I like some Miles Davis, but this was a bit like background music in a war-time movie.
Parp.
giving this two stars because it made me feel like my atoms were out of place, but not as far out of place as i expected it too, and i found myself bopping along a couple times.
wasn't feeling this when i was listening, sorry mr. davis
Much like all jazz, this is background music
Just not my kind of jazz
I'm not cool enough for Miles Davis. 2/5
I can genuinely appreciate the talent that the musicians on this album have. But…I let it okay out like background music as it didn’t do much for me, personally. If it’s your thing, fill your wellies.
Fella sure can play the trumpet but it's not for me to be honest
Tyylikästä töräyttelyjazzia, mitäs siihen vastaan panemaan.
Like the bold album naming but probs didn't quite live up to the name. Pre kind of blue, post Charlie parker quartet and sounds like a step on the way...
It’s jazz. It’s very good jazz, but it’s not my thing. Rating reflects personal enjoyment, not quality (as always, rating reflects personal enjoyment, not quality) Listens: 1 Fave Track: ? Rating: 2
Kind of Blew
p34. 1957. 2 stars. Jazz, so the wrong audience. Seems well done of its type, though. Unlikely to replay this.
i just dont care about jazz
Mood music
Jazz
I don't like jazz, don't understand the appeal, sounds like background music.
Cool is Miles Davis. Miles Davis is cool. Nevertheless, it’s not my thing.
Wish I liked it more
IF it's possible to think something is great, yet not like it, that's this album for me. I appreciate how good it is, but i don't enjoy it. I think, for me, and the music taste i have, whether people deem it good or bad, this just isn't my cup of tea, i don't like it.
Mr jazz man and your trumpet! Some crazy sounds you have
Pass
Hellre detta, varje dag i veckan, än Sepultura.
This album could've been one song and I would've believed you. Maybe that's on me for being ignorant but there just isn't much here. I think in general a lack of lyrics is going to make any album lesser rated, but even the instrumentation here is just kind of boring and grating. 4/10 (2/5)
I noped out of this one. I don’t like jazz on a good day, and today was not a good day.
I don’t know. It’s jazz. I’m sure it’s great for jazz. If I didn’t know there were 11 songs, I would’ve thought I was listening to one long running song. It just doesn’t do anything for me.
Good background music
Hmmm, was better than some other jazz we've had, slightly more palatable but still not my cup of tea
Background jazz music. Not bad, but did not convince me.
Ya like jazz ?
If I really pay attention, I can start to see why people enjoy it so much. But for casual listening, I don't enjoy it much at all.
Just not that into jazz ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Birth of the Cool I dunno. I’ve tried many many times to listen to and try and understand jazz, but it never sticks. I do like some vocal jazz and piano led stuff, but up tempo with trumpets and sax parping away starts to irritate me pretty quickly. I can however appreciate its importance in the history of 20th century popular music, and the skill and virtuosity of the players. And while there are the elements of it and some songs I enjoy, I just think that I don’t really like jazz and won’t ever really like jazz, and ultimately I think no one really likes jazz, they just decide liking jazz is their personality, and that by liking jazz they have a far more sophisticated understanding of music, and therefore anyone liking any other type of music is a Luddite peasant. With this album though, it’s not too much of a bebop up tempo parp fest, although it does wander into that area quite frequently. I couldn’t really tell many of the songs apart, and it all kind of passed me by quite unremarkably. Although I did like Moon Dreams quite a bit, the slower tempo and less frantic melody was very nice amongst the other songs. I’ll give it a 2, based on 1 for the actual album and the 1 for its influence on 20th century music. I’m glad it exists and I’m glad I listened to it, but it’s not for me ⭐️⭐️
Jazz isn’t my thing. But this wasn’t awful. I could listen in background of an event and not be turned off. But wouldn’t choose it on my own. 2.5
Couldn't hack it
* Two songs in (Move, Jeru) but very funky beats so far. * Moon Dreams feels like it came outta a Noir detective mystery. Somewhat yawn inducing too. * For some reason, Venus De Milo triggered memories of the episode of Tom and Jerry where Tom's performing "You're Still my Baby" and Jerry, who is trying to sleep, keeps bouncing around the place. * Just starting song number six, Deception, but barring Moon Dreams, I find that they all kinda blend together. Feel like it'd be quite easy for me to mistake one song for another if I wasn't paying much attention. * Rocker has got me snapping my fingers... so that's a good sign I suppose. * I like the piano in Rouge around the 0:45 second mark. * Lots of talent but not my style. Bit of a borefest, honestly. -- Album Rankings -- 1. Jeru 2. Boplicity 3. Rocker 4. Godchild 5. Venus De Milo 6. Rouge 7. Darn That Dream 8. Moon Dreams 9. Move 10. Israel 11. Budo 12. Deception
Does nothing for me
given that I don't take historical context or none of the "lore" into account for any of my ratings, this is just boring jazz to me I have to say, the global reviews for this album has some of the most unfunny people I have read the reviews of since starting this
I must be a dumb dumb because I simply do not vibe with jazz. I don't know why. It makes me physically uncomfortable. I respect it but it's just not for me.
It’s just not my jam. Over the years I’ve tried to like jazz. I truly have. I understand the teamwork and musicianship to play jazz. It’s tremendously hard and takes great talent and skill. I simply cannot find a place where it works for me. I need something less intrusive for background music. I need something straightforward and upbeat when I’m moving my body. After the first few bars of the first song, my mind started to wander into creativity-much like Miles Davis. Was it the jazz? No. I do that all the time. The jazz got in the way more than it expanded my thoughts. I guess I can’t sit with the cool kids today.
Overall: Miles is an absolutely brilliant horn player. I really should incorporate more jazz band in my life, so this was a welcomed listen. Only a couple tracks mentioned below really caught my attention or stood out. Having this on low in the background while enjoying my 1st cup of coffee for the day is about the only way I see myself enjoying jazz in general. But in that case, it is quite enjoyable. Track Breakdown: Jeru - really enjoyed the consistent flow of this song, it was a very relaxing listen Rogue - Enjoyed the piano accompaniment on this track
Jaz, not my style
2/5 This music is not my cup of tea.
Have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to this album, ok for background
3rd Miles Davis album.. all have been 2 stars, wase of time
I don't like jazz but he is good at playing a trumpet
Its alright, didnt sound particularly special. Significant 22/56 Liked 9/56 Added 2/56 Y, N, N
If this is the birth of cool I think that it is the birth of the zzzzs
siis nautin 1000 kertaa enemmän musiikista jossa on sanotukset mut tää kyl bängäs silti! oikein hyvää hissimusaa joka oli sellasta ettei tartennu yhtää ajatustakaa pistää sen suuntaan. tho yllättäen alko kyllästyttää vähä jossai vaihees mut oikein etevää työmussaa :)
It was okay to listen to but a bit boring.
Not my kind of jazz.
Misschien gaat dit me toch lukken.
Not a fan of Jazz, heavy for my ears and mind. It is chaotic at the same time light and not in your face, so on the level of annoyingly chaotic for me. With that said, there were some interesting aspects of the compositions and sounds. Really like to catch glimpses of drum parts, mostly.
jazz still goes over the top the last song with a singer is interesting in the end of the album
Nice maar niet mijn ding.
Stressful
Boring - not to my taste
Part of taking this challenge was to listen to albums and genres I wouldn't pick but choice but the more I listen to jazz the more I realise that I will never like it. To my ears this sounds like cheesy background music
I'm not a huge fan of jazz
Miles Davis is 5/5, but this album is not his best. Sorry Miles...
Not a jazz fan, not sure what context I'm missing in which enjoys this music.
Not a jazz fan.
emmm, don't like it
Not my bag I’m afraid. Found it quite repetitive
Yawn, a bunch of arbitrary be-bop jazz tootling over those cliched up'n'down double bass scales and ride cymbal/snare brush-heavy jazz drumming. Nice. Yes, he's a great trumpeter, perhaps some Purcell or military marches might make for better material. Not cool.
48/100
Just jazz
It is cool but all tends to merge into a wallpaper sound of sameness. Sometimes Myles gets some dynamism going but not often enough.
i can appreciate it, but it was a bit boring and repetitive. i would play it in a nice restaurant.
I think this is background music for the waiting room at the dentist.
It’s a jazz album, sorry to jazz but I didn’t get anything out of this.
This is my third Miles Davis album. Even though this is as good as the others, I give a vote towards the spirit of “before you die.” In my opinion, we could find 1-2 different albums and someone on their death bed doesn’t need to waste their time after Kind of Blue or Bitches Brew.
I'm not smart enough for this
TIL I'm not cool
Skilled musician, but not my thing
Alright some more jazz! We just recently rewatched LaLa Land. It's cool how much he loved jazz in that movie. It will help me get through the last hour of work. Nice! I liked it but prolly only a 2.
I mean I can’t hate what I can’t understand
Jazz
Well, it's nice to listen to but not something I would do regularly
Four albums by this fucker, my arch-nemesis, and this is the first one that I would call even barely listenable. I don't get it. I know that he's probably in the top 3 most influential musicians of all time, but my brain rejects his music. This is strictly a Charles Mingus and John Coltrane household.
Jazz is not my ☕ of 🫖
Mijn mening over jazz blijft hetzelfde.
couldnt finish the album i was so bored
