Reviews (page 11 of 13)
At this point in time I appreciate the musicianship but I don't like jazz at all.
sämre version av kind of blue
Good but not my thing
A truly pleasant album. Nothing more nothing less
Good background music. Awesome album name.
Noodly jazz meant for a reflective city day
I’m sorry don’t hate me. I think I only like slow jazz
Decent album. Nothing really groundbreaking but a nice listening still. Perfect to listen to while walking at night
Groovy, not really my style but still enjoyed it. It was ok. (72%)
truly is Cool Jazz which unfortunately isn't the most interesting music to me, but i mean. it is jazz. if you like some Cool Jazz then yeah miles davis has you covered but i like his fusion stuff much more
It was a fine album, but felt like background music. I was busy, so will need to give this another listen
Jazz is jazz
Familiar with the album. Not typically my choice for daily listening. Solid album, but not my favorite Miles Davis album.
is good but nothing near the miles Davis greats
I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated by others, but not my cup of tea. Too disharmonious for my untrained ears.
Listened to most of it. Not my favorite Miles Davis album and I just don’t think it compares to his best.
all songs are instrumentals but I don't mind this style of music 1. Move - it had a quick feel to it 2. Jeru - this one is a little slower 3. Moon Dreams - this one reminds me of a move, cinematic feel and ominous feel 4. Venus de Milo - this one was a little more upbeat and happier 5. Budo - even faster, feels fun and frantic 6. Deception - i like the name of this one it feels like it fits the music 7. Godchild - didn't have many thoughts 8. Boplicity - 9. Rocker - 10. Israel - 11. Rouge - honestly, jazz is ok in small doses but for me a whole album gets a little boring
This is a conversation in a language I don’t know, but it sounds pretty chirpy, and I let it play three times. I tend to prefer jazz stuff that’s less on the rails.
Pleasant enough I suppose, didn't really blow me away but also was completely inoffensive.
Iha jees!
Good bebop
2.5, just music you do a task or homework with or something.
Solid listen
Like MD but prefer the loosed extended jams where keyboards and guitar became integral to the sound....this is solid though.
3/5 Best: Boplicity Worst: Deception
Not a huge Jazz fan but I liked this album.
I enjoyed the album and 50s era Jazz in general. Didn't realize this was a compilation record. Repetitive in spots
Cool jazz.Correcto.
I didn’t really have strong feelings about this. I feel like 2 is a bit harsh but this is definitely somewhere between a 2 and 3.
Thanks for inventing cool Mr. Miles
- Great background jazz - Makes me feel like I'm playing Fallout
- very talented trumpeter - not something I’d listen to often but good vibes
I can appreciate it but
In 1957, Miles Davis invented cool. We were all better off for it. It's jazz! It sure is jazz. It's not Miles at his full potential, that's also for sure. It's... a compilation, too. Gross. I get wanting early Miles, but you could do so, so, so much better in capturing his early-1950s sound. Goes down easy, though. Wait, was this only included because it appeared on The Simpsons? Was Lisa Simpson part of the selection team? An inconsistently consistent 3/5.
This is a style of jazz I can get behind. The arrangements are…well they exist for one thing. The different instruments play melodies in unison. A welcome change from much of the other jazz we’ve heard.
3.4 kewl faves: move, moon dreams
Many miles to go.
sure, but it had some growing up to do
I'm not a big fan of freeform jazz, but Davis makes it palatable.
Pretty cool funky jazz stuff. Not anything I would regularly listen to.
Calming and classic
3.5
Jazz, not my style
It’s fine. It’s not my jam. I bet jazz people frickin adore it.
Another “classic for a reason”. But not the Miles I’m really in to.
Not fair to rate in any objective way as it’s not a form of music I take to.
a 1949 compilation, not his best in my opinion
Cool Album. The tone reminds me of David Bowie I like a lot if the songs. Favourite could be Mask?
Great to listen to a Miles Davis album that's not either Kind of Blue or Sketches of Spain! Don't think I'd heard this one, besides maybe Boplicity for some jazz combo I was in a long time ago. Miles' playing is awesome as usual, but always what I like the most about his music is the arrangements and compositions. There's an interesting angularity and modal sound to Miles Davis' lines; even before he recorded Kind of Blue you can hear the jagged 4thsy shapes of the horn parts start to assume their nascent forms. Really heard it on Moon Dreams. Great lines where the top note stays floating above the inner voices as they split off, outlining unexpected chord extensions and coming in and out of abstract pad textures, suddenly finding purchase on a musical landing pad that you didn't see until you were right on it. I feel like this album sits right between Miles' bebop roots and the modal, cloudy dark blue sound that came to define not only him but jazz as a whole from the 1960s onwards. Pretty enjoyable listen, with a few moments that really grabbed my attention because of the horn arrangements and harmony.
Miles, let’s go! I’m not nearly literate enough in Jazz to know what it is I’m hearing here, but to me it sounds free-wheeling, really tight horn parts, an extremely accomplished band that’s clearly played a lot together. This is not Kind of Blue, which I now grok, and it’s not Sketches of Spain, which is an unqualified masterpiece and a sleeper hit for me personally. I’m definitely gonna put this on more and see if I can get deeper into it. Good album, great morning listen, 3/5
Groovy and bouncey. Bass and drums really keep things moving. Solid background music
It’s smooth I’ll give it that, but I’m no Howard Moon and this overall does so little for me
Very cool, very jazz
Very harmonizing band with a virtuoso Miles. However, many pieces are too traditional to be really "cool". Some pearls like "Moon Dreams" and "Godchild" make the album stand out, though. It's just a pity that the recording technology wasn't better back then.
Just a full album of ambient jazz. Not bad but not really my thing Saved tracks: Jeru, Rouge
I wanted to really dig this album, but it fell flat for me. The recording was not as dynamic as I would have liked. 3/5
It was ok ,
I always find it tricky to review jazz - improvisation plays an important role, and so jazz albums don't really do the music justice. This album was pretty fine, but I would say that I liked it - I was on a Thelonious Monk album before I knew it, and I preferred that. Made me stop and check the track name. Thelonious made me stop and check the track name.
While I can appreciate Jazz I'm just not that into the genre. I found this to be interesting and "cool" but it was basically just background music. Maybe I'd have enjoyed it more if I really concentrated on it. The 12 tracks flyby so I could easily listen to it again.
Great to listen to in the background and Spotify had taken me onto more jazz without me realising. However, jazz isn't really my thing. Might go be back for something to listen to while working I can appreciate that it's probably pretty good
Masterful but I really dont like jazz.
no amo tanto este tipo d música
Pretty basic cool jazz, but Miles has that ability to garner great talent and have them perform at a high level. That’s what this record is. Top notch playing. Just not extremely interesting.
I liked it better then Bitch's brew. Better then most of the jazz albums we've listened to.
This is one of the higher jazz ratings I think I'll give. I liked some of it, I enjoyed the in and out of the song length, and I liked the nostalgia that it brought of listening to this with my grandfather. All that said, I can't ever see putting it on again for no reason.
The album is no doubt a jazz album and while listening it gives a busy cafe in Europe vibes. The album have a variety of songs that change the tempo and mood but in the end sound similar due to the use of same instruments throughout the album. Nothing spectacular to listen to the album for the music but would be great when you want to create a mood in a restaurant, cafe or a bar.
Very early stuff. Sounds like a lot of other people of the era.
It's Miles Davis. What's not to like? While not one of his best, it's still fairly enjoyable.
I'm very clever I like jazz man
Smooth as silk
i never feel as though i’m truly appreciating jazz
Not as transformative as Kind of Blue even though it was - quite literally - the birth of cool jazz. I appreciated the effortless hand-offs within the nonet. And that’s the first time that phrase has been uttered in the English language.
This is pretty standard Miles. Almost like as if it his 5th best album. Still smooth and cool listening.
Not a difficult listen, mostly very melodic and swinging. Still not really what I'm into but I appreciate the craft. WELCOME SUKI
For some reason I'm reminded of Looney Tunes. I liked Boplicity and Rocker lot. The last song was... off-putting.
Pretty good album. Wish it had some singing. 3/4/23
Jazz
Good, but not gonna be something I listen to regularly
Starts of very dance night at the us army officer's club with some pretty dames with swell gams, it's a step up from boogie woogie bugle boy from company B but doesn't have the same feel to Davis's later works. Then a few songs in it smooths out and we hear some good tracks with Moon Dream and Venus de Milo, nothing amazing but a nice listen.
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
Finally, a Miles Davis album that is much more accessible than "Bitches Brew", although that is not a particularly a high bar to cross. "Birth of the Cool" reminded me of all the 80s and 90s sitcoms, with jazz intros or jingles in-between the scenes. Something that is not too distracting, but entertaining, classy and with some (a little) spice to it. It's probably blasphemous for real jazz fans, but I felt like sitting in a hotel lounge when listening to this album - relaxing, easy to follow, smooth. And that is what I think - it was a pretty nice listening session, track after track were flowing, nothing really caught my attention, for the better or worse. Perfect record for a chilled dinner with partner or friends.
Miles Davis has always been one step ahead of everyone else. I like his influence, but I don't like his music as much. Newer music wouldn't be the same without him. I only know a couple of his records. I hadn't heard this one before. I like it better than the newer ones I know. Favorite song: Venus de Milo.
I mean it’s fine. It’s just trumpet jazz music. It’s pretty sounding but pretty boring.Nothing super grabbing.it’s ok.
I'm not sure how arsed I am about this kind of Jazz. I know I really liked Kind of Blue, bounced off Bitches Brew when I tried them both 10-15 years ago, but I didn't go to this. Be interested to see how I react to Brew with several years more musical maturity. Anyway, this is enjoyable but I'm not really picking up enough variation to keep me massively interested.

Very enjoyable, even if I still don't quite understand all the nuances of the genre. That's a me problem, not a Miles problem, and one of the many reasons I am delighted to be doing this!
always loved his music, but just recently learned what a POS he apparently was to his wifes and gfs. no approved! one star will be removed due to this.
quite short much instrumental jazzy
This didn't make a large impact on me, though it was as enjoyable as any Miles album, there are some I am much more fond of.
Jazz innit
Tästä tykkään! 1950 luvulla hölmöjä ihmisiä.. tälläsellä saa ne viihdyettyä...
Waarschijnlijk niet verkeerd, maar niet mijn ding.
A fine album, nothing special when taken at face value, but cool to think that this was the emergence of a new genre of jazz that was more subdued than bebop. Kind of Blue is much more memorable, but this was fine. Three stars.
I liked a lot of the upbeat happier songs. Some of the slow stuff was hard for me to enjoy at work.
Jazzy
Not my music style
Good for Christmas
Jazz alegre.
Decent
Cool jazz.Correcto.
I’m not a jazz lover but I liked this more than I thought I would. Wasn’t as “freeform” as I expected.
So Miles Davis must have been a marketing genius. Titling a jazz album in 1957 "The Birth of Cool." I have a hard time seeing it. "I don't care what you say pops, I like this relaxing dinner music and you can't make me stop listening to it!" "Hey daddyo, can you dig smooth jazz? This is the coolest!" "Naw man, put away that Elvis and the Beatles, check out the mellow wordless magic of Miles Davis!" And then these songs have these super-cool titles, like "Deception," "Boplicity," "Rogue." Oh wait, it's "Rouge." That might even be cooler. But I don't know, something about feeling my nerves calmed and my stomach craving some pasta and white wine doesn't ring so cool that it this music must be the origin of all coolness. Shame, Miles Davis, SHAME!
2.5
Miles davis goed
It's pleasant enough for background. I just tend to not really "get" jazz for the most part. I certainly didn't hate it but would never listen for pleasure.
Decent Jazz album that probably revolutionized music at the time. Unfortunately, it now sounds old and done-over. I feel like there are better Miles Davis albums as well. Best Songs: NA Worst Songs: NA
Great Jazz, just not the kind I would listen to in my spare time.
Classic for Jazz Lovers, just pleasant music for me.
Jazz isn't normally something I seek out, but I do enjoy it as background music while attending to other tasks, and I found this album, instrumental save for the last track, really good for that purpose.
Jazz is tough for me to rate because it all starts to meld together. The album ended and I wasn't even sure how many tracks I made it through. Wasn't unpleasant though.
Blues clues
Ya like Jazz???
Obviously it's Miles Davis, but again, I don't remember most of what I heard. I know I liked it, but this one is gonna take a few more listens for me to fully appreciate I think.
Pretty good but not miles Davis' best jazz
King of cool jazz baby
The bebop jazz crossover to makes it easier to digest when you hear it for the first time. It's just so many notes....
I enjoyed this one. I feel there are more definitive albums to listen to when it comes to jazz (I could be wrong about this). Regardless this was a very enjoyable listen.
I learned from Wikipedia that this is a compilation album of Miles Davis tracks recorded in 1949-50. I also learned that "the music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical music techniques such as polyphony, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title suggests, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz." So it's important, and I tried really hard to listen for the new things they were doing. But the only jazz I know well is swing so probably I should have listened to some Dizzy Gillespie first or something. As a jazz philistine, I can at least say that there is nothing I dislike about this album. But it didn't move me. It sounded like the type of thing I would have played at a dinner party in my early 20s to make myself appear grownup and sophisticated. If I'm really being honest, I have an unpopular belief that most people only listen to jazz to make themselves appear grownup and sophisticated. This is a great album for that.

I know this type of album (jazz, without much of a "hook" in its songs) takes time to grow on you. I've listened to this twice, plan to listen to it more, and very much suspect it will grow on me. That said, for consistency with the other albums, I need to rate it based on my initial impressions alone; this is just the limitation of this 1001-albums format. From that perspective, while the songs are all pleasant, very few sparked my interest. Jazz is great, but I prefer a little more upbeat. I'd prefer anything by Ed Palermo or Gil Scott-Heron over this. Not as bad as Nico's Chelsea Girl (my reference point for a 2), so I'll go 3.
Technical master but trumpet might not be my thing
Slick classic jazz.
First time listening to a jazz album. I think I like jazz a lot more than I thought I did.
I first listened to the CD version of the album and thought it was pretty good - definitely 'cool'. Then Darn that Dream started and I thought how much that song just didn't fit in with the rest of the album. It's a great old classic from the 1940s - I know it well. It just didn't seem to flow along with the rest of the album. THEN I looked at the Wikipedia page and saw that It wasn't part of the original album. I never know which version of the album is the one that we "must listen to", but in this case, I'll stick with the original version without Darn That Dream. Very cool, smooth and funky jazz. yeah, baby, I dig it... 3/5
Jazz is an acquired taste, and I have not yet acquired it. I can appreciate the musicianship and I know that everything their doing is amazing, but I feel like listening to this album is like trying to read an advanced theoretical physics textbook. It's real smart and cool, but I don't even know wtf is happening.
Jazz not my jam. Having said that, themes presented in this album are easy to digest.
It sure was a jazz album! While this is certainly a musically competent record, I was expecting something more “Miles Davis-y”? I didn’t really feel anything outside of “Moon Dreams”. But for 1957 this is good.
Not the greatest jazz but decent.
If peeing your pants is cool...
Old-school Miles Davis, it's good. Does raise questions for me about the scope of this list - should straight classical albums have a place on it too?
There are a few musical artists that are able to capture the zeitgeist of the moment and chart new territory with their vision, radically changing their style over the decades and also changing music, art and fashion at the same time. I would put Miles in this category, along with Neil Young and David Bowie. Every time they changed their style listeners would be challenged but after other groups follow their lead, time would show that they were bleeding edge and way ahead of their time. Over 5 decades Miles would go from Big Band to Be-bop, to Cool, to Modal to Electric rock fusion. This album is basically a collection of material he did in the late 40s and shows his transition to Cool. Although it's a solid album, my favourite works by him were yet to come in his Modal period.
My least favorite Miles Davis album.
Really great musicianship. Didn't catch my ear though, probably down to not really understanding or knowing much about the era to fully appreciate it
Sehr gutes Jazz Album
I really disliked my last Miles Davis album but found this much more mellow and enjoyable. Still not what I’m into but a much smoother ride than Bitches Brew.
a bit too simplistic
This is really solid and maybe would have been a 4 or 5 with anyone else but I feel that, with the hindsight of what Davis would go on to do, it's a little underwhelming. It's a good listen and clearly very influential but just doesn't have the same emotional impact as his modal jazz period or the intrigue of his more experimental later work
Just not the biggest fan of jazz. Miles is a legend but it can’t hold my attention. Faded in to background music almost immediately.
Iconic LP cover and great title. My jazz knowledge is not enough to understand the impact or influence of this album over others of its era. It’s pleasant enough, but not special enough. Late 1950s Miles onwards for me.
not my shpeed
Would like to enjoy more jazz.
Classic jazz, mostly instrumental except the vocals on the final track.
Good jazz
Perfect Sunday evening vibe ahead of a busy week.
Jazz like this continues to definitely not be my thing, but this is sooooo smooth. Miles Davis made playing the trumpet sound like the easiest thing in the world; he was truly a master!
It certainly is cool. I didn't look at any track names, but that final track feels so out of place.
Nice trumpet. But... y'know... it's just... trumpet. Whilst trumpet can convey the three main emotions (happy, sad, and meepy), it struggles to get more complex ideas, philosophies or stories across. This is no doubt a great example of what it is, but what it is only has limited appeal for me. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Moon Dreams Date listened: 05/05/22
sounds like jazz to me
A little less experimental than the later David I’ve heard.
Historic, groundbreaking, and... kind of boring.
This is sneaky. I spent the first half doing something while listening and thought it was just ok. Unemotional, smoove jaz. But this kind of music rewards attention. Way better if you focus on it. Also worth noting: this sounds like normal 70s-2010s jazz mostly because this comes before all those biters.
Can’t get into it 🤷♂️. Give it 3 stars though so as not to seem racist.
😎 🎺
Made me feel uneasy, but I'm not sure if it was because I was feeling uneasy anyway.
Not really getting it
I like jazz, but this did not go well for me. I guess I need to listen more times to it. A decent album nonetheless. Miles Davis has better stuff in his catalogue.
Cool instrumental album. The jazz was really easy to listen to and a refreshing change
Not my genre, but appreciate the great playing.
You can tell this is really good jazz, but it still eventually ends of feeling like "listening to jazz"
There's no doubt Miles Davis had profound affect on Jazz, and this is a fine showcase of his undoubted skills. I'm just not into it.
Not my thing at all, but nice to listen to.
I like these old jazz albums a lot as background music and should probably try and more attention to the arrangements but I feel like a piano makes a big difference in jazz for me.
3.4 - seemingly straightforward jazz, with a bit of a big band feel. Timing is right and improvisation is obviously limited, but definitely a nice album to have in the background on a slow Sunday afternoon.
Laid back, generally cheerful, cool-ass blues. Martinis all round.
Some nice jazz that was much much better than bitches brew
Not as good as In a Silent Way
3/5
The oldest album I have received on this list so far (first album from the 1950s in general), but it definitely did not feel dated in the slightest. I enjoyed this one for what it was: a very solid jazz record that establishes a specific mood right off the bat and just feels cool to listen to. I am not too familiar with Miles Davis or the genre in general, but I can tell that he is a fantastic trumpet player and songwriter based on this album alone. I liked the fact that the tracks were shorter lengths compared to what jazz is typically known for; this allowed for tight compositions and a nice quick pace throughout the entire album. This one is hard to give a rating to since I really have nothing to compare it to, but I could see myself throwing this on in the background again as a light listen. 3/5.
This always sounded like a brass band playing jazz to me. Listening to it repeatedly didn't change my mind. I think it's the french horn, it just doesn't belong. Sounds like it could break out into the theme from Johnny Briggs any second. More reeds please. Yes it's seminal and everything that Miles Davis did needs to be listened to, but not a great album for me.
Yes, this is jazz. It does the tootling and the swinging and it's quite okay actually. Bit on the polite side. Feels cool to have on in the background but it's not particularly blowing (ha) me away. 6/10
Pretty chill vibes, good music for a date night or chilling at home on the couch
A decent jazz album
Not a jazz guy but it’s clearly good.
This is my favorite Miles Davis album. But I still only have so much patience for it.
Not bad, nice jazz music but not really my type of music. Maybe might come back to it.
Good vibes. Fucking crazy amount of players
Very good at what it does, just not for me
Nice to hear but fails to be more than classical background music for my ears
Some fine compositions, great musicianship. Perfectly digestible.
Very cool - really enjoyed
Not my favorite Miles Davis album, but that doesn't really mean much. I'm ranking this a three, but it's a pretty high three. If I rounded up my scores, it would be a four, but I don't.
I don't understand jazz well enough to know what is great and what is bad. I know music theory (to a limited degree) and it clearly sounds nice. But I don't know what makes this great compared to other jazz which sounds similar. I get the later, out there, stuff a bit more. This just sounds like very nice music you put on to appear sophisticated. It's very mellow. I went away and did some reading and get why it's important now. Introduced polyphony to jazz, and chilled it out some. I'm up to Moon Dreams, and there's a very nice descending run which is the first distinctive bit of the album. I finished it. It is pleasant all the way through. A nice surprise at the end when you get vocals all of a sudden. I still don't 'get' this sort of more trad jazz, it all just seems very nice, but fails to excite me.
Miles always delivers - a solid jazz album, not entirely memorable but makes for a good listen
Miles is THE MAN. These early uptempo swing numbers are musical as anything, but they just don't give me the same feels as where he took his music shortly after. I've always found a swing shuffle beat to be a pretty corny sound and, besides a few tracks here, it's just all over this album. Can't hold it against Miles though, as he went on to create one musical masterpiece after another. Glad to have listened to this again after many years.
The recording quality on this is the best but i will give it some slack being 60+ years ago. Not having the best jazz ear, I don't know that I would be able to pick a song in here that I latched onto. Though I do like jazz and miles davis.
Enjoyable - Never listened to him before
Great music to drink wine and fuck to. I can't help but separate cool jazz / post-bop / whatever, from eating dinner at Vito's and leering at the waitstaff. Solid instrumentation, some generally interesting stuff going on, though doesn't grab my attention as much as other albums/tracks Miles Davis.
Super cool, super smooth. A few tracks I couldn't connect with. Best track: Jeru
Very nice indeed
A solid jazzy album. 0RS
It's a classic but not something I would regularly put on myself. I tend to prefer other Blue Note records from the period.
Cool jazz has never been my cup of tea, and this doesn't change that fact. It is, however, strikingly cohesive for a compilation, and the first half's sequencing hits especially hard. Move sounds completely boppy, but also like it's being pushed through something viscous. The slowing-down continues through the third track, and then Budo presents an aural challenge again but with tone instead of speed. The compositions are fairly straightforward temporally, but the nonet format gives lots of interesting texture variation. The drums come across as especially dynamic.
Good.
This is pretty primordial compared to the later Davis stuff that I like, but you can't really go wrong with it.
This was alright, one of those albums that's far too old to really judge. But I did tap my foot a bit. Very old timey, 3/5.
music to sample to make lo-fi beats to study to
So smooth.
Sadly don't have too much of an ear for such music. I'd love to give this a 4, but that'd feel a bit dishonest. Did enjoy it though.
Very jazzy, like the most jazzy ive ever listened to i think. Not really what i like, but nice to finally have a listen.
Going by the wiki description I was expecting something more laid back than this, but fairly enjoyable stuff for a jazz noob like me. The songs are short, some almost too short to leave a lasing impression, but there were some nice vibes.
Smoking room kinda jazz, I dug it, not sure if I would listen again but it was enjoyable
Shades of Blue is better imo
good background music
Legendary jazz. This was a good offering
A must-listen for Jazz beginners. I’m not huge on the cool / hard bop style but this album is still a great collection of tracks. Favorite Track : Venus De Milo Least Favorite Track : Boplicity

Different. Good.
I never get that much pleasure from Birth of the Cool or Kind of Blue, compared the 1960s Miles albums, or even many of his 1950s albums. Both albums are obviously landmarks in jazz, but they're not particular favourites of mine. It's been a few years since I last heard this one. Some stellar playing and you can hear the new era in jazz coming directly in bebop's wake here. The one vocal track at the end always made this feel even less like a "proper album", so I'm enjoying the 2003 mono remaster that takes this track back off. Overall, I'm grateful it happened and had the effect it had... but it's an unexcited 3/5 from me. I'd go to 3.5 if halves were allowed.
Didn’t strike me in the way some of his other albums have, but will go back to it again
Love this album…. Great listening
The jazz basics. Important but not unmissable.
Fun and fast for the most part, like all my favorite jazz. Makes me miss Colin's shows.
A good album, but far from what I consider the best of Miles Davis (which really is "best").
Listened three times but couldn't quite get my attention grabbed on it. Did feel like one long jazzy sesh so it defies what I'm used to. However, that's a good thing about it, because it's kind of chill and I can focus on work while listening. Solid trumpet playing leads the melodies, and I can't say no to smooth double bass. Great stuff but there's not too much there in it for me.
FUCK YES tammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 6/10
classic trumpet jazz
„The Birth of the Cool“ so direkt freigestellt zu bekommen! 3,4 Sterne.
There's no doubt Miles Davis had profound affect on Jazz, and this is a fine showcase of his undoubted skills. I'm just not into it.
Not my favorite Miles.
good but old fasioned
Solid album, bet given my newness to Jazz, i can't figure out what to love or hate about it. A fine listen.
Relaxing listen.
I feel bad about this because I know Miles Davis is an innovator and one of the all-time greats who was ahead of his time, but the music on this just doesn't do it for me. I just don't feel it. I'm giving it 3 stars out of respect.
was ok
Love trumpet, but this isn't my fave style
smoooooth. cooler than the cool side of the pillow
super cool, bud
Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 13/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 12/20 =52 yeah lovely stuff. Not bangerific but that's fine.
I think I may intrinsically lack the sophistication to get jazz. Boodily beedily beedily boodily boopidy boodily doodily deedily beedily boodily deedily doodily do.
Good mix of cool jazz. Short album. A pleasant listen.
I liked it essentially - but too much brass music
3.5
Go miles
jazz is not for me
Of course miles davis albums should be on this list.
Miles 'boomer' Davis
-Jazz af -Easy to listen to -Brought a coding ephifany
There are better albums by Miles Davis, this one was lackluster.
fun jazz album, but im not the biggest jazz head
Way too much trumpet for me. I felt like I was listening to skits supporting a sitcom from yesteryear. Technically, I'm sure this is impressive, but if a guitarist started soloing from the beginning to the end of song, it would be awful. I get the same vibe here.
Not my kind of music I think. Nice background sound.
Why can't they just play the right notes?
I think I just accidentally listened to the same song 10 times in a row.
That’s it… Jazz isn’t for me, i guess. At least purely instrumental jazz. Yes, Davis is an incredibly talented musician. And yes, his music was probably revolutionary back when it was released. But nothing here grips or excites me. It’s nice to put on as background music, but whenever i tried to actively listen to it, my attention would just slip away. So what do i do with this? There are one or two jazz records that i enjoyed more from the list, or at least albums that gripped my attention. I guess compared to them, this is only a two for me.
There's some good ones on here, but man are there some snoozers. A few tracks on here felt like I was watching one of those 1950s PSAs that explained puberty and dating to 15 year olds. I had another Miles Davis album last week, In A Silent Way, that knocked my socks off. I feel like the shorter song length didn't give the artists enough time to spread their legs and explore.
I normally enjoy high-tempo rock and punk music, which in a sense could be seen as the opposite of this. I have also tried to listen to jazz before, but it has never stuck. I know that Miles Davis is a legend, and the thing with this album is that the high tempo actually fits my taste a lot better than the slower ones I may have been listening to earlier.
as a musician, always heard about how talented and revered jazz musicians are. but let's be frank, this shit is boring. Yea they can noodle for days over complex chord progressions, but where's the hook, the melody, the harmony, or anything memorable? Snoozefest.
Fine but not my thing
I guess I'm not cool. I see my lack of enthusiasm for modern jazz as something of a failure of taste on my part. I like Dixieland, swing and some bebop but refuse modern jazz except where fused with hip hop.
Great musicians. Still not a jazz fan
Situational. Time and place. Tilling a garden, maybe not one of them hahah.
Not for me
Stefnulaus jazz, finnst mér.
Boring
beautiful but not for me.
It sounded good. But it did not move me.
It's nice to have on in the background but most jazz just leaves me really cold.
It was a fun listen, definitely not the genre I usually listen to. Jazz always has a lot of emotion and it's hard to dislike it, but I do find it a bit boring and not quite for my taste.
If you like jazz this is for you
I come to The Birth of the Cool with all the baggage of someone whose idea of jazz has been irreversibly warped by The Fast Show (“Nice!”) and, frankly, that’s probably half the problem. I still struggle to feel the appeal in the way devotees clearly do. That said, this is about as painless — even pleasant — as jazz has been for me. What helps is the calmness and structure. Rather than showboating chaos or musicians disappearing up their own solos, these tracks feel arranged, considered, and (crucially) tuneful. There are actual melodies you can hum, and the ensemble playing gives it a softness and balance that stops it tipping into self-indulgence. It’s undeniably stylish and historically important, and I can appreciate its relaxed, late-night sophistication even if it doesn’t exactly stir my soul. I wouldn’t put it on for fun, but I also wouldn’t flee the room — which, for jazz, is genuine progress
jazzy jazz jazz
All instrumental, not my thing!
Not a fan of jazz
Just another jazz piece with saxophone.
Heard of it before but hadn’t heard it. Interesting.
Nicht gehortt
I mean I guess it's pretty cool?
Its fine I guess. As Barry B Benson has asked "You like Jazz?" And the answer is no. But La La Land is still dope.
I'm a lyrics type of gal. Instrumentals don't really satisfy me so this album really had a hard time convincing me. I like a lot of swing-inspired modern songs so I thought I'd like it a lot more than I did. It feels very simplistic to me. I went in completely blind not knowing anything about it. I'm glad I tried something new, but it didn't land for me. Especially the song called Israel, that I skipped, but it already lost me by then.
Not cool enough
parecía música de restaurant caro no mí tipo de música
I can’t help it. I really don’t enjoy this the way I wish I did.
Not the biggest fan of this one, i enjoy more of his stuff after this album.
