Reviews (page 7 of 14)
A stonecold classic. Don't know why I had not listened to this album for so long.
Ah fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck yyyyeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I can see why it's so well regarded.
Already have this, banger, truly an amazing album
Loved it rate ablum
Never before has a band name fit the sound they have with such accuracy. And man, what a sound it is. Tom is one of the most creative guitarists out there, and Zach is a monster of a frontman. Absolutely excellent.
RATM is in my opinion the ultimate protest music. There is sonic strength, powerful lyrics, and aggressive performance that equal a steady groove filled with, well, RAGE.
Another formative album. It still holds up and I think even coming to it new it would be highly rated.
This is pure energy. John Lydon once sang "Anger is an energy," and this is proof of it right here. Hard to believe this is over 20 years old, and so little has changed. I did not buy this album when it was first released, but when I did WOW. Just an amazing piece of work telling the Man to go f**k himself. It's a hard one to listen to when my kid is in the car, I'll tell you that. But it is an important piece of musical history, and definitely worth all 5 stars.
Slappa da bass
I remember Nick having this tape and the cover art of the burning guy. I remember not even knowing what the image was, just looked like a bunch of scribbles to me. And the music was scary, specifically "freedom." Reminded me of Derek's cd's, like metallica, pantera, and gwar. Obviously this is a great album, but its message has changed drastically to me these days.
The good ol Rage Against The Machine. Such a defining album with all the raw emotion put into this album. Classics like "Killing in the Name" was from this album.
Maybe 5 stars would have been meer appropriate - definitely 5 star in 1993 - but now listening to it in one go.. ..it is a bit exhaustive, oh wait, let me just give 5 star anyway..
Played this album a lot back in the early nineties, and it turns out it still sounds amazing today.
Some bands have a debut album that can't be topped. Rage Against The Machine is one of them. It's full of passion, aggression, relevance and activism. Everything screams of urgence from the album cover to the music, vocal and lyrics.
Enough Said
A vitriolic metal masterpiece.
Haven’t been in a RATM mood for sometime. I know this album well though, always an enjoyable experience when I’m feeling pissed off
This album went hard!!! I can see why this is a classic. Not a single boring song in this album, listened to it without skipping once.
Of course this album is still relevant some 20 years later. ZDL may have gone of the deep end, but I still listen to this album pretty regularly and may of course still blast 'Killing in the Name' when I'm in a mood. 4.5/5
My favourite album from my favourite band. Every song on here is great, with a few that stand out even further. One of the only albums that I would rate a 6/5 if I could do so.
So many classics and a few I’d forgotten about
Rage against the machine int it
Awesome
One of my personal favorite albums of all-time. Never gets old.
Cela me rappelle tellement de souvenir. J’adore cet album. 5/5
Bomba. Qué digo bomba, recontra bomba.
RAGE
I have always loved Rage Against the Machine.
What can I even say? A hugely important album for the development of my musical taste.
This album is a freaking game changer. Loved it.
RATM nothing more to say.
Powerful! Maybe more relevant now than when it first came out. Also maybe one of the best album covers ever.
One of the best albums ever made. It stands the test of time.
LEGEND STATUS This album has it all - riffs, thoughtful lyrics, grooves, and a unique flavor.
One of my favs
This is so great and still feels fresh. There were many bands copying this style but no one pulls it off like them. What a debut
An incredibly powerful album that starts strong and never lets up. One of my all time favourites - a classic
:) you know what this.
Combining rap/rock is no easy task but Rage Against the Machine executes it as no others have on their debut album.
Incredible
What more is there to say, the BEST high-energy album out there. If you listen to this while walking and don't increase your 3x something is wrong with you. Lyrics (which use a lot of phrases now used by the worst people in the world I will admit) are relevant as always.
Best album!
I've never been a RATM fan. But fuck what an record. Like you really feel how special it was and continues to be. You can argue a lot about what belongs on a list like this, but without any doubt RATM hast to be on it.
🤘🏻
Still as good as the day it came out 🙌🏻
🤘🏻
Classic album
fireee!
Amazing!
Down with it
5 stars, would repeat
A solid collection of Rage's finest gems, including some of my personal favorites such as "Know Your Enemy" (featuring Maynard of Tool fame), "Fistful of Steel," and "Township Rebellion." Banger after banger on this one and it is no doubt why this is considered to be their best record overall, especially for being a pivotal record in the fusion of hip-hop and rock with a heavy edge, which other alternative and nu metal acts would eventually try later in the decade.
Love this album, an album from my youth
Now I'm listening to you 1001albumsgenerator 8-)
Iconic album
Pure energy
Rage it the best! One of the best albums ever made.
Yessss!!!!! One of my favorite bands/sounds/albums of all time. Kicks you in the balls and you still want more.
This is a great album. So much anger, but the music is just amazing.
Still fresh after nearly 3 decades
Fantastic album, my favorite of rage’s
Dope
Bängeri Kova sana
Great tracks from beginning to end
Slaps
Love RATM been a fan since I was 10 years old and this classic album reminds me why I am!!
Hands down one of the best albums of the era !!!!
One of the best albums of all time. I don't know if I can think of an album that shows so much passion and pain.
Back to the heavy mental 🤘🏻
Every single song slaps, it’s no doubt a 5/5
A great protest, hard album. Every song means something, there are no bad takes and every member rules. Roche’s vocals rule and Tom morello is one of the coolest guitarists of all time. Amazing stuff
Bekannt. Hat nichts an Aktualität verloren. Außerdem auch vom Sound her zeitlos. 5
The roulette ball, rolls along on the wheel..
great album!
epic.
Fuck yeah!
A perfect album
ayooooo
Already in my collection. Great album and Morello is a stud on guitar.
Classic Rage, awesome.
It’s a classic for a reason! It’s not often someone comes along with something to say like de la Roche did. Through in some innovative guitar techniques and turn the energy level up to 11 and you’ve got an album that still holds up 25+ years later.
4.5/5. Hardcore, political, aggressive, love it. Zack De La Rocha comes with killer hooks that make you want to burn the city down. Standout Tracks: Killing In The Name, Settle For Nothing, Bullet In The Head, Wake Up, Fistful Of Steel
Rage Against the Machine set the bar for themselves so high in 1992 that it's become not only hard for reach, it it outright insurmountable. The fact that they've remained relevant for thirty plus years, for all the right and wrong reasons, is a testament to the sheer power of their oevure and their eponymous debut packs a punch so vicious, so reverberating that all senses are radically rearranged. A manifesto set to music, this will always be a collection that speaks to the perilousness of dark times that looms large, that speaks truth to power, that puts its finger on the trigger.
Now we're back in my wheelhouse. Outstanding record. Standouts: Bombtrack, Killing in the Name, Take the Power Back, Wake Up
Favourite Songs: Killing In The Name Settle For Nothing
One of the best albums of all time! Love ratm! More like this please!
"I loved these guys back before they got woke!" <-- heard way too many times to be comfortable sharing a planet with them. This album hits hard. The riffs/grooves are fantastic. A lot of the delivery relies on a style of repetition that brings to mind Evangelical preachers giving a sermon. That can get a bit tedious, but it does have the benefit of keeping each song's message focused. 4 stars
it was a wonderful listen just not really my thing
Morello figured out a way to make guitar solos sound fresh.
it feels like my esophagus is on fire. Beastie Boys-esque. shits really fucking good
hmmmmm.....
The album was good included protest and rebellion against the whole system "machine" , the album was not that screamy easy to listen and understand,
Harkens back to a very specific point in the 90s rock scene that was very deeply against what America was becoming--a country of quiet disdain so that polite society's vanity would remain undisturbed. An excellent blend of the 80s/90s "rap" (if you can call Rage's vocals that) and heavy rock, both used in service towards a greater, angrier message. This album is perfect in service to its namesake, it is an angry group of people that want you to stand up against the large-looming shadows of oppressive capitalism, discrimination, hatred, and worst of all, the societal rationalization of these practices. It wants you to "Rage Against the Machine".
The tragedy of listening to this album in 2026 is hearing Rage call out exactly where things were headed 34 years ago and knowing nothing was done to stop it. Their music is filled with anger at the system and begging people to hear them and see it. Sadly, we heard nothing. As for the music itself, it’s angrier than I tend to prefer anymore. But the skills on display are nothing to scoff at. The drums and guitar, though often discordant, are on point. The vocals really highlight the anger and frustration. Solid album and a message we need now more than ever.
3,5
Plucky, angry, infectious rage canistered into a formula that many have attempted to replicate and have failed to do so. Rage brings a powerful call to action with their lyrics that would make the meekest man pissed off at how the world has sanctioned him. The base lines control you with a groove, and Tom Morello is a visionary. Great start.
Samey throughout but I dig it.
Well, this takes me back to junior high.
"Killing in the Name" faz parte da banda sonora da minha adolescência. "Know your enemy" é incrível. "Wake up" é chef's kiss! Continua atual, mesmo 24 anos depois!
Excuse my language, but I frickin love this album! It really resonates with the feelings I have about the slight inconveniences I face in my white-collar life ✊🏻. #corporatewageslavesunite
It's wild this album still feels very relevant and on the nose almost 25 years later. Timeless, and if you wanted a more in depth review - fuck you I won't do what you tell me.
90s alt rock. Very political debut. Hard and angry, pretty great.
give your guitarists head bro
A fun reunion with Zach and his anger. This isn't especially good, but it's not bad either. Nostalgia tips this in a positive direction as well. The land of the free? The one who told you that is your enemy. 😀
I appreciate the passion and enthusiasm...this stuff rocks hard. But there were a few times I didnt know the song had changed and even strarted it over again. Evil Empire has a bit more diversity. 3.5
This is something that i usually don't listen, or ever. However, this album was a delight. LOVED LOVED LOVEDDD the guitar sounds. I think my favorite songs from the album would be 'Killing in the name' and 'Take the power back'. Overall, I would rate this album a 7/10.
Metal lite
I mean, it’s Rage Against the Machine. Unique sound and just a standout record overall
Un classico
Had this on vinyl and cassette. I remember the song “Freedom” was the very first time I ever heard RATM in the 90’s. I was in the 7th grade.
O cara escreve 2 linhas e repete 20 vezes. Mas várias clássicas aqui que me lembram a banda, Tony Hawk e o show do PH no Big Bowling.
Igual descubri mucho banger 8/10
It's dated as hell but it still rocks pretty hard. His voice is extremely annoying though. I couldn't make it through a whole concert of this but I can deal with a little RATM every now and then.
Should be cheesy and goofy but it hits so hard god damn
made me want to organize a revolution
I like this album a lot. It has been many years since I last listened and even longer than that since I listened all the way through. I give this a 4 but would likely give Evil Empire a higher rating.
Rock masterpiece
Kicks fucking ass
Cool artists are the best tool the Left has. 🤘 We need more!
The album kind of feels like a moment before an explosion happens. The energy is high, but doesn’t feel like it really gets the release it’s looking for. de la Rocha’s vocals are insane on this one and I love a good cowbell which they incorporate numerous times. All in all, great title album and listening to Killing in the Name brings me back to being a kid and having my mom teach me about why we don’t talk to cops.
You gotta respect the decision to just straight up write a song that's like, "The FBI killed MLK for speaking out against the Vietnam War."
First Listen: Couldn't write down notes as I was listening cause I had the album on at the gym. But just from memory - - Bombtrack through Take the Power Back is an incredible three track opening. I love the explosive energy of the first two, and Zach's upfront vocals. Killing has a nice fast slow dynamic in it, and I love the slap bass in Take the Power Back. I love the political messaging, and that it's simultaneously exploring tough issues, but presenting them in easy to digest ways. Settle for Nothing produces an eerie vibe. Love the bass here. The breakdown hits so hard, and again, I love the quiet/loud dichotomy of a lot of these songs. Zach kinda sounds like a anime dub VA, in a good way. Another standout was Township Rebellion. The later half of the album I don't remember as well, but I'm looking forward to jumping back in. Adding some notes from my second pass. Love Bullet's bassline. Know Your Enemy's high energy feels like the first two, but changes it up enough to not feel too similar. The rhythm breakdown in the end is pretty cool, and I love the tremolo guitar near the start. The almost jazz inspired guitar solo is sick. Wake Up is probably the least unique, but thats not necessarily bad. Maybe a bit long, but the ending makes it worth it. The lead guitar player is insane. I love the slinking bassline in Fistful. Township's percussion based intro is sick. Love the transition into the unison riff chorus. OVERALL: Damn this album is so consistent from front to back. If I didn't know Killing In The Name beforehand, I would have trouble picking out a single. 9/10 T3: Know Your Enemy's, Take The Power Back, Settle For Nothing
Not too familiar with RATM. First listen (excluding 'Killing In The Name'). My only glimpse into rap and funk metal and rap rock is Limp Bizkit. This guys predate LimpBizkit by a few years but a lot of the energy is there and I'm loving all of it. I admire the consistency of the album. The quality never seems to dip into something I don't like; the majority of the tracks (if not all) are bangers. Zack's vocals are so fun and expressive. Tom and Timmy are guiding the flow and rhythm of the tracks perfectly. And Brad's drumming is supporting all of this. I do want to highlight the dis-jointed sudden change in rhythm and tempo in 'Settle For Nothing'. Usually it's something I would find awkward but the Texture given by the instrumentals was something I didn't find myself enjoying as much as I did. The chorus for a lot of the songs adds to the amount of the fun I had listening to this album on my second and third listen. 'Take the Power Back', 'Bombtrack', and 'Fistful of Steel' were my favourite examples of this. All and all, this album has my head nodding to the beats and singing along with it. Also, 'Fistful of Steel' has a FUCKING SICK guitar riff in the middle of it. Ever make me cross my legs. T3: Killing In The Name, Take the Power Back, Fistful of Steel,
Of course it’s a banger. Can’t really argue with this one, heavy and clean riffage, powerful drums. Very funky. Wasn’t a fan of the vocals initially when I first listened but they’ve grown on me.
10 songs Added to liked: -Killing In the Name (already there) -Wake Up
- This is peak Rage. - The whole album hits hard, it's got an attitude to it. Starting off strong with Bombtrack, that one goes crazy. - Deep heavy grooves, the vocals hit hard. Drummer is killing it. - The riffs are iconic, Tom Morello laid down some riffs on this album that as a guitar player, I still play them quite often. They always bring out the stank face iykyk. - Know your enemy is one of my favorites, just got a fun sound to it. The whole band was cooking. - Production throughout the whole album is top notch. - Hard to believe this album is over 30 years old. I grew up listening to this stuff and it is still good to this day. - ITS JUST ANOTHER BOMBTRACK
A brilliant synthesis of rock and rap. Plenty to say, and the messages are spat out with total conviction. Such a shame they're even more relevant today than they were nearly 35 years ago. 4*
This is a brilliant album, gets me hyped up, great album for running as the energy is through the roof. 4/5
Probably one of the most respectable "rap-rock" groups out there, although I wouldn't fully put them under that umbrella, despite them taking a lot from the ferocity of groups like Public Enemy, and fusing them with the deeper, feedback-drenched, scratchy guitar riffs of the hardcore scene, with dubby basslines and short, piercing riffs that sound straight out of a Fugazi record. The obvious highlight here is 'Killing In The Name Of', maybe one of the greatest punk metal songs out there - Morello's dentist drill guitar solo, followed by the final build in its closing minutes, stands as one of those insane blood-pumping rebel anthems in music history. There's such an undeniable ferocity to Zack's vocals; he was only in his early '20s at this point, which is both impressive and clearly also contributed to the fiery youthful energy of this album. 'Take the Power Back' is maybe the most overt Public Enemy nod here, everything from Zack's Chuck-D-esque flow to catchy motto-driven hook. The song 'Know Your Enemy' has maybe the most earwormy riff here, and that weird, sung almost emocore-esque bit in the middle is super out of place, but it works oddly well. And this is another song where Morello's guitar solo absolutely rips. I know the guy uses a shit ton of wonky pedals to get these whiney, controrted, sharp effects on his guitar, but it doesn't feel like a guy just jerking off with pedals (oddly enough). He relies on them to get a signature sound, yes, but it's not like he doesn't do any of the heavy lifting himself. I already mentioned the solo in 'Killing In the Name Of,' but the weird vocoder thing on 'Wake Up' and the continued PE worship with the high-pitched wailing of 'Fistful of Steel' are some other certified Morello moments. Songs on this album are also generally really dynamic, doing the very common quiet-to-loud post-hardcore thing really well. Because of that, the songs never feel stagnant or too still. And for as noisy as this thing yearns to be, there are moments of beauty that sprout out of seemingly nowhere, like the brief interlude on 'Wake Up' or that outro on 'Take the Power Back'. Just an overall really well rounded-album, especially for a goddamn debut - these guys really hit it out of the park. There's just so much to chew on here, from the incredible core riffs to the scratchy tone on those feedback-drenched guitars, to Morello's ridiculous solos, to Zack's politically driven shouts. I remember when I first heard this years back, I thought it was a bit long, and while I do still think the final tracks are maybe the weakest of the batch, it by no means bogged down the experience.
A great album. 4 stars. Fave track - killing in the name.
Their debut album. Alt Rock / Funk Metal. Sony brings to you an album about 'Fuck The System', a dose of irony. However the album is so much fun and gets me jacked up. The heavy guitars are too loud and I love it. The lyrics are fun. Just good old rage and angst.
I really like the messages in this album and how clear they are. I also like their sound, would definitely go hard at a protest.
Possibly one of the most wilfully misunderstood bands of all time, there really is no response to right wingers adopting tracks like Killing in the Name Of as anthems other than to sigh heavily and then punch them in the face until they get it. It really couldn’t be any clearer in its condemnation of violent racist cops if it tried, and even if the album closer Freedom is a little more elliptical (hint - “Diamonds using Clubs to beat Spades” is not a reference to the game of Bridge) there is no arguing with the sentiment here. This album is still as depressingly relevant now as it was on its release in 1992 in the wake of Rodney King being beaten by cops, sparking protests in response. In fact, there is even more urgency now in the need for resistance to fascism, even if that means violence or ultimate self sacrifice as shown in the chilling picture of the death of the Tibetan monk Thich Quang Duc on the cover. Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me-tastic!
Some amazing songs. There's a huge amount of power in this but it gets a little bit lost in chugga-chicka-wugga towards the end. The bass in the quieter moments (like Settle for Nothing) reminded me of Slint!
Visceral lyrics Angry and grounded Made me prang out in the gym
I am raging
Cool
Rage Against the Machine is the AC/DC of metal. They made a career out of making the same song over and over and over again. I really don't have a problem with it, though. There are definitely much worse 90s bands that got away with doing the same thing. These guys at least have the courtesy to make the same really good song over and over again. My only issue, funny enough, is that they actually tried something different on Settle for Nothing and ended up making the worst song on the album. Among all of the shouty choruses and all the "BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF ALL THE COPS!!!!!! NOBODY CONTROLS YOU!!!!!! STAND UP AGAINST YOUR OPRESSORS!!!!!!" there's a song about the vocalist's personal issues, which still has the shouty chorus in it. It's fine, but it feels so far removed from everything else in the album. The rest of the album is awesome, though. All of the songs are painfully simple, but they really use that to their advantage. You can probably remember most of the hooks from this album, and if you can't, you can definitely remember Killing in the Name. It does what all good punk music does better than most punk music: it gives you something anyone can shout at a protest.
What I thought was particularly cutting-edge at 13 has now dulled itself into a record that is remarkable for several reasons and still an enjoyable listen, but something I can't help but sorta shake my head at. Undeniably great music, but almost juvenile in the way that it handles the politics and the emotions. You know what, though, sometimes that's what you need. Not everyone needs to be Gang of Four.
RATM rules. Good Album.
Found this in high school. Awesome riffs and jams, made me rage! Never got behind politics so, soon put it down. The album still holds up tho, and Tom Morello's guitars are the bomb.
Maybe the libs need to bring this energy back huh
Ahead of its time.
More relevant than ever. Somebody's gotta say (yell?) it, might as well be them.
Top : Killing in the Name Flop : Freedom
Bombtrack - 3.5/5 Killing In the Name - 5/5 Take the Power Back - 4/5 Settle for Nothing - 4/5 Bullet In the Head - 4/5 Know Your Enemy - 5/5 Wake Up - 4.5/5 Fistful of Steel - 4/5 Township Rebellion - 4/5 Freedom - 3.5/5
Raw, emotional, political. Sparse yet dense sonically. This is a group and album that are aptly named. Its not a perfect album (which is what 5 stars means) with a couple of clumsy songs in there but its damn close. Truly something that reflects a place and time, I don't know that you could get away with releasing this today and it being a hit which is a shame. This hits harder if you listen to it sporadically.
4 grande
Excellent album. And I literally know people who became left wing thanks to this album, which is an added bonus.
What i liked most was the bass. like actually their bassist is great. I also didn't realize this album came out in 1992, so now i can see a lot of how they may have influenced some artists I really like. Like that guitar tone sounds like a modern jack white guitar tone
💢💢💢💢
Important protest music.
Anti-establishment core! Huge fan of this. Makes me want to dive into more of their music
Cool album first time listening to this group. I thought the instrumentation was very funky and heavy. The vocalist has an odd flavor. The lyrics and song structure are aggressive and punchy without coming off as preachy. Even the desperate lines and commands come off as pleas that fit with the mood of the songs. Can't say it blew me away like some people but I thought it was a really inventive project.
Epic
¡Poderoso!
Certainly not my type of music but so cool. Good album
Very political but I think it's got a good energy.
Bien
Not my taste, but I can appreciate it. Maybe if I needed to get some frustrations out I’d put it on.
Can’t deny that it fires me up lol. And gotta love Tom Morello’s guitar. Pretty groundbreaking
points were made. definitely not my style, but it's wild to me how relevant this is 33 years later... also '92 my bday year wooooooooo 4 stars
Actually really liked it!
4.5
I wasn't aware of Rage Against the Machine until the Evil Empire album when Bulls on Parade was in heavy rotation on the radio. A college friend introduced me to more of their music, though this was my first time listening to the debut album in its entirety. It goes without saying that this is a modern(ish) masterpiece. One thing that struck me is how the messaging seems even more relevant today than in 1992. The other thing that I really appreciate is the convergence of so many different styles of music and influences in this album. I hear distinct influence from protest music of previous decades, 80s metal, hip hop. The guitar opening of Wake Up sounds like a nod to Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir', and I can't recall which track, but I distinctly heard a 12 bar blues pattern much like the Muddy Waters album earlier this week. Outstanding album.
Bulls on parade is one of my favourite songs. I put on the album during my commute home last night. The rest of the album all sound very similar. Could just also be that I was not really in an angry mood, and wasn’t feeling the vibe!
A call to arms, an album for our times Heavy rifts, great beats, if this doesn't get you out of bed nothing will.🤯 Favourite track: Take the Power Back (from Trump America 🤔)
*Incredible album, especially for 1992. Love the political messaging and guitar work. *A few tracks go a little long and its tough to pick which album is their actual best....they are all so good!
Headbangers all day, fuck the system lol
Some great grooves, hard hitting riffs and if you are in the mood for RATM nothing else will do. It’s a great album that for me is slightly let down by Zak de la Rocha’s vocals which after a couple of tracks grate a little, best listened to in instalments if possible. 4.2
Excellent heavy metal. Sometimes you need an angry song in this album has tons of them. Morello is excellent with riffs galore. However, anger can only go so far and it gets tiresome to hear someone yelling over and over.
Some great songs, and great lyrics. However, I want a little more depth in the presentation that their later albums have.
powerful and raw
Cool riffs, cool production, cool vibe. Performances all around solid
First time listening to metal rock, kinda scared.
Loved this, the sound was exactly what I needed while I was baking
I probably would not like this rap-metal everyday, but today I did!
4*
8/10 - it's Rage Against the Machine
i still somehow haven’t heard this album, or any rage against the machine album, in full. i think i’ll fuck with it, but i’m worried i may have missed the boat with them. it’s pretty late, finally getting into this. INSANE FUCKING BASS TONE. WOW. hooooly shit that’s a great fucking bass line on take the power back. this works in all the ways that linkin park doesn’t, for me. i say that mostly bc they’ve got a similar style. settle for nothing is incredibly depressing now in 2026. holy shit maynard. what the fuck is morello doing to this song 😭😭. he’s pretty good on this album. that solo was weird as fuck. i cannot believe that this all finger playing. also fuck your tim, pick playing sounds cool too 😭 as a whole, good message. a lot of these bars are pretty clunky though, all things considered.
Heel goede tekst
This not my genre at all, but there are so many classic songs on here it has to score highly.
I've heard of RATM a lot before, but never gave them a chance. This was a nice opportunity. The lyrics are incredible. Very politically charged. I love a few tunes also, but too much screaming for my liking. I guess I'm not that much of a heavy metal person.
7.7/10
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
So powerful. Socially impactful. Rage are influencers for many great bands after them.
Will not be a regular listen but nonetheless a great album for the right moment. 'Wake Up' stood out
verry gut
The fact that we’re still using “Killing In The Name” as the soundtrack to protests today says a lot. It says a lot about the state of the world, and it says a lot of the long-lasting impact of Rage Against the Machine. The song never actually went away, but recently it resurfaced in an interesting way: blasting full volume at 1am during noise protests outside the hotels where ICE agents were trying to sleep. The song wasn't just picked because it was loud and aggressive. The message is (unfortunately) still so relevant. “Some of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses“. The song itself is incredible. Zack de la Rocha’s vocals are amazing. You can hear the absolutely genuine rage in his voice. Tom Morello’s guitar riffs work so well with the vocal performance to build a serious amount of energy. His use of the Whammy pedal is incredibly inventive, almost sounding like record scratching or sirens at times. The solo in “Killing In The Name” is so simple, but so damn effective. The breakdown of “Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me” is amazing. When everything builds back up to that seriously intense ending, it's just epic. Even the most mild-mannered person couldn’t resist jumping around the mosh pit to that moment. Every song on the album has that same energy and rawness. Different aspects of socio-political and economic injustices at the hands of those in power (be that government, media or even schools) are tackled unapologetically with the same intensity throughout the album. “Wake Up” is the other standout in a tracklist of standouts. The instrumental intro is phenomenal. The switch between heavy rock to percussive hip-hop and then back to heavy rock works so well. It's a dynamic that doesn't rely on loud-quiet-loud, so the energy levels never dip, but the genre switch at the chorus still kicks off. Then there's de la Rocha's incredible vocals towards the end of the song. Rage love to break a song apart and build it back up slowly to insane levels. The intensity goes through the roof when Zack starts screaming “WAKE UP!” over and over. Epic. Rage Against the Machine’s music is still so relevant in the shit storm of a world that we're living in. Recently, Tom Morello appeared as “an outside agitator” at the ICE protests. While it's depressing that their lyrics about oppressive forces of power are still just as relevant today as they were back in 1992, it's also optimistic that their message of protest and resilience still resonates. And so ICE agents are deprived sleep, as a crowd of people come together outside their hotel shouting "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me". 4.5 stars
While it's not my favorite RATM album, it was such an awesome debut. It's got such good grooves and the lyrics are so angry and delivered so well.
I enjoyed this way more than I expected. It rocks! Again, I didn’t get many of the lyrics, but it sounds like they’d be right up my alley too. 8/10 Most Excellent
I liked almost every song. Overall I like the message of the album that is saying be rebellious and take back what you used to have. Actually I didn't get to listen last 3 song of the album, because I slept at 7 Few songs were not quite my style. So 4/5
Good
RATM is another band that I had known about for years, and was even familiar with a lot of their singles. I admit that as a teenager I was just delighted by the rap-rock song where the guy repeatedly says Fuck You, but becoming older and more politically aware, I see why they wrote the music they did. I think this album gets a little long in the tooth with how much the tracks sound like each other, but the passion of the message is there the whole time.
I never really listened to Rage Against the Machine because I never felt that music could really be the catalyst that changes the world. The music and lyrics are good. I appreciate them. I went to school at a service academy and they were popular there. It seems like the wrong place for them to be popular. But it makes sense when people don’t listen to the lyrics and want just a little bit of rebellion while they are following orders or being part of said machine. Can’t blame good music.
Rage against the Machine was the band everyone else told me way amazing. I once played in a band where I was told to write songs in that style. Without listening to/learning no more than the one song everyone knew (which appears on this album!), my songs were a disaster and the band stunk. Anyway, I knew enough of the songs already. It's not a bad album, and it certainly had attitude. I'm not sure if it's a sin to call them numetal. I will say I wasn't overtly impressed with Tom Morello's work. People talked about him like a god when I was growing up. He did redeem himself further down the tracklist. 4 stars.
This album was insane. Obviously killing in the name makes you want to storm the capital. But bombtrack the opener definitely sets the tone for a ride of rebellion against this corrupt system. The lyrics are a1
Not my favorite of theirs. Still strong. Too many songs feel a little experimental / incomplete.
listened to again how did i give this 3.5 before??
I’m mad at my husband right now, this is the energy I need.
The album is quite interesting, in my opinion, it mixes a couple of genres. It would be quite interesting to see if rap had a different atmosphere.
I get why this an important album to listen to. It speaks a lot to politics, but also to everyone's ability to stand up for what's right.
No on helvetin kovaa ajoa!
How clever i was
FUCK THE MAN
Huge
Raging in all of the right ways! ★★★★
I’m a Millenial, I am genetically wired to enjoy this album, I literally have no choice. I’m not made of stone! You can really close your eyes and let the Woodstock 99 vibes soak in, it's good ol' grunge, they had something to say!! You know!! It was the go-go 90s and they were feeling things strongly, hell, we were all chanting. And it felt good! It still feels good. I'll say it, it's a real shame that they ended up being a little bit wet on the political front these days seeing as that was their literal whole thing. Low key, what is the point of Rage Against the Machine if they're not political, then it's just sounds and words, meaningless chanting for no reason. Hey ho, such is 2026. Seeing as we're talking about album covers, not sure about this one!
It's mad how fresh this felt as a teenager even though it was a good 15 years old, and how much I loved the message. Fuck you, private school, I won't do what you tell me! Fuck you semi-detached house in the home counties!! Yeahhh!!! Listening today it feels a bit like a relic - like, you're raging against the machine but politically this is like, as friendly as the machine's gonna be for a while, sorry guys. It's the 90s, might as well enjoy it, it's only gonna get way way worse!! The music seems pretty straightforward in its composition and energy, surprisingly dated really. But then there's this earnestness and power to it that I still think is really appealing today.
I used to own this album on CD and would play it frequently. I’m still a pretty large fan of RATM but I don’t listen to their music as much anymore. So it was fun playing this in car with Callie on the way to daycare and see her rocking out in the backseat to bombtrack. Seeing RATM live is on my bucket list and I was convinced it would never happen. Then in the magical year of 2020 they announced a tour with Run the Jewels and I was stoked. I bought two tickets not knowing who was joining me yet. So did my friends who wanted to see RATM haha. So as we’re waiting for the tour to start we were trying to find other people to join our spare seats. Then this like global pandemic thing happened. RATM postponed their tour for a whole year and we thought they were crazy. This will be over in a couple weeks…. So June of 2021 it is. Then you know how that story played out. The tour gets postponed again. They finally kick off the tour in 2022 again. My hopes and dreams were about to come true. Then Zack de La Rocha had a severe Achilles tendon tear during a show. He played a few shows seated until a doctor told him he required surgery and a lengthy recovery. So RATM canceled the remainder of the tour and refunded everyone’s tickets. I’m still patiently waiting to hear when/if they will tour again. Also if you don’t already know Tom Morello misses the smaller days of RATM where they would talk to fans in the parking lot about politics. He has a Harvard education and many bigots get mad when they realize the music is very political.
Favoriete nummer: Wake Up Minst favoriete nummer: Settle for Nothing Rating: 7/10
They raged against the machine until middle-age at which point they (profitably) became part of it Having said that, their sound came out of nowhere in the 90's and was nothing like anything else around at the time. This music was "a stretch" for me when released and definitely something I had to acclimatise to 1 song at a time rather than attack (or be attacked by) the whole album.
Dynamite! Watching some of the pre-album live material and listening to the demo included in the 20th anniversary package, I'm struck by what a keen sense they had out of the gate of who they were and the cliches they wanted to avoid, which ended up making this album the timeless classic that it is and the band so peerless in their lane.
Love the album, but already knew it very well. Was hoping for something that was new to me
Enjoyed this. Angsty!
This has all the guttural, cathartic viscerality that you go to Rage Against the Machine for, but it's also pretty shaggy. That this is my least favorite of their three albums is not really a knock; I just prefer that tigthened songwriting of the next two efforts. There's a reason punk songs are typically short. Most songs exceed five minutes, and the formula of Zach De La Rocha raging over a Tom Morello riff can't sustain the momentum for that long. The best tracks justify the length with memorable codas or tempo shifts ("Wake Up", "Freedom", "Killing in the Name"). The rest coast to the extended length on guitar solos or an extra dollop or two of the same riff. The idea that a RATM song could be boring is a real failure of imagination on the part of the producer. Subsequent albums feature a barrage of 2-3-minute songs, with a couple longer ones peppered in for flavor and a change of pace (and almost all of them justify their length). Still, when the guitar, drums, and bass explode 30 seconds into "Bombtrack" and Zach lets out his first grunt, I can feel it in my whole body, and their lyrics have never felt more poignant. This isn't the most sophisticated music; it's The Stooges with something to say, or Black Sabbath meets Public Enemy by way of Pixies. But Tom Morello's ability to write a riff is s-tier, and they perfected a formula that feels essential to modern living.
This is the sort of angry music I can get behind.
you american mfs need to rage against the machine harder tbh. mad relevant rn
RATM goes so fuckin' hard. Killin' in the Name is one of the greatest songs of the decade, it does carry the album a bit. But I enjoy the album all the way, it makes me feel anti-establishment despite my undeniable role as a cog in the machine.
bit noisy
bombtrack--driving beat. the name suits them. in the name of--wow. incredible. acab. take the power back--loving the bass settle for nothing--d.a.m.n. musically interesting and balanced. each song provides variety & contrast. a range of vocal and instrumental techniques. hard hitting lyrics on social issues. this is gonna score high. bullet in the head--imperialism ok not noting every song, but refer to notes for settle for nothing for overall impression. 4/5. miles better than slayer reign in blood. oh hmm i gave that album a 2/5, but this is more than 2 stars better than that. consider either promoting this to 5/5 or demoting slayer to 1/5.
Solid angry album. Lyrics still on point 30 years later.
Really spectacular, one of a kind record. Sad to know that’s it’s still deeply relevant today, but empowering that it’s around at all. Very much enjoyed this one. -Ruby Ditto. This was a very important album for me growing up and continues to be. It was the catalyst for me beginning to think critically regarding the powers that be and radically about change. Musically, the band takes no prisoners. Tom Morello produced sounds from his guitar that are just mind boggling. Lyrically, there are so many quotables on this record. Zack de la Rocha had a way of crafting his lyrics so creatively, steering clear of the trite themes so often characterizing protest music of the contemporary era.
Earth shattering for it's time, both instrumentally and lyrically. Messages so jarring to radio listeners that Zack de la Rocha could get away with having a subpar voice with zero vocal effects whatsoever. So hard to judge this one because it's a statement as much as it is an album. I'm thankful for these guys being a bastion for change in the world of music. I occasionally get tired of how masculine this whole sound is, but can get past that knowing that fighting for justice is aggressive in nature. "Wake Up" clears every other song on here, including "Killing In The Name". Light 4/5
If the bottled rage on this album was directed toward things I cared about, I would probably think this album was too much. However, "the machine" is a thing I can get behind hating, and sometimes ruminating in your hatred toward a thing can actually be a bit therapeutic. Its fun to imagine the impact this would have had when it came out in 1992. At face value it almost feels like it's going for shock value but I actually think it is entirely calculated and true in its intent to make this a statement on politics and society. I don't doubt this turned on a whole generation of young people to question the world in new ways. Musically, I appreciate the unique guitar sounds and different breakdowns this album uses. I think the angry rap singing style is really effective but by the end of the album I do get a bit tired of it. Definitely agree that this deserves a place in the conversation around important albums of the modern era!
I haven’t listened to Rage Against the Machine in decades, but as soon as I saw this album generated, I immediately had Killing in the Name stuck in my head. I don’t think there’s ever been a better time for a new Rage Against the Machine album. We need more of this angry, revolutionary energy today.
Only ever heard Killing in the Name before this, the funk, rap, and metal blend was an extremely pleasant surprise. The lyrics go without saying. Favourite track: Take the Power Back
8/10
Muuuuu solidas 4 estrellas. Me llevo a mi adolescencia.
Freaking lovely
This is a great album. Aggressive from beginning to end, it knows what it wants. There was really only one song ("Township Rebellion") where I thought "this is probably a skip." Solid 4/5.
🔥🔥🔥
8/10
Album #1029 Almost done with this challenge and I thought they may have forgotten this band. I don't give a toss about their politics -- and I only know a couple of their songs. Let's see if a full album is any good. I really like the instrumental part of the music. It’s got a good groove to it, and there is some inventive stuff that you don’t hear other bands doing. The singer doesn’t bother me either. My only complaint really is the far-left angry lyrics. That stuff just doesn’t connect with me, a fairly content 51 year old dude. I will listen to the album again. Best track: Know Your Enemy
Yeah it bangs. One star taken away because Tom Morello can belt out an insane riff but has no clue what the hell a gutar solo is supposed to sound like
I love this album and I'm happy to see it's on this list. 🖕🧊🖕🍊
Best paired with a new outfit and a sassy attitude!
I think Mr. Donald Trump would love to listen to this album
🖕🧊
Good. Just not my cup of tea
Raged Out, first timer, not bad. Something cheesy about tom morello's playing even though it's incredibly talented.
I have never listened to RATM before. They are a band I've avoided, as I just assumed they were too noisy and too...everything for my tastes. I knew I totally agreed with them politically, and I became a fan of Tom Morello's guitar work through his stint with the E Street Band. But yet I still never really listened to them. I approached today's album with a lot of apprehension. I felt I'd appreciate the lyrics (if I could understand them) and the guitar work, but I thought I'd just feel bludgeoned by it all. I'm happy to say I was pleasantly surprised by the listenability of the album as a whole. Was it loud? Absolutely. But not to the point of it being impossible to enjoy. I get why people have them on work out playlists. Back in my running days this would have been a perfect addition. I do think it's a bit longer than needed, but there are so many good songs. And yes, Morello's guitar playing is excellent throughout. As well as the rest of the band. I thought I'd tire of Zack De La Rocha's "singing" but I never did. Standout songs were Killing In the Name, Take the Power Back, Bullet in the Head, and Township Rebellion. The only song I didn't really like was Settle for Nothing.
Already listened to this album for the first time a few months ago due to a famous VGM composer's fandom for the band, and I see why this is such a revered album of the 90s. A great in-your-face, left-wing metal record that draws from other genres like funk and hip-hop as well.
Great album, I do love rock/metal after all, but the guy's voice got a little too annoying after some time and in general I just could've done without all the edgelord nonsense they kept trying to cram in. The messages they were trying to convey were powerful, but other artists have managed the same untainted by some of these more questionable/jarring themes
Teenager of the 90s that I am, this is a classic. I went to see them live. I had 2 t-shirts. We played Killing in the Name at school dances until a swarm of sweaty teenage boys screaming "F U I won't do what you tell me" scared the assembled chaperoning teachers and parents a little too much and it was banned. I think we played in once more before switching to "Know Your Enemy", which is actually the better song. So it's definitely nostalgic to listen to this almost 30 yrs later. And I think, if I'm being honest, this is going to get one star for nostalgia. This album always had 2-3 skippers, songs I never listened too--and I think it's got a few more than that now.
Pure aggression. Opening track smacks you in the face and it doesn't really slow down from there. Bombtrack, KITN, Take The Power Back and Bullet In The Head are all rammers. Lyrically and musically on point, a fantastic record.
One of my consistently favorite albums, but this is not a 5. Some songs (mainly bullet to the head) hold it back.
Let’s start a revolution
Perpetually timely.
Anything less than five stars for this album would be a travesty. The sound; the lyrics; the message is timeless and is the perfect snapshot of the feelings of America at the time of release, and even more so right now. Perhaps even more telling that some of RATM is now part of the machine. Time grinds us all down… 5⭐️
Sure, maybe this is an acquired taste. Special thanks to the TV show Skins and the 2009 Facebook protest campaign to knock Joe McElderry off Christmas number 1, for helping me acquire it. And oh boy does it still slap today.
Good album.
Metal but with a hip hop style of lyrics. Musically very good but the album feels a bit long and it can grate on you with the screaming.
Killing in the name of...?
It's a classic. It's a lot of fun. Punchy and ace.
I've never been a massive RATM fan, but I've always respected them, not least because of their political messages and activism. This is my first time listening to a whole RATM album, though I've listened to a reasonable number of individual tracks in the past. The vocals have never been my favourite style, too shouty, and generally too rap-like, but they do fit the music and the general angry tone of the album as a whole. The fact that I can actually relate to the lyrics and the angry message makes it a lot more tolerable than the kind of rap you get in hip-hop. Musically it's actually more my thing, I like the slap-bass that appears in several tracks, I like the heavy sound, I like the powerful riffs, I like the fact that no individual theme or motif outstays its welcome. It's well done. Tom Morello is very talented, but his style of guitar solo isn't my favourite thing ever. Appreciate the skill though. Highlights: - Bombtrack - Killing In The Name - Take The Power Back - Wake Up - Freedom It's not entirely my thing, but I enjoyed the listen more than I thought I would, and a fair amount of it slapped. Can't really knock it.
BOEMBA LEUK
They say “Rate!” You say “How high?” A four a solid four. Raging against the music quality more like it. Know Your Enemy was better than sickman in my opinion, and I really liked Township Rebellion.
this is what comes to mind when you think about a rage against the machine
Good album but all the great songs are near the start and it tapers off at the end
Never listened to them before and really really liked this record. The social polical commentary was really telling of the times, and still continue to this day. Heard this the week of the fatal ICE shootings… and yeah… killing in the name
This shit is awesome. Second half of the album especially I enjoyed a lot. Good job RATM.
It's everything you expect from a Rage Against the Machine album. Some great hits. Some deep cuts.
I've never been a huge metal head and always thought Rage was a ~little~ corny. But I listened to this in the gym and it was great for my workout
Righteous anger that's still relevant 34 years later.
2nd listen
certainly out of my comfort zone
Hell yeah!
Subtle as a brick, but bricks work just great
While it’s not my favorite Rage album.. what a banger
who up raging against they machine
Still a long time for such a hard album, but every track slaps
4.5/5 - A favorite in early high school. Still sounds strong and powerful. The lyrics seem more pertinent than ever with fascist ICE picking people up off the street. More young men should probably be listening to this instead of whichever alt right podcast is currently trending. Had a lot of fun listening to this one again.
The Beastie Boys featuring Tom Morello. 😂 I guess I never knew they sounded like that! Yet I did enjoy the listen.
Makes me want to tear down the establishment.
8/10 Top track: Know Your Enemy Perfect fusion on rock, hip hop and 90s rebellion.
4.
Kyllähän se jytäs
Iconic and brash. Still holds the same power.
