Such a good album! Weird thing about Killing in the Name is that it was a constant throughout all club nights at uni - Drum and Base night, goth night, standard trendy music club - they all played this and everyone would all sing along another remarkable thing is that no one seems to listen to the lyrics of Rage - I've learnt so much reading into Hoover, MLK's assassination after listening to lyrics - but I guess the tunes are so banging the political message is ignorable - which is a shame. Bombtrack is by far my least favourite track - start at 2 and work down and it's a 10/10 album

Home of the excellent and iconic 'Killing in the Name', objectively the best Christmas number 1 of all time. Rage Against the Machine starts out really strong, has a bit of a dip in the middle before it Wakes Up (see what I did there) again towards the end. Overall, though, a great listen.
Man, I wish I'd been switched on to music when this album came out (and not, like, 3 years old) because I reckon I would have felt like I'd just discovered the cold hard heavy truth of the universe, and it would have absolutely fucked me up in the best of ways.
Nostalgia bias heavy with this album for me, but definitely feel like it front loads it's gems and falls short a little after that.
Listening to this takes me back to seeing Rage headline Leeds festival when they were playing mostly songs from this album. Me and my mate Rich crowdsurfed out while they played Killing In The Name - I got one of the best memories of my life, he got some wanker stabbing him in the leg with a fork. What a show, what a band, what an album.

I think rap metal just isn't my thing, but it's refreshing to see that songs that just repeat the same lyrics over and over aren't a new fad.
I can see why it's so well regarded.

I remember thinking of Rage as the smart and good rap-rock band, I guess along with Faith No More. It seems like that subgenre could've just ended there and we woulda been fine. But Rage were still always at arm's length for me. Nothing here really gets me. Killing in the Name comes the closest. This just never connected with me.
I think I like the idea of RATM more than I enjoy how that idea is executed. Another one that isn't ancient but sounds more dated than albums twice as old. Still fun, though, and righteous.
Is there another rap+rock record that’s even remotely as listenable as this one? It would kind of stand alone if for no other reason than that, right? But throw in “some of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses,” and try to imagine that on a major label album being sold predominantly to white kids and… can we just go back to the 90s already? Also, “Settle for Nothing” SLAMS. Forgot about that one.
Never before has a band name fit the sound they have with such accuracy. And man, what a sound it is. Tom is one of the most creative guitarists out there, and Zach is a monster of a frontman. Absolutely excellent.
RATM is in my opinion the ultimate protest music. There is sonic strength, powerful lyrics, and aggressive performance that equal a steady groove filled with, well, RAGE.
Banger album, but in typical Gen X fashion and given RATM's career from then on, I wonder to what extent I was being sold an "angry youth" narrative from a group of guys that are all now multimillionaires. Still, it was really a new sound for its time and I confess that I still give it a spin now and then.

Another formative album. It still holds up and I think even coming to it new it would be highly rated.
This is pure energy. John Lydon once sang "Anger is an energy," and this is proof of it right here. Hard to believe this is over 20 years old, and so little has changed. I did not buy this album when it was first released, but when I did WOW. Just an amazing piece of work telling the Man to go f**k himself. It's a hard one to listen to when my kid is in the car, I'll tell you that. But it is an important piece of musical history, and definitely worth all 5 stars.
Now that's how you start an album - the bass line and guitar picking to open Bombtrack are awesome (created by Commerford). The raw and politically charged lyrics, de la Rocha's rap rocking, and pulsing instruments set the stage for the rest of the album. You get to hear a bit of Morello's unique scratch playing at the end too (he is a guitar god). I believe it is from him using the end of the guitar's amp cord on his strings. Creative genius; he makes so many sounds that you think are synthesizer but it's all his guitar. I also love Killing in the Name (their signature tune), Take the Power Back (Morello's solo at the 3min mark - wow), Bullet in the Head, Know Your Enemy (more epic Morello), Wake Up (de la Rocha is ferocious on this track), and Fistful of Steel (Morello's creativity on display again in first few riffs and high-pitched scratching - not turn tables kids!) but I admit I always found Settle for Nothing a little boring. Still, the totality of the album makes up for one so-so song. It fueled my teenage years; I want to give it to my 12 year old son right now to listen to, but might be a bit too soon. One of the greatest bands of the grunge/alternative years and one hell of a debut.
God damn! I've known about Rage since the 90s of course but I never listened to any one their albums. This is some angry energetic stuff. Not a dull moment anywhere on this album. I feel like going outside and smashing a printer!
Rage Against the Machine is my go-to when I'm frustrated. No joke, I wrote my dissertation listening to Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails. I angry-write, I guess. Listened to this album and Renegades over and over (NIN contributed mostly with Year Zero). The music rocks and the lyrics are thought-provoking. I always find it amusing to watch live videos and see all the angry white frat boys moshing to this - wonder if they realize they're part of the machine the band is raging against (like Paul Ryan being a fan). Pretty sure I'm part of that machine too, but I still like to rock out to some Rage.

I remember Nick having this tape and the cover art of the burning guy. I remember not even knowing what the image was, just looked like a bunch of scribbles to me. And the music was scary, specifically "freedom." Reminded me of Derek's cd's, like metallica, pantera, and gwar. Obviously this is a great album, but its message has changed drastically to me these days.
Some great tracks, but find it hard to really enjoy it as an album at times.
Another in the long list of well-known bands I managed to miss entirely when they were popular. I heard their name a lot in the 90s, but somehow just never heard their music. Anyway, I've listened to them a little bit in the past year or so because I stumbled upon a recent video of Tom Morello playing guitar and it was really interesting. Listening to this album fully for the first time (I've heard two or three of the tracks before, but not the whole album), I can hear why it appeals to so many, especially when I drop it in the early 90s and play it back in my mind that way. Musically, I think these guys play incredibly well. I know as an amateur musician that why I'm hearing is not easy to do. Much as I appreciate this band in a few ways -- e.g., music (as mentioned), hard-hitting political messages (most of which resonate with my views), no sampling or heavy production, etc. -- I still haven't turned into a major fan. I don't dislike the album or the band, not at all, and there are moments and tracks on this album I like. It's fun and compelling in some spots. I think I might find it a bit "much" at times, mostly due to the music getting pretty frenetic and the lead vocalist screaming (I know that's intentional for effect, but it's usually not something I like to hear) so I don't think I'd listen to them for a great length of time, but there's some real good stuff going on here.
The good ol Rage Against The Machine. Such a defining album with all the raw emotion put into this album. Classics like "Killing in the Name" was from this album.
This album is a blast and reminds me greatly of my teenager rage. Was surprised how much I liked the handful of songs that didn't become singles from this album.

There’s some wicked tracks here and the lads rock hard. Although the tracks become indistinguishable after a while, it’s fun to dip into once in a while to enjoy the anger and the energy.

Maybe 5 stars would have been meer appropriate - definitely 5 star in 1993 - but now listening to it in one go.. ..it is a bit exhaustive, oh wait, let me just give 5 star anyway..

I "got into" this band after Evil Empire was released. 1992 was a couple years before I started playing guitar and paying attention to music that wasn't Boys II Men. The "first record" of so many great 90s bands was lost on me as a result. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, Rage, you name it. That being said, I liked listening to this. The blend of funk and rock was novel at the time and I loved it. And, rapping over rock hadn't been bastardized by Durst & Co. So, in the context, I like this record. But I would never listen to it in 2021. So, 2.
Man - I want to vote so fucking bad right now! Morella and de la Roche for President. Seriously though - great music, well-executed and performed. The lyrics are simple, poetic, and poignant. Rage is one of my favorite all time bands. Also enjoyed the cameo by Maynard (Tool is also awesome and better be on this list at some point).
Some bands have a debut album that can't be topped. Rage Against The Machine is one of them. It's full of passion, aggression, relevance and activism. Everything screams of urgence from the album cover to the music, vocal and lyrics.

A vitriolic metal masterpiece.
A band like no other in their greatest album. This is one of the most aggressive political (non-hip hop) album I've heard, covering themes of anti-capitalism, police brutality, the power of the people, eurocentrism in education, and even government conspiracies behind the deaths of MLK and Malcolm X. There is energy behind each of the tracks, carried out by the ingenius innovation of combining metal and rap (two powerful genres that achieve separate goals) in a way that has never been done so well before. Not to mention the incorporation of funk (you can really hear it in "Wake Up") to engage the audience and get them moving about. De La Roche has one of the most recognizable voices in the music industry, carrying out insane deliveries of his political messages. This isn't singing or rapping in any traditional means, but employing his team's instruments and his grunts to express himself freely. But by no means is he the sole star of the show. The guitar solos are among my favorites. The bass line and drum work are also incredible, creating a unique melody that makes the tracks not only distinguishable but also creates a medium for the guitar and vocals to shine. On top of their instrumental collaboration, all members of the team had contributions to the overall art direction of the album, and you can really hear each of them in each track. No one is left behind. There are absolutely no weak tracks here. "Bombtrack" is the perfect intro track. "Killing in the Name" is one of my favorite songs of the 90s. Some tracks are lighter to help balance the intensity of others, focusing more on the artistic sound (e.g. "Bullet in the Head", "Fistfull of Steel", and "Township Rebellion"). I love that epic two-minute end of "Freedom" that refuses to close out the album. There is always something to like about each of the tracks. If I'm ever in the mood for something with so much energy but also melodic, Rage Against The Machine is what I'd go with.

This album went hard!!! I can see why this is a classic. Not a single boring song in this album, listened to it without skipping once.
Of course this album is still relevant some 20 years later. ZDL may have gone of the deep end, but I still listen to this album pretty regularly and may of course still blast 'Killing in the Name' when I'm in a mood. 4.5/5

I have to be in the right mood for Rage, but when I am they get me fired up. They pack all the righteous indignation, outrage, and anger at the way the world is into really strong songs. I think this album was groundbreaking. 4 stars.

I don't even care about their politics or whatever. This album is straight up 'getting swole' or prepping for an underground fight music. If music makes me want to kick some ass, it gets a good rating. Not a five, though, because the lyrics do get all Edgy College Freshman at times.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this album at least the first half. I like most when the band goes soft loud there's not enough of that to keep me interested for more than a few songs. The heavy-handed politics are also a bit grating over the long haul. I would give it 2.5bstars if half stars were allowed but for this exercise...2 stars

Als single wat overrated en grijs gedraaid maar in het geheel komt het volledig tot zijn recht en tilt dit album tot een volgend niveau. Glad we listened to it, wouldn’t listen to it again. What was here was great, just very repetitive and about twenty minutes too long.

Rage Against the Machine's debut album was controversial, because of the album artwork and the politically themed lyrics in all of its songs. Aside from these things, the metal/rock music was produced well and the album instantly made this band famous.

What more is there to say, the BEST high-energy album out there. If you listen to this while walking and don't increase your 3x something is wrong with you. Lyrics (which use a lot of phrases now used by the worst people in the world I will admit) are relevant as always.

Oh man. the grooves and beats are real bangers. I can't imagine the success that this band could have had if it's message was more main stream. I just love the groove of the guitars.
It's like listening to the same song ten times in a row. The first one or two tracks were good, but very boring toward the end.

I'm giving it 1 star (would give a million negative if I could), because ultimately, their revolutionary talk is just a façade for a genocidal instinct and material lust that is so typical of your everyday armchair communist, castrated, burgeois, and with zero responsibility for his own life. Their White genocide video with that bitch Tim Wise is inexcusable, and I hope they will all burn in hell with a cactus up their ass
I've never been a RATM fan. But fuck what an record. Like you really feel how special it was and continues to be. You can argue a lot about what belongs on a list like this, but without any doubt RATM hast to be on it.

The energy level is impressive. Their sound is like the heavier songs the Red Hot Chili Peppers' did but with more piss and vinegar. I did find it a little tough to handle the full speed right at you onslaught for the first 15 minutes. My kingdom for a ballad. Settle for Nothing was a change of pace but it wasn't a strong song. Bullet in the Head folded Hip Hop into metal very effectively. That was a good tune but then they returned to the full out pace they started with.
A baller of an album, big hit of nostalgia for me as one of the first more edgier albums I listened to. Some misses on here means it doesn't quite make a 5* for me but the hits are so strong its close. 4*

A protest song can be good, even great; a protest album, not so much. The album can drag, it is practically one frantically shouted note (not that it doesn't reach for the softer sounds, only that those reaches feel like needlessly clumsy gropings in the dark).

I don't really know what Rage is usually categorized as, but the lyrics and message are straight up punk. I think that the album has aged rather well, to the point where if you knew some disenfranchised teen you could say "hey, listen to this" and they'd eat it up. This is also the only Rage album that I can listen to; it's not that there wasn't enough things to sing about, but it seems they focussed all their energy on making sure their first album had exactly what they wanted to say on it, and kinda ran out of a theme or message for the others. Like, this album they wanted to sing about X, Y and Z, and in their other albums it was like "hey we haven't sung about G yet, let's do a song about G." I think the only issue with it now is that it was overplayed, so most of its magic has been lost via familiarity.
A solid collection of Rage's finest gems, including some of my personal favorites such as "Know Your Enemy" (featuring Maynard of Tool fame), "Fistful of Steel," and "Township Rebellion." Banger after banger on this one and it is no doubt why this is considered to be their best record overall, especially for being a pivotal record in the fusion of hip-hop and rock with a heavy edge, which other alternative and nu metal acts would eventually try later in the decade.

First few songs have a really great beat, great melody. Not a metal music fan but this is great. Not a fan of the demo tracks at disc 2, but overall the album is great. Although I am looking for a more diversified melody in the album, it is still alright.

What an album cover! What a band name! And they are a true protest band, something rare! Hard to stomach the aggressive music and shouting though.
It was ok, just wasn't for me I think I need to listen to it in another headspace. Very in your face, tear down the establishment type beat. I listen to it a couple of days ago so don't remember notable favorite tracks but I liked the start of it

If the Red hot chili peppers and the Beastie Boys got amped up with some coke at a backyard bbq... I listen to most of my music while at my desk working and this was a bit too angry for me to focus on spreadsheets

Nostalgic for me

Very good messages. Applicable at any time. Kinda like a 1984 meets Eckhart Tolle. I can appreciate it for it’s lyricism but most of the music and melodies sounded the same. Only a few songs stood out as replayable for a casual listen. Mostly enjoyable just for the experience. A bit anxiety inducing just in my current frame of mind. It felt like platitudes were being angrily yelled at me and I was being punished. 3.5/5

Feels angsty and gives me anxiety. Sooo angsty omg. Has nice guitar riffs though but every song sounds the same.
This brings me back. A full listen and I was surprised at how much of the album I know, never having owned it. College houseparties screaming about 'fuck the norm', but listening now the music phrasing is sick as hell.

Absolute classic and 5 star album. Bombtrack, Killing in the name of, Bullet in the head, know your enemy, wake up, freedom, take the power back. One hit after another.
Good tracks. Pulsing rhythm, without being too hardcore. Could be something to put on in the background for workouts

Such an iconic album, though I'm between 4 and 5 stars, only because I can't say that I love every song on here. I would give 4.5 stars if I could.
Incredible album. Its produced really well. Tom morello guitar work Is amazing, and so is the bass work. The drumming is great and the politically charged lyrics are incredible as well. 5/5

Wow a lot on here is just not my sort of music but gave this one a chance. Didn't make it all the way to the end due to angry, political, shouty delivery. Quite liked 'Wake Up'. Rating 2/5.

Not really my style but a lot of fun. Anger, angst, antiestablishment. Started really strong and kind of tailed off.
Already in my collection. Great album and Morello is a stud on guitar.

Oh man, I love this album so much. It's just so damn good. Almost 30 years later, and it holds up so well. Almost too well, honestly. The lyrical themes feel super relevant to today's America and that's kind of depressing. Actually, given current events, it's super depressing. "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses." Damn, del la Rocha. It ain't changed yet. The machine is still grinding along despite our rage.
I still feel like I'm getting away with something whenever I listen to this album. Best track: Know Your Enemy
It’s a classic for a reason! It’s not often someone comes along with something to say like de la Roche did. Through in some innovative guitar techniques and turn the energy level up to 11 and you’ve got an album that still holds up 25+ years later.
Excellent blend of metal, rap, and hardcore. Not that foreign today but ground-breaking in its time. It's also aged very well and is still as relevant and heavy today. Favorite tracks: "Bombtrack", "Wake Up"

3.75/5. It was fine, too intense for me. I think as an album it is good, but I just do not enjoy this type of music, and that affects what I think of an album.
A little samey but some great tracks
The music and message align and what would normally not work (funky rap rock) sounds vital and exciting. Album maybe tails off a big towards the end.
