Reviews (page 13 of 13)

There’s a few classics on here (Jackson, Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues) but everything else was kind of bland. It was interesting that Greystone Chapel was written by an inmate. That was probably one of the better written songs on this album.

It is a fun album , not a fan of country music but can appreciate the quality of mr Cash’s voice but not for me I’m afraid

Not my kind of music, but it was fun.

Klinkt heel echt alsin live.

Not my style. But it definitely grew on me as I listened. Not a lot of priori Johnny Cash knowledge but the crowd interactions really made the live experience special. He jokes around, the prison warden comes to talk. A lot of prison/crime themed songs as well. Overall just not my cup of tea

At a prison! Neat. It seems like a very important album for Johnny Cash and for the prisoners but it wasn't much to me. I didn't connect with the songs and the vocals left a lot to be desired in my opinion. 2 starts since Johnny Cash is classic, but not much of a Cash fan myself.

2nd Cash prison album from the generator. It was way better than the other one but I still just don't care. I had fun for like 1/3rd of the album and then I got bored 2/5

I guess the greatness of this one is lost on me. I didn't really think it was all that special outside of the setup and the banter. The music was fine and the performance was fun, but it never really did anything impressive. I think that's in line with the nature of Cash's music, though; so much of it is structured in the same way. It just gets a tad old after a few songs. And I say that as someone who generally likes his music. Also, it's a live album. It is missing half of what makes it special. I do think this was a much more interesting instance of the live performance recording than most others I've gotten on here, but still. At least the crowd reaction/interaction was preserved well. I'm sure it was pretty awesome for them to be part of it. I just can't say the same based on my listen. Overall: 2.1/5

i thought this was supposed to be legendary/amazing. it's fine.

I imagine for fans of Cash this album is probably the holy grail. The problem is I'm not a huge fan, it's just not my thing for the most part. To me, a lot of the songs sounded samey and I felt not much to differentiate between them. I will say that Cash has a good way with lyrics and storytelling in his songs - often with a kind of gallows humour. Cocaine Blues, 25 Minutes To Go, Give My Love to Rose are ones I liked more. Also his version of Green Green Grass of Home was a nice surprise.

Not my cup of tea

Not quite my taste - but i get why people might like it

Was cool but silly and a bit boring

60er Blues, ist ok zum einmal hören. 2/5

Good but don't love live

Not for me

Great voice and crazy stories, but the album is boring

Every song is pretty much the same, the lyrics are sometimes good but most of the time just okay, mediocore.

Ah, bonzinho.

Not my type of music

It isn't bad. It isn't for me. My guess is the people rate this a 3.02.

Leider ned so lust gha uf de johnny “sweat-drop on my cheek” cash

The music is enjoyable to listen to, but the lyrics are not. He was quite the musician, but seemed to have a hard life and was not that great of a person.

Niet weer

Look, I'm really not a fan of this kind of country. Or country in general, to be honest. I love the vibes of this album, the sound of the inmates, Cash speaking between songs and so on. But I just can't help but find the music itself to be completely dull

this has gotta be a joke.

4/10 - Johnny Cash is alright but this was brought down by it being a live album

lowkey ass (i usually wouldn’t listen to this type of music but maybe i need to give it another try)

It's only 12:01 AM and my day is already ruined since I saw Johnny's judgmental face staring down at me. Wasn't one Johnny Cash live album enough? (/sarcasm, but also serious.) Guess who's earned his one-way ticket to my worse rated artists? ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

I dont like his music. This is okay But I dont like it But thats just my opinion, its not actively bad or evil, just something I think its unappealing and a little shit

“Hello! I’m Johnny Cash... and I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.” Usted está At Folsom Prison.

Fairly decent for country.

I still don't like live albums. I only liked three songs from this album.

Over rated. Boring songs, very samey, annoying crowd interaction

.....I've lost all motivation to put effort into rating songs now

he looks sweaty

not a country guy. 2.09

Which Jesus do I need to pray to in order to not get any more Johnny Cash albums? I like baby Jesus the best, of course, but I'll pray to pre-teen Jesus if I need to, or obnoxious mid-20s Jesus, even. Just, please. No more Johnny Cash.

I like it better than the other prison album, but the music is still just alright, the interactions seemed more fun

Voting with my head not my heart. I love a bit of Johnny Cash and there’s a couple of Cash classics on the album but other than the novelty of Folsom Prison live at Folsom Prison I don’t think it will massively please anyone other than the die hards. Jackson for instance sounded really tired compared to some other performances.

Bit too much rambling on this one. It just started getting good towards the end but sadly too late for me. He can be so much better than this!

Sounds like hymns that old people sing at church.

he’s quite funny between the songs and i like the music more or less. i don’t think it’s anything special more just a fun piece that brings you back to this time and what it might have been like to be at one of his concerts and the music that was enjoyed then. i like the chiller songs but also the harmonica in almost all of them. plus the interaction from the crowd is fun.

77/1089 - I don't really understand prison performances. On one hand, the pro of prison performances is treating prisons as a place of rehabilitation and providing some sort of societal connection to make it easier for prisoners returning to society possibly decreasing the chances they become repeat offenders. On the other hand... you're playing for murderers! I'll do my best to put my biases aside and listen only to the music. After listening to this recording, I found the music to be mediocre. It seemed well done for the genre it was and the murderers seemed to have fun, but it was overall very samey, predictable, and rudimentary.

arranca bien dsps es demsaido country. como 100pre

i don't like the country genre

I can do with the sense of humor, but not with the country music, sorry. 3/10

genere che odio però l’idea dietro tanta roba

This album is quite unique in a way that all the interruptions, jokes, bickering, and audience reactions are left in on purpose. And although I'd usually prefer the recording to be as clean as possible, it's hard to deny that all the imperfections add quite a bit of charm to it. That being said, I just don't get what people like about vocals. No matter how much I listen, I don't understand what I'm supposed to be finding in vocal-based music. I like vocals to be just another instrument, not completely take over the song. For me, it makes the music so much less interesting and engaging, especially when the songs are as monotonous as these ones. I just don't get how I am supposed to like music there only one "instrument" is good and all the others just support it when there's music there every instrument is good simultaneously. 5/10

i do not care about this man

This will be one of my more controversial negative reviews. I respect this at a 5-star level, but on an actual “do I enjoy listening to this?” level … I like country, but Johnny Cash’s voice and musical backing get old for me pretty quick—it’s hard to listen to a whole album.

I expected to dislike this more than I did. It was fine.

More cash, its just all the same

chasch nüt defür Johnny, isch eifach nöd so mini Musig.. de Live-Charakter mit sim Lache und sim „I might have a glass of water“ gfallt mer aber mega. und spannende Hintergrund mitem Gfängnis.

Musically a good album, shame about the songs

Oh, we've already had Johnny Cash at San Quentin...which I think I preferred to this earlier recording of a prison album, which has less engagement with the audience.

A live album at a prison is a pretty interesting idea and this does a good job of capturing the performance and the crowd. But this style of simple country blues is really not my thing and I found the album a bit boring to listen to.

Some of these are really fun but it's just the same old same old after the first few

Może być ale nic szczególnego. Nawet nudne lekko. 2/5

Not great. Suspect it’s so revered because it was a live recording from a prison. Songs were lame, not my cup of tea.

The prison tour continues… Didn’t we hear this already? All songs similar, and this album is very similar to the previous listen from SQ although not as good. (2.0*s)

I understand Johnny Cash and his prison tour being on this list but I don't think I needed another cell stay so soon. Aside from that, this is a very entertaining listen. The songs are already pushing the limit (cocaine, murder, hell + shit) and the banter and laughter from the crowd only takes it further (in a good way). Handcuffs rattling, warden PA announcements, and stories of crimes echoing off the concrete walls containing crime perpetrators all create the irreplaceable atmosphere that really sells this performance. This is why it's on the list and I liked him better here than at SQ. It's a 2.15 for singing about murder to applause from murderers.

Although I am not a fan of his music...Johnny Cash has swagger no doubt. This album makes the list purely for the fact it was his 1st prison concert and I get it...no one was doing that. Why have some of his follow up prison concert albums made the list though? This one has some staple Cash tracks and banter. "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog" was a bit weird. Not sure he really kicked his drug habit though. Sounded like he was battling the Cocaine Blues drip and needed a glass of water and with about 5 mins to go, he flubbed the timing. Ranking it slightly better than San Quinten for being the 1st of his prison tour...1.75.

Another Johnny Cash live at a prison pick, and I don’t get it. Again just too many distractions that take away from the music. After the 2nd speaker announcement, and then people interrupting him singing at the start of a song, I was just annoyed. Then he sang a song about shooting his dog for being A FUCKING DOG. Yeah I hit stop and moved on. Also considering a line on one of his songs was “I’ll shoot that bitch dead” (which by the way, does not bother me). Anyone praising Johnny Cash, but criticizing rap lyrics for violence. I can assure you it's not the lyrical content you object to. You’re just a racist.

Kul setting. Men tyvärr är musiken inte top notch. Har inget med kvaliteten att göra. Det är rätt trist musik.

Not my style of music, but I appreciate the fact that the recording is as is, and it feels as if you were there. He laughs occasionally and ask for water. Appreciate how they kept him messing up the lyrics in too. Favorite track: 25 minutes to go

I understand the importance of this album, but holy cow was I bored.

Never listened to Johnny before except an occasion song on the radio. Some very good lyrics on this album and I particularly enjoyed 25 Minutes

Unfortunately not my cup of tea

Like most of Cash's stuff, but didn't particularly enjoy this live album.

I thought I rated this album again? Is there seriously 2 Folsom albums on here by Johnny Cash? Weird... This one is better than the last but it's still not perfect. I don't get why this record is on here. The performances aren't the best. June carter's vocals sound abrasive. Every song has a similar sound to Walk The Line - which we already know... Cash's talk singing is actually not bad. And I do enjoy him. But this set list was boring and short. Some of the banter was funny. But the mixing in these records are poor.

The sort of music men in the '70s sang along to instead of talking about how they were feeling. The songs are alternately mawkish and filled with crushing despair, but at a distance of more than fifty years a lot of it sounds like parody. The ballady ones are the best. Original recording had another sixteen songs but they were sung so low that only elephants and blue whales could hear them, so they were never released.

i can imagine how they musta thought this was the shit back in the day when there was less music in the world

About as mid as the other prison recording

What an absolute chore that was to get through. Really not my thing.

Should be noted. He only wrote four or five of these 16 songs. Is his performance so amazing to be noted as a great album? I don't think so. Folsom Prison Blues is a good song but I'm leaning toward Johnny Cash being one of the more overrated artists in history after listening to two of these live from prison albums.

I liked some and his charisma but not a fan of country.

Once again with Cash, I appreciate the talent and impact. But his style just isn't for me.

Doesnt do much for me. Live element doesnt really add anything either.

See the rating below for at San Quentin. Cause it's about the same

ANOTHER Johnny cash at a prison album????

Not my style. Much more country, but good for what it is.

Guess I might be in the minority on this one. Was unique for a song or two, then just kinda blended together. Did appreciate his brand of country - seems more authentic and raw than our current country stars. 2/5

Not for me and was a live album with all the boring extras which come with that

This is an album worth hearing. But not often.

I do find Johnny cash a little boring after a while. None of the big songs are on the album. I wouldnt listen to this again. Favourite song: Folson Prison Least favourite: Nothing was bad but nothing stood out to me. Album artwork: Iconic

Boring

Feels more significant to me than it is enjoyable.

Distilled essence of Johnny Cash. Notable in the passion of the performance, as compared to other somewhat muted albums from him.

I enjoyed Cash's banter on this album but musically it was a big 'meh' from me

Not my style. Old style Rock and roll

Decent, starts strong and lulls in the middle

More of a novelty / snapshot in time / historical piece than something I'd want to actively re-listen to (besides Folsom Prison Blues). Might be OK to put on for old-timey, western, "Better Call Saul" vibes.

I prefer the cover albums

a voz desse homem é surreal, porém ficou nisso, né... quanto country, howdy, fellas! gosto quando ele traz sofrência

Una voz increible. Pero muy americano. Escuchas un tema y son todos iguales. Ni

One of those 'legendary' things that you hear about. I've never got Johnny Cash - or why he's so important. All his songs are very very very similar, and aren't heavy on melody or musicianship - but I get how he can be fun, and how it must have been amazing in 1968. But still, this is just three quarters of an hour of a guy singing risque songs to some criminals

Not my genre, sadly.

Not a huge fan of Johnny Cash, but hearing him belt out some songs to the prisoners was pretty interesting.

Cash is great but this isn't something I want to listen to again. Just not for me.

Conceptually, it was really interesting that Cash wanted to perform a live album at a prison, but it meant the set list felt like it catered and pandered a lot to toxic masculinity. The number of references to violence towards women and animals made the album unenjoyable. The songs that didn't include these topics were interesting, and I enjoyed the story quality of the lyrics, but the light scattering of these songs in between violent ones wasn't enough. I also was pretty "meh" about Cash's voice and musicality. Just not my style.

En klassiker

Best Song: Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog. I mean, that's just a fun name for a song. Worst Song: The Long Black Veil. Too melancholy, and the extended request for water was just uninteresting to any audience that isn't literally captive. Overall: The live setting contributes about as much as it detracts. The laughter and hooting adds a nice element, but the conversations just drag the whole thing down. At the end you're just left with some ordinar, straight-down-the-middle Johnny Cash.

Interesting for a bit but then it gets pretty boring. The concept of these guys celebrating figurative murder and abuse is fascinating. Also the mentions of cocaine and use of bad language feels so oddly taboo. Still, though, the music gets stale fast. It’s just boring, eventually.

I like the idea, the music is too old timey for me. Will I listen to again: 0%

I thought I liked Johnny Cash, cause I quite enjoy some of his songs. That was until I listened to an entire album. Every song sounds the same until I got Stripes changes it up and makes it the best song on the album.

meh i'm not american enough to enjoy this. Pretty cool album nonetheless

Dont like live albums, it was cure tho. Significant 24/63 Liked 10/63 Added 3/63 YNN

This rating is not indicative of how much I enjoy Johnny, I just don’t think live performances have a place on this list

Not my favorite Cash

Many of the songs sounded the same. His voice was pleasant and I can picture his charismatic stage presence. It mostly just wasn’t my style, but I’d listen again

Know its legendary but did not liked it that much

Great voice, nice idea of recording in prison, but once again, I just can't stand country music, especially the "true" genre, without a mix from anything else. I am trying, but it's just too much for my ears. Sorry Mr. Cash, I will always cherish "Hurt" instead.

I still miss someone was good Cocaine blues was good Overall decent Maybe it was because I was listening to it while reading an article about Aztec cities for class, but I didn’t enjoy it too much. There were maybe 2 songs that I enjoyed, “Cocaine Blues” and “I still Miss Someone”, but everything else was just alright. Not bad, not good, but overall probably wouldn’t listen to it again.

A couple of highlights

Not my thing but I get why it’s cool

It's kinda charming

Apart from the first track it’s not the album it’s made out to be

Not my genre

I listen to music for the music so you can imagine how this review is going to go. I’ll never understand the aura this guy has and never will. Listening to this is like eating a piece of un-toasted bread with no condiments. Plain and boring. Feels like one big 55 minute song. Someone tell Johnny he won’t end up in prison if he switches up the chord progressions once in a while. Johnny’s banter is fun to listen to, but I’d banter a ton also if it meant shifting the focus away from my dry music. Honourable mention to the convicts who go crazy in Folsom Prison Blues after Johnny talks about killing a man.

I guess this would be interesting in 1968. Cool that he performed in a prison but otherwise this is Johnny Snorefest. Doesn't even have Ring of Fire, what kinda setlist is that. Dewey Cox is better.

Not a lot to say here. The story about this album is kind of interesting and the last song being written by an inmate is definitely cool, but I'm here to review music not read a story. The music is typical 50s stuff, though recorded in the late 60s. He is a good singer and good guitarist and has a serviceable band around him, but ultimately the music itself is boring. It's remarkable how little variety there is in 50s music like this stuff, like they couldn't be bothered to write a bridge? Or have a fourth chord? On top of all that the primitive recording stuff available at the time leads to a horrible mix where you can hardly hear anything besides Cash's vocal and guitar. There is little in this album to elevate it over its brethren from 10 years prior.

Too country for my tastes

There may be notable synergy between the singer and his audience here, but not with me. It's simple, I don't like this music (and I definitely think it's overrated).

Unusual idea for a live album. Music is okay, a bit bland and boomery

Pas intéressant, pas intéressé.

I might have enjoyed this live if I was in prison with nothing else to listen to. This had the opposite impact for me, felt like I was in prison and couldn't escape.

I don’t like country and this music is too old

I mean.. I get it but idk.. J.Cash is cool but so simple and kinda boring Unique but there’s better stuff from the same era, my opinion.

ahhh i did not enjoy. someone get him a glass of water quicker so he will stop talking about it. it was somewhat cool, the live part, but his singing was gah i just don’t like it.

Cash is funny and charming, but I'm not sure two live prison albums (San Quentin is the other one) are needed here. It's a bit niche.

aight, and live... sorry johnny

nah min ven

Blues-rock, country, live-optræden i et fængsel

Expected to enjoy this one more. Just a little too samey throughout. 1.5/5

I can respect Cash's work and this album but it isn't really my thing at all. His voice is overdone and his guitarwork isn't terribly memorable. The prison gimmick definitely adds to this live album though I will say.

While country still isn't for me, there's much more charm to Cash's stuff, and the iconic nature of the show was fun. Don't want to list things I personally don't like about such a legendary figure, so I'll leave it there.

not really my type of music but I can understand the formative nature of this album

Æji nei

A couple of things going against this album. First, the genre is country, and Johnny Cash falls into the bucket of folks that I don't enjoy much in that genre; second, the album is live, and Johnny Cash's voice is only so-so here. Once again, I have to give something... 2 stars. This is your last chance, albumgenerator. Give me something worth listening to, or we're done.

t w a n g but funny

Started okay but overall it got very repetitive

Never been a fan of Cash and this didn't sway me otherwise.

Every Song is the same

Some good songs here but a little too live for me.

Meinasin jättää kesken, mutta kituuttelin läpi...

They all sound the same. Even managed to suck the soul out of Green, Green Grass of Home!

Ei Käteinen mulle wörki juurikaan. Yliarvostettu imo, mutta menkööt.

I'm boooooredddd. Lyrics are funny but also a tad repetitive after a while. Just like the sound. Sorry not sorry

Just not a Jonny Cash fan...

Na un perno total

Johnny Cash is ass and drags down every album with his vocals.

Not a fan of Johnny cash or live albums. This didn't change my mind. 0/16 songs liked

country is just not for me

Meh. I didn't listen to it fully. Not my type. Rating: 1/5

Not really like this album

Load of shit and bollock

i didn’t like that he was singing to a prison

country ET du live

I cant stand country

Country but don’t really liked it he doesent sing so good not my style

Sounds like something you’d listen to during a US history class. Not for me but I could probably understand its historical significance

This idiot had more than one prison album? Fuck Johnny cash. Fraud bitch.

I never used to like Johnny cash. I still don’t I could never see the appeal of out of tune singing and dreary lyrics. Waste of time listening to it. It must have been bad enough being in jail, it was nothing short of cruelty making them listen to this.

More than half is covers... again. Those are the most interessting ones.

Listening to At Folsom Prison feels less like a legendary live album and more like being stuck in a room while someone rehearses old hits. The prison setting doesn’t exactly make the songs any more interesting, and the whole thing drags along like it’s trying too hard to feel “real.”

Ugh! Still do not like Johnny Cash. This album showcases the things I hate in music and which abound in classic county music: violence against women, whiskey, cocaine, murder, running from the law, romanticizing lawbreaking, death row, hanging, gun violence and even a lousy dog owner threatening his poor dog. The only good song on the album is Green Green Grass of Home (which I heard across my entire childhood)….and Cash sings it badly. If you want good versions of this song, listen to Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Elvis and Roger Whittaker. Every other version of this song is better than Cash’s version. Ouch! Will not listen to this album again.

Please no, I hate country. The moment I heard harmonica playing, I knew I was doomed. Couldn't bring myself to listen to whole album, dropped with 2-3 songs left.

Repetitive

Terrible. Nothing good about this album other than the songs being short. Bad songwriting, same instrumentals and just an overrated voice with nothing special. He talks about being on death row or something and just came off disturbing. Just very repetitive so it’s a 2.6 1.3/5

Didn’t like any records on this one. Interesting Lyrical content as well.

Not my cup of tea. Historically intereesting.

Not my jam, proprio 0

Boring as shit, to put it simply. It's just an old man talk-crooning slowly and blandly. Every song sounds the same and I couldn't wait for this album to be over. 1/5 stars.

Hillbilly nonsense, "I don't like country but I like Johnny Cash" it's such bullshit, you don't have to like or dislike country to like Johnny Cash, you just don't like music if you like Johnny Cash

Awful stuff.

Idk if it’s country to what, but Im usually not a huge fan. I understand that it has amazing quality and I liked it, I just don’t think I would ever listen to it alone out of pleasure. The voice is not bad, and the music is really good. Since it is the live version, I did feel more of a connection with the music. Its just not my kind of music, and tbh every time the audience clapped at a phrase, I thought it was pretty corny and bad

Ugh. It is still country music. The prison setting does not help. Not the worst but not a two.

Rating: 1 / 5 ⭐

Livealbum, men syns egentlig da e ganske bra

country, not my style

I can’t I just… I can’t do it. How is it so bad. His voice… the lyrics… the music itself… how. Do people really connect to this on any level? Maybe I’m just uncultured but this… I just CANT DO IT

Livealbum

Just not my jam.

In 1968, as a little kid, I was listening to the mono single by The Spencer Davis Group two years earlier, Keep On Running on side A and High Time Baby on side B. Needless to say, the latter was my favourite, mainly because of the piano solo. It wasn't a bad choice on the other side of the Iron Curtain, in the middle of the pile of family records, mostly gypsy music, Hungarian lyrics and operetta. OK, I found a complete three-disc Traviata album and a couple of poetry discs, I liked those too. I have respect and admiration for Uncle Cash, but there's no way I'm going to listen to two and three-quarters hours of him. It's a good thing the recording doesn't include a conversation between the attendant and the curtain raiser about modern contraception. Anyway, it was a good way to get back to the music of the 60s and 70s. Next up were Velvet Underground; Canned Heat; Jefferson Airplane; George Baker Selection; CCR; Donovan;, The Baytovens; Ray Charles; Question Mark and The Mysterians; Blue Cheer; Elmore James; Can; Bob Dylan; Small Faces; Sir Douglas Quintet and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. Fortunately I've managed to get the artificial stupidity down that diversity is my raison d'être.

Depressing monotone voice to a basic boom-chuck or waltztime guitar rhythm. Not even my parents listened to this growing up, I guess you needed to be full blown Montana hick to fully embrace and toe tap along to this one. Sorry, its just not for me.

As good as the water at Folsom Prison.

Live album - automatic 1 (Yes, I did actually listen to it)

I don’t like live albums

Sometimes simplicity is best, but in this case it is just boring.

Live albums + greatest hits = cheating = 1 star

Most country really doesn't do it for me, especially the overly simple bass rhythm give all the tracks a very uninteresting vibe. And although I quite like Johnny cash's singing, the live recording with the audience chiming in like a if it all was a sitcom makes this feel more like disconnected sections of a comedy audiobook than an album.

neeeein man

couldn't wait for it to finish. just not a country fan.

Hated it. Lasted 2 tracked before I switched off Tidal.

Hated it. As if Johnny Cash studio recordings weren't bad enough, it's even worse live. Don't get it at all.

This is one of my favorite albums to sit through. I love the energy he brings to the show, and you can feel the electricity in the air there. The announcements and banter make it all more special.

Tremendu!

Dark as the Dungeon is hilarious Surprisingly entertaining audience and performance
