Not my style of music, but I appreciate the fact that the recording is as is, and it feels as if you were there. He laughs occasionally and ask for water. Appreciate how they kept him messing up the lyrics in too. Favorite track: 25 minutes to go

I understand the importance of this album, but holy cow was I bored.

Never listened to Johnny before except an occasion song on the radio. Some very good lyrics on this album and I particularly enjoyed 25 Minutes

Like most of Cash's stuff, but didn't particularly enjoy this live album.

I thought I rated this album again? Is there seriously 2 Folsom albums on here by Johnny Cash? Weird... This one is better than the last but it's still not perfect. I don't get why this record is on here. The performances aren't the best. June carter's vocals sound abrasive. Every song has a similar sound to Walk The Line - which we already know... Cash's talk singing is actually not bad. And I do enjoy him. But this set list was boring and short. Some of the banter was funny. But the mixing in these records are poor.

The sort of music men in the '70s sang along to instead of talking about how they were feeling. The songs are alternately mawkish and filled with crushing despair, but at a distance of more than fifty years a lot of it sounds like parody. The ballady ones are the best. Original recording had another sixteen songs but they were sung so low that only elephants and blue whales could hear them, so they were never released.

What an absolute chore that was to get through. Really not my thing.

Should be noted. He only wrote four or five of these 16 songs. Is his performance so amazing to be noted as a great album? I don't think so. Folsom Prison Blues is a good song but I'm leaning toward Johnny Cash being one of the more overrated artists in history after listening to two of these live from prison albums.

I liked some and his charisma but not a fan of country.

Once again with Cash, I appreciate the talent and impact. But his style just isn't for me.

One of those 'legendary' things that you hear about. I've never got Johnny Cash - or why he's so important. All his songs are very very very similar, and aren't heavy on melody or musicianship - but I get how he can be fun, and how it must have been amazing in 1968. But still, this is just three quarters of an hour of a guy singing risque songs to some criminals

Not a huge fan of Johnny Cash, but hearing him belt out some songs to the prisoners was pretty interesting.

Cash is great but this isn't something I want to listen to again. Just not for me.

Conceptually, it was really interesting that Cash wanted to perform a live album at a prison, but it meant the set list felt like it catered and pandered a lot to toxic masculinity. The number of references to violence towards women and animals made the album unenjoyable. The songs that didn't include these topics were interesting, and I enjoyed the story quality of the lyrics, but the light scattering of these songs in between violent ones wasn't enough. I also was pretty "meh" about Cash's voice and musicality. Just not my style.

En klassiker

Best Song: Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog. I mean, that's just a fun name for a song. Worst Song: The Long Black Veil. Too melancholy, and the extended request for water was just uninteresting to any audience that isn't literally captive. Overall: The live setting contributes about as much as it detracts. The laughter and hooting adds a nice element, but the conversations just drag the whole thing down. At the end you're just left with some ordinar, straight-down-the-middle Johnny Cash.

Habe es angehört/nebenbei laufen lassen. Johnny Cash ist groß. Der Auftritt sicherlich legendär. Seine Stimme hat einen riesigen Wiedererkennungswert. Mehr kann ich dazu aber nicht sagen, außer, dass es nicht meine Musik ist und ich andere Lieder von ihm besser finde und mich ab und an die Interaktionen mit dem Publikum (finde ich eigentlich grundsätzlich klasse) innerhalb der Songs rausgebracht hat. Hintergründe habe ich keine recherchiert, hier schreibt also ein unwissender Musik-Trottel, dessen Meinung niemand zu ernst nehmen sollte..

Interesting for a bit but then it gets pretty boring. The concept of these guys celebrating figurative murder and abuse is fascinating. Also the mentions of cocaine and use of bad language feels so oddly taboo. Still, though, the music gets stale fast. It’s just boring, eventually.

I thought I liked Johnny Cash, cause I quite enjoy some of his songs. That was until I listened to an entire album. Every song sounds the same until I got Stripes changes it up and makes it the best song on the album.

Not my favorite Cash

Many of the songs sounded the same. His voice was pleasant and I can picture his charismatic stage presence. It mostly just wasn’t my style, but I’d listen again

Great voice, nice idea of recording in prison, but once again, I just can't stand country music, especially the "true" genre, without a mix from anything else. I am trying, but it's just too much for my ears. Sorry Mr. Cash, I will always cherish "Hurt" instead.

I still miss someone was good Cocaine blues was good Overall decent Maybe it was because I was listening to it while reading an article about Aztec cities for class, but I didn’t enjoy it too much. There were maybe 2 songs that I enjoyed, “Cocaine Blues” and “I still Miss Someone”, but everything else was just alright. Not bad, not good, but overall probably wouldn’t listen to it again.

I listen to music for the music so you can imagine how this review is going to go. I’ll never understand the aura this guy has and never will. Listening to this is like eating a piece of un-toasted bread with no condiments. Plain and boring. Feels like one big 55 minute song. Someone tell Johnny he won’t end up in prison if he switches up the chord progressions once in a while. Johnny’s banter is fun to listen to, but I’d banter a ton also if it meant shifting the focus away from my dry music. Honourable mention to the convicts who go crazy in Folsom Prison Blues after Johnny talks about killing a man.

I guess this would be interesting in 1968. Cool that he performed in a prison but otherwise this is Johnny Snorefest. Doesn't even have Ring of Fire, what kinda setlist is that. Dewey Cox is better.

Not a lot to say here. The story about this album is kind of interesting and the last song being written by an inmate is definitely cool, but I'm here to review music not read a story. The music is typical 50s stuff, though recorded in the late 60s. He is a good singer and good guitarist and has a serviceable band around him, but ultimately the music itself is boring. It's remarkable how little variety there is in 50s music like this stuff, like they couldn't be bothered to write a bridge? Or have a fourth chord? On top of all that the primitive recording stuff available at the time leads to a horrible mix where you can hardly hear anything besides Cash's vocal and guitar. There is little in this album to elevate it over its brethren from 10 years prior.

There may be notable synergy between the singer and his audience here, but not with me. It's simple, I don't like this music (and I definitely think it's overrated).

Cash is funny and charming, but I'm not sure two live prison albums (San Quentin is the other one) are needed here. It's a bit niche.

I can respect Cash's work and this album but it isn't really my thing at all. His voice is overdone and his guitarwork isn't terribly memorable. The prison gimmick definitely adds to this live album though I will say.

While country still isn't for me, there's much more charm to Cash's stuff, and the iconic nature of the show was fun. Don't want to list things I personally don't like about such a legendary figure, so I'll leave it there.

First, the genre is country, and Johnny Cash falls into the bucket of folks that I don't enjoy much in that genre; second, the album is live, and Johnny Cash's voice is only so-so here. Once again, I have to give something... 2 stars. This is your last chance, albumgenerator. Give me something worth listening to, or we're done.

Johnny cash was a bad man that had some pretty good songs about terrible things, sadly the kind of gallows humour that accompanies the performance didn't detach itself much from the horror.

I never used to like Johnny cash. I still don’t I could never see the appeal of out of tune singing and dreary lyrics. Waste of time listening to it. It must have been bad enough being in jail, it was nothing short of cruelty making them listen to this.

Listening to At Folsom Prison feels less like a legendary live album and more like being stuck in a room while someone rehearses old hits. The prison setting doesn’t exactly make the songs any more interesting, and the whole thing drags along like it’s trying too hard to feel “real.”

Ugh! Still do not like Johnny Cash. This album showcases the things I hate in music and which abound in classic county music: violence against women, whiskey, cocaine, murder, running from the law, romanticizing lawbreaking, death row, hanging, gun violence and even a lousy dog owner threatening his poor dog. The only good song on the album is Green Green Grass of Home (which I heard across my entire childhood)….and Cash sings it badly. If you want good versions of this song, listen to Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Elvis and Roger Whittaker. Every other version of this song is better than Cash’s version. Ouch! Will not listen to this album again.

Terrible. Nothing good about this album other than the songs being short. Bad songwriting, same instrumentals and just an overrated voice with nothing special. He talks about being on death row or something and just came off disturbing. Just very repetitive so it’s a 2.6 1.3/5

Idk if it’s country to what, but Im usually not a huge fan. I understand that it has amazing quality and I liked it, I just don’t think I would ever listen to it alone out of pleasure. The voice is not bad, and the music is really good. Since it is the live version, I did feel more of a connection with the music. Its just not my kind of music, and tbh every time the audience clapped at a phrase, I thought it was pretty corny and bad

Un gran cantante y un gran músico. Un álbum en directo es la perfecta oportunidad para admirar todas esas cualidades pero tengo que admitir que no es para mi, no diría que es un mal disco, pero particularmente no me ha gustado.

Folsom Prison Blues war schon ein starker Einstieg, wonach es leider mostly in Einheitsbrei überging. Zwischendurch Probleme mit seiner Stimme, finde ich, dass es ein eher komisches Live Album ist. Habe bisher vielleicht nicht viel von Cash gehört, allerdings gibt es da doch andere Songs, die mir im Kopf geblieben sind und deren Alben ich dann gerne mal gehört hätte. Aber vielleicht kommt das ja noch später in den 1001 Alben. Rating: 1 / 5 ⭐

In 1968, as a little kid, I was listening to the mono single by The Spencer Davis Group two years earlier, Keep On Running on side A and High Time Baby on side B. Needless to say, the latter was my favourite, mainly because of the piano solo. It wasn't a bad choice on the other side of the Iron Curtain, in the middle of the pile of family records, mostly gypsy music, Hungarian lyrics and operetta. OK, I found a complete three-disc Traviata album and a couple of poetry discs, I liked those too. I have respect and admiration for Uncle Cash, but there's no way I'm going to listen to two and three-quarters hours of him. It's a good thing the recording doesn't include a conversation between the attendant and the curtain raiser about modern contraception. Anyway, it was a good way to get back to the music of the 60s and 70s. Next up were Velvet Underground; Canned Heat; Jefferson Airplane; George Baker Selection; CCR; Donovan;, The Baytovens; Ray Charles; Question Mark and The Mysterians; Blue Cheer; Elmore James; Can; Bob Dylan; Small Faces; Sir Douglas Quintet and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. Fortunately I've managed to get the artificial stupidity down that diversity is my raison d'être.

Depressing monotone voice to a basic boom-chuck or waltztime guitar rhythm. Not even my parents listened to this growing up, I guess you needed to be full blown Montana hick to fully embrace and toe tap along to this one. Sorry, its just not for me.

Sometimes simplicity is best, but in this case it is just boring.

Live albums + greatest hits = cheating = 1 star

Most country really doesn't do it for me, especially the overly simple bass rhythm give all the tracks a very uninteresting vibe. And although I quite like Johnny cash's singing, the live recording with the audience chiming in like a if it all was a sitcom makes this feel more like disconnected sections of a comedy audiobook than an album.

This is one of my favorite albums to sit through. I love the energy he brings to the show, and you can feel the electricity in the air there. The announcements and banter make it all more special.
