Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Incredible idea for a live album. Beautifully recorded. Bad ass as hell to sing about murder to murderers. "How does that grab you Bob."
I really respect the album, its history, and what it means, but the music and instrumentation doesn't do that much for me. Just not a country guy. Cash is cool though.
Feel like this probably hit harder back when it was first released. Still a good album mind you, just not as powerful as it originally was. Gets an imaginary extra point for going to a prison and singing the inmates songs about being locked up, the death penalty and the long arm of the law. Very funny situation tbh
Great artist!!
I don’t normally like to listen to live recordings but I enjoyed this one. Songs were short with just a little talking. Johnny was obviously happy to be performing again.
Classic, one of the most recognizable voices in music. A hint of playfulness and grittiness in his lyrics and tone. Would I play it again?? Maybe
Don’t do drugs and don’t go to prison 🎶
Nice
Good album every song was very much the same.
Good album. The interesting situation/dynamics tends to inflate the quality of the actual music, but it is still solid. Singing about incarceration and the death penalty to those folks at that time must’ve been something. This would never happen today. Historically, a 4-5. All in with the music, perhaps more of a 3.
I liked it but every song sounded like “bones are their money” from ITYSL but that’s probably my fault
Great concept for a live album and overall a great album. Enjoyed that they left in the banter between songs. Gave it an authentic feel. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
real jailhouse rock. a bit distractingly fun to work to (did more dancing than working). also Johnny Cash really loved coke
Great album, classic songs. Not my go to music but solid songs
I didn’t finish it because it’s pretty long, but the first half of the album really trapped me. It’s very good and easy to like.
3. Country music not my thing
Baritone voice smooths Over the hurts and pains of Confinement and loss
I remember as a teenager becoming aware of this album and the single Boy Named Sue which up until today I thought was on this album. Having updated myself I now know the chronology of the single but that gives an idea of my lack of knowledge of Jonny Cash. Country music was never to my taste and I have largely dismissed it. But I have listened to this album through and really enjoyed it. Just about every track is a toe tapper and I loved a lot of the gallows humour contained in the lyrics. I also thought that given that it is a 55 year old live recording with limited resources and technical recording equipment, that the overall sound of the recording was good. Especially that it managed to capture the feel of what was an unusual concert. The context of the concert does bother me, wondering why serious criminals should be entertained in this fashion. Surprising it was ever allowed in the 60’s and more likely to be done in these woke times. That aside and assessing its musical value only I enjoyed the album and can understand why those of the Country Music persuasion value this album so much.
Johnny Cash's At Folsom Prison captures the raw energy of his legendary performance. While some songs may feel repetitive, Cash's interaction with the audience and the warden announcements add authenticity to the recording. It's a gritty and memorable album that showcases Cash's undeniable talent and charisma. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Folsom Prison Blues
I did like this but not thaaat much. I understand the importance of it, pretty bananas that they let him do a show in the prison. some of the songs I really liked because they're classics but other songs were a bit of a drag. Giving it a 3 cos i ain't that bothered. Made me want to watch Walk the Line though
Yes, he's a true American original with an instantly recognizable voice-of-God sort of singing style, but one finds him a hammy, even cringey showman. And what does he find so amusing about murder ballads? The production is rudimentary and the playing not exactly virtuosic and yes, we get it, you're recording a live album, so no cussing. One imagines it was a bit of a location joke – you just had to be there.
It's ok not a big Johnny Cash fan. The vocals are pretty average although I think Cash's strength is live performance so hearing the people at the prison and hearing Cash interacting with them made the album experience much more entertaining
Well... If I had to guess which of the prison albums Johnny Cash had recorded first, I would have guessed San Quentin (which, as you all remember, we already reviewed, and was released after this one). Somehow that seemed less of a put-on, there was a feeling of gritty unease and a riotous vibe to the audience that seemed to genuinely teeter on the edge of being unsafe. This one, between the material and Cash's pandering to the audience, just strikes me as a little less honest. It doesn't help that his voice is not in top form. So, I suspect a lot of my response to this album is colored by my own perceptions and having heard the other. Had we listened to them in reverse order, would I have flipped the reviews? I don't know, but as of right now, I liked the first one better.
I love being flushed down the toilet of your heart :)
this is true country music. my mom tells me how lame johnny cash is but i tell her time and time again, him, along with the likes of dolly parton and willie nelson are the true faces of country music. in johnny's case he tells all sorts of stories about his time as a criminal, and he has plenty to tell. despite the genuine stories and interaction with the audience, unfortunately i can only really call this album fine... even as someone that calls this type of country good, for me it's only alright.
Johnny Cash is a Legend and his personal style is pretty good, for me this CD was a little slow with the same "groove" (maybe was my mood while listening it at work), buy anyway I would recommend to listen it.
Classic Johnny Cash. I love how raw and genuine he sounds.
The best type of country there is. JC is a boss. Love the live aspect. A little swoony for repeat listens, or maybe I’ve already listened a lot, hence the 3 stars.
I never got into Johnny Cash until the past few years. I like it, but not something that'd be in my regular rotation.
Was one Johnny Cash album in prison not enough? Or was there nothing else to fill out the list? I guess this list really needs an overhaul.
Johnny Cash hates Condors
This seems like a classic album. I do like Johnny Cash, although I haven't heard this album. Showcases his talent for live performance. I know a few of the songs already and it's good to hear them live.
Country music, not my cup of tea, but I like the lyrical work of the album.
Never listened to this album all the way through before but it was fun. Not something I normally listen to but I can appreciate it for what it is.
Okay. Gets a little old and repetitive.
3 and a half stars
Great story. Great man. Decent album. I find with a lot of really prolific singer-songwriters most of their stuff is only ok.
I'm not a country guy, that's all I have to say, nevertheless the album is ok
It's probably more "historically important" than "good" but that is not to say it's bad. Johnny Cash has a cool voice, and the songs here are pretty good. His banter is interesting. It's a fine listen, but maybe not one worth hearing repeatedly.
I feel nothing
I usually don't like live albums but I found this one to be alright, could do without the random announcements though. Johnny Cash's voice is amazing as always but a lot of the songs have a "samey" feel to them.
This was fun. But not really my thing. I did like folsom prison blues and green grass of home
i had never listened to the full album before. it was good. i couldn't believe some of the lyrics that prisoners liked and cheered for.
More a curated novelty barnstormer than the weightier San Quentin album, this is fun and Cash’s voice imbues drama into even the daftest of notions. Cracking band behind him, one pretty mean misogynist song-line, and a lot of songs about being and dying in jail.
3.5
Same as the last other ones.
1= classic, can’t go wrong 2= tad slow for me but not a bad song 3= the song hits home too hard atm minus points 💔💔 4= vibey asf, wish i was doing cocaine too pal 5= great song but idk why he’s on about beans 6= reminds me a bit of rusty shackle, mint 7= cheer up mate 8= slow and depressing 9= icl i got bored and stopped listening overall= 6/10 gets an extra point for being a dilf
11/17/2023 Si Bob Dylan cantara narco corridos. Very good.
mellem 3 og 4 et sted
3.5/5
best track - dark as the dungeon worst track - jackson
We already got At San Quentin so I wonder just how different this one is to include two live albums. After listening, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other one. More fuel that more than one live album is unnecessary.
Felt like I was watching Buster Scruggs again. a nice experience The album starts with a lot of fast paced songs and then slows down. I enjoyed both styles and loved Johnny's storytelling throughout. This album has a great atmosphere thanks to the enthusiastic crowd and Johnny's showmanship throughout. Makes you wish you were in prison that day.
good makes me sad. jonny cash needs to chill
I can see the popularity, just not my cup of tea.
Rollo.
Entspannter, dadurch teils eintöniger, Outlaw Country.
Folsom Prison Blues - Alright. I've never listened to Johnny Cash before and I know it has charm to certain people but I didn't like this one. It felt too old 'country' style, with the yeehaws and stuff. Unfortunate but it is what it is, I suppose. Orange Blossom Special - Not one of my favourites, to be frank. I don't typically like country music and harmonicas even less, so I'm not really surprised. All comes down to preference. The Long Black Veil - Quite liked this. Definitely one of my favourites in this album, despite my general dislike of country music. The slow and depressed tone and mood was great. Jackson (With June Carter) - Loved June Carter's voice here. One of my favourite tracks, if not my favourite on here. Green, Green Grass of Home - My favourite solo song on here by far. I Got Stripes - Same as what I can say for "Give My Love To Rose". June Carter as backing for the lyrics sounds great with Cash. Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog - Same as "The Wall", to be honest... The Wall - I didn't really like this one. Didn't feel too memorable, just felt like *a* country song. 25 Minutes To Go - A much more sombre one at the beginning but picks up. Especially enjoy the storytelling as time progresses. One of my favourites so far, as it's my fifth song on the playlist. Dark As A Dungeon - Very nice. This was the second one I listened to in the album (due to the YouTube playlist I was using being structured like that) but it's very, very good, even with Johnny accidentally laughing midway through and all. I Still Miss Someone - Similar to "Dark As A Dungeon". Short but pretty decent. Cocaine Blues - Feel's a bit too old-country style for me, same as Folsom Prison Blues. Not bad though, like the rest of them though. Send A Picture Of Mother - It was just OK. Not much I can say about it. Give My Love To Rose (With June Carter) - Again, June Carter made the song much better. The duo make the songs just so much more emotional. Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart - Like "Send A Picture Of Mother", it didn't really inspire any feelings in me. It was a song. That is all to me. It was just alright. Greystone Chapel - A very good end to the album.
About as good as C&W gets, and that's still only a 3
I would have to listen to this again. Probably the lyrics are good :). On a first listening (I do not regularly listen to us-folk). Within his genre, a classic I guess :)
ok
I only gave Johnny Cash a first proper listen after my sister told me how much she liked him. He was always on my radar, but I hadn’t really actively listened to his music until then. I’ve since found that I quite like what I’ve heard, so I’m looking forward to hearing today’s album. Songs I already knew: Folsom Prison Blues Favourites: Cocaine Blues, Jackson Until I started these reviews, I never really saw the appeal of live albums. This is further proof of past-me being an idiot, as it makes for a really fun listen. You can hear and feel the excitement in the crowd, and the charming times he forgets the lyrics and needs to come back in can make you feel like you’re there enjoying yourself with everybody else. Overall, this was a good bit of fun and I enjoyed the twangy rockabilliness of it all.
I get it but I also don't.
Good live album, just not quite as much pop as San Quentin. Johnny Cash has such good stage presence.
One's of the mind that it's unnecessary to include more than one of these prison records. Same old cussing jokes and making a big deal about the recording and asking for a water; one wonders about the production choice of including or whether it might have been an attempt to build solidarity with the audience. Yes, the songs are generally good (if a bit flat and direct) and yes it was good to have back the Man in Black. There's a sameyness after a time, though one recognizes it's silly to criticize a one-of-a-kind artist for not being versatile. He's not the world's most subtle showman, is he, nor its most mellifluous singer? The chuckling tarnishes "Long Black Veil." For love songs, one prefers "Give My Love to Rose" to the one about the egg-sucking dog, which could be personal preference. "Greystone Chapel" and "Green Green Grass" also decent. This is the better of the two prison records, though, SQ one is the more raucous. The bad, obvious jokes and overall silliness makes it a bit hard to take seriously.
Love the authenticity of the album. The little quips, mess ups and off hand remarks make it. June Carter is a beast. Parts of this are a bit boring and like listening to old church songs.
Folsom Prison Blues, 25 minutes to go, son buenos temas. 3/5 para mi.
Having only heard the studio stuff, it was nice to hear the lighthearted attitude of Johnny Cash while performing, and the times he broke into laughter while recording. Notable songs for me: Dark as the Dungeon Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart Greystone Chapel
3/5 - pretty repetitive, generic, nice ballads.
Not the biggest fan of country, but Cash is okay, still not my favorite though.
Tykkään myöhemmästä vankilalivelevystä enemmän, koska siinä kuuluu enemmän vuorovaikutusta yleisön kanssa. Paljolti liian rauhallinen tunnelma.
# 72 : Not bad, a bit slow and samey, but who doesn't like Johnny Cash? 25 Minutes To Go
Can't tell if this is gonna grow on me massively but for now the whole concept is extraordinarily cool. All the songs are about prison and he's in prison playing to prisoners. Classic. It's the bits between the songs that really make the record
Meh
Cannot be fair because it's not a genre that I like
sarcasm and fun songs and serious
I have an irrational fear of going to jail, so this may not have been the best album for me. Just kidding... well, half kidding. This album was very good. I've never been very interested in Cash as I never liked his voice too much, but you can't deny his artistry. He's a great performer. Despite making lots of mistakes, he still gave a very polished performance in the way that matters. I also loved the mistakes, though! The whole thing just felt very real in a way not many recordings do, even live albums. Also, he really knows how to play to his audience. The vast majority of songs he played were about prisons or criminals, including some of his own. And he really is a very powerful songwriter. I was only half listening for a lot of this album, but I was still able to be moved by it. If I was fully listening, I probably would've been even more moved. For the record, "Send My Love To Rose" actually made me cry, and so did "Greystone Chapel." In fact, I'm going to write a whole paragraph about "Greystone Chapel." When he said it was written by an inmate, I thought "awww, that's sweet," but I thought maybe it wouldn't be that good. I wasn't expecting such a well-written, powerful song. It's up there with Cash's own songwriting. I'm not even Christian, but the song was so powerful and inspirational that it would be hard not to be moved by it. The whole situation is almost problematic though. It almost gives the message that it's worth committing crimes and going to jail, because you can write a good song and get to have a famous artist cover it. At least, that was my initial reaction. Reading Glen Sherley's Wikipedia page told quite a different story. Apparently, God couldn't save him after all, and neither could Cash. There were a lot of other covers on this album, too, but they were all very well chosen. They were all powerful songs, and performed so well. Favourite tracks: Send My Love To Rose, Greystone Chapel
johnny cash cool nice guy with cool voice
Rating - STRONG 5 Best Song - Jackson (8/10) Worst Song - Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog (3/10) Thoughts: Very creative concept to speak from the perspectives of different prisoners and how they are feel in different scenarios surrounding prison. Detours on the album from this topic were not required and slightly ruined the album experience. Overall, it is an OK to GOOD album that has its high points but some low points which made it so that the album loses its already low cohesion.
Such a great playlist of songs, done at their highest level. The banter with the prisoners is its own
I literally just got At San Quentin, and I listened to this album with my partner about two days ago, so this was a funny one to get. I'm just gonna review this one off of memory rather than listening to it again. I liked the energy of the album quite a bit. It sounds like all the other Johnny Cash I've heard, so if you like that, this is a fun way to experience that sound. I think my favourite song was Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog, but it's hard to remember after a day or two.
Folsom Prison Blues: Decent opener, a Little boring- 6/10 Dark as the Dungeon: A lot catchier, pretty good- 7/10 I still miss someone: Short and sweet, pretty good- 6/10 Cocaine Blues: Great lyrics, great energy- 8/10 25 Minutes to Go: Great concept, nice lyrics- 9/10 Orange Blossom Special: The harmonica is atomically annoying, Song is aight- 5/10 The Long Black Veil: Great Lyrics, Stripped back but potent, highlights the lyrics- 9/10 Send a Picture of Mother: Sweet ballad- 8/10 The Wall: Good song- 8/10 Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog: Goofy song- 5/10 Flushed from the Bathroom of your Heart: Eh- 5/10 Jackson: Great Duet, the girl has PIPES, nothing else stands out, though- 7/10 Give my Love to Rose: Pretty aight- 6/10 I got Stripes: Pretty much just the opener but worse- 5/10 Green, Green Grass of Home: Would've been great as the closer, great twist- 9/10 Greystone Chapel: IT's fine, a little boring- 6/10 Overall score (based on average)- 6.8/10 Not mind blowing but a pretty good listen
First time ever listen to him, even though i know him by his legend, but accually never listen. Never liked country very much, but this album live is pretty good, first the songs and their musicality, his iconic voice and his interaction and the reaction of the audience make it all very cool. I liked Cocaine Blues and 25 minutes to go, very "funny" songs but with a dark subject.
I'm a fan of Johnny Cash when he's on and performing, but I've never gone outta my way to listen to his music, and this hasn't really changed my mind, but it was still a nice enough live performance. Pretty crazy to think the room is full of criminals and he's just cracking jokes about the wardens with them, really makes him seem like a cool dude, but the music itself was just okay. Got a bit repetitive near the end.
Not much of a country listener, and I really appreciate and respect Johnny Cash, but the songs really started blending together for me. The performances were undeniable, and he sounds great. I'll probably listen to some of these songs again, but probably not a full album listen. 3.5/5
Interesting concept for an album. Johnny Cash's sound is so distinct and the songs have a great storytelling element.
It may be on the list as well but I think Sam Quentin is a better album.
Thanks for the existential dread, Johnny
I enjoyed the songs a lot and Johnny Cash's voice is phenomenal, don't get me wrong, but live albums really aren't my thing. This did make me find out that Shel Silverstein wasn't just a children's poetry author and I kind of wish I could unlearn some of what I found out about him, to be quite honest.
Folk .Country. Un poco aburrido
I had never listened to this album and had high hopes. Cash is timelessly cool, and that still comes off during this recording. Lots of banter, hollering by inmates. What a cool setting. That being said, after a few song I was pooped of listening to what seemed to be the same song over and over again. Another negative: his voice goes limp like five songs in and he starts begging for water. Strong two, weak three.
Front half has some of Johnny Cash's best, the second half loses me
Cool idea for an album, but lost me throughout the playtime.
Country music is not for me
I don't think this list needs At Folsom Prison _and_ At San Quentin. I consider this basically a duplicate. Minus one for that gives a 3.
Good
Nice collection of songs with some good humour. It would have been amazing to have seen it live. Although not as a prisoner, I suppose
3.5 So apparently both of Johnny Cash’s live prison albums made this list, though really it shouldn’t have been any kind of surprise - the man’s connection with prisoners is one-of-a-kind. Like, how many musicians can you imagine actually being able to go up on stage at one of these shows and having the audience be totally into it? No disrespect to modern country artists, but I think if someone like Morgan Wallen tried this they would catch a shoe to the head. And yet as a musician of the genre who never actually spent a night in jail himself, somehow Cash managed to embody that outlaw image so well. There’s a lot of really enjoyable stuff here, and one thing this album in particular reminded me of is how good of a storyteller Cash is - my initial listening was during a workout, and I couldn’t help but pause sets so I could hear the conclusion to songs like 25 Minutes to Go and The Wall. Even if you’re not here for the stories though, there’s a really fun spirit about most everything, with Folsom Prison Blues and Cocaine Blues being two enjoyable tracks in particular that exude outlaw energy in the most badass of ways. That all to say, while I enjoyed everything here, this one didn’t quite hit the same as At San Quentin. Comparatively, that one felt just a little more iconic and well-rounded, especially with songs like I Walk the Line, San Quentin (and its reprise!), Wanted Man, and of course, the debut of A Boy Named Sue. This one had a couple misses for me with Dirty Old Egg-Suckin’ Dog and Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart, and the crowd work in general felt just a touch less engaging - though I loved him getting bleeped for mentioning the words he can’t say on TV. Through and through, still a really good album. After it concluded, it was a bit jarring to me at first when my Spotify decided to shuffle in The Ramones and Dead Kennedys, but then I thought about - an entire live performance planned for prisoners in an actual prison? The man may be a country musician, but there’s no denying the punk spirit there - and I respect the hell out of him for it. R.I.P. Cash, few did it as cool as you.
Great classic album.
Johnny legenda s opakim glasom.
It’s good but San Quentin is better.
Classic - needs the right mood but CLASSIC.
it was cool.
Very wholesome, very listenable, bonus for its unique setting. A bit repetitive, though.
I had San Quentin a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. This time the novelty has worn off a little and I found the joking about battery and murder a bit distasteful.
Highlights: "Folsom Prison Blues," "Flushed from the Bathroom of your Heart," "25 Minutes to Go," "The Wall" The highlights aren't as good as the San Quentin show, but this is a much more cohesive show with much stronger performances. A high watermark of the development of outlaw country in the '60s. Always a good reference point for any conversation about authenticity in art: people don't ask that songs about them be written by themselves; they want to feel recognized.
I like Johnny cash, but his earlier albums, while good musical theater, are not terribly musically inspiring. Won’t stop me from listening to him…
This is orders of magnitude better than any kind of country that is released today.
Yea not bad
Classic album deserves to be on the list, but after getting it earlier in this competition I prefer at San Quentin to this.
It'd all very iconic but overplayed.
Fairly enjoyable, especially at the beginning, but it gets very repetitive. It definitely belongs on the list, but I don't think I'll really listen to it again.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Loved the interactions with the crowd. Made for a very unique listening experience. Who would have thought. Prison. Underrated spot for a live performance.
Classic. The title track, Cocaine Blues and Jackson are favourites for me. 25 Minutes To Go is SO dark but pretty catchy tune. Johnny's voice is amazing. Musically pretty boring but the songs get my foot tappin'. The back and forth between Johnny and the crowd is pretty fun. Didn't like that jerk warden though. Would listen on to this on a Saturday morning at the lake.
yeehaw
cooler for what it is rather than the music itself
He has a great voice. I like the live vibe. Half way I got bored. I did finish listening to the record, but I didn't enjoy the 2nd half at all. Too much too similar in a style that I don't like very much in the first place. Favorite song: Folsom prison blues.
I do not like live performances. The songs on this album are really good however, so overall quite a nice album. ***
-live album -listening while doing HW -HERMONICA!!! Heavily featured in orange blossom special -someone get this man a drink of water damn -vintage yee haw
This just feels so different to any other live album. Prison life continues around the performance with the announcements and interjections
what a voice. Classic jail Cash.
All sounds the same to me, apart from the title track which has always been a favourite of mine.
Yep, Johnny singing at a prison again. "Best "bad boy" lyrics in a song ever" goes to: "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" from Folsom Prison Blues. The audience and banter give the album its charm and character. It's one of the better live albums I've heard on this list. 3.5/5
Already quite familiar with this, of course. Cash in concert - even in front of prisoners - is a bit of a mixed bag for me. Gets a little of that old fashioned showbiz. But he was certainly in fine form, and he does a few of his classic tunes.
A classic.
Divertido y escuchable, aunque no imprescindible.
Me gusto pero se escuchan presos
While I understand the significance, I cannot get much into this. The sound is quite odd, the obvious 'it's live' things get old at some point. Id prefer 'cleaner' Cash albums personally.
Cool
Some great songs, never really listened much to Johnny, but will be back to this one!
Apart from it being a bit creepy when they cheer everytime he talks about killing, spitting at, or hurting someone…this album is quite interesting. It’s almost storybook, or like a play, you can really picture the performance and are transported. The music is toe tapping. Think I would have little interest if it wasn’t a live album.
Old good classics. Not mine.
I like “Folsom Prison Blues”, which I already knew. Just not really a country person. Don’t really have anything else to say about this.
Country folk americano. Un 3.
I like a few Johnny Cash songs but the religious ones are crap.
I'm mighty surprised they let him play at a prison given the lyrics
7/10
il est mims ça va
Kinda booring buy didnt listen thourougly
the first thing i noticed to enjoy was the lyrics. it just made sense to me. for some reason the fact that it was recorded live made the whole album better in my eyes. speaking of the music itself, very classic, like a fundament of country music. i am not the biggest fan of the genre, i listen to it from time to time, but those specific songs sound actually great. maybe an old classic country is something for me. definitely it put me in a good mood and that's a big advantage. bad thing i noticed is that every song sounds very similar to one another and it'd be hard to distinguish which one is the one. but the melody is good obviously so i can't complain. favourite track: "at folsom prison" and "cocaine blues", least favourite track: couldn't actually choose.
6/16, 38%
A very charming album with lots of heart, just not really for me
Genuine respect for a singer with a man in black image of murders, betrayals and heists going to a prison full of people who did those things for real. Almost like Gangsta Country and Western. Couple of novelty tracks in between the murdering, drug taking and prison timing.
great
Cash kills it and there’s awesome energy here with the crowd, the concept is super cool but there’s too many slow love songs what makes you choose this set list for a room full of dudes
I really hoped I'd enjoy this more. I just don't think I'll ever "get" Johnny Cash the way I should.
Johnny Cash has a really unique voice and the concept of this album is very cool. My problem with it is everything sounds the same so it gets redundant.
Fun album, listening to the crowd and all. Folsom blues and long black veil are among some of the best here. A lot of the songs sound repetitive, however.
The performance was spot on and the sound quality was surprisingly good. It was generally a pleasant record to listen and would be amazing to see it on video. However I just can't appreciate this as an album, not a fan of treating live records the same way as studio ones with new material (with the exception of Daft Punk's Alive). I also felt a bit uneasy about the romanticization of prison and outlaw life in general. So in spite of me enjoying country music I have to rate this rather low.
The music is OK but do we really need another live prison album from Johnny Cash on this list?
Johnny's obsession with prison and criminals is weird and his music is just one big Ballad to um. Intersting to hear the interaction though.
Have we not listened to this already? Maybe I just had our on repeat after watching Walk The Line... Good stuff, anyway. I like the live element, it does add something. Only three stars because I'm not into country music.
At San Quentin came up first on our group, so we'd already had "a Johnny Cash prison album", even though At Folsom Prison was released first. It's good, the live interaction bits give it more character.
A fun live album. But I don't like live albums to begin with.
Fuck the system *screaming prisoners*
Another one that’s kind of average, like no songs will make it on playlists for me or anything like that. Liked how it was recorded live and they kept the silly bits in between, that is perhaps the most charming and best quality of the album. ‘Green, Green Grass of Home’ was my favourite song of the album but then I will always have a soft spot for Tom Jones’ version of the song and is probably why it’s my favourite on the album. 3.5/5
Enjoyable enough, I guess. That song about jail buddies was a real eyebrow raiser.
Amazing piece of history but not something I'd listen to again.
Can't not love Johnny geeing up a room full of convicted felons but got a bit same same after a while.
Great storyteller
Very enjoyable, and a lot of fun. 3.5/5
San Quentin was better and had a better crowd. Don't know why they needed 2 of the same type of albums in the list.
Electric when it starts, slowed down with the joke songs.
A true country classic. Very solid live album, Johnny Cash has great chemistry with his audience which adds to my enjoyment of this album very much.
Not my type of music but it's easy to see why this album is so revered. Great live vocals, funny stage presence and the crowd at the prison was extremely into it. Not many standout songs to me because it's not my genre although I do appreciate the talented performance. Favorite Song: 25 Minutes to Go
Another interesting story but there's something about the way Johnny tells a story in each song. Certainly Folsom Prison Blues hits hard at the start and the whole record kept me engaged. 25 Minutes to Go is my favourite today.
i suppose as much as i don't want to you kind of have to classify cash as country music. which means there is country music i like, so its now harder to just slag off all country music for being dogshit. There's a lot of filler on here, but the context of it being played to a room full of men who've probably killed people makes it more interesting and somehow makes you listen to it from the perspective of a crim locked in a 60s american prison. so i reckon you could call this some wort of performance art then.
Was definitely on the nonce wing
On the one hand, this is actually fairly good. On the other, it's live, which is always a shame.
Country folk americano
Rollo
I prefer the San Quentin album. Still a good 'un
Classic Johnny Cash album that I had not listened to for many years. It is a fine album but a liitle boring as the songs sound a bit similar.
A good set of his best stuff at the time.
I think this is the second of 2 prison albums..... like.... did he play to the inmates? What kind of prisoners did the jail incarcerate? Can't imagine playing to an audience of murderers. Anyway. As live albums go, this is fine. Give my love to Rose being particularly poignant. Can't get away from the feeling that this album is most notable for where it was played rather than the recording itself
Cash is absolutely fine by me but I've never really been properly grabbed by his work. I suspect I'll enjoy it more in certain times/places/moods but at others less so. Not sure I'll stretch to 5 on it.

I’m just gonna say these boys in prison prob don’t want to hear a song about waiting to be hanged. Just play Boy Named Sue, John. Also the last Cash album I got on my list I listened to on the way to get my third COVID shot. So that’s still working well!
Coincidence or providence? Interesting that this LP came up for review today. I’m working in a job that I don’t particularly enjoy very much anymore, but I’m dependent on for paying the bills and carrying insurance and such; and, my marriage is completely broken to the point that my wife and I occupy the same house, but different rooms. We seldom eat together. Our conversation usually ends in a fight. I’m not technically in prison (and cannot begin to imagine the horrors of that atmosphere), but I do very much feel imprisoned by the consequences of my own bad, habitual behavior. Long story short: I was never taught, never mentored, never learned how to deal with adversity maturely, and instead unfortunately took it out on my wife in the form of emotional and verbal abuse. And I could feel it was going in a more physical direction if I didn’t get some help. I did, and am, but there’s been a lot of damage done, and there are consequences I must now bear. The chickens have come home to roost, as they say. So, in my own way, I listened to 'At Folsom Prison' as a prisoner, along with the rest of the live incarcerated audience on this recording. And the vast majority of these songs- I would categorize them as country blues- are about life in prison, including even death in prison, either by planned execution or in a failed escape attempt. Even the second to last cut, the country classic ‘Green, Green Grass of Home,’ concerns a poor fellow dreaming he’s back home only to awake and find he’s still in prison. The only way he’ll make it back home is when he’s dead and they lay his body to rest underneath that green, green grass . This is Johnny Cash at his most comfortable because of his own personal familiarity with prison life. These are truly his people, probably for the most part poor, uneducated, underprivileged, abused, traumatized, and genetically predisposed to things like alcoholism and drug abuse. The sort most of us model citizens wouldn’t want anything to do with. But the final song is when Johnny segues from entertainer to evangelist, and the audience becomes his congregation. The prison church, ‘Greystone Chapel,’ is described as ‘a flower of light in a field of darkness.’ And the lyricist testifies that ‘it’s given me the strength to carry one. Inside the walls of prison my body may be, but the Lord has set my soul free.’ One’s material body may be ‘stuck in Folsom prison,’ but one’s spirit does not have to share in the bondage. I’m reminded of the early disciples of Jesus who also found themselves imprisoned, sometimes severely beaten; but chose to sing hymns of thanksgiving and praise to God for the release of their spirits. Their inner freedom was universally expansive, far beyond the exterior movement restricted by chains and barred cells. God’s even in prison, too, Johnny shockingly testifies, and offers you a share in the salvation that has snuck in like a file smuggled in a loaf of bread. There is hope. Johnny Cash has never really been my bag. I appreciate the talent, but the music is pretty hokey and dated, and Cash’s nervous energy is, at times, distracting. And listening to this LP isn’t going to magically make my job better, nor will it miraculously save my marriage. It’s a very cold, snowy day today where I live, with most outside movement at a standstill. I’m currently stuck in my room, alone and lonely, isolated, abandoned, and looking through the blinds/bars across my window, contemplating how and why I ended up in this place. Like most prisoners, I want to cry foul, unjustly accused, and all that. But in my heart I know the truth. ‘I know I had it comin’,’ as Cash sings on the opening song. And having been tried and convicted I’m now serving my sentence, with no release in sight. But 'At Folsom Prison' does give me hope in the possibility of spiritual rehabilitation even while I’m paying off my debt.
ON DOWN TO SAAAINT ANTOOONE *The good suicide squad movie starts*
Better than I expected.
now i am admittedly not the biggest johnny cash fan, i think the concept of him singing at a prison is interesting but also makes me wonder if the recording of it is necessary. But that being said I do really enjoy the snippets of him interacting with the crowd which is usually something i dislike about live albums. Favourites on the album: Green, Green Grass of Home, Send a Picture to Mother, Jackson, Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog Overall its your classic run of the mill 1960s country album I would love a bit more production on the tracks for some distinction but also given the context of the album i think that the simplicity works fine. /bagcloud
was pretty good! pretty samey but I loved that it was a live version, you can hear how much it meant to the inmates. my fav track was the wall, I’ll definitely revisit this soon.
Really enjoyable but not even his best prison album, let alone studio work
Not as Fol of great tunes as the other one, but som good ones on here
Generic Johnny Cash
Fine. Interesting how the logistics/patter were kept. Don't think it'd be that way now.
Johny Cash voice is great. But that's jail music, about people in jail, he is trying to push some morals in songs, but crowd just cheering at all the wrong themes, like YEAH I KILLED MY WIFE TOO, OH DARN WHISKEY. Overall a great move from whoever decided to make a record with jail songs in jail
Great: 7/10
At the end of the day, it's a live Johnny Cash album, nothing much more to it. It has Johnny Cash, which is great, and it has aspects of live albums, of which I generally dislike. This album doesn't change either of those two things. Favorite track: Dark as the Dungeon
Good old country. Performing a concert in prison about all the ways one can break the law is a pretty neat PR idea.
Dont like Live albums
Great C&W sound... Outlaw without being outlaw.
This one is a little longer and has some slower stuff than "At San Quentin". This one just generally seems less rowdy. This version of Jackson with super growly June Carter is the best though.
Good stuff
Gangsta country - songs about committing crimes sung to actual criminals. How meta.
Twanger!!
power move to sing live at a prison and just diss the police
I would get country for my first album of this bruh. But this is older country and doesn't have what I hate about a lot of newer pop country. So first song in and I'm enjoying it a good amount.
It was pretty cool to hear Johnny Cash's performance to the inmates at Folsom. A performance I've always heard about but never took the time to listen to.
Johnny Cash's showmanship elevates this album to iconic status. Not necessarily representative of his best songwriting work.
Good for a live album. Nostalgic feeling for me in a way
Loved hearing the interaction with the prison audience. I found many of the songs very repetitive in form, but an entertaining record nonetheless. 3.5 rounded down
interesting, like it strangely
Johnny Cash is alright. Still not a fan of live albums. It's exactly what you expect. He sings, he interrupts the songs to laugh and ask for a drink of water. The inmates cheer. I'd rather hear a studio album. I love the fact that he records a new song at the end, written by one of the inmates.
Interesting to hear him get the prisoners on his side, unique take on a live album
Really enjoyable but not even his best prison album, let alone studio work ⭐️⭐️⭐️
lotsa train songs, then lotsa mournful songs It was all right.
Solid album, I do like his unique voice and incredible storytelling in his songs. However, his voice can get a bit repetitive as he doesn't always change up how he sounds (always sounds a bit solemn) so it can cause the songs to blend in with each other and lose their meaning when you listen to the full album straight.
.
Something warm and familiar with these standards. Not likely to listen much again, though.
Prefer live Cash stuff to the studio albums. The interaction with the crowd/prisoners brings it to life.
Enjoy a bit of Johnny. Can be too much of a good thing, but still enjoyable.
Rollo.
I respect Cash for his ability to connect with the audience and his showmanship but I’m not a fan of Country and this is pretty Deep South Country. Respect and Acknowledgement, but I wouldn’t seek it out to be honest
Good, but Very American. Likely to be loved by trump supporters.
Fun album from the prison, it’s interesting to hear them all having a good time
5
macht schon spaß to listen to -3
Funny
good times
3.5 - this is great. loads of charm and great atmosphere. awesome tunes
Songs Divorced Uncles Get Turnt Up To
He's the king of country. I can enjoy listening to it, but I don't seek it.
Now this I can understand being on the list!!
Anyone think it's a bit fucked how whenever he mentions murder or anything illegal all the boys in the crowd are like "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhh". A three more because of the iconic nature and event than the music. They do blend into one lots of the time.
I do enjoy Johnny Cash and respect his music. Not something that I just turn on though
sad lyrics. wont listen again
Something special
Not as bad as I thought it would be :)
As far into country and western as I’m willing to wander!
Really fun listening to his banter with the crowd (inmates!) and how composed his performance is around what seems like a fairly chaotic setting. I love the interruptions by the warden. However, I'm not a huge fan of the songs themselves, so this is something I would see as a curio, rather than a record I would return to often.
Honestly the commentary and bits in between (and sometimes the middle of the songs) were the main appeal, it made it like a story come to life! Not really my genre of music but I got into it the second time around, It got a sway or two out of me!
I like Johnny Cash but didn't think this was his best work. He laughed in the middle of 3 ballads and June came off as a ditzy country bumpkin. I enjoyed listening to the extended album with Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers more. At San Quentin was also better.
- Oh great, yet another Zio. I can't tell you if he'd change his mind these days, but, I mean, "Professor Shalom Goldman makes a strong case for Johnny Cash being the forerunner of the American Christian Zionist movement", his 5 trips to Israel, and "Cash's initial visit to the Israel in 1966 was followed by a trip with June in 1968 and developed into a lifelong project to serve as advocates for the State of Israel, even when such advocacy was unfashionable among American performing artists" is pretty damning on that front. Another boycott. - The positives: 1. his voice is cool, 2. there's a lot of humour and it's an interesting concept to sing upbeat prison songs to prisoners, and 3. he clearly has charisma. - The negatives: The songs all have the same honkey tonk sound, one of my least favourites, and they're mainly violent and misogynistic. - Also, his lack of range and very very bare bones, uninteresting instrumentation make nothing stand out, and the songs don't have any hooks (musically - they are only interesting topically and in terms of humour). So, even though the songs are short, it feels like the album goes on forever because every song is so same-y musically. - I appreciate banter at a live show, but it has to also be backed by good music, and this all just feels jokey. If I were in prison, I'd appreciate this as a break from prison life and because it feels like Johnny Cash was relating to me, but I'm not - I can listen to whatever I want, and the songs kind of suck.
Album no 6 Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (1968) Pleasant enough. Johnnys voice is obviously great. I can’t really pick out a favourite track.. maybe the green green grass of home. Not for me. The prison announcements for inmates to report to various places were interesting though.. EDIT- Greystone Chapel is probably the best track ⭐️⭐️
A step up from Willie Nelson in my view
Interesante, no está mal
Spokooo, nic szczególnego
San Quentin was much better.
Overall, decent.
I can appreciate how others can view this as one of the greatest albums of all time. I get it. And Johnny Cash is a legend. But I'm scoring on how I personally like the music and while Folsom Prison is a classic song, the album as a whole is not my jam.
Comically old fashioned
Me embolo
Not for me.
not my type of music. definitely a product of its time. 2/5
Country
I actually hate Johnny Cash. His music is just very stale to me and just watered down blues. Fuck you Johnny Cash
Oh boy, more country! Like with other albums I've had to listen through on the list, I can see the appeal but it's just really not my vibe. Obviously Mr. Cash is an icon and has incredible voice, it's just not a voice I'm rushing to put on.
Johnny Cash? More like Johnny ass. Nah I'm just kidding. Except not really. The music sucks, but the storytelling is pretty good.
Really not for me
🦅🇺🇸WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER ??!??! 🤠🦅💥🔫🐎
Initially i was thinking that i would have to be in a certain kind of mood to enjoy this music based off track 1 which isn’t a bad thing i was just so caught off guard. i actually really prefer the slower tracks on this album i think his voice suits that kind of mood better than the fast songs. I liked ‘i still miss someone’ i though that ‘cocaine blues’ was so odd lol the lyrics were crazy although ill give it to him he’s a great storyteller and performer i can tell the way he interacts with the audience and changes his voice to match the lyrics. I liked ‘send a picture of mother’. ‘the wall’ the entire theme of this album i find so cool although this genre of music i wouldn’t gravitate towards im glad i listened to it. wasn’t completely perfect to me but also not complete torture.
...
Not really my thing, a bit too classic rock and wouldn’t listen to his voice on a regular basis
I didn’t like it so much, too much like country music
idk man
more blues damn live recording is cool another chill one but generally very simple songs both blues songs and 25 minutes to go good
Green green grass of home...
didn't give it the fairest shot, can't imagine id enjoy it much more though
pretty dull. i'm sure it was good in person
A weird album - full of prison and gallows 'humour' folk songs played in front of prisoners. I'm not a real fan of folk rock music but this album isn't too bad to listen to.
Not much going on in this album really. Vocals are great and I love almost everything about them but although the melodies are nice, they got repetitive throughout the album. I liked the live atmosphere and lyricism about the Folsom Prison but sonically I had mild enjoyment. 4/10, Favorite Song: Cocaine Blues
Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues,
Only knew the first song (im young okay 😂). No songs really stood out for me, not really my style of music aswell. A sunny saturday morning classic though and gave me a good mood
1. Folsom Prison Blues: it’s pretty good. not really my style but it is cachy. 5/10 2. Dark as the Dungeon: surprisingly, i enjoy it more than the last one. 7/10. 3. I Still Miss Someone: the depth of the lyrics is lowkey what i like most about it. 8/10. 4. Cocaine Blues: actually really like it ngl. the beat and the aesthetic of the song is great. 8/10. 5. 25 Minutes to Go: it’s a great song i just don’t like it as much. 5/10. 6. Orange Blossom Special: same as the last one. 5/10. 7. The Long Black Veil: it’s a slow song but it is really good. 8/10. 8. Send a Picture of Mother: i like this song. again, this album is not really my style. 7/10. 9. The Wall: a good song, too. the storytelling is great. 6/10. 10. Dirty Old Egg-Suckin’ Dog: again, not too much of my style. 6/10. 11. Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart: the references are great. it is just, once again, not my style. 6/10. 12. Jackson: the start is great. the harmony that both voices make scratches my head. not my style but catchy. 7/10. 13. Give My Love to Rose: genuinely sad asf. i really liked it. 8/10. 14. I Got Stripes: i liked it. the beat is catchy. 8/10. 15. Green, Green Grass of Home: i really liked the plottwist. 8/10. 16. Greystone Chapel: didn’t like it as much. 6/10.
Love the atmosphere and the story in the songs, it's just not my kind of music. Favorite song: Cocaine Blues.
feels very popeye for some reason
An element of excitement runs through this record. Largely due to the circumstances of recording and less so to the actual songs. They are a tad pedestrian. Not a fan of johnny cash on stage with other voices as his becomes diminished. All in all more of a historical monument than an enjoyable experience.
