Not much of an Aerosmith fan.. didn't knock my socks off
Solid album
Didn't feel like prime Aerosmith. Apart from Last Child, I found it a bit tedious tbh. Like they just slapped together an album in a few weeks, decided, "Yeah, that's good enough," and got back on the partying. A lot of this some of rock also hasn't aged well imo. Feels almost like a parody.
It's alright, I don't think it's representative of mainstream Aerosmith, but it's fine listening. Just not very memorable.
Short and sweet(ish). Just squeaks over half an hour, but nothing particularly memorable. Like Tim said above, I knew a fair few Aerosmith songs before listening, but none of these. Won't listen to many again, but I did like the last one (I do have a weakness for schmaltzy cheesy rock ballads though). 2/5.
Hair metal is one of my least favorite genres and this album continues to confirm that trend

Fine while I was listening but not a lot of staying power. Perhaps one of those "you had to be there" albums.
White boys rarely get this funky, so respect these horny greasers, whose sole purpose is to rivatalise your ass cheeks with the meanest boogie oogie woogie this side of the Stones. Just 35 minutes, but they're so tight--and every lick, riff, break and bridge so lean--that these songs feel like they last forever.

Aerosmith‘a 4th and influential album. Classic 70s rock. Bit before my time, not really my thing but ok…
I enjoy the mellow production especially given its a hard rock album. Guitar parts are awesome. Lacks big songs, but enjoyable for a fan of rock music.

Well, wasn't that a surprise. Aerosmith does indeed Rocks. I'll be honest, I only really knew the band from their 'MTV-years' and never really had taken the time to listen to their back catalog because of it. Something I wished I knew before I was in my 40's

Solid album, really love the last track.
It's been a long time since I really listened to this band, and I'm very glad I gave this album a complete and thorough listen. I was already familiar with most of these songs, but hearing each track without distraction I am reminded what a great rock band Aerosmith is, and this album is fantastic. Such rockin' energy and creativity and each musician is superb. 70s rock, classic rock, blues rock, and all that, sure, it's a super-crowded space and it was almost all I heard for years growing up in the 70s and 80s -- plus, these days I listen to a much wider variety of music -- but this album still stands out. Very impressive.
dad rock again
I quite Aerosmith, but this wasn't very inspiring
Liked a couple of tracks but struggling to see why this album made the list. Mostly pretty standard rock; not as interesting as Toys In The Attic.

Aerosmith’s cute every once in a while, but kind of wear on me during the course of an entire album
A classic. Their first five albums rank up there with any of the other great bands. They should have stopped recording after Draw The Line. Everything after that fifth album was either passable or recorded just so they could cash the checks.
Great album…. Big high school hit…played at many of our school dances
After going to Disney, this is a great album to listen to. They have their own rock and roller coaster ride that we did twice and it was great. This album isn't one of my favorites, but has some classics on there like back in the saddle. Forever, Aerosmith will remind me of their guitar hero game.
Not my favorite from Aerosmith, but still a really good album. I enjoy their music in general so this is a good time. A couple recognizable hits and some solid deep cuts. Can't wait for Toys in the Attic to pop up on here. Favorite tracks: Sick as a Dog, Last Child, Rats in the Cellar. Album art: I've always liked this one. Simple and effective. I got a ton of them diamonds too. 3.5/5
As with their other work, it is pretty good.
Hearing full albums & not just the singles has really added to this 1001 journey. Not every Aerosmith song is a classic, but they're pretty consistent. Lyrically, always great.
This LP is mercifully brief, as will be this review. Things started off well enough, musically, with two of Aerosmith’s big hits from the first half of their career: ‘Back In The Saddle,’ and ‘Last Child.’ If only the lyrics could have matched the music. The first song featured rock’s tired-est, saddest stereotype involving the lonely, thirsty, horny traveler whose issues are solved in a saloon and a one night stand; and the second, a dream involving the remembrance of younger days, when the band was lonely, and thirsty, and horny. And these were two of the more erudite lyrical offerings the boys offered. Things went downhill fast from here on out. I’m certain that Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry must have had some childhood trauma that went unattended and, exacerbated by their prodigious drug abuse, it stunted their emotional maturity. Thus, lyrics like, ‘… hot tail poon tang sweetheart…’ I loathe this LP for two reasons: Firstly, it’s trite. And secondly, the final cut, “Home Tonight,’ gave us a glimpse into the future direction Aerosmith was headed, with all those sappy rock ballad numbers that have dominated the second half of their career. The sober half. Proving that Aerosmith on drugs is actually better than Aerosmith off drugs. But both Aerosmiths still suck. Curiously, Kurt Cobain, James Hetfield, and Slash are among many who cite 'Rocks' as one of their favorite and seminally influential LPs (in Slash’s case inspiring him to learn guitar.) So, something good came of it. Aerosmith lead guitarist, Joe Perry, calls it the ultimate garage band record. I find that an insult to the entire garage band genre, of which I happened to be quite fond. You could take a rock and chunk it at a pile of discount dollar bin LPs at your local record store and hit any number of garage bands that rock better and cleverer and, frankly, with more fun, than Aerosmith: Count Five, ? and the Mysterians, the Sonics, the Troggs, to name a few. Then retrieve that same rock and smash any copy of this LP you come across from here on out. Even with a generous share of teenage ignorance at the tender age of 17, I had already moved on from Aerosmith’s debut LP (their only good one) to other bands by the time 'Rocks,' their fourth was released. You should too, unless the only thing you’ve got rumbling around in that noggin of yours are a bunch of rocks.

I haven't listened to any Aerosmith from this early in their career before, I don't think. Eh, it was ok. I didn't find anything objectionable, but then my attention also seemed to completely slide off it. Took three listens to pick out a fave track, and even then my impressions remain indistinct... Fave track - "Nobody's Fault", I guess...

i suspect, but cannot prove, that the time most people first encounter aerosmith is around 7th or 8th grade. this is kind of perfect, because for the most part their music has about an 8th grade mentality - very fitting. i knew a couple of these tracks because they showed up on their greatest hits - which i discovered in, of course, about 7th grade. i can see why the others weren't included - they're, y'know, fine, they just don't really stand out all that much. overall, i'm just glad this was a quick album

Back in the Saddle - Classic. Last Child - Absolutely slaps. Solid drum groove, amazing intro, allman brother style guitarmony, amazing vocals (obviously). Rats In the Cellar - Really driving beat. Killer guitar. New York City blues. Combination - Love the ride cymbal and fuzz guitar. Sick As a Dog - Nobody's Fault - Not super into it, big ol guitar solo fade out. Get the Lead Out - Syncopation to rock the nation.

Way better than better than my small mind imagined
So many great guitar licks, iconic baselines, Tyler's patented wail, double entendres... 70's rock at its finest. A welcome break from the last few very intellectual albums I was served up. You don't have to think about Aerosmith, it just grabs you and drags you out to have a good time.

Back in the saddle is fun enough. Aerosmith have a better ear for funk and soul type rhythm than most heavy rock bands. Rats in the Cellar is a fun Thin Lizzy style stomper. After these two though, it's not the most exciting album. I feel like Aerosmith are another singles band. The rest of the album is far from bad, but not that exciting.

I likes it just a bit more than I thought I would. The first two tracks really aren't that terrible, not all that good either. There's some admirable guitar playing on this album but the vocals annoyed the shit out of me. Somehow better than expected, but as highly doubt that I will ever listen to this again.

80. Rocks - Aerosmith 9 tracks. Considering this goes back to 1976 it's no surprise that it's quite raw, (in a good way). It's punchy as you would expect, but you still see glimpses of Tyler's slowed down vocals/hook that they used to great effect later on. Very good. 👍 4/5

Better on second listen but still a bit meh. It’s a good rock album and see where Aerosmith got it’s cred as a band.
Again, I'm learning how much more I seem to enjoy classic hard rock than I thought. "Back in the Saddle" is an awesome triumphant anthem. I love the teasing intro, the growly bass line, and Steven Tyler's yodeling. "Last Child" gets bluesy and funky, and rhymes "south Tallahassee" with "sweet sassafrassy." You know we got "Rats in the Cellar"? This one is rockin' and chaotic. I like the duet of voices in "Combination." And the rest, as the title says, Rocks. It feels like rock 'n' roll oughta.
I am familiar with Aerosmith, but not this album. I don't believe that I had heard any tune on the album previously. It did sound like Aerosmith...no surprises... Although I don't find myself seeking out an Aerosmith album for a listen all that often, there are a some songs that caught my ear and I am likely to revisit the album in the future.
Aerosmith! Yay! I don't know this album. (Is it just me or does the cover look cheap?) I love the build at the beginning of Back in the Saddle and there are some horse noises I've never noticed before...and some yodeling! Last Child is one of the songs that defines Aerosmith for me --- an edgy, hard-rocking blues sound where Steven Tyler gets to sing and screech. The rest of the songs are totally new to me. I do love Combination --- the lyrics have some clever rhymes and the chorus is hella catchy. When Nobody's Fault started, I had to check to see if I was still listening to Aerosmith. It's more heavy metal than blues-rock. Get the Lead Out is fun. (But why are you showing me your fist? is it to show off your new finger tattoos?) I love me a song with some na, na, na's, like Lick and a Promise. Home Tonight is a nice piano-heavy power ballad whose melody made me think of Chicago's Saturday in the Park. This was great fun!
Awesome album. Most of the older Aerosmith stuff I know were the Greatest Hits, so the first two tracks were expectedly great (love the whinnying and clip clops in the opening of “Back in the Saddle”). The rest of the album I wasn’t so familiar with, but I loved it all! The four times I listened to it today had me digging all the songs. It’s Aerosmith. I should have been listening to this album for most of life.

Nostalgic. Prefer greatest hits albums for Aerosmith. Back in the Saddle is a good opener with a high-tempo glammish sound. Last Child has a really kicking bass rhythm and the vocals, whilst not as impressive as some songs, give it that typical Aerosmith. Rats in the Cellar could be a Guilty Gear BGM. Fuck me! Aerosmith are a lot older than i realized. Although it seems time hasn't improved their sound. This is actually really decent classic rock. Like the Bluesy rock guitar licks a lot. Less cliched then their later stuff and Tyler's vocal doesn't dominate as much. A surprisingly high 4/5
This album definitely rocks and a lot better than I expected. Not a favourite as the middle of the album dips in quality, especially Nobody's Fault. But the bookends of this (first three, last three songs) were fantastic. Back in the Saddle and Home Tonight were my favourites.
There's way better Aerosmith albums than this one.

Sounds exactly like I expected an Aerosmith album to sound. Heavy-ish guitars, harmonies, non specific lyrics about girls and life. Neither offensive but interesting to me.
I'm more familiar with 80s/90s Aerosmith, less familiar with this album. It was alright, digging the guitars!
So this is how they rocked before I was born eh? Well, went into this with all kind of biases (blame Love in an Elevator for that) but this is a great album, full of actual rock music rather than screaming anthems. Top stuff.
Fairly timeless boogie rock with a hard edge, but not heavy like Deep Purple, Sabbath, etc.

För mycket testosterondrypande brösbehåringsrock för min smak. Dagen jag parkerar en Camaro Iroc i garaget (jag påstår inte att det inte kommer hända!) så kanske den ligger som kasettband i handsfacket. Annars, nä.

9th November 2021 Listened on my headphones while working on the sofa. Day that I pitched the CC Community which went well, saw Spencer then went to 384 which was really nice. Very middle of the road, few stand out tracks but not too bad.

I got a lot of guns and roses and even some nirvana vibes from this album. It’s not the most memorable rock album I’ve ever heard and it has a couple stand out songs. Always hated back in the saddle though. Fav song: sick as a dog

Det är ett väldigt kort album på bara en dryg halvtimme och det ligger på i bakgrunden under en tågresa, medan jag gör något annat. För mig är det ingen låt som riktigt sticker ut utan det hela flyter ihop lite grann och känns också som att det tar slut väldigt fort. Det lämnar mig lite svarslös på hur bedömning ska gå till, egentligen skulle jag nog behöva lyssna igenom det en gång till men känner ingen större dragningskraft till att göra det. Faktumet att det i mitt huvud flyter ihop lite grann tänker jag klassa som en positiv faktor. Man är ju ändå ett stort fan av konceptalbum. Men överlag inte något som lämnar några stora avtryck. I just really hate Aerosmi
This is the second album that I have reviewed for Aerosmith as part of this list, even though it was suggested first. I've heard plenty of Aerosmith, including 3 or 4 whole albums, but none of the tracks on this album were familiar. I think I have developed an opinion about Aerosmith over time. In the past, there are albums that I would listen to, but I think I'm done. I did not like the album.

The same guy that named the Tesla’s S, 3, X and Y must’ve named this album. I get it, Aerosmith Rocks, you are so clever. Unlike the Tesla models, the album name is accurate. Say what you want about Stephen Tyler’s lips, but they breath some great sound into this album that’s otherwise filled to the rim with smash-it-all, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll guitar. It’s hard to identify another mid 70’s alblum filled with so much losely tied cacophony in one spot. In fact, I think this was the last great rock album before the music industry fell in love with glam rock, poodle-heads and power ballads. Though this isn’t a daily listen album, I truly enjoyed the truth in advertising.
"Rocks" is one of three Aerosmith albums on the list. There is one other from their very productive 70s, and "Pump" from 1989. In that, they stand out from other classic rock bands in the career revitalization they experienced in the 1990s. And that's without even including "Get a Grip" (1993) on the list, and it is their best-selling album. In fact, why is "Get a Grip" left out? Half the album were hits, and their Liv Tyler/Alicia Silverstone-fueled videos created a whole new generation of Aerosmith fans. "Rocks" opens with the track I knew best - "Back in the Saddle" - with great arena-ready classic rock energy. "Last Child" sounds familiar, and delivers some blues stylings before a break to a great Joe Perry guitar solo. The rest was unfamiliar, and mostly just ok. Not great. No hidden gems really stand out from the pack. "Nobody's Fault" was kinda bad. Overall "Rocks" was a surprise, and not in a good way - I expected more.
I like Aerosmith fine, in a "Greatest Hits" kind of way. None of those on this album (yes, I know "Back in the Saddle" was big for them, but it's certainly not one of their greatest.) I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of funk on Last Child and wish more of the album would have gone there. I don't think that if I didn't know this was Aerosmith, I would have taken any notice or thought the band would have amounted to much.
This album is full of thoroughly mediocre rock music. It’s fine as the background music in a main street Nashville club. There is some good guitar work on here, but I expected more from early Aerosmith.

Wow, I've never considered myself an Aerosmith fan, but I've got to hand it to them here. This is a solid album, full of fun, bluesy, dirty little rockers. It's the stuff the that made Aerosmith famous and is still totally playable today. Perry's licks are perfection and you can feel Tyler's charisma coming right through your speakers. There's a reason these guys have lasted so long. "Back in the Saddle" and "Last Child" rock, full stop, a perfect pair to start this album with. "Nobody's Fault" is surprisingly heavy (both musically and lyrically), love it. "Home Tonight" is a sweet way to close it out, and hints at those juggernaut pop hits we would get from the band in the 80s and 90s. Fave songs: Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Nobody's Fault, Home Tonight
Aerosmith represent a total lack of new ideas or willingness to push boundaries
An up tempo rock album that sounds distinctively Aerosmith. Thought I'd hate it after the first track, but it improved after that and, despite predictable vocal melodies, it's fine, if a little samey and uninteresting. For some reason it evokes a feeling of being chased through a city in a film, including sneaking a bit and looking back around a corner at the pursuer before running again. Basically it's TV chase music. 2.5/5
Always have a soft spot for Aerosmith. Easy to forget the amazing guitar work that's overshadowed by the charismatic vocals, but this is a solid classic rock album that hits all the right buttons for me. Might be my favorite of there's, too.

I couldn't listen to this, not because of any technical problem, or from a lack of time, but more because I dislike Aerosmith a great deal.
This will be a tough putt, since I absolutely despise Aerosmith's late 80's/early '90's output so much that it compels me to take a pass on their entire catalog. The first 2 songs here are classics, especially Back In The Saddle. That song alone takes this from a 2.5 to a 3. Hey, I like this A LOT more than Bon Jovi!
Too relentlessly "rockin'" for my tastes. I'm not an Aerosmith fan, but I do have respect for their earlier material. But of their early album I think this is my least favorite. 3 🌟
Good to go back and remember when Aerosmith were a proper hard rock band. Having said that I do think this is a bit overrated although I'm sure it would have been great to hear live (if they were sober enough!)

Good, I like old Aerosmith
It happened
Aerosmith has an unmistakable sound and this album show cases it very well. Each song stands alone but contributes to the whole seamlessly. There were more than a handful of times during this album listen that made me perk up and got my attention.
Never really vibes with Aerosmith. Some of the intros to these tracks are good but then I just lose interest like 30 seconds in. It’s just not hitting for me.
Great rock and roll album! Much better than the pop-rock they produced in the 90s.

I'm on a string of albums making me think maybe 1001 is too many in terms of a review of canon. This is a fine Aerosmith album, but I'd bet it's not even their best one. Maybe others would disagree. I'm ok with this one, but not in love.

Robert Demery aimant jouer le hipster et fin connaisseur de la musique, ce petit malin s'est contenté de selectionner trois albums d'Aerosmith dans sa liste, dont deux qu'absolument personne ne connait. Néammoins, les chats ne faisant pas des chiens, l'album est evidemment excellent. Le vrai problème vient d'une information qui m'a été succurée a l'oreille par mon camarade l'humble robbouder: cet album n'aura reçu qu'une note de 3.15 de la part des fans, qui ont préféré sauver Quentin Mosimann en appelant au 3640. Une preuve de plus que vous qui me lisez ne connaissez rien à la musique, retournez sacraliser l'orgue inaudible de Manzarev et autres albums moyens qui vous donnent l'impression d'avoir une culture musicale.
The shadow of "Toys in the Attic" still loomed large, but Aerosmith found a good sound with their blend of blues and honky tonk as instrumentals too over even more of this album.

Of course I've heard their well-known hits plenty of times, but I never listened to an Aerosmith song outside of their hits before today. Turns out it's a lot better than I would have expected! Easy 4

Very classic rock sound but doesn't really feel like Aerosmith until the last few songs. Overall enjoyable with a strong first half.

You can't not like Aerosmith. This is rather good, doesn't sound at all aged. These guys are fun, always, and this album is fun.

Standard Aerosmith sounding songs that didn’t really differ from one to the next. Inoffensive and pretty forgettable.
Heavier than I was expecting, which is good obviously. It's quite sleazy too, can imagine it playing in an American dive bar. I liked it as a whole album although there weren't really any standout tracks or megahits. Not surprised in the slightest that it influenced Guns n Roses and Motley Crue. 7/10

It’s cool... but when I hear the word Aerosmith I want classics! I reckon if I was alive at the time I’dve loved it, but now it feels like also-rans of that generation. Sick guitars and drums. But overall it can walk that way 👉🗑
Intro to Back in the Saddle is a great hype for the album, everything else was solid but nothing spectacular
Many of these songs were staples of my HS years - especially “Back in the Saddle” which was mandatory pre-game fire-up music for our SW conference football games. “Last Child” was another mixtape favorite. The rest of the album is pretty solid 70s rock n roll: “Nobody’s Fault” - great tune - although “Combination” and “Get the Lead Out”are pretty forgettable tracks. Gotta love the guitars and the plaintive wail of Steven Tyler’s voice on Home Tonight (which was probably the inspiration for “Home Sweet Home” by MogleyvCrue. Anyone else contemplate how “Rats in the Cellar” seems to reference Splinter from the TMNTs?

Aerosmith invented Screamo, change my mind. Lots of big yelling, lots of testosterone, and lots of rock. I was taken to an Aerosmith concert when I was younger fully expecting to hate it because it was a dad band, but just like this album I was pleasantly surprised. It isn't necessarily my jam but I can see how in the 70s that this was some serious hard rock. Very entertaining but not really inspiring.

This is one of the Aerosmith albums I'd never listened to before. This was pretty rocking. I liked it more than most of their recent stuff and better than their first two albums. Very short at about 30 mins so it's a quick listen. There's some tracks I'd be happy to listen to again. Nobody's Fault is a song I'd never heard before. The closing solo is good. Not the best guitar solo I've ever heard but good for them.
Great album, though I would put Toys In The Attic well ahead of this one.

A classic rock album you can't go wrong with
I was expecting to dislike this a lot more than I did. I have some premeditated distaste for Aerosmith, as cheesy bad rock. But I think that must come from distillations of late success band, Steven Tyler being weird, etc. this album rocked hard I loved the clear bluesy licks and rhythms. Still not a fave, but a clear step towards hard rock of the later 70s and 80s that I am more fond of. Way to prove me wrong, Aerosmith!
Similar feelings to my thoughts about the Aerosmith album that I had to listen to the other day. Mostly meh guitar rock with a few standouts.
File under: Worth a listen for historical considerations. I'm not a complete Aerosmith hater. I still remember back in my second year of college, one of my roommates and I decided to buy new cassettes for the 4 hour drive home. We weren't allowed to own or listen to any rock tapes at our college, so we embraced the opportunity to rock out on our way home. He bought Def Leppard; I bought an Aerosmith compilation heavy on the 90s hits. I still listen to those once in a while. I can enjoy a brief list of 70s and early 80s 'smith hits. For a record as a whole, though, this one wears thin pretty quickly for me, especially compared to so many other fantastic mid-70s records.
2.5 | No soy gran fan de Aerosmith... pero les tengo el debido respeto por los años y lo que les conozco. En realidad solo conozco los discos de Toys in the Attic y Pump que me gustan bastante y supongo vendrán en la lista (ah y el disco de la portada de Marilyn Monroe robot que salió por ahí del 2000 que se me hacía una basura). Leí un poco y la gente alaba mucho este trabajo y yo... no entiendo. De verdad siento que cualquiera de los otros dos discos que mencioné (que asumo de menos esos dos estarán en la lista) se llevan de calle a este tanto en calidad como en relevancia histórica, no le veo necesidad de estar en la lista ni de que hubiera tantos discos de Aerosmith en ella. La sensación que me da el álbum es que saben cómo hacer que una canción de tres y medio minutos parezca que dura ocho minutos. Casi todas las canciones tienen un break o un final instrumental innecesario que simplemente alarga todo innecesariamente. Cuando tomamos que el álbum es de solo 35 minutos , me pregunto si lo estaban usando como relleno por sacar cualquier cosa. Hay otro detalle en la producción y es que todo (incluida la voz) se oye al mismo nivel y todo se medio mezcla y pierde en mi tan odiado wall of sound (aunque no a niveles tan malos como los que mencioné en otros discos). Es un album... cumplidor que no suena terrible pero no veo qué hace aquí como trabajo conjunto. Last Child me gusta bastante.
Dos o tres vueltas y no me enganchó. Back in the Saddle y Sick as a Dog son las mejores pero en general se me hizo muy equis el disco. Vaya, está bien y hasta ahí.

3.5 | Tuve mi época de oír mucho Aerosmith y todavía hoy me echo el disco de éxitos con gusto, pero creo que este disco en particular nunca lo había oído con atención. No me parece el mejor de ellos pero al menos no está lleno de sus canciones más quemadas en los 90 que todas son refritos unas de otras. Buen rock setentero en toda su extensión: guitarras distorsionadas, solos, coros pegajosos, etc. pero hasta ahí.
Definitely a snapshot of the state of pop rock in that era.

Back in the Saddle is a jam. I've never listened to a full Aerosmith album, and this was enjoyable for sure. It did feel like a stereotypical 'rock' album, for better or for worse. It did feel sort of like I've heard some of these songs before even though I haven't. Overall fun and would listen to again. Would probably give a 3.5, but rounded up.

Never been a huge Aerosmith fan. Some decent tracks, a lot of bluesy stuff, but just not totally up my alley.
I liked the guitars but the songwriting itself was just okay for me.
This is a rock album, and it doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not. I found myself a little annoyed by Tyler's voice, and none of the songs gave me anything to write home about. However, I have a soft spot for this era of music and can understand its appeal. I did appreciate the tasteful use of piano in the closing track. I wish touches like that were more common: They are reminders that there's no need to separate pop appeal from musical attention. Of course, respect for tradition is not an inherent virtue in my account; But Aerosmith is far from avant-garde and I'm rambling now.
