Competent but clichéd hair rock.

Another Aerosmith album, and this time, I don't recognize a single song on it? Maybe they should have just thrown in some Scorpions instead at this point. Well, at least it's short.

That was fine. Good rock. Nothing notable.

Hate to rate it a 3 but I've never been the biggest Aerosmith fan.

I like it because it’s got groove and funk. It’s also only ok because the songs aren’t that great compared to the hits. It’s something I’d listen to but wouldn’t intentionally put on.

Aerosmith's last great album before falling into relative obscurity until Run DMC pulled them out of the ashes in '86.

It's better than I thought it would be, given that I didn't really recognize any of the songs in the chart listing, even the singles. Not to say I don't like Aerosmith, but they once again showed not to judge their book by their cover. Still, the album is flawed. What it does well is bring some heavy, crunchy sounds - especially guitar. You can hear it on songs like Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Rats in the Cellar and Sick as a Dog - maybe even Get the Lead Out or Lick and a Promise. Like a precursor to hard rocks like Motorhead. But other songs were just kind of off - not bad, just not clicking the way the others did. So 4 songs I really dug, 3 not so much, and 2 I'm not quite sure. It feels like the album is at best a 3.5 and I just don't know if I can put it up there with other 4's.

I knew Back in the Saddle, but never knew the name. Sick as a Dog is my favorite track. Objectively a good album, but like most stuff from the 70's not my style.

Back in the saddle is probably one of my favorite all time rock n roll songs. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't really keep up and is pretty on par with any other rock album from the 70s

Not Aerosmith's best (not sure if I've heard any of these songs before), but not bad.

Rocks is the fourth album by American rock band Aerosmith. This hard rock album released to mixed critical reviews and commercial success and was certified platinum off preorders alone - it has since gone quadruple platinum. Modern reviews rate this album highly as one of Aerosmith's best. Rocks was released during the peak of Aerosmith's touring in the mid 70's so it performed well and inspired many other artists including Guns N' Roses, Metallica, and Nirvana. I thought Rocks - although heavy and rockin' - was just more of the same Aerosmith songs from their previous album. I know not all bands are going to evolve and release something experimental, and it was still good at the end of the day. If you're a fan of rock n' roll, then you'll love this Aerosmith album.

I am indifferent

I grew up listening to heavy metal, but never Aerosmith. American bands like them or Kiss and so on just never really appealed on the other side of the Atlantic. This was OK though. Better than I feared it might be anyway. Enough bits of blues and boogie to make it listenable to, although I probably won't seek out any more of it.

Not their best but Back in the Saddle elevates this.

this is an actually pretty good rock n roll album. good and hard guitar tones. crispy and light. killer bass lines. the lead song and single is just a downright good song. aerosmith is supposed to be campy trash. but this album, no. this is what acdc wishes it was. big while avoiding themoitfalls of cornball dumbness and guitar. you can tell they listened to a stooges album or two.

Definitely Aerosmith, didn't have any of the hits (that I know) but exactly the formula I expected. Runtime is short enough to enjoy it all the way through but can't say I wanted any more. It was alright, Aerosmith are alright, next album please.

The lyrics are a bit silly and earnest, but it really isn't as bad as I was fearing. Quite funky. Rats in the Cellar was probably my favourite. Would I go back? No.

I don't hear anything that makes this album distinct or innovative comparatively to Toys in the Attic, which is already on the list. Back in the Saddle is a bitchin' opener, sure. But Aerosmith isn't exactly known for being poetically, lyrically, or musically significant in any real way. They're just a bunch of hard partying dudes having a good time and making mediocre music in the process. It's fine, but it's not special. 90's revival/sellout Aerosmith at least gave us some iconic music videos.

Some good riffage, and it services it's purpose of teenager cock rock reasonably successfully. But it's dull...

Enjoyable rock (possibly bordering on hard rock), but I don't think it's very memorable

It's not a bad listen, but it is fairly generic mid-seventies rock that other bands did considerably better. Kind of like the Stella Artois of this kind of stuff, no-one will object to a pint of it without being especially thrilled to see it's the only thing on offer.

Too much butt, not enough rock.

Underwhelming, if I'm honest. A lot of the tracks sounded really similar. I enjoyed some of the solo guitar stuff, but I could not replay this album and be fine with it. They didn't seem to find their sound with this one.

Had a great rock sound but on first listen nothing brilliant outside of a nice rock playlist, on it's own i'm not sure I could pick song that had a lot of individuality.

Nice artwork. Gives you the idea that you're in for a nice hard rock ride--one that's gonna push all your buttons if you're up to that sort of thing. But does that cover hold all of its promises? "Back In The Saddle" and "Last Child" have slick main riffs and a mean groove, I'm not gonna lie. "Rats In The Cellar" then accelerates the pace, but to no great effect, unfortunately, this track being a meat-and-potatoes hard boogie rocker that doesn't sound very fresh or original. Besides, Steven Tyler's vocals sound weird on this one, buried in the mix as they are... "Combination" then heads back to the sleazy rhythms of the first two tracks, yet it doesn't really add anything relevant to the whole picture. "Sick Of The Dog", the track that follows, is far more memorable, though. It's the third highlight of the album, with an effective and lively outro section. "Nobody's Fault" then attempts to imitate Led Zeppelin--with various results depending on which moment of the song you're talking about, but still quite successfully overall. Next, the boogie routine returns with "Get The Lead Out"--the word "boogie" being even quoted in the lyrics. Said routine can wear your patience a little thin at this point, at least depending on the mileage you have on those types of hard rock shenanigans. However, the outro section, with its long droning sound, is interesting--it's as if Aerosmith chose the option radically opposite to your usual solo-driven conclusion, and it's a choice that aged well, I think. "Get the Lead Out" is not a highlight, sure, but it's still ten times better than the stinker that pops up right after it, "Lick And A Promise", a cheesy, hackneyed cut going "na na na na" at the end. Quite annoying. And how many times are you gonna repeat the word "boogie", Steven? Finally, "Home Tonight" ticks the necessary hard-rock-ballad box, but the song is unfortunately far less moving and far more mundane and "functional' than stellar "Dream On" on Aerosmith's debut. Speaking of other Aerosmith recordings, I noticed that *Rocks* is not even among the most popular albums the band released on Spotify. If casual fans don't go to that one that much, does that mean that contemporary rock critics were actually right to point out this record was still some sort of post-breakthrough slump? Let's see... Four highlights, pretty good but not the stuff legendary rockers are made of, five middling tracks, and one clear stinker... This, out of nine songs, doesn't scream "essential" to me. And side two is quite a slog to go through, even if this LP is short. I'd rather listen to a greatest hits album, to be honest. 3/5. Always loved 70s rock but always felt that Aerosmith were just overshadowed by other bands. I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Really good bass lines throughout, strong guitar, and impressive vocals. Song lyrics and direction could be a more creative. Everything is good, but nothing is mind blowing. 3/5 Favorites: Back in the Saddle, Rats in the Cellar, Combination, Least Favorites: Get the Lead Out, Lick and a Promise

It's fairly proficient mid-70's rock. Slightly Glam and played with a swagger. Also pretty safe- no rough edges and an enjoyable listen. Nothing special though.

Wait, Aerosmith did something other than "Dream On" in the '70s? That's... interesting. Especially knowing that it's hard rock and not power ballad as I expected. Still, not as impressive as it is fascinating. Decent, but quite generic.

A consistent rock album throughout but to me the songs were quite monotonous and sounded really similar to each other.

Rocks is a gritty and powerful record that showcases the band's musicianship and songwriting prowess. Released in 1976, the album features a raw and unpolished sound that captures the band's bluesy, hard-rocking style. One of the highlights of the album is the ballad "Home Tonight," which showcases Tyler's soulful singing and the band's ability to deliver a powerful, emotional performance. Good, straight forward

Quite like the younger Tyler's voice and his range is impressive without sounding like a banshee. Interesting to read that there was a LOT of drugs involved in this album. A very coherent album without the mess you'd expect of a drug-addled production. Quite short too, which is nice. The longest song is under 4:30 long. Surprising that this went platinum on release and eventually QUADRUPLE platinum, obviously buoyed by their prolific touring and live fanbase, it's good but not that good. Very genre-classic galloping riffs, call and response vocals, chunky pub rock chord sequences, bit of Zep influence, bit of Maiden influence, bit of scuzzy mid-70s NWOBHM. Probably best enjoyed drunk at a concert.

A decent party record, with swagger to spare. The rhythm section is probably the strongest element.

Pretty good classic rock. I feel like they deserve some props for their pop sensibility and having the decency to keep the album under 35 minutes. I’m also pretty sure there was only one guitar solo on the whole album. Who’da thunk it?

What's to say about this one. It's another Aerosmith album, which means that it both has some really good songs on it as well as a bunch of generic blues rock. It's not bad, but if someone put this record on a party I would listen for the first two songs and then spill beer all over the record player 3/5

This was decent, I guess early Aerosmith is better than the later stuff where Tyler’s voice sounds like a wailing cat. Joe Perry was great on this and my favourite moments may have been Tyler’s harmonica bits. Sick as a Dog was a creepy weird tune, maybe I misread what it was about but I doubt it. The closing track Home Tonight is one of the few rock ballads I enjoyed. Decent album, 3 stars

I didn't expect a band like Aerosmith, which is known for "Dream On" and Armageddon songs to have such a diverse and mature album, especially this early in their career. If I would listen to this album without knowing what it is, I would guess The Rolling Stones. The record has inspired many band and artists, like Kurt Cobain or Slash. What is the reception right now? In my opinion - rather unspectacular. The songs on the album are very much infused in 70s hard rock style. Plenty of blues/rock riffs, some really great guitar solos and surprisingly good vocal by Steven Tyler (whom I remember only as an old man). I'm not a big fan of this album, or of this band at all. It was fun to listen to this piece of history, but to be frank, its place is in the books on the shelf now. That's all.

6/10. I actually liked this album, but was disappointed it didn't have more to do with rocks. Also the first song was fucking miserable, why does he have to shriek like a Nazgûl every few seconds? Is the song about the black riders of Sauron getting back in the saddle? I doubt it, and I'm not going to relisten to find out.

The album is 35 minutes which is perfect. I knew a couple of the songs. The album is classic Aerosmith: loud guitars, loud/screaming vocals, and some underwhelming songs. The album started off fairly strong and got weaker. It is better than a 3, but not quite a 4. I will round down.

Not as good as the previous album and not nearly the catastrophe theyd become. A solid piece of ‘70s funk rock and hits just as hard now as it did back then. Enjoyable even if none of the songs stick with you past the runtime.

First, not an Aerosmith fan. Just never was. Much like Def Leopard before with Hysteria. And yet Aerosmith is just part of your upbringing in late 70s to 90s in some places. Back in the Saddle (How was this not used in Young Gun 2 in some way?), Rats in the Cellar, Nobody's Fault are all notable tracks for me. But not nearly as iconic for me as Hysteria was so going for a middle of the road 3 stars on this one.

I nearly gave this a 4. As advertised, it rocks. Has a very modern sound, and immediately recognizable as distinctively Aerosmith. Tyler's vocals are on-point throughout, and they do a great job getting mileage out of their 2-guitar attack without bashing you over the head with it (similar to Mick Taylor-era Stones). Just lacking a little on the songwriting, only a couple are really catchy.

They were just another band out of Boston... Oh wait, that was yesterday. So, I'll split the difference. I like this album and, in particular, I like the songs that lean a little darker and rawer than the singles. "Combination" and "Nobody's Fault" are standouts to me. I've always had a soft spot for the 90s MTV pop rock version of this band and their Alicia Silverstone videos, but when I'm tired at 11pm on a Wednesday I am much more in the mood for the version of Aerosmith that sounds like they haven't sleep in 4 days. They sound like Boston if Boston hadn't showered in a week. The tunes aren't as catchy as they would be later on, but there's some stank on this album that I appreciate.

Im fairly familiar with most albums/song by Aerosmith. But I don't know any of the songs on this album! The album starts rather rocky, with a somewhat omnius intro, the style makes you think this album is gonna be filled with serious song. That is, till the yodeling starts at the end of the first song.. you're reminded immediately that you're listening to Aerosmith lmao. The song Lick And A Promise underlines that thought as well. The next couple of songs vary in style like 'Last Child', which is more like a Lenny Kravitz style funk/rock song. And Rats In The Cellar's style is more like a Blues Brothers style rock song. While Nobody's fault is almost a hard rock, Led Zeppelin kinda song including the heavy riffs.. Overall the album is fairly heavy compared to the previous albums and it's understandable why this album was such a big influence.

Solid music and some great guitar but scream rock isn't my bag so the vocals (while iconic) kept me from giving this a four

I don't super like Aerosmith and this one fell flat for me.

I had forgotten that everybody needs a bit of Aerosmith in their lives. Greg Prato of AllMusic called Rocks "raw and rocking" not sure I can improve on that.

The first three songs not only rock, but draw from different styles. If you were to compare these guys to the mid seventies competition, ACDC, Van Halen, Kiss, Aerosmith is more creative and less commercial. Steven Tyler is annoying but he delivers the goods, especially on a song like Back in the Saddle and Joe Perry is the kind of guitar you want in a band like this. These songs sounded more familiar than I thought they would. Hmmmm.....

Aerosmith is a solid hard/blues rock band. Their music is tight and clear. However the lyrics are really not the best and they don’t really bring anything to the table in terms of innovation. They are just simply ok. They seem perfectly content with cruising in the shadow of better hard rock bands.

At their best when they add a bit of funk, blues and swing to their hard rock template and ‘Rocks’ delivers this in spades with songs like opener ‘Back In The Saddle’, ‘Last Child’ and ‘Get The Lead Out’. There are a couple of missteps though: ‘Nobody’s Fault’ and ‘Combination’ come across as filler, but overall ‘Rocks’ is generally a good time full of cocksure swagger and hard rocking licks.

Wasn't bad as I was expecting. Some songs were even maybe good? The faster-paced songs were pretty good, like Rats in the Cellar. Get the Lead Out was also decent. Lick and a Promise was also decent. Overall, I'd rather be listening to another band like Led Zeppelin though. 3/5

Not the Aerosmith album I would have first thought about, honestly. Doesn't really have any standout singles but it has some good deeper cuts. Rats in the Cellar and Nobody's Fault are standout songs.

After going to Disney, this is a great album to listen to. They have their own rock and roller coaster ride that we did twice and it was great. This album isn't one of my favorites, but has some classics on there like back in the saddle. Forever, Aerosmith will remind me of their guitar hero game.

Not my favorite from Aerosmith, but still a really good album. I enjoy their music in general so this is a good time. A couple recognizable hits and some solid deep cuts. It's got that classic Aerosmith sound, but I preferred Toys in the Attic better. This one ran together a little bit on first listen unfortunately.

I haven't listened to any Aerosmith from this early in their career before, I don't think. Eh, it was ok. I didn't find anything objectionable, but then my attention also seemed to completely slide off it. Took three listens to pick out a fave track, and even then my impressions remain indistinct... Fave track - "Nobody's Fault", I guess...

i suspect, but cannot prove, that the time most people first encounter aerosmith is around 7th or 8th grade. this is kind of perfect, because for the most part their music has about an 8th grade mentality - very fitting. i knew a couple of these tracks because they showed up on their greatest hits - which i discovered in, of course, about 7th grade. i can see why the others weren't included - they're, y'know, fine, they just don't really stand out all that much. overall, i'm just glad this was a quick album

Sounds exactly like I expected an Aerosmith album to sound. Heavy-ish guitars, harmonies, non specific lyrics about girls and life. Neither offensive but interesting to me.

I'm more familiar with 80s/90s Aerosmith, less familiar with this album. It was alright, digging the guitars!

I got a lot of guns and roses and even some nirvana vibes from this album. It’s not the most memorable rock album I’ve ever heard and it has a couple stand out songs. Always hated back in the saddle though. Fav song: sick as a dog

This will be a tough putt, since I absolutely despise Aerosmith's late 80's/early '90's output so much that it compels me to take a pass on their entire catalog. The first 2 songs here are classics, especially Back In The Saddle. That song alone takes this from a 2.5 to a 3. Hey, I like this A LOT more than Bon Jovi!

Too relentlessly "rockin'" for my tastes. I'm not an Aerosmith fan, but I do have respect for their earlier material. But of their early album I think this is my least favorite. 3 🌟

Good to go back and remember when Aerosmith were a proper hard rock band. Having said that I do think this is a bit overrated although I'm sure it would have been great to hear live (if they were sober enough!)

The shadow of "Toys in the Attic" still loomed large, but Aerosmith found a good sound with their blend of blues and honky tonk as instrumentals too over even more of this album.

You can't not like Aerosmith. This is rather good, doesn't sound at all aged. These guys are fun, always, and this album is fun.

Heavier than I was expecting, which is good obviously. It's quite sleazy too, can imagine it playing in an American dive bar. I liked it as a whole album although there weren't really any standout tracks or megahits. Not surprised in the slightest that it influenced Guns n Roses and Motley Crue. 7/10

No me parece el mejor de ellos pero al menos no está lleno de sus canciones más quemadas en los 90 que todas son refritos unas de otras. Buen rock setentero en toda su extensión: guitarras distorsionadas, solos, coros pegajosos, etc. pero hasta ahí.

Never been a huge Aerosmith fan. Some decent tracks, a lot of bluesy stuff, but just not totally up my alley.

I liked the guitars but the songwriting itself was just okay for me.

This is a rock album, and it doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not. I found myself a little annoyed by Tyler's voice, and none of the songs gave me anything to write home about. However, I have a soft spot for this era of music and can understand its appeal. I did appreciate the tasteful use of piano in the closing track. I wish touches like that were more common: They are reminders that there's no need to separate pop appeal from musical attention. Of course, respect for tradition is not an inherent virtue in my account; But Aerosmith is far from avant-garde and I'm rambling now.

Well... it was nice having an album of actual songs today instead of yet another steaming pile of experimental "artsy" vomit. Can't really say this did anything for me, though. Nor do I understand how Robert could possibly think this album is more career-important and must-hear than 'Get a Grip'. Glad we're done with Aerosmith now.

I gave Exile three stars, so this is automatically a one or a two. While this was terrible, it wasn't quite painful, so I'll go with two.

Just… forgettable Too much basic rock just turns into white noise

For a band that I haven't really listened to before, I sure as hell had a lot of preconceived feelings about their music, seeing as I disliked a lot of adjacent bands. And yeah, this album just left a sort of bland taste in my mouth. It's not atrocious, but it throws every unlikable 70s hard-rock cliché at you, especially the vocals; god, I can't stand the vocals here. I know Steven Tyler is labeled as somewhat of a legend in this genre, but he just didn't do much for me at all and is by far and away the worst part about this band. It's like he's purposefully trying to pick the worst possible note to sing every single time, and tries to compensate with his flat and empty high-pitched screeches. 'Home Tonight' might be the exception to this; he actually delivers a pretty heartfelt vocal performance on this one that borders on soulful. The guitar playing, riffs, and song structures, especially when the band is jamming out the outros, like on the ends of 'Rats In The Cellar', 'Combination', or "Nobody's Fault', weren't bad at all; in fact, they were pretty great. But that's all this album had for me in the end, small moments and neat bluesy and hard-rock riffs. Heard that a million times at this point. I don't really see myself revisiting any of the songs here in full.

It was okay. More rock-y than I expected.

Wholly unremarkable - no real stand out tunes or moments. Sounded pretty shonky. Thought it was debut so was surprised this was 5th album and so far from the polished behemoth that's the later day Aerosmith.

This album should be called Sucks. LMAO! Serious review: It's boring. You kind of need to like Aerosmith to enjoy this one, I think. To my ears, it just sounded like one long, smishing smashing NOISE. I'm sick as a dawg after listening to it.

First Listen; 2.5; Proto-butt rock. There's some fun guitar riffs in here, has very okay production and sound, and nothing really off-putting (except the last track). At the same time, it all sounds pretty similar and there's nothing that interesting or ground-breaking, and the production sounds kinda dull. Favorite Track: Nobody's Fault

Aerosmith has some great songs but none of them were on this album. I often see people complaining about over representation of certain bands on this list but this one isn’t mentioned but should be. This is my first Aerosmith album but just the fact that this one is on it has to mean at least Get a Grip and one of the albums with their 70s if not more and that seems like too much Aerosmith representation.

I went through a bit of a Aerosmith singles phase in my musical discovery path and the more I delved in the more I noticed it wasn't my thing. Maybe blues rock isn't my thing. Back in the Saddle is a fun song and that's about it. All the macho bravado that was the main attraction of this style of hard rock is very repetitive to my ear, not much creativity going on throughout the album. It's a solid listen if this is what you are looking for, but maybe I'll find an album more to my likeing later on.

Mad to think this kind of music is 50 years old. The first half was pretty solid. The second half was just dull filler. 2.5 rounded down because Aerosmith are a bit bollocks as a whole and this is their fourth album included here I think.
