Reviews (page 9 of 14)

Oh the weird voices and loud guitar play that mask really well with the vocals is what really does this album for me, it's all so good having such a 70's vibe yet you can tell people definitely were influenced by this album in modern times cause some of the tracks still give a modern feel just by how much influence they've given in this album, really awesome listen throughout.

I like talking heads, and there are a few songs i really love but idk about this album for me, his voice seems to be really irritating me right now. I should give it another go some other time when I’m not sleep deprived and hungry lol

Me gustó, más no se me hizo mágico… tal vez por el mal día.

This album threw me for a loop. It starts off pretty groovy, reminds me of those surrealistic seafood restaurants you’d find during the summer with the fake fish on the wall and a lifesaver with brown walls. very summer like haha! I loved the guitar, vocal delivery was unique, but as it went on that uniqueness became unconventional. there were some parts that were too out there that i couldn’t wrap my head around it. not that it wasn’t necessarily bad but just unconventional. i do have a strong belief it’ll grow on me, but until then i’m 50/50 on this album. loving the topics addressed on the album too though! The production is very very addicting, just needs work on making sure the vocals match that funky groove. Favorite song: No compassion

Generally, this Album isn't such a good, but there are 2 songs i like. It's "Pulled Up' and "Uh-Oh, Loves Come Town".

It came out on my birthday! 16th of september! rocky!!

3,5 great album from Talking Heads. I like it

This was cute. Nothing fantastic but easy enough to listen to

Great funky guitars and weird vocals, but some of the songs were too "quirky" for lack of a better word. Do I really want to listen to a song about the building you live in? Not the Talking Heads at their catchiest, but a few gems on this one Standout Tracks: Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, Psycho Killer.

Uh this was a cool album, i like the way they sing where it feels a bit more speechy than sing songy. Enjoyed it and i do enjoy this genre of music so yay!

Listened to this one for years. Much prefer the more popular live album, speaking in tongues, and remain in light (their best work)

Party in the front, business in the back.

I think the instrumentals are good, I just don't really like David Byrne. In short doses I think he's ok, but there's something really annoying about the way he writes and the way he sings, and it makes me not really want to listen to them. Favorites: New Feeling, No Compassion, Pulled Up

theres talking heads most famous song

Can see where they are going but not there yet

I've become a fan of Talking Heads over the years. With this album, you can see them beginning to blossom. They aren't yet the band that records Remain In Light or the follow-up from that, Speaking In Tongues, but the glimmers of that magic are there.

Pretty good, showed off their drive and intention to make people dance. Definitely hinges on the opener and psycho killer cuz the rest is pretty same-y.

It was okay. Maybe I ruined it by hearing Psycho Killer before a million times but every song on the album sounds super similar. Not very interested in the guitar parts, seems maybe more like a percussion and bass band?

instrumental is nice, loved the guitar. the voice of the singer... not really my cup of tea, it's a style that sounds not always in tune and more spontaneous than clean. Some adlibs-sorta things are annoying to listen to for me. Overall it's an album that creates a nice retro vibe

I think I need to re- listen to this because I couldn’t really concentrate on the album while listening to it, so this rating is not exactly accurate. What I did pay attention to and hear was pretty good

Very fun and 70s garage band vibe, amazing to dance around to

1. Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town - a fun and interesting song 2. New Feeling - eh this one is fine. I liked the one before more. 3. Tentative Decisions - hmm. Idk we’re still wacky and having a good time I guess. 4. Happy Day - ok I think I like this song 5. Who Is It? - ok yeah sure 6. No Compassion - I dont like this one 7. The Book I Read - fine. didnt notice the song change tbh 8. Don’t Worry About the Government - I think I like it 9. First Week/Last Week… Carefree - this one is my fave so far 10. Psycho Killer - best song by far. The rest all sound pretty similar. The musicality of this one is the best too. • 11. Pulled Up - fun and funky

Super cool vibe, but I don’t know if I would gravitate to it.

Znam jedną piosenkę. Album całkiem energiczny, ciekawe brzmienie, czuć 70’s. Wróciłabym do niego

Realizing I am pretty unfamiliar with Talking Heads beyond Psycho Killer...enjoyed listening to this album. Admittedly, it did blend together a bit for me but that may have more been me listening at work first day after 2 week break with a bit of a headcold....eek.....may need to do some additional listens....but overall I liked it, although I don't see myself often putting it on....

i <3 an unexpected steel drum (uh-oh, love comes to town), i like the beats for most talking heads songs, they just make you want to move and dance what caught my ear most: the book i read pulled up don’t you worry about the government no compassion psycho killer - think this was the only song i knew from this album before this listen last week is going to b an earworm for me i just know it overall liked this, saved/added a few songs to playlists, think the second half was more my speed

I liked it and I get the appeal of the band but it just didn't quite click for me. I see the potential, maybe one of their later albums will be a little more appealing.

my dark secret is I don't have strong feelings about Talking Heads one way or the other despite being a band weird and influential enough that they should provoke some sort of strong feelings. I don't even have terribly strong feelings about how Byrne can't sing. A grating voice is not necessarily a deterrent to me enjoying a band; sometimes it's even a selling point. at any rate this isn't quite weird enough and it's just kind of good and I don't understand why they didn't either restrict the list to just Remain in Light (which would have been a fine decision) or used what I'm calling the Cheap Trick Cheap Trick and put Stop Making Sense on here the way it's apparently ok to include At Budokan. (Which is the correct choice! it's fine!) Three for music, doesn't really need to be on the list for either the purpose of getting to know the band or knowing the music scene. Actually liked this a lot more than I expected. he really loves those ayayayayas huh

I like “uh-oh, love comes to town” it has cute phrases and I appreciate the positive attitude.

Interesting, seems intellectual, maybe too much so for me. I think I hear some punk influence which I like. Singers voice is an acquired taste, I guess.

very 70s, i like most of the songs

It was alright, nothing that grabbed me on first listen

A few amazing songs and the rest has Byrne sounding identical to the next. It’s all his vibe just waiting to see what hooks. But when it does, they’re immediately classic.

I wish i listened more intently, but oh well. Had higher hopes for this, but it felt longer than necessary. Would probably give it a 3.5 if we could do half ratings, but we can’t and 4 seems too high.

still not really getting the whole appeal here :/

3 stars only because of psycho killer

The last of the slightly-too-many Talking Heads albums in this collection. It's nice to get their debut album last, mainly to hear how much they stuck to their roots in later albums (although the collection unfortunately stuck with only early albums). I was surprised how...mellow...so many of the tracks were on this album, especially given how renowned they apparently were for their live CGBG performances, but the songs are still very identifiable as the product of the Talking Heads, and of course their long-time classic "Psycho Killer" definitely steals the show. (I can't really imagine what that song would have sounded like if the producer (Jon Bon Jovi's cousin) had successfully inserted "psychedelic strings" into the mix.) I also enjoyed "Who is it?" and "The book I read", although overall this is not their strongest album.

I feel it in my heart

Psycho Killer still my favourite, though it's not my favourite album.

Not my favourite Talking Heads album, but as their debut album, you can see the pieces start to line up. Fave track: Psycho Killer (a given)

3 Stars. Favorite tracks: The Book I Read, Don’t Worry About the Government, Psycho Killer. Very 70s. Definitely a very strong end of album but found the beginning repetitive.

not my favourite talking heads album, belt a bit too long but did have some good tracks i hadn’t heard before

Better than Coldplay

Psycho Killer is the top song here, and it’s great, but the rest seemed fairly average upon my listen

I liked this album. Really good background album. Psycho Killer is an excellent song lots of fun. This is not the Talking Heads album I expected on this list, but I enjoyed it. 1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again front to back on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl

No su mejor. Psycho killer es un banger. Me encanta la raresa y lo fresco que suena para su epoca

A sharp and confident debut with a cool, minimalist approach. The album is tight and angular, firmly rooted in the early new wave/punk scene, with David Byrne’s nervous and detached vocals at the center. Psycho Killer stands out as the clear highlight, while the rest can feel somewhat repetitive. An important first step. 3/5

A fine album from a band that becomes so so so so much more than fine.

this album was alright - probably wouldn't listen to again, but not bad. psycho killer is definitely popular for a reason - it's the best song on the album.

Creativity abounds and some tracks are super but as an album not so much

A solid foundation with some obvious highs. Perhaps the most influential TH album. The sound of this album still resonates.

Some of my favorite Talking Heads songs are off 77 but overall, I think it's a pretty uneven album; par for the course from a good debut. Uh-Oh feels like the perfect song to officially kick off the Talking Heads' discography. The energy is palpable on certain songs but other ones feel like they were phoned in a little. A worthwhile listen regardless. Favorite Tracks: Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up

Early Talking Heads has some heaters on it but is still very much a debut album where Byrne & company are testing out their sound and seeing what parts of the scene they feel more comfortable in. Their sound comes out a lot more fully baked than your average band but the best songs on here are the ones where Byrne is yelping and talksinging about something he has puppylike admiration for (girlfriends, modern living, books.) He does this really great ironic celebration thing that he totally sells because he sounds so earnest. He's a bit too art school cool to be sincere about it, right, so you know he's on your side but for a moment, you just about believe that some civil servants are just like your loved one. And hell, for as overplayed as it is, Psycho Killer still brings down the house. The thing about your dad's band doing it is that the don't get the bassline just right. Favorite Tracks: Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town, The Book I Read, Don't Worry About the Government, Psycho Killer

Not my favorite Talking Heads album. Many of the songs on the first half of the album sound pretty much the same but that changes on the second half. The incessant AYAYAYA gets old fast. Definitely cutting edge in many ways. Some great tracks - Pulled Up and Psycho Killer chief among them.

Decent effort

Didn't expect the steel drums. Good start, good end, won't revisit the middle. Hated Happy Day.

Like the overall vibe. Had a few songs I’ll add to the rotation but overall didn’t love

i wanted to like it more than i did. nice hippie vibe for getting ready in the morning but i don’t think there are any songs i would put on my regular rotation.

Psycho killer - great song. The rest of album - so so

I didn't hate it

Mood/Vibe: Alternative rock/punk/funk Standout Tracks:  - Psycho Killer Replay?  Yes, but mostly to get it all sink in, not because I loved it Notes:  This was a funky, experimental, artsy album. Love the moments of the 70s funky beats mixed together with the more experimental beats and sounds. Stand out on this album is the penultimate Psycho Killer, the only one on the album I’m familiar with. While I liked this album, I don’t think overall, it will get many more listens from me. That being said, I enjoyed the journey and the dive into a band I know shaped many artists and musicians. This was their first studio album so not only am I glad I got this one first, I’m interested to hear how their sound evolves with another three albums on this list.

Not for me, always enjoy psycho killer though

I knew Psycho Killer from the album, which is an immensely well done track. I’m not a huge fan of the ’80s sound, but that song works for me. I enjoy their use of instrumentation, especially their funky bass grooves that fit so well within that 80’s style. The fact that this was actually released in the 70s makes it much more influential and impactful in my opinion. It basically defines the start and foundation of the 80’s new wave and post-punk sound, and they went on to create some of the most iconic music of that decade. At that point in time, what would Talking Heads even be categorised as, new wave funk? Avant-pop? Overall, I find the album cover quite interesting. Very plain just a red background with italicised, capitalised text in green. A very odd choice of colours and contrast but I get the vibe. I was expecting to love this album more. I felt like a lot of the songs sounded the same. Not a bad album, but not my favourite. I do enjoy the standout Psycho Killer though. My favourite tracks would be Uh-Oh Love Comes to Town, New Feeling, The Book I Read, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up.

I wish the talking heads could just have some consistency. Still an enjoyable listen.

Good start for this band. Definitely indicative of things to come, but with a more rock feel than later albums.

Very strange, not my favorite from them. It makes sense that this is their first album, like they were still trying to find their feet a bit. "Psycho Killer" rocks though, I would be ok with just listening to that.

Didn't like this one as much as the previous one I heard on this list but it was decent I guess

It's impossible not to listen to this in the context of the Talking Heads, rather than the 1001 albums project. So rather than hearing all the good moments, it's the uncharacteristic bad bits which jump out. And 'uncharacteristic' is exactly the problem. The first track simply doesn't belong on a Talking Heads record. No groove, no edge, just very plain. The pre-Eno production is so jingly jangly. Makes them sound like a high school indie band. And 'Psycho Killer'. Clearly a classic, but starkly atypical in their discography. A lone anthem amongst a careers worth of bangers. All in all, it jars frankly. There's more than glimpses of their quality. But it just doesn't sit right.

Psycho Killer saved a 2

bangers all around. nothing really to complain about here. this one was a good time, but it's not going to make any changes to the rotation probably.

The Talking Heads have never clicked for me, but I’ve also never spent much time listening to their albums as a whole. I enjoyed this listen more for some reason. Byrne still chafes me a bit, though. His voice and his shtick can be a lot.

Good funky album. Difficult to fault any element of the performance or songwriting.

I've never liked Talking Heads. Not that I've ever given them a chance. But the videos of those stupid suits and swinging arms and dances - absolutely not. The few songs I've heard - nope. But let's give them a proper go. First song is decent, but then all the vocal nonsense, tics, and jangling guitars start which takes the gloss off everything it touches. Partially a shame because there are good moments here. I say moments because good songs are few and far between. The shite overshadowed those good moments. The best songs are just about better than average, brought back down by the ridiculous vocals. No Compassion might be a great song without the jangle and crap singing. Plus marks for the lyrics, I quite enjoyed the drums...plus marks for being different in principle. I get why people are obsessed with the band, but for now, still not for me.

A good album ... and "Psycho Killer" is still awesome after all these years.

Couldnt get into the jibberish

Fun group. Not best album end to end but enjoyed it

I really like the bass lines. Vocals, not so much. I feel like you could identify the art school pretentiousness, even if you knew nothing about Talking Heads.

This is a solid Talking Heads (punk pop?) album, made famous by the hit "Pyscho Killer". While that song is by far the best track on the record, the rest of the album is itself far from subpar. The music and arrangements are generally clean and fun, and the 38 minute run time did not feel like a complete slog to get through. This is not quite my cup of tea; I've never liked David Byrne's vocals, and some of the lyrical choices are strange, but as their debut album goes it is fairly good. Key Songs: "Psycho Killer", "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town"

Nüt krass, nüt scheisse

I like the more beat-oriented, later versions of Talking Heads. This seems much closer to Television, which makes sense, but Television did this better.

Loved the iconic psycho killer but the rest of the album left more to be desired.

This stuff is just so okay. It's one of those albums that is both parts forgettable and unforgettable. I always remember their general sound but outside of some highlights and "Psycho Killer" I can't remember anything specific about what I just heard a short moment ago. I think you can just listen to "Psycho Killer" and get the gist of Talking Heads 77

Its fine

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Psycho Killer, Don't Worry About The Government Psycho Killer aside, I hadn't heard any of the other songs on this album. I think It's a fine album, but its just kind of weird. I don't know what to really think about it. I don't understand what any of the songs are conveying. Is the album political? About love? Are the lyrics laced with heavy symbolism or metaphor or are they literal? Don't Worry About The Government, for example. What is David Byrne trying to say? Is this song about communism? Capitalism? Low-income housing? Being stupid rich and having your pick of convenient building with all of the best amenities? Why shouldn't I need to worry about [him]? Because his housing is taken care of? Okay...

A lot of the songs were pretty much the same. Definitely a few fantastic songs though

Feels like the 70s. Definitely a consistent sound, I feel like I'm at an arcade the whole time. I actually liked the acoustic version of Psycho Killer best, which sort of told me I just didn't enjoyed their sound that much. Definitely good, if not my thing.

Some bangers here but overall decent

Hmm..I'm not quite sure I understand it. I like the instrumentals but not really a fan of David Byrne's voice.

Very similar to the other two Talking Heads albums we have done, but perhaps without quite the level of wow factor.

3.5 stars

I wanted to like this more but it didn’t do much for me. Instrumentals were fun at points and vocals were here and there. Happy Day was really annoying and Psycho Killer is a classic for a reason.

Some good, groovy listening. Loved how clean the guitars sounded. Would prefer a different vocalist to accompany it but it’s tolerable….is what I would have said if I just heard the first couple songs but I found him to be more and more annoying unfortunately. His shouts are giving me flashbacks to Suicide. But enough complaining. Very bright and happy music that I enjoyed overall!

If you ain’t talking head, I don’t wanna talk. Listening to this on the Eve of no Nut November was a godsend. If I listened to this album even one day later I wouldn’t be able to contain myself. I enjoyed it but nothing revolutionary for me. Got a little bored midway through then picked back up at the end. Was planning to write a super long review over the weekend but felt uninspired after listening. Good not great… but can see why people love these guys. Would probably spin this again to give it a better chance. 3.4/5

A fine album. Some bops, some bores.

Psycho Killer is a classic. I like the album as a whole.

love how unpolished they sound on this

A uniquely distinct band that I only know from the 80s and am unfamiliar with the earlier stuff from the 70s. Nice to hear the beginning of where they evolved their sound from. This album is well recorded and lays out all the quirky songs nicely in the mix. Maybe sounds a bit dry but it sure helps to highlight the great bass lines by Tina Weymouth! I’m enjoying my first spin through this but feels like it will take a few listens to really understand these interesting and creative songs. Makes me wish I was in my early 20s in 1977 and hearing this on college radio and in the nightclubs at the time!

Not a fan of talking heads fan

I guess its 50 years too late to find a new lead singer. I really like the band, but the lead singer just does not vibe with me. Could be 4 stars with different vocals. Favorite track is no compassion.

Decent, less batshit than I expected. Psycho Killer easily the standout

Good funkynees Some unusual instruments too

I've never known how to feel about this band. I don't LIKE Psycho Killer, I only like that it exists. sometimes they feel like weird for weird sake, and most of their hits i find meh. in a world where its '77 in New York and music is changing very rapidly, this speaks to that movement. would i turn this on by myself, no. but they have a following that i can't understand. as a punk kid, that must be it; that its art and it can't always conform to your sensibilities. maybe that's what i really like about it more than the record itself. its consistent, but in a way that kinda runs together. its ridiculous in moments, which takes me out of it. 3/5 and i tried to put it higher for their first album.

Side 2 is a classic. Side 1 kind of grates on me and always has for some reason. Kind of a bouncy, pedantic offering, but it's a debut, and they clearly formed a sound and style shortly after this.

1 - Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town. Textbook Bryne vocals, steeldrum, funky but could use more energy for an opening track. 2 - New Feeling. Electric guitar, head bobbing. Sounds like that Eminem parody on YouTube. 3 - Tentative Decisions. Military snare, piano, marching vibes. Fun. 4 - Happy Day. A little more disjointed, but it works. 5 - Who Is It? Knock Knock. Who's there. This short, odd song. 6 - No Compassion. Creative structure and message. 7 - The Book I Read. Why am I doing a song by song review again? 8 - Don’t Worry About the Government. 80s Capitalism, in song form. 9 - First Week/Last Week… Carefree. 10 - Psycho Killer. On the map for good reason. 11 - Pulled U. Bookender, I like the loose guitar riffs. Bryne is really feeling it here, you can tell.

Fat guy reviews: 25. Two can play at this game, Mr. Kearns. Me need money now, me sick. Is his name Burns or Byrne? Listen, this thing is off the rails anyway. All I know is that he looks like Dana Carvey in an oversized suit that would make the 2003 NBA draft blush AND I liked the last Talking Heads album. A lot. Psycho Killer tends to make the rounds near Halloween, so maybe we’re getting some early hallow’s eve prep. I don’t care. Spin up the evil corporation’s music service. The spookiest thing of all is that society rewards sociopathy and therefore the worst people in the world rise to the top and shape our very way of living! Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town - uh oh. It’s that song “Brandy” with more steel drums. That uhh ain’t good. Step it up, lads. New Feeling - Alright! Here we god this is the quirked up, heavy shit I was hoping for. There is a rage with this that I just love. The energy is almost punk. Fantastic. Tentative Decisions - From punk to funk. This is another frantic, weird “banger.” As the kids, and now cringeworthy millennials say. The circle of life. Happy Day - Kind of listless. I still enjoy the tortured vocals. He’s just so expressive. Who Is It? - Oh hi, I didn’t see you there. I was just enjoying reviewing albums poorly at work and I thought, why am I not behind the wheel of a 2007 Kia Rio right now. It’s clear that I have made horrible decisions. Don’t be like me. Consult your nearest scrapyard today. No Compassion - Some? I like this song a lot. The Book I Read - Red you, wrote you. I got nothing else. Don’t Worry About the Government - They’re in good hands! Billionaires! People who certainly have our best interests at heart. This song is insane. I love it. Or do I hate it. It’s certainly impactful. First Week / Last Week… Carefree - Too many song titles. Just name a different song one of these names. Come on, fellas. Psycho Killer - I mean this song is ubiquitous with Halloween and movies and and and. It’s everywhere. It still rules. One of the more insane songs to reach the heights it has. Pulled Up - This is the unreleased gangsta rap track detailing a deal gone wrong, in which Mr. Byrne’s “opps” “pull up.” I ran out of gangsta terms. A bunch of Westside Gunn listening doesn’t make up for a life forged in the Canadian suburbs. Yeah these guys are great. I didn’t like this as much as “Remain in Light,” but it remains a fascinating listen nonetheless. Unhinged vocals, sharp rhythms, and an overall bizarre atmosphere kept me engaged, although I would’ve loved a bit more darkness. This one felt manic, but I was missing some of the depression. Ah well. I’ll have to somehow fill that void with uhh Bethlehem or something. Das ist gud. Or so they say. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: New Feeling, No Compassion, Psycho Killer

First time hearing this band. Some fun stand out tracks like tentative decisions and don’t worry about the government.

Pleasant surprise for me; I thought it would be a 1 star for sure. Psycho Killer gets a star by itself. Influence 3. Hits 3. Quality 2. I love Psycho Killer and didn't hate the rest 3.

- cooli kläng - vibe isch immer passend

They started the new wave rock movement. I'm always on the fence about it and have to be in the right mood. No Compassion is a great song, loved the lyrics, it's brutally honest and funny. The lyrics in general are entertaining.

Chill rock, like kor tebakelent de e i måten de spille. Beste sang: Psycho Killer

Always a good listen, Talking Heads, this is no exception. 3.5 stars

I’d long been aware of the band’s distinctive name, but I had never actually listened to their music — not even the famous Psycho Killer. After listening this album for the first time, I can see why it’s considered influential — they were already looking beyond punk when punk itself was still exploding. Still, I’ve always been more drawn to the raw, straightforward kind of rock, so this didn’t resonate with me much. Maybe it’s that eternal contrast between raw emotion and intellectual distance — and I’ve always leaned toward the former.

Felt like it was equally fun and annoying. Not bad at all, just not totally my style

I expected more, to be honest

Definitely not a bad album, with some groovy tunes and 80s sparkle, but this sits firmly in the shadow of Remain In Light, for me!

Didn’t love this, nowhere near as good as Remain In Light. Lyrics and singing weren’t great - not very serious, but not in a good way. However, I LOVED the last track - it was brilliant! The whole album sounds more 80s than 70s too, so I guess it’s pretty ahead of its time.

good stuff!

*Fun rock music *Liked the songs with saxophone *Vocals are a little strange sounding

A band I understand why people enjoy but not one for me 3*

It was good

Not my favorite Heads.

Psychokiller is a classic, but it's definitely still pretty weird. Everything else is easy listening though. Overall not bad.

It's certainly fun.

Not my fav talking heads, some parts felt a bit repetitive

Odd to listen to knowing where the band goes to. Mix of kind of standard nu-wave like early tracks, some mediocre like the book I read and what sound alike talking heads were becoming like no compassion, don't worry about the government and ofc psychokiller.

Was about to say this is classic 80's music, but clearly it came out in '77 so I'd be wrong there. Perhaps they were ahead of their time? Pioneers to what the 80's would become? IDK. And I don't really care to dig into it. The album is pretty good. I didn't find an objectionable song. Psycho Killer is probably the winner here.

Still not a big Talking Heads guy. Psycho Killer is definitely my favorite song of theirs though. Uh Oh, Love Comes to Town and Pulled Up are also alright. The rest kinda give me a headache.

Excellent!

This whole album kind of feels like Psycho Killer, just in different fonts. Really not that exciting. Favorite Song: Psycho Killer

Not sure I get the Talking Heads - liked it enough though

“Psycho Killer” is a timeless banger, but the rest of the album kind of falls flat for me. The band sounds fantastic, but a lot of the lyrics feel kind of lazy. David Byrne’s vocal style has always been hit or miss to me, and it’s a miss on this particular listen. I want to be one of the cool kids who adores this band, but alas. 3.5

Not too bad.

Everything here feels intentional and layered. Production sounds pretty great. Funky songs were really great. So why am I so lukewarm about it? Maybe not melodic enough for me?

That's where that song is from!

My name is Abagail and I'm one-hundred eight years young. I live in Nebraska and as a black woman, that's not easy. I'm a strong Christian woman that loathed Satan and I won't back down from him. Back in nineteen-seventy nine, I visited Boulder, Colorado and I was stunned at its beauty and to this day, the main campus of University Of Colorado is still the most gorgeous campus that I have ever seen. Anyway, I am...

Psycho Killer justifies this album's existence, and it's impressive how fully formed TH's sound is from the word go, but I also don't like Talking Heads that much. 3*

***A good album, great instrumentals and vocals. Too many tracks.

I liked this album, I had only heard Psycho Killer before, but I enjoyed Don’t Worry about the Government and first week/ last week… carefree. It was upbeat and danceable.

Solid album. 80s are not my favorite, but this is very tolerable

I don’t know much of their history or this type of music. I enjoyed it enough, but didn’t personally love the sound. It seems like it might be a really cool/important album for music history and maybe I just didn’t get it

The interesting sounds you expect out of talking heads in a more traditional pop flow. The whole album goes by quite fast.

Yet another band that I have wanted to hear an album by but not got round to it. Now, I didn't expect every track to be a classic like Psycho Killer. But I did expect more than the first half of the album gave. It did start to pull it back part way through, or perhaps the start just lowered my expectations. Anyway on the whole it's wasnt bad, just not as good as I expected still feel I have to give it a 3 though

Very enjoyable. Great story telling in that quirky arty unique way. I had to wait for the standout tracks, both appearing at the end of the album… the classic ‘Psycho Killer’ and the uplifting ‘Pulled up’

I didn't give this one the focus it deserved and only listened in the shower. Definitely heard some early rock influences. Overall didn't grab me though.

Psycho Killer is a classic. „Uh-Oh, Love comes to Town“ is my favorite i guess.

This is my third attempt connect to the music of the Talking Heads, and this time I've somehow managed to do so. It's still pretty cheesy, and I still don't particularly like it, but I can now appreciate their innovative potential and influence on subsequent artists.

Was alright, but it didn't really grip me. Pulled Up was probably my favourite (though it went on a bit long for me), followed by No Compassion and Psycho Killer. Not really likely to chose to play the whole album again unless it's reflecting on this 1001 albums generator list. I kept hearing a lyric that would pull me in but then I'd feel slightly underwhelmed by where it went, particularly in the na-na-nas of The Book I Read. Overall, feel somewhat neither here nor there about the album. But I am intrigued about the Talking Heads and will likely give some of their other music a listen as I do want to try and work out what it is I'm missing about them.

alright

not the best that the talking heads have to offer, but what we have here is still pretty good, and psycho killer is nothing short of a stone-cold classic. (fear of music and remain in light, the latter of which i own on vinyl, are their best - a popular opinion but for good reason.)

Pretty cool album. Captures their quirky style and musicianship in about as raw a way as you'll find. Not really a surprise that they continued on with their long list of hits after Psycho Killer, which if nothing else puts this one into the "must hear" category.

The other 3 I listened to were better.

Talking Heads are one of the most creative rock bands of all time, but this is only their debut and it feels like their potential isn't fully realized yet. It has their fun and over-the-top

Overall good music, I really liked the vibe

Rocking

David Byrne is hard to mistake for someone else, as a songwriter but especially as a vocalist. This is VERY Byrne-y. I've never really liked the Talking Heads, but they have a style all their own, and they do it well. I respect it, and it's not annoying, so I guess that means...

It was alright, best song was psycho killer obviously

Pycho killer

Decent album. "Psycho Killer" is a great song. Beyond that, I might go back to listen to a couple of new discoveries I liked. Clearly setting the stage for a lot of 80s music. B-/C+.

his voice is so silly

Love the Talking Heads! Not my favorite album by them, but the beats are always fun to dance to and David Byrne is always a thoughtful lyricist

i liked this a lot better. but i mean, in terms of talking heads, are there not better albums? who decides on these?

I liked it but not that much. It sounds like it would be fun to be in the band. Psycho Killer and First Week/Last Week are great but I wasn't really into most of the rest. I like that Tina Weymouth learned bass specifically to join this band and immediately performed one of the iconic bass intros (ever?) on Psycho Killer.

I seem to be on a roll of records I would really appreciate if you replaced the lead singer. Musically: loved it. Vocally: Talking Heads: yeah, not for me. David Byrne sounds like they employed someone to intermittently, and completely randomly, stab him with a needle during the recording process. I think I said this on the previous Talking Heads album the generator gave me, but I do understand that Talking Heads without those vocals wouldn't be Talking Heads. But it doesn't mean I have to enjoy it. Instrumentation = 4/5 Vocals = 1.5/5 I'm going to plump for a generous 3/5 because of Psycho Killer.

A one-hit wonder album, nothing stood out past Psycho Killer to me. It was fine, but not something that would have made me have a full buy-in on the band when it released.

Ao mesmo tempo que não contem nada que desagrade, também não tem nada realmente marcante ou espetacular (exceto pelo hit "Psycho Killer"). Um disco satisfatório, com melodias agradáveis, mas sem empolgar.

Guys voice is interesting. Its like he's trying to sing bad. Album is fun and also has a melancholic side to it, like its trying its best to escape from the stress in its life by trying to be indifferent. Chill and new for me tho not really my type

Estuvo bien. No me volvió loco tampoco, me gustó más que rust never sleeps, eso sí. Siento que tengo que ser un viejo sureño americano para amar esta música, no siento las putas vibras, pero me gustó más el sonido.

Solid album, they have better ones though

This album was better than the last talking heads album, a few bangers in this. Each song does sound alot like the last

Pretty good, not a huge talking heads fan. But this one’s not too bad

Love psycho killer, the rest is okay, but didn’t blow me away.

Sorry but other than Psycho Killer which is a great song, it was all very much the same

2 talking heads albums in 3 days, and they are decent but honestly not the band for me

I guess I expected more

Enjoyed it more than I expected, I'm not a big TH fan, but I'd listen to this one again.

There's a few good tracks, including Psycho Killer, but so much of this album is just really bland and meh. "Bleh". 2.5 rounded up.

Love the Talking Heads, but this album not so much.

Textbook three stars. Fine, but as someone not super familiar with the Talking Heads, not as compelling as I was expecting.

This is much more disco inspired than some previous albums, and I think it suffers for it. Still have some of the Talking Heads signature sounds but I am not as gripped by the songs. The guitars create a nice contrasting yet complementary base for the songs. The bass is sometimes lost, but when distinct enough it is a nice pillar. With the benefit of historical hindsight, this is a debut album with the bones of future greatness. But they clearly expanded and improved on their sound in future releases.

Solid, probably wouldn't listen again

Favorites: Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, The Book I Read, Psycho Killer Not my favorite Talking Heads, this record (despite being released in their prime) is still pretty primitive compared to what they would achieve on Fear Of Music or Remain In Light. That being said, this is still absolutely a worthwhile listen as a landmark in what new wave would become in the 80s.

13/1001 Talking Heads - Talking Heads '77 Heard Before? ✅ Revisit? ❎ There should be a lot that clicks with Talking Heads for me, however, whenever I try and album of theirs it always leaves me a bit nonplussed. It's perfectly fine but yeah, I wouldn'trush back to this again... Psycho Killer is a banger though

Not their best album

Not really my type of music

I love a lot of talking heads, but none of my favorite songs are on this album.

First half flop second half bop

There was a time when I would've said the Talking Heads were my favorite band, undisputed. I still love them. 77 is not my favorite album by them. The songs are great, but I'm not a fan of the production. From what I recall, they had issues with the producer during recording. The guitar are flat and kind of shrill, the energy is off and restrained. Compare to the energy of their CBGB live shows of the time. The songs are arguably better than their follow-up More Songs About Buildings And Food, but the difference is Brian Eno. Talking Heads became full force under his production and the focus shifting to rhythm. 77 is driven by guitars and Byrne's singing, which is tight and idiosyncratic, but not to the level of peak Talking Heads. 77 hovers somewhere around a 3 or 4, depending on whether you listen to it remastered or not. For some, this will be their favorite Talking Heads album, but for me I connect more with Fear of Music and Remain In Light. While listening to 77 I'm constantly thinking how it can be improved with more eclectic rhythm additions or Adrian Belew guitar effects. It just doesn't feel fully fleshed out to me, but I still like it.

Didn’t grab my attention, but I need to give it more time.

Look, I really like Talking Heads. This album just doesn't land for me the way others do. No question they're brilliant, and no question that David Byrne is one of the best "true artists." In fact, on paper, I should adore this. I just... don't. "Pulled Up" slaps. The rest is... good? Some of this will find its way on mix tapes. The rest will likely never be revisited.

Solid album with little to none tracks that I dont like. Fascinating that this new wave sound not from the 80s. However, i am missing more tracks that stand out like psycho killer.

Psycho Killer is great, but he rest of this album is good, but not great for Talking Heads.

Composition: 10/10 Vocals: 4/10 Instrumentals: 8/10 Overall: will listen again

3.4 Honestly just never got it, this early era of theirs is just not high up for theirs faves: psycho killer, uh-oh, no compassion

Talking Heads debut feels like a debut. Not their best work, but an important album. "Psycho Killer" is the big hit and is probably the most interesting song on the album. Overall, not the best, but certainly not the worst.

I think I just don't get it

Whilst being fairly iconic it’s nowhere near the standard of the next 4 albums. Again how this is on here over speaking in tongues is confusing.

Love a bit of talking heads and psycho killer is a banger but a lot of this merged into one big ol mediocre song

Talking Heads had a very interesting evolution during their existence, but I am glad to say they were still fully-formed and confident and exciting on their debut here. While I do believe that the next several Talking Heads albums are generally more interesting than the material here, these are still great songs, and also impressively, all of the weird little nooks and crannies in what would become Talking Heads' sound are pretty much all here, just a little bit more subdued. We see Talking Heads here exploring the elements of funk, angular post punk, and futuristic textures here, but just to a lesser extent, and often in a different way than they would appear later. An interesting consequence of this is that pretty much every other Talking Heads album sounds more like each other than this, so it kind of feels like a unique treat in their discography. Some of the little experiments here are totally unlike anything that would appear later, like the steel drums on Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town. Also, I must mention, that David Byrne is as fascinating and idiosyncratic as he ever would be here. His voice is not exactly deadpan, but it is more spoken than sung most of the time, and he is kind of riding a line between nervous and manic in a way that captures the really interesting energy that he is known for. The lyrics also have all the Byrne-isms that we know and love, if you don't know what I'm talking about, just read some, it'll explain better than I can. A lot of the themes here are about anxiety and alienation and neuroticism, but the images are obsessed with objects and buildings and business-men, and the rules of English grammar are largely adhered to. Anyways, there is a fair share of highlights here. The jerky, click-y Who Is It? is a sign of things to come. Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town is groovy in a way the band would never really be again. The Book I Read and Don't Worry About The Government are both great Talking Heads deep cuts with some of the best lyrics on here. And lastly, Psycho Killer wasn't a hit at the time, but any song this good is bound to find its audience. Ultimately, even though Talking Heads would grow substantially after Talking Heads 77, this is still pretty great at a lot of its moments. There are some tracks that I don't click with, but I am very pleased with this as a whole.

Ironically, I had this lp on vinyl. Re-listening now Tentative Decisions stands out to me. I'm not a David Byrne fan but I imagine this made quite a splash in 1977. I like Tina Weymouth's bass a lot.

Pretty good

I enjoy talking heads but I feel this album is a little middle of the road other than Psycho Killer which is clearly amazing. Personally prefer the album talking in tongues.

Pretty cool, but considering it's David Byrne (I love some of his solo stuff), I was perhaps expecting more? But this is undoubtably cool quirky stuff. Maybe I was in the wrong mood, but nothing really stood out. Psycho Killer is ace though.

A horrible album cover (unless this came out on Christmas Day), but a fine album. It sounds happy, which I like. According to Wiki, the producer (Jon Bon Jovi's cousin) was a real method-acting weirdo. It must be said: these guys really are into buildings. Highlights: 'Tentative Decisions', 'No Compassion' (very relatable! also, are there still analysts even?), 'Don't Worry About the Government' (also very relatable! would make a good Severance fanvid)

Love Talking Heads but this album is so repetitive!!

funny album! a little loud

Good debut album, but still far from maturity.

Non male, ha un buon ritmo. Magari lo si prende se ci si capita addosso.

Had no idea psycho killer was from the 70s. The rest is ok, but doesn't go as hard. 3* Highlights: psycho killer, pulled up

Not bad

Once more the music is fine but christ why get a monkey to be the frontman

Leuke muziek. Lekker voor op de achtergrond.

Oh, so annoying and sometimes freaky. I love Psycho Killer, though…

Generally enjoyable, but I think I like the adaptations they make to their later music better

Фоном звучит нормально, не раздражает. Большего, увы, сказать не могу. 6 из 10.

Pretty decent stuff. Not a huge Heads fan, but this is a solid album

A good listen enjoyed a lot of these tunes I generally skip over.

Very repetitive but it wasn’t bad. I liked most of it, was a decent punk vibe. Interesting singing voice/tone, both liked and disliked it.

I feel like I would like it more if the singer didn’t sound like he was busting a nut every two seconds. It’s just all really weird and bizarre sounding. The iconic psycho killer is good though but I feel like it lacks depth to be something I would want to listen to more. It’s just catchy.

Solid debut album, not much else to say honestly. Though psycho killer makes me wanna watch American psycho and snort cocaine

another rock album where the main song I heard about was in the rock band library. Idk nothing jumped out at me as amazing. Kinda your typical 70s rock. Put it on a couple times but found myself walking out of the room where the music was without pausing. Not the best not the worst. Bog standard as it was.

3.5, not my fav talking heads album

Tentative Decisions is pretty good, the first couple of tracks were super corny. Happy Day was ok and I did like No Compassion. Don't worry the government I've heard before and enjoyed, along with Love Building on Fire. First Week and Pulled Up are kind of catchy. I do like the groove of Sugar On My Tongue. This is kind of hot and cold, jumping between corny and pretty good so far for me. I do love Psycho Killer track and know that one really well. I think I'm between a 2 and 3 on this album.

You talkin' to me? Många Talking Heads plattor blir det.

What an unexpected album. I don't think I'll return to it often but it was a pleasant listen. The lyrics are so mundane in the best way. It does get a bit repetitive towards the end.

Some bands come out swinging with an amazing debut album and spend the rest of their careers trying to recreate it. Not so with Talking Heads. Apart from Psycho Killer, this album is just ok. The pieces that would go on to define the band are all there: the quirky lyrics, the funky instrumentation, David Byrne's staccato vocals etc. It just lacks the confidence of the later albums and feels a bit limp as a result. 3.5/5

Who knew half of 'Psycho Killer' was in French. Bouncy, light, silly but ultimately a pretty forgettable record.

I like Psycho Killer, the rest of the album was ok, David Byrne warbling over ‘70/80s punk pop tunes.

Pretty decent. It’s kind of a solid 3 stars. I wouldn’t mind listening to it again but I probably wouldn’t seek it out.

MUCH better than the Feat of Music album I listened to previously.

It’s talking heads. They’re cool but this album isn’t revolutionary.

I didn’t know what to expect but I enjoyed this.

point4.

The Talking Heads record that I've listened to the most, as it's the only one I ever bothered to buy. Although I know the others pretty well, I think this is a much easier record to put on, as it is much less dense - the sound of the band itself, rather than the band and Eno. Probably not the best Talking Heads album, but the only Talking Heads album. Considered that way, it is obviously riddled with contradictions: Jerry Harrison was a smart addition to complete the four-piece, but all the keyboard parts he adds sound dreadful. It's the interplay of their guitars that works best for me, even though the production and mixing is pretty rough and does them no favours. I like the clean guitar sound. Tina Weymouth was only playing bass for five months or so when they recorded the album and it is her most rudimentary part - the verse of Psycho Killer - that is most lauded and imitated. However, the best bass playing is everywhere else - the bridge of that song for example. Yet, while the guitar interplay and bass are the best parts of the record, Psycho Killer, with the least of the guitar and the simplest bass, is the standout song. Who Is It? isn't much of anything, but it shows all the modes of the band as they expand and contract through the different sections. There is absolutely nothing there in the song, but they arrange the nothing pretty well. Once they start working with Eno in the studio, they hardly arrange at all, working songs out of grooves, rather than shaping songs into records. I can't decide how I feel about Byrne's lyrical approach. He tells rather than shows, which is usually bad form, such as when he tells us that the world has problems and that he is indecisive, rather than dramatizing this or giving us illustrations. Is this universalising? I like that he sings about friendship on two songs, an underexplored topic. While Byrne is often thought of as an observer rather than an emoter, the ooohs and woahs are pretty intense, like at the end of The Book I Read. They're pitchy and I don't know what they mean, but I find them more decisive than the lyrics. The 'Here we go again' at the end of No Compassion is a harrowing tick. He's not rousing us for another round, he just feels it coming on again and there's nothing he can do to stop it. Sad really. Not really a contradiction, but Chris Frantz's rolls and fills are all over the show. 3 I find this album deeply irritating. It takes a great deal of trouble in producing musical (and lyrical) gestures that yell ‘Look at me I‘m odd!’ but amid the awkward guitar lines and declamatory vocals there is very little risk taken with the actual songwriting. There is a difference between originality and arbitrariness in design - between musical inspiration and musical contrariness. There is no appreciation of those differences in these mostly merely stupid songs. This is Talking Heads’ first album so they always have the defence of naivety but I don’t think that’s what I hear. I hear a prevailing spirit of ‘why construct when deconstruction is so much cooler?’ It’s just contempt for the listener - I thought regularly of Lou Reed listening to this record, but not his good stuff. Byrne’s accuser in ‘No Compassion’ is wrong. Byrne does not have so many problems (a charge Byrne is pleased to repeat and not deny); he has one problem - vanity - and it radiates from this record. 2/5

Classic talking heads sound. Didn't do much for me except for psycho killer is always amazing. The rest of the album easily forgettable for me

This album was mediocre. I didn't enjoy some of the songs, especially The Book I Read. I feel like the musicality is weak (poor singing, basic structures). Does include the iconic "Psycho killer".

It's David Byrne. It's weird but also has a listenable quality.

This album got me existential about the definition of art in the wrong way. I thought, “Oh, this must be Art Rock.” Then I thought, “Isn’t all music art? What differentiates Art Rock from, well, from Rock? Because it’s not like the rest of the world of rock is less artistic simply by virtue of not being genrified thus.” And that started a long train of thought about something mostly unrelated to the album, which then ended. Psycho Killer was pretty good.

Honestly not as good as their other stuff but of course psycho killer is fab. Original version doesn’t include sugar on my tongue which is also great. Tropical vibes and great bass lines but not their best.

5.5/10 Highlight: Psycho Killer Best of the rest: Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town

Nice listen but not very memorable

Not as chaotic as their other albums

77 talking heads and they couldn't come up with a better album cover? Actually no wait, I guess that makes sense. Has a good beat, easy to dance to, I give it a six.

I had this one sitting in my collection for a long time, but never got around to listening to the full album was only familiar with “Psycho Killer”. Probably to listen to it a few more times to appreciate it. Light funk background music.

3.3 stars rounded down.

Further evidence of The Author's bias toward debut albums. It's a fine album. Is it as good as "Remain in Light" or "Speaking in Tongues"? It is not. Minus one half star for overuse of "Ayy ya ya ya ya ya yaaaahhh...."

Another band I used to love a lot that I've cooled off on over the years.

They get better with age, for sure. David Byrne especially!

"I sure hope there aren't any more Talking Heads records on here." -a happier me, one hour ago (As with the other three TH records I've gotten on this list, I will emphasise that TH's general sound is great – but David Byrne's voice is really bad and comes close to ruining any song he appears in.) 3/5 Key tracks: Happy Day, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up

It’s ok.

love the talking heads in general but this isn’t my favourite album of theirs so meh

Good music, but not my jam

Psycho Killer is amazing. The rest is ok

Cool 😎

I don't know what to make of this. It sounds like a novelty act that somehow became a one hit wonder, even though I know they had a successful career. They deserve recognition for doing something different, and for their influence on music. I just don't find it very enjoyable to listen to tbh.

Not bad to listen to, but nothing really that exciting.

Not my favourite Talking Heads album - as someone born and raised inaired on Stop Making Sense, these versions inevitably feel a little washed out. Plus, it hasn't got all the vibrant wacky percussion and run the that they got known for on their later stuff, which is a shame. The stand out songs are great, but it's not much to talk about outside of them.

I like that they have a distinct sound but it's not for me. Besides Psycho Killer. That song is a 10.

Hmmm - not for me

This is the first Talking Heads album I've listened to front to back. Dont know how it took me this long. Byrnes vocal style is iconic. Even from the beginning the Talking Heads signature style is obvious and upfront. I really liked"Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town" with some cool drums, "Tentative Decisions" and "No Compasson." While the album was fun to listen to, I'd characterize it as very good but I probably wouldn't listen to the whole thing through again. Talking Heads certainly have an energy that holds your attention and makes you want to listen though.

Phyco killer is ok De rest valt mee.

I wanted to like this one more, but it was not to be. Still good, but not as good as I wanted.

Decent. 3/5

Not that memorable but psycho killer is addictive AF.

Feels classic

It isn't my favourite "Talking Heads" album... it's OK. 3/5.

3 - Ah I really wanted to like this, but it started to annoy me a little bit. Still good, but expected more. Psycho Killer is great

This is pretty mid at the first listening, but has some potential.

Talking Heads certainly stand out with their own style. This debut is good but they are still developing their craft. "Psycho Killer" by far the best song on 77 with the rest decent support. They improve over the next few albums. 3.25 stars.

I very much like Talking Heads, and this is a good debut. They really reach full stride (in my opinion) on their 2nd album. That being said, this is good if your into weird autistic music.

I kind of liked it.

i forgot how much i like "uh oh, love comes to town". rest of the album is fine, typical David Byrne weirdness. hopefully Speaking in Tongues is on this list too.
