Chaotic

Listen. I can't get behind someone making "music" out of sampling music from musicians whose residuals ran out or they never had them in the first place. Make. Your. Own. Art. Or, pay the ones who helped you make yours.

Erst dachte, ist interessant. Aber der Sound ist grauselig. Kann ich keine 5 min hören.

Different music. Not bad.

Couldn’t finish. Not my thing.

I hated this

I hate this - it started out ok but quickly made me want to rip my ears off

Uma das piores coisas que já ouvi!

I didn't like it.

Eletrônico....

Super weird Fatboy Slim/Pink Floyd vibe, not for me.

Kicks off with a cacophony of noisy street talk, random samples and high-pitched baby-doll vocals. I hate it. It’s never good when the you have to skip the lead track. However, I will persevere… Beats? Is this simply a DJ set? In the 1001 list? This is no Moby or even Fatboy Slim (not a high bar, either). What am I missing? Oh, I get it. It’s a house party soundtrack. I’m not supposed to be placing a platter of black vinyl onto my turntable then sitting back on a comfortable sofa to absorb it. I am, in fact, supposed to be at a party already, where layers of noise placed loosely over a solid kick drum / rolling bass arpeggiation keeps me tapping my toes, swaying my hips, sipping my margarita whilst shouting into the ear of whomever happens to be nearby, mirroring my own behaviour. No thanks. Side 2 isn’t getting a look in. Sides 3 & 4 will stay permanently inside their plastic sleeve.

Not for me.

sampledelia is not my thing i've heard samples enough to keep me till halfway into the next decade

Super repetitive, boring and overrated.

p870. 2000. 1 star. Tedious sampling album that detracts from the original songs, intercut with random, annoying, out of tune sound bites. WTF is this shit doing on the list?

Made my head ache worse.

Gave me a headache, hard pass. If they stuck more to the melodic sounds it could have been great but there were too many grating sounds. I have sensitivity to certain sounds, I have learned of the years, and some of the sounds in this album made me want to get violent if I could not stop listening to it asap.

Whoever decided to put more EDM on this list needs to re-evaluate what music "needs" to be heard. I feel like since I heard one EDM album I've heard them all: droning beats with songs that don't go anywhere. At least this album wasn't 2+ hours, and the music videos for Since I Left You and Frontier Psychiatrist were fun

Nicht meins. Instrumentals und Stimme haben mMn nicht zusammen gepasst

Dear God. What repetitive generic bullshit is this?

W.T.F. This is the most annoying album I have listened to ever. (Well until now, I sure there will be another album in the future that will piss me off even more but I will deal with that at the time.) Repeating the same few words over and over and over and over and over gets VERY irritating VERY soon. And what's with the adding of pop's and crackle's? Clearly a misguided attempt to make it sound like (a parody of) vinyl. I remember the introduction of CD's and how happy I was not to have to listen to that distracting garbage anymore. I do not want to be reminded of the general crapness of vinyl as a means of music distribution thank you very much. And finally unlike most punk bands I can't even excuse this abomination on the basis that the people resposible are incompetent a-holes who don't know any better, these people are actually competent (but defenitely a-holes) and have inflicted this on the world knowing exactly what they were doing. Unfortunately it is not possible to award negative stars so 1 star is the only option but it should really be -10 stars at least.

Sounds like an out of tune radio

Before this experiment, I would have said I was mostly indifferent to ambient, electronic music. Now, I mostly don't like it at all.

One of the few albums I’ve not wanted to even try to get through. Honestly, this is shit.

Tiresome cacophony of samples, scratching, crackling and 1970s disco-style sounds.

I don't know what this type of music is called, but I hate it.

I've never taken MDMA so the ceiling here was a 2. If you take out the unnecessarily repeated bits I reckon you could knock this out in 15 minutes or less.

I didn't get into this when it came out but thought I might enjoy it now. Unfortunately, I can't say I did. It's just not very enjoyable. I think I got about 5 songs in before I started skipping ahead to see if I enjoyed any of their music. I didn't. I can't quite out my finger on why I didn't enjoy it so much. I find it all very noisy and messy. There's a lot going on. 1.5 stars.

White noise.

I liked nothing about this

Nope. Simply no. Sorry

Alternated between annoying and boring. Did not enjoy.

Música rara del cambio de siglo.

At times fun, but really not for me. Electronic gives me such a headache that it's hard to enjoy. Favorite: frontier psychiatrist Least favorite: live at dominoes

Not for me

........ why?

I’m getting very tired of electronic music. Probably 2/3 of my generated albums have been dance/electronic and I do not vibe with it.

No Thanks.

Weird album, not into just the sounds Top tracks: Frontier Psychiatrist

This album is like listening to cool music in a really loud bar. Hard to hear the melodies, the lyrics, etc. Turned it off. Terrible.

Never heard of The Avalances before or what their music was about so quite excited to learn something new. Streamed the album through Roon which categorises music above the track list. One such category was “Funny Breaks” which I had not seen before and made me wonder if I was about to have a rib tickling hour ahead of me. Quite the opposite it turned out. It started bright enough and I thought I really had found a new musical delight but it quickly degenerated into turgid monotony. Others might complain about the overuse of samples but to me it was these that kept it half interesting, trying to spot something you had heard before and wondering where? It was the monotonous drone beneath the samples which hardly changed in tone or rhythm I disliked. Got half way and had to switch off. Will have to again concede as I often do whilst going through this list, that this music was not meant for me.

Weird techno

absolutely not. the whole idea bothers me in principle.

album make adhd brain go brrrrrr i did not enjoy it (too much horse????) but honestly, it seems like great workin' music. will probably listen again

Apparently I'm the only person in the group who's never even encountered the singles off this album and frankly that was a blessing. I've dabbled in sample-based songmaking before and can respect how difficult it must have been to create this album, but I just don't understand why you would. No track seemed to reach a sustained melody that wasn't the one being sampled, and mostly it reminded me of the Pogo imitations of the late 00s where The Bit was that people were using wacky or nostalgic sample sources. Sample heavy hip-hop builds a new topline or a pocket for rapping over, and something like Front 242 tends to build a club beat while occasionally having a narrative. This album, by comparison, felt like an exercise in understanding what it's like to have ADHD, punctuated by the most piercing tsew-tsew-tsew sounds available. I'd be willing to believe that the music was the runoff effect of someone's hobby of filing tedious sample-clearing paperwork with record agencies, like how my yarn collecting sometimes results in a crochet project. Highlights, while still dim, were portions of songs like ETOH and Summer Crane where a sample was actually looped long enough to create a rhythm. Little Journey even approaches the feeling of a hazy summer afternoon but then heralds a tempo and style change with something jarring that sounds like a guitarist squealing up the neck. I've often thought I might be impervious to resistance-breaking via music because I would simply Enjoy listening to portions of Enter Sandman repeatedly, but the CIA would just have to play the first 3-5 songs off this album and I'd falsely confess to whatever they wanted to hear.

⭐️this was a hodgepodge of sounds- I didn’t like it at all

Could not listen to one track till the end. Booring repetitions.

Blah, I’m not a fan of the loop/sample-based stuff. While it can be be done well, this did nothing for me at all.

Sample heavy and uptempo electronic music - I never really get what this kind of music is for, its not exactly danceable club music and is too busy to work as background music and too stupid to be worth paying attention to. It's what they play in a heist movie during a quick cut montage, or what you have to shout over to have a conversation because someone thought it'd be a good idea to have an annoying DJ at a reception but it's too loud in an echoey venue.

This has heavy background-music-in-a-Manchester-Northern-Quarter-Cafe-in-the-mid-2000s vibe. It is repettitive, light on the ears and, for the most part, relatively uninteresting to me. I prefer the IDM, John Hopkins end of the dance/electronic spectrum so this is feeling quite mild and middle of the road (not that I'm that edgy, I just like my electronic music either more frantic, more complex, or more transulcently-layered rather than a mish mash of samples). Life is too short - having read how the best songs are ETOH and Fantasy Psychiatrist, I am bailing before the end of the album (a rare move). These songs were not all that great and this relentless sample based mish-mash is getting really boring.

Piercing noise that is not music.

Bring most of the time, I was trying my best to find something I might like but it was pointless. I didn't like it

Not so impressed

Songs blend together as if one long set - meant to be heard as an album? Short samples bound by music. “Tonight” is my least favorite, although I didn’t really enjoy any all too much.

I would equate this to a 9 year old with a synthesizer.

can't stand this.

Dit was niks

I hate this album. I hate this list.

Dreadful album

Hmm I think I really hate this I have to keep skipping ahead to preserve my sanity but each song is worse than the last.

Not for me

Worst album yet. Would increase all the other ratings by 1 star if I could. It's that bad.

Not really my taste in music. But I did learn something. I had no idea who sang frontier psychiatrist, or that was the name of the song.

I don't care for The Avalanches.

Not my style

If you can tolerate pointless layering, pitch-shifting, and beat manipulation then this is the album for you. If you like music, move on.

Repetitive, bad, not easy listening, too long. 2/10

Not so much…🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️

No real sense of continuity, you could listen to this on random shuffle and it would make no difference. Critically acclaimed apparently.......

Didnt like 😑

Just not my cup of tea.

Just not for me at all

Not my music

Awful. 100% sampled patched together repetitive trash.

A la mitad me aburrió, no soy fan del tipo de música que parece un rejunte de sonidos, y eso me pareció

In the realm of albums exclusively built with other musicians' samples, *this* just can't compete with the first DJ Shadow releases. DJ Shadow had it all: mystery, breadth, scope, dynamics, groove, melodies, evocative nocturnal moods, a varied tracklisting... In comparison, The Avalanches sound like a one-trick pony. They're meek, one-note, even bland sometimes (sure, they're messy as well, but it's a mess that flattens everything out to the same sort of mundane, ordinary level). Pretty ironical when you beat the world's record of the number of samples used for a single album (or you're close to beat it anyway). It's not a surprise even the creators of this album had a lot of trouble selecting a track from it that would be a decent single. They say it's because you couldn't extract one out of the original sequence it's from somehow. But maybe the truth is simpler than that. Maybe it's because *nothing* actually stands out in this record... Number of albums left to review: 710 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 145 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 70 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 81 (including this one)

So we finally get an Australian act. Yay! What a let-down. Stitching together bits of other people's work isn't music. At least the first "song" has some sort of variation. But by the time you get to Flight Tonight all interest is lost. Can you seriously take pride in the never ending repetition of a few seconds of sound? Why MUST I listen to this? Music requires some musical skill. This just requires copy and paste.

Boring samples

Repetitive. Couldn't finish

I've heard "Frontier Psychiatry" before and thought it was pretty neat, but listening to the whole album I just wasn't into it. Maybe if I was stoned and in the dark and concentrating on 100% it would do something for me, but with a fairly passive listen I couldn't dig it.

Not really my jam.

Didn’t think I’d like based on the first 3 tracks, then surprised at how much shit i get done with this in my ear. ADHD powers engaged. Not sure if i like it or if i like the benefits….

me soa como musica ambiente so que eletronica, terrivel. os efeitos sonoros que tem em todas musicas se repetindo parecem aqueles de aplicativo de fazer beat. resumindo, destestei.

Not my thing at all

Nice enough songs, but they all sounded to me like they'd been recorded with a microphone left in the other room. Not for me.

18 tracks of noise pollution.

This is pretty tedious and I'm just wanting it to be done. At least ETOH was basically tolerable.

Didn’t like

Crazy energy but not sure for what? Maybe to out 🏃‍♀️ the Avalanche. Usually when listening to albums I’ll know the hits of the album and I knew every single “ None” of them. This would be great club music but not sure which club😊

I like a re-mix/edit as much as anyone, but this is tedious. Sounds like it was done by AI rather than humans...

This is not a bad album, it is just so repetitive that i had a hard time getting through it. No recognized xongs

Not my bag

I adore the two standout tracks—utterly fantastic blending/mashing of music. Those tracks are five stars. Everything else is tiresome—fast. I feel like those tracks are a promise and the album just completely fails to live up to them. I want to give two stars just for those favorite tracks, but if an album makes me want to turn it off… well.

Snap er niets van

Leuk voor op de dansvloer, maar niet om op een zaterdagochtend naar te luisteren.

This is not very compelling for me. The horsey sound that goes from "Stay Another Season" and bleeds into "With My Baby" is just disconcerting.

More garbage

Pretty boring and it lacks structure. I enjoyed 'Live at Dominoes' the most.

Oh, no-ise.

techno trash

Disco en vivo no hay problema pero neta electrónica? 2-3 rolas está chido pero no un disco completo. No entiendo a veces esta lista.
