Amazing album
Aged incredibly well, this is sampling realized to its full potential.
The avalanches are masters of the art of sampling. Okay if you haven't seen the music video for Frontier Psychiatrist you need to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLrnkK2YEcE also this video is a great audio reverse engineering of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epr8xDE3Kgk&t=4s The first time I listened to the avalanches I was relatively unimpresed but frontier psychiatrist in particular dug its way into my brain and struck me in a way few songs have. The more I learned about the avalanches and their methodology the more impressed I became. Also, it was an Avalanches interview talking about their favorite examples of sampling that finally pushed me to check out Wu Tang Clan cuz they pointed out that they sampled the underdog theme for one of their major songs.
I really liked this album. A good mix of sounds that flow well together. Great for work music.

Weird vibe-i-ness

I've never heard of the Avalanches before this. The first track (and the fact Apple Music lists this as just "Pop") tricked me into thinking this was a Jackson 5-esque thing. The second track was just a continuation of the first one and it became obvious is wasn't. Some of the tracks were super repetitive, some seemed to just have random sounds thrown in as a quantity over quality thing. However, I will say this is the type of album that belongs on this list. Even though I didn't enjoy everything, there were certainly sections where I was getting into it, and overall, it's a very unique sounding album. Favorite track: Two Hearts in 3/4 Time. Also Frontier Psychiatrist.

One of my all time favorite albums!!! Finally we get some dance music. Love that it keeps the energy flowing from start to finish. This album features no original music, as it is produced from thousands of samples from thousands of records. A one of a kind album that I’ll always love.
Pretty good instrumental album. Many songs ran a bit long and were too repetitive for my liking.

Stimmungsvoll, reichhaltig, leider anstrengend. Spezielle Stimmung, verträgt keine Ablenkung. Klingt die ganze Zeit, als ob der Gesang gleich einsetzt. Versatzstücke. Gleichzeitig wie im Hintergrund, Atmosphäre und aufmerksamkeitsheischend.
"Since I Left You", "A Different Feeling", "Electricity" are beautiful. I was previously familiar with "Frontier Psychiatrist", but not The Avalanches themselves. "Flight Tonight" and "Diners Only" are repetitive to the point of annoying. The back half of this album is surprising the better than the A side. This would be a shoo-in for 5 stars if there weren't a few irritating tracks throughout the album. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
This is an interesting album. I don't know what genre to call it. It's like an upbeat ambient electronica album. Nothing like the dubstep/house music of the later 2000s and is ongoing. It's catchy and can brighten your mood but it's just a little odd and inconsistent for me. I didn't dislike it but I don't think I would say its an album "You Must Hear Before You Die" and I won't be looking to relisten to it again any time soon. 2 out of 5.

interesting techno album
I’m really getting tired of these “sampledelia” albums, but it wouldn’t be fair to rate this one too harshly simply because it appeared on the list after several others of the type. So, in the interest of objectivity: it’s not terrible, but it wore out its welcome pretty quickly, which is unfortunate as it’s an hour long…

I recognize the skill, but the was to much repetitivness and random animal sounds for me.
I missed this one as didn't have time to listen that day, but came back a few days later and am bloody glad I did!
Over-long and you really only need to listen to one song to know what the album is like.

Frontier Psychiatrist was my jam in high school when this album came out and it's still a bop

The negative reviews on this are hilarious. Half "lack structure" half "too repetitive" both wrong, it's "intricately structured and masterfully repetitive". Also, this level of sampling IS original music. An Em chord is no one's music, just as the hundreds of sounds and phrases used on the record are no ones music, sans the Avalanches of course. This album is a Masterpiece and all who listen shall know. This is the album that the Monalisa and the Moonlanding recorded on the great barrier reef during the Tanguska event
I've listened to this album numerous times, but it's one I'm definitely guilty of putting on "in the background" and not really listening properly. So it was nice to give this a couple of closer listens. It's an incredibly unique album, and definitely one I would recommend to people looking to get into electronic music. There's so much to delve into here, and many of the layers will only peel back with repeat listens. It occupies that interesting niche of music (along with Boards of Canada and Cocteau Twins) which makes me feel nostalgia for things that I may or may not have experienced in the past. I do think it is a little long, and there are a couple of tracks in the middle that I wouldn't miss if they were left off. However, it's still a solid 9/10.

I rate it: came into this album not feeling it from just the look of the album. You can imagine my face when I recognized half the tracks and clocked DOOM collaborated on one of them (not on the album). This felt like a strong electronic album with strong beats and sampling which was just perfection. Do I think it's the best? Not by any means but almost felt like a slightly less experienced Daft Punk and I'm here for that.

Echt geen idee wat ik hiermee moet. Beetje poppige elektro, maar dan zonder zang. Niet echt dansbaar, dus dan blijft er weinig over. Het is ook niet super slecht of onluisterbaar ofzo, dus dan maar 2 sterren.
Electro pop en folie
It's a bit weird, but there's some nice vibey tunes in here. All weird samples flowing into each other. Frontier Psychiatrist is brilliant and elevates the score a bit, but overall it's a bit mad and chaotic for me to revisit or to have as a go-to background chill mix.
Come for Frontier Psychiatrist but stay for the rest of the album, especially the title track, it's just the epitome of early 2000s sunny dispositions. A ton of samples all layered together to weave a tapestry of feel good vibes, shame the world would come crashing down less than a year after this debuted and feel good jams went on the back burner.

This is a top 10, maybe even top 5, album for me. The level of compositional skill displayed is really unmatched. There’s no bad song on here for me and I could listen to this album daily and not get tired of it.
Very chill and very surprised I didn't know about it previously. Definitely see it's influence in the likes of Dangermouse, later J5, and more. This is literally the textbook on how to properly use samples.

Heard before. Really like the concept they went with, as in making an entire album with samples. Appeals to me. Yet still a 3, because the songs don't stick with me. If you can tolerate pointless layering, pitch-shifting, and beat manipulation then this is the album for you. If you like music, move on.

Album starts very strong with a couple tracks that modernize the 70s groove. After that, they still use those 70s elements, but start fading into a lot of experimental work. It’s not bad, but a little much for my taste. Mid 2.

It's alright. It's not really my style and I doubt that I'd listen to it actively in the future, but I recognize that it's well done for what it is. I like the concept, I just don't love the execution - not because it's bad, just because it's not my jam.

Instrumental hip hop right up my alley. Shocked that the only song I'd heard from it was Frontier Psychiatry ("that boy needs therapy")
As sonic wallpaper while I worked it was fine, but I don't know why someone would deliberately sit down and listen to this.
This one was okay. It had static sounds that my ears are sensitive to. I liked the beats but I wouldn't listen again.
Some fun DJ music. Not as heavy as let's say Daft Punk, but very heavy into incorporating samples into every song. It's fun seeing all the puzzle pieces come together to create music.
This album provided decent background music for getting some work done at the office over lunchtime. Not sure I'll be listening to it on the regular.
I read that they didn’t think anyone was going to listen to this, so they didn’t bother keeping track of the samples they were using until the international release became imminent. It really tickles me thinking about the team of lawyers trying to decipher what needed clearance and what they could get by with.

I often say an album is at perfect length or overstays its welcome. But in this case, it could've been longer, it's just that good and fun! 9,5 out of 10

While I understand why this received the critical acclaim that it did; over 900 samples integrated seamlessly and creatively into a cohesive and interesting record...I still had to force myself to listen to the whole thing. It just wasn't enjoyable.

A dozen songwriters is exactly as scattered as it sounds.
Some good beats and mixing. About 50/50 on the songs that I like/wasn't a fan of. Sometimes the songs started off good with samples with samples that didn't really fit later on in the song (or vice versa).
The sample work is rich and impressive but it really is not my kind of music. Samples of female singers, then high-pitched? Nah, not for me!
This is a great example of an experience album, where there's not necessarily a singular song but running themes throughout the album. The exception to this is the well known 'Frontier Psychiatrist's which I think is a great song but definitely is different to the rest of the album, sort of giving a mid album break. 100% has made it in to my top albums of all time, kind of surprised I hadn't listened to it sooner.

Reminiscent of my early days playing with Acid and Sound Forge as a kid. Learning about loops and layering and planning and affectation. Definitely a high water mark for this genre at the time, and would’ve been a nice lead into my Fatboy Slim phase. I like its freshness and space. It’s nicely optimistic.
Excellent album, and absolutely perfect example of sampling done brilliantly. Absolutely loved this one. Frontier Psychiatrist is the stand out track but the whole album passes beautifully.

Having never listened to The Avalanches before, this just became a solid staple of mine. The attention to detail on this is off the charts, while still appearing coherent throughout. An absolute delight!
Good looking even coming close to naming all the samples featured on this extremely detailed and well produced album. The Avalanches is spewing beats at such a pace that it’s hard to keep track of everything; and somewhere along the ride I almost lose the grip myself.
An undiscovered gem, Since I left You is a great opener and discovering after all this time that Frontier Psychiatrist was created by them blew me away.
Just not my cup of tea.

some tracks are nice but most are very “royalty free” reminiscent. then again if someone handed me this record and some drugs of their choice I think I’d have grand time. instead I listened on a cold and rainy august day. I fear I fudged the ideal conditions for the avalanches.

Seemed to have promise but not feeling it.
Plunderphonics is an interesting genre, in that its basically taking sampling to its extreme, to where songs are nothing but the samples themselves. And Avalanches apparently used like 1000 or so, which is unbelievable to me and must have taken endless amounts of time. So hats off to their determination to make such a record. However... I was kinda bored for a lot of this. There was a ton of chopped up vocals and decent grooves, but it just never progressed for a lot of the record, and it quickly just felt like alright background music. A shame, because I did really enjoy Frontier Psychiatrist, which did feel like a individual song here that even kinda had a chorus to it too. More songs like that would have allowed me to enjoy this better.
- Heard this many times before - Another classic, still yet to hear an album that uses sampling as well as this does - Frontier Psychiatrist is such a good song - No filler for an hour is impressive - Fav songs: Frontier Psychiatrist, Since I Left You, Electricity - Side note: Unbelievable that I've had 4 albums in one week that have been instant 5*

Wow. I haven’t listened to this whole thing in a LONG time. Forgot how psychadelic and borderline schizophrenic it is. This is amazing.
This album has one of the most personally life-changing songs I head in my 20's ("Since I Left You,") Which was so bright and prophetic and singlehandedly steered me toward the kind of sampling I love in my musical life, and for which I have thought about countlessly in the years since hearing it for the first time. And yet, for silly reasons, I never got around to hearing the album that it came from. Sometimes a single song shines so brightly, it's like a mission statement and the whole thesis in itself, the premise and the conclusion. That's how I always felt about "Since I Left You," the title track. So I never ventured further. What a mistake! The whole thing just cements the sheer ambition of The Avalanche's Project, and how *much* further along in this stuff they were than anyone else at this time. The whole thing plays like one huge dance party, one big hurrah through the fantastical words they make. And it's funny! It's SO funny at times. I am awed by the ambition, the aesthetic, the originality, and the pure FUN I feel throughout this record– doubly so once I remember that they probably did this whole thing on ancient sequencers that are long defunct!– and I had such a great time. A one-of-a-kind record that I'm so happy exists. 5/5

Ces avalanches ont sans doute été victimes d'un directeur artistique sous cocaïne. Je suppose que c'était leur première et dernière apparition dans le générateur du limité intellectuellement Robert.
The Avalanches viennent nous proposer un album complétement à l'image de leur nom: un bordel sans nom. On ne comprend absolument pas quelle est la proposition artistique, les chansons toutes plus débridées les unes que les autres s'enchaînant sans aucune cohérence. Fort heureusement l'avant dernier titre ayant pour but d'imiter un maximum les Daft Punk, en répétant en boucle "Around the world around the world" fera mouche et permettra de conserver les 3 étoiles accordées à chaque album par défaut au lancement de la première piste.

Just an incredible album
This album was made in 2000, but it sounds like it belongs in the 70s. I'm not really sure why this is on the list. It's just another 70s album in the 90s. Nothing to write home about. At least the nice thing about 70s albums in the 90s is that the formula was perfected twenty years prior, so they tend to be easier to listen to and are less offensive to the ear because they already know what doesn't work. That said, there's likely a better suited album for this list that was made in the 70s rather than this album that wasn't.
Just not for me at all
Lots of times with electronic albums from this period, it's hard for me to evaluate the album because it's hard to know how groundbreaking something was without researching it. The novelty of the sounds fade over time and are lost in a wash of imitators. This is not one of those albums. It's not just that it's obviously groundbreaking for the time, it's that it still sounds novel. It's just a great album all the way through. The execution is incredible, which is a real achievement given the technology it was made with and the number of samples involved. Just incredibly fun, innovative dance music from down under 5/5

I listened to this years ago, clicked ‘Since I Left You’ and then rather disintegrated rest as a ragbag of plastic soul. Which turned out to be unfair as this is a lovely, summery cocktail of an album. Maybe veering a bit towards the cheesy on occasion, but it’s just made with such obvious pleasure and the desire to give pleasure. Sunshine for the ears.
Really enjoyed this album. Can appreciate the musical mastery behind combining so many loops here, and how it inspired others is just phenomenal. Love this style of music.
Great band, amazing album. I was a fan of few of the songs from "Since I Left You", they have a really catchy beat and melody, usually interesting vocal, but the best thing about it is the music video to the singles. It's just so captivating, weird, sad and funny, perfectly encapsulating what the song is about. I'm just a big fan of this album, I like how the track flows fluidly from one to another, with certain themes being explored again under a different light. Looking for a vinyl of this band straight away!

This is very chill and easy to listen to music. Nothing super jumps out at me, but that isn't a bad thing. I rather enjoy this. I can easily vibe/listen to this. They give me big Fatboy Slim vibes. Overall pretty good. Nothing really jumps out, but it is easy to vibe to. A low 4/5

I ended up liking this album a lot more than I thought I would. I didn't know how I'd feel about something that was mostly just samples but it was really good.

Ehh, this is the kind of electronic that does nothing for me. It’s scattered and feels like an MF Doom album without the rapping. Frontier Psychiatrist was ok.
I would expect to hear this as background music in a bar. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen but it's not terrible.
A much better sound collage than the Incredible String Band. I never need to hear this again but it was an interesting album to listen to.

Such a fun album! Pairs well with a sunny summer day. I’m not as in love with this album as some are, but even leaving aside the amazing technical effort put into this album’s production, the appeal is very easy to understand. The compositions stand strong, separate from the samples from which they’re sourced. Very well deserving of a spot on this list!

What an absolute classic! Showing the power and creativity of sampling. These guys are as much an enigma for Australian dance music as Daft Punk is for French. So good, and so many grooves on this thing. Epic.

Sprawling and complex, hard to really connect with the vibe. Some moments felt like an onslaught of samples without a cohesive purpose. I appreciate the artistry of this, but I’ve enjoyed many other electronic albums that were much simpler than this. Impressive that this has over 3000 samples and no live parts, but sometimes less is more.
A pretty entertaining record the first few goes but, over time, the smartness of the samples and the frontier psychiatry jokes wane and interest diminishes. Still, stands as testimony to cut and paste and making something new from the old.
I really loved Since I left you! The whole album is very smooth, even though it doesn't have everything. It's Chill, lo-fi, but also very high-energy and extremely creative. Some albums feel long even though they're only 30-40 minutes, this album felt very smooth, even though it was a full hour it went by very quickly. Absolute rollercoaster of an experience, 5/5. Favorite songs: Since I Left You, Stay Another Season, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Little Journey.

This just feels like a live DJ session or an underground mix tape from back in the day--in a good way. Nothing I would ever listen to regularly, but it was fun enough.

Very early Gorillaz Daft punk vibes. Album got better and better as it went on, unlike most albums. Rating: 4.5
Didn’t enjoy much, not as developed as other albums so far. Didn’t want to listen again. While I lie the singles, the album together didn’t do it for me 5/10

I often wonder about the attention span of artists who can perform full length albums like this. Girl Talk All Night is a particularly masterful example of what I'm talking about. Another album where the track delineation is somewhat arbitrary, "Since I Left You" is an hour-long soundscape that weaves in and out of itself leaving me wanting more. Frontier Psychiatrist is a standout track here, and probably the one most of us have heard. I can't tell you the name of any other track on this album since I didn't notice where one began and the other ended. Taken as a whole, this whole album is an experience.
Didn't know about these guys until know. Quite solid. Every track flows seemlessly to the next one. Radio and Frontier Psychiatrist are standouts. The tracks have room to breathe for some fascinating samples using funk, pop standards and various influences. Fades a bit at the end but this was an enjoyable listen.
This album is certainly strange and new to me but I like it.

Insanely amazing
This was a pretty awesome listen. I could see it being a 5 upon a relisten, but for now it's a strong four. I would love to pick up a CD of this. The songs flowed very seamlessly into each other, though the effect is kind of lost since I listened on a streaming service with ads. Still pretty cool though! My favourite songs were Electricity, Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life, and Frontier Psychiatrist, but favourites are hard to chose.

I kept wanting to hate this album, but then it would just reinvent and reinvent and draw me back in. I had never heard it or really of the band at all and I was just fascinated by it particularly because I didn't and haven't read the back story about who they are. Just enjoyed it cold and was pretty impressed. Great collaborators as well. I thought this one was pretty cool.
Warning! This is not for everyone, but if you like doing cocaine ... like Avalanches of cocaine, they you're' in luck!
I got pulled out of the trip hop vibe trying to figure out whether the lyric to “Radio” was talking about noodles or doodles and what they had to do with “sending those signals.” It was apparently just “those digital signals,” but with some kind of effect on it that made it sound strange. Same thing on another line in that repetitive song. There are some great vocals and samples on “Since I Left You,” but they are often either overused and repetitive, or have a stop/start disruption that hurts the flow of the song.

I didn't appreciate just how good of an album this is until the listen today. Electric from start to finish. Great range of tracks that flow effortlessly into each other with truly incredible transitions. You could write an entire review on how perfect the transitions are and just how much they add to this listening experience. They have struck the perfect balance between a fun and inviting album that leaves you fully engrossed, whilst also having challenging passages that keep you guessing with wild samples and beat switches. You can feel how much effort was poured into this album, yet it never feels overdone or smothering. 5/5 Fav Track: Radio

This is another formative album for me. I torrented it and listened to it on my iPod constantly, so the whole thing is burned in my memory. It was just so cool and like nothing I ever heard of - the use of samples to form a coherent piece that moves throughout the entire thing was just so cool, and frankly still is. All these years later it still feels fresh. It introduced me to a whole new world of music, and for that I'm forever grateful. Also, if you haven't seen the music video for Frontier Psychiatrist, check it out, it's a lot of fun; I tell my daughter that she's "a nut; you're crazy in the coconut" all the time. She's a baby, but I'm sure she'll appreciate it some day

A brilliant original album which hasn't dated since I first heard it over 20 years ago. The videos for both Frontier Psychiatrist and Since I Left You are also brilliant and worth checking out.
I started off thinking this might be a 4 because it had the vibes of Chicago and the Jackson 5. Then it started to be too much and I was thinking it could be a 3. By the time I stopped listening to it, it was clearly a 2. There was clearly some talent and good bones to the songs. But it all became too cluttered. It's like they had a quote of having to overlay 12 tracks over each song and were having a hard time coming up with ideas. Good artists know when they are done with their work. Unfortunately, the Avalanches never figured that out. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Enjoyed this more than i was expecting.
What they do with sounds is an interesting interplay. I’m familiar with the follow up to this but I’d never dived in on this album. What I found was a fine piece of experimental electronic music. One that mixes samples well and provides a unique listening experience.
Stoked to have this one on my bday. Keen to give more close listens in the future as its been a long while but this is beautiful, exciting dance music with incredible transitions and sampling. My only gripe would be that some tracks play a little straight where I think they could go slightly funkier/glitchier. Strong four and a half! Fave track: Flight Tonight/Electricity
This is an all-timer. I first heard this record when I was about 13 years old and fully thought I was going to make music exactly like this when I grew up. This album appreciates with age; I love it more than I did when I first heard it - second-to-none production in a style that still feels fresh. Gold standard mixing and exact flow between tracks that just also happens to be super fun to listen to and makes you feel like dancing or bobbing your head along at the very least. It’s a perfect summer afternoon. 5 stars - one of the great Australian albums. Fave track is Electricity.
This is a ton of fun. I was only really familiar with the Avalanches' 2020 release "We Will Always Love You", so I enjoyed getting to go back and give this one a listen. I wasn't familiar with the term "plunderphonics" before this, so this form of ultra-sampling was neat. Familiar but remixed to the point of something new. Very danceable.
That was a fun ride. “Frontier Psychiatrist” is absolutely infectious. You can tell this act had an influence on a lot of more mainstream acts including Kanye West.
Kinda middle of the road album for me, I wanted to like it more. Seems like technically very well made music but nothing really gripped me.
Cool concept, having an album of diverse sample based songs. Individually some songs are extremely interesting and catchy, but as a whole the album lacks direction in my oppinion and feels as if they created songs that were not really finished or even hit a climax. 3/5

I'm not massively into nostalgia, but this whisked me back to 2000, when I'd just left home and started uni. "Since I Left You" is still one of the most upbeat tunes you'll ever hear, and I love the way The Avalanches added hip-hop to the hideous "chill" genre; it gives it more texture and backbone.

Great best album so far
The first great Plunderphonics record, The Avalanches take digging through the record bin to another extreme, using all of their findings to create a smashing dance record. While not as earth-shaking as big beat, “Since I Left You” makes up for it in its unreal flow, seamlessly joining together songs with a head-bobbing beat with obscure samples. And since they approached it from a “no one’s gonna listen to this, let’s do whatever” mentality, they create the oddest collection of fusions seen this side of Melbourne. Great as both a pure dance record and as IDM performed by an alien mixtape. Standout Songs: “Since I Left You” “Radio” “Electricity” “ETOH”

I know this says 2000. This feels like an 80s type album with such heavy sample usage. Avalanche rock was dope, way to short. Electricity felt really jarring while listening. It goes from a quite peice to a louder cacophony and mellows out again. Tonight may have to last me all my life felt very melancholic, and the added static gave it an old time feeling of longing. Summer crane was an enjoyable track, gets very surreal at the end. Live at dominoes could either be a modern song or a song from the 70s, pretty good track overall. I think it was my favorite track off of the album.
Frontier Psychiatrist is a gem. That boy needs therapy.
I very much enjoyed listening to this record. If there was a disco album I'd put on when I invite my friends to a house party, this would be it. It's fun, rather complex yet accessible at the same time. Awesome. I don't give a 5 out of 5 often but this one deserves it.
Obviously love it
This continues the streak of really good electronic albums. The excessive sampling (over 900 in total, I believe) gives a unique and unified sound. Standouts aren’t really prevalent because of how good it is in general.
This grew on me as I listened - new and different, yet familiar. It's really well-layered and nuanced. Looking forward to giving it more listens, I think it'll keep revealing more and more each time!
It‘s an icon of the time. Incredible production, Cut-up-whirlwind emotional, funny, melancholic but never sad. So many of us back in the days (hehe) coming from different musical backgrounds could easily agree on The Avelanches‘ stroke of genius. 4.8
Never heard of these guys before this recommendation--first impression is unique sound, good rhythm, got my foot bouncing. They lean heavily on layering in ambient people chatting & conversation sounds
I think I've tried several times to get into this record through the years... I definitely don't dislike it, but to me, there's very little glue holding the whole thing together. That being said, 'Frontier Psychiatrist' is a certified ripper.
Very wacky album. First song is good. Gets a bit crazy. Frontier Psychiatrist might be the craziest song and sun up the wackiness of the album.
