Reviews (page 8 of 10)
Pretty good! Haven't listened to a lot of electronic music but the blending of all the samples sounded very impressive. Definitely a vibe.
Interesting. Since I left you is probably my favorite
I can appreciate it, but it's not my thing. It makes really exceptional background music.
A fun, disco-pop album created entirely by sampling songs & sounds from other vinyl's. This interesting piece of music can be played for any occasion to turn it into a good time, and each song flows beautifully into the next. This album has a combination of explorative innocence as well as deeper, meaningful sections when it comes to the samples being used.
2-3 richtig gute Songs dabei, sonst eher mittelmäßig...
Solid album, lots of different sounds but it still worked
Hmm interesting
Since I Left You is a masterpiece. The rest of the album is not really memorable.
I always thought 'since I left you' was 'since I met you' and now the song has a whole new meaning. I liked this album.
Sounds like a party. Fun, but definitely need to be in the right mood to truly enjoy. Might be good hype music getting ready for something. Album drags a little toward the end (like most albums do).
2 1/2 stars some crap but some good
This was a fun album to listen to. But a couple songs really just missed. But you can’t have it all.
alright album, but gets a bit tedious after a while. not really enough lyrics for the amount of vocals as well
"Tonight may have to last me all my life" (Tonight) Me parece muy interesante y un trabajazo que todas las canciones estén unidas unas con otras, pero al mismo tiempo eso hace que pierda un poco el hilo.
a few bangers, some padding, good background din
Listened to the album in full twice. Liked it for work music, probably wouldn't use it for anything else.
I really thought I was going to like this, I've listened to the Avalanches before, but for some reason this didn't hit the mark. Maybe tastes have changed
Wieder so ein klassiker der elektronischen musik. 3
Mixing / cutting, early thousand's electronic. A few of these songs have shown up on Gramatik Radio and the like
Very good. A little long and some of the songs don't quite hit but overall enjoyable. Title track is one of the best songs ever. 6-7/10
So repetitive. 2.5 rounded up just for Frontier Psychiatrist.
A masterclass in collage sampling, but sometimes doesn't get further than being the sum of its parts. 3
Very intense!
Ethereal, psychedelic, musical whiplash. Different and interesting but not really my thing. 80s dance party meets old western and arcade at the seaside. Enjoyed Since I Left You .
Some great singles but the rest of the album is repetitive
Odlican cil
Didn’t finish the album, wasn’t bad just not my cup of tea.
Hissimusiikkiia, ei hyvää eikä huonoo
Much messier than I remember
I feel like this should be more appealing to me than it is. Maybe it's that I'm not quite 100% today, but the electronic, dancy vibe just didn't do it for me. I'd be willing to give it another chance, so for now it's getting a really weak 3 stars.

Vrij elektronisch experimenteel, soms wel paar toffere zweverige plaatjes.
I’m a big fan of the hits off of this album but it tends to drone on when listening to the whole thing
6.5/10 FT: Since I left you
Well, another album that's new to me. But really, even in 2000 all this sampling must have been old hat, and with some of the samples being mercilessly looped, I found this album tending towards annoyance. Other than that it seems to be a run of the mill electronic dance album.
4/10 I can get behind the general vibes being put out here but I'm not sticking to any specific songs
Interesting album - never listened to this artist before. Is a mix of electronic r and b and rock. Is like a continuous song for over an hour - is a chill vibe. 2 rating for me
1/3 of the way through and Since I left you sounded like such a nice opener to a summer fun album with beers buds and a lake shore beach, then it dropped off the face of the planet from there. We'll see how it develops. Electricity track and we have redemption. I knew the name was familiar here we go with Frontier Psychiatrist which is an absolute Tom Cruise banger. One good song in rotation, a novelty song, and the rest of the album forgettable as the waves receding into the lake and the beer is all gone.
Stark 2a.
I didn’t dislike this but it was close. Some good tracks in here. Decent enough sounds. There was one specific sound I heard earlier that really reminded me of daft punk, but I’m unfamiliar with their history so I don’t know who influenced who there.
Interesting sound, but it feels dragged out. Also, it feels like something was missing but not quite sure from these songs.
Stange to listen to. I didnt mind the first song, but from thst point I felt it kinda devolved into singing that was really boring. Was a strange mix of electronic music and hip hop. At points this was okay, but must of the time I made me feel nothing and was boring. Not much else to say this was a bit of a nothing album for me.
I honestly don't know how people could WANT to listen to this. Not sure how it makes its way into a 1001 album list. There is just nothing worth listening to here.
Man Idk these electro sample albums just are not my thing. I can tell this one is well done but it just bores the shit out of me. 3/10
Too much. Oh my. At the risk of sounding pretentious, but this album is like a Rubens. Eventually, it makes your eyes and ears hurt. Baroque paintings aren’t for me and neither are The Avalanches.
2.5
A 2.7
4/10
Zzzzzzzzz! SOS
Ehhhhh. It’s different and I like different but I’m unsure if I LIKE the result of their experimental sound
Interesting genre, would be better if I was on drugs
I kept thinking these songs had promise, but then the vocals would lose me.
I just can’t get into this group. Their samples often involve sounds and spoken phrases that come off more annoying than exciting or aurally pleasing.
"Is this song not done yet?" is a thought I had many times while listening to this album.
Since i left you - 4 Stay another season - 2 Radio - 2 Two hearts in 3/4 time - 3 Avalanche rock - na Flight tonight - 3 Close to you - 2 Diners only - 2 A different feeling - 2 Electricity - 3 Tonight may have to last me all my life - 2 Pablo's cruise - na Frontier psychiatrist - 4 Etoh - 3 Summer crane - 2 Little journey - 2 Live at dominoes - 1 Extra kings - 2
Not for me
I didn't really like this album. It's just a bunch of samples and beats mish-mashed together. Some of the combinations had an atmospheric and catchy nature, but I couldn't get into the majority of it.
Started promising. Then it kept going and going. There were a few moments scattered about that were fine, but overall forgettable
Plunderphonics er imponerende arbeid. Rytmisk dansemusikk med godt driv. Engasjerer meg dog mindre enn man kunne håpe. Top 3: Frontier Psychiatrist, Since I Left You, Live at Dominoes
I get the influence but I feel like many bands have done this WAY better since, Emancipator comes immediately to mind
A little heavy on the techno for my liking
First track rips I listened to a lot of future funk in my early 20s that this clearly directly influenced. You can tell gorillaz is influenced by this too The rest kind of devolves into cringiness
Ni me gusto
Overall: 4/10 Not terrible, but way too repetitive for me. I think you can make good dance music without the same beat repeating constantly. Fav Song: A Different Feeling
Still not a fan of instrumentals and this one was quite boring and repetitive, it was putting me to sleep.
Not for me but I didn’t hate it.
What is going on there, DownUnder? Sampling, lots of sampling, lots of squeaky, hippity-hippity-hoppity, repet, pet, pet, petitive sampling. Somebody get me a sedative. Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick. Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick. Somebody get me a sedative! This album must’ve been a lot of work to put together, but it runs long and I don’t think we needed a double album. The Avalanches tumble in at (2.0*s) Did I mention it’s repetitive?
2,5
Album 81 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Frontier Psychiatrist, Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life, Radio It's fine. The transitions between songs are seamless which made for an easier listen. I liked the horses in Stay Another Season. Actually, there's a lot of horse in this. Frontier Psychiatrist has some, too. This is the kind of album I'd accidentally hear while walking around at a summer music festival. I would do one of three things: I would keep walking, I would pause on the edge of the field to listen and then keep walking, or I would actually go and stand at the back for a little while and then keep walking. I would keep walking, though. Not really my thing.
Perhaps a bit too soundy for me but I’d like to try again in a different context. Frontier Psychiatrist is pretty fun though. I learned the term “plunderphonics” which is comedy and the album itself is all sampling - which i still feel I don’t quite understand despite a year plus of song exploder
The sample looping in this album is grating on par with Fatboy Slim. I'm sure it was fun to make but it's not fun to listen to.
Meh
Oh my GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD-AH
Would be fun in the right environment, sitting at work was not that place.
I'm sure it's cool in a club. But it feels a bit dull and emotionless on an album. 2/5
House music you need a decoder for. Favourite track: Tonight May Have to Last Me
I can appreciate all the mixing and sampling that went into this, but also still not think its that great.
I enjoyed the production, not so much the repetitive samples. They got old very quickly for me. I appreciated the seamless transitions between songs, though, but overall I didn't enjoy this too much.
Cool but not my cup of tea. Beautiful cover tho.
Another tedious and monotonous electronica album.
I'm familiar with some of The Avalanches work, but this album did not do it for me. It seemed repetitive and long. I wish there was more to say, but alas....there is not.
2.4 Sounds like there was alot going on but didn't seem to get anywhere, much like Chad Tithcott as a Peewee Hockey player. Appreciate the effort though
Eh. Tbh I really wasn't the biggest fan. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood. The repetition was pretty annoying after awhile.
Electronic/House just isn’t for me most of the time. This is one of this cases.
I didn’t finish listening to the whole album. I can only take music like this for so long.
What is this exactly? Techno? Acid jazz? I dunno. Not much for me to latch onto besides a thumping beats and sampled loops of audio bric-a-brac. Not my cup of tea.
Groundbreaking? For sure. Can it be done again? Unlikely -- and given current music laws, probably prohibitively expensive, would that someone want to. Repeatedly listenable? No, not for me. "Tonight" is antagonizing. "Frontier Psychiatrist" is arguably a classic. I need to be able to inhabit the space of the music. This album is, instead, more spectacle. I have nothing against samples -- I think the Beastie Boys' albums were pure genius on that front. I can see what The Avalanches set out to accomplish on this album, and for the most part they succeeded. In the end though, this album is, technically, and musically, exhibitionist. I'm just not the voyeur they're looking for.
Not my usual music I listen to. For me it was overall pretty boring and repetitive.
First time listening to this kind of "genre" and I was left with mixed feelings, I felt a lot of the samples were really repetitive and just tedious even though i did like some of them, The transitions are amazing and thats maybe the one thing that I loved about it. Might be a good album to just put in the background while doing something. Overall not my type but I can see why people like it.
The first song was good but it just went downhill from there. This is very unmemorable
Well, there's certainly a lot of samples! I was hoping it would be a surprise hit as everyone seems to rate this. Left me cold though. I won't be revisiting. You can't dance to this. You can't sing along...what were they aiming for? Impressing hot girls? Impressing nerdy boys? Impressing hot nerdy girls?Impressing critics? Definitely scored with the latter option. Just failed to impress me...
la primera ok... pero eh
I like the cover quite a bit it's not my kind of music, but it's not unpleasant like I imagined it would be from the words "electronica" very repetitive e eu cansei depois de tipo 20 minutos
Very oceanic make me feel connected to the waves and abit of the animals like the horse wasnt really my favorite music they were repeating words too much for my liking
Horse neighing in the back already sounds like the first song which i liked but what is this horse man... something is off about radio two hearts in 3/4 could of been peak but freddy fazbear is at the start im scared. diners only very nice instrumental. i like a different feeling but no words so its not gonna go in the playlist too many instrumentals. little journey could of been peak but then it tries to drow me in the middle of the song 2/18 ( since i left you ,diners only) too many instrumentals some were peak but then got ruined by the demons
I guess if you're into like sampling and sample creativity and sample culture and all that, there's something here for you. But for me... At best, passable background music and at worst, offensive cacophony of random samples.
What
Anxiety inducing sounds and scratching. It has some cool moments, but not worth battling through the album again to hear them.
Not my bag, some decent tracks, but way too repetitive for me, fine background tunes.
fatboy slim all over again, there are some good tracks midway through though
eh, not a bad sounding album at all. just didn't hold my attention. much prefer their 2020 album, we will always love you.
I found the genre interesting. I didn't know the band before. I was curious. I didn't like the music. It got on my nerves, so I couldn't listen to much of it. 2/5
To quote the Grinch: all the noise noise noise 2/5
Sampling is not one of my favorite music tricks but I’m sure there are songs / albums out there that I like where it’s been used surreptitiously. This album isn’t one of them.
Not my style
Pretty boring! I guess it's ok if you put it on as background noise at a party.
Not for me guys
2/3
Instrumentally pretty good in parts, but the vocals spoiled many tracks.
? dont get it
More boring electronic house music
Some of these beats were sick, some really weren't
Another meh rated elevator / dept store background music. Not sure what qualifies it for inclusion here. 2.5/5
Another day, another electronic album. I can appreciate the multi-genres being sampled, along with their tasteful placement in the production. But repeating the same phrase over and over in each song, along with throwing in overused scratching just seems a little lazy. Background music for sure.
Beep boop beep boop. So dang repetitive. This gets 2 “mehs”
Listened to this for another list and I didn't get it. I don't get it this time either. 2/5
I have some fondness for the songs that i had listened to outside of the album, but a whole album worth is way too much to not get boring.
I got bored of this and didn’t hear any particularly redeeming songs. A hard pass from me.
Too long and repetitive for my taste
a nice soundtrack
Lots of samples. First song is good, the rest tries to catch up..
Pleasant at times, but repetitive and not really goung anywhere
This kind of genre is really hit or miss for me, just comes across as a collection of background music to me I guess.
Great fun in places but so inconsistent.
Some fun beats but also slows down quite a bit. Pretty long album or felt like it. Nothing terrible nothing to search for either. 2.5 goin down.
A jumbled mess of repetitive samples.
I know there's an audience for this style of music, and I'm sure you mostly cone from good homes, but....
This is ahead of its time. Unfortunately, when they got in their DeLorean, these Australians listened to a particularly mid point in the Chilled Cow livestream, said, "That'll do," and drove back to 2000. The two stars for this album are for its prescience – it really does sound like a predictor of the lofi beats vibe 15 years early and, to my knowledge, just before Nujabes truly hit the scene. They're also for its structure, I do find the one continuous song a bold choice that I have to shout out. I enjoyed "Electricity" and "Frontier Psychiatrist" the most. The latter is an extended MF DOOM sample, which is cool – can't say it's cool when he does it but not someone else – but also, DOOM's extended samples are often the worst part of his tracks (meme reference easily searchable). Now, you're probably wondering why the album lost three stars. Well, it sounds like grating, repetitive, low-fidelity monkey shit! "Tonight" is a collection of the worst transitions in music history – like I said, Lofi Girl on an off day. I really should like this, but I don't, and that makes it even worse.
Favourite Track: Frontier Psychiatrist
Overall, a very repetitive album, it's a bit like LoFi but not really, but it's more like what they would play at the beach where I would go, where it was just the same beat and it would have someone talking over it, but also there would sometimes be that kind of not-so-bad stuff playing. Overall, quite a bit meh, nothing exciting, it became a bit more chill towards the end, but nothing too cool.
Day628 - i was in until about thirty minutes in and then it got old fast
Heilt adekvant bakgrunnsstøy
A bit noisy for me.
Boring music comprised of mixing other people's music samples with drumming and record popping noises. Who the fuck listens to this stuff? Or, is it just for use as background music at clubs and in movies?
not a fan of the album
More electronic music, but now from Australia! This was at least more lo-fi, and a little easier to play just doing stuff around the house. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
Started out refreshing and interesting and within 10 minutes I forgot it was even on and left the room while it was playing. When I would remember to listen I liked it, but it kept deflecting my attention, which has to cost it a star or two.
I listened to this and was intrigued for about 30 seconds then I turned it down and only perked up again when it restarted for those 1st 30 seconds.
I liked some of the beats but I overall found this a bit repetitive and boring. Not really for me. I liked frontier psychiatrist best - maybe for the novelty. Learning a bit more about it makes me understand it more but I probably won't revisit it. 2.5
I went into this completely blind. I’d never heard of this album or of these people. I don’t know what I was expecting exactly based on the cover art but it really was not this. Granted, I don’t know how I fairly could have been expecting this. I didn’t realize that you were, like, ALLOWED to Frankenstein this many samples together. Like, legally. It is surprising to me that an album like this could ever receive a mainstream release. It is surprising to me that apparently they’ve even been allowed to make some MONEY off of this. The whole concept feels like a reinvention of fanfiction by and for men who spend too much time on Pitchfork. Let it not be said that I’m opposed to the existence of fanfiction or that I don’t think it has its place as a form of creative expression, but is that place really on widely cited and respected lists of “Best Albums Of All Time”? Apparently. You can get away with a lot if you’re a man I guess It’s not terrible. (Not all of it is terrible. Some of the beeping/record scratch noises were really annoying, and whatever the hell that tinkling on the high frequencies of the opening/title track is was legitimately, physically painful to listen to, to the point where I thought that something had to be wrong with my headphones/debated quitting the whole thing then and there.) There are some good moments and decent grooves buried under the avalanche (ha) of unnecessary repetition and too much random noise. If it was playing in the background at a party or something I wouldn’t walk out of the room. But to me that’s pretty much all it’s good for, effectively—background music you don’t think too much about. The guys at Pitchfork can go on and on about how intricately woven this tapestry of sound is (this album sure did find its target audience there) but the thing about creating an album that’s an intricately woven tapestry of sound is that all the weaving in and out of so many tiny fragments of different tracks means that there’s just not much of actual substance to hold onto. Every time something interesting starts happening, it’s played out before I feel like we’ve really explored what’s interesting about it. And every time something interesting starts happening, I think about how I could just go and listen to whatever track they ripped it from in the first place. Ahead of its time, sure, but only in the sense that it predates AI-generated music cobbled together from bits of the existing musical corpus by machine rather than man by a solid twenty years. 2 stars feels a little generous. But again, there are some good moments. And objectively it’s an impressive work of audio engineering. I’ll give it that much, just for that.
Meh
One excellent song saves this from being a 1 star album
Interesting concept and execution but not my jam
this list sure does like dance/club music. the endless loops of redundancy are just not for me.
Nah, I’m good.
This is fun in small bursts. I've always like Frontier Psychiatrist. "You're crazy in the coconut!" But, like all purely sample based music, it gets too repetitive and annoying after just 2 songs. Can't imagine playing this album just to have a listen.
This is just not for me it feels disjointed and too random with no strong lyrics or hooks, just soundscapes. I am sure this would be fine as backgrounds music but not the best if you want to sit and listen.
Its ok, not my thing but a few tracks I liked
I might enjoy this as background music at a beach bar, but it gets repetitive and I would never choose this to play voluntarily
Pretty electronic but it was alright.
2/5. Just not my style of music.
Meh .. repetitive looped samples
..
I've tried repeatedly to enjoy this album, but the only saving grace is "Frontier Psychiatrist". The rest is just boring.
Just not my cup of tea but I can find something to like in these sort of albums. Track Frontier Psychiatrist.
This is ok but I never liked this as much as people seem to think I should
Usually, I like Electronica and EDM, but this was just too much sampling. I appreciate the effort it took to mix this, but 'plunderphonics' is the fitting name for this kind of music.
1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, entry for the day: The Avalanches "Since I Left You"... hmmm... it's pleasant music... but, it's a DJ/Producer type thing... loops that are spliced together to make a "song"... I used to do this type of thing on Maloa Warriors when we first started... so, i know it's an art form... and it takes time and effort to do that type of work... i have to respect it... but when you realize it's two guys on turntables with maybe a real bass and drums... it is cool, but not a monumental piece of art in any way... can you dance and groove to it? yes... is it cool background music? yes... should it be on any list with Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, et al??? oh hell naw... lol... i give it two stars... one for the chutzpa... two for the result... pass... PS... who did these people pay to get on this list? lol... zzzzz...
# Album Name: Since I Left You # Artist: The avalanches # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Since i left you and Frontier psychiatrist are great songs. Apart from that, the rest was a very underwhelming 50 minutes. # Top Tunes: Since i left you and Frontier psychiatrist # Would I listen to it again? No. Just the two songs.
sound ok for a festival, I wouldn't consider it songs or songwriting. These songs are just collection of samples, put together with a rythm to put people to dance. I lost the track of the songs, song names, meanings, or special features of them. These guys just picked a lot of forgotten records, took some samples, made the loops, and pretty much all, I don't even know this is worth mentioning
As an Australian, I got a bit excited at a “rock” and electronic album from a band that I didn’t know. The starting track was really great, and I was excited for where the rest of the album would go. However, it switched to an uninspired and music that sounded like, sound. Some tracks were decent, others just felt rubbish. Fairly disappointed.
The Australian duo of Robbie Chater and Darren Seltzmann belong in the genre ludicrously named plunderphonics (Audio Piracy as a Compositional Prerogative, a referential and self-conscious practice which interrogates notions of originality and identity, so you know). Basically like an artist making collage from cut up bits of magazines. I’m kind of sorry I know this because this album has a reasonable degree of artistic coherence even if the listener has no knowledge as to the source of the sounds. My problem with it as a listen is the problem I have with all edm which is the highly quantised, inhuman repetition. For me art is all about the human imperfections, the cracks where the light gets in.
It wasn’t horrendous but no way could I listen to an hour of that
I barely got through 8 songs…there is no way I could listen to over 2 hours worth. Mostly a bunch of noise. Two stars.
Repetitive stuff. And then there's ridiculous tracks like "Frontier Psychiatrist?" I mean, come on. I didn't know what to expect with a name like The Avalanches," hoping for a band of some sorts. Not this, I can tell you. Because the tracks bleed into each other, it w got boring pretty fast. There were one or two moments that were good, but hardly enough to put in "top tracks". Bleh. NEXT.
Australia has such a cool music scene. Sure, everyone is gaga now over Vance Joy and Tame Impala but it's a lot richer than that. Also much richer than ACDC, Midnight Oil, and INXS (the bigs of past decades). Their music scene from the 2000's might be my favorite. Still, this isn't part of it - for me. Two genres offered on Wikipedia for these guys/this album are sampledelia and plunderphonics. Sounds about right, which to me sounds over-sampled and spastic. Couldn't wait for the album to be over. But I did, which is why it didn't get a 1.
Essentially an album full of samples of other people's stuff.
Each song was very repetitive, not my vibe. Though I did like how the album blended together
This was way too long, way too repetitive and way too much like noise. But I did enjoy a song or two.
Ok as random background music for doing the dishes but not something I will ever be listening to again
I guess the only meaningful measure of quality of dance music is whether you want to dance to it or not. I didn't, not even with my feet
tivoli music. like, what am I listening to? horses neighing and bells jingling?
I'll give credit for the creativity of the sampling, I just didn't feel it particularly compelling. Just washed over me. A Different Feeling was probably the highlight for me, I thought it kind of had a Daft Punk feel Repetitive vocal samples can work but often they're pretty irritating, like Avalanche Rock which is thankfully more an interlude or intro than anything. The use on Flight Tonight is kind of annoying, it feels like a club track that just isn't that appealing outside of that context. I was a bit annoyed that the vibe turned into weird cinematic nonsense around Pablo's Cruise There's another song I've heard with Frontier Psychiatrist. It does an instrumental hip hop thing but i thought it was far too busy, far too many vocal samples and random noises like horses neighing and parrots and scratching (pretty creative to make scratching sounds out of a parrot sample though, to be fair) I can appreciate this but I'm just not that into it, personally 2.5 Highlights: A Different Feeling
Another electronic dance music album with a bunch of noises in each song that weren't musical at all. Unless they were the first artist to do such an album in this genre, I just don't see how any of this music differentiates itself from the other artists in the genre. Just an OK album in my book. 3/10 stars rounded up.
Felt like listening to an hour of fashion show music. Or like the music you'd hear playing at a trendy clothing store for teenagers. I didn't get too much out of it
Wikipedia says the album genre is Dance / Sampledelia / Disco / Plunderphonics / Art Pop, or to put it more simply: Prenttenious Trendy Boring Crap. Probably sounds much better in a club with hundreds of sweaty people when you've had some heavy medication, but not when you're sitting at home.
Oh boy. I’m annoyed already.
Moments of brilliance dot the cloudy skies of this album.
pass
2.0 - Weak
Oh look... more 90s/early 2000s electronica. I get maybe 2 or 3 albums but this is getting ridiculous. Nothing special about this in the least. 4/10.
It's been a couple of decades since I heard this. It was the go to album back at Universal for a brief period in early 2001. The office decks rinsed this pretty much all day. It kinda got on my tits after a while. It's useful as a game of Spot the Samples.
His didn’t grab me. This kind of party electronic stuff isn’t really for me I don’t think.
This was the first time I’ve heard of Plunderphonics. It was ok
It would not surprise me if these are the same individuals who were behind Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers.
Also was war jetzt das? Ein wildes Durcheinander von verschiedenen Klängen. Zumindest für mich ohne roten Faden.
Frontier Psychiatrist is really good (haven't heard it for years, but I can still picture parts of the music video) but the rest of it is not my bag.
Not a fan. 2/5
"Frontier Psychiatrist" was great, but overall this album is just a lot of sound bites and samples. It got repetitive fast, although I'm sure it took a lot of skill and time to put together.
repetivive, weird, annoying the cover art's nice though
What is this?
This is #day149 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this must have been a fun record to make. Still, when it comes to plunderphonics, a word I didn't know (so at least I've learned something while listening), I will always prefer DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. I couldn't really finish this one. It's a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day150.
This album is my first being one of sampledelia. It is a meticulously crafted record that is apparently comprised of thousands of samples, being more an encyclopedia of modern recorded music (though I recognize mostly nothing) than music itself; it disassembles and more or less reconfigures known music to this which I simply dislike. Who likes an encyclopedia being read out aloud?
Not really my thing.
Just find a groove!!!!!! This gives me the same terrible feeling I have when I’m brainlessly scrolling twitter, checking email, news, anything for some kind of breaking information for that endorphin hit. Let’s just pick a few samples and make something. I’ll give them another star because from what I read they were trying to create some kind of concept album, where it sounds like someone traveling following a girl. So fairly ambitious but they also abandoned that plan.
Not totally annoying, some cool soundscapes throughout, but really not my thing. Probably a bit of a blind spot on my part in not appreciation the work it takes to put together a collage of samples like this. The first title track song was nice.
Nothing exciting.
This wasn’t for me. I’m not a big fan of music that is all samples and I was bored most of the time listening to this.
I read the 'About the Avalanches' section on Spotify which described them as "wholly original" - preposterous! It's all samples, which by definition means it isn't original. Be that as it may, I didn't enjoy any of this after the first couple of minutes. The sample used in the first track was nice and started out well, but the track didn't go anywhere- it just circled round and round. Great if you're off your tits at a rave and dancing, but hopeless to listen to as music. Completely pointless.
I like the music a lot of the time, but the sampling is insanity-inducing for me. Too much repetition / looping for me to handle.
While listening to the album, I wasn't able to feel its vibe. The concept (if there's one) wasn't very clear throughout the album. In the end, "Since I Left You" is a jumble of samples and genres with no connection between them. It's possible to see that perhaps there was some idea for the album but this idea, unfortunately, was not well executed.
I’m going to be honest: this album didn’t do anything for me. Most of the songs rely on samples that are usually repeated over and over again. I get what it was going for. It an electronic vibe/dance album, so it’s part of the beat. But it mostly just kind of sounded annoying to me. I couldn’t get into it outside of a couple of songs. Honestly, Frontier Psychiatrist was the only track that sounded like a song. Everything else basically a lyric, repeating it over and over again, changing up a little for variety, and call it a day. If this is your sort of thing, that’s fine. But it’s not for me really. Favorite track: A Different Feeling Other hits: Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh, Electricity, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time
Not my thing
This plays like an experiment in cacophony and disonance. Barely listenable - there are some decent sounds, but they're all kind of mashed into a repetitive mess. I didn't waste any time beyond the first six tracks or so.
zu stressige musik, hat mir nicht gefallen
Teilweise mal ganz chillige Background music, aber meist hats mich echt gestresst beim Arbeiten. 2/5, nichts für mich.
Boring. I can’t stand hearing the same thing said/sung over and over and over again. Couldn’t make it through this.
If I hadn't been doing some mindless tasks at work while I was listening to this album, it probably would be 1 star. But I appreciated the filler background music that consisted of unnecessary scratchy audio and the same samples/bits/vocals being played over and over and over again.
I like sampled music, but this stuff is simply too repetitive for me. I need some more structure or somebody rapping verses over the top of it too mix things up. Makes me feel like I'm going crazy. It might be a better listen if I was doing dishes or something.
I expected this to be good. My bad
Respect this innovative approach to creating music called plunderphonics. Some enjoyable disco-like grooves but ultimately emotionally couldn’t connect with it.
Not an enjoyable listening experience. The little variance of the vocals & music arrangements from track to track proved aggravating & monotonous. In short really didn’t like it.
Won’t revisit. All instruments
if you like electronic & sampling, then this could be the album for you. unfortunately it's not my cup of tea. it was fine as good background music to workout to for about 15 minutes, then I got bored.
Didn't listen to it in full, but I got about halfway through and did not like what I heard. Not my kind of music whatsoever, the repetition in a lot of the songs just made them kinda grating to listen to.
Australian artists who should be on this list but aren’t: Midnight Oil, Kylie Minogue, Savage Garden, Natalie Imbruglia, Powderfinger, Silverchair, Killing Heidi, Missy Higgins Instead we get another dumb electronic group. Robert Dimery clearly has a huge bias in musical taste, and it’s getting really irritating. “Frontier Psychiatrist” was and will always be a banger. The rest of this album is a mix of lo-fi beats and Daft Punk with extra noises added. It’s repetitive and boring, when it’s not just annoying. 2/5
initially sparkling - packed with samples, which flash swiftly past - but that sparkle quickly dims. Not much substance beyond the question of "where was that from?"
Kind of all over the place musically. Nothing I would call particularly memorable.
OK
not my cup of tea
What if we did hip-hop without the MC 25 years later? Still kinda fun
Since I Left You - The Avalanches (2000) Pilhagemfônica As músicas são emaranhados de samples em loopings infinitos, há quem vá gostar desse sentimento drone e quem não vá, mas definitivamente você pode morrer sem ouvir. Melhores músicas: N/A Piores músicas: N/A 2/5
Some bright moments but many annoying animal noises to shake you out of the trance
A bit of a mixed bag with some parts being sublime and others missing the mark and devolving into noise. I keep bouncing between 2 and 3.
this worked as good background music and was pretty unique but nah, this is not for me
Not my style at all. Boring and repetitive.
Too long, self-indulgent and repetitive
Long and not for me.. few highlights though
I'd listened to this album some years ago and have not listened to it again until it came up on this list. I liked it ok. It's good background music to have on while you do something else.
Not my favorit. not much variation and recocnition from other albums.
It sounds like the second track samples a horse? Frontier Psychiatrist is an amazing track title and an ace song. Not only has this sampled a horse but not we’re getting a parrot…This has really lost me toward the end. Definitely ok for a background album but would not be my first choice. Nowhere near as good as ‘We will always love you’. Every track seems to promise something great then just fails to deliver. Ok no, Live at Dominoes delivers- I was hasty. Overall, won’t rush back for a listen.
20 years ago when I first listened to Since I Left You, I hated it. Way too EDM. A more mature me respects the DJ Shadow in The Avalanches. The album starts strong and fades, I like the songs with a more traditional pop structure 4.6/10
Outside of the title track and Frontier Psychiatrist this was incredibly dull
2.5/5
First one so far I have never heard of, never seen mentioned, never popped up on a playlist, never seen the album cover, etc. Turns out it's over 20 years old and there's now a Deluxe Edition. DJ dancy stuff - a lot of vocal loops that get super annoying after 4 minutes - but nothing revolutionary, zero new ideas and hardly cutting edge. These guys couldn't carry Moby's jock, compete with Groove Armada, Air or Thievery Corp, their early 00's contemporaries. Mixed like a DJ would, including needle sounds/static pop between songs, the only original idea here. I do like the song title "Pablo's Cruise", that's fun. The Deluxe edition has remixes by Stereolab, Prince Paul and others, they improve the tracks but there wasn't to work with. Another that does not deserve to be in the Top 1001. Two stars is generous.
no
How much electronica does one really need to hear before they die??
Dance music that doesnt make me want to dance
Decent but a little too funky. Good study music
This was alright. Very Fatboy Slim in terms of sound and ambience. I was done about a quarter of the way through the album and had to spread it over two days to even get halfway through it. I eventually gave up and skipped the second half of the album. Two stars.
It was ok. Didnt love it too much. It was a kind of interesting style of sample heavy electronica.
Scratchy. Repetitive. Not my genre for sure.
Ehh… not great, not bad 🤷🏽
I think there may be something great here but it drones on and repeats itself so often. Could be a good album to drift off to a bit but it didn't overly grab me. I didn't dislike the one listen though.
Seems like it's the audio equivalent of a mixed up box of old toys from the 1980s and 1990s I usually really mesh with this sort of thing, but this album wasn't doing it for me. Frontier Psychiatrist is pretty good.
frontier psychiatrist and ETOH are all that keeps this from being a 1.
This was...fine. Okay at first but it really began to grate on me by the halfway mark.
I'm still not into this genre.
I do remember hearing a song from these guys in high school and maybe even post-high school. Interested to check this out. This is not what I expected. Thought it was going to be a bit more indie pop.
An interesting listen, not anything I would have listened to without this site. The title track was quite good, or should I say it's video was quite good. It seemed to me the music was built around the video. Anyway that was alright the rest of the album was an ok listen, but not me really. Better than a 1 but only because of that video.
Repetitive uninspiring samples. 2 stars
Pleasant noise
dance, lounge, z.T. live, 2001 -> 2
Nicht so meins, versuchte es mehrere Male
A product of its time. Nice but unremarkable, with the title track being the highlight.
It's okay at places but what is the deal with the horse on the second track.
Mashing up music to create new music doesn't work for me.
Very much a mixed bag here. It's weird, some of it was fun, there's some interesting stuff, and unlike Throbbing Gristle this actually works as music rather than a collection of sounds. As an album...it doesn't work that well. It was kinda hard to get through and I very much welcomed the end of the album even though I didn't necessarily dislike most of the songs. A song from this band here or there to add some variety to a playlist is perfectly fine, but given the overall experience of the album I can't rate it very high. 2.3
Too chaotic for me
There are two stand out songs - we all know which ones they are. Otherwise it’s a lil dull tbh.
2. More like 1.5, but I'll round up. I guess some people like this kind of music.
Not my jam. Something I could happily have on in the background, but not an album I would listen to intentionally.
I can only take so much saampling
Didn't get to hear it all, but what I did hear was okay.
Nope. I don't care for this. Might be one of the better electronica albums I've listened to so far. And that saves it from 1 star. But I still don't care for it.
I'm not sure why I had such a negative reaction to this as the beats are quite nice and it's easy to listen to. But, I found myself not caring and thinking this was either groundbreaking or a wild misuse of sampling. Fun for a dance floor, not so much for listening.
Sadly, the jigsaw puzzle for sampled music is just not that interesting to me. Maybe with a spreadsheet id appreciate this but I think I have to be a 2
Frontier Psychiatrist I enjoy a lot. The rest of the album I'm not that into. WIll I listen to again: 5%
Nice to work, but when I hear an album like this I think about all the amazing albums I know that are not on the list and I scream into the heavens, “Why???”
Some okay. A little repetitive
Bleach
Dreamy
I know people love The Avalanches. I do have fond memories of Frontier Psychiatrist. But as a genre - it just doesn't do too much for me.
Meh, some good tunes but not really my thing
lol. No
Listening to this album is like a wide awake strange dream. This soundtrack would.make it weird without a doubt. This album apparently set the standard for sampling. According to some sources there are between 900 and 3000 samples used and reconfigured to create the songs. Horses, ship horns, scratches, the song "Tammy", " Lawrence of Arabia theme, dialog experts from I assume old movies. It is a strange brew.
If you enjoy repetitive sounds, loud dissonance, and the occasional sound of seagulls you might enjoy this album. There were one or two tracks that I enjoyed like ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’, but it was too much like the experience of an ADHD brain trying to understand a strange world for my liking. 2.2 stars
I guess I listened to the extended album that went over 2 hours. That alone pissed me off because I was just wanted this to end. I thought there were a few times I heard a nice sound or groove, but for the most part, just could not get into this, whatever they were trying to accomplish. 2
2. Had some alright songs and started fairly strongly but then just went a bit mad and annoying
A lot … even for me
I wasn’t sold on this album - maybe it has some sort of cultural importance but it sounded like lofi hip hop for the most part.
