Reviews (page 11 of 12)

It's a great sounding album and I really like the rap flows too, but I'm just not that big a fan of most hip hop albums. Especially when only listening to it once.

Not bad, but not good enough.

Hip hop amb consciència politica. Molt més musical i amb bases (i lletres) més interessants que gran part dels seus contemporanis... però res per perdre el cap

Superb beats, mid flows. 3 dinosaurs 🦖🦖🦖

3.5/5 The album grew on me over time. After the 3rd song I said to myself this 17 album song is 16 songs too long. But then, I recognized Nelly Furtado in a song I was actually, (admittedly), enjoying and realized I was being a bit of a dick.

3.5/5 It's a style of music I'm used to/like, and reminds me of my childhood. I recognized songs, which made me happy. I'm starting to think I need repetition and predictability. 🤣 Also, music from the 60's automatically makes me think there is some kind of historical context or reference and I get excited to research it cause I'm a nerd. 🤓

I keep forgetting

Surprisingly good, lots to like in old school hip hop :)

Highlights: What's Golden High Fidelity

Why this rather than the much better J5 LP?

MUSIC P-P-POWER! Jurassic 5, being from the west coast hip hop scene, definitely did not fit in to the contemporary sound. West coast leaned much more into hardcore and gangster rap, whereas Jurassic 5 are more chilled out with jazz rap and boom bap influences. So how does it hold up? It's not bad. Tracks like What's Golden and A Day At The Races are incredible pieces of work, with impeccable production and every verse being standout. Other songs are less memorable, but by no means poor quality or boring. I enjoyed Cut Chemists stuff quite a bit, but the whole group is worthy of praise.

3/5. Not many bad songs but maybe a few filler. Overall a pretty well rounded album.

Sounds very timeless

Way cornier than I remembered but three stars for What’s Golden.

This one was an interesting one. I think I enjoyed the jazz/rock beats more than the rapping itself, but that tends to happen with me and rap. I consider myself pretty open minded, so while this won't be in my rotation, I've added most of the songs to my library. Definitely worth hearing just once, and not bad by any means.

I was dreading relistening to this having been quite into J5 when I was a teenager but this actually stood up better than I'd feared. Still pretty derivative but enjoyable nonetheless

Enjoyable upbeat hip hop can’t help but dance listening to this. Deserves its place on the list.

The lyrics are solid and this group has a clear mastery of rhythm. The "chorus" sections are nice. Hip hop is admittedly not a genre I listen to much of, but I've never heard a group deliver the lyrics like Jurassic 5 is doing here. The backing tracks are a major turn off. In many cases there's only 4 bars of a very simple track on repeat for the entire piece with little to no variation.

I had never heard of this group or any of its songs. It was a pretty good hip hop album. It was a little long. The beats were good the lyrics were alright.

Chali 2na has one of the best voices in hip-hop, but this is overall pretty unexciting.

Good flow, beats and rhymes

Fine, bit corny. Feels like dated white guy hip-hop but I haven't checked if they're white guys - in many ways it doesn't matter. Basically a big shrug from me really

Buenas mezclas, ritmos y bastante sorprendente escuchar en 2002 algo más cercano al rap que al predominante hip-hop. Tiene la menor calificación que le puedo dar al género, porque después de 4-5 canciones me suenan igual.

This had some cool songs, but felt very repetitive by the end, like they didn’t have enough distinct ideas for an album of this length. 6/10

Good, solid hip-hop album from a powerful name in the genre

I expected to like this given all the 5 star reviews and this being an old school hip hop but I just couldn't care for it at all. Nothing explicitly wrong, just no impression left to the next day.

Pretty good, for a hip hop album anyway

Surprisingly cool stuff, many tracks with a groovy beat

At first this album seemed promising, but it seemed to drag on a bit and the songs seemed a bit too similar to my liking. Could be a lot more enjoyable if a few songs were cut

I enjoyed the production but it didn't blow me away

Enjoyable 90s rap

Ça va c'est plutôt frais (je peux relate)

A fine album

Solid album with diverse beats and flows. Nothing really stuck out to me but overall pretty good!

I was not familiar with Jurassic 5 and this isn't my usual music, but I have to admit this is a pretty good album. Smart lyrics, interesting beats, fun samples. I mostly don't enjoy hip hop but this won me over. I think that must mean it does belong on this list. My faves: Freedom, Thin Line, High Fidelity. 3.5 stars.

Why did it take me 20 years to hear this? I liked it much more than expected. When I seen a Rap album with the Parental Advisory: Explicit Content I was vary wary about what to expect. I like rap, in general, but I hate the over use of N****a, and the F-bombs etc. But, what ever lyrics that gave it this rating were tame compared to the crap I had to listen to with NWA, Ice-T, Common and other artists that destroy their albums by going way over the top with the language. This album has style and class and was very enjoyable with an ‘old school’ vibe. Damn, I loved it. The beats at the beginning of “break” is very nostalgic of some of the early rap that I grew up with. I haven’t heard an album this fresh and interesting since De La Soul’s “Three Feet High and Rising” an album that I give very high praises to. Standouts: Freedom, Remember His Name, Break, What’s Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity, Hey. It’s such a bummer that it took me twenty years after its release to hear it for the first time. I look forward to hearing more of this one. 3.5/5 (For my first listen) 5.0 for future potential.

Hip hop elegante con basi raffinate. Piacevolissimo all’ascolto

Nice production even if the motifs feel dated for a 02 album

Not my usual pick but I really enjoyed this! Sorry I don’t have my full notes 📝

Solid if unremarkable.

I'm not usually a rap fan, but there's a melodic quality to this album that I don't normally experience. I'm not attracted enough to go out and buy more, but am glad to have experienced this offering. The last track, "A Day At The Races" stood out for me.

kinda okay i guess

Pretty good hip hop from a band I never heard of.

pretty tight

It’s a good album but not my favorite genre. Good beats with a type of rapping I don’t connect with. Still some good songs though.

This really grabbed me. Musical and epic.

No conocía esta banda y no es el género de música que suelo escuchar pero me gustó mucho.

Yay at last a rap album I can get behind. They can sing as well as rhyme. The beats have rhythm. The samples are interesting and the lyrics are not unpleasant. Prob still a 3 though.

Fínt rapp, dillaði mér við flest lögin.

Not bad

Never heard of these guys before. I like it. It's like a slightly more modern Tribe Called Quest. Nice appearance from Big Daddy Kane. Love those flows.

Rap and hip hop. Not my vibe.

Good beats. Not really a bunch of forced rhymes. Lacking a bit of energy, though.

Definitely a coherent effort that is lyrically smart and makes a strong statement. The style is enjoyable and easy to appreciate. My main criticism is that most of the message is blunt and too straightforward. I think there is a bit more creativity/cleverness in Sum of Us and High Fidelity is strong, but overall, good, but a bit boring.

Good album, above average and I would rate it 3.5 but ultimately I don’t think it is good enough for a 4. It’s very coherent but other than a few songs I didn’t find several tracks to be very memorable, although none were bad.

I love Jurassic 5. And I love their albums. But this one sounds like the others, and so after a while I found it hard to focus too much on any specific track. The overall feel is great, but I do feel if you’ve heard on you’ve heard them all.

Hip hop

It’s an okay hip-hop album. It only features one song that doesn’t feel fillerish. Overall though it’s a decent listen.

Generally, this is a genre I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to, but I enjoyed it! Solid beats and very musically varied, I found myself grooving and moving. I would even consider listening to more.

Dette likte eg overaskende godt. 3/5. Noe litt kjedelig, men en del ganske bra.

Some fun beats and good vibes. Not my kind of hip hop, but nevertheless pretty good.

Decent hip-hop album, has resemblance to Wu-tang and Ghost face Killah. I am not particularly gripped by the album, but it has some decent cuts.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Thin line

It was Ok

I was busy with work so didn't listen super close but really liked it

Love the lyrics and rapping, but wish the background music was less monotonous.

Lots of excellent grooves and rhymes. A Day at the Races is AWESOME. The rest is nice but not terribly challenging. Once you start to notice the consistent monotonous swing that characterizes most of their lyrics in the other songs, it's hard to hear anything else including the semantic meanings!

Goed uit te houden, maar de kans dat dit ik dit ooit nog draai is nihil!

Dit vond ik eigenlijk best tof.

It's ok.

I actually didn't mind listening to this album. I did think going in, that it would be unbearable considering the runtime reaches almost an hour long. But the beats and flow of Jurassic 5 were able to keep my head bopping along. The fan interaction at the end of "If You Only Knew" was definitely an unexpected highlight, it really captured the essence of an Aussie fan - no matter what they're a fan of you can expect a similar reaction. Best: Freedom Worst: One of Them

alltaf gaman að kynnast nýju hip-hopi ! þrjár stjörnur

Old man rap that rewards multiple listens. yeah 3.25

Listened to on 2/8/22 3.4/5 Favorite songs: Sum of Us, What’s Golden Turns out I actually might like hip hop way more than I thought. I really enjoyed how the songs flowed into one another like a story yet we’re still all diverse. I would absolutely turn this on as background music or to run to if I theoretically ran

pretty good hip hop music

2022.01.28

This is good study music. I got extremely concentrated on any of my mundane tasks when I played this. Lots of humorous moments throughout. It's a "summer" record.

Good funky hip hop

A decent hip-hop LP, some interesting bars here and there but the arrangements don't do enough to push this album into memorable territory

Is it me, or is there a lot of hip hop in these 1001 albums? And why are all hip hop albums so long? Yeah, it's ok

Good sample usage, a few great tracks (Remember His Name, What's Golden for instance), and overall good rapping. Didn't love it but nothing wrong with it either. A nice middle of the road album for this site.

6/10. Great beats. Some great tracks - is ‘Thin Line’ the first ever song consciously written about the ‘friend zone?’ - but overall not an awful lot of light and shade. A little underwhelming in places.

Enjoyed but drifted off towards the end as all seemed a little samey. More familiar with Quality Control, which I love.

Better than The Jackson 5....well, fewer nonces anyway.

Básico, muy plano

A mix of good and bad.

Some tracks really hit hard but most are just good

Very boom-bap. Hip-hop hip-hop, real hip-hop

math rocky.

Hyvin mukavasti toimi taustalla ajaessa autoo ja pari kertaa pyörähti ympäri. Helppo kolmonen

What’s Golden and Thin Line stand out as iconic beats, but rest is pretty forgettable. Not bad. It’s fine.

I'm not much of a hip-hop fan but I enjoyed this. Really good grooves, definitely got my head bobbing. While I didn't play super close attention, seemed like interesting lyrical content.

Hip hop is not one of my preferred genres but I can appreciate this album for being a fun listen. The bass is slick and that really stood out for me.

Pretty cool lo fi beats.

All these guys have amazing flows. But unfortunatley it seems like half they time they don't really have much to say. The beats were passable, but not amazing (except for the last song where they actually use whirly tubes in music, that was delightful). Ultimately fun, but not anything pulling me back here.

Just outright boring beats. The flows were phenomenal though, if only they could've been over something else.

A fun listen, funky and tasteful!

Not waht I usually listen to, but really good.

Great beats, clever vocals and it's refreshing to hear it not just being about being cooler than everyone else in the game. No particular tracks stood out though.

It's cool, but not super my vibe. I don't care for the more old school rap stuff. It's fun but just not for me in general.

Not their best album by quite a way, but still decent

Ok oldish school rap. Liked, but no big love.

Really cool underground rap from early 2000's. A few standouts, but a lot of just solid material from the era that blends together.

Kinda comes across as a semi throwback to earlier hip hop than it's own era. Very listenable but nothing really stuck out to me.

A few good tracks here, but overall a little underwhelming for me. Some of it is completely skippable, but a few are some nice 90s/early 2000s hip-hop.

Tracks review: (/5) 1 - 4 2 - 3 3 - 4.2 4 - 3.8 5 - 2.5 6 - 3 7 - 3 8 - 3.5 9 - 3.8 10 - 2 11 - 2 12 - 2 13 - 1 14 - 2 15 - 2.5 16 - 3 17 - 2.5 Album average: 2.81/5 Notes: Repetitive at second half

This album being released in 2002 still clearly has a lot of early 90's hip hop influential. My first listen tends to focus more on rhythm and lyrical flow, and based off that I hear similarities to Hyroglphyics, with less lyrical depth. Most if not all of the drum tracks sound like they're physical drums which is a really nice fresh sound when most tracks these days are 808s and other synthetic percussion. It is disappointing when a song bops, and suddenly "gay" is used in a derogatory way. It's a theme that is prevelant in a handful of hip-hop groups/artists, its walking on eggshells in the times of "cancel" culture. But, if you don't like something you can choose to not listen. 7.0/10

It was pleasant enough but probably won’t listen again.

Old school hip hop. Not 100% my vibe but definitely a good album

Hip hop isn’t really my music taste but I am enjoying some of the songs.

Was looking forward to listenng to this album, I loved the single Whats Golden back in the day. But was a little dissapointed with the rest of the album. I would listen to it again though.

Decent rap music. 7.8/10

kidna boring and average

Pretty fun to listen to. They brought in some solid features and talk on some serious subjects. They got some fire verses on this album too. Favorite song: Sum Of Us

Groovy samples. The rap doesn't do much for me, but it is listenable.

Hip Hop oldskul, muy escuchable. Buenas bases y un par de temas llamativos

chill za pustanje u pozadini kad je drustvo tu

Ook hip hop. Leuk om te luisteren maar niet heel bijzonder

Hip hop is never a bad choice, but for some reason this doesn’t really do it for me. Decent sound, solid beats, but I feel it lacks some soul...

I hadn't listened to this for years. It hasn't really dated as it was already pretty retro when it came out

Great album for setting a vibe but nothing jumped out at me, the tunes seemed to run together. Nice but nothing exceptional.

Fun group rap. Was kinda the same thing throughout the album.

Nice beats, good raps

Ein wenig wie bei Common kann ich es nicht gut einordnen. Die Schlagzeug/Rhythmusparts sind super

Easy-listening, chill. Not my kind of music but I like it better than modern rap.

Nicht schlecht, nervt mich auch überhaupt nicht, ist bloß auch überhaupt nix besonderes. Gaanz schlechte 3.

Favorites: Freedom: Good beat. Effective use of sound bites. - 1 If You Only Knew: love the flute in this beat. Reminds me of the boondocks theme. - 1 Break: I enjoy everything after the intro. Lots of good flow switches - 0.75 A Day At the Races: average - 0.5 Remember His Name: good transitions between rappers. Solid flow throughout. - 0.75 What’s Golden: Fucking awesome beat - 1.25 Thin Line: Subject-matter hits close to home. Solid hook - 1 After School Special: meh - 0.5 High Fidelity: unique sounds in the best - 0.75 Sum of Us: great flow and switches - 0.75 One of Them: Beat is kind of tedious - 0.25 Hey: meh - 0.5 I am Somebody: good beat - 0.75 Acetate Prophets: pointless for a rap album - 0.25 If this album wasn’t so bloated it could’ve been a lot better. Total - 9/14

Basically became background music

It is fine, but this isn't my ideal type of hip hop. It is also long, and I got tired of it after 45 minutes or so.

2/22 Some dope backpack raps. Standout Tracks: Freedom, Remember His Name, After School Special, Sum Of Us, One Of Them

This is a lot better than expected for 2000s rap. Sounds pretty old school most of the time. Not sure why everyone gushes over shit like Kanye West and Jay Z when this exists. 3/5.

Not really my type of music. Most likely won't listen to again. 2/5 stars.

Not for me 2/5

Alright, I give up. Every review I write I always try to make it as insightful as possible, and I always say whatcI can about my thoughts on the album, the artist as a whole, and any other relevant context I know about the album. But I am officially done trying to make my reviews interesting for albums like this. Half the albums on this list are some generic crap that nobody needs to care about, and while it has made for an interesting challenge to try and give an in depth review of each one, I truly have nothing left. You want to know what I think of this album? Go and read literally any of my other reviews of others just as boring as this. I've said everything there is to be said about all the music that's this uninteresting, and to be honest I'm amazed I've made it this far giving so many full reviews of albums with absolutely zero substance.

I’m thinking yes! Jurassic 5!!!! Then I see it’s from 2001….ok Then I see that they aren’t from the 70’s like I thought. Ok This has that overly political sound to it. Sort of stuck in the 80’s sound. See Del the Funky Homosapien or Arrested Development, though they were most likely mid to late 90’s. In an entertainment sense, this type of sound is lacking for me. The beats are serviceable but lyrically and delivery wise it’s very stale. If I remember one song from this album I’d be surprised. Annnnddd I don’t.

Some great tunes, some repetitive and boring and often overlong.

Can you rap? Of course they can

Menee sinne huonompaan räppikastiin jossa ei oo mitään spessua.

Like the kidzbop version of rap

I'd heard of the band but not listened to any. I like some hip hop a lot, but a lot puts me off, if the music is shallow and/or the tone is off. The tone here is mostly not off-putting (I get that they were alt hip hop), but the music rarely grabbed me, and little of the words stuck out enough to seize my attention. One slender positive exception, when they dropped in a recording of some dialogue with an Australian, hearing my local accent was amusing. One negative exception, I'd read that One Of Them was bad, so I focused on its lyrics, it's a non-alt diss track against unnamed MCs, questioning their masculinity and supposed toughness, I find it tedious and off. So it's a mix of okay and bad, I'll call it Pretty Poor, 3/10.

Not for me

Couple of tracks i really liked including the Collab with nelly furtado but on the whole, not for me

Whatever this is trying to be, someone else has done it better.

I think this album probably suited its time, but hearing it for the first time now, I couldn’t appreciate it.

Ho Hum - another mindless rap album, with not focus or flair.

Não é meu tipo de música.

I think I might have outgrown Jurassic 5 a bit I dunno man I was never into them the way I was Blackalicious or De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest

Почему этот реп сюда попал? Не подумайте, это не прям плохо, просто это никак.

On the surface I might give it a 3, not great but not bad. But when I compare the other early 2000's offerings in this genre it's a 2.

What’s Golden is a great pump up track. Reminds me of my college roommate Crow. Most of these tracks seems like they would fit well on a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.

This was generally a fine rap album that I was vibing too, but then it took a weird swing with One of Them and its homophobia and fear of metro guys (remember when we had to coin a term to describe straight men who cared about their appearance? The early '00s were a weird time). And that just kind of pushed a perfectly serviceable album into the bad territory.

Weird homophobia randomly in One of Them. I’m not here for that. If I could have thrown the lyrics to that song out and just rated this based on the beats, it’d probably be a 4 or a 5.

I like the concept of it but it feels stale by now.

i was dreading listening to this one, but it wasnt that bad. it' wont make my rotation, but better than expected.

The more I listen to this 90s and early 2000s hip hop the more it starts to sound the same. But I'm sure people who mostly listen to that stuff thinks 70s rock all sounds the same. Nothing special here, but it did have fun beats and good rhyming.

Not a fan, but no repulsed

Well, I’ve listened to worse… see Leonard Cohen!

Poor man's a tribe called quest

Eh not really my thing but cool samples

jdbdjdh

It's a hip hop album. And a pretty long one at that. Overall, I'm not a fan. It may not be quite as laden with misogyny, violence, and homophobia as some of the others, but it's still the same thing over and over. I mean, of course those elements are there if you want them, just not front and center like most of the hip hop albums on this list. For the most part. But the lyrics are dumb and simple. The music is unoriginal and repetitive. The whole genre is just monotonous and irritating and this album is the same as all the rest. Though there were points where I was digging the grooves. I particularly liked the tracks where elements of funk/jazz were incorporated. But again, I was mostly not inspired by anything here. It may not be quite as bad as others but still, not for me.

Not for me.

2.25 - not sure why I just couldn't get into this album. There's obviously some HOT TRACKS here though, and I will acknowledge that there is a place and time for this album, I just couldnt seem to find myself in it today.

A two for me, but a bonus mention for the fact A Day At the Races gave me peak THUG Nostalgia Check it, man! Muska is actually coming to this dump for a skate demo. Get dressed and let's go! Home sweet home. What a dump... at least it has some killer spots. The old pool down by the highschool, scab land, the drainage ditch on the south side of town, and Elm Street, our own little strip of paradise. Complete with drug dealers who hate skateboarders.

repniški repnige repniški repniguju. sve u svemu dozlaboga dosadnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I liked After School Special

Starts strong but tapers off pretty quickly. Also -1 for the homophobia in One Of Them.

This is pretty ordinary. Nothing special about the beats. Some moments of decent flow - but not many.

Not my groove but not bad

27/03/2026 1. this is - oo like the bass... 2. freedom - like the tambourine... nice, but a bit repetitive. 3. if you only knew - like the intro. lyrics are a bit cringe? just a bit surface level. maybe a bit slow? not sure why i'm not feeling it :/ flute is nice though. *4. break - loving the drums immediately. liking the beat a looot more in this one! love the scratching near the end!! reaallly nice :) *5. react - loove the bass. bit groovier... sampling and scratches are lovely! *6. a day at the races - bass is great! guitar is real nice aswell! looove the faster rapping in this one! maybe going on a bit long... stokely carmichael! 7. remember his name - nice but nothing really jumps out... *8. what's golden - liking this immediately! loove the synth(?) and the horns!! great! 9. thin line - loove the strings at the start.. loooove the sampling!! feels like it's going on abiiit long though... 10. after school special - nice :) like the ending. 11. high fidelity - like the horns. kindof just washes over a bit though. bit monotonous. love the scratching though. *12. sum of us - liking this one more... reaaally nice :) *13. ddt - great!!! 14. one of them - very much dragging on at this point... not bad just getting too long. *15. hey - loooooving the start!! dragged on a bit, just became a bit forgettable. 16. i am somebody - fine! *17. acetate prophets - sounds more interesting.... not my favourite, but would rather have an album of more experimental tracks like this instead of the same sounding tracks all over again for one hour. five minutes in and it's grown on me! some of the songs were really nice, but a lot of it just kindof washed over me? it wasn't bad, but especially with 17 tracks it got a bit repetitive and the beat stayed quite similar on a looot of the tracks. liked the deeper voiced rapper a lot! public enemy does a similar thing but feels a lot more energetic and abrasive - which i just enjoy listening more to! ddt was a really phenomenal change-up without any beat or instruments!!

This was ok. For me, there was nothing particularly special about it. Curious as to why it was in the list, if I’m honest. Good for what it is, but instantly forgettable for the most part. My favourite tune was What’s Golden. I’ll probably never revisit it though.

No me gusta el hip hop

I love that it has an introduction

impressed by pace of vocals but not my type of music

Better than expected

Didn't grab me at all. Background music

boh non mi è rimasto

what's golden is on this one, but idk. 2

- kinda blah and corny

I like Quality Control a lot more. 2/5

this aint my type of music

Как-то реп, не моё, больше 1 раза альбом даже не захотелось слушать

Not my genre.

Not all 1089 albums can be winners

It was good but too long. Nothing really grabbed me and was hard to stay engaged.

Hip hop og me duele un poco la cabeza

Before: Never heard of this album or artist. I'm thinking some form of rap or similar based on the album cover and explicit lyrics warning. During: The first few minutes are not bad, hip hop? Discogs calls it Conscious Hip Hop, while Wikipedia calls if Alternative Hip Hop. Now up, "If You Only Knew", I do like this some. Maybe I'll find a contender for my favorites of 2002 list; let's see what else they got. "Break" is good. "React" is good. By the time we get to the 6th track though, "A Day at The Races" I'm getting tired of the music. Unfortunately Spotify does not know the lyrics for a lot the numbers on this album. Speaking of lyrics, one problem I have with rap, hip hop, and similar genres is that so much of it so self referential, it gets a little tiresome. I might like the music but the lyrics drag it down. After : It's a long album. Definately got tiresome by the end. So much so that I would rather not listen, than listen to it, which edges it just below a 3. I decided to give it another try but by the time we get to number 6 out of 15, "A Day At The Races", I'm done. I definately don't want to listen to the whole album again and overall I'd rather not listen to it, than listen to it, but I don't hate it. That sits it squarely in 2 territory, even though I did like a couple of tracks a little. There's nothing on this album that I love but my 2002 list if a little sparse at 47 tracks and my goal is between 50 - 100 so I skim through the album one more time to see if there is anything I can grab. I decide to add "React" to the 48th spot, just after Clinic's, "For The Wars", and "Thin Line", just below that. Naw, scratch "Thin Line", it's not that good, so I remove it. It's catchy but a bit too repetitive and long.

I never heard this band and I'm not a fan of hip hop. Too repetitive. Overall an OK album.

Boring

Yep, it's a hip hop album. And a pretty long one at that. I'm not a fan. It may not be quite as bad as others but still, not for me, thank you. 1.75/5

Its just not my music preference.

interessantes Neuland für mich

I enjoyed listening to this. Totally not offended. But I don’t think that this is essential listening yet. I’m finding the backing tracks to be kinda boring and one dimensional. The scratching is cool though! Likely will need to listen to this many times to understand fully because of all the words.

This feels like hip-hop for people who don’t like hip-hop. It’s very smooth, very polished and very forgettable. It reminds me a lot of Me Phi Me but with more bite. The album is very mid 90s, and swings along for at least 20 unnecessary minutes.

Definitely has its moments, but like most hip-hop albums devolves into extremely similar sounding songs occupying the non-singles.

Not the worst and certainly not the best hip hop I’ve had to listen to. It was long. I did like the song Thin Line though

It is hiphop, but I give +1 star for the use of some nice samples

I think I prefer rock over rap Even though I would love to say I love rap....I don't think I do.

sorpresivamente no me gustó, le tenia mas fe

Not reale my vibe. I get The Vision but it's Not really my Type of music...

I really just don't think this kinda thing is for me. I've heard 17 track albums that are about an hour that I've liked more (ie. Blonde by Frank Ocean or DS2 by Future), and this just struggled to justify the length. It also got weirdly homophobic in the middle? which I get rap does sometimes but it just felt kinda weird. Favorites: Freedom, If You Only Knew, A Day at the Races

I didn't really like this as much. It just wasn't as strong with its hooks if that makes sense. It was fine tho. Acutal Rating...2.5 Liked Songs: "If You Only Knew" , "Break" , "What's Golden" , "Thin Line" , "High Fidelity" , "Sum Of Us" , "I Am Somebody"

I was looking forward to this, since I've had quite a few enjoyable hip-hop albums recently, and while I didn't know about these guys, one of my friends was a big fan. I was very underwhelmed. There are a few songs with good beats, but the lyrics are pretty tame and the bests are mostly forgettable. The first song says something about not being a corny collective, but that's exactly what I thought they were at a number of times while listening.

Pu-pu-pu. Well, first of all, it’s a cool band name. The first third of the album is good: there are some interesting melodies. But the rest is boring, ordinary hip-hop. I don't understand why this album is on the list to listen to.

A hip hop album that seemed competent and fun, but didn’t move me much.

Not too bad. But for the most part, I am not a big fan of rap and/or hip-hop.

Not a fan

Quality stuff. Just not my bag

Same same same

I thought this might be in with a chance at a 3, but too many annoying rubbing and squeaking sounds, as usual. 2.5

hip hop for white people

Decent listen that has the same problem of many Hip Hop albums which is monotonous, repetitive looped samples. The absolute worst example is the Ennio Morricone sample in 'Remember His Name' that was so irritating I couldn't finish the track. There's some interesting and creative sounds added, but the constant looping of the same sample over and over again just doesn't do it for me. The intent and fact it is a staple of the genre doesn't make it interesting to listen to. Top Track = Freedom

this was fun, but nothing really jumped out at me.

I tried but it's just very boring a few good songs though

This rap album was fine. Decent production and great rhythms, would relisten again.

HipHop not really my Taste

Don't like hip hop

Fine. I guess I'm not that into hip-hop. 2.5/3

They’re talented, but this just isn’t my preferred rap style. That jazzy, super aware stuff comes across as so corny. J5 are for someone, just not so much for me.

Considering I am not a rap fan and likely never will be, I actually found parts of this quite bearable. Felt more musical than the other rap this has thrown at me, I think having so many different people work on it led to some pretty varied, but decent results. Wouldn't listen again, but I can't bash it much.

Not interesting at all. No builds. Some riffs or beats are cool but no changes just drives me to boredom.

Started OK. Didn’t get better. Got worse. Kept getting worse. Bloodless pastiche.

Not my cup of tea, but a pretty solid listen 2.5/5

corp music....

Another Hip-Hop album! I liked the opening track, "This Is", because it was Dub Reggae rather than Hip-Hop, but then it just became another fairly boring Hip-Hop album.

Not my things

Blackalicius - Blazing Arrows è stesso genere, stesso anno e molto meglio. All’inizio pensavo fosse anni 80 perché è molto soul. Meh

58/1001 :: Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 4 Fav Tracks: A Day At The Races, What’s Golden Listen before you die: No An interesting conscious rap album. 6 dudes delivering flows that pretty much sound straight out of the 80s. I thought overall the music was well cool. Funky, layered and fit the style of positive hip hop they were delivering. All that said, there's a couple of cool songs but this brand of hip hop is not really what I’m into. I hate to say it but it’s too nice. It feels like there’s no edge to it. So I’m moving on...

Some decent enough beats but overall, just boring.

This doesn't feel like it stands out compared to other albums at this time. If anything, it feels like a step back.

It was boring. If you’re going to rap about serious subjects, you really need a great hype man to make the listener pay attention. This album doesn’t have one.

Certainement super mais malheureusement pas complètement mon genre. J'écoute avec trop de distance pour être capable de bien juger.

It's becoming abundantly clear that rap just isn't my thing.

Listening to Jurassic 5 in the wake of the B-52’s is an instructive exercise in restraint. Both bands shy away from elaborate harmonic development, relying instead on the voices to structure and propel the music. But whereas the B-52’s luxuriate in contrast and theatricality, Jurassic 5 remain almost painfully cohesive - a quartet of baritones moving in lockstep, polite to a fault. Fred Schneider’s bark, Kate Pierson’s swoops, Cindy Wilson’s piercing clarity - these are voices that not only delineate sections but give the songs their personality. Jurassic 5, in comparison, offer a kind of tonal democracy.Of course, this is the genre’s insistence: words matter, flow matters. Yet the words here pass by in such thickly clustered knots that meaning evaporates - syllables blur into rhythm, rhythm into texture, texture into a monochrome droning. It is not so much verbal dexterity as aural wallpaper. Contrast this with the easy cartoonism of the B-52’s: Rock Lobster! is ridiculous, yes, but it is intelligible. It sticks.N.W.A., at least, understood the theatre of contrast. Eazy-E’s squeak played against Ice Cube’s growl - a deliberate mismatch that threw sparks. Jurassic 5 decline the opportunity. They present not a cast of characters but a committee of clones. Socially conscious rap, Jurassic 5 prefer consensus, and consensus, for all its merits, can feel stifling.Even Kool Keith’s appearance on DDT is only distinguishable as a feature rather than another mid-range Jurassic 5er - a detail likely to be missed without specialist knowledge or access to the liner notes. However, the record comes alive when there is high contrast: the sections of Acetate Prophets and the cut-ups of high-voiced children provide texture and surprise. Most effective is Nelly Furtado. Her mere appearance stands out among the other voices, creating male/female contrast, sung/spoken contrast, without diminishing the genre’s focus on rhythm. Her singing against their rapping produces the most complex polyrhythms on the record. Here, at last, the album glimpses tension, colour, a kind of internal drama it rarely sustains elsewhere.Power in Numbers is meticulous and undeniably disciplined - neatly crafted by Cut Chemist. But there is a cost: in its admirable politeness, the record occasionally forfeits the thrill of unpredictability, the spark of mischief that makes music feel alive rather than respectable. 2 ‘Hot as you'd keep a furnace We kept it earnest Poems puncture your epidermis’ (After School Special) I was typing the name of this band into the search bar on my streaming app to cue this slop for a second listen when the app suggested ‘Jurassic Park - John Williams’. Naturally I listened to that instead of kidding myself that there were deeper layers of Jurassic 5’s album ready to reveal themselves to me. To be honest it isn’t John Williams‘ best - much of it is cluttered and cloying; especially when the choir aaaahhhs along in the main theme. The incidental stuff is gruel. What about those themes though? Unforgettable tunes. 1.5/5

There are moments here and there that interest me, but not ever a full song worth

God save me from Hip Hop! Please, no more...

Average hip hop. Not bad, not anything special though.

Some intriguing rhythms/sounds, but rap just sounds so monotonous to me.

Ok, but nothing special

Not my thing

Chill, kind of interesting, but not my style

I like some of the beats and it has a fun Tribe feel, but it’s a bit repetitive after a while and the instrumentation didn’t grab me enough. I don't really see how it made the 1000 albums list.

Not for me- didn’t hate it whilst listening but I don’t think I can fully enjoy it

Not really my jam. Wasn't terrible though. 2/5

Chill vibes

Never heard of Jurassic 5 and when it popped up I confused them with Maroon 5 and expected some boy-band pap. When I realised it was hip-hop I was even more disappointed. However, this does have some good melodies. ...And ear worms. For a while I was singing to myself "You one of them niggas". But of course I can't because I'm an old white guy and if I was to be caught singing that to myself in public I'd either get my head kicked in or at the very least some disgusted looks. And there's where the problem lies with hip-hop that uses this lyric; it's inaccessible and un-inclusive. I'm sure a lot of people can recall a young girl being brought up on stage at a festival and invited to sing along with Kendrick Lamar to one of his songs, and then when she does she's immediately shut down for singing the words that Lamar had written. Because she was white. How inclusive is that? Anyway. I liked some of this album. The language was only used in some songs so I'm going to give it a 2

Rap is not my thing. Loved the bass though on title track

Didn’t mind this, but it really felt like they wanted to be Arrested Development.

Cool sound, pretty unique, not super memorable though.

I feel like I keep writing the same thing for these albums -- not my cup of tea, but fine

Not my thing. The dude with the deep voice always sounds like he’s going to say “rubber baby buggy bumpers.”

Tap has to special for me to stick out. It’s not bad but not my style.

I wasn't too impressed w/ this album to be honest.

Rap, slightly softer than gangsta rap but nothing that grabbed my attention as being stunningly different.

The production is good. This is evidenced by how good Big Daddy Kane sounds on the song he's featured on. The problem is that the back and forth "old school" rap style gimmick wears thin when the rappers don't really have anything to say. I've heard Charli 2na on other stuff and have liked him albeit in limited doses. Neither he nor the other guys have "it" at least inasmuch to make a better more interesting album.

ממש לא הז'אנר שלי... מעבר לזה האלבום היה קצת משעמם היו כמה ביטים טובים אבל לא משהו רציני לא היה לי שיר שהיה יוצא דופן

Unaufgeregter Hip-hop. Wenn nur dieses Flötengedudel nicht wäre.

Ikke min type musikk. Noen ok beats, men liker ikke klipp og lim fra andres låter. Svak 2’ee.

Cool cover 1. Into. 2. Cool opening. Chill. About the lyrics more than music. Political. 3. Music is jazzy. With a flute. Lyrics can be a bit corny re "don't mess with me," "I hella rap bruh." Ok. Just not original. 4. Cool drum opening. Another "we cool" but it's good and a bop. Nice. 5. Into. 6. Funky. Master blaster. They said that. But s head bopper. 7. Also good bop. By now though the promise of the album title and the first song re political issues is so far lacking. They are talking more about themselves. 8. Nother shot caller song. It's good but .. 9. Ridiculous song. Harry met Sally? 10. Same shit. Not a bopper. Don't put your kids on the album. J/k. It was cute but the song was meh. 11. Funky but sounds same. The chorus lifts it up some. Otherwise, doesn't stand out. 12. Finally political. But otherwise lyrics aren't too creative. An ok song. 13. Spoken poetry. Cappin'. Ok. 14. Linda, you a birch. Wherever. 15. Don't care. 16. Doesn't stand out. 17. Funky best. Instrumental for the most part. OVERALL: An ok album. Some fun tracks but not for me.

Cant get on board with this. Not my style of music. It seems far supirior to recent R&B / hip hob music we have recently had to endure on here. Least it wasnt ramming down our throats annoying themes in the lyrics. Wasnt just about balls and feminism which was unusual :)

Reeks of "I'm tryna philosophize"

Pretty good if not a bit uneventful

- Hip Hop is not a genre of music I listen to very often, wasn't super stoked to see this on the list honestly. - As expected I didn't love it, but it wasn't that bad. Was easy enough to listen to while working on coding. Some songs were a little catchy, like What's Golden.

This was a very dry and boring album to me. This album doesn't do anything wrong or blatantly bad, but I can't away with very little after multiple listens Not a lot of memorable verses and a majority of songs are the same way. Comparing Kool Keith's odd and twisting verse on DDT to almost everything else feels like night and day in terms of entertainment Jurassic 5 weren't the only group rapping about the state of rap and it's issues, but I feel like it'd been done much better before this album and by other conscious contemporaries in the early 00s

I mean, it wasn't awful, but it's not something that I would deem essential listening. It certainly didn't feel essential while I was listening to it. Key tracks: Thin Line

Feels a little outdated. A hippy, a hoppy, a dippy zippy, doppy

Good beats, wack lyrics. It's like erkle rapping over dilla.

Cool sound but as many hip hop records, it overstays its welcome

This album has lost most of its charm over the last 23 years.

Not for me

Did not enjoy.

As an absolute non-listener to rap or hip-hop I found this album not as terrible as many others, which have been on this list. It did not hurt to listen to it but it was really no fun.

325/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Slitsomt

didnt enjoy this one too much, could’ve listened more active tho

Not bad. The beats are nice but the flows are pretty boring

This is Carlos hacky sack music, but I think rap that sounds like this is wack (2)

Inte min bag. Kompetent men tråkigt. Tvåa
