Reviews (page 10 of 12)

adok majd még neki esélyt, mert nem volt rossz, de nem nagyon éreztem ezt most

Definitely has a 90's feel to the flow, but with a little different beats. Really fun, I like the little accents in the beats that are like keys/flute type of pitch, although I will say the drum machine is pretty samey throughout. Overall, I could listen to this anytime it's pretty great

Seems cool, didn't listen to the whole thing but impressive at times

Fun but a bit too long overall, also some of the rapping aged pretty awkwardly but most of it and the production are generally pretty fun. Wish it was more conscise more than anything.

Still sounds fresh

I enjoyed this more than I was expecting to but probably 3-4 songs too long

I remember when Jurassic 5's previous album, Quality Control, came out. I was very impressed. And pleased -- this is more like the rap I like. More like old school (Run DMC, LL Cool J) and not so much like the stuff Jay Z and most modern rappers do. I would give that album 4 stars. This one isn't as good, in my opinion. Still good, but not as good. But still, 3.5 stars, though I'm rounding down since 4 stars should be uncommon.

I appreciated the style and flow of the tracks, 90s hip hop has something real that just can't be replicated today. I also really like this period of anti-gangster rap that doesn't rely on mysogeny and violence. Unfortunately most of the songs sounded way too similar, with similar themes and at times similar lyrics, after an hour it all just blended together.

Gear: Aür Audio Aurora Artwork: 🖐️✌️✊ Produktion: 👌🤌👍 Musik: 🤙👏🫳 Wertung: ✌️✌️✌️/5

Hip hop is not generally my thing but this was good. I've seen other reviews complaining about the similar sounds and beats, and while true to some extent, it is far above the 1 star ratings they give it.

Best prima hiphop. Maar verder niet heel bijzonder.

pretty good. It's kind of a soulful, "conscious rap" type flow. The beats are more interesting than the lyrics, which are kind of standard, I think, but there's a lot of real creativity in the music.

Prototypical early 2000s alt-rap Highlights: "Freedom" (boom bap music, MCs have interesting voices), "If You Only Knew" (jazzy flute), "A Day at the Races" (late 80s/early 90s flow, Big Daddy Kane guests), "High Fidelity" (uptempo quirky music) Notable: "One of Them" (trying on gangsta...it's an awkward fit)

Meh…I like acts like Mos Def and Lauren Hill and Nas more if I’m listening to this genre. The backing tracks including flute were beautiful though

Nice sound very mellow! Hadn’t heard of this band before so nice to pick up a new band- album a bit long

When they say conscious rap this is what will come into my head forever. Kinda sick. Kinda not aging well. They said don’t call us corny but….

Clearly well made, but not of interest to me - a kind of easy listening jazz come rap

More of a Jurassic 3 for me

This was a pleasant surprise for me.

Kinda corny

3.5 pretty good, cool jazzy beats

cohesive but distinctive, refreshing. vibes music favorite track: A Day At The Races

love J5 , and this is a quite good one, with a comforting old school feel . Their first and best album is awesome , so i’ll dig out that record! 3.5

I remember when these guys came out, it’s mid-level hip-hop - but far better than most other rap of the time.

We like this one quite a bit

Enjoyed listening but didn’t really grab me. Not bothered about hearing again.

Not my genre but liked it despite myself!

So I’m realizing that hip hop just isn’t really my thing. I’ve heard some excellent hip hop that I really enjoyed but, as a whole, it’s not really connecting. This is another album where I’d be hard pressed to say that it’s bad or even short of excellent. But it’s also not for me. Then again, if any of these songs came on spontaneously, I wouldn’t complain either.

Softer rap than I expected but I liked the musical aspects of the presentation.

Very quiet album to listen to in the background. Some jazzy instrumentals that relax you a lot and something that surprised me were the good lyrics. You will find that it is a very well written project despite having 14 verses per track. What is my problem with the album? I feel like it's a straight line, it has its little curves both up and down but, it stays straight for most of the album and doesn't surprise you at any point. I'm not saying it's bad to be consistent, but this project is very monotonous.

This is my kind of hip hop. Creative, artistic, and not trying to be super hard or narcissistic. Good vibes all around.

Enjoyable early 2000's hip hop with a relaxed vibe. Good in the background but no songs stood out particularly.

Empieza muy bien y hacia la mitad del disco uno encuentra al menos dos temas que suben el promedio. Bangers, como dicen los gringos. Al poco rato termina aburriéndome, pero creo que ese es mi propio problema con el rap

I've listened to Quality Control plenty, and solo stuff from members of this group, but don't think I've heard this album at all. Starting strong with a funky beat and Chali 2na's unmistakable deep voice in "Freedom". Dope flutes Nelly Furtado appears "One of Them" feels out of place on here. Too aggressive. First one I've wanted to skip. Album is losing some steam in the second half Closing it out with a fun classic 90s DJ instrumental track - love it. A fun album I would listen to again. 3.5/5 but prob rounding down

Expected to hate this but I really liked the backing. Very laid back and funky. The rapping is ok as well.

I really really like this kind of jazz influenced hip-hop. Smarter, more positive, more diverse themes, still has a lot of toughness and rage. Standouts: Thin Line, DDT, One Of Them, Acetate Prophets - especially Acetate Prophets.

Jeg forventede lidt mere, fordi jeg ofte har hørt Jurassic 5 nævnt i samme åndedrag som De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest osv., men synes ikke at rapperne her var vildt memorable. Vildt gode beats dog. Et af de bedste covers vi har haft

I've not heard of Jurassic 5 until now. It's a good hip hop album altogether. “Thin Line”, featuring Nelly Furtado, is the best track.

Was new to me and I was pleasantly surprised (I made it through the entire album). Really enjoyed “Thin Line” with Nelly Furtado vocals.

Pretty funky. Not hugely my thing

This is a real old-head hip-hop album. I listened to J5 a bunch in high school because one of my friends liked them a lot. I listened to this album twice, but the first time I was barely listening in a car. The album is straight bars with some pretty simple but funky production. If you like hot lyrics, this is a great album. I like a little more musical production, so this didn't quite pull me in that much. It's good, but runs a little long. No complaints and definitely enjoy it. 6/10

Du bon hip-hop, mais à part LE gros single de l'album, j'ai déjà de la misère à me rappeler comment ça sonnait. C'était bon, mais pas particulièrement mémorable, unique ou groundbreaking. 7/10

Lacked some diversity to be better.

Buen hip-hop.

i dont usually listen to rap but this is groovy i like it all of the songs kinda blend together but they are good i love the beats my favorite song: if you only knew

this is has me bopping my head back and forth like that vibing cat

I enjoyed it! Good Songs Good Lyrics but the Jurassic 5 has 6 Members... but a good album will listen to few songs for sure in the future

nice album, pretty chill, but not my style of rap 3/5

Favourite Song: Freedom

I have listened to Jurassic 5 a little bit but probably never a whole album. I liked the album in general but it really didn't have any real standout songs, beats or rhymes. Probably won't be returning to it over other similar(ish) artists --

I've heard this album categorized as alternative hip-hop several times. No chance, it's positively retro. And pining for an era much better left in the 80s.

A decent album, even for someone who's not a fan of a genre like me. I did enjoy the first half a lot more, though; I found it to be a lot more interesting musically than the back of the album. 3.5 stars

Liked the beats on this, doesn't hit that next level of hip-hop IMO, but still think it's fine. Really can't get into Chali 2na's voice - you know the one - just sounds like he's putting on a character.

bit mid

Pretty neat

perfectly fine

Not bad, not great.

Not a genre (hip hop / rap) I know too much about and I generally don’t find it interesting or alluring and even sometimes find it irritating. This is very listenable and has some good production and inventive use of samples. It’s in no way irritating or jarring. It could be hip hop 101 for all I know though. 3.5/5

3.5. This is more my style of hip hop

Really good, just a bit too long.

Not really into it

Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.

As someone who does not enjoy hip hop, this was surprisingly good.

Pretty okish

Power in Numbers by Jurassic 5 delivers a blend of classic hip-hop and innovative sounds but falls short of making a strong impact. The group's synergy is evident, yet the album feels predictable and lacks depth. The individual styles of each member are present, but their voices don't always mesh cohesively. While the balance between insightful lyrics and entertaining beats is maintained, neither stands out significantly. Interludes and skits add some personality but don't enhance the overall experience. Despite its well-crafted production, Power in Numbers leaves the listener wanting more in terms of originality and impact. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Thin Line

J5 are that perfect fusion of intelligence and hip hop. Probably prefer Quality Control but this is still a high 3

Honestly not a bad album, I quite liked how it flowed. However, it feels like a pretty average product of its time.

Could be made by AI...By which In mean, you know exactly what to expect from J5. Good but...same old J5.

Surprisingly not bad. Didn’t know what to expect though going in!

I enjoyed this a lot. The album was a very good classic rap album. However, it loses a couple points for me because of the time it was released. At this point in time, rap was doing so much more than just classic beats and mediocre flows with great poetry. If this was released 10 years earlier it’s a 4 or maybe 5

very interesting rap album but didn’t blow me away to make me super wanna revisit

I am somewhat familiar with Jurassic 5 but they fell off my radar in the late 2000's. I think a lot of people forget about them so this was a fun revisit. I have "Thin Line" in a playlist so it comes up sometimes and is always good. "If you Only Knew" and a couple other good ones on this album but not sure I'd put it on. Chali 2na's voice brought me back and I like their sound overall. Good use of breakbeats and incorporation of other instruments but some of it sounds too 90's for me. Still pretty enjoyable and a solid listen.

It's a decent hip hop album. Pretty basic beats and some good flow from the team. I dug A Day At The Races and a couple others. Decent listen but not anything that's going to stick with me though I'm way more likely to throw something like this on over many other forms of rap/hip-hop I've heard. 2.81 stars

Hip hop for people who don’t like hip hop. It’s a nice sound, pleasant, musical, and lyrically there isn’t any drugging or misogyny or crime. And yet, well, it’s just not particularly biting, is it? It calls to mind the optimistic days of the first W administration, when all of us good-hearted folks knew truth from hypocrisy, and thought this feeling would last…only to learn that hypocrisy will usually win out, as it’s much more entertaining.

Wirklich recht melodisches Hip-Hop-Album.

Groovy rhythm and the tracks are well produced. Somewhat enjoyable, but a little generic and too long.

Enjoyed

Some good tunes

Enjoyed more than I expected. Headbobbing beats and smart lines.

Oh yeah...I remember them! Crisp smooth and clean beats with a propulsive high energy feel. The delivery is similar: precise and clever with some quick turns of phrase and conscious content. Continuing the Native Tongues/backpack rap tradition, but it's kind of generic sounding across the board and nothing strikes especially powerfully - but maybe it's another one that'll need a few relistens to really sink in...

Really liked it, especially the song with Nelly

Solid. 3.3

I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. It is not just another hip-hop DJ sampling, rapping, and mixing as usual, but some quite excellent stuff here, both musically and lyrically.

Above average rapping, in my opinion. I didn't mind it for the most part.

Amazing rapping skills and versatility. Low key good rapping not the usual themes they were using back then. A change in the rap scene but never made it big unfortunately.

3.5 stars

Out of the hip-hop/rap albums I have heard on this project so far, this was my favorite. Catchy beats, endless rhymes, and not every song is about women and money.

Solid...but not nearly as great as ATCQ and other similar sounding rap groups. 3/5

It’s fine. Better than I thought it would be.

I always semi forget about them but I always enjoy their albums. Solid boom bap with some good storytelling songs (3.5/5)

Better than I expected, but not really my style. The rap and hiphop is quite okay

This is not bad although It's a rap LP...

Hmm - HipHop is not mine, but this one ist quite ok. Interesting samples, grooving rhythm.

It was alright not what I typically listen to

beats are great, drags on a bit

Good album.

This was a fun hip hop album. Good flow, fun backing instruments, no complaints. No standouts but no skips either. 6/10 (3/5)

Pretty solid bars overall but I need more upbeat beats.

Love some early 2000s hip hop

Pretty chill jazz rap record. Some songs overstay their welcome longer than others but for the most part this works best in the background. Sort of reminds me of Souls of Mischief and Tribe a little bit.

I didn’t hear this album so much because I don’t like this kind of hip hop.

It’s jamming, it’s grooving, it’s funking

Forgettable, nothing special or exciting. But good

I did know 'What's Golden'. As far as hiphop goes this is more my style - positive and catchy, though still didn't love the rapping.

Very early 2000's. Didn't age that well, tbh

Sicuramente sono dei negri

That was good stuff. Lots of energy.

Not my thing, ok I guess but nothing special

Alt Hip-Hop from 2002. Never head of them before. Standouts: Thin Line, Freedom, Break, A Day at the Races 3.5

Perfectly ok. Nothing jumping out but nothing desperately needing to be skipped.

Brought back memories I didn't know I had.

I enjoyed the beats and several verses

This wasn't bad, by any means- I enjoyed the beats, and the flow of the MCs. I just don't think there is anything on the album that particularly elevates it above a lot of other hip-hop albums.

I hear slick lyrics, fun sampleing, and creative beats that work well together. Each song belongs cohesively to this band's style, but also each one is unique enough to keep me interested for the most part.

Hip hop has never been a genre that I've enjoyed or invested much time into, but this is probably some of the most enjoyable hip hop I've listened to. The album started with a really fun bass riff, and various songs had really fun samples of piano, wind instruments and other double bass riffs, which helped me get through the album, but I can't say I enjoyed the album. I prefer songs to have more melodic singing, which this genre does not provide.

Pretty good, some of the samples were very fun, but not quite my thing overall.

So good until the homophobia came out of nowhere 💀

I enjoyed it - not my genre and still enjoyed it

If it's fair to call this classic rap, I'm happy to say I've finally been able to enjoy another album from this timeframe. Lately I've been getting a lot of really old hip-hop albums that don't resonate at all with me. This Jurassic 5 album just hits different though. Might be due to it being 2002 and not the early 90s. As I'm writing this I sort of realize it's probably not even fair to call it classic rap - but it does still have that vibe. I don't know. I enjoyed it.

That actually wasn't bad. Inoffensive hiphop/rap. Went on too long as always but there were actually some decent tunes in there. More relaxed ones were more enjoyable. Saved a few.

Kopfnickermusik. Gut zum nebenbei hören.

All in all it was perfectly fine hip hop, but it was almost an hour that didn't really go anywhere and wasn't memorable

Freedom If You Only Knew Break Remember His Name Thin Line First half was pretty alright. Second half felt forced and boring. Not bad tho honestly

Groovy funk from real instruments, intelligent lyrics from strong voices. What's missing is some edge.

Album 350 of 1001 Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers Rating : 3 / 5 This is some hip hop I can deal with. Some entertaining moments.

Tight, jazzy beats. An excellent groove. On some of the tunes, the vocals don't mix as well as others; they are a bit too much in the foreground. All the samples make a smooth interstitial thread that keeps the movement through the tracks nice and buttery.

For hip hop, which I’m not a fan of, I could actually tolerate this one. Seems like they were early on and do some old school rapping. I’m right in the middle at 2.5 stars.

The different voices made this album interesting. I have no idea what they were saying though.

Somewhat entertaining, had some good beats.

Good beat selection with nice layed back beats Alll the members have decent chemistry Nothing that memorable all the tracks are fairly good All performances are pretty good

Quite medium. Technically solid but feels like it’s missing some sort of x factor. I prefer the second half of the album. Acetate Prophets a wild song at the end. Fave Tracks: Thin Line, After School Special, Hey, Acetate Prophets 2.9/5

I expected to dislike this album but it's actually really good. Most of my rap knowledge comes from the stuff that's been popular in the 2010s and I much prefer this style.

Delightfully different. Good vibe. A lot of callbacks to classic hip hip and tap with some modern styles. Not something I would pick out again, but didn't dislike it.

Enjoyed it. Incredibly vibey. Had great fun sorting through my clothes while bopping to this. Really liked the deep voiced rapper. Some songs a bit too repetitive chorus wise. The beginnings of the songs are so good. Gonna mark it down a little though as I wouldn’t re listen I don’t think.

I am not big on Hip Hop but this is extremely listenable. Well produced. I like the sound bites they use throughout. I may revisit this album in the future. 3/5

I liked this album but done of the songs pumped me up enough to push into 4 stars

Power in Numbers was a new discovery for me through this generator journey. There are things I enjoy here and things I don’t find to be essential listening at all. This album boasts rock solid (though eventually somewhat monotonous) production and a crew of spitters all on a pretty high technical level. Unfortunately, it feels like a lot of fun wordplay and not much else. Certain tracks feature good hooks and something of a lyrical narrative to them, others are more rapid fire posse cuts. A problem I have with this album is it feels like it’s about a half-decade too late to have the feel of something really significant. Oh and Chali 2na (and his closer to a decade and a half late delivery) takes me out of some of these tracks completely given his corny voice and emphasis on not very substantive word acrobatics. Why he would get the first full verse on the album is beyond me. 6/10

very old school, I like it!

This was very okay. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. I definitely think there’s better Jurassic 5 albums that could have been on this list.

Good stuff. Have a weird thing about old rap albums. They just don’t seem as good if you weren’t listening to them when they were new and hot. I have a feeling this is how it will be for most of the rap albums I encounter on this journey.

Fun album with some great songs, love What's Golden but I did already know it. Like a lot of rap albums especially west coast it probably went on a little too long. Torn between 3 or 4 out of 5 as I gave it 7.3/10 on spreadsheet but I did really enjoy it I just think it was missing more stand out moments for a 1 hour album. Stand out songs, What's Golden, Thin Line, High Fidelity.

interesting. old school rap

1. - 2. 3.8 3. 3.6 4. 3.4 5. 3.4 6. 3.5 7. 3.5 8. 4 9. 3.4 10. 3.2 11. 3.7 12. 3.2 13. 2.5 14. 3 15. 4 16. 3.6 17. 4.4

Pretty good overall. Although nothing really grabbed me as being a standout track.

Decent hip hop album with a group trading off raps. Some nice diversity in tone, flow, rhymes, and beats. Beats are easy to groove to, and sometimes quite funky. Very old school vibe, somewhat surprising to hear that this came out in 2002. Overall, this album is really about the sound -the groove and vibe. While lyrics can be clever, I’m not really sure what they’re rapping about most of the time or that they really have much of significance to say. Enjoyable listen but not a significant impact on me.

Some great moments, but still somewhat disappointing. Beats are direct and grooving, variety of flow is refreshing, but the message doesn't come across as well as it could.

•Owned •With each MC's style clearly defined, and relying heavily on the sounds that defined J5—boom bap beats, obscure but jammy licks, harmonic choruses—Power in Numbers is a slicker successor to their debut. The harmony breaks down a little when they contradict one another, even on neighboring tracks. Sounds nitpicky of me (sure), but J5 were lauded for their thoughtful lyrics. Listening closer doesn't always support this. Still a handful of tracks are a reminder of how J5 helped bring lyricism to the mainstream. •3/5

I've always found J5 to be a little too old school / hokey for me. I appreciate that they're offering an alternative to the gangsta rap style that was all the rage in the 90's and early 2000's, and I definitely have an appetite for that (see Def Jux, Anticon, Deltron, Sage Francis -- favorites of mine from that era), but the production and beats for many of the J5 songs I've heard just maybe don't match the times. Feels too much like modern rappers (with genuine skill at spitting verses for sure) trying hard to make music for an early 80's hip hop audience. There isn't a lot of variance from the format: steady beat, minimal production, six rappers taking turns rapping fast, on beat. "What's Golden" kicks tho. Just an opinion from someone who mostly listens to indie rock, but is hip hop curious.

As far as hip hop goes this one was pretty decent.

Meh hip hop

It was fine! Not particularly groundbreaking, but I enjoyed it.

Not my jam but it wasn’t bad

Musically and lyrically this was fine. Knocked down a notch because many of the tracks’ flow/rhythms in the vocals seemed repetitive. For me and my general dislike if rap/hip-hop music, this was quite decent.

Download a couple songs

This was okay. Nothing stood out to me.

Solid album. I enjoyed how each song segued into the next.

Nice groove and overall feel to the record. Lyrically I struggled.

It's the early 2000s. The mixes, samples and lyrics are all of the Era. I can't get into it at this point.

I maybe loved this, which makes me question damn near every decision I've ever made in my life. Have I always been this person? Or was this album made just for me? It was too good too early to sustain.

Ended up liking the album tracks much more than the singles

#101. I never listened to them before. I honestly thought it sounded like it was from like 5 or 10 years before then. Sounds like it came before the stuff like Jay Z and Kanye and such that was popular at the time. 3/5: pretty good

Strong album - stripped down country at its best. Willie's voice and storytelling are top-notch.

not really my jam but pretty good stuff.

I gave this album three stars for its creativity and relevance, but honestly, just not my thing. I went into it with an open mind and listened to every track. I thoroughly enjoyed two cuts: “Thin Line” featuring Nelly Furtado because it actually had singing between the rapping and the last cut, “Acetate Prophets” because it’s fun(ky) and I could actually see myself dancing to something like this in the 80s/early 90s.

Alternative hip hop. Ni fú ni fá.

Pretty good, liked What’s Golden and React the most

Good Stuff

I was a bit hesistant when I realised this was hip hop/rap but the first couple of songs are really good.

not a genre I'm super familiar with. great beats but couldn't hold my interest most of the time

good to learn about them!

Just not my genre. But solid beats.

Hip-hop. Low-key. Felt like 1990’s

I suspect they were influenced by Tribe Called Quest. I hear similarities, though this doesn’t lean into jazz influences as strongly. I like this kind of HipHop and enjoyed this album. 3.5

Not a hip hop fan, per se, but I like the jazzy/funky beats. Sounds more mid-90s to me. Decent. 3.4

Solid. Nothing flashy but good for listening to while in the office. I think I got them confused with someone else as I was certain I’d heard them before but nothing rang a bell. Once it finished it started up with Kool Keith which is always a treat.

Straight Hip-Hop

Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.

Alternative hip hop. Ni fú ni fá.

- very smooth rap with some good flows - longer than it needed to be - the songs with the features were all pretty good

- really cool beats and flow - enjoy the different voices - walks the edge of corny sometimes

Honestly didn’t hate this. Low bar but could listen to it again. Very average but was engaging!

Good but aint into that style

Not bad

Thought this album was great. Guy spoke about some real life stuff and I always appreciate an artist that can do that in musical form. Last song on the album is trash though, horrible instrumentals for 6 minutes lol.

pretty solid hip hop album

Fell off: at the start this was sounding perfect, I was digging every second of it. Then paused and came back to the second half and it sounded very mid. I was loving the jazz samples but those elements I was enjoying and am familiar with fell away in the second half. Just underwhelming + the cover is very dated.

The kool keith freestyle was funnest (ddt) the rest slightly too intelligent too socially conscious to be too fun. Solid classic beats, sampled?

Some interesting diversions here! “Freedom” is fantastic. But rap isn’t my favorite.

Alternative hip hop. Ni fú ni fá.

Never heard of them but the beats are decent, lyrics good.

This had enough variety and musical depth to keep me interested. I do like this kind of alternative hip-hop. I can remember Jurassic 5 vaguely and I think I remember concrete schoolyard (from a previous album?). It was great as background cooking/cleaning music because it kept my energy up. Loved What’s Golden.

This was cool. I was not able to give it the listen it required for a full-on review, but I bet that even a closer listen would result in the same rating. I enjoyed it, glad to have heard it, may not go back for more only because there is just so much music out there to explore.

My kind of hip hop!

Got through about half of it

I know very little about this style of music. This album sounded fine. No strong feelings.

Wow this really is the week of R&B and hip hop. This was fine. It kind of faded into the background while I was driving but when I actively listened, I didn’t mind it.

Good album, great band. I like their prior album more but have lots of fond memories of this kne

This is - 5/5 Freedom - 5/5 If You Only Knew - 5/5 Break - 3/5 React - 3/5 A Day at the Races - 4/5 Remember His Name - 5/5 What's Golden - 5/5 Thin Line - 3/5 After School Special - 3/5 High Fidelity - 3/5 Sum of Us - 3/5 DDT - 2/5 One of Them - 3/5 Hey - 2/5 I am Somebody - 3/5 Acetate Prophets - 2/5

Pretty good, but nothing particularly groundbreaking or anything.

Loved One Of Them, cool beat, and I think this aggressive style fits them, they sound great. The rest is decent, but nothing else really stands out

Yea, pretty sweet

I saw Jurassic 5 on Vans Warped Tour (of all places) back in 2000 and had no idea who they were. And I'm still not that familiar with them. This album is good for sure, and it's all over the place in style but strangely works together. Really fun album and something I'd like to listen to more.

I liked it!

Yh I mean it was good

What's Golden is a classic, enjoyed the intro track and the lean on to Freedom.

Aight, listened to most of it. A real time capsule of underground rap at the time

Good album. 7/10.

These guys have a very cool and unique sound but it gets really repetitive. This a group that you would be fine just listening to the hits. 3.5 stars.

Quite liked this Got a bouncy, funky energy

Closer to 4 I enjoyed. Good variety, great flow/lyrics throughout

Rapp. Ekki mín uppáhaldstónlistarstefna en ágætt fyrir það sem það var.

Pretty good. Love the beats

Old school hip hop vibe. Liked it more than I thought I would.

This Is // Freedom // If You Only Knew // What’s Golden // Thin Line // 3.5/5

An old school type rap album. They admit, through their lyrics in an early track, that they are trying to give something different. I am not overly familiar with the genre, but I think they succeeded. Meaningful lyrics and a fun backing groove. Mid 3

An album with a lot of variety in sounds. Hip-hop is among the genres I seek out the least, though I usually find myself enjoying it when I listen to it. My extremely uneducated opinion is that the beats and instrumentals sound solid. The jazzy tracks in particular stand out to me.

Pretty good, will probably have to dive deeper into it, really liked "after school special" the guitar sounds similar to B.I.G.'s "Just playing"

Good, but ultimately too long and samey as an album. Standouts like What’s Golden and A Day at the Races are still absolute bangers.

An alright rap album.

phunky phresh likes- thin line

Pretty good, old-school sounding hi-hop album. I was surprised to see that it was released in 2002 after I started listening. Not much to say about this one, I enjoyed it but didn't move me as much as some other hip-hop albums do. Fave tracks: Break, Thin Line, Acetate Prophets

An enjoyable album with classic Hip Hop vibes. Big props to the producers for sampling, mixing and effects in here - give it a very cohesive feeling. The rapping was also very smooth, but not the highlight for me. Fav Tracks: Break, What's Golden, High Fidelity

A chill album built on top of minimal beats. The energy is very consistent, but few songs stand out over others. Rapping is never bad but never impressive. An album you listen to for vibe above anything else, if this is the vibe you want. I like the more experimental and sample-heavy final song quite a bit, but it doesn't really fit with the album that precedes it. Best song: Acetate Prophets

I really like most of the songs. I probably won't listen to it beginning to end again but. Lot of the lyrics are genius and great rhythem.

puike plaat!

Paar gute tracks

AJ: pretty cooooool

Väldigt bra album, även om det inte är min favoritgenre så gillade ja det mycket

What's Golden is an serious banger.

As a fan of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul or The Roots, I have always been aware of who Jurassic 5 were, since they picked the ball those first two acts had dropped at the end of the nineties, and this around the same time The Roots dropped its own masterpieces. Jurassic 5's thing is all about positivity, lyrics devoid of any unnecessary aggro bullsh*t, and the lush soul and jazz samples that are the most fitting for those themes. Native Tongues 2.0. The thing is, as respectable and nicely done as *Power In Numbers* is, it's still one or two notches under most albums made by all those bands I've just mentioned here. How come? Well, I've always thought that the only thing that prevented Jurassic 5 to become an "essential" band was their lack of identity somehow. The music of ATCQ, De La Soul and The Roots had very idiosyncratic traits that made those acts unambiguously endearing--and the same went for the very recognizable rapping styles within each one of those legendary oufits. In comparison, Jurassic 5 sounds a little, well... *indistinct* in its intentions, both vocally and musically. The tones and inflexions of those admittedly very skilled rappers are a little linear: only their contrasting voice registers allow you to truly differentiate between them. And that aspect is a little underwhelming, as good as the rapping is on the album. As a consequence nothing really stands out in *Power In Numbers*. For starters, it kicks off with quite average cuts, a sort of understated move that's probably a mistake here. The Roots sometimes made similar moves, but what came next always justified starting things nice and slow (because the build-up after that was often insane!). This is not what happens here. If I make a bit of an effort, I could single out "A Day At The Races" and "Remember His Name", with its mesmerizing, echo-laden flute sample--along with the easy-on-the-ear single "What's Golden", maybe. The acoustic guitar sample on "Thin Line" is quite pretty at first glance, but it sorts of wears out its welcome once this track about a man being "friend-zoned" by a love-interest ends after nearly five minutes (that could probably have been cut short before that ultimate time stamp) I don't think I need to elaborate any further, because everything on the second side of the record has the sort of linear dynamics already found in "Thin Line". The songs are not bad by any means. But it's not like they're gonna revolutionize the hip hop playbook either. Plus, this record doesn't have "Concrete Schoolyard" in its tracklisting (it's in their first LP, originally an EP that was later expanded). So why would I bother adding *Power In Numbers* to my shelves if it doesn't even have what is maybe the band's best track ever? On a more positive note, there's one last cut that's worthy of your attention here: closer "Acetate Prophets", whose fast bongo-laden and koto-enhanced (!) rhythms seem to hearken back to the experimentations of a highly respectable member of the original Native Tongues crew, i.e. the Jungle Brothers. But the idiosyncratic touches are too few and too late by that point. And my oh my, why is this track an instrumental only??! Another missed occasion where Jurassic 5 could have really shone, instead of only twinkling! So that's it. *Power In Numbers* is a good album, but it's not *stellar*. Therefore, including it in the list probably uses a slot that could be given to a better record. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 3). Number of albums left to review: 448 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 256 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 132 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 167 (including this one)

I know Jurassic 5 for one song that is not on this album, and was overplayed by my ride during Junior year of high school. Freedom has a nice laid-back old school beat. Really dig the different textures of the MC voices. They run short bars back to back; good flow with "conscious" lyrics. I can get down with it. Remember His Name has a sweet groove. Lead MC has a solid flow with an impressive inclusion of "a salam alaikum" that sounds effortless. The beat on What's Golden sounds almost like something RTJ would produce. I enjoyed Thin Line and the back and forth beat on After School Special. Overall, I found this to be a solid hip-hop album with a set of MCs who have good flow and solid beat selection. That said, there weren't many standouts or any real risks to extend this beyond a 3.5 for me. Production was solid with some beat variation, but I found things to stagnate a bit and felt like the album ran longer than it really needed to. Its a 3 / 5 for me.

One of those albums that likely wasn't appreciated properly because I listened while working and couldn't pay full attention to the lyrics. The start of the album was a bit average, but I started getting into the groove around the middle. Last song is pretty good.

I normally don't like when there are too many people taking turns singing in hip-hop, but this group does it extremely well with the 4 or 5 contributors. A Day at the Races goes hard didn't look up who had that last verse but he was flowing. Not my usual type of music but this album was very good. The beats were great to have on in the background and kept my feet moving.

Agréablement surpris par cet album de hiphop, un peu long mais avec des bangers

How to rate this? Not my cup of tea, not after listening either, but surely well done I guess.

Classic but basic. Nothing spectacular.

it’s good

It had a few good songs, but not that memorable otherwise.

Good vibes.

I liked the 90's rap vibes and good message. This is a good example of less is more. It ended up feeling too long.

Intéressant mais pas mon style

"Power in Numbers" is the third sudio album by American hip hop group Jurassic 5. The album starts where their previous album "Quality Control" left off with the same bass line. It features different song styles and songs generally start and end with a speech sample. The album had decent critic reviews and commercially hit #16 in the US and #46 in the UK. After a brief intro, the album gets going with "Freedom." This is more chill with a groove. They're taking a swipe at superpowers not helping poorer nations. "If You Only Knew" takes it in a jazzy diection. Soul music they can relate to. It kicks in to a more traditional hip hop song in "Break." A bigger beat and multiple simultaneous rappers. Sampling "Love to Hate" by Burt and Franklin. And the sampling continues with "Urizen" by David Axelrod in "A Day at the Races."This has a deeper groove with a great bass line. Multple rappers including Big Daddy Kane and Percee P. The first single "What's Golden" keeps the groove and bass going. Sampling Public Enemy's "Prophets of Rage" and sounds somewhat like N.W.A. A cool echoing rapping chorus. Nelly Furtado contributes vocals to the more romantic song "Thin Line." Never a bad idea to sample Minnie Ripperton. Kool Keith contributes to the a capella "DDT." Sa-Ra Creative Partners produced "Hey." This is more soulful and ambient. I felt the Outkast vibe. The album concludes with "Acetate Prophets." Sampling 11 songs, noises and speeches. This goes all over the place: tribal, drumline, a flute, people screaming, Middle Eastern music, chanting. I like chaotic endings. This was an easy, smooth listen. I wouldn't say it breaks any new ground lyrically or musically but nonetheless I enjoyed its variety and sampling. Solid production. A decent record.

Acceptable rap....

Really great production on the album. Cut Chemist and Chali already got high marks from me for Ozomatli. It's a good album and continued to push HipHop in the early 00's to blend more and more with other genres. 3.5/5

Bättre än väntat, men han som rappar med en mörk röst kan jag inte lyssna på. Alldeles för långt album

The lyrics seemed like they were trying a little too hard.

Much better than what I anticipated, kinda sounded like proto-Gorillaz at times. Am I crazy?

Very Fun.

high energy hip hop with plenty of cameo appearances. not necessarily my thing, but not terrible.

There was nothing wrong with this album. I rather enjoyed it.

Almost did 4. My roommate had this on CD and we listened to it a lot.

Me gusta este Rap de los 90 a los 2000. Incluso aparece Nelly Furtado que una vez fue una musa alternativa de rap, hip-hop y cosas y luego pasó a lo comercial sin contemplaciones. "If you onlu knew", "A day at the races", "Remember his name", "What's golden", "Thin line", "High fidelity". Me lo apunto, volveré a escucharlo.

Got good flow.

I'm in no way a hip-hop expert, but I hadn't heard of Jurassic 5 before. Further digging showed that this group has enjoyed relatively little success, stateside or otherwise. Some of the more "unheard of" acts on this project have been big misses, so I was nervous about this one. Well, I was actually really surprised to find that I enjoyed this album! Arriving in 2002, this album does a really nice job of straddling the sound of 90s hip-hop and embracing something more modern in the new millennium. Even from the "modern" angle alone, this album definitely has a different hip-hop sound even when compared to other albums that were coming out around the same time. This album does not have a "hardcore" feel to it either; there is something rather laid back and at-ease about the hip-hop here. Again, I'm not a big hip-hop listener, but I would definitely recommend this album, especially to anyone who IS a hip-hop fan. It seems like it has been widely slept on, and it deserves more attention! A pleasant surprise, for sure. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could.

Good old school hip hop but a bit too clean sounding for me. Rating: 3.4

Not My cup of tea... Me gustó el tema con Furtado.

Good in parts

I’m not a big hip hop fan but this album was very approachable.

Pretty decent old school hip hop. I did not regret listening to it. But, also nothing super remarkable.

Good backing tracks, good rhymes, but it all felt a bit too clean. Something was missing. Overall pretty good, but not great.

Ya, I can do this. I believe fresh is the word

Pretty good hip hop album, liked What’s Golden the most (feel like I’ve heard it somewhere before).

Solid rap album that has generally great beats and uses great interplay between the rappers. I particularly like the stretch from A Day At the Races to What’s Golden. Other than that I think it’s just ok, some solid moments, some weaker.

I enjoyed most of the songs on this one more than I initially thought. The beats slap so hard and the samples are great. Favorite Songs: Hey, After School Special, React, and Thin Line.

Solid hip hop album.

Good album, I enjoyed it the whole way through. 3

3.5 Okay rap, wouldn't mind listening to it again, wouldn't seek it out either

I like this album -- great songs with catchy beats and vocals, plus the arrangements, often including various instruments and harmonies, as well as plenty of samples, are a strong feature.

I liked the funky beats in this album, I can clearly understand the underlying message in this album.

Muy divertido, lo escucharía de vuelta.

gran album de rap buenos feats buenos breaks samples y que desconocia completamente

Friday 10th March, last day in Sorrento. In bed booking visa shit.

I did not listen to this closely, but every time it bubbled up, I liked what was going on. It's not spectacular, but this is very solid work worth another listen.

Best rap album so far

pretty generic old man hip hop, but it had one or two good songs.

Feels old school. very chill

Phenomenal production. Runs a bit long. I liked the song with big daddy Kane

Never been a big political rap guy, but the bars are hard and the beats bang

This is a good solid, albeit formulaic, hip-hop effort from 2002. It is perfectly reasonable and easy to listen to, but it is hard for me to understand how it fits on this list. Good, very good perhaps, but not exceptional.

Not familiar with this group. Generally not my preferred genre, but I thought this was really good!

It was fine. The dude with the deeper voice was sometimes off-putting. Some good stuff, some so so stuff. Indont really get why it's here.

Pleasantly old school and not homophobic, misogynistic or hyper-violent. MCs have great flow, production is funky. Enjoyed even more after multiple spins. My favourite bit is the last 10 seconds of "After School Special", when the kid from the introduction comes in and spits a few bars. I would totally listen to a whole track of that kid.

Прикольненько, хороший хип-хоп, но под фон, не более

Very good, funky album with quality rhymes.
