Alright, I give up. Every review I write I always try to make it as insightful as possible, and I always say whatcI can about my thoughts on the album, the artist as a whole, and any other relevant context I know about the album. But I am officially done trying to make my reviews interesting for albums like this. Half the albums on this list are some generic crap that nobody needs to care about, and while it has made for an interesting challenge to try and give an in depth review of each one, I truly have nothing left. You want to know what I think of this album? Go and read literally any of my other reviews of others just as boring as this. I've said everything there is to be said about all the music that's this uninteresting, and to be honest I'm amazed I've made it this far giving so many full reviews of albums with absolutely zero substance.
I’m thinking yes! Jurassic 5!!!! Then I see it’s from 2001….ok Then I see that they aren’t from the 70’s like I thought. Ok This has that overly political sound to it. Sort of stuck in the 80’s sound. See Del the Funky Homosapien or Arrested Development, though they were most likely mid to late 90’s. In an entertainment sense, this type of sound is lacking for me. The beats are serviceable but lyrically and delivery wise it’s very stale. If I remember one song from this album I’d be surprised. Annnnddd I don’t.
Some great tunes, some repetitive and boring and often overlong.

I'd heard of the band but not listened to any. I like some hip hop a lot, but a lot puts me off, if the music is shallow and/or the tone is off. The tone here is mostly not off-putting (I get that they were alt hip hop), but the music rarely grabbed me, and little of the words stuck out enough to seize my attention. One slender positive exception, when they dropped in a recording of some dialogue with an Australian, hearing my local accent was amusing. One negative exception, I'd read that One Of Them was bad, so I focused on its lyrics, it's a non-alt diss track against unnamed MCs, questioning their masculinity and supposed toughness, I find it tedious and off. So it's a mix of okay and bad, I'll call it Pretty Poor, 3/10.

I think this album probably suited its time, but hearing it for the first time now, I couldn’t appreciate it.

On the surface I might give it a 3, not great but not bad. But when I compare the other early 2000's offerings in this genre it's a 2.
What’s Golden is a great pump up track. Reminds me of my college roommate Crow. Most of these tracks seems like they would fit well on a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.
This was generally a fine rap album that I was vibing too, but then it took a weird swing with One of Them and its homophobia and fear of metro guys (remember when we had to coin a term to describe straight men who cared about their appearance? The early '00s were a weird time). And that just kind of pushed a perfectly serviceable album into the bad territory.
Weird homophobia randomly in One of Them. I’m not here for that. If I could have thrown the lyrics to that song out and just rated this based on the beats, it’d probably be a 4 or a 5.
I like the concept of it but it feels stale by now.
i was dreading listening to this one, but it wasnt that bad. it' wont make my rotation, but better than expected.
The more I listen to this 90s and early 2000s hip hop the more it starts to sound the same. But I'm sure people who mostly listen to that stuff thinks 70s rock all sounds the same. Nothing special here, but it did have fun beats and good rhyming.

It's a hip hop album. And a pretty long one at that. Overall, I'm not a fan. It may not be quite as laden with misogyny, violence, and homophobia as some of the others, but it's still the same thing over and over. I mean, of course those elements are there if you want them, just not front and center like most of the hip hop albums on this list. For the most part. But the lyrics are dumb and simple. The music is unoriginal and repetitive. The whole genre is just monotonous and irritating and this album is the same as all the rest. Though there were points where I was digging the grooves. I particularly liked the tracks where elements of funk/jazz were incorporated. But again, I was mostly not inspired by anything here. It may not be quite as bad as others but still, not for me.

2.25 - not sure why I just couldn't get into this album. There's obviously some HOT TRACKS here though, and I will acknowledge that there is a place and time for this album, I just couldnt seem to find myself in it today.
This was OK, but too much repetition
A two for me, but a bonus mention for the fact A Day At the Races gave me peak THUG Nostalgia Check it, man! Muska is actually coming to this dump for a skate demo. Get dressed and let's go! Home sweet home. What a dump... at least it has some killer spots. The old pool down by the highschool, scab land, the drainage ditch on the south side of town, and Elm Street, our own little strip of paradise. Complete with drug dealers who hate skateboarders.

Starts strong but tapers off pretty quickly. Also -1 for the homophobia in One Of Them.
This is pretty ordinary. Nothing special about the beats. Some moments of decent flow - but not many.

27/03/2026 1. this is - oo like the bass... 2. freedom - like the tambourine... nice, but a bit repetitive. 3. if you only knew - like the intro. lyrics are a bit cringe? just a bit surface level. maybe a bit slow? not sure why i'm not feeling it :/ flute is nice though. *4. break - loving the drums immediately. liking the beat a looot more in this one! love the scratching near the end!! reaallly nice :) *5. react - loove the bass. bit groovier... sampling and scratches are lovely! *6. a day at the races - bass is great! guitar is real nice aswell! looove the faster rapping in this one! maybe going on a bit long... stokely carmichael! 7. remember his name - nice but nothing really jumps out... *8. what's golden - liking this immediately! loove the synth(?) and the horns!! great! 9. thin line - loove the strings at the start.. loooove the sampling!! feels like it's going on abiiit long though... 10. after school special - nice :) like the ending. 11. high fidelity - like the horns. kindof just washes over a bit though. bit monotonous. love the scratching though. *12. sum of us - liking this one more... reaaally nice :) *13. ddt - great!!! 14. one of them - very much dragging on at this point... not bad just getting too long. *15. hey - loooooving the start!! dragged on a bit, just became a bit forgettable. 16. i am somebody - fine! *17. acetate prophets - sounds more interesting.... not my favourite, but would rather have an album of more experimental tracks like this instead of the same sounding tracks all over again for one hour. five minutes in and it's grown on me! some of the songs were really nice, but a lot of it just kindof washed over me? it wasn't bad, but especially with 17 tracks it got a bit repetitive and the beat stayed quite similar on a looot of the tracks. liked the deeper voiced rapper a lot! public enemy does a similar thing but feels a lot more energetic and abrasive - which i just enjoy listening more to! ddt was a really phenomenal change-up without any beat or instruments!!
This was ok. For me, there was nothing particularly special about it. Curious as to why it was in the list, if I’m honest. Good for what it is, but instantly forgettable for the most part. My favourite tune was What’s Golden. I’ll probably never revisit it though.

Before: Never heard of this album or artist. I'm thinking some form of rap or similar based on the album cover and explicit lyrics warning. During: The first few minutes are not bad, hip hop? Discogs calls it Conscious Hip Hop, while Wikipedia calls if Alternative Hip Hop. Now up, "If You Only Knew", I do like this some. Maybe I'll find a contender for my favorites of 2002 list; let's see what else they got. "Break" is good. "React" is good. By the time we get to the 6th track though, "A Day at The Races" I'm getting tired of the music. Unfortunately Spotify does not know the lyrics for a lot the numbers on this album. Speaking of lyrics, one problem I have with rap, hip hop, and similar genres is that so much of it so self referential, it gets a little tiresome. I might like the music but the lyrics drag it down. After : It's a long album. Definately got tiresome by the end. So much so that I would rather not listen, than listen to it, which edges it just below a 3. I decided to give it another try but by the time we get to number 6 out of 15, "A Day At The Races", I'm done. I definately don't want to listen to the whole album again and overall I'd rather not listen to it, than listen to it, but I don't hate it. That sits it squarely in 2 territory, even though I did like a couple of tracks a little. There's nothing on this album that I love but my 2002 list if a little sparse at 47 tracks and my goal is between 50 - 100 so I skim through the album one more time to see if there is anything I can grab. I decide to add "React" to the 48th spot, just after Clinic's, "For The Wars", and "Thin Line", just below that. Naw, scratch "Thin Line", it's not that good, so I remove it. It's catchy but a bit too repetitive and long.

I enjoyed listening to this. Totally not offended. But I don’t think that this is essential listening yet. I’m finding the backing tracks to be kinda boring and one dimensional. The scratching is cool though! Likely will need to listen to this many times to understand fully because of all the words.
This feels like hip-hop for people who don’t like hip-hop. It’s very smooth, very polished and very forgettable. It reminds me a lot of Me Phi Me but with more bite. The album is very mid 90s, and swings along for at least 20 unnecessary minutes.
Definitely has its moments, but like most hip-hop albums devolves into extremely similar sounding songs occupying the non-singles.

I really just don't think this kinda thing is for me. I've heard 17 track albums that are about an hour that I've liked more (ie. Blonde by Frank Ocean or DS2 by Future), and this just struggled to justify the length. It also got weirdly homophobic in the middle? which I get rap does sometimes but it just felt kinda weird. Favorites: Freedom, If You Only Knew, A Day at the Races

I was looking forward to this, since I've had quite a few enjoyable hip-hop albums recently, and while I didn't know about these guys, one of my friends was a big fan. I was very underwhelmed. There are a few songs with good beats, but the lyrics are pretty tame and the bests are mostly forgettable. The first song says something about not being a corny collective, but that's exactly what I thought they were at a number of times while listening.
Pu-pu-pu. Well, first of all, it’s a cool band name. The first third of the album is good: there are some interesting melodies. But the rest is boring, ordinary hip-hop. I don't understand why this album is on the list to listen to.

Decent listen that has the same problem of many Hip Hop albums which is monotonous, repetitive looped samples. The absolute worst example is the Ennio Morricone sample in 'Remember His Name' that was so irritating I couldn't finish the track. There's some interesting and creative sounds added, but the constant looping of the same sample over and over again just doesn't do it for me. The intent and fact it is a staple of the genre doesn't make it interesting to listen to. Top Track = Freedom

They’re talented, but this just isn’t my preferred rap style. That jazzy, super aware stuff comes across as so corny. J5 are for someone, just not so much for me.
Considering I am not a rap fan and likely never will be, I actually found parts of this quite bearable. Felt more musical than the other rap this has thrown at me, I think having so many different people work on it led to some pretty varied, but decent results. Wouldn't listen again, but I can't bash it much.
Not interesting at all. No builds. Some riffs or beats are cool but no changes just drives me to boredom.
Started OK. Didn’t get better. Got worse. Kept getting worse. Bloodless pastiche.

Another Hip-Hop album! I liked the opening track, "This Is", because it was Dub Reggae rather than Hip-Hop, but then it just became another fairly boring Hip-Hop album.

58/1001 :: Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 4 Fav Tracks: A Day At The Races, What’s Golden Listen before you die: No An interesting conscious rap album. 6 dudes delivering flows that pretty much sound straight out of the 80s. I thought overall the music was well cool. Funky, layered and fit the style of positive hip hop they were delivering. All that said, there's a couple of cool songs but this brand of hip hop is not really what I’m into. I hate to say it but it’s too nice. It feels like there’s no edge to it. So I’m moving on...

It's becoming abundantly clear that rap just isn't my thing.
Listening to Jurassic 5 in the wake of the B-52’s is an instructive exercise in restraint. Both bands shy away from elaborate harmonic development, relying instead on the voices to structure and propel the music. But whereas the B-52’s luxuriate in contrast and theatricality, Jurassic 5 remain almost painfully cohesive - a quartet of baritones moving in lockstep, polite to a fault. Fred Schneider’s bark, Kate Pierson’s swoops, Cindy Wilson’s piercing clarity - these are voices that not only delineate sections but give the songs their personality. Jurassic 5, in comparison, offer a kind of tonal democracy.Of course, this is the genre’s insistence: words matter, flow matters. Yet the words here pass by in such thickly clustered knots that meaning evaporates - syllables blur into rhythm, rhythm into texture, texture into a monochrome droning. It is not so much verbal dexterity as aural wallpaper. Contrast this with the easy cartoonism of the B-52’s: Rock Lobster! is ridiculous, yes, but it is intelligible. It sticks.N.W.A., at least, understood the theatre of contrast. Eazy-E’s squeak played against Ice Cube’s growl - a deliberate mismatch that threw sparks. Jurassic 5 decline the opportunity. They present not a cast of characters but a committee of clones. Socially conscious rap, Jurassic 5 prefer consensus, and consensus, for all its merits, can feel stifling.Even Kool Keith’s appearance on DDT is only distinguishable as a feature rather than another mid-range Jurassic 5er - a detail likely to be missed without specialist knowledge or access to the liner notes. However, the record comes alive when there is high contrast: the sections of Acetate Prophets and the cut-ups of high-voiced children provide texture and surprise. Most effective is Nelly Furtado. Her mere appearance stands out among the other voices, creating male/female contrast, sung/spoken contrast, without diminishing the genre’s focus on rhythm. Her singing against their rapping produces the most complex polyrhythms on the record. Here, at last, the album glimpses tension, colour, a kind of internal drama it rarely sustains elsewhere.Power in Numbers is meticulous and undeniably disciplined - neatly crafted by Cut Chemist. But there is a cost: in its admirable politeness, the record occasionally forfeits the thrill of unpredictability, the spark of mischief that makes music feel alive rather than respectable. 2 ‘Hot as you'd keep a furnace We kept it earnest Poems puncture your epidermis’ (After School Special) I was typing the name of this band into the search bar on my streaming app to cue this slop for a second listen when the app suggested ‘Jurassic Park - John Williams’. Naturally I listened to that instead of kidding myself that there were deeper layers of Jurassic 5’s album ready to reveal themselves to me. To be honest it isn’t John Williams‘ best - much of it is cluttered and cloying; especially when the choir aaaahhhs along in the main theme. The incidental stuff is gruel. What about those themes though? Unforgettable tunes. 1.5/5

Chill vibes
Never heard of Jurassic 5 and when it popped up I confused them with Maroon 5 and expected some boy-band pap. When I realised it was hip-hop I was even more disappointed. However, this does have some good melodies. ...And ear worms. For a while I was singing to myself "You one of them niggas". But of course I can't because I'm an old white guy and if I was to be caught singing that to myself in public I'd either get my head kicked in or at the very least some disgusted looks. And there's where the problem lies with hip-hop that uses this lyric; it's inaccessible and un-inclusive. I'm sure a lot of people can recall a young girl being brought up on stage at a festival and invited to sing along with Kendrick Lamar to one of his songs, and then when she does she's immediately shut down for singing the words that Lamar had written. Because she was white. How inclusive is that? Anyway. I liked some of this album. The language was only used in some songs so I'm going to give it a 2

I wasn't too impressed w/ this album to be honest.
Rap, slightly softer than gangsta rap but nothing that grabbed my attention as being stunningly different.
The production is good. This is evidenced by how good Big Daddy Kane sounds on the song he's featured on. The problem is that the back and forth "old school" rap style gimmick wears thin when the rappers don't really have anything to say. I've heard Charli 2na on other stuff and have liked him albeit in limited doses. Neither he nor the other guys have "it" at least inasmuch to make a better more interesting album.

By now though the promise of the album title and the first song re political issues is so far lacking. They are talking more about themselves. 8. Nother shot caller song. It's good but .. 9. Ridiculous song. Harry met Sally? 10. Same shit. Not a bopper. Don't put your kids on the album. J/k. It was cute but the song was meh. 11. Funky but sounds same. The chorus lifts it up some. Otherwise, doesn't stand out. 12. Finally political. But otherwise lyrics aren't too creative. An ok song. 13. Spoken poetry. Cappin'. Ok. 14. Linda, you a birch. Wherever. 15. Don't care. 16. Doesn't stand out. 17. Funky best. Instrumental for the most part. OVERALL: An ok album. Some fun tracks but not for me.
Cant get on board with this. Not my style of music. It seems far supirior to recent R&B / hip hob music we have recently had to endure on here. Least it wasnt ramming down our throats annoying themes in the lyrics. Wasnt just about balls and feminism which was unusual :)

- Hip Hop is not a genre of music I listen to very often, wasn't super stoked to see this on the list honestly. - As expected I didn't love it, but it wasn't that bad. Was easy enough to listen to while working on coding. Some songs were a little catchy, like What's Golden.
This was a very dry and boring album to me. This album doesn't do anything wrong or blatantly bad, but I can't away with very little after multiple listens Not a lot of memorable verses and a majority of songs are the same way. Comparing Kool Keith's odd and twisting verse on DDT to almost everything else feels like night and day in terms of entertainment Jurassic 5 weren't the only group rapping about the state of rap and it's issues, but I feel like it'd been done much better before this album and by other conscious contemporaries in the early 00s
I mean, it wasn't awful, but it's not something that I would deem essential listening. It certainly didn't feel essential while I was listening to it. Key tracks: Thin Line

Rap crap
A not very special album for the hip hop genre. Very dull and uninspiring flows and beats. More like stodge hop. Jackson 5, Pizzicato 5, Slaughterhouse 5 even MC5 much better. But not Ben Folds Five, they suck as well. Maroon 5? I guess I would have their debut any day over this.

This is an album that I’ve never heard of before, by a group that I also haven’t ever heard of. I’m not really well versed enough in hip hop to meaningfully articulate what I do and do not like, but largely I think the rapping on this album falls into the latter category. I found it to be boring, I guess. The Big Daddy Kane and Nelly Furtado features were cool, though. Musically I actually enjoyed this record quite a bit, lots of really cool chill and also very funky beats, and some really fun samples. I don’t think this is one that I’ll be going back to anytime soon. 2*
This may be a hot take, but I feel like there's a certain trope in hip hop of like, "oh we're socially conscious, classy, intelligent rappers, we're above all the gangster posturing, we're so old school, we're the last true bearers of soul, we're ascended, one love" and I think it's kinda corny and I really don't care for it (see also: Common, Mos Def). To some this may seem like a silly criticism when I really like groups like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, or Digable Planets which are not that different, but there's a clear difference to me. Anyway. Jurassic 5 definitely falls into the hella corny side of this divide. There is some really nice sampling on this album. I also liked the reveal at the end of "Remember His Name". But for the most part this album is just soooooooo corny. Sooooo lame. *yawn*

This was inoffensive, which made a refreshing change in this genre. Maybe because it didn’t hold my attention well enough, for whatever intricacies there were in this, to seep into my consciousness. Well, some old crap like that. I might give it another listen when I'm not as distracted, but it seems unlikely my opinion would change from 'ordinary' to 'wonderful'

Cute. Nothing special really. ‘Vibes-y’ maybe how I would describe it. I don’t know anything about rap but I would’ve thought it came out 10 years before it actually did. I like the phone gimmick.

What a weird choice for this list? Jurassic 5's first album is way better, and this one fell into an over-production trap: it's still bouncy and filled with interesting cadence, but it sounds like what someone might get if they threw "Safe hip hop for parents" into an AI generator.

I'm sure there's nothing intrinsically wrong with this album - it's just that it's not really my preferred genre. I like a wide range of music / musical styles. This album seemed to have elements of a number of styles - some.of which I like - but just not enough to make it interesting or worth going back to / favouriting (for me)... Maybe it's not aimed at me / I'm too middle aged / white / stuck in my ways - but at least I've listened to it...
I can tell that this book was written in the mid-2000s because no one would include Jurassic 5 in any hip-hop canon unless that list was made at the peak of backpacker rap, aka hip-hop for white kids that felt intellectual but mostly could fit in well with the Tony Hawk Underground and SSX Tricky soundtracks. It’s a “subgenre” that not only feels inherently problematic in retrospect, but also now sounds dauntingly traditionalist in the way it mimics the outdated simplicity of ‘80s rap, allowing it to be annoyingly arrogant about its perceived respect for the genre over Bling/Crunk/Gangsta rap, even though it arguably respects the genre less by insisting hip-hop should never have grown or expanded its sonic palette. But also, god, is it boring as hell to listen to as a result, unless you’re a dweeb who gets offended by curse words or typical gangsta rap topics because it’s “inappropriate.” Jurassic 5 is the quintessential backpacker hip-hop group, and Power in Numbers [along with their previous effort, Quality Control] is a good example of that scene. Not that this is the backpacker masterpiece – sans Madvillainy, that belongs to Deltron 3030, God Loves Ugly, any pre-RTJ El-P effort, or, my personal vote, The Minstrel Show, although that may not even qualify as backpacker rap – but J5 is a good distillation of everything *wrong* with backpacker rap, and showcase why the label was eventually meant to be offensive and a critique of its white fans. This album is a slog and a half, filled with pretension and holier-than-thou subjects mixed with strange, nearly conservative politics, all presented in a stilted way that sounds like it’s being delivered by a 50 year old man with an extensive Kangol collection. The beats are fine, and are the one non-traditionalist element in this whole album, thank god, but unless you physically preoccupy yourself with an activity that prevents you from reaching over and hitting the skip or pause button, I can’t imagine anyone actually listening to these songs by choice unless you’re new to hip-hop and/or were/are a backpacker in 2024 somehow, or one of those Zoomers into “alternative rap.” An unessential listen, and an obviously dated inclusion even within the context of the book.
Catchy beats, however, it is forgettable. With a 56 minute total run time, the album drags on, regardless of the range of six different voices. Loved the track featuring Nelly Furtado. Favourite track: A Day at the Races, Thin Line, Sum of Us

I have been a fan of Jurassic 5 since their debut on the scene, but in no way are they an essential band, nor is this an essential album. I don't understand why it is on this list. It's a decent little rap album, but it came and went like a fart in the wind with zero impact or importance. I'm not trying to bash it, I'm just very confused why it is on a list of 1001 "must listen" albums

Ooo an album/group I know almost nothing about! I've heard the name, I've heard of Cut Chemist, but I don't know that I ever fully listened to a Jurassic 5 album. My god this is 22 years old. In 2002, emo was about to blow up and take over my ears so I must have missed this. I don't like Chali 2na's voice. It's too much like a radio announcer? It sounds too polished and I think maybe the album in general sounds that way. It was also kind of preachy after awhile. Like it wanted me to be a better person but it was also like look how nice we can rap! I think there were maybe 2 fucks on the whole album? While I appreciate their messages in general, it felt a little too much like Schoolhouse Rock. Not sure how else to describe it. It generally didn't do it for me and that's I guess why I never listened to them much.
Maybe I'm not the best judge of rap/hip-hop, but I don't hear anything special about this. At least it has a message and isn't the mumbling crap that all these lames come out with nowadays. However, it's got nothing on Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Eminem, and a million other guys that can throw together some truly crazy rhyme schemes.

I was optimistic on this one from all the positive reviews. It was good but but great. I don't feel like hearing this had deepened my world view and understanding of the genre. The previous generation, tribe, digable planets, de la sol, etc, are at least as strong. Less known but more comparable was Boo Yaa Tribe, from a decade earlier. This was a good album but doesn't seem to take the genre further than the decades before. Liked but not love.
ok,, but formulaic.
Excellent rhythm and flow makes this one a lot more interesting and tolerable than most rap albums I've heard so far but it's still not a genre for me. A 2.5/5 from me for this kind of thing is practically a glowing recommendation. It's too long and gets same-y but I didn't dislike it. If I HAD to listen to rap I'd want it to be something like this.

Perfectly listenable album, but on an all-time-essentials list, an oddly pedestrian selection (even inside 2002 alone which saw the release of The Eminem Show, The Blueprint 2, Lord Willin', Fantastic Damage, and Legend of the Liquid Sword). Feels like a choice made by a hip-hop novice. Rating is for its inclusion, not its quality.

Notes from the plane: On the way to Melbourne from Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef was cool but I haven't showered in two days. Did I hear some Aussies at the end of "If You Only Knew"? I think if I had guessed the year this came out without knowing I would've guessed like 1988. It actually came out in 2002. It has a lot of elements of earlier rap though. Smooth non-controversial (mostly) lyrics, multiple rappers playing off of one another, that type of thing. Nelly Furtado shows up at one point though (to sing about being in the friend zone), I kind of forgot about her. It's alright, but I was starting to get bored before it was even halfway over. It's just not something I really want to listen to again, and very little stood out to break the monotony. I also HATE when there are children singing, which they did on "After School Special". "Remember His Name" is actually kind of good, but "his name is death" is a hilarious plot twist line to end it, incredibly cheesy. Just pretty "meh" to me overall, not much here I felt like I needed to hear. On a partial re-listen: Yeah basically nothing has changed, I added a couple of their more famous songs that I overlooked a bit but still "meh". Favorite song: Hey Other: If You Only Knew, Break, Remember His Name, What's Golden 1/23/24

First album I'm going into with no idea about what it is. From the cover I'm guessing some hip hop. Apparently that's what it is, "If you only knew" comes in with this flute and says 'we only tryin to give you something you ain't used to' which is appropriate for a person like me hearing the album. Not many other songs were relatable. I still don't know what to do with songs that have the N word, but "what's golden" was a grooving tune. If it wasn't evident yet, I'm not familiar with hip hop and the rhymes. Has Gene Simmons been seeing demons? Do swordfish rotate tracks or double back? I'm for sure out of my league 'like Jordan playing baseball' on this one. Favorite track "What's Golden" 2/5

I always thought Jurassic 5 were an 80s group, but turns out they released all their albums between 1998 and 2006. It is probably the "hi, my name is Louis, and I'm going to do a rap about this" style that makes me think 80s and is also quite easy to get along with. Safe, accessible, fine, but like a lot of hip hop albums, 20 minutes too long. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: What's Golden Date listened: 18/12/23

I saw J5 in college and have this cd. They put on an exciting live show, but as an album, this is mostly boring beats and cheesy hooks. Scratching my head on how this one found its way on the list. I've always seen these guys as watered down atcq/roots - and this is like their 2nd or 3rd best album - weird.
Much better than I thought it would be. Not really my thing, but at least it was decent listen.
First thought: is this Australian hip hop? *Checks Wikipedia* nope, Jurassic 5 are from LA. "Alternative hip hop". Okay. I can get into that. Think A Tribe Called Quest/De La Soul but with the tempo of a heartbeat. I didn't mind it. It wasn't blown out of the water awesome. Overall: 4/10

Look, I don't think it's that I hate rap. It's just that there's only so many tracks I can hear where the same beat and riff are repeated for ever while a series of blokes go on about how clever and/or hard they are over the top. I know there must be some better hip hop out there but this still isn't it. Yawn. I found myself shifting in my seat to the music though so it's got something!
