Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Some 80s things just sound too 80s and I can’t get past that. It’s not bad, it’s just got too many terrible 80s synthesized sounds for me. I would give it another try if someone could erase those sounds though.

I knew at least the intro to Money for Nothing (did not realize it contained the bad F word) and Walk of Life, which I swear was in a movie or TV show. I like Walk of Life and really liked the title track, but otherwise thought many of the songs dragged on wayyy too long.

Put me in a straight jacket. The 2nd half of this album was dire.

Man, this is a well-known record to test audio equipment for the production value on this guy. I am familiar and have listened to it a few times. But I'd rather test to a Steely Dan or something else.

Not into the f*ggot word being thrown around even if it was the 80s. Kinda lost interest.

Like Springsteen working on a 70’s porno. I really don’t like albums where the artists feel that the songs need to be crazy long. Especially if nothing happens. Album did have its bright spots, but didn’t do it for me.

Good guitarist but I never liked them much as a band. This was huge, almost unavoidable as half the tracks were singles. 'Private Investigations' and 'Romeo and Juliet' are good, shame they aren't on this album!

Heard of Dire Straits, hadn't listened to them. Had definitely heard radio edits of Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. It's a lot of steel guitar for something not considered country. Minus one star for the slur. I'll pass.

just kinda boring, a couple of nice bangers NNN

Can definitely tell this was made when it was with the choice of language... I like the jazzy aspect of some of the songs mixed with the soft rock. Very 80s. Idk feels kind of too patriotic for me

1. zo far auuay - 1 2. money for nothing - 1.5 3. life - 1.5 4. trick - 1.5 5. uuorry - 1 6. river - 1.5 7. ztrong - 1.5 8. uuorld - 0 9. brotherz - 2

Couldn’t get into it.

probably overly dramatic but this almost killed me

So this is clearly a big hitter. Expected to really like it, but struggled. Tilly also pointed out the use of the F-word in money for nothing. I tried to explain the irony, but the f-word is the f-word these days it seems. I was definitely too young for it to have been cool at school, rather it was something that geeky six-formers liked which made it impossibly wanky for my Ned’s atomic dustbin liking grunge-o-phile gang. They’re probably millionaires by now, although form IT and programming rather than appearing on MTV. Suspect they weren’t faggots either, or maybe they were. Oops.

Ha ha, so funny this has come up so quickly since I mentioned it in my review to Paul Simon Graceland. Please apply the same context here, I was force fed this as a kid. Funny hearing an album over 30yrs since whenever that great day the last time was. My reflections now are that it’s still godawful 80s blues rock, I didn’t realise how bad a singer Knoepfler is/was, I like a long song but bloody hell THESE songs drag, and the cultural appropriation voice on Ride across the river is rather embarrassing/amusing. But but but but but, can you bump an album up to a 3 solely for the opening riff to Money to Nothing (as much as I don’t want to like it given everything surrounding it, it brings a massive smile to my face). …… …… Nope, turns out I can’t.

Not quite as bad as I expected. The light-hearted songs are best. The serious ones sound pretentious.

Pas de souvenir après le weekend c'est mauvais signe

So far, it has an uplifting start, similar vibes to the start of 80s movies. 2nd song had a a mysterious opening that gradually builds up to that one song. I was expecting something new and cool not that song💀. Shit sounds like the Home Depot theme💀🛠️. 3rd song sounds very uplifting, but very generic, like a normal 80s radio song. This shit ain’t cold chisel it’s frozen hammer. 4th song had a jazzy start featuring a trumpet as its main focus. They then introduce a drum kit but still keeps it funky, so far this is the best song on the album. Lyrics kick in but the vibe still stays the same. 5 mins in the song and it’s starting to get a bit repetitive. I feel like the songs on the album are drawn out. I feel like I’ve heard the same part 100 times. The song was good at the start but did not progress or the progression was too small for me to notice. The 5th song has a mellow start. The start is not repetitive and slowly progresses. Four mins in and I find the progression is way to slow and unnoticeable that instead of it feeling like yay a new part it just feels like it’s the same and therefore makes it feel repetitive. Please just hurry up and end now, it had no reason to be 8 minutes long, Jesus . 6th song in, this album is kinda meh, nothing has really stood out or grabbed my attention except the 2nd song but thst was only because of its popularity elsewhere and me noticing that. Bro this song just sounds like you’ve left the tv on afk in a jungle part of a game for the past 20 mins and it’s just slowly driving you insane in the background while you do something else. 7th song has a cowboyish start. Who do they think they are, please just stick to what you do good. Okay this actually grabs my attention for once but I think like every other song it will be repetitive. Instead of reviewing this album, I could’ve reviewed any of the others I missed. Okay the riff is already getting a bit old, at least this song is average length, so far this might be the best. 8th song has a funky bass line at the start, I would be happy but this album is too long and is gettin kinda old, I’m not really excited anymore. The album itself is not long but the songs repeating like 5 times and then next song makes it feel a lot longer. As predicted, the song got kinda old and I didn’t focus on it for the later half of it. 9th song has a moody intro, but it doesn’t really get me excited after the mid-ness of every other song after their intros. Been so sick of this album I didn’t pay attention to this song 💀. Once again, like all the other songs, it is too long. Final thoughts, was too long and drawn out. Nothing really interested me. 5/10

first song I've definitely heard before on Officeworks radio, the album is giving me heavy 80s pop rock vibes I'm not sure what the official genre name is but its probably just brit rock. first song is wayy too long tbh. track two: im surprised this isnt called i want my own tv. lyrically havent been impressed yet. that opening riff is iconic af and probably an improvement over track one. makes me think of the home depot theme for some reason. this is definitely better than track 1 but i think its been overplayed for me personally. i think the cowbell is what really gives it the tradie vibe. classic 8os rock slow fade out 3: the electric organ at the start is really cool. but again this song has been overplayed for me, specifically either on the officeworks radio or in bunnings advertisements because i cant shake the tradie associations. thats not a rip on it btw its still nice but. have to admit this one is pretty catchy. 4: the jazzy undertones at the start are really nice with that melodic piano, the trumpet and slow hi hat. so far my favourite song. when the sax kicks in the song becomes really nice. to be honest i am not paying the most attention to the lyrics because im doing homework but they seem better on this song. I wasnt expecting this from the album 5: this one also starts off sorta ballad-y and more relaxed with the shakers and the guitar arpreggios are cool. this track is a whopping 8 minutes hope its worthwhile. so far its an ok track but it isnt getting me excited about anything. just sorta a mellow 6 minutes which is fine but not going in my playlist. this album feels very pub-rock very cold chisel 6:wtf is with the kabuki ahh flute at the start. i love it. the weird percussion that sounds electric but bordeline acoustic is cool. this song gets to the meat and potatoes straight away. the trumpets once the verse picks up are cool. song closes the way it starts and the crickets are cool. solid but i lost interest in the middle a little 7: western ahh guitar at the start. got me walking in saloons and starting fights and shit. the beat drops are cool but overall this album isnt my usual taste, its a perfectly good album just not for me. honestly forgot this song 8: this ones aight too, i dont have much new to add. 9: the opening with the storms and such is really cinematic before the melody kick in sounding very western again. i like this one though. the choir stuff going on in the back is cool. the electric organs around the 6 minute mark are really cool. and we go for the classic 80s rock fade out Favourite tracks: Your latest trick, Brother in arms, so far away Least favourite: Money for nothing (controversial take but personally ive heard it too much) overall 5/10

There's a little nostalgia going on with the first few tracks, but this is just so bland.

Each song is unique. Some of them are way too long. Tracks one and two are especially tedious at the end. The extended repetition at the end of each song is uncomfortably long. That said there are a handful of songs (track 4) that are very different than I expected and interesting as a result.

Lots of big hits, seems like a pivotal album but not my thing

MP: "Pub band get up and dance / 70s softcore porn music." "I can't imagine anyone like it, even Dire Straits fans." "Miami Vice." "Soulless." DP: Walk of Life guilty pleasure, Money for Nothing somewhat hate. Either too simple and happy-clappy or too indulgent and lacking structure (see Your Latest Trick). Questionable lyrics (see ibid). Tracks way longer than they deserve to be. Did Knopfler forget how to play a guitar solo? Indulgence of 80s production without the excess and bombast and melody to pull it off. Poorly advised/conceived sax. The Man's Too Strong starts off alright -- nice acoustic and a bit of vocal melody. Chorus has some questionable distorted electric moments, but its forgivable. Whole song feels like a country pastiche with an occasional amp. Brothers in Arms -- starts off moody and 80s with some nice synth and thunder, then Knopfler gets a bit onanistic with his guitar and harmonica. At least the synths are decent, although its just soft pads... In conclusion -- misadventure.

Has that 1 song

meh 2.5/5

The first 3 tracks are perfect, but they are followed up by a list of boring songs.

Inte lyssnat alls på Dire Straits. Ganska tråkigt sound från 80-talet. Tycker inte direkt att någon låt sticker ut. Saxofon i Your Latest Trick drar ner betyget.

The album is timeless, but too pleasing for me, and unfortunately it doesn't even come close to the debut album with its inspiring melodies and rhythms

Title track is the only one worth listening to. Rest is boring dad-rock or overplayed hits. “Your latest trick” isn’t terrible.

Long and ponderous in places, symphonic in others. Overall, far too long.

This is so soft rock I felt the lead drain from my pencil and I’m worried I’ll never rise to the occasion again. Couple of very iconic tracks on here, possibly overplayed, and there is some interesting moments but theyre surrounded by beige knitwear. His voice is canny, sometimes a bit Springsteeny. Hated Your Latest Trick. Why Worry was a pointless waste of time. Lost 1/2 a star for possibly making me impotent. A total flop on of a record. 1.5

Straight up snooze fest literally built on one guitar riff.

I really liked this more when I was younger. It has some good hits but the rest is just average dad rock.

1985 me gives this 5 stars. 2024 me found it boring and plodding. He needed someone to edit all that noodling out. I still like their first two albums but there's a reason why I skip any of these songs on a playlist.

Лучшая песня - Brothers In Arms.

Some fun musical moments but regardless of the intent they just say faggot too many times for me.

Pretty cool Not really my vibe

Not a fan of Dire Straits

Not my favorite…. just a little boring… money for nothing is the best tho

I get that Knopfler is technically good at guitar. But there are a few things I don’t like about this. It’s cornball. And I can’t believe I never noticed the f-slur being used in Money For Nothing! Not cool, but it was a different time. I’m just not into this. That Kenny G-style clarinet solo was excruciating too. Glad this is over.

It was fine. I had problems paying attention through the whole album.

Its a reasonably good album with some nice hits, but the Dire Straights genre isn't really my favorite. I don't even know what to call it, maybe smooth rock of the 80's. The 80's has some silly iconic sound effects that are present in many tracks. The album didn't really suck me in, and I found myself zoning out just waiting for it to be over at some point.

A pretty lame, uninspired album. The only good songs are the guitar-forward ones, which I can't believe is a big ask on a Dire Straits album. The only 3 things keeping this from being a one-star album is the riff from Money For Nothing, the song Walk of Life for being catchy, and One World for some much-welcome guitar stuff. It's crazy that this album is considered a classic.

Not my taste

46/100

this one barely stands out in my memory

1-3: bangers 4-on: ??? slow. no bangering at all.

Mmmm wasn't all too stirred by this. Nothing particularly bad (some lyrics aside), nothing particularly good. Straight 2.5/5

Oh ok I have heard Walk of Life before... but idk if that's good or bad... Overall it's ok but tainted by some slurs :\

-never heard of this album or band either! -so far away is a little boring for me personally -this isn’t bad rock it just isn’t my thing really -last couple of songs have been a bit boring to me ngl -no offense like the lyrics aren’t bad the guys voice is average but the songs are kinda BORING!!!!! -eh overall it was a fine album. the music wasn’t Bad but i didn’t really like it, so it’s getting a 2 for me

Avoided this when I was 15, it isn't any better now - Sting is the best thing on the album. Very worrying how this sold so many CD players considering how miserable it is. Good closing track though

The only songs I was familiar with before this were Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. The rest of this was much more mellow than I expected based on those two songs. Kind of in between experimental and classic rock stuff. Pretty mediocre. But you can’t hate on Money for Nothing.

Wow, guess I’ve not been paying attention and/or have only heads censored versions of the lyrics of Money for Nothing. Gross.

Eh this was a 2.5 for me. My parents used to love them wayyyy back and with the 80s cultural context this definitely has that sound and vibe. I liked the guitar tone and riffs but holy shit they beat you to death with that riff. So far away is probably the standout for me but that might be because I’ve heard that riff in a couple of remixes? Or like TikTok’s? Not sure The usage of “f*ggot” was oof, idk it just got hard for me to think/look past it. For the two songs after it basically I was zoned thinking about the cultural context and homophobia back then which left a bad taste in my mouth/bad ring in my ears? It gave me like country bluesy vibes and I did enjoy certain moments and maybe there’s a song or two I’d listen back to but I don’t know if it’s a “oh you know what I feel like spinning this afternoon? Dire straits!” lol that would be the day.

Hmmm I'm not sure about this album

It was fine. Sounded like a local band at a county musikfest.

Heard before: yes Money For Nothing is a nasty little ditty that shows how hard satire is. Ostensibly, it’s a critique of celebrity, but there is not a single incisive line about stardom. They get women? They get money? They don’t work hard? Instead, the song ends up just insulting the intelligence of the poor jamokes who work all day. It’s the perfect 80s song - the rock star saying, “I got mine, ha ha, you don’t, fuck off!” Anyway, I like Dire Straits, but this is my least favorite of theirs. I guess it’s better than most of the rest of what was on the radio at the time. Oh well. Top tracks: Why Worry, Ride Across the River, So Far Away

2/5 not bad per say but it doesn't really tingle my balls. The second half is definitely better than the first. Slowish? so probably a morning listen. Okay listen but won't go back to it again. Fav song: Walk of Life

Not bad or anything, but once it hits why worry? The rest of the album is interminable and I don't feel like I HAD to hear this album before I died.

Album seems wayyyy too long (55 minutes) for a 9 track album. So far only enjoyed 2 out of the 9 songs: “So Far Away” and “Your Latest Trick”. Not my cup of tea Update: the title track isn’t that bad as well. Still just not my cup of tea 4/10

Don’t like this album. Walk of life is a good song though

Idk man. I just don’t think they can make songs over 4 minutes entertaining enough to justify their length.

Minimalism does not work with any of their overarching genres. Not their fault but synths were a bad idea. Couldn’t finish.

Wow. I know I've always hated Money for Nothing, but I didn't realise all of their songs were that terrible. I feel harsh giving this 1*, given the utter dross that have achieved my 1* rating, but it's really not far off. Lucky escape.

Inte riktigt min grej, trots att jag blev positivt överraskad av albumet. Många av låtarna var onödigt långa. Korkade texter och irriterande sångröst. 2,5 av 5.

Exactly what I expected, fine - no better

some outstanding atmospheric moments and guitar lines. this record is exhausting. too british.

Walk of Life CARRIES this thing. Everything else was either too long or felt too long.

Not my favorite- there’s one popular song in there. The thing I do like is the incorporation of the saxophone. Wouldn’t choose to listen to this.

A couple of old songs I remembered but overall I didn’t like it. Lead singers voice kinda makes all songs too similar. Wouldn’t buy it.

Pretty dire

Bit boring

A waste of some great riffs, maybe a 3 star without the slur

Not sure i quite get it - seemed pretty run of the mill

Album was really only saved by the long instrumental sections of chill elevator music. Not something I'd look forward to listening to unless it's in the background

Looks like they blew their load with the first trio then post nut clarity kicked in and they turned in a flaccid rest of the remainder of the album, hardly worthy of a best albums list and won't be coming back again.

I am firmly in the unique window of having been too young for Dire Straits. My parents were too old for them, I was 7 when Brothers in Arms came out, and then they kind of disappeared for years after that. It's not that I never visited other bands from that era, but you can't catch up to everything. I know the singles, of course. The main thing that surprised me is that other than those, this is a fairly plodding, introspective record. It feels like they trojan horsed their way into the MTV Generation with a couple of catchy videos and then saddled them with a bunch of sad bastard songs on the rest of the album.

i dont know if i would listen to it a lot butttt i think its so groovy??? so nice, 80s vibes! im soooo tired of listening your lastest trick on the radio PLEASE ok, it comes off strong but now its not as nice personally? i can feel a lot of influences from reggae and some latin american references that are cool, but again personally im not a big fan of the use. have some bangers but honestly...

Dire straits First song sounds like Tom Petty giving up. He’s a good guitar player I guess but his songwriting and performance is not interesting to me “Money for Nothing” hard to not hear the Weird Al lyrics in my head from UHF. Prefer the ”little clampett” version. “Walk of Life” good hook on the organ but the rest of the song is not good. Album is stacked with some of the best musicians of the 80’s - Omar hakim, brecker brothers, Michael manieri,Sting, Tony levin Hard to believe this was such a successful record. All of these songs are too long 2.5

Honestly a really well done record with interesting harmony and cool tones. But just a real drag to listen to

I did not care for this

Couple of shiners amidst one of the most boring albums.

Cheesy but not good cheesy

I like some DS but this screams lowest common denominator and 80s kitch. Pop pap rock which is is a bit lazy at times. Catchy but banal.

I remember going through a big Dire Straits period in high school. Lets see how its held up since then. So Far Away is about as boring as Dire Straits get IMO. Not a bad song necessarily, but its a boring ballady pop number that got a ton of radio play. About as sterilized as it can get. Album takes a slow left turn into Money for Nothing, which leads in with one of the slowest yet most iconic song intros in rock history. A minute of "I want my MTV" over some SOYCD style instrumental that gives way to a man playing drum loops like a madman in the distance, then the floor drops out into a very polished guitar riff + 80s quintessential bassline / synth solo. Man I used to love this song. Lyrics have not held up particularly well; more references to "faggot" than I remembered. Still a fine song I suppose, but the cheese factor is pretty goddamned high. Walk of Life is another silly 80's number. Its gotta swingy little cadence about it and is catchy as hell. Tuned out for the mid-section; kind of boring. Ride Across the River stands out as a slow slightly-dubby number and pan-flute. One of the jammier on the album no doubt. Kind of boring, but mood setting as well. All said, I would go 2/5 on this one. Walk of Life and Money for Nothing stand out, but otherwise I find this to be a pretty generic, processed 80s pop-rock album that doesn't command much focus.

I heard great things about this band, so I was excited, but i felt let down. I liked money for nothing, but the other songs just didn’t hit. They were long and I found myself bored. I don’t know if I’m just not smart enough to find the genius in these songs, but it’s definitely a 2/5

Tiedät, mistä biiseistä pidän (oikeina hetkinä). Mutta en halua, että Mark Knopfler välittää minulle omia "fiiliksiään". En luota niihin, en luota tyyppiin, enkä jaksa kuunnella kuuden minuutin maalailua.

- Some nice chill 80s vibes - Doesn't do a ton for me but I respect it - Some nice variety of sounds

I get it, but it's not for me. Wouldn't listen again.

Far too many songs that were not spectacular in the least and are far too long. Dire Straits belongs in the same category as Steely Dan for me... don't need it.

Some of the songs are overlong, it’s too smooth, but some good tunes and MK is always a great guitarist.

Album is very top heavy. Starts out fairly promising, and Walk of Life is an absolute heater, but it runs out of gas pretty quickly. Brothers In Arms has almost 250 million streams on Spotify as of this writing, but I can't really understand why, as I found it to be pretty boring. Surprisingly, I found the s/t to be far more engaging. Standouts: So Far Away, Walk of Life, The Man's Too Strong.

This was really boring. I don’t remember anything about it.

Steely Dan for dumb guys.

For a rock album there are an awful lot of ballads on here. Felt dated. Best songs at the beginning and at the end.

I never understood the appeal of Dire Straits. Middle of the road stuff, or below. Is there any real difference between this and say, Bryan Adams, John Mellencamp, Supertramp, or Foreigner? All inoffensive, all boring, all ignorable.

Great performances and top-tier production longing for better material.

Jotenkin ärsytti kuunnella. Varmaan liian monta kertaa radioista kuultuja biisejä enkä ikinä muutenkaan oo kovin fanitellu. Nimikkobiisi vielä kuitenkin hyvä

Good sound, hooks, polish. How, erm, exciting. Standout Tracks: Money for Nothing, Walk of Life

It’s a classic, you know, Money For Nothing and all. Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitar player, but I found this album was just kind of boring. It’s one you play in the evening, or when you’re having a chill morning. Definitely not something to get excited about though.

I don't know what this was I didn't like it

This album could have been 30 minutes, but if you’re into the band I get it. Instrumentals were really enjoyable, but so so repetitive 2.5

Pretty music with some nice smoother jazz, just not quite for me

couldnt make it through the record. songs were too long, kind of boring, songs never got exciting.

Überproduzierte, schlecht gealterte Platte einer guten Band, die außer dem Titelsong, Money For Nothing und Your Latest Trick nur verzichtbare Banalitäten zu bieten hat. Ein Ärgernis.

I've often pondered why some music is labelled MOR. Whilst this album was playing I had visions of the band literally being stuck in the middle of the road, with lots of motorists driving either side not letting them cross. But sometimes you gotta be brave and take a chance, have some faith that the audience will go with you. Alas, it wasn't to be, and 30 years later the band is still stuck in the Middle -of - the - Road. Just waiting. And waiting.

My dad played this a lot, I recall liking it until I became a teenager, then strongly disliking it. Re-listening now, great guitar work and production, but still invoked a strangely sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach. Mixed emotions. Is there such a thing as anti-nostalgia? 2.5

Lame. 80’s were so bad across genres

ai uzpiso biski, labai ilgos dainos

The sleeve has a lovely pastel colour scheme. It matches the very safe, pastel, tone of the album. Its all perfectly nice, but it's difficult to imagine anything with less edge. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Walk Of Life Date listened: 16/01/23

I feel like this album isn’t very cohesive, with none of the songs matching the title and sonically and lyrically having no connection. The singers voice lowkey got on my nerves a little bit and hearing him drop the f slur 3 times in one song didn’t help lol.

Boring shit dad rock

En del fina melodier man önskar någon annan framförde. Making movies är mycket bättre och låter mindre vitt vin.

who knew their dead famous MTV song was banging on about faggots. never knew they loved irish stew that much. probably the most interesting thing about them is some extremely mild controversy that wasn't an issue when they said it. this album doesn't have sultans of swing or the romeo and juliet one so it leads me to think we're gonna have to endure that album at some point too.

If this was a team in the controversial FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar, it'd be Costa Rica.

Money for Nothing is still a bitching track, even if it has aged poorly lyrically in several levels. Overall most of the album is very "meh" and I'm a bit oeroleced how this album was so well received.

Prefs: Money for Nothing, Walk of Life Moins pref: One World

This album is weird. Certainly, when you see Dire Straits come up as your album of the day, the reaction is more of an eye roll than anything else. We all know their hits, and Dire Straits is fine. But you listen to this album and the first three tracks are well known hits that you realize rock harder than you remember or expected, and then after that it just falls off a cliff in to pretty sub-standard easy listening fare. Just very uninteresting overall. Weird album, from a weird band that I honestly don't know much about at all. Money for Nothing totally rips though.

Decent but forgettable

A couple of radio hits and a bunch of super slow synth rock. Meh.

Meh 6/10

Meh...

M'n pa draaide dit vroeger veel. Wist hij veel. Vanwegen de nostalgie die het boven bracht nog een magere 2 sterren, maar eigenlijk kan dit echt niet.

I fucking hate classic rock. There are some decent songs though.

The main singer seems to 'talk' more than sing in my opinion. I already knew 'walk of life' and 'money for nothing'. 'Why Worry' is soft and I like the guitar. The album has grown on me whilst listening to it - especially the guitar parts. Just not a fan of the lead singers voice. Probably 4/10. I like a couple of songs but probably won't listen to the album again.

Their 1st albums were nice. This one is terrible. Some over the top songs with Stadiumrock. Overdone. Beatles would have told them : act naturally. Some good songs but overall 2 stars for showing up in the studio.

My dad was a big Dire Straits fan. I think that killed a little bit of the coolness for me. I get that Knopfler is regarded as a master of the guitar, and I can appreciate that, but not to the level of following "Daily Updates on Mark Knopfler's Health Condition" on Facebook. I just have a hard time getting into this. The giant f-slur in "Money for Nothing" doesn't help either. (Full Disclosure: as much as I love Jewel, I avoid "Pieces of You" for the same reason.)

I've seen this LP around and I know it has sold a lot, but I've never listened to it. The first track I found lame and MOR radio-targeted. The following 2 tracks I've never liked much, but that could be because they were so over-played. I find it interesting that in 2011, Money For Nothing was banned in Canada because it uses the word "faggot", even though it's poking fun at people who refer to others (like Knopfler) as faggots. I guess the CBSC are the same guys who banned Barenaked Ladies because of their lascivious band name. The next 2 songs are made for Loblaws, condiments aisle. You get where I'm going with this... I'm adding a point because there appears to be some nice guitar work.

Boring, droany, far too long, awful vocals, horrendous lyrics. A few good songs, acoustics good, has a distinct sound but tainted by Knopfler’s tone deaf voice. 2/5.

Brothers in Yawns. I won't give this the long review and multiple listens it (probably) deserves. But this elevator-rock really does nothing for me. 'Brothers in Arms' and 'Money For Nothing' are great tracks in their own right. So there's 2 stars for this album. But 'Walk Of Life' is just annoying, songs like 'Why Worry' and 'Ride Across The River' are nothing more than snoozefests without any depth. 'The Man's Too Strong' and 'One World' are unnecessary tracks.

Listening through this whole thing was a slog... I used to love Dire Straits.

Highlights: Money For Nothing Walk Of Life Artwork: 4,5 / 10 Rating: 4 / 10

This depressingly, kinda blows, money for nothing is fine and the title track is a banger but everything else felt like filler

I was much more of a Golden Grahams kind of kid. But my little brother, Steve loved Chex, Wheat Chex, Rice Chex, Raisin and Wheat Chex. Steve ate Chex cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My parents must've spent a fortune on Chex cereal in those days. One time I was invited to go roller skating at the local roller rink and but my parents didn't have enough money for me to go ... because mom spent it all on groceries ... including 12 boxes of Chex cereal!! Then I heard this Money for Nothing song and decided I'd play my guitar on MTV, because if I did that, I'd get money for nothing and get my Chex for free. The rest of the album sucked.

The first three songs are justified classics, but it sure does fall off after that, getting trapped in some kind of lounge jazz (or yacht jazz?) slumber until "The Man's Too Strong" attempts to save things. Side notes: -Dire Straits is a terrific band name, though not sure the band is quite worthy of it -Didn't recall that the original "Money for Nothing" included... those... lyrics. -Lead Mark Knopfler apparently did the score for "The Princess Bride" -Those middle tracks were really awful. That's not a side note, that's the main point here, and they are more responsible for this album's score than the good stuff.

Their Spoitfy profile says "self-consciously mature rock 'n' rollers," which may be the most singularly uninviting musical proposition I've ever read. Luckily, that's not all they are. Hooks, tunes, SFX--all catchy crassness they're not above. But there's no ignoring their midtempo sobriety, which is almost truculent in its insistence on poise. There's also no ignoring that this gets a hell of a lot less catchy on the second half, which is the bigger problem.

yknow I woulda enjoyed this a lot more if not for the liberal use of the f slur. great production tho

Bruh I Farm's

Listenable but dull. Never really grabbed me. And I've always disliked the song, "Money for Nothing", so there's that. Sorry, Mark. Didn't add.

The MySpace of albums. Not only does it not hold up anymore, but you can't believe it ever did.

Not really vibing with it. Forgot to listen to it until today on the way to work. Money for Nothing has a great riff but I forgot about the F bomb in it. Some classic songs but two that I've definitely heard way too often

Money for Nothin’ riff still slaps for being a kinda dumb song. Guitars overall are pretty damn clean and tasty. The synths and extra instruments often feel out of place initially, but end up working out really well in the end. The closer was a snore. Overall not bad bad, but the singles are the highlights. This band does not sound like they’re from England, whatsoever, figured these dudes were from Florida. It’s aight.

never really liked Dire Straits

Wow. This did not age well. I remember when this first came out and everyone had fancy new cd players and this was the go to album. Money for Nothing still sounds great and Brothers in Arms closes out the album well, but the rest - just sounds flat and boring. They have far better albums.

love money for nothing, but was surprised how much I didn't like the rest of the album. the songs were fine. slower than i was expecting. Money For Nothing isn't necessarily a fast song, but there's something about it's.... swagger, that the rest of the album just didn't really have.

You know, fuck Dire Straits.

A solid meh. Not sure what this album was trying to accomplish and seemed aimless.

Even duller than I expected it to be.

Love some "Brothers in Arms" but now having listened to some of the other songs it's a little offensive.

Two well known songs. I have never been a fan of Money For Nothing.

Dire Straits sound much better live.

Couple of good riffs in what is otherwise a brain numbing boring album

Great moments filled up with bang average filler tracks. 2/5

The Dire Straits should’ve said “you’re so far away from me” one more time — I don’t think we got it the first 50 times in the opening track. I like the message behind Money for Nothing, but don’t like the offensive slang — also these songs are really slow and repetitive. The sax in Your Latest Trick is really nice. These songs are SO long. I admit the instrumentals are good, but I don’t have the patience lol. Why Worry would be a good song if you cut out 4-5 minutes of it 😂 The Brothers in Arms title track has great lyrics, but again why is it so long?? Overall: the album was ok. The songs, particularly the instrumentals, were WAY too long for my taste. Some lyrics were beautiful, some not so much.

Some relaxing/smooth listening jam songs/riffs. Still don’t love their hits. Maybe money for nothing.

first song: not awful, but boring. ofc i recognize the second song. always fun to listen to slurs in hit songs. third song is another popular one. fourth song: ive heard this one too, and its the first one i like. saxophone is so good. fifth song is okay too, almost like a lullaby. sixth song is pretty nice, wasnt expecting this reggae feel lol. this album must be super popular because i feel like ive heard most of these songs on the radio. dont care about the seventh track. eight song is okay. lets see if the title track is good or nah. i wasnt feeling the buildup but it turned out okay kinda. well im done. it was okay i guess, didnt feel strongly about anything here, didnt love or hate anything.

Not my style

I got almost nothing out of this. Granted my brain turned off after the f-slur in track 2

Pleasant enough listen but a bit too of its time - last few songs went nowhere

A couple of great great songs!

VERY 1985. I feel like I'm in an 80s drama. Now we're in smooth jazz? This album feels all over the place. Eh. Not really my jam.

iunno tbh

Slowwwww. But could be worse.

Songs too long, album too long. Turns out sometimes production can kill a good song.

Has some nostalgic impact, but just TOO polished to mean anything.

Listened a few days late. Album is extremely cheesy rock, but the riff on Money for Nothing still slaps, first bench press vibes.

I think my problem with Dire Straits has always been the lack of dynamic or structural variation in their tracks. 'Money For Nothing' takes a good riff and then repeats it on end for 8 minutes with few changes, and that just doesn't make for an interesting or engaging song. Also the whole back half of this album sounds like the soundtrack to a chintzy 80s Tom Cruise romance flick verging on porno territory.

A bit annoying really

boomer rock. dire straits is not for me, and while i am proud of myself for sitting through this, i found it so very very boring i was nearly sent into a rage. love this synths, hate the everything else. 3/10. all points awarded for synth. points deducted for being the soundtrack of a generation that decimated the economy.

Plodding, dull. How was this ever a phenomenon?

Vibes are like what if Jimmy Buffet was in Steely Dan. I do not like it.

…will this shameless string of 80s music-clichés ever end? I fear it won‘t. I‘m trapped inside a insidious plane of existence called Brothers In Arms.

I don't like this. 1.5/5.

I really tried to be open minded but I could not enjoy it. Some of it just felt uninteresting, much of it actively annoyed me. The vocal delivery feels so much like a Dylan impression, but without all the poetry. The guitar work feels a bit smart and tidy to me. I guess my overfamiliarity with the singles doesn't help. I'm sure it's excellent, it's just not for me right now

I don't understand why these guys are on this list -- twice! "So Far Away" is okay, as is "Money for Nothing," though I hadn't caught the casual homophobia before (yay!), but mostly I was skipping tracks impatiently. So much of their sound feels like they're fighting against falling asleep and barely winning.

80s music just doesn’t do it for me. The sound is too echoey and synthetic, which I understand was part of the technological innovation of the time, but it’s not for me. I mostly just wanted to stop listening, but I gave the album a chance and finished it.

Most overrated album of the 80th

Sandals and socks music

So Far Away is kinda like the song I imagine every single divorced dad listening to in his town car on the way to pick up his kids for his weekend from the woman he's still in love with. Money For Nothing is like the rant he goes on to his kids as he drives them to his house. And he wonders why they don't even want to spend the weekends there. Overall the rest of the album could be made fun of in the exact same way

Bloated album for fat dad rockers So, I had this on some kind of rip off cassette when I was 16. I must have listened to it two or three times I suppose, and it obviously has a couple of tunes which made their mark after the band exploited the commercial opportunities that Live Aid produced (not the only ones who did so fwiw). But even those couple of tracks aren't that good when you listen to them now. And the rest? Pretty much filler I'm afraid. Bloated. You can imagine the conversation in the pub: Yeah, that Mark Knopfler, he's a fabulous guitarist you know Oh yes, he's as good as Clapton you know Well, perhaps not the same style, but... Boring fucking shite that fat dads with their pints and their mildly racist views no doubt love Honestly, it's not even close to being Dire Straits best album

FUCK NO 1

This album didn’t do much for me. Kind of meandered track to track with nothing grabbing me, musically or lyrically.

Elevator music. Urgh

Nope, not this one. This was the album where Dire Straits and I parted ways. Writing songs with Sting is never a good idea (except for your bank balance).

I've somehow managed to never hear any of these songs before, and man, I miss the me that I used to be. This album is boring as hell. Each song is at least 3 minutes too long. There's unnecessary homophobic language in Money for Nothing (and no, I don't care if they're writing from the POV of a character; in this time and place it fed into society-wide homophobic tropes, particularly considering the AIDS epidemic, so it was unnecessary). That's not to say it's all bad: I do like the saxophone in Your Latest Trick. But the rest is pretty dreadful - very trite, cloying, wannabe-meaningful trash. If you like the easy listening genre; overly long, meandering songs; or defending regressive attitudes, then this might be your cup of tea. If not, then you actually have good taste.

Music for people who don’t like music. Very tedious.

dad rock good instrumentals at times vocals not the best

🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️

Talk about Dire (hehe) this is truly an awful awful album, riddled with inexplicable homophobia. Feels dated even for its time. Really struggled to to trudge through it tbh.

Nah nu mi-o papcut

I wondered if the nostalgia value might increase the rating, but sadly no, it’s bad…

Bored. Couldn't get through it

Comencem malament

Yeah, rough to get through. Not a fan

Sorry not for me.

Did not enjoy

I refuse to listen to this. I will never again be tormented by a DS album again.

My friend used run a hi-fi shop in the 80’s and used to dread Saturdays. All the dull hi-fi buffs would come in to hear the new Kef or Mission speakers and bring this on CD, I laughed. Today I had to listen to it, fantastic musicianship totally wasted on the dullest pile of shite created! 54 minutes of meaningless twaddle, 5 plus minute tracks that went absolutely fcuking nowhere. I will happily die before I put myself through this guff again. 0 stars is too high.

Didn’t finish

Why do they sound like they're on Valium? I only knew two songs going in and want to go back to that time in Sorry dozed off and crashed my car. Brb.

this one felt just so incredibly blah to me. definitely not something i would reach for. even the singles (So Far Away) are boring and - dare i say - cheesy in a way that's not nostalgic to me. The only track I kinda like is The Man's Too Strong, fun lil country lane with bold guitar and the vocals sound more Bob Dylan-y on this one.

I remember reading a (possibly apocryphal) story that this sold more copies on CD than there were actual CD players when it initially came out. That was meant to illustrate how much of a phenomenon the album was, but I choose to believe it’s more indicative of the impacts of lead poisoning on boomers and gen x.

Me cago en la puta no pueden poner algo divertido. Acaba de empezar y ya me aburrí. O sea que está bien pero bro no

I didn’t get it. Even as I tried I just didn’t get it :(

I was going to give this collection of tepid, boring, over-long soft rock snoozers 2 stars for, at the very least, not being unlistenable. But hearing the uncensored, slur-filled version of Money For Nothing, a song I already disliked, has earned this a spiteful 1 star.

Had some bits, the rest was super dull

I can see the band's smug faces as they play this to their adoring hoards of muso male fans. The lyrics suck. Just because you can play guitar doesn't mean you should. Turgid.

My first thought about ¨Brothers in Arms¨ is that I’m going to hate it. It sounds so 80s, and all I know of Dire Straights is ¨Sultans of Swing,¨ which is lame at the best of times. ¨So Far Away¨ sounds like a bad mix of Tom Petty and late-career Bob Dylan, with all the horrible production the 80s has to offer. After almost five minutes of the opener, the end seems ¨so far away from me.¨ See what I did there? The music isn’t unpleasant, as such, just unbelievably dull and disgustingly 80s. ¨Money for Nothing¨ is even worse, adding synths and talking about refrigerators in what I imagine was written as a screed against consumerism but sounds like something playing at a Target. Upon looking up Dire Straits I discovered they’re from England, which explains a lot. Sometimes things get lost in translation, and sounding superficially American is a strike against, not for. By the time I’ve arrived to ¨Your Latest Trick,¨ with it’s cloying jazz saxophone and it’s made-for-a-lounge or adult contemporary radio, I want to throw myself out of the 12th floor office I work at. There is no excuse to make music this bland, this bad, this soulless. The songs blend together into a cauldron of awfulness. As a coworker said, it’s the kind of music you’d hear playing at Chilli’s or Applebee’s. Best song: ¨So Far Away¨

I feel bad about this because Mark Knopfler seems like a good dude and a good guitarist, but I really hated this album. Schlocky, shmaltzy, 80s pop. Ick.

Ultimately boring.

I am unfortunately just not a fan of this. Could not wait for it to be over.

Exceptionally run of the mill with incredibly dull lyrics. I accidentally restarted the song Why Worry with like 15 seconds left and I almost had a nervous breakdown before realizing I could just skip it. No one knew how to make boring music like the 80s artists. The only reason I considered making this is a 2 is because I see the promise in "brothers in arms", but it's still hamstrung by the limitations of band's writing ability. I mean, the best verse of the song rhymes "worlds" with "world". 1/5

I'd forgotten about this album for decades. I'm sure I last heard this on a road trip growing up. It was forgettable then. It's still forgettable garbage now. I'm not even sure I need to use my "f-slur rule" to justify giving this a 1, it's just that bland.

Singer sounded as bored as I felt. Occasionally interesting music cannot save this delivery or lyrics.

Don’t understand why people listen to this

I mean it’s dad rock.

Weak ass, boring shit

not for me at all. sounds so 80s and not the kind of 80s music i lile

I don't like this album. In some ways I hate this album despite the fact that everyone in the band is talented some insanely so and the music on this album is entirely listenable. So, what gives? I don't know TBH everything about 'Brothers in Arms' works well on paper but when I listen to it - it's just really boring to me sometimes obscenely so. So, what gives? I don't know really outside of 'Money for Nothing' the entire album just blends together and while it would be misleading to call it bad in any way I honestly enjoy 'Brothers in Arms' the best when it's not playing & I can just look at the photo of the pretty silver guitar that serves as the albums cover. P.S. We have all met people that seem to be indifferent to music. All music. People that when asked who their favorite bands are resort to saying things like, "I just listen to whatever is on the radio." I never understood those people because to me music is a huge chunk of my life hell to me music is life and frankly, I always looked down on them a little but what if to them all music sounds like 'Brother in Arms' does to me? How does it sound to me? Well-constructed background noise at best something to hear when conversations come to a standstill. That would be awful to say the least, but I wouldn't know what I was missing out on as music would have all the appeal of watching a game of chess on TV- so maybe I was wrong to look down on such people - I mean I would never date them but 'Brothers in Arms' made me understand them yo-yos after all these years and come to the conclusion that they ain't dumb - that's just the way they do it. You know?

as though Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen formed a band when the 80s were in full swing

Boring

Never liked this band and this album is a wishywashy one at best

I'll never forget the first time I was ever made aware of Dire Straits' existence. It was back in school when my friends and I decided to do one of those "What is your mental age" BuzzFeed quizes (because you know, gotta prove how mature we all truly are). The particular quiz that we chose had a question that simply said "What do you think of Dire Straits?" And at the time, I had never heard of them and just assumed they were some boring rock band from way back when that I will never care about. But I never forgot the name of the band, and I often contemplated checking them out just for a laugh. But here we are, having to listen to them for the sake of this challenge. And yeah they are boring as fuck.

I'm finding this very boring.

мне ничего не понравилось. boring + long tracks

only their hit song was good

So far away has SpongeBob-y music which is cool. Money for nothing - hate it. Hate the bit about MTV, hate how soupy and slow the intro is. And why is it 10 years long?? Walk of life - fun farm/game music. Wish the vocals were louder though. Why worry has like 2-3 minutes of NOTHING at the end? Huh? Is my phone broken or is this ridiculous? (Okay update my phone was being weird HA so can’t blame Dire Straits for that one) Overall, not really for me. A little boring, long songs, they sing SO quietly…

Then radio played the CRAP out of this song - "Walk of Life" Sorry, was a button pusher for me.

I got 2 dire straits back to back. The former being their debut album. In comparison, this album is a doozy. In isolation its still a lullaby. There were only two songs that I found interesting Money for Nothing and Your Latest Trick. The sound is good but its very unexciting.

I thought this would show up sooner or later. I remember listening to it ‘passively’ when it came out. Just couldn’t avoid it at the time. Having just sat through it today, I have no connection to any of the music or the lyrics or anything. The only half decent track comes right at the end, the title track is decent enough, very atomospheric, but it’s not enough to lift this piece of trash from a 1 star.

Once we get the big hits out of the way this quickly becomes very very boring and infested with 80's saxophone. Dire indeed.

"See the little faggot with the earring and the make up Yeah, buddy, that's his own hair That little faggot got his own jet airplane That little faggot, he's a millionaire" Lyrical geniuses them Dire Straits, eh?

Dire Straits is the musical equivalent of elevator music after being boiled down to guitar solos and existential angst. Based on emotional response analysis, listeners experienced a 74% increase in boredom. If you want to hear Knopfler whine about the same 3 topics for an hour, this is your holy grail.

Honk shooooooooooo!

I never liked Dire Straits and by never liked I mean something that approaches hate. Almost everything about them was annoying. I didn't like the 80's sound - the guitar sound, the organ/synthesizer sound, Knopfler's voice, the band's looks and moves in their videos, Knopfler's stupid headband. I HATED Money For Nothing and hated the video even more. I didn't like any of their hits which only got worse the more they were played. Hard pass, change the station, I don't want to hear them.

No thank you. Easy listening like a pencil stabbed into my ear

Lyrics in track 2 meant I got to not listen to this one.

Utter fucking tripe

A concept album about dental waiting rooms, lovingly crafted, allowing nothing human in or out, and beechwood aged for maximum inoffensively, which I find incredibly offensive. Makes Gaucho Steely Dan sound like the the Butthole Surfers. I'm told stereophiles love it. If you love this because it sounds awesome on your stereo, you're kinda fucked up, man. This shit is as sexy as taupe.

Boring homophobic 80s Rock.

The worst of boomer rock.

booooring

already listened to it a thousand times!

Thought I would really enjoy it cause of Money for nothing and Walk of life, but honestly the album wasn’t interesting. It’s too slow, the lyrics are wacky. I struggled to finish the album

I remember liking this album back in the day. What was I thinking? So middling throughout.

I lived through the 'Brothers in Arms' era in Australia, where it was even more inexplicably popular than the rest of the world. It went 17 times platinum here, was number one on the ARIA charts for 34 weeks, and they played a run of 20 nights at the Sydney Entertainment Centre to finish off their year-long world tour. I estimate that about 5% of the total Australian population bought a copy of this album, and nearly as many (900,000) tickets were sold to see this tour. 'Brothers in Arms' was played so much that I know the album by heart, even though I have never owned a copy. And I never need to hear that album again in my life, thank you very much. But, for the purposes of this project, I did play it though today. I didn't like it then, and still I don't like it now, possibly even more so. Let's discuss why. While Mark Knopfler's mumbly vocals and tasteful guitar playing provide a modicum of character to this album, it is otherwise airbrushed, buffed and polished with everything that a high budget 1980s production entailed; click tracks, digital recording, synthesizers, and session musicians (including scrubbing the rhythm section tracks and replacing them with 'more professional' players). Steve Albini passed away yesterday, and I am reminded of a thing he said to the effect of 'anyone with enough time and money can make a record that sounds OK to a commercial standard. But it won't sound like a proper rock band," and that is so true here. This is a Frankenstein monster of parts bolted together to sound great on a CD player. And man, didn't everyone who bought a CD player in the mid 80s immediately buy a copy of Brother in Arms, and then evangelize to everyone within earshot about "how great it sounds". But it is an album with no fucking soul. And it has not aged well. In a scathing review for NME, Mat Snow criticised Knopfler's "mawkish self-pity, his lugubriously mannered appropriation of rockin' Americana, his thumpingly crass attempts at wit". He also accused the album of the "tritest would-be melodies in history, the last word in tranquilising chord changes, the most cloying lonesome playing and ultimate in transparently fake troubador sentiment ever to ooze out of a million-dollar recording studio". Well, I heartily concur, Mr Snow. The song that particularly gets my goat is the supposed 'satire' of rock musicians, Money for Nothing, that is the worst kind of hypocritical self-aggrandizing humble-brag commercial cash-in, sell-out, ubiquitous, stodgy faux-rock ever, which actually reveals Knopfler's contempt for his own audience. With fucking Sting on it. There's a reason that MTV loved it (beyond the pandering name drop); it is fake rebellion, designed to sell advertising. The more I listen to this album and read about it and stew on it, the more I realise how much I hate this album and all the MOR, commercialized, anodyne, 80s pseudo-rock it stands for. Now, I'm going to loudly play something engineered by Steve Albini to clear my ears out...

Is it better than Hotel California? Yes. Is it as good as Green Onions? No. Will I ever listen to it again? Not deliberately.

I just have never liked Dire Straits. Don’t like the vocals, don’t like the jangly ass guitar, don’t like the lyrics. I actually didn’t hate Money for Nothing as much as I did when they showed the video ad nauseum on MTV.

-fühl i gar nöd!

Impressive how awful you can make guitars sound

I feel like this is Dire Straits trying to be experimental, but they appear to have no idea what to do outside of soft guitar rock. The pan pipes, the funk bass, the organ, there isnt anything they can turn their particular flavour of bland to. The vocals are just about okay in soft rock but they sound completely out of place on most of this. Money for nothing is the most soft rock and so the best song, but even then the long intro is uncalled for. Really didn't like this, a proper stinker.

After listening to this album I think I'm in dire straits!

Homophobia

i get this feeling im gonna hate this so far away- 3 or 4 money for nothing- enough. the little what. 2 walk of life- 5 your latest trick- 3 or 4 why worry- 1 im not doing this anymore

Osköna låter förutom Money for Nothing som är lite halvskön ibland

Not my cup of tea.

Mikä ekaa biisiä vaivaa?? Ja muutenkin onpas aika erikoinen levy, ekaa biisiä lukuunottamatta en osaa päättää, laahaako liikaa. Ymmärrän, miten voi olla vaikuttava kuuntelukokemus.

Need to go back cuz didn’t finish it

i really dislike the sound of this record and i dislike mark knopfler’s voice but money for nothing is pretty good so 1 🌟

So overdone I have an instant revulsion. The very definition of competently dull and plodding

Luister ik liever niet

Nee, nee en nog eens nee! Maakt me niet uit hoe goed door iedereen gevonden wordt; Kutband, kutplaat, kutmuziek! Next!

Ruk. Behalve de intro van I want my mtv

One star for the "Money for Nothing" intro. The rest is insipid, cringeworthy music for 80s dads to listen to in their Ford Cortinas. Not sure why a band from Newcastle are trying to sound like they're from Nevada too.

NOOOOOOOPE.. awful.. How is this on the list. JFC

Great!

I couldnt get away with it

Money for Nothing is great, but it's eight minutes long for some reason, and nothing else is particularly memorable aside from "Walk of Life", which I never super liked.
