Reviews (page 13 of 14)

Ok outside of hits. Very 80s

There's some real beauty in this album. Noodling doesn't always do it for me, however tracks like 'Why Worry' and 'So Far Away' really surprised me.

Walk of life is dope lol

Good album. Not really blown away but it was enjoyable. Two hits I recognized immediately. Really dug the title track.

Uthørt

Didn’t listen to all of it but I enjoyed it.

some bangers

Also a bit meh. Wasn't anything special music-wise in my opinion.

I don't get it. I read a lot of reviews, trying to understand it, and the consensus seems to be that this is their best album. For me, it's a million miles away from their self-titled album, and they moved in the wrong direction. Best track: So Far Away

I bought this when it came out, never played side 2. I wasn’t missing out

aight 2.5

I wanted to like this more but it’s just so cheesy sounding to me now.

So Dad, so 80s. Starts off cheesy but bearable but ends up sounding like B movie score cut scene music from that era.

I like the guitar sound but overall this didn't click for me. Just a bit too cheesy

Not sure I understand the success of dire straits outside of Sultan of Swing…

Dire straits first record is sick, and outside of the odd track, that makes this poncy shite such a disappointment.

A couple classic tracks. The rest is boring sax and lyrics I’m not about

Si ça aurais été fait dans les 70’s au lieu des 80’ ça aurais été banger

All the hits front-loaded! The rest of the album is pretty meh, so sadly that brings down the score quite a bit.

This was a conflicting album to listen to. First of all, "Money for Nothing" absolutely carries this album. No other song even comes close to how iconic that song is. It also stands out as the only song on the album with any energy. This genre of rock has become synonymous with rich white men on lake yachts and sailboats. It's Yacht Rock to the core and honestly, I couldn't care less. It's a sugar cookie with a single M&M. It's a Bloody Mary with a single pickle. It's Subaru Outback with a single bumper sticker. It's just carried so hard by "Money for Nothing" that the rest of the album pales in comparison. I dare to say without "Money for Nothing", this album would have not made this list. 4/10

like the singles, the others puke

Dire Straits are fine, but I can't now, nor will I ever be able to, separate this from Weird Al's "Beverly Hillbillies," and so I cannot take it seriously. Sorry, Knopfler. "Move-a move-a movie stars." And honestly, isn't everything better if it's followed by an ad for Gandhi 2 and "Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars"?

So American I feel the grease in my lungs. Yes, I know they are not American. 2/5

Never been a big Dire Straits fan. Now, I'll admit "Money For Nothing" is a fantastic track. Also, "Walk of Life" is catchy as hell. I don't really vibe with anything else, though. Rest of the album is a bit of a soft-rock snoozefest.

512/1089 - The musicians are all extremely good, esp. Michael Brecker, he's on a lot more albums on this list than I thought, I wish some Brecker Brothers stuff was on the list too. Unfortunately to me, it sounds like generic 80s music + rock guitar noodling. I liked the Sting feature. Completely unrelated to the music but the album art looks really cool.

Money for nothing is fantastic. The rest of this album is duller than the dullest dishwater. A total snoozefest. 2/5 but only because I want my MTV

Nå vet jeg hvordan Pink Floyd høres ut for de som ikke liker Pink Floyd.

This should've been a 20-minute EP.

This was a popular choice for my function DJ father to play at yuppie seminars for boomers in the 90’s/early 00’s

interesante supongo

Wasn’t quite mine I just like sad music and it was just too much American

No. Totally not for me. Pop rock is an anathema.

So Far Away is nice I guess. Not doing Walk Of Life 'cause I'm not trying to watch sports right now or ever. This is classic Boomer shit. This is mid-80s chilling at the river on a weekend getaway with parents and their friends. It's being at my dad's friend's house while he shows off his new CD player that costs hundreds of 80s dollars. This is the Boomer life, a dream life that existed for a brief time and for a limited amount of people. Glad I was there to enjoy some of it, to see what the spoils were like before all that "prosperity" evaporated. It was cool being out with family and family friends riding ATCs and quads, having fun until the sunset took us home to some Dire Straights or whatever. It was nice and it doesn't exist anymore because it wasn't predicated on any sort of equitable distribution of wealth, so future generations wouldn't see much of it, with each generation getting less and less. In a short time following, we find ourselves without homes, pensions, healthcare, so many one paycheck away from total calamity. Oh, actually I didn't mention but my parents just sold the house they were in and bought a new, more expensive house. It's 3 bedroom, 2 living rooms, yard, got the HOA and a community pool and pickleball courts which is super-cool. Both post-retirement, just 2 people in a big ol' 3 bedroom house. I don't expect anything from my folks, they can spend their money and wealth however they please. Just saying the mere idea of downsizing (or right-sizing if you ask me) is so anathema to their values. Of course their gonna buy a new house with maybe 10 years to live. I am happy they aren't homeless or something like that. I'm happy they're safe and comfortable. The last of the Americans to spend their final days in relative luxury. The album's really not that interesting.

Too one dimensional for me. I’ve mentioned this about DS before and it rings true in this album: I appreciate and respect the virtuoso guitar playing, but the music just doesn’t do anything for me.

This album didn’t really speak to me that much, and some of the songs started to feel a bit repetitive after a while. I also honestly don’t know enough about the impact of this album to fully “get” it, but does sound like a classic to me(what ever that means).Whether sounding like a classic is a good thing or not… I haven't decided yet. I did really like the saxophone on Your Latest Trick though. That part sounded great! Overall, the album was slightly boring to my ears, but maybe that’s just part of the experience. This is exactly the kind of music I imagine people mean when they talk about “dad music”. Although to be fair, my dad only listened to death and doom metal when I was growing up, so my understanding of dad music might be completely off.

Hatte die besser in Erinnerung.

This is hard first one to listen to. Glad I gave it a chance but when you don't like a singer's voice it's hard to move past it. I am not a fan of Mark Knopfler's voice and the melodies and production don't really interest me either. And there's the issue of some of the lyrics...

Boring

Another "Boring ahh" rock album

it just felt so long. I like money for nothing

this is the 1980s but all the bad stuff for the most part 2/5

Easy listening that verges on too easy. Nothing really stood out to me. Music I would hear in a dilapidated Macy's. Great mood setting for wandering a mall fighting a losing battle, but not so much fun to listen to for leisure. 1.5 rounded up to 2.

An overrated album marking the turn from solid rock to saccharine pop, of its time I guess. The hits are at the front, mediocre in the middle, and the only strongish song at the end. But… it reminds me to play the Dire Straits & Making Movies albums more often to remember how brilliant they were.

Uh 🤷‍♂️

"Hey I know that song" - me about 5 times. Other than that, this album did nothing for me. The songs dragged on for too long and were never great to begin with.

This album was massive at the time. I never saw the attraction then, and don't now. Mark Knopfler can't sing very well, and his guitar playing is apparently technically amazing, then end result is too middle of the road for me. I honestly can't understand why this was a big success. "The Man's Too Strong" on Side B is probably the best one, but all the singles are cheesy (even, if we're honest, by 1980s standards). The final track of the album - Brothers in Arms - is dirge.

I kept trying to enjoy this and kept failing. This just bored the hell out of me, to be honest.

These are the albums that I hope to find on this list where I’m like “I know that song” but then I’m like “holy crap their other stuff is amazing” but it didn’t happen here.

Alright.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

Too slow for my tastes

I suppose

I liked this one more than I liked the last dire straits album

That one iconic song that they play at the end of a growing of age movie when everyone goes down their own paths

I bought the Money For Nothing 7” as a kid when it came out. Aside from that, Sultans Of Swing and Walk Of Life I was unfamiliar with anything else Dire Straits had done. I had higher expectations for this. It’s such a rated album, and it was incredibly dull. The first thing I thought was So Far Away should never have been the opener. Obviously, MFN is a banger, but the album falls significantly after it. Struggled to a 2 for me.

Nice riffs, sexy saxofon, but hering the whole album now in 2026 was a bit of an efford.

I don’t like Knopfler’s voice. I don’t like Knopfler’s guitar tone. I always felt like the guitar playing is soulless. I really don’t like a lot of this, especially the sweatbands everywhere. But the bass player slaps.

I have tried with this album before but it doesn't do it for me. Money for nothing has a great intro and the musicianship throughout is solid. But I don't like Mark Knopflers voice, much of it is boring and there is a song with fucking panpipes on it. And I really dislike Walk of Life and the keyboard synth riff. It sounds like it's being played by the club band in Phoenix Nights.

mid. points lost for wasting the sick band name that is dire straits

me parecio un album interesante, sonidos alegres, pero melanciolicos a la vez, la verdad me aburrio, pero la portada me parece increible, pero la verdad admirable trabajo sin embargo no conecte con este album

I have to say I much prefer other albums from them, but this isn’t bad! Fav song is ‘Walk Of Life’

No me gustó

Various reliable sources promised a revelation when I finally listened to Brothers in Arms. And I suppose they were right. I had previously been baffled by the hit singles. Money for Nothing is Zappa in intent, if not execution. Walk of Life is goofy observational comedy. The title track is sincere balladry that should keep the other two modes at arms length. Yet, on the album, they all sound of a piece. It is a coherent musical statement: Knopfler's guitars are all beautiful, even on the songs were beauty feels inappropriate; his snoozy voice snores similarly over everything; the clean 80s production corales all the songs into a very well-defined catchment area, even when they run on for over 8 minutes. Why would Money for Nothing need to last that long? I have the feeling that, if I asked Mark Knopfler, he wouldn't know, because I think the contradiction here - musical constancy mixed with lyrical incontinence - suggests Mark Knopfler has no particular artistic vision. The songs themselves reveal nothing of an artistic position, even while the music itself displays both proficiency and a delicacy of touch. If Money for Nothing lasts over 8 minutes, it is not because the song needs it, but because he enjoyed playing it. There is playing here. There is some songwriting too. There is no artistry. Artistry is hard work and Knopfler ain't working. But that's the way to do it. 2 I have always felt that Dire Straits are unfairly maligned as the sound of tired, decadent, white middle-age. This week I am on my holidays. My first ever resort holiday! I have been listening to Brothers in Arms sat in the shade on the ‘Adult Terrace’, sipping an Americano, white linen trousered and slightly hungover, staring out at the Mediterranean. This music made the whole experience feel entirely grotesque. 2/5

f slur wasn’t necessary

Conocía un montón de canciones sin saber que eran de ellos, más de las que me esperaba. El álbum en sí me aburrió un poco.

Partially known. Liked the hits, really didn't like the rest.

not my thing

Well!! My second dire straits album. And wow they’re way less cool now! I mean the concept isn’t necessarily bad, so far away alone should justify the switch to this softer, poppier rock landscape, but the second I saw the genre tags I knew this wasn’t going to surpass their debut (which, fun fact, was the first album I ever got on this site, which I awarded a 9.7/10, or on this site’s more restrictive rating scale, a 5/5). Money for nothing is cool but then mark says the f-slur so it’s less cool. He also tries to have this swagger that he just cannot pull off realistically. Actually his voice is pretty annoying throughout this whole thing, like really annoying. Also why is every song like a billion years long? This thing is fifty-five whole minutes. It should not be that long. I don’t even know the point of this. In fact I don’t even think this is a good album. There’s one actually good song and everything else is worthless. 5.2/10

Guitar carries the whole thing. They got the drummer for 20 minutes and looped his beat. The singer was holding everyone hostage and ran out of material 5 minutes into recording. Started reading off his to do list and instruction manuals

This is not the 80s I enjoy sorry. Money for Nothing is a fun song but then he also dropped a surprise homophobic bit in there so come on guys can't we have any fun? I blame Thatcher (genuinely). The rest is just naff pop and really icky sax ballads. No thanks tbh, this is lame. Two stars because I guess it's listenable and the country one was kind of ok.

It seems like they did get their MTV.

easy listening, wouldn't necessarily be a go-to.

Today I learned Dire Straits has a song other than Money For Nothing. That song is not called Walk On By. Saw the album and rolled my eyes at more boring, bland, nothing classic rock. Was pleasantly surprised at a few random sounds that came out. Learned the title and artist of a song I've been mis-hearing my whole life. Yep. No impressions. No nothing. Why did the entire rock genre spend 15 years writing the exact same songs over and over and over over and over and over over and over and over? +1 for Saxophone.

The album that made Dire Straits popstars and MTV regulars. The track that broke them “Money For Nothing” features a nearly two-minute intro from Sting warbling on about wanting his MTV, before the guitars hit like an electric shock. Unfortunately, the lyrics, with lots of references to “faggots” and “chicks,” haven’t exactly aged like fine wine, and in fact, didn’t sit particularly well for many in 1985. My main problem with Brothers In Arms is it’s just not as good as their earlier records. Both the debut and Making Movies feel far more essential - but there’s no doubting Brothers In Arms captured a mood, and their timing (and the record label’s) was impeccable. 6/10

I know this album is a technical marvel and basically introduced the CD to the world, but almost every song is 2 minutes too long and there’s way too much noodling. Couple of bangers yes, but not enough to save it for me. Just not a Dire Straits fan.

I do dig Knofler guitar but there was not enough of it on this album. Too many synths and even horns. Much prefer Sultan's A Swing.

not for me

“Money For Nothing” has a truly scorching riff at the center of it - I don’t know if it needed to be over eight minutes long, but I guess it was plenty of time for ear candy. I didn’t love the vocal performances across the album and the hooks weren’t sticky enough to support the album’s length. You can also really hear the year. I had no idea “Walk of Life” was a Dire Straits song. I got a full-on jumpscare from that. I guess I thought I’d like it more. I found it mushy and meandering.

Music for people who like guitars more than they like music. There's some turgid stuff on here, and Your Latest Trick sounds like daytime tv background music. And that is where I bailed...

Love money for Nothing, Walk of Life is a made for radio banger, the rest I could take or leave

Not so much for me. Occasionally interesting guitar but melodies and singing doesn't hit.

#50/1001 🇬🇧 Famously, the first CD to sell 1 million copies. I didn't buy one, but had a taped copy and i can't say that i remember many of the tracks here. Money For Nothing is obviously the big hit here and whilst its a song of epic proportions, it doesn't speak to me on any level. Walk of Life has always grated on me too. The songs that i enjoyed most were the more low key numbers like The Mans Too Strong and Brothers In Arms. I can see why it was the spearhead for CD quality sound whilst i've been playing it through my speakers, but i think that there is just a bit too much in the production to distract me from what is good in there, for example: Ride Across The River and the Bass wankery in One World. Best Tracks: Brothers in Arms, The Mans Too Strong.

Very 80's classic rock. Got the twangy guitar, under the breath singing, bluesy flow to the notes. I wouldn't put anything on the rotation, but I can definitely see the appeal. It isn't as flat as many of these albums can be, but it definitely feels like one long, single song. Sometimes these kinds of albums are hard to tell if they are a classic, or just derivative. Like, did they influence everyone else, or just sound like everyone else?

Not as bad as I initially thought. The less vocals the better it felt

I actually didnt know Dire Straits made music like this. I thought it all sounded like Sultans of Swing. Not bad but not my style

Dire Straits' fifth studio album. I was recently assigned their first album – found it better than I had expected. This one is what I had been expecting (or even worse). A 'polished' sound (not one but two keyboard players), but astoundingly bland arrangements, apparently aiming for middle of the road inoffensive put you to sleep. Money for Nothing does have a crunchy guitar line, but bass and drums are boring as batshit, and the chorus and video still offend me (lyricist won the music industry lottery, but outraged at idea he doesn't have to work for his money – digs at blue collar workers who happen to be distributing microwaves and TVs – what, lyricist doesn't use those products?). I kept hoping for something I could like. Your Latest Trick is more engaging – until vocals start. Why Worry, I would like if the plodding drums were just left out. One World has a bit of slap bass, which does lift the vibe, but not enough to get this album above Really Poor, 2/10.

Every song felt like the bog standard vanilla 80s in a different way. "Money for Nothing" is Foreigner, "Why Worry" is Kenny Rogers, "One World" is Stevie Wonder. All imperfect comparisons but close enough to get across how bland most of the album was. Highlights: "Walk of Life"

Some classics but the rest were 80s sound, cringey rock songs.. Used to love it but didn't age well (me or this album I'm not sure yet)

Great musicians, well produced, dull

To me, Dire Straits are usually just kind of boring. They have a pop rock sound and, on Brothers In Arms, some vaguely 80's production. And on some level, it's too bad, because I *do* think that Mark Knopfler is a cool guitarist. Although, a lot of his high skill and cool phrasing techniques just seem to end up in the middle of decent rock songs that don't grab me. I will say that the riff on Money For Nothing is cool, but I don't love the melodies of that song, and I don't think it needs to be like 9 minutes long. The Man's Too Strong is also decent, But honestly, my favorite song is the title track at the very end. It feels like after nearly 50 minutes of dad rock, the veil is lifted a little bit and it feels like a moment of real beauty and vulnerability. The 80's sound works well, the guitar is super dynamic, and the vocals feel pretty genuinely vulnerable. That being said, aside from these, I don't really get much from this album. There are neat moments throughout, but a lot of these songs are overlong, I don't think the sound has aged well, and I don't really like the songs as they are written. There's enough to save Dire Straits from the 1/5, but I didn't really get much out of this.

Has some nostalgic hits, but overall it’s a terribly mid album. Why are the songs so long while being so boring?

2/5 - As much as I love their debut album, this really didn't do it for me. Really enjoyed Money for Nothing and Your Latest Trick but apart from that really not for me, I was getting pretty bored during the second half.

top 3 - Your Latest Trick, Why Worry, Brothers In Arms. Don't know how to really feel, was a little bored. Might relisten.

Music that sounds this 80's is always going to have a bit of an uphill climb as far as my enjoyment of it, but I found most of these songs to be pretty boring even outside of how extremely 80's they sounded. I recognized 'Walk of Life' - that song is pretty good; I had no idea what that song was called or who it was by before I listened to this. Also: I was surprised to find out that these guys are British

dajksldksaldjas

How does an album that contains as unique a song as ‘Money For Nothing’ manage to be so aggressively boring otherwise? This record sounds like the whole band is on downers- everything is mid tempo, the arrangements are non-existent and the energy approaches narcolepsy. ‘Money for Nothing’, on the other hand, is decidedly progressive- it has multiple interesting production choices (including a downright fascinating guitar tone) and legit hilarious lyrics. What happened here? One good song and two other decent ones on the whole record. The rest is bizarrely staid. I will admit it sounds very good- but Knopfler’s perfectionism with audio fidelity apparently does not extend to songwriting.

- This Dire Straits album is better than the other one that I got on this list. This one has four of their hits. At their best, Dire Straits has great songwriting - the songs are catchy, melodic, and infinitely singable (even though Mark's voice isn't really anything special). - And, I can't talk about Dire Straits without complimenting the guitar playing. - On the other hand, the majority of the songs (even the hits) are on the dated side, but since I grew up with them, the nostalgia overrides that for me. I wonder what I would have thought if I just heard them for the first time now. - Also, like the other one, this album is mainly filler - basically starting at song 4, Your Latest Trick. And all the worst songs are so long. After the hits are over, this album really feels "Adult Contemporary", and that's obviously not a compliment. - Their "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits" album is the way to go so you don't have to wade through the boring stuff.

Ya know I was digging this til the f slurs.

Overall, I found it fine but a little boring. Two songs jumped out to me, but the rest sort of blurred together unfortunately.

First album I bought as a kid. Didn't age well, except maybe the title track

Ok, enjoyable enough

Felt like they put all there effort into Money for Nothing and Walk of Life and the rest are just filler tracks

The album grew on me l

Listened to this a lot when I was 13. Didn't age well for me. Jammed out 'Money For Nothing'....

This makes me feel incredibly old. When I was a kid I’d have called it dad rock. Now that I’m a dad I guess I’ll call it grandpa rock. Some good solos but way too long and boring.

they just kinda gave up after the first three songs

1. so far away - i liked it at first but it just was really repetitive. not bad. (also this album is almost an hour long for 9 songs like what) 2. money for nothing - it says some real crazy things i like the beat and music and all but it’s super long 3. walk of life - may i say my favorite one so far? it reminds me of another song though. 4. your latest trick - nice softer slower jazzy like track i think would be so nice for like background music when ur just doing something chill like a nice dinner party or something. 5. why worry - another very long track. and it’s slow in a way i could put it on my time to snooze playlist and it’ll sing me to sleep. 6. ride across the river - not sure how i feel about this one yet. the albums definitely gotten slower though i hear lots of the same instruments happening. 7. the man’s too strong - this one’s interesting (kinda) idk if i like it though not my fav at all. 8. one world - another one of my more favorite ones and also the shortest track on this album yet. 9. brothers in arms - another slowed down song it’s alright. this album was just ok though i don’t hate it but most likely wouldn’t circle back to it myself.

The kid from school who was first to have a Tamagotchi's white collar dad ROCKS COCK to these guys. There are some nice dynamics and tenderness here that appeal, but it never quite gets "real" enough. Too tidy. Too composed. Like the judgy girl in high school that doesn't participate in anything but has some real big opinions. I'd water my garden to this.

Some classic tracks here early - money for nothing, walk of life. Kind of got bored in the middle. Money for nothing has some pretty dated lyrics.

So bored. Boooooooooooooooooored.

Some classic songs. Meh overall.

Some of the most gorgeous and evocative guitar playing of all time, and some quite lovely song writing, are crushed beneath mind numbingly boring arrangements and production. Too long, too slow, too sparse, too spineless by half

This was impossible to avoid when it came out. It sounds great technically and there is some great playing on it - it’s so dull though. Suffers from the overly clean 80s sound. Knopfler can’t sing either.

It was Ok for me. Like 2,8.

Dire Straits were British? Not sure I knew that. Money For Nothing a seminal song of the Decade but the rest does Less Than Nothing for me.

First song is Not my cup of tea.. Too American and too daddyish. I felt kind of bored through the first song, as if I was a kid sleeping in between two chairs at mom and dad’s friends wedding at 4am. I skipped cause : booriiiiiing. Second one is Money For Nothing and it is the most Man🦅🍺🏍️🚬 song I’ve ever heard and I hated it. I’m sorry, I sound so harsh and brutal but I am completely honest here ;-; also a skip because there are no surprises. Third one, Walk Of Life is a little bit more bearable, but very.. country meets rockabilly. Next, Your Latest Trick. I really like this intro, very soul with a beautiful synth sound and then… that fuckass sexy trumpet ruins it all. Not bad but skipped cause boring. Why Worry ? The fifth song on the album has a pretty intro and I like the melody and the sound of his voice on this one. It is a pretty love song I might agree. The Outro otherwise, is boring and so fucking 80s with these fucking marimbas and that reverb on the drum… Next, Ride Across The River. I liiiiike the synth melody, then when the guitar and drum are introduced, a mystic vibe is created, I like it. His voice, the lyrics and melody is so U2 meets Sting and meets The Police idk how to explain. This one isn’t bad at all. Bearable for the most part. The next tune is The Man’s Too Strong. I think this is my favorite one so far. It is the country folky sound I loooove. But the mastering is soooo 80s it ruins it a little, but my ears liked this one more than the others. Next one is One World and I wanna kms already•-• this bass sound is for funk and funk only. Fusion is also accepted but not whatever genre this song is. Didn’t like it at all and skipped. The last one is Brothers in Arms. I like the intro so far.. scared of what could happen right after. And there it goes. A mom and dad love song. In overall, this album is clearly not made for me. But it was fun to listen to something I ain’t used to. I think this album did not age well as it smells 1985 from very far away.. But I understand it could have left a cultural print onto the American rock scene of the 80s but don’t think it is revolutionary or extraordinary either.. I rate this album a 3.5/10.

Meh, it's okay - not really my thing. Those lyrics to Money For Nothing really didn't age well, but it remains annoyingly catchy and I'll give some props for the groundbreaking music video

an album I have never understood the hype about and I don't think I ever will. starts off with three good songs (strictly good, not great) and the rest of the album is boring as sin. musicianship is good, but good lord is this a slog and a half.

Bra komponerade gitarrdelar, men låtarna är rätt tråkiga (förutom Money For Nothing men den är också för långdragen, vi fattar det är ett bra riff...). Lasse-Stefans hade lika gärna kunnat gjort Walk Of Life men inte fan hade folk hyllat den då. Sammanfattning: Bra gitarrist, men svag sång och låtarna är bara meh.

Borderline 3

Less good than I thought it would be. droning and cheesy.

Why would anyone make this? It's oh so perfect, and oh so well produced but lacks all that matters to me in music: soul, sentiment, groove. A complete bore.

The vocals just kill me...not in the good way.

*drops an f slur then sings about installing microwave ovens*

Slow for me

I have stated earlier this year that I never need or want to hear Money for Nothing ever again. There are more interesting albums by them.

Track one - it was chill, I liked it Track two - I’m tempted to skip, it’s 8 minutes long and sounds like it would be in a science fiction movie, which isn’t bad, just not what I want to hear right now. Wait- it’s picking up. Okay it’s good. Spotify started playing Bruce Springsteen lol. So far the album is just ok to me.

Too much sax

han är jättebra på gitarr men musiken kan inte bli tråkigare

What a snoozer. I don't think I'll ever like slow rock songs / ballads from the 80's, which is how I'm summarizing this whole album. There are some redeemable aspects from the album, like the classic and cool riff of 'Money For Nothing', the synth melody of 'Walk Of life', the saxophone in 'Your Latest Trick' and the loud moments in "The Man's Too Strong". But overall, this album is incredibly uninteresting, dull, slow and long. Not even the best songs can escape from feeling boring. The worst tracks are 'Why Worry', 'Ride Across The River' and 'Brothers In Arms'. They are the incredibly tedious, being some of the longest cuts of the project and super slow with almost nothing happening in them.

Slow, few bangers in the beginning, appreciated the blues stuff but overall slow. Punkin note: ambient sound

It starts promising with the comfy „So Far Away“ and the tongue in cheek „Money for Nothing“. But from the annoying „Walk of Life“ on its downhill. You know how McCartney had to stop Harrison from playing a guitar lick after every phrase in „Hey Jude“? Well, nobody stopped Mark Knopfler. As great as his playing is: As a non-guitar-player it gets tyring pretty quickly. If at least the rest of the music was more interesting or the singing better ... Add the dated 80s pop aesthetic and there are just too many elements I do not care for.

Was ok

#187/1001. I suppose there are tons of people who keep the original version of this album in a safe, have bought the remasterd cd, a few extra cd copies (one for the car, one for the garage), listen to this on streaming services daily and have the nth anniversary special 380 gram 8-vinyl release on display prominently on their coffee table. But why? This album was much more boring than I remembered, the only song which might make an impression - Money for nothing - would be a banger, but it has been banging on the radio and karaoke systems all around the globe so much that it more or less has lost its meaning and memeing.

This was my dad's favorite guitarists so I've heard this one a lot. Love the hits and the rest of the album is nice but not my jam. 2 stars only because i probably wouldn't listen to it again unbidden. sorry dad

Not sure what to say about this album. It just didn't hit me at all. Maybe I need to listen to other DS albums to see what the fuss is? Or maybe it's just not for me. 1.51 stars, rounding up to 2.

I think my affection for "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life" is due more to their ubiquity during my childhood than really LIKING those songs, because I found this album to be a SLOG. The songs are needlessly long—"Why Worry?" into "Ride Across the River" is just brutal—with production that makes no mystery of when it was made. That's doesn't have to be a bad thing, but it didn't help this, either.

Banal. I get it, people loved it. And generally, they fawned over it. Well, some of us don't: this shit is just warmed over pancake batter. Yikes, I hope never to have to listen this s h i t e again. 2 stars.

Setting the iconic song "Brothers in Arms", it's really not my jam. Something in the vibe of this entire music makes me uncomfortable for some reason.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Eh, might get a 3 with more listens, but not today.

can tell they got some inspiration from Pink Floyd. Money for Nothing sounded like Shine On You Crazy Diamond. A couple decent ones but most of the time it was meh.

Maybe less f slur

Money for Nothing is a song I've never really cared for too much. Walk of Life has always had a nostalgic spot for me though. Never heard the rest of the album until now, there are some fine songs on it. Lyrically interesting. He writes for himself and for a time.

Highlights: Walk of Life, So Far Away. In a nutshell: he play the gee-tar. NOTE: try to find the original release to get the best experience. The LP running time is 9 minutes shorter (around 45 minutes) than the CD and streaming version (55 minutes). All have the same tracks, just the CD/streamed version has extended cuts of tracks 1 through to 5. Shout out to SebaVinilos on YouTube for providing the goods. Your playlist sounds great. I spent a long time avoiding Dire Straits as their catalogue reminds me of my first ex. Let's just say the first cut is the deepest. But today, I faced the music. Instead of being overwhelmed, I was underwhelmed. Four of the five singles do the heavy lifting on here. So Far Away is an odd choice for an opener. I would have placed it at the end of Side A. Walk of Life is still fun. Your Latest Trick has a pretty good sax performance that can be an earworm if you're not careful... Money for Nothing is ruined by over-saturation. Many would have heard the radio edit, which omits verse two. And my golly that verse is jarring. I learned that Mark based the song on an employee he met at a home goods store (quote) “…I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real…”. After justified backlash, Mark swapped the offending word for queenie in all performances after the album’s release. If the replacement word is any less offensive, I dunno. Why Worry for me was a downer to close Side A and a primer for Side B. This could be a thinly veiled concept album if you consider the lyrical content found on the second half. Overall: 4/10

Not bad, and ambitious, but not really engaging for me, either. I was driving on the highway in the morning as I listened to this, and it wasn't energizing. At least for me. I understand times were different, but using a homophobic slur in the 80s still wasn't good.

This is the first cassette I ever completely wore out (and was devastated when I did). Very early influential album for me that is steeped in childhood memories. I still know almost every lyric on it, even the deeper cuts. That being said, I don't find that it aged well. It sounds really dated. Production is very '80s; sterile and synth heavy, which feels so wrong for a guitar based blues/rock band. Even the guitar tones are manipulated to sound like a synthesizer on many tracks. Really off-putting. The ballads are unlistenable.

I definitely prefered the self-titled album. This one actively irritated me because of the bloated length of songs, and general lack of anything going on in between some good guitar sections

äh jag tycker inte att det här är så bra. gamla straits är mycket bättre än nya.

Sure, everyone’s seen the 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 video — a defining MTV moment — but as an album, 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘮𝘴 just drifts by. It’s beautifully produced and polished to perfection, yet that same smoothness makes it feel distant and sleepy. Technically flawless, emotionally flat.

I want my Much Music definitely doesn't have the same ring to it as I want my MTV but as a Canadian you're used to making these sacrifices. The slurs in this hit you like a jump scare.

A few good songs. One word to describe it overall: sleepy.

I knew the singles on the album from radio play. And they are ok. This album reminds me of my dad….and all his nerdy white suburban dad music. It would definitely have a home on his CD shelf along side Kenny G Candy Dulfer Michael Bolton and whatever other music my dad thought was cool (and that I hated)

first song is quite good and the rest just gets more and more boring.

Th first two tracks on this album are pretty good/iconic. The rest shades into a sort of sax-driven smooth jazz that I could not abide.

It was fine, not great. I knew Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. I never knew Money for Nothing had a terrible gay slur in it though. I don’t think I had ever heard the whole song before. The songs were too long.

Not bad, didn't know "walk of life" was them.

Always felt like Dire Straits was a singles band - Six Blade Knife, Sultans of Swing, etc. Brothers In Arms is a confirmation of that. So Far Away, Walk of Life and Money for Nothing are all pretty good. But nothing else really hits for me. I really wish someone would cover Money for Nothing - sure change some lyrics but that riff, man, that gets stuck in your brain. Possible lyrics swaps... "the lyin' politician with the overdone makeup / Yeah buddy that's his own hair" The lyin' politician got his own jet airplane / the little liar claims he's a billionaire"

It’s fine. Well produced but I’m just not a fan of ballpark boogie and this specific sound from the 80’s.

I liked the segue from the prog into money for nothing but the rest of it was pretty boring. You can hear the influence of a band like The War on Drugs but their songs have a bit more to them than what I heard here.

Lotta chances to go hard but then they don't

Man, I hate the 80s sound

Walk Of Life og Money For Nothing er klassikere der kan sparke liv i et hvert bodega. Resten var gabende kedelige.

Never been a fan of this one. 80s production and tepid compositions and arrangements.

🗑 🍑 Money For Nothing is the only decent song.

i see a lot of crossover appeal between this and Steely Dan, strangely enough. a shame that i don't really care for yacht rock. or this slickass 80s production. no edge at all. lyrics are alright. the dubby Ride Across the River is a real highlight. almost brings it up to 3 stars. almost. deserves to be one of the 1001? uh. sure. probably yeah

This is quite boring background music. I'm sure the guitar playing is very difficult but judging purely on how it makes me feel, it doesn't do anything. Songs are really long and just keep going, not sure what he's trying to do with them. Intro to money for nothing bangs though

This is a 2.5 for me, there's undeniable talent, and but song really feels like it's shoehorning its way into the 80s aesthetic while still trying to claim it's real rock n roll. I like their rock from the 70s a lot more. I enjoyed "Money for Nothing" when I was a kid (without really knowing the lyrics) but now it's just, wow you really thought you had something deep to say here, huh.

Cool production and synths. But why the f slur in the second track… :(

As rockin as Money For Nothing, is this album is mostly like a fusion album that touches on a bunch of different genres. Pretty chill, kind of spacey. Lyrics aren't anything to write home about. It was all right!

My run of good scores comes to an end, four five stars in my last five albums. There were 2-3 songs I kinda liked on here but nothing I overly enjoyed. The rest I found to be quite dull. I’ve listened to it twice and it’s very unlikely I will ever revisit it. Top Track - The Man’s Too Strong

Started off ok with the recognizable songs, got more boring over the album.

Bangers

Such an 80s sound.

'I want my MTV'; 'He got the action, he got the motion.' Knopfler intones like Bob Dylan and simplifies like Bruce Springsteen, but he has neither the reality-warping lyricism of BD or the American stamina of BS. He's actually full of BS, which gets in the way of what would be mere mediocrity, getting it together on one song only: 'Walk of Life.' But even that track doesn't approach the pop-rock spirit of Born in the U.S.A., released a year before this goes-on-forever dosage of 'cool.' But it's not cool, it's novocaine, it's a real bummer and a verifiable bore. My favorite Knopfler song is 'Sailing to Philadelphia,' the one about Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon: I think he's better when he has a source. B/c otherwise, he's as bland as sand.

Another album where I find that I recognize more songs than I thought I would - namely the incredibly grating riff in Walk of Life.

I wasn't a fan of this album in 1985, and that has not changed. There's no energy, nothing of interest, just a bunch of bad, boring 80's pop songs.

Am I crazy or is this album insanely boring? Even Money for Nothing is 4 minutes too long. The hits are enjoyable, but otherwise this album aint for me.

⭐️⭐️.5/5. Not a bad album, but not my favorite. Definitely loved the horns and acoustic guitar in some tracks but overall pretty forgettable, and hasn’t won me over to the 80s.

More like Dire Straights am I right!!!!!!!!!

This is like one of those albums that in theory should be one of my favourites but I was just hopelessly bored. I feel like I’ve heard every song before. Maybe at the time the sound was unique but it’s definitely outdated now and I just can’t get into the sound.

Dire Straits most widely known album, though nothing beats Making Movies in my eyes. If you lived through the time period where this was on the radio and in MTV rotation you may already be sick of hearing it. It was literally everywhere, all the time. This was the first album Dire Straits recorded completely digitally and to me, the first third of the release sounds somewhat sterile compared to earlier albums, but it gave them the sound quality they desired. Contributing to the "clean" sound were drums set to a click track. They were looking for the sound that ZZ Top had introduced to huge success and got it. Huge success, tons of cash and a bit hard to listen to for me. The 40th anniversary release contains live versions of songs that sound absolutely fantastic, and cover some material from earlier releases that are just beautiful.

Dire Straits sounds like what I expect Bruce Springsteen to sound like if I knew what Bruce Springsteen sounds like. Some familiar hits. Many songs went on long and could have cut at least 10 minutes off the entire length of the album.

couple good songs. really drags though. not my thing

Not bad at all but I didn’t enjoy it as the rest of previous albums.

This was the album every dad had when I was growing up and I must have listened to it a fair bit back then. Not much of it has stuck though, beyond the singles and most of the rest of it I found long, laborious and just a bit boring. Not one I’d return to

That's doesn't have to be a bad thing, but it didn't help this, either.

started to dig the chill oceanic vibes that came after the first 3 tracks but all in all its made-by-dads-for-dads highs: why worry lows: yeaaa coulda done without the fbombs ay

Would be a solid 3 if not for “Money for nothing “

Didn't get into this when it was massive, no change this time

Money for nothing was awesome but the rest were not great.

I liked the more upbeat songs ok, but this isn’t really for me.

Not bad

While I'll admit to loving the "Money for Nothing" riff and the “Walk of Life instrumentation, but the vocals absolutely ruin it for me. At the height of their popularity, Dire Straits sounds tired and played out. I’ll be clear, I didn’t hate it, but it certainly isn’t for me, and it’s definitely not essential in any way.

Walk of Life slams but overall the album just doesn't hit for me

Didn’t listen to them or this vibe of Dad rock growing up so no nostalgia for it. I liked the first few songs, which had some fun riffs and dramatic moments, but then felt kind of more like elevator music as the album went on.

Not one I need to listen to again. It’s a good album, doesn’t stand out for me.

So Far Away from me is a terrific song. So Far Away, Money for Nothing and Walk of Life to start an album is an insane string of hits. Definitely their three biggest songs. Money for Nothing is the best song Sting was ever involved with. Great music video, still holds up as cool. Walk of Life had a great video too, just sports highlights/bloopers. It was a simpler time. Now begins the real test once the popular songs have been listened to and it's just album tracks left. Not a good start with the smooth jazz intro to Your Latest Trick. Mark Knopfler got the job for The Princess Bride Soundtrack based on Why Worry. Nope, three hits and an album of garbage, nonsense mid-80s rock. They could have been the house band in Roadhouse except they aren't gritty enough. Mark Knopfler has a distinct sound, that's not enough to carry an album though.

Not a bad album, but never to my taste, does sound very dated notably the production, some stand-out tracks but it won’t get a place in the collection.

Noodly easy-listening dreck. I know Knopfler's supposed to be a genius but this album has just never done anything for me.

i mean, meh. one sone ate. the others were meh.

Good musicianship but it didn't really do a lot for me.

Was this one of the last albums that was truly inescapable. On Radio One (when radio was king) all day every day. It contains in Walk of Live and Money for Nothing two of the most irritating songs known to man and seems a little thin in the supporting album tracks compared to the preceeding two albums - though Les Boys and Industrial Disease show Knopfler had considerable form in the irritating track stakes. For a roots man he knew a good gimmick when he heard one. Anyway, a 1.5 really but his guitar playing is a good as ever so a a 2.

Idk 2.5 whatever. I don’t know if I think this band has been influential at all. I know they were big in the 80s but really, who listens to Dire Straits today? Who is like “we need to sound like them!” What have they contributed, long term, to the music world. It’s not awful. I’ve hated albums way more. But it’s just kinda, like, bread. Also their most famous sound drops a few had “f” bombs (the derogatory kind) and just has the instrumental of “Life During Wartime.” Eh!

Almost inevitably, musical artists will jump the shark at some point by releasing an album devoid of their former artistry. Mark Knopfler, ever the innovator, didn't wait; he jumped the shark - cleared it by a mile - half way through side A. On a side note, what a mistake going digital was. The DX-7s, Roland Jazz Chorus amps, digital channel strips, solid state compression ... I would say that the sound aged poorly; But, quite frankly, it sounded just as silly when it was fresh.

A decent album. Kind of sad that it’s a bit homophobic.

2 long. I wanted to give it a 3 because I like Walk of Life until I was told it would be better as a Springsteen song and I can't agree more. Money for nothing is alright, just a pretty boring album.

gruelingly boring and monotonous

The opening of Money For Nothing is cool, and Walk of Life is jazzy, but I don't like this, and all the tracks are much too long, they could all be tightened up by losing half their lengths. I was going to give this two stars, but it really wore me down. Awful.

Solid album most of the way through a few skips because dire straits are boring as hell after 3 songs 2.5/5

boringgggg

Way too much instrumentals for me. Long at the end, beginning, and in the middle

OVERALL: This went from pretty safe pop rock to the most boring songs ever made. The pop songs are pretty cheesy, but are pretty good for what they are, especially So Far Away, while most of the rest of the album is boring as hell, the only exceptions are Your Latest Trick and Brothers In Arms (and I guess One World). The pacing is so unbelievably bad, you could probably get rid off like 20 minutes and nobody would care. The lyrics are better, but they take up around a minute of the actual song while the rest of it is all instrumental, and it feels like it takes several decades off of your life. The lyrics and instrumentals are good enough to boost the rating, but my god is the pacing awful. This should only be like 5 songs long. SONG AVG: 7.63888/10 PERSONAL RATING: 4.5/10 So Far Away: It just sounds really good. Very nice vibe, and the vocals are pretty solid. I feel like the lyrics were supposed to be more emotional, but they don't really accomplish that. Other than than, the instrumental is perfect. No complaints about that. 9/10 Money For Nothing: I want my MTV. Pretty catchy riffs, really nice instrumental. He does say the bad word for gay three times, and the only justification I can think of is that he's playing a character. Other than that, the vocals are not that good. The instrumental is kinda the only thing it has, but the instrumental is really good. 8.25/10 Walk Of Life: Why is the music video about balls. Pretty nice, although it is kinda basic. The story is interesting enough to not be boring, so I guess that's nice. Good intro, and the instrumental is pretty good. After doing some research, I have seen someone say that this could play at the end of every movie. I completely agree, that sums up how this sounds pretty well. 8.25/10 Your Latest Trick: Great sax. Pretty big mood change from the last songs, really nice instrumental and vocals. The instrumental is actually phenomenal what the fuck. I can't stress enough how good the production is, incredible details. It does kinda carry the song. 9/10 Why Worry?: Pretty good. Sounds very good, very calm. The production is great, but the vocals are kinda generic. It's also like 12 years long, which brings it down by a lot. The instrumental is not saving that long of a break. 6.5/10 Ride Across The River: Why Worry but with better instrumental and is 7 years long instead of 12 years. It also has a pretty good message. The better instrumental is still unable to save the 7 year long break. 6.75/10 The Man's Too Strong: Outside of that one part, pretty boring. The story is okay I guess. The instrumental has that one part that happens a few times, other than that, the guitar is kinda interesting. 4.75/10 One World: The vocals have a weird filter on them. Pretty good instrumental, and the lyrics are good I guess. The outro is actually pretty good because it isn't unreasonably long. Still doesn't really stand out that much. 7.5/10 Brothers In Arms: Good intro, hopefully this song is not as boring as the last 4. I can barely hear what he is saying. The instrumental is incredible, and the guitar solo is really good, but the vocals are way too quiet. The lyrics are really good. It's good as an outro to the album. Also the music video is insane. Would've been an easy 9 or 10, but the vocals are so quiet that it sounds like he's mumbling. 8.75/10

“Money for Nothing” and “Walk of Life” are definitely classics. The rest of the album was meh.

Pari hyvää biisiä, pari tosi paskaa (walk of life 0/5). Ride across the river 4/5.

Shame. Money for nothing is an absolute banger there’s no mistake about that. The part where the guitar riff screams in?? Great. Rest of it felt like walking through slush. Boring and slow.

Lots of popular songs, but just not totally for me

Listening to this after a nap was a bad idea. The hit singles are quickly forgotten as the album descends into ponderous, interminable 80s soft rock. Few tracks are shorter than six minutes for absolutely no good reason. The fucking FM panpipes in Ride Across the River...

Starts off strong, then gets very shit very quickly.

Don't think anyone who wrote the gay little synth line in Walk of Life should be calling anyone else a faggot derogatorily, personally, much less attempt to use the literary vehicle of a "character" to do so. Most hokey 1980's guitar tone since Elvis. No thanks.

I really wanted this album to be good, and I feel like there are some great songs on it. But there's just too much repetition and the songs drag on too much

Boring and way to drawn out

Used to like it better but has not aged well.

Vapid with like one hit that’s jsut fine

Not for me

Soaring highs and interminable lows.

A few memorable songs.

Rather annoying.

Too much

The guitar is good, but overall the songs are too repetitive and long. I would only listen to them in the background, to be honest. About the songs I noticed. Your Latest Trick somewhat reminds me of City Pop. One World is very funky. But in general, all songs are too slow for me. In conclusion, not my style.

Not the best really. Just quite a boring album. It picked up a bit during the second half but not enough to save it. 2 stars

Good, but not my go to classic rock

set your strats to "quack," boys sure, some people miss that "money for nothing" is in character, but that doesn't change the fact that it's just a rich asshole making fun of working class people. at least the weird al version had a message we can all get behind (that beverly hillbillies was a tv show that existed).

man I thought I’d like this more but a lot of it just isn’t that interesting to me.

5,5/10 Highlights: So Far Away Money For Nothing Walk Of Life

Money for Nothing staat voor mij buiten kijf. 5/10 Highlights Money for Nothing

Their straight-up rock songs are solid (money for nothing) - but their ballads drag this down.

Money for Nothing is a great song minus the silly extended intro on the album version. Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. This album is mostly full of 80s trash though (with good guitar solos).

Pre-listening thoughts: no sultans of swing on this album 😢💔 Post/during listening thoughts: ok so this started ok and then I was assaulted by the f slur in Money for Nothing. Dire Straits came into my bedroom and started personally calling me that word because I’m gay😰. Then they burned me at the stake and spat all over my pride flag and kept chanting “boys kiss girls! Boys kiss girls!” How could they do this to me. 😭😭😭 4.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: what the hell how could u even ask that of me rn. Did I need to hear the f slur before I die??! I am in shambles 😥😞😵 Fav tracks: So Far Away, Walk of Life Least fav tracks: Money for Nothing (good song otherwise) but side two was mid in all seriousness

Not my style

The intro riff for Money for Nothing is still quite the thing, even though I've heard that song way too many times. Besides that, though, we have annoying 2/4 pseudo-rockabilly pop song and an incredible number of really slow, ultimately boring, songs.

Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players of all time, but this was really boring. The smooth jazz accents are just awful

The pinnacle of over-produced 80s soft rock - the majority of the record is just middle of the road, uninspired Casio-preset mush There’s some great guitar playing on this but Knopfler’s vocals are not great and his lyrics are even worse. The songs are all around 5-8 minutes long despite having no build or development, and generally either repeat sections ad infinitum or just have pointless ambience to pad them out - particularly noticeable on the closer which has a fantastic guitar solo outro for the last 90 seconds or so, but it comes in far too late to make it an enjoyable song a whole. Walk of Life is fun but is pretty hokey, Money for Nothing has a great riff but is otherwise pretty bad, and everything else is so lifeless and forgettable

I never liked the dire straits and listening to this whole album confirmed my suspicions, it’s mediocre soft rock. Like it does not JAM or ROCK it is just chill noise. Singles are ok but this album is nothing crazy. If your prime was the 80s you’ll probably love it.

So a lot of these songs were like “oh, this is dire straits? Yea I know this song” and then they went on wayyyyyy too long. Every single song on this album needs to be cut by 2-6 minutes. Shoutout to “Brothers in Arms” being a pivotal moment in the West Wing. But that’s about the only shoutout I can give it. This is way too adult contemporary for me and way too cheesy and schmaltzy.

Average

I can see why they were very popular but this isn’t my style

Klassikko. Kulunut. Liikaa. 2/5

Not a bad start, although it feels a little dated almost immediately. What is up with the 6+ minute long songs?

Not much to say it was fine

I'm not exactly sure what the plan was for this album. It started off with 2 classics then mellows out with the saxophone. 5 out of 10

With the obvious standouts being Money for Nothing and Walk of Life, the rest is still decent (though dated) with the guitar work pulling a lot of the weight. Some filler tracks - 2.5/5

Besides the single, this is just not as good as their last two albums, and none of them were that good. C

This album is very strangely constructed. It starts off with a three straight fun, upbeat singles, then the wheels completely fall off and it goes absolutely nowhere. The entire rest of the album is meandering nothingness that seems to go on forever. It's like Mark invited you to a party at his house and you thought it would be awesome, but now you're sitting in his living room watching him sit on the couch in sweatpants, noodling on his guitar every so often and muttering to himself. Can I at least get a drink or something, man? It stinks in here.

Decent but wait are they like a white band yknow

The hits are the best part of this album. I grew up with these songs but don't necessarily love this album. It's a mishmash of styles and has an undercurrent of jaded old rockstar (especially in Money For Nothing) that has not aged well (along with the liberal use of f*ggot). Definitely a flawed effort.

Ok 2/5

Some classic songs. Some problematic lyrics. Lots of instrumental breaks. A bit too low key for my everyday listening.

2/5. Boring. Found myself forgetting I was listening to this album even when it was playing directly into my ears. Never been a massive fan of them and this hasn't changed my mind – which doesn't bode well for my experiences of this challenge.

This reminded of my dad. Not in a good way. A couple of hits but the slow stuff was bad and i couldnt wait for this to finish

Walk of life was good

I don't know...I just don't get it. I play guitar, I know Mark Knopfler is a great player. I just... do not like Dire Straights. It is boring background music that does nothing for me.

Imagine going to a dire straits concert and sitting through 45 minutes of lullabies to hear Money For Nothing

Bit of a strange one. Like most people I was well aware of the singles and how big they were back in the 80’s but I’d never listened to the album in full. Turns out I needn’t have bothered as all the others songs were rather dull.

Enjoyed the singles but found it quite dull

Nah a couple good songs though

I did not like this. It wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be, it was very slow. It definitely had an 80s feel, but not overly so, like George Michael and that Scritti Politti nonsense. Still not good.

Un poco meh, la de latest trick guay pero me ha entrado sueño con las demás.

Well, that really walks off a cliff after the third track. If the restnof the album was at least 2 star songs, this would have been a 3 or 4. But, sadly not the case.

This starts off so strong with the wistful 'So Far Away' -- then rapidly goes from mediocre to bad to 'I really want to skip this song' ear poison. Hearing 'Walk of Life' so soon after the world-music aping nonsense of Paul Simon's Graceland did not win me over -- and then the awful 80s horn solo kicks in on 'Your Latest Trick.' It's like everything good about their debut album got leeched away by the worst trends of the 80s.

I know this is one of the best ever, but..... I've always found it boring and depressing. Every song too long!

The music of the first few songs was good - great even. The lyrics were generally uninteresting (or offensive), and I didn’t really enjoy the lead vocalist’s voice. Luckily, the back half of the album is more instrumental heavy! But it is kind of a downtempo slog. I was glad when it was over.

Did not vibe with this one

I know this album off by heart and not through choice. When I was at university, the guy next door in the halls blew all his grant money on a cd player and only had enough left over to buy this, so he played it on repeat for weeks. I quite like Knopfler’s steel guitar on The Man’s Too Strong, but the rest of the album suffers from that overly bright 80s digital production, it’s way too long and the homophobic slurs in Money for Nothing can get in the bin.

I could almost copy/paste my review from their S/T. Knopfler: good guitarist. Overall: a bit boring. On top of that, the 80s production is really a pain.

Not my thing

yeah idgaf it’s a whole lot of nothing 2.5/5

Mostly Shite. But not the worst. So a healthy shite of reasonable color and shape. Can potentially see myself listening to it with some friends when we chilling and talking and stuff

You take out the first three tracks (all of them pop hits), and you have what amounts to a typical (and somewhat dull) Dire Straits album.

Meh. Great recording. Lame band. Doesn’t really speak to me. They’re too bro-cool for me. Not about it.

I honestly thought I was going to love this. I really like a few Dire Straits songs. One of them is on this record. But as a full album I mostly found this tedious and uninteresting. 2.5/5
