Reviews (page 6 of 13)
I’m not sure how I feel knowing that he was the OG for Respect. This is news to me! Like Trent Reznor ceded Hurt to Johnny Cash though, I can only imagine Otis did the same for Aretha. At any rate, this is a great collection of soul. He really chose some iconic songs to cover along with his few originals in here. There’s so much energy and heart in this, that it’s hard not to love.
I think I'd like this more if I hadn't heard the originals he's covering here - or in the case of Respect, the superior version from Aretha. The front half of the album is fantastic, the back half all suffers by comparison. Still essential listening and Change Gonna Come genuinely made me tear up a bit so it earned the 4.
Album très bon, les musiques et reprises s'enchaînent parfaitement. La voix d'Otis Redding colle bien aux morceaux et entre les originales et les reprises (comme Respect) on sent un thème cohérent.
Super top ! J’aime beaucoup.
Me gusto. Es algo que escuharia por las mañanas, es chill y te hace entrar en el mood
cheto, 8/10
Very powerful voice. A Change Is Gonna Come and Wonderful World were my favorites. Ive heard does of these songs before and I love his renditions of them. 7.8/10.
So good
I love Otis Redding so I am partial to this one already. His voice had this heart and soul that you can hear on each song. The slow soul songs hit you in the gut. His voice on his upbeat ones gets you going. This whole album has a little of everything on it. I feel like going back down the Otis rabbit hole now. Biggest Hit - I've Been Loving You Too Long Biggest Miss (if I had to choose) - My Girl Hidden Gem - Rock Me Baby
Yes. Totally in. Listened while sitting in the sun watching my dogs romp after many days of PNW rain and cold. It was so lovely :)
This is an easy replay, I'm sure I listened more than 10 times front to back today, and I've no regrets about it. This isn't the album cover I associate with Otis Redding, but a lot of the singles are. Covering The Rolling Stones is pretty spicy, and being the original pen to Respect also earns it some respect. Immediately after that track we've got Sam Cooke's Change Gonna Come, and I don't know if it's because I read up on how Sam passed a few months before this release, or because I was paying attention to detail because of my nature with this project, but I cried. That's special to me, art makes you feel things, against your will even. There's a couple tracks along the way I can live without, but they're not bad, just not as stunning as most of the tracklist is. Overall the production feels dated. I wouldn't pay much for a copy, but I'd love to have one in my collection. 4.1/5
9 Out of ten
8 / 10 - feel for days, der Gesang geht unter die Haut - so viele großartige Chord Progressions, die Band ist mega - Jeder Song endet in einem Fade-Out ... Favs: - A Change Is Gonna Come - I've Been Loving You Too Long
Classic.
me maman los arreglos para metales en todo el disco
Very Good
Good stuff
Would be a 5 if most songs weren't covers i think
Iconic songs from an iconic voice. Every song on this album is someone's favorite song.
What a magnificent start. Knew most of the songs but never listened to it as an album. Amazing voice, superb backing from Isaac Hayes, Booker T et al. The sound of the hope of the civil rights movement’s peak, and a homage to the recently passed Sam Cooke. Didn’t know it was recorded in a day - would’ve been quicker if Booker T hadn’t had to go and play a gig! Stand out tracks are the covers of Change is Gonna Come, Rock Me and Satisfaction.
No surprise this is fab - great voice, sung from the heart
Unmistakable. Heavily Sampled. Iconic. THE Otis Redding. This album slowly, and yet all at once, grew on me. From one of the most recognizable voices, the thundering horns, rocking guitar, and roaring bass. I stupidly told myself after the first song that, “this is what I thought it would be” well I’m an idiot. It’s not. Respect, and My Girl are obvious top choices, but for me my favorite song on this album is Down In The Valley. I could listen to this any day. Each song appears to take you somewhere else that allows the album to twist, turn, and mold to the occasion. I can see how others may think it “sounds similar” but I’d suggest listening again. Then you should listen again, and then one more time. 8.3/10
All the songs are great on this one. Second only to Sam Cooke. 8.5/10 Favorite song I've been loving you too long
What a voice. A record that should be in every collection.
Class
Great album, took a few listens to stick since it’s largely covers and I first listened to the mono version. Hearing the stereo mix on headphones made me appreciate the band and the performances. Highlights are Ole Man Trouble, I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, You Don’t Miss Your Water and the great covers of A Change Is Gonna Come and My Girl. The only letdown is that they chose not to use the far better uptempo version of Respect that appears on the deluxe edition.
Pretty good! Good jams. Very influential.
это было круто, первая песня не слишком зашла, думала будет не очень. но оказалось просто супер качовый джаз, 3 песни выписала себе. на постоянку мне не идет (джаз не мой повседневный жанр), но для особого случая или кинематографа - вполне себе! 8/10

Pleasant and enjoyable.
Great album with a ton of excellent songs. Kind of threads the needle between James Brown and Ray Charles for me.
His voice is so incredibly great. I thoroughly enjoyed most of the songs I didn't know on this record. My only complaint is the choice to record versions of prominent songs already recorded by people with great voices. These versions of My Girl and Wonderful World didn't do much for me. Satisfaction is fine but not better than the original. I was familiar with this arrangement of Respect and it is great, albeit menacing. The Aretha version takes on so much meaning when you stack it up against this.
so good ❤️
Very nice soul music. I think this album is pretty much the gold standard for what I'd think of when I think of oldschool soul. Standouts I've Been Loving You Too Long My Girl 4/5
really nice
Her va det mange sanger æ har hørt før, og mange sanger æ har hørt sunget av Otis Redding før og alt sammen fikk mæ til å lure på koffor æ aldri egentlig har hørt så mye på Otis Redding, for det va jo aldeles nydelig?
Brilliant soul album, great easy listen for my Monday morning. A Change Is Gonna Come was my fav song of the album and my other highlights were Rock Me Baby (my fav first listen) and Down In The Valley
Chilled blusey wonderful Otis.
Quite enjoyable
Would buy
Really great! Love his voice a lot
Over stretches this gave very much Tarantino soundtrack
Solid album. So many classic tunes on this one and a classic voice, what's not to like? (4)
ай кент гет но сатісфекшн це його пісня?? оо, і май гьорл і вандерфул ворлд звідкись знаю може, то частіше таке слухати
Great album
my first time listening to an otis redding album in its entirety. actually didn't know this rendition of "respect," but i really liked it. "a change is gonna come" is simply a classic soul record and it's timelessly beautiful. of course his version of "my girl" is a pleasant surprise - i didn't know he covered that song. overall just a sweet, soul record. not much i can say other than it's a great listen.
I love his music, I remember hearing Sitting on the Dock on the Bay. My fav songs from the album are My Girl, Wonderful World, Down in the Valley, and You Don’t Miss Your Water. He was so influential but I didn’t realize how much.
Great album of mostly covers. Classic feel without anything being mastered. Just a bunch of great musicians having fun.
Ole Man Trouble - Cool beat, loving the horns, I have no idea what he's saying but I really like it, a huge vibe Respect - Boppy, like the pace, sounds like a better version of the stuff my grandparents listen to (maybe I can put them on?), nice fade out A Change Is Gonna Come - Great intro, this is a slow dance song, he's got a soul voice, this bridge section is so so fire Down in the Valley - Ooh his vocals in this one are really cool I've Been Loving You Too Long - Another good slow dance, I can kind of understand what he's saying which is better than usual Shake - Another good boppy one, I can imagine all the 60s people loving dancing to this My Girl - OH I KNOW THIS ONE!! I like this song a lot, I prefer imagining it's a daughter but that's because my dad sang me it Wonderful World - This is cute, loving the backup singers, another great fade out Rock Me Baby - Interesting guitar part, I like it [I Can't Get No] Satisfaction - Ooh this is a vibe, love the beat, vocals are scratching my brain perfectly You Don't Miss Your Water - PRETTY, I love these vocals, it's wonderful, great bridge to the end, and another fire fade out Overall I think it's a really really good album. Fairly repetitive but that's because it's all the same genre and it does soul damn well I don't think there are any flaws to this but it isn't 100% my thing
Me gusta bien
Just a beautiful voice on some classic songs. I think I'd happily listen to Otis Redding sing the phone book in his gorgeous raspy voice. He's so emotive. The whole album was a very pleasant listen and with plenty of brass, which always makes me happy. A very tight run time of 32 minutes made this one of those rare times I wish the album were longer. I would say that Respect is a *very* different song when sung by a man. I realise it was his song originally, but Aretha's cover is the definitive version. It's a teeny bit creepy when sung from the point of view of the working man coming home to his perfect housewife - like the type of thing an alt-right dude wanting a tradwife would say. Despite my minor niggles with lyrical content, this is a beautiful record and I would say well worth a: 4/5
Some classics singles I didn't realise were all from the same album.
This was quite an surprise, I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't classic rock songs in there, that's for sure. Many of these tracks I've come to appreciate in other in other contexts and I was wholly surprised to hear them on this one. As a soul record I think this is just above mediocre as far as classic soul goes, I appreciate original songs quite a lot, which lowered my interest somewhat. The songs are great, these versions are not just all that good compared to some of the other versions of them and I was expecting to hear original soul tracks.
Didn’t finish the entire album but I loved what I listened to
Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Tolle Platte.
This album smelled like an 8-track. Literally. Otis deserves more respect than this album gave him. I would have liked it better if Otis had been able to get a couple more original songs. Hearing him get to perform with Booker T and the MG's was amazing. -1 for not enough of his own work. My Rating: 4/5
Classic
Who doesn't love Otis? Whoever it is, they're wrong, and I wouldn't mind slapping them about the head. This album is just lovely, you can't argue with that voice, it's everything a soul voice should be. Otis sets the tone for millions of others to follow. A lovely listen.
What can you say about Otis that has not been said. What a voice. I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, A Change Is Gonna Come , My Girl, Wonderful World and many more. 4.4
You can't get better than Otis!
Great set of familiar songs in unfamiliar arrangements. Fantastic album that has managed to avoid my radar until now. Glad that’s been rectified! 4
Legend
So so many hits. A joy start to finish.
Great souls/blues album. I always love finding an album where I’ve heard one of the songs 100s of times and the rest of the album matches how much I enjoy that one song. Very great listen, nothing bad to say about this one.
Good blues and soul album, definitely interesting to hear the original respect. While good listening, it is a rather short album, and half of it is covers so it can't get too many creativity points.
When I hear the first track I just immediately smile. The album is so good and I live the Bigband elements/ brass section.
I don't know who Otis Blue is, but I'd love to hear Otis Redding sing soul.
Going crazy on the sax
Soulful and happy
Just some good old soul, nothing wrong with that.
Great voice, great album. Some of the songs didn't really land for me but overall fantastic. Great music.
Good Tunes
Great album! I appreciate the songs Otis Redding wrote himself and can understand his style and sound through his song covers.
otis redding my soul goat Would I listen again: oh yes Deserves to be on this list: it's a crime that this one is here and Dock on the Bay isn't 4.3
This was great. I loved listening to this. Stand-outs - Ole Man Trouble - A Change Is Gonna Come - My Girl
Too bad I am having massive issues at work this week so I can't find enough time to properly give this attention but clearly this is at least 4 strong stars. Again not enough time to properly decide. NEED PROPER REVISIT
Considered Otis Redding's masterpiece, its a wonderful album of popular original songs and well done covers of popular songs from the period.
A couple of clunkers, but too many amazing songs for it not to be a 4.
First impressions are that the horns and drums sound so good on this. The recording is so clear that it sounds like you're in the room with the musicians. The civil-rights song "A Change is Gonna Come" is a real standout in the passion that Redding brings to his vocals. It gets some automatic points off for lack of originality since it's mostly covers of other people's songs. I do wish the album had more variety. I can't quite get on board with the cover of "Satisfaction" but the "My girl" cover is one of the best ever. I'd never heard this original rendition of "Respect" and it's so interesting how Aretha Franklin made the song more meaningful by singing the same lyrics as a woman.
A soulful collection of covers with a few originals mixed in. Good job Otis.
Thought it was getting a bit repetitive and then I realized it's different versions of the same song. This album is sampling galore. I could recognize samples here and there. Feels very influential to mainstream modern music. I fuckin love soul music tho. Amazing album all around. I'm a sucker for the bass-trumpet-raspy voice combo.
I just watched a documentary about Stax Records. It was apparently this really beautiful, multi-racial recording studio/record store that came about right at the end of segregation in the US. They started out with country but quickly switched to blues/soul. One day, a man sat patiently all day in the hallway, hoping for a chance to get in to record. This was Otis Redding, and the rest is history. I also see that some of the songs were co-written by Sam Cooke, who I am also a fan of. What’s not to like??
He’s a soulful dude.
An all-time great. Not my favorite record of his, but still undeniable.
Really enjoyed this one. Very 'all killer no filler'.
Very good, I likes it a lot.
This is an awesome album. The thing I love most about it is hearing very different versions of such familiar songs. King of Soul.
3.5
Mmmm. Gooood.
Classic and enjoyable decades later
4/5. Just some great soul music. Otis Redding is an artist who I always knew of primarily because of Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, so it was nice to actually listen to a full record of his. Good stuff.
I liked hearing some alternative versions of popular songs of the era and looked into the history of who did them first.
Loved it Otis is the man
A whole vibe
i liked this a lot but i don't think i ever rly crossed over into "loving" it - every track is really good and otis redding's singing is incredible but it feels like its kind of the same thing for all 30 minutes.
Great album. I enjoy the soul music and found that this album made me focus on my studying a bit better! Not something that I would listen to on the regular, but it was great nonetheless.
I like trumpets in this album, sounds soo good
Great great soul album. A timeless album, for sure. Would happily listen again.
I’m assuming a lot of his songs were original and not covers? Mind blown if that’s that case , so many fresh sounds , very talented
4/5 what a great album
Soulful album with some nice Sam Cooke covers. Steve Cropper guitar on Rock Me Baby is another one of the treats her. Good listening.
Nice background, 7/10
Disfrute escucharlo auque no se si es algo que es ucharia en mi dia a dia
Beautiful to listen to
Otis Redding's best known album clocks in at just over 30 minutes and like most soul albums of the era is a typically incestuous piece of work with a number of covers and a number of songs best known for being covered by others. Of the originals, Respect is not a patch on the take Aretha Franklin would deliver a couple of years later, but I've Been Loving You Too Long is stronger. His Change Is Gonna Come and Wonderful World are not on a par with the Sam Cooke originals and the less said about his cover of Satisfaction the better. However, his chirpy portrayal of Smokey Robinson's great My Girl may be the defining version - better even than the most famous recording by the Temptations. Excellent listen, but not enough in the way of great original recordings for me to go the full 5.
Bello
This sounds exactly like you want it to. Solid gold soul with R&B roots. An all time great voice in the prime of his talent with a stellar backing band, Booker T & the MG’s with Issac Hayes on piano. It’s all good but the highlights for me are the more pared down, slow jam affairs that end both sides. Side one closes with the now classic Redding penned I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, and the album closes with the incredibly plaintive You Don’t Miss Your Water. Despite having such an accomplished band, it’s these musically simple songs with great vocals that really let Otis shine and shows just how truly compelling his voice is by itself. Of course it has to be said that Aretha did it better when it comes to asking for some Respect, but the Stones can’t get no Satisfaction compared to Otis’s version here. All in all a masterful example of the genre. Giving it a 9 out of 10 only because even an exceptional genre piece like this cannot to me fully embody the concept of a perfect album when it’s mostly covers. It’s an awesome set. Not a 10.
Old school soul. So many cover that highlight Otis' ability to interpret the lyrics of other. I really enjoyed listening to this album.
I liked this album, makes me feel like I am romanticizing my life like I am a woman in the 60's. I think it would be fun to listen to this while cleaning or baking. Is that sexist??
Really enjoyed this one, some classic bangers on this album that I knew but didn't know.
Lyder som en samling af massere af forskellige kunstners store numre. Der er rigtig mange bangers og der er god energi, så det var virkelig en fornøjelse at lytte til.
Pretty much for the odd numbered tracks!
4/5
I feel like I have had a lot of soul here in these first few weeks. I enjoyed this more than either Ray Charles or Aretha Franklin, tho I'm not sure I'm fully across the genre yet. All three albums have had a LOT of covers!
"Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul" by Otis Redding was an album I had not heard before, even though I was already familiar with Otis Redding as an artist. Listening to it now, it really surprised me how strong and consistent it is. The album is a great mix of original soul songs and covers, and both sides work extremely well. One good example is "Respect". I already knew that Otis recorded the original and that Aretha Franklin later turned it into something even bigger and, in my opinion, better. Still, Otis' version absolutely holds its own. His take on "My Girl", originally by The Temptations, is fantastic, and the same goes for his version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction", which sounds raw and powerful in a completely different way. Overall, it is a really strong collection of soul music, both originals and covers, and it definitely feels like an album I will come back to again. Lots of replay value here.
👍🏻 didn’t realize I knew all these songs already! Classics
Incredible voice and some great songs
Slightly odd collection of covers. I found Satisfaction particularly incongruous but there's that incomparable voice....
Great album
Getting a 60s album from the generator: Realizing it’s soul: 🙌
It's Otis Redding so it's great, but while I like his covers I like the original tracks more.
Love love love
Otis sangs the hits in his own fashionable way
come cool tracks on this album (mostly the most known songs).
Mostly covers but still fab and fun
8.7
Even though the songs are covers, it still sounds good.
Sunshine
great album, nothing insane but just full of feel. his voice is crazy and i love the trumpets in the background fav tracks: a change is gonna come, i’ve been loving you too long, my girl, you don’t miss your water
He can sing the hell out of these songs. It’s a collection, not necessarily a statement. There are some absolute, undeniable all-time bangers here. But also just…some songs… great to put on for a wedding, party, or for sex.
I've always known this record as Otis Blue. I have always thought that "Otis Redding Sings Soul" was a descriptive subtitle. That still seems to make the most sense to me, but apparently, I was wrong. Otis Redding is almost universally recognized as a master soul singer. Personally, I like both Sam Cooke and Al Green better among male soul vocalists, but Redding's raspy delivery presents a unique experience. Every track here is perfect, and the recordings are fantastic. My problem (and it is definitely my problem) is that it's hard for me to separate these versions from their more famous counterparts. Most of the time, Redding is covering another tune, but it's even true with his own song, "Respect," which Aretha Franklin (another personal favorite singer) crushed just two years later. I usually like a rougher delivery, but here I prefer the smoother versions of "A Change is Gonna Come" and "My Girl" to Redding's interpretations. I want to judge this record on its own merits, but these songs are just too famous for me to do that. By objective measures, this is a five-star album, but I personally can't go that far. Four stars.
Really liked this actually. Did for me what James Brown didn't. Like I don't think that there were any bad tracks on this. Definitely going to revisit this at some point on a chill day at some point.
Had no idea Respect was covered by Aretha Franklin
Soul classic 4.5
A little bit shouty for me but loved the composition and the emotiveness.
soulful, passionate music. i loved his cover of my girl. best: you dont miss your water
Superb
Great voice The sax and drums keep you hooked the whole album Lots of emotion in his singing Only like 1/2 skips Ik it’s basic but My Girl is amazing that and Wonderful World are my favourites
Otis Redding is just a goat of the Blues genre and this album proves it. Even though it's not what i'd usually listen to i think i'd listen to it again.
Really really good album. I love some R/B soul music and there are a few bangers in there that slap.
Love some Otis Redding but this isn't my favourite of his.
Good vocals, obnoxious brass instrument. Feels like the sort of thing you would have on vinyl. Not too distracting, I was able to learn about matrix diagonalisation whilst listening. Thought I might have recognised some of the tracks near the end. The first ones sounded quite similar to each other.
It seems that I quite like soul, I wasn't really aware of that but I've thought both of the soul albums on the list have been good so far. The songs were quite enjoyable, some mellow others more 'upbeat' in so much as soul can be, and all were pleasant to listen to. Otis Redding has a nice voice, not quite Stevie Wonder, but it's nice. I of course know 'Be my baby' which was a highlight of the album, and also know 'Wonderful World', although I prefer the original Sam Cooke version with backing singers, still, this is a good song. 12 bar blues in 'Rock me baby' reminded me of a few songs, I'll thank year 8 music for teaching me what that is. One of these songs is, humorously, 'Feed me (git it)' from Little Shop of Horrors the musical, another is 'When a man loves a woman' though I'm less certain why that is. I also also know I can't get no satisfaction, but again the original by The Rolling Stones is the better version. All in all an enjoyable album, the latter half slightly better than the first. A lower four, but a four nonetheless. 74/100
Big Otis fan. I think I have other songs of his that I enjoy more, but always enjoy learning what songs are originals vs covers and just overall love me some soul music
Otis Redding is a unique and transcendent talent. This album is mostly covers and his versions of Respect and Satisfaction are tremendous. His energy and authenticity are infectious. You can’t help but start shaking your booty when he gets going, but he can also nail a ballad. Taken so young, our loss.
Pure powerful soul
Great album, a lot of soul in it
Some really incredible songs. This type of music becomes broing to me after a time, though, as it's often put on by people I know as background "safe" music during get togethers. Because of that it's spoiled over time.
fun listen! i'd heard most of these before, grew up listening to otis redding :P
Smooth. Easy to relisten to. What rose-tinted history could be soundtracked to. 4/5
Gehört in die sammlung
Masterful soul even after 60 years the album is still uplifting
the album is good with a few songs i already knew but didn't know the titles so it was a good surprise to find them today. Its honestly a good 8/10
Yes!
My god I needed this! 4.5/5 will definitely add Otis to my regular rotation. Healing love songs💗
The best way to start?! A fun listen. Otis is obviously a powerhouse, but the backing band is so tight. I miss professional studio-musicians from this era. Everything works. 4/5
Great album but it’s a load of covers
Gotta love Otis
Great bar satisfaction
I did like it - it seems to be covers of songs though. I liked a change gone come, I’ve been loving you too long, rock me baby and I can’t get no satisfaction. That’s all I got through before the album had to be refreshed
Ole Man Trouble: This one felt a bit short and not very memorable, will need to relisten Respect: Difficult to rate due to how iconic the Franklin cover is but this is a pleasant and catchy tune. Very moveable. A Change is Gonna Come: Ok i think this is my fav so far. I like how the music and sound feels shaped by the direction his voice goes in. Slow and drifting in a really pleasant manner. Down in the Valley: Okkk its jazzy I've been loving you to long: I like this one, slow and sweet Shake: Def a highlight, infectious energy and his voice works in tandemn with the bouncy and energetic production perfectly My Girl: A classic hit Wonderful World: A sweet nice little song where the production just seems to have a life of its own Rock Me Baby: Nice charming track (I can't get no) satisfaction: Ok a fun track I can imagine dilly dallying too You don't miss your water: A nice mellow closing track
I liked this album! Even though it was mostly covers, Redding's voice changed the songs enough where they sounded original and I only realized they were covers once I started recognizing the lyrics. Not something I would usually sought out, but enjoyed! 8/10
I was not a fan of this album being almost entirely covers. I like Otis Redding's voice and music style but I would rather hear an entire album of original songs. I didn't know that he wrote "Respect" so I learned that from researching the album. Overall, easy to listen to.
Mooi en super goede band. Alleen wel veel covers daarom geen 5.
Pretty fantastic. I might loose the Stones cover, but otherwise it's really flirting with perfection.
Need to be in the right mood for this. Which I was. Perfect Boxing Day morning music
😃
track 1. (ole man trouble) never heard of this man in my life, but i think i’ve just discovered my new favourite vocalist. this is such a perfect song i wanna cry!! a bit short and a bit repetitive but idgaf 8.7/10 track 2. (respect) OMG I DO KNOW HIM HES THE OG RESPECT!! wait why is this so much better wtf how did i not know about this guy! 10/10 track 3. (a change is gonna come) WHAT WHAT WHAT. I feel so uneducated right now (obviously i’m 15) but what this gave me chills… 10/10 track 4. (down in the valley) ugh it’s just so fucking good. i can genuinely feel it in my bonessss. just doing research on his life makes me appreciate his art even more… 9.8/10 track 5. (i’ve been loving you too long) oh my god… this just perfection. no need to say anything except 10/10 track 6. (shake) really good, just basic good not soul changing like the last one hahah. 8/10 track 7. (my girl) oh shit so this guy was literally the fucking blueprinttttt! his name should be talk in school tbh the way he shaped the fucking music industry! 10/10 track 8. (wonderful world) beautiful. cute af. 8/10 track 9. (rock me baby) oooo this is cool. lil inappropriate but yk i guess he wants to be rocked till his back ain’t got no bones lol. 7.5/10 track 10. ((i can’t get no) satisfaction) Maybe I like the Rolling Stones one better, but for the sake of it i still love this one! 8.9/10 track 11. (you don’t miss your water) omg. 9/10 overall score: 9.8/10
Smooth
i ain’t the one - 8/10 tuesday’s gone - 9/10 gimme three steps - 8/10 simple man - 10/10 things goin’ on - 9/10 mississippi kid - 8/10 poison whiskey - 7/10 free bird -7 /10
beautiful
This is great. The only reason I am not quite giving five stars is because it is mostly covers
is this the OG “my girl”? love it! The whole vibe is so 60s u could tell even with little knowledge. Love the vocals and instrumental
classic classic soul, really heartwarming. some great songs on this one
Soooo good
Highly enjoyable, but it's no sitting on the dock of the bay
Delightful collection of covers. Ironically "Respect" is one of his only originals on the album...
It’s good but most tracks aren’t the best version (with exceptions).
Į really liked it
"This is Otis. I love Otis" - Duckie Yesss fun Respect cover. A change is gonna come. so good. "it's been too hard living and I'm afraid to die"
Otis Redding is the standard and this record is chalk full of hits and covers that blow some of the originals out of the water.
Amazing voice and band of course. But still very much a glorified covers album.
♡ ole man trouble my girl 4.5
3.5
Great voice, great songs, tragic ending to his life. Great life story though and this album slaps.
Me like
Oh man, this is great. Never really listened to Otis much, even though I had a cat named after him as a child. According to Land family legend, when we moved down to Florida, Otis was on a nighttime stroll and became a victim of the alligators in the marsh across the street. Anyway, this album is as close to a 5 as can be without getting a 5. Hit after hit after hit, an all-time voice with all-time accompaniment. However, as much as I hate to bring something as dirty as Logic into the discussion of great music, if I have heard “better” versions of at least three of these songs, can I call it perfection? There’s going to be a new feature of my reviews. I’ve started a playlist with my favorite songs on each album, and I’ll list them here. To catch up on previous albums: Catch a Fire: -Stir It Up -High Tide or Low Tide Vol. 4: N/A Otis Blue: -Respect -Change Gonna Come -My Girl -Wonderful World -Satisfaction (I Can’t Get No)
Good blues and soul album, definitely interesting to hear the original respect. While good listening, it is a rather short album, and half of it is covers so it can't get too many creativity points.
Edited to a 4 - as I have listened to this again...
What can I say? It's Otis Redding!
I feel like I'm trampling on sacred ground by saying this, but I think Otis Redding is... fine? His voice is great, don't get me wrong, but the loosey-goosey, stop/start, rambling style of his approach trades in power for enthusiasm, and maybe doesn't translate as well to a studio environment. What does translate is the backing band: Booker T. & the MG's (RIP Steve Cropper), plus Isaac Hayes on piano, and a ripping horn section pilfered from the Mar-Keys and Memphis Horns. The music absolutely crackles. This is a largely a covers album, but Otis definitely takes ownership of more than a few songs. His version of B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby" is a sweaty masterpiece and Otis made everyone forget the original version of "You Don't Miss Your Water" (who the heck is William Bell, anyway?). He steals "Shake" from Sam Cooke, gives a looser, funkier version of "Wonderful World" and maybe doesn't quite top Sam's version of "A Change Is Gonna Come" but I do appreciate the small-band arrangement of it compared to the ostentatious strings and horns of Sam's version. Otis would receive a dose of his own medicine when Aretha came around to take "Respect" from him, so it's all good. The version of The Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No Satisfaction)" is less a cover than an interpretation, with Otis abandoning the lyrics after the first verse to forge his own path, but the band absolutely kills it. Fun album, but it's a shame this is the only Otis content we'll get on this list. His album The Dictionary of Soul is also a great listen, as is his Whiskey-A-Go-Go concert album.
Pivotal music. Singing is beautiful but some of the lyrics a little repetitive.
A really relaxing album. What a voice 4 ⭐️
Really good soul. Cool renditions of some classics like My Girl and Respect. All around great album.
Legendary voice with some legendary songs. Great compilation of tracks and solid album overall
This was a good album and a fun listen. Not the most amazing thing ever, since there were some covers on here. However, it was cool to hear his take on these songs, and the originals were interesting. Really liked Respect before AF did it.
Does this have every hit ever on it?
Mostly covers but damn good covers. Favorite track: A Change Is Gonna Come
It was a good album to listen to in the morning, definitely got me up and moving. I just wish there was a little bit more variety in it. I love a good slower/melancholic song which this was missing.
Otis.... He did not miss, so far as I'm aware.
STELLAR Not many people have the ability to convey emotion on the level that Otis Redding could. While not his best record in my opinion as this is maybe his 3rd or 4th best..... wait. This is the only album on this list by Otis Redding. Of all the crap I have had to listen to including 6 albums by Nick Cave, 4 by PJ Harvey and yet one, ONE by Otis Redding. 3 albums by Dexys Midnight fucking Runners. I think I only continue to go through this list just to piss myself off. Today the mission was accomplished.
Really enjoyed!
Muito bom, gostoso e groovy. Clássico
A solid album, but it doesn't quite make it to be truly great.
Good lol, didn’t realise how many of his covers went elsewhere!
One of the best R&B/Soul albums ever released. A true classic. Including the acclaimed Stax house band - Booker T. and the M.G.'s + the Mar-Keys horn section, and "pianist" Isaac Hayes. Pitchfork: 10 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #178 Best Songs Respect A Change Is Gonna Come I've Been Loving You Too Long Shake
Good
some of the most iconic blues and r&b songs. mostly covers but performed well.
Album #3: Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul Genre (according to Wikipedia): Soul, R&B, blues, rock, Southern soul Singles?: Respect, I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, Shake, Satisfaction Have you heard any songs from this album or artist before?: Yes. I’ve fully listened to this album once before. I know Redding’s songs “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”, “Try a Little Tenderness”, “These Arms of Mine”, and “That’s How Strong My Love Is” too. Thoughts?: I love soul music. I find it to be a relaxing genre. It’s mainly because of the accompanying arrangements that support the vocalist. The vocalists’ efforts, usually, are smooth and complement the music beautifully. This album is a fine example. The way Otis Redding sings is passionate and fits each song he sings. Plus, these songs can either be soothing enough to fall asleep or wake up to, or energetic enough to wake you up to (see a theme?) and get you in a good mood. Favorite songs: Respect, Change Gonna Come, I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, Wonderful World, Rock Me Baby, Satisfaction (I Can’t Get No) As a writer, what can you use this music for when honing your craft?: This is perfect for scenes involving mornings or calmer scenes. I’ve gotta be careful about how to use it though. The more I listen, the more the interpretation could switch to something involving romance. It’s not like that’s a bad thing though. File correlations: File #002: Heaven’s Helpers or File #003: American Peas.
I've been well aware of Otis Redding but never before put a full album on so this was an interesting experience. Predictably it was pretty great but for some reason it didn't capture me as much as I expected it to.
A new record for me. A record full of definitive versions. A record that continues to influence musicians today. I didn't enjoy the version of Satisfaction, hence the record receives 4 stars from. But it will definetely be played again.
Otis Redding best of all
I was recently on holiday to Virginia, and had a fun time explaining to a friend that I find "Americana" and a romantic view of the atomic-powered, space-faring peak of America to be really appealing. Instead of that entire conversation, I should have just put this album on. Serious soul. Favourite tracks: Ole Man Trouble, A Change Is Gonna Come, I've Been Loving You Too Long, My Girl (was the Father/Daughter dance at our wedding, great stuff), Satisfaction
Album de reprise
Soulful, not sure if it was covers or the originals. Good overall.
Fabulous what a voice what quality
Outstanding
Heard of Otis Redding only from samples from modern songs. First full album listen. Ole man trouble was good, he can really sing and good background track. Respect is a banger. Honestly I wish it was longer. I love the trumpets on all the songs. Extremly soulful. This is hard to judge because I’ve never listened to anything like it. It’s good music either way. I like changes gonna come a lot too. The way all the instruments work together is so good. Ahead of its time. Down in the valley is the worst song so far, but that’s saying something because I still think I like it a lot. Simply good music. No notes on I’ve been loving too long. Could’ve been longer and maybe better lyrics but great music. More fun with Shake, I like the switch up. My girl is obviously classic, no idea it was Otis. What a goddamn song. Wonderful world is pretty good, hard to follow up the best song on the album. Rock me baby is great songwriting. Not as much of a ballad. Sweet guitar solo in the middle. Satisfaction is another classic. Bangers beginning middle and end. Horns and songwriting are so good on water. Another Extremly well made song. Great way to wrap it up. I wanted more. This is really good music. 4.2 stars
A really great performance and great vocals, unfortunately many of the songs are covers which does bring the album down in my opinion and the cover of satisfaction was a weird choice and I don’t think it suits the genre all that well. That being said still a very fun listen
Faixa favorita: My Girl Letra favorita: “I was born by a river, oh man, in this little old tent, oh Just like this river, I've been running ever since” - A Change Is Gonna Come Como me senti: relaxada, inspirada Resumo geral: Um álbum de soul poderoso, com interpretações fortes e cheias de sentimento.
I think I’d only heard the one Otis Redding song before, this was a nice surprise. I might like some of these versions better than more famous ones.
There's some really funky stuff here
Plenty covers
You know, if this had Dock of the Bay I could easily be convinced that it was a greatest hits album. Really great stuff
This is such a great album full of soul and warmth. While made up mainly of covers, it means many of the songs are instantly recognisable, but with Redding putting his own take on many to brilliant effect. His cover of Satisfaction may be better than the Stones. But some of the originals penned here by him and Sam Cooke are great too. Plus, I never realised Redding wrote Respect. A classic song nestled amongst many classic covers.
Hitparade.
8.0/10
Classic soul, can't go wrong
I enjoyed it. Who am I to give notes to Otis fucking Redding
Pretty cool, influential album
Recognized some songs like respect, my girl, satisfaction. I liked his my girl Soul music is always good 4/5
this was sensational sunday listening
Really fantastic album. Great energy. And "Satisfaction" is one of the great covers of all time.
So good. I love hearing this version of Satisfaction, and the hits from this album are such high points. I could listen to this whole thing on repeat
The band is cooking, his voice sounds great, amazing recording (all in the span of 24 hours). Tribute to Sam Cooke.
Enjoyed this one. A lot of classics everyone knows and most songs have been famously covered a time or to. Favorite Song(s): Respect, My Girl, Satisfaction
Rating this requires some thought, or perhaps I’m overthinking. It’s an album largely made up of covers but those cover versions are excellent and he makes them his own, perhaps even better. I do sometimes wonder if cover version albums or live albums should be part of the list. Nonetheless, this is Otis Redding.
Classic early singing and a great band.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. One of the greats blasts through a bunch of soul, rock and ballads. It's a collection of songs, rather than an album (the title even seems a nod to this) but what a collection. Best Tracks: Respect; A Change Is Gonna Come; You Don't Miss Your Water
Pleasant easy listening. I didn't even notice the album had finished and found myself listening to Dionne Warwick. A solid 4 out of 5.
Oh no! Can I not rate albums anymore?... Well, this would be a 4. Super unique voice but the songwriting didn't feel the same. I see why hip hop loves him though. Jay-z vibes!
Powerhouse, soulful and sweet.
First track thoughts: Voice reminds me of Ted Hawkins a little bit, if Hawkins was a bit happier. Just read the wikipedia on Otis, very sad. Died so young! I really love the first half of this album; it feels like I've been missing a lot of this style of music in my collection. the last half of the album isn't as engaging for me, but still: any song coming up on shuffle would be welcome!
Banger på banger på banger, fekk ny respekt for otis! Beste sang: Respect
Good soulful music
Not First Listen; 4; These are all classic tracks, and Redding sounds so good on them. Really incredible how much emotion comes through in his singing. Favorite Tracks: A Change is Gonna Come, Satisfaction
This music is really just so very nice. I hope we get Pain in my Heart at some point too!
Like Aretha I wish I could hear these songs for the first time again and again.
It was so interesting to hear Otis's version of some songs that I've heard many times. Very entertaining album.
Mielenkiintosia versioita. On the roots
Otis on kova ja yksi lemppareistani, mutta parempi albumi on vielä tulossa epäilisin. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nimi jonka on monesti kuullut mutta musaa ei. Olipa hyvä!

Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul is a really good album. It helps that I have heard a lot of these songs before.
Some good cover versions, but sounded a bit dated. Good songs well performed.
Wow. Powerful performances all the way. Immediately struck by the massive horn arrangements, and fat saxes. Only a larger than life voice like Otis Redding's could match this bold arrangement. And he sure does! Soulful, expressive, and STRONG. Otis at his best. His song, "Respect," lands much differently on this record than Aretha's later version. It's hard to believe she could improve on the song, but she did. It's a testament to the artistry of them both. Aside from Otis' rather weak version of the Stones' "Satisfaction," this is delight from top to bottom. Favorite song: "Down in the Valley." So funky!
A uniquely intense but emotional voice. Great songs/covers.
One of the best soul singers went way too early. We have to work with what he recorded. I think this collection of songs is very good, but since it features so many songs we heard often enough over the last nearly 60 years (!), they don't have the biggest effect no more.
Wow. Now this is some passionate soul music, and my god, what a voice. Of course I'm familiar with it but this is the first time I'm listening to a whole album of Otis Redding, and this is a voice that could captivate me singing anything. I'm gonna return to this! Must-listen #234.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I fucking love soul
Now here's some classic soul/RnB. The author of so many songs that he didn't sweep the floor with himself!
This is a really good album, amazing atmosphere and great groove and vocals. Really enjoyable 32 minutes in which Otis does a great job, however, my only problem is that most of the songs are covers. This is one of my main criticism with this list. How are we supposed to really know an artist if most of the songs are covers? 4/5
A very solid collection of songs sung with amazing vocals.
Wonderful voice, great covers of already great songs. I enjoyed this a lot.
Heck of a singer. Good comfort music.
Great album, definitely a keeper
Great album, quick listen, no skips.
Some covers if my favorite songs
Really good Excellent voice
Otis's voice is so unique, he has an enchanting way of singing. Loved the album, but just can't give 5 stars to an album composed of mostly covers, so this gets 4 stars.
Thats fun
It’s unfortunate that Otis died in a tragic plane crash at the age of 26. Even though there were only 3 originals on this album you can hear a defining style to his approach to music. He had an impact with such a limited body of work. It would have been interesting to see how his sound evolved in the coming decades.
'Shake it like a bowl of soup' gets the award for line that made me think the longest😂is that-? is that what you do with soup? Otis I have soup all over my apartment what have you done😭 4 stars for pretty much the delivery alone. plus I made some clay ghosts while listening to this so I think the spirit of blues has infused into them👍
Punchy
I enjoyed listening to this one a lot. There is a lot of interesting stuff going on here, but a couple of things stood out. Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come is just an incredible song and this is a nice cover. Respect is also an interesting one. Otis Redding wrote it, but Aretha Franklin made it her song without a doubt. This is a very good album of blues/soul/R&B.
Really liked this even though I had never heard of it!
This is very nice. I only know Otis Redding from Dock of the Bay, which is overplayed, and from the opening line of Runnin' Blue by the Doors (poor Otis dead and gone...). This album is lovely. I like the horns. It's got a nice, warm feel to it.
What a great voice!
Surprised to like this tbh
I always enjoy listening to Otis. This is a lovely album.
It’s just so good - ingrained in musical culture
Ptn j'adore la soul en fait
I am very divided on this album which is very dated when listening (3 stars)... but many of the tracks covered by other artists have been global hits later on (it really deserves the 4th star). Regarding musical influence, just two words: "Respect & Satisfaction" Mr Redding
Once again, after the Stones one, here comes an album made mostly of covers, but with such maturity and instrumentation that it feels completely re-owned, even on classics like Satisfaction. Wild, tender, rocking : an absolute treat.
good vibes
This is exactly what comes to mind when you think of the name "Otis Redding". Nothing more, nothing less. It's good, it's hearty, it's influential. But is it exciting? Does it break any new ground, venture into the musical unknown, give us musical ideas we've never heard? The unfortunate truth of (quasi-)cover albums, particularly those performed by an already established musician who is known to perform in an outdated genre, is that they just aren't that interesting. Otis Blue is one of several famous 60s records that suffer for this reason (others include Beach Boys' Party!, Ella Fitzgerald's Songbook, the Rolling Stones' debut, and A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector). A cover or two is fine, but by 1965 you really need to extend beyond 8 out of 11 being non-originals. That being said, if you're going to pick songs to cover, you can't do much better than this. Satisfaction, My Girl, Wonderful World, Rock Me Baby... man, so many greats. The former in particular nearly lives up to the original. It's missing Jagger's grit and the heavy electric guitar sound, but the razor-sharp brass makes up for it. And Redding's vocal delivery is excellent – nearly unrivalled for his time. There's a good reason why he's a bit of a legend in these here parts. He's great at riffing with absolute nonsense syllables, in the sense that he's clearly having a blast doing it – and that joyful feeling rubs off on the listener too. Good range of emotions, too. I admire that, unlike certain punk entries on this list, Redding rotates between various tempos and moods. It's a really fun listen. 4/5 Key tracks: My Girl, Wonderful World, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Very enjoyable. Had never heard the germ for Respect before. 3.5/5
Think I've only ever heard dock of the bay from Otis which seems strange as he's probably got loads of great songs We named our kitten we got 2 years ago Otis (in my.mind after redding) when we got her. Yes we thought she was a boy until the vet told us otherwise but I liked the name so it stuck
(4) well well well if it isn’t otis redding singing a bunch of bops for 32 mins (didn’t listen to extended cut)
Really enjoyed this, will definitely be listening again soon
The album has a picture of what i can only image is a woman pleasuring herself - my eyes doth roll - but in listening to Otis my eyes are still rolling but behind closed eyes like hers. On my patented -100 to 100 scale if judging an album by its cover is -30 but taking the time to discover you were a tit is +40 then this was +70
H: Otis Redding took covers of some of the most popular songs of his time and made them his own. I love that he made them all sound like his originals, the use of horns brings a cohesive sound to the album. 8/10 H fav song: My Girl Z: the main attraction here is Otis’s voice. He has the ability to transform any song, no matter the genre, into his own. The album is mostly covers, however like Hailey said it felt like a cohesive Otis Redding album with the use of horns and how unique and expressive his voice is. The instrumentation left some to be desired, but overall this is soul at its best. 7.5/10 Z fav song: Wonderful World
Feel like this guy just sung so many songs slightly worse than the covers made them. Have to admire that he did it first to be fair. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song- my girl Least fav- you don’t miss your water
I really enjoy his voice but a lot of these aren't my favourite versions of the songs. However I do have great respect (get it!) for the original songs, even if they went on to have covers I liked more. Favourite song: Wonderful World Least: Rock Me Baby
This album makes me feel religious even though I'm not, incredible
Smooth, soulful covers of some classic soul songs. Having already heard Aretha Franklin’s album, listening to the arrangement Redding picks on these tracks is fascinating, especially when my only exposure to him has been his breakthrough class “Dock of the Bay”. Makes me wonder what other songs we would’ve heard had he lived past the age of 26. …Honestly it’s incredible that he had the voice that he did for as young as he was. Talented, and definitely taken too soon.
You learn something new everyday, I guess the Rolling Stones covered Otis on "Satisfaction". Great song along with Respect and Change Gonna Come.
Very enjoyable
Nie znam sie, klasyczny jazz chyba. Do włączenia w tle jesiennym popołudniem
So well performed and recorded - this is what all bands should try to sound like.
