Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Woah this album is awesome. I love his voice and the horns. Definitely adding this to my regular rotation.

This man is the real sole man

Just perfect

This album made my ears smile.

Beautiful voice, beautiful soul.

An undeniably great album.

What a force Otis is. You would struggle to name a more compelling voice. He’s covering songs here and it’s like you’re hearing them for the first time. Just an amazing talent.

Oh, Otis.

95/100

Awesome!!!!

Lässig, good vibes, morning blues

James Brown the Otis Redding a few days later, hell yeah! So many great songs on here, I can’t find anything negative to say about this one.

Wow - basically cut in a day. A epic group of backing musicians and Tom Dowd helping engineer. And Otis of course. Easily a recipe of great soul music.

immaculate

Terrific record!!

The King of Soul at perhaps the peak of his output. 10/10.

Sooooooo good. Easy 5 stars. This man has some pipes!!!

A full range of feels Sung soulfully with slight grit And well timed horn blasts

I love Otis Redding and this is one of his best albums.

It does indeed have bangers

One of the greatest albums of all time. Every time I listen to it, I'm blown away.

Otis's voice is just so iconic. Such a shame we didn't get much more of it. This album is one of the rare albums from this era that still 100% stands up today and doesn't feel dated at all. It's just all bangers.

Childhood mornings with Jamie singing that old rhythm and blues to Jessie and I.

Classic.

Zajebiste. 5/5

And in an unexpected turn of events, Otis Redding just became one of my favorites. The passion the voice the flow, this album is brilliant with covers of top hits at the time that were very risky for an artist. The air section amd guitar player are insane, crisp clean sound. Ive listened to Otis singles but mever a whole album. This was amazing I can definitively work with thos for mornings and at anytime honestly. Must listen and must add to any playlist

So much soul and emotion, really liked this one. Easy 5

Love Otis Redding. Not a single skip

Wonderful!

This album is great. It's just Otis Redding covering other songs mixed in with some originals. It's such a good take on all the covers. It's upbeat and full of soul. I thoroughly enjoyed it and listened twice.

Happy to listen to some Otis. Previously, I've only heard "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and "Tramp" (I heard the latter playing in Flying Tiger in Florence last week). I did not know "Respect" was written and originally recorded by him. Looks like Aretha added the iconic "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" part though. I absolutely love his voice, so powerful and soulful. There's also a cover here of the iconic "Wonderful World" song from Animal House, love it. The Rolling Stones cover is cool as well. No complaints 5/5

Some good ole soul music..

it was a rainy Otis Redding day and I got all warmed up from it.

Incredible

Fantastic album -- great mix of songs imbued with Redding's unique style. Definitely a keeper.

I think I'm going to round this one up to a five, it hits all the right notes in a quick and succinct notion.

Listening to this album, I couldn't help but compare Otis Redding's singing to Aretha Franklin's—for no other reason, really, than the fact that this album features three songs Aretha would go on to cover. In particular, there's "Resepect", which actually showed up on album my group got just days ago: I NEVER LOVED A MAN THE WAY I LOVED YOU. And it's not exactly a fair compairson. Like, of course Aretha's take on "Respect" knocks Otis's out of the park. Even he said she'd stolen his song. But it's also not one I wanted to do if I could help it. They both have great voices, and they're both going for their own things, so what's the use? I mean, it's probably just because Aretha's take on "Respect" looms so large over the original that it's hard to remember there even was an original. Thus, by its presence on this album, it kinda spills over into everything else—not even helped by the fact that Aretha would also cover two other songs from it, "A Change Is Gonna Come" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Let's take Aretha out of all this, though. Fully leave her aside like I should have done from the beginning and judge the album on its own merits. And going just by what it does, it's really great stuff. I mean, all the love in the world for how Redding sings, specifically when it gets **gruff**. That shit? Oh, I love that shit **too death**. I listened to "Otis" five times the same day just because I wanted to hear his scatting on the beat. And that samples a song from the album he released after this one, so—! He's just so much fun to listen to, and so unique. I can't think of anyone else who sounds exactly the way he does. So, hey, that alone gets this album pretty good marks. And thankfully, the tunes underneath it are good enough to carry this thing to **really good** marks. I can't really recall anything specific about any of them, but that doesn't really matter to me. As just a front-to-back listening experience, it's a rippin' time. So, I guess to close this out I may as well answer the question I proposed at the front that I didn't wanna ask. Ultimately—yeah, I prefer Aretha's singing. It's prettier when it's soulful, and I like her hollerin' better. Otis's is good, but if you had him sing, I'unno, "Border Song" it wouldn't hit the same. But again, it doesn't matter. Regardless of who I prefer, he's just as much a soul legend as Aretha, and his music (not just this album) is worth anyone's time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go scat along to the "Otis" beat again.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’m gonna bump up to a 5. It’s just really fucking good soul music, man. Even if a lot of it is covers, his voice just glides on them and takes control like they were always his to begin with (save for Respect, but… you know). There are little lulls on this album, and I do think songs fade out a little too often instead of hitting a definitive finish, but those are nitpicks: what’s here is really good, and even when those lulls come in, they’re interrupted by his voice booming out with power and you immediately forget they ever happened. The instrumentation is pretty nice here too; I don’t think many liberties were taken, save for the horn section in the Satisfaction cover, but everything feels pretty true to its original versions otherwise. I just liked it a lot; it’s a fun listen with some occasionally stunning vocals, and I’m totally fine with giving it a 5. Certainly no less than a 4.

Great classics

Excellent!

It's Otis, man! What could ever go wrong with this?!?! I had a calm and lovely day, how about you?

Fun album to listen to. Most songs are cover versions of contemporary R&B hits but Otis throws a little Rolling Stones at you towards the end. No one can sing a song like Otis! Always one of my favorites

I just started the first song and can already tell this is going to be a phenomenal album. But I love Otis Redding, so I may be biased. It's also crazy to see how many of my favorite songs are just re-records of songs off this album. The more I listen the more I love this album. I'm just downloading every song at this point.

so very good I loved it for fun and awesome and beautiful

A stone cold classic with a variety of hits to sooth your soul on a summer day down by the docks.

Astonishing.

A lot of great classic songs. Need on vinyl

Legend. God damn beautiful.

gostei muito!!

A great album full of emotion.

This was a real blast to listen too

Unreal

4.9 - I feel this could be a 5, but not sure how I feel about an album with covers. Performance is a 5 though and as he died too early, maybe it is a 5

I loved the way he sang these songs. I got up and danced to his spun in this music. Great job!!

Holy shit what an album. Never listened to all of these back to back to back. Phenomenal

Otis is one of the goats of soul music. Was the first album I was assigned and what a great start!

Top tier old school R & B. Best of the best.

I hate to say this, but honestly, it's Otis Redding, the guy was a genius.

Hugely influential album

Perfection! One of my favs

Absolutely wonderful and full of soul! Otis breathes a breath of fresh air into timeless classics with grace and style. I could re-listen to this 100 times and not get bored. Standout Tracks: A Change is Gonna Come, I've Been Loving You Too Long, My Girl

Day106 - i don’t know who’s voice i like better otis redding or sam cooke but i could listen to him all day

Dang so many classics here and now I know where they're from. And while I knew Respect, My Girl, and Satisfaction, the real hits for me here are Change Gonna Come, I've Been Loving You Too Long, and Wonderful World. The way Otis sings has depth and made me want to listen to this again immediately.

Great. I love Otis.

my gurrl

Can't go wrong with Otis, can you?

Iconic record. Every song that Otis sings on this record he turns it into an Otis song.

Really incredible album.

Loved it!

Sings great songs with soul

Great great album..

This is what I came here for. I don't listen to 60s music much, generally too simple and safe for my tastes, but gems like this make it worth trying (old) new things. Captivating voice, so expressive, fantastic backing band and well written songs.

Quality album

Amazing album! Every track is perfect, this is an album which actually does belong on the list. 5/5

Fantastic

Loved!

Otis is great. His voice makes these covers something special.

Phenomenal album. And embarrassing admission time: I was today years old when I found out Satisfaction by The Stones is an Otis Redding cover. How I've made it this far before finding that out is beyond me.

A classic. Otis has an amazing soulful voice and his backing band here was incredible.

Always 5 stars.

Soulful, full of emotion yet also easy listening. Excellent album!

Otis Redding... The king of writing songs that people don't realize he wrote.

Among the greatest albums. Infinitely listenable.

it packs an emotional punch. Otis Redding knows what he is doing.

Incredible, it was like a cultural greatest hits. Every song was amazing.

A powerful album from a talented artist. This album is packed full of strong original tracks and also very famous covers. With "Respect, "My Girl," "Wonderful World," and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," this album is practically hit after hit. The vocalist's energy and passion can only be matched by his great accompaniment. This is truly a very deserving album on this list.

Otis could sing the terms and conditions from a badly designed insurance website and it would still be 5 stars! Simply amazing!

Great blues and well known classic covers

Otis Redding is fantastic. This is a phenomenal album. So many of these tracks were later recorded by other artists that became huge hits. But they all come back to Otis Redding. The entire album is full of hits. From start to finish, there's really not a low point to be found.

I've never actually really listened to Otis Redding and wow have I been missing out. Never too late to start though!

He's the king for a reason

The album is so powerful that it's hard to listen to passively. I spent most of my first listen-through staring into space and feeling the music in my bones. I assumed he was older than he sounds, I am very surprised to learn he was in his early 20s and died a few years later. I didn't know much about Otis before this. I spent all day listening to his albums and will continue to do so. 10/10

untouchable

Otis Redding doing classic covers. An album full of cover would normally not do it for me, but this was so good.

Easy 5. Spectacular!

Certified hood classic. Favorieten: Ole Man Trouble, A Change Is Gonna Come, My Girl, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

Nog steeds een van mn favo soulzangers, wat heeft deze man een chille stem.

Fantastic. I already plenty of Otis Redding \ Stax \ Volt recordings and there was very little on here that was new to me or surprised me, but I still get a funny feeling listening to his incredible voice. One of a kind really.

One of the all time greats. Love this album.

pretty good

This is a beautiful album, and it's very sweet. I think I want to listen to this when I need a good pick-me-up! Wikipedia said he was nicknamed King of Soul, and I believe that!

Deep grinding soul

The voice of soul. What more is there to say.

Loved it!

nice covers. stax allstar album

Otis Redding died when he was 26 years old. 26... What the fuck are even doing here? I got my first office job at 26. Jesus. I've Been Loving You Too Long is a GOAT, and the man could sing circles around any contemporary or anyone making soul music now for that matter. He sounds like he's been in legend status for 40 years on this record. It's criminal how fucking mature his voice was.

60s soul at its finest - Otis’ voice and energy are incredible, and the track listing is a platinum arrangement of originals and covers of absolute classics. Just awesome.

Otis Redding has always been one of my all time favorite singers and artists. What a voice! In love with this album.

Top shelf R&B/ soul album. I listened to the deluxe edition which included a concert from the Whisky a Go Go in 1968. The studio album was good, probably would have gave it a 4 but the live stuff was really cooking, hence the 5

Great album, nothing but bangers for the soul

This is just what I need right now. Soulful.

Fantastic record! The King of Soul, gone too soon! Awesome cover of Satisfaction. Added to my favorites!

loved it, perfect soul album

What an album...

Definitely a no skipper. Basically a master class in early soul

Awesome. Wish it was easier to get a hold of the original recordings without all the additional fluff, but just awesome.

Otis is the man. One of the all time great singer/entertainers.

Super hits singer.

My only critique? It’s too short. More soul, please. Otis Redding’s voice can plead, cajole, encourage, and seduce in the span of four bars. And Steve Cropper on the disc, too? Damn.

If this isn't 5 stars you might have to question your taste in music. Otis. Change Going to Come. My God. Such a great album.

Interesting voice. Not particularly attracted to the music or the lyrics.

Redding + Stax production = absolute gold. Gorgeous quality of recording and the finest studio musicians, along with the soulfulness and depth of Redding's wearied voice all combine to create a sound that is still fun and lush on the ears decades later. Wonderful.

One of my all time favorite singers. Lots of covers here, but he makes them his own. What a voice.

This has been one of my favourite listens to date. Otis just chilling and singing some classic bangers. It felt so raw and organic. A man backed by a really good band, singing covers to good songs. What more could you ask for?

Classic!

Otis Redding was a regular in my house growing up. My Dad is a big Motown guy and he had a few of his records. I love this album but I do prefer Sam Cooke’s version of Change is Gonna Come. Still 5 stars in my book

This was the first vinyl Rachael and I bought together as a couple. Very special memories. Amazing singing from a legend who was gone way too soon. Other than 2 songs, this is an album of covers, which IMO, Otis puts his signature on and they are my preferred versions especially, "Change is Gonna Come", "Down in the Valley", "I've Been Loving You too Long" and "My Girl". Ironically the one song he did write on this album "Respect", is not as memorably as the other songs, at least not until Aretha put her spin on it and made it legendary.

Cover or original, he never missed. I need Sam Cooke on this list soon though!

So many great songs on this album.

Such a fantastic album! Otis' covers of some classic songs are awesome! I know A Change is Gonna Come is originally Sam Cooke's song, but man does Otis ever do it justice!! An amazing album to set the mood for a Sunday! Feel good music, makes ya wanna move! Favourite songs: A Change is Gonna Come, Rock Me Baby, My Girl, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Wonderful World, Down in the Valley, Shake, Respect, You Don't Miss Your Water, Ole Man Trouble Least favourite songs: if forced to pick: I've Been Loving You Too Long 5/5

God I love his voice. Covers and originals he has such a way of taking a song and making it his own, of just capturing you. Could listen to this on repeat

Excellent album, so many memorable songs. Great performances from all of the musicians. A great short & sweet record.

One of the best albums I’ve listened to. I love the r&b elements. Otis is such a treasure. This album holds such classic songs.. change gone come, satisfaction, and respect are my favorites. Change gone come gave me full body chills the first time I heard it.

I can't believe I've never listened to this before. It's utterly incredible. Redding's take on "My Girl" blows the Temps out of the water, which is an insane thing to attempt, much less achieve. What a collection of songs.

That voice. The power. Despite being mostly covers (and an original made more popular by Aretha) this album is a landmark of Memphis soul.

This was SO DAMN GOOD wow

Satisfaction, A Change Is Gonna Come, and My Girl are incredible. All around a great album with lots of classics that as a GenZer I was surprised so say I recognized. Never thought of myself as a Soul kinda guy but this was a great listening experience.

F@cking awesome. Otis is him. it is crazy to know that all but one song was recorded in a 24-hour period. Unreal!! I know these are mostly covers, but who cares? they're awesome!

Amazing 4 songs in

Another essential. There are other Otis records that I love more, but this record is still absolutely incredible. A must-listen.

Awesome

I would listen to Otis Redding sing the phone book. Add soul hits to his voice and you have a near perfect album.

Really good classic covers

Packed with favorites

Awesome

Masterpiece of blues and soul.

I've always loved Otis, and this is an excellent album.

A wonderful start to my listening. Love Otis Redding. Thank you.

What a record! Puts you in a good mood and keeps you there.

Flawless. Five and one-half stars.

Awesome album, classic otis redding

Loved this one

Otis Redding! Soul! What else could you ask for?

Not sure that it can get better than this!

Wonderfully soulful takes on familiar tunes. A+

This was a welcome addition to the 1001 playlist. Otis really knows how to make a song his own! It wasn’t until my second listen that I realized that Down In The Valley was the Down In The Valley that I know! Great!

Tolles Album. Perfekt zum nebenbei hören!

Loved it! Obviously I’m not clear which songs are his or which he made popular but the album was so so so good.

One of my new favourites!

Not a weak song on here. Even if there was, Otis's voice and the Memphis Horns would transform it into greatness.

Absolute classic

Obviously a keeper

oh wow, 2h album? ok it has a lot of live and remaster tracks, will listen to the original. its actually very good, lemme get back to the long one.. ill listen to the tracks not included in the original and call it a day... alright lets finish this. amazing album, definitely belongs to this list!

I've loved Otis Redding since the 7th grade when I first heard the song "Love Man" in the movie Dirty Dancing. I didn't have internet back then, much less Shazam, so it was a bit of mission to find out what that song was and who was singing it. My mom has such a narrow acceptance of music, eschewing all other genres aside from hur-dur country cowpoke tunes, so she was no help at all. I chased down the Dirty Dancing soundtrack and was dumbfounded when I didn't hear that deeply emotive and soulful voice I'd been seeking on any of the tracks. And then, months later while watching "Pretty In Pink" for the first time, I heard that voice again. That iconic scene with Duckie lip-syncing to "Try a Little Tenderness" and he says afterwards "this is Otis, I love Otis" and I was finally onto something! I then ordered the Pretty In Pink soundtrack through the Columbia House subscription I had to open in my mom’s name because I was underage with no credit card hoping I'd finally have a proper answer, but lo and behold, I was thwarted yet again. How could this amazing singer whose music had been used in two iconic 80's movies, for two seminal scenes not be on the bloody soundtracks?? I was 12 and didn't understand the complexities of music rights and royalties, so it was a mystery to me. Then, as luck would have it, I was gifted the second soundtrack compilation, "More Dirty Dancing", for Christmas the following year. I cruised through the tracks and there it was! "Love Man" by Otis Redding. I finally had an answer! From there I was able to seek out his music and I fell more deeply in love than ever with Otis. If he released an album of himself reading the Encyclopedia Britannica, I would have spent all of my allowance on it. Because Otis has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard, and his songs inspire so many feelings; he's a profoundly affecting artist in my life. Top marks always for Otis. RIP a legend, one of the greatest to ever do this damn thing and one of my greatest ever musical discoveries from my formative listening years.

Maybe it's more of a 4.5 but it hit just right

Absolutely brilliant album, listen to the Deluxe version, the live tracks are amazing

Incredible album. Otis is amazing. Each song is great.

The skill of Otis Redding was his ability to make a song sound like it had just been written, sung, and recorded in that moment with that level of feeling. This album in particular, recorded in 24 hours, captures his soulful mastery so perfectly.

A lot of great songs on this album. Can’t believe how many of them were used by other artists and made even more popular. A foundational artist for sure. The lyrics are great, the music is great and every song feels original rather than a variation of another song. The album was short so I played it 3 times and will probably listen to it again cover to cover. I really enjoyed this album a lot. I listen a 4th time. 9/10

I struggled with whether or not to judge this for being a cover album but decided that at the end of the day Otis is unique on each song and makes it his. Like most people I grew up listening to Otis through my grandfather and he had such an amazing voice and unique cadence when he sang that made him stand out. Each song sounds great and works well, the only ding he'll get is that of course several of these songs are done better by other fellow artists. 9/10

What a voice. Otis was a staple in my household growing up. Listening to this album today is like listening to a part of my childhood. Booker T. & the MGs provide a fantastic background sound that elevates Otis’ voice to maximum soulfulness. Half of the songs are covers and it is difficult to even tell as he completely envelopes each performance with his style creating versions that are completely his own. Covering absolutely fantastic songs for half and creating some of the most well known soul songs with the other half, this album is a soulful masterpiece. 10/10

Such feeling. He's a master.

I don't think I can say anything bad about this album, this is just so smooth and full of so much soul. Okay, let's be honest, Respect is no longer an Otis Redding album and belongs to Aretha Franklin; she does it so much better. So many Iconic songs on this album, I know sometimes I forget that Otis Redding sang versions of these songs.... like Shake, My Girl, and Satisfaction. I checked, there were only three songs on this album written by Redding. Standouts: Ole Man Trouble, Change Gonna Come, I've Been Loving You Too Long, My Girl

Ik houd hier heel erg van, ik ben dan wel ginger maar geniet van het proeven van de soul

Classic

This is either a 4.5/5 or a 5/5. This album is full of bangers-recognizable songs and samples cut from it. I was pursuing the perfect album at 5/5 but this even if this isn’t its so close it’s in the 5/5 club. Can’t even describe just why you want in oldies.

Great vibe, je kiffe

Great album

Just awesome , really fun

Otis's voice is a thing of beauty and the backing band nails every note. It's a nearly perfect album.

This is a classic and worth listening to and sharing.

Classic blues. I knew my knowledge of Otis was lacking, so it was good to listen to this full album.

This was great.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

super good love me some otis blue or redding

First time listening to Otis Reading by album, and I realized that majoirty of the tracks on this album I've already heard before, and I was honestly suprised of how familiar I was with his material just through cultural osmosis. Otis has an amazing voice, and dilvery to his singing. Will definitely listen later again.

!!!!!!

Just a banger from start to finish. Should be on heavy rotation

I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was. I wasn't looking forward to it that much at first. I didn't want to do another 60s album, I wasn't interested in doing an album mostly comprised of covers, and the album cover didn't seem interesting to me. When I listened to the album, however, I really liked it. It was pretty good. The titular Otis Redding has quite a good singing voice for the songs he wants to sing. Despite most of them being covers, the songs fit together quite nicely. I really like the instrumentals, what with the brass and keyboards and all. I don't have much to really say about this album. It's just a really good soul album. It's kind of like a "greatest hits" of soul music in a way. I think this project is starting to make me realize how good soul music can be. Because of that and the impact it has had on soul as a genre, I think I'm going to give this a 5/5.

A transcendent soul record that doubles as one of the best pop albums of the twentieth century. The crowning achievement of Otis Redding’s all-too-brief lifetime. I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness when I listen to these songs. I’m ever thankful for the music he made, but devastated at the thought of the possible music we were robbed of.

Otis at his finest.

Excellent. Heard lots of influences from modern artists that I know.

I think Colin and I listened to this on our first drive to San Diego

It’s Otis!!! Doing Covers!!!! Siiiicccc !!!!!!

Amazing album! I knew half of the songs but it’s a great listen all the way through

Soul. R&B. Soberbio

The cover of My Girls might be better than the original. Otis is a master.

Bought

Wicked

🔥 album

In my heart and soul I am a blues man through and through. This album spoke to my heart and soul. It was soooo good.

I really like soul, so this was bound to do well. Otis' voice is brilliant, and the brass sounds great behind it. Fun to hear him do these covers

Assuming this is the originals, this album is a bunch of classics, and the singing, got damn, and the trumpets and the instrumentals, lovely. Then you kind of come to the problem of this not being just Otis Redding, but I digress.

Soulful and smooth

A barn burner of a soul album and a highlight of Stax. Electrifying covers and originals. I love the guitar playing and horns thru out.

It was amazing. Just seeping with raw coolness. I definitely saved this one to listen to over and over.

Love this album. Worth a purchase! 5/5

Great vocal performance. Song choice is solid. The band sounds great.

Fantastic blues album, several memorable songs that I’m surprised I haven’t known of as late.

An authoritative work of art.

Truth in advertising; Otis Redding does, indeed, sing soul. Fantastic song selection and thrilling performances all across this album. The vocals are warm and honest, with controlled runs and embellishment but also gruff and occaisonly raspy with a break when it all gets too much. The backing musicians are the definition of in the pocket, on cue and on point. The basslines are so smooth, floating things along, the guitars clean light-reverb sound sets a relaxed tone, the drums keep it all moving with quick little fills to pass from section to section, and the horns build and swell to build up the tension and release it when they hit the big riffs just right. Immaculate.

Très bon album, rien à enlever, rien à ajouter, un standard intemporel.

Banging

Just really incredible. What a phenomenal album. It's amazing to hear his take on so many classics.

I like this one. It has range from heart ache and soul to rocking and bopping. Most people will know most of these songs. I'm really into this version of 'Satisfaction', it is pretty amazing.

Absolute classic, must have album (mono mixes best as the stereo are hard panned which is hard to listen on headphones). Even though it’s an album of covers, Otis really does take ownership of them all.

Superb record

Oh wow, dit was onverwacht veel beter! Wat een sounds, en wat een nummers.

Everything you need, if you want to see what soul music is.

This album is like pure emotions condenced into music, making it easy to connect to many decades after it was written. "My Girl" is one of the sweetes love songs I've heared despite being so simple. Also, the trumpet is pretty cool.

Just perfect. This is pure Americana.

Otis is always a 5

So many classics and in such an incredible voice. What's not to love

Obsessed.

So good I was laughing at how absurdly good this is

Otis is a great singer and he picked some great songs to cover and interpret. The band is also excellent.

Love Otis! This one has Change Gonna Come, and his rendition is great! Two other Cooke songs too. … Loving You still gives me goosebumps on that “tiiiiired”! Got 192khz stream too. Sounds great! First time listening through this album front to back. Solid 4.5+ Don’t love the Satisfaction cover. It was probably pretty novel at the time though.

Yes solid as a rock, the songs are great, the singing is great and the arrangements and playing are fine. He's not got the purest soul voice (Sam Cooke, Aretha for me) but really these are quibbles. Just give the man five stars dammit!

Wat een album. De hoeveelheid samples en covers die van dit album komen geven al aan hoe toonaangevend deze muziek is geweest. Dit krijgt zeker een 5.

Loved it

Amazing voice. No filler.

I'm getting a lot of 2s and 3s just now - albums that are either perfectly OK but don't move me or stuff that's really quite tedious after a time. This doesn't fall into either of those categories and was a joy to listen to. It's pretty rare that every song on an album has an article on wikipedia, but that's the case here. Different versions of classics as well - and it's packed full of classics. And I really enjoyed it. Always a good indicator if I choose to play an album again pretty much straight away. And then play it again later in the day.

This is brilliant, really enjoy listening to Otis Redding's voice!

So much soul

This is pure soul right here. It's kind of hard to imagine music being better than this. Then you read the full roster of performers on the album, and it all makes sense. Absolutely brilliant. Favorite track: Respect

Otis slaps. This is soulful as hell and I enjoyed every minute.

7/6/23 nothing but pure hits, only issue is that there isnt like. 4 more songs Fave Track: its always ultimately 'Respect', but new to me is 'Down in the Valley' :)

Wow, this was actually a funny album, even I´m not really a fan of this genre. I had never heard of Otis Blue before this, and I was actually glad for discovering, because this album was really good. Literally enjoyed all the songs, some more than other, but all were funny. Even the Rolling Stones cover, it was amazing. This was so chilling and relaxing, but at the same time, it was so completely, such a good vibes. I will be re-listening this along the year. Fav Tracks: Respect, Shake, I´ve loving you too long, Ole man trouble (Although I actually liked all)

Great record. Read that it was recorded in a 24 hour period. If so then great non overthought record that just nails it.

This is soul music to the core.

Classic

This was the first album I got, and all I have to say is that I feel very grateful that it was so! What a lovely way to begin this album discovery journey. For those who just got it, you're in for a treat! A short, sweet, and fun treat.

Great start to finish.

This album is wonderful

Must have. Need to find vinil with this.

What can I say about an album like this? Just sheer raw talent. Though it's comprised largely of covers, his performance is everything. It takes guts to cover Sam Cooke, but he manages to pull it off, and even make those songs his own. This absolute powerhouse of a record was basically recorded in 24 hours. 24 hours! Simply astonishing. He was a force of nature.

I was 4 years old and about 150 miles away when Redding's plane went down near Madison, WI. Oddly enough, I spent the last week listening to his catalog, but didn't really focus on any single album - Although I was a little obsessed with "I Can't Turn You Loose." A week later, I joined this and my first album is "Otis Blue." I already knew it was a classic and I listened to the mono version on Apple Music, while reading up via The Mojo & Rolling Stone Record Guides. It was interesting to find out that one of his idols, Sam Cooke had died about 3 weeks before they went into the studio, which explains the 3 Cooke songs (There were usually one or two on most of his albums). Incredible backing by Booker T & The MGs with The Memphis Horns. Classic Memphis/Stax/Volt soul.

Beautiful. Perfect.

One of the greatest to ever do it. 9/10

Otis is the GOAT

Great album with some classic songs

I wonder how many modern day soulless streaming stars will compare against this in another 58 years? Great voice, great songs and musicality to match. This is what music is about - songs you can sing and that stay with you. Just brilliant.

What an incredible voice, and a generational talent. I researched a few of these mega hits to see if Otis had written them or another band and it appears to be a mixed bag. The fact that he wrote respect is an accomplishment on its own, but that he also covered Sam Cooke and The Rolling Stones is wild. This album is just an exploration of the genre on its own. It’s like a best hits of soul. Otis can take you on a journey with just his voice. Truly incredible stuff. I would buy this album.

- First time listening to this start to finish, but I'd heard most of the songs before - Really good album, not a genre I listen to often but this is one of the best soul albums I've heard - Probably the perfect soul album despite the number of covers on it, so it's got to be 5* - Fav songs: Respect, My Girl, You Don't Miss Your Water

I can see no reason why this shouldn't be five stars.

Probably the first time an R&B/Soul record has connected with me on an emotional level, rather than just a technical one. If that doesn't speak of the value of the album, I don't know what does.

"Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul" is the third studio album by American soul singer and songwriter Otis Redding. The album is mainly cover versions of contemporary R&B hits and also has three of his own written songs. It was released in the US on the Volt label, a subsidiary of Stax Records, and recorded in Memphis in a 24 hr-period (all but one song). The backing band was Booker T. & M.G.'s, Isaac Hayes on piano and the horn section featuring members of The Mar-Keys and The Memphis Horns. Well, with Otis as your vocalist, that's about as good a band as I've seen and heard. This album is considered Redding's first realized LP and the definitive soul album of its period. It was the first R&B album to the top the US charts and lso reached #6 in the UK. The album open with Redding's "Ole Man Trouble." Bluesy with the guitar and very horns forward. Redding'' voice just oozing soul. It's about a man unable to escape the brutality reality of the blues. Another Redding-written song which you might know from another artist is "Respect." It's uptempo and energetic. Redding's lyrics meant to gain respect from his wife after coming home from being on the road. Yeah, well, Aretha transformed it to a feminist anthem. Why did I just think of Matt "Guitar" Murphy? You know you're good when you can take a Sam Cooke song and make it comparable to the original and that's what Redding does with "Change Gonna Come." Very melancholic with the horns. The second side begins with another Cooke cover in "Shake." It's funkier. Redding is almost scatting. It's about club dancing in discotheques. I didn't know that word existed back then. Guitarist Steve Cropper rocks it out in the B.B. King cover "Rock Me Baby." With the horns and rhythm section, there's a great bluesy stomp. Redding covers The Stones' "Satisfaction" and some after hearing it thought The Stones had actually covered it from Redding. I like their replacement of the rhythm guitar with horns. A very good cover but, yeah, there's a band from Akron, OH who wear energy dome hats that might have my favorite cover. What a joy to listen to. Without question, Otis Redding is right near the top of the best ever male soul singers. An unbelievable band and an album worth its place in music history.

One could argue that the covers Otis does here outshine the originals. The same can't be said for the best known track that he wrote ("Respect"). Therein lies the beauty of Otis Redding. His version of "Respect" is awesome, just like every song on this album. Personally, I ride hardest for "Loving You Too Long" and "You Don't Miss Your Water". My lone regret is not discovering this first on vinyl. Those two songs are the last on their respective album sides. With those two songs as side closers, I would have never stopped flipping the record over, listening repeatedly.

So, so good. I must return to this!

Fantastic. I knew I'd love it.

Absolutely

Good listening.

Holy hell, how is it I've never heard some of these renditions! Old school soul album, with most of them being covers. But good lord, Otis has such a strong vocal presence. This is such a strong collection of tunes.

Perfect

The combination of the Stax Studios rhythm section and the utterly convincing vocals of Redding make this perhaps the quintessential soul record out of Memphis in the mid-1960’s.

Extremely pleasant from start to finish!

A banger. Wasn’t expecting it to like it as much as I did. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for a vinyl of this

Steve cropper on “Rock Me Baby” giving us some sweet blues

A lot of awesome originals in here!

Good grief what a voice. No one has ever done it better.

I am crying

Absolutely unfuckwitable.

Beautiful! What a singer, I love Otis. Favourite tracks: 'Ole Man Trouble', 'Loving You Too Long', 'Rock Me Baby'. 5/5

Near perfect album for me. A lot of the songs on here are essentially standards and his versions are so unique. Respect is clearly the same song Aretha does but every ad lib, etc. is entirely his. What A Wonderful World is wildly different from the Sam Cooke version and equally good. Love his voice, his energy, his band, all of it.

Perhaps the greatest soul/R&B album of all time. The power and emotion emanating from deep within Otis's soul is captured brilliantly on recording. I've listen to this album many times and we'll continue to do so.

It hard to believe someone so young could sing like this. An incredible talent with full commitment to every song. Whether a love ballad (I’ve Been Loving You Too Lkmg…) or an upbeat stomper like Shake. Excellent record.

You can't not have a massive grin on your face after this album. The very definition of soul.

Wonderful

I could listen to Otis Redding all day long. His voice is sublime. Ant the songs on this album are excellent. 5 stars

nothing should be changed or added to this perfect recording

Den ultimate black soul-artisten! Trist han døde så tidlig...

Brilliant

A romp through a bunch of excellent covers and a massive track (respect) which would later become a huge hit when covered by someone else

Excellent songs, excellently sung

Otis doing Sam Cooke, love it!

Excellent

I’ve already listened to this before and it’s one of my favorite albums

All killer. That's the tweet.

Otis Blue, Farrow & Ball.

Classics and classics before they even were classics. I learned that no one knows who wrote “Respect”!!!
