Fun Cuban music, highly enjoyed
Cargado de sabor y ritmos que inevitablemente te hacen mover el cuerpo, Buena Vista era un álbum que tenía ganas de escuchar hace bastante tiempo y me gustó mucho, no me sorprendió como esperaba pero aún así es un gran álbum que explota de canciones que definen el sonido de la música cubana.

Now this is a fucking vibe.
This is fun as heck, but also the language barrier is a thing. Standouts are Chan Chan, Dos Gardenias, Murmullo and the title track.
Turns out if you get a bunch of guys to play the same music they've been playing for 50 years it tends to be pretty dang polished. There's a good variety in this tracks as well. Lots of little subgenres that make it so each track does have a lil something something special to it. It's a very quintessential album methinks
Interesting stuff, with a bit of backstory and a bit of history. Cuban traditional and folk music, recorded in a studio that somehow makes it sound like it's a genuine club. Good melody, good rhythms. Obviously cannot rate lyrics since I understood less than 3% of what was sung. Very pleasing, deserving of its accolades.
Ah, the irony. They set out to swoop down on Cuba, gathering weathered musical luminaries of a lost generation, recording the music conserved from half a century ago that they finally were allowed to play. Thus saving a specifically cuban variety of latin music: a cultural heritage that simply would have been lost otherwise, as these artist were unrecorded. Or so the story goes. Thing is, to the unenlightened and only mildly interested in latin music, this sounds exactly like any other latin disc put together by some old latin geezers. This opens a huge gap between the cultural value of this and the reception of people all over the world, for some reason expecting something _more_ than just good latin music, though they never were interested in the genre in the first place. Forget the hype it caused. Get it if you're into latin music. But if you aren't, this will educate you, but might not convert you.
I love when music transports you to a daydream or a vibe. This did exactly that. Favorite track: Chan Chan
I mean a very nice vibe, but if we're being honest it does start very well and then drift into background music after the first few tracks. Fave Tracks: Chan Chan, De Camino a la Vereda 3.8/5
Really enjoyable, transports you to Cuba. Only 4 stars because I sense this is the washed down accessable version of this genre and there's probably some much more important Cuban Jazz/folk albums

A really nice album, but my favourite bits were by far the more jazzy its as the others got a bit more samey. Still really good on the whole though, I just wish it was all jazzier.

Somehow, I knew about the movie (which is apparently about the recording of the album), but I'd never known that there was an album? Maybe it was a bit longer than I tend to like, but I had a lot of fun with this!

This is a good album. I remember when it came out and enjoyed it then. It becomes a bit repetitive by the end but I enjoyed it overall.
Those cubanos can really son!!! Smooth, jazzy, and perfectly capturing a moment in time that had been mostly forgotten by the world before Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba to recapture it.
While one might see "latin jazz" and think high-energy, danceable grooves, this is relatively restrained; its beauty lies instead in its overwhelming warmth. Everything about it is joyful, tender, gorgeously bright. If it doesn't get the 5 it's only because I struggle to say much more about it. I'm familiar with the Son Cubano genre, and there's nothing quite blowing me away here. That's not to say it doesn't deserve its flowers though - it made me smile the whole way through, it's an adorable album all around! Slow, nice sound at first. Like a "coming home" type of energy. "Chan Chan" feels so warm, so so warm. Also really enjoying album's name and the way the album looks and feels humane.
The album shines when it leans more into the rumba than the ragtime-esque jazz instrumental tracks. The highlights are instant classics but there’s a bunch of filler too.

Heard of them before but in my head they were a rock band, I think I must've mixed them up with Bombay Bicycle Club. Wow, what a surprise! This is exactly what I mean when I say I want more music not in English. Not a single bad song here, just some better than others. I might listen to this album some more this week because it's great 4/5

Celebrating the forgotten musicians of Cuba, Buena Vista Social Club's sole album is sun-kissed delight to listen to. You don't need to understand the language to enjoy the immaculate vibes this record brings. The playing feels loose in the best way possible and makes me feel like I am wondering through the streets in Cuba on a beautiful day. I will certainly be watching the documentary about this interesting project.
I love listening to a good performance by good performers. When the performance is good enough, the song itself is like a bonus. This is what this album is for the most part: Ok songs on top of a good performance. Due that, I feel the mix is a bit too muddy to really enjoy the performance to the max. I'd move the mix a few notches away from "recorded in a room" feel to a "pristine studio production" quality. Not all the way, but let's pop out these performances a bit more. Songwriting wise, obviously Chan Chan is the standout, probably a timeless classic. Tough that it's the first song, since the rest is suffering in comparison. If we remove Chan Chan, do we have a 5 album? In my opinion, no. It's an album full of safe musical bets. Safe bets can get you to 3 or 4, but we need a bit more than that for a 5. These guys can play, but the songwriting leans too frequently on known forms.
Son cubano/Bolero Favorite Songs: De Camino à la Vereda, El Cuarto de Tula, El Carretero, Candela Least Favorite Song: Pueblo Nuevo To whoever said in their five star review, and gonna quote this person, “If you left a 1 star review with the reason stating why being it's not in English, get the fuck off this website,” preach. This was a good album that showcases their roots and wanted to show this to the public, and while I’m not going to get every single track off of this album, I did enjoyed the album for what it was. While I’m not going to give it a better score as again I don’t see myself wanting every track, this is an album that I would recommend to those who wanted to listen outside of their English comfort zone. 7/10.
What a lovely album for a sunny Saturday morning! This was so nice. Having a good time with a genre and artist I hadn't tried before, away from my comfort zone and usual frames of reference – 1001 can be joyous! It's a long album that gets quite samey – you could lose three or four tracks and still get the idea – but I really enjoyed the ride.
I'd heard of and ignored this for years. God knows why? Obviously I just wasn't ready for it. It's all good and happy stuff with some heavy toe-tapping tunes. I thought it could be just a bit too much of the same thing but as the album moved on there were variations which kept me more than interested. One or two of these tracks at a time would be enough as a quick fix when you need a lift sometimes but the whole album is altogether uplifting and a joy. I enjoyed it much more than expected and have now watched the DVD of the same name. Their sounds make even more sense now. A poor but happy-go-lucky people and rich with the love of their music - and it shows when you hear it. Whatever genre of music you favour I can't see how you could dislike this album. It just oozes with...I'm not sure what - not happiness exactly but perhaps fun?? It doesn't matter - I just wish there was more. This is the best thing to have been revealed to me since starting this process. Talvin Singh was an eye-opener but this is a step up from that. Thank you, Ry Cooder.
What was really interesting about this album was how you can maintain movement/interest in each song with diversity of percussion. I feel like a lot of the chord progressions were similar but I was never board because I was hooked on the drums the whole time Highlights: Y Tu Que Has Hecho, Candela
Very fun listen, sets a great tone for your day. Weirdly relaxing? There are a couple of snoozers on here but it mostly keeps the energy up for the whole run time.
An old fave. Was really into this when it came out. And went to see the film. When I was in Cuba went to see Compay Segunda’s grave. It’s been very overplayed in coffee shops etc but good to listen again after many years.
This was lovely background music for sitting in the sun and reading a book. I am not remotely qualified to evaluate the qualities of this as an album but it was the perfect album for the context.

I spent the last hour of my shift on my own, pacing around the lobby and trying to steady my nerves after having fretted over my car troubles all day. On a day when I needed to relax and ease my mind, Buena Vista Social Club showed up at just the right time to help mellow me out. A nice and gentle soundscape full of Cuban guitars and jazz, this album danced through a variety of musical stylings, united in their pursuit of a singular relaxing vibe. The name is quite accurate, as listening to this album feels like I'm dancing along a city street and listening to the chatter of a tight-knit community enjoying life. It also sometimes reminds me of SpongeBob video game music, but this is absolutely meant as a compliment. I do tend to prefer the songs which lean further into a slinkier, lower tempo jazz sound, but nothing here completely loses me to the point of falling out of step with its vibe. The wide array of different vocalists and vocal styles also goes a long way towards keeping each song feeling unique, on top of the varying instrumental approaches. As an album, Buena Vista Social Club is a bright sunny day, easy to wander around and get lost in. Highlights: Chan Chan, De Camino a la Vereda, El Cuarto De Tula, Pueblo Nuevo, Dos Gardenias, Veinte Años, Orgullecida, Murmullo, Buena Vista Social Club
This is a subtle one. The film is amazing in the first place and it’s great on record too, but without being flashy or having that massive hit of something to grab you… it creeps up and gets into your hips.
This is not really my thing so I'll try to be objective. The group really does a good job creating an ambiance of just chill, laid back, happiness. They are very clearly talented

I have heard this before. My dad would play this album when I was a kid and something's have stuck, the trumpet solo in "Chan Chan" is one of them. The opening is strong and has that classic Latin/South American feel and sound. At the time I was a kid there wasn't anything else like this that I could listen to and I think this helped it stick to me why millions of others as one of the best selling "world music" albums. I feel like this album is perhaps a bit too long. I listened to the 2021 Remaster on Apple Music and didn't listen to any of the bonus tracks but it was still maybe 3-4 tracks to long. There is variety of the tracks but I'm not so much of a fan of the slower more piano focused tracks, "Pueblo Nuevo" and "Orgullecida" Track wise: ⭐ All of the first 3 tracks / Dos gardenias 👍 The rest 👎 Pueblo Nuevo / Orgullecida / Murmullo 🗑️ None

I know it's coffee shop music but it's really good. So the way they made it was a British executive and an American guitarist walked around Cuba and recruited random musicians to come into a studio? Is that cool or not? It's cool that the random musicians were good, so I'm gonna say yes.

I was in Cuba when this was new, and all the street musicians played Chan Chan for the tourists. I got to think of it as kind of cheesy after that, but on listening to it again, it’s not bad.

I remember when this came out. We listened to it a lot in my highschool.. particularly my percussion class! I didn't like it much then. Now, it is very much for me. Very warm, I love the simple but lush percussion. I am really enjoying how languid Pueblo Nuevo is. El Cuarto de Tula has some great playing and listening, too.
I swear i’ve heard a lot of these songs as background in film and TV, most likely Dexter. Incredible playing. Incredible vibes front to back. Some of these tracks are absolutely beautiful. A LITTLE bit too long here and there but there are so many worse ways to spend an hour.

Honestly, I’m not even a massive jazz guy, but this one completely surprised me. It is just so easy to listen to and has the ultimate chilled vibe.From the second it starts, you can tell these musicians are just top-tier. The talent is insane, but it doesn't feel like they're trying too hard—it’s just super relaxed and natural. It’s the exact kind of record you want playing in the background on a proper sunny day while having a few beers in the garden.Definitely a massive, pleasant surprise. Perfect album to just put on, sit back, and completely unwind to. Solid four stars from me.

There’s an almost calypso feel to some of the songs on this record. It’s like Harry Belafonte introduced us to Caribbean music and culture in the 50s and BVSC re-introduced it to us in 1997, only this time instead of Trinidad, we got Cuba. The music is so passionate and even sensual, I could listen to them for hours. I typically complain about the length of albums if they exceed, say, 55 minutes, but there are exceptions, and this is one. Ibrahim Ferrer had a beautiful voice. Compay Segundo played guitar with passion and fire. Exquisite music that speaks to the soul. Went ahead and watched the documentary. Totally worth it. And scratch the calypso comparison - this is a unique music culture and should not share a spotlight with any other genre. 4 stars

The name sounds familiar but I don’t really know them Pre-Listen Thoughts: I never listen to Latin music, but that’s the whole point of this project is to do new things Favorite track(s): Not sure, they kind of blended together but I enjoyed it Post-Listen Thoughts: It was 85° outside when I put this on, and that feels right. It’s an hour long but it went by pretty quickly. The beats were fun, and the instrumentation was interesting. I didn’t understand any of the lyrics but that’s OK.

And on to the next one. I'll be honest, never heard of the act, and I'm not doing much research before I listen. So I'm going into this with a familiarity of 0/10. So, no time like the present, let's dive in with the album. "Chan Chan" Oh. OH! This is GOOD. No hablo español. So the lyrics aren't meaningful, but wow, the sound... this is gonna be fun one isn't it? OH! That TRUMPET! Yeah, I'm in love. I was about to talk about the spanish guitar and bongos being so subtle, but that muted trumpet was such a perfect spice. Yeah, if this is setting a tone I'm gonna love this album. "De camino a la vereda" This just... feels like Havana or San Juan. It feels tropical and sunny. And now I need to go make a rum drink, because DAMN. Caribbean, and specifically Cuban things like this are my JAM. "El cuarto de Tula" Yeah, this is GOOD. This whole album so far would go on my Tiki Bar playlist. It's just the right vibe. I'm loving the whole thing so far. The talent and ability is amazing, and you can just tell they are friends and having FUN. This feels like a party jam session that got recorded. "Pueblo Nuevo" Oh! PIANO. This is a different feel, and I'm here for it, nice piano jazz. This is the kind of stuff my grandfather and father used to play. (Grandfather was a professional jazz pianist) This gives me happy memories. "Dos gardenias" Ooooh, down beat. LOVE it. This feels... Smokey. Soulful and gorgeous. This is so good with that muted trumpet so forward. "¿Y tú qué has hecho?" Oooh, this has a more traditional sound, and the duet is stunning. The baritone and tenor are blending nice, even if the bari is sounding a little croaky. This is just great! Wait, is it the tenor that is croaky? This is weird, I can hear one of them, but not which. "Veinte años" Just realizing these are all latin standards. THAT'S why it sounds so familiar... this is COOL. They are so talented and making them all their own. This is also the first female voice this far forward, in another duet. "El carretero" Back to the party! That upright base is FAT, I'm loving how forward it is, and the washboard is a nice driving percussion in the background. This is just expertly crafted. "Candela" The percussion!! And then the ensemble singing. Gosh... this sounds exactly like what I'd hear in the bodegas in Tampa where I would buy cubanos when I was in High School. I can practically smell the stewed pork, the toasted bread, and the pickles. Now I want a sandwich. "Amor de loca juventud" Wow, this one is familar, it sounds so much like some stuff my grandfather would play. Actually a little distracting because of that, but so good! "Orgullecida" Huh... again! Except with a gorgeous country twang to it, this is a treat! Steel Guitar is so fun to listen to. It either sounds tropical or country, this does both at once! And once the trumpet kicked in, it almost sounded like a Louis Prima track. "Murmullo" More Piano! Yay! Oh... wow... this is GOOD. the brushed snares, the bass, and the duet with the piano, it's just nostalgic and so good. "Buena Vista Social Club" This feels like a wonderful extension of the previous track. Just with no vocals. "La bayamesa" And a nice smooth finish to the album, this wtapped perfectly and with the drink I made earlier I'm just floaring and happy. GREAT hour of music and experience. Gosh, this was a surprise. SO much fun, so enjoyable and weirdly nostalgic in odd ways. ALso some of the combinations of instrumentations were unexpected in charming and bewitching ways that seemed to blend genres and just make this album more unique. It was a joy to listen to from start to finish, and such a wonderful experience. Favorite Song: Candela Least Favorite Song: Buena Vista Social Club Album rating 9.5/10 Familiarity: 4/10 Would I listen to again:This is my favorite so far. This whole album has been put on my Tiki Bar playlist, and yeah, I would vibe with this, expecially on a beach with flip flops and a cuba libra in my hand.

If the Bueno Vista Social Club was a real place, I would love to go have a cocktail and watch people far more coordinated than me do some Cubano dancing. This was a fun listen.
This is just that tasty, tasty good groove that defies genre. Talented musicians that are dialed in with each other to create some amazing tracks. Stronger at the top than towards the end, but still a great album that makes you feel every note.
The overall vibe is excellent but it does peter out toward the end. I saw the movie again recently and recall a little more pep.

My Spanish isn't the best, but it doesn't need to be - this album can get you nodding along or shaking your foot without having to know a lick of the language. That is what good music should be able to do - transcend language. This album transcends language.

Het is een heel goed album, wel doodgedraaid als achtergrondmuziek door veel mensen. Het album begint heel sterk met chan chan wat heel veel diepte heeft in geluid. Niet alle nummers zijn daarna even sterk. Ik vind het wel zonde als je het album begint met je sterkste nummer, dan is er daarna minder om naar uit te kijken.
Afgelopen weekend hebben we Paris Texas gekeken van Wim Wenders. De muziek van Ry Cooder viel mij al op. Er is dus een docu van Wim Wenders over de totstandkoming van deze plaat met Ry Cooder. Bijzonder verhaal en het was bijna niet gemaakt omdat de Malinese muzikanten geen transitvisa kregen. Toen is er voor gekozen om traditionele Cubaanse nummers op te nemen met vergeten muziekanten die hierdoor een comeback maakten. Het album krijgt wel wat kritiek omdat Ry Cooder een westers toeristische sfeer op het album heeft gebracht. Als een soort Knorr wereldgerecht wat ook in die periode zijn intrede deed. Ik kan mij wel gedeeltelijk vinden in de die kritiek. Als je de eerdere opnames van Arsenio Rodriguez en Beny Moré hoort dan snap ik het wel dat echte liefhebbers dat beter vinden. Toch is het wel een leuke kennismaking met Son cubano die je anders niet zo snel had gehad en waren al deze muziekanten al vergeten. Het plezier van de muziekanten is hoorbaar op de plaat en blaas deze muziek weer nieuw leven in. Dit weekend ga ik de film kijken.
Heel mooi album. In de essentie is dit voor mijn gevoel ook een soort oermuziek. Natuurlijk is het gemoderniseerd, maar de basis voelt heel puur en eerlijk, als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel. Het is zo'n plaat die je prima op de achtergrond kunt opzetten terwijl je een glas wijn drinkt, maar waar je vervolgens toch steeds weer met je aandacht naartoe wordt getrokken. Er zit iets heel warms en sfeervols in, en als je er een beetje gevoelig voor bent kan het je ook echt raken. Wat ik vooral tof vind, is hoe los alles klinkt. Nergens voelt het alsof de muzikanten iets proberen te bewijzen; het lijkt alsof ze gewoon samen muziek aan het maken zijn en daar ontzettend veel plezier in hebben. En uiteraard liefde voor de trompet!

Thank God I got this on a warm summers' day while I was wearing a loose fitting linen shirt. Admittedly I was at work which is not part of the intended listening experience, but I still couldn't help but be transported to a cafe in Havana sipping on Mojito under the Caribbean sun while listening to the sounds presented on this album while watching 50's Chevrolets drive by. I genuinely do hope to visit and try experiencing this picture myself one day.

Yes! Albums like this are what this list is for. I’ve heard of Buena Vista Social Club and heard a few songs, but never listened to the album. What an amazing experience. It’s almost offensive to have albums like this on the same essential listening list as random British new wave albums from the 80s. People who hate this album either because it isn’t in English or honestly for whatever reason don’t have taste. So good and so glad this generator gave me a reason to listen to it finally.

Fun, relaxing, and just a straight up groove to listen to. You can just -tell- the history and culture that comes from this album. Cuban Jazz is now a good go-to for relaxing music!
Has such hypnotic qualities it made me accidentally miss my exit on my commute... It's just a simple vibe. There's little to bring against it. It even exudes some americana by incorporating the occasional song with that typical blues structure but cubanised. It's traditional but not stuck in a vacuum and ever fluent, making it timeless.

This album is significant in that it heightened my awareness and appreciation of Cuban music and it's great beauty. It also led to an awareness and appreciation of other Caribbean music styles. Ry Cooder did a great job documenting the music for which I am thankful.

Stuff like this is what makes this project so interesting. I never would have listened to this on my own. I have vague memories of this album being a big deal when it came out, but 16 year old me was too “cool” to give it a listen. Fantastic music, start to finish.
Really great jazzy sound.
Pretty joyful and fun music. I like the percussion and in your face instrumentation. There is a cuban guy who works at walmart in Fuquay and so in addition to rotisserie chickens, you can buy shredded cuban beef, flautas, plantains, for $5. He says its the best cuban food you can buy in the states outside of Miami. I'll have to take his word for it but I can attest that it is very good.
This was great, it was nice to finally escape out of the mid 80's anglo churn that has been given to my group for the past week. For maybe the only time in my whole participation in this, I enjoyed the songs with lyrics better than the instrumentals. The instrumentals were great too, but the voice in Cuban music is almost like an instrument in itself rather than the extremes of a musical garnish or the entire show like in so any other genres. The opening half of the album is definitely more upbeat and exciting but the latter half holds it own just as well, if with a different vibe. I think a more modern album assembler would've mixed the tracks up but this isn't too weird for the 90's in general. This was really nice to listen to and ran through all sorts of motifs and expressions. It's always good to get out of your comfort zone with music and be surprised by how much you've been missing.

Full of spirit and energy, fantastic background music
Listening to this while riding around the cloudy mountains in Mexico with my dad and uncle was quite the trip. Though I fell asleep near the end, so I put it on again near my grandmother's memorial. Hey Gordon, this gets the green from me (8/10, 5/5 on this scale) (Update: 4/5 on this scale)

Can't exactly comment on the lyrical content here but musically, this is very good. Great blend of Latin music with jazz and some African elements thrown in too. This is a bit long with 14 songs across an hour but I dont think there was ever a moment during this that I was bored. Not exactly a style of music I'm familiar with but this was a very enjoyable listen and I will be returning to this.

I think this kind of Afro-Latino fusion, it just gives such a strong sense of time and place, and identity which i love to hear it meandered a bit and felt a bit less distinct or captivating as time went on but it was still a very nice listen faves: Chan Chan, Candela 75/100

chill, happy, good vibe
Listened to on my Apple AirPods Max. There is no better way to describe this listening experience than joyfully relaxing. This is an hour long treatment for the ears, basking you in the delightful sounds of Cuba, as it fuses together several Cuban-specific styles of music. So often I found myself just letting my mind drift, imagining various scenes or just kind of staring off blankly, empty of tension or worry or such like, while enjoying the music. This is just classy all around, expert instrumentation delivering these tracks that are just so soothing and pleasant, while being substantive enough to really engage with, picking out fun little phrases in the piano or guitar, which pepper themselves all over the songs in sudden and fun ways. Each track is layered pretty deep, making the listens feel bright and alive with character, as instruments take turns speaking, or I find one in particular to focus on which maybe has a more subtle presence throughout. Personal highlights for me include the two piano-driven instrumentals “Pueblo Nuevo” and “Buena Vista Social Club”, which are super duper jazzy, the male/female duet of “Veinte Años“ which is just ridiculously smooth, and the lengthy “El Cuarto de Tula”, which has an earworm chorus and a great guitar solo towards the end. I don’t know if it fully utilizes it’s hour long runtime, as I did feel moments of repetition drag it a bit throughout, but it provides such a great listening atmosphere, creating an environment of comfort, whether you want to dance to some of the more upbeat tracks or stretch out and relax when things slow down. An excellent album.

This album is packed full of life and is perfect for the start of May as it really starts to get warmer. The story behind this one is very interesting and I’m excited to watch the movie that goes with this. The album cover as well is great at representing the music. Rating: 4.5

Heard this when it came out and its still as timeless. Just lovely music, I don’t speak the language and it's all the better for it as the music does all of the talking. The feel, the groove, the musicianship and feel between the players, it's just a delight, it's pretty universal as the score distribution on here shows, yeah some aren't going to like but it takes all types. 4.5 Star

4/5 - Positives: Live recording sound is sonically impressive and enjoyable to listen to, warm nostalgic sound of a bygone era (What I imagine Cuba sounding like in the 40’s/50’s every aspect feels as if it was still frozen in time), The music is very rhythmic giving laid back Caribbean, inviting live cuban concert which resonates joy among all who I assume was involved, Album cover art features a vibrant design highlighting culture and identity in one image. Verdict: 78-80/100. I’d be doing a disservice for anything lower than a 78, as I don’t generally listen to world music it lands where it stands but that’s based on personal preference. I remember this album! There was a time when its sound was everywhere! The musicianship really is fantastic. That rhythmic section. And the horns. Yeah.
This was massive for my age group when this came out. Every student seemed to have a copy of it as the cool sophisticated thing to listen to. Not sure I appreciated it back then but I do now. Unfortunately my Spanish isn't up to understanding the words but the music is beautiful. One of those things where you can be glad it got recorded.

I listen to this quite often in the background of my morning routines. It gives a nice start to the day. The quality of the album drops a bit towards the end, but the atmosphere carries through.
Oh man finally getting around to this after years of having it recommended to me. Warm, lively, uplifting and passionate. I've been familiar with the story behind this record for years but to finally hear the fruits of their labor is great.

This is an amazing album, and an absolutely iconic project in Latin America, full of the most skilled musicians Cuba had available at the time, and if you don't appreciate it just for being in a language you don't understand, sorry but you're an idiot

FIRST SONG - first impression, it’s very cuban with amazing and what i feel like are many instruments being played. - nice pitch, not too high - i was right, it’s cuban 🥹 - first song is amazing but does feel like a constant loop, tho i don’t mind it. SECOND SONG - an upbeat song - was dancing with this song it was fun - i do prefer more “mysterious” songs THIRD SONG -a bit less upbeat - the solo is going hard - i’m feeling good yet serious FOURTH SONG - mainly instrumental i think - i love instrumental songs - the piano is like the main singer FIFTH - a lot more mysterious i forgot to log further, from all the songs “Chan Chan” is n1 for me

This was just fun. It's not really my vibe but it was an experience. The instrumentals were A1 and when someone was singing it just made it better. Talking about singing, I would have like a bit more vocals and found some tracks to be repetitive. I'd listen to the album as a whole again but don't see a lot of replay value in singular tracks. It's one album that you are going to listen to and instantly feel so much happier. It's the perfect album to put on while having friends at the house, catching up with a bottle of wine. Listening to this just makes me want to book the first flight to Cuba. I'm really happy that I've discovered this.
While I think most people (including me) are probably familiar with the term Buena Vista Social Club due to the Broadway musical or just having heard about it talked about in music, I didn't know the complete story behind the album and I'd never listened to the album before. I love the music. Even though it's an album from the 1990's it has such a traditional and classic sound to it. And while I don't understand the lyrics they are singing, you just get a joyful feeling from them and such a feeling of the culture of Cuba. I enjoyed listening to this one even if it was out of my normal comfort zone of music.

Having experienced the joy of hearing Orquestra Ibrahim Ferrer & Ruben Gonzalez y su Grupo perform live, during their 1999 US tour, just a couple years after the release of this album, the joy and resilience of the Cuban people feels evident to me across the tracks on this album. Yet, at the moment of this listening, nearly three decades later, the melancholic elements of the music are what feel most evocative and haunting, with the Cuban peoples facing shortages of fuel and food in the face of yet another US blockade of the island...

Listening to this while the US is blockading Cuba. A little over a month after Bad Bunny played the Super Bowl halftime show. Latin music has a larger profile in the states then maybe it ever has, hard to deny the influence this record had.

I thought I was getting a punk album for some reason so when I heard the Cuban sounds I thought "fun intro, lets see where it goes". I try not to google anything before I listen so that way if its brand new I go in with an open mind. Once the second song hit, I knew I was in for a treat. It had me thinking I was back in Epcot, or an episode of Burn Notice. The tone and tempo makes these songs seem upbeat but I dont know the words. Either way, I dig it.
Buena Vista Social Club feels warm, relaxed and full of life, with beautiful rhythms that instantly put you in a laid-back pleasant mood. It’s the kind of album that makes you feel like you’re sitting in a sunny bar in Spain, listening to great musicians just enjoying playing together. 🎶☀️ Added to my album list ❤️!
Such impeccable grooving with all instruments throughout. I really loved so many of these songs and their vibes. The flow between songs in the album as a whole is so electric and wonderful. Songs with harmonies and without both always had stellar vocal performances and kept the movement of what the instrumentals started. As a piano player, Pueblo Nuevo was one of my favorites and I now want to try playing it in the near future. Amazing fusion of Latin music with so many other genres like jazz and even some country influences.

Thought the album was pretty great, I really vibed with the jazz/samba thing they had going on. My favorite was probably El Cuarto De Tula or Candela both had pretty high energy compared to the rest of the album and had alot of great parts in them. The album also had a lot of variety which I can appreciate. All the players and singers were at the top of their game, and each one felt like they contributed rather than be a detriment to the songs. 8/10.
Nice breath of fresh air! Or, storied and dusty air brining in a lot of mood and history. I looked over the global reviews and all the negative ones were along the lines of "not in English" or "fuck pinko commies" so yeah -- that's your gang if you don't like this one.

The opening track ‘Chan Chan’ hooked me in on this album almost immediately. It straight away made me feel like I was on a beach somewhere, cocktail in hand, feet up. The vibes are great and I’ve never listened to an album like this in full before - genuinely enjoyable from start to finish. 8/10.
