Meh. This dude has a few catchy songs, but is mostly an example of how big music corporations can use marketing to bulldoze slightly talented singers to the top of the pile and make them millionaire megastars.

I really enjoyed all of this album.

My first two-star album here. Generic brit-pop with cheesy lyrics based on dopey rhymes.

Gud va dehä stinker....liksom FR varför är det här på listan? Vad för inflytande har denna skiva? Instrumenten låter (bortsett från nån sång på akustisk gitarr) totalt färglösa, herr Williams är inte en bra/intressant sångare, låttexterna är skräp, och albumet har bokstavligen ingenting nytt att säga!! Robert Dimerys smak är usel då han inte väljer klassiker.

Better than what I thought it would be

The question about British singer/songwriter Robbie Williams is: which is larger, his talent or his ego? Clearly, he’s got a strong and beautiful voice. And clearly, he’s in love with himself. On ‘Let Me Entertain You’ when he deigns to ‘entertain’ the young girl of that evening, lifting her up and away from her dreary, boring existence and her clueless parents, he probably thinks of himself as providing a public service. I bet he strikes various poses in the mirror, admiring his good looks, while she’s giving him head. Tell me you can’t see that on the album cover. Look, the songs are well composed and arranged (although the lyrics are aimed exclusively to his fan base- young women), the LP is magnificently produced, the band polished; but Robbie’s unrestrained ego just spoils the whole thing. In fact, it’s so large that it literally crowds out any instrumental solos among a band that’s very good. No, I take it back, there was one brief guitar solo on ‘Clean’ (his self-congratulation for sobering up), but he was actually talking in the background over it. On ‘Old Before I Die,’ a chance for him to share significant insights into the human condition that he’s learning, he offers this bit of sagaciousness: ‘I hope to live to see the day the Pope get’s high.’ I mean, c’mon. 'Life Thru A Lens' starts off promising, with a high energy, positive vibe. ‘The world can change (quickly)…’ so enjoy every day, every moment; and, together, ‘let’s have a jolly good time.’ The only trouble is Robbie doesn’t really need you or me or even the sun to enjoy it with. We’re all, including the sun, revolving around him, and lucky just to be basking in his rays. And to end the LP with a spoken word ‘Fuck You, look at how great I became,’ to some teacher who, allegedly, didn’t see his gloriousness, is just in bad taste; and betrays his gross lack of humility. A real waste of a real talent.

This feels like a mediocre britpop album. This was a pleasant listen, but no ne of the songs stand out here as more than generic. There was a sprinkling of nice instrumentation here. I think I heard some mellotron on 'one of God's better people' which was a pleasant surprise on an otherwise mediocre track. On ‘clean’ Robbie tries to be sgt pepper with a middle of the road guitar solo. The hits are far too overplayed for me to take seriously, but there are some solid (read:three stars) songs on here most notably 'ego agogo' Overall I think this deserves a 2 star. It’s a pleasant but unremarkable listen.

Easier to take if you pretend you are Tina Belcher but I did not like this. Laughably bad lyrics; "I hope I live to see the day the Pope gets high" made me snort.

The album only contain a couple of good songs, in general bad

We have arrived at yet another Brit Pop album from the 90s/00s that seems to have no other purpose on this list than the author's familiarity and affection for the genre. I always find these inclusions particularly galling because I've encountered so many incredible lesser-known albums through this list, yet I'm also being forced to listen to innocuous bullshit like this. It's not bad, but it's certainly not ground-breaking, genre-defining, finely-crafted, or, for that matter, enjoyable to listen to. But at least I know that Robbie Williams is loving angels instead now. I can't think where my life would be without that bit of eternal wisdom, whatever the fuck it means 2/5

What an absolute cunt

Technically a 'did not listen' but I've heard it on many a car ride with my mum as a child. I've got a profound dislike of Robbie Williams and things similar due to that kind of over exposure and it just being very not what I'm in to.

Some big Robbie songs on here - Angels and Let me Entertain you. I prefer some of Robbie's later stuff but really enjoyed this throwback of an album.

Il caratteristico timbro vocale di Robbie Williams aggiunge un tocco interessante a canzoni che non lo sarebbero troppo di per loro. Bello il finale di 'Lazy days' e la successiva 'Life thru a Lens'. Le prime 3 sono belle cariche, poi si arriva a 'Angels', un capolavoro, che non scopro ora, che dà una bella svolta all'album. Non è facile ripartire dopo questa e la successiva perde qualcosa, soprattutto a livello del ritornello. Piccola nota curiosa: in 'Old before i die' RW si augura una vita lunga, il contrario di molti suoi colleghi. 'One of god's better people' ha sicuramente un bellissimo testo, ma non comprendo molto la canzone in sé. 'Let me entertain you' ok, fallo, sei bravo (non sono ironico). Le ultime tre dimenticabili, tranne la bonus track 'Hello Sir': wow! Le canzoni sono tutte scritte dallo stesso cantante, non pensavo. Il massimo se lo merita tutto.

This was alright

This album was horribly difficult to find on different apps and streaming services. And the tracks were so hit or miss it didn't feel worth the effort. The best thing I can say about this artist is that he seems to be similar to MIKA in terms of music style choices on some songs, and I fucking love MIKA. But this took so much effort to track down and I found some of the tracks to be rather dull and forgettable. Eh, maybe it was groundbreaking for its time but it was just okay in my opinion. Fave track: Clean. That one kicked ass.

This album isn't on Spotify that I could find, but I found a playlist with most of the tracks. The sound of this reminds me a bit of U2. I like it so far.

What really sells this album is his incredibly versatile voice. The songs maintain a consistent pop sound while branching off into various genres. Their production and instrumentation was done so well to really highlight what a top class vocalist Robbie is.

What a great and uplifting album. Robbie can sing just about anything, fronted by two of his biggest hits, each song belongs on the album and has a unique edge, definitely no standard, boring pop

Didn't realize I'd like Robbie Williams so much

I wanted to give this album a fair shot, but I'm not feeling it very much. The album has a fairly likeable poppy sound, if not particularly memorable. As a vocalist, Williams is fine, but ultimately neither here nor there. His voice is neither pretty nor gritty nor soulful enough to be particularly memorable. I can hear the Brit pop influences, but Williams didn't take them far enough to make it very interesting. The best song by far is "Killing Me," which is nicely arranged and features Williams' best vocal on the album. Fave Songs: Killing Me, Life Thru a Lens, Old Before I Die, Angels

However, I actually quite liked the album tracks I hadn't been overexposed to, so fair play to the chap I guess. Fave track - "Lazy Days" and "Life Thru a Lens" both struck me very favorably, possibly just because I was expecting horribleness!

Angel and Let Me Entertain You are iconic songs but the whole album is just a mediocre example of 90’s Brit pop. A lot of Robbie William songs are total misses.

A nostalgic classic - the man's a great poet

I will sing unrelatable songs about being rich and famous as a form of therapy and you will listen and I will sell more records that will make me more rich and more famous but I’ll still be miserable so I’ll just keep making more of these and because it’s got a big expansive BritPop influenced sound and I contributed the odd lyric or two I’m now an artist allbeit one with a fairly grating and unsubtle voice lacking in nuance and subtlety (sing big!) and Angels will be played at countless funerals and weddings and montages for charity appeals and let me show you my Mick or Freddy tribute act on Let Me Entertain You (this will open every gig I ever do henceforth - easy!) and the money’s nice but not the fame but what choice do I have?

First Listen (in a long time). I love the song Angels. A couple of the songs I remember from long ago but barely. I loved some of the later Robbie Williams albums, I don't know why I never got into this one. I need to hear it more to judge it properly. 2/5 for now.

Literally an inch better than George Michael´s Faith, and that´s it. Find both horrible to hear. Although I have given 2 stars for George, which now I regret, because he sings better.

Never heard of this guy before. First impression; some nice Matthew Sweet style power pop. First 5 songs are catchy and hooky and well executed. The finish of the album more of the same. Worthy of further exploration for sure. 3.5 🌟

Solid album

it was okay. the voice was kind of annoying at some times but it was completely average.

Not at all what I'd expected - in a good way. I've always been aware of Robbie Williams in that "oh right, he's always been huge in the UK ... former boy band guy?" way but I don't know that I'd ever heard anything by him. A bit of reading about this album shows that he wanted to break away from his previous career and was heavily influenced by the Britpop that was so prevalent/popular at the time. After even one song I'd say that's mostly accurate - I like a lot of that mid90s rock subgenre but find a lot of negatives in most of it...some combination of overly compressed loudness and constant whinging (Oasis at their worst, although they were great at their best... I digress). This is ... better? This has a good mix of instrumentation - layered guitars (but not too thick), heavy drums, cool keyboards, the occasional piano (on the semi-cheesy ballad "Angels" in particular), the vocals are mostly not annoying me - tons of melody overall... "Killing Me" has a really great chord progression - might be my favourite. Negatives: when/if I start listening to the lyrics I start to question my judgement ("Angels") which is exactly why I try to ignore lyrics if possible. So yeah, they're a little distracting to me at times - simplicity, cliched, etc (god help me if #$@$ Bon Jovi is anywhere on this list). So some of the songs are probably skip-worthy (e.g. "South of the Border") but even on that one there are a few cool instrumental parts (i.e. the funky organ post-solo). Anyways - for the most part this is a good and fun rock album I'd never have given a look at before. 7/10 4 stars

I loved this album when it came out, and still a classic. I remember being entirely sceptical of Robbie, being as he was a former Take That member and initially feeling validated in that by his awful cover of Faith (thankfully not on this album). But his brash take on Britpop was infectious and I always felt his arrogance was somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Starten av albumet, 3 første, er ikke så mye å si noe om. Har jo Angels, Let me entertain you som trekker opp. Old Before I Die var også eb god låt.

The unexpectedly good Robbie debut. Snarky, catchy and cute.

Starts off strong as a passing of the torch from Oasis to Blur kind of LP, strong guitar leads with a healthy dollop of facetious wit. Wilts in the back half unfortunately, swapping sardonic rippers for Keane-esque Britpop ballads dripping in cheese.

Let's get this statement out of the way- "Angels" carries this and gets the album up to 2* almost by itself. It's an undeniably great pop song that deserves its place in the canon. The rest of the album has the air of "pop artist trying to prove his worth as a solo-act by going rock", channeling all sorts of influences from the current scene and beyond to see what would stick. "Let Me Entertain You" is a rip-roaring ride and the Beatles-esque "Clean" is enjoyable if slight. The rest ranges from decent balladry to cookie cutter 90s Britpop. Good for background but doesn't hold up to much scrutiny (especially those lyrics). Also, what on earth was he thinking with Hello Sir? It's laughable.

How did this make it on the list? Did he pay to be on here? Killing Me is the only good song, and even then. CANDY AND ROCK DJ AREN'T EVEN ON HERE. Looks v hot on the album cover though.

Noticed this was the one with angels, old before I die, and let me entertain you, so hopes are high. I've never actually heard a lot of the non singles on this, but they're not bad. Almost carried to a four on the strength of roaring along to let me entertain you, but not quite

Sono partito con talmente tanto pregiudizio che alla fine la mia esperienza non è stata brutta come aspettavo. In generale, a volte la voce di Robbie mi ha infastidito (soprattutto quando fa la voce nasale graffiante, che un po' mi ricorda Liam), alcune canzoni non sarebbero male, ma le trovo denaturalizzate da arrangiamenti troppo pop e strumenti suonati in maniera super pulita. Avvolte, sembra tutto finto e sterile, spesso a discapito anche della voce di Robbie. Alla fine comunque, ripeto, non è stata un'esperienza pessima. 2

Un po' ero curioso e speravo di rimanere sorpreso: non a questo giro. Forse la cosa che mi ha sorpreso di più è la voce di Robbie che comunque non è male e c'ha i suoi momenti anche interpretativi. Il resto è un mazzo di canzoni palesemente modaiole che spunta un po' tutte le caselle per vendere (pure il punk rock commerciale alla Green Day). L'ho odiato un po' ma non tantissimo, e mediamente ho avuto l'impressione che si sia voluto comunque fare un po' più del minimo sindacale. I musicisti chiaramente so tutti bravi, il batterista fa pure un po' lo splendido su qualche pezzo, ma col budget che avrà avuto sto disco mi pare il minimo. Non mi sento di dare 1 per il fatto di aver percepito un minimo di sforzo, però per me è tipo un 1.5.

Dopo i primi 2 minuti il senso di morte e dolore era forte e volevo che la fine arrivasse il prima possibile. Poi forse perché c'ho fatto l'orecchio o perché lavorando non ho prestato troppa attenzione sono arrivato in fondo abbastanza velocemente. Innanzitutto bisogna dire che il sound anni 90 era veramente terribile, in questo disco a tratti ho sentito alcune soluzioni di arrangiamento e produzioni interessanti però a servizio di un prodotto discutibile. Questo è un disco da 1.5 però alla fine gli do 1 più che 2 perchè risentendolo mentre scrivo sto pensando "oh cristo".

Que vous le croyiez ou non, quand Robbie Williams ne fait pas de doigts d'honneur à la Coupe du Monde ou n'intervient pas de façon totalement injustifiée dans une émission de télévision dédiée aux Inconnus, il conçoit des albums. Et qu'est-ce que ça donne, alors ? N'en déplaise au père de mon compagnon d'écoute eltrapeze dont les goûts sont ouvertement critiqués par une majorité de musicologues en exercice, cet album nous donne la sensation d'être retenu prisonnier d'un interminable épisode de Glee ou d'High School Musical. Seul point positif au milieu de cette pagaille : mon apparition sur la pochette du projet tout en haut à gauche. J'étais en effet ce jour-là en train de faire la queue à la pharmacie où je me rends habituellement pour acheter un shampoing anti-pelliculaire lorsque, survenant de nulle part, surgit Robbie Williams accompagné d'une foule de journalistes et de photographes. Ledit Robbie se posta rapidement devant l'une des caisses, le regard dirigé vers les sachets de pastilles mentholées avant d'exiger qu'on l'y prenne en photo dans cette position. La pharmacienne, dépassée par la situation, tentait tant bien que mal de prendre ma commande mais je n'osai pas demander mon shampoing devant pareille assemblée. Je posai donc mes lunettes de soleil sur mes yeux pour demander mon shampooing sans être reconnu, et ce moment fut immortalisé par la photo qui sera choisie pour être la pochette de cet album.

Ici on est très fan de Robbie Williams et on ne s'en cache pas, n'en déplaise à robserpillère. Ce dernier essaye depuis plusieurs mois de moquer mon éducation musicale, comparant les artistes ayant bercé mon enfance tels Robbie Williams, à des boysband obscurs comme par exemple les 2be3. Ces informations sont bien sûr totalement erronées, ce que je peux en revanche vous dire en toute franchise, c'est que rob, se croyant musicien avec sa guitare de merde, reprend des chansons de groupes tel Tragedie ou encore de l'illustre K-maro. Les performances musicales émanant de son bec à merde se passent evidemment de commentaire. A suivre donc.

A curiosity here, trying to work out whether he wants to be the lead singer in a band or a solo artist. The band bits work week. The singles are overblown.

Easy listening pop rock/classic rock. Fairly good! Really like Ego Agogo, funky, upbeat. I enjoyed this album enough to add it to my library :)

В пику вот этому всему коммерческому мракобесию, которое выдаёт себя за рок, но стыдливо прячет под кожанной курткой петушиные перья попса, Робби Вильямс радостно и горделиво несёт свой попс-крест, при этом совершенно не чураясь реализовывать в его рамках некоторых рок-идеи. Причём идеи успешные, в отличие от того же Косплея. Альбом, конечно, не шедевральный, и особой глубины тут не найдёшь, но начало, например, получилось очень даже бойким и жизнеутверждающим. Первые 4-5 песен заходят на ура, а открывашка вообще встречает бронебойным гитарным риффаком, который и какая-нибудь группа Блюр не постеснялась бы забрать себе в каталог. Ангелы — отличная баллада, мощная, жизнеутверждающая. Иго Агого (че) — вообще лучшая песня на пластинке, вероятно. Вторая часть зашла поменее, всё-таки статус попс-звезды, видимо, обязывает писать хуету вроде One Of God's Better People. Впрочем, гитаристы там угарное стаккато запилили, что немного сбивает попсовую спесь с этой шельмы. Ну и песня Clean, например, довольно хороша (я так понял там про отказ от разгульного образа жизни, ну чтож, одобряем), а на Let Me Entertain You угарный клип запилен с закосом под блек-митольный образ. Ну и в аутро там поэмка запилен, в которой Робби отказывается лизать жопы нормисам и предлагает какому-то там хейтеру из прошлого полизать жопу ему, что, конечно, не без кринжетцы небольшой, но мною полностью понимаемо и даже ощущается немного впечатляюще. В общем и целом да хороший поп-рок альбом, энергетика есть, гитарки есть, мотивов завезли, пусть и без очевидных прямо хитов. Больше всего смутили песни, в которых было полуречитативное пение (вроде заглавной), но в рамках заданного жанра — да на здоровье. Ну 8/10 изи

К Робби Уильямсу негатива не имею. Знал о нём годами до того, как узнал о существовании Робина Уильямса. По ящику его клип на трек Sin крутили. Я ещё предполагал, что у него сын родился, вот он и радуется. Даже то, что сольную карьеру он начал после участия в группе Take That, я тоже знал благодаря мобильной версии "Кто хочет стать миллионером?" Но альбом никакой, если честно. В плохом смысле попсовый, коммерческий, праздный звук. И при этом за пару прослушиваний ухо не выцепило ни одного трека, ни одного мотива. Заглавная композиция на это претендует, но всё равно звучит слишком genreric. Будто написана для вымышленного персонажа художественного фильма про восходящую поп-звезду. Конечно, слушабельно, даже негатива не вызывает. Хотя пустоту можно вполне расценивать за форму негатива в отношении произведений культуры. Поэтому даже не "норм".

This album absolutely bops! I'm from the U.S., so I've never heard of this guy. Great energy in this album and super poppy without feeling dumb. Reminds me of Dishwalla but better (and I love Dishwalla). The songs have some variety and definitely emotion. My favorite songs are: Old Before I die, let me entertain you, Lazy Days, and 100% Angels - that's the best song on the album. I'm giving this an 8/10, but it could be higher due to the fact that it is hard to find all these songs in my country. I'm sure this album is good though and highly recommend it.

A pop singer ripping off Oasis. It sounds almost as bad as that description suggests. However, the songwriting is full of earworms, which is what made this such a successful pop album. Personally, I find "Angels" and "Old Before I Die" slightly irritating - but they are certainly memorable and instantly recognisable (at least to me as a British person who lived through the 1990s). So the album has to get some credit for being annoyingly catchy. 2/5.

Cool britpop sound with some nice songs and a fair bit of filler. 'Angels' is the standout, when that second verse hits you can understand why it became such a popular song.

Let me entertain you vind ik een leuk nummer, verder vond ik het slappe hap.

Overall non-offensive sound; sounds perfect for either the intro or outro credit for a movie depending on the track. Makes me want to stare out of a window of a bus as I take a long journey. Lazy Days and Angels are Outro, South of the Border and Let Me Entertain You are Intro credits. Old Before I Die is the where the kids ended up 35 years later in the coming of age block buster of the summer.

Went through a lot of trouble to find all the songs on this album on youtube and Spotify, and really wish I hadn't. Great voice and pretty bland everything else. It felt like it was a pop album written by a guy for the sole purpose of making him famous. I'm still not sure how I want to use my 1 rating. Like I hated this album but since it was some manufactured pop it musically wasn't completely unlistenable, so I feel like I've got to save it for when those albums come along. But yeah not a Robbie fan.

Commercial radio is chock full of artists like this and that’s why I don’t listen to it. Happily, I haven’t heard of Robbie until now. I’m pleased that despite the global success of this LP, it never charted in Canada or the US.

‘Life Thru a Lens” by Robbie Williams (1997) Hyper-produced pop—the kind of thing you’d expect from a boy band member gone solo. Pleasant enough to listen to, but not seriously. Williams’ voice is a high throat mewl, desperately chasing the melody, with varied quality across limited range, and incapable of either of mellow lows or powerful highs. Lyrics are too dependent on forced rhymes, and lack depth. Overall, so-so. But a nice collection of cameras on the album cover. 2/5

Great debut album. Poppy when it needs to be and lyrical when it has to be.

I was never a fan of Brit pop. After listening to this I can confirm that I'm still not a fan.

Just generic English pop rock. "Angels" is familiar, haven't heard it in years. 5/10.

I don't mind Britpop, and Robbie Williams is the classic example of it, but I also didn't grow up with it. Totally fine; don't need to listen again, not mad about it, wouldn't turn it off. Just fine.
