Reviews (page 2 of 13)

Legendary. Honestly such a masterpiece and a lesson in impressive music. As someone who plays multiple instruments, I'm a bit in awe of this

I've listened to quite a bit of jazz before but it has been a while since I last sat down and listened to an album. I for example, haven't listened to Davis' earlier records. The style seems a lot shorter and more upbeat than his later bluesy works which I am more familiar with.

THaNK GOD we started off good, I listened to this on my own a little over a year ago and it has to be including as one of my favourites from Miles' discography. (Thanks in part to my lovely king Gerry Mulligan) I remember transcribing Jeru and a couple other lines from this album way back then. It is cool jazz so easy on the ears compared to the avant-garde stuff that I blast while playing plastic trumpet in the shower Two 10s on this album and it never really drops in quality. Well I'm showing these to my friends so guess its time to actually write real reviews (Hi Eugene) I still think this project is better than Bags' Groove (And tpab). Bishop gotta listen to some more jazz this is overground twin ✌

Man I love jazz and Mile's is the master. It might not be his Magnum opus, but it is still damn good. My only complaint is that a lot of the songs are short and I think they could have benefitted by giving them more room to breathe. Makes me wonder why I don't listen to jazz more often. Favorite Track - Move Least Favorite Track - Moon Dreams ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a ripper of an album. Tight harmonies, percussion and solo work. Just a fantastic jazz album front to back. At barely half an hour long, great album to throw on while cooking dinner for friends for romantic partner.

Love it

My namesake

a really fantastic set of arrangements, recorded very well (certainly for '49-'50!), and with some excellent playing by musicians who would go on to be extremely famous.

Classic

Soooooo cool

I think the title says it all.

This hits

Legendary! What can I say? It’s Mikes Davis and it is absolutely amazing. I don’t love Darn That Dream just because I don’t love that style of vocal jazz but that’s a quibble. 9.5/10

Listening to it for the first time in many years, I still enjoy this moment in Miles' career. I find his melodies hard to pick up, though they make their own sense as the flow by--and that's an enjoyable relationship, as a listener. I enjoy being juked by the master, just as I enjoy surprising turns in a conversation. As I listen, I wonder--how much music theory did his early listeners have? How much familiarity with the blues, or with ragtime, or with Rachmaninov? I imagine that those folks were generally more aware of those histories than adults in today's America, where music education was defunded over a generation ago. As a young person, I fancied myself an intellectual, so of course I listened to jazz. I had Bitches Brew on my turntable throughout the last two years of college--but also the Birth of the Cool. Miles was apparently a passionate man whose passions leaned into the dark alleys of the male psyche of his day. Interesting that it's dressed up nice here. Bitches Brew was on my turntable regularly

Definitely cool 😎. I love jazz, so this was right up my alley.

Really enjoyed it. Great background music.

Pass the epidural and sign me up.

I’m quite intimidated by Miles Davis. I don’t know if I give him my stars willingly or he takes them by force.

5 - but you gotta be in the mood for it.

35 minutes of jazz perfection. I loved "Moon Dream."

The biggest issue with this project is that it's too short. I've recently started to listen to a lot of jazz and Miles Davis is definitely one of my favorite artists. His music is just so effortless.

Very cool

So influential it’s a struggle to hear this with fresh ears, but if you want to try, focus on how intimate this sounds, even with a nine-piece band, and then you’ll start to hear the unique brilliance that’s still potent in these tracks, and why it still stands on its on feet even compared to where these artists grew from here.

A gem, terrific, in my opinion best in class; stands the test of time & delivers a most delightful jazz experience.

Miles Davis was at the forefront of changing the direction of jazz during his career. Birth Of The Cool was the first big shift…chamber jazz. In the coming years, he lead jazz into hard bop, orchestral jazz, modal jazz, electric jazz and rock/funk jazz. It all blows me away.

Incredibly easy listening and equally as enthralling

Well, it is. This is a great album, a must for Jazz enthusiasts.

Benchmark. All time classic of new jazz, the beginning of something different. Personally I'm a huge fan of "Bitches Brew" but this record is amazing as well.

The best

50s jazz and Miles Davis are two of my favorites. Easy 5 stars.

this is what i call music for locking in

One of the greatest jazz albums in the history of ever with Kind Of Blue the king of all jazz albums!!!!

A beautiful jazz album, it somehow reminds me of moments from childhood when I used to watch the cartoon Tom and Jerry on an old TV.

Incredible

This album was great. It had variety, short and great rhythms.

Such a great album by a great artist

have been waiting to listen to this & it did not disappoint. great, mellow listen

As a trumpet player myself you gotta love Miles Davis. His music is very cool. It must have been fun seeing him in the clubs and chilling with the music.

fav songs: move moon dreams budo boplicity israel cool, sophisticated, elegant 90/100

With Miles Davis every album marks a new musical direction or innovation, and many of his songs have become standard jazz performance pieces. This album marks the departure from bebop to cool jazz. Great stuff!

Miles is so cool

I really liked it it had calm calm funky energy.

I feel like I'm driving a taxi in NYC at night in the rain and I'm here for it

While jazz seems to typically favor the long form play this one has a bunch of “singles” leading to a wonderful sampler of various jazz elements

top demaize

It's simply amazing!

5 stars

I love Miles Davis

v peaceful & fun

First album I've gotten that I already had downloaded! The album with the most accurate name ever. It's so cool. I've listened to it like 40 times man

Great album! Miles Davis is amazing! Highly recommend!

I’ve often found Miles hard work. However, I’ve really enjoyed spending the weekend with this album. It’s got a really interesting mix of Boogie Woogie Bugle vibes with an edge of … cool, I guess. I’d happily spend many a Sunday morning chilling with a coffee.

This is indeed the birth of cool

Seminal jazz album. Released in 1957, but the recordings are from 1949/1950. It's the earliest Miles album I own, I've got the 'Complete' edition ion CD, which is the way to go if you're interested. Get this album and be cool like Miles.

It was pretty cool, chill. I did not connect emotionally to it too much tho.

❣️

Was sooo catchy!

un disco de casi 80 años! Impresionante como sigue siendo relevante.

very nice

Very good! Stands the test of time!

Excellent

Probably a top 5 Miles Davis album for me, not for any one track but because of the richness of the whole experience.

This is truly one of the all time great jazz records, and really one of the top 100 music recordings of all-time. The bummer is it took 250 assignments in this project to get here. And even in those 200+ listens, the lack of jazz music is very disappointing. I'm hoping the next 800 listens ahead for me makes up for it.

Classic

(90/100)

miles davies always 5/5

Another from the Goat.

Dat cool waz borned

Fast and punchy with an intensity that is unique to Miles

music is love

I'm not a huge fan of cool jazz, but man Miles Davis is such a pleasure to listen to.

It was during my hour long commutes, absolutely loved it 10/10

One of the most pleasantly surprising things about is this list is realizing just how much I like jazz.

Lively jazz. It makes for great background music for entertaining

The fact that I love jazz yet feel like I don't really know specific albums (or even movements, and aside from the truly big names, artists) is perhaps best evidenced by having never listened to this particular Miles Davis album. Hell, I even somehow have Kind of Blue and Tribute to Jack Johnson on vinyl but have never heard Birth of the Cool. Anyway, every jazz recorded I've been assigned on here has been 4 or 5 stars, and I expected this to be the same. It did not disappoint. Instant add to the top of my list. The entire band fires on all cylinders right from the onset. I've listened to it twice now, and I'm sure there will be many more to come. Easy 5 stars.

Perfect album,a true classic …

Another essential record

YAY MILES

This is a time and place album, I probably listened to this thing a hundred times the fall of 2020. It was a calming presence at a weird time to be alive

Just what I needed today, an old friend. Embarrassed to say I originally purchased this CD not because I loved the music but to try and cultivate an image. As a single young man I thought having a dash of Davis and Monk and Adderley would help me outcompete my peers who were all Sublime and Smashmouth. The classics won me over, of course.

Probably the coolest album title of all time. This dude was so good, he called out the fact that he was inventing a new genre and it fucking stuck. Nuanced, tasteful, vintage, and a type of jazz that I bet (almost) anyone can find some joy in. Someone shoot me if I ever give a Miles Davis album anything less than a 5.

One of the greatest jazz (and all around) albums of all time.

Great album. Miles is The Cool. Five stars

Have listened to bitches brew before but this is more trad, definitely a classic and very accessible

Love it!

True classic

Smooth very hip vibe

the jazz is kicking thru me WOAH

To modern ears, this doesn’t sound as innovative as it apparently was at the time, but close listening is rewarded over and over again. Gil Evans’ arrangements in particular are intricate and intoxicating. The 2019 remaster does an excellent job increasing the auditory separation of the different horns as well as making the rhythm section more present. A masterpiece.

I’ve heard this before and i own it too. Can’t remember the last time i listened to it but must’ve been over a decade ago, and it feels like im listening for the first time again. I didn’t realize this is a compilation and was released in the late 50s; I thought it was released in the early 50s but it was just each of these 78s was recorded in ‘49 and ‘50. So anyway, this is the first of many times Miles changed the course of american music. It’s interesting how there’s still plenty of bebop influence in here rather than a complete stylistic break, though I’m sure someone who knows more about jazz could give me a rundown of everything new introduced here. You can also hear the roots of hard bop and modal jazz in here. And there’s plenty that fits the cool jazz style that recognize. I’ve gone back and relistened 3 times now and am still catching things I missed and now I’m going to have to go through my whole miles collection. I’m getting tired of rating everything so high but I can’t help it, this album rules.

Excelente

Cool jazz indeed. Whilst I couldn’t tell you any of tunes off the top of my head, it all just flows so beautifully and the players are all absolute top-notch. A masterpiece.

good, I like it

Amazing to see how gifted Miles was at such a young age (in early 20's when these recordings were made)--at both trumpet and band leader and arranging. A fun listen to music that bridges the Bebop and hardbop genres. Slower tempo and melodic phrasing heralds the cool jazz that followed. This complication was released about 6-7 years after the recordings were first made and released as singles or whatever.

Ya like jazz?

Perfect album name. It’s more laid back than some of the craziest Coltrane, but it’s so undeniably cool

foundational, quietly seismic record // initially underappreciated and misunderstood, some critics didn’t even recognize it as jazz; for example, winthrop sergeant called it “charming and exciting” // this is cool jazz at its finest, purest // arrangements feel architectural yet weightless // to ke it gives an impressionistic atmosphere: airy, light, softly luminous // attention to tone and blend is meticulous and nothing is overstated // restrained, but beautiful use of space as power // feels like a study in aural poetry rather than virtuoso display // despite being historically transformative it does it beautifully without ever sounding self-important

Heck yeeeeeah!!!!

Dang I thought I knew this one. I’m familiar with a lot of Miles Davis records but for some reason I’ve never listened to this. I can hear how it slots into his œuvre…and although I’m aware of its historic significance it sounds so “classic” that none of it sounds particularly groundbreaking from this distance. I’m more about that On The Corner / Bitches Brew vibe. Would give it 4.5 if poss, gonna round it up bc he’s the MAN.

Withholding IS cool

Brilliant jazz classic

I like Jazz.

Took a couple of listens but super cool now.

Felt like Ryan Gosling in Lalaland what can I say it's a classic! The dynamic and the freedom of this record is addictive, doesn't feel like background music at all. There's a certain clarity and tone you can hear with no words needed.

Fantastic

i enjoyed this greatly

I want to live in a world where this is the epidemy of cool.

Masterpiece

I mean, this is just an objectively incredible jazz album, and I’m never going to be able to write anything that hasn’t already been said about it. I will say that naming it “Birth of the Cool” and it being one of the best jazz albums of all time is truly the musical equivalent of Babe Ruth calling his shot.

Smooth and cool jazz, excellent for relaxing and working.

This is the very finest of all music. There are no words to describe how much this music makes me feel good. Miles Davies was a genius. And his music will last forever, which is very cool.

What a great period of his output. Short, sweet, and to the point.

Album #28: Birth of the Cool - Miles Davis Genre (W): Cool jazz No singles. I have listened to this album several times. Thoughts: This is one of my favorite albums because of the compositions and the sound! I love jazz music a lot, for instrumentals and production. Plus, the compositions usually call for a lot of technical ability. Favorite songs: All of it!!

It's jazz, pretty much always a 5 from me.

This is classic Jazz and it's Miles Davis. It's gorgeous, it's designed for passive or critical listening. It's not my genre, but it's something I've been leaning more towards as I'm getting older, I don't know why, but the music speaks to me a little more.

One of the best to ever play

Śnieg padał jak szedłem rano do pracy puszysty sypki lśniący błyszczący

First time actually listening to Miles Davis. Loved every minute of it!

I remain a jazz ignoramus but lovely to participate in one of the greats (hw)

Classic of the highest order.

Very early Miles before he became angry and isolating. Always amazing music.

What’s cooler than being cool? Miles Davis.

Haven't listened to this Miles yet. Really enjoyed it while making dinner. Loved Jeru.

Miles Fucking Davis.

Classic

I mean, it's an instrumental jazz album, very well-written. So what else can I give it than 5, duh?

Cooler than ice cream

Love me some Miles Davis!

Don’t listen to jazz much but I love it.

Not my favourite Mikes Davis recording but nonetheless a brilliant genre shaping album.

I would buy this on vinyl.

ok wow. essential jazz album

Strong from the get-go, the slower ones add a nice balance to the compilation, I really enjoyed it.

A classic when in the right mood

The number of times Miles Davis said “no, THIS is jazz now” is amazing.

love jazz

Truly the birth of cool

Feel like I just spent the last 33 minutes in a supper club like Wildfire or something. Great album really digging how chill and relaxing it is.

The coolest

all time top jazz album

Jazz classic top to bottom. One of Miles's best albums

This is chill and relaxing. I liked this a lot.

Great!

I was so hooked on this during my childhood, will never get old

Too cool for school

Amazing

A tight 30 minute album of excellent jazz playing. Just plain cool.

Not as good as kind of blue but still great

Man, I don't why there's so many Jazz genres. 5/5

Aptly named

Ótimo! Deu play, seguiu com as atividades e o som ficou a trilha sonora ideal pro dia a dia

Like the music itself, no words are required. Just easy on the ears, mind and soul.

Großartig!

Whenever I get one of the great jazz albums on here, I keep writing that I don't know very much about jazz, which is still true. But here, especially here, you can hear how good it is.

This is what genius sounds like.

Day 17 - Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis I've heard some of this album before. My father had this when I was growing up. Move - 10/10. This absolutely COOKS. I wish I could ever have played trumpet like this. Jeru - 10/10. Silky smooth and tight Jazz. No notes. Moon Dreams - 9/10. The only word I have for this is "cool." Venus de Milo - 10/10. Outstanding. Great harmonies with the doubled instruments. Budo - 9/10. Back to the more up-tempo music, and it's still great. Deception - 9/10. Top-class musicianship from the whole nonet. Godchild - 9/10. A different feel than the first side of the album. Still great, though. Boplicity - 10/10. As smooth as it gets. Rocker - 10/10. Perfection. Israel - 9/10. Smooth and sophisticated. Rouge - 9/10. Subdued but still truly great. Darn That Dream - 8/10. The only track with vocals, and the vocals detract a bit, but not much. Overall Rating - 4.67/5 (9.33/10). I love the "Cool" school of Jazz, and you can tell that this is one of the foundations of it, because you can hear how the rest of its practitioners take their inspirations from here. Everyone in the group gets a chance to shine... and takes it.

Great jazz! Miles Davis is such a huge part of jazz so its no surprise this album was great

Essential.

Man i loved this one. Perfect NY walking music. Dare i say better than kind of blue? FIVE!

Simply one of the greatest...a milestone.

Not my favorite Miles Davis album just in terms of the style and mood (hard to compete with "Kind of Blue"), but unimpeachable and cohesive. Great listen. (5/5)

QoA Vesper.

Love how the music flows together as one piece, each individual song works on its own but flows better as one collective piece of music.

such good memories. perfect dinner music. perfect after dinner music

We used to have a great jazz bar that played music like this. I miss it. This took me back, in a good way. I also love the album title, although that's a lot to live up to!

Miles is a true musical icon and one of my all time musical heroes! I pretty much love all his stuff do not a difficult one for me to rate.

I don’t understand jazz but this was cool and smooth and really had an evocative atmosphere

I believe Miles Davis is among the USA's most important musicians. Rating this album on just a listen, I think, flies past the importance of this transitional album in the jazz timeline. I wonder what I would feel if I heard it for the first time at it's release date. I think this would be a wonderful listen for a newcomer to this sound. It's wonderfully relaxed, melodic and rich. It's not overdone, overstated or hard to follow. It's a lovely and digestible entry in the vast universe of jazz.

Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz man. Pretty solid

The ultimate rainy day album. This feels like such a bridge between hard bop and swing of the 40s and early 50s and what was to come in the world of jazz in just a few short years. Miles was always Miles ahead.

Finally some real music

It’s of course incredible

No notes. I love Jazz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the birth of cool

The coolest.

This brightened up my whole day. Playing in the background while I was working.

There are those who would have every single miles Davis album on here. And I’ll be fair, he is one of the few artists who should be represented several times. Now personally I wouldn’t have every thing he did here. But this, kind of blue, bitches brew and the pop one he did in the 90s are essential to start to wrap your head around how important he is. I’d probably be persuaded for one or two more. Tutu or the stuff he did with Mike Stern on guitar also suggest themselves. This is superb. The musicians are of course among the very best. The compositions change things. Miles is one of the towering figures of jazz and this one would have been enough to prove that. But being a restless spirit he went on to change the genre 3 or 4 more times. It is notable that since his death jazz innovation has slowed. 5 stars.

Can’t beat Miles Davis

Always love Miles Davis!

It’s Miles Davis. Of course this rules.

Oldrr Miles is best Miles

🥶🧊❄️🌨️🏔️Cool

Minha preferida é a musica Darn That Dream, linda canção.

I mean this is pure gold, there is not much to say. In any situation listenable

Nothing more to add

cinco diez quincemil

Classic - cool jaz

Organic cocaine jazz

I kept starting this over after realizing I had listened to the whole album and the Spotify algorithm had taken me to more Miles Davis. I wasn't as familiar with this as with Kind of Blue, which is a go-to. Honestly I couldn't tell you the names of any songs on either album, but I know that I like it.

This is brilliant, laid back jazz. It's the type of record that makes you feel like you should be sitting in a dark room with a whiskey and a cigar. It is more accessible than some of his later music and will get repeat listenings from me

perfection

Classic album from classic guy like his earlier stuff better than his later. This one's a keeper for sure

Finally some jazz… not enough of it on this list. This isn’t my favorite Miles record, but it’ll suffice. He’s not even my favorite jazz trumpeter and I think his second quintet is where it’s at. Check out Lee Morgan if you want something more exciting. He could’ve been more legendary than Miles if he hadn’t been murdered by his wife…

This is not a top tier Miles album for me, but it's still better than most of the music out there.

The album title says it all.

Very soothing

Off the charts swanky

This is pretty seminal isn't it. The Birth of the Cool, it's right there in the name. Just changing the course of jazz history.

As a big jazz fan, I've always been okay with saying that, while I love the musicians he recruited and got into the mainstream (John McClaughlin, Herbie Hancock, for starters), I never much cared for his own music, with the exception of *Kind of Blue.* Well... it looks like I have to say I like TWO of his albums, now.

A great album that makes you feel nostalgia

I love this album so much that I know all the lyrics to every song

There's cool, and then there's Miles Davis cool. 9/10

rly nice! surprised i liked it so much.

A jam so cool my infant rested soundly through the whole thing.

Oh yes, hard bop and bebop were always my favourite jazz genres (and later fusion too), but I completely understand the concept of "cool jazz" after listening to this record. Nine musicians, diligently playing together and never overtaking, it certainly is cool. Where improvisational jazz , bepop and big band come altogether in a perfect blend of smoothness. It's a perfect bridge between the complex arrangements of big band era and the more intimate small group formats that would dominate jazz in the following decades. Brilliant! 5/5

Delighted to see this this morning. Chill, inventive, perfect.

cool, indeed

Miles!

This rocks dude jazz is awesome. I decided I'm gonna become a jazz person as I approach my thirties hell yeah

"Birth of the Cool" is a great name for this album. You just *feel* cool listening to it. This is the kind of jazz I've always wanted to 'get into' but didn't really know where to start. I could listen to this endlessly. A perfect album and so much fun.

Ye, it's kinda perfect. This edition, only 32 minutes long, is a very ambitious project. Traying and succeeding at capturing the essence of cool and prestige. All performances are top notch, all track are beautifuly written and masterfully arranged by Gill Evans. Mellow and easy listening but deep and complex nonetheless. Highly recommend Got to be a

Loved it! Great vibe - the flow of the album was fantastic.

What can you say... amazing.

10/10 - you said it Miles Davis, this might’ve well invented coolness itself

Biblical.

It's a really good album, but not impressive enough to make me love it. It's not a 10 for me, but truly a 9. It's a very pleasant experience, with great instrumentations, Miles Davis is a great performer, and this album is the reflection of the work of talented people. I need more listens to really love it, but surly it's a great one. After all, it's Miles Davis, the album can't be anything but great.

WTF is a compilation doing on a collection of albums? We have this amazing collection of paintings, check out this photograph! Sure, some good curation makes a compilation work as a whole, but an album works by design. It's a different thing! It's especially annoying since Miles has multiple incredible albums. That said, this highlights Miles at his most approachable. Solid band, solid arrangements, innovative without the 'irritation' of some of his more ambitious material later on.

Everything about Miles is cool. This lp is a master work. Little did they know when this was released what was to come over the next decades

Fantastic album, it flew by and I wanted to hear it again the same day. It incredible, maybe even flawless. 5 stars, no question.

Bigg(er) Band Miles slows down hard bop tempos and finds success.

Miles' masterpiece. Jazz has never sounded this good. Excellent album.

Incredible. There's a reason he is considered a jazz master.

fabulous early Miles!

Þvílíka dúndurstemmningin sem fylgir þessari plötu. Þetta er algjörlega plata sem mun vera mín pabbatónlist. Eitthvað sem ég set á heima á meðan ég elda eða er bara einn að njóta kvöldsins og allir farnir að sofa. Ég komst í svo gott stuð að ég hækka úr 4.5 í 5.

Second jazz album of my collection.

I love this Miles. Definitely one of the more frenetic albums of jazz i can tolerate but its like the album suggests. This IS COOL. Get used to it...

Currently listening to it! Really liking it so far. Has a cool groove and tempo. Some interesting almost big band note runs at times.

Loved it so much. So cool, so smooth, I really can't get enough of it. If nothing else this list had shown me how much I enjoy jazz music.

Yassss, kween. Excited for some jazz. This jazz is busier than I'm used to listening to. I also have no basis to know or understand if/how this album is good or important. All I really know about jazz is if I like it or not. I actually know track 1, Move. I have no idea how but I somehow do. Track 3, Moon Dreams, feels like it's from a noir film, I kinda love it. Track 5, Budo, is great. It's busy but still familiar to other jazz I listen to. Track 7, Godchild is great, feels very classically jazz, so good to listen to whilst working. Oh man, track 8, Boplicity is soooo good.

Max fuckin' Roach on the drums, what a killer listen

Brilliance.

It's Miles, what more needs to be said?

Fire dawg

Hell yes. Looooved it

awesome stuff

stellar - the kind of music you think of when you hear the word “jazz.” Genre-defining. 5 stars

Both virtuous and relaxed. Another excellent reference.

Incredible jazz toots from the coolest cat around - makes my pecker swell up with joy

On one hand, jazz can feel very samey and not have a lot to separate a particular record from the crowd of others. On the other hand, records like this on relisten give you those invigorating moments where the rhythm takes you. Favorite Song: Deception

Delightful. What a musician.

Nice and cosy trumpet things - I like the sounds and the feeling of the music and it made me happy so it gets five.

Great Miles.

I only thing I can say is either you dig or you don’t. I for one dig it!

Absolute classic

Coooljaazzzz. Perfect intro to the sub genre. First generator album

A banger, a classic, an amazing album. Effortlessly cool.

I love Miles Davis

One of a favorite jazz albums for sure.

Great reading music

Frickin awesome, jazzy as hell.

So here's a little display of a very basic, simple physical law: "Miles Davis appears, I rate 5 stars." Very 'cool' music. I'd almost call it... cool jazz. First thing that came to mind, there couldn't possibly be any further implication here! And of course also: Mad respect to all the other composers and original performers of this masterpiece.

Absolute cool, fantastic playing and one of the easiest 5 stars so far.

Was going to pass on this, as not a fan of jazz. Glad I didn't this was amazing.

Classic Jazz. Great for a Friday afternoon at work.

Very good! Would buy on vinyl.

Classic 5 stars every day. Listen to this in the morning while you do daily mundane chores. It will put a pep in your step.

I am travelling for work tonight and it’s pouring with rain outside. Somehow the cool jazz hits just right. Miles Davis is the king of cool

Now this is the kind of jazz I can get behind. 32 minutes of quality, pleasant listening. When it was over I was ready for more.

Sonorous, jazzy, ear catching and cool

Call this a cat cafe because these cats were COOKING

Remind me a bit of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s album with Getz

After leaving Charlie Parker's quintet, Miles Davis started recording a different sort of jazz - cool jazz, Utilizing instrumentation that used unison to achieve a human voice-like effect, Davis began an experiment that expanded the range of jazz. Birth of The Cool is a compilation of tracks from two previous releases, all recorded during three sessions. Davis' incredible skills and remarkably extensive catalog have made him one of the most influential figures in jazz. Birth of The Cool was among the first of his recordings to show the world that he was not only a remarkably skilled player, but also a composer that would change the sound of modern jazz.

Truly magnificent .

Two Miles Davis in a week. I thought Kind of Blue was very accessible and this one seems even more so. I don't have the appreciation of jazz to see how this fits into the bigger picture of the genre but I loved this one. Rating: 4.7

Miles is the coolest

Very pleasant Jazz. Shorter tracks played by incredibly skilled musicians.

Good album. I'm not a jazz fan, but you can't deny the talent of Miles Davis. I might use it for background or music to unplug to.

Incredible!

Massively important. The only question is: When you're that cool, how do you know it? How did they know they were birthing The Cool?

Pure magic

This feels like the standard that all jazz album should be held up to. It has highs and lows. It's fast and slow. The recording is crisp and clear. There's a variety of instruments that's lead by an absolutely perfect horn performance. It's short enough that it left me wanting more. I really can't find a single thing wrong with this album.

Outstanding

Yes laaawd gimme more of that

truly a beedop boopow day! jazz is such an incredibly powerful and creative form of art. miles davis has truly left a remarkable mark on this art form

Love the blues

It’s Miles.

This is an all time great record.

you know that moment in the movie 'ratatouille' where Remy takes a bite of a piece of cheese and a strawberry and he sees these moving colors as the flavor reveals itself? ya this album is just that. one of the best of this early experiment.

Yes!!!! Sublime music!

With someone as renowned as Miles Davis you expect an album from him to be sensational. And with a taste for jazz like mine you’d expect me to love it. This, however, didn’t stand out to me so much, nothing really piqued my interest. That’s not to say it was a bad album but it just wasn’t quite what I was expecting or hoping it would be. I think I need to understand jazz better to really be able to appreciate the beauty of this album, but for now this album is just alright. Update: after more listens I definitely appreciate this album a lot more. Double update: I get it now. The mere thought of dying without having heard this album in my life is nightmarish to me.
